The Cover 3 podcast delivers a comprehensive analysis of key college football games, highlighting Oregon’s strong performance against USC despite Dante Moore’s injury and Dylan Rayola’s effective stepping in. The Ducks showcased depth, resilience, and improved execution, particularly in the second half, while USC struggled with defensive lapses and poor tackling, especially in red zones. Meanwhile, Florida’s dominant win over Ole Miss marks a turning point, elevating them to a top-10 team and signaling a strong playoff push. Tennessee’s defense showed signs of growth against Texas, applying pressure and forcing key stops, though the offense failed to sustain momentum. The broader narrative reflects a more balanced college football season, with top teams now competing closely and no single program dominating. The podcast also emphasizes player development, coaching decisions, and the evolving nature of team competitiveness. Georgia and Ohio State remain in contention, with Georgia’s consistency and depth standing out, while Ohio State’s defensive line and injury concerns are noted as areas for improvement. The discussion underscores a shift from a few dominant national powers to a more competitive, unpredictable top tier, where team performance is increasingly defined by resilience, depth, and in-game adjustments rather than early-season dominance.

I've got $3, exactly $3 for one head coach here on this fine week for Saturday. I have plenty on my notepad about the value of one second or, you know, like a minute and 21 seconds or 91 yards in the final two minutes and apparently judging by the matching sets of eyes from both Bud Elliott and Tom Fernelli. Do we have something going on in Missouri, Mississippi state as we are down to the final 51 seconds of that game? Tom, stay up in this one, 11, 25 PM Eastern Tom. We told you we were going off Oregon, USC, ducks coming out with a big win in the Coliseum, going to get to that Dante Moore in a little bit. But is there something right here in the moment that we need to address? Well, I mean, Chip, I don't want to piss on your intro, but like there's six seconds left. Yeah. And Missouri's pretty much got like a probably out. It's third and 12. We might see a short pass here to set up an easier hail Mary, but they're kind of in hail Mary situation, right? They have just done like a seven yard run in bounce clock runs and like a six yard pass in bounce clock runs. We're going to have Hail Mary heave to the end zone on a rollout. Mississippi state is a knockdown guy and ball game is over game. All right. Mississippi state 31, Missouri, 24. Big result for the Bulldogs is they improved to four and over all. Jeff Levy, man, it's a great story. We can maybe start to peel apart some more of that as the evening goes on. And as we work our way around college football, but a reminder, as always that tonight's instant reaction show is brought to you by Odelo, our thanks to Madelo for sponsoring this and all of the instant reaction shows throughout this college football season. Madelo will also be sponsoring our re ranking the top 25 later on. Well, among the changes in the top 25 will be adjustments, spoiler alert two way movement one team moves up another team moves down don't think either team is moving out in the wake of Oregon's win in the Coliseum, but the headline here is a scary hit injury departure for Dante Moore, Dylan Rayola comes in and does a does a good job of helping that team, you know, get through to the win, but am I am I too stuck in the moment, Tom, to linger on this injury, what was a cheap shot and now like massive questions moving forward. And oh, sorry, it's cheap shot too far. No. Okay. No, I he had a couple. What do you have like two clear steps? Yeah. Yeah, I had I screen shot at it like Dante Moore had left his feet. He was in the air beginning his slide and Desmond Stevens was squared up, head up. Yeah. He hadn't even lower to start at the beginning. He hadn't even begun to lower his body yet. He knew what he was doing. The game was already a little bit chippy too, you know, I mean, that's sure. Like it's, and then it's disappointing for that. I will also say like the idea that he didn't know what he was doing kind of goes out the window when he celebrated what he did. You can't really argue he didn't know what he was doing there. There's there. I definitely heard a little bit of the defense of the defense, you know, like the people like, well, what is he supposed to do? And you know, I hear that, but just to your point, Tom, if we're going to judge this by everything and in summation, it's it's a rough go of it for Dante Moore. Obviously our thoughts are with him. He was taken to a hospital, initial indications both on the broadcast and elsewhere that there's some of those first scary updates that you're looking for. It feels like we got positive news. Did you all catch anything that I did, but I don't know like I have to judge Oregon moving forward. And I was like, I think Dylan Rial has got to be the quarterback for a little bit, right? I, I, I don't know like it's, I assume it's a head thing, right? Or a neck thing, like I'm assuming it's a question. Yeah. If we, anyway, so I am not a doctor. I have, I have, I volunteered to be your, your, your search committee, I have your search firm. I volunteered to be lots of things for you. I'm not going to volunteer to be your doctor. So I don't know what his thing. I do think that Oregon responded tremendously, the way that it finished, even if it didn't finish with the touchdown before half time, I thought finishing with points was knowing that you were getting the ball in the second half and then being able to start the second half. We really kind of take control of this game, make USC chase it a little bit. I don't think Dylan Rialo was perfect. I don't know if it's fair to expect him to be perfect, but I think that there's a, there's a vibes aspect to this. So I'll let my vibes corner get out of the way. So tell me from your eyes, what did your eyes see about what Oregon did well tonight? Well, they protected really well. And honestly, like Rialo got the ball out pretty much on time, like much better run after catch stuff than they had had really feel like the first three, four weeks of the season. Receivers fought for the ball a little bit better. They found the tight end better and the run game was working. So pretty much everything worked for the ducks on offense tonight. Rialo's stats were crazy too. In the moment, I was like, it looks, feels like he's playing pretty well. They're getting run for the catch. He's throwing some downfield stuff later in the game early on. It felt like very kind of package plays, screens, short stuff. And then he gives Cory a more chance to go up and fight for that ball late in the game for the score to ice it. He just seemed like he was pretty much on time, you know, it was great. Yeah. According to the step broadcast box score, we're going to 214 yards after the catch in this game. Like Dylan did this Dylan did Dylan stuff. He hit some deep throws. He missed some throws, but he threw a lot of short screens and he let his playmakers go make plays afterwards. And that's what he kind of did it Nebraska. It's just he's got much better playmakers around him and he had some good players at Nebraska. He's got much better players with him around the ducts defensively. I thought in the first half, Oregon's past rush look good and then it kind of