Week 7 Breakdown: AP Poll Reaction, Updated CFP Predictions & MORE | Upon Further Review
1h 20m 4s
The AP Top 25 rankings reveal a tight top tier, with Miami Hurricanes at No. 1, BYU second, and Ohio State third, reflecting both performance and resume debates. Analysts question the fairness of penalizing teams with early losses, noting that undefeated teams like UCLA and Utah are receiving significant credit despite weaker schedules. The playoff projection shows Georgia as a dominant force, with key matchups like Ohio State vs. Indiana and Texas Tech vs. BYU, creating a highly open field. Auburn’s dramatic comeback against Georgia, marked by resilience and key performances from Alex Goulish and Byron Brown, earns them the Pop Tarts Bowl Crazy Good Team of the Week. Meanwhile, concerns grow over Texas quarterback Arch Manning’s decision-making and route reading, prompting calls for coaching intervention. On the officiating front, a controversial final-second call in the Notre Dame-BYU game—where officials missed a potential second on the clock—has prompted a full review by the Big 12, highlighting the need for better end-of-game clock management. The episode also emphasizes how scheduling, resilience, and execution define success, with Tennessee’s dominant win over Alabama showcasing a disciplined run game and defensive pressure. These elements underscore the growing complexity of college football rankings, playoff projections, and on-field execution.

Let's go Aggies, pick yourself up. It's Bootstrap's Monday. We got a lot to get to. We, of course, they're going to be looking at the changes at the A.P. Top 25 poll, where we have a new number one. Congratulations, to Mario Christopher Ball and the Miami Hurricanes. Taken over that top spot. We've got an updated college football playoff projection. From Bud, we will be celebrating the Pop Tarts Bowl, Crazy Good team of the week in coordination with the Football Riders Association of America. Plus, as always, on a Monday, we're going under the hood for a pun further review and the UFRs are busting at the seams. So, I'm not going to waste any more time. Let's jump straight into it, looking at the changes and. - Bowl of Saisin. - That's right, we mentioned it. New number one at the top of the rankings. It is the Miami Hurricanes. They did finish with 1,697 voting points. They got 40 first place votes. BYU checks in at number two, 1,675 voting points. Ohio State at number three, nine first place votes, 1,649 voting points, which is to say, for those of you who don't want to run quick math here, of the entire population of AP voters, the margins between Miami and BYU and BYU to Ohio State are maybe 18 ballots or so. I mean, a spot or two, just in there. So, Miami, BYU, Ohio State, according to the AP Top 25 poll, that is your top tier. Again, 41 first place votes for the U, they get the top spot, 21st place votes for BYU, nine first place votes for Ohio State. And then there's a big drop off. I know that three and four are right beside each other and the graphic on the screen on youtube.com/cover3, but from a perspective of the AP voters, big drop off, then Notre Dame, Georgia, Indiana, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, line, and by the way, one first place vote for Texas Tech, okay. Okay. - We'll get to that in a little bit. - And then a big drop off after number eight. So while these are ordinarily like one through 10, it's really, as I see it, a top three, then four, five, six, seven, eight, and then another drop down all the way through 10 to see at 11, we can nitpick the order. Danny, would you have any big, at top 11 spots as I just laid them out, any surprises or a reaction to the way that the AP reset the top 25 after a chaotic week seven? - I just feel like the theme for me is always gonna be, why do we give so much credit for good losses? Again, there's still a lot of time left. You could let them earn them back, especially when you don't really have a good win in the case of Notre Dame. Like when you stack their resume against up some of the other one-law's teams, I have a hard time with them still being up there at four. Georgia does have the win over Alabama, so I don't have as much of a problem, but why can't we let them earn their way back up there? And I still think UCLA is just battling the perception problem of being somebody that nobody saw starting from behind and they keep winning, they'll get there, but they just do not get the luxury of being a blue blood that came in as a top 10 team, or else they'd probably be way closer to Miami and BYU. So yeah, those were kind of the couple of things. Miami or BYU, I'd probably have BYU number one. I think they have a better resume than Miami, but I get it. So I don't have any problem there. - Yeah, I think if you look at who's played better from start to finish all season, you'd put Miami number one. If it's just performance based, if you're looking resume based, I think BYU is your number one. - If you're looking resume based, is there an Ohio State argument? - No. - Yeah. Do you want me to get, do we want to start there, but you have any thoughts? - Well, there's a-- - Oh, mute button number one, again. - Early. - Put it up there as number one team in your heart. - That's like, I used to like tell my left tackle. He'd always be like, oh, he'd forget the snap count. Like I had to tell him so many times. Like on the first drive of the game, I have to tell you already, like, come on, it's on two. I told you it's on two. That's when it's a quibble of blood in the first five minutes. - Oh, my God. I think there's an argument for Ohio State. I don't think it's the winning argument. You know, I try to bring it up on Saturday night just to make a point of it. But I, you know, I, if Texas had beaten Florida, then I think Ohio State is a real argument, you know? But they didn't. So like, I think that performance there looks a little bit worse in light of Texas losing to Florida. - Yeah, the, the following nine people are all Doltz, Bob Asmison, Brian Howell, Dave Preston, Ian Cress, John Wilner, Peanity, Sarah Hughes, Ty Hildenbrand. They're letting podcasters vote in this thing. Now, look at that. What the hell? And they're doing a horrible job. - Is it the associated podcasters, Bull? - I don't know, apparently. And then, of course, the one man who could make Luke Fey, he looked like a giant Ralph Russo. They are the nine people who had Ohio State at number one. Because, I guess, if your thought is, hey, why put an undefeated team with a top five win at number one when we could put a team with a loss to a Texas team that's lost two in a row at number one instead? - There's such a, there's no argument for it. Like Bud said, you can argue it, but it's a losing argument. - But I, but I'm with totally with you. But there's like this push to be, well, you can't penalize for the loss and it was a run on conference. I've got going to reward scheduling, which I, and there's also the temptation where you don't want to just do standings and it's just undefeated teams. But it still bothers me that you would try to get a little too cute with it, not give credit to Miami and BYU for what they've done. - Do you want to hear the explanation from Wilner? - Sure. - Okay, did you, all right, he said, I have Ohio State number one this week, mostly due to the strength of the road schedule, Texas, Indiana, Iowa, and two top 25 road wins, Iowa and Indiana. Nobody else has that BYU's best wins. Notre-Dame and Arizona are at home, and Miami has one quality win. Send your outrage this way. I'll do our friend, Johnna, that's at Wilner Hotline on Twitter. If he's going to invite it, I might as well let you know where to go. Hey, you know what? - Top five wins only count on the road. If you win him at home, if you beat a top five team at home, it's not really anything they did care about. - His argument was strength of the road schedule. So that's what it is. - Only road games count and John's ballot. - What about the BYU side of it? Is BYU a losing argument? Or do you think that's that 40, 20 splits, a fair read of a BYU team that has a better high end when Miami team that in performance has looked more impressive? - I will listen to both of those arguments. I side more towards BYU just because of that win. But if you want to argue that, hey, Miami might not have the resume that BYU has as far as their best win, but they have pretty much looked dominant in every game except for the Florida State game this week. Then I'm going to be like, yeah, no, that's perfectly defensible. - Notre Dame, Georgian, Indiana. This also, I was working on the updated CBS Sports 138 this morning, similar reaction from our experts in the voting body there. Not a heavy fall after taking your first loss of the season. I've got a thought here, but I'm curious what your sort of read is on not too much punishment when there are an undefeated Texas Tech, undefeated UCLA, undefeated Utah that are all sitting there behind those squats. How did you do it, I guess Tom? I know you've got a ballot as well or how would you do it? What's the read here? - What was that? - Georgia, Indiana, and Notre Dame all just took their first loss of the season. - I'm probably putting a head of Texas Tech UCLA and Utah, which all remain undefeated. - Yeah, I don't have as bad of a problem with their big of a problem with that as I do with putting Ohio State ahead of BYU or Miami. I just, Georgia, they lost the game in that counts, but if you look at all the numbers, they dominated that game. They just shot themselves in the foot far too many times and cost them. Notre Dame lost on the road to a top five team or top 10 team that is now number two in the poll. Indiana lost to Ohio State in a four point game in which they would have won if their receiver had kept his foot in bounds. So I don't have a ton of problems with that. Like, philosophically, I think you put the undefeated teams ahead of them on your ballot, but I'm not gonna sit there and get upset with anybody for putting it the way they had it. - So if you look at UCLA's schedule, right? I mean, Purdue looks worse now. Cal looks worse now. Maryland looks worse now. And comparatively, like, what did Notre Dame beat?
