WEEK 7 INSTANT REACTION: Georgia & Notre Dame FALL | Miami SURVIVES | Ohio State Tops Indiana | MORE!
2h 1m 16s
The day’s college football action delivered a chaotic yet thrilling mix of upsets, dramatic finishes, and pivotal matchups that reshaped the landscape of the top tier. BYU stunned Notre Dame with a dominant first-half offensive surge and solid defensive play, while Auburn’s victory over Georgia marked a breakthrough moment for the program after years of struggles in the rivalry. Meanwhile, Ohio State’s narrow win over Indiana was overshadowed by the injury to starting quarterback Julian Sayyid, raising concerns about the team’s depth and future performance. Texas suffered significant setbacks to unranked opponents, with poor offensive execution and costly turnovers exposing flaws in their roster and coaching strategy. Miami’s loss to Florida State, though a tough game, highlighted inconsistencies in their execution and decision-making. The day’s results dramatically disrupted the AP Top 25, with multiple top teams losing, reflecting the unpredictability of the season. Despite the chaos, the passion and excitement of fans remained strong, proving that college football remains a vibrant and deeply engaging sport. The chaos underscored the importance of resilience, depth, and coaching in high-stakes games, especially as conference realignment and playoff expansion remain topics of debate. Ultimately, the day reaffirmed that the heart of college football lies not in rankings or playoffs, but in the energy of rivalry, the drama of close games, and the enduring love of the game itself.

Because no matter what you heard, no matter what you read, no matter who's been complaining the sport ain't dead, the sport ain't dying and on a day like today, what a better time to celebrate with an ice cold Madelo. Because yes, this legendary week seven instant reaction show is brought to you by Madelo, the official beer sponsor of the Cover 3 podcast and boys, what a big one. We knew that we were going to have some shakeups because when you've got just a plethora of four games between teams inside the top six teams, six games between ranked teams. We knew there was going to be some collision courses, but then we had the big upsets. Then we had the top teams losing. We had a team that was the top team lose for the second time in a row and I'm just sorry, but you need an ice cold Madelo just to get on a level set all this. We will buy the end of this, by the way, I will give you my best efforts to guess at what AP voters will do with the historic and I mean it historic carnage at the top of the AP top 25 poll. We've been doing this thing since 1936. I tell you this, one of the reasons I love the AP poll is it connects us to college football's history and today was a one of a kind type day for that. But because this is the Cover 3 instant reaction show, we're going to go game by game. We're going to take this one beast at a time. Before we do Tom, how we feel like Tom, but I would love to hear from you all. I feel like I've been buried in trying to summarize the day here as things have been winding down. Tom, where are you at 1139 PM Eastern time here, Nebraska Oregon, deadlocked at zero late first quarter, you know, you got Hawaii out to an early lead against New Mexico, time stamp it all because as someone suggested, could be a, you know, could be a long instant reaction show with all you have to do. So how are we feeling? I, I'm on cloud nine, man, I don't, I don't want to, yeah, I don't want it to rail the show or anything. But like just with the way the last few days have gone, like particularly online with like the playoff thing. And just a whole lot of doomerism and just like, you know, I don't know, and just I'm going to say negativity for negativity, say just some people who are kind of really leaning into it for the engagement, just going with though, everybody seems to be upset about this it's a quick way to just I'll say it to it. I'll get some likes. But like I'm watching today and you hear it and you understand, like I'm not exactly four a 2014 playoff, but I'm also right past the point where it's like the 12 team did everything you think the 2014 is going to do conference realignment did everything you think the 24 team is going to do the sport has been fine ever since and I was somebody who did not want to go to 12 and it's like I realized, oh, no, I was wrong. I was just kind of sky falling, everything's fine. And like you watch today, like the BYU Notre Dame Games incredible, Florida State Miami is incredible North Carolina running after the bell after beating Duke, you see like the rivalry games, Auburn finally going into Sanford Stadium and getting a win, Tennessee beating Alabama and everybody. I know. See how he's riding cigar. Yeah. And you're telling me that like, oh, the regular season doesn't matter anymore. It really seemed to matter to a lot of people out there today. And I don't think it matters how many teams are in the playoff. This is college football. People love watching their teams play. They love watching them beat their rivals. The playoff didn't matter to anybody as they were watching their teams win today. All they cared about was that their team won. You know, Tom, if the networks and us had to make our living based on Twitter, we'd be homeless, right? Like you go outside. I don't know. But not me. I stay out of them streets. Like seriously, like most people don't, most people don't have Twitter, right? Like how many of your friends are that online? They're enjoying watching awesome college ball games. We had so many great games today. I struggled to take notes, like you can try to jot something down. You look up, like I'm running two quad boxes, like literally all day. Like the new window, you didn't, you didn't need two quads, like three 30 and especially the night. Like four to state was a game. Hell the raise were on, right? Like we had like, I'm like, do I need to bring like a third TV out of the patio? You're like, and Liam's like, Dad, how are we going to watch all these? Like, man, this is going to be tough. Get the iPad. You know, like it's, what a day of football, man. Like this is an awesome sport. It's going to keep you in awesome sport. I can't wait to bring it out with you, boys. Let's, let's start right now. Like we are moments after the conclusion of the action in Provo, Utah, where Notre Dame had a chance pushing at the end. The whole fourth quarter was just really, really thrilling between these two sides. We have yet another game, I believe Fowler mentioned it on the broadcast that comes down to, is that a pass interference? This, no? There was another aspect to it, too. I don't know if you've seen the other. Is it the Alabama, Georgia? No. There was still second on the clock. No way. Which brings us all the way back to. Ball hit the ground. Ball hit the ground. You can see very clearly right behind it, the game clock on the wall is the ball hits the ground. We're looking on the clock. What about the TV clock? I don't know about the. I don't know about the quantum clock, but the stadium clock said, "What second?" The monster energy big 12 clock has decided that the monster energy officials declared that the monster energy big 12 time had expired. That would be my guess, right? Two, that. I got it, you know, Notre Dame, there's a lot of reasons for them not to be in a conference and they really don't want to be in a conference. Just like that, you kind of wish you weren't in a conference and you had some officials don't you? Okay. Well, let's pull the game apart. All right. Into both halves, really. But I think that's where I call on the fumble. The right call on the fumble in the first half. Yes. Yeah, always the right call. That was the right call. What about the past interference? Let's go thumbs up, thumbs down. Oh, we P.I. The hell out of them. Yeah. Yeah. I am not a fan of past interference even existing. That was past interference, but clearly, I mean, I, I think BYU won this game in the first half. Like Roderick, their OC called the game at his life, like BYU's game Notre Dame to death. Like, like, how many different guys do a past in the first half, either down the field or back to the QB? Like, I mean, dude, that was just, was BYU playing possum all your own offense? No, you just save it for this game. Like, they, you recognize the moment. Yeah. Like, that was incredible. It really makes me wonder, like, if BYU was just holding a ton of stuff back all year, which clearly, maybe they'd work, 'cause they, they broke out so much stuff. Falkmire was on time with the ball. I mean, a lot of those were skiing, but he was still hitting them on time to, to allow for the yak, like that, they scored 21 points in the first half and had, like, what, they have 250 yards to, to, they had to be over 21, let me, let me grab the first half, splits here. Yeah, they, they threw it in the first half, like, they, they, they won this game in the first half, because they, they just passed Notre Dame defensively and just came out and just, I, I thought the game he called was incredible. Like, like, Notre Dame's really good on defense and he just had them totally off balance for 30 minutes. That, that was, hats off to that guy. X, they didn't do anything in the second half until that final touchdown driver, they went, you know, 55 yards in 10 plays, but before that, in the second half, they punt, turn over on down to punt interception. And, like, I thought, 'cause, like, when, when Clonney called that fake punt, which was just, you know, there, that wasn't even like a, like, a kind of a call record, like, well, I can sort of get it. That was just a terrible decision to do it in that spot and it didn't work and I was like, well, they've lost. Like, that was to me the moment that cost them the game. So then Notre Dame goes, and they hold them to a field goal afterwards, but then Notre Dame on their next possession goes and gets to touchdown and takes the lead. And I'm like, man, Clonney is going to be up at night thinking about that decision for, like, to rest his life. And then, nope, his offense came through after it hadn't done it in the second half. Got him that touchdown. That was clutch. Yeah. Just a great win for BYU despite some of their mistakes. Where does this, what does this tell you about BYU's defense, a group that lost Jay Hill to Michigan? Michigan big winners, we'll get to them in a little bit, but I thought that against a very, very good quarterback, they did a good job of money in the picture and making life a little bit difficult for Dr. C.J. Car. They played a lot of man. Yeah. And like, they, they got away with a lot like they, they held their own. I thought, I mean, Notre Dame, I thought we moved the ball fairly well, but like, they didn't score at the five, right? Like, and they, I think, you know, playing with the lead probably helped them a pretty good bit. You know, like once, once Notre Dame started to hit their stride, they, they moved it pretty well on them. I thought early on Notre Dame was actually getting, getting movement with the run game. And then BYU was like, shoot, like, we, we got to roll the dice here. We had to play more man, we had to bring, bring more pressures and sams and stuff. And they, they didn't get home with a lot of them, but they did affect him a pretty good guy.
