148: Your Body Is Always Listening: The Science of Self-Healing with Dr. Kim D’Eramo
51m 15s
Dr. Kim Duramo shares her transformative journey from being a board-certified physician diagnosed with a severe autoimmune illness during medical school to becoming a healer who integrates mind-body medicine. Initially, she was told she would need lifelong medication and could never run again. However, after a moment of curiosity and surrender, she stopped fighting her body and asked what message it was trying to convey. This shift from fear-driven achievement to receptive listening led to the immediate disappearance of her symptoms. She realized she had been chasing success to avoid failure, and letting go of that drive allowed healing. Kim developed the ABC process—Awareness, Breath, Choose—as a reproducible method to help others shift from unconscious reaction to conscious choice. Awareness is the most critical step, as it brings light to unconscious patterns and allows the body to relax out of fight-or-flight. Lauren Brown connects this to her own "Notice, Accept, Choose Again" framework, emphasizing that both approaches reflect a universal healing principle. The conversation underscores that true healing comes not from fighting symptoms but from listening to the body, dropping resistance, and making choices from a place of inner wholeness rather than fear or insecurity. This process enables individuals to navigate life's upheavals with greater peace and alignment.
I finally let my body be right. Like it's not my enemy. It's here to give me a really important message and that changed my life because what I received, the first thing I was aware of was, you've been chasing to avoid failure. You've been running from your fear of failure and using achievement as a way to modulate that. And that has to stop. You don't have to fight to achieve your here to be a great physician and have an amazing life of contribution that you want and you don't have to chase it. And that was the first time I ever let that turn off. And as soon as I did all my symptoms went away. Welcome to the Coherence Code podcast where we explore how the mind and body work together so you can move from stress and intercomplex to clarity, calm and alignment. My name is Lauren Brown. I'm a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine and a clinical therapist. And through my work, I've seen that healing happens when you remove what gets in the way and allow the body and the nervous system to do what they're just trying to do to heal. Welcome to the Coherence Code podcast. Today I'm speaking with someone who has fundamentally changed how we think about healing. Dr. Kim Duramo. Now Kim began as a board certified physician trained in the most conventional parts of medicine. And yet her own life took a radically different direction from developing a severe autoimmune illness during med school, by the way. And she was told she'd be on medication for the rest of her life and she's a runner and that she couldn't run ever again. And that her systems would only get worse. But something extraordinary happened. So instead of collapsing under the diagnosis, she turned inward. And what unfolded, he came to the foundation, I think of her life's work. Now today Kim teaches about the intersection of consciousness, emotion, physiology, and the body's innate ability to heal. Her ABC process, awareness, breath, choose has helped thousands shift out of chronic patterns that nothing else could even touch. And she integrates mind body medicine, nervous system regulation, I'm going to try and pronounce it. Honopono, pono, pono. Remember Joe Vitale, everybody I had him on episode. I can't remember one 20 something. We talked about that, and I want to pono, here you'll have to tell me how we pronounce it. But she brings this nervous system regulation, honopono, pono, movement. And what I would call the future of health care, a system rooted in presence rather than pathology. Now we're going to explore all that today, how emotions drive physical symptoms, what real healing requires, and how each of us can step out of our fear driven living and into a different internal state altogether. So Kim, I'm thrilled to have you here today. I'm thrilled to be here today. It's so good to connect with you and be able to contribute thus. Now you are our doctor of osteopathic medicine. You're the founder of the American Institute of Mind Body Medicine, author of the Mind Body Toolkit, and author of the book Be Your Own Healer, right? Yes. And we have a friend in common, Dr. P.D. Stapleton, who also did an episode on my podcast, episode 11. She's our EFT guru, right, the science of tapping. And that's how we got introduced. Well, I got to work with Pita in Australia a couple of years ago too. We both spoke in an event. So I've known her for years, but it was so great to meet her. And she's doing so much like pioneering in this field. So it's great to have people like laying down the foundation for understanding the research and the data. But for me, it's clinical. I work with people directly and see the results. I want to know you're-- and I think it listens to-- I want to start off with your personal experience. And then I want to get into ABC. And for our listeners, I have everything called NAAC. And I'm going to tell you, you're going to have some fun with this. We are so aligned on this. So let's first start-- because I touched upon it in our intro. So you're in med school. And I think even did maybe emergency medicine later on. But you get this diagnosis. So can you kind of walk us through this story? And who was Kim back then? And then who is Kim now based on this whole-- what I call opportunities to heal or wake up calls? I was always really intuitive. Energy sensitive could feel emotion, could read deeper into what was happening in a person. And you immerse yourself in something, whether it's a movie or a conversation. And your thoughts affect your physiology. And so when you're immersing in that, I guess that kind of person, your cells are really deeply listening. And so here we are in medical school studying pathology, and disease, and everything that can go wrong with the body, and what you focus on expands. And so my cells began manifesting all kinds of symptoms and all kinds of weird illnesses. And it didn't make a lot of sense. But I realized after the third round of some obscure illness that my symptoms matched the system we were studying in. So I had these heart palpitations while we're in cardiology. And sure enough, they found there's a murmur. There's an abnormal valve. We need to do an echo and look at like an ultrasound. And I was lying there like, wait, that looks just like the page in my book. And it didn't still didn't really hit me. Sounds