The Cover 3 podcast offers a deep dive into key college football matchups and trends from Week 5, highlighting standout performances and critical team weaknesses. USC narrowly survived Washington in a chaotic, high-penalty game where poor tackling and offensive inefficiency defined the outcome, while Missouri dominated Florida with a physical, aggressive style that showcased their defensive prowess and offensive firepower. Alabama’s offense, led by Keon Russell, proved devastating against Mississippi State, raising concerns about how defenses will respond to his unpredictable play. Ohio State’s continued success against Iowa, powered by Jeremiah Smith, underscores their reliance on a single quarterback, while Michigan’s offensive inconsistency and frequent penalties signal instability. Minnesota’s win over Michigan marks a turning point in their Big Ten season, demonstrating defensive strength and momentum. Northwestern’s effective use of play-action against Penn State signals their emergence as a competitive force in the conference. Virginia Tech’s loss in a controversial field goal ending, compounded by a quarterback injury, is seen as a major setback, potentially costing them a top-3 ACC finish and a deep playoff run. The episode emphasizes that while some teams show flashes of brilliance, structural issues—ranging from offensive reliance to defensive execution—remain pivotal in determining long-term success.

I see our friend Michael Snowden in the house, easy breezy day for those Ole Miss Rebels. I'm sure he enjoyed every single bit of it, lots and lots of fun in the tailgate as well. We are debating a Mike Loxley or Shane Beamer. We are debating whether or not Wake Forest Resume is worth being in the top 25. So much to get to on an instant reaction show, which of course is brought to you by Modelo. We thank Modelo for sponsoring this and all of the instant reaction shows all through the 2026 season here on the Cover 3 podcast. So Tom, we got a robust day. They said it was a day that you could look away from college football, but dad government, I've seen things today that you cannot find in other sports. This is one of those days where you might have maybe overlooked it and then you would have missed out on some real fun all through the day. I thought normally we like to jump right in on this, but unless you've got something right off the bat for Miami Clemson, I just want to start with a premise here. Okay. At what point did Lincoln Riley think in his own head that this might be the end? Because when you give up 40 some odd yards on 4th and 21 and the defense is applying very poor tackling to my eye, very poor tackling, Washington had a chance to take down USC in the Coliseum and what would have been a second straight home loss in the Coliseum for Lincoln Riley. Instead, USC holds on, they went 25 to 21 here in this night's late. It was the kind of game that from the jump, the penalties, the mistakes, like touchdowns called back. I mean, it was everything that could go wrong, was going wrong for the Trojans, yet they find a way to escape where are you right now with another game USC now five and one the fact that they survived? Oh, this was a beautiful football game. What are you talking about? Nineteen penalties for 158 yards combined between the two teams. This is one of those games where like, I mean, I tweeted about it during it, like, you know, the old saying that far more games are lost than one and this was two teams doing everything they could lose these games to see who could lose it the least. And in the end, USC lost the least, like you're happy you got the win. You're five and one you escaped complete disaster, losing at home to a Washington team that as we've talked about on this show all year, has just looked bad the entire season. And they were, you know, they looked better than they have all year against you on Saturday night in the Coliseum, but you were able to overcome a couple like crazy fourth down miracles in the last few minutes by the demand Williams, but there was nothing about that poor performance outside of like their punting. Oh, yeah. USC does have a punting game right now. They are the lead punting team all of a sudden, but nothing else they do is elite. Like they were pretty mid for most of that game and everything that they were doing. Like they hit a couple of big plays, but you mentioned like the tackling on the deGraft touchdown. That was like the 42 yards along the sidelines USC was literally playing two hand touch. They thought they just had to touch him to bring him down. Like you saw him, he's along the sideline chip and they couldn't even like they were trying to push him out of bounds. And he was on the sideline and they couldn't even push him out of bounds. Like that was the kind of effort you were getting from USC. I really need to be able to go to a USC practice. I want to see what they do. Like is the defense allowed to touch anybody? Because when you watch them on Saturday, it doesn't look like they spent any time preparing how to tackle somebody. It looks like they have no idea what they're supposed to do. It's pretty horrific, but that's the thing is like because we made a big deal out of Gary Patterson moving upstairs as though that was going to change anything. That doesn't change putting your hands on somebody and putting them in the ground in the open field. Like they were, they were like, excuse me, sir, you mind going out of bounds? It'd be very helpful to us. Yeah. Very. But Trojans feel like they are playing with fire right now. It's just, you know, we were going to continue to look at them because it wasn't even a great game for Jade Maeve. It wasn't even a great game for this offense. But we know that it's still there. Like to no kinds. I remember he was a little bit banged up at the beginning of the year. I think he's come on the last couple of games as being a, you know, being the difference maker that I think a lot of people close to that program but looking for him to be. So that's awesome. You know, if you are a USC fan to be able to see your veteran with a room that is hit by injuries and relying on youth to be able to have somebody who's been in house to be able to step up in these key moments in a loss last week and a win here. But man, I don't, I just, I just feel like they avoided disaster or maybe prolonged disaster at this point, you know, just kicked the can down the road. Don't feel any better about the Trojans after the 25-21 win than I did going in. Yeah. They get Penn State next week. So it'll be very interesting to see what they look like in that game, considering where Penn State is right now. Like the, the bigger concern to me is like, we, we kind of expect their defense to be bad. It's, you know, just fair or not. You just kind of like when you see it, you're like, yeah, well, there goes a Lincoln Riley team. But the other aspect of a Lincoln Riley team is they're supposed to be really good offensively. They didn't look that good offensively tonight. Like, only getting 25 points. You had the, you know, 5.2 yards per play barely were able to run for more than three yards per carry. They just were not all that explosive. Two new kinds had the really nice touchdown grab. But other than that, I didn't really see anything from this offense that was overly impressive. And this is a Washington defense that has been, you know, for all the problems they've had in offense. Defense has been pretty, pretty okay. But still for a Lincoln Riley team, you'd like to see them moving the ball a lot more than they were in this game, especially at home. Yep. I will have a lot more hot seat conversation. I thought about that as, you know, the Shane Beamer of it all, the Mike Loxley of it all, we'll get to all that here in just a little bit. But I do think that I, I will only speak for myself, I, I maybe need to take a step back and re-evaluate my position on V Missouri Tigers, because they kicked Florida's ass and we spent a lot of time on Saturday night and a lot of time on Monday talking about how this Missouri team, they ain't played nobody, they ain't beat nobody, they don't deserve any kind of sniff of being a ranked team, that the SEC was being propped up by the miseries of the world that consistently just sit there between 18 and 25 as a quality win for somebody else. Well, how about getting that quality win? How about getting the first top 10 win of the Eli Drinkowitz era at home, beating that team? I thought that, um, I think that John Summer all said it best. He was embarrassed. That was a, that was an embarrassing performance on multiple levels. They got whipped at the lines of scrimmage. Another great like example of poor tackling. They couldn't bring down receivers or Jamal Roberts out in the open field. It sounds from John Summer all's tone and tenor in the post game press conference where he's, look, he's not point any fingers. He's saying everyone's going to take blame here, but Florida, Florida played really poorly and my analysis here, not John's, Florida's not good enough to win when it plays poorly. But Florida, when it does not do the small things, well, when it is not tight, when it is not crisp, it is not overly talented to be able to survive that kind of performance. I thought credit to Missouri for taking big time advantage and just beating them up, just mashing them at the lines of scrimmage, moving bodies around on offense and defense. Just very strong performance from the Tigers equally critical, though, I think for Florida. All of our critiques the last since last year about Mizzou where they were perpetually being ranked for losing to good teams and beating bad teams. Right. Well, that critique's gone because you beat the hell out of a really good team. So when you're ranked tomorrow, you want to hear a single one of us complaining about it nor will we complain about where you are ranked. As for Florida not being able to play well, I don't think it was Florida not playing well. I think Missouri just beat the crap out of them. I think that the defensive line for the Tigers completely dominated Florida's offensive line for four corners, like you look at the stats, like it matches your eyes. Tigers finished with 11 tackles for loss. Florida rushed for 1.7 yards for Kerry. Jayden Ball was a Heisman candidate before today. He's not anymore. Was it 600 yards coming into the day, 613 coming out of it? Yeah. He rushed for 13 yards on 12 carries. Jayden Ball, your Heisman tickets, rip them up because they're dead. They're not winning it after that kind of performance. Just an absolute demolition, like the defense deserves a ton of credit for what they did and we talked about it. When we were going with our lock fight with Danny, our bar fight, the concern was Austin Simmons and these receivers were going to be able to move the ball on Florida's defense. Well, guess what? Austin Simmons and these Missouri receivers moved the ball on the Florida defense.