played pretty well overall, with the exception of the one really bad miss in the first quarter. BYU busts, he's got a guy running wide open on the post. Yeah, like I, I figured I knew BYU's defense was good. I didn't, I thought I wasn't surprised by anything that they did to me. The bigger surprise was the offense because I really did not think that they were going to, I mean, that's why I took the team total under. I figured if they were going to win this game, it was going to have to be like a 17 to seven kind of game where the defense completely took it over. Not think that they had that in them on offense based on what we saw last year, you know, against Texas Tech. And just based on what you saw from them this year, I was like, well, when they face like this Notre Dame defense, they're probably going to have a lot more problems. And they didn't have L.J. Martin and you're like, man, it's just going to be so difficult for them to do this. But no, they had a great game on offense. The reverse stuff, the end of round stuff, they had going out like all the misdirection in the first half, like the throwback to bear. That was just great coaching, man, like they skiing the hell out of me. You got to get credit. There is something about that game for BYU knowing that it doesn't have, we're not going to go all playoff talk, you know, but they've got a little bit of a different world, a different set of circumstances that they are facing in terms of what this game means for them and their postseason future. They won 11 games one year ago and did not find themselves inside the college football playoff cut line. This game is worth a game and a half in those kinds of conversations. I understand why it was a kitchen sink game, right? Yeah, you finally be a good team. Now you've got the wiggle room where big 12 titles, not your only path. Right, exactly. And with what we saw from Texas Tech with what we you tall, what's it, where are we at? 7-0, 10-0. They're up 10 to nothing, but they just fumbled inside the Colorado. That's going to be an incomplete pass, not a fault. No, interception, sorry. Colorado's great uniforms are horrendous. You guys have beautiful like like the all blacks with the gold. Yeah, these grades are art. This is a travesty. These look terrible. There are no good gray uniforms. None. Nobody has good gray uniforms. So many teams have tried them and they're all horrible. That's a good take because you want the contrast. Ultimately, gray is just a media, you know, says the lunatic with gray hair. And I mean, Utah's helmet should be terrible, but I love them anyway. And Wake is just continuing to crush cow, crush cow yikes. We will get to a little bit in the tomorrow's top 25 today, reranking the top 25 brought to you by Midello. But the conversations going in the tailgate will get a little teaser here in the first 15 minutes of the show. Do you think BYU has a claim to number one? Yeah, who doesn't have a claim to them? I mean, it's they've got, let's see, the undefeated teams are now Miami, UCLA, BYU, Utah, Texas, tech. BYU's got the best win out of all of them. And what did Miami do? Miami needed overtime to beat Florida State. Two over times, right? Yeah. Well, it should have been one with Mario Mario. Oh, yeah, it should have gone for two. I was thinking about that at the time. Like the play they ran when they did go for two in the second. I'm like, if you had just run that play in the first overtime, the game is over. I mean, we don't time did it right last week. Well, I, I'm, I respect Mario crystal ball so much. I wish he was a big fan of the cover three podcasts, like so many others. He would have known that clearly that was the move to go. Let's, let's go ahead and move there. We'll get to the losses for Georgia, the losses for Texas, the loss for Alabama, the win for Tennessee and what all those chaotic results in the SEC might mean. But that was one of my biggest question marks of the last hour or so was who was going to end up at the top spot. And Miami made this way tougher than it probably should have been. So, bud, what? How many teams will get votes? Total. Oh, for number one, no, we'll do that and reranking the top 25. I want to go to Miami. I want to go to Miami like in general. Yeah, I thought Miami was like pretty sloppy in that game. And you know, like Florida State played hard. It's, dude, I'm crushed for Chroma. Man, like that, that looked bad. Yeah, I hope I'm wrong on that, you know, like Florida State battled, they played hard. You know, Miami, Miami gets a win, playing pretty sloppy. You know, like I think that was probably pretty close to Florida State's A game. And probably Miami's like, be honest. I mean, possibly. You know, when it lost the DB to the targeting and Fitzgerald went down, I was like, oh, we might be able to throw it on them some because they already have Fred Reak out or what I assume is a long term thing, right? But then, you know, if Fitzgerald came back in, they hit the huge pass to do down the sideline, which was fantastic. I thought Norvell did a really good job calling the screen game all night, right? And honestly, like, I think Heather Vins are great coordinator. And I thought Norvell had a really well-time screen, you know, screens tonight on him. You know, ultimately defensively, you just don't have very good players over there. And they played hard. You know, a lot of those guys probably shouldn't be wearing FSU jerseys, to be honest. Like, they're not talented enough, in my opinion, to play the school, you know, that you grew up rooting for. But they played hard. And, you know, like, honestly, I thought Mensa was a little loose with it tonight, right? And just in terms of like vacating pockets a little bit early, which usually he's great against pressure. You got two four downstops as well. Like, in Miami, stopped you twice on four down. You stopped them twice on four down. And that was, it was a wild game to watch. You know, I kind of thought, okay, you know, once they scored, he got a touchdown late and then, you know, do skits open and, and boom, tie ball game, let's see what we got. I think we just have to going forward. We have to have the principal that like, big came Norvell. Like, if it's a game, Miami's, or Florida states really not supposed to have any chance to win. Those are the best games that Florida state's going to play. Like, last year, they beat Alabama this year, they kind of hung with Alabama, I guess, for a little bit, but they, they hung with SMU. Then they do this tonight. It's just, okay, I mean, that maybe I should have just taken the plus 21. I don't know, but like, it was the worst I've seen Miami look in a game this year. And I mean, I don't, I think it's the first team they really played with athletes. Yeah, like, you know, so, yeah, like Florida state deserves credit for it. Yeah. Like Florida state deserves credit for it, but that was the worst I've seen Miami at this point this season. The sloppiness in the red zone area kind of gave us old dairy immense of vibes in terms of times where we've seen sort of the ups and downs for him. Something that where, you know, when, when they needed to get out of trouble, it felt like it was more put the ball in Tony's hands and let him go save the day, then necessarily letting dairy immense be able to take any more responsibility on his plate than he was putting with the way he was trying to extend the plays force plays trying to sort of play a little bit of hero ball late in the game. Fletcher got a little bit banged up. They had to go deep into that running back room deeper into the game, but offensive line continued to try to, you know, lean on Florida state. That game even, you know, had to come down to a late review, what I did not get the final explanation on the audio for what happened, but I think this might have been a catch. I'm not saying like, I don't know that it was a catch, but like, I don't think they had a good angle to, like, if you look at this, it looks like Duce's hands are under the ball and the ball is in the guy's lap, right? There. Yeah, like his hands, the DB's hands are under the ball. I think Duce's hands are on the ball and the ball is like on this guy's sack, right? So, you know, I kind of look more like a touchdown, but again, with number, whatever number this is, with his legs in the way, you really can't tell exactly exactly where it is. Like, like, is that brown? No, number two's legs are really like blocking the shot you would need, I think, to overturn the call of pick on the field. I'm a little curious how they got the call of pick on the field. Like, they took forever to call it and they're like, ah, I don't think Duce fought hard enough for the ball. I think if Duce had been like struggling to hold on to the ball and wrestling for it, they probably wouldn't have so easily said interception, but Duce just kind of like, he also really didn't really sell it. No, that's what I'm saying. So, all they saw was like, when they finally got into the pile, they had the Miami guys hands were on it. So, they called it an interception. I have no idea if it was a casual interception. Since they called it an interception, I can't really understand. Yeah, Fitzgerald was credited with the I&T. For those who were listening at home, we're watching it. Tomorrow Brown was the player who is a little bit blocking the view to see exactly where the ball was right there among those secondary players. Duce Robinson, Deami Brown, and Bryce Fitzgerald. I feel like all three of those guys are going to be in the NFL. So, maybe they'll end up fighting for a touchdown pass at some point three years down the road on Sundays. On the Miami side, you check a rivalry box and you've got some things that you need to clean up. You're happy to be able to get out with the win on the Florida State side. Does this calm, the outrage? Does this put some of the some of the torches at least are put in the water for a week or two? I mean, if you want to sell it, I guess, like they're not building anything, you know, like they're recruiting sucks. Like you won't have dues next year, right? Like, I don't think anybody's excited. Oh, yeah, you, you, you,
He lost another game, right? Like, this is for state you want to win those games. Like, cool, you played hard. You know what, you also got lucky as hell to lose by the amount you did to SMU. You got out gained by like double. It was like 600, 300. You know, they don't fumble the ball six times to you. They're just, there's no momentum. They're not building anything. Like, they're not bringing good players. It's, like, we've seen this team quit on Norvel how many times. Like, cool, congrats. You guys played hard tonight in a rivalry game. I'm sure you'll choke away three or four more this year. Like, like, I don't know. None of my buddies are like, oh, man, like, I was so proud of that. No, I think they're done with them. Now, is the administration gonna try to sell this to try to keep them to save money? Possibly, I don't know. Or at least not get your ducks in a row to move right now. Because that's like, as I can, you know, continue to sort of think through this and work through what the process is moving forward. When you don't have an athletic director, you need to, you need to do a little bit more work to get your ducks in a row to be able to make moves, right, bud? I mean, you, you're, I don't, I don't think that, I don't think that you need an AD to, to make a move there. No, but I'm saying it's harder to get your ducks in a row because you've got a lot of people who all would want a say. Possibly, I don't think the old AD had the say anyway. You know, like, I think they probably had those conversations. But I, I think that if they can find a way to not do it, then you know, they probably will try to take that out. I also think, I mean, you know, like the, do you need to have the money together for the buyout to get out of the ACC, right? Like, is that going to come faster than people think? You know, look, guys, the American is not interested in expanding. Boom, next week, hey, Jamie is going to the American, right? Like that, the biggest tell of the conference expansion is coming is vehement denial from the destination conference. All right, I'll tell you what thing I'm sure is held not doing is talking fantasy conference realignment after a day like today. We already put to kabosh. We, we are saying no on any of this playoff expansion. I think we're, you can me. We ain't talking about the conference expansion tonight. Yeah. I don't think we're going to have a, I don't think we're going to have an emergency reaction show tomorrow. We could. Okay. I don't know if we will. As we discussed, all angels choir sing it. Yeah. So I think if you're going to do it, you need to have some strangeless debate in the morning before you go. Hold it. You know, coming up on the other side with all the chaos, there was like an awesome super, super thrilling game between top five opponents that came down to the wire and gave us some seriously like season shifting developments in addition to the result. We'll get into all that and more. Next. Did they, they should have kicked this Nebraska or game off at like 1 a.m. It's going to be us to watch this that this is horrendous. I should, I might, I might need to put Mississippi state back in the top 25. Oh, this is even after the loss. It is genuinely funny that like New Mexico at Hawaii started like 45 minutes before Nebraska at Oregon did. Yeah. It's a little bit. Let the record show for all, for all the haters and the naysayers that we have discussed, both BYU and Notre Dame and Miami and Florida State before we've gotten to our first SEC team. And you're going to why would we talk about that loser conference because everybody that we've lost. You're going to have to keep waiting before because, well, because here's the thing, Tom, once we start untangling a little bit of that knot, we're going to get to all the rest of it, right? And then we're just going to be stuck. So let's talk about the top five match up in the big 10 before we get there. So big headline Ohio State survives. Nick Marsh was one step away from an unbelievable fourth down potential game winning touchdown. What an awesome back and forth. Maybe we can get these guys to play again for a big 10 title. Maybe we'll get to see them one more time. But oh, no, what did it cost? Maybe you're starting quarterback because while the buck guys, we're victorious in Bloomington for one of the best wins of the season. They also lost their starting quarterback Julian say into an injury. He goes down with an apparent upper body arm slash shoulder injury comes back out of the locker room with the sling. A few weeks is the diagnosis from Ryan Day, who declares he is not a doctor, but assumes that it will be a while before he's back. Luke Faye, he comes in. And buddy, there's a, there's a big, there's a big difference between Julian saying in Luke Faye, he, not just in height and not just in height. I mean, we were talking about like top five or five star prospect at the top of his class to just inside the top 40 of all of the quarterbacks in his class, coming out of high school. But the boy had some wheels they had him out here scooting. He was able to pick up a big conversion. He was able to help the buck guys be able to get across the finish line to a big win my, oh my, what a, what a slobber knocker, Tom, what you, what, what comes to mind first before we get to the Julian saying injury, how did we get to the way that this game unfolded? First of all, that's got to be a top five worst way to lose a game ever. First stepping out of the fan, yeah, just from because you thought everybody in that stadium thought that was a touchdown. And then you say, you think you've won the game and it's, oh, no, his foot was out of bounds and also shout out to that one camera man for just a really, here it is. Just, uh, they didn't show up. But the camera man gets really right into his face, you can just see the heartbreak. And I thought he was doing OH. I thought he was taunting because he did hands on the helmet. And then he did hands up for touchdown. And I thought he was doing an OH taunting and he thought he was in. But now I realized that it was, uh, it was actually, yeah, that's not OH. That was, uh, that was realizing immediately that your left foot had stepped out of bounds. As for the game itself, just two bad performances by the quarterbacks. Oh, yeah, neither one was, uh, no, neither quarterback played well. I thought the defenses did play well. I thought, honestly, Indiana's defense played better, but Ohio State just had a little more in offense. And then they also just had, you know, Julian saying fourth down, just throw it down there, you know, Jeremiah Smith just like, he's down there somewhere because that was just, uh, that was like, uh, you're 16 year old cousin playing with all the eight year olds at like the family picnic on that touchdown, where he just reached up and grabbed it with everybody around him. So I, and that was honestly the difference in the game was Jeremiah Smith making one play in a fourth down in the end zone. But like you look at the overall numbers, like Julian saying before he got hurt, it was only 15 to 29. He had two interceptions. He was missing guys. Joshua was 20, 40, he had a touchdown and no interception, but he was missing guys and he probably should have had an interception to neither team was able to run the ball. Indiana had the better past rush on the day, which is what we talked about all week is what it's why I took Indiana plus three and a half. I thought that past rush was going to prove to be the difference for him. But this was, this was not a very pretty football game. This was not a, it was a lot like last year's Big Ten championship where the defense is just can kind of completely dominated it from start to finish. And then you add on the injury at the end of Julian saying and it's just, it's like Indiana lost in heart, in heart breaking fashion. But I feel like Indiana isn't a better spot right now than how state is, know how state won the damn game because Julian saying's out several weeks. You're on a buy this week, but you've got USC. You've got Oregon. You've got Nebraska. You've got Northwestern team. It's five and one. You've got Michigan. Like if he's missing time and you've got that kid who's no taller than five, seven playing quarterback. How the hell are you going to win games? Yeah, I, I thought, honestly, like a state defensively did a great job of making Indiana be one-dimensional. Like Indiana's run game was trash today. I thought Ohio State at least had some kind of balance on offense with it. Like Indiana, they, even some of their yards were like kind of inconsequential, you know, like we're running for six on, on third and nine in your own territory where you're not going to go, like you're not setting anything up, you know. And I think you do feel better about Indiana though, right? Like, okay, you had Jeremiah make just an absolute freak show play in the end zone. Like Tom said, it's a pool basketball play right when you're tired of, you just want to go inside. Like I'm going to call game here. I was going to turn it on. I'm done with everybody. You know, so, like I think both these teams are still really good. Do we think stands like a collarbone or what? Shoulder. Shoulder said great. It's like a dislocated shoulder or a collarbone, either way, he's going to be out for a bit. Yeah. I feel like collarbones have like cover three podcast is not a doctor, not a doctor. Right. I'm a doctor. Doctor, I bought it. I bought a degree online from it like a bar bar betos. Yeah. I, I think like with the collarbone, it's either longer or you're fine, right? It's like, okay, like it's bruised up and you're good, especially with the buy. So I would, I would get shoulder here to directly speculate. Your AC/DC joint, you know, whatever it is. Yeah, exactly. I mean, you know, saying, I think is a good quarterback. I don't think he's amazing, but I agree with Tom. Like the drop off is substantial there, but also like, you know, you're not playing Indiana's defense again this year. Unless you play in the big 10 title again, like Indiana is very good defensively. The other teams we just rattled off are not as good defensively as Indiana is now granted. Your margin for air is going to be smaller with Luke Fahey in there, but, you know, you may only need to score like high teens, low 20s, given the defense that you have, you know.
