What to Make of Week 0 + A Look At Week 1's Best Games | The BFW Show 8.31.26

The Brandon Walker College Football Show Episode 9 begins with a reflective tone on Week Zero, emphasizing that it was a weak start to the season compared to the loaded Week Two schedule. Host Brandon and guest Blutman draft a top-10 list of Week One games, with Ole Miss vs. Louisville taking first place due to its high stakes, new coaches, and regional rivalry. They critique the frequent use of neutral-site venues, arguing they lack intensity and should be reserved for playoff and bowl games, advocating for more home-field games to preserve competition energy. The episode heavily criticizes Florida State’s performance under Mike Norvell, calling it a sign of program decline and a failure to compete at a top-tier level. Memphis and UNLV are highlighted as standout teams, with praise for Charles Huff’s leadership and the team’s defensive dominance. TCU’s poor showing in the rain is condemned, and the hosts question the stability of their quarterback situation. The show also addresses the absurdity of the SEC threatening to expel LSU, calling it legally and practically unworkable. A major theme is the need to stop overreacting to poor performances, arguing that teams like CJ Bailey or TCU are unfairly judged. The hosts conclude by reinforcing that Week One is not a strong indicator of the season’s direction and that deeper, more meaningful games will define the rest of the year. The episode ends with a call for accountability in college football, urging coaches and institutions to take responsibility for their programs’ performance and direction.

We're almost double digits. We are nine shows old. I am Brandon Walker here in the Brandon Walker man cave down in my basement. New helmet alert. New helmet alert. As you can see, Iowa State's still there. Minnesota's still there. Albany's still there. Arizona State. But I would like to welcome the Roadrunners of UTSA to the helmet display. Yay. Okay. I really thought there would be a round of applause for UTSA. Um, Blutman. Yay. Meet, meet, meet, meet, meet, meet, meet, meet. Uh, so, so we have UTSA in the helmet rotation. Once again, if you would like your helmet to be displayed in the Brandon Walker College Football Show, just hit Blutman up and he will, um, facilitate, facilitate, facilitate said transaction. So, week zero has happened and this is, uh, going to be irregular, but I guess this is the first of our three episode, our three episodes a week shows, um, normally, our Monday show will be a transition from what we just saw to what we will see next week. That's what it will be tonight, but we don't have the Saturday reaction show that we normally will have a Saturday reaction show to, to handle some of the early reactions. And then we'll transition to Monday and Thursday will be a little bit more of a deep dive. And then you'll have interviews stuck on Thursday and everything to every interview we get, we're just going to put them on Thursdays. So Monday is always going to be about me and Blutman, um, taking what we learned, putting it, pushing it forward and going from there. And that's what we'll do tonight because we have week zero. We have your voicemails. We have a couple of are you seriouses to put out to teams. And then we have at the end of the show, me and Blutman are going to do a week one college football games draft. Why are we going to do this? To make a point. And the point is week one is terrible. Now, it's college football, so it's going to be great, and we're going to love it. But week two is loaded with Michigan, Oklahoma, with Ohio State, Texas. I believe Oklahoma State, Oregon. On and on and on, you've got great games in week two. Week one, for whatever reason, this year, kind of a dud for the matchup. So we're going to draft ten week one games, and let's see how bad it is by the time we get to nine or ten. So anyway, hey, Blutman. Hey, Brandon. Can't wait to talk ball with you today. You have 30 seconds, and I mean 30 seconds, to talk about your stupid-ass UCLA news that just dropped. 30 seconds. 30 seconds. The clock starts now. Thumbs up. Couldn't be more excited. Don't need 30 seconds. We're serious about our business now, as it was pointed out in the articles that I've dropped. They are in a financial deficit, and the path forward is not sustainable. Thank you for all your incompetence, Martin Jarmon. I am once again vindicated. You were a doofus, a bozo, terrible at your job. I wish you and your family the best. Time to get you out of there. Time to start being real serious. You're a bad guy. Lukey, can you bring up Ross Dellinger's tweet from earlier today? I didn't tell you to do this, but Dellinger had a tweet. We'll do a little bit of news before we get to everything that I want to say about Week Zero. LSU, of course, is doing the thing where they're trying to get these players eligible, and we got the five to play five, but it passed after these guys had already entered the NFL draft, and then they got cut, and now they want to go back, but SEC and Big Ten's not going to let them, so they had to go get a lawyer, and they had to go get a judge, and yada, yada, yada. The fight goes on, and this is the toughest language I've heard so far. Coach Ware says, Well, then don't fucking watch, Coach Ware. Take your punk ass on somewhere. Blutt's on the show. Ross Dellinger says, Now, there's never going to be a world where the SEC expels LSU from the conference. However, I don't think I've ever heard of it. I don't think I've ever heard of it. I don't think I've ever heard of an SEC or a conference threatening to expel one of those teams. I've never heard of that even coming up in the lexicon saying, Hey, by the way, if you don't act right, am I still on, by the way? Am I good? Yeah, you're good. Yeah, my camera overwhelmed the system here and was giving me a question if I wanted to buy another ad blocker for the camera. I don't at all. Anyway, so LSU is in a point where the SEC is blusterous. They're blustering and they're pumping their chest out and they're saying, You better not or we're going to get you out. Now, this is the toughest language I have heard so far. And I do wonder if this is the end of the road, if this is where the SEC finally tells LSU, Fucking don't do it. Don't fucking do it or we're going to really go crazy. I don't know how LSU responds to this because legally, I'm not sure how the SEC could pull that off. But I guess it's not the SEC and Greg Sankey that's saying it. It's the other institution. It's the other institutions and the other schools that are finally just stomping their feet and saying, Stop fucking around down there. Let's play ball. What did you make of it, Liam? I kind of love it. I love putting the foot down. I love putting some real meaning behind the words and not just blank statements that have no substance behind it. I like this move. I don't want to see LSU in the Sun Belt or the Conference USA one