WINNER: Are San Jose Sharks Giving Luca Cagnoni the Green Light to SHINE on Special Teams?

We're going to break down the winners and losers from free agency for the San Jose Sharks roster. We'll talk about the goalies who are I think definite winners. Godets new role, which might be a bit of a loser. We'll talk about the young forwards and Sharnashoff and call a graph and why things might be a little bit more difficult for them. But first we're going to start with two young defense and including Luca can you need. The biggest winner of them all. So let's start there with can you any who I do think after with free agency done. My girl might be pull you know makes a small sign in here there, but I do think from the sharks perspective. They're probably done. You know here, but look can you only though you have to look at as the potential biggest winner in free agency because his path to being an angel player is pretty defined right. So there's something brought in, you know, especially on the defense here right trading for nurse trading for Kesselring and then signing Jacob Truba. You know three defenseman here in as the sharks were aggressive and we knew they'd be aggressive to try to upgrade the blue line. So you guys have the same skill set that look at can you any has right and can you any who's been playing the last two seasons in the age. Ellen has put up extremely good numbers in the age. And then the last two seasons in the age. Two years ago, the only number one power play unit last year they fell to a whopping second power play unit in the age. Ellen can you any was a big reason for that right as he ran the power play for this for the barracuda. Smaller defenseman will say nicely at five foot nine and is known for his beautiful skating and his offensive skills and such but with John clingberg last year who was kind of given the reins of the power play like can you need didn't really have an opportunity except for you know a handful of times to go play with the sharks. And then the first one was was not really kind of given that opportunity to go run the power play now you can pencil him in as the power play one quarterback for this team because again right yes. And then you can do hopefully get some more power play time but the other guys in nurse in truba and in castle ring don't really scream power play quarterback and or love who kind of got it last year because by default because the sharks didn't really have anybody else. And then you want to kind of continue to take that next step and the special teams are going to be an area that I think are going to be under a lot of scrutiny this year especially if this team wants to try to be a more consistent offense and a you know a power or a potential. And then the special teams are going to have to make some strides here both power play and the pk but with look at can you only you have a guy who's been an excellent one of the best power play quarterbacks in the a h l the last couple seasons right. And then you look at his power play like production or if you look at production last year wasn't as great but a lot of it was because the barracuda's power play became a lot more diverse we've just discussed this before on the show we were you know the 24 25 season it was very much can you any and you put it all ski kind of putting up a bunch of power play numbers last year while the power play was still just as effective it was more spread out which is going to allow you to have a more sustainable. I think is a better word for it right so it wasn't just having to have can you any put up a bajillion points on the power play but he's been in a very effective power play quarterback because of his ability to score but also to help generate offense and create offense in his ability to you know read the play and get the puck to play makers right and you think about. The sharks power play which is very much watch will and Mac kind of pass the puck around to each other giving them a legitimate power play quarterback which they really haven't had since both of them entered the league and we're projecting with can you hear but he's right now probably the guy right. Because the sharks didn't really go out and sign somebody for that role right you you sign truba music defensive defenseman you sign nurse who right can do a little bit of offensive stuff but you know our good friend dick said is probably best to have him playing that more stay at home type of play role and then use castle ring who's you know again has some offensive chops as well but none of those guys scream power play quarterback here so can you only got an opportunity to do that. Can you only got an opportunity to really kind of sink his teeth into his role here and should be thinking going into the to training camp that he's got a little gym at chance and I think it's more than a chance again I'm I think you have to pencil him in right now because he just does something that not a lot of other guys on the blue line can do. I hear and I think he's going to be your power play one quarterback coming out of the gate and if if the sharks power play starts to season off hot he might just kind of lock himself into the role for the foreseeable future here as these sharks power play quarterback so right I mean the guy who we've been asking for a year you know not for years we were asking for more power play time for can you any we've been asking for him to to get a longer NHL look. He's going to get it like he he's going to get