lead, Kaden Lee finished with a hundred done. Alubeday finished with 94 yards. Like they had a great game. Roberts rushed for 211 in three touchdowns. They were just really able to do any damn thing they wanted for 60 minutes. Like this was probably, you probably got to go back to like 2008, 2000, like that era of Mizzou to think of the last time they looked that good for a full four quarters against a good team. Um, the, um, so Bryce Thornton, uh, but Elliott joining. Yeah. Yeah. What's going on, guys? Raise hat. What's that for? Uh, what, what, what came to we already hit? Well, you're, you're here just in time for Missouri because the tailgate's been asking for but Elliott on Missouri since about 10 minutes before we got started. So we already hit, we already hit Missouri. We are in it, right? We're in it right now. What did we hit? Uh, Missouri beat the Everliving hell out of Florida is the gist of it. Okay. We should rank them. Did you have 39 voters didn't have them on the ballot last week? Wow. That's crazy. 39 30 did some as high as 16, but 39 said no. So I'm guessing those 39 are going to be flipping that to a yes, uh, we'll get to a lot more of the, the absolute not in the middle of the AP top 25, not something of great importance, but the fact that you've got a Florida team with the winning against Ole Miss and Ole Miss team with the winning against LSU, a Mississippi state team that beat Missouri, a Missouri team that beat Florida and an Alabama team that is just flying to the sun. Um, it's just lots, lots and lots happening there for the, uh, Bryce Thornton was ruled out safety for Florida. So if you want to start looking at reasons why I think that's the only reason there, but it's just like the, you know, Kaden Lee and Aluba Day were just running free behind the defense. And when they got like, obviously we know Austin Simmons is not a Yak merchant, but even then they were getting a lot of you, they would get a good, like deep 15 yard pass. The then gets taken another, uh, you know, 20 yards down the line. The one throw Simmons made on that wheel route down the right side line was the back foot throw. Yeah. It's just insane, yeah. Um, but for, for Florida, I do think that there's a couple of things to overreact to. I think that you could overreact and wonder if this team has a good counter punch that if a team Kaden whip you at the lines of scrimmage and shut down the run game is Aaron Filo. Is this passing attack good enough to go and win you the game against other quality teams? Because he's been able to have some good performances. But he is not an overwhelmingly productive player in terms of the passing attack. He's very much a point guard in my, sort of my opinion, somebody who's supposed to get out there and delivered on time. Tremel Jones comes into this game and to be fair, Missouri's probably got their backup sin and quit too, but Tremel Jones led the one second half touchdown drive that Florida had the whole damn game. So does, does Florida have an offensive line that you can just line up and go or does it have to be skimmed up? Does Florida's offense have a good counter punch if a team can stop this? There's a Georgia on the schedule. There's a Texas on the schedule. They had to be looking at this game like, Oh, well, they won't score 53 points a game before able to stop the run because look what happens when a team is able to stop the run. The other piece of this I think would just be we, we never called, uh, Florida's defense elite, but this is a third game against an SEC opponent where they've given up a lot of points. So, you know, just high, high ceiling when they get going downhill, certainly, I'm not going to say that what we saw was fake or, you know, a mirage, but I do think that there was some overreaction that you could say was put on tape and put on display about maybe Florida's not a top five team in the country. Yeah, I, we, we talked about this one big game breakdown and probably on the Monday shows, like, I don't know, like five, and probably last Saturday night too, right? We, we, we talked, hey, like, it's four to me top five. I think we all said like, yeah, you know, top 10 is probably a little more appropriate here, you know, um, they had multiple 17 point leads at Auburn, which is like, not nothing Auburn is not a good team, but they're not terrible, right? Like they, they did beat, you know, ended up blowing out all of this, but we also talked about that was a 24, 21 game before the, the kick return and, and, and the strip sack, right? Um, you know, I think that's like, I think top 10's probably still fair, you know, right? Well, I mean, just aside from the ranking, like what kind of team is this? Is this team a team that's closer to Alabama, Georgia and Texas, or is this a team that's closer to Ole Miss and LSU? I think it's closer to Ole Miss. Yeah. Right. Exactly. And I, I think that that's the, that's where we were wondering is whether or not they were going to be able to be able to jump up there. And how I wonder this, this program is one in seven. And it's last eight SEC road games. I know they've got a lot of new blood in there, but somebody drew a comparison and I apologize. I can't cite this, but when Spurrier first came in, they had been losing a bunch and he came in and there was this big wave of like juice and momentum and they got hot, but then they went to Tennessee and kind of got served, you know, a road game where you're a little bit of a reality check. And so I think that this might be an another one where it's like, yeah, you're getting all hot and bothered, you're in the top 10 for the first time since 2011, we're putting up offensive numbers. We ain't seen since Urban Meyer and it's like, okay, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, all right? You know, this is going to have to be a process. You've got the right coach, in my opinion, but it's not going to all be served to you on a silver platter here in year one. That would have been, that would have been an incredible story, but not a story that I think is playing out here. Do you know what this was, Chip? What's that? I mean, Texas and Oregon didn't play, but this was a separation Saturday. Oh, baby. The cream of the crop, the top kind of separated themselves a bit with some dominant performances, although another game wasn't really dominant, but you know, Miami dominated, Clemson, Georgia dominated, Van Dio, Ohio State dominated, Iowa, Indiana dominated, Rutgers, Alabama dominated Mississippi state. Like all those teams had perfect games and you saw like the Florida's of the world and everybody else kind of drifted, drift back a little bit in the pack where they're all kind of jumbled up. I like, well, yeah, I think that's really fair. He had, let's see, Penn State, yeah, three teams died. Penn State, Michigan, South Carolina, three teams exposed Florida, BYU, Notre Dame. I don't agree. I don't agree. I was already dead. They were dead. Dead now. They are just. Yeah. I mean, come on. That thing's starting to stink. Before we, before we get to, I do want to hit Ohio State and Michigan here, shortly here at the beginning. What's on Florida, Mizzou? I was, I was trying to pull up Georgia Tech games in which Haynes King was not injured when they threw up a stinker, you know, because once in a while, I'll be like, wow, like they just suck today, like like thinking through when Faulkner is calling it, maybe if he just doesn't have the right formula that day, you know, now obviously Florida has a lot more talent than he ever had at Tech. But occasionally there would be one where like the shifts and the motions, you know, didn't fool anybody, the run game didn't kill it. And they would just, weren't effective, right? Also like Austin Simmons just made really good throws. You know, like he carved their ass. Now they had some guys open, but like, the highways that Jamal Roberts could run through. I mean, they were just getting away from the way, like that, that was a back raker. Yeah. But just, you know, that, that game was lower scoring and tighter than a lot of people expected. And then Missouri hit the gas and Florida couldn't keep up. It was, it was a wild one in Colombia. And then as Eli Drinkwood said after the game, it's going to be a cool night, you know, like this is, there's one of, I like celebrating the fan experience all over the country. And the fans in that stadium, as they're playing Tom Petty deep into the fourth quarter. And you know, as they're charging into co, like the people in Colombia tonight are having themselves a ball. So as they should make a bowl now, yeah. So that is a, that is, that is count checks and count a win for today. Let it, let it be read into the record that in week five, Missouri counted the check and counted the win. The Alabama Crimson Tide are a bit of an avalanche right now when they get going downhill. It's kind of, kind of hard to stop. If you were to go and let's just think about the way that, you know, it's not always how you start, especially with Alabama, it's how you finish. So how about you finish with touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, end of game. I think those are all of the second half possessions for Alabama in this game, which was after they did the, you know, pick six and, and quick touchdowns and turning your mistakes into points. I mean, it is just killing Russell Alabama's defense. It is, it feels like the Alabama avalanche. Camario Taylor leaves this game with an injury in the second half, fluff, fluff, bothwell also dealing with some injuries as well, Mississippi state. There was a certain point in the game where it was just clear they didn't have the horses to be able to, to get through here, but what do you, what do you make of the tide in the early slate, taking care of business against Klanga? Like all week week and really like the last two weeks we've given Camario a lot of credit for having to dance around the pressure that his office tackles give up, right? And today he just faced a little bit better past pressure on both sides. I think obviously he saw Dylan Stewart, you know, what last week or week four, but like,
from both sides, Bama just whipped Mississippi State's offensive line pretty consistently. Camario did what he could right early on, but also had the fumble, had the pick, both for off pressures. Now the one he's trying to pump fake, but like they whipped him there too. Like Alabama just is a different caliber player at every position except for quarterback than the state has. And it showed. And like if Keelon's hitting those downfield throws, you're in real trouble. And he hits him at a really high rate. So you're probably in trouble. Working out of take for the five check. I want to see what you guys think. So Alabama, the like the most terrifying team right now because of Keelon Russell. Like if you're a defensive coordinator, obviously you don't want to deal with Jeremiah Smith because unless you've got like an NFL first round corner, you're probably not going to do a whole hell of a lot to stop him. But you do feel like at least if I get the Julian sand, I can maybe stop that offense. With Alabama, like if I'm a defensive coordinator in the playoff, I don't know if Keelon Russell is the guy I want to see. I think that's the last dude I want to see right now because like there were times in this game too where like Mississippi State had him tackled and we've seen it all year. He is sacked by all rights. He should go down. And the next thing you know, he's escaping and he's picking up a first down where he's unleashing. I don't know if I'm going to call him the best quarterback in the country, but he's the most dangerous quarterback in the country. He's terrifying. Yeah, I like to lean it. We're into October. I think you lean it. Oh, happy birthday, Tom. Thank you. Birthday. Thank you. Yeah. I just looked at my calendar on the screen. It's always like October 3rd. Yeah, we're in October now where I think that you lean into scary spooky, not spooky, but like the scariest or most terrifying quarterback in college football is Keelon Russell, gives nightmares to opposing defensive coordinators in the most true sense. Is it Texas birthday as well? Yes, it is also Texas birthday. Happy birthday, Tex. Happy birthday, Tex. May, I wish you all of the all of the advantageous prices on your cattle here on this. I've decided it Texas a cattle rancher because when you were sitting there and cuddle like, like, yeah, getting your locks on. Yeah, this is a great stuff. Fantastic. It is the most points scored on the road against a ranked team in Alabama history. Oh, 56 points, 56 23s can be your final there. And what's coming up next? Oh, geez. Oh, it's Alabama, Georgia. Boy. How scary is the Alabama offense going up against the Georgia defense that has been so solid? I mean, the SEC competition that it has played so far can come with all the qualifiers that you want. The quarterbacks that they played so far as well, but it is still very much up to the standard, especially on that side of the ball. Or we'll have plenty of time to break this game down, but it's going to be awesome. I'd love to hear here at 11.53 pm Eastern time. Just early thought there. We're going to learn a whole hell of