Week 8 Breakdown: AP Poll Debates, Overreactions, Coaching Carousel & MORE | Upon Further Review
1h 20m 4s
The Cover 3 podcast highlights the ongoing coaching carousel in college football, with key openings at NC State, Maryland, and Baylor. These shifts are driven by poor performance, declining fan engagement, and a need for program revitalization. The discussion emphasizes that financial stability, spending on talent, and long-term roster building are critical in evaluating coaching jobs. At Baylor, despite regional challenges, the program’s geographic expansion and strong recruiting potential make it a viable, though not elite, option in the Big 12. Similarly, NC State’s move follows a pattern of diminished performance and fan disillusionment, while Maryland is viewed as a secure, financially stable but underperforming option. The conversation also underscores that coaching success hinges less on individual talent and more on consistent team execution, culture, and strategic planning. The podcast ties these dynamics to broader trends in college football, such as the 24-team playoff format, which elevates competition and makes mid-tier programs more viable. A key theme is the importance of strength of schedule and recent performance in rankings and playoff projections. Meanwhile, the show celebrates UCF’s dramatic victory over BYU, noting its emotional impact and the critical role of player development under new head coach Scott Frost. The episode also features a detailed film breakdown of Cam Coleman’s near-misses against Ohio State and Ole Miss, illustrating how similar offensive concepts are misread or mishandled. The analysis concludes that while coaching talent matters, consistent execution and team chemistry are ultimately more decisive than any single play. The segment demonstrates how small, overlooked details—like a quarterback’s throwing mechanics or a fan base’s energy—can shape entire programs.

A.K.A.
The Cover 3 tailgate, where they are actively trying to hire and fire multiple Power 5 coaches.
Yes, we've got suggestions for Baylor and NC State.
We've got suggestions about who could be next at jobs that are already filled, because yes, indeed, it's spinning.
Let's not waste any time.
Striker, let's jump, I think for the first time this season, on the carousel.
Carousel.
Carousel.
Ah, yes, so good to see our friend Mel Tucker.
You know, that animation still lives on, and so does Mel Tucker with the phone.
Yikes.
Buy out money and everything else if you watch along on youtube.com slash cover3.
You get to see that.
Yes, the coaching carousel is in full swing.
I believe if we talk in technicalities, it was three Power 5 jobs opened in a five-day window.
And that extends all the way into Sunday with Baylor firing Dave Aranda.
Now we have Maryland, we have NC State, and as we just said, we have Baylor.
So, let's begin.
None of these, I think, are crazy surprises.
Danny, we talked a little bit about Dave Doran on Saturday night.
Is there anything about the NC State, the way it all kind of went down that stood out,
or any big reactions from you on that one?
No, I just think it was.
The, you know, up-and-down nature of the squad, a couple ugly losses.
Losing to Stanford is one that just puts kind of the nail in the coffin for you.
I think there were some that kind of going into this season were already kind of like,
I don't know if he was on any hot seats coming in, but definitely felt kind of NC State fans,
maybe a little bit, 14 years, a long time, just kind of maybe wishing for something,
something different, you know, just kind of got a little bit dull.
And I like Dave Doran a lot, but I do think there's sometimes when you're there for a long time,
the message fails to resonate.
You don't get the energy, enthusiasm from the fan base.
So, you know, I think it probably did feel like maybe, yeah, now's the time to make that move.
Yeah.
I think that sometimes the way that you prepare your fan base and your messaging going into the season
will also impact the reaction when the results don't follow.
Dave said, you know, I'm tired of being second place.
I'm tired of not being in that ACC championship.
Experts looked at NC State's ACC draw and said this is one of the more favorable paths
that you could have in terms of, you know, the chance to be able to log that 10-win season.
C.J. Bailey coming back.
I mean, the messaging, which is not, you know, fair or not, it's not fair to the players,
but the messaging about NC State and the way the fans felt was that this was going to be a big breakthrough year.
So, yeah, 14 years, that job is open as well.
What about the Bay?
Taylor's side, Tom Fornelli.
Dave Aranda, we had identified.
He was one of those sort of top, where Shane Beamer, you know,
with back-to-back wins against Florida and Tennessee,
he was in the hot seat graphic back in July, and he has very much, like, worked himself off.
Dave Aranda, always part of the hot seat conversation.
Now things finally come to a close after the last couple of weeks.
Went back and listened to Saturday night's show again.
You said very explicitly, I mean, Dave Aranda could be fired tomorrow.
Sure enough, that did end up happening.
So, what is the Baylor job to you, Tom?
I don't know.
It's a weird spot.
I would ask you three guys, like, of the three openings, which one do you think is the best gig?
I would take NC State.
I would take Maryland.
Okay, well, not totally, but I ran, like, a poll on Twitter, like, listing the three,
and I asked which is the best job.
Baylor got 53% of the votes.
I was very surprised by that.
And it's not like I have some massive Big 12 following who's pumping up, like, a Big 12 program.
But, yeah, it's an odd job.
It's a situation where I think they've proven that you can win.
I just don't know where that job sits right now in relation to the rest of the Big 12.
I mean, obviously, they've got a nice new stadium.
They have the buy-in.
But there was also, part of it was, like, a few weeks ago,
one of the reasons Aranda is fired is coming off of that Arizona State win.
Like, they had really kind of, like,
they used it.
They were 4-1 or whatever.
They were close to being 5-0.
And they had their bye week.
And they used that bye week to get, like, fans and students excited.
Like, they did, like, a whole promotional campaign to get them to show up to the stadium for that TCU game.
And which tells you the fans weren't really all that enthusiastic before.
So they had to get them to show up to the game.
And then they come out and lay the egg.
And that's kind of when I knew that he was going to end up being fired.
So I don't know what the buy-in is there from the students, from the fans, from the alumni at this moment.
I don't know.
I think that moving on from Aranda is similar to what you're doing at NC State,
where you're trying to get everybody excited about the program again.
And in this day and age, if you don't have, like, excitement from your donors and from your fans,
it's really hard to compete.
So to me, I think that's exactly what this is.
I don't know if Baylor is a program you look at and think that it's going to win the Big 12.
But I think that, especially now that we're going to 24,
like, there's certainly a path to a playoff appearance in the Big 12 with Baylor.
Yeah.
Like, I would agree.
I think it's a solid job.
I don't think it's, like, a top-half job in the Power Four.
But I don't think it's, like, a bottom-10 or bottom-15 job, right?
Like, within that league, I would rather have Baylor than, like, a Kansas or Kansas State.
I think they have more money than, like, an Arizona.
You know, like, by the way, shout-out to Arizona, man.
They just keep, you know, just, like, outplaying their resources pretty considerably.
You know, so I think Tom's point is well made about the 24.
And I think in a 24, you have to assume the Big 12 is going to be a multi-bid league
much more often than it's not, right?
And there's also kind of the unknown.
Like we talked about with NC State, what's their spending level going to be
with the excitement of a new coach, especially if it's like a Phillip Rivers?
You know, what is Baylor's spending level going to be with a new coach?
I think people were pretty out on Dave Aranda.
I go back to the summer school, obviously, and the episode,
I did, and they were like, yeah, this feels like we're just kind of, you know,
playing out the string.
Not a lot of investment in this roster in the offseason.
So Baylor, like, does have some money, right?
They're already sort of, like, upper middle of the pack
in terms of spending within the Big 12.
If they're able to juice that up a little bit, get a higher quality roster,
you know, and we'll just see.
Like, a lot of this, too, comes down to, like,
which of these athletic departments is going to break with tradition
of paying the coach so much money and dump more money,
you know, into the roster, you know?
And, like, a coach, I think, that wants to win
is going to take a little bit less
and probably take a little bit more incentives
if he gets, like, more guaranteed money, you know, for his roster
because the players win the games.
