It goes without saying, trying not to overreact to any of this stuff. But, um, look, there's a lot of things I liked, a few things I didn't like. So let's get to it. Let's start with LA and Golden State. The Kessler acquisition for a night. Looks like. It's underrated. He went 12 to 12. I think he had 10 dunks. Um, that's all in 26 minutes. And when you play with Luca, your life as a center should be the easiest. Like that should be the easiest life for a center. Now, granted, you're gonna have to pick up a lot of stuff defensively, but on offense, it's pretty simple. Just be a target. Um, it's shocking that Deandre Ayton, well, maybe it's not at this stage of his career and kind of knowing how he's wired, but with his athleticism, um, and his touch and his shooting, like Ayton should be able to give you the role and the pop, um, because he's actually a good shooter. But look for all the obvious reasons with Ayton, it just doesn't click for him and with Kessler for a night. I mean, there's a play where it's not even off of a Luca screen or a double. Uh, Kessler just runs. He makes a decision to run when he's so behind the play. Like there's a good chance when he's looking at it as the Lakers are going from defense to offense. Where it's like, ah, you know, I don't need to go down there. Like they have numbers and he trails the whole thing and the driver gets stuck. He flips it to somebody else. And because Kessler is running full speed and trailing the play, he gets it back. Nobody's getting in his way and he finishes with another dunk. Yes. Against golden state without a center Draymond playing center. Their front line was Guy Santos, Draymond, and Yaxell Lindenborg, who will get to his night here shortly. Uh, so it's a. Good matchup for Kessler. Obviously as an aside, this Prezingis thing, like it's this odd autoimmune thing. Apparently, um, it's been going on for now we're into three seasons with this. He's always hurt that two year, $40 million deal was just, I mean, I know what, what the idea was, was, Hey, a stretch five who also is a rim protector, best case scenarios and everything, I can't believe they gave him that deal and now they don't have a center because they spent the money on. Him. All right. Uh, let's get to Yaxell and Luca here. Uh, this was fun. Okay. First and foremost, it was fun because Yaxell is an older rookie and Luca's looking at him. Like, I don't even know who you are most likely. And Yaxell is going to stick up for himself and Luke is going to talk shit. Luke is annoying to play against. Luke is going to get all sorts of calls. He's also nearly impossible to stop on dribble drives and. Uh, you know, Yaxell after the game references. So we'll play the cut for you here. Uh, here's Yaxell after the loss. I had a lot of respect for him, you know, just cause just watching, I didn't really watch the NBA much. I just watched highlights, seeing them, you know, kill people all the time, but then being in their firsthand, just watching all the whining and complaining. I lost all respect, man. Like that was awful. Like, like me getting frustrated. It's not about like, it's not about like, uh, the, the foul being called. It's about like him complaining the entire game and then you get the foul call. Congratulations, bro. And then you talk to me, like you did something great, bro. Come on, Tom, that's his week, you know? So it kind of like, it kind of threw me off for a little while. Cause you know, like I said, I had so much respect for him gone, man, gone. What were you two going back and forth about? I was telling him he sucks. He can't score on me. You talking, you can't score on me. I said it the whole game. Um, I said a couple of cuss words, obviously, you know, that's why I got the technical and all that, but I was letting him know, cause you know, he was laughing and talking all this because of that one foul call and he didn't. His only bucket on me was a banker from half court. Like I know that it's, it's a team sport. You know, he, he had, uh, what do you have? Uh, I don't see it. Oh, 28. He had 28 on us as a team. Me. I took my matchup personally. Try not to get caught on the files. Try my best. I was thinking about playing him with my hands by my back to see if that worked. Probably would've still got a foul call, but yeah. Interesting. Now I get his point because I do wonder. If, if Lindenborg didn't have league pass, I think he said, yeah, like I watched the highlights, so him saying like, I've lost all respect for him, like, whatever. That's a little dramatic with all of this. I think there's more good than there is bad in any of this stuff, because at least he was as a rookie, like trying to stand up to Luca, who's going to try to humiliate you and then talk shit to you the entire time. So like, is he supposed to like it? Is he supposed to just stay quiet the entire time? Um, I also think he fouled him a bunch. So to say like, he didn't score on me is entirely. Because he was getting to the free throw line against him, uh, because Lindenborg had all sorts of foul trouble throughout this. And then there's even a mic'd up moment that wasn't supposed to be air, but you can all see it on social media where Steve Kerr's talking to him saying, Hey, look, they call all of that in this arena, like nowhere else. They're going to call it all in this arena. So I think the positive there is you would expect somebody comes off a title at Michigan, who is a much older rookie, um, and his personality, if you've been paying attention, like this wasn't at all surprising, so I'd rather it be this than a guy that's scared out there. And they're going to need it from them because, um, this, this front line is already an issue for a team. I just want one more Steph Curry playoff moment and, um, that first quarter is just a reminder how special it is with these, um, Matisse eyeball like back cuts. Have you not, like, have you not watched Steph Curry at any point that must've absolutely infuriated the Lakers coaching staff on how he was playing Steph, especially in that first quarter, but, uh, really nice win, especially with the Kessler piece there for the Lakers. All right, Minnesota, when Ant is going like that, it looks like he's the best player in the world. It was so much fun. Um, the biggest thing that I was noticing, cause you're like, Hey, Ryan, you've gone five minutes. You haven't done any sub patterns. Don't worry about it. We have two for you. They are making a concerted effort here to stagger at least in the first game. So it would be something that I'd be paying attention to because like the idea of LaMelo is that he is going to free up all this stuff for Ant of the 33 minutes that Ant played last night. This morning. I think it's like almost 16, 17 minutes where Ant played without LaMelo on the floor. So it was like the first five minutes and then there's a stretch into the fourth quarter. But when you look at the sub patterns, as I was watching the game and checked it again this morning, it was very clear that it was like, okay, Ant's out early, or excuse me, LaMelo is out early. We'll put Ant back on the ball and then they bring LaMelo in and then they would take Ant out. Uh, they were subbed for each other a couple of different times in this. So just something to pay attention to if they feel like they're better off staggering these guys. So they're not completely abandoning. Ant initiating everything, you know, LaMelo made a bunch of threes, uh, it was a lot of fun. They smoked Miami. So, you know, what are we really learning here? Berenger, I thought had kind of a tough night coming in as the backup to Rudy, even though I liked him so much before the draft, whatever one game Kaminga came in, um, he had to defend Giannis in a lot of spots that probably wasn't a lot of fun. I don't know if Kaminga was like, I'm going to now take it back out on Giannis. He tried to post possession on him at the end of the shot clock at one point. It was like, so you're just going to back down Giannis dude. Um, he had two shots early in the game against Giannis, so I was like, gee, like this guy but he also made some buckets too and because of his athleticism if he just runs around like there's a tempo lineup here if barringer turns into something where they could probably just throw a ton of dudes at you that are going to run all night if they want to i don't know if that's necessarily going to happen but there's a lot of really good things from this group um here's the other thing looking at miami here janice is everything that you would expect he looks like he's kind of the outside option where bam is more in the paint because i was kind of paying attention to how they would like position them because you're not going to have two guys in the block nobody does that anymore it's been years uh not that i'm expecting or would want them to do something like that but i was just kind of like is there going to be times where bam is providing the spacing for janice to operate or is going to be the other way around it felt like janice was more uh outside of the paint the way he was getting his his stuff going clay played 16 minutes he started but again he played 16 minutes so it was it was pretty clear that they were like yeah maybe this isn't going to work because ant was hunting it a little bit and i actually thought like clay was kind of holding up a little bit more there defensively but i was you know looking at who clay has been the last couple years and then knowing how desperate miami was to bring him in i was like i wonder if they just told him he'd be a starter because it doesn't really make a ton of sense for him to be starting games for a team with big time rotations so this is the problem that and again i'm not like talking about this like miami's in all sorts of trouble because they got blown out at home to open the season here but this is just kind of an alarming rotation here where if it's portis at 25 minutes jovich who maybe i should stop liking he took eight shots in 24 minutes didn't make six of them um pella larson 24 minutes tim hardaway jr 18 minutes and then you add in clay that's five of your nine guys just to repeat portis who nobody wanted uh jovich larson who i do like a lot hardaway jr is going to come in and make shots it's like you just know that that's going to happen um but that's five of the nine for a team that's our guy sam vassini picked to make the nba finals bold choice all right tight one in new orleans it's just nice to see halliburton out there it's nice to see somebody who's so in control of all the key possessions and i'll point to the possessions of clothes because this is a really tight game um new orleans had fears in the closing game and they're not going to with trey murphy with dejante murray with zion uh with eve so fears at least for the night to start the season it's like okay that's what they're going to go with um at point guard and trying to kind of combine different dejante possessions with him and dejante is like a roller coaster at least based on last night zion once again has his great moments i mean he had a couple buckets there late we were like yeah this is why we we check in on him every single offseason even though i'm sick of hearing every single offseason update but they're in this game and they're going toe-to-toe pacers are missing a couple people new orleans seem to be making a real effort to try to get zu watch in every single defensive action and bring them away from the hoop but when it came down to nut crunching time it was all halliburton siakam and they were in the same thing like four straight possessions real simple high pick and roll siakam's rolling as the valve and then he ends up in either zion trying to recover to him where there was a layup where you know there's just a reminder that zion is going to of how hard this stuff is because they showed a really great camera angle where zion gets back to siakam but siakam gets a straight line into the paint and zion never is able to kind of like catch up to him and veer him to the right to make the shot harder but like just think about what we're asking hey show on this ball screen and then recover and get back to siakam and then also try to get an angle on him to angle him off on making this layup and you're just like yeah this is why this game is really really hard at some point and then you're just like hey this is why this game is really really hard at some point you know what would fucking help though is having some concept of help defense when these things happen i don't know what their help rules are but they ended up in this siakam halliburton thing where i think they switched it after they didn't want zion to have to recover and there was a possession where jeremiah fears ends up with siakam and it's in the middle of the paint right and siakam's trying to decide what he's going to do and then i'm watching him going like you're just not going to help fears and you know maybe that zoo being in where you don't want to get off of him that's fine uh nem heart's a shot threat but quentin jackson's out there because nismith's not playing and even though jackson the last couple years on very limited volume is kind of like 37 38 from three there's a play where dejante's just not even like paying attention to it and i have to think in that spot it's like hey if fears ends up in siakam in the paint maybe we need to figure out what we're doing what our rules are there because i certainly couldn't figure them out memphis memphis early early i said it before the season started because there's so much of this depth that i really like it's kind of just like who are the stars going to be and i don't think ty jerome's going to go for 45 every single night but it was a nice reminder of calves ty jerome two years ago um when we knew they weren't going to be able to resign him because he had that unbelievable stretch we even had him on the show uh it was so much fun but if ty jerome were doing what he did in a video game you'd put your controller down and not talk to your roommate for like a couple days everything went in for this dude and i'm telling you like some of the ugliest takeoffs again he doesn't look like he lifted a weight all summer but he got shots up he had a three where i think the ball touched his shoulder and it went in he had another one where i'm like i can't believe he's taking this like the seltzers love this guy in their offense uh everything went in again 17 of 25 he had it's because you're like watching memphis you're like line change i'm sorry i i just i did get pissed last night because ty jerome has 10 points in four minutes and 37 seconds everything's going it's like get them out of there this is our system and i know i know this is what the coach does i know that it's about having fresher bodies throughout the game i know that it's about a six month process and all that kind of stuff um but i i don't i understand like i just watching this game my entire life i'll never understand going this guy's unconscious right now let's get him out of there um let's make we make sure we get pippen jr in there right now because this we can you know and look i like pippen jr uh the gg stuff is up and down all over the place ed you're feeling them all over the place um booze are only seven points but he had a coast to coast play with a pass it was terrific uh i think athletically some of the concerns about him before the draft just kind of watching him run around with everybody out there like you're not looking at it going like oh i don't know if he's gonna be able to keep up with the rest of these guys like there's no point like the visual part of it did i did i worry about um cam boozer and any of this stuff um on