Wisconsin by, on a neutral site. 1840. Oh, okay. Or 28, 28. Yeah. So like four scores and that was a neutral UCLA beat them by 10 at home. So I think there's a very fair case for putting the Irish over UCLA. And you can recognize what UCLA has done. You know, I'll, I'll be it against, you know, kind of an easy schedule right now. And they have more opportunities to, you know, play bigger teams down the stretch. If they keep winning these, then they're going to keep rising up. But I, I think Notre Dame's resume right now is more impressive than UCLA's. And I think the quality of play is more impressive than UCLA's. Yeah, I'm going to pull hand. We hadn't heard this one yet this year. I'm going to go eye test on this one. I don't care if it's lazy. Yeah. Yeah, you're like, yeah, we're going to take them out of the top spot. But whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, we're going to put them behind who? We're going to put that we're going to put them behind who? So I, I understand why that happened. It's, we, that area of college football is all of these teams that have really been great stories. And we're kind of waiting to see what happens when they start get fake playing games like Ohio State and Indiana played, right? And playing opponents like Ohio State and Indiana played. So I understand why they ended up doing that. Anything else? Tom, do you have any ballot specific? Um, yeah, spotlights. Oh, okay. I've got, we've got a rage beta in, in the AP body. Chris Murray is the, he's the man who put Texas tech at number one. And we were, we were just talking about like, you know, the Miami BYU and Ohio State of it all. There are what seven undefeated teams out of all seven. If you eliminate James Madison from the equation. So the other six, the powerful ones. Is there a team that deserves to be the number one team in the country of those teams less than Texas tech? How is that the one that you put it? Uh, you talk, you talk, okay. Yeah, you could put that, yeah, Texas, if somebody, if you at least tech be Houston, Utah is beating nobody. Yeah. So when you talk to wax, Arkansas, which everybody else has done. What, and especially coming out of playing with your food in the second half against Colorado, right? And getting the ball moved on you a lot by Kansas. But so we're going to like, it's, it doesn't end there, though. Like again, this, like, I think Chris listens to the show and Chris wanted to be mentioned on the show because this is a pure rage made ballot than Nevada guy. Yeah. Okay. So I like him, but to, I'm not, I don't have anything against him, but his ballot was terrible. Is BYU's two Miami's three Ohio State for Georgia, UCLA, Ole Miss, Utah, Tennessee. Then he's got Kentucky at 10. So he has Kentucky, which lost by like 20 to Alabama ahead of Indiana, whose only loss is a four point home loss to Ohio State. He's got Notre Dame at 12, whose only loss is a, what three point road loss to BYU. Who he has number two. And then he's got Florida at 14 ahead of like Texas at 16. He's got Alabama. So there are striker, I sent you this because this was funny to me. Like there are seven SEC teams with two losses, right? And there are many as you can see in the graphic on the show right now. A lot of two lost teams in the country by conference. The only five two lost teams to be in the top 25 this week are five of the seven SEC teams. And Chris made sure to get six of them on his ballot. Whereas they think the only one he left to hold on one, two, three, four, five, six. No, sorry, he's got all seven on his ballot. So yeah, just a, just a very rage baited because if you start looking, I'm okay with that part. The SEC kicked everybody else's ass out of conference, right? Like and then they then they're beating themselves up. Like I thought last year a lot of their claims were a joke this year. I mean, like the big 10 has been very disappointing up and down. You know, like I still think that the top teams are really good. But like you have a lot of really disappointing teams of the big 10, like the big 12 is not the SEC and the ACC is certainly not. So I'm, I'm fine with that. Like if you go out and you crush everybody else in the non-conference, I'm cool with it. That's, that's not my problem. I'm like I said, he's rage baiting with his ballot. Like clearly he's trying to piss a bunch of people off because again, how, what's your argument for having Kentucky 10th and Indiana 11th? Well, you probably say Indiana has lost their only game against a good team. You don't think Nebraska's worth a damn. Well, what does the Texas A&M win me? What's the, what's, yeah, what, what does beating Texas A&M do? What does beating South Carolina add the LSU win, which they do, they also have their losses. They also have the 28 point loss to Alabama. Yeah, so they played a team, they played a team of the caliber of Ohio State, just like in the end did. But instead of losing by four, they lost by 28. That's fair. Yeah, I don't think they should be ahead of Indiana. Isaac great call in the tailgate, rage baiting worked. Chris Murray did no shout out to shout out to Chris. He got what he wanted because I was just going through this ballot and was like, my God, this is a masterpiece. Yeah, I agree with your argument here then Tom. I think the ordering of them is suspect. I do think it's fair to put all those two lost teams in. Yep. And would you have Alabama behind Texas right now? I mean, common opponent is Tennessee, right? Tennessee smoked Alabama, you both played them in Newland and Texas beat them. Okay. I mean, Bammett didn't play a real non-conference game like Texas did. Yeah, I think I would have Texas ahead. That's fine. We can tuckies like strength of record, strength of schedules being incredibly boosted by preseason expectations of A&M and Oklahoma. Let's see, their strength of record is second according to right. That's what blows me away is that I think they're still getting a ton of credit for the Oklahoma and A&M, you know, playoff teams last year, you know, that they were there and LSU's preseason expectations. And LSU still might be a great win, you know, when it's all said and done. Yeah, I mean, LSU has what they've crushed Clemson in a way nobody else has. They have lost by one score on the road against Kentucky and Ole Miss who are pretty serious playoff contenders than they turned around and then they spoke Mississippi State like it should. Right? Like I think she's good. I think Kentucky has a lot of good wins but no great wins. Right. So yeah, but like A&M's down, but they're not like a non top 40 type team, you know, power rating wise. Yeah. Yeah. Like Texas, where is Texas A&M and FPI? Yeah, they're still at 20th and the FPI. Yeah, to me, that's too high with that with that offensive situation. But I can't credibly argue that they're like 50, which is in Kentucky's 26th, by the way, an FPI anything else? Yeah, just one little hypothetical. I just want to know what your guys thoughts are because this is on brand with stuff we've discussed on the show plenty of times because overall in the final poll, shocker of all shocker, the Missouri Tigers are still ranked and I'm not saying they don't deserve to be. So don't jump down my throat, but Missouri is at 22. Mississippi State is completely unranked. And I think personally, this is a kind of another example of preseason expectations, completely clouding how people vote even halfway through the season. Because if you look at Missouri, Mississippi State, Mississippi State has the head to head and win over Mizzou. Mizzou resume wise has a better win than any Mississippi State has to this point. Because, you know, Mississippi State's best win is Mizzou and Mizzou's best win is Florida. Although if you want to argue that, you know, Missouri is a better win than Florida. I think there's an argument, but I think the one thing that gets left out is Mississippi State lost this weekend to an LSU team that is still clearly respected by the voters, but they didn't have their starting quarterback where when you look at Mizzou, they got their ass kicked by Ole Miss. So one of them stays in the poll. One of them drops out entirely after both get their ass is kicked. And what's the difference? One was in the poll to start. One not supposed to be there at all. Agreed. I think although working through this, Missouri killing Florida looks better now that Florida went on the road to one of Texas. Agreed, but they also lost to the Mississippi State team that nobody thinks is good anymore. So they're still ranked, but Mississippi State's not because I think the biggest thing, well, if Mississippi State had started the season ranked 24th, I bet you they're still ranked right now. Probably. Yeah, I think that a voter or if you are asked to rank teams, I would hope that your conviction on the quality of a team is not going to be swayed too much by results of other teams happening. You are factually correct that an overall strength, the schedule rating is changed by what happens, but the team that Florida put out when they got absolutely worked by Missouri had a different quarterback, you know, it just lots of things happen. I think that your confidence in who Missouri is should be your confidence in who Missouri is based on their body of work. And if you want, I don't know, that's just sort of my own thought is that if you're splitting hairs, I understand adjusting an overall view of what they have done and how it looks differently, but teams are also so different throughout a season that if the team you beat or lost to in week two, wins or loses in week seven, that doesn't change my opinion personally of the quality of what that team is as we're trying to rank them heading into week eight. Does that make sense, you know, all right, any we are all good there. But you've been there, you guys, you tailgate, y'all don't know, you don't know what it's been like in these bylaws. All right, like, like even even the budbot can barely handle how many tokens we have, we got a token max all the way.