so weird to say it now. But then it was, you know, I just developed this weird asthmatic condition while we were studying respiratory system. And then finally I developed like severe constipation. And I'm asking my mom, I did this. And I did that. And I've just things are moving. And she was always my go to, she's pretty intuitive too. And she goes, well, I don't know. Aren't there doctors at the school that you can talk to about this? And that's when it clicked. I was like, actually, yeah. And the guys who are here this week are the GI guys because we're studying the GI system. And so I went up and asked them and you know, he told me what to do. And I realized like, there's something we're going on. And I didn't know. It's unconscious. My cells were listening. Fast forward by second year. I had like a really obscure autoimmune disease. I had like chronic fatigue and severe severe joint pain, unrelenting back pain, knee pain, neck pain. And I went to every doctor because you know, there they are at the school or at the clinic or they'd send me to a specialist. And I finally ended up at this allergy doctor in the Harvard system. And he tested, you know, they inject you with everything. And I was inflamed to all of these allergens. And he's like, you have a severe rheumatoid like a late onset juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. And I was like, what? And it fit the bill as far as like the logistics. But when he went on and on about what I was going to have to do and all these medications, I'd have to take every day and I'd have to be in a controlled environment and don't use these cleaning solutions and don't have curtains and rugs. And I was like, wait a minute. This, I'm sorry, it was my 30 years, my 30 year by then. We were living in hospitals. I'm not controlling like the cleaning solution with like environments. So my head was spinning. I'm never going to run again. And then I all of a sudden sort of snapped out of it and realized, wait a minute, what if this is not true for me? I understood my body medicine, you know, in osteopathic, we learned that the mind and body are connected, that the body has the ability to heal itself and that our thoughts inform me our nervous system kind of governs everything. So I knew this and I studied this, but I hadn't really ever been given the how to as far as like what to do about it until this happened. And I realized, I've got to apply this. It's not enough to just understand it in a book. I'm in real time looking at what's going on. And that was the day after that diagnosis. I switched from asking, which one would be, what's wrong with me? What's wrong with me? What's wrong? I'm fiercely trying to fix it and get ahead of it and get on to the next thing. And that day started asking, okay, body, what are you trying to tell me? What, I started listening. So it's like, what's right about this? I'm not getting. What is my body asking me to receive? And I really, for the first time, listen from a space of like, what's right about this as opposed to a space of attack. I'm going to fight this. What do I have to do? And that shifted everything because literally that day, my body shifted and my body shifted because, well, obviously you're not in fight or flight anymore when you're receptively listening. I wouldn't have had that language for it though. I just knew I finally let my body be right. It's here to give me a really important message. And that changed my life because what I received, the first thing I was aware of was you've been chasing to avoid failure. You don't have to fight to achieve. You're here to be a great physician and have an amazing life of contribution that you want and you don't have to chase it. So when you're sharing your story and you have this experience, first of all, when you talked about, you know,
know, they told you, you know, this is the disease you have and you're going to go and meds, you can't exercise. There's a part of you that just said, no, right? Like I'm not going to, I'm not going to believe in this story is what I heard. Yeah. First it was like devastated and almost started sobbing and then, and then it was like a pause. And I just got curious. Like you were saying before, um, Hawkins, like the curiosity, you know, it was more of a like, wait, what if this is not true for me? And I knew inside like, it's not. So there's two things that happen because I want to slow it down because it happened like fast, but there are ways to do it. And I think the tools you offer and that allow people to get there. So here's what I see. Have here's my interpretation. First of all, I just, I'll quote something I heard. It's okay to believe in your diagnosis, but you don't have to believe in your prognosis. Right? You know, what I saw there, because I had that experience myself where I chased things, you know, CPA first, now doctor trying to spend all the things I'm never celebrating any achievements. Next one, next one. And I became clear, I got to know other people by knowing myself that I am so damn insecure. Like I am so insecure, which is why I'm so apparently successful on the outside, because I'm trying to feel something that isn't, that I can't feel from the outside. It sounds like you have, and that's that drive you were sharing, right? The drive. And what I heard you say is you can still have these achievements on the outside, but what's the beingness behind you going for these achievements rather than trying to fill that insecurity, you're already whole and okay, and you can have both at the same time. In your experience, what I saw there or what I'm seeing is you said you're devastated. And I say, sometimes light will bring you to your knees. And it forces you to surrender, meaning there's the resistance drops because you stop fighting with it. First, you didn't, and then you just had this shift. And to me, it's all about resistance. Chinese medicine calls a cheese stagnation. And when your resistance dropped, all of a sudden flow and receptivity happened, flow happens again. And your symptoms went away because in Chinese medicine, when she stagnates, so emotions stuck energy in your body. So we call cheese stagnation. So that's the trauma of the stuck energy. It doesn't feel good. It causes pain, long-term disease. And when you the cheese returns in the flows, healing becomes back and pain goes away. So in your, through your process, that's what I saw happen instantly for you. But I want to unpack it and tell people, how do you do this purposely? Because you're either going to do it being brought to your knees by life. God help me, extra render. Before you can purposely learn to let go, learn to surrender, learn to accept what it is, and bring the resistance down purposely. Did I see you when I just