a lot about Georgia next week because we really don't know anything. We know that we're good. Yeah, exactly. Like, I think it's scary because Georgia might have to score. Right. And I think it's scary for Georgia. Not they won't win the game. Not they won't be favorite. I don't know what the line is right now, but like, because like, Bama's not one of these teams that relies on like methodical drives. They can hit the home run, you know, and Georgia's defense oftentimes dares you to do that. So like, the run game's looking better. Now, granted it is Mississippi State. Mississippi State probably didn't have a single player on defense who could play for Georgia. You know, oh, well, the corner could, excuse me, but like, the other 10 wouldn't sniff Georgia's roster for the most part, you know? So there's a big difference there. South Carolina, kind of the same thing. Like Dylan Stewart, yes, everybody else, not really, you know? So it'll be a major step up in competition for the tide. Like, same thing with FSU. Like, there's really nobody, you know? So, Georgia's so much better than anybody they've played defensively. Like, Georgia's better defensively than an all-star team of FSU, South Carolina, Mississippi State. Yes. But also, Bama's offense is worlds better than everything combined that Georgia's defense is faced. Yeah. I mean, let's play the game. I mean, again, this is, I think Georgia's very good, but we're just going to see him in a different situation than we have seen them at this point because here are the QBs that they have played. I don't know Tennessee State's quarterback. No offense to him. Don't care. Brock Glenn, KJ Jackson, John Mateer, or Blaze Burlewitz. I thought it was a pretty clean game for Gunner. There's playing pitching catch out there. Ball's not hitting the ground a lot, you know? It's, uh, get it, get it to your playmakers and let them go out there and get, I've got 205 yards of yak on my notepad right now. That fact feels great. Feel free to fact check me on that one, but they were out there running the offense. I mean, that's what you want. That's what you got Gunner Stockton for. That's why you've got the good blockers on the perimeter. Georgia's wide receivers do a great job of that. And it was even though the final score is 38 to 14, another game that was absolutely just sort of never in doubt. So a lot of players get a lot of time. I think almost a dozen players might have had receptions in this game for Georgia. So yeah, it just, you know, clean pitching catch out there. Just getting out there and, you know, running your stuff. A hundred, that staff broadcast has it at 194 yards a yak on 295 total yards. So Gunner had 101 yards, air yards on 32 attempts. Get out there, get out there and go, man, you're just getting nice little workout in. So how will Alabama tackle on the perimeter? How will Georgia decide to, you know, create some counters when they are forced and no longer facing the kind of negative situations that they faced in these last couple of weeks? What is Gunner Stockton's counter punch going to be? We were talking about counter punch with Florida earlier. Well, I'm very excited to learn a lot more about that. Tom, you mentioned Ohio States. You saw this as a very solid check, check some boxes, impressed with what you saw from the buckais and their win against Iowa? Oh, yeah. I mean, that's, at some point, like, I'm convinced that at some point Ohio State will run into a team that can slow down Jeremiah Smith. And I'm concerned if they, that they won't know how to win a game without him. Now, to that point, if you look at the teams that are probably going to be in the playoffs outside of Notre Dame with Leonard Moore and Georgia with Ellis Robinson, I don't know that there is a corner in the country that can really take him away. And I don't think anybody could take him away, but you know, just leave it in a little bit because like we saw last week against Illinois, they were trying single coverage and he burned him for over 200 yards. So this week Iowa says, well, we're not idiots. We're going to double him. We're going to triple him. Hell, we're going to hit him with lead pipes and glass bottles. Well, you're going to do whatever the hell we have to do to slow him down. 11 catches, 206 yards and two touchdowns later, it didn't work. So like Ohio State is just dropping back and throwing the ball to Jeremiah Smith repeatedly. There's no reason for them not to do it. It continues to work. But, you know, they're going to keep doing it until somebody stops them. It's just I worry about when somebody stops them if it's going to be too late. I do think they still have a lot of time to keep developing other guys, though. You know, you can't develop a guy if Julian saying never looks to him. That's the other thing. I feel like Julian saying it's dropping back and it's Jeremiah, Jeremiah, Jeremiah are his first three reads. I think Arthur Smith is spamming him. I think their designing way is to get him the ball. You know, like his numbers continue to be awesome on a per target basis. I mean, 15 targets 206. Like somebody might take that away. You could say text took that away in a second half, but like saying also missed him a couple of times in a second half. You know, like he could miss anybody else who was open as well. Like, you know, I texted a nice job, but that was yeah, I think like this has been a decided kind of Randy Reggio type thing. Like remember when the Vikings did this? Yes. Was it 20 years ago? Yes. For the young listeners back then, Minnesota Vikings announced that they were going to throw the ball to Randy Moss a certain number of times, which was maybe kind of silly. Actually, you could just do it without saying, Hey, our plan is, you know, not that it matters. It was pretty hard to stop anyway for most teams, but look, Iowa is like a good football team that is really good at beating other decent to good football teams because those teams make mistakes and Iowa doesn't. It also doesn't have the capability to beat a really good football team if that football team plays clean and Ohio State did that, right? And like, that's why they had a 25-point lead with 10 minutes left. You know, they don't have a gear they can get to if a really good team is playing clean. They just don't have those kind of athletes and nor the passing game or apparently the run game. Like, I don't know if we talked about that. No, they do not. They're averaging 2.7 yards, yards of rush against powerful competition this year. Like that's, they're in trouble that way. But again, they get pick fixes, they get block ponds, they get all that kind of stuff and, you know, how many other teams on our schedule really can beat them like that, not many. I think they go ahead. They did have four sacks today. They haven't tackles for loss. Like, they look, they're front looked pretty good compared to like, it hadn't been looking great for most of the season. I thought it looked better than it had all year today against Ohio State, which is another theme that for me that's a concern for them going forward. I've talked about it every week. They win games and then I'm like, but their line of scrimmage, they don't look all that incredible.
Um, they started given the ball to somebody other than Bo Jackson, which is Jacobi. Jacobi Jackson is sort of the lead back there. Bo Jackson had a, I think he might have had 10, 11 carries, something like that. But just not, he has not been as productive. I think as it was predicted coming into the season based on the workload he had last year. Jacobi Jackson, I thought it was a bit more productive today. But Tom, I was going to mention that I thought Iowa did a good job of applying pressure, putting in the backfield, stuffing gaps and moving Ohio State's offensive line fair. Maybe to put some of that on the buck eyes, but if I, if you're an Iowa fan, you're happy that Ohio State came to town, you had to put in everything you had to put in to deal with Jeremiah Smith. And yet you were still able to get some wins up at the line of scrimmage that did kind of keep Ohio State from running away with this on design rushes. They were 43 for 189. That's pretty good, like that's consistently getting the, getting yards on the ground. Like their long rush was 16, like they were, they rushed and sesprate like, has to be out with the charts. Is it off the charts? 43 for 189, if you're, if you're long as 16, like, you're probably pretty consistently like state out of the chains of that. Getting else on the buck eyes and the hawk eyes, I wish they would have made that feel goal. So my over one, listen, the, the absolute disrespect for the queen from the Miami Hurricanes, a pick six to take it over with one minute left game that's over as it is. Yeah, but it would not be very Miami Hurricanes to go down. No, I know that's not the quality of that program. I needed, um, yet I got him 31st percentile at EPA per rush, but, you know, different ways to look at it. I, that's, that's one thing I was thinking at for the, for Ohio State. If you wanted to nitpick, but overall, the offense was still great. So, I mean, it's Ohio State. I have the best player on the planet, what did, what did Danny say? He shared a review. He said, uh, you're going to have to take the Heisman trophy from him. Well, did you see what the odds were? Uh-uh. Let me look real quick on the Heisman now. He is the leader. He is plus 110 plus 110 for a long save. Yeah. Well, I mean, sure, it's Jeremiah or the field? Who'd you take? The field. Yeah. I mean, I'm trying to think, you know, there's not 21 anymore like he was last week when we, when we said it on Saturday night. Keeling Russell. Keeling Russell. Yeah. I'm trying. Let me look at their schedule from here on out. I'm trying to find any corners. I mean, Maryland. Ha. Indiana. Maybe they could slow them down, but their front seven looks good lately. Their secondary still doesn't look great. USC. No. Orgid. Maybe Northwestern. Northwestern. It's kind of good Nebraska. I don't know. Michigan. No. Finney, Finney, theoretically could slow them down like, I don't know any more again. Not shut him down. Yeah. I can just, it's like, I don't think he's going to have 200 yards of game from here on out. But I think he's going to have 100. Yeah. No, I mean, it seems like he laces him up and he's going to have 120 in a touchdown. And you just hope it's not 200 and three touchdowns. Yeah. I mean, he's a reliable 10 yards of target. And they're clearly scheming him 10 plus targets a game. On the other side of that rivalry vibes are not good for the Michigan Wolverines. Tom. Yeah. You, you wrote a story for CBS Sports dot com today. Yeah. Kind of the big picture. Feel free to take us big. I'll let you get first word. Feel free to take us big picture if you want, or we could just deal with the nitty gritty of this offense that just still, I know Minnesota is a challenge, but it shouldn't be that big of a challenge. It shouldn't be that. But yeah, I was going to say this is, this is not, this is not it right now for the Wolverines offense. I mean, they just, they're so sloppy. And they've been sloppy in every game all year. Like, I can't, I don't have the stats off the top of my head, but I did include them in the column. Like, they are ranked like 115 to 120th nationally and like penalties in turnover margin and penalty yards, all that kind of, they just like we, as I wrote, the whole talk over the offseason was after Sherone Moore was fired and Wittingham comes in. It's like, well, if they could go nine and four with the absolute clown show off the field of the Sherone Moore staff, and now you bring in Kyle Wittingham and there are some adults in the room. Think of how good this team is going to be. But they're still just as undisciplined. They're still making all these same kind of mistakes. And I got us, you know, like the job that we do, we can't pay super close attention to every single team in the country. But you also hear from fans and we hear from so many fans who are so emotionally invested in their team that sometimes you kind of dismiss what they're saying because a lot of them are overzealous. Like when they start, you know, especially when a coach leaves or something like all the sudden that guy sucks. But like, I'd been hearing from Utah fans ever since he took them, he was retired and took the Michigan job. He's like, actually, no, the last few years weren't great. We were undisciplined. It wasn't perfect. It was trending the wrong way. And what are you seeing at Michigan? So it's like, it's one of those things where I'm like, maybe those fans weren't just, you know, sour grape in it. Maybe they were just like, no, actually, it hasn't been great. We're actually kind of happy to move on because you look at what Utah has been so far this year and you look at what Michigan has been so far this year. And it certainly seems like one side won that kind of, you know, decision so far. Like I don't know that Kyle Wittingham is going to get a second year in Ann Arbor. Is Matt Campbell? Yes. But Kyle Wittingham, different, different, like a $60 million buyout. Yeah. No, I mean, Jason, we talked about it. We talked about that with Matt Campbell in the off season two