Your Articulation is Connected to Your Compensation

In this podcast, Dr. Grace Lee argues that communication is the superpower that distinguishes high achievers in leadership. She observes that many individuals rise to strategic positions not because of superior education, technical skills, or work performance, but because they articulate ideas effectively. Communication, she explains, is a contemplative power because words enable clear thinking and self-discovery. It is a creative superpower, as language transforms visions—like an architect’s design—into reality. It is also a competitive superpower, helping professionals position themselves, secure promotions, resources, and opportunities. Finally, communication is a selling power, but Dr. Lee redefines selling as a service: when you persuade others of your ideas, you help them see value and improve their circumstances. She emphasizes that articulation is directly tied to compensation—not just money, but also legacy and impact. To develop these skills, she advocates moving beyond mechanical speaking to high-level strategic communication that builds trust, visibility, and influence. Her message is clear: mastering communication is essential for anyone aiming to step into higher leadership and make a meaningful contribution.

Have you ever had the experience where you saw a colleague in your organization was promoted, but they weren't necessarily more educated. They weren't necessarily better at what they do, and they weren't necessarily technically powerful, or had really good work performance on implementing things, not necessarily, but you're going to notice that time and time again, these individuals have rose and up into strategic leadership, simply because they talk really well. I'm Dr. Grace Lee, and you're listening to the Career Revisionist podcast for executives, team leaders, people and managers, and ambitious professionals from all backgrounds. It's for those among us who can't stay stagnant and admire anyone who demonstrates exponential growth. We challenge ourselves to step out of our comfort zone and into higher levels of leadership, and we are determined to rise confidently in our industry so that we can make our greatest contribution using our knowledge and expertise. We have worked hard to become great at what we do, but only so we can achieve the goals that give our lives meaning and purpose. And while we persevere through a college education to get us here with our technical skills, we understand that to get to the next level where we desire to be, it requires a different kind of skills. We're not comfortable with failure because we experience satisfaction when we are advancing. And while some of us work well under pressure, all of us perform the best when we are part of a winning team. And instead of just hoping to achieve what's important to us, we choose to become a more optimized version of ourselves to make it happen. We're not just A players. We are A plus players, and we are the source of consistent output that makes positive advancements in the world around us. Your articulation is connected to your compensation. It always amazes me how in school they teach you how to read and write, but they don't emphasize. They don't teach you the importance of communication. Communication has the ability to move people, has the ability to create impact and influence as well. If you think about it, who are all the people that had an impact in your life? Well, if you really reflect on those individuals, they had a message. And that message moved you. That message inspired you. That message influenced you to take a certain action that benefited you as well. So this is where it's important that when it comes to communication, discover your willingness and your ability to develop your communications, develop and deploy great messages in your communication. And that is your compensation. And when I say compensation, I don't just mean money. I don't just mean what you're paid through your salary or through speaking. That's not the only compensation. Your compensation is also the reward in return. It's the legacy you are building. It's the impact you're having on other people. Right now, this whole communication is all based on language and languages. How we connect languages, how we move people languages, how we share what we really know. And it's your knowledge that has the ability to help people. You could never have imagined you could help have helped people before. Right. So develop and deploy your communication. And in this video, what I'm going to share with you are in the four most important principles on how to develop your willingness and your ability to communicate. Principle number one, communication is a contemplative power. Words are thinking. It's impossible to think about a thing without words. Now, at most, if you don't have words for it, you kind of have a feeling of what you were thinking and you kind of have sort of a feeling of vague intuition and an understanding of what you're thinking, but you don't really have a concrete understanding. And it's really difficult to convey that to someone else and to get feedback on it and to connect with someone else on it as well and to get buying on it as well. If there are no words, have you ever had this experience where you felt a certain thing or maybe you felt a certain way or maybe you had a certain perspective, but it was kind of vague to you. You didn't really have the words to it. And then someone else comes along and they put the words to how you have been feeling all along. You've had that experience. How does I make you feel in that moment? Don't you feel seen and heard in that moment? Does it feel like, oh my gosh, now I finally understand why I thought that. Now I finally understand what I've been thinking. It feels wonderful. It feels like a self discovery. It feels like an authentic growth moment. Right. And that's the power of words, words pave our way to thinking. Everything that exists in your world and in someone else's has a word to it. Even concepts that are vague have words to it and people understand it and can connect with it when there are words to describe it, when there are words to convey it. Everything that's in your mind that you know is a great idea, that you know is going to change the world has the capacity to do so, but as an unrealized capacity until there are words, words are contemplative power. You want to get better at critical