described what happened to you? Yes, very, very precisely. And that's when I came up with the instant elevation process, it was after so many people would say, how did you do that? How did you do that? And what is the process? And I realized it can be segmented like in a sequential way and taught. It can be reproduced and so super easy, awareness, breathing, choice. And so the first part is the most important where I became aware of my inner state instead of trying to run away from it. Because most of the things we feel are not conscious. Like you would, I don't know, the inadequacy or fear or what might have come up for me then. Like a sense of urgency. I wasn't aware of that. I was just running on it. Like fast, fast doing this, doing that, maybe pushing, but that created the physiologic state that suppressed my immune system and created the illness. So if I became aware, that's what I did that day. Like I became aware of this drive and this fear and this urgency. And I was in a pause with it instead of a reaction to it. All right. So first part is awareness. And we're going to talk about the ABCs. And I'm going to keep connecting. Because my listeners heard this. I called notice except choose again, just so you know, the last C choose. So we have some stuff to talk about here. But I want to hear your whole process. And then I want to link it. And for my listeners, why I got excited about Kim, why I want to invite her. And so Kim, here's part of the story. I haven't been able to get a chance to share off line is I've studied, you know, Jody Spenser, Bruce Limpton, Lynn McTagrid. You know, I train, hypnosis. I do the training for myself. I want to heal. I want to share with my community. So a lot of reading workshop training. I'm kinesthetic learner. One day out of nowhere, you know, you, when you get a download, you don't know it. And the next thing you know, it's just instant, right? All the sudden I realize everybody's doing the same thing. Some call it 10 steps, four steps, two steps. But everybody's doing notice except choose again. And when I read your material, I was like, there's, so I can lay notice except choose again over EFT by the way, too. So we can unpack that. I don't know if you listen to my episode with Joe Vitale. I put NAC over his whole opponent, he loved it. Like, because it was just one day, I just realized this is how healing happens. And it's a process. And then any team can fit into it. Any tool, EFT, psych, K, EMDR, turtle part systems, it all fits in. Yeah. It's spot on. It's exactly the same overlay. And it's because we're all organically listening to the source consciousness or the life force or whatever. And then you're kind of decoding what is the process of allowing it to flourish through the body. Well, it's universal. We're all going to come up with the same thing, but you have a different name or different way of expressing it. So it's good. There's so many people are saying, because you know, we mentioned Eckhart Toli before when we came on. Eckhart Toli is like, it's very oso taric. And you're like, what is the book about? I have no idea. So if they have ends when you read it. And then other people who really hear that and need like a Lauren Brown, and they can hear it from you. And so it's really about how it comes through and we're all different. And this is why it's so important, everybody. And the boot is my think they say light transforms darkness. Darkness are those uncomfortable feelings. Darkness are those unconscious programs that don't serve you. And light is awareness. And when you bring light to the darkness, it transforms. That's how powerful awareness is. So your first step is awareness. Can you talk a little bit more about awareness? See, if you just bring your presence to the body from like a curious question like, hey, body, how are we doing? A lot of times our awareness is, is there something wrong? What's wrong? I got to do this. I got to do that. Maybe I have cancer. And that does the opposite effects. And it actually contracts the body. So we get less awareness. It's resistance. Yeah, it creates resistance. But if we have that openness and receptivity, it's just a check-in. And you know, people can do it as like a body scan and you're kind of just sensing through the whole body. I have people connect with the heart because you're activating heart coherence and just begin to connect that way. And what I'm aware of could be, wow, there's a lot of fear here or, ooh, I'm speaking so fast. And then we just slow it down a little and get a little more in my coherence. But awareness does the whole thing. And it's the most important part of the like the three step because, you know, we talk about conscious choice. You can't make a conscious choice when you're in fight or flight and you're in your fear. And that's what I was trying to do. I'm going to exercise. I'm going to eat. I'm going to do a meditation. But it was all out of a fear of the inadequacy or attempt to escape or avoid failure. You're going to create more fear. So let's unpack this. This is probably, like you said, awareness is the key step and this is what's so powerful what you're saying. And it reminds me of Victor Frankl's quote that I modified where he says, in every situation, you either unconsciously, habitually react or you can consciously choose to respond, right? It's kind of the idea. And Victor Frankl, he wrote the man search, remaining the psychiatrist holocaust survivor. It's so weird. So weird you're saying because I've never read that book in this morning. I started reading it on audio, like a half an hour because there have been so much of a depth of upheaval in my life right now. When you were telling, when you were talking about the story of when this happened way back, I started kind of tearing up realizing, oh, I'm in another of that moment, like to a new evolution of my life. And it's been so profoundly destabilizing that it's just brought up so much of the unknown and uncertainty. And I mean, that's a moment that's right for change. So it's great. But I started reading that book this morning. First. Well, perfect. And this is for all of us because I mean, how many of us are in upheaval right now? And then you talk of it and I talked with the external world as a reflection of our inner world. And through the Buddhist Eckerts who suffering comes awakening, there's a collective awakening. And I would share it. And we're going to get into what you talked about with the awareness. And I want to bring in Victor Frankl's work. But when you have this collective awakening that I think is happening and we're seen on an individual level and on a collective, you can either co-create with it or co-participate with tools like ABC or not and you'll blow fuses, right? So and the Buddha say again, pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional. So that doesn't mean that when you're having these wakeups, like you're in a destabilized, it doesn't mean it's not uncomfortable. It is uncomfortable. But Eckert says you can be at peace in an unhappy situation. [BLANK_AUDIO]