like we, we bought into the schedule and we got lost in the schedule. But it was also like I said, it's going to be like a year, zero. We kind of situation where the schedule was the best thing they had going for them. And now that's proven to be the schedule doesn't matter. Right. So I still think, you know, like they've imported Iowa state into a big 10 schedule and we're seeing what happens. So do you think that there is a, do you think that there's a landing spot, a path forward? I mean, is this Michigan team going to, are they going to be able to write things? Be able to win games like this because, I mean, the Iowa game, the Minnesota game, the way, the way that they are just, just even with the Western Michigan game, the Oklahoma game. I mean, it's just, it is all, it is all of this, just everything is leaning on the defense and asking for them to make any kind of play, a sack, a strip, a turnover because it is just not coming from the offense in terms of being able to go and win the football game. You've watched Price Underwood now multiple times this season, fourth quarter. Go win us the game and outside of the extra throw against Western Michigan, it just hasn't, it hasn't turned out working out for them. I mean, they kind of have to worry about making a bowl game now. Like if you told them preseason, okay, to this point, you'd be what, three and two. I think they're like, okay, just pointing, but like that's within their own possibility. You have Iowa, you have Minnesota, you have Oklahoma. Now, if we had told them, hey, Oklahoma is going to be way outside the top 25 by this point in the year, Iowa looks down compared to what they usually are, right? And Minnesota would have gotten like crushed at home by Mississippi State. And you're going to be three and two, they'd be like, oh my God, like we're in trouble. And you're like four tenths of a second away from being two and three, right, yeah. They're probably six and six, I think, like if you run through the schedule, and they've got Indiana, Oregon UCLA, Ohio State feels like it's going to be hard to win all, you know, it's like that feels like that could be four losses. That could be six right there. So you have to win out between Penn State, Rutgers and Michigan State UCLA's defense against Michigan's offense, which they should do, like they're better than Penn State. I would hope so. But I mean, and we also like winning him was saying after the game, like they have the buy this week and pretty much all options are on the table, like Bryce Underwood might not be starting against Penn State. And that'll be after Penn State plays USC. Mm-hmm. And Penn State could be in a very bad place by then. Yeah. Very nice. USC might, you know, wake him up. We should probably also talk about Minnesota. Yeah. Pretty big win for them. Massive win for them. Are you kidding? Was it first home win against Michigan since 1977? The little brown jug comes out, PJ Flex going nuts. I mean, it's just to get the full PJ Flex experience two weeks in a row. He's wiping the blood off his linebacker on his face. One week coming back the next week, chugging from the jug. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Lince. Lince sent me that video asking me if it was like real or A.I. I was like, oh, no, no, that's real. Yeah. Well, I mean, we know that like this is, this is him, right? You know, this is if you can, if you get stuck playing a game on Minnesota's terms.
When they are healthy and have all those veterans and all those guys that have played together smith bush that defensive front just absolutely getting after it It can build on you and Drake Lindsey today did enough certainly, but this is still still not a Minnesota offense that overwhelms you But it's super exciting for the fit. It's it's that win for Minnesota It's it's echoes in my head from today the win for Missouri right where she's like man That's got to feel really good for the fans who haven't seen a win like that at home in their own building in quite a while I guess you guys a question of course. What if I told you that After two weeks of conference play the big 10 would have six two and O teams and four of them would be Nebraska UCLA Minnesota and Wisconsin Yeah, the The um, you're good. You're good. You're good The Minnesota would not have surprised me necessarily you you would have had Minnesota I'm on the road at Washington and beating miss Michigan. Oh, I if I just if I didn't have their schedules, right like if you don't like UCLA Surprise Wisconsin maybe surprise, but the Minnesota. I've always considered a Team that is capable of winning games against other Upper middle class big 10 teams and clearly that's what Michigan is now The brass go would have been like the least surprising of that Quote on quote surprising group because like we knew how backloaded their schedule was like I think everybody expected them to start five and oh right Wild stuff Do you want I was gonna save I was gonna save sort of Friday night for its own little island, but I think now is a good time to go ahead and address Chip Kelly absolutely blowing the dust off the wingt playbook and running it right down Penn State's throat. Yep. Oh my goodness Um, I I think Tell us this is not an aid in child story, right? This is a Northwestern story Yeah, I Was awesome. Yes, like we take we played wingt in high school now What they're running is a little more flexible and because it's a little more read based I guess, but like still it's it's close and If you look at Penn State's defense Wisconsin a random on them temple a random on them Maybe Northwestern saw that and said okay. What if we can just run it on them too and They did like repeatedly it's That like child's just being freed up to hit play action stuff right not having like drop back a million times That was awesome good good for the wildcats man. What'd you make of the stadium? To look horrible. Yeah Tom what did you see Penn State or Northwestern biggest takeaways Northwestern's good. Yeah, good good They're not like, you know top of the league good, but they are very much in the conversation of like being at the top of that second tier by the time the dust settles because like the thing about the big 10 this year is Like outside of Ohio State Oregon in Indiana There's a whole lot of like the same Yeah, and somebody's got to win all these games and Northwestern seems very equipped to win most of these games Like if you look at their schedule, it is not I mean, they've got let's see they've got ball state next week But then they've got Michigan state and Rutgers back to back before they have to head on the road to Oregon And they get Iowa then they're on the road Ohio State but then they get Minnesota and Illinois like outside of the Oregon in Ohio State games right now Like this is a team that could finish nine and three with their three losses being Indiana Oregon in Ohio State and Kurt Signeti told you I mean he was like, that's a good football team, you know, you can't and you think that it's like Oh, that's just what you're gonna say when you won 29 to 23 and everyone expected you to blow the doors off him But no, that was a good football team and they have just proven it Over these last couple of weeks rounding into form at the right time remember Northwestern had that weird off-week a week to buy A little death. Yeah, we don't really had the the full look at this, but you know, man What a what an encouraging sign for David Braun who as we continue to put the Because was Braun Was Braun No, he was either North Dakota state or South Dakota, right? I believe it was South Dakota I could be wrong, but just it was a throw him on there with all these coaches that were starting to see you know like We were talking about the Jake Dickards at the world. We talked about the Jimmy Rogers is of the world You know like the the performance is that we've seen Iowa State won a wild one against Western Virginia But you know just a great job of being able to get that team prepared smart hire with Chip Kelly in the offense just Motor through Penn State. How bad is it for the nitty-lions right now this NDS you by the way for the chat. Um, it's not great like You looked like crap at home against Wisconsin, and you look just as bad on the road against Northwestern and Like the suddenly that very easy schedule Doesn't look too easy anymore like we didn't like if it was a three game schedule Like we thought it was before the year began like obviously the road trip to Washington Probably still be very difficult for this Penn State team, but in reality that game doesn't look as difficult as it did to begin with But USC and Michigan where the two games we all thought would be your two biggest games. Those are your next two games And you're entering amount of two game losing streak Like there's a very real chance your three and four when Purdue comes to town and let me tell you something you don't want Purdue come into your stadium right now Trust trust me on that 42 pass attempts for Rocco Becht is not on your wish list. No if you're the head coach They couldn't run the ball. They just left him to go try and win it. That ain't work either I was gonna blame the staff For bringing Rocco Becht and thinking he could play in the big 10 because I've been very down him for a while But also I think you have to blame Penn State's AD right for having Months to figure out who the coach was gonna be and not getting a higher down until December 5th Right like by that point in time a lot of these transfer portal quarterbacks are kind of like secretly signed You know, so I don't think Penn State probably had as many options out there in the transfer portal at quarterback like Penn State should have known hey, this guy probably can't play in the big 10 You know like we've had him for like this Iowa State staff has had him for three years or four years or whatever it was But I don't know what other options they really had you know Because again Penn State took so long to get this AD thing figured out for the like you know with the coaching hire The the use that bronca my okay He's pretty good Do you remember when the leaked audio of Pat Kraft saying that like if this doesn't work. It's it's my job and we were like oh, that's interesting. I wonder you know Encouraged by it. I guess or you know enthused by it and ra ra yeah or AD cares about us Well, guess what? Bill's due and me reaping me sewing me saying that my job's on the line if this doesn't work out. Oh, no We've got a couple of back-to-back big 10 losses and things are now all the sudden looking dicey I I'm not gonna sell my Matt Campbell stock because of this No, I don't think they're gonna judge this on one year I think that they need like a second year where they don't have to rely on just importing Iowa state players I think they've they got a recruit and I think they have to have a nice transfer class next off season and I think they could be fine Yeah, it if Penn State like starts spending spending I Think they're fine I don't think that's a super easy place to recruit to I don't think that staff has a lot of killer recruiters on it like They're gonna need some serious cash Coming up on the other side While Penn State was losing We were asking ourselves a question. Wait, what was that kick good all that and more next back here on the cover 3 podcast Pit winners of a wild one in Blacksburg 35 to 33 you lose mason Hinesholt now We know for the year with the knee injury helmet to the knee ACL intro I think is ACL, right? Yeah, just so yeah, that's devastating But with a backup quarterback crazy game back and forth Hokies had a chance to win it late kick goes up. It's hooking left. It's hooking left. It's hooking left Kicker thinks kicker thinks he's got it, but but officials say no. What say you? I say it's no good. There was a pretty clear view from a fan Like on the other on the sideline view from to the left of where we're looking in the video right now That showed the ball was pretty clearly wide of their uprights as it went by Yeah, it wasn't good like Live I thought it was no good. Then I saw the kicker's reaction. I was like wait a minute Yeah, right and then because it didn't go to review I figured like review probably had some kind of like real good angle on it's like no, this is not good And then