way to 11 on this one, to be able to figure out all the different computations and permutations required to try and project this 12 team college football playoff, but you've been in the lab. But basically since the conclusion of Saturday night's reaction show around 2 a.m., you do have for us a new updated college football playoff projection. Let's take a look at it. We do. I think everybody will be really happy with this. So I have Georgia running the table from here on out, right? So they win the SEC at 12 and 1, they get the one seat. I have Ohio State losing one game coming back, beating Indiana in the big 10 championship game, all right? So they get the two, Indiana gets four. I have Notre Dame beating Miami in South Bend and running the table. So they finish 11 and one and get the three seed Miami at 11 and two, or sorry, at Miami at 12 and 1, gets the five seed Notre Dame, obviously gets the head to head Miami, no real quality wins. So Miami ends up at the five. Then I have Alabama at six, so I have Alabama, you know, winning out from here with the exception of course, losing to Georgia there in the SEC championship game. Then Texas Tech winning the big 12 at 12 and 1, so they get the seven. I have them beating BYU, BYU finishing 11 and two, so they actually still get a home game here hosting number nine UCLA. And then of course, I have Ole Miss at number 10 going to Lubbock, so that could be a pretty interesting game. And then we have Texas heading to Tuscaloosa, which is actually not a matchup that happened this year. So it's an SEC on SEC, but it's not one that we've already seen before. Miami gets the host Boise. So a lot of pretty interesting matchups here for sure. There's like no scenario that's likely, guys, this is like really. Everything's at 17% when you're spitting out all the different possibilities. I mean, I'm telling you man, like this is awesome in how wide open it is, right? I mean there's like 20 teams, maybe 25 teams you can legitimately still make a case or in. And if you want to stretch it, which you probably should this year, you can get to like 30. Question. So BYU, you've got losing to Utah and then Texas Tech. Correct. Who's Utah losing to them? They're not in the Big 12 championship. Houston and somebody else. So like at Arizona, at UCU, okay, cool. Yeah. Man, TCU's just dragging everybody into hell right now. They are, man. They said they're like, hey, hey, come on down. I know. They're defense has been great all years. They're all right. It's been fun. We're on a little more. Yeah. Right. But it's, I mean, it's it's very funny to consider. So we get to make an inflict the rest of the way, you know? We get 2, 9 and 3 SC teams, right? Ole Miss Texas. And I think that's probably a good thing if you want to have better future scheduling. Because both those teams went out and scheduled a real non-conference game. How are we feeling about Boise State? We have mentioned affectionately the chances that Oregon State might be able to pop up and make an appearance, maybe go out there and win the Pac-12. They'll have a chance to be able to prove themselves on the field, certainly. What's your eye tell you about? Because there's the emotions of House Awesome, Braden Atkinson, Jesse Ligree, Jamarcus Shepherd, the story of it is awesome. But there still is the logistical, are they going to be able to go and win this? How are we feeling about Boise State being able to grab that 12 spot? I mean, they're not going to be massively favored over Oregon State, but if they get that win, like I think beating Oregon State is so much better than anything, Jam, you would have if Jam, you goes undefeated. Yeah. And that game isn't Boise. I know. Yeah. One shot at glory, you're just have to go to the Smarth Turf and be able to beat a program that is just used to handling business. Right. And then yeah, the other thing Boise has going for it is it does have the win over Memphis, although Memphis, you know, that loss they had on Friday night hurts them, but they also had the close loss to Oregon. So it's like, when you look at the overall resume, I do think if Boise State wins the Pac-12, they're very likely going to give it over the Sun Belt Champ, even if the Sun Belt Champ's undefeated. Yeah, we just all sleepin' on the American eventual champ, UTSA. Yeah. Yeah. They play Texas. All right. Yeah, but I think I think JMU would get in ahead of UTSA. Really? Yeah. If it's undefeated JMU, it's like Pac-12 champ, undefeated JMU. And then I think we start to open the conversation up to whoever emerges on top of the much love to them, but the scrap metal pile, that is the American athletic conference. All right. Okay. So this is actually weird. Do you know who they're actually pretty likely to play in the American Championship game? North Texas. North Texas. Yeah. I mean, in a rematch. Mm-hmm. But would you give North Texas a decent chance, one game, first Saturday in December, to be able to go and beat them? I'd give a lot of these teams against, I mean, I'm just sayin' if they would have to win out first, they've had a couple tight games in a row. Right. And I will say also, like, three of their final five games are on the road, and we know that there's a pretty decent split for UTSA between home and road. Mm-hmm. That is for sure. Coming up on the other side, gotta have some celebration for the Pop Tarts Bowl crazy good team of the week, and let you know what we've been, uh, finding out under the hood with a pun further review. All that, and more. Next. This episode is brought to you by PNC Bank. You go up 14, nothing in the first quarter, a no problem, right dogs? It's just all the way to Easy Street. That is not the case. Not with Alex Goulish, and this Auburn Tigers team, the resiliency that they showed, scoring 24 unanswered points in the game, and eventually riding a 34 yard field goal as time expired to take down. Number one, Georgia on their own turf, congrats to Alex McPherson, congrats to Alex Goulish, and congrats to the Auburn Tigers. You are the Pop Tarts Bowl crazy good team of the week. Auburn was selected by the All-America Committee, the Football Writers Association of America. This is their fourth selection all time in the 25 seasons that the FWA has been giving out the team of the week award. The first time since 2017, when they beat Georgia, Auburn's win against Georgia in 2017, got them the FWA team of the week, and yes, again, their win against Georgia here gets them the team of the week honor again. We mentioned it a little bit on Saturday night's instant reaction show, but Byron Brown with a lot of real toughness there, 115 rushing yards in a score to go with the passing touchdown. They had some suspensions on the defensive side and then, hello, Elijah Melendez, nine tackles, a sack, an interception that it was the first win for Auburn in Athens since 2005, a big, big time performance by Alex Goulish here in Auburn. I know that Danny, this is one of your guys. I mean, he gave you in a lot of y'all's conversations, great insight into the coaching transition, the the way things were like at the end of last year with South Florida beginning this year for Auburn.
