The games underscored how physicality and turnovers determine outcomes, with teams like Tennessee and Alabama experiencing dramatic shifts in form. Meanwhile, the text promotes a range of podcasts on iHeartRadio, covering personal growth, dark humor, true crime, and the paranormal, offering diverse content for listeners. Is there an epidemic against literature? More specifically, black literature. I'm

They don't want a whole bunch of little Ella Bakers, Malcolm X's, and Martin Luther King's

we need to know where you came from.
And considering this is Black Reading Month, the only real question is, what are you reading next?

You're telling me out of the entire SEC and Big Ten combined, there's one undefeated team left.
And that one undefeated team is UCLA.
They told me stories about 2007. Actually, they didn't need to. I lived through it,
but I know a lot of you didn't. But you better start believing in 2007 seasons,
because I'm pretty sure you're in one. We're jam-packed. We're high atop a very,
very rattled, unsure-of-itself downtown Nashville, Tennessee, on this Sunday, October 18th,
the year of our Lord, 2026. It was a Saturday for the ages. I'm going to open the show in a very,
very uncharacteristic way. I'm going to talk about the day at large, instead of a specific game.
The AP poll is on fire.
It needs to be set on fire. All that, plus a very, very special and close-to-my-heart announcement
about the Week 8 Don't Tread on Saturday tour. I've got to get into the show. We have no time
to waste. This could go nine hours tonight. We should raise money for a good cause and open a
phone bank and just do a telethon on tonight's show. They're watching us in Morristown, Tennessee,
Corvallis, Oregon, Tampa, Florida, Sugar Land, Texas. What is it, Jesse?
You look like you have your hand on your button. Oh, I thought you were ready to say something to
me.
Oh, you want me to tell them to subscribe to the channel? We're very close. Actually,
we're four subs away from 586,000, so we should get that knocked out of the way in just a matter
of seconds. We are on the road to 600K, though, and I need you to. I don't need you to. I
really, really strongly urge you to subscribe to the channel because we are rolling. We've
had like several thousand just in the last 24 hours. Appreciate you guys for that, but this
is no night to beg. This is a night to. I don't know that I've ever used this word on the show.
Level in what we just saw yesterday. I think we're coming off the wildest Saturday in the
modern college football era. While everyone was busy complaining about college football
playoff expansion, me included, we had a Saturday for the ages just unfold right before us,
and the bad faith actors out there wanted to talk about how much it would or wouldn't
matter in the future. Hey, don't be miserable. Just enjoy it. Just enjoy it for what it is.
As many of you out there are in high school or college or you're fresh out of college and
you don't really remember a whole lot about 2007. A lot of you are 50 years old and you don't
realize that we've got full-grown adults that don't really fully recall what 2007 in the United
States of America was like. Time slips up on you like that. In the world of college football,
people speak about 2007 with the kind of reverence that's hard to understand if you
didn't live through it. But if you lived through yesterday, and I know anyone who's
able to watch this show lived through yesterday, that's a small taste of what 2007 was like.
In fact, Jesse, yesterday was a little crazier than 2007. It's just that if you take what happened
yesterday and spread it over several weeks, that's what 2007 was like. But buddy, this is
a paper popper. Five of the top seven lost yesterday. That's never happened. We've done
the AP poll, excuse me, they have done the AP poll since 1936, and it's never happened.
And what happens on a day like that is it shakes your entire
belief system. I know how you felt last night. Some of you suffered yesterday. Some of your
teams fell. And for you, I apologize. I hate that had to happen to you. For others, like we got
Auburn fans watching tonight. You got a whole new lease on life. Tennessee fans is like, man,
I love this. Give me more of this. UCLA fans have to be in heaven right now. Like they're
on an entirely different plane than everyone else. But for those of you who were just watching
yesterday, days like yesterday happened to you. And they shake
your entire belief system. You don't know what to believe. You don't know what just
happened to you. You find yourself sunk into a couch at like one o'clock in the morning.
Somehow, inexplicably, Nebraska and Oregon is still on. So you're still watching the
game. But you've got like this terrible posture about yourself. You're slouched over, your
mouth's hanging open, you're breathing through your mouth, and you don't realize it unless
someone points it out. But no one's there to point it out because you have asked to
be left alone.
Because so much has happened. And you made so many definitive statements at work or at
the gym or with your buddies throughout the last few weeks that are now crashing and burning
all around you. And I know that sounds terrible, but it's actually beautiful. That's what college
football is about at its core. Now, trying to figure out the sport right now is like
trying to nail Jell-O to the wall. There are no through lines. There is no consistency.
It's just like taking a deck of cards and just scattering it in the air every week.
So, yes, it can be maddening. Hey, imagine having a show where you got to go public with
your predictions every week. It's a nightmare. And then they clip you and they make graphics
and edits. And if I can bear it, so can you, is what I'm trying to say.
So yesterday, I just wanted to walk through this with all of us because this is going
to be historical record, Jesse. One day when we're long gone, the archaeologists will dig
up evidence of October 17th, 2026.
And I hope they stumble upon this video. So yesterday, this thing starts in the noon
window Eastern. And you thought slash I thought for a while when we were up at Indiana, press
showed me the phone. He said, look at that, Texas out to a 17 to three lead. And I'm like,
good for Arch. You know, it's probably not all fixed, but even Arch can carve up that
secondary. Nope. Nope. And then you check again. And hey, man, Ohio State, Indiana,
that's going down in front of us. And then all of a sudden I get text,
saying, ooh, Texas looks horrible. FYI, one of their early touchdowns was a punt return. Arch can't do
anything. And then it starts to happen. Then it unravels. And then
you see it go down. And Florida, it's not only going to be close, they actually pull that thing out
and Texas falls after leading 17 to three. And that's happening right smack dab about the
same time as Indiana having Marsh wide open in the secondary. But he steps
out of bounds. So you got two banger endings right there. One of them's a huge upset. One of them's just
a great game. But you can't tell if the theme has started yet. Because upsets happen all the time.
But an upset in isolation is not a volcanic Saturday. But it's like a little steam comes
out of the top of the volcano. And then the 330 window hits. And buddy, that's when it starts to
turn loose a little bit. Because once again, we have this big favorite in Georgia. Like Auburn,
Georgia was not even an on-the-radar game. We didn't do a breakdown of it last week.
We put in an upset alert, right, Jesse? But that's only because of the schedule dynamics,
we knew. Georgia was coming off the Bama game, playing their seventh straight game. And Auburn
was off a bye. So you've at least got to mention it. But that's about all we did, is mention it.
And then Georgia's out 14 to nothing early. I guarantee you, the portion of America that was
watching that game removed it from their radar screen. Because they were watching Bama, Tennessee.
And Bama, Tennessee ends up being just total domination throughout the entire day. And you're
saying, oh, Tennessee settling for field goals. Are they going to have to pay for that later? No. No.
Bama never got off the bus. Actually, they got stuffed in a closet. But it was bad. And so that's
happening. And you're kind of saying, wow, is this really just going to go wire to wire like this?
Yes. But then it's like, wait a second. I just saw over here in the bottom right side of my second
quad box, is that score right? Has Auburn put up 24 unanswered on Georgia? And then you flip back to
that. And it's like, oh.
Oh, there's the Auburn turnover.
What?
What did Georgia just do at midfield?