the other side of it darren peterson in his debut nine points three is seven uh they did seem like they made more of an effort to get him on the ball in the second half they even played him with ace a little bit i'd say that utah is going to have to go through like a bit of a tinkering phase to figure out like who's comfortable in this offense and who isn't because it kind of felt like no one was except for kiante george and as i was watching kiante george i was thinking about peterson too because like peterson's just trying to figure it out like watching last night's game it was very clear like this is somebody who's going like what am i supposed to be doing here like i don't want to take too many bad shots but i also don't want to be deferential but i'm off the ball maybe too many possessions in a row probably the first time ever in his career um which i think is why will hardy was like let's get him the ball a little bit get him getting comfortable here but kiante to see that shot that he's going to be able to shift of like yeah i can score and i'm athletic and i'm fast and all that kind of stuff but i don't really know what i'm doing to a guy now where there's just no doubt in his game and that's what you hope for with like with every young scorer is getting to that point where you're you're comfortable you know you have the skills but you just need that comfort and you know again nba debuts for all of these guys all over the league last night there's plenty of possessions you can find where you're like well that doesn't look very good and that's kind of what's supposed to happen uh last two quick ones from last night paulo we told you that's why we don't quit this guy 35 7 and 10 10 and 12 from the floor lived at the free throw line the hub of their offense pass after just incredible shit from paulo and of course they lost because they could not contain alexander walker who just murders the magic he had 31 last night he averaged 28 a against them at four games i think his shooting splits what are they 56 and 48 in the four games last year so they've got to tighten up the defense a little bit which has always been kind of their calling card but the offense had been so battered or mostly it was just kind of nice to see the offense look a little bit better but there's a lot of stuff that's happening where it's kind of what you wanted from orlando where it felt like if the first thing didn't work and what they ran in the previous iterations of this offense then it was like okay well we're done nothing else is i thought the ball movement was a lot better you know whose ball movement i love was memphis like everybody i'm just telling you like memphis is going to be kind of this weird like better than these other bad teams which we already said this summer um but you know when i was thinking about like the tanking and all that kind of stuff it's like who's kind of who could like not have a great record but then win enough games at the end of the season to get in the get your shots up young man um 19 minutes 14 shots 15 points his first two plays were incredible but more importantly trying to figure out like the jaw dame thing the dame stuff off the ball looked really good and it was absolutely kind of like looking at the possessions those are jaws possessions and then it was up like they could have gotten dame even more shots in this one and by the way clinging is a fucking beast dude like do yourself a favor watch him donovan clinging like this guy might be like a real thing here and it's not gonna be he's gonna be like 20 and 12 it's just like i imagine other teams be like it sucks playing against this guy you know it's like a guy that doesn't even realize like how big he is and how much it hurts you know uh it also was 21-0 against phoenix in this one 32-6 and 43-12 after the first quarter so i don't know i don't know um i don't know if you really care about sub patterns for this game in today's new york nobody carries cash anymore but harry lehman still makes a living the old fashion way john tituro stars in the only living pickpocket in new york as a legendary thief who refuses to change with the times harry survives on charm instinct and decades of street smarts but when an unexpected score lands him in possession of something that's changing faster than ever opens october 23rd in new york and los angeles nationwide october 30th danny cannell took a little while to get danny he's a busy cat cover three podcast it's also a huge big 10 podcast if you're a big 10 fan and the early read every day on radio with roy philpott i imagine he can tell a few stories oh yeah fun to see you it's good to see you man it's great to be on you know it's not true it didn't take long at all to get me on i'm here i'm here at the drop of a hat i did have a question for you though because you know it's been a minute since we got to go shopping together in san francisco and do a little you know peruse the men's section at neiman marcus or sax but i saw you in a video in the car and a sweet looking jacket like shearling like over like oversized it's a nice piece i you might have to give me the details on that because i might have to pick one up i don't know how much i would get to wear it in south florida but you know we do get out on the road i need i need some i need some tips man i need i need to know where you got that bad boy i'll send you a link all right but you're not gonna like it because of the price tag it's i fit i knew it was a decision i saw it you could just it just oozed wealth is what it did it really did i mean i think i might have seen bobby axelrod wear that same coat you know i saw it i went done like i actually was checking out something else and then i would go wait what's going on there and he's like that's the only one we have and it's in your size oh he gave you the only one we have oh i love it yeah it's great so dang it now maybe i can't get it so i actually as we were like ringing up the two things i went i'm not getting those now yeah i can't get it i can't get all of it yeah i was like i'm just getting that and then of course they doesn't matter what you do they just go excellent choice sir yeah this is a this is a timeless piece like a staple it looks timeless you know you're gonna be able to wear it for the next 10 years no i'll probably be way bigger in 10 years so who knows um where do we want to start here where do we want to start let's let's ask you this is notre dame in trouble of not making the playoff yeah they are um although you know i talked to a lot of people at cbs in our you know data and analytics department and they swear that at 10 and 2 notre dame still has an outstanding chance to make the college football playoff and i mean i think if you're assuming they're 10 and 2 they lose to miami who's the current number one team in the country you assume it would be close right i mean it's hard to picture a blowout but then i would push back so here's where i would have the problem with it and i do wonder how the committee would view it it's like where are the good wins like that has to be in the equation like i think we value good losses too much we don't penalize for them so i i personally think 10 and 2 notre dame is out so i do think they need to beat miami i mean the only other game after that that's even remotely close to being a signature win is smu who just snuck in the top 25 this week it's in south bend i would picture them but that's not going to resonate as like a signature win so yeah i think 10 and 2 notre dame is out i think 11 and 1 clearly they're safe especially if they beat miami and i guess the other counter argument would be they didn't drop that far so is the committee going to drop them from four all the way out of the top 12 because they have that provision the top 12 they're in and i would say yeah the committee would because i think the committee's well aware of that 12 seed you know the the rule that they have so i think 10 and 2 notre dame is out can you remind everybody of the new provision that they have for this year which is supposed to be extended out six years but now is irrelevant after the playoff expansion at 24 so just because there is some weird scenario that i was reading about this morning is like what if byu ended up with two losses and we ended up in the same head-to-head thing and then you're going okay but if notre dame's in the top 12 like this could end up right this could end up being like a very weird a lot has to happen but there's a there's at least a scenario that i haven't heard people talk about enough with the new clause of like do you realize like what potentially could happen here with this face off that we had last year but because of the clause it's different right is because typically if you're the 12 seed you could get bumped out for a group of six team that gets in right so they essentially and in the exact scenario you're talking about as long as they were ranked ahead of byu and in that top 12 they're guaranteed a spot so they would bump up the group of six probably to 11 or bump up notre dame to 11 and they're guaranteed there but i do wonder if we're making too much of a big deal out of it because again the committee's huge and they're humans they know this provision so are they gonna go into that final meeting aware of that and like we saw them last year they dropped outside of the top 12 like they changed their minds and valued head-to-head but as long as they're in the top 12 they're guaranteed a spot and it kind of does protect if there's bid you know bid stealers let's say miami loses you know in the acc title game and so that means a second acc team is guaranteed the spot because they'll be the acc champion like notre dame would still be get a spot in that scenario you'd have to take that spot away from a big 12 or a big 10 or sec program does that make sense yeah it does and you know every year we do this and you go hey a lot would have to happen like we don't but after what happened last saturday it's like if we even have anything that resembles that again which you know i don't know that we'd have that kind of history where that many top seven teams lose again when it's never ever happened before but it feels like we're going to this this summer a little bit and then very quickly in the big 10 between oregon and indiana again indiana's 2016 being compared to 25 is entirely unfair and then ohio state loses at texas so you're like okay well the big 10 teams that i thought were maybe better than any sec team at least on paper in august like let's see how it looks like those three teams collectively don't look as strong especially fahey and a quarterback at ohio state now for saying for a few weeks but they should still be able to get through it all you would think just because of ohio state's advantage when it comes to talent um the theme of parody has been amplified here at least i don't know the i don't even really care what it means bigger picture but at least right now in 26 like there's definitely a statement to be made of why are you guys wasting your time with any of this kind of stuff but i mean one part is why it's fun but the other part of it is like the notre dame 25 thing into 26 of like is this going to be the correction and to your point which i love is never rule out them starting over from scratch for that last ranking and going and who cares what we've done for six weeks here this is what needs to happen now and i think they did the right thing last year with miami i did too i i thought notre dame got screwed as well i thought both because my notre dame fans were all upset because i was pounding the table for miami saying you have to honor the head-to-head but then as soon as i saw alabama pop in there with a blowout loss and the sec championship game i was like man they were going to keep alabama and they should have that should have been notre dame spot my opinion from where they were last year so yeah um i was so impressed with byu last Saturday you know I know that the TCU game messed me up a little bit with them because I'm just going like how are you going to beat one of the big boys with this kind of passing offense but like bigger picture because I still think BYU's talked about and like well hey you know great win um they don't play Texas Tech so maybe it's a big 12 championship game matchup like let's see what happens with Utah but then Utah struggling with Colorado because I just think Dampier is kind of like week to week I have no idea what to really expect where do you see BYU in relation to the other kind of more traditional name brands that we expect to be where BYU is right now so I've been pretty bullish on BYU I liked him in the game against Notre Dame a couple different reasons one so Brian Kelly does a week he comes on with us for two hours uh once a week on Sirius on the morning show with Phil Pott and he had called the BYU game in person and I was asking him I think it might have been on the air I don't even know if you've said this on air or not but I was like what'd you think of BYU and he's like they're legit and I was like what do you mean like are they just good for the big 12 could they because you know at the time it was can they win the big 12 and he's like they're as good a team up front on the offensive and defensive lines than I've seen and he goes and that includes when I was at LSU and when I was at Notre Dame like I think it meant it's like from a beef standpoint you know because I don't know if they have the some of the athleticism and some of the elite defensive lines and talent you would see at some of the elite schools in the Big Ten or SEC but they do have NFL talent I think that's the thing that kind of had me buying into him and I also think Bachmeier he gets a bad rap because he wasn't great last year he was pretty one-dimensional but you have to remember how he was thrust into that situation as a true freshman wasn't supposed to start they had the quarterback issue he gets kicked out then he comes in and he's a we already know what type of athlete he is like he's big he can handle the physical workload of the run game but he's not so this year two things one I think he's improved as a passer I think he's clearly more comfortable in the system and they have them some pretty legit weapons on the outside like Kyle Casper is a big physical receiver who's 6'6 started at Oregon transferred in legend Glaskers a dynamic weapon that he's got there and they're physical up front where I know the LJ Martin loss was big for that game who by the way should be back for their home stretch you know they're the running back who was big 12 player of the year last year so I think it's a physicality and Kalani Satake is a great coach I think there's also value in the consistency they have at that program you know they have a lot of older guys because a lot of them do missions and there's more consistency on their roster which I think is a big value now when you can't find that at a lot of programs like there's so much turnover at LSU or Ole Miss or anywhere out there a lot of these top teams because they're so portal heavy I think the kind of the consistency on the roster and picking and finding spots to bring in transfers is a formula that can work I love that point that's one of the best points you can make on BYU is that in a in a world where continuity is supposed to matter culture being around each other instead of this mercenary approach and now look when teams lose the coaches are going to blame the mercenary approach to how you're building the roster meanwhile we'll have other transfer portal teams that are just losing the game and they're just losing the game I mean look at Michigan's basketball team it's