I'm not saying coaching matters.
It just doesn't matter as much as the players.
So it makes it kind of hard to talk about, like, what job is a good job
because we know what Baylor spent this year, roughly.
We don't know what they'll spend next year, right?
Like, I haven't seen, like, that messaging come out yet, right?
Like, I think they're very low.
20s this year on this roster.
Are they, like, 35 next year?
Are they, like, 30?
If they're sticking to 20s, then, like, this is not a good job.
What do you think, TK?
I was curious to hear Bud's take on how Maryland is the best job
of these available.
Is it just the tie to the Big Ten and the security there financially?
Yeah.
You know, probably job security as well where you're not under as much heat.
They're going to give you a really long leash.
Is that where you're going to Maryland?
That's absolutely where I'm going.
That's where you're going.
Yeah.
Yeah, for sure.
I don't think Maryland's that strong financially right now.
I don't think you can just say Big Ten money
and then have that, like, wash over.
Because it's Big Ten money, but it's also a Big Ten schedule.
Yeah, and it's also, it's not full.
I don't think they're at a full share yet,
and there's also a reason they joined the Big Ten,
and it was because they needed money.
Maryland's not at a full share yet?
Uh-uh.
Hold on, don't quote me on that.
They might be now.
That was a long time ago they joined this league.
That was, like, when Louisville jumped in.
to the ACC.
It was 2014.
Yeah, they might be now,
but it's just. Still, they had some catching up to do.
From what I've read and from people I've talked to,
Maryland's financial stability is not exactly outstanding at the moment.
And do you remember when their athletic director at the ground
or at the ribbon cutting for the new athletic facility?
But they will be next year.
Next year is the first year of the full share.
Oh, good. It's only been 12 years.
The athletic director said at the ribbon cutting
for a new athletics facility, he said,
this is great, we just poured millions of dollars
into this athletics facility in an era
where players would get trashed in a trash can for $250,000.
So they got caught in one of those,
the world is changing around them,
and they were making multi-million dollar decisions in the old era.
So even as the Big Ten money was coming in,
they were dumping it into facilities in the exact time
as everything is being shifting more towards the idea
of investing in your talent.
The Bengals still sign free agents, guys.
The Bengals won yesterday.
Somebody's got to take the checks, right?
Somebody's got to take the checks.
Yeah, I'm just saying, like,
players don't give a damn about the facilities
within reason in an era once they can get paid, right?
Would you say, for Baylor,
would it bother you at all that you are,
what's your ranking in the state as far as competing for players?
I mean, you've got to battle with Texas,
Texas A&M who have deeper pockets,
Texas Tech now has deep pockets.
Yeah, but I don't think you compete against those schools for players.
I think you have to look at it overall against the Big 12.
Like, if I'm Baylor and I'm just being honest,
like, I'm not competing against Texas A&M and Texas Tech for players.
It's TCU, Oklahoma State.
And SMU.
Yeah.
Because when you talked about upper half in the Big 12,
I went back to that big visualization that the Athletic did
where all of the Big 12 was just one big clot, you know?
You can probably go from third to 11th in the Big 12
with one donor who decides to. Absolutely.
Who, like, gets bankrupt, right?
I mean, it's just you can move up and down,
it also, something else that just came to mind was,
can we even rank jobs anymore?
I think that's a really good point.
I think it's easier to rank coaches than it is to rank jobs.
I mean, I think it's, they're both obviously pretty challenging, right?
I think you can probably do, like, tiers,
but if you're telling me, like,
this job is so much better than this job within a tier,
I think it comes down to personal preference and fit.
Yeah.
My thought, when you're talking about Baylor
and you're looking at the roster construction,
is Baylor going to be a team
that is going to try to invest in recruiting out of high school,
or are they going to be a portal team every single year?
That probably is part of your discussion
with your head coaching candidates.
How do you plan to do this?
Is this going to be a, you're coming in there
and you're going to work to build
and then we'll spend our money retaining?
Or are you going to be the kind of coach
that has shown, based on what you've done
over the last couple of seasons,
that you can pull in all these mercenaries
from different parts of the country?
Because let's think about it then.
If it's Baylor,
you're probably getting someone
who couldn't get on the field at Texas, right?
And you're trying to give them an opportunity.
And you're trying to get Texas State's best wide receiver.
You're doing this thing where,
and I think NC State is another similar example to this.
You're trying to pull players
who are a little bit above you in the pecking order,
give them an opportunity to be able to succeed
in a way that they weren't.
And then you're also trying to get the very best players
from the group below you,
whoever is hired at any of these jobs.
You've got to be able to get all these people
on the same page.
Or have a plan to say,
yeah, we might lose in the year one, year two,
but we're going to spend our money
keeping these guys together.
My high school evaluation is at an elite level.
I also think Baylor geographically is a little bit,
like Waco has not moved,
but the population of Texas has,
the area around there is a little bit less remote
than it used to be.
That area of Texas out west is expanding quite a bit.
I visited Baylor in 2019,
like 2007, I think.
And I was like, man,
there's like nothing out here, right?
And like I went to undergrad in Tallahassee,
you know, like not like-
For reference.
Like there's not a lot around Tallahassee.
And law school in Tuscaloosa.
Yeah, right.
And I was like, man,
this feels like really middle of nowhere
for a guy from Florida, right?
But like the state has moved out there more.
Like there's more around there now.
So I think it's a little bit easier
just in terms of getting guys to come.
And look, Texas Tech gets players.
There's not a lot in Lubbock, Texas, right?
There's a Sprouts now.
I know Cody's trying to change it, but.
What about names?
We talked about what kind of jobs these are.
Trailer for Baylor is going to be the big one.
Oh, God, that sounds great.
He's had like a renaissance, man.
You know, like he wasn't all just a Frank Harris merchant
and is winning ballgames
and they've done a good job there.
That's a big jump.
We've seen the moving from Conference USA
to American is pretty good.
Pretty significant.
He's got him like,
I know there was a rough patch there after Frank Harris,
but they've gone back and they're winning again.
The whole Texas high school mafia thing is real too, right?
I mean, you got to be able to like know who to talk to,
who you have to kiss the ring to.
And he was a part of that as a coach.
Now he's got great relationships there.
I think the dude can coach, man.
I think he'd be a great hire.
Are you guys buying into the Lincoln Riley stuff?
No, I don't think Lincoln is leaving USC
willingly to take the ball.
I think if he gets fired by USC,
he would consider the Baylor job.
But I've heard like possibility that Lincoln
was just wants to reset.
It's like, no, you don't need to reset.
You can make them pay you 70 million or whatever
and then reset.
Is there a chance,
like you were talking about finances,
that he would, you know,
if he gets fired or kind of work something
where, hey, let me go
and then the new place doesn't have to pay him as much
because some of that money can be offset.
I don't see,
I don't see Lincoln Riley playing any games
to give anybody any favors.
No, but like USC could be.
Yeah, Danny's saying,
is USC willing to pay that price tag
knowing that like they're getting a rebate?
Oh, yeah.
Like where it's all like, hey, like we'll work this out.
We're going to like, we're just going to do it.
Like we're going to make the move,
but like have something ready to go
for Lincoln, like so that it's offset.
Like kind of like what happened with James Franklin.
I was going to say James Franklin is the one
because that $70 million buyout,
it went down to nine.
Yeah, right.
Yeah.
So like something similar there could happen
where maybe it is more attractive.
I mean, a couple of weeks ago, we're thinking,
are there going to be any good jobs open?
And now there's a couple.
What about you guys know where Lincoln Riley's
coaching next, right?
Texas Tech.
I don't think there's any chance Texas Tech
would go get Lincoln Riley.
Ooh.
Like if you're going to go spend big money,
wouldn't you go get Eric Morris?
Do you know who his teammates with Lincoln Riley?
Yeah.