What stood out to you about Auburn's win as we celebrate them here as the team of the week? - Probably the grittiness of it. When they were up, was it 24 to 14? You're like, okay. And then they blew the lead and Georgia ties it up. It's 24 to 24. And they're like, oh, it was fun while it lasted. And you're thinking, man, it's a good effort. Way to go guys, but you're gonna come up just short. But like they still get there. And I know it was a turnover that was uncharacteristic and gunner stocks and coughs it up. That was just a gritty, gutsy performance, kind of that never. And I think that's what, you know, Barbara Brown and Goulish were able to do a lot at USF, get some ugly wins. They had the one against Baylor earlier a season. Wasn't the prettiest. They just kind of figure out somehow, some way, keep lugging away and you'll get the opportunity. Loved it. I was tearing up a little bit when I saw Goulish with his son, Bear, after the game, you know what he said. He said, he said, Bear asked him before the game. Hey, can I go with you? Can I be on the field when you guys win? And he looks down and he goes, I got you buddy right here on the field with me. I mean, I was tearing up. He was tearing up. That was really, really impressive. - It is so, Auburn got a good one, you know? Like Auburn has a coach who I think is gonna make the Auburn football experience feel a little bit different. And what an awesome win for year one of the Alex Goulish era. And yes, one very deserving of being honored as the FWA team of the week. Specifically, the Pop Tarts Bowl. Crazy good team of the week. Congratulations, Auburn. You will receive a delivery of assorted Pop Tarts and a custom crafted game ball from big game USA. Celebrate this honor and buckle up. Put on the chin traps. Point LSU this week. So no rest at all. You can't celebrate this one too much. We are on to the Tigers. We like to spend a little bit of time every single Monday going under the hood from the week that was. And after a week like we had in week seven, there's a lot to review. So let's call it. - Upon further review. - There were terrible calls. Do you wanna go ahead and jump in? - After further review. After further review. The further review. - There is a press conference at 12.30 PM Eastern time. Regularly scheduled for the Texas Longhorn. Steve Sarkeesian will be addressing the many things that he has in advance of the week ahead, including what the plans will be for the quarterback position. Now DK, I've been informed that we've got a little film breakdown for Archmating. So Archmating, Archmating, Archmating, Archmating watch, Archmating, Ben, Archmating starting. Let's take a look at one of the busiest quarterbacks in the entire sport as we sit here looking ahead to week eight. - I've been fascinated by this whole quarterback experience with ARTS, came in with so much hype and expectations. We've talked about whose fault is it? Is it Sark, is the play colors at ARTS as the quarterback and clearly it goes around to both. So I went down, looked at some film and was like, "All right, am I sure that it's. " 'Cause I think it's more on ARTS. I think there are plays to be made. And they're just not getting done. So we'll see if Striker can get a little video that I sent for them that came up here. So this is early in the game. They're up seven and nothing. You can see the routes that are running here. The concept, they're gonna swing out a little bump. Maybe they throw it sideways a lot, right? So they set this up quite a bit. They throw like they fake the little bubble screen to the left. And then they're gonna slip out two players. Now I think he's supposed to be reading the one circled one, which is like the slide underneath route that's gonna come under that outside one, but it's sort of a scissors concept. They're crossing before. And watch how this unfolds as they start running this play here. You'll see it unfold. There goes the bubble, fakes it. And then he looks and there is a wide open touchdown that ARTS, I feel like he's looking at it, but I don't know if he got locked in on the first receiver or not, but whatever reason, not only does he miss that, but then when he tucks it down, he almost throws an interception. So you can let it run here, Striker. Like he misses the wide open touchdown. Just doesn't see it. Then almost throws a pick. So then it was third and three. So this was second and three. Third and three, they run it. 'Cause I think my mind, Sark is like, I don't think he almost threw a pick. Let's make sure we get some points. They get stuff settled for a field goal. So instead of going up 14 to nothing, all of a sudden it's 10 nothing, then they ran the ball. The next five consecutive plays like the next drive. And it's just, I look at it and it may seem like a little thing, but like there's a big difference and it's going to touch down 14 nothing. Like that's a stop for Florida. If they stop at a field goal, they're feeling like, hey, they get rejuvenated. They feel like they're still in the game. So I keep seeing these kind of recurring themes with ARTS, that was just one of them. Danny, roll that back. Just as a quarterback, like I wanted to add something here. Yeah. All right, Striker roll. I'll tell you when to pause just have a quick finger. Now, all right. Well, roll it back to to where frame or two before where number one is at the 21, right? Like when you see this safety's hips pointed towards the sideline. Yeah, when you know it's a QB like, oh, they're dead. I got it. You should. Yes, absolutely. I mean, look, look how flipped you could see this guy's entire numbers. Yeah. From the single. Yeah. You should be licking your chops right there. That's why like, and you see like a picture almost, you're not even reading one player, but you should be able to tell from that moment, like, oh, this is exactly what you want. Because you're going to get a rub or you're going to get, you know, the wide open player, which is the one that comes open. And it's just like, I don't know what he's looking at. He's not looking. He's just looking at his receiver. By the time number one hits the 10, he's been, he's been like, you should be knowing he's open for five yards. Mm-hmm. Right. Right. And now we've been open over 10 yards and it's still open. Right. And it's still open because I was like, man, I was like, man, could that save the far, the weak side safety? Could he have closed on that? Maybe. But even then, you still have a very wide time, right? And that's not all. Right. Here's another one. So this is, this is another play in the second quarter. Now, this is a third and seven. You're going to see the route concept. You know, is that third and seventh graphic? Is that from the broadcast? Hey, no, no, no, no, no, hate on me. This is good. The toolkit is loving this YouTube.com/cover3. This is a very, very fun film break. Yeah, this is high tech right here. This is high tech off the iPad breakdown. All right. So you see third and seven. Now, there's a, a receiver pressed up top, top of the screen, which is usually a pretty good matchup. But I think you have to consider the situation here. Like it's third and seven. You want to keep it moving. What is your best matchup? So as you'll watch it unfold, you'll see what happens. I don't even think he's reading the bottom half of the field. I think this is a top half of the field throw. So he takes the shot to the end zone. You can let it roll out. You take the shot towards the end zone. Oh, I did this. So, but there's the underneath receiver. That's man to man that is wide open. Instead, he goes for the height, like the low percentage fade route over the top. Now, I want you to see this from behind because Florida brings pressure, which is picked up beautifully by Texas's offensive line. Watch, they're going to wait. They have six to block six. Okay. Yes. Yeah. Bam, right there. So step up and step up in the pocket. There's the pocket. Beautiful. There's that is a clean pocket. I know I'm making there's a guy like that is a clean pocket step up and you can rip the throw right here to the slot receivers. Just running like a 15 yard out. This is a pretty basic route. Oh, no. Wide open to creep. Now, I want you to notice something else. As you keep rolling, watch the receiver's reaction because I think this is starting to be something that's a little bit of a problem. I don't know if you guys saw it. I think I rewinded here. Yeah, because he gives it a little bit of the what the WTF, like I'm sitting here. I have wide open. I toasted my man. You had inside leverage. Like the out route is really easy. Those types of reads are happening all the time where if you're watching on the field, like, oh, we took a shot down the field. It wasn't a bad man to man matchups, not the worst case scenario. But that keeps the chains moving. Like that's another like instead of punting. It's a first down. You keep the momentum going. Those types of plays are there. I don't know why he doesn't see them. It's like inexplicable. Like you see those. And I think that's what Sark is starting to see on tape. And we've seen it all season long where that's why I think all the sudden are going to start seeing potentially changes happen. Do you think that archmaning has ever been a backup quarterback? Probably Thanksgiving like Turkey bowl. Yeah. I mean, I was just like, I was just wondering if as soon as he started playing competitive. He went to Newman in New Orleans, right. I have to imagine that he was going to back up to Quinn yours. Yeah. Yeah. That's a good point. Yeah. Yeah. He was there. And which is why he's had a lot of time in the system to be able to see things and get through reads and real recognize defenses. Like he's been around the college game quite a bit. I was just wondering from the coaching standpoint. Coaches will mention it a lot. I just want him to come and like sit on the sideline, right? And just just watch this. You know, if is that angle there that he's just been in that QB one at Texas role, which Sark has even said is a thing, right? I get being the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns football team is a thing.
