When Will Jesus Return?

This sermon concludes a series by answering the question of when Jesus will return. The speaker clarifies that Jesus' repeated declaration "I am coming soon" in Revelation 22 is not a chronological promise but a statement of certainty and suddenness. The Greek word *tachy* describes the swift, lightning-like manner of his return, not a short time frame. Despite 2000 years, believers are called to live in active readiness. The speaker outlines four key practices: eagerly waiting for Christ's appearance, staying spiritually alert (unlike Jonah who slept through his calling), guarding against deception (the "spirit of antichrist" being anything that opposes Jesus' lordship), and enduring trials with joyful patience. The prosperity gospel is condemned as a false teaching that denies the reality of suffering. The sermon emphasizes that current events—wars, famines, and disasters—should spur believers to action and prayer, not fear or retreat. Two recommended books help demystify the book of Revelation and end-times theology. Ultimately, the message is that Jesus' return is a certain, sudden event, and Christians are to live faithfully, longing for his kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven.

[Music] Over the summer term we have been going through some questions. We opened it up at the beginning of the year and said if you've got some questions to ask things that we don't normally cover in church or things that you haven't heard anything about please write in, speak to us and we'd love to answer your questions. We've answered all sorts of questions and this week our final week in the series we're answering this one. When will Jesus return? Before I get into it I just want to recommend two short, sort of two 300 page books one by John Hosea called the Lamb, the Beast and the Devil which is a really great simple commentary on the book of Revelation and it just kind of debunks and demystifies and takes away the kind of scaryness of the book of Revelation. It makes it applicable to us. In his basic message is we're all going to go through hard times. Bad things happen but Jesus is on the throne. He rules, he reigns and one day he will do away with all evil. It's a great book and the other one is one that I've just finished reading and it's by a guy called Matthew L. Holstead and it's called The End of the World as you know it and it's a brilliant little book and it just goes through some questions like how should we read the book of Revelation? What is the mark of the beast? Will Christians be raptured? What is the tribulation? Will there be one? What is it in? Who is the Antichrist? It's just a very kind of simple straightforward book written by again a very intelligent man on topic. I'd really encourage you to read these books. I'll put a link on them in the WhatsApp group and online so you're able to find them as well on Amazon or wherever you should choose to buy. But this morning how many of you watched the series chosen? Those of you who haven't get on it, it's brilliant. If you've got Prime, it's on Amazon Prime. If you've not got that, I think you can legally stream it online as well. They just have all the episodes free online. It's a wonderful series. I think they're on series five now. It's the story of Jesus and His disciples and they do it really, really well. If you've watched it, one of the things you'll know is there's a running joke going through that shows them on the word soon. Jesus, when's the kingdom going to come soon? When are we going to go to Jerusalem soon? When are we going to have lunch soon? Jesus says it was a rye smile continuously all the time. The reason why I love that is because when we're talking about Jesus' return to Jesus, what Jesus says in Revelation chapter 22, three times, Jesus says, you see John has seen these amazing visions. He's seen all the what's happening. And then he's crying out, Lord Jesus, when are you going to come and make everything right? When is heaven going to invade earth? When are you going to make a new creation? God, when are you going to do it? And Jesus' answer is three times. He's the one who keeps the words of the prophecy written in this scroll. Verse 12, look, I'm coming soon. My reward is with me and I will give to each person according what they have done. Verse 20, he who testifies these things, yes, I am coming soon. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. He says it's three times and three times there's no accident. If you've been around for a while, you know that I talk about quite a lot. That numbers in the Bible quite often aren't about mathematics, their theology. And so the number three, it means unshakable fact. It means nothing could be more true than this. So in scripture, it doesn't just say God is holy, which he is. It says these holy, holy, holy. It's not that he could, not that that's the ceiling of his holiness. It means he could not be any more holy. There is nothing more holy than God. It repeats it three times. I mean, just for interesting, you know, Peter. How many times does Peter deny Jesus before the cockroach? Three times. The answer is going to be three for the next three questions, just to you know, okay? And he says, and that just shows that he completely utterly failed Jesus. But in the next few chapters, how many times does