Auburn's lined up for a what game-winning field goal boom down goes Bama down goes Georgia and at
that point you can feel it that's a theme that's not just isolated upset that's a theme starting
to emerge but that could just be an SEC thing right but then you get into the prime time window
one thing you learn about college football is if you're if you're if your team is favored and
playing at night what you want to avoid is you want to avoid seeing all this catastrophe and
disaster happen in the first two windows because college football is not scripted contrary to what
certain people will tell you however it does seem to follow themes from time to time and if you've
got a volcanic Saturday underway the last thing you want to be is Notre Dame favored by 10 and a
half on the road in Provo Utah and there was Notre Dame favored by 10 and a half on the road in Provo
Utah
and this was not favorite gets out to a big lead and then underdog reels them back in this was
Brigham Young owning the game most of the way and Notre Dame trying to keep up and while that's
going on like there was an hour and a half last night that was utterly insane because you got
Notre Dame Brigham Young and that's like an upset beat brewing the entire way and then you got
Oklahoma State and Houston playing a borderline five childlike classic and then you got Will Stein
and Kentucky doing what they do now that's just something Kentucky does with regularity on the
road at Oklahoma and all the while in true Auburn Georgia vibes you're figuring at least I can take
FSU Miami for granted nope that one's going to overtime too with an extremely controversial
ending so by the time the dust settles we got a field storming in Knoxville we got a field storming
in Provo we got Miami FSU going to overtime and so we've got five of the top seven going down on one
day and FSU had they beaten Miami it would have gone from already historic to like untouchably
historically legendarily never going to be topped in the rest of history just put it in an urn
somewhere and put it up on your mantle put it above your fireplace and then in one of the most
weird schedule quirks ever Nebraska Oregon kicks off at 11 o'clock eastern time
and maybe even some of you who had planned on being asleep by then
your your sensories are overloaded you can't go to sleep and you just kind of sat there and let one
of the most hideous games with less than 500 combined offensive yards take place in front of
you Compton texted me no less than 70 times during the game so yes ladies and gentlemen if it felt
like you had never seen anything like it it's because you had never seen anything like it so
let's actually dive into these games we were in Bloomington Indiana yesterday the don't tread on
Saturday tour is at an Indiana football game for the first time ever Ohio State 19 Indiana 15 the
game presented by Jimmy John's buddy I was starving last night by the way I could have used a Jimmy
John's barbecue brisket sandwich available on the Jimmy John's app and at jimmyjohns.com I just waited
too late but I mean
seven o'clock in the evening right now for the you're not live crowd it's actually 7 11 p.m
no free shout outs there that's literally what time it is 7 11 it was a perfect day in Bloomington
Jesse what did this game look like on tv because it was it was like upper 40s low 50s but there was
no wind and it was wall-to-wall sunshine it felt great it was like perfect college football conditions
and then we see the first Indiana loss since 2024 it's close throughout I'm giving this game four and
a half years ago and I don't know if you guys remember this but we had some folks on the Ohio
State staff walking off the field claiming that this deserved five chalice and I I got to tell you
I can't push back on it but we've got a we got a five chalice game later in the show and we can't
just toss those things out like candy it's not quite Halloween yet but it was a solid win they
won the battle did Ohio State at what cost Julian Sayen's out for several weeks now and this is not
a situation where Ohio State has this really really navigable soft underbelly of a schedule
they're about to play no they got at USC they do have a bye week but they go to USC they got Oregon
coming in Northwestern's not an easy out at Nebraska won't be an easy out we're what do we
think Jesse like three four five weeks like that's kind of what you're piecing together that's sort of
what it feels like back before the end of the season which of course ends with Michigan but man
these teams just felt evenly matched
yes you've got a winner yes you've got a loser but neither one of them could run it all that
effectively neither quarterback really felt like they ever settled in which was sort of sort of
weird to watch from the field but then again you got two really good defenses but the margins are
just so small in these games this type of game is not going to have some box score where you go yep
there it is right there I guess the closest we get to a padlock stat maybe even a paper popper
Ohio State just took care of business on fourth down it's a limited sample size
they're two of two Indiana was 0 of 2 that was the difference and I mean Julian saying just has the
the benefit of being able to throw a ball up to Jeremiah Smith and Jeremiah Smith does what
inhuman type wide receivers do he just went full alien mode and hauled one in and then Indiana on
their end couldn't keep Martian bounce at the very end that's the difference in the game it's it's not
domination on either side but I I was listening to some people last night I don't even know what show
I was listening to I was just kind of trying to peruse I was trying to feel out what the public
sentiment was on this which I don't normally do and I I heard some guy offer his takeaway on
Indiana and it was like well Indiana man they're not the same as they were last year what kind of
analysis is that exactly who is Indiana from last year look around the country that's not
like some eliminating type statement Indiana's not as good as the version of themselves last year that
was one of the greatest teams we've ever seen yeah I know they're not you know what they are good
enough to do probably still compete for a national title if everything falls into place their margins
are a lot smaller too they don't have Fernando Mendoza they struggled to run the ball yesterday
but they played two teams or two games versus teams that are really good the run hasn't been
their quarterback play erratic there was a little bit of an injury issue with Hoover yesterday but
even after all that the path is clearly there it's clearly there they just got to have a lot
more things go right for them but they were a high level execution team last year too
if they make a field goal yesterday and or that catch happens at the end of the game
people are talking totally different is what I'm saying so it's no different a team
their win-loss record is different they've got less margin for error now I'll tell you on on my
end I don't know how you felt about watching Ohio State Jesse I don't know how anybody
watching the show right now felt about Ohio State I'm not questioning Ryan Day
I'm not questioning Arthur Smith maybe I'm questioning them in the most literal of senses
I want to know how Chris Henry is not on the field more
there's a lot more to this game than physical traits I fully understand that but man for a team
that has Jeremiah Smith on it when you stand on the field and watch Ohio State close up Chris Henry
Jr. physically jumps out at you just as much as Jeremiah Smith does Jeremiah Smith's a world's
player obviously and maybe Henry will be that one day he just hasn't had a chance to prove himself
but man he was a problem in the limited number of snaps he had yesterday you could tell he was a
little bit of an issue for Indiana and I have a sneaking suspicion Indiana may have expected him
to be a lot bigger of an issue he just I think he played 11 snaps or something like that Chris Henry
is he is he looks like the kind of guy that can take over a game there's obviously a reason why
they do things the way they do and I think it's a good thing that he's not on the field
so when I say I'm questioning them I literally mean Ryan man tell me why he doesn't play more
and then just sit there and shut up and listen we got to get him off the record obviously he
won't come on the show and say that but congrats to Ohio State just a hard-fought game man it was
a pleasure to be there that was where we were yesterday where will we be this week well if
you'll check your calendars for just a second it says October 18th but it should not say October
because that's not what month it is it is Cocktober.
And as you well know by now South Carolina has pulled the nose up South Carolina emphatically
defended their honor in Gainesville Florida last weekend and Cocktober's back on some people tried
to cancel Cocktober no not me actually I did I was just reacting what am I supposed to do
but then South Carolina announced to the world no Cocktober's back on so then when Tennessee
beat Bama yesterday the group text it got to it got to churn in a little bit we were going to be in
Austin but Texas has screwed two trips to Austin up for us not that we're bitter about it I just
had some things planned I had some things planned in Austin and and now Arch Manning has cost me
a chance to face Teagan Kavon I'm pissed probably shouldn't be because I would have been humiliated
but I'm not happy about it so oh I am very happy that we're going to Columbia South Carolina
though I didn't think we were going to get an opportunity to Prez has never been a part of
it's never been to Williams Bryce Stadium Savannah State has never been to Williams
Bryce Stadium in an ironic turn of events she has to go to Austin on Friday but then
is going to leave Austin to come to Columbia how about that small world we live in yes
The shirts will be available.
PateStateMaterial.com.
The Don't Tread on Saturday tour is headed to Columbia.
We'll be there Friday for Bussin' and Pate on Campus.
That'll be from 2 to 3 Eastern.
And then we'll be right there on the sidelines Saturday if Shane will have us.
I don't know.
I don't know.
Okay?
I don't take anything for granted.
We said some nasty things about Cocktober.
We thought it was canceled, but it's back on.
I cannot wait to get over there.
I've been to several games there.
It always delivers.
It always delivers, and it will this time, too.

Listen to Cautionary Tales on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
One of the main reasons we're going there for this week.
Tennessee just took Bama apart yesterday.
Third Saturday in October turns into a 26-10 final.
Edge, Tennessee, I'll give this to Chalai.
It was just a game that, I don't know how it hit you, but it hit me in a way that
I kept expecting something to happen, and it just, it never happened.
This is three straight wins for Tennessee and Knoxville.
We were there for the last two.
The field storming, thick cloud of cigar smoke, the whole scene.
It's been perfect weather all three times they've had this happen.
I don't know what Bill Martin does over there.
There he is, there's Bill right there.
Good for Bill.
I mean, Josh Heupel's in the shot too, but mainly this is a Bill Martin thing.
There it is, Jesse.
Is there any better scene in college football than Tennessee taking down Alabama,
and then just like, basically throwing a party on the natural playing surface of Neyland Stadium?
Guys, if you've never experienced that place,
I once called it an avalanche of noise.
Like, if noise could kill people, no one would ever make it out of Neyland Stadium alive.
Especially if you play for Alabama.
Did you see the body language yesterday?
Did, obviously people watched the game.
But anyway, that place looked and sounded like it was completely and utterly like,
out of this world electric yesterday.
It was just thorough domination, man.
It felt like a 42 to 10 game.
Like, Tennessee had to settle for,
several field goals early in this game.
And there's this old saying, which is a lie.
And that is, you can't beat people with field goals.
Yeah, you can.
If you don't let them score, you absolutely can win with field goals.
It's just not ideal.
And so you, you assume, man, we're just a couple of weeks removed from Bama leading the country in scoring.
Oh man, their average 45 points a game.
So you just assume slow start here, but like eventually that thing is coming.
It never happened.
It never happened.
It was, it was the most glaring thing about this was physicality.
So I want to take you back.
The night of the national championship game in Miami.
We're there.
Indiana takes down Miami.
They win it all.
Confetti's raining down.
Everyone saw that part.
What the public didn't see was Derek Owings and his staff.
That was the strength staff that Sig had at Indiana.
They hopped a plane right out of Miami to Knoxville.
Tennessee.
They were there the next morning for like a 9 a.m.
Team meeting, whatever time the team meeting was.
It was before lunch.
I know that.
And that was a huge point of emphasis for Josh Heupel because he looked at his team and just flat out said,
we can't keep going through these league schedules facing Alabama, facing Georgia.
We're going to have to play Texas, Florida.
We got to, we got to play a bunch of teams that are real physical.
We're not good enough in that department.
And there's no reason we can't.
We can't be.
So they invested in just becoming better physically.
Did you watch the game yesterday to feel a little bit different?
Because Tennessee's normal formula for winning these kinds of games is they got to pop you over the top several times.
Buddy, they had one explosive pass play all day.
They just ran all over Alabama.
That's what they did.
Bishop was incredible.
32 carries, 159, two touchdowns.
They moved the line of scrimmage all day on offense.
Defense did the same thing.
They harassed Keelan Russell all day.
They had five sacks.
They had 10 tackles for loss.
They own the game physically.
That's the difference with Tennessee right now.
They've still got a ways to go.
They're still a vulnerable team.
They're going to go play South Carolina this weekend.
They're a one and a half point favorite.
For all I know, they get bitten and lose by three touchdowns this weekend.
