Winners and Losers from the Patriots-Seahawks Season Opener!

The Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots 13–10 in a tightly contested game that highlighted stark contrasts in offensive performance. Drake May, the Patriots’ quarterback, was a major point of criticism, throwing three interceptions—including a critical one in the fourth quarter that led to a collapse—despite the team having a strong defensive core. The Patriots' offense was particularly weak, with minimal progress on drives and only one touchdown, signaling a season in trouble after a high-profile Super Bowl loss. In contrast, Mike McDonald’s defensive unit delivered a dominant performance, turning a 10-point deficit into victory, showcasing his coaching effectiveness and the team’s defensive depth. The game also revealed deeper systemic issues, such as the Patriots' reliance on a volatile offense and the lack of consistency from key players like A.J. Brown, who left the game with an ankle injury. Sam Darnold’s sudden exit due to hip pain raised concerns about player safety and healthcare access, sparking commentary on inequities in medical treatment. Additionally, the Rams were criticized for their extreme travel schedule, which likely contributed to poor team readiness. On the positive side, the Seahawks’ run game, led by Brian Florey and Jadarian Price, showed strong execution, and individual performances like Cooper Cup’s game-winning catch and Jaylen Waddle’s 120-yard performance underscored the team’s offensive potential. Despite the game’s lack of high-scoring drama, it provided key insights into coaching effectiveness, player health, and team resilience, with Mike McDonald emerging as a clear winner and Drake May a major loser. The episode also touched on broader themes of healthcare disparities and travel logistics in professional football.

Try new groupie setting missed from Maybelline, New York, Maybe it's Maybelline Alright, we are back here on the ringer NFL show with Deontay Lee and Billy Gill, the three of us were together after the Super Bowl back in February after the Seahawks put this back down on the Patriots. This was a very different game, but the end result is a Seahawks victory. Deontay footballs back. Are you ready? Just let the takes fly. I mean, football is back. It took us a while though. You know, football definitely had, you know, a little bit of mucous hanging out the eye for a little bit. You know, took a little while for us to get rolling, but I'm glad the ball is back. And I think that we finished this game at least with something pretty exciting and engaging to talk about. Billy, how we doing? It took a little while, but you're ready now. That's game one of 272. You predicted all the results of the season. I can't remember if you had Seahawks of Patriots for this one. I had, I had to see yawks on this one. So one and oh, one and oh. All right. 272 and oh, it's still alive. I had a question for you about that shield. Deontay, I don't know if you know this, but I went through. We were doing our predictions for the different divisions and then the playoffs and all that. So what I did is I put it out the schedule and I went over every single game. And that's how I decided who would have what record instead of just arbitrarily looking at a team and saying, oh, that's a team that's going to go, you know, 10 and seven, whatever. I said, let me do the work and do this. But then I didn't take into account like, am I just doing wins and losses or was I doing the spread? I just did wins and losses here. I think I'm just going to stick to that. That's good. I think that's why I think that the exercise of printing out the entire NFL schedule and predicting it alone is sick. Oh enough behavior to where you have to add the layer of picking against the spread. People didn't really like my results. We're going to be perfectly honest with you. And I made a copy of it because I could put this in like an Excel sheet, but I didn't. So I was like, let me make a copy so I don't lose it. And then I was going to put it over into an Excel doc, but I haven't found the timing because that seems like very time consuming and I already wasted so much time doing it. Well, listen, that might be a frame or if we go 272 and really, just 272 and oh, collectors item. So we're still alive. All right. We're going to do some winners and losers, the great way to analyze any football game because there was a lot happening here. I mean, you could have stuff on the announcers. You could have stuff on the commercials. You could have stuff that happened in the actual game. You know what? I'm going to call my own shot because I think we all probably have the same loser here. I mean, this is where we have to start the conversation. Drake May. I mean, Drake May, that lack. I'm not even going to do the analysis. Let's just say, we all have Drake May as our biggest loser, Deonte, you are a Drake May fan. I like Drake May too. Billy, where are you on Drake May in general before this game? I wasn't sure we were kind of talking about whether or not he had the most to lose this season a couple episodes ago. We're saying which quarterback might look differently this year. And we were talking about maybe it's Drake May because he kind of had that disaster. So source playoff run last year. We kind of attributed it to injuries and we said, okay, well, he's going to come back healthy. Let's see how it goes. Is he going to make adjustments? Is that the real Drake May that we saw in the regular season last year? Did he benefit from a weaker schedule? And we got off to a bit of a rough start this season, you know? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Deonte, what's that? Give me the analysis on Drake May three interceptions. Obviously, terrible pick at the end. How do you make sense of what we saw on this football game from him? I think I would say he was not helped by his office, of coordinator very much for the first three quarters. A lot of May's best plays were scrambles, you know, trying to create stuff outside of structure. And then you get to the fourth quarter with the one possession lead and then May lost in the game, right? Like this is a very, this is not necessarily a bad argument against QB wins being a real stat, but I think this certainly kind of lays out the case that I make that QB losses is a very real thing and that it is much more likely that your quarterback will cost you a game than it is that he will win you a game. And I think that's what we saw, right? You're driving, you're at midfield, you get this play action passed, you decide to take this shot down the sideline, you get the Neomy I appreciate interception that kind of kicks off the meltdown and you go back and watch the play. And like that's one for me as a coach, we're like, you're sitting next to the quarterback in the meeting room and you're saying, why not just throw the check down? It's second and nine, my friend. Like, let's just get to third and five and see if we can move the chains. I would say the second pick in the middle of the field to Julian love that was very reminiscent of the Super Bowl interception, right? Where you're trying to force the ball in the middle of the field. I thought it came out of his hand a little bit funny and it just floated and levels able to get underneath it. And then the last one is like the most inexplicable of all. I don't know what the game plan was there. We're trying to force the ball in a clear coverage in the corner of the end zone, right? Like that would be that 99% tile level throw that you don't need when you're already in field go range and have a chance to be able to extend this game or maybe get a little bit closer before you take your shot at a game running play. So just like layer by layer as a fourth quarter went on, this became less of a, what is Josh McDaniel's as offense doing for Drake May and more of a, why is Drake May doing this in crutch time moments? And are we dealing with a legitimate issue now that is kind of how did him? I guess for the last three, four games that we've seen of them