like Tom's right, the fan video. It's a mess. Well, you know what? It, it, it brought back the old Jimbo lasers. Yeah, I tell you what. Now we just put a laser on top of goalposts going to worry about that. All right, laser right there. Um, yeah, I thought about Jimbo and the lasers on, on Friday night, as we were, as we were watching that, I didn't love the way the Virginia Tech handle at the end of that game. Also, you know, I, yeah, yeah, grunk of my kind of cooking. I would have preferred maybe a little bit more aggression, but that's just my own flavor here. Big disappointment. I feel like this is a blown opportunity for the Hokies. You had an unbelievable environment. You had the Mason Heichel's out of the game and just, they kept beating themselves, man, I just, uh, very disappointed with what we got from the Hokies. Because now we've got a pit team that was resilient, that is five and oh, but we're moving them ahead without Mason Heichel there anymore. And it's really tough to think that they're going to be able to replicate that quality performance without him the rest of the season. Virginia Tech now has taken a conference loss that really they needed if they were going to make some noise schedule gets really tough for the Hokies as they continue to spend things forward. I think Virginia Tech can still have a successful season where they look up in mid-December and be like, all right, that was a good year one. Let's invest. Let's go and let's get this thing done and work on the 27 roster. But, um, if they were going to be in the conversation at all for a spot in Charlotte, I kind of feel like they needed this one. So opportunity lost for Virginia Tech. I still think it's a pretty good football team, but very clearly far from perfect. If they had won this, they would be the clear number three team as far as like, at least in my model, like the odds to make the AC championship game. Like it's Miami by a mile than SMU because Louisville lost and SMU's kick-walk schedule. And then, like, take your pick. Absolutely perfect ACC football game. Close, fun, exciting, questionable decisions. And the best team or the team that won is kind of screwed because they suffered a quarterback injury. So you'd have been better off had that kick been good. Right. The league would have been bet. It's always better off if that kick is good, right? Whatever is worse for the league is normally what ends up happening. Just imagine like in any coin flip scenario, what is going to be the most sabotaging result for the conferences overall standing at the national level? Yes. I will, I want to say just a tangent here. Going back to the Jimbo idea of the lasers. Because you hear fans saying, why can't we just have lasers? Baseball's got the ABS now. tennis has the out of bounds, whatever the hell they call their thing. Here's the thing. It costs a lot of money to install that at every single stadium these schools have to pay for and they might have to use it once a year. In a baseball game, there's 300 pitches a game and a tennis match, there's 500 balls that you're judging per match. There's a bit of a difference as far as the ROI on the investment. The other thing is back when I ran Tom Ocknation, I think there was an FAA issue here with pointing lasers up into the sky from the goal post. Let's go. So now you've got a lot of crazy guys with dirty, the James times like we had a lot of articles we had to write. But I remember like the comment section was like, yeah, also, bro, shooting lasers up into the sky straight up is potentially problematic. Let me ask the chat a question. Would you rather your school pace, three million for a quarterback or for lasers that shoot into the sky from the uprights? Again, just dole settle for the field goal. Let's be a more aggressive five plays earlier. You know, that should be possible because consider now like we don't have lasers. We better go for it. I mean, it was what a 36 yard or two and that thing was hook and hard as soon as he hit it is tough go on what looked like it was going to be a really fun night Virginia Tech jumped out to that early lead and just could not put pit away. So a very paton or doozy when you're down to your backup quarterback and you're never say die and you're just you're awkwardly doing wrestling moves with all your assistant coaches celebrating the win. Look at the ESPN cameras selling everybody to rank us. I mean, it's it's all fantastic on. Yeah, absolutely. I love it. Call it out the voters immediately. Yeah. Okay. Let's let's go. I wish you would have looked in the cameras that are talking you Ralph Rousseau. You idiot. So was so they tell me that the rest of the sasses like he starts going one by one on the balance. Oh, man, I would I would enjoy that. But like looking at their schedule, though, I don't think high school is a good player or sorry. High school is very good. Yes. I don't think the backup is a good player, but he's started powerful games before. He's not totally unplayable and their schedule outside of Miami is not like crazy. Yeah, it's not like he wasn't terrible in relief. He was just jagged. Whereas high school looks pretty jagged for most of the game of self. You know, he's got a much higher ceiling than that. Right. I've just been calling him entourage because his name looks like Adrian Grenier. I call him Vinnie Chase. Never happened to that guy. Is he done anything since entourage does he need to? I don't know. You could just, you know, like RIP Dennis Haskins that guy was Mr. Belding forever. You know, he was just going to like minor league baseball stadiums just being Mr. Belding hanging out about a bit Adrian could be Vinnie Chase forever. Okay. We mentioned the Notre Dame fighting Irish a little bit wet wet wet day here in the triangle. We saw it at NC State Louisville and then we saw it certainly play a role in in the Notre Dame North Carolina game. A game that was 21 20 in the second half North Carolina. I thought got up off the mat in ways that I that North Carolina fans are telling themselves is encouraging, right? Like, hey, we didn't quit. We didn't break. We like kept getting up. We kept swinging. We kept trying to get back in this thing. But the fighting Irish every single game this season has been an increase in rushing production. Now, some of this was the conditions, right? You're not asking CJ Card to throw the ball a whole bunch when you do have an actual downpour. But I do think that Notre Dame's offensive line against a good North Carolina defensive front got stronger as the game went on. They leaned on them and they in the ground game had its most productive game of the entire season. Those are all good check check check check stuff that you want to have for Notre Dame. Maybe you want to criticize some defensive breakdowns or some special teams gaps. That's fair. But I don't want what what stood out to you all from this one. So I forgot the kid's name, but North Carolina's big nose guard. When when Xavier Lewis 90? No, not Lewis. The 91 Jackson Jackson. I think so. Like the big kid they have, but like the runstop or not not the penetrator with the big belly. Yeah. When he when he had to be helped off, it felt like Notre Dame was like, all right, we can get movement here. This we're going to go inside run all day. Yeah. And it really changed like you could kind of visually see it was like, oh, okay, the backup is materially worse. And they're going to attack that at the point of attack. And like I thought they got good movement on the inside. And they were like, all right, it's raining. And this is a weird road game for us right now. We're just going to lean on you and do this. And it worked. Tom, what you get? I mean, yeah, the run game look good for the most part. Kind of a weird weather game defensively. You kind of touch down it. They had some breakdowns, but they didn't have. I don't think they played poorly overall. I think they had bad plays. Yes, agree. Yeah. So, you know, that you're not going to be perfect. So the game was closer than you probably would have hoped. But I would say like my my concern was mostly going into this one. Like, well, they're facing a bell check defense. Is this offense going to struggle? No. They put up 475 yards at 37 points in the rain. I thought Bobby Patrino called the decent game. Billy just doesn't. Billy can't make all those throws. No. And he's limited. He's not as surprised as he was before the most recent surgery. You know, I the escape. He was able to he had on the 95 yard drive, he extended the drive with a couple good, like third down runs, move the sticks type stuff. That's supposed to be what Billy Edwards can do. But he also as soon as the offensive line is given way, he's not escaping. He's not escape of especially of all defensive fronts. Notre Dame is one of the best in the country. He's not escaping Notre Dame's defensive front. Once those pass rushers get free of blockers. I mean, he's you're pretty much going to get chased down like prey in the jungle at that point. I made this. I'm probably going to hold it up. Yeah. See, I made a banner, closest margin, versus Notre Dame. I thought that, you know, like it was such a such a good day for Carolina football. Even put the our guy on it. The softest fricking pattern that a football team could ask for when listen, when they scored on that first touchdown drive, I was like, what is the deal with this team and those first drives just out there scheming. Should we just like should we just bet like no
North Carolina first drive, touch down every game here. I'm hanging a banner, closest margin against Notre Dame, 2026, North Carolina Tartiels. It is hard outgain your opponents by 220 yards and be plus two in turnovers. And have it be an 11 point game? I know. I mean, that's why you get Bill Bella check and pay him $10 million a year. That's right. It's the hidden yards, you know, it's the hidden yards. Yeah, North Carolina side, it's very interesting because you can lie to yourself and say that in these last two games, you have not looked like you were uncompetitive. But at the end of the day, you're looking up and you're like, okay, so we beat TCU in Dublin and East Tennessee State, we're two and two. So they got to win some coin flips here in the next couple of weeks. But do you know who's coming up next for the Tartiels? Yeah, I saw this pit, a pit team that just lost its starting quarterback. Here come the Tartiels. Let's go. Is Louisville season over? Respectfully? No, they do have to play the remaining games. Oh, okay. Because they're two and three and all the good vibes off of look how close we played Ole Miss. They're all out the window. Yeah, Ole Miss is like, hey, can you guys not quit on season? Please. We'd like that to be a resume win for us, maybe. Louisville loses at NC State in a very, very crazy game. CJ Bailey, no, Will Wilson fumbled. You're not going to believe this. There was a fumble in the red zone at the end of at the end of an NC State game. Will Wilson was fumbled this one. Replay came back and showed that he was actually down, ground caused the fumble on that one. But some real terror through Carter Finley Stadium with a decent turnout in Pontios, just getting pounded with the rain and all of the anxieties on display. But Wolfpack got one out. Not great for the cards though. No, they fumbled five times out. Only lost three of them, but they fumbled five times. Hard to win that way. I mean, yeah, though, they're two and three and they've still got to play, I mean, they've got Florida State next, and Florida State looked pretty good today. So their playoff hopes are done. And when you're one and two in the ACC, and it's a 16, 17 team league, like, it's hard to get into the top two with two losses. So Louisville Instagram, and I have insider information here on this because the guy who was sitting next to the night at the game on the other side of us was a Louisville student. Yeah, like, it's all like fire, bra, like, like organize a walk out on Friday night, when Florida State comes to town, all this stuff, like, okay. Yuck. Uh, so yeah, like guys, you have like, what two close conference losses and you lost to a better team and Ole Miss. Well, we said going into the year, there's an insider outsider split. The insider says you win non-plus games every single season, what are you complaining about? Insider says we just lost the stupidest game of my life. And you say that two times a year, you know? And now with back to back loss. They're going to do that. Yeah, but listen, that was back to back losses to Wake and State. No Louisville fan is like, yeah, that's why we joined the ACC to lose to Wake and State in back to back weeks. You're losing to the triangle and the triangle hangs banners for skipping it close with no other game. There's the way you could play markets this and pull fewer big upsets and also be upset less, right? Like, sacrifice a little bit in terms of athleticism, you recruit, okay. You're not going to pull the big upsets. You'll lose by 14 Ole Miss and go for a little more like football smarts, you know? But like, they want to get the guys who can run and hit. And the guys who can run and hit and who are also really football smart don't pick Louisville for the most part. It's about like the best way I can kind of try to put that if that makes sense. Yeah. Makes sense. A lot of football smarts for the Demon Deacons and 57 points on the scoreboard against Stanford. Geo Lopez is on one man. I know that Stanford had to play its role here too, but when you combine the performance against Louisville with what we saw here against Stanford, the offense is just humming right now. He passed on the family report this morning that Stanford's like two or three best offensive players around. I was like, okay. I need to get out this money line and need to bed over because they don't have depth. And you know the only reason the over hit was because-- It's because which. Yeah. Heroes, heroic stuff there on behalf of the deacons. Let's pivot over. Anything else sort of? Oh, Florida State. Oh my gosh. And Daniels, four touchdowns. Mike Norville, Florida State to decide we're just going to run right at you and Virginia didn't