What I saw yesterday was a glimpse of things to come because they'll, they'll end up getting better as their quarterbacks gain experience.
They'll gain experience.
But the physicality piece far above and beyond anything else in this game.
That's what stood out.
So you're supposed to regret having to settle for four field goals early.
They had such a physical edge.
It didn't even matter.
The only thing you found yourself saying at the end is, wow, I can't believe it's only a 16 point game.
That's basically what the field goals did to this game.
As for Alabama, what a two week stretch.
It is crazy.
The difference that eight days can make in this league.
But I don't want to start there.
I don't want to start there.
There's their schedule.
You see on the slider.
We knew they had the meat of their schedule was in the middle and they went to Mississippi State.
And then after that, they had Georgia at Tennessee.
And then they're going to play A&M at LSU.
It was that four game stretch everyone was paying attention to.
They are currently 0-2 in the midst of the four game stretch.
I know this was a sad experience for Alabama fans.
And I want to tell you eventually it'll get better, but not over the next two minutes.
Because it's going to get better.
It's going to get better.
The piano has been wheeled in.
Our special guest that visits us every Sunday night is here.

Season low.
Now you may be thinking, well, that's awful news.
negative. Weren't there some highs? Yes, there were. They had season highs and turnovers and
penalty yardage. So it wasn't all lows. Nine drives for Alabama, less than 15 yards. They ran 55 plays
in the game. Tennessee had 44 in the first half. I have the unfortunate duty to read you Alabama's
drive chart. Fumble, three and out, interception, punt, three and out, touchdown, set up in plus
territory already by a defensive turnover, three and out, fumble, field goal, turnover on downs,
three and out, three and out, interception, end of game. Over the span of eight days,
Alabama goes from averaging 45 points. per game to lacking an offensive identity entirely. It brings me no joy. It never does.
The Alabama Crimson Tide back against the wall the rest of the way with two losses
this week's Sarah McLachlan special.
Our buddy Colm Cook, though, Alabama fan, not a great day yesterday, but he did look at the
show description and entered his courtyard information. Hey, he's getting a free card.
We ripped it before the show.
He's getting a free card. So it's a good day for Colm Cook, at least. Congrats, buddy.
Tennessee heads directly into the storm this week. They are headed to South Carolina. So like all
these SEC teams in the SEC, what is it, Jesse, just the circle of death right now? Death and
despair. Everyone keeps winning, then losing. The letdown wheel of death. Tennessee's in it now.
And they go to Columbia, South Carolina. Hey, what did South Carolina do yesterday, Jesse? Oh,
they were off a bye. Okay, cool. So Tennessee's a one and a half point favorite in Columbia. We'll
deal with that.
We'll deal with that later. Bama's a really banged up team. I don't want to gloss over this
injury situation because I think it mattered. Frankly, I think it mattered a lot more yesterday
than I thought it would. Ryan Williams being out was a big deal. They were missing their center.
Rayson Delgatti was out. Terrence Green was out. EJ Crowell left the game. Zabian Brown left the
game. So they're not off this week. They've got A&M. A&M's been a bad team. I'm telling you,
week to week, that stuff doesn't matter. Auburn's been a bad team. Did it matter?
Yesterday. Not really. Bama opened as a two-touchdown favorite. I know that shocked
some people. I don't assume anything about that game this weekend. They're watching us in Aspen,
Colorado. That sounds so peaceful. It's watching a college football show in Aspen, Colorado tonight.
Topeka, Kansas. The Aspen of Kansas. They're tuned in. And Greensboro, North Carolina. Thank
you guys so much. I need to hit refresh over here right quick. And there we go. Appreciate you guys
being tuned in.

Game of the night, game of the day, five-challi classic. Brigham Young 28, Notre Dame 24.
It brings me tons of joy when we have a five-challi classic. It gets no better
than what we saw last night. You guys and girls who got to be at this game,
I know they don't give away physical ticket stubs anymore. It's all digital stuff.
You need to get a commemorative ticket stub made.
This is like, tell kids about it.
50 years from now type stuff. You were there. They can't take it from you. I don't care if you
end up in prison one day. You'll tell the story in prison about how you were at the Notre Dame game
in 2026. You may even refer to it as a five-challi classic. A lot of you, I think everyone watching
the show watched this game last night. I tweeted this out. This felt like a 1990s football game.
There was something about how raw, how gritty the game felt. There's something
about that game being played in Provo too, but also natural grass always helps. I think really
tight sidelines that are a little bit too crowded, maybe like 15 or 20 too many people have been
credentialed for sidelines. That is great. That is like a quintessential old school college football
scene. Every play is like players being willing to go over a cliff effort-wise. Brigham Young's
trying to prove themselves and validate themselves. Notre Dame knows they got to go prove themselves.
Weather's perfect. ESPN did a heck of a job broadcasting it. I think they should have
offered an SD option because that's all that kept it from looking like 1996 last night. Just
unbelievable. I cannot imagine being there. Fundamentally, we got a completely different
game than I expected. Even if you told me Brigham Young was going to win the game,
I would not have envisioned it like that. They're just flat out better than I thought they were.
Brigham Young's just better than I thought they were. They were able to do things offensively
that I didn't think they would. I don't think they would. I don't think
they'd be able to do. They dialed up an excellent offensive game plan. They were 8 of 12 on third
down, but they were perfect on third and short, which I thought was one of the huge differences.
It's how they took control of the game. You could look at final scores and they don't always tell
the whole story. Sometimes 28-24 means Notre Dame got out to a big league and then Brigham
Young kind of came from behind like Auburn did against Georgia. Brigham Young was controlling
most of the game. I mean, it's 21-10, I think, at half or something like that.
Notre Dame has to fight to get back in it. Credit them. They did. More on Notre Dame in a second.
But this Bear Bachmeier stat line, he was 23-36 for 224. It's not that he's never thrown for 224
before. I think a lot of other people just questioned whether they could scale their
offensive production against what we think is one of the best defenses in the country,
and especially without LJ Martin at running back. They're missing the Big 12 Offensive Player of the
Year last year.
And they still did it. And that, dude, this is an all-timer for Bear Bachmeier. Like, you freeze
this. You carve this in stone. You do that through the arrogance Notre Dame. Then you add 45 more on
the ground with two touchdowns. Then you have a touchdown catch. He could have drawn up on a piece
of paper his perfect game yesterday morning. I don't think it would have gone that well.
Just a war, man. Unbelievable game. So the padlock stat, if you want to identify one,
is red.
They got down there four times, and they were 4-4 for 28 points, and Notre Dame was 3-5,
but only for 18. I mean, it was a hard-fought game back and forth. So I cannot give enough
credit to the fan base for creating just an incredible atmosphere. Sometimes people will
go to big games, and anyone who goes to a big game, especially for places that don't get it
regularly, they'll always tell you, oh, this is a crazy environment. But sometimes those of us
watching it on TV will say, oh, this is a crazy environment. And they'll say, oh, this is a crazy
Yeah, I mean, it felt okay. But I don't know. I've seen 10 better this year. I haven't seen one
better than that this year. Like that place and then Neyland Stadium yesterday. Those two places,
and one always gets credit in Neyland, and the other deserves a ton of credit. Those were
above and beyond anything else that I think we've seen this year so far in college football.
So what about the Notre Dame side of this? Look at what they got forced into. I mean, the spot,
I don't think it swallowed them up.
It was tough on them. But they responded. So if it swallowed them up, they would have done what
Bama did and folded. They didn't. They responded. They ended up taking the lead in this game. So
like big credit, there's no huge loser. It's like Ohio State, Indiana. There's no
huge loser. But CJ Carr had a season high in pass attempts. And that dude threw the ball 49 times
yesterday. And that's just something I did not expect. 27 to 49. He had 261. He did not have
his best day accuracy-wise.
I know some Notre Dame folks were a little bit tough on him. I trust CJ Carr, man. Like a lot
of what I watched Notre Dame do last night, ironically in a loss, kind of made me feel
really good about him moving forward. Because I think CJ Carr can be a lot better from a precision
and accuracy standpoint. But just, dude, him taking that offense by the throat, even in a
loss, I felt really good about it. So you want to win the game, they got other shots. They got
Miami coming to town in a few minutes. They got
Miami coming to town in a few weeks. I think they'll be okay. But 30 rushes for 115, most of that
coming early, it kind of plays out on paper like Notre Dame knew, dude, we're going to have tough
sledding. We're going to have to throw the ball to win. And they kind of did, but they didn't
enough. I still think if they get into the spot again down the road, which they will against
Miami, and they will if they make the playoff, I still think I trust them. But he wasn't on,
but he battled. But the game changer is for the Big 12.