So you use these tools to metabolize to sit in it so they move through you, right? Which is what we're going to talk more about. But I want to share Victor Frankel's stuff with what you're doing here. So because you talked about your chasing or doing things, but you're coming from fear and lack. And so when I took his quote, what kind of resonator hit home for me is that it's not the action that matters. It's the beingness behind the action. And you're either out of if you come from fear and lack. So if you're cloned and your clones are doing the exact same thing, but one is coming from fear and lack and one's coming from hole and complete. Even though the actions are identical in their clones because the beingness behind the actions different, they get different results. So fear and lack gets more fear and lack. Hole and complete gets more hole and complete. So right action must follow right thinking. But first you got to get into that right thinking or get into presence or beingness. And that's what I think you were sharing right now when you said the awareness, get into awareness, drops the resistance so you can find that presence. So you flow and receptivity comes through you again. You tap into the higher self and then usually inspired action comes through you and you take that action. Yeah. And that's exactly right on. And then after awareness, we go to be so be for me as breathe. And it's exactly what you're saying about except because you're allowing the breath to come through whatever may feel resistant or difficult or painful and you're embracing the emotions that are there. You're allowing it's a nervous system shift too. So from the fight or flight state, we're breathing mostly into the upper and long fields. And when we shift our breath to a belly breath, which it can take a few minutes or even days of just kind of mindful practice to let the body shift. If you've been there for years and you haven't done this, but then it does become something that your body's already doing all the time and it's just a general reminder. So the belly is expanding out with the inhale. It's sinking back in with the exhale. And if I have people just like tighten out their shoulders and make fists and then inhale. And then if you exhale and you relax, you're automatically coming more into belly breath. So out of the sympathetic into the parasympathetic and your nervous system switches. And so that like physiologically alone will allow more of the dissolution digestion of the stock energy and second motion and resistance and blah, blah, blah. But when you add to it what you're talking about with acceptance, I will breathe in this moment that's uncomfortable. I will breathe and allow the grief. So you can't soften your body and stay in resistance like to the same degree. Can't soften your body and stay not. You're going to begin feeling things you didn't feel, but you're going in the right direction. And most people think, I don't want to feel something. I want to feel this. It must be wrong. And so they just live clamped down and closed. But real healing can't happen in that state. Sometimes you got to let it come up to come out. So when you soften the body, you do a more full breath. Your body is already beginning to heal and shift and digest everything ready to go. And it also immediately changes your brain state from where I was resistant. What's wrong with me is wrong with me, but not receptive. So I could never really, you get the answer. What's wrong with you? Oh, here's another problem and another problem. But I didn't ever get what would solve this or what's right about this or what one thing could allow an opening. So when you do allow this shift and step B, your brain becomes receptive to solutions. Do you find that because the way you're saying this, the question, like what's wrong with me versus is there a message here or how is this happening for me? There's a frequency between with the question. And so do you think based on the question you have is kind of the information you're going to receive? Yes. If the receptivity is there because you know people do affirmations all the time and not receptive. Oh, I'm open to everything and what's the solution here? And I probably did that too, right? Like I'm open to solutions. But if you haven't done a and you haven't shifted your nervous system, you're not really receptive. So yeah, it automatically allows that receptivity. And so then if you're asking the question, which is like for C is my the conscious choice. So you either like ask a better question or you kind of focus on your intention or you begin to look at what is my, what's my real purpose and vision? Yeah, I want to fix my body, but I just want to be free and be at peace. So that's kind of that next step is like, what is it I am looking for? And for me, it shifted to what's right about this. I'm not getting and it shifted to what could, how could I be in a different space so my body could heal? So I want to unpack your A B a bit and your C with you. So because you talked about your mind changes. So when you're in, when you're fighting with reality, um, in Byron K, another great writer says, you know, when you fight with reality, you suffer. We call that she calls that stress and conscious work. I call that resistance. And he's medicine calls it cheese technician. It does not feel good. And when you fight with reality, you go into a sympathetic state because your body goes into survival and you talked about the gut, right? Then the breathing goes shallow. So sympathetic, your energy is mobilized for survival. Therefore it's not around for healing, creativity, reproduction. And when you can sit with this through your awareness, breath and awareness, the resistance drops. You go from sympathetic to parasympathetic. So by the way, your brain waves go from high beta, anxiety, worry to low beta or even alpha, right? Which is alpha is that present moment. And all of a sudden, those resources become available now for healing, creativity and reproduction. So that's how I understand, you know, now we have research, your physicians, psychonuromanology. We know, could you say the thoughts affect your cells, affect your physiology? We now know that your thoughts and feelings impact your hormonal system, your immune system, your endocrine system. We know that now. So you have awareness, breathe and shoes. Can I align this with notice, accept shoes again? And you jump in now for me and