going back to last post season. Yeah, I mean, that that last play you mentioned the situation is what makes it so inexplicable. You are about to tie at the very worst. You're going into that play being like, all right, if we don't get the first down here, if we don't get it touched down here, we are kicking a field goal. You were well within field goal range. We take this thing to over time. It's us against true lock. We have at very worst a 50/50 chance to win this game and he just makes an inexplicable throw. I mean, the call Billy, you know, Toreco said it right away. He's like horrible decision by Drake May. And then I swear Chris Collins worth it in talk for like 90 seconds after that. He didn't know how to make sense of it. It was a weird play called. I mean, it seemed like we were headed to over time. It was a given. I think part of why this is such a disappointing performance for Drake May 2 is the Seahawks defense was injured. Like they had a lot of injuries on their secondary. And he had a 10 point lead with their backup quarterback. All he really had to do was not throw three interceptions the rest of the way and kind of just eat up clock, have long drives and they should have won this game. But he kind of played them out of the game. It could be the play calling could be in their sections. But it didn't seem like a game they should have lost given all of the advantages they had health wise in that game. And one of the winners, not that we're going to get to winners yet, but like one of the winners was one of the excuses that we had in the Super Bowl, which was Will Campbell. Will Campbell was healthy. Will Campbell look good today relatively speaking compared to how he looked in the Super Bowl in the playoffs last year. Yeah, it's, you know, coming out of that Super Bowl, it was like, are the Patriots a little fraudulent because of the schedule they played and now they get to the playoffs and their offense looks horrible in four straight games. Or is it as simple as Drake May is playing with an injury? Will Campbell is playing with an injury? They don't have very good wide receivers. And so that's why I go again to this game in sight. Like you said, Billy, the sea hawks go into this game. Nicki Minwari does not play. There are other safety does not play. They lost Rick Woolen in the offseason. They lost Kobe Bryant in the offseason. These were some new players that they were integrating in this game. Meanwhile, the Patriots come into this game, mostly healthy on offense. And they still look terrible. I mean, if you look at the advanced stats, the ante just looking at like EPA per drive, this, the Patriots worse two games the last two seasons, the Super Bowl. And tonight, this was that bad. They had nine possessions. They scored one touchdown. They had three turnovers. They had four puns and they had one field goal. And that even that field goal was because you got the penalty on the, on the punt where you get another chance there on fourth down. So yeah, I don't, you know, obviously we're not going to go completely crazy and overreact here. But I think the story coming out of this game is definitely going to be Drake May and that Patriots offense looking bad. Once again, the first time we see them after that Super Bowl loss. All right, Deontay, what do you Give us another winner or winner.
loser? What do you have? I will go, I will go back to a point I made when you first asked me about my impressions of Drake May and my loser is going to be Josh McDaniel, right? Like I'm again, trying to figure out what the Patriots to offense is doing to make life easier on the 11 players on the field, right? I think going into the Super Bowl last year, we kind of made the point when we're previewing the game out in San Francisco that New England was very first down on run game heavy, right? And it was ineffective last postseason. Houston absolutely mashed him in between the tackles on those early down runs. Obviously Seattle did the same and forced him into these second and longs. And tonight 16 first down runs for 49 yards. You're talking about three yards apart. Why? Why are you running the football until maybe the best front seven, best run seven in the league, right? You can't explain it and the data would suggest that those are all bad play calls. And this is a defense that you can't afford to just be burning up the most valuable down in distance outside of third and whatever it is you're going to be dealing with. First and 10 is just way too valuable against a defense like this for you to play so conservatively. And I think that putting themselves behind the chains, putting themselves in more obvious passing situations allows Mike McDonald to do exactly what he did in the Super Bowl, which is now since you got to go spread to pass the ball to move the chains, they can start sending pressure from a million different directions. And I feel for Drake May in a lot of these situations because he's dropping back and it looks like there's 13 players on the field, you know, with how quickly there's pressure, you know, unblocked pressure, getting to them, you know, and even when they were sending four, their interior lineman was still kind of struggling. I think Elijah Veritecker will ultimately be an upgrade. I think the Jared Wilson will ultimately be an upgrade for them, right? But I still, you still watch this game and walk away feeling like they can't control the ball, they can't control the game in between the tackles. And now Drake May has to be a superhero. And we are now on game, whatever it is. Like I said, three or four of your young quarterback, maybe showing you that he doesn't need to be playing that way at all times in high leverage situations. I don't know if we walked away. And while I'm not going to catastrophize coming out of week one, I don't know if we walked away from this game feeling like, Hey, Josh McDaniel's went, grinded the tape, saw the same opponent. He saw that just pants them before and he's got better answers. And these better answers are going to catapult them into, you know, a much an even better or more balanced or more complete offensive production in 2026. So I am a little concerned. I wrote down the same word, Billy Pants, you know, I feel like I want to start using that more in my podcasting because that's exactly what happened in the Super Bowl. He got pants and it felt like no one talked about it. It was all about Drake May and Bill Campbell and the talent. But it felt like throughout the playoffs, that's what was happening. And it was like, wait, Josh McDaniel's is he giving them an edge anywhere here? And I felt the same way Deontay did where they're just running it first down, second down, and towards the end of the game. All right. Remundress Stevenson was, was picking up a couple of first downs. But for like three quarters, they were just wasting those first and second downs. They were running the football. They weren't getting anything going down field. I know that's how the Seahawks want to play and they want to limit you when doing that. But they didn't have a single completion over 20 yards. It was just that plea flicker with the pass interference. So yeah, I think Josh McDaniel's, if you're saying, man, he, you know, he had a press conference, I think last week, where he was just like, put it all on me, you know, the Super Bowl performance. I didn't do a good enough job. You had all off season and you scored one touchdown, Billy. I mean, Josh McDaniel's got to be taken some heat here. Well, Drake made was the leading Russia for most of the game. Yeah, he was saving him. Right. He really was. That's not the word I wrote down, though. The word I wrote down that I was excited about catastrophize. That's a good word today. It's a great word. Yeah. Depends on the audience. Pants. Kit chats catastrophize both very good. Yeah. I have a winner. I feel like I know my winner. I feel like that's a show of the different ends of the millennial spectrum. Yeah, go ahead, Billy. You got a winner for us. What do you got? The X-ray machine. Yeah, X-ray machine got two high