disappeared. So that for me is still a concern going forward, but overall, I think this was clearly the cleanest and best game that Oregon has played against an FBS team to this point so far this year. And I mean, one of the things we talked about when we, when we were talking about Oregon before the year began, one of the reasons they were the favorites, at least that I mentioned was unlike so many other programs, they actually have depthit quarterback and we talked, hey, if there's an injury to Dante more, they've got somebody who they can come in and they don't have to just kind of turtle up. They can still kind of do most of the same things they do. And that's exactly what happened for USC, what's, what, where does the blame in the criticism lie here? Where what stands out? I, I thought my ABA was like played pretty darn well and it made a lot of really good throws. Their top two targets tonight were freshman, right? Like, yeah. It felt like their young guys were the, like, young guys in QB were the best players on the field. Oregon's D-line showed up more, like, physically, I feel like in this game than they had in prior games too. Like, they just, it seemed like they, like, you felt them more and that they were making more impressive. Like, Bear Alexander played big and played hard for a lot of the game. I, I'm already washed and had like a number of like, like, USC would move the ball some and then like, it was getting critical stop, you know, in, in the red zone, force a field goal attempt, you know, get, get a fork down, stop. And I, it just felt like they were more physical, like, they were impacting USC's offensive line. A lot more than USC was impacting Oregon's offensive line. Yeah. For me, like, bigger picture, I mean, your defense, you gave up 504 yards, gave up 7.4 per play. And again, I just, we talked, Dylan Raola is not your typical backup quarterback, but like, your USC, you're undefeated on the year, I wrote about it this week, like, Oregon's coming to town. It has lost to Oklahoma State, it barely survived Boise State. It has not been nearly the team that we thought it was going to be like, and then their quarterback is hurt in the first half and goes out for the rest of the game. Like if you weren't going to beat Oregon tonight, when the hell are you ever going to beat Oregon? Like, where are you going to finally get over that, huh? Because you're offensively, you played fine for the most part. You didn't play good enough, but defensively, again, you know, they were, they were saying when they were giving up all those points to San Jose State and Fresno, it was our third and four stringers. But then we saw with Rutgers last week, we saw what happened again tonight. They just don't get stops. They had all those yards after the catch because USC can't tackle. It's just a huge problem. It's even with Gary Patterson. They had six red zone possessions. They scored on all of them, you know, they had 34 points on their six red zone possessions. Like, you didn't get stops at all, and it killed you and it's the same old story for USC. They look great against teams are better than and then when they play teams.
they're trying to be on that level of, they look much worse. - Do you think that this USC team has, 'cause there will be other opportunities against quality opponents this season for the Trojans? We looked at USC as a team that was dangerous and interesting with an excellent quarterback and a lot of talented youth movement, but maybe one that wouldn't end up in the playoff because they did have to play so many teams. So now let's take that next part of the question. If before the year you looked at USC as a team that might not make the playoff but was dangerous enough to beat anybody, they've gone through one of those games that we had circled, the game against Oregon as one of the like, well, they could mess up Oregon season and they didn't. So do you feel any more or less confident in USC as a team that even if it doesn't end up top 30 in the big 10, still could end up picking off somebody in a way that really disrupts the overall picture in that conference. Who do you qualify as somebody? Yeah, right. Like, I think USC can go on the run and beat Penn State. I don't know if that counts. I don't think I can let, after I say that can't count. I mean, I will, Indiana has not looked incredible. I'm sure we'll talk about that at some point in the show so maybe they could go on the road to beat Indiana, but I don't know, like. Can you state Michigan both are either of them somebody? Michigan, I would say no. They don't play Michigan though. Oh, that's right. Yeah, no. The games, they don't stay in Indiana. Hell, they might like, I don't know, it's just, they run into a physical team and they get beat up. Yeah. And that's really not going to change hell. Based on what I've seen from UCLA, UCLA might beat them up. It's possible. I look, I don't think they're going to put up more of a fight than Maryland did. Well, yeah, you, the three of us would put up more of a fight than Maryland did. Wow. Look, I don't think they had much of a case to go at nine and three because they're not con with so bad. I really think they had to go 10 and two. I think the odds are going 10 and two are really slim. Obviously, like you, you can drop one more and you have what, one, two, three. Every remaining game is technically, like, probably in theory, loosable at least. Like Maryland at home should not be loosable with the way they played today. But it's like what, six, seven remaining difficult games. Yeah, but all, I mean, like, Wisconsin looks more difficult. That defense looks real. Yeah, the defense looks real. I'll agree with you. I think Indiana is, yeah. If they can get to the Ohio State Indiana turn, which has a bi-week in between it, without taking another loss, then yeah, maybe they could pick somebody off. But I don't know. I'm not, I'm just not enthused. I thought they ran the ball well a little bit early. I thought the late Jade Mive did a good job of finding a lot of open space that didn't seem to be there. But just it wasn't, wasn't an overly dominant showing it anytime. I haven't felt, how about this? I have not felt. We've had four full games of USC football this year. Yeah. I haven't felt like they're world beaters. 'Cause they're not. Oh, yeah. Like I, I will say, when they storm back to tie it, I kind of thought, all right, ooh, this might be it. Like, there's some chance that, you know, obviously we're all coming in. You know, maybe he turns into a pumpkin here. You know, like he, he's looked good so far. Maybe USC's defense will figure out something. Just gotten a three in a out. They go down, they score. And then immediately, Oregon just comes back and just shoves it on. It's like, okay. All right. Yeah, they're perfectly fine top 20 team. They're not a top 10 team. They're not a top five team. What about the Oregon side? I mentioned the vibes perspective. And this is a little bit of the human side. And like, I'm an, I'm an apologist undoubtedly. But, you know, you see that moment and we know how intense Dan landing is about this program and how much he really pours everything into those relationships and the steadiness and the consistency of messaging. Watching him NBC's broadcast had him loving up those players who were hurt and man, they were scared. They were, they were in a rough spot. I think some credit goes to him. I said it was from the vibes perspective. I'm