day. So you better listen to your peers and get real serious about this or else you're going to be in trouble. You're going to have to put your feet down and kick them in the butt. That's no fun. The SEC trying to kick LSU out for trying to play a couple of extra players would be the longest lawsuit in the history of organized sports. It would drag on for 15 to 20 years. It would be the longest ordeal you have ever seen. And hopefully, I hope we get to the point where LSU decides it's not worth it. These players we're adding are not that big of a deal to our overall plans. I will say the more I've thought about it, these players, these players, if they started college now, would have five years to play five, right? And the announcement of five years to play five happened after they had already declared for the draft. Is it that big of a sin that they want to get back in and take their fifth year when other players going forward will? That's a question for you, Blevin. Oh, I will. You thought that was rhetorical? Yeah, a bit. Yeah, like things happen, timelines happen, everything. That's the way of the road. Sorry, you've already tried to play. I mean, we got the kid Piper and who led the Buccaneers and sacks in the preseason. You're good enough at that level to at least maybe get a roster spot. Not maybe it's not on Tampa Bay. Maybe it's somewhere else. But again, go play in the UFO. Go play in the CFL. There are plenty of opportunities to carve your own path and make some money along the way. Going back to college will never compute in my brain after you've already worn an NFL jersey that your parents now own. Yeah, tough to say. You said the kitty. Good job. All right, here we go. So we've got we got my week zero thoughts and I'm going to go fast. I have seven thoughts. But when I get to the end of my seven thoughts, if you would like to add anything or I might just give you a little bit, I wouldn't say rapid reaction. Lukey, it's just a reaction at this point. The rapid reactions will be on Saturday night. Week zero. The number one thing that stood out to me was on a day we had Florida State playing and on a day we had Virginia playing NC State a conference game on the day we had. TCU and UNC, two power four teams playing the most impressive operation, the most impressive matchup, the best looking two teams were Memphis and UNLV. And I think that says a lot about where we are in college football. I think it's a very good thing that in this world of the transfer portal and NIL, we all have sounded the alarm bells. Oh, this will kill the little teams. This will kill a group of six. They'll always get picked over. And yet. Outside of Virginia and the way they really looked, the two best teams I saw were Memphis and UNLV. Memphis and UNLV was a fantastic football game, a fantastic scene. They had Elvis coming out. You had good quarterback play. from Memphis you had good quarterback play out of Jackson Arnold now the defense for Memphis just got better and better and better as the game went on you saw athletes all over the field like if this is the if this is what we see out of the group of six because of NIL and transfer portal I think we're in a good spot I thought that was really really really good uh Squala says UNLV did not look good what I can't help you guys be smarter if you didn't watch that game and say these are two good teams playing then I can't help you go watch wake up Mincy now take your stupid ass over there because this was these were two good teams and this was a great game I thought it was a fantastic week zero game the best week zero game I can remember in recent years and Memphis comes out of there winning it they'll beat the crap out of Arkansas State this week and then go they'll go to Boise State in a couple of weeks what did you think uh what do you think about the whole of not just Memphis's performance not UNLV but the whole of that game Fletman the whole of that game is it was a spectacle where both teams understood in a week zero game that they needed to show up there was no room to be rusty while UNLV was a bit I'll get into that but both of them knew that that was an impromptu kind of playoff playing game that could it be at the end of the year UNLV to me the issue was it was too much of the past where they're shooting themselves in the foot with constant mistakes their offensive line got absolutely ravaged in the second half I really don't understand why they stopped getting Jay and Thomas the ball they abandoned the run game they abandoned the run game they abandoned the run game they abandoned the run game uh poor Jackson Arnold was on on his back every other play in the late third and fourth quarter but I mean that was a great college football game from start to finish was it perfect no is college football perfect no Charles Huff will be at a powerful school next year probably an SEC one I think he is a legit dude in the coaching ranks um he kind of won a lot of fans at the end when they asked him you know what'd you make of that and he said you know we don't do ice cream here we don't do fun things we get you ready for ball we want guys who are ready for ball Charles Huff will be a big-time college football coach next year he's a he's a big-time college football coach now he's just on his way up and Memphis has turned into a program they're so good at getting talent and they're so good at showcasing talent doesn't really matter who their coach is they just give a guy an opportunity to come in and build a roster and he does it and then he moves on to the next place uh but Charles Huff is a dude I still think Dan Mullins probably got a number four job next year too um so there's that the one last guy I want to shout out from that game Marcus Stokes I wish you know going back a couple years ago and let me make sure Blutman because you're you've got your heir to the grindstone a little bit better than me hi Roughnecks we'll be right back after this word from our sponsor football is back and with DraftKings that he he was on a video and he rapped lyrics to a song and kept going when he should have stopped it was that his crime the old Ben Metz he got Ben Metz right and and I and I really I don't know when his when his when it happened I don't know I I wasn't really paying attention enough to to have caught that over my radar I wish more media people including myself would have stood up and said are we really gonna throw this kid's career away because he made an honest stupid mistake like we've seen guys make that mistake it's it's a it's a damn mistake Charles Huff and and Memphis welcoming it welcome him in after the stop at West Florida and he is on the way to putting his career back together he's having the career he was going to have to begin with he's a very good quarterback I thought he was very tough the other day exactly what Memphis needs shout out to him shout out to that uh shout to that player right there um number three I thought Virginia was the best