profile visitors tonight. They got a visit from Sam Darnold and AJ Brown. And we were saying the story of the game was going to be the pages. But the story of the game might be the results of those X-rays because Sam Darnold had to leave and get more tests off site, which is never great. And AJ Brown was still kind of waiting. I saw a poor city left in a boot. So we're kind of just in wait and see mode right now with these injuries. Yeah. I mean, that of five snaps and for one of my winners, if the Patriots one was going to be like the Patriots voodoo because I'm like last year, they just got to play backup quarterbacks and literally half their wins. And then five snaps into the season. Sam Darnold leaves the game. And it just got progressively worse. First they show the clip. He's like, oh, he's lipid a little bit getting off the field. And it's like, no, he's going to go to the blue tent. And it's like, no, he's going to locker room. And then it went from like, it's an ankle now. It might be a leg hip. And it's like hip. And then they're just like, he's out of the game. And I'm like, what? Sam Darnold is out of the game. Which I mean, Tianti, that's got a sock. You got to do the whole old training camp. You know, you're just waiting to get back out there. And then you get to play five snaps and you're out of the game. So the report I saw was that Adam Schefter said, Darnold has been at Harborview Medical Center. Wow, a little pop for Harborview Medical Center. Shout out to Harborview. Yeah, in a big spot. So undergoing a CT scan on his hip, initial test was encouraging, but inconclusive and Darnold now is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Thursday, Dianti. So hopefully we get some good news on Sam Darnold. Can I ask you guys a question real quick? And I'm wondering if you experience just the same way that I experienced this. I feel really bad for the people that were at Harborview waiting to get a CT scan who have been there. They got admitted to the ER. Have been waiting hours. No one is seeing them. Then Sam Darnold just rolls right in and gets CT scan immediately. Rolls right out has the results immediately. We're like the normal person that like fell down. They hurt their back, whatever. They're waiting their hour upon hour upon hour. Then they have to meet a specialist in two months. Then they schedule them for surgery and surgery is six weeks after that. Then they have like 24 months of recovery where Sam Darnold has his results tonight. If he has to have surgery, he's going to be scheduled by Tuesday. He's going to be in and out with the best doctor in America. And then he's going to be all healed up and he's going to be playing like four weeks from now. I don't like what's going on in the special treatment. These football players get shield Dianti. I love where Billy is at, right? We start off the podcast with, you know, this advocacy for physical media, not scanning. This guy's when we're getting it uploaded to a to a spreadsheet that he can look at online and in the public screen, you can see American healthcare system. I like where we had a corner finger in a toe shell. Yeah. I think maybe we break out a little social of Billy commenting on the American healthcare system. I think maybe that's going to do some numbers, Billy. And you can't do it to me this time because normally you say that I'm with like the big I'm with the man and I'm against a little person. Today, I'm going against the healthcare system. You can't get me to see you can't put him in a body out here trying to make sure that he lives through the midter time to survive through the midterms here. Yeah. See what's going on. You know, one day he's supporting billionaire owners, but the next day he's kind of criticizing the healthcare system. So you don't know what's not people are complicated. You know, there are different. Billy contains multitudes. He contains multitudes. All right. Let's take a break. We come back. I want to get to the other injury you mentioned there because you did mention AJ Brown. We'll get to that injury. We'll get to more winners and losers from the NFL opener. We are back here on the ringer NFL show. This segment is sponsored by or game Deonte big debut for AJ Brown. They make the big trade in the off season. He draws the defensive pass interference penalty, but then third quarter goes down ankle injury does not return. And I think what was so glaring is that he kind of saw how much this Patriots offense is really going to need him this year. And how he was really slated to be a high volume guy. So that's another one. We got to await some, uh, await some updates on AJ Brown's injury. I'm looking here at a tweet from Andrew Callahan right at the Boston Herald. And I think that his update is that he left the locker room wearing a boot, right? I'm sure, I mean, as we record this, I'm sure that Mike Brebel, if he isn't already out of the blue.
the podium is preparing to go to a podium. So I guess we'll wait and see if he gave a no comment. - He gave a no up to not surprise by that. - Not surprise by that, not surprise by that. But I would say I'm saying. - All these things that he's holding a puffy or a child. - I mean, the implication alone, just wearing a boot, walking out of the locker room for AJ Brown is probably not the greatest sign and the fact that he didn't come back to the sidelines after going into the locker room. Also, probably a bit of a concern, right? I think that for him, right? - You can't talk, I mean, you want to talk about frustrating. We mentioned that with Darnell, but for him, I can't imagine somebody who walked in a week, going feeling like there was more of an opportunity to prove who he still is as a receiver. This is a team as you've noted shield that absolutely needs his skill set, being able to catch the ball on the move underneath and shake tacklers off or push the ball vertically and beat one-on-one coverage. And maybe the third quarter goes a little bit differently. If on that, you know, play action pass that I was talking about where you get the interception thrown, you're targeting number one, right? That might go a little bit differently for the Patriots offense. And if not, even if you're not feeding him the ball, maybe his gravity alone, right? As a vertical stretcher, as somebody who you can't just leave consistently, a one-on-one coverage might have opened some things up. I am a little concerned still about just like, what is the next layer going to be for this offense? Clearly, they don't have the most in Van Aver, the most explosive run game. Drake May has now shown this pinching for a turn in the ball over, right? And this is something that's kind of dog dim throughout his professional career. We just happen to get that flashpoint last season where he really wasn't throwing any interceptions while he was getting all those explosive plays. Maybe we're seeing a little bit of regression and have been, I guess, since the winner in last post season. And now that you don't have what's supposed to be your number one man-beater, put the ball out on one-on-one coverage in third downs and you're gonna move the chains with this guy or get a pass or interference. If he misses significant amount of time, we're gonna have real questions, I think, about how viable this offense is or if it's only going to work if Drake May is being a superhero again. - Yeah, it kind of reverts to last year's version, really. If A.J. Brown is out for a significant amount of time. So hopefully that's not the case, but we'll get an update on A.J. Brown. All right, I've got to win. So I'm sure C.Ox fans right now are like, "Hey, we won the game. You're ripping Drake Bay, you know, you're complimenting the X-ray machine, you're commenting on the American healthcare system. What about us?" Mike McDonald, I'm a man. Just every, that's a culture win right there. You're down 10-nothing. Your backup quarterback goes into the game, five snaps in. You have a new offensive coordinator and you come back and you win the football game. 13 to 10. So I've given the staff before. They had a