But I assume they get Jay Timmons back, right? Like when he went down Indiana started to go off a little bit, also like Hoover started to settle down a little bit. Like they span the hell out of the little high low concepts to the sideline to Becker. He missed the first two, right? And then he hit like four or five more of those. But Timmons stood for the Ohio State defense and like I didn't realize he was gonna matter that much to them until he went out. He was like, oh, okay, like that's a problem. I think Ohio State's probably fine, but like again, yeah, you're right. If your career is smaller now, for sure. - It's very concerned that it's making you more. - So any concern that it's Fahey and not St. Clair? - I think St. Clair was always very bummer bust as a prospect, you know, like you take him because you're Ohio State, right? And if he hits, awesome, like that's the level, you know, St. Clair who hits is the level of player, it's very hard to get out of the portal. You know, if he doesn't hit, you bring somebody else in, right? Fahey's listed 5/11, by the way. He is not 5/11. I don't care what they list him at. Just seeing him standing next to his teammates, there's no way that kid is 5/11. How tall is Bo Jackson? 'Cause unless Bo Jackson's 6/3, he's not 5/11. - I think Bo Coo, I don't have a depth chart pulled up right now. I've got Bo probably, if I was to guess, what like 6 to 15? - Yeah, well, he was towering over Fahey. - Yeah, that's. - I liked what I saw from Indian. - He literally, they had the screen pass and he hit his line and on the back of the head with the throw. - Right. - That's a tiny, tiny, tiny young man. - Are we worried about any Indian at all, really? - No, I'm not. - I loved what I saw from Indian. It's defense to your point. They just, did you see Kurt Signeti before the game? - I missed two. - Jenny Tav. How do you contain Jeremiah Smith? You hit the quarterback before you can throw? - Yeah, I mean, let's go. - The saying injury today, even though I guess Indian lost, I feel like they wrapped up the Big Ten. - If saying gets back, I disagree. - I haven't done the, I haven't crunched the chip-a-litx on what all the head-to-head, so it's like the rest. - There's schedule for me here on out is much more difficult than Indiana's. And they're gonna play at least one of those games with a backup QB. - I mean, they're scheduled again. From here on out, it's USC Oregon, Northwestern, Nebraska, Michigan. There are no Rutgers or Maryland's or Michigan States or Penn States on there. Indiana from here on out is Michigan, Minnesota, USC, Washington Purdue. - I will say from the vibes department because a 22 game winning streak did come to a close. There might have been some water finding its level after a toe tap against Penn State after digging your way out of some holes after getting on just the right side of a few little spots. Yeah, this came up a little bit short and Jeremiah Smith was able to, like you said, sort of big cousin of them there in the end zone, but not a lot of panic for the Hoosiers, but great, great win for Ohio State will continue to discuss what it means from like a resume profile standpoint, but as Tom and Bud have both mentioned here, the absence of Julian saying looms large for the Buckeyes as they continue to navigate the next couple of weeks, which includes multiple teams, not just with a pulse, but like really good roster talent. So it'll be an interesting test for Ryan Day coming out of what was otherwise a winning week. Okay, now everybody gets here, where's Maya? All right, we got to talk about the SEC now. - Five top 20 wins today, Chip, for the SEC. - Five top 20 wins. Damn, how bad are, how many top 20 losses? - Five, okay. - Let us begin with the Florida Gators in the Texas Longhorns, because before we get to the Georgia Bulldogs who were number one losing, Georgia loses to Auburn, and it's honestly a huge moment for Auburn, sloppy performance for the Bulldogs, but it doesn't have as much existential dread as Texas losing again to an unranked opponent. Then after reaching number one in the AP Top 25 poll, the Texas Longhorns have gone through this season, they lose to unranked Oklahoma, they lose to unranked Florida. And in both of these games, we've got just back breaking turnovers from arch-maning, we've got offensive performances that are abysmal compared to the talent that's been assembled. And Steve Sarkisian gets to the post-game press conference and indicates that everything is on the line, at least in terms of any possible changes that could be coming for an offense that is letting down an elite defense when it comes to competition that Texas has faced in the South Eastern Conference. - So, yes, bud. - I bet you, he said, look, everything's up for evaluation. I bet you, if you interviewed his boss, he probably agree with that. - Yeah. - Yep. - Yeah. - You think he's gonna be able to do the plate collar? - I think they missed the playoff there on FireSark, yeah. I think they're about done with that act there. If they missed the playoff. Do you know what they, actually, I meant to take this down earlier. - Oh, your banner? - Sadly, the Tar Heels are no longer the closest margin versus Notre Dame. That would be the BYU Cougars. They finished with a little plus, plus four on the closest margin. It's okay, there were some other wins today for the Tar Heels. - I guess that win was meaningless for you. But the reason why it comes to mind right now, is just thinking about this Texas team that is going all in on this season and been very public about how they've been all in on this season because, bud, that's what they did, the Hubert Davis. They said, we're all, we made it very clear. Everybody's going all in. We're chit like this, this is the squad. Your coach and chops are going to be put on the lawn. Steve Sarkeesian's coach and chops are put on the lawn. It's got best roster you could ask for. Lamborghini's out in front of DKR. Arch Maining. Arch Maining, Arch Maining, Arch Maining, Arch Maining. NFL Draftstock, you know, like is Arch Maining a fraud and NFL Draftstock? Go ahead and goose the SEO. But if this team ends up eight and four, weeesh, I think that they would, I would understand if the administration would be fed up with it at this point. I mean, when I did about preseason rate because I had Texas seventh and if you guys remember, Twitter got mad shockingly, because I had an asterisk next to Texas and the asterisk said, if I trusted Sarke, Texas number one, 'cause that looks like the best roster in the country and they don't play like it again. No run game, like there's no flow to the offense right now. It's like, you know, Arch save us on these deep shots, which he hit one, he missed two other ones. I've, you know, I'm, I'm like, what is going on there? You know, if you're flying the wall in text practice, I bet you they'd be pretty revealing. I think there are a lot of problems for Texas. I think the primary one is that Tramel Jones outplayed Arch Maining. And Tramel was not even asked to do a lot in-- - Arch game. - I mean, there were 4.3 yards per pass play. - Yeah, they, exactly. Like they weren't throwing much down the field but neither was Arch until like Arch was averaging about five and a half yards per attempt before he hit like that 60 yard bomb in the fourth quarter when the-- - And that was a great play no doubt, but the rest of it-- - Yeah, but the game was done. But like, so, I mean, I said it during the week, if Arch doesn't tear apart this Florida defense that has been torn apart by everybody, you kind of have to bench him. - Who do you put in though? Like do you trust KJ Lacey? - Like, dude, if you don't-- - I don't trust Arch. - If you think Luke Fahey is small. - Put in Diabelle, I don't trust Arch at this point. Like, I mean, I know what I have in him and he's shown me so many times that he's just not consistent. I can't live with two good possessions a game and I can win a national title. That's my goal. - We got on you as a lot when it bogged down too, you know? I'm not trying to say Arch is playing super well. Like, I mean, they just make a lot of dumb mistakes, man. Like as a team. - I thank you. That's what kind of one thing that I wanted to make sure that we called out is that it was the dumb penalties, you know? - Like 74 and not trying to pick up the script. - Yeah, I'm not jumping on the ball. - Bro, jump on the ball. - Your number is 74. What are you doing? - This is moment of glory. He could have stressed. - He could have stressed. - Fall starts holding penalties. I mean, just like total bend your head against the wall type stuff. How about this? When Texas got out to that lead, they begged to lose. You know, they, I mean, they came out of halftime. What did I have to set? Three and out, three and out, turnover on downs at midfield. Combine it with the fourth down stop near midfield in the first half. And it's where all of the high leverage plays were lost. All of them. John Someroll said,
we played as bad as we could play in that first quarter and credit our guys for hanging in. And you know what, John? Hell yeah. Credit the Gators for hanging in. The defense played better all throughout that second half. It's not all going to be laid at Texas's failures. Like this Florida team played a very imperfect game with a backup quarterback and beat the Texas Longhorns in Austin. Hell yeah. But also what an indictment of the Texas Longhorns that they let that happen. That's a question. Don't want to take away from the excellent performance by the Florida Gators. What defense hasn't looked good against Texas this year? Texas State UTSA. What who's Texas torn apart outside? I mean, even in that UTSA game, you can look at the stats. I shouldn't believe very well. No, like that. That was the concerning one to me. Yeah. They put up 20 on Tennessee, 24 in Oklahoma, 24 in Florida, 24 in Ohio state. It's not like this is a great offense. Florida finally found somebody they could stop sometimes. They leaned on Ohio State in the fourth quarter and that team was a little gas. I mean, that defense was a little bit gas. Good job. That, you know, I'm going to credit to that. But that was not an entire game. Texas had what three points going into the fourth quarter in that game. Yeah. Yeah. Defense kept them in that game. Yeah. Which by the way, like taking his back full circle real quick to Ohio State, much better run defense gets in Indiana than against Texas. Like Texas ran it off in the second half. You know, like we were like, Hey, is Ohio State's entourage line? You know, what it normally is. And maybe not. But like they played much better today. I was like, like now back to Texas. What's their remaining schedule now? Next it's old miss. Then it's Mississippi state. Then it's at Mizzou. Then it's at LSU. Then it's at Arkansas. They're not at its first Arkansas. And it's at Texas. Hey, now, I mean, they could realistically win out. It's just, I have no faith in them to do it. We talked about a big break down how important this one was to get. Because if there's one, you really shouldn't be losing to Arkansas arena. Just give it how they look. You can afford to slip up, you know, in two of the remaining three and still get to where you want to go. You know. And if Camario still limited for Mississippi state, we saw how that goes. Yeah. Even if he's not like if Collins Simmons is back, you know, like, like, state against state against real edge wrestlers has problems. Collins Simmons injury. Obviously pretty significant here. Not great. Do we know what actually I didn't see him go down because I had a bunch of games on us trying to watch. You went off on the cart, right? Yeah. Oh, okay. Then that's not good. There's a lot of injuries today, man. Like a bunch. Yeah. And that's not even considering all the backup quarterbacks that we had, you know, coming all day long or all weekend long, even back on Friday night. Okay. Quickly. Yes. We will credit the LSU here. LSU did what you should do against Mississippi state without for all world quarterback. But the chat once is a credit LSU. Yeah. Cool. You didn't screw around against the backup for Mississippi state. What was the same pocket, right? I didn't watch the second of that game. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I wanted to get four quad boxes to have that on my screen. Oh, that was not under. But once Camario was out of like, no, I'm going to get it. It was Parker pocket, which yeah, I was about to say, it's either pocket or duck it. I that man was putting on for a city. All right. I saw he was trying so hard because LSU's defense was flying around. Like Benfield was picking them off. Like he was throwing passes where no one was like LSU's defense, which is very good. And we've talked about a lot was absolutely feasting on Mississippi state's new starting quarterback who was put in the uninviable position of trying to live up to the impossible to fill shoes of Camario Taylor. But he ran for some first down conversions. He was out there. He was trying his best. Tom, you know, I tell you what, I will remember the effort that the young Mr. Puckett had here on this Saturday. Parker pocket will forever be a hero to me. I had the Mississippi state team total under 20 and a half. And I never even had to like even look at that score because I knew that was good in the first quarter. I tell you what, Puckett's no tie deep in box when it comes to the backup quarterbacks. We were able to come out and get it done. But he he certainly at least, at least I saw some moxie that was worth complimenting here on an instant reaction show. Parker pocket does sound like a golfer. It went to Georgia does. Yeah, I would agree with that. When you when you start to look into Georgia's loss to Auburn, Kirby smart said after the Oklahoma game, you know, we talk about the dogs. Don't beat the dogs today, you know, Oklahoma beat the Oklahoma home. You know, they beat themselves today. He meant he referenced that old saying again, and he said, you know, we beat ourselves. That'd be minus three in the turnover margin. That would be back breaking turnovers at all of the worst opportunities. Credit to Byron Brown for hanging in gutsy performance from him at the quarterback position for the Tigers. A lot of cool sort of vibes, big picture stuff from Alex Goulish, I think coming out of this win. I think Marcelo was there, right? He wrote a hell of a column coming out of it, but this would. Georgia just got to number one, and they're already losing in one of their big rivalry games and doing so at home. Auburn hasn't had that kind of success in Sanford Stadium in quite a while. You referenced it at the top of the show, Tom. In a day that gave us some good memories that these things exist, not just in the context of one season or a playoff era, but truly like tens and 20s and 30s and hundreds of years. What would you make out of Auburn being able to get to get some gutsy performances in a 27, 24 win in Athens? I mean, it's a huge win for that program right now in their first year under Alex Goulish to get a road win on Georgia when it's been, I mean, how many years has it been since they won there? Like a billion? It's not a billion. Hold on. It's close to. Like, it has been a very long time. Auburn went into Athens and came home with a win between the edges, but that it's a huge Iron Brown ran wild in the first half, helped lead, get them out to that lead. And then it was kind of just holding on for dear life in the second half. Defensively, you harassed and you harangued, gunner stocked in and you got him to make some really dumb decisions, commit a few turnovers. Like the one he went full rail on where he just like jumped off his back foot into the air and like through a fade away trying to get it over a defender and just went right into the other player's hands. Just really, really bad decision. And it was weird because gunner looked so good last week against Alabama. And then he looked so bad today. It was just a complete 180 from where he was last week. But yeah, you can't, you know, you're not good enough to commit three turnovers and expect to win this game. Auburn made better than they have been. Shout out to John Raimi in the tailgate, by the way, the tailgate rocking and rolling. If you were here, by the way, and we've got an awesome audience here, please subscribe to the channel. We are the Cover 3 podcast. If you're new here, we go live every single Saturday night to recap all of the insane action that was. We'll be here next week, the week after that week after that. So on and so forth. Hit that subscribe. We really appreciate it along the way. John Raimi called it is 2005 is the last time that Auburn's won at Georgia. So how many times it, how many times Georgia put the ball in the ground last week against Auburn? Four four. How many times I lose it? None. Right. How many balls that should have been picked at Stockton Stockton throw last week? Two, right? Two. And one and a half. None were called to pick. Right. How many, how many completions did he have last week that were tipped for first downs? A couple. Right. He made a lot of really good throws last week is my point. But he also did some stuff last week. And Georgia did some stuff last week overall that if the luck swings the other way, this is not Georgia's first loss of the season. You know what I mean? And today I felt like Auburn did a good job of just not allowing the explosive place. You know, like they made Georgia just in a box and you're looking here. You know, Georgia had what they have two past plays over 25 yards. I mean, only four rushes total over 10 like that. That's you kind of want to have a little more than that. You know, and I thought it was I felt like they just could never like break it open, break it open. Um, and Auburn just felt like they played harder, you know, like what, which is part of it. They wanted it more. Yeah. It's hard doing his Georgia, man. You know, I made the joke on Twitter like, oh, Elon released the flying car and now George looks distracted. But I mean, you know, it's, they just look like like it looked like Georgia maybe just didn't take him super seriously. But Kirby said they had a good week of practice and, you know, like, yeah, I know. That was funny. Oh, yeah. It's, I didn't think of that. That's actually, I mean, correlation isn't necessarily causation, but you do have to admit that there's some strange timing there. Yeah. Our friend ANT Fowl, though, compared archman.
to a Tesla. Everything looks great on paper and there's a video of him flying, but then the door's locked and the car flows up. So, you know, he's just got to agree to give it up. He's got to agree to let somebody else drive. Yeah. Yeah, hell of a win for Auburn here. How about this? Xavier Atkins, arguably your best defensive player suspended, kind of on like obviously a team rules type stuff. Thought the defense played really well. You know, they showed up here on fire ready to go. That was a, that was a strong performance of them. Stop the run, put gunner in some difficult positions and yeah, you, it looked man. It looked like Gunner was just going to lead them back into this until that fumble. One drive he did. Well, the touchdown and he delivered the strike on the touchdown pass was really nice. And he kind of started to sense like, okay, Auburn, that was cute. Let's touch, let's patch you on the head. You know, nice effort. Come back next year, good building block, but finish the job. Good job, Tigers. War day, Amigo. That was a, that was a big one. It's like uncharacteristic. Like you're roughing the passer on a bubble screen, which was not even completed. Like what? And like, I know, maybe Byron Brown, maybe the throwing emotion being as slow as it is is like bait for rush, rough in the passer, you know, because it kind of lets you get a little closer because it's so wide enough with it, right? But I mean, you really can't be rough in the passer and taking two steps on loading on a bubble screen. No, it's probably not what we need to do there. Not the, not the ideal situation. So we've talked before anything else on Auburn, Georgia. Do you think Gunner was like messed up because they hit? He might have been. He might have been. He did not play a clean game afterwards. Yeah, I do. Like, I think it's very possible George is still the best team in the country. You know, like I think there's there's firmly in that conversation. It would not surprise if he comes out and just totally rips it next week or when they buy it by next week. Yeah, before you go to the Florida game, which will be in the big body bends, right? Yeah. Oh, that's right. It's not in Jacksonville this year. Oh, so now that's now the college football ruined. I guess a great win for Auburn though. Yeah, they needed that for sure. You've got the body blow theory, which we, you know, oftentimes will apply moving forward to one side. Is it double body blow that Alabama also wasn't quite ready for the, for the way in against Tennessee? I know. You're going to put that up to the injuries. I mean, because they just were getting worked at the line of scrimmage. I think there was a few things. I think A Tennessee's defense is just good. Fair. And we did a good job of highlighting that on this show. We've got a large enough sample size to this point to be like that. That defense is just good. And we talked about it a little bit on the big game breakdown. It's like you, you are coming off that loss. But, you know, this is Keelan Russell. He's still a very young quarterback. He's going on the road in a place that is very difficult to play with a very good defense. And I think that kind of played out in this game. I mean, both teams just played this thing in a phone booth. Like real struggles hit explosive plays, especially through the air. I, I did it. Gangers had something to do with it. Like, yeah, like Tennessee has a real defense. And they caused like chip nailed it. They caused it. This is exactly what we were worried about on Loxpod. Like when, when you, I think you and I both took under, right? Or at least liked it. You know, I had under 50, whatever it was. I'm like, bam is going to struggle to block them a little bit. And now you don't have Coleman Williams. So you can really focus on Brooks. You know, like, there's not another receiver out there for Bama that really scares you. What did Brooks have today? Three for 26. He had a lot of attention for sure and well deserved obviously. You know, three targets today. That kind of tells you how much bracket they're playing on him. I love to Sean Bishop continuing his just absolute war path that he's been on all season long. You know, I mean, they're going to ask him to carry the ball 32 times a game. And he's going to keep running for 150 yards if they do. I mean, he's just he works hard. He runs through arm tackles. He tests you. He wears you down over the course of a game to be able to do it against Alabama was not a surprise, but certainly was absolutely necessary. You weren't going to put George McIntyre in a position to ask him to go and save the day and throw it all over the yard. So to be able to get another productive day out of Bishop was huge defense as we mentioned was fantastic. And Alabama just man, they did not have anything later in this game from to my eye. Once it started to slip away, it started to go really, really fast. I mean, you got to remember, their touchdown drive came after an interception. It was 14 yards. They had a field goal drive that was 31 yards. Like the longest drive that Alabama had in this game was for 62 yards, 11 for 62. And you know what drive that was? There are last possession of the game where Tennessee was kind of just, you know, they were up 16. I was going to say they had an explosive run with Hill when he broke up the middle and like kind of got the ball close to midfield, but even that position ended in a punt. Yeah. They did nothing on offense in this. Yeah. And like I thought like watching this in real time, like Tennessee is going to really regret settling for all these field goals. Agree. I know. I thought so too. You know, and like Tennessee's offense never really got going much and Bama's offense like never got off the bus at all. So yeah, because it was nine to nothing. They threw the interception. And then in Alabama had the shortfield and Russell gets that touchdown run. And it was at that point. I was like, okay. Yeah. They're going to know how this goes. Yeah. Yeah. And then no, because they just didn't didn't break. So awesome, awesome win for Tennessee. Lighting up the C-gars and how about Josh Hyple, you know, just every now and then you get one of those coaches who is able to deliver acceptable results, but more than anything win the game that you absolutely have to win. Three wins against Alabama in Knoxville since he took over. Like I cannot smoke it, but I would if I could. This one's for you, Tennessee. There we go. Remember the first of the Josh Hyple wins when when Jordan was producing. Yep. And we couldn't we couldn't obtain proper C-gars. So we just had black and mouth. Yep. It's your podcast. We've upgraded since then chip. Well, no, I've just gotten used to Tennessee winning, Tom. That was the thing is when they won the game back in 2022, we had never seen it, right? Or at least not in the lifespan of the cover 3 podcast. And so now it's 222, 224, 226. I mean, shoot. It's a between the C-gars and the dirty soda's out in Provo. You know, it's a special night. It's a sinful Saturday. How do you know the cover 3 podcast? But but really, really, of course, our eyes are always on keeping traditions alive. The college football traditions. I mean, you know, I mean, Tennessee is dreaming about playoff now. Yeah. They're legitimately in the condo. So are the Kentucky wild cats who now have a win over Oklahoma in Norman on a Saturday night. And are literally tied for first in the SEC with Georgia. That was one of the most mature games we've ever seen. Explain. I love it. But go ahead. Well, it wasn't it wasn't like hey, like I'm throwing the ball on the ball inside of my hand backward. It was just I can't read a defense save my life. And like literally the two Kentucky safes knock each other out because they are in better position to catch the interception of middle of the field than anybody for Oklahoma is like like, did you see this play time? Yes. If you guys haven't watched it, it's hilarious. Like they're both so one of the cat. It is now the one guy does catch it. It was what do you throw four picks? Three or three because of the field goal. Okay, everyone. That picks it. Which is open, by the way, if he just like, I know people hate the call, but like they probably clearly saw something. They slipped the guy out. He's open. If you hit him at all, like he walks in, but but he did. No, he did not. No. No. I mean, it's listen, they got that win last week and that was great for them. But we even talked about it last week. It's like it's not like Oklahoma. It was so cool in that game. Yeah, it was such a, it was a college football game that ended in their favor and they continued to play poorly again tonight, except tonight. They played a team. Although I will say, Will Stein has made a lot of smart decisions in overtime, a lot of aggressive decisions. Going forward, I'm like that fourth and sixth at the 10 when a field goal would have put them up, but like not a full touchdown, but would have forced Oklahoma to have a touchdown to take the lead. Bad decision. You didn't pay for it, but you should have kicked that field goal. It's one of those ones where the analytics probably say go, but given how the home it was planned and has played all your own offense, I think you can argue for checking it. Yeah. It was, uh, they were up 10 to 7 or 13 to 7 at the time. I think I can't remember what the score was or no head of it. Yeah, because I know. No, no, they were up 14 to 13 and the field goal would have put them up 17 to 13. Yeah.