not gonna try to spin this into the season turned around. But I thought there was something to be said for an experienced group who I and others criticized for underperforming through the opening weeks of this season. Really haven't, hey, it was a good check Saturday. As you should have. You know, and they pulled together and they rallied and that was leaning on their experience in a way that has me backing off of any notion that this is a Penn State 2025 story. I don't know if they'll, they might not make the play off. Okay, they're not a perfect team. But I do think that in terms of this being a season of underperformance and disappointment, I'm gonna say that the response was enough for me to at least, you know, shade away from that kind of inclination. You know, any other final words on the ducks, what you saw and what could become and moving forward. I'm looking forward to that you see, like, you know. Oh, baby. I mean, yeah, I've Chesney wants revenge, but Chesney remembers the playoff. And that's in two weeks, right? Yeah, they're off next week. Yeah, they're off neck, which is great for the Dante Moore side. I mean, if this, you know, this, this is a, this is a little bit fortunate on, on the, on, I don't want to say injury luck side when your star quarterback gets knocked out. Do you guys want to clip farm? Dante Moore NFL draft Dante Moore NFL draft decision. No, no, are we sure that Dante Moore gets the starting job back? No, Dylan rail played very well. The night is Dylan rail is the new starter of the Oregon ducks. Let's hear your thoughts. Line up the phone lines. Like, I, I suspect they'll give it back to Dante Moore, but I don't know that. And Riala played better tonight than Moore has played in any game this year. That was a real game. They looked better with Riala. Yeah, they had with Moore at any point. I, and this is, this is coming from the world's number one, Dylan Rayola Hater. They looked better with him than they have with Moore so far. Yeah. Dante Moore safety issue, I'm not, I try, I don't want to laugh at that, but that's not no. Wilson, we'll see you moving forward. I, who knows, maybe, maybe that was there. Maybe that was their Super Bowl. Maybe Dante Moore got knocked out in Oregon, just showed us their best game. And it might be tough to channel that again. Who knows, right? Maybe, but a lot, a lot to be able to look at. You do have to like who they get at home, though. Oh, I do know what I like, but forget their schedule. I like Evan Stewart. I like Decorian. Yes, do you know who can catch Dylan Rayola's throws Oregon's wide receivers? You know, who couldn't Nebraska's wide receivers? I mean, this is like, and Johnson the tight end. And Jamborey Johnson was playing out of his mind in that game. And he'll rent, he'll rent the heck out of the ball. Yeah, yeah, one, the one Johnson catch that didn't even count because of the penalty. Yeah, the one that came back. Yeah, oh, yeah. No, I just, I, the reasons to like Oregon, I think are still that they've got 10 NFL draft picks on the team. Right. You know, most of the time they take the field, they're going to be able to have more talent than the opponents. So we will get to the rankings, movement, the projections, Oregon, USC, a little bit later in Medellos reranking the top 25. Tom, is it, is it karma? Is it karma in Ann Arbor? I mean, what an amazing factoid to have a team in the Michigan Wolverines, who have both won and lost in the final second at home by the end of September. In 2026. I mean, I'm not, the problem with karma is that that would imply Michigan did something wrong by beating Western Michigan. It was the refer, it was the official football justice. I will say poetic justice, poetic justice, thanks that Michigan lost our hard for me. I appreciate that. Let's, you know, I'm here to help. Yeah. That was a, that's tough because like the craziest thing about all of that is I thought that was Bryce Underwood's best game of the year. I thought he played very well. I thought Michigan offensively played well for the most part. They only scored 20 point or 19 points because you know, you faced Iowa and then they had the one interception at like the two yard line, which I don't know if that was Bryce or I don't know if it was the receiver ran the wrong route watching it live. It seemed like the receiver ran the wrong route or at least Bryce thought he was running at very different route. But overall, I thought Michigan looked good, but Iowa did the thing Iowa does, man. They had the kick return for the touchdown, which was the really their only points for most of the game. They just kind of hung around, hung around, Hank Brown made some throws. That was the craziest thing to me. Like, he finished 21 at 35, 227 yards to touchdowns, including the game winner to Van der Zee in the corner. That was a great ball. That was a incredible ball. The two crazy passes that got tipped up in the air and then like caught on on ricochets. Not really repeatable. That felt, that felt like the karma piece. Yes. It was like, okay, yeah, but yeah, I just, that was.
You got to Iowa, man, like that just happens sometimes. I was shocked that they came back in one. I will also say process wise, I'm happy Kirk got the win. Kirk was obviously very, very happy he got it. But he did not deserve it after kicking that field goal. And I won't say that I was surprised that he opted to kick that field goal when they were down 19 to a 13 to try to cut it to 19 to 16 or was it 1914? I can't remember. It was trying to cut it, you know, he's down to touchdown. He kicked the field goal with like two minutes left. And they missed it. They were able to get the ball back. And obviously they go down at score. Still terrible decision in my opinion by parents to do that. They got away with it. But I will also say that I think Michigan kicking a field goal when it was I think 13 to three, when they were like a fourth and goal to four yard line, third quarter, also a terrible decision. Like you should have just gone for it and gone for the touch. And I understand the thought that hey, it's Iowa. If we go up by, you know, seven or whatever, they're not going to come back and win the way our defense is playing. But if you don't get the touchdown, they still have to go 96 yards. So I thought that was kind of a crappy decision by winning ham. So I think both coaches made bad decisions in this game, but Iowa got away with them. I agree. Would you make a Michigan? I like really I thought their offense looked like much better than it had for any sustained stretch throughout the year. Like underwood seemed to be on time a lot more. Iowa got like, they have the critical fork down stop, right? They got the one interception, you know, and you lost to a team that scored one offensive touchdown. Like that's, that's pretty embarrassing, honestly, like to lose that game at home. You know, like you're a team you, you got the break against Western. You got the win over Oklahoma, which has a good defense and obviously their offense is kind of a disaster. Like, that's a game you needed to win. And that's, that's going to sting for Michigan fans for sure. Like that, that's going to keep you out of the playoff almost certainly now. You know what I, I thought they had a real shot to go at 9 and 3. And now I don't think you're going to go 9 and 3. Like if I tell you before this game starts, that Michigan's going to have like 430 yards of offense, right? You're going to hold Iowa to 2.4 yards per carry on the ground. And you're going to turn the ball over once, but Iowa is going to punt it right back to you after a 3 and out. There's no way in hell you think that Michigan loses this game. Yeah. Yeah. I can't even call him Iowa because to watch the game on a down-to-down basis, it doesn't feel Iowa, but she's got out Iowa. Got, but it is weird for me. I can't, like Iowa has a quarterback that can make good throws. He makes some bad ones, but typically, all that Iowa quarterbacks do is make bad throws. This one makes some good ones. I think I have receivers this year, though. Yeah. Well, DS is good, a lot different. Yeah. Votemys good, Van der Zee is kind of coming into his own. Yeah. Yeah. Um, the, uh, you mentioned the emotions there. How about first win on the road against a ranked Big 10 team since? 