It's a game changer for Brigham Young. And I don't know how much Brigham Young fans really care
about how their win impacts the Big 12, but it's big. Like as I sit here right now,
Jesse, do you think that's a two bid league right now? I do. If I had to guess right now,
this chaos is not done. Three bid. Wow. It's aggressive. You don't have to shrug. Don't
apologize. Apologize for losing to Michigan. Don't apologize for thinking the Big 12 is a
three bid league. Wow. What does the live chat think about that? Poll question? I know you just
put another one up there one minute ago. It's not a bad poll question, Jesse. Huh? Oh, I guess over
under two and a half bids for the Big 12 right now. Yeah. So Notre Dame. Okay. The thing about
Notre Dame, I think I've undersold this. I know a lot of America is very mad. We're going to talk
about the AP poll later. A lot of America is very mad because you think,
Notre Dame never challenges themselves, which is a lie. Although this year's schedule is a little
soft, but in general, they do.
challenge themselves more than their reputation suggests they do. It's just a lot of people hate
Notre Dame. However, this year, I think everyone kind of understands the score. They've got two
really, really big games that were circled in the preseason. This was one of them. Miami's the other
one. And you're thinking to yourself, if Notre Dame's going to get benefit of doubt, if they're
going to get ranked really highly, we are going to place like disproportionate emphasis on those
two big games and they better go win them or else we are not respecting and we're not taking them
seriously. Okay. Well, they lost. So don't respect them. All I'm telling you is if they beat Miami,
they're in the playoff, but this is where it's going to really make you angry. I know a lot of
you, including me in the preseason, looked at Notre Dame and said, a 10 and two Notre Dame is
not in the playoff, especially if the two losses are Brigham Young and Miami. You can continue to
believe that. I still think that too, but I am much, much softer on that stance after seeing
how much chaos is going on in the game. I don't think that's going to happen. I think that's going to happen. I don't think
there is elsewhere. You've got to know what the rest of the field would look like. Independent of
what your opinion of Notre Dame would be like. You got to tell me what the rest of the field will
look like. If it's a bunch of other two loss teams. Okay. Notre Dame is going to be out. Is it going
to be that? I don't know yet. I'm just glad I got to watch this game. It was unbelievable. Okay. We
got to talk about some of these upsets. Auburn beat Georgia 27 to 24, just an out of nowhere result. I
most people I'd give this game for Chalai. This was a 14 to nothing Georgia lead. And then Auburn
just storms back. Number one team in the country falls in back-to-back weeks. This snaps a 53 game
Georgia win streak against unranked opponents. The schedule dynamics were, I think, huge here.
We touched on it last week. Maybe we should have emphasized it more, but the Penn State Michigan
game and the Auburn Georgia game, those were two games that featured one team playing their seventh
versus a rested team. It's just that in this game, you still figured even with all that baked in,
man, Auburn's not going to beat Georgia. Auburn never wins in Athens. You're right. They don't.
And now they have Alex Golish undefeated against Kirby. Does Kirby have an Alex Golish problem?
That's what some people are asking. So the single biggest thing for me here was that America
probably just tuned out totally at 14 to nothing. There was so much going on. Like you were not
going to dedicate a lot of your attention.
To a nearly three touchdown favorite already up 14 to nothing at home.
And so you probably had no idea how Auburn got back in the game, but it was 24 unanswered. So like
some of you turn the game back on and it's 24 to 14 and you're saying it's gotta be a typo. There
is no way that just happened. Yes, it did. And I have the reason why. You remember last week,
Georgia was at Bama. They fumbled the ball four times. They recover all four. Turns out that
that goes like a little circus ride. It goes both ways. Georgia was minus three turnovers
and we call that a padlock stat. The second biggest thing in this game though,
because we talk about winners around here first was Auburn found a really effective way to use
Byron Brown. 15 of 26 through the air, one 50, one touchdown, but on the ground, 26 carries one 15,
one touchdown. Jesse, if, if DJ Durkin plays halfway decent defense, I think I can win with
that turn. When the turnover battle, give me, give me some good, like dual threat quarterback
numbers. Uh, Chaz Nimrod just goes full circus mode in the end zone. That's just athlete making
play. You can draw it up all you want to. That was one of the best catches I've seen all year
that Nimrod made. And if you're going to pull this kind of upset off, you're probably going
to need to be plus turnovers. Uh, you're going to need an all in effort, which they got, but also
you're going to have to have a couple of wow plays that just have to happen. You got to have
fleets on the team and they got to go make a play. I know people want to freak out about Georgia.
Some people do. Maybe, I don't know. Maybe no one wants to freak out about Georgia. I'm not,
they're fine. Georgia's fine. However, the days of C plusing your way through one of these games is
over. And, uh, Kirby knew that Kirby had a really, really weird demeanor all week last week. I think
it's cause he knew his team was beat up and tired. Now are those excuses? Yes. Yes, they are. They
could also just beat up and tired. Now, are those excuses? Yes, they are. They could also just
be true too though. So, uh, a lot of Georgia buddies of mine, like I have an ongoing group
text in Georgia games, many of which are happening when I can't watch them live yesterday. I was
driving back from Indiana while this game was going on. I had it on, but I was like, I can't
watch it. Obviously I'm driving. So I'm just listening to it. But I stopped for gas. I looked
at the Georgia group text and Jesse, do you want to know what the number one takeaway was? It was
different. He seems different. Well, I don't know. Maybe he's just disinterested in football. I find
that hard to believe given the audio we got six, seven days ago in Tuscaloosa. However, I think he
knew he had a really, really, um, not, not unfocused team. I just think they were really
drained and they played like it, like go watch them yesterday. They just, they look slow. They
at times look very, very mistake prone. It's just very un-Georgia like. So you got to do two things.
You got to give Auburn a lot of credit for taking advantage of it and maybe even imposing some of
that. And then number two, you got to ask yourself, okay, well, how much do I think external factors
played into yesterday? In my opinion, a healthy amount. So now they go into the bi-week and we'll
get to prove the theory because then they'll come out of the bi-week and they'll play Florida in
Atlanta because that's a thing this year. And I have a sneaking suspicion. They'll be okay.
Like someone in the, someone in the live chat. Oh man, he's selling
it. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't
know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't
think that's the most radical concept in the world. Anyway, you lost the game. So now you have a much
less margin for error. And let's remember now, this is not an easy stretch. They're about to go
through. They got Florida, throw that, uh, throw that schedule back up for a second, Bradley.
They got Florida. They got to go to Ole Miss. They got Missouri and at South Carolina, back to back
to back. Jesse, we have no idea what that game at South Carolina is going to be like. We're going to
late November. We have no idea. It's November, but we don't know what South Carolina is going
to be by then. Is Missouri going to pack it in? Is Ole Miss all of a sudden the best team in the
league? No one knows. That's why we play the games. But this was a huge, huge, huge deal for
Alex Golish. And I'm going to tell you why. Alex Golish is the same coach today that he was when
he woke up yesterday. But there are a lot of people who are unconvinced about him that after this kind
of thing, I'm going to tell you why. I'm going to tell you why. Because a lot of that fan base will view him. That's the beauty of winning a
rivalry game. Now, for Auburn's part in all this, they still got a shot to do some things here.
They're four and two. The two losses are both in conference, but they've still got everything in
front of them. And it starts this Saturday. I guess it continues this Saturday. Lane and Ole
Miss come to town. What are you talking about? What did I say? Oh, I said Lane and Ole Miss? Habits.
Lane and LSU come to town.
11 a.m. kickoff. Okay, LSU on the road. Blake Baker is not an American hero on the road. I'm
told he's just a normal citizen on the road. That's what LSU folks are telling me. So we're
going to see. This could just be a blip on the radar screen and Auburn drops the next two because
it's LSU and Ole Miss. Or maybe they found some things. And maybe they can ugly their way, you
know, just trip their way into a few more wins. Got a story like that every year. It's got to be
someone. Why not Auburn?
All right. I meant to pull that up. Thank you so much. Appreciate you guys watching the show. I
know there are a lot of options out there. I appreciate you being tuned in. Jesse, check the
live sub count for me right quick. That was a legit cough. Did you think that was fake? That
was legit. It's that time of season. Some drainage. Look at that. We went over 586. Appreciate you
guys. I know a lot of you are watching. Mathematically, I guarantee some of you aren't
subbed. We could change that right now.
We'll be right back.

I'll be examining strange stories of the supernatural and asking, what can we learn
from them today? Alright, let's get back to the show. This is going to be negative. This is going to have a
solidly negative tone. So Florida beat Texas yesterday, 27-24. Good game. I give it three
and a half chela. It's a good game. Had Joe Tess and Jesse Palmer in the house. I wonder what it's
like up there in the booth. Jesse Palmer watching a big Florida upset. He's a very, very professional
guy. But I just always wonder, like, if I could just be the fly on the wall. There's got to be
something deep down inside you that feels a little pride watching that. Texas scored early. Opening
script, great. They added a special touchdown, double great. It's 17-3. This game's over. No,
it's not. I saw 17-3, and I thought it was over. As I said, we were in Indiana. We were on the
field. Prez shows me the phone. 17-3, and I said,
oh, good. Because, see, I thought Texas would rip them yesterday. I thought that was a get-right
spot for them. With the secondary, the pass D ranked in the 130s, I thought that was one of
the last shots for Sark and Arch to get right. Even if it's not really gotten right, at least
you kind of paint the picture that it is against Florida's secondary. No. Florida achieved enough
balance.
On offense, and they avoided mistakes, and they just kept making Texas play. I think at one point
there were like six empty possessions in a row or something like that for Texas, but Tramell Jones
gets the start here. Aaron Filo's out, and he goes 22 of 35. They put him in a great position
to novel concept. 155, added 41 on the ground. Florida ran 81 plays in this game. You know how
difficult that is in today's game to run 81 plays.
They were 0 of 7 on third down in the first half, and still ended up running 81 plays
because they were 8 of 12 in the second half. Just incredible stuff. Full team win. They
get to go into a bye week now. Summerall wore the cowboy hat out of the stadium. Just doesn't
care. Just does not care at all. And then they got Georgia. The next game they play
will be against Georgia in Atlanta. And I just want to remind everyone, Florida's a
5-2 team.