I mean, what was his heart is pulling this up here? Like, this is. Sorry. Oh, you. Yes. No, nevermind. I can't find it. He did not have a great game, but I will say shout out to Kenny Minci for not turning the ball over. He obviously wants that offense well. Yeah. He did like one, like, oh, no, that's Yolo stuff, but like for the most part, like, I'm best. I'm just being as a year before the point. Like, hey, if it's not there, like, get out. He understood the assignment, which you cannot say of his counterpart. That's 100% fair. On a busy chaotic hectic college football Saturday, we have discussed here on this incident reaction show. Sometimes there are results, there are games that unfold where you get a feel for what's happening. And maybe your attention can turn at what point in Ole Miss Missouri did that happen for you? 21-3 when Missouri, when Missouri's drive to answer ended, I mean, I turned it off at that point. I don't even know what the fuck. Could not move the football on the ground. All the time. All the time. I was like, on point. I was like, oh. Yeah. But that one wasn't. I had to answer these, like, he was dotting them, but the counter, like the skeleton key that unlocks Missouri's offense to my eye is always being able to run the football. And they couldn't. And they couldn't. And I didn't see that coming against this Ole Miss defense. Ole Miss did the Mizzou, but Mizzou did the Florida pretty much. Ole Miss Rundee, look, against Louisville, which is a good running attack, they bottled them out with the exception of Lincoln running it, right? For at least a lot of that game, trying to think about it. But then they got carved up by a Florida. Mm-hmm. Right. No, they carved Florida. No. No, no. Ole Miss got carved up by Florida. Ole Miss defense got carved up by Florida. Yes, yes, yes. But that was also the emotional come down from the LSU game, so, but no, I just, yeah, they took away Mizzou's run game. And that is the worst I, like, I'm sure there's been other bad games, but in my memory right at the top of my head, I was like, I couldn't remember a Mizzou rushing offense look worse in the game, underdrink. No, in the last three to four years, they've had one of the best rushing offenses in the SEC. Mm-hmm. It was great job by Ole Miss defense, surprising performance, honestly, by Ole Miss's defense. But, yeah, when Mizzou had no chance to be able to move the football on the ground, life got very hard for Austin Simmons. Great job by Pete Golding. Look, they went into the by-week. They came out. They thrashed Vandy. We, I don't want to speak for you all, but didn't feel like anyone was ready to overreact to that result individually. Maybe they cleaned some stuff up with a defense that had a lot of new pieces coming into the season, an emotional start with the win against LSU, the loss to Florida. Maybe they're starting to find their groove, and you talk about a squad that gets mentioned a lot when someone's trying to find the next team that's going to get picked off and exposed. Ole Miss was probably on someone's board as maybe not being the same in quality as they are to the ranking that they hold, but this is a solid performance against a good team for the Rebels. I think Ole Miss is really good. Ooh. Like they played care about the game Louisville and beat him, right? They got blown out by Florida on the scoreboard. That game was also pretty close until the kickoff return and the foot like the-- Strip sack. Yeah. Florida outplayed them deserve to win the game. They probably didn't deserve to win by that kind of margin. You have a really good quarterback. You have some different spakers on the defensive line. Seven of the receivers are starting to emerge. I think Ole Miss is a good team. Also, I think they're offensive line played well today too, because as a Missouri front that has looked good recently and did not really do a damp thing, and it wasn't just Trinidad being Trinidad. They weren't really getting damn very much. And Lacey got a little banged up again. I mean, Rintz washer Pete, right? We're just going to assume he's going to be-- He's perpetually dang this year. Yeah. I do not mean this as a criticism of the young man, but feels like he could have an NIL deal with Ace bandage at this point, no free ads, but just like-- Something's always sore. Where's Tommy Copper at? You know, can we get these muscles warm? I think it's one of those things that's not going to heal until you get a long time to rest, and he's just not going to have any time to rest until the season's over. Yeah. Let's see. What else did we get most of the big SEC results then? We'll hit a break. There we go. Kind of do a bigger reset here. See, we got Alabama Tennessee, Georgia, Missouri, Florida. We got them all except for Arkansas and Andy. Guys, I was wondering why I look so red on camera, but when my computer restarted the little sunrise sunset, like night mode, it makes it good on your eyes, you know, like, eliminating the blue light, like I just turned it off, and I looked at each red. What is the SEC tie break, says the tailgate? I'll tell you what, tailgate, come meet us on Monday 11 a.m. Eastern time when we can uncork all those as part of a pun for the review, because right now, we're hot and heavy in the moment. And we are just talking about the football that we saw on the field. And yes, guys are going to ask, do you think that Texas A&M's 41 to nothing win over the Citadel is turning their season around? Brady Hart. I was with my A&M buddy today, five for eight that they're encouraged. All right. Because they had a backup for you guys at home who may not know. I was going to say the most disrespectful thing I could say about Missouri was that Ole Miss did to Missouri, what Missouri did to Texas A&M, and that's not a good sign for Missouri. No. But again, we've got more data than those individual games. But if I was to just hold those two individual games with all the, you know, other information, you would be like, well, that's not good. But I think Missouri will be okay. You're going to have like a seven-way tie break, most likely for this, by the way, between Ole Miss, Bama, Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, all right, Missouri's out now. So who am I missing? Greg Sanky. At LSU. And George is like, I think, still overwhelming that I'm going to go. Greg Sanky, and I know Greg's a huge fan of the Cover 3 podcast. So please reach out and let us know if we're wrong about this one. But if I remember correctly, when the ACC changed its tie breaker procedures, they said, hey, Greg, your tie breaker procedures are very similar to what the ACC had before. Do you have any ideas about changing yours? And he was, in my opinion, I'm editorializing here, a little bit arrogant in saying, like, oh, those aren't problems we worry about. Okay, buddy, Greg, get to learn opponents, conference winning percentage tie breaks, you know, fire up the geocytes because we're going to have to get the TI-83 ready to figure out the SEC and who's going to Atlanta and what very well may be the last year of the SEC championship game. What could be finer than this? Okay. I don't think there's much very well about it. I think it is definitely the last year of the SEC championship game. I have never been mistaken for a newsbreaker, so I'm not trying to do it here. All right. Coming up on the other side, we continue to roll through some of the notable interesting and important results from week seven. We re-rank the top 25 and more. Next. I say something on here that I surely won't regret. Oh, let's go. I'm kind of thinking Illinois has a chance to beat Oregon next week because that game's over because it's seven-nothing now. I mean, probably now Dante Moore is definitely going to be ready to play next week, but just, yeah, it's just if this is the Oregon that shows up in champagne, maybe Illinois can get to a bowl game after all. Let's go. Wow. Colorado's tied it up with Utah. They're about to glee. Thank God. I only took the first half. I knew what I was doing. Getting out. That's right. Getting out while the Gettin's good. That's what Tom Fernelli's doing. Speaking of the big 12, what did we make necessarily of Houston and Oklahoma State? Great game, by the way. Great game. Fun game. So I thought, "Mestemaker played awesome and Oklahoma State's offensive line issues got exposed big time." Houston was all over his ass all day, and I thought he made a bunch of big-time throws, escaped the pocket, ran some, made a bunch of really good throws. Houston's defense, it was just constant pressure, without having to blitz too much. I don't think we thought Oklahoma State's defense was a very good all year. They imported North Texas, right, and think about what North Texas was last year. They were really going to an offense and kind of hot garbage on defense when they played somebody with a pulse, and that kind of looks like what Oklahoma State is right now. Super fun game. I thought Kobe Young came up really clutch for Houston a couple of times. A Mario Thomas too had a good game. Wegman is healthier running than walking. He's limping badly between his snap, and then he's breaking off the corner. But then he's doing a quarterback run to seal the game. Yeah. It's like a. strike thing like is it a heel strike issue, you know, like when you're on your toes, you're okay. I don't know. Um, I thought he, I thought both quarterbacks played really, really well. Just Houston has a, a, a, a, a, a, a better defense than Oklahoma state does based on this game. What a random list of names for a random stat. 300. Oh, how he gets rid of it. I know you trust my graphics department. Connor was spelt wrong. And I'll put it back up. Nobody cares about that. Just put it back up. So 300 plus passing yards, five plus passing touchdowns and 50 rushing yards in an AP top 20 matchup past 10 years. Connor Wegman today Caleb Williams and 2022 hand in hooker and 2022 Joe burrow and McKenzie Milton. So codder, you're either going to have, you're going to be like the number one pick or not. Based on that list. Well, you're definitely going to either be a quarterbacks coach or a number one pick one day. Yeah. No, I thought, I thought, I thought Connor Wegman was, was really good. And that was, you know, that, that's obviously super encouraging because I will admit that there was some reason to have some doubt overall like how good is Houston got pushed and they had a really, really good response. And yes, you're correct. I think in your assessment of Oklahoma State's defense. It's a group that's been leaky, you know, throughout the season. And when they needed to chase the game, they were not able to get the stops. They needed to give the ball back to true mastermaker, even though mastermaker was, as you said, having a having himself a pretty good performance. So 35, 32 is going to be your final right there. The Cougs improved to six and one on the season, three and one in the big 12 as they tried to find themselves in that very, very crowded picture in the big 12 title race along with the team that just beat them as well as Texas tech and Utah. You said Utah is, Utah is currently losing the Colorado 14 to 13 in the third quarter. Baby, this is like the second week in a row that you tell us defense is how to sketch. Just a little alert out there. Like they played Kansas and Kansas mood ball all over him. It couldn't score on the red zone. And yeah. Sunflower showdown. Since you mentioned it, 35, 24, I think was the final there. Wildcats were caught in a little bit of a dog fight, but then we're able to pull out late. I did not see end of this game. I didn't see a single snap. So I was locked in early, but then I had to bail, but what'd you say? I saw a decent portion of the game. The best part of the game was when Avery Johnson broke free for like a 59 yard run and then tripped on the turf and kind of like plant landed on the ball and knocked the air out of him and head lay on the ground for like 10 minutes because he couldn't breathe. So it was just like it was such a mix of oh my god, I tripped and fell. Also, I hurt myself, but I'm going to play it up a little bit just because I am a little embarrassed. That does hurt a lot. That does. But he was laying there for a while. But it was yeah. Like their offensive line looked pretty decent today, which I think is a damning statement about the Kansas defense. Yeah. And I, you know, not that like there's a ton of Kansas football fans out there and that they're a super vocal fan base, but they're kind of reaching the end of the line with Lance, I pulled in that fan base right now. I'm wondering. It's hard to be really, it's hard to be competitive basketball and football. Mm-hmm. I want to be talking about. Dude, I should be to do good football. He's like, you're talking about bro. We're in everything school. Hell baseball too, right? I mean, yeah, I think she called it real serious. The real quick Texas Tech is a top 10 team. 53 to 25. Yo. Yeah, that was done quick. Yeah, that's closer to that somehow 53 to 25 is closer than the game felt. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that thing like I flipped it on. It was already like 21 to nothing tech. It just wouldn't end. Mm-hmm. I'm obliterating them. Um, great. I mean, obviously great win for the Red Raiders. You're 6-0. You're 3-0 in big 12 play. Like, you know, F what the haters say. Just keep winning. You'll find yourself where you want to be. Kutterbole got benched. Okay, I was going to I did not see enough of this like to comment. I was going to like he didn't play much. So bench not hurt. He got benched for keen. That was my understanding of it. I didn't watch. But it's based on what I saw from like beat reporters. It was a pinching. You mentioned also the Lance Leipold frustrations. I was clearly on the wrong end of reading this one. Yeah, this one could be done soon. Bailer. Mm-hmm. Wow. Yeah, I'm not see that coming at all. Yeah, like they were really, I mean, this is a rivalry game. And they were really pushing for this one. And they had like a good turnout for it. And Bailer just completely laid to deck. Wow, that's it. You look defensively. They played okay, but offensively. No, that was bad. That was crazy. And Craig played pretty damn well. Mm-hmm. Like TCU did not run the ball that great. Well, yeah, because the TCU offensive line also has, you know, continued to become something that I think is problematic in sort of all of it, right? Yeah. You know, we go into that opening loss to Carolina. And you're like, oh, they were missing the receiver, blah, blah, blah. And Jane Craig's had got his own performance issues. But overall, that whole offense is just such a struggle. And yet Spavs boys could not get it rolling down hill whatsoever. DJ Lagway. That was shocking. Yeah, just they were just bad today. They looked like they didn't care. All right, which is not good for it. No, not when your coach is on the Aussie. It seemed like they had a good crowd too. They had a great crowd. Like there was probably the best turnout they've had at a home game all year. And that's what they they saw six points. Like they they were like legitimately here like still reasonably alive to make the big 12 championship game before tonight. Not anymore. Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if I don't know if it'll be tomorrow, but it could be. What's there? I'd you're safe with choir. I was checking their just just even for their past the by we, you know, always you look for the by week, right? Yeah, we're on the other side of the by week. We went there by week last week. Yep. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. So they had the by going into this one. And that's the performance they put out. No, boy, no. No, sir. Not whatsoever. Speaking of Maryland on the wrong end of losing to Rutgers. Yeah, they just did little things so so poorly. Just drop balls like penalties, just lack of situational awareness. It looks like a coaching issue. I was asked the unanswerable question actually on Baltimore radio this week. Who would be on the list of candidates? I said, honestly, Vinnie, Bob, I ain't gotten that far yet. You know, but what I would say is we don't need a magical connection to the area. Right? Like that's part of the Mike Loxley sales pitch. That's part of the Malik Washington sales pitch. There's this idea that is those someone tied to the area is going to save the program. But Bob Chesney ain't Los Angeles, right? You know, like you don't necessarily have to have these magical ties to the program to be able to go and make it work. So we'll see what Maryland ends up doing. But I would say to any Maryland fans who are passionate members of the tailgate friends of the Cover 3 podcast, don't try to don't try to overthink this. Just just just go hire someone who can coach the details because you are a big 10 school. You have even if you're not spending at the top of the big 10, you have advantages over the rest of many power five power four conferences. So get someone who can just coach the details because go get Jake Dicker go get Jason Eck go get every go get the names everybody should go after Jason Eck would actually be really interesting. Yes, like if Wisconsin doesn't pull the plug on fickle, you know, then he could probably do something there. That's a market shepherd from Oregon state and see if he'll bring the green and atkinson. Yeah, I'm not a bad one. I was thinking Kevin Decker, the the Memphis OC, but obviously they had like seven turnovers on on Friday. He sure did. Oh, but he's an Northeast guy. I was just like running through my brain of like who's actually if you care about connections to the area at all, but that's all I was saying in this case, I would just say let it go. Just get a competent coach. Yeah, I mean, Jake Dicker ain't got no ties to Winston Salem, North Carolina.
Carolina, right? Or, you know, like there's a lot of examples of that we've seen here where being able to just get everybody locked in on game day is so much more important than it was before, where before so much of the work and bud, you can maybe speak to this. So much of the work was probably done before National Signing Day. - Right. - And that was probably more a bigger deal in terms of what led to wins and losses in the fall. But you've got to be able to, you've got to be able to get your team ready now because the margins are much smaller and now that everything's thinned out a little bit. - You know how I know Georgia lost today. - Ooh. - 'Cause we're talking about coaching candidates for school and there aren't a bunch of Georgia fans in the comments hyping up Mike Bobo because they're not here watching the show because they're sitting at home crying and they're here. - They checked out. - Hopefully they're Modella. - Hope you had Georgia fans. You guys can't show up after a loss? - Come on now. - Chip Kelly's maybe going to be available. - Talk a big game. As soon as they lose a game. - I've held the wheel for a while now and before we get into re-ranking, I want to make sure that we hit everything we want to around the country. - Right, something that was benched. - Yeah. - Great call. - And guess what? Michigan looked better with Tommy Carr. - At least one car had a win tonight. - Tommy Carr leads three touchdown drives. - Mm-hmm. - Yeah, like they didn't look outstanding, but the offense certainly looked a lot smoother with Tommy in there. So I think that that job is going for it. I'm wondering what the big, Rocco looked bad again. A big takeaway here for me, just bigger picture. We talked about arch. Underwood's benched. Are we possibly seeing a scenario now where schools are going to be far more hesitant to give the big money deals to the five stars out of high school? - A school will not be hesitant, but will. - Overall, do you think we're going to see more of like a professional where it's like, now the experience players get in the big money deals and the guys coming out of high school, they're on the major league minimum. They're under arbitration. - And for extra context here for those who weren't aware, demand Williams also benched for all eyes around. - But that's the. - Washington. - Yeah. - But like if you're Washington, you have to pay up, right? 'Cause like you don't have the money to go get a guy of that level if he hits. Like you're kind of paying for the opportunity to have him, you know? Like I thought Miami was doing something really smart with just going out and paying the $7 million, but then they've also started paying for high school. Cubans at the same time, you know? Like you're going to achieve a cost savings in that like sophomore year, right? Like Bama probably has Keelan on a fairly cheap deal, relative to like what the really expensive guys cost in the portal. He's not making six or seven million this year, but like the cost savings is like a one year type thing, you know? - Yeah, I just wonder if they're going to start thinking the ROI and like a lot of the top names, the five star guys at the very top of these classes, and you might start seeing some schools be a little more hesitant. - Oh, well like like Trey Taylor is like the number one this year, right? - Mm-hmm. - Like Nebraska. - Committed to Nebraska. - Nebraska, yeah. - Good kid too, good player. - Like if you're in Nebraska, if that kid hits and he signs with a Ohio state, you have 0.0% chance of ever getting a player like that out of the portal, you know? So if the kid likes you at all, you're going to jump at that chance to pay up because you want to potentially unlock the special. You know? I think they'll keep paying. I'm interested, like I'm sure the details are correct, like Underwood's contract. Like what kind of option do they have in that? If any. - Is there an offset clause for when he signs somewhere else next? - Right, yeah, exactly. - What is the release clause, you know? - Right, I think they'll happily sign it, whatever it is. - What about the. If at one point, Michigan, oh, it was halftime. I was like, at one point, Michigan had zero points and we were wondering if Kyle Whittingham was gonna be the story here. It flips around Kyle Whittingham. Cools things a little bit. Matt Campbell. - But they can't fire Campbell 'cause they gave him a big buyout. - Yeah, I don't think I'm interested in the fire 'cause that doesn't seem realistic, right? I'm not here for the outrage. I think it's more about the conversation around what has been delivered based on the expectations and what is the path moving forward? How to pin state fans wake up on Sunday morning, even though their team is, oh, and forum big 10 play and be like, oh, no, we made a huge mistake. Like, what is the sales pitch here? What is the path forward for the knitting lines? - The sales pitch is this season. - By the average contractor. - No, this offseason, we are going to be able to get out there ahead of time and really put together a roster worthy of being a Penn State football team, unlike we were able to do last year. And we're going to have the financial buy-in and all that kind of stuff. We talked about it and we kind of all felt for a little bit, but when the biggest selling point for a team is the schedule, that's probably a red flag. - Yeah, I would agree. I mean, I think Campbell's a competent coach. I don't know that he's like, we'll see. I don't want to say something stupid here. - He'll probably be okay there. - I do think he could do himself a favor by benching back, though. I think they have to stick with the fans. I think the longer you stick with back, the sooner they're going to or not, a patience. - Well, we talked about this with Ivan on Wednesday. I didn't need to bench Marcel Reed, right? Like, any possible goals you have for the season are done. You need to figure out if Brady Hart can play or not, right? And maybe he's not very good in practice, but maybe he'll show you some stuff in games. Like, okay, like maybe he's just a guy, there's a little better in lights to come on. 'Cause you need to be out, like, you got a couple games like to figure out, and if you're A&M, like you're gonna have the decision to make this obviously, like I was sooner going to transfer that quarterback. 'Cause it's A&M and they have a ton of money, right? Like, you know, Penn State has a fairly highly recruited backup. Like, can we see if that kick and play at all? Like, your season is basically done now. You've lost four games in a row, you know? Right, four in a row? - Mm-hmm. Yeah, it's in four and a big 10-pie. - Yeah, after starting three, you know? Like, I'll give 'em some grace for Tick and Rocco 'cause like, I didn't think he was very good at Iowa State. I thought he was just a guy, like, we knew his name early 'cause he played as a freshman, but I don't think he ever got any better at Iowa State. But they didn't really have a lot of time at Tom's point to put together a class. 'Cause their AD took forever on a coaching search, that they had months and months to do. - Mm-hmm. - They were still, they were all toying with the idea of what the interim, and they were still toying with that idea, going into the end of the year. - Oh, Terry Smith and Kyle's weren't done, by the way, 'cause like, they look like they don't care. - At all. - Mm-hmm. - I mean, anybody can get their ass kicked by Wake Forest. Yeah, but like, the way they're like jogging around the field, bro. Like, this is like, quit factor 10. - I don't think Ron Rivera GM is ready to fire Kyle, alum, Tosh, Lou, Poey, yet. But I haven't checked in with Ron. You guys seen the Ohio Sacramento State score? - 41 zero. - It's 47 to 7 now. - Ohio? - Yeah. - Yeah. - All right, yeah. - Jesus. - Sacramento State paid for them to fly out there and beat their ass. (laughs) - Hey, they could get that stadium built. Everybody's happy. - Speaking of Michigan, their in-state rival gave a fine charge at Northwestern. - Hey, fun ass football game, all right. - Not a pretty game, but yeah, it was a good one. - No. Mill and Voyavitch was shucking it. I mean, it was like, there were so many more yards in explosive plays than there were points in this game. We had multiple blocked field goals. We had red zone turnovers. We, I mean, it was just, I promise you, Northwestern 24 Michigan State 21 does not do this game justice as being a legitimately entertaining tense and fun football game. It truly felt like playing in East Lansing. This was Fitz's big roar, right? You got Northwestern in town. They were dumping the kitchen sink all out there. Anything you could do to generate offense with as pitiful as this Spartans offense has been all year long. Aiden Shows is putting it on the line. I mean, it was a wall. - Michigan State had 300 yards in a big 10 game. - That's what I'm telling you. - 300 guys. - It was a kitchen sink game for the Michigan State offense. - They broke late, but, I mean, like Northwestern had 250 yards in the second half, and then in the fourth quarter, they had 152 of them. I have to say, Michigan State's defense, which was pretty much down to third and fourth stringers everywhere due to injuries played their ass off for the first half of this game. - Again, and that's the thing is, Northwestern did not have a drive of significance to like early fourth quarter. - No, I thought, when I saw their injury report, I saw what they were down to. I thought Northwestern was going to win this game by like 40 points, so that junior varsity defense played.