Cody Campbell.
Right.
And like, look at Lincoln's results at you.
Like Lincoln's results at USC suck, man.
Like that's a soft team.
They look unfocused way too often.
Like I, I don't, man, like,
like I'm just out on Lincoln Riley.
Like, like if I'm a Texas Tech fan
and that's who you go get, I'm like, really?
Like, I mean, yeah, we have a bigger resource edge
at Tech over the Big 12 than Lincoln has.
Yeah.
We have a bigger resource over the Big 10,
but like guys, like what, what about that team
inspires you?
Like this, this guy's going to be able to do it here.
No, but you could tell yourself that after two years
of an offense that couldn't get the job done
scoring points.
And I realize this is hilarious after USC could not
score any points against Wisconsin.
But if you wanted to tell yourself that if Texas Tech
had a better offense, if Texas Tech had better
quarterback play within, we would have done this,
this, this, and this over the last two seasons.
I mean, but you said this.
You said Saturday night, if Texas Tech misses the playoff,
if you were, I don't want to put words.
Well, this was pre-Soresby, right?
Like if they had Soresby and they missed the playoff,
I think like you need to, you need to.
No, last on Saturday night, you said if Texas Tech
misses the playoff, I might get rid of Joey McGuire.
No, I, I, what, this is what I was trying to say
on Saturday night.
Like I said in the preseason, like before all the Soresby stuff,
if this team were to miss the playoff,
then you need to clean house.
I think not having Soresby, I do think gives you an extra year.
What if they finish ninth?
Nine and three, which isn't crazy.
I don't think they're going to move on from Joey McGuire
if they finish nine and three.
Because Joey McGuire, also part of the mafia.
Right.
Yeah.
But I mean, the guy who makes the decisions
didn't seem very happy on Saturday.
And the fact that he's publicly tweeting about it
leads me to believe that Joey McGuire is very much in trouble
if with or without Brendan Soresby.
I think he was kind of embarrassed based on what he said
about Cincinnati and the entire team.
The entire Soresby situation, for them to go on the road
and then lose to that Cincinnati team,
I think that goes a very long way in that man's mind.
I bet you, Dinner, next time,
like whenever we go on the road next,
that, well, it won't be decided by then,
that he gets to do the coordinator thing
instead of firing the head guy.
Oh, that he gets to, he gets one chance.
He gets to change the office coordinator, yeah.
Or it could be a top.
I mean, he does have a pretty good excuse, though,
that Soresby wasn't able to play.
And I think it makes sense.
It makes so much more sense now.
The way we've seen Campbell struggle,
it looks like, oh, they knew they were in deep trouble.
I mean, they were a quarterback away,
and they went and got one of the most highly priced ones,
and then they were really screwed
because they had no other options.
It makes way more sense how they fought this thing,
tooth and nail, realizing we could be in,
like, this is the situation,
and now we're seeing it unfold.
So he does have that excuse, too.
Yep.
What else from sort of the,
the, in general,
a candidate or another job to open uh there is some you know a lot of a lot of smoke and a lot
of buzz and a lot of discontent coming out of the upstate of south carolina in the wake of that loss
on saturday night to virginia tech among them you know just sort of the the voices of authority
on the clemson media beat have started to turn they have started to pull up all the receipts
and they've started to tell the story of dabbo sweeney's stubbornness they have started to
describe in detail and you know intricate sourcing about how even within his own building the
question about going to get a quarterback from the portal was presented to dabbo sweeney and mr
two national championships dropped his rings on the table and said we're not going to do it
and here we sit and the clemson tigers have woeful quarterback play that is keeping a team with nfl
draft picks being able to win one and a half more games already maybe two games if they had been
able to get better quarterbacking
play to this point i mean they wouldn't have beaten lsu with the portal quarterback
but they definitely would have been in better shape than they are currently and especially
with a better outlook moving forward last time on this one but what do you what's your sense on uh
on clemson i mean i don't know if they'd really pull the trigger but like i i think florida state
beats him this weekend like clemson's offense is a disaster man yeah it's and dabbo's like never
been a scheme guy never been a play caller like not you know respected for his x's and o's he's
a motivation guy i don't know that he's actually a good cultural fit in an era in which players get
paid right he's unwilling to manage the roster or allow his people to manage the roster in the
right way and he went and hired a bunch of yes men around him right and so i'm like it if the
check was lower that you'd have to cut to him i i think he'd be gone yesterday like like this has
been really poorly managed for three or four years now um but i don't know if clemson's willing to do
it
apparently have you heard this chip that there's like money to be spent and he just didn't even
spend it who are you gonna spend it on well like for a quarterback for other positions like that
they well no but they're not willing to hit the portal danny which is right that's what i'm that's
the point like that's i think why there's such frustration is and dabbo to the stubbornness was
we don't need anybody we got our guys i want my guys we'll go to war with my guys but we're seeing
enough that's a good comparison in the chat from joey stefan coach k in basketball like eventually
he had to change coach k yeah from the one and done like yeah refusing to take advantage of that
and then he did no no it's not your problem i don't know no no no no no it changed because
mike sheshefsky changed like four different times that's he's he's nothing like that yeah he's he
got in he came in and he was over his head and then he got johnny dawkins and he got that big
recruiting class that saved his job the first time he was on the hot seat then he was able to
ramp things up and that led to your bobby hurley christian latner types then all of a sudden like
needed to reboot again by the end of the 90s you went and go get your elton brand shane battier
you know that kind of class then that started to run its course josh mcroberts you know obviously
sort of near the end of that rebooted again with kairi irving and a whole new era and generation he
he went through multiple changes dabbo's just been little old clemson from the beginning
he just was able to ride it
that all the way to the top and now there's not another life unless we he finds it somehow
with a uh a whole bunch of old former players and former assistants
that like you said seem to be uh seem to be lacking the ability to really push him out of
his comfort zone so how does this end with dabbo getting fired at some point but i mean
with the 57 million dollar buyout okay well then dabbo resigns and they work out like a buyout kind
of situation but i mean it's i'm not trying to pile on but i pronounced the program dead in march
and everything that i said for the reason why it was dead has played out further i mean what do you
think they finish six and six maybe i mean if they do finish six and six do they go to a bowl i doubt
it what about um what about florida state like if like if florida state beats clemson is mike
norvell good i mean look florida state's remaining schedule has broken in a major way for them right
yes i think there's seven and four going into the florida game and like on black friday
and then how bad do they get smashed by uf i don't know right and that probably is the
determining factor oh because i know there are a lot of people that'll be rooting for him to win
that game and you get to eight wins and it's kind of magical number that i do think is what they want
to sell like you have a lot of people that are going to be rooting for him to win that game and
you also can't trust him norvell being to to beat pitt's backup right like you right there's a huge
track record here of him not understanding his locker room his culture being bad right like them
consistently not showing up for games you know they've also been really lucky this year like
he would probably already be gone if smu didn't give them six turnovers
you know like that was 600 yards to 300 um oregon moves on from offensive coordinator
merringer what do you think about oregon offensive coordinator mike norvell
i mean i actually think he's done an okay job this year calling plays i was gonna say you said
can you trust mike norvell i'll tell you what i can trust mike norvell to call his ass off against
clemson yeah i mean it's a big it's big game mike florida state team total over let's go ahead and
throw it on the card for thursday he and dan they do go back and look look we first guessed the
oregon defensive coordinator mike norvell i mean it's a big he and dan they do go back and look look we first guessed the
ding them more like i i thought oregon had so much talent and then like i guess i overestimated dan
landing's ability to evaluate a coordinator right like i thought okay like there's no way this guy
can be that bad even though the track record is that bad you know given that he's been on staff
for a couple years now and i mean it was way worse than i thought it could ever be but they wasted a
season now i don't think people realize how much of an art form play calling is i think there's
two schools where you say it really hurt him where you just elevated from within i think bud you put
out something about this i think about you know the loyalty to assistance and elevating from within
like if you haven't done it before it's not and you and let's just say you're running the same
system we'll just run the same system it is not like a video game you can't just run the run the
