Why it's So Hard to Dress Stylishly

The podcast, hosted by Sherry Brasier, addresses why dressing stylishly is difficult for many women. The core issue is not body shape or lack of fashion sense, but that most people’s closets are not organized around the actual activities they do daily. Sherry introduces the concept of "five lifestyle categories"—the top five activities in your life, such as work, exercise, date nights, or errands. By defining these categories, you can structure your closet to group similar clothes together, making it easier to find outfits and reducing morning stress. The second step is to identify which category you have too few clothes for and focus your shopping on that area, rather than buying default items like yoga pants out of habit. This method helps women move away from autopilot dressing and create a wardrobe that truly supports their lifestyle. Sherry promotes her program, "Style Mastery," which guides women through this process and offers bonus seasonal style guides. She emphasizes that once you learn to define your style for one activity, the process transfers to others, making dressing simple and confidence-boosting. The ultimate goal is to help women feel put-together and confident every day, not just for special occasions.

Welcome to the Creating Unshakeable Self-Components Podcast. I am your host, Sherry Brasier, your style bestie. And today, we are going to talk about why it's so hard to dress stylishly and some tips that I have for you to make it easier. Who is in? Right? I'm in. So if you're watching this video, you'll see that I am not in my normal space and I am not in my normal attire because I am in Las Vegas this weekend. And today, I am in my hotel room just grindin' it out on my microphone. I'm recording all the podcasts that I can think are in my brain of topics. I have some outlines. I have a whole bunch of stuff that's in my Google Docs of just tips and directions that I have been giving my clients and style mastery. And in my networking group, there's just so many things that I have been talking to all the women about. And this weekend, I'm gettin' it done. gettin' it into an audio file so that I can get it uploaded into my podcast for you to listen to. So let's get started. Today, we are talking about why it's so hard to dress stylishly. Why is it so hard to dress stylishly? I'm gonna give you some tips. So one of the top things that makes it hard to dress stylishly is something so incredibly basic that most women kick themselves when I point it out to them. And also, people in this space, in the personal styling space, are not talking about this. They are not framing it this way, at least that I've heard of. And I think it's probably because it's not sexy. I mean, it's really kind of dumb. And I mean, really, when I point it out, it's so basic. And everyone says, "Oh my gosh, why didn't I think of that?" And I said, "I know, I hear you." And it's not your body shape. The problem is not your body shape. It is not the lack of fashion sense that's keeping you from dressing stylishly. It's because you don't have your closet structured for the activities that you actually do on the daily in your whole, your life. And you don't have the clothes for those activities in your closet. So simple. And you're probably going, "Yeah, I know. How do I fix it?" Right? I work with my clients in style mastery on defining their five activities that they do the most in their actual life and making sure that they have the right clothes for those activities. I call it their five lifestyle categories. This is what I call them. And lots of people might have the same categories, but a lot of people have different categories. And what happens is we as creators, we just pick a lifestyle activity like a date night or being on stage or some kind of an event or whatever, or springtime, a seasonal thing, right? And we put stuff together for that. You've seen travel capsules. You've seen seasonal style guides. I have them right now. You can get my spring style guide right now for $37. And it's all of the inspiration that you need for spring. And there's some little videos and workbooks and there are worksheets and different things for you to print out that you can take notes on and whatever. And then there's inspiration. There's shopping boards. There's all kinds of great stuff. And it's all geared toward the spring to give you ideas for springtime, right? So I'm not saying that any of this is bad. None of it is bad. It's just that when my clients come into style mastery, they don't have a system set up where they can categorize those things. So the spring style guide comes out. They don't know how to use it in their life. They don't know how to make the best use of that guide because they don't know the activities that they're getting dressed for the most in their life. Okay? So when you know what you're getting dressed for and you have the right clothes for that activity or the event, then getting dressed becomes very simple and it's not overwhelming at all. So most of us really do have activities that we do a lot and can be categorized into five categories. And when it comes to clothes, we have a lot of types of clothing that we love and gravitate to. So think about the items in your closet that you wear the most. You might really like yoga pants and a sweatshirt. I like that and you wear this outfit on most days. And so you have these items in every color and every style because you wear them a lot. Maybe you have a favorite color and you have multiples of those yoga pants and sweatshirts and your favorite color. Now you can decide if you're wearing that outfit for the intended activity or if it's just a default outfit. So if it's a default outfit, then knowing the activities that you do the most will help you determine if that outfit is appropriate or if you'd rather wear something else for that activity that you're getting dressed for. Okay, so the simple exercise will help you determine what items you want to add to your