2020 or 2021. Was it the Penn State win? That's an AP ranked team at LSU. First win against a ranked Big 10 team is 2015. Wow. It's been that long. Iowa, first road win versus ranked Big 10 team since 2015 at number 20 Northwestern. Wait, and I know that I will play at LSU. Does that mean I'm in a game, yeah? Okay. Yeah. I was trying to, like, I'm. Oh, yeah. Not, not, not, but, uh, against LSU. Another thing I bring up here that is makes this even crazier. What if I also told you before the game that both Andrew Martian, JJ, you can it would have over a hundred yards receiving, right? That's the thing. They're going down to down basis. I saw enough that should have provided a lot more than what they got. But the, the kickoff return was so big. Yes. But I'm saying for Michigan, offensively, I saw enough successful, offensive Michigan football that there should have been more here. It should not have been this close. And that one red zone turnover, even though I wouldn't get points out of it. If you score there, seven points, they'll probably win the game. Yeah. Sure. Uh, do you guys have Minnesota on? Yeah. Is that peacock? It is on Fox. Yeah. Fox Fox. Okay. Cool. Yeah. Minnesota better than Washington so far. Goodness gracious. I tell you what, the team that was back to back 26th and voting points might not be cracking in. Even the five points are going to five teams are going to fall out for some reason. I got the feeling the Huskies might not be, uh, might not be that last team in. As I, as we might have thought, we'll, uh, we'll get to that in so much more. But coming up on the other side, we continue our spin with a sharp look, a magnifying glass. Listen, the, the buzz is great. It's real. The gators are chomping. What, what is the real ceiling for this Florida team? All that and more next back here on the cover three podcast. Jane ball, three touchdowns, another 100 yard rushing performance. He is putting himself in the same kind of historical conversations based on the way he started this year with Emmett Smith and Fred Taylor. What do you come? How many games Florida might be favorite in? I know that's how crazy over some of y'all, but can, can you find me a third game in which Florida will be a dog? No, they might be top 10 team by tomorrow. They're, they're going to be favored in 10. There's no might. What's up? The weird happens. That's, yeah, that's my headline. Top 10 for the first time since 2021 that John Summer all in one month has done what Billy Napier could not do in an entire tenure. Yeah. And that's make Florida top 10 team. They're back. Florida's back. They looked like they jumped on them immediately. Like they, they, they, they ran the ball with bot early established that got some good play action stuff. Worked in the tight ends. They didn't allow Ole Miss to hit the explosives over the top. They kind of dared Ole Miss to run the ball. Ole Miss run game this year has not been very good. They let their front take care of the run. Ole Miss got some stuff. And then like ultimately, you know, I think the crowd noise affected them some as well. Like we talked about in big game breakdown. It was the first time that they were going to go on the road this year. Obviously like the Ole Miss or the, the Louisville game was a neutral site. So, you know, how would they do that? And they just, they didn't allow Ole Miss to jump on right early on with, with, with any kind of explosive plays. And because of that, they relied like, you know, kind of game stated to themselves. And then they started hitting some explosives in the past game. It was probably like exactly like Summer all wanted that thing to go. Yeah, I'm kind of in love with this team. They're fun. They're really fun to watch. Yep. And you've got Jaden Baw, who's going for 142 and 3. But you've also got Duke Clark, who's going for 126 on 12 carries. Phylo's ball and like they didn't really have to throw the ball at all in this game. They did. But when they did, they were efficient. They were good about it. But just like they imposed their damn will on Ole Miss. And it was, you know, something to see like this is Ole Miss defense. It obviously hasn't been great to start the year. I mean, they gave up points to Louisville. They gave up some points to LSU, but like they were just manhandled. And yeah, part of it is, as we expected coming off of that game last week, there was probably going to be an emotional letdown. It's hard to get ready for these games two weeks in a row after that. And you're going on the road to a tough environment that has really juiced up for its opportunity to take down a top five team. But they like Florida could have been a team that we, you know, not entirely ready for the situation, not really prepared for the situation. They could have given Ole Miss time to get themselves into the game, but they didn't. Like Bud Tutton. They jumped on it from the start and it was done. Like I know Ole Miss made that charge in the second half of things started getting track shooting, but at no point did any of you guys ever really think Ole Miss had a chance to win the game? No, 17 to 6. I thought it was kind of a wrap because I didn't think that they were going to be able to try. If you couldn't score those touchdowns early, the, like to your point about game state, Bud, it's like, oh, you're not going to stop us? Sure. Let's try to, let's try it all day. Yeah, there's a point in like a couple minutes into the third quarter. When Ole Miss came out and scored, I was like, okay, like, I do want to see how Florida responds to this. I want to see how they counter whatever Ole Miss going to throw Adam as far as second half of adjustments. And they counter it, you know, and then at that point I was like, okay, Florida's got this, you know, pretty sure. Although last week against Auburn, right, like before to kept getting up 17 and Auburn kept coming back and scoring. So I was like, okay, like we kind of have seen this before. Auburn, you know, was going to have a Hail Mary shot to tie that thing last week, obviously. So, you know, I was just very impressed. They just put up like 500 plus yards like every game. You know, like the offense is really, really good. The defense, I don't think is great, right? But I think it's good enough if the offense is going to play like that. Echoes was not nearly as dominant today for Ole Miss as he was against LSU. You know, obviously Auburn doesn't have like impact players on the defensive line this year. So, you know, we'll see how it looks. And I think it'll continue to look really good. Will it look amazing every single week? Probably not.
