Hi, I'm Ali Roper and welcome to the Wiser World podcast. When I was a ninth grade world history teacher, parents would tell me all the time, "I wish I could take this class again." And honestly, I get it. Most of us were taught world history at a point in our lives when we weren't all that interested in it. We memorized names and dates, took a test, moved on. And so we forgot it or we never really learned it in the first place. But now the world feels closer than ever. Headlines move fast. We barely remember from school or suddenly in the news and a lot of us are realizing we want to understand what's going on. We just don't know where to start. And that's exactly why I created Wiser World. This podcast is designed to make world history approachable, interesting and easy to access especially for busy adults. Think of it like an entry-level world history class but without the homework. Just clear, concise stories about how countries became what they are today. Let's cover history, culture, politics, geography and the key turning points that shaped the modern world. Most are 20 to 50 minutes long and you can jump into any time with no prior knowledge required. History matters because we live in a big interconnected world and we need to know more about it. Understanding global history gives us context for current events. It helps us recognize patterns so we don't repeat the same mistakes. It gives us empathy for people whose lives look very different from ours. And studying the world is an antidote for entitlement. It gives us much needed perspective. Humans everywhere across continents and centuries have suffered endured, built, rebuilt and created incredible beauty. And when we learn about each other, we become better at helping each other, better at navigating the present, better at seeing nuance instead of stereotypes. Because ultimately, we can't change the world if we don't know anything about it.