tell me like bringing your stuff. So I say notice, notice everything is neutral. And then we give it meaning, we're meaning makers. And the meaning we give it is through the lens of our subconscious programming, things that we brought in intergenerational, or got imprinted on us when we were children. We didn't choose it. We don't blame, there's no benefit to blame others. But that's the nervous system we got. That's the programs of beliefs we got. So we perceive the world through our lenses. You know, I've heard a conscious teacher say everything, think of reality as white snow. And you get red glasses, I got blue glasses, somebody else has orange green. We all see the white snow, but we all have a different experience of perception because of our lens. And the work that we're doing is changing the lens. And every time we change the lens, we have a new experience of that white snow. And maybe if you become a fully awakened and alive in this world, the glasses are off and you just see white snow. Right. Maybe you get there. So notice everything. Or maybe you take them off for a few minutes a day or an hour. Or maybe sometimes you have a half a day. Yeah. So that's the notice part. Then the A is the acceptance where many tools, and I love the FT for this. Acceptance doesn't mean you're resigned to it. It doesn't mean you like it. It just means you're not going to fight with what is in this, in your being authentic. In this moment, I feel afraid. In this moment, I feel stupid. In this moment, I don't feel pretty enough. I don't feel enough. You're just accepting that because that's what it seems countertuitive, but that takes the resistance out of it. And that Kertolli says, when you're present, when you're conscious or after you do A, B, or after you do N, A, as I call it, the choose again is he says you can remove yourself from the situation consciously or you can change or improve the situation consciously. And if you cannot remove yourself, change, improve the situation, you can continue to accept what is and be at peace in an unhappy situation in that moment. That's the whole thing. Are we not, we tuned into it, A, like we got the same antenna going A with, with that, are we? Yes, it's true. It's, there's one truth and some different ways of we've all interacted with it and deciphered it. And, you know, in the B, your own healer book, I have a chapter that was about like how we block it and neutrality blocks. We have this, I am and I am and this expansive self. And then like what blocks that? And so one of the things is like, I just want to stay here. I don't want to let this go. And then boom, now you're in attachment. But one of the things that you just spoke to is like, thinking I'm the one who does it. I'm digesting the app all. Like your body heals itself. And so it's not really so much, I'm healing myself. I'm activating self-healing. It's, I'm releasing the resistance that was inhibiting my natural state as well being in health. And the body is always doing it. But if I'm blocking it, it's not going to do it so well. So if all I'm doing is releasing the resistance, it gets activated. It is active. It's happening. Your body is already healing. And so it's way less about the do than it is about the B. Yes. What we're doing, our ABC or NAC is a colleague, our colleague psychotherapist who's realized Ellie Rack. I call it, and I got this from Amique, Wesson.
because he says do be do be do right. So that's what I be of get present and then right action falls right thinking. So get into being this and then do being this and do. That's what we're doing. So I said to Ellie, I said when I read at Kurtz book, I said he talked about the power of now and I said I needed a how to now. So this process is for those left brainers that need a little doing to get into being before they do different doing and he said it's not a doing and I go what are you talking what he goes what you are you it looks like doing but what your process is an undoing we're unwinding aren't we it's an undoing right the A.V. Is an undoing we're getting rid of the noise the lights already there's nothing to add we're just getting rid of the noise and we talked off camera about the women I see for Perry men of pause or fertility sometimes their labs are perfect like it makes no sense but their cycles are not perfect but the blood work is perfect. So the hypothalamus or two to very axis everything's there but the noise is the issue so think of this everybody there's a you've got the radio playing the music you can hear it but there's all this static so you can kind of hear it but you can't hear it or enjoy it so you have the hormones signaling but there's so much inflammation in the body there's so much resistance in the body that although from the lab work it looks like yeah the songs playing but the cells can't hear it and so what we're doing here is removing the noise removing the static and now you hear it clearly well and even for the people where the labs are off when we do the consciousness work and allow a shift it can be a night the body to begin to create the hormones in the right amounts in the right cycles etc and be what I've seen is that person automatically like a synchronicity serendipitous thing finds the exact needle in a haystack medicine or homeopathic or practitioner or whatever like so it's universal the synchronicity just in the synchronicity happens right all of a sudden the right person the right thing shows up yeah it's wild because I've had people where we've done a session and we've shifted their consciousness in this one woman had years of hyperthyroid a lot of the people that I'm working with we're correcting hypothyroid she hyper and was in the hospital in and out of hospital for crisis and it was devastating and the day after we did the work to shift her she like magically found the right homeopathic that changed the whole game in her system and she's like it was a needle in a haystack she'd been working with a homeopath before she tried this she tried that but because she wasn't in the alignment for that result it just didn't work so once you shift all of these things align and then you just know like yep I'm going to work with this one person or I'm going to take that thing and it can be a pharmaceutical it could be surgical it could be food like don't be enjudgment about the world or it could be a treatment about the way universal source energy is going to guide you for your healing path it's a buffet all of it is under God all of it is on you know everything can be a medicine or a poison and how it comes to you sometimes is like that's how you know it's come from the universe because it's like I would never expected this and and actually should not come this way but here it is right I have