individual team that we saw I really kind of regret last week when I said Virginia's underrated people are overlooking them not going harder in the paint because they look so impressive now NC State's got their own issues CJ Bailey we're still waiting on the breakout they have no weapons nothing around him they lost every good player to transfer seemingly and he just isn't becoming that guy at NC State that man said put them on the back burner they walked into Virginia Virginia just knocked them around the yard for three and three and a half four quarters just knocked them all around passed the ball 11 times ran the ball down their throat Bo Pribula was fantastic Virginia is a top 20 team in this country they're not a top 25 team they're a top 20 team in this country I think they are very very very very good number three Florida State I didn't watch Florida State live I was out to dinner with my family I caught up and caught the Virginia the Florida State replay yesterday afternoon when I got home from vacation and I knew what the sequence of the game I knew that it was 10-7 for a while I knew going in but it was still so underwhelming and I I just in this day and age I don't know how they started another season with Mike Norvell as the coach I don't know how they started another season with him on the sideline after getting to a point where you could very reasonably fire him and people will say well they can't afford to fire him in this day and age you can't afford not to fire him if you've got a coach that's holding you back and you can't compete at this level right now you're Florida State you should be a top 10 to 15 name in the sport every single year you can't afford not to make a bold move and the fact they didn't make a move is so embarrassing to me it's so awful does Florida State depress you like it depresses me Liam Blutman yeah of course it's a friend they are a sad program to watch that game should have been 17 14 I believe if they didn't drop the touchdown on the halfback pass I will never I I ranted about this last year when we were fighting with t-bob God bless t-bob we were fighting about him but the LSU and the Brian Kelly and the bio and the money and all of a sudden LSU's rich all of a sudden has all the money you can find the money money is endless the money's there guys the money will always be there yes setting your program back by not making by not cutting what needs to be cut will never work sure maybe you'll want to pay Norvell his money now well this year's gone next year's gone the year after that could be gone the the longer you wait the longer away you are and at some point you truly get into a rut the job becomes even more attractive you're just setting yourself up for failure down the road I don't get it's malpractice they went into the season with them it looked like same old Florida State whoop they do number five wait wait sorry sorry one last thought he went into a make or break season with Ashton Daniels as his QB one and this is Florida State that's the man you want to lead your program when I was going when I was growing up in the in the 90s the 90s of 2000 Florida State was cutthroat about their program they were going out and getting dudes and they were just pushing everybody around and they were just unbelievable and then they had the resurgence with Jimbo in the year in 2013 and then they had the the year a couple years ago but now how have they descended into me mediocrity so fast it's so depressing and I don't want to see Florida State like this Florida State is a team that I want to see good I don't generally subscribe to the theory oh college football is better when this team is good because well is fine regardless but I like seeing Florida State good I like seeing Miami good I like seeing those Florida teams really good and when I saw Saturday night was so goddamn depressing all right number five USC fans I don't know if you've seen this guy from outkick that I was like this you know I had USC or the West Coast football as losers of the week because of the crowd at USC and that's fine it's been hammered over and over and over it's an embarrassing crowd but this this outkick guy was like dude it was hot you would never see this guy you would never see this guy ever I'll pay you money to go to a hot game you'll never do it like I get sicker than anybody in the world in hot weather I've been to more hot games in Starkville Mississippi I've seen him play Memphis in 102 degree weather I've seen him play in freezing spitting rain like it's college football if that's your team go watch them but USC fans it's not that the rest of the country is laughing at you it's not that we're poking fun of you and I know you get defensive about this crowd it's the fact that it just sucks you're a top 10 to 15 brand in this country the fight on the Trojan everything we all grew up with a dominant USC in the Coliseum full and that's where that should be the capital of West Coast football the fact that you've got top 15 team now and you don't act like you can be the capital of West Coast football then you act like an also ran and you act like it's beneath you to go to a college football game it just sucks it sucks because the rest of us want it you won't do it you won't support it because it's 92 degrees guess what it's going to be in Texas and Louisiana and Alabama and Mississippi and Georgia and everywhere this weekend and there will be a full capacity and every single one of them and they don't have as good a team as you got it sucks number six that's enough Ireland I'm done Ireland. Um, if they're not going to turn off the rain button, it's, it was cute. One year I've seen enough sideline reporters learning how to pour the perfect pint of Guinness. I don't give a fuck anymore. We it's ugly football. It's terrible football. It ruins one team season. Whoever loses it, it ruins their season. TCU. I don't envy them right now. North Carolina. I will say, you know, I was, I kind of liked seeing Belichick happy at the end of that game. I kind of liked, uh, him signaling first down the pass rush is nasty. I am reevaluating how I feel about North Carolina offense has a ways to go, but man at defense in that past rush were great, but TCU gross, gross. Number seven, my last take on week zero, and then I'll open it up to see if he has to take the other day in the TCU North Carolina game, a running back out of first down. He stood up pointed towards the end zone, rubbed his nose and pointed first down the ref through a 15 yard penalty. I called it the worst call I've ever seen here in week one. It's the worst call of the season in week one to which I had the, uh, the rules committee on Twitter. They're like, well, actually, um, they, um, they wrote in the rules this year. You can't do that. So that's a good call. That's a really good call. I'm going to call it a day. I'm going to call. Then rewrite the fucking rule. I don't know what piece of shit decided if he rubs his nose and points