off in the first half. The offense hit some shots and then yeah, they had a chance to win it, but they had their field goal blocked late and Northwestern then immediately marched right down the field, kicked their own field goal game over. They know Northwestern's what, they're five and one or five and one overall. What are they in the big 10? Yep, two and one in the big 10. Hit lost their second straight game. Daily looked pretty okay for a while and then he didn't. I'm gonna call that dude MGK. Yeah, machine gun. Yeah, that's machine gun Kelly. I don't care what he's telling you. Yeah, that is machine gun Kelly. We tried Holden Gerner and then we went to machine gun Kelly. Yeah, that was the game plan at pit. Boston College big win. I mean, it's like undeniably just a good hard fault win. I thought that that I thought that Mason McKinsey and Boston College in general started being a little bit closer to what Boston College can be at its best, which is a thorn in your ass kind of football team. And they were today. Pit didn't have enough answers 27-21. Pit goes from being five and oh to and pat nor doozy, you know, talking into the camera about rank us, but he ain't sniffing the AP top 25 after these last two. So yeah, I mean they lost their cubie there. It's a sad. I mean, that's the high initial injuries just completely tanked them. Yeah. And like for BC to win that game despite that one red zone interception McKinsey through, which was comical. Just yeah, that just tells you everything you need to know about pit. Tom, you want to talk about a guy turning around the whoopsie daisy right? Clander just through a like throwaway ball literally into the stands of organ. Yeah, it's I just saw it. Bro, that is safe. Look at that. Even six is dampened above afterwards. You think rules that are talking to like don't even think about it. Just chuck that shit as far as you can. Oh my god. Congratulations to the Charlotte 49ers. First win of the whole day gum season. Did they win? Yes. Let's go 3831 at temple in the link. The 49ers, they heard no bell season 8 over 474 yards of offense 7.07 per play. Just marching it down the owls, who'd on these with our pickaxes. Wow. I mean, just proud, just proud to show it for not not giving up on the season right there. How about those heels? It was, did you watch? I did. We were pretty dialed in, you know. That was that was solid. Little scary at the end for a little bit. And then I was like, okay, you know, Carolina looks competent. They do. Like they understand what they are. They're foreign to they. They were able to take a Nate Shepherd plate for those who didn't get a chance to watch. I know that was part of the conversation going into the weekend. The star running back who's among the best running backs in the entire country. And honestly, to my eye, I thought they did a pretty good job against him in the like traditional run-of-play run stuff, but he was great out of the backfield as a passing threat. I thought that Shepherd did a good job of sneaking out for some of those check downs. You're not going to believe this, but Walker Eget ain't exactly tearing anybody up, pushing the ball down the football field. So it was a lot of check downs and having to wrap up, which in a cold and windy and kind of, you know, weird afternoon was always a little bit nervy for the North Carolina defense. But Tar Heel stood tall, you know, I haven't pulled up the advanced analytics box score. I was watching with the famed. So I just, like you said, they know what they are. They were able to get like some Benjamin Hall goes out with an injury early in this game. Jalen McGill gets one ends up being the game winning touchdown. Quick note on Jalen McGill, but I don't know if you remember him out of high school. He's like a three star prospect at a South Carolina Spartanburg area. But as soon as he got into the program, a lot of people started talking about, they're like, hey, this guy's, this guy's, yeah, we got one. I mean, and frankly, like, that is an advantage that North Carolina has had for a very long time. You are the University of North Carolina. If somebody gets overlooked by Georgia or by Clemson or by like any of these other SEC schools that normally poach most of the talent in the area, then guess what? If they do land at North Carolina, they get in the strength program. They start like things start to click for them. Jalen McGill is someone they've been excited about for a long time. The freshman gets the game winning touchdown in a win that snaps a two game winning streak for the Blue Devils, the victory bell coming back to Chapel Hill. Tom, I'm glad that I'm glad you were moved by that because it was definitely something that, you know, going into the game, I felt myself moved. You know, I mentioned to you. I said, I started going to Carolina football games in 1994. I graduated in 2009. There was one loss to Duke in that stretch. I don't like losing to Duke. I don't hold on to a lot of like, you know, die hard, Ryan, die fans. We got jobs to do in North Carolina football. Usually has me turning my attention elsewhere to do my job. But in this case, you know, I was like, Hey, you know, that was a, that was a good rivalry when it seemed to mean a lot. You know, see Xavier Lewis and all American candidate out there running to go grab the bell. Jordan ship who could have gone in the transfer portal, sticking with it. It's cool. You know how I know chip cares? How much? Chip doesn't send us AI memes about other things, but he sent us AI memes after North Carolina beats Duke. Which, which AI meme you sent us with a coach K and Manny on the cart on me. Yeah, like the sad pizza or my part. No, no, no, that cart was real, bud. Like that's a real part. But man was you, man, he was AI died out of there though. Yeah. I replaced Mike Shachevsky's wife Mickey with Manny Diaz. Hey, I thought it was real too for a second. He goes, no, I said, there's no way in hell. That's real. It was hilarious though. Yeah. Yeah, it was a, it was good stuff. All right, elsewhere, Louisville avoided disaster in a game where they went down double digits early at Syracuse. We mentioned UCLA deep in bark. All right. I think it was constant. Might have missed about opportunity here. Yeah. I, yes. Yeah, go ahead. The game was every time like this was not clearly there was so much going on in that window that this game was not my top priority. I had it on in the corner on the top television. And every time I turned up to look at it to see what was going on there, there was an official doing this or doing this or, you know, just calling some penalty. Let's see, there were 18 penalties for 180 yards in this game. So that crew made itself known. And both fan bases from what I could see were really not happy with the officiating crew here. So yeah, it was not a great game. Wisconsin offensively just shout out to UCLA's defense because it's just good. Right. And I can't, I mean, they're just good on defense. Like nobody has fun against this team. Like they, they are very tough to move the ball against. They are physical. They are smart. They don't screw up. They're very rarely out of position. If any of this is kind of starting to sound familiar from a couple of years ago, with another team in a first year head coach, just go ahead and point it out. But like, they're just good. And then offensively, they did enough. Four. That is the fourth percentile passing performance from Wisconsin, according to the game on paper. Five of 15 for 60 with three sex. He's just, I mean, they weren't even trying. I thought both offensive lines got kind of overwhelmed here on most plays. UCLA just found a way to hit some explosives, you know, and like their big plays were much bigger than Wisconsin's picks. I will say when the injury started to pile up more for UCLA, and Wisconsin mounted that drive, I was like, oh, Wisconsin might have something here. And then UCLA responded, which was huge. Yeah. I'm glad that you said it, Tom, because I'm, I'm wary of overdoing any comparisons. But we have said this. They just show up at the right place at the right time. They're just well coached. They just seem to find a way to be in the right places. They're the only undefeated team in the big 10. Who would have thought we'd be saying that on October 18th? That, that game of the end of the year is going to be really interesting. Yeah. Help. Yeah. Who's more likely to make the playoff? UCLA or Texas? UCLA. If you've seen their schedule. Yeah. UCLA is kind of cruising. I mean, their offense is bad enough. No, UCLA reaching 10 and 2 is far more likely than Texas landing the plane at nine and three. Yeah. I mean, like from here on out, they've got Michigan State and Nevada at Minnesota, Illinois at Michigan, USC. I mean, they are really taking the Indian of 2024 path. Their dogs, what? Twice more. And that Illinois game is in LA on a Friday night. So Illinois is going to be on a short week traveling across the country. And Illinois can't stop the run. And that's going to be tough. Yeah.