It's not just the execution of what happens on the field, I don't know. But would you have it, Steve Sarkisian, would you pull them to the side and have him, you know, spend some time this week, maybe not running with the first team? Yeah, that's the report. That's the report. No, I don't, I'm not asking will it happen. I said, would you? Yes. I've been saying it for two weeks now. You're saying in practice trip or you're saying the game. I think you got to start in practice, right? Yeah. And for anybody who's not like, let's say there's 12 plays of third down, you know, specifics, right? Third down. So normal context, they're hosting Ole Miss this week, right? Right. They better be ready to put up some points against the wall, right? Right. So like for context, like let's say there's 12 plays of third down, you know, seven on seven, whatever the drill is normally, and that this has been my experience. I've where starter probably gets 10 backup gets two. So you might bump it up to where all the sudden KJ Lacey's getting six and you're getting six. Now as a quarterback, you know exactly what that means. You're like, uh-oh, my job, I better wake up. But like arch has not responded to anything else Sark has done. So maybe the fire that needs to be lit is a, oh my gosh, I might get pinched. You know, like if I keep having these turnovers late, cost in my team games, I'm going to lose my job. I like, maybe that's the sense of urgency, but why isn't that been there already when you lost the game last week? You know, like why wasn't that there in this game? Quick words on KJ Lacey. The I was listening back to the instant reaction show and a quote that had me that truly just giggling on Sundays. If you thought Luke Fahey was small, let me tell you about KJ Lacey. So, but I'll let you at least cycle back to give us a little bit more to profile. They listed him at six foot. Um, maybe he had a growth spurt potentially. I thought he was a little more like caught a Murray size, you know, uh, just eyeball on it and certainly could have grown. Maybe not quite as short as as Kyler, but uh, Texas listed a six foot as well. He's put on a few pounds too. Yeah. Uh, so they listed him, I think it 188 on the website. So probably has, um, so he threw to Ryan Coleman Williams who at the time was just Ryan Williams, uh, in, in, in high school. Um, pretty accurate guy releases pretty quick. You know, like if he can just play point guard for them, is that an upgrade, um, mobility's decent. Like he's not like an amazing runner, you know, certainly not a guy that you want to take like a lot of punishment. Not that you want any quarterback to, but like he's, he's not calling climb, you know, um, Texas run game has been kind of garbage, uh, recently too. So if you make this switch, like it kind of is on him, for sure. Um, I don't know how he's going to be against pressure. Like arch, Florida was truly not afraid to, to blitz arch at all and brought it a lot, um, and got away with it. So, you know, we'll, we'll see, uh, what, what happens there? I, maybe he's a big upgrade, uh, kind of doubt it, but I don't know if it, but if it's, but if it's an upgrade in the game management department, that's kind of what they need. Yeah, you know, but like, but is it worth it because you might lose, you know, a couple plays a game where arch flushes from the pocket and finds Cam Coleman and makes a gorgeous throw and you get a touchdown. But like it's also costing you points and costing you possessions. So like that's the dilemma that I think Sark is probably in. I think the one thing too, like if you do go to Lacey this week, clearly you have to do like one read plays to half the field or, you know, the same offense you've been running with arch for two years. All right. Yeah, I, um, before we start to continue unpacking the, the rest of some, some reaction for from Florida state from the canal household, the, uh, the Oregon Nebraska game, which provided college football into the wee hours of the morning. Okay. It was, they were college football games. We got some announcement. It was one of the first things we mentioned on Saturday night. You know, Tom brought it to my attention as we were talking about the conclusion to BYU Notre Dame, not just was there a little bit of a pass interference potential. There was also one second left on the clock and the big 12 agrees quote following the big 12's review of the final play of Saturday's Notre Dame BYU game. It was determined that time remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground and the play was incorrectly cleared by the replay officiating crew. The conference will conduct a complete review of its end of game officiating process in advance of next week's game. Well, I don't do much for Notre Dame here, but, uh, it does at least give us a little bit of clarity because yes, as we mentioned on Saturday night, one second left while that ball is taking its second bounce on on the ground after it falls in complete. Any, I mean, we can't do anything about it here at this point other than a closed loop. Is there any thought here in terms of the extra second that could have been there for Notre Dame. It's very smart to commit past interference there in that situation. Like, you should, you should grab, I'm not saying like tackle the guy, but like, you should be grabby. Right. That's kind of a bang bang thing. I do think officials have a tendency to let them play on the final like play the game. So you're more likely to get away with it in my opinion, and I don't have a lot of data. I don't know how you would track that. But like, I think it's smart to grab for sure. So smart play by the BYU defender. I just, I think it's hilarious because like, even if there isn't a second left on the clock, the fact that there was a past interference would have given Notre Dame another play anyway had they called it. But then they don't call it and there's still a second left on block. So you got to get kicked in the nuts twice by the officials on that one. So yeah, like, there's not a whole lot. There's nothing that could be done about it now. I have forget whole hell of a lot. But just, yeah, it's, that's a bad miss. And we all got robbed of more football and a couple games and it's sucked. Like, you don't want to see a game and like that. I do think from the clock perspective, what have you guys heard about how long it takes the football play? Like, if you guys like, heard a number, six to eight seconds, all we want is just go. Like, I think seconds seconds. So I think maybe the clock operators and the officials got kind of lazy. They saw for it. I bet I didn't, I didn't pay attention, but I bet on the broadcast. This is the last play, you know, four seconds. You just, you assume it's not enough time to get off to play. So you just kind of let your guard down a little bit, but that's not an excuse. Like if anything, we should learn, man, let's pay attention to these. But it's such a, I mean, they were about ready to come on the field and storm the field. Like, it's just, there's a lot that goes into it. I hate it. I think Notre Dame got robbed of another opportunity, but they do need to do a better job of at least paying attention. Like, as a quarterback or as a coach, you're always thinking one play ahead. Like, hey, if this happens, we have to be ready for this. Like, as the officials, they have to be thinking the same thing. If this is a quick play, we need to make sure the clock is zero. Like we, like these, you hope are recovered in meetings this weekend. I'm sure they will be in the big 12 meetings, but got to be dialed into these situations. Yeah. And I'm sure that Notre Dame's conference will take a lot of action, you know, for, you know, standing up for Notre Dame. They can just go to their conference. Oh. Oh, oh, they don't have conference office to be. I thought they should have five seconds by the way. Yeah. Not four. Like, the clock then, like that whole last series was, was kind of weird to me. I kind of think that's a little bit of when we talked about like provo magic or like what happens to go to provo night, I mean, the someone is in that stadium and has to be the clock operator and the timing on that coaches will tell you can get a little bit favorable or unfavorable in certain situations. Amendment for the PCSA, the conference has pulled money together so they could pay full time officials. Oh, instead of just like guys show up on a weekend to do it for a couple of years, like haven't dedicated their life to this. Yeah, you won't fix everything, but you'll probably get better officiating in with so much money on the line. And now with all this, it's just like the silver lining of the Western Michigan Michigan thing is Western Michigan got screwed, but at least it's not doesn't look like it's going to end up costing them a playoff spot down the road. This game is going to have a big impact on the college football playoff. Right. Look at you and you're creating jobs because if you make it a full time job, people find it more attractive, then you get better resources because no one wants to be an official like what kid grows up and be like, I want to be a ref. But if you give them the option to be have a job and make a livelihood from it. Are you prepared for the look, one of the things that the college football playoff selection committee does so well is provide context. You know, they do such a good job and the high esteem that you have to bring when you are committee chair, I believe it's going to be hunter your check again this year. I mean, you know, he's going to be up there and say, well, Reese, committee does recognize there could have been one more second on the clock there. You know, just and see that's where we arrived because we don't know BYU might have stopped them again, but they did not have you that's what that's what sucks. Yeah, 100% who is the basketball committee chair this year? Yeah, don't know who it is this year because all for was the baseball committee chair. And he got the axe and then you're a check is, you know, under fire, not the most low person Arkansas right now, like, is it are we sure that's a job you want. That counterpoint and Martin Newton, Samford there, I think you're doing okay counterpoint when you have roles like that you're setting up your next job. So if you think you're going to get fired, get your ass on a committee as fast as possible because that's how you're going to be able to network.