that way, we're going to penalize in 15 years. Somebody go back with an eraser, go the rule book and scratch that shit out. That's ridiculous. That is absolutely ridiculous, especially for our damn ref crew who missed four spots in the final five spots of the game. They were missing spots all day, but they saw this. How are you doing? I'm actually doing pretty good. I'm going to, I'm going to, um, I'm going to, I'm going to read an ad now and then I'll be all my week zero thoughts. All right, Chad, I want to talk to you guys. I want to talk to you guys right now. We have had, let me see if I can get them. Josh Pate, Tim Fornelli, Sean McDonough, Paul Pollock, Tom McShay. Who am I missing? That's why you're the best in the business, Liam. Whoever I'm missing, I apologize to you. Andy Staples. Thank you very much. We've had those guests. Here's our ninth show. We don't have a guest tonight. I would like to say to you, Chad, this is your chance. If you're listening on the podcast, thank you. If you're watching on YouTube, please like and subscribe. We've got to get those subscribers up to a hundred. John Gruden. Yes. So my question to you, Chad, is who can I get? Who do you want to see as a guest? An actual guest on the show. Don't just say, uh, you know, titties McGillicuddy. Don't just say, Oh, I'll get, get some big titties and a big pussy. I don't, I don't want that. Give me people like a big pussy. Anyway. Um, who do you want as a guest? Get Herb Street. I think he might be mad at me that I made fun of his dog. See, he has ghosted us so far. Um, I think he heard that. I, yeah, yeah. Um, let's see. Uh, Herbie, uncle Vern, big cat, Patton McAfee. Oh, I bet I can get McAfee, but, uh, but Elliot, um, mints, mints, mints. Okay. Smoot, Tebow, Taylor Mathis, Anna Montoya. I, um, wow. It's going very fast. Paul Pastor, Dan Patrick. That would be very good. I didn't really think of how fast this would go. Jimbo Fisher, Hockey McHoggerton, Rich Eisen. Yeah. Yeah. ESPN's Rich Eisen apparently. I didn't know guys. I had no idea. I'm on vacation in door County. I do the damn thing. Cause Bobby bones is a great human being likes me. And he gave me the opportunity to be on the Rich Eisen show the other day. Shout out to him. Um, I thought I was on the NFL network or something. I had no idea. Rich Eisen was affiliated with, with the ESPN. I still would have done it. It's not like, like Dan and Dave aren't going to tell me not to do it. Uh, but I was like, I did it. And an hour later I see ESPN tweets me out. I'm like, what? Whoa. And, and I, I, I'd never seen my name next to the letters ESPN. Um, so I don't know, probably should have checked, but I just never even thought about it. Never even thought about it. Um, now the green Greg. Yeah. Okay. Well, some of you think you're funnier than you really are. Um, that was a, that was a pointless, it was pointless to ask the chat. I would like some real answers, but, uh, some of you think you're funny. All right, we move on. So Blumman, what do you think about, uh, what, what do you think about week zero? You got anything that I didn't add? I mean, to really pile onto the whole Ireland stick that is so outplayed that only T Bob, only T Bob likes it. Um, let, let's go through the records of the, of this game. 2022, Nebraska blew that game. Shout the onside kick. They ended up going four and eight 2023 Navy gets smoked by Notre Dame. They went five games, Florida state, the collapse begins in Dublin. They go two and 10 after it. And then 2025 Kansas state go six and six after it. They were never the same. All these teams, the jet lagging and all this and that. Thank goodness that UNC and TCU both have gimme's in week one and we'll get back to that. Um, so I think that's going to get back on track there, but this thing does not set you up for success down the road at all. I don't understand as a player, a coach, a fan, why you would want to partake in this game aside from, I guess, money. It doesn't make sense to me. There's nothing about this that is appealing. TCU needed a get right game, get in a good rhythm immediately. Instead, Jade and Craig is probably the least confident quarterback in football right now, after what happened on Saturday, so I've got an, are you, are you sure Liam? I told you to bring an, are you sure? Are you ready? I am. I would like to speak to the good fans of Texas Christian university. Are you guys sure you're okay with Josh Hoover leaving? Cause you spent all summer telling us he turns the ball over too much. He makes too many mistakes. We're going to be fine. We have a smart Harvard grad. Uh, we're going to, we're going to be great. We're going to be incredible. Uh, Josh Hoover was a turnover. Machine. He, you couldn't trust him. He couldn't do this. Now he's off to captain or to quarterback the, uh, 16, no national champs. And you guys are stuck with a quarterback who couldn't get it done against North Carolina. TCU. If I asked you a week ago, you were sure you were going to be okay with Jade and Craig. You were sure you were going to be okay without Josh Hoover. You were sure he was overrated. Are you still sure about that? TCU fans? That's just me talking to you. It's it's the national championship game and the biggest fluke of all time. I said, guys, you should be excited. I'd be excited if my team got to the national title game, but you were, you were a seven and five team that somehow went 12 and one. It was, it was beyond all understanding how that TCU team actually went to the national championship game. You're coming back to earth soon. You guys said, no, you're not coming back to earth. You came back to earth and now you're, you're not only on earth, you might be digging and it's, it's a little tough. So are you sure you were right? Are you sure you're okay without Josh Hoover? Because I just watched you play. And the answer is no, not even a little bit. So Blutman, what is your, are you sure? I mean, I'm going to hit you with an impromptu one right now that I just thought of before we get into that one. Sure. Brown Walker, are you sure an interception is bad is as bad as people make it out to be? Should we start doing a better job of showing drives ending and punts? That's as bad as an interception wow so you want to think about that if a guy if a guy runs the 91st best offense and and and has has a you know a punt percentage that's pretty high but then a another guy throws for more yards but throws for like and the first guy throws for six picks in a season and the other guy throws a ton of yards and touchdowns but throws 15 picks we assume the guy threw 15 picks as a worst quarterback when in fact he's the one pushing the ball down the field the first guy can't do it he's taking risks he's a gunslinger he's throwing the ball around the yard he's trying to move your offense downfield he's putting you in a position to score points i'm going to tell you this right now if tcu had a quarterback on saturday that's willing to throw 