Here's what's going to happen. Everyone is going to see bye week in Georgia. Georgia will be
solidly favored in that game. They should. Georgia's a better team. What's going to happen is
you've got two weeks to get ready for that. So early on, your mind will say Georgia will win
that game. And then you'll start saying, okay, but if Florida were to pull that off, let's see
the rest of the way. Oklahoma, and then they go to Kentucky. Now in the preseason, you looked at
those last three games, and you said,
man, if they can get through Oklahoma, they got a little bit of a cakewalk at the end of the year.
No, no, actually, the next place your eyes go is at Kentucky. Jesse, has Oklahoma been reduced to
a sandwich game? I think it kind of has. Anyway, I don't even know what to say about Texas. I really
have no idea what to say about Texas. You were facing a pass defense well into the 100s, and
Texas completed five passes past the line of scrimmage.
First quarter, Jesse? In the first half? No, in the whole game. Completed five passes past the line
of scrimmage. Look at the slider on your screen. If you're listening on podcast, this is Sark's
worst offense. I don't even know how that sentence comes out of one's mouth and is accurate. This is
the worst offense he's had there. You've got so much money invested here. You've got a multi-year
starter in Arch. You went and got both those tailbacks out of the portal. They are 102nd in
the country.
Rushing right now. They're 126 in 20-plus yard plays. They've given up a ton of sacks. They're
in the 100s in sacks allowed, and not all that's on the offensive line, although some of it's on
the offensive line. How do you not make the move at quarterback right now? They interviewed Sark
after the game. They asked him, are adjustments, are changes on the table? He said, everything's
on the table. Here's what I don't get to see. I don't know what KJ Lacey looks like at practice.
I have no idea.
Arch looks like in games. And I always hesitate to say it can't get worse. Of course it can get
worse. It's got to get way better. It's what I'm saying. Way better for Texas. You're not pushing
for a bowl game here. This is a championship or bust type season. This is a roster built to win
a championship. And instead, you've got a bunch of offensive statistics in the 90s or worse. They
are not good. Not good.
Body language, not good.
Production, not good. And yet, they're still a 4-2 team. So technically, they can still
accomplish everything they wanted to accomplish. But also, they've still got Ole Miss and trips
to Missouri and LSU back-to-back. And nothing can be taken for granted at this point. Nothing.
By the way, need I remind everyone, look at Week 2 there. Can you imagine if they didn't
have that big comeback against Ohio State? They were ugly against UTSA.
That was a really clunky game on the road against Tennessee. Nothing's looked good all year.
At no point, what stretch of football do you hang your hat on for Texas this year and say,
we just need to get back to that? There is no that. It hasn't been there all year.
I think that game yesterday is going to change things at Texas. I think the radical example of
that is Penn State last year losing to Oregon. That's a radical example of that. I'm not saying
yesterday has that kind of impact. I'm just saying, I have not been hitting Texas people up.
Yesterday was the kind of outcome that has Texas folks hitting you up voluntarily.
Pretty important ones. People who are responsible for a lot of that roster and the way it's put
together from a financial standpoint. I think that there's a really unique situation at Texas.
We talked about this in the preseason. At the time, I didn't think it was going to be relevant because I thought Texas would be really
good this year, but they're not. What I said is, if it doesn't go the way I expect it to,
this is a really unique situation. Sark and Texas are on top of the world preseason. They're highly
ranked. Championship aspirations, all well and good if it goes that way. If it doesn't,
this is not a classical old school college football situation where you just tee it up
and try again. This is not one of those, well, let's just recruit and develop.
Let's have patience. This is not that. There's some other places like that,
but Texas was the most glaring example of that. We're at that point now. We're at that little
inflection point coming off back-to-back losses to teams that have not been good this year.
I always hesitate to speculate because this is such a hard season to figure out right now. For
all I know, Texas is done losing. I just have a hard time seeing that right now.
I think a lot of people who support that program do as well. Being likable is not enough.
is what I'm saying. I think there are a lot of people around there who really like Steve
Sarkeesian, but who look at the output on the field and say, we're not paying you because
we like you. We're paying you because we think you can win us a championship. And if you
can't, we think we're doing our part. We don't think you're doing your part. That's
the trade-off for being put in that spot. Next up, Miami almost lost to Florida State
last night. Translation, Miami beat Florida State last night. This game kind of came out
of nowhere. Four and a half chalai. Like an awesome game, but I did not expect to be putting
four and a half chalai on this game. I didn't even expect to be breaking the game down on
this Sunday show. So it kind of came out of nowhere and there was a lot of weird officiating
in the end of this thing. I'm going to talk about officiating later in the show. So like
if you're looking for me to rail against officials, I will later in the show because
otherwise every game recap could get bogged down with that. Was this Darian Mintz's worst
game? I think I can make the argument it was, but it's so weird because he still threw for
326 yards. He's just been really good this year. So like his worst game is better than
some of these quarterbacks' best games, but he was pressured on 39.5% of his dropbacks.
He was under duress, a fair amount of duress all night. And so it feels so weird. This is where
I'm at on this game. I feel so weird after the game because on one hand in real time,
I felt like I was watching it and seeing so much QB inconsistency, but yet he goes 23 of 34,
326, three touchdowns, one pick. It's a really good stat line. I felt like the offensive line
looked really rough at times, but they had 583 total yards and 43 points if you count overtime.
So like, I don't know, did I not see what I thought I saw or was Miami just playing in a
defense that even when flawed, they could run the score up? I don't know. Maybe both. I lean
towards the latter, but you never apologize for this stuff. Like we could look at point spreads
and all that, but once a game starts, actually even before a game starts, but especially once
it starts, point spreads don't matter. Man, it's just a game happening. You could tell like at
halftime and then getting into third quarter, buddy, forget about 21 and a half points or
anything like that. Miami's just got to find a way to win. And so I think it's a good stat line.
Miami's just got to find a way to win this. And they did. You never apologized for it. I can
wonder how they match up with other teams down the road, but this was last night. This is not
down the road. Miami's lost these kinds of games in the past. Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, like
they found ways to lose this. So you credit them for winning it. But I don't know how you came away
thinking about Florida State here, but I looked in our inbox and I was kind of surprised. Now it
wasn't Florida State. I was kind of surprised. I was
a Florida State fan saying this, but a lot of people were saying about Florida State, oh, good
for them, man. Like they, they covered, they took it to overtime. They almost won like good for Mike
Norvell. I don't know where that comes from. Cause you're talking about them. Like they're a G6
team. You're talking about them. Like they're this David coming in and really challenging
Goliath. It's Florida State. They're supposed to be that like, that's what it's supposed to look
like. The very fact that anyone is shocked that they almost won a game is evidence. It's not
working. You, I know if you just view this game in a vacuum, yeah, it's admirable. And yeah, look,
even take it out of the vacuum. Yeah. They fought. That's supposed to be the default setting.
It's a rivalry game. Like, of course you fight. Of course you do,
but you're getting patted on the head for keeping it close. Like, isn't that all the evidence in the
world? So I don't know. Maybe I just saw the wrong DMS, but I view this game totally different
than a lot of the people who were in our inbox that I think thought we were going to, you know,
stroke FSU on the cheek a little bit and say, at a boy. No, no, no, I don't, I don't know that
anything really changes there. There are three and 14. It's just another bad year. Uh, they led
Alabama, Josh. Well, they also lost. Well, they, they pushed Miami, but they lost and they also,
lost to SMU and got pushed by New Mexico state in week one. Like, okay. You, if what we want to do
at Florida state is brag about beating Virginia handedly, then brag about beating Virginia
handedly. I know that fan base is not there. So I'm actually not talking to the fan base,
but Mike Norvell's future. I don't think it changed at all. Like I, I think they're extenuating
financial circumstances that are the only reason this is still hanging on by a thread as it is.
For Miami, they got pit coming up and then they go to North Carolina on Halloween and they're
playing bill Belichick on the road right before they play Marcus Freeman in South Bend. I don't
even know. There are whispers of a letdown spot sandwich spot. I'm not whispering that yet.
Maybe this was an attention grabber. I don't know. Uh, some more games to talk about here.
I'm going to hit officiating and AP poll stuff. Like it's a
jam packed show guys. I, you saw yesterday, I was never going to be able to keep this show under an
hour and a half. Will Stein is a terrorist and Kentucky beat Oklahoma. Those are your two heads.
He is Jesse. He can't keep getting away with this stuff. Does he not know his place? Does
Will Stein not know Kentucky's place? They're not supposed to win these games. And yet he just
keeps doing it. There's a bad lock stat here. They had a 230 total yards.
But in classic fashion, OU is right there with the four turnovers. The only time it doesn't
happen is when they face Arch in Texas. Otherwise they are going to hand you that ball. If you'll
just wait long enough and good on Kenny Menchie and Kentucky for continuing on their part to take
care of the ball. That's what it takes. That that's playing the game that's in front of you.
And it was nothing more, nothing less. I watched this game from start to
finish last night. I watched this game from
And it's just all, every time the ball gets turned over, all you can do is like smile and
shake your head. It's every other game except the Texas game. That's basically how the season's
played out. So Kentucky is now Jesse, what number were they in the AP? Do you remember? They're way
up there. They should be way up there. They're a six. Are you saying six or 16, 15, 15? Well,
that's six fingers, but I knew they weren't that high wrong logo and whatnot, but good on them,
who do they have next? Let's see. Vandy's coming in and then they go to Tennessee.