closet and that will also help you know what you like so that you can feel confident that you have the clothes for every activity that you're doing in your life. So that's why I call them lifestyle categories because we want to take the life that you're actually living, the places that you're actually going, the things you're actually getting dressed for and we wanna put them into these five categories so that you know what you're shopping for and where you're gonna wear it. I don't know how many times people say to me, well I don't know where I would wear this. I don't know where I would wear this outfit. Like I can wear it to you know this event or this thing but then I don't know where else to wear else I would wear it. Right? And sometimes that's just the truth is you need an outfit for one specific event and you're never gonna wear it again. That happens. Think about weddings. The bride never wears her wedding dress ever again. And sometimes the mother of the bride never wears her dress again. Sometimes you have an event. I had a Christmas party a couple of years ago that I was going to for my husband's work and it was a black tie affair. So he had a tux and I had a formal dress that we wore for that one dinner and I've never worn that dress again and he's never worn his tux again. And that was the deal when we went into it. We knew that we were only going to wear that outfit once. And so we shopped according to that and we knew that that dress was just gonna hang in my closet until maybe there's another event that comes up that I'll be able to wear it but maybe there won't be. So that does happen but it's rare. It's rare that you will go out and buy clothes and buy outfits that you'll never wear again. What's more common is that you think that you have to have a special occasion to get dressed. for, that just yoga pants and sweatshirt will do for all of the activities in your life, and that the only thing that deserves getting dressed for stylishly is church or work or whatever event you've deemed is worthy of getting dressed stylishly for. So it is really, really helpful to have someone that is a neutral party to help you go through these activities and go through your actual life and see what you do for your actual life, and then how you like to dress, what makes you feel the best about yourself and makes you feel beautiful, makes you feel stylish, makes you feel like you look stylish, right? So maybe you have a certain color that you love, and so your whole closet is full of this one or like this one particular color, or maybe it's one or two colors, and you love them, and that's great, and you love all those things, but you kind of want to have a little bit more variety, then having these lifestyle categories will help you be able to find those colors easier. I know that sounds crazy, but it happens. Style really is simple, and using these strategies that I'm going to talk to you about is very, very helpful in reducing the overwhelm when you're getting dressed in the morning. So number one is define those five activities, define your lifestyle categories. Okay, so I'm going to probably use categories and activities kind of interchangeable, and I'm going to try not to do that because I know it's going to confuse you, but what I have my clients do is I have them write down all of the places that they go on a regular week. Like I even go through the days of the week. What do you do on Sunday? What do you do on Monday? What do you do on Tuesday? What do you do on Wednesday? And we go through and we figure out what you do in your life on a regular basis, and we just write it all down. So you go to work, you work out, you walk the dog, you go on date night, you do yard work, you work on the farm, you have this outfit or that outfit, you have, you know, you are a mom, and so you do mom stuff go to the carpool or clean the house or whatever. And we put down all of those things. And then I go through and ask you what do you wear for each one of those categories? And immediately you're going to put things together. Well, this category and or this activity and that activity are kind of the same. And so they're going to I'm going to wear the same type of clothes for both of those things. Great. What category is that? Maybe it's exercise. And you're going to walk the dog and you're going to go work out and you're going to go play pickleball with your friends. And maybe you have a zoom class or whatever that you like to go to, all of those things you're going to wear the same type of clothing too. So all of those things go into one category that's exercise. Okay. Then let's say you you have a job and you go to work and you have to dress up. Well, maybe you go to church on Sundays too. So you have you dress up on Sundays and you you kind of dress up a little bit more for work as well. So those might be interchangeable. Those might be the same type of category that you would wear clothes to both of those things that are similar. Okay. Then you structure your closet or your dresser or your you know wardrobe, whatever with these lifestyle categories in mind. Now there's lots of different ways to style your your closet. There are a zillion ways to Sunday. How to how to style your closet. But what I find with myself and with my clients is there are things that are naturally better suited in a dresser and they're that are naturally suited better in a closet. So I put all of my exercise clothes in my dresser. So if I'm going to go walk the dog or I'm going to go play pickleball or I'm going to go work out whatever and I need my workout stuff. It's all in my dresser. It's not in my closet in my dresser in the you know wherever else right scattered all over the place. So my dresser has all of my workout clothes and then it has all of my underwear and my socks. So my pantyhose for Sunday, my slips, my you know all my socks and all my underwear and all my activity stuff. I mean all my exercise stuff is all in my dresser because it can all be folded. None of it needs to