like so it could also work but if BYU has perhaps the most stable high profile program in comparison to all these other ones that should be an advantage especially in the sport of football uh Brian Kelly's saying that that d-line is as talented as anything he's seen in the SEC's is insanely inaccurate I'm sorry like I know that I don't that's why I clarified it though because I don't think he means from like the I think he means just from more of a size I don't think he means just from more of a size I don't think he means just like the body type like Jalen Carter Mikkel Williams right um right I mean Georgia had like five lottery picks yeah but like but now but they don't have every nobody has four or five everybody has no but I'm talking about then when he was in the SEC to say it's the same as that and you go there was a Georgia front like four years ago that oh we'll do a documentary on yeah yeah sorry I couldn't let that one go couldn't let that one go all right um I like this I like where we're at so let's just do this 24 teams in the playoff yeah love it I hate it go I know you would I know you would why do you like why does anyone like it oh because it's going to be incredible it's going to be awesome so there's a couple things so one I think I've been still alive what's that wake burn up your playoff wake is wake is still alive in 12 teams they're still very much alive they're still very much alive they're still very much alive in the 12 team playoff this year watch out it's funny because like that wake Miami game you go hey what happened here and then you go no no like this it all makes way more sense every week that goes by right um but go ahead so I will say this because I think I've been like campaigning for 24 teams I do think it was a big jump like if I was I would prefer like let's go to 16 first and see what that looks like uh that's out the window though the big 10 really did play a big role in play a game of chicken with Greg Sankey and they won Sankey swerved he had to turn because I think he was getting a lot of heat from his coaches saying wait a second you told us we were going to nine games and we were going to get 16 teams in the playoff and it really did have him in a tough spot because he didn't have any leverage like he his coaches were saying we have to expand and since 16 the big 10 was like no we're going to 24 we're staying at 12 I do think he won that one but I do think like ideally let's see what 16 would have looked like but there are so many examples of why I think this is going to be incredible but I'll say this like the one thing that I've heard is you know the regular season like it's been the best regular season in all sports and how much fun it is and how every single week means something while that is true I think it was quite possibly the dumbest way to determine a national champion in the history of sports and that goes back all the way to two teams when I think about how dumb it was that people voted on a national championship I think it was the dumbest way to determine a national champion and there was you know and sometimes you'd have split champions when you went to four that it was still incredibly stupid to think that we could have 12 people half of whom never played football don't really know the game and they'd have a get back they'd have a list of stuff in their room and they'd say oh these are the four best and like you'd leave out some quality teams that were 11 and one or pack 12 champions and you would leave them by the sidelines so I think that was dumb then going to 12 I think it was better and I think we I think the 12 team was awesome we agree on that like the 12 team has been awesome so far four was the best oh here we go four was the best for what like to kind of fake you into believing the regular season was awesome because every there were seasons when the regular season wasn't that awesome and games didn't matter for everybody like when Bama loses to Auburn in the Iron Bowl in 2017 and still gets into the college football playoff is one of those final 14 teams and they go on to win the national championship like that regular season game which is supposed to matter it didn't matter to Alabama but at other times we've seen teams lose a game in the regular season and it devastates their hopes like the inconsistency and like who gets the yeah but this is just your Bama thing like you were on the warpath about this every single time so anytime a team got pick Ohio State when they didn't win their division didn't go to the Big Ten title game and still won 2013 yeah I think you still had huge advantages of the Big Ten title game and still won 2013 yeah I think you still had huge advantages by being a big brand whether it was SEC or Big Ten you got the nod and other teams got punished way more so sure the regular season mattered for some and I benefited off this with 93 we won the national championship we lost to Notre Dame in the game of the century that game technically didn't matter like that loss didn't matter at the time it felt like it did but we still won the national championship you know because Notre Dame lost the next week but they were we were both one lost teams we both won our bowl games but we got the nod because a group of people voted that thought we were the best I'm not arguing for any of those systems I'm not arguing for like hey let's see what it says in the paper tomorrow okay so let's go to this system let's go to the 12 teams last year did you feel like Notre Dame Texas maybe you know Vanderbilt could have won the national championship potentially um look I think Indiana after we saw what they did and went through everybody I'm not picking anybody against them now that I've seen the results because they were they were beating an unbelievable lineup of teams so all right so what do you think that a very no Notre Dame's probably a no but don't you think they could have done what Oklahoma did or Alabama did like other teams that got the crack if you're asking me if another team could lose 35 to nothing I'm they were a drive away from winning against Indiana they almost got left out like that was the debate they almost got left out in the outside so then let's turn our attention to this year where I think the most important thing that I would want to harp on to make my case is this era is different and even I last a week ago at this time I saw people making the mistake saying there are only six teams that can win the national championship this year and they would have included Bama they would have included Georgia like the other mistake I heard a lot of people aftermath of watching Georgia go to Tuscaloosa and beat Bama, do you know how many people people I heard say, those are the two best teams in the country. We just saw the best two teams in the country. And maybe Georgia still is. Maybe Bama still is. But that goes to the process of we do all that. We've always been, who do we think are the best teams? And we let a committee decide who they think are the best teams. But in this era, with the portal, with parity, which I think is here to stay, I don't think this is unique and sort of a one-off season. I think we're going to see a whole lot more weekends like we saw this past weekend, including in the last five or six weeks of this season. I think we're going to see more craziness, more wild outcomes. I think it's going to be tougher than ever to pick what 12 teams we think are the best. So if it's that hard, why don't we give a bigger group the opportunity to play for that national championship? Right. But this is the disconnect in our argument here, is that you are saying, well, don't you think this could also happen? And the answer always has to be yes. It's sports. It's single elimination. The assumed things, like the reason we care about any of the stuff in any of the sports is that there's so many times you're like, well, hey, I think this team's probably better than everybody else. And then they lose. And that's why we keep coming back. My issue is you're going to be littered with eight and four dogshit teams that have not beaten anybody, that have gotten smoked in three of their four-ranked matchups, even if they were ranked, okay? And that the motivation behind this is really, like, the crazy part of this is that normally it's just, hey, it's about the money. It's not about the money in the way that we're accustomed to. Because when you do the math on the teams losing, or the conferences losing, the conference championship games, although I'm still a little, like, dubious on that one, because I'm like, isn't there more money, though? Because there's more inventory and that eventually, like, this will become a more valuable product. And it's not just about, hey, we're losing this much on this, and this is how much we're gaining. So this is sort of a wash anyway, because I've seen that argued, and I kind of look at that one and do a bit of an eye roll going. It's going to be a little bit more valuable. The NBC Big Ten package, and this is kind of like one of the things that I bring up in the depth argument, is when the NBC has, like, the second option of the Big Ten game, some weekends, you're like, that's the second best game that you can have. And they get killed on the ratings right now. There's other games where there'll be a big noon kickoff, and I'm like, all right, that's not necessarily that great. So Petiti in the Big Ten, who apparently is, like, ready to fix college football, he's been here three years, and he comes from baseball and just wanted to keep expanding. There seems to be, like, two parts of this where it's like, the Big Ten games needed to matter a little bit more. So now, because the games at the end of the season will have playoff implications because there's 24 teams, there'll be higher ratings. And then the thing that I think was the most predictable part of this is that in the beginning with the NIL, when you could go to your boosters, people that maybe didn't really feel like they would help in the gray area of the way you would get talent onto your campus. Now, hey, it's all out in the open. It's all legal. Like, you've done pretty well with your HVAC company. Like, you want to throw us $100,000? It's a write-off, and, like, we're going to say. And then that guy is so, like, narrow in his scope of how it all works. Like, he's showing up to his maybe B-tier college football program going like, hey, this is great. Like, you threw in a grant, $100,000. And then it's like, oh, he went 7-5 again. And you're like, what's the fucking point of giving you guys any money if it's never going to add up to what Ohio State, Michigan, Indiana, Oregon, what any of those teams can do, right? And we can, we can, play out this scenario on all these different campuses, all these communities all over the country. So when I read about, like, well, this will show some level of accomplishment, like, that should be the worst motivation ever to expand. So everything you said about the expansion, I can't really disagree with. I hate that the two motives for this seem to be, hey, the games at the end of the year will matter the way baseball fans feel more engaged because we keep adding wildcard games. I'm like, all right, so now I'm going to care about Minnesota, Nebraska at the end if one team's hoping to go 9-3. And then the other part of it of like, hey, people are getting more impatient than ever because in our college communities they're kicking in so much money to the NIL that they're not being rewarded. So now what are you doing? You're going to make a fucking t-shirt because you made the playoff as a 21 seed in 2030? Like, nobody should ever want that. That's not an accomplishment. That's rebranding the same fucking thing. So I'll say this, because you said something before about you don't want to see a bunch of garbage or an 8-4 awful team in and a bunch of garbage 9-3 teams, right? I don't want to see a team that's never beaten anybody all season long in the playoff that's 8-4. Right. And it kind of goes like, I don't want to see Notre Dame in a 12 team if they haven't beaten anybody in their 10-2, right? Like, it's kind of the same argument that I'm making. But I do think, so last, if you would have had it last year, there would have been one 8-3. 4-4 team in. If you were as a 24 team last year, it was Iowa. That's your favorite squad, too, by the way. I thought Iowa was a good team last year. They had 4-1 possession losses. Like, I think they would have been a nightmare. Now, who did they beat? That's another question. No, I liked Iowa's team last year. They were unlucky in a bunch of plays, whatever. I probably like that Iowa team more than I like this Iowa team that the AP loves. I kind of like them, too, though. Especially with Heklinski getting a start now. I think their offense could be a little bit more productive. You would have a huge boost for that Michigan win where you're like, I think last year's team was better. I'm sorry. Yeah, I think Ferentz probably would say that, too, at least at this point. Their offense might be better, but their defense isn't as good. But here's where I think this could be fun. I think there's going to be a ton of teams that are 9-3 that have beaten good teams. But we have to change our perception of what 9-3 might be really good, including this season. I think there's going to be a 9-3 team in the college football playoff this year. And I think there's probably five teams that you would look at and say, yeah, that could be a candidate for that. Like LSU. LSU, I think, is one of those teams. Ole Miss is a team that could be 9-3 and still have beaten some good teams and still be in the college football playoff. I think we have to change our perception of what is a good national championship worthy team in college football because I don't think we're going to see from here moving forward many 12-0 teams, many 11-1 teams. I think you'll see 10-2 is kind of a new barometer for that team might be a top five team and a bunch of teams at 9-3 that are really good. And 8-4 is probably where we are having that debate. But I think there's still going to be some really good teams and the gap isn't going to be that significant. I think there's a chance. Now, some of this could be screwed up by the ACC and Big 12. But I think the team like last year that went undefeated from wire to wire, like Indiana did, that was undefeated. I think we might look at those in college football like the 72 Dolphins. I think it's going to become a rare feat that a team just goes wire to wire, undefeated, unscathed. I think it's going to be that challenging to do that. Even with paying all the money, I just think it's harder than ever because every single week the other team is getting paid too. And even if they're getting paid half, like $20 million roster versus a $40 million roster, if you show up and you're not ready to go like Georgia was, they step, they have a 14-0 lead and then they kind of goof around. They get a couple turnovers. They get beat by Auburn. Like, I think you're going to start seeing a lot of those types of games throughout college football. That's a bold statement considering it just happened last year and then we're like, okay, we're going to wait 55 years for it to happen again. And it could happen. Miami could do it this year, you know? Yeah. And I think we're, I think you're pro the things that I'm not anti when it comes to the playoffs, right? I just, it feels very baseball expansion-y of the wild card where you're like, look at all of these teams that are in it. And you're just going, yeah, I didn't mind when they weren't in it. And as everybody always tells me that's upset with me being mad about expansion, it's