So we've got Florida coming in. Kentucky could go to the playoff. It's just Kentucky could go to
the playoff. And I got a tweet bookmarked right now and saved for a rainy day and the storm storms
are brewing next up Houston and Oklahoma state delivered. There were two games that I thought
would deliver big time this weekend. One of them did. And the other one did not in the most emphatic
this one was the one that did Connor Wegman outplayed drew mess to maker. That's the headline.
I thought if Houston won the game, they were favored. I thought if they won the game,
it would be like 250 rush yards. They had 162 on the ground. Good day, but not what they did
against West Virginia. Good. But man, Connor Wegman, look at that stat line. 24, 33, 343,
five touchdowns. He had a 52 more on the ground. It was just incredible.
There were over a thousand combined yards, I think in this game. So it was everything that
we thought it would be. And because Houston wanted, it was very important for Houston
to win this game because they already had a conference loss. So now, I mean, we got Houston
in the thick of this thing. Oklahoma state is still in the thick of this thing. Texas tech,
Utah, Brigham young, uh, Jesse has just gone on record as saying the big 12 is going to have
three playoff teams. That's a quarter of the playoff, Jesse, a quarter.
Jesse's words, not mine. Oregon beat Nebraska at, at roughly 3 a.m. Eastern time. Oregon got a win
against Nebraska. This game was very nearly zero to zero at the half. And trust me, I had the Frank
Beamer gift ready to go. I had him standing there. I had played, I had replaced the logos.
And then what happened? Someone scored a touch. Nebraska scored a touchdown,
Anthony Calandria. But anyway, I thought it was Nebraska's. I really did.
Will Compton, uh, has, has phone battery on life support. He is blowing my phone up. He's living
and dying with every play. And then Dylan Ryola comes off the bench and he just texted me two
words. He's in, I guess three, if you count the contraction, he's in like Nebraska folks were
frothing at the mouth. They wanted Oregon to get put in such a difficult position.
And trust me, Oregon was in the definition of a difficult position last night,
offensively. They wanted Ryola in and they got him. And Dylan Ryola ends up coming from behind
and beating Nebraska. That is a dagger to the neck just emotionally. Cause you can't do anything
about it. You're a fan. You just have to sit there and let it happen to you. And then you stayed up
late to watch it. So you're just miserable the next morning. God be with these people. Will just
went out to the woods. Have you seen his Twitter today? He's just in the woods somewhere like
several miles outside.
I think he just needs to be alone for a little while. Please leave him alone. I'm mainly talking
to wild animals at this point.
point, because those are the only creatures that will run into him based on the pictures I saw.
This game had under 500 total yards. It was really gross to watch. Is Dante Moore coming back?
Like Oregon, let's get real for a second. They are still technically in
everything. They've looked very, very hideous offensively. Dante Moore, we got to figure out
his status. There's still a season that's very salvageable here. There's an outside chance of
playoff contention. It's still mathematically there, but they got to get him back. But there
is still hope. That's a heartbeat. That duck, that heart's still beating. Missouri's is not.
Ole Miss splattered Missouri yesterday, 31-3. Somehow, Austin Simmons had how many? 339 passing
yards, and Ole Miss held them to three points. Just not at all.
I thought Houston-Oklahoma State and Missouri-Ole Miss, I thought those two games were both four-plus
chalice classics. One of them was, and this was like a no-chalice classic. Ole Miss just totally
missed the memo on what kind of game this was supposed to be. Chambliss is incredible. Four
more total touchdowns. The rushing edge, this is a paper popper, 257-39. Insane, man. I thought
there would be several touchdowns. I thought there would be
several drives, where Missouri had more than 39 rush yards. So, I don't know what in the world
Pete Golding did to that run defense, but at least for one week, it is fixed in a big way.
Baylor had everything lined up against TCU. It was all there. The nose has been pulled up. The season
has been resurrected. DJ Lagway's on fire. We got a sellout crowd at Baylor, and they just completely
collapsed against TCU. So, that's probably going to be it for Dave Aranda. The meal is spoiled now.
It has been left out on the counter overnight. No one wants it. It is done. I don't really have
much else to say about this, other than I am supremely disappointed. I really expected more
from Baylor in this spot. They're coming off a bye, too, I think. Just horrible. But even worse was
UCLA beats Wisconsin 17-7. Big credit for Bob Chesney and UCLA. So, full stop. They're playing
backup quarterback there. They get a big win. They step up defensively. But it was like among
the most disappointing outputs that I saw anywhere yesterday. Wisconsin with a ton to play for,
coming off a bye. UCLA, supposedly, in a big letdown spot after they beat Oregon.
And they just get stuffed, man. They got held to 214 total yards.
I just expected more. Maybe I shouldn't. But UCLA is 6-0 now, and their schedule,
when people start to glance at it, more and more people, I think, by the day,
I think the Google search term of UCLA schedule is really starting to spike.
Guys, it's there. You know what I mean by it. It is there for UCLA. Michigan and Penn State,
great helmet game. Great logo game. Great tradition game yesterday.
It finally happened. Michigan got the win, but it finally happened. Bryce Underwood got benched.
And Tommy Carr came in, outplayed Rocco Beckton in the second half, which is not a difficult
thing at all to do these days. Did all of Michigan's points come off turnovers, Jesse?
All 21 of them? Yeah, not a great recipe there.
How do you go back? How do you go back to Bryce Underwood now? Kyle Whittingham's been just in a
weird spot this whole year. That staff has. They came off a bye. It was far from perfect. It was
far from aesthetically pleasing. But they got the win, and now they've got Kurt Signetti in Indiana
coming in Saturday. And Jesse, you guys want Rocco Beck to bench, right? Like you're done with him?
Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no. Don't shrug. No. Yes. Yeah. Big 12's getting three teams in.
And you want quarterback movement at Penn State.
I can't blame you. I was just trying to get you to take a stand there. I'm with you. It's a tough
time. You know what else was tough? Believing in Arizona State yesterday. Yeah, I did. And I paid
for it dearly. 53 to 25, Texas Tech beat Arizona State. I took a shot on Arizona State plus 15 and
a half, and that money is no longer in my pocket.
It is gone. It is never to be seen again. Texas Tech actually fumbled on the Arizona State two-yard
line to start this game. Terrible, inauspicious start for the Red Raiders. And they still hung
half a hundred because they scored on nine of their next 10 drives. Does this even count? It's
not supposed to be that easy. Arizona State had two interceptions, three more turnovers on downs.
They are allergic to the football. And Texas Tech's still undefeated.
Did you say Texas Tech's quietly undefeated, Jesse? Somehow, I think they're quietly undefeated.
And now they go to Cincinnati this week. And Cincinnati just got beat at the gun by West
Virginia. So that's wounded animal spot. I wouldn't say this is a letdown spot for Texas Tech. But
yeah, a ton happened yesterday. There were so many good games that got glossed over. Just an
unbelievable Saturday. A Saturday for the ages. Which begs the question, were you there? And if
you weren't, why not? And do you want to be there? I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't
want to be this week. So SeatGeek, actually, I used SeatGeek myself this weekend because I needed
another parking pass. And I didn't want to mooch off people. Right now, it could be parking, it
could be tickets, it could be concert tickets, whatever you need. Go to SeatGeek right now. And
right before you pay, enter the promo code PATE10. P-A-T-E-1-0. That gets you 10% off all orders of
$200 or less. And it gets you $20 off all orders above $200.
Right there. You know what you're looking at? That is Williams-Brice Stadium. That's where we'll be
this Saturday. Great seats available. Look at the listed prices. That's what it would cost casuals.
It'll cost you a little bit less if you go there and use promo code PATE10.

into the paranormal.
Okay, we've got to talk about this officiating situation
in college football right now.
It's just been really bad.
People who have watched the show for a long time know
I don't really like. overly harp on this.
I'll call it out every now and then,
but I don't call out the bad calls themselves.
Like the judgment calls.
I think you could nitpick each game to death
if you really wanted to do that.
So I don't even get all that angry about it.
Maybe I feel angry in the moment,
but like Jesse, I don't really show up to the show 24 hours later
and just bang the table for every missed hold
or this and that judgment calls.
I really don't mess around with the whole lot,
even though, yeah, you could say that there are some bad calls.
I happen to think it's a really, really hard job.
I think officials. I think officials have a really hard job.
I think they do their best.
So I'm not going conspiracy theory mode.
I'm not doing any of that.
I just want to lay the runway
so that I can say what I'm about to say.
The product isn't good enough.
Just the overall job,
the overall officiating mechanism in college football
is not good enough right now,
and I'm not even talking about judgment.
I'm talking about procedural, mechanical,
knowing rules of the game,
enforcing them properly.
It continues.
It continues to get no discernible correction
because, again, if I had a head of officiating
in the studio right now,
they wouldn't go on the record.
But if they were forced to go on the record,
they would say, that's not true.
We have meetings every week.
We give out grades every week.
Okay, here's what someone like us sees.
We see the same dudes calling the games every week.
We see the same crews on the games every week.
So spare us
because it doesn't really pass the smell test.
I don't doubt you have meetings.
Like, there are a lot of calls.
There are a lot of companies out there
who have meetings every week
and nothing gets done.
Nothing really changes.
So this wouldn't be the first time
nor the last time that's happened.
But just in the past few weeks,
we had the Texas-Tennessee
onside kick situation
that shouldn't have been.