they're gonna need the defense to keep coming and to get better. But, you know, like, there's just spots on the schedule, like, this is gonna sound crazy. Like, Oklahoma was driving on Georgia with a likely chance to make it 14-7, you know, and then the ball subset of materials hands, and that was all she wrote, it was 21. - Oh, no, I don't think Colin Cocktail party, one of the games of the year is crazy. - No, I'm saying that they have to go to Oklahoma, right? - It's not crazy to think that OU has like a home run, Vennable's defensive effort, ugly's that game up, and all of a sudden, you're in a real fourth quarter fight, you know, so they will need the defense to keep improving if they want to get to where they want to go. But, like, Fylo operates this offense so well, and I gotta say, like, as a null, doesn't box Buster Faulkner feel like more of an NFL off its a coordinator? You know, I just kind of feel like this talent are wasted in college, guys. So, I think he should seriously consider the NFL, like, maybe right now, but certainly this all-- - No, or Tallahassee, my friend. You're going about this all wrong. - Yeah, I don't know, man. - Yeah, no, like Tallahassee. - I don't know. - If you can't hire the $10 million your coach, hire the coordinator and just give him a shot. - I think I'm on the Manidias train. - Oh, ha ha! - Like, I think he's a damn good football coach, you know? Like, Duke wins a ton of games, front office is awesome, you know. Plus, it'd be fun to, like, win with Manidias when Miami couldn't. - Right. - Yeah. - I mean, that's the-- I mean, you want to talk about motivation. I mean, that guy has made a whole, like, two seasons out of motivation, you know? Just like this, he's found the fire and he's lit it under that Duke team through and through. Not a lot for us to pick apart right now, but, you know, things to keep an eye on moving forward. All right, what about the Ole Miss side? I think that you were always aware that your defense was an issue. I think that if you paid, you know, any attention to us discussing this game on big game breakdown, like, oh my gosh, how is Florida the favorite here? It's like, wow, I mean, Ole Miss's defense hasn't been great this year. You know, they won some games, but there are actual objective analytical reasons why they found themselves basically established as the similar team to the Florida Gators heading into this with Homefield, you know, a big home field and a hangover sort of pumping up that betting market spread. But they still have turned it ad-chamblists. Are there any concerns about the offense here? - Well, I think it's important to remember that they did not have Lacey. - Fair. And that has an impact, clearly. I think that Trinidad Chamblists is still really, really good. And Trinidad Chamblist is capable of having a game where, you know, they've got to play Texas on the road. Trinidad is capable of outplaying Arch. They've got to play Georgia. Trinidad is capable of outplaying Gunner. Like, I don't know that they're going to win out because, again, that defense is a problem and it's going to cost them. And when they do lose, it will be because they just can't get stops like today. But I also believe that they are capable of beating anybody too. So I don't know. It's going to be a week-by-week thing with this team. If that defense can figure out a way to get better as the season goes along and you would hope that they can considering that is the background of their head coach, then there's still room to girl here. - I think their main concern today is like, they would have two, right? One, the margin by which they lost to Florida. Like, their eyes are certainly on returning to the playoffs. Like, you know, you hit the whole lawsuit. You got chambles to come back. You got the extra availability. You got them back. Like, their absolute goal, especially if they beat LSU, we got to go to the playoffs. What happened in Louisville today is bad for that case. - Sure. - Like, I really thought if Louisville kept playing well and Louisville wins nine or 10 ball games, then Ole Miss is a lock at nine and three. If Louisville's like an eight and four team and they keep screwing around with the team like Wake Forest, like, I like Jake Digger for a ton, by the way. But like. - Jake Digger for Florida State? - Week four. - Sure. - Separation saturday is just a bunch of bud shops head coach. - I think Digger is an excellent coach. I do. Are they a lock at nine and three now? I still like that chance is because they played a real non-conference game, you know? But, I think like losing by what they lost by, and then the Louisville win looking worse now, they're less of a lock at nine and three in my opinion than they were before. - Yeah, that's fair to say. But it's also in that dead zone where we've had four weeks of results, we're gonna get actual playoff rankings in a month. And then so we're kind of all, you know, speculating and throwing darts to see what kind of Miami Notre Dame decisions will be made on the first rankings at the beginning of November that will then have to be, you know. - Thank you. - And the gumption. What's that one thing about a 12 team playoff? - Ah, the one thing about the 12 team playoff, that nobody, nobody ever gets around to thinking about. So you gotta put 12 teams in. And you know what, Ole Miss at nine and three might be one of the 12 best teams. So you could be in. But if there's other teams that are 10 and two, that have better resumes, then they'll probably get in. - Yeah, I strongly disagree with Ryan and Chad. If Louisville wins 10, Ole Miss is a lock at nine and three, given their schedule. But we'll see. - We will see Vanderbilt. So they are all next week. The Rebels are back in action at Vanderbilt. Follow that up with Missouri home, then at Texas, a little bit later on in October. Is that a positive thing or a negative thing? We could kind of sit here in SEC land. If you want, is there something else that's scratching at you, Tom? Should we talk Texas Tennessee? - Yeah, I think Texas Tennessee is another one here. I think that you mentioned the Oklahoma side of this. There's some Sooner's Dread out there, certainly as well. - Sponded Sooner's fans in the text. - Oof. - Better help for Oklahoma Sooner's fans. - That fumble. - Which one? Be more specific. - Well, I mean, I saw the other one replay. I turned it off at 21-0. I was like, "All right, we're good here." Yeah, that 330 window was so low that I did not need to watch. Like I turned off Vama after I got up 35-3. I turned off Georgia at 21-0. Like there's other games to watch. - Yeah, we had Iowa Michigan going. I mean, boys, he put Western Michigan in a locker. That was pretty helpful for-- - I mean, I wanted to see Michigan State Nebraska. I wanted to see Penn State Wisconsin. Like there are other games that were somewhere in doubt, yeah. Arch, whoever was doing the broadcast, was that McRory doing the broadcast? - No, it was her being-- - It was her being-- - Her being Kirk doing text. - It was her being Kirk, yeah. - Okay, he made a really good point about how Arch seems to bring his eyes down when the rush gets to him. How Jim Knowles, the Tennessee D.C., seemed to know that. And I just couldn't stop watching that. I was like, "Yeah, he does." He really does. But his receivers balled out for it. Like that's why you go and get a camp Coleman. Like that catch down the sideline is crazy. He has two like badly off target throws to Wingo. And Wingo just has great balance and body control to contort himself to catch those. And they just made more plays than Tennessee did. You know, Tennessee, what did Tennessee have one offense to touchdown? Or two? 'Cause they had the return. - Right. - Yeah, they had one. One, right, like Texas defense played well all day. 95, whoever that is, I thought like played really well in the interior and in 40, the white kid was really good as well. Like they handled them up front. - For Texas? - Yeah, 95 is in Jafrard. 40 is Lance Jackson. Like I just kept watching those guys like, "Oh, dude, okay." That's, those were impact guys for that for sure. - Yeah. - Arch is weird 'cause like, I don't know. We've seen so much of him now that it's like, it's hard to sit there and think that it's gonna change. But like he's great for two drives per game. - You know what I mean? - Yeah. - Like they're a two-- - The first one and the one you really need. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's always two possessions in every Texas game. You're like, "There you go." That's why he was a five star. That's why it's not just his name. And then every other drive, you're kind of like, I think it's just his name. - I don't know, I hate it. - Tom, it's like there's a lack of just drop back, hit an eight-yard completion, get up, do it again. - Yeah. Like there's a lack of rhythm to it. And yet, Tennessee's a solid football team. I don't think they're amazing, right? Like you had the benefit today of playing a freshman and at times you really looked like a freshman. But he also did some really good things when he had some time. And your defense stepped up and like, having a really good defense and an offense that can occasionally hit home runs, mixed with a lot of strikeouts, teams win that way. - Colin Simmons, we mentioned his poor decision-making with the personal fouls that came up. - That was hilarious, but also like.