Jesus say, do you love me? Three times. He restores him, which means that even though Peter completely failed him, Jesus completely utterly restored him. How many times, when Jesus went into wilderness for 40 days, did Satan tempt him? Three times, how many times did he overcome? Three times, which means he completely overcame the evil one. All times that Jesus was tempted, we know that because he was tempted in every single way just like us. But in the wilderness we see that Jesus completely overcame all temptation. I mean, how many times does he, how many days was he in the grave? Three days. I mean, he completely had victory over death. It had complete victory over our sin. And so when Jesus says, I'm coming soon, I'm coming soon, I'm coming soon. It means it's not a wish, it's not a nice idea, it's not something that we're hoping might happen if everything lines up correctly. He means he will utterly, completely. It is a stonewall fact that he is going to come soon. But he said this kind of 2000 years ago. I ain't, soon seems a bit of a stretch, doesn't it? Let's be honest, let's be honest, soon seems a bit of a stretch. So before we start arguing with Jesus that 2000 years isn't soon, let us quickly, I like to look at the Greek. Let's see what the Greek word that we translate into soon means. Well, the Greek word we use is "tachi". And well, yet it does. It means "quick, speedily, without delay". In the story of the Prodacal Sun, Luke writes that when the Prodacal Sun turns back to the first time, it turns back to the father and comes repentantly to him. The father says, bring "tachi", bring quickly, the best robe, the shoes, the sandals, the ring, there's an urgency to it. Do it quickly. Well, Jesus doesn't seem to have come very quickly. Again, 2000 years would say, "That's not too quick". But actually, in the Greek grammar, "tachi" can be used one of two ways. It can be used chronologically, as in to say, "It's going to happen in a few minutes", or it can be used to describe the manner in which it happens. Now, we've got a young guy in our church called Joel, who's a sprinter, or as a herdler. And he could quite happily say, "I race tachi". And in that saying, he could mean, "My race starts in a minute", or he could mean, "When my race starts, I will be quick". It can either do the chronologically "when", or it could be the manner in which it's going to happen. In many of us said, "Well, it doesn't matter that it's been 2000 years", because as Peter says, "Don't forget, dear friends, that with the Lord, a thousand years is like a day". But many scholars have pointed out that when Jesus says, "I'm coming tachi", He is more likely describing the sudden, rapid, distinctive event that will occur. Look at this, this is how he describes it in Matthew. It says, "For as lightning comes across the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the son of man be". "When it happens, it will be slow, it will be boom, it won't be drawn out really long, and we'll be waiting for it to happen". "No, no, no, no, no, it will be quick, sudden, we'll all see it happening like lightning rushing across the sky". "I'm missable", he says, Paul says, in 1 Corinthians 15, "Listen, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed". "How in a flash, in the twinkle of an eye, at the last trumpet, for the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised in perishable, and will be changed". He says, "In a twinkle of an eye", which is the Greek word, which is in Atomah, which was where we get the word Atom from, which is the smallest unit of time in the ancient Greek language. It's going to happen, boom! And so, what about this 2000 years? Because 2000 years makes it feel like it probably didn't mean when he was saying, "I'm going to come next week". I mean many of them hope that would be the case, but what it more likely describes is the fact that when he does come, it will be swift, quick, and sudden. But when will that be? When will that be? I mean, I don't know about if any of you have had conversations like this, but I had a conversation with a guy a few months ago. a'ch wedi hynny i hynnych a'i folleith etian a'i jorydyn ni'n gallen dysgu'n gael Ryddoedd ochi hynnych fyrodd hon, cue fel hynnych waeth o beth o ffordd y plegoedd o gyfer r Gymdol i d Weissau a'ch gyda'r ymdyn ni'n gael rydym yn ymdyn ni'n gael rydym yn ymdyn ni'n gael rydym yn ymdyn ni'n gael Wenairų am ei fod yn betharn, wrth ym. And on the spoke to Spain there's a massive storm isn't there. Where's Jonah in this storm? Can you remember? He's the belly of sleep. What's he doing? He's sleeping. And then the sailors, they keep this storm and they start crying out. They're all their gods. They start doing all they know to do to try and help them survive this storm. And then eventually they come to Jonah and one of them kicks him. I don't know if that's in there, but that's not how I imagine it. He kicks him. He says, wake up, wake up. And this is God speaking through the sailors saying, Jonah, wake up. You are meant to be going to ninnover. I have called you to preach the gospel to those who don't know me. Instead, you're sleeping. You're doing the opposite to what I have called you to do. You see, we are called to walk daily with Jesus to listen to his prompting. And we do everyday stuff, like we pray that