It didn't end up changing the outcome of the game,
but it potentially could have changed
the outcome of the game.
Boom.
Statement the next week.
Shouldn't have happened.
There you go.
I don't know what we're supposed to do
with the statement, but there you go.
By the way,
some of this stuff technically qualifies
as a judgment call.
Like the Illinois-Michigan State
offsides call on that onside kick.
That's technically a judgment call.
When you freeze frame some of this stuff
and you have 10 guys clearly behind the line
and then you have the kicker
a good half yard ahead of all of them
and there is a dude literally standing right there.
I don't even know if I call that judgment.
I just call that seeing.
We're not seeing,
we're not seeing the game very well.
So boom, another statement comes out.
We don't even need to go back and rehash
the whole Western Michigan-Michigan thing.
At the very, very least,
that was handled terribly.
It was communicated terribly,
but everyone spoke in their piece on that.
UCLA-Oregon, the two-point conversion ball spot.
It's just wrong.
That's not even judgment stuff, man.
That's procedurally wrong
that could be fundamentally impacting
the outcome of a game.
And this isn't Giants-Padres
second of a four-game set in April.
We only play 12 of these.
So if you're changing the outcome of a game,
you're changing the outcome of guys' careers,
coaches' jobs, potentially.
Because no one really remembers the bad calls.
If you're eight and four
as opposed to nine and three
at the end of the year
and you get fired because of it,
you got fired because of it.
Then you go to last week,
you had the Georgia-Alabama
just like blatant missed face mask,
the PI.
I just,
mentioned the Illinois-Michigan State onside kick
because like that one threw me for a loop
a couple of weeks ago
and I haven't even gotten to last night.
Like last night,
this is Sunday, October 18th, by the way,
if you're watching a replay of this
because it'll be a pretty evergreen segment.
Yesterday was really bad.
Saturday, week seven was really bad.
Notre Dame-Brigham Young
was one of the great spectacles
of the college football season.
One of the great spectacles
I've seen in a long time.
The game's not supposed to be over
with a second on the clock.
And it was.
And unlike the situation
with Western Michigan-Michigan,
the Big 12 conference came out
the next day and said,
yeah, we ended the game too early.
There was one second left on the clock.
And you're like,
what?
I'm not even sitting here
as a Notre Dame fan or player or coach,
but imagine being in their shoes.
No one's going to feel sorry for Notre Dame,
obviously, I'm not asking you to,
but like, what do you even do with that?
They send you an email, I guess,
or maybe you just find out on Twitter
when everyone else does.
Like, hey, guys,
we know you went and just farted
your guts out last night in Provo, Utah,
and you lost by, what, three points, Jesse?
It's a three-point game, right?
Or a four-point game.
And you should have had another shot
at the end zone from inside the five-yard line,
but you didn't,
because we didn't look at a clock.
I don't even know what you're supposed to do with that.
If you screw up something that important
that badly in the real world,
no one ever sees you again.
But at the very least,
you have to account for your decision.
We get none of that.
We get none of that.
This whole process is so cloaked in secrecy,
it's insane,
and it's treated like
it's a high-level military-type operation every week.
Like, we are guarding nuclear codes here.
We can't let the public
get access to these officials.
We can't force these people
to give an account.
Now, a 19-year-old quarterback,
if he screws up,
he's going to go meet with the media,
and this coordinator or this head coach,
if they screw up,
they're going to get gripped,
and they're going to get drilled by the media,
and they've got to sit in front of a bunch of reporters
20 minutes later after a cooling-down period,
and they have to give an account for their performance.
Officials are already halfway to the airport,
and most of you don't know their names,
and you certainly will never get an explanation.
The absolute most you'll get is,
oh, look at this.
We got a release on Twitter.
Oh, we got a statement from the league office.
They screwed up.
And then the following,
which is not listed on the statement,
it should read,
we screwed up,
but nothing's going to change.
We're going to change,
and the same people will be on the field next week.
Awesome.
Great.
And since there's no centralized authority here,
no one can really do anything about it.
It's just like every other bit of decision-making
in college athletics.
Who's going to do something about it?
Nobody.
Why?
Because nobody's in charge.
And the worst part is,
like, game to game,
you get no answers.
I would say,
good on some of these conferences,
credit where it's due,
for taking the public
behind the scenes,
curtain of the review process.
But were you watching Miami-Florida State last night?
Florida State-Miami?
Say the road team first, kids.
The last play of the game,
this is not even to mention
the egregious holding call
that was made,
which is just stupid
and shouldn't have happened.
So Florida State should have had a shot
to tie that game up.
But even after that,
the last play of the game,
you're watching it,
and in real time,
it's a bang-bang play,
and we can't really tell
who comes down with the ball.
So they call interception.
And then you go back,
and you watch the game,
and you watch it,
and you probably felt the same way I did.
If you're not a Miami fan,
you probably watched that
and felt the same way
everyone else did.
And that is,
wait a second,
did Deuce catch that ball?
I think he might have caught that ball.
At the very least,
it's not conclusive.
Oh, oh, hold on.
They're going to replay.
Good.
And nowadays,
we get to listen to the replay.
So everyone says,
quiet down, quiet down.
And you turn the volume up,
and you listen to the replay process.
And it was like listening to
it was like listening to someone herd sheep.
It was like listening to one guy
with the staff in his hand
say, guys, come over here.
Need you to go in this pen right here.
And everyone else was like,
it was just a decision had been made.
They said, all right,
there's the interception right there.
And you're like, where's the interception?
If anything, I think I may see a catch here.
But at the very least,
this guy's speaking in definitives.
And you're like, yes, yes.
No, no, no, no.
I don't see it.
I don't see that.
No, what are you talking about?
Surely someone's going to step in here.
And no one did.
So I do love that there's a little more transparency.
But sometimes when I see under the hood,
it's even uglier than if I'm left to just wonder
what's happening.
So you'll get no answers.
And I just always ask coming out of it.
How is nobody embarrassed enough by this
to seek change?
I don't know that.
I don't know what change you could possibly
implement other than I think that,
yeah, maybe this job is really hard,
but I also think there are enough
qualified people out there.
But if there aren't,
you've got to insert mechanisms
better than what we have right now.
Like you've got to rethink the entire thing
from the floor up
because you can't have
this much money invested.
Everyone's talking about money lately
and how much money you could make.
Hey, good on you guys.
Most of you will never see a dime of it,
but good on a handful of people
for getting rich up there.
of this sport, don't you at least think the officials
officiating mechanism, the rules enforcement mechanism of this should stand up a little
better than it does. The attitude reeks of, hey, we're going to make our money no matter what.
Who really cares? If anything, controversy is better. You know what Eric Bischoff would say
about all this, bro? Pal, controversy creates cash. Is that the strategy here? Just have the
officiating suck so bad people get mad about it? I mean, this segment will probably do a lot of
traffic. So I guess maybe they're onto something. I just can't believe it's that bad. Cannot believe
it. All right. The AP poll is out. Okay. The week eight AP poll is upon us. And I woke up this
morning and I actually said several things to myself because yesterday was historic. But one
of the things I said is I know in about four or five hours around lunchtime, the AP poll is going
to drop. And I said, you got to promise yourself one thing. You won't get overly angry about this.
So our boys at Ram, they deliver it. There he goes right there. I'll never get it right. They
deliver it. So right there in the back of that Ram truck, here's the AP poll. And I got angry,
but I've calmed myself enough, I think, to where I can talk about this on air. First off,
Wake Forest is too low. I'm not even going to zero in on them. I'm just saying right off the cuff,
I think Wake Forest is too low. Now, a lot of you had a lot of things to say about this. Miami's
the new number one team in the country. Brigham Young's right there, number two. Northwestern and
Arizona are 24, 25, respectively. It seems like we get a metric ton of Notre Dame reaction every
week. Well, much to the delight of a lot of the country, Notre Dame finally lost a game last
night. Notre Dame is at number four. Brigham Young's two. Notre Dame's number four. And a
lot of people had a lot to say about that. Now, this was bound to happen. Obviously,
when you have a day as cataclysmic for the top 10 as yesterday was, everybody has to fall
so much that someone's not going to fall enough to the public's delight. Well, Derek said Notre
Dame's still getting away with it without a ranked win in two years. That kind of sums up
what a lot of the public felt about this. So, Notre Dame fell two spots for the record.
They would have fallen a lot further if all the other teams around them didn't also lose,
but a lot of people are looking at this. I think, rightfully so. There's at least
merit to this. There's not a through line or definitive anywhere in college football right
now. So, I'll say there are varying degrees of merit behind all these arguments. I think a lot
of folks look at Notre Dame and they think they play a two-game season this year. To me, that's,
you know what, I'm not even going to get mad if you think that way. I think maybe you need to dive
in a little bit further, but for broad strokes purposes, you're kind of right. I think the
Wisconsin wins a little bit better than they got credit for. I think the North Carolina wins a
little bit better than they got credit for. In the future, SMU's a ranked team and no one's even
talking about that game.
But, again, broad strokes, yes, I agree. And if you feel that way, what you're probably saying is,
I didn't even have a problem with Notre Dame being top five last week. However,
there's disproportionate emphasis on Notre Dame's big games. If they played seven of them,
you wouldn't care as much. But they got two of them in the public's mind and they just lost the
first one. And so, there are folks who don't even think Notre Dame should be in the top 10 right
now. And they're there because of their brand. They're there because of their logo. I can't
heartedly disagree with that. I probably wouldn't have them outside the top 10, but I've already
spoken my piece on Notre Dame. I thought they were a really good team coming into the week.