work your way to your next administrator job. Now that would be the way to do it. All right, coming up on the other side, we got a lot more to get to in a pun further review. Another look back at Florida State's upset effort. Some celebration for the Tennessee Vols in their big time C-Gar light and wind against the tide. And more. - Next. - And this week for our PNC practical plays, we do want to celebrate those Tennessee volunteers in their 26 to 10 home win against Alabama, third Saturday in October. We talk a lot about what it takes to be successful. And sometimes you're able to overcome for some things that aren't going right on the fringes. Well, this was a meet and potatoes win. Our friend Parker, stats a war on Twitter. He always puts out his, did we get beat this bad net success rate? Well, you will go find that Tennessee over Alabama is the 10th best net success rate of all the games that took place in week seven. That that dominance was not fluke. That was something that was happening on a down to down basis. It was happening from running the dag on football. Something that Deshaun Bishop's been doing well all season long. 32 carries 159 yards, two touchdowns. And you know, I mean, just workmen like no runs of more than 20 yards in this one. So it's not like he had the 175 yard run to goose the stats. It was being successful on a down to down basis. And George McIntyre is the quarterback, 197 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. You needed to be able to have that run game. You needed to be able to have that absolutely nasty defensive front, which kept Keel and Russell bottled up all afternoon long. It's practical to have a good defensive front. But what did you make of Tennessee? You shouted out, "Save your Gillum." But I thought that the whole group, it seemed like they were all pulling on the rope in the right direction. What was practical about the way Tennessee pulled off the win on Saturday? Well, I think it's very impressive how fast Jim Knowles has this Tennessee defense ready to play. Like I think we all said, "Hey, that's a pretty solid hire." But it prior stops. It's oftentimes taking his system a year for his players to really fully get it and implement it. And it's taken about three games because they have been lights out on defense for the past four weeks or so. And they continued here. Like obviously Gillum, it was a stud. But like honestly, I thought the secondary pursued the football really well. They made the picture really cloudy for Keel and Russell. Not having Colton Williams out there probably helps some. But look, everybody knew he wasn't going to play. You knew you could put a lot of attention on Brooks and make Keel and Russell a young quarterback for Alabama. It was super talented, quickly find his other options. He wasn't able to do that very often. Yep. Phenomenal, phenomenal performance from the Vols. All right, DK, let's. One formal pull. I got one more. See, this one, it's only screen grabs, but I'll explain it. Whose fault was it that Indiana did not win the game on the last play of the fourth and fourth? Was it Nick Marsh or was it Josh Hoover? I thought it was Hoover should have left him inside, but I'm not a quarterback. I don't make those throws. OK, so that's one for Hoover. Yeah. Because I saw a lot of people blaming different people. I was curious to know what you guys thought. I think it's probably both of their fault. Yeah. Probably the best answer is both. But I'm going to tell you why I think it is more on Marsh. I'll show you just a couple things. Oh, there's a quarterback defending. So next I did yesterday, so I grabbed these screen grabs. Yes, I should have taken video again, like I did with the film. But this is the moment that Hoover has to throw the ball. Like, so you can see him, he's winded up. The ball is coming out his hand, he's got a fender in his face. He doesn't know it's going to be a layup. So he's thinking, I have to throw this perfect ball in case this is covered. We've got our itching go. It's there. So he has to let it go early. But then I want to show you the next shot, which is where I think is a pretty rough indictment. That ball to me is pretty well in bounds. Now is it close to the sideline? Yes. But Marsh there could have easily caught it with both feet and bounds, run in, never really even touched the sideline. He kind of just lost where he was on the field. Receivers do these drills all the time and individual workouts where they're doing like over your shoulder throws, toe taps, keep your feet and bounds. I thought that was rougher on Nick Marsh. Clearly, you're all more inside. It's never a doubt. And maybe I'm too protective of the QB here. But I thought this was a pretty good throw from Hoover that should have been caught 10 out of 10, I guess nine out of 10 times for a touchdown. Yeah. No, that was like a yellow or like a zero level kind of awareness on Marsh's part. Yes. Yes. That was not very good. But that was also like the moment. He might have been so sitting there. He might have been so far in his head. Like, do not drop this ball. Do not drop this ball. That he completely forgot. Oh, yeah. I got to be in bounds. He's got up in his face right after the score. Man, that's a man who knows his job. He understood the assignment. We got, listen, college football broadcast. That's some pretty good cameraman right now. And women, camera, you know, camera people, whoever, whoever's out there, they've got, they're giving us all the goods, right? On the field, sideline, he's just the eyes on these, on these, on these lenses are phenomenal. Okay, DK, take us behind the scenes. Well, let's do, let's say that for Lads. It's a fun and the show type of deal. Okay. All right. So as Tom, you had the, let's see, do you have UCLA or the mid off? Are you both of these? I got both. All right. Cool. Which one do you want to go to? Oh, we can start with the UCLA thing. There's certainly a trend. Like we mentioned it last week with the worst EPA performances of the season with both coming against UCLA, but there was yet I know they're terrible quarterback performance against UCLA. And it was a team that, you know, it's one of the few undefeated teams left. If you look, like Ryan Brown of all people in that crazy shootout with Purdue had an incredible game against UCLA, Brock Thomas performed well when he came in in relief and was not the expected starter. And it was completely different game plan of what it is when you're facing Dylan Ryola, and they weren't really able to adjust. But every other starting quarterback against UCLA this year has finished with a negative EPA per drop-back, their passing efficiency numbers are horrific, their completion rates are disgusting. And look at those yards per attempt for those who aren't watching JKS 6.6, Jaden Denegal 2.6, Malik Washington 3.7, Ryola 2.3, Colton Joseph on Saturday, 4.1. This past defense has been phenomenal all season. And this is like when you watch UCLA offensively, they are a very limited team and you look at what they do on offense. They run the ball. That's what Wisconsin took away. The run. Like Wayne Knight had his worst game of the season against Wisconsin. And the Badgers still had no real shot to win this game because Colton Joseph got absolutely what are the kids say, mocked. He got mocked by the UCLA defense all night on Saturday. And they're just like, this is a team where they lose Nico. You look at him and you're like, they're not great, but they're damn it. They're just good. And they run the ball and they play defense and then they do. And it is winning for them. The year where we don't really have an elite team, they are taking a time-old formula for success and playing it to perfection. What they do in performance must make you change your opinion of what they are defensively. Right? At some point, it's the way it's being coached and the way it's being executed. Whatever the talent rating was that started the year needs to be adjusted because the way they are converting the roster that they have into the performance on the field is just so impressive. So great job by that entire UCLA staff, they are a problem, they're a capital P problem in that case. Do you think DeFenbach is, I think he's going to be okay. Yes. I mean, he looks almost identical, Nico, the 6/6 skinny tall frame, but I thought he looked pretty comfortable. Like, the numbers may not jump off to you, but like, I don't like, I don't downgrade them that much. The way we, I mean, I heard you guys talking about Ohio State, I'm a little bit concerned about Leah, if he has to go, but like, I don't, and especially what Nico was giving you before he got hurt. Like, I think, I think DeFenbach could be fine. My concern with DeFenbach, and again, it was only one game, so who knows, but he's not a, you know, a great rusher, and I don't think it's a coincidence that UCLA had its worst rushing performance of the season without Nico because they didn't have to worry about Nico's legs. And that's the thing about Nico's legs as it wasn't even like he was going out there with 1920 carries a game, but the threat and the execution when he did pull it off was, you know, still, still pretty much impacting the game, even when he wasn't there in a big way. But I, how about this? I think that DeFenbach can still get UCLA to the place where it wants to be at the end of the year, which is contending to be a top 10, top 15 type team. But if it comes to winning a postseason game, I don't know if DeFenbach's going to be the guy against a top 10, top 15 style defense in a playoff game. It could be, but that just wouldn't be my bet on that one, which I know that Rhea just much, though, for me for Nico, yeah, I mean, you know, like that's kind of the point. Yeah. And then Tom, I had some Oregon questions that now, as of some reported arrests news that was coming out this morning might answer some of my questions, but you've got a more specific look at Oregon Nebraska. What's