be hung up. It just works in my dresser. And then in my closet I have my dresses in my pants and my shirts and jackets and different you know different things that need hangers and those are in my closet. So that's what I mean by structure your closet or your dresser with the lifestyle categories in mind and put like things to like things together so that it's easy to find what you need. Number three is identify the activity or the category that you don't have enough clothes for. So one of my clients she exercises a lot and she's on a couple of teams and she coaches some sports and different things and so she doesn't just go to the gym herself and work out a lot but she does do that a couple of days a week but she's a coach and she is on some clubs and some teams and you know different things and so she she's moving and shaken literally a lot. And she found that she had an over surplus of exercise clothes because that is something that she does quite frequently in her life and so she buys a lot of that stuff. It just her brain, her eye is just drawn to it when she goes into a store. So when she was doing the closet edit she realized that she had a lot of workout clothes and she was like I probably just need to cut back on those exercise clothes and I said okay yeah that's that is interesting for you to see that's good good for you to see. And so then I asked her what category what lifestyle category what do you do in your regular life that you don't have the clothes for and she said just every day running around, running around clothes I don't have. I usually just wear my workout clothes because I don't really have anything that I like and that I feel good in and so I just end up using I just end up wearing my yoga pants in my workout clothes. So we dug into that and found some you know interesting good things that that she didn't realize was happening and it was really really really good for her. It was a really really good exercise for her. It gave her a lot of awareness into herself into the way that she thinks about herself in the way that she wants to think about herself. It was it was really eye opening for her. So identify the category that you don't have enough clothes for and focus on this category when you're adding clothes to your wardrobe. So if you go out to the grocery store or to the mall or whatever for some other thing and you end up buying some things you end up seeing some things that might be fun to have then just make sure that they fit into that category that you have decided you need more stuff for. Okay because what I see my clients doing is getting dressed for the way that they feel in the moment that they're in their closet getting dressed. They feel overwhelmed and they don't know how to do it and they're they're just stressed out right and not knowing how to put outfits together that look good and that grab their their attention and so they just get their jeans or go to jeans and t-shirt and off they go. They feel rushed in the morning because they don't have the time that it takes to find an outfit that they've put together before. So they just grab their yoga pants and their hoodie and off they go right. I mean how many of us have done this? I do it regularly so they grab their go to to yoga pants and their hoodie because it's fast, comfortable and simple. And everyone does this. It's not just you. No one has a boutique in their closet or 30 minutes every morning to put a new outfit together from their own closet that they've never worn before. So if you're frustrated, overwhelmed, or apathetic about getting dressed every day, you're not alone. But doing these five lifestyle categories is so helpful because it organizes your closet in a way that puts styles of clothing together for you. This makes it easy to put outfits together because they're your clothes and they're not all mixed up. When you spend 10 minutes looking through t-shirts to find a blouse for church, it's easy to get frustrated, right? Because the t-shirts and the blouses don't go together. Once you have those five lifestyle categories and have your closet organized with these categories, then you can clearly see what types of clothing that you need to put into your wardrobe. So for example, if you structure your closet in these five lifestyle categories and realize you don't have very many options for date night, then you can now go to work defining your date night style. Defining your date night style is so much more simple than the overwhelming task of defining a style for your entire wardrobe. So that's the work that we do inside Sound Astray. I will help you define your five lifestyle categories and then I'll help you get your closet structured in a way that you can see what's missing. I have now walked multiple, many, many women through the process and I'd love to walk you through it too. If this is a source of frustration for you, then I can help. Once you know the activities that you're getting dressed for, you'll be able to see what doesn't belong there and you'll know the items to add to your wardrobe to make it much easier to get dressed. So, so many of us feel all over the place when we're trying to get dressed for the, for the every day. I've created a method for seeing what clothes belong in your closet versus the default outfits that you're wearing on autopilot. In style mastery, we will work on these things. Getting the right clothes in your closet to not wearing outfits that are on autopilot every day. And once you learn the process of defining your style for certain activity, that process will transfer to your style and the other activities that you do in your life as well. It's easy peasy. Because you'll actually understand and know what clothing items you're looking for. So good, right? Seriously, style mastery is where you're going to do this app and it's open right now. So come and join us in style mastery. Doors are open and if you come in today, then you will get all of the seasonal style guides for free that I'm creating this year.