20 interceptions in a season they would have won that football game instead they just punted a bunch think about that yeah fair enough uh now what's your are you sure brown walker are missouri are missouri tiger fans sure that austin simmons is the heir apparent and is so much better than bow perbula slim tebow who ran all over the yard on saturday against nc state who's expected to have a pretty stout defense are they sure that austin simmons is the answer after austin simmons did nothing last year except lose his job right off rip are they sure that this path with the lefty is always going to be better than bow perbula you know what bro perbula is going to give you are they sure yeah um i said i said this uh over the summer missouri fans moved on from bow perbula awful fast but before he got hurt last year he was really good he had 11 touchdowns nine interceptions the numbers weren't great but he was also on an offense with two elite running backs it was never going to be great they were always going to be a ground and pound team and with his legs they were even more ground and pound i think they would have been better off bringing perbula back and not signing up for the next season i think they're awesome simmons because austin simmons all he did was as soon as he got the job he lost it three weeks so i i'm i'm with you missouri fans will argue up and down perbula can't throw he can't throw he can't throw well if he's going to run for 150 yards a game and he's going to throw for another 150 i think i can take that i i think i can handle it i think perbula is going to win this divorce because i don't think austin simmons is a guy that you're going to be able to trust your program with it missouri and i don't know why they did it all right i'm going to get to your voicemails in a what to tell you he was a guest on my my podcast back in the day full circle shayhan jay roger yeah paul feinbaum i love shayhan shayhan jay roger great guy um all right voicemails luki don't suck tonight here we go voicemail drafting we're drafting after the voicemails oh okay is that okay yeah yeah no no i just got confused by the order is it i'm sorry you hosted or am i hosting i was making sure you were on top of everything ella langley yeah shane gillis is a good suggestion actually i wrote down shane gillis also wrote down little wayne imagine little wayne on here i guess i'm the only one okay uh are you aware of little wayne blumman he's a rapper yeah yeah though yeah yeah what you want me to say if i showed you a picture of little wayne would you know it was little wayne yeah i know who lil wayne is okay i i love his rapography boy oh boy first voicemail please uh luki blutman hey what's up brandon first time long time i just wanted to ask what you think will be the biggest overreaction from week zero it feels to me like it'll be cj bailey being bad um i feel like it was just like a bad week for him but uh let me know okay so how do you tell the biggest overreaction from week zero is the biggest overreaction when you think it's not an overreaction at all and when i watched cj bailey play i said you know what god he is bad he is awful this is terrible which might tells me the fact that i'm not an overreactor i'm not an overreactor i knew it in my plums and in my bones that that might be the biggest overreaction um cj bailey has never broken through to the level people think he should break through to but he he hasn't just been outright bad and the other day he was outright terrible so that's actually a good suggestion as the biggest overreaction of week zero i will say you know i just did it but there's a chance tcu can make their performance in week zero an overreaction there's a chance that north carolina won if jayden and craig had thrown that ball had run that ball on fourth and two they'd probably lose so you know it's a razor thin margin um and maybe maybe the biggest overreaction could be that florida state is still dead that that whatever that was the other day is indicative of a program that has just died on the vine maybe they they turn it around and get right i don't know good question i don't know but i think it's a good question i think it's a good question i appreciate that let's go with uh voicemail number two man is chapel bill back or is tcu dog shit um for chapel bill to be back chapel bill would have needed to be here in the first place you know he never arrived last year as a big-time coach in college football um tcu was dog shit the other day tcu was dog shit the other day uh i don't think sonny dykes is a bad coach i'll give him a week or two to see if he can't put it back together but tcu was 100 dog shit in ireland in the rain after a 10-hour flight sometime maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe there's reasons they played bad but yeah they might be dog shit they might be dog shit they might be dog shit blumman do you think they might be dog shit from what i saw on saturday there is nothing that could possibly make me want to invest in that program going forward for the next three months voicemail number three hey brandon it's uh coach larry from maine big fan of the show uh my question is if florida state gets their ass kicked by smu next monday do you think they fire norvell the next day or do you think they they hold on to them uh i me personally i think they fire them especially after yesterday's piss poor week zero performance again new mexico state but we'd love to hear your thoughts thanks which brings me back to my original point if they get blown out by smu and they fire him on the tuesday after week one why in the hell did they start the season with it they're they're waiting for an excuse to fire him now so why set your program back another year another cycle another everything by bringing back a guy you knew you were getting prepared to fire i i don't understand it if smu beats florida by more than 24 points i don't think mike norvell coaches another game after that but You know what? Strange things happen. And am I going to rule out Florida State beating SMU? No, I'm not going to do it. But if he gets killed, yeah, I could see him never coaching a game again. Voicemail number four, please. What's up, Brandon? Longtime listener here. Last year you gave out Virginia as your best over-under team, picking the over for them. I was a little surprised that you weren't on them again this year due to their schedule. I thought that they had the most dominant week zero performance. Just wanted you to talk about them and their chances to go back to the ACC championship game. Thank you. I appreciate you watching and listening. I was on them. I did say they're very underrated. I did say this is a team that won 11 games last year and nobody acts like it. I did say the quarterback is good. I did say he was going to a place. So I don't know what you heard that told you I wasn't on them. I was absolutely all over Virginia coming into this season, all over them. Voicemail