like, well, don't you like the NFL thing? I'm like, I don't. I don't like that nine and eight teams are like, now I get a single elimination, a chance at this because of course you actually have a chance. And I, I love those high stakes games. I love that Ohio State-Michigan game from 20 years ago where it was like, dude, every thing about this game matters. Those LSU-Alabama showdowns where, and I know people are like, yeah, except for the year where they had the rematch and it didn't mean anything. That would be something that you would say. So you can use that later on. Let's see here. I thought Georgia Alabama was awesome this year and it did, the loss didn't impact Alabama one bit like they, but they were devastated. Like that was one that you looked at those players. You looked at Kaelin DeBoer. You looked at like, would it like that hurt? Like competitors want to win. And I don't think like, cause I, what drives me nuts is how everybody's all the regular season is not going to matter. It's going to be college basketball. These teams aren't going to care. No fan bases aren't going to care. We're talking about college football fans. Like these are some of the most rabid fan bases that are out there. And yes, I think they'll that will try to make themselves feel better by saying that game didn't matter. We can still win a championship, but it's still going to hurt. Like it is not the NFL because there's only 12 games. You only play a rival once. You're not going to play them twice, especially now getting rid of conference championship games. We won't see that rematch. So like, I don't buy any of it, but I do think this is why the structure matters because I think there's going to be incredible value in a buy. I think there's going to be incredible value in home field. So like, sure, if you're 11 and one coming into the last game in your Ohio state and you're playing Michigan, there'd be like people, they were going to rest their starters against Michigan. First of all, I don't think there's any way they would do that. Oh, I mean a lot of green he said it first, so I'll give him credit for that one but like but you also there first of all you're not going to want to lose your rival because your fan base will be livid but you also don't want to risk giving up your home field advantage or your buy so i think that i think the regular he took that one out of the oven he was like he said it on the on the windowsill for everybody to see it yes so i don't think the regular season is going to be clearly it's not going to hold the same weight every single week but i think it could be even more incredible and more fun and i think bringing more teams into the equation is actually kind of fun and that'll make make november that much more compelling sounds like you like baseball um i refuse to get excited about wisconsin at purdue if we had 24 teams okay i'm just telling you right now if somebody does a previews like this game means everything okay best team in the sec oh god i'll still trust georgia you know i had georgia winning the sec in the preseason i do think it was just the emotional letdown game auburn was coming off a buy gunner stockton if he doesn't turn the ball over late they kick the winning field goal and we're not even talking about this i trust gunner stockton like he was banged up as well in that game probably threw him off a little bit so i think it's georgia but like i i was i thought bama would have been in this conversation like after they lost to georgia i was still like oh i still like bama a lot but keelan russell's in a little bit of a they were without their starting center at tennessee they were without ryan coleman williams keelan russell's still a first year starter he had very much he's had two games in a row that are tennessee's defense is nasty by the way they've gone up against good teams i think they lose this week though against south carolina i know south carolina turned this thing around yeah a little bit i mean just after how bad it looked against bama you just can i ask you something that i saw on your uh your show your boy nate uh was buying an arch stock low i almost texted you the link and was gonna have have you like just kind of it wasn't after this week no no i know it was going into last week which i you know wasn't awful it was the oklahoma game he sent me a text saying the arch tape is still good and i watched the game i didn't think he had a good game and then i was free because i know nate knows more than i do i mean i'm not gonna even come close to debating that so i watched it all over again right i watched the whole game all over again and i disagreed with nate i did so that's and this is what's happening a lot because it's not only nate that i disagree with like there's been this debate whose fault is it is it arch or is it sark is it the play calling or is it the execution and again a lot of people i respect have said sark it's got to change at sark you know that's play calling the issue but when i go and watch the film i see throws that are missed i see throws that he goes too late i see open receivers running for touchdowns that he passes up on holding the ball too long like i think it's on arch but yet like i said people i like respect look at it and say there's a problem with sark and when you watch the film you don't know specifically what arch is being taught like there's a chance on a third and seven he sees press coverage on the outside with cam coleman the slot receiver is wide open on a little bench route and i look at it and i'm like why didn't he first down throw there's always the chance that he was taught if cam coleman has press coverage take the shot over the top i don't know that so if he's taught that then yeah that's on sark for teaching him to do that but to me i don't know why sark would teach him to do that like why wouldn't you give him the freedom to read it out and take the first down and take the positive throw and that's just one small example because i think there are instances you could look at it and you could be like well he might be taught this but i just see a play i see plays that are missed and i see inconsistencies and then i think when to like nate's point you'll see a throw like he made against oklahoma to get him back in the game or he made against florida where he moves around in the pocket and he fires a laser downfield and it's perfectly thrown in stride and you're like that's why you buy stock in arch but it's just not consistent that's the thing i think could get him benched who's your favorite quarterback probably two of them and i'll it's what he's doing at miami but he's been playing against lesser competition uh i think trinidad chambliss and we all forgot about him you know because after the first three weeks of the season everybody was like that's the best player in the country that's the best quarterback in the country and then he loses at florida without kiwan lacy he doesn't and by the way he was fine in that game when they got down big too like it was the two response touchdowns that i thought in lsu was why we all kind of fell in love with him and then i was like okay here's a spot like you've got to respond your defense doesn't have it and he did twice in that floor and then you just go so keep going because you're nailing it i it was not his fault they got run all over i think uh ball and clark ran for 100 yard each like it was not it was the best running back doing the country after that game right let's stop talking about anybody else right and then all of a sudden they like everyone just forgets about trinidad like just forgets about old miss they had a bye week but then they won two games in a row and trinidad just keeps doing his thing which is like throw for 300 throw for three touchdowns like it's no big deal now he goes to texas and i think he's gonna have a chance to show everybody because everybody will be tuned into this game that he's still the best quarterback in the country i like a layer there are some that because i do think there's been a trend this year and like the parody in college football you know who loves it the most nfl evaluators because i think there's some quarterbacks that might have fooled with a great stat line and they clearly could play their way back into it but like cj carr did not play great on the road in provo hoover did not play great and i didn't think anything was open for for car i was so impressed with the way byu just like whenever they throw the end zone replay at you and you're looking in and you're like where are the throwing lanes man right and they're winning the line of scrimmage they batted down like at the last second you see a byu defender come in and like bat the ball it was like they just they played great defense but i did think car missed a couple throws that you could have seen notre dame win by two times but it was a great defense and i think if he hits a couple of those throws i don't know why they weren't playing walton more yeah me neither because when he got a couple touches late you're like hey this is what we've been watching the last couple weeks or him maybe looking like the guy and i know like boob cars out you know number one they're big edge guy from boston who do you think is the best team in the sec i do think it's georgia i'm curious you know you know what i'm rooting to happen phillips is the is a horror show if he gets any kind of angle i think dandridge is a fucking beast at receiver taylor has been good as well so you know that part of it i always kind of expect a little bit more out of lucky at tight end um but then there's all sorts of guys in the defense like when georgia has a turnover on defense like not turnover is meaning i mean turnover on the roster like i'll have to watch the first few games i'm like okay i love number four and i love number seven and okay i love this guy you know cole um there's stockton i trust even with the fumble because i think bama's up and down with keelan and their offensive line in the running game thing like i thought they were going to be bad at it at the beginning of the year then i thought they kind of solved it and then i thought against tennessee there were just some short yardage situations where you're going what what like what is the disconnect with this team sometimes so that's a little too hit or miss for me and like i think levitt's kind of an adventure at lsb you and there's times where i look at their personnel on defense and go dude lsu should just be absolutely shutting some of these teams down and then you watch the kentucky game right and you're like what what the fuck's going on here but then so i i was going to mention lsu because i think they're in this conversation levitt i think one of the better things that happened to him was the injury because remember the first time we talked about him it's like he's not playing it yeah exactly because he's forced to stay in the pocket he can't rely on his legs i think this is a big week like a prove it or not week i think this is a big week like a prove it or not week for me to lsu because if they i was shocked lane didn't go for it on fourth and one keep the you know control your own destiny you get that first down you kneel on it it's done steady punts it away trust the defense then of course we know what happens they lose enough you know on the two-point play um but trade as is coming back for them this week sam levitt's getting more comfortable like it's hard to trust him because even his turnover issues why i didn't trust him this season because they go back there too much he bails in the pocket it must suck playing receiver with him i know but if he did like if we believe him and he got better and he's because it is his first year in the system and he has getting better like some of that might have just been early on i'm not 100 certain let me just get out of here if i don't see it if he's starting to see it a little bit better i can see lsu being in this conversation so people are so sick of hearing about my lsu talent argument um that i'm not i mean the 50 million dollar roster is pretty clear cut they have the most talent i think i expect and look the defense has been the steady force there the last couple years i think with this year i know wit goes down but you know they had daughtery so you're just going like this there's there's dudes it feels like all over the place um i think the kentucky game the kentucky game bothered me way more than the old miss game did the old miss thing made all sorts of sense those guys were way too amped up that place was on fire it took them 30 minutes to even get into the game i thought once they came out they started winning and they started winning the line of scrimmage in the way that I thought was going to decide that game against Ole Miss. and then it was funny too because like when i watched the old miss florida game i go this is the o-line this was the this is what i expected the deal from the d-line here in this lsu matchup and that didn't happen so uh it's been an awesome season so far and as i say goodbye uh just make sure you give a a quick hello and a hug to brady buckets for me who definitely liked me a lot more when she was like five or six based on the last visit there felt like there was of the nfl season he has an outstanding piece on the athletic right now that goes into great detail of how the communication systems work on the sidelines for nfl teams inside the stadium and he talks to active and former coaches players everything there's a bunch of great stories in there but it just gives you a greater level of respect and maybe even sympathy in some spots for when things go haywire um what goes into just getting the play call in so i want to spend some time on the back end of of this time we have with you mike on that story that you have up um let's start with this uh you have primarily like when i first started reading you a million years ago like you were my nfl team and i was like oh my god i'm not going to see west guy i was like this guy knows everything that's going on with the nfc west if sando doesn't think it necessarily so i i want to spend some time in this division um you and we referenced it on monday with nate tice you did like a deep dive and kind of the rams and how the special teams is letting them down and everything else and then kind of some response from around the league about how they look uh if you were to look at the thing that you think is most fixable and why it's smart to just not give up on this team because of the talent like what do you think from a football sense makes sense of the rams kind of getting back in the game and what do you think of this playoff race i think it's actually an offense uh the the crazy thing the special teams are a fatal flaw for them but uh i was looking after i wrote my column i wish i would have read seen this before but uh if they've had three kind of terrible special teams games this year you know where the statistically that was huge outliers they're two and one in those games actually won two of them they have you know i think maybe three or four games where they were pretty below average offensively especially for them that's the area where i think uh it hasn't looked as good as it's needed to be we had matt stafford coming off of a you know mvp season kind of an assumption they could keep that going and there's been some differences in the offense like uh i think they're less play action maybe a little less under center there's just something a little bit off there uh and i think if they had that going and really you know that's the part they've shoot they've got the quarterback they've got the coach they have puka naku and now davante adams