same plays you have to know why you're running them why you're attacking certain defenses what
in-game adjustments you need to make to attack the different schemes that you're getting on game day
like it is way more complex than just oh you've got all this talent on this roster you're gonna
run the same system
it is way bigger deal than that and i think it's hurting texan m2 i think colin klein
gone to kansas state has really hurt texan m and their offense too
disagree if you can run a successful offense on madden or college football you could do it in real
life too or the game that two-minute drill game oh yeah i got i got like a great grade on that
they should hire me at oregon is that the latest crave of uh viral uh viral online fun but it's
that was like when you had to put together the all-time team in nba and see how many of 82 you
would win this is sort of a similar next vein there okay all right we are not going to be

let's break them down with pole assassin
over in the cbs sports 138 miami has taken over as the unanimous number one team in the country
not so in the ap top 25 miami holding down 59 of the 70 first place votes ohio state checking in
at number two with 10 and the utah youths with a first place vote unbeaten undefeated after the win
again
against houston they are up a couple spots number six and notre dame gets jumped a little bit during
during their off week some reshuffling that comes from byu's fall after the loss uh yes for those
who are looking at the graphic on screen or have already noticed as we discussed in tomorrow's top
25 notre dame at five byu at eight yes uh old miss drops down to number five texas tech drops down
to number excuse me drops down five spots to number 12 texas tech drops down five spots
to number 13 those of course being the results after texas which moved up eight spots to number
11 right on the edge of the top 25 and cincinnati showed up with the 11 voting points that would be
good for 28th in the country that did log those big wins on saturday any takeaways from what we
see with the latest ap top 25 poll yeah how do we only have one two three four five six seven eight
nine teams in the other receiving votes category i was surprised about that too we talked about that
that i thought that there was there should have been a wider collection of teams that were getting
votes for 23 24 and 25 but like what's driving this this this you know group think here like is
there some kind of source these writers are looking at that like jim patterson tomorrow's top 25 today
but if that was the case like we would have a greater you know like variety of opinion here
it was only eight last week
yeah it should be a lot more i think right i don't know maybe it's fewer
people are watching fewer like g6 games than ever before we're far more concentrated on the power
four games or the big games every week or maybe i don't i don't i have no idea i've got a theory
but like the gap between like 20 and 40 in any kind of power rating is like closer to a field
goal than it is a touchdown i've got a theory bud
and i great push and i i know that um there are a non-zero number of ap top 25 voters that
listen to this show and think about college football and care about it as much and
i don't think they care that much um a lot of teams are off just that that week
eight by week just i mean i think that there were six five or six teams that were in last
week's rankings that were off this week maybe just not as much action that could have spurred it but
yeah i
oklahoma state wisconsin for them to even have the kind of gap at 24 and 25 over iowa new mexico
cincinnati and oregon state was was very very surprising and a little bit alarming when i do
think that there were a lot more potential candidates for those kind of spots right there
any individual ballots that we wanted to take note of well i will first i'm going to start
by reading the list of names of people who voted notre dame ahead of byu
even though byu just beat notre dame two weeks ago what yeah well i mean
what is the list of names of people who voted notre dame ahead of byu
week ago eight days ago which we all knew this was coming but still it's funny uh cokie riley
alex taylor andy kendy bj rains brian howell eric johnson garland gillen hayley sawyer henry
greenstein jerry humphrey john johnson julian minnesotan kate rogerson chiara bruno kurt
kenny kirk bowls matt marshall mike jock nick jacobs pat welter randy johnson ryan zuke trevor
hoss brenna green cameron cox eric hansen who covers notre dame joe aruta kevin carter our
very own lee howard leah a
tim marcopolis madison richex scott hamilton tom murphy matt mcgavick mike griffith craig
stevenson zach klein sean reader david pichal short term memory loss from every single one of
them can't remember a game that happened last week but my favorite ballot of the week you saw
that utah got one first place vote correct yeah i mentioned it yeah stephen means had utah first
ucla second
then ohio state and he had miami fourth on his ballot so those are obviously they are the
undefeated power four teams you so if that's how you're going cool but i'm just trying to figure
out why you would have miami ranked behind ucla and utah striker i sent you that graphic what i
like to do a lot like when it comes to strength of schedule or like resumes i like to look at the
combined records of the conference in conference play of the teams that you beat because that
gives you a better idea of where those teams stand at their level
so it kind of gives you a picture of who those teams are the combined record of the teams miami's
beaten in conference play are far better than ucla and utah and if you want to just go with plain old
strength of schedule as you can see the difference between miami and ucla 60th and 63rd and fpi but
utah is only 89 like houston was the best team that utah has seen by a wide margin all season long
so it's just funny to me that the inverse of that order you're seeing on the graphic there
is what he has is in the order of his ballot just very very confusing to me
i think the whole notre dame ahead of byu is that far is it's the one thing that drives me nuts when
we don't we get cute with the good losses and so we only drop them like one or two spots in the
ranking and i think that's why because a lot of those people probably came back and they had
notre dame so high so close to byu and then they see one win and one lose
and so they switch they just have a problem with that's why i don't like when i don't like when a
voting or ranking mindset is that a loss determines an x spot punishment you know like the idea that's
like oh they lost to an unranked team i have to move them then four or five however many spots
that you think it is because that to me is what happened i mean notre dame didn't play byu lost
to an unranked team in double overtime and the stupidest conclusion that we've
seen maybe all season and that was like a voter's like oh well i must drop them and then that's
sort of what leads to this kind of mindset i would think or i would guess um or because i don't think
do you think any of them are doing like blind resumes and like because i do think if you just
did the resumes notre dame's loss isn't as bad and their win their best win probably wisconsin
looks better than byu's win over arizona but byu's best win is byu's best win is notre dame oh yes
byu's got that one of the best wins in america yeah yeah i don't know what to tell you then
because i have a problem with this one i'm trying to get the minds of their heads and i don't know
what they're doing i know it's a it's a terrifying place any anything else stand out um for the the
we don't need to linger uh far too long especially with a lot more that i know we want to get to
including the fan favorite uh dk film breakdown anything else from uh from pole assassin
no all right uh bud take us
to the latest college football playoff bracket projection all right so random model striker
let's get this thing on screen all right this is hard this year and i kind of love that it is
because there's just so much intrigue um so i do have indiana uh winning out at this point with
ohio state's qb situation so i have indiana uh beating ohio state again in a rematch i have ohio
state taking uh you know uh one more loss there in the regular season and then losing to indiana
so indiana's one ohio state is five i have notre dame uh winning out and beating miami at this
point so they get the two spot i have georgia losing to old miss in oxford and then beating
them in a rematch in atlanta so georgia three and old miss six i have miami obviously running
the table with the exception of that loss in south bend so they get the four right i have byu
losing a one additional game obviously in the regular season uh but beating utah twice actually
byu wins the big 12 and gets the seven seed there as the big 12 champion uh ucla look i like ucla i
think ucla is massively overperforming expectations but the schedule is tricky down the stretch but i
do have them making it in at 10 and 2 and then man i just got to looking at like the resumes as
how the sim played out and i'm having to kind of change my priors a little i did not think lsu
nor alabama were going to be able to get in at nine and three but i really think the committee
is going to have an easier time taking a nine and three over a 10 and two than it would taking like
a 10 and two over an 11 and one i think as the number of losses you know rack up across the
sport comparatively like i think it's hard to take like an 11 and one over a 12 and oh i think
it's a little bit easier to take a 10 and two over 11 and one i think once you get to be like
hey 10 and two or nine and three and you get to look at the strength of schedule
so i have texas lsu and alabama all making it in at nine and three and then i have boise uh narrowly
oregon state to get the g6 spot there so um that's the bracket i
I did not think that there was really any chance you would get three 9-3 teams in.