It was funny. I wanted Sarkar Cam more for that. Look, like, like, fourth and 20. I don't know. Come on. Incredible. Yeah. I mean, the, the, how do you gain 20? But then he kept piling on sex and quarterback curries and quarterback pressures. Like he continued to be an absolute game wrecker. Um, both, I thought both defensive front, I mean, you can lay your credit in your blame. I thought both defensive fronts got after it. You called out Jim Knowles earlier. I thought that we spent some time looking at Tennessee. And I thought maybe fair, like, maybe professionally, we were withholding judgment, unprofessionally kind of yadda yaddaing the rest of the Tennessee picture. Thought Tennessee's defense showed up. I feel like that deserves some credit. It felt like they, they made archbaining uncomfortable against an offensive line that we know has really good players. And you know, arch, maybe the lay so again, credit blame here. But guys like Xavier Gilliam Gilliam getting after it. You know, like, there it's just, I thought that that Tennessee team that didn't necessarily have a lot of superstars that we always call out. I thought that they really did a good job of applying the kind of pressure they needed to give themselves a chance to win. You've got the phase on Brandon, kind of like, showed rolled up on shoulder injury that put George back in the game for a little bit before Brandon comes back in. Like you said, but he makes some mistakes that very much make him look like a freshman in Tennessee is not the number one team in the country. And they also kind of bungled their chance to maybe beat the number one team in the country. But I thought that one thing that I am taking moving forward with the balls, even in a loss, is that that defense that I think had kind of been, you know, just like, oh yeah, it should be a pretty good defense. They had a big challenge today against a lot of very talented skill players in an offensive line that has very good players. And they they applied not as much pressure as Colin Simmons in the Texas defensive front was able to get on phase on Brandon, but certainly enough to impact the game and give themselves a chance to win. There were 16 sacks in this game. Yeah, it was at 10 and six, right? Yeah. Yeah. Five I think from Simmons alone. Do you I mean, Texas has two huge wins. You know, beating Ohio State going on the road and beating a good Tennessee team. And their fans are very angry, which is how I which is why I think that like Texas is legit. Because it's like when you're winning games and you're winning big games and you're in your fans are still kind of pissed off of you. I feel like you're ready. You're ready to take that next step. And I think Texas is great call. And look, they they have some tough road games still, right? Like not crazy ones, but you still have to go to LSU. I don't think they'll lose day and end, but they're they're oh and six against the spread. They're last six road games. They're not playing the expectation on the road. Oh, damn, they didn't cover today. They really did kind of try to lose that game at the end there. Didn't they? They were just I mean, so the onsite kick was illegal. I don't think so. It was a drag kick. Somebody on Twitter was saying it has to be like like a lot of people were talking had to be kicked exactly from the 35. Awesome. I'll talk to head coach to all check on that one. They'll be like check. So in person, I trust the rules on that. If that's legal, everybody needs to be doing that. We'll say Texas, you know, breaking the rules. Not exactly out of line. I got we got some Texas fans in the editorial room that are not happy with the discipline of this football team. I think it starts from the top down. They think that Sark being mean to Holly and never apologizing for it has given the team permission to do the stuff that they've been doing. People I listen, that's how you know they're ready for the big time. That's what I'm saying. Yeah. This fan base and this team are ready for a national title. They are built for this. Tailgate saying that SMU will not lose to Missouri State and now we're talking. So friendship has its limits, right? I think that's what it tells us is that when it went rashly and case that you're getting together and they're trying to figure out how this is going to go. They got to at least make sure that, hey, buddy, this has been good that y'all are frisky, but come on. Let's pour some points on for the boosters here. What logic of mine is insane? What? Somebody said my logic is insane. Oh, I don't know. What was insane? I don't know. What's up Rico Chico? Welcome to the tailgate. Please be nice. Yes, he does. What about, speaking of, there was a time where one of my criticism of me on this podcast was that I was too hard on Georgia, you know, that I'd always pick on Georgia. I would never be impressed with Georgia. That I was always underwhelmed with the performance that I was holding to a champion from a team that I was holding to a championship standard. I don't think it was a great day for Georgia, even though they pounded him. I don't know, man. Like, Oklahoma still has athletes all over their defense. Georgia like didn't, like Kirby said, we didn't beat ourselves. Oklahoma kind of beat Oklahoma. And I think they knew the type of gain they had to play. Georgia looked like they knew what they had to do and they went out there and they played fast and they played angry. You know, it probably wasn't going to be pretty. For about 30 minutes, that's the thing is what Kirby said is in the second half. We didn't have a second after this game. I'm going to listen to Kirby's doing terms it off too. Yeah, I did too, but Kirby's doing coach stuff. I'm not going to comment on a game I second half of a game I didn't watch. Listen, I didn't, I didn't have to watch it. Kirby's doing coach stuff. Oklahoma is tough to play against. Period. Their defense is great. Offensively, you're not going to look sharp against Oklahoma. I don't care who you are. Second half, they were up 28 to nothing at halftime and they watched John Mateer, like do like a keystone cops routine in the first half. He's like slipping on banana peels and throwing balls all over the place into Georgia arms or touchdowns. Nobody on that team was scared in the second half. They came out of the locker room and said, we're up 28. There is no, and as soon as they saw number 10, come back onto the field for Oklahoma and they didn't go to their backup quarterback. Everybody on that Georgia sideline knew the game was over, so they they've relented a little bit. Kirby's pissed about it. That's all that was 11 incompletions is more than Gunner Stockton has had for the entire season so far. They have been moving through opponents like a hot knife through butter and they finally met some resistance. Who are the opponents? We sure we want to use the word opponents. It's Oklahoma opponent like substance, maybe. Well, I'm just saying that they who the last offense to have a good day against Oklahoma. I just they met some resistance. Shoot. You're just a Georgia hater. This used to be a Georgia panel in the playoff. I don't know what's happened to you. I think I think that it is from the context of, did this team do anything to make an argument that they're the number one team in the country? That answer is no. No, they haven't beaten anybody. There's right. It should have, but this should have been a beat somebody game. It could