is out uh but there's something just off on that component that's not letting them mask some of those other issues that i think are still there and will be there when they try to you know beat a more complete team in the in the playoffs but they're they're a middle of the pack offense right now statistically yeah that part just doesn't make any sense um and you can be let down by the special teams and you can get through it right i mean i don't want to be dismissive of it because it seems like the smartest coaches historically have prioritized that uh they've even spent draft picks like hey this guy might not even play receiver for us but we see something with him like long term on coverage teams and all that kind of stuff but like if i have to pick one of the flaws that i'm going to have i'm picking that one yeah no doubt and and we've you know i wrote about it but coming into the season from the standpoint of hey really the rogers mvp year of 21 and the stafford mvp year of 25 were derailed in the playoffs by egregious special teams outliers you remember the 40 the the packers playing that game at home it was like a they lost like 13 to 10 to the 49ers had a i think they had a punt blocked for a touchdown had a field goal blocked and it's like oh my gosh how many times have you seen that happen and then obviously last year with with the rams but you're right you can still with the top quarterback and head coach win 65 70 of the rest of your games and so that part hasn't been there uh for them and is and so they're they're exposed now it is and they traded away a lot of picks uh obviously over the years and so i think they have focused their draft choices on people that can come in and help them on offense defense instead of some of those guys being special teams mentality guys right uh that i think add some toughness overall to your roster just the way that you play your team gets excited when those guys are making big hits instead they've got a 155 pound kicker getting cartwheeled like he's on jackass you look like johnny knoxville you know flying out of a cannon or something and that no one gets excited for that so i think their overall roster part is part of it i did not love one of your current nfl coaches or front office members saying like hey super teams don't work in our league you know where it was like okay but this is this is a little different i mean they switched out verse for garrett which everybody would do they had issues at corners they invested in that but the this isn't new like when stafford's already in place when donald is coming back when mcveigh's been there i think shula's a terrific defensive coordinator like there's i don't know it just felt like a bit of a victory lap and maybe even premature about another guy who would likely in the same scenario trade for miles garrett i think though there's a lot of people in the league that wouldn't do that who'd rather have verse in the picks for sure uh i think really scary oh yeah i think miles garrett is uh a little bit of a mercenary type of assigning like i think he would be a great piece if it's really going well let's just let's just strip it back and say next year this is uh starting a new a little bit either mcveigh or stafford's not back and you're you're playing ty simpson and you don't have a first you don't have a second the next year you don't have a third the next year after that because of this trade are you going to hitch up the wagons around miles garrett i don't know that that he's perceived that way whereas verse to me was kind of heart and soul your your defense right i mean he was uh uh he was a guy who was going to play with his hair fire shoot you went to their practice you couldn't help but notice him now garrett hasn't played either so if garrett were playing maybe we would have a different opinion but but like that's part of the consideration here you know too he's not playing that was even sideways when you put together when you put together the super team you you inherit the uh egos and they'll have their own personal trainer or that you inherit the individuals okay it's not the same as having together your team and so anytime you do that whether it's in a broadcast booth and you think hey these two guys are the best announcers they don't always mesh together right it's this is about still about a team so uh i think there is a consideration of bringing that in so what happened in the right away uh garrett got sideways it looked sounded like to me with the team over his rehab from the knee and then he played and was outspoken after the game against the 49ers in melbourne about he couldn't be himself and then he's going to get surgeries that to me felt like somebody who came in in and had a new medical staff with them and they were on the same page didn't it feel like that to you yeah i guess i mean i i think we're playing the results a little bit here of like they're two and four and he hasn't played so everything that then happened in the transition over is now a problem or i think a lot of this stuff happens around the league where you know i know guys that were doing stuff totally on their own and we never ever heard about it ever yeah yeah so it may just take time for their team to come together but i think it's a good thing that they're you know i think there's some of that but uh i i feel most concerned about the injury prognosis after this last game when you have davante adams with a ruptured hamstring sorry he's not going to be the davante adams i don't care when he comes back this year that's a bad deal ruptured hamstring and then kobe turner who's very good defensive tackle is now now injured uh puka nakua will see i mean he hasn't been able to stay on the field as consistently as you'd like and now you don't have the insurance with uh with davante adams and by the way puka doesn't have a contract so where does that all sit you know you found money for to bring donald back you found money you know for this garrett deal what about me right those are all going to be questions that you're gonna have to deal with uh down the stretch for this team i would just throw in too because i don't want to do any more on the rams here i think the way nakua plays what we all love about it you also go like what's the long-term prognosis of like playing receiver that way which is maybe why there was hesitation on not meeting the money demands for what I think we'd all agree is a five receiver in the league okay let's talk too he has not field stuff well right right yeah on top everything else uh let's talk seattle because this is a huge spot against kansas city here uh everybody's been in kansas city which we're going to get to a little bit later i mean it is an overwhelming public play here because you're like hey i get points and i'm going in with patrick mahomes against what's been kind of a disappointing team coming off the super bowl run you had an awesome nugget in there about what donald isn't during these late game scenarios can you share that with us again and you know when you win a super bowl we don't get to like point any of this stuff out but it's it's fairly alarming when you're asking donald to kind of have that stafford moment that we've seen three times um that have happened in all these losses by the way as well well no doubt and and if you think about last year for a lot of the year he was leading the league in turnovers he might have finished in the lead he did have a great nfc championship game i thought where he you know they wouldn't have won it without him he outdueled stafford uh i thought that was really good but yes i did look at his uh uh you know his gotta have it sort of final five minutes of the game when you're you know you're down by one to eight points and uh i think he was ranking 28th out of 30 quarterbacks with at least 100 such attempts since entering the league three touchdown passes nine interceptions three fumbles and 16 sacks on 146 of those plays so i think it look most of these quarterbacks that are kind of in the tier three-ish range that that's the definition is you know it's a it's a it's a passing game with in dosage right it's half a run game in a defense and you can win with them and if you have a great defense uh you know maybe you win the super bowl and that was them last year i think donald does have talent but uh he has not functioned at all well when under pressure and has been under pressure a little bit more this year i think that's gotten to him so they have to figure out how to mitigate that and i think the answers are uh they have to have a starting caliber running back they've kind of gone down to replacement level backs with obviously kenneth walker gone but not only that they used a first round pick on the notre dame back to darian price he's been out and and zach charbonnet hasn't played yet this year he was he was a code number one uh with walker last year so they have had no threat on the run game and have had fumbling issues and things that have really prevented them from winning games they would have won with their defense normally so they have to sort of regulate donald just not make it you know not make him have to do as much offensively you think they win this weekend i do i i mean i'm not super confident about it but i think this is one where they really need it more they got a little bit of a mini buy with a kind of a probably a a lot of truth telling behind the scenes with mike mcdonald who i think kept his staff in certainly on the offensive side of the ball during a lot of that because you know friday saturday when they didn't have a game on sunday and so this is going to be really big for them uh i think they need it more than kansas city and one of the interesting things i'm not a gambler but somebody pointed out to me that the public favorites in these primetime games you know the the the results have gone against the money is that true i'm kind of thinking of like tampa bay everybody thought was going to lose to to dallas and won the game and so this could be one of those where uh you know seattle needs it more uh if they don't turn it over to the same degree i think they probably do win the game but i think it'll be hard okay now let's go with san francisco um i love that san francisco seattle game even with some of the mistakes that we're talking about here a little bit and there are mistakes on both sides i think darnold's interceptions issues were like a little tougher to explain than like the purdy one that they had that again on the tv broadcast brady was terrific on all that kind of stuff uh this is the first year and maybe seven or eight of them where i went hey i don't want to hear about the niners this summer going into it but i think it's going and yet here they are and now people are wondering is this the best team in football we can talk about the age of the roster and all that different stuff but like give me the sense of what you think about this team bigger picture and maybe also as you share with us throughout the week you know what other people are saying about a team that felt like they were the third team in this division back in august well i think they have a tier one and a half defensive coordinator in raheem morris and i don't think that that was really something that we were talking about as much coming into the year seems like a really good fit for kyle shanahan who wants to be a explosive play suppression he doesn't want you know that's what he respects in a defense and he he would much rather play offensively against a defense that takes chances and gives up the big play to make the big play so he's got what makes him feel comfortable in raheem so far so i think that's been a really nice revelation for them defensively even without bosa and some of these guys that have been hurt uh their secondary hits i love how they play they tackle they're on the edge of getting penalties i like that for them because uh that's you know frankly the defense has been something they've had to overcome a little bit i thought they might have to overcome this year as it sort of got further away from those great pass rush years that they had the other thing is i think the offense has been driven through pretty more now my question is what happens if and when mike evans isn't part of that are they going to need more from mccaffrey and need more of the run game i think the offense is what people think is probably the strongest most durable thing but i do see a scenario where it really does come back to earth if evans is out and the workload goes up for mccaffrey i would love to know do you think mccaffrey shows the same juice he's had in the past i'm not willing to say no but i just haven't felt him as much uh and so if like i think it's easily scenario where uh mike evans misses the final six games or isn't available for the playoffs and that that would worry me a little bit yeah i mean you're stribbling goes down early and then if you look at the top four in the passing game because purdy's never been better i mean as good as he has been in the past like the stuff he's doing this season is off the charts and the stats are there to back up everything like to take a qbr jump of in the 70s which is terrific to flirt with those low 80s like that is elite elite stuff and that who he's who he's been this is mvp type of stuff from him but if you go through the top four in the receiving game for them you're like okay evans is he healthy at the end of the year kiddo is he healthy at the end of the year debo who already has had multiple spots where it's like okay he's done for today and then you've got mcafree and because when i was looking at earlier today like after those four this the next highest i know i've thrown four names at you but like the fifth guy in receiving is demarcus robbins with five catches like this could look very thin and i know we're doomsdaying scenario when i out here but there's a reason why people were kind of off of them as the oldest roster in the league yeah i think all those things are still there but you have to give them a chance a lot of credit they're probably going to win the division i think at this point and then you know i still think seattle is going to be a tough one for them in the end and if you look if we were to just put together like a uh you know some kind of a visual that showed purdy and the offensive production you know game by game you're going to see all the ones that are kind of in the red and the negative are going to be against mike mcdonald so and even including this last one purdy did get it going on the on the two scoring drives late i think he went nine of ten and did some good things uh but overall statistically it was a bad game seattle had to be like historically bad offensively fumbling in their end zone own end zone to lose the game or else that narrative's different i think that defense is still going to be a problem for them and it's maybe more of a problem for them later if and when some of their guys are banged up so that's still going to be the hurdle for them but i think they are in great shape to win the division and you know be in the playoffs and have a successful year we all love clicking on trade deadline pieces the nfl maybe delivers a because like i feel like all the writers get together and like do it and i'm like oh that'd be fun that'd be fun and it's like okay but none of that's necessarily going to happen however as a plugged in guy is there anything that you feel like hey this is something that could happen that's a that's a great question well i think that uh i think philly is the team people will be looking for but the reality is they're going to unless they just lose their next three games you know