But now I do.
Strong disagree with the UCLA's remaining schedule being tricky.
Strong disagree.
All right.
But for them, don't you think the finishing – well, here's what I would ask.
Bud, if you haven't gone to 10-2, I think I'd be worried if I was a UCLA fan
if you lost two games in a row because they finish at Michigan and USC.
Right.
Again, I don't think those are easy.
I think they're kind of – I mean, they might be an underdog at Michigan.
You know, like that defense is legit.
USC is kind of a wild card.
That would concern me if they're 10-2 and the recency bias I think could knock them out.
The problem is like – okay, so I'll just tell you how the other teams played out
and you tell me who you're going to take over them, right?
So I have Wake losing obviously at SMU.
So UCLA's wins are way better than Wake's wins.
If you compare 10-2, right?
And that would mean SMU goes to the ACC championship game.
All right.
SMU already lost at Louisville.
I have them losing to Notre Dame and I have them losing at Miami.
Now, those are actually three pretty respectable losses, right?
But at the same time –
What are the wins?
Who are their wins?
Yeah.
Correct.
Utah I have losing at Arizona to BYU and then at BYU again, right?
So obviously I don't think you're going to take a 10-3 Big 12 team over –
10-3 Big 10 team at 10-2.
Northwestern at Indiana, at Oregon, and at Ohio State.
So their schedule down the stretch is hard.
And you're like, those are three pretty respectable losses.
But at the same time, who are their wins?
Like Penn State's not a win that the committee is going to look upon favorably at this point.
Kentucky, I have 9-3.
Bama, Tennessee, Missouri.
So those are two tricky road games left for Kentucky obviously.
And then Texas Tech.
They already lost to Cincinnati.
I have them losing at Oklahoma State and in this projection actually at Baylor.
So Cody Campbell probably would be pretty pissed at that.
Who do you take over a 10-2 UCLA even if they lose the final two?
I don't think there's a team out there that would have a stronger resume at that point.
I think that the pushback was just that they might not even be 10-2, right?
I don't think they'll be 10-2.
So you think they're going to lose three?
No, that they'll be 11-1.
I mean, it's like if you look at the rest of their schedule –
Right.
I know it's college football.
Anything is possible.
I'm just saying.
Nevada at Minnesota.
Illinois with a backup quarterback.
Michigan, who we don't know who their quarterback will be at that point.
Right now it's Tommy Carr.
Half a quarterback.
Half a quarterback.
And then USC to finish it.
And that might just be a dead-ass USC team by the time they get to that game to finish the season.
Hell, Lincoln might have been fired by then.
It could be.
Yeah.
I mean, look, if they go 11-1 –
They're a lock.
Yeah, no doubt.
Yeah, no doubt.
But you're not worried about Minnesota?
Yeah, no, I worry about Minnesota, but –
I worry about all of them for –
I'd worry more if UCLA was one of Minnesota's rivals.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
I'll tell you, Wisconsin's in trouble.
They've got to make up a trophy real quick.
Yeah.
Make up a trophy game.
Like, it's not –
Like, they're not a 17-point favorite over Illinois, right?
Like, you're still running the backup out there.
You're going to get more film on him.
The run game will still be there, we think.
The defense will still be good, obviously.
And having a good run game against Illinois is helpful.
Especially if you stick to it.
Unlike some guys who no longer have jobs.
Yeah.
As we discussed.
All right.
Anything else?
I like that, too, because, Bud, as you were just talking it out,
I thought I never would have known as Keelan Russell
and Alabama's offense was pulling away from Kentucky
how significant that second half would be
for the college football playoff picture.
Like, if you had told me, as that game was going,
if you had told me, as that game was going,
when Kentucky's playing them tight
and then Alabama, you know, hits it late,
would not know that those 30 minutes of football
very much could end up deciding the 10-11 spots
in the final college football playoff bracket.
So, very, very cool to connect those threads
and find the significance along the way.
We are so excited that the Football Writers Association of America
reached out to us before the season
so that every single Monday we can announce
the Pop-Tarts Bowl.
Crazy good team of the week.
This is an award that has been given out for 25 seasons
and the 333rd selection
for the Football Writers Association team of the week
is the UCF Knights.
Yeah, the house was bouncing
as UCF logged that 39-31 double overtime victory
and it wasn't fluky.
I mean, UCF outgained BYU.
We already talked about Keyon Jenkins
with his four total touchdowns,
including the pass that forced the second overtime
and then the game winner in the second overtime.
The defensive stops from a group
that I think we'd always been circling
as a group that was playing really hard through the year,
giving that team a high floor
and then Jenkins and the offense take it to a new ceiling.
Danny, what sort of stands out about this?
Scott Frost and the work that he's done,
second year, second tenure,
it just was a great moment
for that program here on Saturday.
It was awesome.
I thought Keyon was a ton of fun to watch.
Remember, he wasn't even the starter
at the beginning of the season,
but due to injury, gets the opportunity.
He's a wild ride.
It's a ton of fun to see him just be a playmaker at times,
but I still think Scott Frost has some athletes on there.
There's a physicality to them.
I thought also interesting that he said,
I thought I needed 31 points to beat BYU.
He didn't think it would end in that fashion,
but I thought the bounce house was rocking.
I think UCF is like headed in the right direction.
If you're a UCF fan,
you got to feel pretty pleased with that,
getting a massive, massive win.
And it was without some of the conditions that we thought.
I was telling, but I was telling these guys before the show,
like the wind is here today.
Like it's 50 mile an hour gusts, it feels like.
And it was sloppy, but it wasn't that bad.
So they did it with really not any weather related help.
They just found a team and it's been that trend.
We've seen an emotional win.
On the road against the team coming off a buy.
And it was the perfect recipe,
but credit to UCF for taking advantage of it.
This was a situation where Scott Frost said after the game
that they had felt like they had put themselves in position
against good teams, but not been able to finish the job, right?
Against Houston, what was a 10 point loss,
14 point loss to Oklahoma State,
you know, really quality opponents.
UCF felt like they were just knocking on the door
and just didn't have that little bit of extra.
And so all week, Frost said,
the messaging was like, this is the one.
I mean, those are three hard games in a row for UCF to draw.
And it is not lost, lost, lost.
They, after two tough defeats,
they dig in and they get the big win on homecoming.
How disrespectful to schedule BYU for homecoming,
but a great, great moment for all the UCF alums
and our many Knights friends throughout.
UCF, as always, will receive a delivery
of assorted Pop-Tarts to the building.
Enjoy those as well as the cupboards.
We've got some crafted game ball from Big Game USA
to signify their selection as the Pop-Tarts Bowl
Crazy Good Team of the Week.
Coming up on the other side, we go under the hood.
Time for a pun further review with a DK film breakdown,
a look at some of the practical plays
that we saw in week eight and more next.
Back here on the Cover 3 podcast,
the fans have been clamoring for it.
And we are a podcast of the tailgate,
a podcast of the people.
So DK, why don't you take us inside
the latest DK film review?
All right, let's go.
I said, try it, strike her some stuff.
Let's have some fun.
I was like having to dial back
because I found all this stuff.
I'm like, let me just condense it
so we can have some fun on this one.
So I'm going to see if this image looks similar to you guys
as it does to me.
Side by side, could ask you guys a question.
What do you think happens on these two plays?
And of course, we're super excited.
We're dialed in because we know
and we've seen these plays,
two of the biggest plays of the season.
The one on the right is Cam Coleman
versus Ohio State.
And the one on the left is Cam Coleman
versus Ole Miss.
Almost the exact same point on the field.