number five, please. Hey, B-Walk, this is Trey from Memphis, but I'm coming to you live from Las Vegas where Huff Daddy and the Tigs just knocked off Mullen and the running Rebs. Is Memphis now your clear favorite for the college football playoff out of the group of six, or is their road schedule just too much? And secondly, does that Memphis defensive line domination in the second half say more about that unit moving forward and what they might be able to do? Or struggles around the UNLV offensive line? I'll hang up and listen. No, I think it says everything about Memphis. Charles Huff was on web this morning, and he said when he went to the locker room at halftime, he said, we prepare for four quarters. You're tougher than them. Go out and push them around. That's exactly what they did in the second half. The defense pushed them around. So I think the Memphis defense is great. I can't say they're the favorite right now for the group of five spot, considering a group of six spot, considering they have to go to Boise State next week. This road schedule, and Liam pointed out this morning, they play at South Florida. They play at Tulane. They play at Boise State. They've already won at UNLV. They have five really tough road games, and it's hard to install them as the favorite when the schedule is that daunting. Boise State, I assume, will lose to Oregon, and then you're going to have the game against Memphis. I think whoever wins that game is in a great spot, but I can't install them as the favorite over Boise State right now. I think. I think they are the most talented group of six team. Again, obviously, just comes down to schedule. Stokes is only going to get better as the year goes on. The offense is only going to be more fluid as the year goes on. I thought something that they did was the wide stacking opens a lot of things up at the group of six level where the players are just not as good, and speed is really going to be a massive factor, and that small little talent gap, is going to be so crucial in the wide stack when you're layering and everything. I thought that was a genius, genius stuff from their OC. All right, let's go to Hogger McHawksky. We should go to subscriber-only mode for chat. You know what? That might be a good idea. So, what have you got for next voicemail, please? Brandon, what do you think about Bill Belichick this weekend getting that big win? Fun fact, we invited Petrino's last two stops prior to UNC. His head coach was fired in the middle of the year. I thought for sure he was going to be 3-for-3, the UC-UNC building off this and having a great year, or was it fool's gold because TCU had a little bit of locker room problems? Love to hear from you. Thanks. Yeah, could be a little bit of fool's gold. Also, Lukey, let's make sure, let's just try, I told you to pick a bunch of voicemails, let's try not to have some repetitive ones here. But Bobby Petrino as all-time interim coach is pretty fantastic. Just the fact that he'll go to a place and immediately the coach gets fired, so he's the interim coach. I want him to interim coach every program in the country. In fact, I would like for him to go to Florida State and when Norvell gets fired. I would like for Bobby Petrino to interim coach five teams this year. That's what I want. Next voicemail, please. Hey, Brandon Walker. First of all, hail State, go Dawgs. Secondly, week zero coming to a close, what do we think about the North Dakota State guys over there? They seem to be pretty brilliant. They lead against Jackson State. They might be a force to be reckoned with this season coming into the FBS. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks. Nobody has been on the North Dakota State wagon, quite like Liam Blutman. He will answer this question. Thank you, Brandon Walker. So I don't know if you saw this. Saturday morning I did a little flip-flop ski with my playoff, and instead of taking Memphis to make the playoff, I chose North Dakota State. I went with the long shot North Dakota State to make the playoff. I think the schedule is very manageable in year one. And I got a lot of flack for it. People kept telling me, Blutman, this is crazy. This is ludicrous. They have so many question marks. Even their head coach is saying they've got question marks. Brandon Walker, I'm going to ask you a question right now. What team at the group of six level does not have question marks coming into this season? These are questions that are eventually going to be answered and they answered them on opening night with the resounding dominant win over a team that will compete for their conference title game. Nathan. Nathan Hayes was very good in his first game. They threw the ball very effectively. They're tight and Kessel is a demon. Their run game is always going to be there. That's going to wrap it up. I'll wrap it up fine. But yeah, North Dakota State will always be a force to be reckoned with. College football season is finally here. Season is underway. And is there a better place in this world, Liam Blutman, to watch a game, to be invested in a game, to enjoy a game? Is there a better place in Las Vegas, Nevada? Nope. No better place to watch college football from opening kickoff to rivalry weekends. You get you a place out there. You can be in a pool, you can be in a restaurant, you can be anywhere. They've got so many places, so many great, great, great, great venues to watch the college football games. Just really get out there, lay some bets down, do what you got to do and just have fun. It's the ultimate getaway weekend for the boys. They want to go out to Vegas, get the giant screen, just watch a ton, a ton, a ton of games. It is a crazy great place because football doesn't just end in Vegas. It's here all season long from opening kickoff through the CFP National Championship. No better place to spend your Saturdays. That's right. We're going to be we're going to be crowning a champion in Las Vegas this year. Nobody's more Las Vegas than you, Liam. Thank you, Brown Walker. I'm as Vegas as it gets. I I'm just another weird kid from Vegas. College football is at its best in Las Vegas. So check out college football. Check out Las Vegas. Visit Las Vegas dot com. All right. So let's do a couple more voicemails. And, you know, it's week zero. So we haven't had the most exciting, but we'll see what we're going to hone in on voicemails and get them figured out and get them right for you guys. So go with go with a voicemail one more time. Hey, Brandon, Marshall is going to upset Penn State week one. Marshall is going to upset Penn State week one now before we get into our draft. Somebody is getting upset week one. I believe there's there's just a preposterous amount of spreads that are over seven. And just it's like there's not many games that are there are close spreads this weekend and count them on one hand, there's not a lot of there's not a lot of ranked on ranked action, it's just one of those weak ones isn't great. But