have anything to stop it. We continue to be, I think, on Bobo Buello watch in terms of-- I mean, is he healthy? Is he not healthy? He's never healthy. He's been healthy since 2004. Yeah. He's just not as effective. Catch him as a spring chicken a week zero, you're like, this guy's going to be ACC player of the year. Get a couple of hard hits on him. I think he had two design runs, three scrambles and they sacked him 10 times. Boys, the pass rushes, but I didn't watch the minute of this game. But the pass rushes back. I can certify that. I mean, here's like how-- I don't know if I'm not a Florida State fan, but like how I would feel because of this game? Like this game I think would have been painful to watch because you know that Norville's done. But it's not going to work. But you watch this game and you're like, this is what it was supposed to be every week. Like this is what Norville's teams are supposed to do. We ran wild on these guys for 281 yards, just completely overpowered him. And our defensive line just absolutely killed him. And you're sitting there thinking, this is what Florida State football is supposed to be. Why the hell is this happening once every three years right now? This should be how it is every week. So Norville extension, he's still rolling. My best guess is like they find a way to get the 7 and 5. The school finds a way to sell that. The recruiting has been garbage. So like there's really no foundation there at all, but they're like cool 7 and 5. We can sell us tickets next year again, claim improvement, you know, right back here next year. Do you think that we are right back here tomorrow with sirens for Shane Beamer? Do we think that's a instant reaction pops up? It's like a South Carolina, a sirens job. Typically no, but if I agree, we'll see. I have the graphic ready if so. Thank you, tapped. Thank you. Because it's hard to, it's hard to elaborate more that is not already obvious. That went wrong with Shane Beamer at South Carolina, you know, like it can be laid out pretty simply. Who are the candidates? It's very, very early to be able to start spinning that one forward, especially for a job like South Carolina, where South Carolina, if like if USC doesn't, if if USC and a bunch of the big jobs open up, South Carolina's got a very different pool. If USC and Florida state open up, it's a very different pool for South Carolina than if USC and Florida state both state put. So we'll see. What do you think? I think he's probably out. I didn't watch this game, but it was a fun game. It was a very fun football game between two bad teams. Yeah. And they're going to come up to you for second took a bad team, but they're okay. Their record is not bad, but they're not like they've got the road win against Texas A&M who has looked bad and they got a road win against South Carolina. A team we're asking if they're going to fire their coach tomorrow. Like I love what Will Stein is doing there. I love the fact that he went for two in the very first overtime instead of trying to extend the game. But Kentucky like you look at the you look at the SEC. They're not a great team. It was a very fun game. I enjoyed it. Good win for Kentucky. Shane Beamer here on the news. He's in trouble. I don't like he's not going to be back next year. I think it's really just a question of, you know, do they rip the bandaid off tomorrow or do they just let it drag out a little longer? All right. So they want to know who is in our, like definitely a emergency jobs list. There's like six in the big 10. There's probably eight in the SEC that I think are no doubters for state Miami and Clemson. Right. So that's 17. Notre Dame makes 18. And I would say three or four like weird ones. It's like, oh my god, they fired this guy, right? We fired up like like no doubters. The rest of them are sort of like, like, let's figure it out. Or, like, say they fire their defensive coordinator during the first quarter. Right. Oh, Texas Tech. Yeah. Because of how much money Texas Tech spins. Yeah. Like if they ask me to wire, which I don't think you're going to do.
'cause they won the night. Then yeah, that would make sense. - I think another way to put it is, if the job weren't wondering if they could pull another sitting head coach from a P4 program. - South Carolina could. - They could, but maybe not the kind of name program that you'd, yeah, I don't know. I mean, I've seen, I saw a message board, South Carolina fans talking about how they got to throw a bunch of money at Kurt's dignity. So who knows? - Oh, what? - Yeah, exactly. - A sense of reaction show brought to you by Madeleine, which is now all over Bud's keyboard. I have to realize some of the South Carolina fans have their-- - They're very sober, but they can get Kurt's dignity to leave Indiana to take the South Carolina job. Indiana, Indiana Rutgers, anybody got anything here? It's on my watch list. But again, the late slate can get a little bit dicing in terms of how much I can take in while also writing and also prepping for the pod. So that's one that I just, I didn't get my arms around. I saw that they created enough distance for me to not worry about it, but-- - Yeah, I looked at that matchup and said, I probably don't need to watch this game and I didn't and I didn't. - It was over in the first half. - Okay. - Like they came out, they hit their throws. I watched the highlights of it, like those were okay. - Cool. - And what's his name ran for 200 yards a week after Lee B.B. ran for 200 yards. So two weeks in row with a different running back rush for 200 yards, things you'd be trending in the right direction for Indiana. - Yeah. We were looking at those as potential concerns at the beginning of the season and then, I mean, it's just like last year. Remember, the old dominion game was the one that made him the most angry. So, you know, we start stacking this, start moving in the right direction. Also in the later slate, the Miami Clemson game, as we look at the Canes, as they continue to build this out, a lot of injuries in the secondary, phenomenal opponent, if you have injuries in the secondary. I mean, not for the Bryant Westgoat at all, but at least for the quarterback, you know. - Jesus. (laughing) - This is all I want. - What's his name, the right tackle suffered an injury too. Like he came back in the game, but he did not look very good after the injury. So that's something worth monitoring as well. - Yeah. - What were the ariards for Tate Reynolds? - On the pick six, they were at least eight. So he had 139 and then he had the one huge play. - Yeah, the Westgoat. - Yeah. - Which is total, I mean, he was chucking it up there. I mean, they were, they were trying. - It's not officially how it works, but minus the yak he threw for 111 yards on 44 attempts. So. - It was good to see Mark Fletcher really back and just like running, looking healthy, banging through the line of scrimmage, getting downhill. Just a good reminder that Mark Fletcher's playoff run, was really, really special. We can't expect that to happen all the time, but obviously it's a difference maker. It was a difference maker in helping them be able to get to the national championship game. When he's in fully healthy, leading the way in the lineup, that's awesome, awesome stuff for the canes. And then in Ederian, Mensa, Grades, thoughts against, as we mentioned, a pretty good past defense. - I thought he was tough. Like they hit him a pretty good bit tonight and like he hung in there. - He had nine incompletions. Does he suck now? - Oh, because he only had 12 incompletions coming into the day. - Every single week he'd be hearing about, he only had two incompletions in this, now he's had 12 today, so he's asked now. Sorry, that's just the way it works. My only concern honestly, I do wonder about them in the red zone. They're scoring out a lot of big plays. When they get the red zone, they kind of get bogged down a little bit in the passing game. The run game should work for them still though. - Do you think that's the bodies that they have or like the pieces? - I don't think men's is as good of a pass or in the air then the field gets smaller. - You also don't have to respect the run game quite as much this year. I don't think tight end is quite as good as it was last year. And Tony in the red zone, there are certainly things they do with him that make him effective, but he's not like a physically big target. Barcaded, Barcaded, like Barcaded got more involved than I at least, which is probably good. Yeah, it feels a little spready in the red zone without like a big time cubie run through it. - I mean, they do have an old school air raid, like through and through as they're O.C. at the end of this. So, if they're pulling out or like how mummy Mike leach type stuff at the red zone, that's what they used to do too. You just gotta be able to punch that in. And for Mensa in the red zone, also had issues at Duke. - Yeah. - Yeah, you know, something else to monitor. Miami's defense, we will see if that becomes, is the floor state game next or is it off and then floored? It's off and then floored. - No, fourth day has Louisville on Friday night. - That's right, and then Miami next. - Yeah, Louisville on Friday night, what could go wrong? - Hmm. - BYU TCU, out in the Metroplex. What do you see from TCU? Was it inspiring or what are the big takeaways here? - TCU played hard. Their offense is not very good, neither is BYU's. And like the pick almost six was the difference in the game really, you know? Like, Bach Myers passing was terrible. It was raining, like TCU blanketed their pass catchers 'cause they're okay. And BYU is just Iowa of the mountains, right? Like, they're consistently going to win against below average. - They run the ball better than this Iowa team. - Against much worth competition than Iowa has to face. - Yeah, but it's not like it was a very pretty running performance. - Oh, it got better, it got better as the game went on. Like, it was a, it was a TCU's run defense has been good, grades out as good for most of the season for the first half and into the third quarter. I thought that TCU was doing a great job of that. And then you could just, you could kind of sense that are those empty possessions from Jaden Craig, you know, possession after possession after possession. At some point, you know, things were gonna break a little bit. And I kind of felt like BYU got a little bit downhill on that. - Agreed, I like, I mean, TCU's passing game was better than BYU's tonight. BYU's defense won in the game, like, I think BYU's a good football team. Like to me, they're just, they're literally just Iowa against a weaker schedule. You know, like if they will wait you out and you'll make mistakes because most college ball teams are not good enough to avoid mistakes and they'll capitalize on those and they'll win the game. But I think they have a very limited range as to what they can be as a team. Like, you really can't have them outside the top 30. And I really don't think you can have them inside the top 15. You know, like against a, like a really good team, they can't hang. Like, and ugly it up. If the really good team plays like crap, they're gonna have a chance maybe. But like, if the really good team shows up in place, like an A or B game, they're toast. And also, like, they're just not gonna lose very many games because they don't play anybody. And they're really good on defense. - This is a boring game. You know, I had it on, it was my three star lock. I finally got one, but it was just, it was a very boring football game. It was like, I had it on the quad screen with the Eeping game. So I was just, every time I looked over it, I was like, "Okay, there wasn't really a whole hell of a lot going on that drew any kind of excitement from me." - Coming up on the other side, we take a look at the changes that we expect could be coming in the new AP Top 25 poll and more of our week, five observations and more. - Next. - Back here on the Cover 3 podcast and re-ranking the Top 25 is sponsored all season long by Madelo. - College football season is Madelo season. The fight songs, the fan quakes, the rivalry trophies are all better than ice, cold Madelo in your hand. It's not just game day, it's tradition. And those who keep college football traditions alive deserve a Madelo. Madelo is the official beer sponsor of the college football playoff. I hinted a little bit earlier that there is a big old knot in the rankings. Good news is it'll probably get sorted out by the end of October. But for now, we've got an Ole Miss team that has a win against LSU but a loss against Florida that was off, right? So how much movement could even happen there? LSU took care of business against McNeese, but like I mentioned, Florida now has a blowout loss to a Missouri team that lost to Mississippi State, which just had a pretty sizable loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide. So how do we place these teams against each other? I have made the projection that Florida and Missouri will not have their head to head respected by the voters, but that Florida will be dropped and that Missouri will go up, but Missouri will not be able to jump ahead of Florida because of voters who are still hanging on to Ole Miss.