He's on the SEC logo.
The ball is in the exact same spot almost.
The first one, he almost catches,
but he dives, it comes up and gets picked off.
And then, of course, we saw on Saturday,
it gets dropped.
There are a lot more similarities than this, though,
because I was very curious about
this because the play looked similar.
I'm going to show you what happened.
So let me show you against Ohio State first,
the play for a little film here.
So first and 10, look where the ball is on the field.
It's on your own 37 coming out.
And it's a pretty basic concept.
You've got a clear out on the outside.
You've got the inside post,
which is the one they're trying to hit.
You've got a tight end coming across the middle of the field.
And then you have another back or a tail,
tight end coming across the middle.
All right?
So your job as the quarterback, pretty easy here,
is you're reading that out loud.
You're reading that safety that I'll circle right there.
That's the guy.
You want him to take that tight end on the in route.
You want to see him jump that.
He is hunched.
He is ready to jump it.
Arch knows right there he's got the touchdown.
It's a slightly bit overthrown.
I thought it was a pretty good throw.
Of course, we saw what happened there.
The other thing from the end zone copy,
offensive line does a great job.
They're playing zone.
So it's picked up a nice little pocket movement from Arch.
He just slides up a little bit.
This is the type of Arch.
that we love, right, the one that we see we get these big-time
throws so he steps up it's beautiful thrown ball maybe again just a touch out in front but i mean
that's about as open as it gets for cam coleman the multi-million dollar receiver who not only
drops it but bounces up off him to the other one all right so that was ohio state okay now remember
the route concept here it is on saturday night versus old miss all right so remember when uh
buster faulkner was talking about florida's run game he said we do the same thing we just draw
them up a little bit different we just we just dress them up a little bit looks totally different
from here right the start of the play looks totally different but it's first and 10 again
it is the ball in the 41 they do a little bit of a shift then they run cam coleman or this is the
outside receiver i think it's wingo a little reverse motion get him outside but the concept
is identical same exact play tight end's gonna run a little in route you've got the underneath
route as an option there back in the backfield same exact play now again window dressing
they shift over to it but once you drop back it is the exact same thing motion in and out you're
just trying to try to see what the defense is giving you now they do bring two backers so
they're gonna have a six-man rush this is picked up beautifully by the offensive line now arch does
take a shot but this one look at the tight end he knew it was man coverage he's celebrating he's got
one finger in the air saying that's a touchdown all day until it wasn't that one goes through the
not even close here's a look at the back i just wanted to show you guys the pickup from the
offensive line they held up i mean sometimes you're gonna have to take a hit and arch did
take this one but they bring both backers it's picked up really well they step up arch looks
right at it and throws a perfectly thrown ball reads it great good anticipation and that to me
is a big time throw like when you see man arch manning you know it could be a first round pick
these are the types of throws that you just gotta make so like when you
look at the conversation is it arch is it sark sometimes it's it's it's everybody has
sometimes it's just cam coleman oh right we call him cam coleman williams now
he should that's a good one i haven't heard that one but i thought it was interesting because like
you see teams with tendencies clearly they have that shot play they like in that territory the
field first down let's take a shot both of them though come up on the wrong end of it
though so interesting stuff watching arch and uh that offense get going what did you make from i
mean uh this is just where we're at right now like in the we're gonna have to grade sar arch
we're gonna have to grade sark we're gonna have to grade texas they got the win that is putting
them right back in the center of the conversation to still accomplish all their preseason goals
it was very clear to me early in the game they gave him confidence builders right get the ball
out of his hands quick couple slants couple like short throws the other thing that's starting to
concern me a little bit they're not going to be able to get the ball out of his hands
They're really good on the first 15.
You know, they'll have a scripted set of plays where Arch can study those.
The whole team can study them, right?
They're on the same page.
The further removed they get from the first 15,
it's like the sloppier they get, the offense starts to, you know,
hurt and jerk a little bit and doesn't get consistent.
I still think it's Arch.
Like, he was inconsistent again,
and that's when the offense started to struggle.
He makes some throws, probably two or three of them a game,
where it's, what, why, where is he throwing the ball?
And he had another pick that was the same way in this game.
The first quarter pick wasn't that bad.
It was a pretty good defensive play.
It was a long throw across the field, you know, far hash.
It was a pretty good play to the defender.
It could have been a little bit of a better throw,
but the late one, the second one that he kind of threw up for grabs
was just inexplicable, where you're like, what's he doing?
Yeah, we had those three total touchdowns, three interceptions,
18 for 30.
I think it was just on screen.
Those are what the counting stats say.
Tom, what do the advanced stats say about Arch's performance
and some of the other quarterbacks in Week 8?
They say that Arch stunk.
Ooh!
Right.
I mean, it's kind of the same.
TI-83 says he stunk.
Winning cures everything.
Yeah.
Like, I'm looking at this every week.
Like, a few weeks ago, we found out that Dylan Rayola
had the worst single-game performance from an EPA
per dropback status in, like, three or four years.
So I looked at this week's worst EPA
per dropback performances from quarterbacks,
and Arch had the fourth-worst performance of anybody.
But you'll see, Indiana's Josh Hoover was first.
Number one.
Rutgers' A.J. Sirach, or Sirace, was second,
and Landry Liddy at Southern Miss was third.
But what was interesting to me this year is that
you might not have followed Southern Miss' game,
but you did watch Indiana.
You did watch Texas.
Three of the four worst EPA per dropbacks this week,
as far as performance-wise, won.
It was a week of. Terrible quarterback play all across the country,
where you didn't have to play all that well to win.
And you could see, you keep going down that list.
We've got the top 12 there.
Five of the worst 11 were starting quarterbacks
who won their games.
Like, Hoover won.
Lindy won.
Manning won.
Michael Clayton in Illinois won.
Drake Lindsey in Minnesota won.
None of them played well.
And also, shout-out to Iowa for getting not one,
but two of the worst performances out of their quarterbacks this week,
which is how Drake Lindsey and Minnesota were able to,
to get that dub.
I was also thinking that of those 12 right there,
there might be five that were backups to start the season.
Mm-hmm.
You know?
It's just a real hodgepodge.
Congratulations on your elite company there, Archie.
I just feel like Arch had those two rushing touchdowns.
I feel like the most beneficial plays that Arch had were with his legs.
When he was being asked to drop back.
Now, obviously, if Cam Coleman catches that ball,
the numbers are probably a little bit different.
But just. On the whole, when he was asked to drop back,
he was not doing his team any favors this week.
Do any plays deliver an individual EPA of more than six points?
Like, is a play so awesome that it could give you, like, a 6.5
or, you know, something along those lines?
If you throw a, like, a pick six on, like, first and goal
from the two on first down. Then it's negative 10 or something along those lines?
Yeah.
Interesting.
But not a positive.
Like, you can't do something so awesome
that any one individual play
could be expected to give you more than six points.
You could get a pick six at the two-yard line.
Wait, hold on.
I'm trying to think about that.
Like, I think if you threw, like, a touchdown
on, like, fourth and 10 from your own one
or something like that, actually.
Yeah.
Okay, that's what I was thinking.
A fourth down, 99-yard touchdown
could end up putting out the EPA
that does actually seem to exceed what's possible
within the run of play.
Right, because, like, there are certain. There are certain plays where pre-snap,
the defense is actually positive EPA.
Right, because of the position, down and distance,
things of that nature.
What was the play years ago,
like the Arkansas Ole Miss play,
where it was, like, fourth and 30?
Fourth and 30.
Hunter Henry.
Yeah, that's probably more than six points
if they were doing it this day.
Yeah.
Who gets claimed a pitchy-pitchy woo-woo?
You know?
Where did that start?
Why is that in my football mind?
Oh, Van Pelt.
Is that Van Pelt?
Pitchy-pitchy woo-woo.