when we go into the soup markers, when we pick our kids up from school, when we do whatever normal mundane stuff, we do it in a different light of Jesus, what do you have for me in this? How could you use me today as I'm doing just the mundane? Jesus says that wars and famines and global catastrophes will hit this world. But when we see them, we're not meant to get our maps and start plotting. Jesus must come back in seven years from now. It's not what we're meant to do. We're meant to look at them. Jesus says they're like birth pains. That when we see, oh, there's wars, oh, there's famine. When we pray, when we sit down and we pray for our brother and sisters in Ukraine, when we go through war time, when we pray with our brother and sisters like Michael, who when he was sharing about poverty and children needing homes and in the water being polluted we're not, we're, we're, this meant to wake us up and go, right, okay, Jesus, what do you want me to do? What good works have you got me to do in this situation? Not retreat and say, Jesus, well, just get us all out of it. To let current events, wars, famines spur us on to wake up and do what Christ has called us to. So we're called to eagerly wait, stay alert and we're called to guard against deception. Matthew 24, Jesus says, watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming that I am the Messiah and will deceive many. One John 4 says every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of Antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. I said I'm just going to just kind of pick off some other questions that people have written. This is one of them because sometimes in Christianity you can feel like the Antichrist is a game of where's Wally. Anyone who feel like that? I mean in my life I'm alone. I've heard Christian people talk about this leader, that leader, this ruler, they're the Antichrist. This system of government, they are the Antichrist and we're going to point constantly looking at it. And what I notice actually, I've just researched, what's quite funny is that especially in the last century a lot of the Western church would look at Russian Prime Minister's or President's, they'd look at people in the Middle East and they'd say that might be the Antichrist. God fearing churches in Russia, they'd look to American Presidents and go he must be the Antichrist. They'd look at the Pope and they'd go he must be the Antichrist. Joe the Antichrist is not mentioned in the book of Revelation. Instead as John says it is a spirit of Antichrist. It is everything in this world that is anti Jesus. It's everything in this world. Revelation what it talks about is that we live in Babylon. As we looked at it last week there are principalities and powers at work in this world that have enslaved the world and that is Babylon. We can bring this into our Christian living when we say Jesus I want to follow you. I want to follow you Jesus but I'm not willing to sacrifice everything. I love my home, I love my kids, I love my wife, I love all this kind of stuff and Jesus just going to slot in with all that stuff. That's the spirit of Antichrist. Jesus says he is to be above all things in our life. Everything comes under all those things. That's how we can gladly lose stuff in our life and we can lose things, we can lose health, we can lose money but stay joyful because those things aren't our gods. Jesus is our God and if we follow Him we have more than enough. We have more than enough. The problem is we like stuff and there's nothing wrong with money, there's nothing wrong with wealth, there's nothing wrong with influence and health and any of that kind of stuff. But like I said before when good things, we make them ultimate things. Scripture tells us that they will destroy us. Good things that become ultimate things will destroy us. So we are to guard against deception. Jesus Christ is Lord and Lord of all. Let us ask you is Jesus Christ the ultimate Lord in your life? If He's not we can sort that out. We'd love to pray with you, love to talk with you. If you want to make Jesus Lord of your life today, come speak to us. Are they endure with joyful patience? James says, be patient then brothers and sisters until the Lord's coming. One Peter 4 says, "Difference, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you as though something strange was happening to you. So be a surprise when bad stuff happens, but rejoice as in much that you participate in the suffering of Christ so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed." There are two, not very good doctrines. The first one is down right evil I think, that people buy in too, that directly go against this. The first one is called the prosperity gospel. The prosperity gospel teaches. You're sick, you're ill, you've not got very much money, or it's because you don't have enough faith. You don't pray enough. You don't give enough. I mean on that logic, Elon Musk, Bill Gates are the holiest people on planet Earth. I know it's not about what we give, what we, what we, what we, what we, it's about the fact that Jesus has given us all for us. And he tells us that in this world we will have troubles. It's not a sign that you're a bad person because you're going through worse things than others, someone else. You know, sometimes sin does have consequences. If