buy in week 10 of Mike McDonald's first season. Since that buy, they are 24 and five and they've only lost by more than four points one time. I just continue to be so impressed by the job he does. Not only, you know, you can talk about the defensive schemes and how I said before, I feel like you would give him pretty much any roster in the NFL and I would feel good about them having a very good defense. But just on top of that, you can kind of see it just in the way they play in a game where they just are getting all these penalties and you're like, oh, this doesn't look very crisp. They somehow, you look up in the second half and you're like, wait, they actually have a chance to steal this one and they score 13 unanswered points for. So yeah, Billy, Mike McDonald has to be a big winner from this game. The only series that they looked bad once they got rolling was when they had the second and one in the four yard line and then they had, you know, the delay of game. But that, you know, that was not McDonald. That was a lot of time. That sort of felt like the play call was getting in late and also Drew Locke was like, I'm the backup. I don't like, I'm not messing this up. I need to look at my wristband for a while here. But yeah, that's what it felt like it was happening, right? Dianne, on that stretch. Absolutely. I think, you know, we saw a lot of those late snaps and you can see him peeking at the wristband. Peek at the wristband again. Look at it one more time. Okay, where is Jackson Smith and Jigbat? 'Cause I want to make sure I'm throwing the ball and I'm throwing the ball to him. Are we set it up for the right run here, right? I definitely think, you know, clearly a backup quarterback that was not thinking that week one, you know, before we even get 10 minutes into the game, 10 minutes into the first quarter that he is now going to have to strap up the chin strap and be out there running the offense. But I want to come back to your point about Mike McDonald 'cause I've just really been thinking since about, you know, after that first interception from Drake May, what it kind of kind of became clear that Seattle was able to get themselves back in this game and then close it out. I was just thinking about when the last time was that we had a defensive-minded head coach that came into the league and just very instantly as a head coach gave you proof of concept the way that Mike McDonald has. And I think maybe the closest corollary might be like Jimmy Johnson back in the '90s, right, with Dallas and even then there was a rocky start, right? You go one at 15 in '89 and when you take the gig, you're not really a playoff team in year two and then after that, obviously, you really kind of get them to take off in '90 from '91, '93, you get those championships. But outside of that, I can't think of the last defensive-minded head coach who was able to go step into a job instantly and say give me these vets that other teams are kind of casting away, give me these young guys that have these kind of wonky skill sets, people who don't necessarily fit, you know, cleanly into one role or the other and I will craft the best defense and football and give me Sam Donald, this very flawed quarterback and give me Clint Kubiak, you know, last year and now Brian Florey, these guys who aren't the highest profile coordinators, it just watched me work and it is 100% paid off in his time as a head coach and the fact that he is dominated. So many offensive-minded guys that have either been heralded before or are very well respected now, I think it just speaks volumes to how well-prepared he and his teams have been coming into these games. - Yeah, it's well said, I'm just looking at like a list of coaches now and it's hard to find a similar guy, like Sean McDermott comes up when you look at the win-loss percentage, but they weren't winning games because his defense was cooking, they were winning games because they had Josh Allen, honestly, D'Amico Ryan's might be like in a si-- - Maybe the next closest, yeah. - Category and next closest, but it has been a while since a guy has come in and performed like he has just as a defensive play caller, like you mentioned and just building that dominant defense and being so good right off the bat. All right, Billy, what do you got? You got another winner or loser for us? - Yeah, I got a winner, I was looking to see what quarterbacks were available, I was just curious. Not winners or losers, this is just my distraction. Seeing like, what do we do out here? Like, who do we get if Sam Darnold is actually injured? 'Cause I mean, I don't think Drew Locke realistically is a plan for the season. So if this is gonna be a long-term thing, what do they do? Never know, Jimmy Garoppolo maybe. I'll keep looking for you guys. So winners and losers, you know, here's a loser. And this is, you might think, how is this related to the game exactly? - Okay. Los Angeles Rams, big losers tonight. - Los Angeles Rams, big loser. - All right, give me a listen, what do you got? - Well, because, you know, it's gonna be a back and forth for them to win the division. And you and I, when we did the predictions last week, we had different, you had the Rams, I had the Seahawks and it's gonna come down to a game or two one way or another. And this is a game that the Seahawks should have lost with the way that they was playing out. Like, this is a game, the Patriot should have won. Seahawks should have lost. The Rams would have been in good shape. They would have been a game up. Now they played tomorrow. I don't know if you saw the pictures that I'm coming off that plane. They looked tired as hell coming off that plane. - I didn't see it. Are they there? - Are they in Australia now? - They got to Australia today. They got in, I believe, what they said was 70M local time and for them to stick to the plan of staying on time, they'd have to go to bed between three and five PM Australian time. So they got in at seven, they'd have to go to bed for the night three to five PM. And then I think they'd be up anywhere between midnight and two AM to get ready for the game. So this plan of theirs, while on paper and while the scientists said this was a good idea, this is, I saw them get off the plane and I gotta tell you, McVeigh looked like a man who was regretting the decision when you saw him getting off that plane 'cause that's a long flight. And it's not the same, but I've done that a couple times going to California where it's like, you know what, I'm gonna go in, I'm gonna do my thing that I have to do that day. I'll go back the next day. My body's not gonna use to it. I'll just be up at three AM. I'll go through whatever it'll be fine. And by like midday, that second day, you're like dragging. And by the third day, you're just waiting to get home and you're like, you're dead tired. So I'm a little bit concerned about this plan. - All right, so they have to stay up for eight hours. So they land at seven AM and they need to go to bed around three PM. So they have to stay up for eight hours, but then they can get a full night lease. - A night, a night, a blackout, shades, or are you guys white noise guys when you sleep? - No. - Do you do that? - No, no. - Are you up to, oh, you don't do TV. I don't do white noise. - You're heading for it. - What do you, do you just lie down and like, do you close your eyes and you just fall asleep right away? - Vampire style, baby. That's a big thing. - Exactly right, okay. - And that works for you? - It hasn't failed me yet. - Can you sleep on a plane? - Yeah, actually I sleep most of the time on a plane. - Oh, I'm so jealous. (laughing) - I can't do even those. - He's got the dad's go. This is a dad's go. - Exactly. - You're just able to sleep wherever. Like my dad was once, I think it was Lego land. I would actually probably buy Deonte and we just looked over and he was asleep on a bench. - Oh, sorry. I don't know that you were sleeping that deeply. - Yeah, he was doing that. That was several years ago. But I do do the white noise, Billy. And if you have any sleep issues, 'cause we started.