Yeah, when there's a bad beat at the end of the game.
And you just need the score to freeze.
And they pitchy-pitchy woo-woo.
And it gets scooped up and scored the other way.
And you lose your total or you lose the bet.
Right, right.
So, shout-out to Scott Van Pelt on that one.
I introduced that phrase
because, obviously, my kids are not great
at a lot of, like, deep passes.
But then I said it and they started repeating it.
And it doesn't sound right
when a young child is out there in public at the park
saying pitchy-pitchy woo-woo.
Sounds like some other. Lots of other stuff.
So, we had to back off of that one
and come up with more names for that.
All right.
And now, it's time for the Hymn of the Week.
That's right.
It's time for He's Him, sponsored by Hymns.
There's a guy that you are right now
and there's the guy that you could be.
Whatever's holding you back,
Hymns has a real plan for it.
Be confident.
Be him.
And for our Hymn of the Week,
we wanted to turn a spotlight to
Northwestern quarterback A.J.
Aiden Childs.
He had another productive day
for this Northwestern offense
led by offensive coordinator Chip Kelly.
He continues to find a real renaissance
in his third stop as a starting quarterback.
He finishes with one, two, three, four,
fifth, five total touchdowns in the game
to go with 19 for 25 passing for 219 yards
and another 83 rushing yards.
Tom, what stood out to you
about Aiden Childs' performance?
That really sets up for a he
to be him for Week 8.
I mean, obviously you mentioned the stats.
He had the great performance overall
with the five total touchdowns.
But more than anything for me this year,
it's just been Childs kind of discovering,
you know, or at least starting to play
to his potential that we saw
coming out of high school.
And he was a highly rated guy
who went to Oregon State
and he played with Jonathan Smith,
made the transfer to Michigan State.
But now being linked up with Chip Kelly,
he has certainly benefited
from having that kind of offensive mind
working with him.
He's got a great run game going
and he's just been able to kind of,
you know, the experience and the scheme
and everything that he's in
is helping him just settle into being himself
and having an excellent performance.
And he's one of the primary reasons
why Northwestern's been one of the biggest surprises
of the season so far.
Interesting question from Michael
that definitely, you know,
him starts with an H, so does Heisman.
No one's making an argument for Aiden Childs
over at Jeremiah Smith,
but is there any way you could find him
winding up as one of the top five,
most outstanding,
one of the top five vote getters
for a most outstanding player in the country?
Is there a path there?
I mean, if he keeps putting up
five touchdowns per game and northwestern wins yeah he could certainly close some ground
yeah right if he just like you know keeps playing as hard as he is right now like all the way
throughout then i mean yeah right like like he's getting no love no love and the odd but listen
he's got they're playing oregon iowa ohio state minnesota illinois like if they win out like and
he goes on the road and plays really well against ohio state yeah yeah he's gonna start getting a
lot more attention yeah look the odds also don't reflect the invite thing they don't pay out for
getting an invite right like it like i think he's got about a zero percent chance to win
correct but like if you had odds on make new york there's a chance he could do it if they went out
and i'm not saying this to it would be an incredible honor but julian saying made new
york too and it felt like nobody made a big deal about it right right depending on how the voting
goes you can definitely his family was happy chip gee
did you see him on media day remember when no one was at his table julian saying almost broke the
ncaa completion percentage and at heisman trophy media day he just was sitting over there in the
corner like it never mind we're not gonna throw it they're currently 14 to 1 to win out
i mean sure that's probably his chances of making new york yeah yeah i was gonna say i was thinking
if they make the big 10 title game because as always i like to remind you heisman ballots are
due the day after the conference championship games if you are a heisman trophy candidate
one of the best things that you could do is give yourself a spotlight when no one else is playing
aiden chiles would certainly have that especially if it were to come against indiana the only team
that they've lost to so that is the only team right they yeah yeah indiana is the only team
they've lost to so far and that was he's him sponsored by hymns be prepared be strong be
confident be him you ready to be him visit hymns.com to get personalized affordable care
that's hyms.com coming up on the other side more from upon further review where we're gonna take
a look at ways that small private schools like northwestern can have a secret to success all
that and more next there's the guy that you are right now and there's the guy you know you could
be and hymns.com

ready to be him visit hymns.com to get personalized affordable care that's hyms.com hymns.com
prescription required restrictions apply not available in all 50 states for
important safety information and restrictions visit hymns.com now avoiding a misstep along the
way and being able to just take care of things with the practical plays that's exactly what we
saw from the kentucky wildcats over the weekend 34 to 17 winners against vanderbilt to move to
seven and one and the top of the sec standings with a five and one conference record now the
practical plays sometimes are just being able to catch up with you and you're not going to be
capitalized on others mistakes because kentucky's plus 13 turnover margin is one of the best in the
entire country and when you lose starting quarterback starting running back cj baxter to an
injury in this game being able to have some of those turnovers avoid this forever being too much
of an upset threat some solid play from kenny minchi a touchdown through the air touchdown on
the ground and giovante barnes comes in and runs the football effectively to be able to seal what
was a 14 point win but the kentucky wildcats are going to be able to take care of themselves and
they're going to be able to take care of themselves and they're going to be able to take care of themselves
this week before a big road test against tennessee um what's what has stood out about the way that
will stein has been able to take this team and have them dialed in on the tiny things to make
sure that they lead to success yeah i think they're just really bought in on the details
right like stein clearly has a plan he has guys who fit that plan they're you know they're physical
enough i think minchi uh really has a great understanding of stein's offense or maybe stein
has made him have a great understanding of his offense is basically every quarterback that he's
had you know dating back to the early 90s and the early 90s and the early 90s and the early 90s and
oregon and utsa days uh have demonstrated right like they they do seem to like scheme open quite
a bit of stuff which is a credit to him and it's a credit to minchi for understanding kind of the
context of the offense like okay what why are we running this play like who are we trying to get
open like being able to digest like the little details right that the defense is going to show
you pre-snap and and they're like decisive there's not a lot of like just ad-libbing out there for
the most part you know and and the defensive line uh is is good right like they they're
uh they've not played a whole lot of really good passing teams so far this year they also won't
play one when they go to knoxville in two weeks so i mean look they they were just kind of just
outside my my playoff thing and like what what a boon that would be uh to that kentucky program
if they could go to the playoff in year one like you think they're going to get some investment
there uh because they focus in on those little details yep 100 now it's time for the practical
plays of the week brought to you by pnc bank where we highlight the most
practical plays that make the biggest difference the best game plans are built on consistency
not shortcuts smart and deliberate financial decisions help build a strong financial
foundation and lead to the most meaningful wins there's no need to chase risky ventures
or fall for quick fixes at pnc bank they help keep your money simple and stable so you can live
with the confidence that your future is on solid ground
tom you had a an interesting note uh in the rundown what was it how can the private schools
be successful in this big old money spending you know big old big old behemoth world when you need
a when you need a billion alumni across the across the country to be able to activate it you know the
the the indiana um blueprint is not able to be matched by everybody in america because not
everybody has all these indiana alumni that live near them and they're not able to be matched by
you and have been hiding until the last couple years until their indiana flags came out during
football season yeah um it's not exactly a secret these days to know that in football at both levels
like teams are hunting big plays big plays tend to be the difference makers for a lot of games
when there's you know so few snaps and such a small sample size the more you can hit them the
better you can you know better odds of winning and i was just looking at some stats this morning
and something stood out to me like i was looking at explosive play differential
and the two teams that have the best in the country which now just in case you're not you
know explosive play differential is your percentage of explosive plays four minus your percentage of
explosive plays allowed the two greatest differentials in the country right now are
wake forest at 8.2 percent and northwestern at eight percent it's not just that they are both
ahead of everybody it's look at the gap between them in third place at louisville so clearly
hey we can't compete financially we really can't compete talent wise
with a lot of the teams we have to face in our league on a week-to-week basis but if we could
figure out ways to scheme big plays on offense and to limit big plays on defense it gives us a real