another thing I want to ask you because you're a clinician and so a little as the time of recording spin over a year in my practice so I use needles and low level eight I use needles and low-level laser therapy in my clinic, and I have a nice, vibrant, acoustic, sound table, so I'm working at getting people to parasimphathetic, 'cause when they're parasimphathetic, they heal, and then majority of my practice is doing conscious work with people. I think that I do that they don't know I'm doing, but because you mentioned it in your work, is while I'm working with them, I use my version of homepage or plono in them, right? And I want to see what you're doing with it. I want you to explain what it is, and what I mean by that is when I'm working with them, whatever's coming up for me while I'm working with them is when I'm home on plono. I'm not emitting anything to the patient. It's just like all of a sudden, if patients struggling and a thought comes up, oh, they're not gonna get well, and I feel frustrated or I feel imposter syndrome, while they're sitting over the needles and laser and doing the work, I'm like, oh, look what came out with me, and then I just start to work it. And I'm always amazed how before our 50 minute hour, it ends at 45 minutes, it's like, this is never going away, right? Like they're out. And then in the last five minutes, they just poof, right? The shift they have. And they're sitting there processing, but I'm doing stuff too, and I'm using a whole plono. I'm curious, 'cause you talked about it, how do you use it, and can maybe explain to the audience a bit, 'cause I don't think I can give, except for Joe's interview, I don't know if I can give a good explanation, and I'd love you. - I was stoked about this. So when I learned this, I was working in the ER, I read Joe's book that he wrote with Dr. Hulen, and it immediately was like, this is like a holy grail. This is something very potent. I wanna learn everything I can, and I win online, and 'cause he kept talking about a workshop that they do, and sure enough, there was a workshop with Hulen, and I'm thinking, I'm gonna fly here, I'm gonna fly there, I have this one weekend off from the ER, it was like 12 minutes away from my house, and it was the following weekend, it was the same weekend I had off, and I'm like, oh my gosh, so I worked with Hulen, did this workshop and just absorbed everything I could, and I immediately, even just from reading the book, I started running that four-part mantra, super basic, we'll share it in a moment. I just constantly had that running the background, like records playing in my system all the time. I would wake up in the morning to, I love you, I love you, I love you, I still to this day, it's still there. - I wake up at night, sometimes saying, I'm sorry, please forgive me, I love you, thank you. Like I'll wake up in a dream. - Yeah, yeah. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Yeah, so I love you, please forgive me, I love you, I'm sorry, please forgive me, thank you, whatever order you like, or you could just keep saying, thank you, or keep saying, I love you, but here's what happened. I was practicing osteopathy medicine, I had a practice at the time, and I was working with people with pain, but then it was like more mind-body stuff that would come, and I realized while I'm on the body, 'cause you get your hands on the body, and you're perceiving what's going on, and that if I was how upon a ponoing, or just using the mantra as I noticed, whatever arose in me, as I was treating and observing the patient, magical things would happen, like massive acceleration of the feeling process. And I was like, whoa, and I talked to all my osteopathic colleagues about it, 'cause I went to this workshop up in Maine, where we had gone to medical school, and I was like, you guys, this is amazing, and blah, blah, blah, and here's what it's like, and then I shared what I'm gonna share with you about how it's really doing, and they just looked at me like I had six heads, and these were people who like, this was their full-time thing, I was doing it part-time, I know it was in the ER, and these were some of the most people I respected the most, and I was like, you guys don't get this, you guys don't get this, and I thought, well, I'm in the wrong room here, like this is massive. So what I'm seeing is we are affecting each other all the time, and if you've ever done remote work, like I work with people remotely now, and we do stuff on Zoom, but I'll like work on their system remotely outside of the session, or have a hit send a text, and they're like, oh my God, how did you know? This was exactly what I needed to hear, and I was just about to walk into divorce court to get custody of my children back. Like some weird synchronicities happen because we are actually connected. So when I am observing what's happening in me, either that signal's going through, which are like radio signals all around us, fear, fear, you're not enough, you're about to die, it's not okay. And that's getting on board, programming and instructing my physiology, or I can choose what reigns here, and I can put the messaging. I love you, I'm sorry, please forgive me. Thank you, and then there is a deeper level to what that is transmuting that I'll touch on, but all I did really in the beginning was, I would just use that you're clearing. He would say, clean, clean, clean, and people would ask me, please. - Yeah, so he cleaned, clean, clean, clean. - Leblah, bleblah, and he'd be like, clean, clean, clean. - Sure, sure. - Was like, is he not gonna teach? Is he not gonna answer the questions? But then you get it, after a while you're like, oh, it's basically like telling the rational mind, like, shut up, that's not what we're doing, get here now, over and over, 'cause when you do it, there are no questions. You're insanity, you're in clarity. And so I would do that on my system. Now, we are electromagnetic. My electromagnetic night field is influencing and impacting my patients electromagnetic field, very powerfully, not subtly. And so if I'm in my, I love you, I'm sorry, please forgive me, thank you. That is the most prominent frequency in my system. That's gonna override any blocks that they have to the treatment, any interference, any whatever fill in the blank to let them receive the most. - I love it. And I'll share Jovitali's episode, where we really unpack this, is 123 for those that are listening. And, 'cause you know, people go, what do you mean, I'm sorry, what do you mean? I forgive you, it's not so simple that. And then what I wanna touch on with your work is the I love you part, 'cause we had a really good conversation Jo and I on this, 'cause the loving you, some people think about it as like Hollywood.