miss win value. This happens, this does happen. Disgusting. Yeah. What do you think would happen? Would you slide Florida all the way down so they're 10 spots below Ole Miss? Just a little bit better line up when I'm sorry. No, but no, you're right. I mean, it probably will happen. But it's going to, what's going to be I mean, I've got all these teams for those, like, I don't expect everybody to have this. But all of this is happening in the midteens, right? I mean, these are out. These are all teams that are going to be outside the top 10 that are going to have potentially, and I think they're going to land above Tennessee because what like Tennessee beat Auburn today. And technically, the margin 10 points was greater than Florida. But I do think that if you're looking for the wins of value, Mississippi State has a win of value against Missouri. Missouri has a win of value against Florida. Florida has a win of value against Ole Miss. Those are, I mean, honestly, if you want to start asking some questions, we can ask questions about LSU. I just don't think those questions are going to be asked right now. What questions you have about LSU? What is the win of value for the LSU Tigers? They just beat the crap out of McNeese, bro. Just in state rivalry. Throw out the record books. The Will Wade Bowl. Yeah. Yeah. And right now, I, I do not think that you can just do an only loss. Right now, we're at the point in the season where I think you need to have something to hang your hat on. But here's where I think the voters won't respect it. Dagum SMU. I would put SMU out and I will have SMU outside of the top 25. But what, what does SMU's profile look like right now? I don't know. Standing. The, the game they played against that issue looks better today. The, the scoreboard, you know, result was not impressive. I think they're, they're, their, their biggest win of value is Florida State. They did not look good against Boston College. They won. So I'm not gonna throw a lot of weather game. I didn't really see it. Cause I know there was some rain in Texas. It was. Yeah. It was a little, a little bit. But here's the big key for SMU, like an honest, like good thing from what we've seen over the last couple of weeks. Clean game. Turnovers have become such an issue for SMU over the last couple of weeks. It was a clean game. And even with the, even with the weather, Mason McKenzie was trying his best. I mean, he's just little engine that could out there, trying to figure out a way to get it done. But just, just absolutely could not. I'm looking at the bottom. I think Pat and our doozy will get his wish granted. Five and no with the road win over Virginia Tech. Couple other power conference wins. I don't know if you should jump ahead of everyone, but it is so, so probable that a ton of voters saw the end of that game, winning the game with your backup quarterback. I could see I've got them checking in at 25. I've got Kentucky falling out. Despite the win. I bet you they keep Kentucky in, but the margins are so close. Kentucky was not solidly in. Like they could have gotten got by Wisconsin, which looks pretty in control against Michigan state. So Michigan state and South Carolina, are you more impressed by coming back from 17 points at South Carolina or just going wired to wire putting Michigan state in a locker? That'll be a matter of flavor, a matter of choice right there. I mean, Wisconsin's win got worse because Penn State followed it up with the Northwestern loss. Whereas Kentucky has two road wins. That's something. SEC teams, which let's be real. Texas A&M because we thought it was going to be good in South Carolina will probably move the needle more than Penn State and Michigan state wins. I think Kentucky holds on. You think Kentucky holds on the other teams that you're going to mean you got a lot of great candidates that are all around their Northwestern, you know, might like a word in that range. We talked about the Duke Blue Devils last week. Wake just added another thunderous win. There are another team that's right there. Minnesota, which is now four and one. And you know, you've got the win against Michigan, the win against Washington. A lot of teams all in that range, but UCLA, they were off. I don't see them moving out. Boise State mostly handled business against Utah State. Houston, I don't know, man, the Cougs did not have a fantastic showing in that early slate. Look, UCF tackled extremely well in the first half. Like Houston was scheming some guys open and UCF just, Houston didn't make anybody miss. UCF just got guys to the ground, like didn't allow like the run after catch explosives. And then did you see a score in the second half? I don't think did it was early. No, it was 27 0 after half time. Okay. Yeah. In the first half, Houston lost a fumble and had to turn over on downs and was scoreless. Chip, do you have BYU going up or down? Thank God. Mostly hanging tight, like right there, around eight, nine, they could be they could be like right behind Ole Miss still splitting the Ole Miss LSU. Oh, I've got Alabama jumping up to five. That changes a lot of the math around there. I think the Crimson Todd are going to be like we were saying, moving a little bit closer to the Georgia Texas range in terms of the way that people view the SEC. And I think they guess reflected in the polls with the move, which might like Ohio State falls back, but you didn't fall back. You just got jumped. I'm assuming your top three is Texas Georgia Notre Dame. Correct. Do you think there's any chance Alabama can jump Miami for four as well? Yes, I do. I don't think they will because when I was looking at the voting points gap last week, Miami was little bit, 1501 to 1581 for the Miami Notre Dame gap, 1501 to 1465. Alabama a solid 200 voting points last week. So that if for 69 voters to make up 200 voting points, you'd have to have some pretty a lot of very strong opinions changing for all of that gap to be made up. Okay. Do you have Iowa in? No. Okay. Iowa out. So you've got Iowa and Kentucky falling out who else? Just those two. That's it. Yeah. Wow. It's a prediction. That's why I wanted to say with the SMU part, with the Houston part, there are teams that I would slide out, but I'm projecting that they won't because they had enough of a cushion in terms of overall ballot representation, but anything 20 down is basically anything after Tennessee from a voting points perspective. Anything after Tennessee is pretty much fair game. Look, I'm glad Tom brought up the BYU thing. I think it's crazy. They're at 10 when their wins our Arizona TCU and Colorado State with Colorado State's backup quarterback, but it's just not the week to bump in yet. Like we'll have time. Yeah. What about Texas tech? Probably going to drop a little bit at least not like intentionally, but I could see them losing points. I just saw I was looking at it and I was putting myself in the voters shoes and we were just talking about that Florida Mississippi State Missouri run. You can't look at Texas tech whose best win is by two points against Houston and say that that team has done enough to be able to say like, oh, they're definitely ahead of Mississippi State, Missouri and Florida. So I think that they're going to end up dropping maybe a couple spots just in a general reshuffling of those teams between 10 and 20. It could also depend, too. I don't know how many people would have watched them tonight at Colorado. Because like if a lot of the voters look at that final score and see 29 to seven, they'll be like, oh, okay, but it was a much uglier game than that. And zero yard picks six. Yeah, like really, really portuses by Isaac Wilson in second half, but like under a lot of pressure and Colorado had some drops. Did you guys see the Colorado drive chart in the second half? No. All right. It was was not pretty, but that's going to be the paid server lock and special. Probably. Pretty good. So after half time they had they had two, three, four, they had seven possessions, interception, interception, interception, punt, interception, turnover on downs, turnover on downs. Wow. It's not a pretty bad second half chip. This segment next week is going to be insane after having to sort, it's no, it'll be better. Next week is sneaky awesome. Like we don't have a great depth of like amazing games, but like the undercard next week is fantastic. Are you going to be okay? Are you got me? I'm excited. Baseball playoffs are still happening. I'm worried that you're not going to have anything on your main screen. We. We. We. We.