somebody out there who is sleeping through week one, somebody out there who thinks everything is fine, their world's going to end Saturday. So knowing that knowing we're likely to see that I don't hate Penn State is the choice there while I think their roster is solid. It's not exactly right. Your mom and tell them about the dominant Penn State is not it's not that it's just a continuation of Iowa State, some veteran guys. And a lot of people are picking them to make the playoffs solely because of their schedule. But what if a team coming in with a new coach, a new quarterback, everybody thinks they're going to be good because their schedule just sleepwalks and gets beaten week one. I don't think that's the worst thing I've heard. So I don't know. What do you think about that, Liam? I'm just I'm really just thinking more about it. Like Marshall does have the quarterback. They are able to do a few years ago against Notre Dame, but it really happened from great defensive play in the secondary that I wouldn't wish this on Connor Griffin. Well, I would I 100 percent what I would really enjoy it. I've had to. Hey, you know what? The teams I've had to see my team lose to since I've been to Barstool, y'all, some of y'all can be humbled around here, OK, some of y'all be humble real quick. So I'm not going to sit here and cry if somebody loses to Marshall. All right. You want to draft? You want to draft our our top ten week one games? I cannot wait to see how this pants. So I was generally wrote down eleven games that I think are decent. But if I had to say in week one, how many games are good? Like, how many games are good? How many games are good? Three. I was going to say four. And I'm stretching it when I get to the fifth one. And actually, I might be sure because I got Wisconsin Notre Dame in that group. And there's no stretch. That might be a stretch game, but I think Ole Miss, Louisville, LSU, Clemson, Baylor-Auburn are good games. Am I stretching one? Is Baylor-Auburn a stretch? Anyway, let's draft. Let's draft. So it's going to be five picks for you, five picks for me. And the point we're going to be making here is it's week one. How deep does this week go with good games? The number one pick, Liam, to earn the number one. Yeah. You want to go first? No, no. I didn't know you were going to do it and earn it. Who's going to go first? It's your show. All right. Stripe side up or naked side up? You ready? Naked. Stripes. Okay. Okay. That was just as good as flipping a coin. It was. That was really good. Yeah. You flipped that really, really smooth. That was a good flip, huh? Probably a 15-yard penalty. Look at that. Stripes up again. Wait. This might be a trick ball. It's a rigged ball. Yeah. Wait a minute. I think the laces are making it come up. Nope. There we go. All right. I'll pick first. You, of course, pick second and third. Number one pick, the game of the week. The game that I think is a fantastic game, and not just because I'm praying for an upset here. It's Ole Miss-Louisville. I think this is a great game. I think Ole Miss has a lot, a lot, a lot to be excited about. Maybe the best quarterback in the country. Maybe the best running back in the country if Ahmad Hardy doesn't play. That being said. New coach. New offensive scheme. New a lot of things. They're going to Nashville. Louisville is three hours north of Nashville. Louisville, good coach. New quarterback. Lots of like about that Louisville team, too. I think this is a classic, great intra-conference, week one matchup. This is clearly the number one game of the week to me. That is my number one pick. Couldn't agree more. The one distasting thing I have for it. It's it's in Nashville. It's at the Titans stadium. We could stop doing this neutral site site stuff. I'm actually sick and tired of it. This is something I meant to bring up when you were doing your week zero rapid reaction. Yeah. Where these games are so watered down. You mentioned Baylor Auburn. That's in Atlanta. Let's get the full-on effect. We saw how much it meant to end DSU for the home game. You only wasn't a great environment, but like having that juicy. It's UVA is the perfect example. Having that game on campus. That game was supposed to be in Brazil, brother. Think the heavens. It wasn't. These games should all be on campus. Leave the neutral site for the playoff and bowl games. Leave it for December and January. It's crazy. All right. The number two pick and then number three pick. Go to Liam Blutman. Go. The number two pick. I'll use it on the potential that this could be Clemson LSU and Death Valley. It could be a great. Lane Kiffin masterclass. A great welcome back to the top. Sam Leavitt. A great introduction to Clemson's quarterback. Vazina. Maybe he's a stud all of a sudden. Maybe we're all silly and buying back in on Clemson. It's what that could be. Tiger Stadium. Nighttime electric. I don't know why you don't mention UCLA Cal when you were mentioning good games this week. You could make an argument. It is. I mean, you don't have to make the argument. It is so clearly a top three game this week. I hate that I have to do it as a fan. It's both sides. It's UCLA's bright new future. You would think in Cal's bright new future. You would think the Lou Poyer, the Chesney era, both fan bases are so excited about what is on the horizon. Both of them think they are confidently going to win this game and roll into a great season because of it. It is. It is a rivalry. It is a rivalry renewed in a sense. I personally and UCLA fans don't see the rivalry the same way that Cal fans do, but it's going to be a packed stadium in Berkeley. I can't wait for it. That is one of the best games of the weekend. I can't tell who you picked. Did you pick both of them? I picked. Yeah, that was my two and my three. Two was LSU Clemson and three was UCLA Cal. Yes. By the way, it's right there, dude. I just didn't get to that side of the. It's right there. I wrote down UCLA Cal. Don't act like I didn't write down UCLA Cal. You're sensitive about Mississippi State, too. It's right there. I'm not sensitive about Mississippi State. Okay, dude. Did anything happen over the weekend we haven't talked about? Who are you talking to? You're talking to me? Yeah, I'm talking. Yeah, anything on Twitter? You're making fun of me? The Mississippi State used? You just paid for our hype videos? I'm not making fun of you. I had your back immediately on that. Yeah, you're bringing it here in front of God and everybody? We're doing a show. Make sure I like the stream. Number three pick. God, it's our number four pick. Excuse me. It's already bleak. Oh, God. I'm going to do it. G6 playoff contender. National title contender. Oregon, Boise State. A couple years ago, this was a 34-31 game. Oregon was, I think Oregon ended up 12-0, the number one team in the country going to the playoff. And Boise State was right there with them. It was in a game that was 34-31. I'm just going to bank. Maybe we get some magic