love, you know, like romantic love. And when we do awareness or acceptance, that's a form of love. Love is accepting is a form of self-love. Loving doesn't mean you like it because people go, "Well, I don't love this. I don't love my cancer," right? And so I use the word to me is accept it, right? Because you have a diagnosis of cancer. You don't have to believe in the prognosis, but you have a diagnosis of it. Can you accept that? And can you bring the resistance down? That to me is part of that I love you. And then on the esoteric side is you're, you know how we talked about your tune into your higher self. Everybody I've had on the late Bill Bankston. I've had him on a couple of times. He's done a lot of work studying cancer and rats like on purpose and doing energy healing and their healing. When we, when I interviewed him and I distill it down like so and what did this and what what what he says it comes down to love. Here's a scientist, right? Almost everybody, they've used this term love and love to me is another term probably for consciousness. And from the rational line where I'm at is just keep practicing acceptance, surrender acceptance because that gets you into this in that loving state. I have found. Yeah. And bringing the breath to the spaces of anger, pain, fear, fill in the blank, whatever I'm resisting is the form of love. And that's what brings the healing. And so the second thing I was going to mention with I love you. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you is an inner process of transmutation. So I love you is I allow you to be here exactly as you are to myself to my system without requiring you to change. I love you exactly as you are. So that's like so potent for healing. I'm sorry is to the part of me that experienced the suffering as real that I really am lacking and I really am not enough and it really isn't safe and I really do have to struggle. Is it true with a capital T? No. But did I experience it as if it was? Yes. So can I just acknowledge that because when I was working in my osteopathic clinic, like so many people, my fibromyalgia and my chronic fatigue, the biggest thing that would allow that to unwind was validating what they have been through. Like this, you really have been a trooper and this really has been excruciating and I'm so sorry you experienced this in your reality. And then when they would just receive that, something would let go and now they were receptive. If I just tried to give them whatever the healing was and that didn't happen first, nothing. So I love you. I'm sorry. That part, when you say I'm sorry to that part, you're not saying you agree with it. You're saying I see you. There's a part, there's that part that is feeling fear is suffering and you're acknowledging and that Gordon Newfell, the attachment therapist, everybody wants to be seen and heard equals love. And so when you come alongside and bring awareness to it, and as you said, I'm sorry, you're feeling this way or Joe and I talked about, I'm sorry, I went unconscious because you know, I believe I'm sorry. There's a notice part. I'm sorry. I believed in the story and I'm suffering, right? To myself, that is a form of seeing that part of you. And when that part feels seen, it feels loved. Yes. And that's that. Please forgive me is when it feels love, it can let go of the illusion of separation, lack, and fear. It can't do that until it's seen in the validity of like that because we are love and that person suffering holding on to it is actually an expression of like how much I care, how willing I am to do whatever it takes. You know, we got to validate that. And then please forgive me is whenever you're ready, you can let this go. So now that they've received whatever it was, they really needed to be seen, the please forgive me is a really effortless thing. And then thank you. It's just that exclamation point at the end of validating that it is done gratitude. Yeah. Thank you. gratitude brings you into receptive mode. As we wrap up, a couple of rapid fire kind of a question. So do you do you subscribe to the idea that like chronic or stuck illness is almost always emotional or belief roots? Yes. Relief group based. I do. And that's because in my experience, it resolves when we do this work. And I wouldn't say just belief, but there's a lot of things in the energy field, like memories, conclusions, assumptions, lineage, you know, all kinds of things, but it's energetic. And when we resolve the energy, the illness, I mean 100% will resolve the chronic, you know, chronic things that aren't getting better doesn't mean we don't get to have an exit strategy. And there's a transition and death of the body and like doesn't mean that illness is wrong, but these like chronic ill states people are living in for like sometimes years. I have seen resolve sometimes very quickly when we resolve the underlying energy. And clinically have you found, because again, I find there's so much similarities here. So I'm like, Hey, have you found this? Clinically, and it's changed a bit somewhere around age 40 to people I see when they're hit around 40 plus or minus a few years. Stuff that used to work the more physical stop working. And I used to, I, I, I interpreted as, Oh, it's a wake up call like that there's a part of them saying, we've held this in your system since childhood. And now you're 40, you're grown up, and we can't go into old age using all our resources to keep this compartmentalized to deny and suppress it. So it's going to show up and you got to deal with your shit. So part one is, did, can I always found it somewhere around 40 since COVID, it feels like there's a collective awakening. So now it doesn't matter how old you hurt everybody's in their shit and that everybody's having to do inner work. That's my, myself included. I'm wondering, are you experiencing that as well? There's a lot of awakening. And it's not related as much to age, but as the acceleration in the, I guess you could call it atmosphere, you know, we're getting hit with solar flares. And there's an acceleration in the frequency we're in. So like 50 years ago, it's like, yeah, you beat your kids, show them whose boss, like, oh, that's no big deal. Now it's, we're so aware of truth. We're all worthy of love. And here's what that looks like. And if we're still holding