have been a beat somebody game. They beat somebody, but somebody that's worthy of being number one over. Not when Texas has wins over Ohio State and Tennessee. All right. I think George is pretty good. So do I. But not worthy of being number one right now. Sorry, chip. I think Georgia can win the National Championship. Do you? Doesn't sound like you do. Yes. Hate NAS chip Patterson. Hate to see it. Hey, you know, let's see who? I don't think, well, then in that case, I don't think Texas can win the National Championship. Who can? Who can? The Miami Hurricanes. That's it. That's it. They got a lot of injuries, man. That's got that's got to stop pulling up. Oh, no, don't don't fall for this. But do not let him get away with it. He said you're talking about how Georgia played poorly against Oklahoma. So he's not sure they can win a national title, but damn it. He's watched Miami will Stanford, Florida, A&M Wake Forest and Central Michigan and who, boy, nobody's beaten that team. Yeah, just, you know, I hadn't hadn't really seen them and really see them sweat like they did against Wake Forest. Who beat Louisville? Who did? I just, yeah, maybe Wake is just really good. Yeah, maybe Wake really should actually be ranked. We'll see. We'll see if they land there. I think that while there is, there are teams one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, I think that I'm still waiting for a team to throw a rose to that I feel good about as a true, as a true you can beat four teams in the college football playoffs. Can I pose a theory? Sure. I brought this up on HQ earlier today when I was with Danny and Tommy Trehead doing the postgame for Texas Tennessee. Do we as college football fans who grew up expecting the sport to go a certain way where every single season we would see one or two teams who were clearly markedly better than everybody else have to adapt to a new world where the top has flattened and those top eight sometimes maybe even 10 teams in whose some seasons sometimes maybe only six are very, very, very close and separated
by thin margins. So that no matter how good you are, even if you are the best team in the country, you will go on the road and play another good team and you will not crush them like you used to because that is just not the way the sport works. And we need to start understanding that just because Texas is winning close and winning ugly does not mean that they aren't the best team in the country because they've actually gone on there and won those games where other teams haven't. And maybe this is more like the NFL where there's going to be a lot of one score games in the fourth quarter and some bad bounces are going to kill some teams. But dammit, you can get away with the loss now. Maybe. Yeah, I think I think you're more right than you're wrong on that. But we used to go into the season like, okay, there's three teams, right? It's like Banda Clemson, somebody else, maybe somebody else, you know, would usually fall off. Like we had like a decade like that. And thankfully, like that's gone, you know, thankfully, like we have 12 or 13 fan bases in the chat right now arguing their team has a shot at number one, which makes the sport a hell of a lot more interesting. Also a little bit harder to predict, honestly, you know, but yeah, Notre Dame has looked really, really good. Like their win over Wisconsin looks better now. After Wisconsin beat Penn State, you know, and you got to give him credit for going on the road and like produce, produce like a bad, but not terrible team, you know what I mean? And like they just, they may then look awful and just overwhelm them. So, you know, maybe it's Notre Dame, right? Like we're not going to know that until they play somebody with somewhat similar athletes, which may be a while, but you know, maybe it's the Irish. I kind of think it's still Ohio State. So do I. I think Ohio State's best team in the country. Yeah, but not by a wide margin, not by a wide, I mean, like they, they play your line out of day. Did they? Well, no, but like I think that that's what I'm looking for. I'm looking for someone that I can feel like I can, I said the Rose and I didn't mean for the bachelor, like reference there, but just like somebody that I can feel confident hitch in my wagon too. And I think Ohio State, even with their one loss, might be that team for me right now. Yeah, I mean, I'm not going to dig them for losing by one point, like they covered on the road at Texas, you know? So feeling out of ballot is different than the conversations that I'm looking for when I'm taking that top six or seven teams. And I'm kind of like, all right, so which one of you guys do I want to like really really make this my partner here? Let's go. Shit. Do you want me to like pick it Ohio State real quick? Yeah. All right, let's let's start. And then I want to bring it full circle with George chips, Georgia questions. I think I have my answer now. Go, go on Ohio State. Julie and saying 360 yards for touchdowns, all of them go to Jeremiah Smith. He sets career highs with 12 receptions for 217 yards and four touchdowns. And I will say, like juice Clark, the dude who is on him most of the game is probably going to be on an NFL roster when his college career ends. And Jeremiah Smith roasted him. So that is just kind of a testament to how good Jeremiah Smith. The problem with Ohio State, if we want to start nitpicking, Illinois came into this game without their two starting guards. They started a true freshman at right guard. He got hurt halfway through the game. He left. He was carried off the field and came his replacement who was probably the number six guard on the Illinois pecking order of who they'd want on the field. And he comes in against Ohio State. And guess what? You take away the three sacs Ohio State had Illinois averaged seven and a half yards per carry using their numbers five and six guards. And they were not just running to the outside. They were running up the middle. Where did Texas go, Ohio State when they finally came back in the second half right up their ass. Ohio State defensively, I don't think as nearly as good as last year. They're secondary, still pretty good, still very physical, very grabby, but they get away with it. And as long as you get away with it, don't stop doing it. But they're defensive line to me compared to what I expect from an Ohio State defensive line. And what we have seen from Ohio State defensive lines, kind of ordinary. So something to watch. I think that's fair. I think the reason why I like Georgia more is I think other teams have higher ceilings, but I'm less confident in those teams playing to their ceiling. Whereas I'm like very confident of Georgia playing to its ceiling to its floor. You mean? No, I mean like, oh, you think it has a maybe Georgia's best is a nine. And I hypothetically think some teams their best is a 10, but I'm pretty confident in Georgia playing out of nine. And I'm less confident in some of the other teams actually playing like a 10. What I love about the Georgia Bulldogs is that in this time where Ole Miss has a defense that's been totally rebuilt that in one week can bottle up LSU. And in the next week can get absolutely carved up by Florida. And we've got an LSU defense that's playing at a great, you know, very, very high level. But again, it's a bunch of different pieces. You never really know what you're going to get. You might have the kind of first staff that you