you've been addicted to alcohol for 20 years, you can turn to Jesus. He forgives you for putting that as a God in your life. But apart from a miracle, you probably will still have liver and other complications in your life. It's not God's judgment on you. It's just a consequence. The other one is the rapture doctrine, which just it's not in scripture. And I'm going to talk a bit about the rapture next term and just completely debunk it. But basically the rapture, it's a doctrine. It's about 250 years old and it states that the earth is going to get really, really bad. Things are going to get awful, but Christians, you don't need to worry. Don't worry Christians, because God's not going to let anything bad happen to you, because He's going to beam you up out of this world. He's going to beam you up out of this world and you're going to miss all the troubles of this world. He's going to take you out of the great tribulation. And now, again, like I said in the last point, Jesus doesn't pray for us to be taken out of the world. He prays that we would endure through it. And actually, we will go through troubles. Some of us will go through great troubles. Some of us will go through smaller troubles. There are brothers and sisters, some of you have come from places that you've been in places where there's kidnappings, where people are being killed, where there's awful things happening to people just because they call on the name of Jesus. That is a great trouble. That is a great trial. Some of you, it may not be because you're calling on Jesus, you're God, but you've got massive health issues. You are going through certain things which actually are a great trouble to you. And that is no less. There's no less. And actually, one thing that doesn't help is that in the book of Revelation, in our English translations, it says that there will be tribulation. Yn gwybod yw'r iad hynny, mae'n gwybod yw'r iad hynny, mae'n gwybod yw'r iad hynny, mae'n gwybod yw'r iad hynny. Mae'n gwybod yw'r iad hynny. Mae'n gwybod yw'r ysbytio iad hynny. Mae'n gwybod ysbytio iad hynny. Mae'n gwybod yw iad hynny. 6. He says that we have to choose love and gentleness. Philippians 4 verse 5 says, "Let your gentleness be evident to all." John 13, a new commandment I give you. Love one another as I have loved you. You must love one another by this. Everyone will know that you are my disciples. If you love one another. When we talk about end times, we talk about what people believe about the book of Revelation. It's very easy to get into kind of tribal camps. And I don't like this person because they believe that. I don't like that person because they believe that. And kind of start to infighting about what different people believe. Remember what we talked about last week? We don't fight against flesh in blood. Our fight is against the principle of the powers of this world. And Jesus says, "Love those who disagree with you." "Love those who don't see eye to eye to." "Love your enemy," he says. And let me tell you, there are some really wicked things happening in this world. People do horrendous things. And there is a temptation to go right. I hate that person. The world does it. I mean, the media, the British media, makes millions off of one's pitching one side off against another. It's not so with you. We are to love people. Remember what I said a few weeks ago? We are to love people despite our differences. That is how people know that Jesus is amongst us. There are evil things that happen. But what Jesus tells us is that I will deal with that. I will deal with the evil of this world. You are called me and you. We are called to love. And actually the way that we fight against evil is that we love one another. Is that we speak good of one another. That we encourage one another. Because Jesus is over all. He has power over the enemy. And let me just say, if you have been involved in sexual sin, or you've been in a controlling relationship, or maybe you once were a worsher of another God, maybe you've been involved in the occult, terror reading, or anything like that. These things, they give the enemy a foothold in your life. And there could be a lie that says, "I've done this. I've been there. God could never forgive me." No, no, no, no, the truth is Jesus has power and authority. He will one day deal with all evil. If you come to Him in repentance, in the name of Jesus, the foothold in your life is gone. The chains will be broken. See, there's this, there's this, this, this scene in the book of Revelation, just to give that kind of a climax of evil. aeilau os i sylwanau fwy ame pwysio gwrsg a'r noiswn cylif есть 'لمau' a'r 'mirbyn sy wyng namo' chilli yn y nu'r fi 'gael yng Ng B tabla' a ' علwbr ' extended fwy hwn l10 cwyl sydd ynFin ymllun o'rrite flyr neu sl tooor ' lyr bob pan wrongon knew chylaf fourd 'blade nido' a ' mam fydd chi' 'mbl reg лиm Witch mae Ly XP mae 'ie yw cof fel b yw'r ia unor yn gwyldi. 