they could still be in the division race and i think it's harder than to make those types of moves if you're in the division race uh and positioning for the future so you know i think that's a team to watch but i i don't think they're in that mode yet uh indy is very interesting now with the new gm and they don't have picks next year uh you know because they made the sas gardner trade which i thought was ridiculous at the time uh paid way too much for i think it was a desperation move uh and it isn't going to work out to that degree so you know deforest buckner uh quentin nelson who don't have contracts for next year and for all we know they do they want to resign them do those guys want to be there deforest buckner kind of seems fed up to me so you know could those types of guys have agents that work behind the scenes and try to facilitate something to one of these teams that could really use that to get over the top uh i think that stands out to me and i would love to see you know deforest buckner would be a great ad if you imagine if you know green bay did that or the 49ers got him back or whoever one of these teams added him i think that's a bit would be a big one to watch uh the last couple weeks is this a reminder why jordan love finishes so high in the qb tears every summer i tell you man i was ready to write them off i just it just felt like it was caving in on them and i just even matt lafleur just seemed like he was kind of losing his mind a little bit there so i say more power to him i think they saved it i think this week game against Detroit, I mean, if they win this game against Detroit, we're almost going to be picking them to win the division. division. Now we'll see what the bears do tonight. You know, it's a Thursday night game, maybe they win, but, uh, I sort of like where they're at and it wasn't expecting to like where they were at just a couple of weeks ago. So I think it's just a reminder that sometimes don't talk yourself out of the things that you thought too soon. And that includes the Rams as well. You know, just their, their injuries have kind of gotten me leaning maybe out on them. But, uh, sometimes those fundamentals that you saw coming in, even on a team like the 49ers are still there in the end. Are there any of these smoke and mirror teams that you kind of like Cleveland at four and two Pittsburgh at four and two? I mean, I actually want to include Denver in that four and two group, even though I love that defense. Like I think Denver's defense, like we focus in on so many of the ones that we should, but God, I love that D and, uh, like to me, Houston is an obvious one that I think, you know, I don't think, well, you're, you're talking to me who has a good record that, that I think actually that is bad, but I see what you're saying. Yeah. So of those teams, I definitely don't like Cleveland. I just don't, I don't, I think it's a nice story, but I don't think they're playing well enough at the quarterback position. It's going to bite them. Um, Pittsburgh, like I think Pittsburgh could make the playoffs, but I don't really see anything beyond that. Um, I don't like the giants at all. So, you know, probably not too much. Carolina's hurt. Carolina's hurt pretty good, you know? So I'm still sort of want to see the quarterback do it over the course of a whole season and all that, you know, I don't think he's done that yet. Yeah, that's, that's fine. I just think, you know, if you wanted to go by like nationally televised game boost rankings, Bryce Young's game against Detroit is going to carry him for months. I mean, he was fantastic in that game, but you know, that's what I appreciate about Collins or is, is that he, he just told us, he's like, I went back and watch every throw from last year. And he's like, I went in going, he was basically telling us in the nicest way possible that he expected that he was going to hate the tape. And I think them being a playoff team last year kind of makes you go, Oh, well, Hey, Bryce Young is figuring it out. It's number one overall pick. And I didn't like any of it last year. Uh, it's been better. They're passing more. I think they've gotten really creative with trying to fit the things around him that make him totally comfortable that game plan against Detroit. It's maybe the second time I've referenced it since that game happened, but watching, I was like, they have completely like throwing all the chips in of trying to get the ball out as quick as they possibly can tonight against Detroit. So I'll be like looking at Carolina against some of these fronts and maybe we find out a little bit more about Carolina. Um, looking at it this week against Tampa. Cause you know, as bad as Tampa is because of the quarterback stuff, it's kind of Minnesota Vikings light with the way I think that they attack you defensively. So when I look at Carolina, what's that? Go ahead. I'm going to learn a ton. They got Tampa green Bay and Denver the next three weeks. And to me, Tampa has played good defense. Green Bay has pulled it together a little bit with, with Jonathan Gannon has looked good against the Cowboys. I think that defense is okay. Are we going to see, uh, Michael Parsons by then? That would be week eight. I don't, we'll see. That's right around when it was expected, right? Week eight or nine, I think. And then they play Denver the week after that. So I think, I think if, look, if we're having this conversation in a month and they've gone two and one and he's done consistently against, you know, two of those three defenses, I think we're having a different conversation in the meantime. I think there, as I wrote about my column, it's like, you know, Tua had a good fourth year too, you know, and they ended up paying him and it was ended up not being as sustainable. So how much of it is trumped up for, for this quarterback? I don't think it's nearly to the same degree as it, as it was for Tua. I feel better about Bryce Young, but he's always going to have the limitations that he, that he has physically. And you have to, you have to be really honest about that. Tampa fourth in EPA per play right now. Yeah. Defensively. Um, Denver a little bit lower than I thought. So maybe I, Denver is lower than I thought too. It surprised me because, uh, but I think Denver is still good. Yeah. Um, all right, let's talk about this piece because it's so much fun. It's different. I know a ton of time had to go into this. Uh, so sell us on, no, I'm not, I'm clicking it. That feels a little forced, but sell us on like the motivation of like, Hey, I want to be able to tell this story that probably nobody actually knows it's happening every single day. We're watching these games. So the last, the last sort of anecdote in the piece was the one that got me started, uh, thinking about it. And that was, I was talking to North Turner a while back. He's kind of a fun guy to talk to retired now, but he was telling me about, I've always wanted to do something on the headsets. And he told me this great story that when he was coaching way back in the day as receivers coach with like the Eric Dickerson era Rams and John Robinson was the They had a established offensive coordinator up in the booth and Ernie Zampezi. He was telling me how that because the head coach didn't wear a headset that, uh, there, there could be this tension. And so they were up big against Detroit late, late in a game and Ernie Zampezi, the offensive coordinator who kind of came out of those Dan Fouts offenses through the ball a ton called two pass plays in a row, uh, you know, midway through the fourth quarter in a four minute offense. And John Robinson, the head coach was sort of bitching about it. Like what, what are we doing? You know, and so Ernie Zampezi hears it through North Turner's he's up in the booth. He hears it through North North's headset. And he's like, what'd he say? He's like, what'd he say? Hey, you can imagine there's probably this tension between student body, right? Running at USC head coach, John Robinson and the Don Correale, Dan Fouts, offensive coordinator in Zampezi. And so Norb is trying to play the middleman in between the peacemaker. Hey, it's okay. Let's just get out of here. And Zampezi just goes, screw it. I'm out of here and leaves, leaves his post at the booth and heads for the locker room. So the whole rest of the game, North Turner has to pretend that he's having a conversation with Zampezi whose headset is just sitting there on a desk. There's no one in there. And so he's like, North's like, so you like 50 slant here? You know what? He's making up stuff so that John Robinson doesn't know. Cause he knows that would be a bad thing. You know, if your boss knew you vacated your post. So, you know, they, they North calls 11 straight runs to end the game, 11 straight runs in the game. And then when they all make it in the locker room, by the time they get to the locker Tim Peasey's showered, shaved, you know, he's ready to go. He's getting ready to get on the bus. And John Robinson's like, geez, Ernie, you got down here fast, you know, and Norv and Ernie are looking at each other like, you know, and they never told John Robinson. I was like, well, you guys must laugh about it now. And John Robinson died like two years ago. They never told him. He's like, hell no, we're not telling him. He'd be pissed now. You know, and I was just like, how many times do those types of things must happen that we never hear about, right? You'd never know what's going on. And so that then led into, I wanted to collect the anecdotes and then it led into, well, let's just explain how these headsets work, right? So it kind of became a two-part story where we got into like the mechanic, you know, the technology and how many people can wear a headset, who's saying what to here's what goes, what happens when it goes wrong, which is the funny part. All right. So the process, um, what's the best way to kind of start without getting like too deep in the weeds of like, here's what you need to understand. Like that there's what, 32 people for per team that are allowed to actually have a headset, correct? Yeah, that's, that's right. Uh, there's, there's the 20 of them can be on the sideline and 12 can be in the booth. Not everybody uses all of those, but sometimes you'll have, you know, obviously you're going to have within that, you're going to have an offense channel, a defense channel. Uh, you may have a third line for like your game management guy and the head coach is going to bounce between all of those, but you're going to have a third line for like your game management guy and the head coach is going to bounce between all of those, but usually like the offensive coaches will stay in the offensive channel. The defensive coaches stay in the defensive channel. And then your game management guy, maybe he can hop around, but, but he may be, you know, on, on one with the head coach in some situations. In other cases, he may not be. So you've got these belt packs on your, on your, you know, on your belt where you might be clicking over to different lines, which can add a whole nother layer of, if you click into the wrong line and say something when you're pissed, you know, that, that became a little bit of a storyline. And then whoever is, there's someone communicating with one player on the field, the quarterback on offense, and then whoever has the, the, the green dot sticker and a speaker in their helmet on defense, you know, that's being relayed either by the defensive coordinator or somebody, probably the defensive coordinator into that guy. So, so there's that level of communication, uh, too. So there's a lot of kind of areas where all of this can break down or get dicey. And, and then you've got the play clock going, which is 40 seconds on offense, but it's short, on defense, because, uh, they can snap it before the 40 seconds, you know, on offense, you know, how much time you have on defense. What happens is you're playing Sean Payton and he, like he did this in the playoffs last year, he substitutes at the last second. So what he'll do is he'll, or like Vrabel did this, he'll have two guys start to jog onto the field. And then one of them gets to the hash mark and turns around. And what that does is it prevents the offensive coach from telling the defensive coordinator from telling, uh, from knowing who's going to be on the field. What's your personnel group, right? So on defense, it gets very, uh, urgent to find out what personnel is going to be on the field before we can even call a play and know who we're going to put on the field. Right. So that's much more like, uh, angst written on the defensive side. And you point that out too. Like there's a funny line where Mike Mart said he like switches over just to check in because it's generally thought throughout NFL circles that the offense, the defensive channel is pretty buttoned up. The defensive channel is fucking chaos. And that switched over just to listen just like hey i'm the head coach let me just check in here for a bit and then turn it off immediately he's like i'm gonna get a headache in here you know and so uh yeah and it was i love the story too of like when ron rivera was a the guy who had to identify the personnel and the defensive coordinator of the eagles under andy reed was like give it to me give it to me you gotta have it gotta have it and you know ron rivera's like dude he like left and got himself a hot dog he's like you know and then the defensive coordinator's like getting crickets on the line you know uh because the you just get fed up with it you know you can't can't you can't give them the personnel on defense when we're in a tv timeout but these coordinators on defense want it now because they can't do anything without knowing so uh i think the stress level of the defensive side plus the defensive side is usually more about emotion anyway um you know is gotta be palpable um can you tell the story about the other communication where you they didn't realize that everybody could hear it on the offensive side because i love that one i love that one too so if you go back to those great 90s packers teams with brett farb reggie white you know all that you really had mike holmgren was the head coach and he had so many guys on that staff who'd be john gruden's and steve mariucci's dick geron's they all became head coaches andy reed wasn't even a coordinator so at one point uh there was a great story that i'd heard initially from andy reed so andy reed was on that staff i think maybe coaching tight ends and there was a lot of people who were on that staff who were on that staff who were on that a long-time offensive line coach named tom lovat who later coached the cx offensive line when holmgren was there and so these guys are all good buddies but you know in the heat of the battle uh stuff goes on so what had happened was they were having a long drive down the field on offense and then it it stalls down i think in the red zone as holmgren the head coach and play caller calls like three or four pass plays in a row which the line coaches hate that you know offensive linemen hate that you want to keep stick with the run and a lot of these offensive play calling coaches as you know they're not going to be able to do that they're not going to be able to do that they're going to throw the ball so holmgren throws it three four times in a row the the drive dies they might have taken a sack or something so holmgren's on the headset kind of bitching about that we can't we can't block anybody he's frustrated he's blaming the protection and so tom lovat the line coach is hearing this and normally he would just he tried to click over to andy reed because those two would commiserate and