You know what though, I'll give some credit here to another big 10 team. Organ's defense is still playing their ass off. Like this offense is, who's organs play collar on offense next year? I think. Sure as hell. We're recall. You drew marriageer. No. Not my favorite organ combination on uniforms. Well, hey, before we start, before we start closing this out with live commentary, let me just. It's going to be a long segment when you do here, by the way. It's breaking. It's going to be fun. Can I get one thing in first, then? Yes. James Madison had a big win tonight against Georgia State. I feel like they are clearly one of the front runners. I really, really, really want Oregon State to get to play off it. I want Oregon State to win the pack 12. I want Oregon State to get the bid, because like, and it's no disrespect to James Madison. It's no disrespect to Boise State. I just, I look at all these G 16s, and I don't think any of them really have a defense good enough that is, you can look at and say they've got a shot to go on the road and you know, stop one of the, whatever team they're going to end up facing. But at least this Oregon State offense has a chance to make somebody miserable and make something happen. So for the sake of a possible upset, for the sake of an entertaining game, I really hope Oregon State makes a playoff over early other G 6s, because I want Tom to be annoyed that he can't just watch Packers Bears in peace this year, like he could last year, right? Yes. Like, can we get the game to the third quarter? You know? So we got no disrespect to James Madison or Boise. It's just, I don't think they're equipped on offense to pose a major problem. But clearly this scheme and the combination of at-consuming degree are causing problems for people. I would love for all the shoe gays, J.M.U. fans to tell me exactly how Camden Coleman and JC Evans are going to pick apart a college football playoff team. You know, it's, I like J.M.U. too. I like him too. I love it. I love to see him in a bowl game. But it's, I don't think they'll score many points against a playoff defense right now. Is Kyle coming in? I don't know, is he? I don't know. Before, again, again, before we get to live live commentary of action going on, re-ranking the top 25 season long is sponsored by Madelo, college football season is Madelo season. The fight songs, the fan quakes, the rivalry trophies. They're all made better with an ice-cold Madelo in your hand. It's not just game day, it's tradition. And those who keep college football traditions alive deserve a Madelo. Madelo is the official beer sponsor of the college football playoff. Well, when you've got all of these losses for top teams, and when you have yet another week of the number one spot up for grabs, the debate that I had to endure myself, and now I'll bring my best guest to you, who ends up taking the number one spot. I think it'll probably be Miami. I don't expect to. I won't be why you. I think BYU is a very good argument for deserving it more. Right. The way people slot up, Miami will be number one. If BYU had won the game and regulate, not BYU, excuse me. If Miami had won the game in regulation by 10, I might have felt differently. They did not even need to cover the 20 point spread. I think that there will be, I think there will be a ton of first place events for Miami. I do think that BYU on the backs of beating Notre Dame has a better win, an undefeated record, and just kind of the theatrics in the stage. I mean, those two games were side by side, and I think it might be difficult for voters to slot Miami ahead of BYU given the opponents that they played in the way those two games played out. I'd be happy to see it. I just don't think that's what's going to happen. I can also see it being Ohio State. I cannot do that. No. No, I think that's more, but I think that's where you sit. They crushed Iowa on the road, you got a one point loss where you covered at Texas, right, and then you go and beat, and you end in an huge win streak on the road and survive your cubie get hurt. I bet you they'll get a decent number of votes for number one. But they'd have a loss and there's an undefeated Miami in a BYU team that just beat Notre Dame. That BYU just beat Notre Dame and they've got a, I mean, what they have that UCLA doesn't is also 11 wins last season. You know, there's just some, there's some credit that is built up within the AP voter community, but they're going to feel a little bit more confident putting that number beside that name because it's a team that's been up inside the top spots of the rankings for a while. So you don't feel like you have to go out on that much of a limb on this one. So it's BYU or Miami, right? I understand your Ohio state deserving. I just think for the purposes of projecting what AP voters are going to do, ain't no way that Ohio state is going to land in the consensus ahead of both BYU and Miami. That's probably fair. But for those of us at home, don't understand, like, what was the voting gap like between Miami and BYU entering the day? Oh, it was big. It was Miami. It was solo third place at 1,594 BYU down at 1,237 from a tearing perspective. BYU was closer to that Alabama Texas range, even though those teams had a loss and BYU did not. I think that what you see in terms of the way that things are getting reshuffled is that Georgia losing, Notre Dame losing, Indiana losing, Alabama losing, Texas losing. I've basically just listed all the teams between BYU and the top of the rankings. Right. Okay. So you've been gravitated all the way up in a win, move up, lose, move down, brain mindset, which Tom Frennelli, I'm with you, Tom, has criticized when we do a poll assassin on Mondays that just being stuck in win, move up, lose, move down mentality, probably ignores the realities of college football as it is. If you truly started from scratch and just started with a brand new one through 25 every single week, that just we know does not happen. But the losses for all of the teams basically between BYU and the very top of the rankings or at least being up there with Ohio State and Miami, that's where I'm going to say BYU's lost column being a zero and the win coming against the team that previously, by the way, was number two in the country with the first place vote. That's going to get a lot of quality, a lot of quality value from the AP voters. May I ask you a question, sir? Of course. Why do you have Florida going from unranked to 18th? It just got that way. So I slotted them with the Texas win, Texas obviously drops, but they're not moving ahead of Missouri. And then you've got these teams that are off, that kind of create a little bit of a log jam where you've got, or not off, but BYU State was off, USC was off, Iowa was off, SMU and Northwestern won, but not really an overwhelming or impressive fashion necessarily. So they're just kind of stuck in that range of the rankings. It could get, that was my best guess, but I could see this being based on very wild, like a wild disparity of where the votes go. That's sort of what ended up happening when you try to like actually write them out one through 25. Well, I don't know, that feels like an extreme kind of reentry to me, but we'll see, they had the poll has been a little bit more reactionary, but they were also 16 a week ago. Yeah, I know. That's what I'm saying. The pollsters have been more reactionary this year, so maybe we'll see that, but I do want to shout out all this teams you mentioned that were smart enough to take the week off. It's a good week to have a buy. Great. Great. Congratulations to USC. Congratulations, Iowa. Congratulations to Boise State. Good work, having your buy during week seven, the absolute blood letting week across all of across all of college football. I've got Alabama very much bolstered by their head to head when it gets Kentucky, which obviously looks much better now after Kentucky's win against Oklahoma, so that's going to provide a nice little cushion for the Crimson Tides, predicted fall after the loss in the rivalry game to Tennessee. I tell you what, when I turn to this indistricer, and I do, as always, after the show is over, I go do one more edit reshuffling and update before the overnight gets posted to cbsports.com. I had as a placeholder winner of Oregon, Nebraska, but if that game continues to be as ugly as it is, we might be, we might be bringing Mississippi State back into the fold, or at least entertaining the idea of. Here's our last question.
Arizona. Arizona. I Arizona was off. You know, yeah. I think if I you, Jay, you just on the base of being undefeated, I think you need to have Arizona ranked if you want to back up your BYU one claim. Yeah, but that's, I'm not a selection committee and neither are any of the voters. Like that's honestly one of the things that's great about an AP top 25 poll is that with 68 69 70 voters. No one is actually trying to reverse engineer rankings. That's fair. Yeah. I'm a little surprised you jumped Florida over LSU. Given the two teams LSU lost to, you know, like tech you went on the road and won against Oklahoma. Not that we use any good, but like, you know, it's still a win. And then obviously lost the old mess who pummeled Missouri. Right. Texas has a win against Ohio State. Let them know Dicks and Tennessee chip. These are garbage rankings. I mean, listen, why do you hate wake forest? Does they wait listed me? Are they punting? It's kind of out of party again on fourth down. I really think you should punt this ball. It's, it's at the minus 36. It's fourth and a short one. There's 901 left. You got two time out. Yeah. Okay. Like, you tell us deep. This is not very good. Like, I don't know. Deon loves punting. So they pointed at their at the. Well, listen, speaking of, and one thing the tailgate is taking notice of Utah's position is up for grabs very clearly. Right. The one through to the one through 25. You just saw on your screen and the one through 25. That was just reference for those listening on the audio included Utah in a way that that might need to be adjusted in a in a very significant manner. These are our projections for how the AP voters will fill out their ballots tomorrow for the reset AP top 25 rankings, which will come out 2 p.m. on Sunday. You mentioned that you don't finish these until after the show. Like you go and do another draft are like the AP voters waiting up for you to finish. I don't know. So they get their marching orders. That's, that's, that's between, that's between them and whoever they have to answer to. But I, it's for for me, for sure, wink, wink, Bob's, your uncle got it for me. It's Tom Fonelli, Bud Elliott, Ryan Striker and Jack Crosby. It's about all of this. I just got to get straight with all y'all. And then that then my head hits the pillow. I don't worry about any. And then there's to best of my knowledge. There's no AP voters among that crew, right? Striker, you a secret AP voter. I can't confirm where's the night. I love to hear it. Okay. And that was the reranking the top 25 sponsored by Madelo while the rankings may change week to week. Madelo will always be on the top of our list as the perfect companion for a college football Saturday. Remember college football season is Madelo season. Okay. What else? Let me go through. I think, I think that's it. What do we miss? You and OV lost at Air Force. I didn't watch it. But that was something that no bottom allowing to kick six was, was pretty deflating. Like they played, they played kind of evenly with, yeah, not, not a wise choice in my opinion to kick that field goal. I, I just love that it was before half time, but I still got to have this for those who are watching along on YouTube. I was at YouTube.com's Let's cover three. And the boys are going to win the football game. Yeah, I didn't get to have the full experience right there. It, I just wish I was in New York for this because if you're doing half times for this for CVS, like the control room, be like, we, we got to change this up. Like, like, like, new sheet, new sheet. Yeah, yeah. Despite, we're going to print new rundowns. Yeah. Oh, they're flying off. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Shot sheets. Yeah, a lot, a lot more to get to 41 zero, by the way, wake cow. Maybe we do need to move wake up. New Mexico's currently down to Hawaii. Arkansas. I got their first conference win in two years. Hell yeah. Came to expense for boy, though. Yeah. Air Force, by the way, no passing yards in that win. I think we. Oh, no, Liam Sarkas out. Whatever. Will we do? Just run ever pass again. Yeah. We, I think we do have our first season win total win, by the way, this week. Was it Penn stayed under eight and a half? Oh, and I think my Kentucky low, no, my Kentucky lost last week, I think. And JKS is in the game. Oh my gosh, I gotta get to that. JKS plan. That's what John Raimi said. Yeah, my Kentucky lost last week, but yes, now Penn State is also an official loss or win. Bud wins in a fight with some ass or jerk's name, chip and daddy on 10 state. Yeah. Hey, listen, Matt, I will always end up losing after talking to a head coach who brings the intensity that Matt Campbell brought to our interview. You know, sometimes I catch these guys off guard, right? They don't really know what to do with me. Another win total one, too. Who got Notre Dame under 11 and a half, Daniel canal. Oh, he all wear the Notre Dame fans going to be on Monday when Danny celebrating that one, calling him a hater when he took it. Well, well, well, looks like he just knows ball. Hey, wake over is about the cash. Yeah, it is. Let's go. Hey, this is this is how the deakes get back to Charlotte. All right. That I just keep stacking good days. That's how you get it done. All right. We ain't no cash yet. Huh? No, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm not cash yet. No. Okay. The sex is sex that under cash yet or they just haven't played enough games. I haven't played enough games yet. It's a low low total. Do y'all watch any SMU UVA? Not a minute. I think I've diagnosed SMU. I think they're a big team and that is complimentary and derogatory. Like they play up into big games? No, they're a bit like heavy. They throw to their big ass inside receivers. They like have big physical running backs. They have a defensive line that can really lean on you. But like, I mean, they're not blitzing it, you know, even though they've read Lashley team and even though they can play with Tempo and they've got a few players that can be kind of, you know, they got some prize on defense for real. Yeah. Like, yeah. They're their size. Is it 90? Is it 90 inside that just absolutely wrecked shop? Yeah. I mean, they had Virginia and real problems. But then when they would get the ball, they also weren't able to just blow and Cam Robinson, Virginia's back seven. I thought did a good job of swarming to the ball. But that's the thing is when you're not looking like you're able to run past Virginia's defense, compliments to Virginia. But it's just you're a big team. You're not the, the mind might think Rhett Lashley, SMU, like we're spreading this thing out. We're playing fast. We're just going to be able to blitz you. They can run it. They can run the football, but it's just yeah, 2013 was the final there. And I think that if they're going to keep the March going and try to climb their way back into the ACC title race, it'll be more games probably a little bit closer to that kind of score. SMU wake is to go to Charlotte. I mean, it's the ACC. You never say never, you know. Yeah, but like who else is even alive in this race at this point? Well, I would say it's probably more than anything for the head-to-head swing that you would be getting. I guess Louisville is still technically alive. I think everybody else is pretty dead based on head-to-heads. I mean, all SMU, all SME, all SME comes in so alive. I guess, but like think about who they still can play. C-A-C-C. Yeah. You never know. I mean, if Pitt totally falls apart, but Virginia Tech wins out, they don't have to worry about that head-to-head. They don't have to count. Oh, yeah. Tough scenes. It's definitely out, it's just definitely out. I haven't done any of these conference title races yet. It's sort of usually saved that as an a pun further review thought. Put it on the budget. Conference title race reset. It's actually pretty good. No, no, no. Not so too early. We got to wait till like, what, November? No, no, we'll do it for the podcast. I was just remembering when I had to do that big post for CBS.com back in like 2014. And then I'd get, and then I'd get all the tie-breakers wrong and everyone would yell at me. That was a lot harder pre-AI. Like that was real work. Now it's like you can load up the rules, you know, like it's, it's, yeah. Yeah, but not me. I was, I was out here. No, right. Yeah. A log Patterson. A log Patterson was flipping through. Got a little punch cards. Yeah, flipping through me and I did by laws, you know, trying to figure this out.
out. And then I'll, and then I get all these emails because I'd be like, Oh, and so and so's out of the race. They're like, no, they're not your idiot. Yep. Okay. We are going to be back with you on Monday 11 a.m. Eastern time to be able to look at these conference title races at the stage for the week ahead and clean up all the last little bits that we did not hit here on Saturday night.