'J slavery saying that we can leave it in their faithful hands of our gods to do what is right in the ends.' And finally, so we're called to eagerly wait to steiler, to guard against deception, to endure with joyful patience, to pursue purity and holiness, to choose to love, and to be gentle, and we're finally we're called to speed his arrival. Matthew 24 says, 'And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, then the end will come.' Do you know, as a Christian, we don't know when Jesus will come back. We can't guess, but you get the privilege of being able to bring that day forward. So Jesus saying, 'You get the privilege of being able to bring that day forward.' See, the reason why it's been 2000 years since Jesus ascended into heaven and not come back yet is because Scripture says he is patiently waiting for every single one of his elect to come and turn and bend the knee to him. 2 Peter 3 and I says, 'The Lord is not slow, he's not slow in keeping his promise, he promised that he will return, he's not slow in some would understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.' Jesus return, it's not found in superpowers, it's not found in who's the president of Israel or anything of that, it's not found in some secret Bible codes. Jesus very clearly says, 'The end will come when the gospel is preached to all peoples of the world, when all the elective come in, then the end will come.' 'Then the end will come.' Church, we get to participate in this. Jesus is calling us to share the gospel, remember last week of you were here, I said at the very beginning of the message, I'm going to tell you what both of these week's messages are about. They're about making disciples, baptising people in the name of the Father, the Son, in the Spirit, and in doing so we are drawing the time of Jesus closer, we're drawing it closer church.' So he said, 'Peter says that we can speed the day of his arrival. How we do that? The way we started, by keeping our lamps lit, by shining the gospel that is within us, letting the light of Christ the hope of glory, shining through our desire for his kingdom, shining through our desire for truth, for being joyful through trials, through pursuing purity, for loving one another, we stay ready to tell those who are around us about Christ. That is your point. That is what we're designed to do. That is what every single one of us have been called to do to go into this world and make disciples.' I was talking to a friend who is an elder of a church somewhere else in the country, and he said, 'We felt God speak to us, we prayed, and we felt God speak to us about planting another church in the city where we're out.' 'And we looked at each other and thought, 'No, we can't do that. We're too small, it's not the right time.' 'What happened is, a few months later, they found out that another church from the same new frontier's family of churches decided that they were called to plant a church in that same city.' 'The moral, if you will, of that story is, God will have his people. God will save people, and allow the save them through conversations and the way you act, or he'll use someone else.' 'Please, Jesus, may it be through us. Please, Jesus, may it be through us, and then the end will come.' 'Let's pray, let's pray, let's pray that God will use us, that we would be ready, ready to shine his light, not just be happy here, we'd go out into this world and live as if he is coming back today.' 'So Jesus, we come before you. Jesus, there is no one like you.' 'God, and I just want to, right now, just repent and say sorry for times when I allow other things in my life to crowd in. I put on the same step as you as Lord of my life.' 'Lord Jesus, I want to say sorry Lord Jesus, for since I've given myself over to Lord Jesus.' 'Lord God, I'm sorry for not living every day, pursuing you, Lord Jesus, doing what you have called me to do.' 'But Lord God, as we have heard, over the last three weeks, you are calling us, Lord Jesus, to live for you.' 'And as we do, as we march, as we jump, Lord God, you are changing the atmosphere.' 'Lord Jesus, in the words of Isaiah, Lord God, as we see a lost and broken people, God across the Filed Coast, across this nation, across this world, Lord Jesus, may every single one of us have the heart of Lord.' 'Send me, send me, send me to my neighbours, send me to my streets, send me to my workplace, send me to the neighbouring towns and cities, send me to the nations.' 'Jesus, use us, use me in bringing more sons and daughters into your kingdom to speed your final return.' Amen, amen.

Summary:

FAQs

Jesus says He is coming soon, but 'soon' describes the suddenness of His return, not a specific time. He will come like lightning, in a flash, at an unexpected hour.

The Greek word 'tachi' means quickly or without delay, but it describes the manner of His return—swift and sudden—not a chronological time. Even after 2000 years, it emphasizes the certainty and speed of the event.

We should eagerly wait for His coming, stay alert spiritually, guard against deception, and endure with joyful patience. We are called to be ready, keep our lamps lit, and do good works.

The Antichrist is not a single person but a spirit of opposition to Jesus that is already in the world. It includes anything that puts other things above Christ as ultimate in our lives.

No, Jesus prayed that we would not be taken out of the world. Instead, we should pray for God's kingdom to come on earth and long for His presence while doing His work in difficult situations.

Two books are recommended: 'The Lamb, the Beast and the Devil' by John Hosea, and 'The End of the World as You Know It' by Matthew L. Holstead. Both provide simple, clear explanations of Revelation.