stood in. I was about to say, what stood down? What stood like, I can't even use the words like up and out when we talk about this football game. But, uh, yeah, a lot of this game is going on. All we were doing the live reaction show. But if you did watch it, like these boys were having a mid off, uh, proctomics and, and the whoopsie daisy king, like worst EPA per drop pack performances of the week. Congratulations to Oregon, while Brock did not have the same kind of performance that Dylan Ryola put up last week, the all time season best, you know, and in the modern era, for the second straight week, Oregon starting quarterback had the worst performance of anybody. You could see Colton Joseph there who we just discussed in eighth place as well as chip boy Parker Puckett in fifth, but then you go down a little bit. And in 15th, there is Anthony Cullandria. It was, uh, it was a very ugly football game. And then Dylan Ryola comes in at the very end, leads a game winning drive, which that drive then inspired Evan Stewart to go out and have a drive of his own, I guess. Did you guys see the drive lengths for Oregon? Mm-hmm. This is insane. I don't know if this has ever happened before in college football. It probably has not, I would guess, like down by two scores, your final two drives to win the game. 17 plays for 69 yards and 20 plays for 82 yards. We were dinkin' and fucking brother. Good God. Like, honestly, that's, that's why I think that, you know, Dan Lening comes to the microphone and is like, no, it wasn't pretty. We've got a lot to work on, but I saw more effort. I saw more like the attitudes that they were bringing, the offensive line was getting out there. And we, there was, there was more fight, I think he saw. And the focus that it takes to be able to maintain those long plodding drives, I think is, you know, not nothing. Like, Oregon's second, the last drive of the game started in the third quarter. Mm-hmm. Right. Yeah. I mean, yeah, don't, don't, don't, it's like there's zero rush for eight. What's the number 12? Pass for two, pass for nine, pass for five, pass for six, rush for four, incomplete, rush for three. So now we're third and, so now we're fourth and three. Well, don't forget them in four. And don't forget that Dylan has come back in for some of this too. Yeah, right. Ella comes in for the game winning drive. Right. And Dylan finishes. And this is what he, because he's getting all the credit for the drive. And you know what, the touchdown throw he made was like, it actually, like, enraged me because it was everything I want him to do on every other damn snap of the game. And he did it on the touchdown. And it was picture perfect. And that's just, you know, he, but Dylan finished 11 of 18 for 59 yards. That is 3.3 yards per attempt on that drive. There's a reason it took him like 35 plays to get him to finish. It didn't rage you. It's former team. It took about about it. It enraged Nebraska fans that he dunked and dunked his way to a win. You know, like on the, on the game winning touchdown, like, because there's so many times where he just like abandoned clean pockets and does all the cool whatever stuff that he's trying to do on the game winning touchdown clean pocket. He senses the blind side pressure coming steps forward steps up in the pocket. Just in time is the defender's arm swipes down. And it would have been like a strip sack. And he just avoids it like with a supernatural sense steps into his throw and fires a beautiful touchdown to the back of the end zone. And I'm sitting there like, why don't you just do that every damn play. So I was going back to watch Dan Lanning's post game press conference. Some of the comments after the game and it's to try to reset because it is a team that at this moment still has a path to get to the big 10 title game. Yeah. No, and we'll see what happens. We'll see what happens with with Julian Sayon, right? You know, because they're a big part step in that was going to be a visit that the ducks have to Columbus here in just a couple of weeks. And if I was going, if I was coming into, you know, any like, all right, here's where the vibes can turn around because that was kind of the message that was that was being delivered. Dan Lanning, I've grown a lot this week, you know, like I've lost 24 pounds, like, you know, all the work he's putting in and all the ways that they're getting refocus. Well, I don't know how much focus there was with the decision making process on Saturday night in the wake of the win. As news was delivered that Oregon wide receiver Evan Stewart was arrested early Sunday on a charge of driving under the influence. It's not he didn't play in the game against Nebraska. He was questionable, ultimately downgraded to doubtful and did not play in this game, but the not not not great, not great timing on that one for the ducks, huh? No. And there's some video of it out there in the internet. If you want to go find, yeah, not great. It's fast and furious action through the streets of you. Yeah, I was going to say that. Oh boy. Yeah, Danny, have you seen, have you caught any of this? I haven't seen the videos. Now I just saw the news report. It is, it is fans. It is, it is the allegation. And I'm, I mean, I know Dan's a huge fan of the cover through podcast, but he's obviously still dealing with the details of this right now, the University of Oregon announcing they are aware and still in the information gathering process. But yeah, I think we've got some some allegations of some racing on a we end of the hours on on Saturday night and not great. Bob, not great. Okay. So the Springfield Police Department did just say that several players were in the vicinity of a separate police pursuit involving a band vehicle, but authorities confirmed the incident was unrelated to Stewart's DUI or the football program. So multiple things going on. I was going to say that's the news that is reported is is the Evan Stewart arrest, but there seems to be just a just not the not the series of of player related entanglements with the authorities the night after a big win, when we're trying to circle the wagons and get refocused on making a run at the big 10 title. That when I am sitting there and I'm trying to think how do the ducks get there? This is not, this is not the path. I agree. Okay, let's see what we got. My coxley not fired, but he fired his defensive coordinator. And I know we were still doing that terms are back. This is I don't think that's the answer. No, I don't think that's the answer, but it is definitely, you know, one of the signs. Yeah, it's it's one of the steps. It's it's one of the stages of grief when you're about to go through a coaching change. You can't be losing to Rutgers. Like, I'm sorry, you just can't. There's there's no coming there's no coming back from it. He's not fired yet, but they're he's fired. Yeah, that's that's that's not going to be great. Late night Saturday action that I did want to highlight briefly that we did not get a chance to talk about because it was it was going on during the show. And then, you know, but maybe not always going to be right at the top of the path, right at the top of the conversation. But man, the there was a there was a lot of a lot of pride, a lot of joy, you know, the the fact that San Diego State was able to to sort of gut out a 26-23 win against Fresno State. Sean Lewis was just absolutely buzzing, talking about his kicker who who banged home a 53 yard field goal right at the end of the game, huge win for the Aztecs. I wanted to at least Fresno State. Now all of a sudden, you know, taking a couple Ls, maybe finding themselves sliding out of that pack 12 picture, but in that pack 12, as all the pieces are moving around, Oregon State, of course, getting the big win against Washington State, Texas State, absolutely throttling Colorado State on Thursday night, but late on Saturday, a 50 three yard game-winning field goal in the final seconds to give San Diego State a win. That offense has, uh, whoo, it has been it has been pushing a rock up a hill, you know, and and they did just enough to be able to get there. So congratulations to the Aztecs on that one. Are they juicing the kicking balls? Ah! In college? Yeah. Because man, there's suddenly like a 500% increase in college kickers, capable of kicked in 50 plus bombs every week. I mean, NFL guys are like routinely hitting 62, 63 yard balls. Yeah. What are we doing? Something has changed. Anything to increase scoring? Yeah. Are you okay with juice balls? I mean, they do let them doctor their balls. They have the K on, they have their special ball that they like to use and they, they definitely have it a certain way that they like it, but they've been able to do that for a while, I think. What did Martin Goir say on the Simpson's? He's like, do you want to know the horrible truth, or do you want to see if you hit some dares? And you're like, dare! I think anybody should do what they want with their own balls, but I just don't feel like, I don't know, it's just, it is very strange how quickly this doll just changed because like the college kickers hashtag, which I started by the way what 15, 20 years ago. Yeah. Like just, it's, you don't see, it's extinct because like two lanes got dudes kicking from 55. San Diego States winning games from 50 plus. Like it is just, I don't know man, like I saw there was a story. Why did some of the power four programs have kickers? I was going to say, but I saw, I saw over the, I was about like, I saw in the offseason, like the kickers all got together. There was a story. I think it was in the athletic about how like all the kickers in college kind of just got a group chat going and they really upped their bag by talking about how much they were getting paid and then they were able to use that to go to their programs and get more money. I'm just saying, if I'm a GM right now,