There are certain teams that, even though they haven't played a murderer's row of a schedule,
I kind of have my own proclivity to bake in a little bit of street cred with. So, like, I think
if I filled out a ballot, I certainly wouldn't have them number four, but I think I'd have them
down in that seven, eight range. I think that'd be fair. But if you don't think they belong up
there, you've certainly got an argument for that. Next up, Ole Miss.
Ole Miss should be higher. Like, Ole Miss, according to the tweet here, always getting
disrespected. And I think Ole Miss did get a little overlooked in this week's poll. They're
number seven. And Ole Miss just smoked Missouri, 31-3. Again, it should be noted, Missouri is still
ranked, even after that. So, the AP, according to their own rankings, Ole Miss just smoked a top 20
yesterday. They've already beaten LSU. That's another top 20 team currently. They beat Louisville
when Louisville was, you know, perfect. They were flawless. It was the beginning of the season. Those
are three really good wins. The con is they went and lost to Florida in the biggest letdown spot
of the year. And I don't know if you've noticed, but that's kind of happening a lot all over the
conference and all over the country to an extent right now. I firmly believe if Ole Miss' logo was
different, they'd be higher. So, you've got every reason. I think you're fully aware of that.
I think you're fully justified. I would have them no lower than fourth. Miami, Brigham Young, if you
want to have Ohio State ahead of them, that's fine. But Ole Miss absolutely should be ahead of
Indiana. They ought to be ahead of Georgia. They ought to be ahead of Notre Dame. You'll never
convince me otherwise. I know we can't do this exercise, but I would just love to see Alabama
have Ole Miss' body of work right now. Bama would be a slam dunk top four team because of their
logo. Did you see Pete Nekos' tweet, by the way, about Oregon State? Yeah, there it is right
there. This was Nekos from earlier today. Text I just got from a P4 head coach. Quote,
ridiculous. Oregon State isn't in the top 25. And Pete said he agreed. Opinion maker, Pete Nekos.
Look, I want Oregon State to be ranked. I didn't even get the words out of my mouth before Mitch
just shot that down. Were you ashamed for Arizona State there? Yeah. Oregon State, I want them to be
fair. I think a lot of us have fallen in love with the Oregon State story. And that's fine. I have
too. However, you've got to apply the logic equally, right? I think you do. I'm pretty sure
you're supposed to. So they lost to Texas Tech in Houston. They've now won five in a row. They've
got one of the top offenses in the country. But Jesse, correct me if I'm wrong. Even though I
think they surprised people with how close they play Texas Tech in Houston,
those were both double-digit losses, right? So people are looking at it now not from the
standpoint of a team that was expected to suck. Okay? We've got to recalibrate how we talk about
Oregon State now. If you're going to apply the standard of a top 25 team, you've got to look
and you've got to ask yourself, okay, well, if Arizona had two double-digit losses to those
teams in conference and otherwise had run it up on teams but run it up on
seemingly inferior teams, would Arizona be in the top 25? They probably wouldn't be. They'd be close.
But look, I personally would love Oregon State to be in the top 25. And it is one of the stories
of the year. But if you're going to remove all the emotion from it, you can't let that cloud your
judgment here. You've got to apply the criteria equally. Miami number one in the country. Brigham
Young number two. Jordan hit us up and said, so BYU beats number two at home while Miami has a
ranked team and is rewarded with the number one spot. I can't push back on this. I think I'd put
Brigham Young ahead of him. Have some fun with it. Brigham Young earned it. Put him number one. Is that
a reflection of how volatile the top 25 is this year? Of course it is. But like I said earlier in
the show, I've said like five times since yesterday, there's no consistent theme right now. There's no
what you would call a through line. Like in years past in college football, there were just a few
teams that you could just universally depend on. We don't have that. It's like nailing Jell-O to the
wall every week. It's like you shake the little sand inside the Etch-A-Sketch and it's clean slate
every week. We totally have to reinvent the landscape every week. So in that environment,
yeah, Brigham Young should be number one. Why? Because their resume is better than Miami as of
yesterday. That's what happens when you beat really good top five teams. Here's how good Brigham Young's win was
yesterday. They beat a team and that team's still top four. That's how good that team allegedly is.
Jesse, what's Miami's best win right now? I picked them to win the national title. I don't doubt
Miami, but if we're looking at resume versus resume right now, and I got one of them who just
beat Notre Dame, and I got another whose best win is Wake Forest at number 17, to me that's a
no-brainer. Knowing Miami and Notre Dame are going to play down the road. So if you're projecting
with your vote, which you're not supposed to, then just stop projecting and understand.
You're sitting there thinking to yourself, man, I credited Brigham Young for beating Notre Dame,
but I think Miami's going to beat Notre Dame. It doesn't matter what you think's going to happen.
Let the stuff play out. Because unless one of you out there were perfect picking these games
yesterday, which I doubt anyone was, it doesn't matter what you think is going to happen. That's
not what you should be doing with your vote. You should be reacting, not predicting with your vote.
Jeremy wants to know why Texas is ranked over Florida. He said Texas being ranked after back-to-back
losses by unranked opponents, yet still being in front of the team that just beat them in Austin.
The AP is complete and total joke. He said JP greater than AP. I appreciate that, but those
two polls are not trying to do the same thing. What you meant to say is the commissioner's poll
is better than the AP poll. Good point, Jeremy. I agree. So Texas and Florida, what are the cases
here? One of them's 19, one of them's 20.
They played yesterday. The team that's 20 beat number 19. Well, each of them have two losses.
still think the voters can't shake how ugly those Florida losses were to Missouri and South Carolina.
Those were blowout losses. Yes, you have the head-to-head result yesterday. And I think if
this was earlier in the year, the head-to-head would be paramount. But once you get over halfway
through the season, yeah, the head-to-head result matters, certainly. But you can't do your rankings
like that anymore because you'll just work yourself into a blender. If you honor every
head-to-head result, you will completely cook yourself trying to rank this stuff. Ohio State
win, that's the edge for Texas. Ohio State's number three in the country right now. Texas has a win
over them. I don't really care how you try and explain it away. That's a win over a top three
team. Has Texas looked very, very ineffective since then? Yeah. Are there losses to Oklahoma,
unranked Oklahoma, and of course, Florida? Yeah. I just think the ugliness of the Florida losses
and how
good that loss, or that win, rather, for Texas is in week one, I think that's what's carrying the
day for them. Good luck. If you work at FanDuel right now, good luck setting these numbers. Jesse,
did you see Texas as a three-and-a-half point favorite against Ole Miss?
That's publicly available right now at FanDuel, the exclusive odds maker of Pate State. So I want
to remind you guys, I do this like once a month, I want to remind you, a little over halfway through
the season right now.
I know we have a lot of fun with how we talk about betting on this show, how we talk about
lines on this show, point spreads on this show. You've really got to make sure that you're
responsible about this. Every single year, you'll hear stories about people. You'll know friends of
yours, maybe you yourself, have gotten yourself into a situation where you've gotten yourself out
and your head's beneath water and you're betting on games you don't need to be betting on. You're
placing bets you don't need to be placing. You are chasing action that you really don't need to be
chasing. That's a problem. That's a problem. That is not how you should be betting this stuff. And if
that is you, stop. And there are a lot of tools. You can talk to buddies about it, but also at
FanDuel, that entire RG section, that responsible gaming section, I strongly advise every one of you
to use it. I use it. I use the budget setter. There are a lot of RG tools there. FanDuel.com
slash play with a plan. At the very least, go peruse those tools because smart money management
is the only way you're ever winning betting this stuff anyway. You've got to be very, very
disciplined and sound about it. That's kind of why I always have a straight face talking about this
stuff. I don't do this for fun. Like if I'm ever going to place a dime on a game, I'm not doing it
for fun. It's not, hey, let's just see how this works out. And you got to be disciplined or else
you're probably not going to be profitable long-term. But if you've gotten yourself into a
break, and if you know anyone else that's in that situation, denial can sometimes be a big part of
this. Okay. So tell them, go check these things out on their own time. But every single one of
you ought to be using those tools. I don't care if you've had a great season so far. Okay. Let's
go into operation. Keep the money I've won and use those RG tools. This isn't just for people
who have had a losing year. This is for everyone who's doing this. Must be 21 plus and present in

hand. This last piece of paper right now, ramen noodle express had its worst day of the season
yesterday, but we're still up on the year and we have got to have a better week in week eight,
Jesse. And where do we go? And who do we turn to when we need,
when we got to have one, the UMass football program. That's where we turn. UMass is plus
15 and a half. That's where the number opened. I think like everyone we bet plus 15 and a half
yesterday came through except for, except for Arizona state, Arizona state had a tough time
yesterday, but that's on us. That's, that's our fault and Joey McGuire's fault. So we're staying
far away from that. We are going with UMass plus 15 and a half. That is our first, but certainly
not our last best bet of the week. I appreciate you guys.
Watching so much. What a day yesterday. Look, if you love college football, this is all we do here
all year. So make sure you're subscribed to the channel and on your way out, make sure you like
the video. It does nothing for you. It just helps us out. And I appreciate you guys doing that. We're
getting close to 600 K and some kind of celebration will ensue when we get there. All right, man,
let's go get ourselves some dinner for director Bradley producer, Jesse. I'm Josh Pate. Take care.
Have a great start to your week and God bless.