thinking. If you want to be a thought leader, those things require thinking. They are around the area of thinking, the human activity of thinking. Communication is your way there. It is a contemplative power. Reflect on that and we move on to the second principle. Principle number two, communication is a creative superpower. Concepts are created with language. Connection is created with language, connection with people and connection between concepts as well. And with communication you can also create value that has an impact, the meaningful impact that you want to have on your teams, in your industry, in your company, and so on. So when you can communicate, it gives you the ability to command the room. And when you can command the room, you have the ability and the opportunity to have to impact their lives and to create the messages that move them. Think about it. The house that you are living in right now, before it existed on the street corner in which you live, it existed in the architect's mind as a vision in his mind. And then what did that architect need to do? That architect needed to communicate his vision to the implementers, the builders, and eventually communicating it well and communicating clearly and eventually that house lived existed then on the street corner for you to purchase for you to live there. And the same thing is true with all the objects that you possess in your life that have enriched in your life, that have blessed your life as well. I think that you own was once just a vision. It once did not exist. So communication has the creative power. When you paint word pictures and people's minds, it can help to create more impact. It can help connect people with your idea, connect people with your insights and connect people with the concepts that you have built from your knowledge. And as a result of that, you get to create the value you want to have in the marketplace. So reflect on that. Communications is a creative superpower. Principle number three, communication is a competitive superpower. You've been in your organization for some time. You have been in your industry for some time and you've been a team leader for some time as well. They weren't necessarily better at what they do and they weren't necessarily technically powerful or had really good work performance on implementing things. Not necessarily, but you're going to notice that time and time again, these individuals have rose and up into strategic leadership, simply because they talk really well, simply because they have the superpower of communication. And as a result of that superpower, they were able to compete and they were able to share their describe their value in way that the audience can perceive that value and therefore they have the opportunity to improve their opportunity. So competitive power, the competitive superpower of communication allows you to improve on your opportunity and allows you to be competitive because you are able to describe the value you bring and ignite that perception of value in your audiences. And therefore there is a fair exchange. Communication is your competitive superpower. Have you ever noticed that when it comes to competing on job applications, when it comes to competing in job interviews, when it comes to competing in performance reviews for promotions, even for the boardroom competing for that budget, competing for those resources, it is to the person who's best able to position themselves strategically, communicate clearly in a way that the audience can perceive value from it and draw value from it, and also to be able to build trust, which is also a perception as well, simply just by the words they say and how they say it. Whatever you are competing for, it could be resources, it could be positionative, it could be opportunity. So reflect on that when it comes to communication, how might you be better be able to create value so that you can capture the value you want to have in return? If you want to be able to know how to declare to your audience, specifically how and where your contribution is making the difference so that you can have more impact to have more visibility and therefore to build your legacy and grow your career, then I invite you into my mentorship. So this is a high level communications training where you can step up in strategic levels of leadership. and strategic levels of decision making. Only if you're serious about developing these skills for yourself, click the link below and look forward to working with you on the inside. Principle number four. Communication is selling power. Now, before you hesitate here, selling power does not mean that you have to be a sales professional. Even if your title is not sales profession or account manager, even if you are not directly in a role that is in sales, make no mistake about it, you're selling something. There's something that you are selling on a day-to-day basis, week-to-week basis. There's something that you're selling. And it would be wise and prudent to understand your own sales process as well and how to create values in the minds of the people that you are selling to. Communication gives you an opportunity to present your idea and to get that buy-in and that is a sales process. But more importantly, when you communicate well, it allows your audience to be more optimistic about what you are sharing and allows your audience to see the value for themselves and the benefits as well that can come from it. And more importantly, when you sell, it's important to be congruent with what you are selling and your relationship with sales. Now, the society and the media have painted a really negative image of sales that it is very pushy, that it is very negative, that it is very selfish, that it doesn't serve the people that they're selling too. And if you desire to be more persuasive, if you desire to get buy-in, it would be important to change your relationship with selling. Because what if I shared with you that when it comes to selling, selling is not something you do to somebody. Selling is something you do for them. And when you sell them on your ideas, when you sell them on your skill set, when you sell them on your solution, you have that ability to improve their opportunity and get the value in return as well. So sales, selling is the most highest level of service you can provide for your audience. Think about that. So the principle number four is that communication is a selling power. [Music]