like that again. It's not a great fourth best game of opening weekend. And number five. Give me Wisconsin. Notre Dame. Just the uniform combination is going to be excellent. I know you don't like the neutral field. When it's something like Lambeau, when it's something like when it's a place that has personality and history of its own, like Lambeau, I like it. When it's, you know, a soulless place like Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for Auburn-Baylor, I get it. I get the point. It's too neutral. But for Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Lambeau just feels awesome. It feels big. So give me that. I'll take Boise State, Oregon, Wisconsin, Notre Dame. That's picks four and five. Yeah, I can't hate Notre Dame, Wisconsin with how much those fan bases just hunger for football Lambeau. I can't hate that. It's going to be a great scene. It's going to be an incredible scene. Yeah, it would hit with a little snow too. A little snow on the field would be great. Obviously, probably not happening in early September. Was this the fifth pick? No, six. The sixth pick. Oh, my gosh. I guess by default, Baylor-Auburn. Yeah. EJ Lagway, maybe he's back. Dave Aranda coaching for his job this season, you would think. This is another, Blutman, this is another team like Penn State. Auburn fans are just assuming they're walking in this game and winning. They just are. With the new coach, with the new quarterback, they just assume, well, all's right in the world. We're good again. And I don't know if there's anything guaranteed with this one at all. If they were to show up and Alex Gullis loses his first game. I mean, Gullis is my college football doppelganger. I got a root for him. I'm really hoping he gets that win. Jared Smith off the edge. I'm very, very excited to watch him for Auburn. I think by default, you have to put that game there. And then this is really where it's. Yeah, we're fighting tooth and nail, breaking each other's teeth, trying to figure out what to do here. I've got a series of ways to go. I think I don't want to do it. I think just have to do UNLV at Hawaii late night on the island. Two teams that start 0 and 1 and already it's week one and both of them need a bounce back win already. It's a low point spread. All's go with that game. Excuse me, Liam. As a new as a new hype video, hit the new hype video. As a new hype video, hit the hit the timeline. No. No. As a new as a new hype video, hit the timeline. No way. Oh. Huh. Huh. I haven't. Let's see. I don't want to play any music. Let me tell you something. I'm from West Point, Mississippi. Clay County. One county below us is Knoxville County, Macon, Mississippi. Some great players have come from Knoxville County over the years. Jeffrey Simmons is probably the greatest. But right now. Well, you did it. Look at that. All you got to do is whine like a bitch. That's OK. Pause. Pause. All you got to do is cry like a little bitch. And then you get what you want. That's all you have to do. All right. That'd be a lesson to all of you. We're down. We're down to picks. Eight and nine for me. God. Well, there's four options here. We're going to pick three of them. God. You know what? Let me. Let me believe in Florida State to have one punch in their system. Last year, they weren't good. But they knocked out Alabama in week one. They just knocked them out. Just said right across the jaw. I said, fuck you. You're going down. What if they did the same thing? thing to SMU huh I'm blooming SMU walking in here got the chest out made the playoff a couple years ago think they're gonna make the playoff this year what if Florida State just just popped them on the chin how about that that's my pick number eight and then my ninth pick leaving you to separate the shit from the shit bad thing is I have a layup for the 10th pick I'm gonna go I'm gonna I'm gonna cheat a little bit I'm gonna go Miami Stanford because I'm excited to see Mensa I'm just excited to see Miami I'm excited to see the new version of Miami so I'm not getting two good teams there but I am getting one national title contender that I want to see I want to see them flex their muscle and show if they're good okay so there you go that's my my picks are uh actually you do the 10th pick and then we'll I'll sum it up let me build off what you just picked real quick because you're talking about that that voicemail that said Marshall Penn State we're trying to figure out who's going to be sleepy Miami was sleepy at Cal a few years ago and I'm not I think Miami wins this game Hanley but trusted confidant our good friend Ebo Ebo already bet Stanford with the points in this game okay fair enough take no of that um like I said lay up for this one I'm surprised Northwestern's a 13 and a half point favorite here against number one team in the FCS South Dakota State of course the Dakota man like me is bringing this game up uh that that's the best team in the FCS playing the team that normally are playing the caliber of a poem that normally wouldn't want to fight the North and South Dakota States in the world South Dakota State had a laugher they already played a game against Stetson I think scored 80 ran the ball all over the field didn't he throw they've got a demon at quarterback Chase Mason let's keep tabs on that one Griffin Wildey wide receiver Northwestern who the boys the jacks want this game badly so that's your pick uh your picks were um I had Ole Miss Louisville you had LSU Clemson and UCLA Cal I had Boise State Oregon and Wisconsin Notre Dame you had Baylor Auburn and UNLV Hawaii I had um where's eight Florida State SMU Miami Stanford you had Northwestern South Dakota State that's me which means Tulane Duke not picked and Colorado Georgia Tech not picked yeah uh the only other ones on my list that weren't picked Liberty JMU and Toledo Michigan State could be one of the sneaky ones yeah exactly that's why I didn't do it Michigan State favored by nine against new look Toledo both teams knew we don't know what to expect but I mean that is another one to keep tabs on what an awful week one yeah it's bad it's good that it's college football it's good that we're gonna we're gonna watch for 12 hours and it's gonna be you know we're gonna be enthralled and everything I'm gonna be in Indiana Bloomington Indiana to start the day we're gonna be uh for with big noon kickoff there to do the barstool college football show week one welcoming Mike Kadick to the show um so excited about that um that's a big one uh but otherwise you know just like they're playing North Texas how do you get excited about some of these games the guys in chat that are saying the apple cup Washington's favored by like four touchdowns yeah yeah now Washington State does have a knack for making that game closer than you think whole new coaching staff whole new team um this episode is sponsored by blue chew guys what do women want and need they need stability reliability be her rock with blue chew they're Summary:
