WEEK 8 INSTANT REACTION: Texas Tops Ole Miss In Thriller | UCF Stuns BYU | Houston-Utah | MORE!
2h 10m 57s
The Cover 3 Podcast delivers a comprehensive analysis of college football’s Week 8 action, highlighting key matchups and their broader implications. Texas edged Ole Miss in a gritty, physical game, with strong defensive play and resilience despite key injuries, though the win is seen as a sign of consistency rather than dominance. Ole Miss struggled with injuries, poor late-game decisions, and a costly missed field goal, raising serious doubts about their ability to remain competitive. The season's volatility is underscored by the widespread impact of injuries and coaching mistakes—most notably Oregon’s offensive collapse, attributed to a lack of experienced play-calling and a failure to execute a stable game strategy. Indiana’s loss to Michigan was similarly criticized, with poor quarterback performance and minimal explosive plays drawing scrutiny. The fire of Dave Doren adds another layer to the season’s narrative, emphasizing instability in coaching leadership. The podcast also notes a growing trend of parity in college football, with 16 teams potentially qualifying for a playoff, reflecting a more even spread of talent across conferences. Multiple top-25 teams have lost, prompting a re-ranking of the national standings. The day’s games—ranging from the high-stakes Texas-Ole Miss clash to the chaotic Michigan-Indiana showdown—demonstrate how execution, injuries, and coaching decisions are shaping the season’s outcome. The analysis concludes with a mix of optimism and caution: while the sport is more competitive than ever, consistency, leadership, and on-field execution remain critical to championship contention.

Could you imagine if you started your actual day today, I mean we're coming to you live at 1146 PM Eastern time, honestly, later than I thought, given the way that Texas Ole Miss started, thought we might even be able to get an early start, but Ole Miss made things a little bit more interesting. Shocker, Texas had trouble on the details, being able to lay in the plane on that one, but the long horns end up winning. We are coming to you right on the backs of that result, but you could have started today watching the Stanford Cardinal defeat the NC State Wolf Pack and still be watching Houston in an absolute shootout, just like we told you, up 3-0 with 13 seconds left in the second quarter, just a fun and massive and rightly rated day of college football. So that is why we are so excited to be here with you on the Cover 3 podcast, instant reaction show week 8 brought to you by Modello. We appreciate Modello for being the official beer sponsor of the Cover 3 podcast and for sponsoring this and all of the instant reaction shows. Okay, lots to get to as we already have three top 10 teams that have lost. We will be re-ranking the top 25 by the end of the show, sponsored by Modello. We will be getting into, as we mentioned, Armando's comment, the fact that Dave Doren got fired today. Yeah, in addition to everything else that came with the college football Saturday, in addition to World Series Game 2, so going in addition to World Series Game 2, big day here at the Cover 3 podcast, but I did want to at least sit in where we just were with the absolute roller coaster that was the Texas Longhorns, Tom, do you believe in Texas anymore than you did when you woke up this morning? No. Okay. I mean, good win. Hey, hey, but no, not taking away anything from win. Not taking anything from win. Nice win. Good win. Much needed win, but that was very much like a Texas game. Like that was the same Texas game we've seen time and time again. Now, I'll give their defense credit. I thought the defense overall did a very good job despite not having cone Simmons. And also, you lose Goosby in the first half and that heard your offense and you were able to like, I felt like that probably kind of killed what momentum they had early and then it took them a while to kind of figure things out in the second half and we saw they started leaning more into the run game and it started working a little bit better. But that was just Texas, you know, they can't put together a complete four quarters. But I mean, who the hell can in 2026 if we're being totally fair still? Rich had some great moments. He also had two terrible interceptions and it's just it's a typical kind of game. And I think, you know, Relique Brown was the savior for them not having Hollywood smothers in this game and having Relique run for 157 yards on 23 carries and then Ryan Wingo with 111 yards through the air. Like those two were huge. Arch had a couple big plays and they just made more plays than Ole Miss was able to make. I mean, I pretty much agree with that. It looked like, you know, Texas was on most plays like a lot more athletic. They made Ole Miss earn a lot of the completions. I think Chamble is like early on, he was like six or 16 to start terrible, right? But like I thought Texas covered pretty well for most of this game and like they're more than just calling Simmons as a defense. I think they have a lot of really high level athletes and like they're just their speed, I think just watching them like, you know, visually it was pretty apparent. You know, like Biles on the interception, you know, like yeah, a lot of times they were just getting a lot of push. It was it was pretty good performance from that group. Are we are we thinking of Arch differently if he doesn't have that drop on that well-placed bomb to start the game, you know, maybe, but he's still like the the interceptions he threw were still awful and he does that too much where he just throws the ball up and puts it in jeopardy. I agree. It felt like he played with some urgency early, like the, you know, I was wondering if all like the, you know, pumped up the crowd on the walk through and then that was like, was that, was that fake, you know, like, you know, Sark mentioned the comment of, hey, I should have given KJ some reps and practice earlier to motivate them, like, it's motivation issue here. Or Sark just kind of talking because Texas, like, you know, could, you know. Focus, Sark says stuff and we said hashtag Sark says stuff is definitely a thing, right? I'm like, that's kind of interesting to say. I don't know if I really, huh, just just kind of makes you think, but like Texas looks like a really good team. I, you know, hadn't given up on them. Obviously, like, because they can still, they have really good backs. They have very good defense and some, like, sometimes they had home runs with the past game tonight. They hit a couple. You meant your guy, Will Eccles getting a little bit shaken up in this game. Did you, I know you've always got a little bit of like a mental star on him. Did you notice any significant changes from sort of where things were with his absence? Well, I mean, Texas Rendball pretty damn well in a second half. So, I mean, some, yeah, the, uh, yeah, I would say so. Also, I will say to you, like, the Kiwan Lacey injury kind of really changed things for Ole Miss too, which, but that's been a problem that they've been dealing with all year. The guy just can't get healthy. No, it, yeah. It's like people talk about like I grew in Koan Lacey, Koan Lacey, and I think he's really good back. And then like when he's not in here, like, yeah, they, they actually, they miss him. Yeah. Yeah. For, um, I don't, I think that it's disappointing if you're an Ole Miss fan, like, if you are the Dennis, if you are the Dennis, you're disappointed because you had a literally a throw to tie the game and you played bad. I thought this was Ole Miss's C++ game. If I'm the Dennis, I'm pissed off because my coach wasted a time out before attempting a 58 yard field goal that turned a one-score game into a one-score game. And man, we really could have used that time out late. Not a great peak golden grade at game. Mm-hmm. That's for sure. Um, you know, that's a, I'm, I'm looking at all these factors in this game that stacked up against Ole Miss where we're going to come out of this because Texas, Texas's entire body of work is strong enough that we can look at this game and just throw it up as another, yeah, yeah, good quality win for the long horns. But man, could have been something really special for Ole Miss, which now will face a very, very thin margin for error the rest of the way if they wouldn't be able to accomplish any of the goals that they had coming into this Saturday. A lot of opportunity to lost in Austin where to me in this game, Texas left the door open and Ole Miss just couldn't find a way to walk through it. I, yeah, I, I think that's fair. I, I think these are both like really good teams, you know, like it's, I'm not out or out or out of them, honestly. I mean, like if, and I'm not predicting it, but like you look at Ole Miss's schedule from here on out, Auburn, Georgia at Oklahoma, Wofford, Mississippi State, so Oklahoma is the only road game they have left. Would any of us, based on what we have seen this season, be shocked, if Ole Miss takes down Georgia? No. If they do, they're right back in the thick of everything. I think Ole Miss can go at nine and three, like strong chance to go at nine and three. But if that loss is Georgia, I mean, what's the win that's going to be able to get them in? LSU. This is way too early for y'all to put me in a pretzel like this, but I'm really tempted to go to the other side of this where I have firmly been in the stance of the thing about a 12 team playoff as you can only have 12 teams or the thing about a 12 team playoff is you have to pick 12 teams. I think I'm going to say everyone's playoff caliber. I think that is like, would it surprise you at all if Ole Miss went at nine and three? No, not at all. Would it surprise you at all? Texas went at nine and three? No, not at all. I think I'm going to greenlight like 16 teams for the college football playoff from here on now. If there were a 2014 playoff this year, it would be freaking awesome. Yeah. I mean, like, be. Don't say the quiet part out loud, Tom. I'm just saying, it would be awesome. I'm not giving credit to all of the decision makers on this 2014 thing because it's really just about money. But I think there are some people in that room that see how the talent is spreading out across the sport and see, like, you know, not anything was going to be implemented in 2027, but like, eventually, we're going to get there where this is a lot more even across the sport. And it already is much more even across the sport, you know, than it was just two, three years ago. It's like games matter less, sure, but losses come faster. Like your game of lost counter can't work anymore. Right. Yeah. Or shouldn't.
I'm sure some people will hold to it, but yeah. - Yeah, from the football side, anything else from Texas Ole Miss? I mean, it seems like we're both generally in on flawed, but talented and kind of fun teams across the board. - Like some sort of injury issue. I mean, think about it. Gooseby, Lacey, like we're sort of flawed, but fun, right? - Yeah, like there's no perfect teams this year, at all, and really like the entry, I guess for us, like who's gonna win this tournament? Who's gonna win this season is, I can't remember the last time I had no idea who's gonna win a national title. Like, I mean, a decade ago, it was kind of boring at this point, right? It's like, all right. So it's gonna be Bama Clemser or maybe Ohio State. - Can't wait to see Oklahoma lose. - Yeah, exactly. - Link and Riley are coming up in a little bit. - All right, yeah, guys, there's some points. It might score 40, they'll give up 70. - The favorite right now at DraftKings, to win the title is Notre Dame at plus 460, which is-- - Don't pass that. - But that's 17.9% implied. - Right, but yes, and I'm glad you said implied, because the other big part of there is just getting there. Right, like my name is Notre Dame, are 90% plus percent to make it at this point, you know? So like, we'll do this Monday. I'll strip out like what you're, what are your odds of making it if you get into the dance odds, against just like your total odds of winning it, because a lot of that is implied, as far as like, you actually have to make it to the dance. - Let's go Striker. - I mean, look at those. - Look at this, yeah. - Look how flat they are. - No, for those who are listening at home, and we have an awesome audience, especially for this show, Notre Dame, Georgia, Ohio State, Miami, just like, can we say, like, is that fair, guys, cut? That's your top tier, just like not much separation in terms of the prices. Then we don't have to go that much farther to get Indiana, Alabama, LSU, Texas. These are the national title to win the title odds. Got six to eight teams all within a decent, you know, fighting range. - I mean, you can look at this, and you can see some of like the implications, right? Like so, Indiana's fifth to win it. They're by far the second most likely team to make it at this point. - Based on avoiding the loss today. - Correct, yeah. - They have left, yeah. - But also, their odds being fifth to win it are probably also somewhat of a reflection of how bad they look today. - How they've played to get that record to put themselves in position to be there. - Yeah, man, that was a rough wash. Like, you had got that game sucked. Like, it was close. There was drama, but it was crappy, man. - No, that came with wash. - That came with really bad, yeah. - That was like, really bad NFL. Like, if it didn't have stakes, I'd be like, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm. - Oh hell yeah, big NFC East energy. - Oh, yeah. - Yeah. - You can't say NFC South, 'cause those games are all high scoring with no defense. - It's like, like NFC East energy over there. - Like week 14, Cowboys and what do they call it now? - Commanders. - The commanders. - Yeah, the fling off team. - Yeah. - They're both out of the playoff, you know, it's still, it's an NFC East rivalry, one-on-one line. Like, it's nine-seven, yeah. - 425, America's Game of the Week. - T-Bob A-Bare was making fun of the game, you know, on Twitter, and I had to call him out, because obviously T-Bob played on the LSU team that was in that nine-six game with Alabama. And I was like, I was like, obviously, it's bringing back great memories for you because of this game, but like, there was a difference. Like, the Alabama LSU game was actually an entertaining nine-to-six overtime game. This Michigan Indiana game was just dog crap for three and a half hours. It was terrible football. - Didn't matter whether it was Tommy Carr, Bryce Underwood, Josh Hoover, I couldn't tell the difference between any of them. I was so woke, I was color blind, man. I mean, it just like, like, it just, it did not matter. The quarterback play in this game was so bad. - Did they have a decent drive? - Did any of them? - No, not really. Just turnovers set up like a lot of Indian opportunities for overtime. - Yeah. - Yeah, then they didn't, nobody scored a touchdown until overtime. - I don't think Indiana scored a single point on a drive that started outside of field goal range. - Here we go, you guys ready for this? - Yeah. - Indiana's two field goal drive, seven play, 24 yards, four plays, five yards, Michigan's field goal drives, four plays, two yards, 13 plays, 53. Those boys must have been winded after moving all that distance. I mean, you could do a dramatic reading of the drive chart and one of those won. - I think about how they win. Let's go into that. How did, what was the card to horrendous turnovers? - Yeah, right. - Do you read it, Indiana's defense? Like if we were talking to Indiana, did you lose less? - We talked about this this week, right? Like, you know, I didn't take it on locks 'cause we took under and sticks. I wanted to get the flat seven there, right? But I was like, look, they got a half film on this guy. He's a freshman. He was 15th rated freshman in the country, quarter back, which is a good rating, but it's not like a, you know, freak talent type rating. And Indiana has a really good defense, so they'll probably eat him up. And they did. Like, he didn't look any better than Bryce Underwood's look this year and probably worse in some ways. - He looked better than Josh Hoover though. Give him credit for that. But like, well, SIG did say Hoover would get healthier, of course. - Well, he wasn't on the entry report. - Nobody was. - Nobody was, yeah. It was crazy. But like, I will say, with Tommy Carr, I don't think Indiana was really doing anything, all that complicated. I think they were mostly just dropping into coverage the entire game, rushing for. And they were getting pressure doing it. And Tommy Carr was just bringing his eyes down, damn, near immediately. Like, it was the first read. It wasn't there. And then he would panic and kind of scramble a little bit. It's just when you've got him scrambling like that, it's really hard to win games. When your quarterback's not willing to actually read defenses, but they were able to hang around because the Indiana offense was just dumb. Like, it was bad. Josh Hoover played horrible. He finished eight of 18 for 81 yards. And again, all of his throws were high. He was missing. And I don't know if his shoulder was still bothering him. I don't know. We'll never know. But it's just his accuracy for these last three or four games now has been pretty horrific. Yeah, Michigan or Michigan had one play that exceeded 20 yards on the day. Was it a scramble? No, it was a 18-year-old throw to get air yards. Yeah, six yards of yeah. Hey, listen, I will say we mentioned this maybe two or three weeks ago. But the lack of explosive plays is something that a lot of commentators are picking up on. I mean, you know, it's a cool thing. Probably scanned maybe two dozen games today. Oh, like, and I'll tell you what, not a single pass play over 20 yards, not a single run. Oh, Wisconsin. That was it. I mean, of course, Blackwood's got it, right? You know, like, he was like, I'll tell you what. This has been Wisconsin's whole game plan. They've executed it perfectly. They just said, sure, Jayden, let's go. You're just not going to beat us deep. You know, you're like, you're not going to rip off the explosive run. And it leads, when you don't have the difference maker at the quarterback position, because we know Indiana has the difference makers at wide receiver, I was, I mean, I was ready to declare Indiana has a quarterback problem as like a reaction. Do they? Well, Sig openly talked in the press conference about maybe making a switch at halftime, right? So I would say yes. But what we can't answer is how much of Indiana's quarterback problem is health? Like, only they know that. If he's actually fully healthy, then yeah, they have a quarterback problem. My guess here, given the fact that he was literally winsing on the broadcast last week, he's probably not actually healthy. Maybe not like that his status to actually play in the ballgame was in doubt, but his status to be effective clearly was in doubt. I just, this is, this seems to be the the world that Kurt Signetti feels comfortable living in also. You know, when he's talking after the game and he's like, well, there wasn't pretty, but it was gritty, you know, and he's like, it was a win and I just, I just, I just think that he's, he's been around a while, right? I mean, this is somebody who lived with the lawns of Barnett. This is somebody who lived with, you know, was it McLeod, right, Jordan McLeod? Who, like could could give you something, right? Jordan McLeod could give you something. Josh Hoover can give you something, but, you know, it's not always great. Like Kurt Signetti doesn't seem to be as bothered with imperfect quarterback play as some other coaches might be. He seems to be very comfortable at this point in his career. Well, and it decades upon decades into his career that yeah, like we sit here on the cover three podcasts are like, oh my gosh, at the end of the end of the doesn't have the quarterback play that they need to be able to live up to the national championship expectations. Kurt Signetti with all the different types of quarterbacks that he's had are all the different levels that he's coached. It's like, yeah, I don't know. Sure, we'll figure it out. Just like we have it, all these other stops. Like he's got a very different perspective And then I think most national [BLANK_AUDIO]
football fans might when they're looking at Indiana and trying to think about how much alarm there is about the quality of their quarterback play. Health could be another thing. I'm willing to say health is another thing, but quality might have exposed itself as well through the first eight weeks. He is also pointed out all off season about how every quarterback he's had has played great. Quarterbacks not playing great this year. I would say that if you traced it back to like Barnett McLeod, like keep taking it back right. There were some imperfections. Yeah, I know, but I'm just saying the way he talked all off season, it was like all of our come all of my. That was off season talk though. That means your quarterbacks not playing great for sure. He is 40 of his last 80. And to be fair to Josh who is not playing well in any fashion, their offensive line this year isn't as good as their offensive line was last year either. Yeah, they're not as good as they were last year, but they're in a big 10 where nobody is. Who's good in the big 12? As Utah still losing right now, I haven't looked at the score. There's individual players in the big 12 who are who are good. I think there's a lot of teams that are good in the big 12. You think any of these big 12 teams are running the playoff game? I don't, but we'll see like the sport is way more compressed than it used to be. I think they could win a playoff game. Okay, if you if you could beat Notre Dame, you can win a playoff game. Well, what about BYU? They lost on the road huge letdown, which we all saw coming. Not a UCF thing at all. No, UCF deserves plenty of credit. I'm just I I'm not going to write off BYU for the letdown. The same way I wasn't going to write off Ole Miss after losing to Florida after beating LSU like it happens. We're seeing it every day and week in the sport. Yeah, but would you make it the ending of this game? Scott was insane. Scott for all said after the game, he had never been a part of the ending of a game like that. No, I mean, I I've never been a part of an ending of a game like that either. I mean, it was the kicker has his face ripped off, and then they lose 10 seconds because of it. I've tried to understand why they didn't have a chance to kick it then. Are we sure that she threw the flag for a face mask and then picked it up because they just said there's no foul. They didn't say there's no foul for a face mask. And my thought here was did she throw the flag thinking that you were not allowed to advance the fuel goal incorrectly and then picked it up? Possible. Because if the guy's helmet gets ripped off and you flagged it for a face mask, that's kind of a hard pickup. If you misapply to rule and then something on your cruise like no, no, hey, because it was because it was grabbed behind the line of scrimmage, they can advance it. Oh, that's right. Yeah, that's not a foul. Is it still about a face mask? No, it's clearly a face mask. Like that should have clearly been called, but also like, you know, UCF maybe don't fall start on second and goal from the foot line, right? And that both these teams just had so many chances. UCF looked a lot faster than BYU. I thought with the exception of Glasgow, you know, and maybe that's just you just came off a crazy week, right? And UCF came off not a crazy week. And they, you know, obviously they took the game really seriously. They had a great, you know, gameplay for you. It was a lot of East West taking advantage of their speed matchup stuff. And they they just put chickens was awesome. I mean, like chickens just stepped like look, hung in there and it made some huge throws. We saw this last week. Georgia looked kind of slow, you know, compared to their normal like Georgia, you know, kill robot defense and BYU today looked to beat slow. Jiggins made some really nice throws, man. Like that, that's impressive. That was way better than what we usually saw when he played at FIU. You know, now he was a little bit of the FI stuff there. He got away with for sure. And I tweeted like I would not be sending this guy out for the coin toss right now. I'd or he just spiked the ball on first down. It is another thing about that though. Cause like if you if you go back and watch it as he's going out to the huddle, he's like turning around to the sideline and doing this like spike it like over and over again. So he's clearly talking to the coaches. We're able to communicate with him at that point. And nobody told him, no, no, we're not spiking on first down. They were just like, yeah, yeah, that was and look, I know BYU committed a lot of penalty BYU will give you a little extra after the whistle. And sometimes they get flagged for it, right? Like if you watch enough ball, like, I mean, obviously that's our job. So we watch a ton of these ball games. They they are a, I'm not, I don't think you're a dirty team, but like they will definitely give you a little bit extra. And sometimes they get called for it. And you like, you dribble the guys head off the turf right in front of the ref. That's probably going to get called to be season. Yeah, they've always been that way. Like even going back to like the Bronco days and like before that, they've always had a little play to the echo of the whistle to them. Ryan makes a good point in the chat. He's like, you know, BYU calling out like admitting some of the intentional penalties that they were doing against against Notre Dame mid week, maybe not the best. Maybe a little hypervangelance there from that big 12 crew, just just to be on alert. I mean, if if nothing else, just to tip off Scott, hey, how's it going? Yeah, hey, how you doing? Good to see you. I did you hear what BYU was saying mid week? Well, when they fall started at the goal line, I was like, Oh, shoot. The BYU make a call, you know, which is smart when the crowd's going nuts, obviously. Now that's the UCF home game. So the crowd shouldn't be going that nuts when they're trying to score. Yeah. Oh, how's the group chat? I haven't even asked you yet. I mean, this is, it has to be, we did not flag this as like an awesome day. And I'm not going to throw it as one for like the Hall of Fame record books, but really solid, fast moving, you know, up tempo day here. What's the, what's the UCF group chat looking like in the celebration category? I feel like I've been the only optimist all season like guys, your UCF are hard. You lost your starting quarterback in week two. I have no idea if he's coming back this year. And y'all are still solidly in bulk attention when your preseason win total was like five. Like so your beating expectations without your starting quarterback for like the whole year, your defense looks vastly improved. They tackle well. You got some promising young young skill position guys out there. The old line is like, OK, there's really no shame in losing to messed up maker on the road at the home estate. Like sure, Candidate game got got out a hand a little bit. You beat TCU, right? Like you, you know, you, you played Houston tough for like 40 minutes. Houston's pretty got. I don't know. I feel like I've been the optimist on this, but then they beat BYU. And, you know, now, now playoff here we come. Right. Pretty much. Yeah. What about the BYU side? Are they going to be able to, you know, just bounce back from this? I, yeah, I think they're. Yeah, their schedule is like is a cakewalk. Yeah, I mean, who do they have next? They're a next week, their first Arizona state, which Arizona state side, exactly light in the world on fire. All that they did win today. You've got the road game to Utah in a few weeks. That's really it. And then you've got Baylor Kansas and Cincinnati, who may be more dangerous than we thought. Or maybe we're just pissed off at you for some stuff you said during the off season and did Cincinnati? Yeah. It's pissed off at BYU. No, Texas tech. Oh, no, no, no, you. All right. So do you think the Brendan Soresby bowl really came down to Brendan Soresby? They tagged Cody Campbell. They tagged Cody Campbell chip. Don't you remember what Cody Campbell said in the off season when he was like when Cincinnati, at least is that's fine when we're up 40 on him in the fourth quarter. We won't show any mercy. So all off season like pre-Soresby. I was like, yeah, if Texas tech. Holy cow. Where are you been doing all day? Working head down in results, not seeing who's Cincinnati tagged on Twitter. But thankfully our esteemed and hyper vigilant producing team led by Ryan Striker is obviously on this youtube.com/cover3 if you're watching along live. And I hope you are. Cody Campbell tagged in the result. Let's go. Pre-Soresby this off season. Like I caught some flak for this tech fans is like if they for some reason don't make the playoff. Like that job needs to open. You know, like Joey McWire like two years of this and like they were not they were outclassed in the quarter final orange ball against Oregon. Stop if you heard this for maybe like last year all down the stretch. But Texas tech moved the ball okay between the 20s and it really bogged down. They kicked five fuel goals today made for them. Of any top 25 team today, they had the most EPA lost to penalty. So they had like really bad ones at really bad times, which was not great. They scored one offensive touchdown on Cincinnati defense that has been at times like flat out bad. You know, like at times they're feisty, but those times are kind of rare. So yeah man. Um.
I don't think they're going to get in the playoff thing 11 and two given this schedule. Maybe. So they even I think they need to win out. Do you trust them to do that? No. Yeah. I mean, that's like four or five teams in the big 12. Well, if we want to play the game of can I talk to a Texas tech fan out in the wilderness and convince them that, hey, yeah, man, y'all got this. Come on. Go win the college football. I go, y'all can make the college football playoff and then see what happens. But as we're sitting here, I mean, this is not a team that has impressed me a lot against quality competition. I mean, they haven't really been great at any point. Like they looked, well, actually, no, and I take that back. They looked very good last week against Arizona State. Yeah. And then they looked against Colorado for half that game. Houston, they won. They, but they struggled to win that game. Oregon State gave him trouble, but Oregon State's been giving teams trouble. Like, but they have not been anywhere near the team that they were last year. And you look at the rest of their schedule. It's like they've got Arizona next, which that could be tough. Arizona is kind of feisty as hell. West Virginia. They're able to put up points. The way Will Hammond's playing, I don't know if I'm Texas Tech. If I want to get into a shootout because we literally went on the road today and my quarterback outplayed by JC French, who again, not disrespecting, but not exactly. Hey, oh, real quick. Today's shootout against a decent team. You would have to actually score points against a decent team. JC French had the perfect game in a chaos upset. What was that? Like four touchdowns, two interceptions. Two interceptions. Yeah, that's that's exactly what I want from the team that's going to have the like total, like break all your projections kind of upset because you know what? We have known from the beginning of the season that that young man is not going to be the best quarterback in the big 12, but on any given day. Sure. Go out there and play pretty well. Texas Tech had no stops. About coal tab on the. 16 carries 173 yards. His last name is tab, but he better not be paying for a damn beer in that town for the rest of the season after that performance. Did I don't have his like rushing matrix pulled up where all of them to the outside felt like they were just knowing the edges with them. You know, it's like, Hey, here's what we're going to do is we're going to put tab this like super shifty running back. We're just going to get them in that like that classic Scott Satterfield zone blocking scheme, right? Same sort of stuff that he's been running all the way back to app and then it's like find it find it find it. Boom. And then we're just going to just blitz down the field. Also great Scott Satterfield win. Oh, you know, he's got to give it to you, right? Every now and then the key is as Dave Doren got fired today. Scott Satterfield is just doing like a Dave Doren dance. They just don't realize it yet. What's it? It'll be there for 15 years. He'll give you one of these. And then that'll buy him a couple more years. And then it'll just keep doing this dance over and over and over again. They've got some like 10 big raise to them, honestly, or maybe like. Remember the years when Oakland was like super, super broke and they weren't making the playoff. But they were still like, find the way to win 80. Like, I think since he's front office is like really good actually. Like they do. I don't know. I don't know their personnel team right now. Shout out to that grant. Is that grants the GM? Like they're smarter guys there as well. Like I know some of their staff's gotten hard away, but like they. They don't have a lot of money and they just routinely hit on their funds. It seems like. And like I'm not a huge French fan. Like I've said, but I do trust their assessment of finding quarterbacks who fit what they're doing. They've proven pretty regularly that they they know what they're getting. Like that's yeah. They also can block like that's what their offensive lines good. That's one of like the best. I mean, I've never thought about ranking this. If you were to rank the best offensive lines for teams that are in the bottom half of the P4. Like Cincinnati's like clearly at the right. Like that's a weird ranking. Congratulations. You're a 33rd in offensive line. But like they're one of these. But she's not 49. Yeah. Right. Like, you know, a lot of these these like a lot of these teams that are that are kind of outside the top like 30 is they can't block a lick. And Cincinnati can actually block. For teams that can't afford those boys, they're able to block pretty well with the boys they can afford. Which is a testament to them. I was having a conversation. I like to use shoes comment, but is the only voter in those ranking. Yeah. I mean, it's it's very mid table action. Right, Tom? Yeah, for sure. Yeah. Big, big mid table. Big bright energy coming out of Cincinnati. Maybe Europa League. Let's go Europa conference league action. Yeah. I mean, the classiest field storm you'll ever see. You know, very friendly. Very friendly. You know, I props to them for for having class and character. The bear cats do have a chance to be chaotic as hell, though. The rest of their schedule. They're Utah next week. Then they're at Houston. And they finish at BYU. So they've got a chance to ruin everybody in the big 12. Well, we thought that was going to be TCU. And now I don't know if that's going to be TCU. So, um, yeah, TBD. I've got TCU penciled in. We've already thrown the run in case you haven't been able to tell 36 minutes in. We haven't hit a single break. We've thrown the run down out the window. It's that kind of Saturday. But yeah, at some point, I had sunny sort of penciled in as part of our hot seat conversation on the who's next. But him and his buddy Dave Randa both took a pretty bad losses on the same day that Dave Dorn was fired more on that here in just a little bit. And coming up on the other side. Back here on the cover three podcast. Absolute thrills. Delights, amusements. One of many games today when I was so happy did not be invested emotionally. More on my emotional investments later. The disaster. But let's talk about. The stupidest laws. I didn't see this. So now I'm going to try to find it like during the next break. It honestly should have ended 24, 23, you know. And the disappointing thing was. I think some people in Keenan Stadium were ready for it in 24, 23. Because when the game ended. Looks like a lot of people had already checked out and figured they lost 24, 23 didn't realize it was another chance to win. It goes like that. Let's talk about the teams inside the top 25. How about number 11 Tennessee loses on the road to South Carolina, 2724, not quite an upset. Obviously because South Carolina. Was the betting favorite in the eyes of the odds makers and they are able to get. That game winning field goal kick. For Tennessee, it is a game where. You kind of had a chance to get back into it and steal it. Is that fair? If Tennessee had won this game, would they have stolen it? Because it felt early like South Carolina was playing a little bit to script. I mean, South Carolina got off to a great start. And then Tennessee completely dominated the second quarter. And like each. So they traded quarters in the first half. And then nobody really did anything in the second half until South Carolina took control in the fourth. The Llanora sellers touchdown. Was awesome. Wow. Yeah. That's why we don't skip leg day. Go look it up if you have not gotten a chance. The physicality that is shown there. What do you finish with 90 some on yards rushing. 18 carries 96 yards to touchdowns. Yeah. George McIntyre obviously a little bit overwhelmed at times in this game. It's not fair. Yeah. Yeah. And South Carolina's defense deserves credit. The Sean Bishop did rush for 120 yards, but he needed 32 carries to get there. I told you, he's going to get 32 carries to game the rest of the season because that is Tennessee's offense. Yeah. But if you're able to limit him like that to under four yards per carry, then that's a winning strategy for you. The kid they have coming to next year, by the way. Who I know if you guys listen to five star. If you give him 32 carries, I guarantee you as long as Ron's going to be over 20. Like to Sean Bishop, like 32 for 120 is not a, that's like South Carolina would allow that all day. 100%. Especially when you had one pass over 20. Like I just felt like Tennessee. They just like they never hit anything like exciting or explosive. You know, it was just. Yeah. And it's hard when the defense is just stacking the box because they don't respect your quarterback. Yeah. Tennessee fans are very upset about penalties in this game, by the way. I would be out of that too if I had 12 for 90 yards, but it's not like South Carolina didn't have their fair share. Yeah, I mean, it was a sloppy game. Yeah, it was not a pretty football game. No, I think that. Well, they had some called back the explosive place. Oh.
I see what you're saying well were they explosives without your penalties Like a lot of big plays happen with holding calls don't wonder why How did how did that wide receiver have that extra second to be able to really How did he get to the edge? How does football work? I don't know Still try to figure it out Tom 17 seasons later, you know, we're still working on it for the Tennessee side of things. This is kind of the game that you play right you win these Like when your defense is able to get an edge Like they did against Alabama and you keep an opponent totally in check Then you're gonna be able to score enough to win because 26 was enough to win 26 would not have been enough to win today This is just the game that you play right? Yeah Also Xavier Gillum didn't just like take over the entire game As he did for like a long stretch of the Texas game and he did for a long stretch of the Bama game Where I didn't have this one planned, but just thought that came to mind We've not mentioned Kindle Browse's name as much as we probably did when we were criticizing Kindle Browse It's our grade at this point October 25 Because the Norris has had a couple good game. It was it was win against Florida off win against Tennessee I know it's been three weeks in real time. So we haven't been like pounding it every single week, but right now Gamecocks offense is at least starting to get something close to The form that I think a South Carolina fan would hope you would have found and we're maybe looking for in the early Weeks of the season. Who did they play before the first game you mentioned there? It was a loss Wasn't Bama was it Why I started with just thought about this didn't have this question prep so I remember like before they went and beat Florida. I felt like he actually played pretty good in losing effort Oh, okay Kentucky. Yes. Yeah, like I thought like that was the game is like oh okay He's starting to look more comfortable in this like even I lost it like he's starting to look good Yeah, that was 35 34 Kentucky wins in Columbia, but to your point that the difference from um You know not being able to score against Alabama to 34 against Kentucky 38 against Florida and then the performance today Which wasn't overwhelming but obviously big plays late for huge just to go back to the penalty discussion. I'm looking it up There was one illegal shift that negated a 35 year touchdown But as for the claims that we missed all the illegal shift formations That was the only one that they called and there were two holding calls that brought back big plays There was another illegal formation, but that was on a punt And I didn't really change anything Um We will address where Tennessee falls as they drop from the ranks of the one loss and uh I know this is going to surprise everyone who's been paying attention to college football, but There's a whole gang of two lost teams in the SEC that are probably going to be three lost teams or four lost teams by the end of the season Should make up for a wild wild finish of conference play in the southeastern conference But before we get to much more there um Tom Fernelli rightly and I actually let me You rightly put me in my place for not putting the pig Higher on the big game breakdown rundown. Mm-hmm And that was my mistake and in the season of improvement We're going to check the tape. We're going to get better Because dad coming we had a walkoff winner for a pig State fairs in town right now. All right. I mean we we had a you soccer game down in method road Means we had to worry about fair traffic trying to make sure we were making these uh these soccer games Yeah, a walkoff winner for a pig. That's a blue ribbon. That is a blue ribbon win For the Minnesota Golden Gofers Against the Iowa Hawkeyes Hell yeah, that was uh let's go. Hey, you know what I thought about Tom That man PJ Fleck has gotten himself a jug in a pig. Mm-hmm We are like one more rivalry trofe for you away from the gym valvano full day What do you say you laugh you cry? Well, they've also got the axe right now Like there's the here's the stat because they beat Wisconsin last year They've got Paul Bunyan's axe the little brown jug in the Florida Rosedale at the same time for the first time since 1978 Let's go But that's on the line later. That's the thing is to get it all it is, but they currently hold all three Would you have stuck with a glensky No ice brown was pretty bad man. Yeah neither of them were good But I think when they look at those two they're probably thinking that brown isn't gonna make as many dumb throws Is a clensky kind of has the tendency to do and put the ball in jeopardy So in that kind of game. I feel like they probably wanted the safer option And brown did lead a really nice drive there at the end of the game when they went like 98 yards, but just yeah This I mean this wasn't all that different from the indiana michigan game the only difference was it was kind of what we expected it to be So you weren't as bothered by it But I mean neither one of these offenses did anything like they think let me see. I will had 288 yards I'm gonna sort of had 209 yards. Yeah, and one Was just kind of like the michigan game where they got the jug And by the way, like for the record it's it's it's laugh. Thank cry. I'm but you know. I'm sorry. I got you off I had to correct you. I had to correct you because you were wrong. I Much love to Jimmy V Bob Nick whole gang But uh, but this is This is the kind of like If you want to buy into the PJ flag experience And accept everything that comes with it It does also get you some of these wins where you're like how the hell did you win that game so I'd be something to it PJ flag is a home dog and a rivalry game and and we didn't all take that like we we I mean Although I will say I'm so happy that my Minnesota team total undercashed and they want What a unique combination It's incredible. I love that game. It's a it's a wonderful game. I love it I don't think they're playing it for the couple of years which sucks. Oh, that's just a suck if If he gets the act if he retains the acts that would be a full day You know all those rivalry trophies right there um we don't have a rivalry trophy But if you're gonna mention the Indiana Michigan game if you're gonna mention the Iowa the Minnesota Iowa game It did kind of look like uh UCLA Michigan State was kind of along that same kind of path there who we Tremendous game on CBS Yeah, it was it was rough going for UCLA for the first part of that game like Michigan State jumped out to the seven nothing lead But even more than that it was just UCLA They were not really able to move the ball very effectively on the ground a lot of the concerns we'd seen the last few weeks Without Niko were there, but then They kind of found their groove, but I'm not convinced that the problems are ultimately solved as much as it's just that's a Michigan state team That's down to like a lot of third and four stringers on the defensive side of the ball They came out and they they did what they could for about a quarter and a half before the dam broke and then things just took over but yet um The defense still looks good That's how I thought but Michigan State was playing its third string quarterback Like that was Honestly, you're not gonna you're not gonna feel bad for your 28-10 wind at home but Considering the situation Michigan State was in where they're coming off that really like heartbreaking loss in their big game against Northwestern last week And they've got so many third and four stringers at key spots. I would have liked to have won a lot more convincingly if I'm UCLA I mean they got the win I think that's the most they can really hope for like I don't think they're they're probably not going to win pretty like they're a Well coach solid pretty limited football team, you know Coach we saw a tie deep and back um limping a little bit Bob Jesney said yay. He just got stepped on I saw I saw he's like yeah, we ain't got no other options chip isn't that exactly what he said about Niko at first? I don't remember what he said. I don't I just I could I could I could just since I could sense from his tone It is like yeah And we ain't going deeper on the depth chart as long as he can get out there and hand the ball off But to your point Tom, I'm glad you shouted out the defense because that was my big takeaway from the game. It's like okay We look at what we thought the UCLA defense was gonna be at the beginning of the season And if we look at the way the UCLA defense performed in the first three weeks of the season But then I saw
the late opponents taken into consideration. Back up quarterbacks taken into consideration. But they played Dante, right? Yeah. Like they played, they played real Dante before you got hit and knocked out of the game. No, they didn't. No, that was USC. They didn't play. Who played Dante? They played Reola. Sorry, Oklahoma state played Dante and beat him early. Sorry. We've got more on Oklahoma state later in Madela's top 25 today. There's a spoiler. But this is a defense of the last three to four weeks has done a pretty good job. They've improved or at least they have locked in in a in a form that they will need to ride if they're going to continue this magical season. Now again, seven and oh, on the year UCLA is seven and no. Look at that. Did you look at the big 10 standings? The conference standings. Not in the last three hours. Not if I can help it. UCLA's five and oh, how states for no there followed by Indiana at four and one and then it's Northwestern Minnesota and Wisconsin at three and one. Just like we all thought it was going to be Minnesota and Wisconsin. I mean, the acts at the end of the year could legitimately have real stakes to it. Besides the a wonderful giant wooden axe, which is real enough tailgates already bringing up Dylan Riala. I out of respect for everybody else in the tailgate. Actually no, Tom, do you want to go out and dance right now? I'm your monkey. Tell me when coming up on the other side. What a big win in champagne. What does it mean for an Oregon team that was picked as a national title contender? Who cares? Plus Miami and LSU. Keep things a little bit light and not as dramatic. Alabama and Alabama kind of wakes up from a slow start. Plus Dave Doran's firing rewranking the top 25 and more. Let's timestamp this. It is 1239 AM Eastern time. I've got Houston up 10 to seven on the road in Salt Lake City. I've got New Mexico with the 14 to nine lead against North Dakota State to very, very important games that are left here on a week eight Saturday that is coming to a conclusion a little bit earlier, but hey, it's okay. We can still run late here on the cover three podcast. So let's spend a little time celebrating I L L because this was, hey, we talked about like Gritty wins, Tom. This was a Gritty win for the Alina. What'd you what'd you see from from Illinois? I'll start fan side. Huge win for Illinois, like massive for them as far as the ability to get to a bowl game, because even if they don't meet the expectations that they maybe had before the season began, getting to a bowl game for three straight years would be something they haven't done since like the 1988 to 92 seasons when they went five years in a row. So they just haven't had that kind of consistency. So to get this win with the remaining schedule they have left that makes things a lot more likely is also big for them. Just I think just for what they've been through all season with how bad things were. I just think mentally getting this win was huge for them. I think it was huge for Brad. I think it was huge for the coaching staff now breaking it down from the game perspective of what both of these teams are. I think this game and the context needs to be mentioned like, you know, it's not just Dante more than Oregon was without they didn't have Evan Stewart. They didn't have McClellan. They didn't have a bunch of receivers. They were missing guys, but I believe the take away and this is kind of a statement on Oregon's entire season is what we saw in this game was an Illinois team that didn't have it starting quarterback either. But they did have an offensive coordinator who's experienced and is a good play caller and was able to figure out a game plan to build around his true freshman quarterback and also another young quarterback in Carson Boyd because Illinois used two QBs like Clayton was the thrower boyd was kind of like the runner hill. He did throw once, but it was like a lot of RPO kind of rushing stuff. He built a game plan around what he had and he executed it well enough that Illinois was able to score enough points to win this game. The Oregon side has not done that this year. And yes, Illinois had the buy going into this, but if you're Oregon, you have known your quarterback situation for a month now and you go into this game and Oregon should have won this game. Oregon was running the ball very effectively. On the game, they averaged 5.6 yards per care and then quit and they quit. And then. Excuse me. Whoa. But yeah, like they they came out on their first possession of the game and they went down the field quickly, put up a touch down and then from that point on, they were getting like dropback happy trying to do like a lot of throw and cool stuff. And then they would eventually they'd get to the run game and the run game would work and then they would abandon it again. And there was times in the second half where they had a nice drive going and then they ended up missing the field goal. But then they come back with the next possession and they've once again abandoned the run game. And it was just I'm sitting and I'm just again that that was the that was the difference to me in watching this game is that one team had a play caller who knew what he was doing and one head one that's still trying to figure it out. Yeah, I don't know that he's going to get another year to figure it out. Like if you're Dan landing bringing back that offensive staff is like an unacceptable risk to be honest. Like like I think it was already kind of risky to go in house, unproven play caller, it clearly like blew up in his face big time. And like they wasted what's a pretty good defense overall this year with this. So yeah, like there was a good chart. I think it was Arkansas client. I'll give him a shout. Like the new coordinators on both sides of the ball who like way more or less expected points. And they're like organs like really bad. So they're probably my guess is that offensive staff is a one and done. And it should be because that's horrendous. And it's it's easy to say now. And we did kind of call it out of it in the preseason. But like you look at Oregon had with Dante more coming back. Everybody they had coming back the expectations and the goal for this year. And you say why didn't you go out and get it better like an experienced option to run your offense. I think that's a mistake that Dan landing is going to look back on and be like zoom like you're going to say that word chips said that I would never say on air. Like if we had a tough both of you have. Yeah. And do you know what you guys don't have that I do. I have a beep MP3 that I'm a send a striker. We're done. Okay. Because I'm gonna make life easy. All right. I'm going to send him a beep MP3 that is pre cut to be ready to go. But that is the thing that break like breaks my heart like truth like true truth serum. Like Dan is answering these questions. Honestly, right. And he keeps saying it's going to be all of us. It's going to be evaluation. It's going to be and I just I just I see right years ago. Okay. This was a misstep. And the thing is the greats like the greats do have missteps. And he hadn't had any misses, right? Oh, the only teams at Dan landing loose who go into the national championship or at least play for it. You know, yes. It's a misstep or maybe Illinois is going to play off. Nope. What? Going to play off. I mean, like there's a real chance. Lenny looks back on the season is like, damn it. Like look at all the other teams out there. Like how flawed they are. Like if we were playing close to our talent level and offense at all, we'd be talked about as a national title contender. And like this is an unmitigated disaster on offense. I mean, honestly, like A&M too. Oh, man. I don't know. There's there's there's some staffs out there that I think like man. Like politically as far as to your donor base to your fans to your your administration. Like you just can't take the risk of running that staff back on that side of the ball. Okay. I don't want to. I do not want to delve into the political nature of the Texas A&M staff given how many political ads I've had with Texas based schools on my broadcast. Like with with with with all the Ohio State on TV in recent weeks. And then like all the rays playing the Guardians in that long series. I was like, do I got to move to Ohio to vote against this guy like this? You know, this guy seems terrible hobby. It's a bit covered to live. Liam was like, that's a bad guy, right? I'm like, Oh, man, messaging is crazy. Oh, that. And if you guys caught the grand theft auto commercial, that's a great one. Yeah. Actually, it is really well done. But just I wish they wouldn't when they're until like, I don't know, 930 or something. Yeah. I don't need to unpack all this right now for my children. Right. Yeah. Correct. It is well done. Like for sure. But yeah.
Yeah, I just, I do think Texas A&M and Oregon, while they were both top 10 teams coming in at the season, I think there was a proof of concept with Dan landing in Oregon that wasn't there with Michaelco and Texas A&M, including being in the college football playoff, semi-final last year, including the only team that Oregon lost to last year was Indiana, the national champion. And you brought a lot back. And I know that there've been a multiple entries at a lot of levels, but it just does not seem right. And none of it, especially offensively, has seemed right. Defensively, there were some issues. It seems like they've kind of dialed it in a little bit, but not great, not great for the ducks. No. Good for Illinois though. Yeah. Good for Illinois. LSU Auburn, did it get much of your attention? Yeah. It was the 17th home loss for the Auburn Tigers in the last five years. But hey, at least they scored that touchdown late. Yeah. Killed my under. Oh, yeah, 21 carries for Brown for like a yard of carry. Yeah, 19 for 21, yeah. Yeah. I mean, look, I think Auburn came out with a. Some new wrinkles for Georgia. I think Georgia badly overlooked Auburn probably during the week, not just on game day. And Auburn played really hard and got the breaks. And we talked about this in big game breakdown. I think that was the absolute best thing that could have happened to LSU because LSU under coach that has kind of a history of maybe like slipping on the banana peel in these road games was able to say, hey, look, these dudes just went to Athens and won. You got to take this stuff seriously. And they did. But I mean, for the most part, it looked pretty damn good. Good. Yeah. And like number. I mean, trade as greenback was notable in Harris had a huge game. Like Harris is kind of developing into a dude for them Jackson Harris. Last year, Jackson Harris last couple of weeks has been very much the guy. Dude tendencies, like that, calling that out right there LSU now six and two hits the off week. They'll return to action with an absolute monster Alabama Texas Tennessee. So the question is does an LSU fan feel blank about the six and two start better because a lot of teams around the sport are imploding in real time. I think you're happy with the record. You're happy with where you stand. I don't think you're happy. I think I think you're not happy to have two losses already. I think you're accepting. But I think also if you are objective in your fan hood and you're trying to figure out what your team is, you're still looking back and saying the teams we've beaten are Clemson, Louisiana Tech, A&M, McNeese, Mississippi State without Camario and Auburn. Yeah. And our next three games are Alabama, Texas and Tennessee, like not a single team that we would say is top 25 caliber, but they've beaten so far. But all three of those teams are flawed. They are. Yeah. None of those teams you should feel outclassed by. No. They could win any one of those games. No, they might win. No, right. But this is not margin for error. In terms of your game structure stuff, like you get your tough games at home. This is why we liked this schedule so much for LSU in the preseason. It's still true, like they haven't changed the location of the games. If you can't go on the road and beat Tennessee, right, a team that can't score on anybody really, like that's on you. You should be able to hold them to something in the teens or to low 20s. And if you have Lane Kiv and a $50 million roster, you should be able to find a way to score in the 20s and beat them. 100%. Do you have a Miami pit? The handshake and some highlights, but no, when, no, I watched like the first 10 minutes of it. And then I was like, I don't need to watch this anymore. I figured Miami would come out sharp after how sloppy they were last week. Do we have audio of the handshake? No, I don't think so. Okay. Because that'd be cool. I'm sure they'll just say a very nice game. No, no, I'm just saying like, I wonder if Miami like Mike DeMario for one of their like recap videos and, you know, that I, I don't want to listen to that between Mario and Pat. Yeah. Because Pat talked all week about him. Like truthfully talked about Miami, you know, trying to take their quarterback. Mmm. And then he said Mario plays by his own rules. He does. Yeah. Spot the lie. I'm just, who, who else in the ACC can operate the way that Mario does nobody. Nobody. That's the thing. It's like Mario is treating the rest of the ACC the way that Miami treated the big East. That's the thing about wearing the throwbacks that made it hit so hard today is that they are running that conference the way that Miami ran the big East when they were wearing those 2001 orange uniforms. I'm not saying Miami is destined for the national championship. What I'm saying is that the reason why all this is coming together in a way that's sticky in a way that I think is sustainable is because if anyone is going to recognize what's going to cut it and what's not, it's going to be Mario. Like that is what's making this you laid the foundation of the expectations and the standard for those first two years when you're not getting it done and then you continue to get better and you reevaluate and you bring in Shannon Dawson and now all of a sudden here's what you've got right now right now with Darian Mensa as you've got cam ward production with Carson Beck's winning. You've got a team that isn't as good defensively as last year. You've got a team that's better offensively than what you had last year. You've got a player Malachi Tony is uniquely gifted as one of the top five or six most impactful players in the entire country. And so for the first time since people have been starting to talk about the you being back, you've got a team that's worthy of it and it was cool because they were legitimately wearing 2001 national championship team uniforms with the 2001 national championship team in the house and they were putting up a 50 burger against pit. Like what is more 2001 Miami Hurricanes than throwing up a 50 burger on a celebratory Saturday is pit. I just I don't know it was a it was a good day for Miami football. They they keep smashing bad teams at it I barely saw any of the game. I don't have much. Tony's like Tony continues to be amazing and I do have some like know how to side here right like I have a little bit of concerns about their consistency on offense. You know like last year's team could pretty reliably go and get you through yards when you need it, especially down the stretch. This year's team I think is way less physical along the lines of scrimmage. I would push back on this note that your memory of the team in the playoff was more physical than they were in the regular season that's that's actually probably true. Their failures in the two losses during the regular season might echo some of your concerns now. Yeah. That if I'm a Miami fan, that's where I'm just kind of hoping that they can just tap back into it, right? You know, it's like, you know, you come basketball, it doesn't matter where we're at for in the tournament. You know, like who knows we could be able to put this thing together and go on a run. I think that's my fans in the chat also not happy that Tony's returning punts when they're up 30. Heisman. Heisman. Yeah. Fair. I mean, that's that's the only reason for it. You're trying to win the Heisman. Well, it is also again, the same coach who was running when he could have me old. So that's what this is. This is Heisman. They're trying to get him stats because you got you got to catch Jeremiah, which honestly you might because Jeremiah is going to be playing with Luke Feige for a while. Maybe the year. We'll see. Oh, who you got? Heisman Trophy. Right now. Yeah. I would vote for Jeremiah right now. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I'm not asking who you would vote for, but Jeremiah, Jeremiah Smith, you have say, well, I'd receive her as a, like, oh, yeah, of course, he's going to win it. Felt a lot better before Julian Saiyan's injury. I mean, I mean, look, trended out as a chance to light up all of them, right?
If he pulls the win over Georgia, then Ole Miss can go to the playoff. And that's a pretty cool story for the guy that came out of college. I mean, he had a suit to come back to college, obviously, and he's pretty old. But like, he's a name voters will vote for. They know who he is. He does have big time stats, but it's probably whoever balls in the Miami game in South Bend. That's going to say that. Now you that religious person. Which is what we said all year. Miss averse car whoever wins or maybe Tony if he goes for like 180 or something, right? We argue with Danny about this about a month ago now. Like, basically, would you take Notre Dame money line at plus 20 to 1 right now? Because that's basically what you're doing with CJ Carr. To make the playoff even. No, no, I'm saying Notre Dame versus Miami. Would you take their money line if it was like plus 2000? Because if they win and beat Miami, CJ Carr is going to have to play well to do so. I would take Notre Dame plus 2000 to beat Miami in South Bend. I'm looking at Oklahoma State remaining schedule because like, Mester Baker went off today again. I mean, I was Colorado, but yeah, they were losing that game at halftime. Like that defense suck. So he, like, it's not like he's coming out of games, guys, like, yes, yes to play the full 60. Yeah. So his Iowa State, Kansas State, Texas, tech, Arizona State, and Kansas. So if they knock Texas tech out with a good performance, he's going to light up those a lot of other four probably, maybe. Did you see Connor Stallion's tweet? Yes. Yes, it was layers. Okay. We are going to give it some shine. I thought it was funny. It was funny. Yeah. It was funny. A lot of funny tweets on Saturday, though. CJ Carr was there for Tommy Carr's game. And he said so. So when CJ Carr goes to see Tommy Carr, it's a great heartwarming story. But when my friend goes to see my day, my son, Ryan, my son, Ryan day. Oh, yes, it's going to strike her. Pete Damolthus of it. Love you, Pete. Yeah, I don't think CJ Carr was, I don't think he got anything out of scouting Indiana. That we know who might statement a playoff. Yeah. You never know. Never know. Coming up on the other side, we open the book up more of our takeaways from week eight, re-ranking the top 25 and more books. Back here on the cover three podcast, a little bit of a hot seat corner, good chance to hit on the job that did open and also a couple other interesting results that might spark those kinds of conversations Friday night, NC State loses at Stanford. And then on Saturday, change of leadership, the new classy, I mean, the class, we don't fire them. We just announced a change of leadership now. It's NC State's moving on. Year 14 of Dave Doran ends up being his last with the program. This is a, this was a team that very clearly had a come to the table and show me how much you're invested in the season and they lost the game, they absolutely should not lose. So if you're looking around and if you are trying to be motivated to provide the funds, I think it was $9.75 million was the buyout plus also whatever you'd have to invest in. And this day and age, that's a bargain, it's all you only got to pay $10 million to fire your coach. Yeah. I'm jealous. Jeez. Yeah, consider, consider the surroundings in the context here, Tom. Yet this is a decision that I think, you know, if Wake Forest and Stanford are embarrassing you and Virginia and you're the NC State Wolf Pack, it is fair to say we would like as an, as an administrator. I think it's fair to say we would like to at least seek new opportunities after 14 years. Sometimes it just runs its course, you know, like I think Dave Doran did really a very nice job at NC State for a long time, you know, and they just haven't been able to get the metric back. Yeah, I mean, it's, every coach is basically, you know, you either retire or you get fired pretty much how it goes, you know what I mean, like you was there for 14 years and they had a lot of good seasons and it just, it was done and you need to change and it sucks that it ended this way. It sucks that it ends in the middle of the season after a pretty embarrassing loss to Stanford, like obviously you'd prefer to end at the end of the year on his own terms if you're Dave Doran, but just not many coaches get that. There could be a defensive coordinator opening and champagne next year, though Dave, so keep your head up. I forgot about you. Let's go. It's funny. You mentioned that though, Tom, because honestly, I think a lot of people, I don't want to speak for, I don't want to speak for anyone individually or even a sect of the, the NC State fan base, but you said defensive coordinator, but I think the defense was the thing that was more frustrating than anything else that when they lost Tony Gibson, they just, when they lost Peyton Wilson, they just, I mean, they, they went from a team that was producing legitimate NFL talent on the defensive side of the football, playing games a certain way, winning games a certain way, and when that stopped happening, man, it just looked like your, looked like your year 14 coach had lost his fastball, you know, like that Davis Warren's throwing it all over the yard. Geo Lopez is throwing it all over the yard and much love to Davis and Geo, but come on. Like this, this is the same group that had Peyton Wilson and Bradley Chubb, and you know, just like lots and lots and lots of high quality players on the defensive side of the football. And it just, the structure there, the inability to get stops in these games. If I'm to micro, then I'd probably say that's what I point to. If I'm to macro, and as my friend, Joe, Jillio said, they've got to write just brothers problem. You never close your eyes anymore when I kiss your lips. They just like every little thing, it started rubbing them the wrong way. Dave gets up there after the app state game, all ordinary about all the bad fan comments. You know, we won that game. He comes out, you know, after the Louisville win, everybody's been saying we're so shitty and blah, blah, blah, blah, like that relationship had run its course. I thought that Joe did a great job. I mean, just it had been it, you know, and this loss is what leads to a mid season move instead of an end of season or late season move. Those comments by Dave, to me, sounded like a guy that really wanted to say like, you guys are so ungrateful. Have you seen what I've done here? Like, we don't have any money to keep those guys like a Peyton Wilson or Bradley Chubb nowadays. They transfer out. Right. We can't afford it. Brandon C. Say is what I've always heard was the one that broke him. Yeah. Brandon C. Say is he's classic. We can't afford to keep these guys anymore. Yeah. Like, what the hell do you guys want me to do? I'm elite a player evaluation. I go and I find these guys that are three stars and I bring them into my house and we develop them. And they turn into third round NFL draft picks that help us win nine games a year. And now I cannot keep them in the same way that I used to. And we talked about this in the preseason. They were probably going to need bait like given what the rest of the roster and their money situation. They were going to need Bayley to be an absolute superstar and he just wasn't. Is this the top 50 job? Whoa. It's a top 69 job, I just don't think I don't know if the difference between 20 and I don't know if the difference between 24 and 55 is that big. Ooh. I think the money starts to drop off a cliff pretty fast like like 24 I think it's got a lot more money than 50. Maybe they're top 40. I don't know. I don't think it's a top half job in the P4. No, I don't either. No. Really? Definitely not. No. It's probably middle of the pack ACC given what they spend. It's like there's not a single big 10 job or SEC job that I'm taking it over. Right. You're being paid like maybe for security I would take NC State over a few months. I would say Maryland. First like yeah, you would take Maryland, right? I would not. No, I think I'd rather have NC State. I'd rather have NC State than Maryland. The great unknown is like, okay, if they go higher Philip Rivers, are they going to get a bunch of donations coming in? You know, I think that's the hope. Maybe Phil can pay some of it his own. I mean, Phil made plenty of money in the NFL and he's got like 80 kids. He could put them to work.
to help raise some funds. - Yeah, what are the child labor laws in Carolina, Chip? - Let's find out. What if Philip Rivers gets the job in his entire coaching staff as his children? - You do money. - You do know that Gunner is committed, right? - Yes, that's why everybody thinks Philip Rivers has taken the job. It's gonna go coach his son, he's gonna go like Dion. See, I even tweeted it. Maybe if you've spent more time online, you would know what I know. - What time? - I. Do you remember when Dick Cheney picked himself? Like he was in charge of picking the vice presidential candidate. He was nominated and he was like, "Hey, we're gonna pick Dick Cheney." And he's like, "I looked at everybody and I'm gonna pick myself." - Well, that's the best candidate. - Yeah. - Are you saying Dick Cheney's gonna be the new NC State coach 'cause I got news for you too. - All right. - I don't think he's available. - I'm not online enough to know. - If you spent more time online, you would know that Dick Cheney died a while ago. - It tickled me deeply when somebody was like, "What if Phil just picks himself?" Like, what if you get Phil to lead the search in the name of the. In the name of the like, "Oh, gosh, are. " 'Cause we did just hire Justin Gainey former NC State men's basketball star to lead the basketball team. So like, what if? What if? - I don't know. - You tell me, like, how realistic do you think it is? You're the one that lives there. - I think that there's a. There has been with Dave Doran an extreme disconnect between the fan sentiment and the administration. That the fact that Dave has run a mostly clean program with consistent results and like great season ticket renewals and great spot, everything about the business of NC State football has been mostly healthy. But things clearly have turned toxic in a way that have motivated enough people to push this thing in a new direction. And now we enter that zone where if you were the one, 'cause this is what happens at one of these middle of the tier power conference schools, if you were the one who helped make the firing happen, you are probably the one who helped make the next hire happen. And maybe when I say one, I mean five or six people, but typically those two things are related. Hey, if we think this could happen, I'd be more motivated to help out with this. So we'll see, there's a couple of names. I think that would also make sense as well, but the specter of Phil is not fake without a doubt. People want it, how about that? There are people who would want it and it's real. And I'll share this. I texted this to Richard. Richard and I were texting about this. Richard Johnson, like excellent CBS sports insider. I said, "When you are a lifetime 500 program, investing in feelings might actually be a good business decision, even if it's not a good long-term football decision." - That makes sense, yeah. - You know, like is hiring Philip Rivers the very best thing to set us up for sustained success over the next 20 years? I don't know. But would it lead to a rush of donations and securing that Gunner comes and keeping everything somewhat steady, possibly? - Oh my God. - Sorry, you guys just saw this damn peer interception? - No, I'm looking at you. - But I've seen enough. - Did he get a taunting the use and sideline too after this? - No, he didn't flag it. Okay, I saw the ref come over and then reach. All right, never mind. But he did throw a ridiculous pic. All right. There's so many layers to this NC State thing, man. Like, you know, we have no idea what's gonna happen with conferences, probably during like the first contract that is signed, you know? Look, as they take a shot, like what if Gunner's for real? - Oh yeah, I mean, and what if just, what if Phil's able to come in at 3.25 and then you're able to just pump a bunch of money into the roster? - I mean, look, like that's actually given the way that the ACC set up their success initiatives. If you're an AD in the ACC, you actually need to be tying your coach contracts to this sum. Hey, man, look, like there's no mystery as to what we make if we accomplish this or this or this. And we're willing to compensate you like really, really well if we hit some of these things. You know, Miami's scoop in like north of 60 million from their check this year, right? Like a foreign state, which doesn't deserve it at all, right? Obviously, well, they get the TV ratings, you know, like part, obviously the success initiative is, no, the eyeball initiative is yes. Like, NC State's not like a total zero on ratings. They have like really passionate fan base. They show up like, I think it's a sneaky underrated stadium. I think it can be a really good culture, you know, it's just, are they gonna like actually fund the roster? I don't know, maybe they will. - Tom, if we had done sirens in the middle of the day, who would you have mentioned as your candidate? - Phil Rivers. And that's it. And then I would have said, that's the end of our emergency podcast. - Jamie Chaddwell, Jamaica Shepherd. - Scott Satterfield. - Sure. - I think that's a hard sell. - Yeah, of course it does. - Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. All right, just make sure I'm, yeah. - No, but I'm filling it out with someone who would make themselves available. - Shane even? - Charles Huff. - Hmm. - Probably not. - Brian Kelly. - Brian Kelly. - I feel like Charles Huff, after being in the SEC, is a big 10 SEC only at this point. - Billy Napier. - You know, there is no-- - You got it. - Neil Brown? - Neil Brown. - I've got his one. Yeah, Neil Brown would be interesting. Yeah. - No, Texas is not bad. - Got other games to talk about here. - Chadwell, honestly. Like now that he's healthy, they look good. - Yep. - What about-- - Mike Bobo. - Mike Bobo. - There it is, there it is. - Thank you, Tillgate. - Yeah, let's go. Baylor lost the Kansas. Dave Oranda? - Baylor blew it against Kansas. They didn't just lose. - Elaborate? - I think it was-- - They were winning the game. - I can't remember what this they were up. At least I'm pretty sure they were, unless I'm thinking of a different game. But let me see. - It was pretty back and forth the whole day. Baylor did go up. I think the Kansas could go for a fourth down on their own and didn't get it. Baylor goes up and then they can't use drives and scores in there. - Baylor was up 21 to 10 after three quarters. - I mean, like for the most of the first half, it looked pretty even. And then Baylor, well, they have a four point lead and then they scored a touchdown to go up, yeah. Okay. - I mean, that was, Dave Oranda might be fired tomorrow. - Davao to Baylor? - From the Davao might be fired tomorrow. - They might. - No. - No, they're gonna wait on that, right? - Yeah. - I think that's, you're losing at home to Virginia Tech in their first year under the new coach. - Hey, hey, they hit an explosive pass, though. - They did, actually, like, it was great. And all genuineness, like after Virginia Tech takes the lead and they're like, all right, take time to start throwing down field. And he actually starts hitting some throws. And it's like, well, maybe, sure, text dropping way off, which makes it far easier to do. But it was just like, maybe they should try this more often. But they're so terrified of doing it. - They played like idiots in the closing stretch of that game. So, yeah, they deserve to lose. - Were you guys shocked that James went for it? - Yes. - Me too. - I would have bet on one of you. - He was gonna kick it. - 16, 16, go to overtime, let's go. Yeah. - They did miss a field goal. Pretty important one this year already. - True. - Yes. - True. But still, that was, we've got a whole new James Franklin on our hands, boys. The gambler. - Well, I mean, that's why he was so excited when Luke Reynolds came back to the sideline. He was giving them all the, like, the energy. He's like, oh, buddy. 'Cause he saw a grunk of mine just off one leg fading back or shut that thing up into the air. - To a wide open, hey, why would we cover that guy? - Yeah. - Luke Reynolds in the end, so. - It's only the, yeah. - And what was it, the roughing the passer, the roughing the kicker. The, I mean, some pretty bone headed plays coming down the stretch. I did not see TCU losing the web.
Virginia, but that was another hot seat thing that I'd flagged. Am I off on that? Should I not, should I go hands off on a, on a TCU hot seat watch? No, no, like in those circles, it's, it seems hot. I thought. Yeah. I didn't see the game so I don't want to comment specifically, but losing at home to West Virginia is not advantageous towards improving your hot seat situation. Same. Yeah. I got about 30 games in today. That was not one I watched. Okay. Well, I didn't really see much of that at all. Take me anywhere else you want to go. How about USC Wisconsin? Oh, for the badgers. Our bias, we have not talked like Wisconsin did a good thing. So of course, we ignored it until, you know, the, the 93rd minute of the show. Well, we aren't anti badger podcast. That's correct. All we have been, all of it. Yeah. Of course, we are. Look, let's, let's put $3 in the tip jar and talk about this thing. All right. So honestly, like early on, USC turns it over twice. They're down for nothing. And I'm like, they actually kind of look fine. You know, like they're moving the ball. Wisconsin's offense looks like crap. And then Wisconsin just kind of turned up the physicality of notch, man. Honestly, like they started really getting after the QB. They started winning a lot of scrimmage started running the ball a little bit better. And USC just did not match it up, right? Like they didn't get to that level of intensity. I thought that Wisconsin got to. And I didn't see this margin getting out this big because the world series came on and it's like, all right, they've kind of got this in hand now, but they must to score to one late. Yeah. Okay. That does make sense. Ryan in the chat says when the left guard went out for USC. Yeah. Yeah. It was like damn broke. Yeah. I sent something to strike or strike or if you if you have time to put it up, do it. If not, I'll just I'll say it out loud. This was my favorite part of this game. Wisconsin won by 17 with 200 yards of offense and Colton Joseph putting up that stat line. That would be 12 for 14 passing. Yes, 12 for 14. Wow. So accurate for 58 yards, 14 pass attempts, 58 yards, but a touchdown in no interceptions. There's no whoopsie and no daisy exactly in that line. Exactly. And that is what Luke fickle and that offensive staff are like, all right, buddy, we got to take care of the football. So you are just going to hand off, but forward. And it worked because we get like the thing about this Wisconsin team is their defense is legitimately good. And they can run the ball sometimes. They're not always getting right in the ball. But if they just get average, just quarterback play from their quarterback, they can beat a lot of teams in the big toe. And just don't turn the ball over and don't do a whole bunch of stupid stuff. And we've got a chance. And that was exactly the game plan here. They've got the perfect high floor low ceiling profile for college football in 2026. And you look at their schedule. Okay. And it's not nothing new. We talked about it earlier. Yeah. We talked about it all year, but their next game, they're on the road at Iowa, which can't overlook legitimately tough game. Halloween, you know, rivalry. Like they're probably under now and I would think like, what was fandal high that like I, Iowa three, I probably three, three and a half. Yeah. Like, but if they come, if they get out of there with a win, their next three games after that are Rutgers at Maryland at Purdue. And then they finish with Minnesota. Like if Wisconsin beats Iowa, it's not out of line that they're finishing 10 and 2. And they might be in the big 10 championship. They might be giving an out large. I do not think Wisconsin would get an out large over if everybody else is nine and three and eight and four. I don't think 10 or two Wisconsin is going to go over these nine and three teams from the SEC. Yeah. We can't rule that out. We cannot rule it out. I like it. I agree with you. Sure. But like nine and three LSU reluctantly nine and three Alabama. Oh, well, that Bama's no question. Like, yeah. But I think we can keep adding more names to this list in terms of who might be there because right now nine and three Michigan is going to clear clear 10 and two. Oh, do we are not going to say if you're 10 and two Wisconsin and your losses are Notre Dame in a possibly a UCLA team that is still undefeated. Who are your wins? USC Iowa. Okay. So the Minnesota team, it's probably going to be ranked tomorrow. Let's assume USC goes into the ditch and finishes seven and five. Right. I was going to finish what? Seven and five. I don't know. If you have a win over them, that's not a real right there, right? Iowa could easily finish nine and three. Probably not with Wisconsin beating them. If they lose to Wisconsin, they've got Northwestern Purdue, Illinois and Nebraska after that. You're telling me Iowa can't win those games? I mean, what you're expected out of those four, like 2.3. I would my expected 3.8 just because they're Iowa. That's fair. Yeah. Those are all old big, what big 10 West teams? Yeah. Yeah. All right. And what's the expected scores of those games, Tom? Eight to four. 17, 13, 13, nine, you know, like just go ahead and throw them out all out there. What about the USC side of this? Like Trojan's fans are furious. It should be. Wouldn't you be like, that's embarrassing. Like I, I, I, if you hire Lincoln Riley and if it's Jade Miveus, third year in the program and you've spent as much on this roster, both with the freshmen and the portal editions and the portal editions are also wide receiver. Yes. You're upset. And your next two games are Ohio State and Indiana and then UCLA to finish the year. Like you might finish seven and five. Then again, you might turn around a Bito, Ohio State. This is a crazy season. Is that, that would be a perfect college football result? Yeah. I mean, the game is in LA. In fact, I'm getting ready. I'm sprinkling USC right now for next week. Put it on, put it on Thursday's sheet. I'll probably end up doing it. Ohio State week off long travel. Does you, do USC fans want to win that game? Probably not. Yeah. Right. Exactly. I, I think they're about done with the show. Really? Yeah. Okay. I mean, I, it's been a while. Do you think it happens tomorrow? No. No, I think USC fans are dumb. So I don't know if the, if the administration is right. I think that's still a big check, right? But I, oh, I don't think that when, when I saw, um, when I saw, when we can always tell when the insiders, like different insiders can signal different sources, the administration is signaling like, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, Lincoln Riley is not untouchable. He is not bulletproof here. Like that had already been done earlier this season, which means 24 to seven lost to Wisconsin, done, cut it. And if they're smart, they will start, um, running some like promo packages for Ohio State fans to make the trip to LA to help sell out that stadium to raise funds. Because I don't think there's going to be a lot of USC fans in the call. See them next week. Agreed. Yeah. Will USC still be inside the top 25? Well, reranking the top 25 is sponsored all season long by Modelo. College football season is Modelo season. The fight songs, the fan quakes, the rivalry trophies are all better with an ice cold Modelo in your hand. It's not just game day. It's tradition. And those who keep college football traditions alive, deserve a Modelo. Modelo is the official beer sponsor of the college football playoff. So as we mentioned earlier, number one, Miami took care of business. So no changes at the top. Number two, BYU loses. You're going to get kicked back down. So this is the first, uh, difficult wrinkle to figure out because what do you do with BYU when they take their first loss, they take it to an unranked team, but they've got the win against Notre Dame. I don't think BYU's going to fall that far. If you look a little bit further down, Texas tech has the Houston win, which could be adjusted as you talk currently as a 14 to 13 lead with a couple minutes left there in Salt Lake City. Uh, so that still has to be adjusted in terms of what Houston might end up doing. Is it fair to keep BYU pretty high based on the Notre Dame win? Would you still respect a head to head here? I will be shocked if BYU was still ranked at a Notre Dame tomorrow. I have Notre Dame ahead of BYU in my projection. Of course. Yeah. It's tough to square because like, I test it. I definitely don't think BYU is a top ten caliber team, but I do think you have to respect them playing extremely well against the Irish, you know? So I slotted them temporarily ahead of Indiana. That's fine. I don't feel like Indiana.
and has done anything to deserve very much. Yeah, that's what I was saying, Tom. I honestly, I would start considering putting UCLA, yeah, okay. I would start considering putting UCLA ahead of Indiana. If Utah wins, I would consider putting Utah ahead of Indiana. I would consider putting Kentucky ahead of Indiana right now. Schedule wise though, Indiana and UCLA are free for a part. Performance wise, not so much, yeah. But the quality, but for BYU, the win over Notre Dame is better than anything Indiana can say or anything UCLA can say. Yeah, correct. Oh, God, yeah. Okay. It's one of the best wins of the season period anybody has. I've got Oklahoma state breaking in. We talked about Drew Mestermaker earlier. I do have got Wisconsin breaking in as well. I had Minnesota as another team to watch there. We've got Iowa and USC dropping out. I don't think Tennessee falls all the way out after the taking on that second loss and Ole Miss and other SEC team that's taking on that second loss. There's just a whole gang of those SEC two loss teams that are just kind of all in that pack. Florida was off this week, Missouri was off this week, but that would be, you know, Missouri and Tennessee and Florida and Ole Miss and LSU. They're just all a big ol' tangle of Christmas lights. Just wait and get untangled by the time we get to the holiday season where a few more results, few more losses will be able to figure that portion of the rankings out, but a bit of a log jam here. We've got, if you're watching along on youtube.com/cover3, the full breakdown pre-update after Utah Houston. Any, anything stand out to you, fellas? Yeah, I'm surprised you have Texas Tech not dropping more. Houston win. I mean, again, we'll see after Houston Utah's final, right? But. Like I, you've got to hit, you've got to hit. If you shot me, the voters drop Texas Tech below like, Ole Miss and LSU. Oh, but that's not that different. Like for right now, the way it was submitted before we went live two hours ago, I was using one loss, Texas Tech, potentially. Oh, to one loss, Texas Tech, definitely, potential one loss, Houston as the anchor point. Are the allegations true that you're getting paid by Cody Campbell? No. Sounds like something you would say if you were being paid by Cody Campbell. I think that you would know if I was being paid by Cody Campbell. There would be signs. It would be signs. It would not be my existence. Chip would be talking about like how oil. He's rocking the John Mayer. So it's like, guys, have you seen "Crew" this week? I've had a lot more bracelets, you know. I don't have a leather strap. I would go with the undershirt with like the button down that's unbuttoned over top of it, you know? Yeah. Not but it's, it was a week where in terms of the overall 25, we're not throwing a bunch of names in and out. Though we'll say this one last one. I know that especially since we're starting to get closer to the college football playoff rankings release, the AP Top 25 is not going to take as much interest, but while it still does, only 32 teams got votes last week. I think it's going to be closer to 40. You look at the teams that were other receiving votes that lost James Madison. Bye bye. You know, like there's a bunch of teams that were around the ballot cut last week that all lost. So I do think we're going to have a little bit more of a grabback. I mentioned Minnesota was in there earlier. If New Mexico wins, I think New Mexico's going to get a good bit of attention as well. Since the nadi, you know, that's another team that you got to keep your eye on in terms of being five and two. Having that big win, you know, like that's going to be one that's just going to get a couple votes. Not one that overwhelmed me in terms of beating out some of those teams that were above them, but still I think it's going to be a little bit less clear than it was last week when we had 32 teams for 25 spots and for 24 of the 25 spots. It was like more than two-thirds representation had them on the ballot. So more than 67% of the AP voters last week, more or less, were dialed in on the same 24 teams and everyone just had their own flavor of the week for 25. I think it'll be a little bit more widespread this week. Any other top 20. >> That makes sense. And Chip, I think what struck me like was just with the way we show the bracket or the poll on screen, like there's like a left column right column. I was like, oh, shoot, Texas Tech is still left column, right? But like, obviously, you're right. Like, it's only four spots different. >> Yep. >> And that was the re-ranking the top 25 sponsored by Modello. While the rankings may change from week to week, Modello will always be at the top of our list as the perfect companion for a college football Saturday. Remember, college football season is Modello season. >> And Utah is going to win because they just, yeah, they just sack fumble on a wagon. And the must, which is not respected by Chip Patterson, is going crazy. >> Number 90, by the way, Mo, I think his name is for Utah. I do, he's been all over the screen tonight, like, shouts that guy. Unblockable. Sorry about your over-chip. >> I don't feel bad about the ones that miss hilariously wrong. I feel bad when you get kicked in the groin by a Tulsa team that has the ball first in 10 at the 18 yard line, and you're up a touchdown. And then you get a holding call to negate a touchdown. And then you get kicked out of field goal range, and then you miss a field goal. And then you get a penalty to extend the other drive. And then it all starts to snowball. But this one doesn't hurt top of the Tulsa one hurt. >> Hey, Striker. Could you do me a favor? You put up the comment from B.M. McShe's 16. Buddy, you've been in the chat all night saying that I'm going to pretend Indiana is bad, so I don't have to admit that Michigan has a good defense. You know what? I'll give you what you want. Michigan's defense is great. It's on your four and three season, congrats on being one in three in conference play, losing three of your last four, including home games to Iowa and Indiana. >> And bro, thanks defense to Spell with the seat. >> I know. So you're Canadian, which thank you for coming to our wonderful country and watching our wonderful sport. But there you go. Michigan's got a good defense. It hasn't really done a whole hell of a lot for you. >> Oh, the Tar Heels lost his girlfriend on it, yeah. >> How are we giving up 455 yards of offense to the circuit? >> Steven Jellie, man. >> Okay, sure. >> Steven Jellie. >> Yeah, sure. He's a weapon. >> RIP. >> Calvin Russell, by the way. >> Yeah. >> I'm sorry. >> I'm sorry. >> I'm sorry. >> Yeah. >> Look at that. It was very much like the Clemson game. They thought they'd done enough to win. And they left and they went to Bob's. You know? I'm like, oh, yeah. We're good. We're good. We're good here. Everybody good? All right. Cool. I'm gonna go. You know? We had Joyner Jamboree on Friday night. A lot of parents bounced before a cleanup time. Very much the attitude of the North Carolina Tar Heels football team. I've worked cleanup time and now there's spider webs and skeletons left all over the social service officer's room. I cleaned that up. Come on. Shout out to PJ Clark, the producer of the shotgun start, Syracuse grad and the New York Jets fan who for the first time in his life now knows what it's like to beat Bill Belichick in a football game. I do not appreciate that Tom. I'm not going to do a PJ impression, but I appreciate that you shouted that out. Anything else? Full, like, full go. We're at 151. Wait. Did you toss score touchdown? Yes. Yeah. Why? Because we're trying not sure. I did it before the two minute. I did it before the two minute warning. Just run out the clock. What are you doing? How? Houston. Probably I wasn't watching. I'm assuming Houston let them score. It happens so fast that I actually did not look over and see the play because I was trying to like do the thing where we look at each other when we talk, which I'm not good at already. So, you know, like, all right, some other games as we investigate this, Jets says they let them score. Dan Peer scored and just Oklahoma's defensive line way too much from Mississippi state. Now, Camario got hurt again early in the game. At that point, I turned it off. I was Camario in the game. Okay. Thank you. I have played this kid. I had Turf Toe in high school. Okay. It sucks and it doesn't go
away for months unless you don't do anything, taking a week off. If he was not able to play on it last week, taking a week off wasn't going to heal it to where he would have been better to play this week. There was no reason for him to be out there. If it's turf toe, there's it made no sense. And then what did he do? He re aggravated it because guess what? It was still messed up. If he can't play with it last week, there's no way he should have been playing with it today. But it's Mike got turf toe. All right. Damn it. All right. So I thought about this. This was not a big game breakdown type game, but if we had, I was going to ask you like, are you got four wins? You got a chance to actually make a bowl game. Oh, rest them up for a win the point coming up that you have no chance and held a block in Oklahoma and Texas. And then you get Vandy, right? And you get Auburn, and you get Tennessee Tech, and you get Ole Miss. Man, like what are we doing? I was I mean, this is you had a chance to block Oklahoma and Texas. I mean, I thought that I was feeling patronizing for being like, good day for Oklahoma. You know, you deserve it. You're defense has been too damn good this year. You guys needed to win a game based on the fast three field goals today. But like that was one of the reasons like I made the three star the Mississippi State team total under it says like, there's no way they're going to play them. And then they did. Tough. Yes. One of 11 on third down. Okay. That's how many turnovers? John Matier with a couple of really nice emergency shovel passes. I like hearing that roll. That's good. Just chucking it is about to get hit flinging it away at high speed. But if the defense if the defense is spent let's say what 80% of its time on the field winning snaps like from a success rates perspective. 80% is obviously not what their success rate is. But just like in general, it feels like the defense is mostly doing its job most of the season. Good. Defense like to win. All right. The big play of satan. You haven't seen enough of those this year. It was nice. Nice little throwback to last season. I still can't believe Utah scored. All right. Cal was losing or SMU was losing to Cal at the half and 159 to the top. They had like 28 plays of 10 plus yards. That's pretty good. What else here. Boise Washington state. I got a little bit of eyes on this. That game was close for three quarters. And then Boise completely turned it on the fourth. I was very surprised that like the kugers were hanging around. They like Boise just couldn't finish. You know, and they were they ran for seven yards of carry. At the time, I was like, they're moving it, but like they're not moving the scoreboard. And then in the fourth quarter, they move the scoreboard like a lot. The gains Riley one, two punch is just kind of that offense at this point. Did you guys see any of Arizona Iowa state? Yes. It was my three star. So Arizona wins this game 39 to three. But what I want to talk about is that Arizona's dash Fafita. You may recognize the name had two sacks in this game. Dash Fafita is five foot seven. And it is hilarious to watch a five foot seven linebacker blitz. And then when he gets to the line of scrimmage, he completely disappears for like a fraction of a second until he comes through on the other side and gets past that offensive line and gets to your quarterback. It is just not something I am used to seeing out of football field is a five seven linebacker blitzing from the second level and getting home because the quarterback clearly did not see him right in the offensive line. You know, else now you see it? The QB. Eyes up. Eyes up. There's a movie. And I'm bad with movie reference. I'll we'll come back to this Monday. Maybe. Yeah. What we've said quarterback bring your eyes down a lot this season. What quarterback brings their eyes down the most? Tommy Carr would have seen him. If only Tommy Carr played Arizona every year, every week, he'd be good. A guy who did it a lot against Tennessee did a little bit less today. Keelan, a couple of moments like that one interception was probably not necessarily. But like the good balls, like we were back to getting more good Keelan than bad Keelan and it bounced out because and they just had standard day from Marcel Reed with two fumbles, one loss and two bad picks and got the cover. I tweeted the joke, but I also meant it like there might be two or three quarterbacks on the planet who could throw that interception. Yeah. He cuts the way he escaped from like five tacklers before he had to throw it. Seriously, the most incredible interception I've ever seen. Like I would give him a plus grade just for the throw. The elusiveness grade exceeds the decision making negative. Yeah. I want the. A lot of people can throw that interception, Tom. Not a lot of people can get into the position to throw that interception. I want the, you know, Bambi has the camera on Ryan grub at all times. I want the video from that. Ryan grub. I mean, we had something a little league today. That was great. Ryan grub is going to hit that Mike Bobo position where the head coach loves him so much and the fan base is ready to just sell them out anytime anything goes wrong. It actually shows a healthy, healthy program. You got to have somebody you hate. Yeah. If you've done it, if there's not a coach or a player on your team, you hate then something, you know, something ain't right. People don't care enough. Period. If there's not a scapegoat. Yeah, you have to have a scapegoat. There's got to be somebody to blame when things go wrong, man. It's healthy. I, what do we want to do here? Do we want to declare? I didn't, I, I don't know if I feel good doing a Utah Houston breakdown. We want to stick around for this and we want to hit it in. I mean, we're, are we over two hours? Well, I need to, oh my. Is that Kobe or, or Mari? That's Kobe. I shot. Why did you toss score? This is just, the game should be over it. Oh, no. Oh, no. This is just and then Stratkier, can you somehow say I'm going to cast the flag, flag, flag, flag. I'm sure we won't get in trouble for that, right? I'm positive we will get in trouble for that. Can I just do like a live doodle of what I see on TV? You think your mark is going to turn us in after the day the big 12 had today? He might, you might write us a check for putting this on, bro. Although in fairness, we're going to bash big 12. Big 10 teams cumulatively went 90 points under the over under for the six big 10 games. That is an average of going under by two touchdowns per game. Oh, I do think defense. Try it. Yeah, I was going to say I did think that going from the Indian and Michigan. I was going up, baby. Yesterday's price is not the day's price. Indian and Michigan into UCLA Michigan state into Wisconsin, USC as the good old best and that's what an American through line of headliners was, uh, not and not that you could find other offerings that were, you know, sorry, sorry, you locals need points to be entertained. Indiana, Michigan, we'll we'll get ratings though. Mm-hmm. Not that we really care about that, but even not not being total company man, I did have on my notepad at one point that because the game was such a slog by the time we got to overtime, the theater was great. You know, like, yeah, big house is a hundred thousand people that have all given their whole day to this and they're like, Damien, if I'm going to still be here, let's make some noise and let's hopefully try to win this game. I did think this. I did think that the stage and the stakes, you know, felt were felt. It's time for the moths. That it. No flag. No flag. No flag in your face, Patterson. Wow. Three in five, three, four and one, three, five and one, right? I don't know what your record. I'm just saying you disrespected the moths and the moths just came through. Now, do you think you talking around at the clock here? No, I mean, I'm sure Houston has a timeout. Devon Danpeer getting his 75 yard touchdown run like, I am balling out. They're going to go like shovel pass and complete, you know, cubie sweep out of bounds. sky came is great right now we're finally getting all the rain that that
You thought or that you see F.U.I.E. was supposed to get by the way, dumb. Oh, you know, it didn't help the under, you had no help on the under there. We're weird, rain day, man. Like the bands that were coming in, like from Daytona just disappeared. Do you have a, do you have a weather dome? Not normally, I wish we did. I think the rays are building one. Yeah, working on it. All right. And it looks like they know what to do. Okay. Oh, oh, oh, oh, Neil. God, I thought he was going to peanut punch that out. Did you see, I'm about to say where Chip Patterson usually says on this show, but I'm going to refrain myself. But that was the, what are we doing? Okay. For the listeners at home, Damper holds the ball instead of kneeling, then turns to his left. So basically, making it like like his, his, you know, arm side is now his blind side. And a Houston guy comes unblocked because certainly if you're alive and blocking for a kneel down, you're not expecting to hold your block for like six seconds. Surely he's known by now, the right tackle fall at truck stamp here. And damn here, luckily, holds on to the ball. This would have been like a CJ Bailey-esque type moment, I think. Yeah. This is probably coached, I would think to like, I'm sure he told the way some time. But my God, bam, oh, like look at he sat there and like, he does try to peanut punch it. Yeah. And what's funny is like the Houston defense, you see, didn't even like, they stopped because they assumed he was going to kneel. And then he kept waiting for them. So that's when they started moving to go get him. That's not quite as bad as, uh, as Jenkins spunky, the ball on first and was it running? So we need to this week practice Utah. We are, we are undefeated. We're very happy about it. But we, we need to work on our end of game situation. Yeah. He's, I don't know what he's doing. Okay. Now, like, okay, the, now the Houston deep, like nose guard, like properly bull rush the heck out of the center, right? And damp here, instead of just like taking that other step back and kneeling, like did like a weird, like spin fall down, exposes back, uh, type, kneel. I just, we, we really, we really, we really, even really friends, like, what's going on? Like, just go backwards of three yards, man. We're going to have a bus return here. Yeah. Or the punter was effectively run the ball out of the end zone. Cause we've got a one, so I know he danced around a lot. Okay. So we're at one. So now you, now you, now you can't just spike it and snap it. Just shut it in the air, snap it. And then yeah, assuming damp here doesn't, you know, try to throw into coverage. Who would you take right now for BYU, Utah? BYU, I think I would take BYU. But BYU, I will say like Utah's defense played exceptionally well. I, I thought Houston was going to score on them and they, they played really well. Here we go. And the end of this game is sketch the end of the, the big 12 end of games today. It just been a wonderful, well, well, well coached, well managed, well played. We'll officiate it. So we're going to run around, right? It's just one second. Just don't drop it for two seconds. Oh, just run out the back of the end zone. Just catch the ball and then run to the back of the end zone. Don't dance, just run, do it. Not hard. Oh, a safety for Houston cover. How about just get in the gun, run four tight ends and throw and just kneel. It's going to take two seconds. What if we run a trick play right now, they won't now's the best time, actually. Yeah, what if we, what if we throw deep? Here's the thing, if you do it, right? Like if you just chuck it and you get the intentional grounding, then the clock stood zero. I were good. That's final. No, it is aster's, but he's a little dancing around far longer than he had to. I know, yeah, it's too much. Congratulations to you, you saw seven and oh, Hey, Morgan Scally, you know, I, you're seven to know, you're four and oh and big 12 play. The youths said goodbye to Kyle, waiting him and Kyle, waiting him lost. You told one, Utah is inside the top 10. We'll be moving up at least a couple spots after taking down Houston and, uh, and Michigan ain't nowhere close to that. So you told happy. Yeah, they won. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Did Utah win the divorce? Yeah, so far for sure. Kind of hard to argue the other side, although I mean, waiting him would tell you that they did hang close with the number six team in the country. So that says they're pretty good for me to fast one of the best teams in the country. Then we're pretty good, right? Oh, you caught that one too. Yeah, yeah. He was like, well, I mean, if you go through it, it's we're not running them all well or, uh, we're not scoring in the red zone and we're minus two in the tournament. I mean, it's kind of hard to win that way. I love how anybody's been around a while. They just like laid out bare and expect everybody in, in the assorted press as I, yes. The comment from MD night 2016, Scott Frost's got a ranked win before rule did it in Nebraska. Oh, wow. Yeah, that I had not thought it's not, it's not an incorrect statement, not an incorrect statement. And you know what, Scott Frost would have been more dialed into the significance of it. If he wasn't still so bewildered by the way the game ended, they asked him on the field. They were like, this is the highest ranked win for UCF ever. Scott, what does it mean to you? He was like, I have never been a part of the ending of a game like that. I'm happy for UCF, but I have never been a part of a game like that. He looked like you just interviewed a guy that just got out of like a high speed train crash and walked away. So he's like, I'm not sure what happened really happened to be alive. I mean, exactly like oh my goodness, congrats to the Utah youths 21 13 full transparency here. If something insane was going to happen, I didn't want to like end the stream, right? Shout out to app. Yeah, took down Jamie. First like, the Alwagens came and took over that program. Sean Clark passed. That was super sad. Like there's just kind of a weird couple of years for that very, very proud program. As we said on Thursday, it had beautiful weather and boon. It was the right time of season. Students showed out, fans showed out. They got an awesome epic win. I mean, it's all you could ask for for Sunbelt football. I thought it's right to Doug Gillan. It was calling out JMU, you know, and Dallas Loggins backs it up, says, uh, and we sent them out there, sent them out of the conference with the loss, even though they're planning in the conference again next year for now. So it was cool, cool for the mountaineers to be able to get a good win. Now the G6 race seems to be in New Mexico and Boise. Yep. Yeah. Anything else? No, I mean, we, we, we covered a lot of show. Yeah, we wouldn't have. Yeah, you know, we might as a record. I do think so. That's what I was thinking. As I was like, yeah, all the time of us sitting here being like, wait a second. Is Utah, is, is Utah about to blow this by scoring too fast? You know, because that could have been a moment, right? Yeah, you never know. We weren't we live when Mario didn't knew. I can't remember. People still talk about us being live when Mario didn't kneel. And specifically the two of you being like, what are you doing? I want to say that like Michael Snowden is in the chat right now. I'm pretty sure that he remembers that. And he's, he's an OG OG OG. I'm pretty sure that that's something that it definitely happened here. Jerry B also. Oh, sorry, rider boy. Hey, congrats to ball to the ball, ball sack winner ball state. Chip, I think you're going to win. That season went total, by the way. Sack under. Yeah. And Michigan state under looks great now. It's dicey, you know? Yeah. When they're pulling out the kitchen sink and the lesio is chucking around the yard against Northwestern. But, you know, things have developed.