doing this when the kids were little, you know, you do the white noise for them. And then you would be like a hotel and you're sleeping there with the kids. So you're like putting the white noise on and then we just got addicted to the white noise. So we got the white noise, we travel with it and we play it wherever we are because it's sometimes if you're at a hotel now and it's like, all right, people are being noisy around a whatever, you got the white noise that blocks it out. So I would imagine rams, I would say blackout shades, white noise. I don't know what else they might be doing here to try to get to sleep there. I saw that they had to send the stuff like their essential stuff. They had to send it like in a boat in like crates months ago for it to get to Australia in time. And then for their actual equipment of the games, yeah, I think they shipped it over there months ago for it to get their like essential stuff. And then I was reading that like their cleats and stuff like that had to be like deep clean because of, you know, customs or whatever. You can't transport soil into the country. So they had to remove all of the dirt and everything off of the shoes because it had to go through customs. All of the 80 like crates that they sent over there with stuff had to go through like deep screening. Listen, I understand and Tom sold us on this. This is great. Expansion for the league. You're going to go out there flag football Olympics, all of that stuff that he told us, but man, this seems like a lot of effort for one game, like a lot of effort. I like how anti this you are. I don't know how to tie it. No, no, no, you're doing this. No, I don't think you should back down. You're giving very valid reasons for why are they actually doing this because a flag football, like, is that a good enough reason in the Olympics in 20, 30, whatever. Yeah, whatever. I don't know. It's a long time. Like what? And also Shanahan would say, we all, you know, who knows we might not all be around for those. Well, I mean, come on, Sheila, you got a car. That's what you're saying. Cheese, please. Okay. All right. I had. So that's why you have the Rams as a loser. Yeah. Well, because they could have taken it. They could have taken it. They could have taken an advantage here. They could have taken a leap or at the very worst case scenario if they lose tomorrow because this sleep pattern didn't work out. They could have just remained tied at O and one each. But now, you know, who knows if they lose their game back. Okay. There you go. All right. Dianne, tell you got a winner or a loser for us. I got some more if you don't have any. I've got a combo winner here because I don't want to separate either of them in this. My winner here is Brian Florey's run game calls and jadarian prices performance today. Right. Average like five yards of pop on those first and second down runs. You know, I think did the third down runs. We're just trying to get the ball across the chains and ended up kind of being an anchor on his average on the day. But if you just, you know, if you're able to, you know, control for early down runs, think you want 10 for 49, right? So you're talking to our 10 for 48, something of that effect. So a very effective day for him on the ground. I thought that Brian Florey, you know, for somebody who also did not expect to be called a place for his backup quarterback actually seemed to change gears pretty well. He was still able to feed the ball to Jackson Smith and Jigba in spite of the fact that he didn't have his starting quarterback. So you have a guy in here who doesn't have much rhythm. You know, who wouldn't have much rhythm coming out of training camp with your number one receiver, certainly not as much as your starting quarterback. And you were still able to manufacture those touches. And then Jackson Smith and Jigba was able to get loose, right? Which is really the whole point of their, their approach to the passing game is if we just spam these calls to our best receiver, he's such a good route runner and he's proving himself to be so good after the catch. He'll probably pop on for a big, for a big gain. So I want to give a lot of credit to Brian Florey. And then from an individual basis, I think that what Jadarian price showed on the ground, if he's able to consistently deliver that, whether Donald's hurt or not, that is going to be such a good home base, I think, for this offense. If they can count on getting four to five yards of pop on those early down runs. For sure. Good start for price. And I'm with you on Florey. It was like, if you look at the numbers, like he had 13 first downs, let's not, you know, the CX said 13 first down. Let's not go overboard. But if you watch the game, it's like you lose your quarterback that fourth and one call to JSN was terrific. He scores the touchdown. I thought he started to find a rhythm a little bit in the second half, whereas early on, it was like, I don't know if Drew Locke is going to be completing a lot of passes, but then they found some self that worked there. Philly, I have an important question for you. Did you see, did you see Brian Florey, like what he looks like on the sideline there tonight? If not to a quick Google search there. Okay. I'm going to say yes, but well, because this is, this is important. He has a look at the defense coordinator. That's what I'm saying. Yeah. Yeah. He doesn't look like an offensive coordinator. He's bald. He's got a nice beard going on. Got a great. That's a D line coach, man. I'm not believing it. Yeah. Does that concern you, Billy, that this is what the offensive coordinator looks like they're supposed to have, you know, the nice, whatever, the nice hair and the like Daniel, like this, you know, the flash. The shoes and the tags. I don't know. The capri pants, basically the sunglasses. I don't think so. Okay. He can break the mold and be okay. Yeah. Why not? What? This is chill. This is 2026. We're going to come out here and just be judging people on their looks. Like, what are we doing right now? Okay. Is this a lot that you want to be doing? Well, yes. Okay. All right. So Billy says it's okay, but the update does agree with me for the record. I wonder if this is like a Titan's coach thing, right? You know, maybe that's it because Dan Campbell, another, yeah, I don't know if that whole like are you, are you a cop or are you a coach type of look, you know, type of thing that Titan's coach has seen that I'm going on. Maybe that's maybe that's just what it is. So I was watching it on mute because it's late here. And I didn't want to wake up my children. So I had the game on mute and they kept showing him. And I just assumed he was a defensive coach to your point. See? You were judging him too. Yeah. Well, you know, just me. Okay. Let me see. Well, all right. This is a loop. This honestly could have been one of our first losers that I've got Romeo Dodgs. Oh, he was my next loser. Yeah. I'm sorry. Yeah. Go ahead. Go ahead. Go ahead. No, no, no, go with the chill. Well, not only Romeo Dodgs, but I don't know. Did Romeo Dodgs get drafted in your fantasy leagues? I can't, I can't remember if he got taken. Probably not, but that was tough for Romeo Dodgs. So first of all, you know, at half time, I'm checking out what people are saying online and someone tweeted that he had only actually played 12 out of 32 snaps in the first half. And I'm like, yeah, it actually didn't seem like he was really out there. Romeo Dodgs, that's weird. And then you have the third quarter where they're like, all right, Drake Bay, just throwing one up there for Romeo Dodgs. And that gets intercepted. And then the deonties point that drop. I mean, that was like when a Drake May's best plays in the game, puts it right in his hands could have been a big play. And he drops the football. So I think May targeting him. Oh, for three with an interception. So he does not have a catch. And this is a game again, where AJ Brown went down. That's tough. That is a tough start there for Romeo. Kind of kind of an indictment of Drake May is targeting Mac Holland's on key downs in a second half, you know, the kind of. And not blaming him. You don't blame him when you're watching him. Like, oh, yeah, Mac Holland's looks like he's getting open. That was his guy in the Super Bowl last year, though, too, you know, like when he was struggling in the Super Bowl, Mac Holland's is there for him. I mean, I'm not going to act like Keishan Bouti is like some future all pro, but you did give away Keishan Bouti because you're assuming that Romeo Dodgs is going to be a certain kind of receiver for you. And again, right, we're not going to, as Billy, you know, Billy can go like to work a testifies, right? But we're not going to get testifies here on the wide receiver situation, even though it does seem a little dire without AJ Brown, especially if he has to miss a bunch of time. But yeah, in terms of just like week one impressions, I don't want to see the wide receiver that you spent money to go bring in not being on the field for more than half of your passing plays and not being targeted like a guy that you just invested in, it was willing to clear out other talent that you had in the wide receiver room to be able to make space for. It's just just not, not the right kind of tasting your mouth coming out of week one. It's weird. You signed into a big contract. You would assume you had a plan for him. Again, you had all off season. You've been working on this game plan for a while. And it was just like, other, you know, I guess they had three, three times they actually targeted him. But yes, very, very tough start there for Romeo Dodgs. All right, Billy, I stole yours. Do you have another one for us? No, that's fine. And we're about it. Here's a winner. Cooper Cup. Cooper Cup had the catch. The game wouldn't catch. And then he had a touchdown. They got taken away from him because of an illegal shift before and was like, come on. That didn't really affect the play. That was perfectly fine. I did. Cooper should have had a touchdown. But I feel like a couple years ago, Cooper was just discarded. We assumed like, okay, this guy's going to kind of bounce around. He's not really going to be a contributor. Windsor Super Bowl last year. He's still very serviceable. He's there when you need him. Cooper Cup. I want to give him a winner for today. It was a huge catch. I mean, it was their biggest, biggest place in the game. You know, it drew locks. Just like he's down there somewhere. I'm going to throw it up. And you didn't know. Can Cooper Cup still make that play? He could. He had the other play in the middle of the field where he comes back to the ball, avoids a defender. So Deontan, I mean, I know Billy's not sub tweeting me. But I was kind of like, when his career ended with the Rams, I was kind of like, that's probably, Deontan, I will admit that I thought it was over. Everyone did too. Yeah, especially me when wide receivers in corners, when their age starts with a three, I'm usually like, all right, it's going downhill here in a hurry. But Deontan, he looked good tonight as a number two option. I mean, you know, it's one of those things where after you get so you need to see a guy in a certain jersey, you go see him in, you know, especially a rival's jersey. You're like, I've seen this story before. This usually ends with the wide receiver being cooked, but the fact that he's still able to be productive, right? able to go mate, you know, those acrobatic catch a lot.
along the sideline, right, early in the game. That was a huge play for Seattle's offense. I think that that, you know, that's a great sign for them. I still want to see Rashid Shaheed get more involved. Maybe that's something that would have happened. - Oh, yeah. - If you haven't started quarterbacking. - You know, like I still just feel like they have not really carved out as much opportunity for him within the flow of the offense as they showed. But yeah, I think that I think if Cooper Cup can give you, that's kind of production. God, this got to make you feel good. Especially with all the things that we've mentioned in terms of the run game, and the fact that you're still able to feed J.S. in, basically on demand. I think this offense might have another one of those underrated, you know, they might not be top five in EPA or DVOA. But I think this offense is maybe showing that even in a game that was kind of herky jerky because of the loss of Darnold, and you know, they weren't able to convert a bunch in the first half. They can maybe keep themselves afloat in ways that I had questions as to whether or not they'd be able to this year. - Yeah, guys made a place, there's no doubt about it. All right, let's take one more break. We come back. We finish up with some more winners and losers from this game. - Imagine setting your makeup, then forgetting it's even theirs. Meet new grippy setting mist from Maybelline, New York. Gel to mist technology locks in your look for up to 24 hours with flexible all day comfy grip. No tightness, no stickiness, no residue. Just plum, dewey hydrated skin that still feels like your skin. Try new grippy setting mist from Maybelline, New York. - Maybe it's Maybelline. - All right, we are back here on the ringer NFL show. Now I know Billy was watching on mute. I don't know if he was watching on mute the whole night. Dianne, I don't know about you. So I might be on an island here, and I'm not trying to be mean. - I got you, because I think. - I got you scared as a loser here. And here's the reason, you know. My kids, if trying to tell me educate me a little bit on aura, am I saying that right? Aura, right? Aura loss? Is that me? I don't know, is that me? Okay, I'm telling you. Yeah, I'm nailing it, right? So being on a set there with Mike Tomlin, that feels like an aura loss for Jason Garrick. - Are you familiar with the mocking? - Yes, yes, I think you're right. That probably would have been better. But it's like, they're having conversations. And it's kind of like Jason Garrick's off to the side. Like, wait, is he supposed to be here or not? And when Mike Tomlin says something, and then Jason Garrick says something, it's like, I'm putting like very different stock into what these two men are telling me about the game of football. So I feel like this is tough, Billy. I know you had your hand up over there. I feel like this is tough for Jason Garrick. - Well, you mentioned Mike Tomlin. I was wondering if you guys had grades for his debut today for, you know, football night in America with Sunday night football, whatever you would call. I mean, Wednesday night football in America. Whatever today would be called. What grades would you give Mike Tomlin? Because the halftime interview that I saw with him was kind of like, Mike, you said a lot of nothing here. You know what I mean? He didn't give us a ton. Which, by the way, was his MO in post game press conferences. He said a lot of nothing, or he just said a lot of crazy things about not blinking, cutting your eyelids off. Like, I love him for the stuff that he said. I was wondering how he would do. And then they also showed us his sit down with John Harba. And the clip that they showed us was like, the biggest nothing burger. I was like, can you believe we're sitting here? It's like, no. And it's like, see more of that this week. If that's the best clip, Billy, that's not a good sign. If that was the T's clip, I have concerns about that interview. - So because part of my night was on mute, would you guys, what grades would you give him I guess pregame or whatever else? I may have missed of him. - I just thought this was a tough day for NBC's broadcasts in general, honestly. I didn't, I don't know if I love Chris Collins or today. No, I mean, Mike Tariqo is Mike Tariqo. And you know, they're pregame. And maybe this is just a Mike and Jason thing 'cause they do just kind of offer up nothing burgers, right? But you're sitting there watching. And I'm like, as they're cutting a commercial break, if I was just a casual fan, what exactly did I just take from these conversations that I just witnessed? I don't know if I got any smarter about the game for ball, I don't know if I heard anything captivated, you know, on the set either, right? And clearly these are not personalities. They're gonna give you that inside the NBA back when they were on TNT, sort of whimsy or jokes, you know, either. So if I'm not learning anything and I'm not getting, you know, these, these very cool kind of former coach anecdotes, we're all just sitting around and saying, hey, they got to control the mind of Skirmic. They got to convert on third down. Thanks, you know, awesome. - It really, it did feel a lot like that. I thought the in-game broadcast was fine. I thought it was, you know, kind of class at you. I feel comfort sometimes. It's like, all right, Tureko and Collinsworth, I know what I'm getting from these two. Collinsworth had the nice call on the JSN touchdown where he pointed that out right before. So yeah, that I didn't have an issue with. Tom, when I was just, I would say, okay, I wasn't watching it going. I can't stand this. This guy's annoying me, get him off my TV. I wasn't going, oh my gosh. Now I see why every network wanted to bring in Mike Tomlin, but you are right, Billy. He had one of those today where he said something about, you know, can they deliver the baby? Which is, was his date? And you were kind of like, hey, what is he talking about? Delivering, you know, delivering a baby. Oh, okay, he's just talking about like, can they sack, drink, mate, what the comparison was? You know, he did a podcast a while ago, the pivot podcast with Ryan Clark, and I think Fred Channing Crowder. Yes. And I thought he was awesome on that. Like when, because when he got the broadcasting job, a lot of people were saying what you said. Like wait, this guy everyone as I hope is for, like his press conferences are terrible. But he was like, he was loose in that setting. He was telling great stories. He was giving his coaching, like I thought what he was talking about in that interview, about just like the philosophy of what it means to be a coach. And it sounds a little hokey, but I'm like, this is like the best explanation I've ever heard for what like the actual job is for an NFL coach. So I had some higher hopes for him. I think that's the side they need to bring out. Like it's less of just like, what are the keys to the game? I don't know that that's gonna be that entertaining. But if he can, like you said, tell me, how many stories must this guy have? I mean, think of how much time he spent in the NFL. Just do like, let's have Mike, you know, Mike Tomlin's story time, you know, and just give us something. Well, he also coached what was a circus and kept it completely under control when Antonio Brown was running around there too. And like we had no idea that Antonio Brown was a crazy person until he left Pittsburgh. So what else did he take care of that we just didn't know 'cause he's just like very much a coach like, this stays in house, we're a family, all of that stuff. - Yeah, there's gotta be something. So I wanna see more, let's give him some, give him some, give him some more time. Let's see how it goes for Mike Tomlin. All right, Giante, you got anything else for us? Any winners or losers before we close this out? - I think that, I think I covered all my guys. - Okay. - I mean, it's not like this was a high flying game. - No, it wasn't, yeah, we definitely hit all the big stuff. But just in case Billy, you got anything else for us? Winners or losers? - Just a quick winner, we mentioned him a moment ago, but we haven't really talked that much about him. Jay said, I mean, 120 yards on A receptions, a touchdown, you had that little, basically a scream pass that he turned into basically a 40 yard touch. - That was awesome. - I think he's just so good that, and the game wasn't great that we just are kinda like, hey, he's just kinda doing what he does. - I didn't realize he had a 120 yards, honestly, until you said that. I would have guessed, you know, 78 or something like that. - Yeah, I mean, most of it was on that one play, but still, he's just so good that we almost take him for granted that like he puts up performance like that. And it's like, yeah, it just seemed like an average game from him, no big deal. - Yeah, yeah, I mean, that play. Swung the entire game, that fourth and one to Jay ascent. So he is incredible. He actually had a chance for another touchdown, Drew Lock kind of overthrew him on the one there, left corner of the end zone, or he could have had an even bigger game. We're after that one, I'm like, oh, is Jay ascent gonna be kind of frustrated, but it's quarter pass play, but they ended up getting the ball in the ball. So he was fine there. All right, let me look at my list. I mean, is Mike Frabel a loser here? If you're a great coach, would you be blowing a 10, nothing lead on the, you know, to Drew Lock? I don't know, am I being mean? - Who do we blame the loss on? I, you know, we could give credit to the ball on whatever. - Yeah, I thought Drake Bay. - It's Drake Bay. - It's Drake Bay. - It's Drake Bay. - All right. All right, I'm just saying. - You don't three picks, you don't three picks in one quarter, the game kind of falls like it's yours. - What is their schedule look like? 'Cause there are things about to get like really rough for Drake Bay here, 'cause this is not good. - I think they play a pretty healthy amount of teams that need to play off last year. - So they play Pittsburgh next, and then they're at Jacksonville, and it's Buffalo. Yeah, but then they are. - Cooling. - Then they are. - That's not easy. - That's not easy. - And just, I mean, by the time you get to that rater's jet stretch, it thinks, if things go sideways, if AJ Brown misses time and this offense sputters, outside of Pittsburgh, you're gonna be dealing with teams who we have high expectations for their offense. So I do have some questions about what New England is gonna look like, getting out of September. - Yeah, that's tough. They could be one and three going into that game now. This was a three-point game. It's not like they got blown out. They could bounce back easily and still be a very good team. But yeah, that's not an easy stretch. And even Pittsburgh, like Pittsburgh's front is gonna be quite challenging for them. I think blocking those guys with the Steelers, 'cause I think their defense is gonna be pretty good. All right, I'm looking through my list here. I mean the sea oxygen says so.