suppressed energy, whether it's a belief, I'm not worthy, or it's just an emotion of anger or a lineage pattern of like not having money, these are dissolving. And they, because we're accelerating so quickly, it's kind of like a scuba diver coming up really quickly. And then the nitrogen bubbles aren't dissolved out and they get the bends. And there's pressure. People are feeling the pressure of carrying those lower frequency energies into a higher dimensional consciousness. So you're going to be like, and I don't know what's happening. Just like someone that gets the bends, it could be screaming in pain. And what you've got to do is actually what do you do? You dive them. You descend them to the frequency and consciousness where that energy can dissolve. So you go into the shame where you go into the fear. No, no, that could be the right way. Surely, I've got to escape this. No, you brought a letter. Transmute. See, we actually go into the, doesn't mean you got to relive the trauma, but to embrace and allow that, um, stuck suppressed energy to come up and dissolve. It has to have resolution. It's stuck. That's the whole idea of stuck. It was, you're meant to have a human experience. It should have lasted minutes hours, not gears. And now life bumps up against it or now wakening. And you can try to push it, suppress it, deny it, project it out. We see that. All the most of the protesting is a projection with lots of blame, right? So we can try to do that. But I don't think that's going to work in whatever's happening now. And I believe, I don't know, but I believe it's going to happen. So you can either go kicking or screaming or you can use tools like A, B, C, to help you. I like your, um, your diving analogy. So we're going to descend into it. And we're going to notice it. We're going to bring awareness and breathe into it. We're going to bite the apple and chew. And then we're just going to trust the process and see what happens. And so you have to be willing to do the work, learn some tools. Um, and again, let's, let's tie, let's wrap up then with you, Kim. How do they go and connect with you? How can people work with you? Where are your books? Where are your online programs? Any closing remarks? Because people like, yeah, like me, I want peace over craziness. And you have a process to help people find that peace that's inside of them. That is them. The site is drkim d.com. And if you go to drkim d.com/elevate, you'll have a download for the instant elevation. It will take you through the process. And you can listen to that even just a few times. Maybe when you get up in the morning and then you do it during the day on your own, even if it's just three seconds, it's a super easy process. It will begin to shift your physiology and it will begin to access you more and more to, you know, what you're talking about Lauren, where they begin to just be in that piece and that piece is what dissolves the, whatever if it's your body or symptoms or your money or your, you know, family member, like you're impacting all of it. So drkim d.com and the my books are on Amazon as well, but drkim d.com foreign slash elevate is for the instant elevation audio download. We're going to put that in the show notes too. So guys,
Check out the show notes if you're looking for that. Kim's got a YouTube channel, like in her mind body TV, really good material there. And so if you're looking to learn more, do check out her website, check out her YouTube channel. Lots of incredible stuff that she's teaching and offering. And again, she's a doctor of osteopathic medicine, right? Is that what they call, DO? That's what it stands for. - That's right, a DO, yes sir. - And she's lived it. She's had the diagnosis and the prognosis, and she was able to shift that. And now she's taking that out to her community and teaching us how to do that for ourselves as well. And we thank you for that. - Thank you so much, I'm so glad we did this. - Thank you for spending this time with us on the Coherence Code podcast. I'm Dr. Lauren Brown, and I will see you next week for another conversation on Coherence and Healing. Podcast Summary
Key Points:
Dr. Kim Duramo, a physician, developed severe autoimmune symptoms during medical school, which she realized were linked to her unconscious focus on pathology and fear of failure.
She shifted from asking "what's wrong with me?" to "what is my body trying to tell me?" which led to symptom relief by listening to her body instead of fighting it.
Her ABC process (Awareness, Breath, Choose) teaches how to consciously move from reactive fear to receptive presence, with awareness being the crucial first step.
The discussion highlights that healing involves dropping resistance, allowing flow, and making choices from a state of wholeness rather than insecurity or avoidance of failure.
Lauren Brown notes that her own "Notice, Accept, Choose Again" framework aligns with Kim's ABC process, both being universal patterns underlying various healing modalities.
Summary:
FAQs
The ABC process stands for Awareness, Breath, Choose. It is a three-step method for shifting out of chronic patterns by becoming aware of your inner state, using breath to pause, and making a conscious choice rather than reacting from fear.
Her symptoms went away when she stopped fighting her body and instead listened to it with curiosity. She shifted from asking 'what's wrong with me' to 'what is my body trying to tell me,' which moved her out of fight-or-flight and allowed healing.
Awareness is the most important step because it brings light to unconscious programs and stuck emotions. By being present with the body without judgment, you can transform resistance and create the conditions for healing.
Emotions drive physical symptoms by creating stuck energy in the body, which causes pain and disease. When you become aware of and release these emotions, the energy flows again and symptoms often resolve.
Reacting is an unconscious, habitual response driven by fear, while responding is a conscious choice made after becoming aware of your inner state. The ABC process helps you shift from reaction to response.
Yes, the podcast suggests that the ABC process (or similar frameworks like Notice Accept Choose) can be overlaid on tools like EFT, EMDR, or hypnosis, as it represents a universal principle of healing.