that look because the structures didn't really do anything else to kind of add to that I think another guy who's probably a big winner as well would be Nolan Allen so Alan who just signed a two year deal of course with with San Jose is a guy who again kind of his is by a couple seasons not really had a chance to play much NHL games you know and special with with Chicago and then of course the bear could but again you look at the sharks roster and the blue line here and he's going to have an opportunity to kind of be that seventh defense and I think it's going to be between him and labor hijack who the shark signed you know out of out of Europe here and was a former Ranger player and so but Nolan Allen who I think provides exactly what you want in a seventh defense right that kind of more defensive defensive guy guys can come in he's going to play hard he's not going to I don't think he's going to make a ton of mistakes he's going to do all the little things but Alan should be looking at this is his opportunity here to be on a full time NHL player and again if he's a seventh defenseman you know he maybe he's not playing every night as you would expect to the seventh defenseman but it's better to be I think playing in the NHL and making that NHL salary than it is compared to to be in the NHL and up the guy who my guess is with Alan is he'll probably have to he'll the sharks will probably make him clear waivers at some point because he will need to clear waivers to go back down to the NHL but I wouldn't be surprised if he spends the majority of the season in the NHL because again right your other defenseman yeah Philipson who I think is going to spend some time in the NHL you have Leo Salem Paulinius who's going to be in this first season in the NHL you have Eric Polkamp is going to be his first season and then you know Lee War hijack and maybe again maybe it is hijack who gets a seventh but I think for Alan you have to feel like you're in a legit but there's a legitimate competition for you to be and then the MTS have led for some reason who puck Pia keeps putting them on the sharks roster right now have let should not be played in the NHL right now as much as I like have led he's not NHL ready yet so out of all those guys no one Alan is most likely your seventh defenseman and you know again maybe the sharks sign someone closer to training camp or something like that because they do have plenty of cap space and maybe there's a veteran out there but where we stand right now in the middle of July that's probably your seventh defenseman right now it's there's no an Alan and you know if you need to give somebody a breather somebody gets injured or something like that I think you can come in and you can play a competent third parry minutes for you. for you. And I think that's also like, that's exactly what you need out of him. And a guy who played with Lukey Candy on the last year, a lot, and you would assume Ken Yoni kind of plays that Shane Gossis bear third pairing guy, but then is also getting all the power play. I would expect to get if you have to play Nolen Allen, you can prepare those two guys together. And they already have plenty of chemistry that we saw from that last year in the Barricuda. So I think those two young defensemen are, or had to feel like, pretty big winners for San Jose, or at least going into training camp this year. So we're going to talk about Godets. And I will talk about Godet later, but we're going to talk about Shurneshav and Graf here who, one of them's probably going to be a winner and one of them's probably going to feel a little bit further down the line up here. And I think one of them is going to end up being a loser because of the Mason Marchman signing. Right. Igor Sharnashov and Colin Graf. And we've talked about before with Mason Marchman and what his kind of projective role is going to be. And I do think he's going to get an opportunity to potentially play with Will Smith and Macklin Celebrity because we saw the sharks try to do that with key for Sherwood didn't work. The sharks quickly realized pivoted, moved Sherwood down any play when playing with Wendberg and looks great playing with Wendberg, right? I would be surprised to think about to that well with Mason Marchman. Right. And you think about who the played with Celebrity and Smith a lot last year and that was Colin Graf. And that was Igor Sharnashov. Graf scored a bunch of goals with them. But if you look at some of the analytics with those three together, not super great. And Sharnashov, while you saw them playing together and it looks very well, I do think my career is a little worrisome and about playing a bunch of young guys up there. Right. And he said that it's hard to win when you're playing a bunch of 20, like early 20 guys in your top six. And as much as I do think the sharks are going to try to win more this year, right? So assuming Marchman gets the first crack to play with those guys and maybe orcs, maybe it doesn't, right? And I do think there's evidence that it should work, especially when you see what's the Columbus Blue Dragons did. And kind of a very similar role for Marchments and playing with the guy like Fantilly, who's not as good as Macklin, Celebrity. But I think Adam Fentilly is a very fine player. And I would love to have Adam Fentilly on my team. You kind of picture like, okay, this should work, right? The styles that they play, the three roles on their, like, that should work. And Stenberg is going to be in the equation as well and probably going to get top-period minutes, especially for Gaiú Excel and SHL. Maybe it's played with Misa. But then it's that other spot, right? Is it Shurna Shavna's first full season? Do you play Colin Graf there? Is it Tyler Tafoli? And then if it's Tyler Tafoli, both these guys are kind of young forwards here who are going to be put in different, tougher situations for them to excel. And it's not that I don't think they can, right? We've seen Shurna Shavna play in the KHL kind of in a bottom-six role and was very successful with it. And we've seen him play, you know, he's since the time of the third line last year as well. But I think with Shurna Shavna and his skill set, and I assume he's just been in the gym and on the ice all summer long, I do expect him to come out and be ready to kind of take one of those spots. And again, his style of play with a bigger body and the speed of his and that kind of power for style of play that I think the sharks are looking forward to. I wouldn't be surprised if he does get an opportunity there to play with a guy like me. So those two we've seen play together very well in Saginaw and I know that's an OHL. But like that chemistry just doesn't go away and that chemistry will translate when, you know, in the NHL here if they're put together. So you do wonder for guy like Colin Graf who is that kind of Swiss army guy, right? Do you play him on the third line? Do you play him on the fourth line? Like where does Colin Graf fit in the lineup here? And especially when you have to fully and you have sure wood, right? And you have like broccoli goodger is not coming out of the lineup. Like you have goddad who will talk about here in a little bit more. You're kind of running out of spots. And maybe because of Shurna Shavna and his ability to just be able to go play in the AHL. Maybe that's what you do first. But I mean I don't think it's going to be very long until if he does go back down, I don't think it's going to be long until Shurna Shavna knocking on the door to play in the NHL again because he's good, right? Like he's that good. And yes, he's a second round pick. But if you redo that 2024 draft class, like as Shurna Shavna top 10 pick now, maybe like from what we've seen from him in the short amount of time, like he's a guy who looks like he's he's ready to be a full-time NHL player and kind of take that next step here. So one of these guys is going to see a different role this year. And whether it's Shurna Shavna goes back to the AHL or whether it's Colin Graf who's not going to maybe get those first line minutes that he got last year because I think there's going to be other guys in the pecking order, right? Whether it's Marchment, whether it's Stenberg, whether it's Shurna Shavna. Like I think those are three guys who Warsawski and Grier would probably rather have play first line minutes over Colin Graf. And that not to say Colin Graf still isn't valuable and still can't be valuable in the third like on a third line role or a middle six role there. But again, you're just doing the math here. You're running out of spots for a guy like Graf to play and play meaningful minutes here and not get maybe get the same opportunities that he was afforded last year that led him to scoring 20 goals. Like I still think Graf can be an extremely effective player in a in a more limited rate ice time here. It's still be your number one PK here and such. But I think if you're going out expecting Graf to kind of continue to increase that scoring, I don't know if that's going to be plausible given where his role might end up for San Jose. So I think the base in Marchment like call of Graf especially has to be the kind of the biggest loser out of the base in Marchment signing here because that just kind of takes away another top six spot for him. So especially like Echoing Gone. Okay like in Stenberg that's a one for one like that that's an easy like okay you're doing his job now. But I think the Marchment thing really kind of throws a wrench into where call and graph is supposed to kind of fit in with San Jose. So we're going to talk about some of the bottom six guys here and specifically Adam Godet. And then we'll talk about the Goleys to. uh. probably going to be big winners this upcoming year. So we'll get to that in just one second. All right, let's go, we'll spin positive here. I think that Goli's Nadeau Kovic and Asgard, big winners, big winners this off season, right? Yes, Eric Hummery I think is I think is more of a backup Goli and maybe he puts a little bit of pressure on one of those guys but I think we kind of know where Comrie who's already spoke that he's more than happy to play in the AHL. Cool and especially again with his contract at 1.15 million right on that exact about you can bury the AHL. We kind of know Asgard and Nadeau Kovic those are going to be your guys, right? But the blue line additions that the sharks made this off season and yes a lot of did they spend too much you know with a Jacob Truba contracts and the you know, crying Darnell nurses contracts and stuff like I'll give you my questions but if you're just looking at the players that they're adding compared to the players that they had last year these are upgrades, right? Nick Ledy who looked uninterested until he went got sent down to the AHL and then was down there played one game in like two months and then came back up and looked fine at the end of this season when I think he had a nice kind of docer reality. Maria Ferraro loved Maria Ferraro but plenty of you know, Maria Ferrar is a heart and soul type of guy but playing questions about his on ice play. John Klingberg, I mean we had an entire scale last season about John Klingberg and his play where you're either getting an exceptional play or you're just like shaking your head with John Klingberg. Ray like the veterans that they added in, Sam Dickinson taking you know, another like a big step I think in season two. Like the defense should be much better, right? And we did the ask Rob discussion last week about like how just how often he was peppered with shots and dealing with those mid-range shots where he struggled. On paper this defense is much better and again it's a very low par like James Cameron searching for that bar right now but this should be like an average-ish defense like if even like a slightly below average that's better than what you had last year which was not good right. And Vinny Darones who was you know a great addition as well and I'm happy he got paid by the caps and stuff but like in Lodrigor and who struggled last year as well like the the additions that the sharks added I think are going to make them a much tougher defense in their own end right and the sides that they have you know back there with Truba right Truba's a big guy Kessel rings a big guy Dickinson's a big guy Darnell nurses a big guy then Lupi Kenney doing his thing back there too and his his skating like I do think you're not going to see as many of the oh my gosh we're getting out shot 35 to 20 and we need Macklin to do something heroic here for us I don't think you're gonna see as much of that fingers crossed but I don't think you're gonna see as much I think you're like the course I'm very intrigued to see the coursey numbers this year from San Jose for a team that has been really struggling in that area right and has always kind of been outshot most of the last couple seasons here I expect those numbers to be a lot closer to 50% mark and because you're not giving up and you're not getting hemmed in your own zone and I think that's going to less wear and tear on the goalies and less stressful games and where you're not just kind of under siege all game I think the goalies are gonna we're gonna see much better performances from both the adult vision ascrop this season so one guy who's gonna be I think you know maybe a little bit of a loser too from this off season would be Adam Goddeat right you look at what the sharks did so last year rate they they re-signed title Andrea in the middle of the season at two years at 1.6 then you go out and you give Zac or Sopchuk a four-year deal at 2.35 okay you know you're thinking again you're you're you're your fourth line here because we just talked about the top nine it's already kind of crowded but now you have Goddeat, partly good job who again has never come out of the lineup or Sopchuk who the sharks clearly like because they just gave them a four-year deal title Andrea who Rhyme vs. Oste can't quit all playing for those three spots and then that doesn't include you know if a guy like Ethan Cardwell makes like Cardwell I think is like a perfect like makes the camp out of or makes the team out of camp type of player if he comes in healthy and looks good like perfect fourth line like Cardwell's should be your broccoli like broccoli good your replacement right but you have three guys who are all competing for four spots there and I don't think that that lineup is very like locked in in any way shape or form and it's going to be kind of rotating throughout with the again the exception of Barclay Goodrow but Ostechuk's a player who I think grew on a lot of us as the season went on right and showed a lot of chops and showed a lot of of of ability there and I think as a player who's kind of ready to carve out a little bit bigger role whether that's on the pk or you know when especially with his speed like you can see him on the pk b and like an absolute monster out there with his size and his speed and his reach like it's cool sign me up for that but I think the re bringing back to Landria who the shark staff loves the Landria for some reason and like that really kind of puts Godet in a tough spot because Godet does a lot of like the scoring and stuff right and there's a guy who's been able to put up double digit goals the past two seasons despite playing fourth line minutes for both the sharks and the Sends um you wonder if if if he's not scoring can he do kind of the other things that you're that they're looking for right and the opposite with title Andrew who can never score but does all the little things that the sharks coaching staff wants to see right he takes face off not that well he's okay but like he takes face offs like he kills penalties all that stuff you do wonder if it's like I'm not saying you need to trade one because I mean right now the sharks have 13 forwards here like you still need you need you typically want like 14 forwards and then your seven defense been right because you use more forwards so um but like Godet who was I thought playing really well at the end of the season again it's just gonna be he's just I think it's gonna be a little bit of a competition on that fourth line and kind of where does Godet fit in there and I think for him I think the Dela Andrea sign like resigning really kind of made things his life a little bit more difficult so and his spot a little less assured here so um that's gonna be