he'd be like cut the so he says to andy reed you know you tell holmgren to stop you tell this you know and effort to stop acting like a little bitch you know and you know holmgren's a power coach imagine saying that to sean mcclay it went over the whole headset you know everybody here so then you can hear andy reed go hey tom tom they can hear you and so now everyone's looking around and tom like you know holmgren's hearing click click click click and he's looking around and and he's even looking over for he goes and he i think he said you're talking to me you know like you're talking to me here you know it'd be like it'd be like the producer behind your back ryan you know just mf and you and saying you're the worst you know guy he's ever worked with and it goes into your ear you know you're like hey are you talking to me that's holmgren and so then uh holmgren's trying to look over at tom levada on the sideline and tom won't look at him i just love that the whole dynamic of it that all these guys kind of remembered it a little bit differently but like 85 percent of it overlapped it was just awesome there's so many good stories and you need to check it out all my producers loved me but i do remember doing a local radio hit where i couldn't do it like at the time they wanted so we dialed up the isdn lines from my studio in bristol and i sat there we got dialed in and they were two local hosts it was pennsylvania i'm pretty sure because i think it was like a penn state station and the fucking morons were talking about me because it was like messing up their schedule but i was like hey i can do it but i can only do it during this time because we're taping interview this show's national by the way and i remember they were like how the fuck like we're it's not even van pellis and i'm like oh my god i'm like oh my god i'm like oh my god i'm like we gotta wait 20 fucking minutes for ryan fucking rossillo like this is ridiculous and i heard all of it and i was like what do i do here i go you know what be awesome just don't even say anything and do this so i do they're like ryan rossillo joins us you know he's fucking great he was kind enough to give us some time and they were mother and it went on like they were both guys were in agreement they're like fuck this guy i can't believe we have to wait and again i wasn't making anybody else wait it was just very clear that i the window before the show that i had it and so yeah they're like oh let's we gotta do this again sometime i'm like you got it guys no problem because we've all been there it doesn't mean they didn't like you they're just they're just blowing off steam you know and oh i went into my program director after i said you could tell those fucking guys i'm never going on i've never done on there again yeah i was like and they'll know why yeah yeah yeah i did the uh you know i remember years ago uh you know uh a colleague had forwarded me like some expense that got kicked back you know and he's he's like do you believe these guys you know and i screwed up i replied but it like went to the you know the top of the executive assistance of the top person at the company you know no it wasn't the athletic and i was like oh and f and believe you know these guys you know i totally was just had his back i was just trying to commiserate with them like these guys you know and i listed off a bunch of stuff and then i when it when it went i was like yeah right after it goes i was like oh i knew right away and i was like i i was like all right is this how you know you used to hear about people getting fired for this type of thing and luckily i must have had a enough equity built up they're like we got you sando we get you you know uh but it was one of those moments where you're you know you sometimes say things that you don't a little higher stakes on uh but the thing is the players are running in so fast they'll probably get over it a little bit quicker so i encourage everybody to check out the piece and of course read the pick six column every monday for all of you nfl fans mike always has great stuff in there that we reference on the pot on mondays thanks mike thank you i think draft kings isn't available where you live think again draft kings an official partner of the nba is now available in all 50 states so wherever you nba league pass on us so you can catch more nba action anytime anywhere the alliance marches on what were the results last week uh you and i are hot three straight wins for you and i were three and two on the season uh kyle is on a little two game skid here he is two and three that's what i get for getting a little chesty but i did take the pats live by the six and a half and that did work out but uh yeah yeah officially a bum the hook got him yep okay kyle carries early though do not forget that you know it may not have used a couple swings in the last few holes but that first tee box he put us right in the fairway totally listen we're already way ahead of last year we've hit we've got a parlay to hit already our records are better than last year except for kyle but i'm not worried about him so we're doing fine yeah you can't ever scout kyle though you don't know what his approach is going to be um so kyle why don't you get the board again it's always different get us in the fairway again okay uh i'm actually taking the jets minus four and a half now that that whole thing's over thought they put up a pretty good fight could have been uglier if uh mr brown didn't drop like eight passes but i i like them against miami and for you no maybe a t-shirt jersey if the rest of the season goes well but uh so yeah we're taking jets minus four and a half uh against the dolphins and the jets are home so i think uh i think that one happens all right i'm gonna go rudy i'm gonna take the texans minus ten and a half uh playing the giants playing nine it's a big number it is a big number um but i think this is kind of like a hey are you real texans or not like if you're real you're gonna this is the game they win easily uh i'm not a jay jim or carly kyle i don't think you should be even though you had like a little bit of a blip last week of looking decent kind of in garbage time i think the texans win this one two touchdowns okay all right i like it we love the texans on this podcast uh okay we get the draft kings notes the weekly notes on what is going on out there some player props right now we got bryce young over 250 yards against tampa i don't know if i love that one with that defense a lot of bets on the rogers getting over 200 yards in new orleans savion williams is the second most bet player pop on draft kings right now uh four catches last week for the packers against the cowboys so the number must just be low and there's articles being like they're going to get this guy involved here a little bit jamar chase usual suspects as far as the public teams uh it seems like a lot of action on the lions the bucks and the chiefs i will uh what's the latest line right now seahawks chiefs two and a half two and a half on draft kings yeah minus two and a half right yep seattle minus two and a half nobody wants to lay those points everybody wants to uh the chiefs you're like oh my god patrick mahomes i get it i think it opened at three i get two and a half points with the chiefs the seahawks offense the record the whole thing um that's why i'm going to give out the seahawks minus two and a half three favorites what could go wrong put it that way no unders hey we hit the under last week i know i know that thing was easy too whoa it's 13 10 a fc north action anyway download the draft king sports app today and use code ryan on draft kings new I'm not coming in a little hot because, man, my meters went off the chart there when I intro'd in life advice. No? All right. Well, you're the one who should let me know. It sounds all right to me, but if you're seeing red. I'll do it a lot. Well, you know, I'd like to get everybody's attention going there a little bit. I don't know what's going on over here. All right. Let's see. A couple quick thoughts. 6'2", 280. Basketball comp is end-of-career. Haslam is I usually just watch the pickup games at my gym while I do cardio on the side. That's a good comp. I haven't ever had anybody get that creative with it before. I'd love to hear Ryan's thoughts on the mobile balls. What's that? I said, do you also try to fight people who are playing while you're not playing? But then you never know. Is he active tonight? Or is he out? And I was a coach tonight. There's something to be said if you can just be like a heat lifer. They treat you well. Yeah, that's one of those, like, how do I get, like, that $100,000 job where I do nothing? Donis Haslam had that hooked up for the NBA version of that for a while. Kyle, would you take $100,000 a year every year until you were 50 right now? But it was like you can't do anything. I can't do anything. So if you have any itch you want to scratch at, like, age 38, it's like you can, but this is over. That's the deal? Yeah. I'm locking you in. $100,000 a year right now, but you can't do anything. I don't think so. McKinsey's more expensive than when I left. Yeah, I don't think so. Inflation alone, you're going to be real bummed out at, like, 42, buddy. Yeah, yeah, totally. Yep. That's a no. Tempting. Tempting, but no. Yeah. It's like when you're out there and you're going, all right, we'll do a long-term contract. And you're just like, yeah, but are you, do I cost more? All right. Anyway, love to hear Ryan's thoughts on LaMelo Ball's uncalled travel. It also got me thinking about a type of basketball content I can't stand but somehow still watch. Guys filming at their local YMCA explaining why something that looks like an obvious travel technically isn't. As a huge basketball fan, I'm curious where Ryan lands on those videos. Does he appreciate the rules breakdowns or does he find them as annoying as I do? I think you can all probably guess how I feel about those stupid. This actually isn't a fucking travel based on this interpretation of the rule as the guy, like, hop steps into a pivot, then gather to, um. Look, the LaMelo play actually pisses me off. If it was, if it was Ant, would it piss you off as much? No. Yeah. That's self-awareness, kids. Yeah. I do find it funny because it just feels like rules in sports just kind of changed overnight. And I was like, did anybody? Did you? Did you get a memo? I didn't. I didn't get a memo. Like, all of a sudden, like forever, like the tush push was illegal. And then it was just legal because the Eagles were doing it. And like these, like, gather steps all of a sudden, they're just like not traveling anymore. It's like, I just did I miss something like that? I miss like the NFL meeting changed the pushing of the pile thing because it used to be like with the bush push. The whole thing with liner in that play is he's like trying to show that his hands are off because it was illegal. So football did, in fact, change it. Well, we see NFL did the NBA one. They allow these things to evolve. Evolve in directions that really, really upset me. And, you know, I just never understood why all of a sudden I remember Van Pelt calling me one night after like a Harden game. He's like, how is this thing to the side? It's been a travel for 50 years. How is that not? And for anybody that's like, well, credit to him for understanding. He's like, no, we all knew like what it was or what it wasn't. And for whatever reason. I don't know. Like, I was excited to see the Wizards last night. I watched a couple of Trey Young calls. I turned it off. I switched to a different game. I just went, oh, we're doing this again. So there was no A.J. DeBonson last night for them. Although Keyshawn George is just worth the price of admission. Big night against the Bucs. What's that? Big W for the Wizards, though. Yeah. It's the Bucs. You can't you can't sleep on the Bucs early. We had a PFT Stanford Steve photo. That's a lot of jerseys, too, which is great. Easy like immediate favorite. I love that their mascot's name is G Wiz. It's awesome. Actually, John Wall was on the call a little bit there with Drew Gooden. That was kind of fun. They had a nice. So I did turn the game back on a little bit later. But I did have like a October 21st. Like, you can't be this mad about a Trey Young call. Like, take a break. Yeah, this. Yeah. Step out of the tee box. Yeah. Go back to the Bulls game. Watch the Raptors smoke them. Relax. Maybe you pick your ball up here. We'll meet you on the next hole. So that's. I'm admitting I'm the problem there. OK, it's. Yeah, that's good. I just went. Oh, so we're right back to this. Huh? You're just going to jump backwards into the defender. I thought we I thought we cleaned this thing up. And it's like, OK, all right. Rant over side. G Wiz is cool, but like stuff. The Magic Dragon is the best one, right? Like, that's incredible. It's a pretty great name. Yeah. No, no, no. That's also kind of crazy. Just want to put that out. It's all good. We did take the G. Wiz is so not creative that that's what makes it so great. Yeah, it's like a cereal box mascot. Almost like a name for some sort of cereal like that. Yeah, totally. Yeah. It's like when I had a prep for the wrong Brandon Marshall interview and I went. Oh, what are you up to? You know, it was like whoever was in charge of the mascot was like, oh, my God, I had to name the mascot today. Like, when's it do like in five minutes? Like, Wiz, I don't know. Gee, Wiz. Perfect. Done. It does feel like a missed opportunity. Not naming it Gandalf, right? Like, that would be pretty sick. Probably some probably some rights, rights issues there. Yeah, but it's pretty sick for us nerds. But like, you know, longtime Bullets fan. Yeah. Who never cared about that stuff. I'll be like, what's his name? OK, so I don't know. They should do a crossover night. It's like a fourth movie coming out, which probably doesn't isn't necessary. Sorry to be dude. Nolan doing that. I'm hearing. Oh, I didn't see. Anthony Gandalf is a future one. One of the lesser wizards. Like, we're going to get John Wall back on. So, yeah, I would agree. Throw it in the notes. Yeah, I think he's got more recruiting stories, too. Honestly, there was. It would be great if you were like, you got one guy that was like, did it seven times with seven different recruiting visits. I mean, she was like, I heard when he finally starts telling you shit that he should be like, oh, man, volume three. When he came on years ago, it was like, yeah, I used to go to these luncheons and guys would just put money in my pocket. Like people that had a few people like, I can't believe you would say that. And he was the one that went to the Patriots, like had that crazy night with the Pats, right? It was like McGinnis. McGinnis and all those guys. Yeah. Yeah. Good call. Good recall. That was a good one. My antenna was up for that one. All right. Emails. Ryan is right about parenting. We're not going to read that one. Thank you. It's a good summer one. All right. I'm going to read this one. Hey, guys. 32, 64, 185, 415 deadlift, sub 105 high rocks guy, which probably means nothing to you. So picture running interrupted by pushing sleds and doing chores competitively. Pictures. attached for context shirts off pictures but if this guy's competing i think i think you have to take your shirt off those things so congrats to everybody involved basketball comp josh hart if you remove the nba talent left the rebounding enthusiasm i'll chase every loose ball and make you wonder whether this particular possession in a wednesday pickup game warrants that much effort i need advice on returning to the gym after becoming the subject of an email you