we had to like midweek little league games this week. This weekend of college ball. Look, it's over. There were some enjoyable games. It's not a particularly memorable weekend of college football. All right. It was it was memorable enough for that re-ranking the top 25 sponsored by Madelo while the rankings may change from week to week. Madelo will always be at the top of our list as the perfect companion for a college football Saturday. Remember, college football season is Mo Delo season. Shout out to Michael in the chat who are our old friend who said that the Sarah McLaughlin special should be Pates 2019 LSU is 2026 Florida take. Wait, what? Pate was saying that if Florida like the way that their offense is playing, if they went in one today that like you'd have to consider the 2026 Florida offense to be like the 2019 LSU offense. It's not a good day for podcasters in general. What would we do? Well, Pate had his 2019 LSU take club in his face. Brandon Walker watched his beloved Bulldogs get absolutely crushed in front of him and then I had to watch Purdue beat Illinois on homecoming. Yeah, I guess compared to that. Brandon Walker. I mean, I mean, you had a great day. It was a banner day in Chapel Hill. Closest March in first Notre Dame, 2026. We can keep this up. Let's see if we're going more podcasters, Ty Hilden brand, watch Penn State lose the Northwestern in person, right? In person, Dan Rubenstein had to watch Ty Hilden brand, watch Penn State lose the Northwestern in person. Do you guys have San Diego State Texas state on? No. We didn't turn this on. It was 17 to three. Now, it's 24/17 the other way. Oh, somebody got over the mumps. Modern medicine is winning out in the second half. Um, what else is CW? Okay. Oh, Face on Brandon got benched. Permanently, I thought like I thought he came back in. George McIntyre looked okay. You know, moving, moving the ball, but obviously it was the Dishonned Bishop show. They handed the ball off about 65 times. He ran for about 300 yards and nine touchdowns. But, um, you know, just an interesting, interesting development for for Tennessee's offense. Josh Hypole decided to let the young man come and come and sit for a little bit. You know, take a look. You mass used up all of its minutes, men. That's, that was a fun ride. I'm not going to do that ride. It's not over. Like I know it's probably Western and Toledo in the Mac. But it's not like 100% over what Western did not look good against Buffalo today. Toledo, the ride is certainly not over, but it would be the inability to move the football against Eastern Michigan today might suggest that we've what water might be finding its level for for the pop gun. And Eastern Michigan that is not too an O in the Mac, by the way. They got Creighton. Uh, bowling green. Oh, I mean, I forgot about the money line sprinkle. I'm just thinking about the horror of, you know, waking up tomorrow and being like, we are supposed to be the class of this conference. We are trying to pay 30 million dollars to join another conference and we're losing at home to bowling green. There's no, there's no injuries offsetting in real life. And my Ohio is just broken entry wise, I think, like they're just that banged up. It sucks for them, but Cal is in a very bad spot. They lost 39 to 31 at UNLV on the mothership. Yeah. Did you see Fram Brown almost blow it against Yukon too? Yes, I did. Yeah, that was unfortunate. Um, I was thinking this week, man, are we going to have like eight ACC openings? Yeah. Like Fram, Georgia Tech, NC State, FSU, Clemson, Cal, like there's got to be, I started counting. It's like, if we have like total chaos scenario, we won't because like these teams have to be each other, like somebody has to win these games, but we might have like half the league turnover in theory. I think they'll be too chicken. I think they'll to pull the plug or just like just in the, in general, the, there will not be, there will be a lot more of what you were talking about with Florida State. It'll get just enough to talk themselves in to keeping it going for one more year. I would pull the plug on Cal now. Like I know that sounds insane, but like that, that looks like such a disaster from like the high rings and just how disorganized they look. Like I would be shocked if he gets a turn around there. Yep. I, I need to do some digging there. I don't know what's going on inside, but the performance is, the performance has gone from not meeting the expectations preseason to objectively bad to the team is too talented to play this bad. What's wrong? Not great. Let's see. Oh, salute to our troops. Air Force gets the, gets the first one. On that commie in the commander in chief trophy. Air Force gets the first leg up 14 to nine. That was a, that was, it was always great to see. Jordan told him to throw that, throw out the record books and they did. That's right. She did. She did. She also told them the overflow. I don't like the option. I believe in the option. I mentioned that they literally practice against it all day every day. Yeah. See, anything else from the notebook that we've not gotten a chance to hit yet? Do you want me to talk about Illinois? Sure. They suck. That stinks. And that's really all I have to say about that. Just, I mean, turns out, firing or defensive coordinator in the middle of the season didn't really fix the defense and the offense did not have a very good game. And if the offense isn't perfect, this team's not going to win. And also like the over, I had the overlocked up over 61 and a half. There were like four or five punts in this game and they still only scored 41 points. Just a mess. Just a mess. It's very sad. I would argue that that is the worst loss of the Bielama era. The only other one that even comes close is the 2023 loss to Purdue. Was that the year two? That was the year after they won eight games when they came back to Earth and went five and seven. Yeah. So like it was actually his third year, but it was a and like that Purdue team I think finished four and eight and they beat us by like 20 something. So yeah, not happy. I know Colorado State fired their DC in the first quarter of the game, which is wild. But are we sure boys he's a lock to win the pack 12? Does Oregon State is looking very fun? Oregon State has now scored on Houston. They moved it on Texas Tech and they're just like destroying everybody else who's not a P-14. They appear to have like a P-4 level receiver like really good player. I mean, I know boys he has some guys as well clearly. And if you think about like who are like the next range of quarterbacks for these P-14s to target, Arkansas kind of has to be on that list. He's pretty damn good. Like we might have an interesting pack 12 race. When two weeks ago, we thought like no chance. And this is like in this era, like you look at it, like if you have a head coach opening, you hire Jamarka Shepherd. Yeah. He brings that consent. He brings LaGurie. He's got to like if they keep playing like this, it sucks for Oregon State because they're having a super ton of fun with this offense right now. But odds are they keep doing it and you're not going to have any of these guys back next year for Harjimmi Rogers shoot. All right. So did you get to watch Iowa State West Virginia? I was tracking. I did not get my eyes on a snap. So I didn't want to like speak to it beyond notice it like every single time that I looked up, the score continued to change and I was tracking it. What do we have five total touchdowns for the Iowa State running back? Right? Couple rushing and then two half back passes. I was kind of bananas. So yeah, great win for Jammi Rogers. But I had the most exciting game of the day. Probably. Probably. I mean, I would have to go and watch it. But 45-42 with a billion lead changes. Generally, yes, I would consider that exciting. I told you I told you all Dell ain't messing around 42 to 10. Hell no. Love it. Love it. If only they weren't in the same division as James Madison. Oh, that was a question. So James Madison and North Dakota State, that would be your other playoff contenders. If you want to talk about are we sure?
Boise's a lock in the pack 12. You would extend that up, but North Dakota State could go see in the mountain west. They do play. They could go 12 enough. Yeah, but I think Boise has two better games. Like their wins would be better. Like crushing Memphis and playing Oregon close are better than any games that JMU or North Dakota State have. So I think one lost Boise clears both of them. Yeah, JMU's just mean 45-17 winners against Marshall and they have just been pounding teams all season long, 5-0 now on the season. Today was the first time that JMU was trailed all year. There we go. I did not watch Texas A&M Mark and saw. Oh, I watched like five minutes of it and I got a small group chat update for my NM buddy on it. Um, we still suck essentially. I mean, I tried to watch it, but A&M was in the camo, so I couldn't see him. South Florida lose into temple. I love the temple quarterback. This is a second temple game that I've now watched this year because I had the under on it, so I had it on one of the screens. He's not like, you know, I don't love him because he's good. If I watch them again, he can scoot. I watched him against Toledo and I watched him today. He's just, he's a fun quarterback, Johnny Shepard. He had like the long 34-yard touchdown run to win the game for temple. He's just like, he's one of those. Anything is going to happen. Anytime I drop back to play and yeah, he's good. If you have a chance to watch temple, watch him. And like that, USF defense is good legitimately. It's offensive garbage, but like, the defense is good. Um, all right, Cincinnati fans are mad in the chat. Like, because of what? Because they're down 17 to nothing. Is that why they're mad? I guess. Like, I don't, you can't go. Is it their first loss of the year? Yeah, it will be, but I was it on this show or the other one that I, hey, long way to go. Long way to go. Yeah, also Baylor is killing airs on a state. Yeah. And Kenny is no longer talking with the play sheet up. He's just like, if you're a lip reader, go back and watch this because he just let him fly. Dunning matter. It's like, it's like 43-13 years of a race. Yeah. All right, we are scheduled to be back with you on Monday 11 a.m. Eastern time for us to get into a pun further review. One last look back at the absolutely wild ups and downs of week five. FAQs
USC's defense struggled with poor tackling, especially on plays involving receivers and running backs. They failed to bring down players like Jamal Roberts, allowing him to gain yardage, and had multiple incidents where players were not pushed out of bounds, indicating a lack of defensive discipline and execution.
Missouri dominated Florida with a strong defensive performance, particularly on the defensive line, which recorded 11 tackles for loss. Florida's offensive line was thoroughly dismantled, leading to a 1.7-yard average per rush and a total of just 13 yards on 12 carries by Jayden Ball, who was effectively neutralized.
Alabama's victory showcased their offensive dominance, scoring 56 points on the road against a ranked team—a record in Alabama history. The game highlighted Keenan Russell's effectiveness as a quarterback, who consistently found ways to move the ball despite defensive pressure, making him one of the most dangerous players in college football.
Ohio State overcame Iowa with a strong offensive performance, largely due to quarterback Jeremiah Smith's explosive play. Despite Iowa’s aggressive defensive efforts, including double and triple coverage, Smith continued to produce, with 11 catches for 206 yards and two touchdowns, showing the difficulty of containing him.
No, the field goal attempt was ruled incomplete after a fan video showed the ball clearly wide of the uprights. Officials missed the call, and the kick was not reviewed, resulting in a missed opportunity that significantly impacted Virginia Tech’s chances of advancing in the conference standings.
Florida's performance against Missouri raised concerns about their consistency, especially in defense. Their inability to stop the run and their poor defensive execution in multiple games have led to questions about whether they are a top-tier team, despite their recent wins.