Now, like if San Diego State can pull in a kid off the street to kick 50 plus yard bombs, I think I'm going to stop paying my kickers. But then Virginia Tech has 36 yards to be able to, you know, win at home. And it's just a pressure burst pipes chips snap hook left. That's college kickers though. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. You can, you can pump that up or whatever needs to happen to be able to make it go. But yeah, still, still something there. All right. Um, FPS kickers are 87% inside of 40 this year. That's the second best mark in the last 11 seasons. And it's 32 makes above your historical expectation. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Indiana and Ohio State missed kicks. Maybe they, maybe they streamline the football somehow, maybe like, there's no, maybe, what, what does, well, got rid of bud for some reason. What's you doing over there? No, no. Like, they silence bud, the kick, oh, no, the NCAA got him. Like, no, I think, I think Shreger just wanted to unveil this great new caron for, uh, for the screenshot purposes. They have clearly done something to the ball. That is just, I don't know, silence me if you want. Oh, Ohio State did not miss a kick. I was trying to think there were some, some big Indiana missed a kick, right? Two. Two. Yeah. Although Gus Johnson never realized it. Peaky balls talk, though, because we are talking about multiple talking about balls, talk, um, dudes talking balls. All right. Let's, uh, let's, let's, let's take, Danny, take us, um, Saturday night. All right. So Saturday night watching the game with my daughter, they were upset that they didn't, they wanted to go to the game. Uh, I was all ready because, you know, thinking we're going to pull off the upset, I was ready to film a post game reaction video and I even had a belt in the hand. I was ready to take Michael Irving to task go a little BTA on him. And then, as I saw it slipping away from me, do we have the photo first striker? So that was, I mean, that is, it's exasperated as it gets. You know, it's fourth and 31, thinking the game's over. My daughter, I wasn't aware she's taking pictures and beyond the ground. And then I was not aware she was filming video and here's the video after the first completion. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. It's not working. Then here you go. Listen for the screech. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Oh no. Oh my gosh. Oh no. Oh my gosh. It's hitting me. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. It's hitting me. That was horror movie worthy, like with the bad guy shows up. Yeah. That is my youngest. That's my 14 year old. She's a die hard seminal fan. She I made the cardinal sin because usually the quarterback, if you throw a touchdown first, the first thing I'm looking for is flags before you celebrate. Like I want to make sure it's clean. I didn't do that. I made the mistake and fell for it. He's got a knife. There's a flag. Yeah. It's definitely the same sort of like tenor there. Oh, just brutal. They robbed us. They robbed us. We still had to get the two-point play, but man, that one hurt. That one hurt. That one hurt. It was a little bit difficult. Hmm. How's the fam doing? Good. I don't know if you heard my line. There was a feeling in the house that something special was brewing and we thought it was going to be a bounding game, you know, it was going to be win one for bounding, but it came up just short. Yeah. It was a tough weekend. I didn't know how fast he was going to go. That's like when I brought bounding on the show on Thursday, they told us four to six months and I found him Friday morning, didn't wake up. So that was a bummer. But I appreciate all the message. Everybody's been awesome. Everybody love hearing everybody's stories about what their dogs meant to them and how they still do. It's tough time, but we are just thankful we had him for a great 10 years, man. He was awesome. Really good family dog. He was perfect. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome stuff. Much love to the whole canal household as they continue to deal with the fall out there. Anything else, UFR related for we set the stage for the week? I do think, like, first of all, that holding call was nonsense, right? But that's really weak. I don't know if Deuce Robinson caught that ball and the refs on the field didn't either. And I do think that given all the different camera angles we have now and the deference that you have to show to the call on the field, we need to have some kind of procedure where especially for like foot and bounds or not, you know, yard marker, right, like as far as down in distance or especially like catch or no catch to the ball hit the ground type situations, we need to have something where the ref control like a blue flag or a green flag or something. And it just signifies, look, I didn't have an angle. I am guessing because what we're doing in a situation is giving major deference to an absolute on field guess. And then we need indisputable evidence to overturn our guess. I think you need to have some kind of procedure, especially for end of game scenarios where it's like, Hey, we have no angle. We're going to make our best shot at it from replay. You know what I'm saying? Because I think the ball is induces hands and it's into Miami, Miami DB's lap and the Miami's DB is like his hands are not on, I don't know that. But I think that's much more likely than an interception by the Miami player there. But regardless, like the guy in the field clearly had no angle on this. And so now you're left trying to overturn a call that we're treating as having like, you know, real certainty. We got a deferred of the call in the field, but at the call of the field, you had no angle for what are we doing? Like we need to give these refs and out. So like, Grant, none of us had an angle on this. We're going to the truck. Yeah. I've written about this before. I do think the weakest aspect of the replay system that we have in sports is the fact that we force the officials to make a call. Like if we're going to use replay review and we have all the angles that can help us with, you know, the, with the calls, don't force officials to make calls when they have no idea. It seems, it's so much common sense. What do you think they would have called if they were open, like if they could have called it either way? Cause I don't like that one was so tough. They didn't have great angles. Probably simultaneous. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Is that Tigers? Usually go to the owner. Yeah. In VAR, they don't have to make a call to say go to VAR, right? Right. Correct. Like they can say, hey, we just want to get another look at this. Technically, like with soccer, they'll let the play go. Right. And then they'll go to VAR if something happens and they're like, all right, we need to see if this was legal. I think about handballs off sides, like the calls where you're not going to stop the game and say, maybe that was a handball. You let it play all the way out, but they still got the mechanism to say, hey, let let's go back and look at that. Does anybody, has anybody ever heard? Cause this kind of bothered me. They seem way too sure of themselves in the command center. And I guess anybody ever heard any pushback? Like are we sure? Like it was just, you have, you have heard of debated a little bit longer. Mm-hmm. I've heard officials on the field kind of not fight, but have a different view of it than the command center, and I've heard them talk it out. Yeah. Well, I think they were sure that they did not have indisputable rights to overturn the call. Yeah. Right. I don't think I would have to speak with, like I've spoken with with such certainty if it was on them to make the call. Right. And I have heard, I can't reference the game, but I mean, I know I'm pretty sure I'm not making this up. I have heard both the command center and the officials on the field this season at one time, like let us sigh of relief that they don't have enough from the replay. For sure. Okay. We're just going to stick with the call, stick with the call, stick with the call. All right. You know, like everyone knew that it was a who knows situation, and they were just glad that they could defer as an easy out, as opposed to trying to have that extra layer to make the right call. FAQs
The Miami Hurricanes moved to number one with 1,697 voting points and 40 first-place votes.
Miami is at number one, BYU at number two, and Ohio State at number three. The margins between them are small, with only about 18 ballots separating the top teams.
BYU has a stronger resume based on their most impressive win, while Miami has shown dominance in most games except for a loss to Florida State, which some argue weakens their overall record.
Some analysts argue that Ohio State's performance was affected by a loss to Texas, a team that lost two in a row, and that the strength of their schedule, especially on the road, is not enough to justify a top ranking.
Undefeated teams are generally given higher rankings, but some analysts believe the rankings don't fully reward them, especially when compared to teams with better win-loss records or high-quality wins.
Georgia is projected to win the SEC and get the No. 1 seed, Ohio State wins the Big Ten and gets the No. 2 seed, and Notre Dame defeats Miami to get the No. 3 seed.