never want to receive i'm unmarried no kids and relate to what ryan says about how comfortable being alone can be i've spent stretches living the same way work lift eat alone watch a good show bed repeat even when i connect with someone on a dating app i catch myself looking for reasons not to interrupt a perfectly organized tuesday night find a reason buddy he's telling you you don't want to do it for another 20 years i want to see if they're going to use darren peterson off the ball a little bit more in the second half you uh so exercise became part of that lift in the morning run at night often listening to this podcast healthy activities but i built a routine where i could get through an entire week without making much room for another person eventually i realized i needed to combine things i love with actual human interaction i've done crossfit when i was younger but i'm retired from recreational gymnastics and barbell snatching conveniently a new strength and conditioning gym opened in town good programming good people and classes i started genuinely looking forward to i became friendly with the regulars the plan was working unfortunately my digestive system was running its own program i was having issues with uncontrollable gas during class a friend or two had mentioned it previously but things escalated until the owner emailed me afterwards saying it had become a major concern among people and affecting other members that's brutal that's going to be a tough email yeah i was mortified apologized and paused my membership while addressing the problem hey we're gonna freeze it 30 60 days we're both taking a break we don't normally freeze it here sir but we're gonna grant you this gonna tinker with the meal prep for a little bit i'll get back to you i've made substantial dietary changes my first contribution to the life advice community avoid sugar-free candies at all costs no problem i won't return until i'm confident the issue is managed but even assuming that part is resolved how do i walk back into a room where i know at least some people are aware of why i disappeared do i acknowledge it once with the owner then just show up and act normal make one self-aware joke with people i know my instinct is to get ahead of it with humor but i also recognize nobody signed up for a press conference about my digestion this guy's kind of covered every angle of it i appreciate the self-awareness part of there the bigger issue is that this gym was a meaningful step out of a comfortable isolated routine i don't want embarrassment to become a convenient excuse to retreat into it again finding another gym would be easier but i actually like these people how would you handle the return and how much acknowledgement turns an awkward situation into an ongoing bit i'll regret starting because of the email i think i would talk to the owner i guess what one thing like the in the health crossfit community like diet's probably a big part of it this is probably like maybe a well-known thing if he's not doing anything out of the ordinary right i mean i wouldn't get sugar-free candies but i don't know is there like too much broccoli or something like is there something that like the health community already knows and like ah been there or you could just lie and say listen i was on this this medication and uh you know my bad maybe they'll feel bad for you now it's too much information you know whatever but i think i would just talk to the owner because i'm coming as i unpause the membership but i think that's probably as as far as you'd want to go the problem would be if the owner mentioned it to the people who complained to the owner you know if that would be the issue but if this is a strictly professional ownership situation people mentioned it they did that's true but i'm saying if you just mentioned to the owner and he's like yeah stinky told me what the issue was he said it's all fixed like or do you think it just dies with him and i don't know i think i would mention the owner if you're gonna unpause your membership and come back really the question is yeah i fixed my diet you get it you know health health food stuff or you're just like hey my doctor had me on this thing and you know now i'm managing it is it mostly dudes crossfit probably not probably not yeah so if it was dudes i feel like i wouldn't really care i mean you might not care either way uh i don't know how close are you these people i think it's i think the easy solution is just to find another gym and put this all behind you you're just started you're a new you're a fresh new guy you know nobody knows about your past gym though he likes the people do they like him is probably the more important question i think they'd get over it like if yeah but i mean if he's like self-aware enough and maybe makes it i wouldn't it wouldn't be the first thing that i said like day one getting back be like hey dude fix the diet we're good to go and every like there doesn't need to be an announcement but like if you're talking to guys on the side and stuff like maybe just make a joke about it here and there and it's probably how much i don't think people are gonna be that mad at you long term how much do you think it had to be before like do you think it was multiple days multiple classes it had to be awful yeah see that's kind of where i'm wondering like you just let it go you know like if something's wrong with you i'm like i would leave and not finish the class and be like well look i i have the class and unfortunately my stomach's messed up but now the rest of you guys are going to pay the price for the sugar-free candy decision the condensated windows and my fart just around here like that's awful it's kind of like on a plane where you know if it's somebody that's really old and you go all right you know what are you going to do even though i know the olds are like yeah i'm i'm farting on a plane now they've taken the mile after you served my country you know retired eight years ago this is what's going to happen uh i think if you're you know certain age like everybody else you don't want to do that to other people so i'm a little surprised at your comfort level of just multiple classes where something was wrong and you just were like well okay i'm just going to keep doing could be one thing though like is that like oh he knows usually you let one go and you're like ah fuck you know that was not that was not what i was thinking also knowing it comes from you maybe you think it doesn't smell as bad as if it's a foreign substance you know what i mean if it's somebody else's it's tough so i think you know your own brand isn't as hard to stomach i think as anyone else's but there's also some guys that can live in this lane you know i think about like younger i think like when you're younger and you're in college and you're the guy that farts in front of girls and it's like you know you're the guy that farts in front of girls and it's like you're you're just kind of getting out of the way and there's just certain personalities that i've seen one i've never been nor do i want to be that guy so i but i've had i remember like one roommate in particular and girls loved him and he just wouldn't care and he'd laugh he'd think it's the funniest thing ever and like he just ripped the band-aid off on that social awkwardness thing so therefore like he was winning because it was just never ever awkward for him again and it was just sort of accepted where there's a bunch of other people obviously like most of us if you be super embarrassed about the whole thing so look maybe the gym culture thing's going in his favor it feels like you were a little aggressive on multiple days of dealing with this issue um i think the press conference idea to your point like that doesn't necessarily need to happen i think you just go hey diet was all messed up i think gym health nutrition people are going to understand that okay you go back to the owner go hey i feel terrible about this but that's a bold i mean this guy's taking his shirt off in these pictures sending them to us and he's ripped he looks like a good-looking guy like maybe you'll get away with it a little bit more than saying the guy that's not as attractive but it's going to be a bold you know walking in there that first day good luck but you know what like after that it probably realistically probably is behind people are going to talk about you for however long like it's going to be probably a reoccurring joke behind your back for like a while if you don't care about that and they're nice to you and you like the place it's probably not the end of the world yeah he's got a full he's got a full week besides this so you know you're not a loser you got shit going on so uh this is just a part of your week man it's all right that back to ryan's buddy though like the just ripping farts and just ripping the band-aid off there was he hot he's a good-looking guy yeah all right like because i was gonna say like did they friend zone him immediately or is this guy like also hooking up with these girls because i would say that you know girls that there's a but he was he was so disgusting about certain things you know but then i remember there was a bit of a controversy because then everybody had graduated it was like immediately everybody was getting their apartments and it was almost all boston new york city right and so like a bunch of dudes because it's the first thing like there's that awesome couple year window of like everybody's out of school then everybody just wants to visit everybody all the time in their cities and like just still pretend you're in college except with like money coming in and better apartments and all that kind of stuff and i never forget there was a bunch of girls that everybody was friends with so there was like a road trip to kind of go meet up with them and they like visited their place and he saw like a thing of q-tips and he thought it'd be the funniest thing ever to clean out his ear that were notoriously like he would do the q-tip thing it would just be like alien be like what the fuck dude and um he put it back in to the thing and now the tuxedo seemed kind of weird right and that's yeah and there was like a it was really funny too because like even one of the guys was like when do you think you'll stop doing stuff like that yeah just can't laugh at this one dude yeah and then he lost his power yeah but he always kind of got away with it he always kind of got away with it but i think there was a transition of like post-college of going yes like it was it was gross but funny and now we're supposed to be adults and now it's not funny so who knows i never i never uh got an update on that it's a long time ago should i tank a kid's flag football game 38 years old six eight dude we got some size on the six eight two twenty given that frame as you can imagine no impressive gym stats but i'm still in there lifting and still able to do uh still able to easily dunk a basketball and be a Luka Garza. Gravity affects me more than I'd like, but still highly effective on the offensive end before getting exposed for lack of foot speed on the defensive end. Here's the situation. I'm the head coach of my seven-year-old's flag football team. We're in a relatively low-key rec league in our metro area, and our team was not blessed with much talent nor coaching talent as I spent my formative years on the basketball court, not the football field. Three kids didn't even know basic rules of football at the start of the season and were playing teams that are using jet motion and reverse passes to spank us by four touchdowns plus. End of our season tournament is this weekend. It is structured where the worst teams play each other, and then the winner of that goes on to play the better team. We finished in last place but can compete with the two, three teams in our division on a good day. I guess the other bad teams, if the other team is missing a key piece or two. If we play one game and lose, we're done in an hour, but if we win enough, we could have a group of kindergartners and first graders, and their parents and siblings on the field for three to five hours. I had one parent email me semi-jokingly asking us to lose so we're not stuck there all day. What's the play here? Do I just play it as a normal game, ensuring adequate running back reps to all the players and just bank on our lack of talent, sending us home early? Do I purposely give the ball to our lesser talented players who couldn't outrun a sloth on high leverage third and fourth downs? Do I mysteriously have our lesser players play an extra quarter in relation to the better players on the team? I love you sports, and I can coach most of my kids' teams to try to set up a positive example and always have a positive attitude. I'm highly competitive in my own athletic and work pursuits, but it's a switch I can flip to not have on for my kids' sports at this stage. Personally, I'd rather be one and done this weekend, but am I cheating the kids out of something if I coach this even slightly differently than any of the other games? None of them will remember, and based on current build and talent, I'm guessing one to two even play football by the time they're in middle school. In the end, I don't think the kids would even notice that I'm not playing football. But I'd probably feel dirty for about 30 minutes until I got home and was able to watch some Red Zone. Would love the Hives' mind's input on how to handle this. Keep up the great work. If these kids were eight or older, I'd say let them try to win a game. But we're talking five, six. See ya. This is where we need the Greg Popovich respect the game. You know, sounder. Like, it does feel a little bit dirty. I think you have a built-in excuse, though, like to rotate and be like, hey, you never know if we're going to be here all day. I got to keep the guys fresh and I'm not going to get anybody hurt. So that's an easy one. Keep them fresh. This whole game is the fifth corner. Yeah, you got to wear and tear. You know, you got to monitor that. So I think that's a good excuse to like maybe not play your best players all the time. And it'll probably take care of itself. They're not at the threshold that I think you're doing something wrong. If things go wrong in these five and six year old lives, it's not going to be because of this game. Some lesson that wasn't learned about giving it your best effort. You know, I think messaging is super important. Hey, we're going to go out. We're going to have a ton of fun. We're going to do every everybody's going to touch the ball today. You know, if it's our last game, let's make sure everybody feels like they're getting rewarded for their effort all season long. Maybe you're even telling all parents, hey, everybody's going to touch the ball. We get seven quarterbacks. It's going to be awesome. Running backs all over the place. So I think if the messaging covers a bit for some odd sub patterns or why is your third down back? Not really playing on third down. Five and six years old. I'm with Kyle on this. There's kindergarteners in jet motion. You can't do it. It's fucking crazy. Yeah. All right. Easy. I mean, some of these guys, the five year olds, how many are going to even remember this? I think you're in the clear here. I don't like that. I said that, but I think you're in the clear and you'll be able to do it for the show today. Sorry, Kyle. I say, and you'll be a hero. That's it. I left the window there for you. Sorry. It's all right. And it closed. That's how, that's how quickly the holes closed in the NFL. Thanks to Tom, Kevin, so Rudy and Kyle, all of our shows are available on Netflix. Ryan Rosilla show, Barstool Sports. I'm out.