so many defensive players, like the lesser known Seahawks defensive backs who maybe, you know, were not household names, like me, am I a pritchett? It's just like they lose Rick Woolen and free agency and this guy's making a terrific interception. Like Josh Job, anyone could have had this guy a couple years ago, practice squad guy, man, practice squad guy plays great for them last year. They're like, hey, let's just sign him instead of Rick Woolen, he'll be cheaper. That interception, because the thing about that interception, we probably didn't give this enough promise. Like, if that's just a pass break up or he makes the cash, but one foot's out of bounds, the game's going over time and then you have a 50-50 percent chance to lose the game. So the fact that he's a defensive back who can make that play, that acrobatic play still get his feet in bounds, that was a huge play. I mean, obviously a huge play, but an impressive play I should say. Do you have any thoughts on the Rams doing this travel 28 hours before the game versus the Niners staying there for a week, because Billy and I can't get enough about talking about this. Or just general thoughts towards the Netflix game preview from D.I. I mean, I think the science, I've listened to enough, you know, professors, scholars in sleep science experts that I feel like the logic of it is sound, right? Like I've heard the argument made enough times where the logic of it is sound. I think that there's just this gap in my little lion becker brain, where all I think about is more days in different environment means more opportunity to get your body acclimated, right? But I do think if you're the Rams, and you can't say this right now because you still have to go try to win the game, but if you're Sean McVeigh, no matter what happens on the Thursday night game between the 49ers and the Rams and you get to the podium after, you're going to say, we set up this travel this way because we did not want to be tanked in week two and week three by having to be an Australia for an extended amount of time and then have to try to get our bodies re-acclimated to being in Los Angeles or wherever else were to travel from here. That to me is what makes the most sense for this kind of travel plan. It is less about maximizing the 24 hours you're going to spend in Melbourne and a lot more about once we get back to California, can we get back to being a normal team on a normal schedule and not have to modify week two or week threes plans just to give our guys a chance to catch up on their sleep and recover properly. They're taking the long view. So Billy, if that was the team you rooted for, like let's say the Rams lose this game and then McVeigh is like, listen, there are different ways to do it. We listen to our sports science staff. We're taking the long view. It's a long season. It's 18 weeks. So do you want these guys to be as healthy as possible? That's why we did it. Are you like, okay, I understand that or are you like, man, you overthought it? I wish you would have just gone there earlier and tried to win this game. I mean, if it's my team, I am not understanding of any reasons when my team loses. I don't care what sports scientists are. There's a lot of them. The long play, like I'm the guy that, you know, when my baseball team has someone pitching a no-hitter, have them throw 250 pitches. I don't care about their arm in their career long term, like I want to see a no-hitter. So I don't like long view. They play the giants. And you need to all this extra rest to play the giants, like get out of here. You're going to be perfectly fine. The thing about the science that I, I mean, obviously it's accounted for, but like that I can't, but also because I'm dumb, is there's also like, you're on a plane for 18 hours. So yeah, you could be sticking to the same block, but being on a plane for 18 hours is not great for your body. Yeah. Like that's an exhausting day that you have beforehand. You could still be on the same mental clock, but like your body's tired. You know what I was just thinking? And I'm glad we're deep into the podcast for this. And I don't know if your family's discussed this as much as, you know, my family, but we're very comfortable talking about gut health, you know, are you regular or you're regular, you know, travel can do a number on that. And I'm wondering, you know, like are the nine years now acclimated and they're good? Or are they like, man, this is terrible. This has been a week of this because the ramps, I can't imagine that's going to be good for kind of the, you know what I'm talking about, Philly here. Didn't you tell us once that you had an uncle that came here from abroad and didn't go to the bath in the entire time or something? That's right. Mookun, uncle. Yeah. Yeah. You know, he was, yeah, he, and he was very upset. He almost flew back to India because he was constipated. It was like they had to be a whole, Deonte, they had to be the whole family meeting of how can we get this guy get some things moving there? He was so upset. Well, I don't think I'm like that. That's like something. Right. I am, I am 100 percent, I am loving just the idea that Matthew Stafford can't escape a third down pressure because he didn't get his morning open. Listen, and I can speak because he's a little older. I can speak to when you're a little bit older and that's the, it affects you a little bit more. You know, it's not like you're in your 20s and you're not thinking about it. So I do think it could have a shame too because Australia obviously famously has a toilet to spin the other way around. So you know, you'd want to take advantage of, yeah, because they're on a different hemisphere. So instead of, you know, it's flushing clockwise or whatever they flush counterclockwise. You never heard this, you know, no, I don't know anything about what you're talking about. Yeah. You don't know about this, either. I'm totally unaware. Oh my gosh. All right. Well, they do have the good coffee in Australia, so maybe that'll help them a little bit. I think it's moving, but listen, any enterprising journalist out there. If you tackle this angle of the story, I can guarantee you a shout out on a future ringer NFL show. I don't, I mean, you have the guy that could have asked them about this because he's doing the game. And he's assigned to that. We're just getting to know him, Billy, you know, Tom, I can't be asking him to go report on the constipation situation. Well, now he's not here. How are you feeling? It's going. You're not entirely comfortable asking him yet to ask about the bathroom situation. Well, you know, that, that's kind of a different level of intimacy with the person. I would say this and we could talk about it when Tom comes back, but I feel like if Tom was assigned specifically to the Rams, he should have done the Rams experience also, correct? Wow. Well, he's got to do what Netflix, you know, yeah, but Netflix should have said, hey, this is kind of like a crazy plan. Let's have him do the crazy plan with that would have been good content. Yeah. He did exactly what they're doing. Yeah. He write about that. Well, it's too late, Billy. Next time. Yeah, next time. Next time. They're not Australia. All right. There you go. All right. That was winners and losers. And also a look ahead to the second key of the NFL season. All right. Thank you to Billy Gill. Thank you to Deontay Lee and of course, thank you to Christopher Sutton for producing additional production, supervision by Conor Nevans and Arjuna Ram Gopal. I'm Shield Kapadea. We'll talk to you after Rams 49ers on the ring and I'll talk to you on the ring. 21 plus and present in select states for Kansas in affiliation with Kansas, star casino or 18 plus and present in DC Kentucky or Wyoming gambling problem called 1-800 or 1-800-my-reset called 1-888-789-7777 or visit ccpg.org/chat in Connecticut or visit mdgamblinghelp.org in Maryland. The Patriots' offense was particularly weak, with minimal progress on drives and only one touchdown, signaling a season in trouble after a high-profile Super Bowl loss.