puncher's chance to win some games and that's exactly what wake forest and northwestern have
been running to perfection all season long and you'll notice too look who's like down there in a
in eighth place boston college i was also i was also looking around there
oklahoma state so overwhelming with how many explosive plays you've created
that it's also allows for explosive plays that you would have seen along the way wisconsin the
opposite so good at limiting explosive plays then they don't need as many explosive plays
lots of different ways to get to those identical 5.1 percentages which rank among the best in the
country yeah and these are just among power four schools which you know who ranks 67th out of 68
power four schools clemson stanford so it shows how important it is when you are the small schools
and you don't have quite the same advantages how important it is to hit the big plays and not
allow them you know what's also crazy is is that the top four have all played each other
played indiana wake played louisville wow also probably indicates good coaching
yeah right scheme big plays yeah or just like this is what we are going to do this is our idea we are
not going to we are going to our whole ethos was it scotty hazelton is the wake dc right yeah so
it's like robbie zell scotty hazelton they've just this is what we're going to do this is going to be
our identity this is what we're going to do this is what we're going to do this is going to be our identity
a very very cool stuff right there dk you got any more film for us yeah one more we'll bang it out
jason beck under fire from michigan i had a caller this morning on the radio said he's got to go
how can you call a bootleg on the one yard line so i'm going to show you this play that they did
try to run third and one it's one of their many opportunities they had down in the red zone and
they are selling hard play action pass big unit in they're going to try to motion away catch some
attention run every single ball and they're going to try to get some attention and they're going to
do everything to the left now one thing i don't love on this they had a tackle eligible it's
number 96 in the game
try to little sell the fake run and then slip him out in the flat they're going to sell run hard
try to come out give tommy carr a little bit of a run pass option the only issue with it is look at
this defense this is an exceptional they not even a sniff to the run like just all over it this is a
credit to brian haynes and the indiana defense this is open if he if that defender gets fooled
at all that is open for an easy touchdown so michigan fans losing their minds how dare you
call that i think this is one you tip your cap to the defense now let me show you a similar play
because i want to show michigan fans we're all upset how about this one now this is second and
one from the goal line couple differences this is a true naked there is no pass route they are
selling the run completely it is on the left hash so they're going to run with a little bit more
room to run but notice the tackle
eligible this time blocks down everybody sells now you tell me number five and that corner who's
head up their job is to watch out for the naked bootleg on the back side and watch the reaction
right there where is the ball he sees hard run sell down blocks everywhere completely fooled
still doesn't know there's a still don't know where the ball is none of the old miss team knows
where the ball is arch has it easy walk in touchdown sometimes
you have to see that little smiley face too that's everybody's happy uh with a walk-in touchdown for
art so i don't hate the play call from michigan i thought that was one of the better defended plays
and shows you some of the discipline and just indiana is so good on just being in the right
spot at the right time both of those quarterbacks a couple trends i noticed there were not a ton of
for tommy car i know it was rough there were not a lot of open guys to go to like i thought he
actually sometimes the tape's not as bad as you think i thought that might have been the case but
there weren't a lot of guys running open and then on the flip side i did have something for
hoover but i didn't want to take forever they took four deep shots all against jair hill in the first
quarter and a half and i don't know if it was one of those they thought jair hill was a mismatch
for charlie becker three or more charlie becker and it looked like hoover was just like it looked
like a game plan like we're gonna attack hill we're gonna attack him and we're gonna win some
um i just thought it was interesting like i like you know urban meyer said find the fish
you find the weakness it looked to me like they loved that matchup and they were going to take
it sometimes it was pressed sometimes it was off but they just force fed that fade route and just
didn't hit it yeah he'll he'll struggle to get sal the week before in the penn state game and
they clearly saw that film and said we're going to take advantage of it and they didn't
danny would uh when you guys called naked was it called naked in the huddle or did
you just like did you just know as the qb like like you know yeah that was i actually thought
the same thing but i did notice the because i was watching the running back because sometimes
to bud's point sometimes late in the game especially if we're on a four minute drill
they might call a run play right and they'll just tell the quarterback just keep it like don't even
you have to tell the running back and i don't know if that was the case or if it was just a
true call in the huddle but it was outstanding execution but that's a huge gamble like that's
a big risk because if they would have stayed home that would have been
blown up with nowhere even to throw the ball like so that was a great play call from texas to just
sell out and then when you sell out and you win the fake you can get a walk-in just that easy
is that something as a qb where you're looking when you get up to the line like you know you
have have the naked option like you you see how the guy's feet are okay like i'm you could if you
don't call it in the huddle your team's not going to tip it right you could i don't know if arch has
that type of freedom that's been a big conversation like if he reads that
i think it was a play call direct that's just my hunch but he could have been reading it you know
he could have they could have been like hey watch number five because his hips were almost turned
inside like at the pre-snap so he might have just taken a peek and on the michigan one like if
michigan is tipping this not all of indiana's defense got the tip because the tackle eligible
is wide ass open right right right yeah it was open it was there clearly the d-line probably
saw something there but not everybody saw
something so like either they either they guessed or if they did get a tip they didn't
communicate it to the whole defense because if it's clearly tipped right like you're it just
looked like they were so well prepared i don't know if it was a tip or something in the stance
but he saw it and didn't never his eyes were on tommy carr the michigan defender was on or excuse
me the indiana defender was on tommy carr the whole time did car have his left foot back what's
that did car have his left foot back like he might have staggered stance because it might have been a
definitely could have yeah i'm going to get out of there fast with that fake for sure yes all these
backup quarterbacks that are forced into action like sorry sorry boss we didn't have enough time
to work on masking his tails right working on the backup quarterback um it's also but um
the eligible tackle being wide open is great counter evidence for the sign stealing allegations
if they were too good yeah it's like you got to lose a little bit to
be able to make sure that like because tommy car had no chance to get that off no chance that was
dead in the water oh man it was so and so funny in the moment you know just like there was so
scoring touchdowns was so difficult and they were so close and even even that one little play was
just yep i did put up a video on x of the who's fault was it on the tight end uh hogan uh hansen
the the caught that was out of bounds like car to me
it was car there was plenty of room to make terrible throw it was he was running to his
right when you're running to right the ball's gonna sail to your right and he just just was
out of bounds i don't think he could i don't think a great catch would have made it he just
had no chance great physics class could have taught you that yeah all right what was the
play clock on the texas touchdown do we know oh because it's a good one it was third and that play
oh you're saying the play clock like running down right because if it was 17 and they got in his
head and they were like hey naked if if they're sugar fast to the line there yeah good point
great very good point all right anything else from uh upon further review any any other thing
from the notepad from week eight no i do want to pass along our condolences to the family of uh

Summary:
FAQs
A beautifully designed Squarespace website transforms a personal hobby into a professional venture by making it visible, credible, and accessible to a wider audience, enabling individuals to sell their services or products online effectively.
The Cover 3 podcast provides in-depth coverage of college football, including rankings, coaching carousel updates, player performances, and analysis from National Signing Day to the National Championship.
Recent coaching job openings include positions at NC State, Maryland, and Baylor, with all three linked to significant program changes and shifting fan expectations.
NC State is considering a coaching change due to a lack of momentum, a disappointing performance in key games, and fan fatigue with years of consistent second-place finishes in the ACC.
Fan excitement and engagement are critical factors in coaching decisions, as programs that fail to generate enthusiasm from fans and donors often struggle to compete financially and competitively.
Baylor is not among the top-tier programs in the Big 12, but it has a solid foundation with a growing fan base and potential to compete in a 24-team playoff era, especially with increased spending on recruiting and roster development.