had against Ole Miss where things get a little bit shaken up. And Georgia's all like old school. Georgia's what Clemson wishes it was. Yeah. Georgia recruits out a high school at a high level. And they retain. And they develop. And these like young players get older and they grow up together. And when they're out there flying around and flipping the field and force and turnovers, that's what I love about this Georgia team. They also play a quarterback. They also play a quarterback who would carry your grandmother's groceries, which is what Dabbo wants, but their quarterback is actually good. Man, that October 10th game in Tuscaloosa. Keelon, dude, he's special. Like that was great. Like just the downfield strikes consistently, like the explosives. What they scored? And I turned it off at like 42 something that they got to 49. Yeah. Yeah. They're just going to score 50 every week basically. Yeah. Pretty much sure. They walk out of bed, tie their shoes and score 42 points. It's what the Alabama Crimson tied to. I mean, they're not going to score 50 on Georgia. I don't think. But like, I think you go into that game, like if you're a benefactor, you're like, we can get 30, right? Can we hold gunner? You're like under 30? It's probably their mindset. Now, Georgia's like, you're not scoring 30 on us. They look awesome. Where is he? Where is he? Is the Heisman, by the way? Keelon? Damn, he's still 16 to one. It probably still comes down to the quarterback of the Notre-Dame Mine a game, but damn. Carolina has now lost seven straight SCC games. Yeah, that was rough. We don't, we don't need to, no, we don't need to roast Marcel Reed. We're ahead of the curve on that. We don't need dog. I mean, I didn't listen. I don't hear. I'm not going to roast Marcel Reed. What I am going to do is roast his offensive line. It stinks. That's for sure. Marcel Reed sure is hell ain't the solution, but he is getting very little help from that offensive line. And then when you consider Marcel's deficiencies and he's got an offensive line that cannot block for him, it brings out all the worst in Marcel Reed. And unfortunately, I mean, Michael co-set after the game, he was asked the question, are you going to, are you considering benching Marcel Reed? He said no. He did have some pretty egregious misses when, when A&M was scheming guys open, but like, we roasted him when A&M was winning all last year. Like I, yeah, they have other problems as well. Kiffin called a nice game, by the way, tonight. Like he, he had some guys nice and open for them on scheme stuff. Good. How's Levit? He made a couple of really good throws. It was almost as if the ankle injury or the foot injury or whatever it is. Like he was limping pretty bad. It almost like forced him to stay at the dead pocket, like not just be like crazy, you know, meth Levit. And he paid some, the one ball into his hands. Usually, the one, the one ball he throws to Watkins is like, is the reason you go get him out of the portal. Like that was just a crazy good throw down the sideline and it kind of broke the game open. And then they, they took him out. He was limping pretty bad. I've never snapped. And they put in Clark. And they scored what, one more touchdown, I think. Mm-hmm. So no trade as green. I believe meth Levit's gonna, gonna keep his name, by the way. But he does like just, he's a little, a little hyperactive. A little erratic. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. A little, a little erratic from time to time. We'll jumpy, little skittish from time to time. There was a, the way that, the way that my night was going once LSU had made it very clear that Texas A&M was not gonna score points in this game. I was able to, uh, to rotate my screens a little bit. So I didn't get my eyes for a full grade on Levit or the injuries. Obviously, as he is, I mean, he is just
going to be like an ace bandage. He needs an NIO with ace bandage the rest of the way. I think he's just going to be banged up. How often is there like a team that gets ranked top 10 preseason that pretty much the entire world points at and says overrated. And then that team actually like really meets those expectations right out the gate. Tom, what's unfortunate is how many times that team is Texas A&M? Yeah, but they usually over the last. No, but this like September that gets them. No, it usually is mid October, but now with the nine game SEC schedule, October come early, baby. Right. You haven't you missed out on a Missouri State. You know, you missed out on one more game that you would have stuffed here in September to be able to keep you up here high in the ranking. So, um, yeah, unfortunately, I do feel like this is a Jimbo, a Jimbo Fisher Kevin Summland. Like I feel like this, this story really has been told to this program. It's why Garrett was in the tailgate earlier, about 15 minutes ago saying, Hey, we don't need to talk about any more SEC games. Let's go. Let's keep it moving, trying to make sure we didn't get to Texas A&M. Yeah, I, I still have a lot of faith in Elko, something like I don't hear the behind the scenes type stuff about Elko's program that you would hear about someones in Jimbos. Sure. Like the good things and the good trajectory. And you see the type of class they're bringing in and it was like, Oh, yeah, like that, that's the five star I would pick to. You know, I mean, like, if you had to pick among them, like, I, I do think he's going to win big there. It honestly, like winning 10 games with Marcel Reed makes me like much more impressed with him. You know, I, I, I can think, I think my Kelko's a good coach. As I, as I mentioned, I think leading up to this, maybe on Mondays upon further review, I was extremely alarmed by the urgency that Mike Elko brought in his description of the lost to Kentucky. He seemed to be very aware that things are wrong. Or at least not, not where he was hoping they would be. And they ain't getting it done at the line to scrimmage. And Mike Elko, long time, very successful defensive coordinator is going to know that the only way you're going to get better at that is with just like good hard work and pray. Right? We'll see. Hey, they've got Arkansas next. If Marcel doesn't play well in that game as like a confidence booster, don't you kind of have to bench him? I think you want to see what you have in Brady heart. Yeah. Because you're going to have a transfer decision to make this off season. Yeah. And you probably want to see what you got in Brady. Okay. Speaking of, oh, Texas A&M schedule on the screen. He was only for one of the pick tonight, by the way. Real quick. Do you all want to guess what the final record is going to look like? Back to back losses to Kentucky and LSU? I had them seven and five. I didn't have losing to Kentucky. So like, there's no guarantee they get to a bowl. I think they do. But like barely. I think they'll make a bowl. I mean, like they should, God help us all if they don't beat Arkansas. But like Mizzou on the road, not a gimmie. Citadel will be a win. Now you got four at least at Alabama on the road. No confidence for me. South Carolina on the road. I hope so. But I'm not going to sit there and guarantee it Tennessee, not guaranteeing it at Oklahoma, not guaranteeing it Texas. I don't think so. Yeah. But like Arkansas at Missouri, South Carolina, host Tennessee, at Oklahoma. You have to feel good about getting to there if not three, right? Yeah. I think they do. But I'm not overly confident. No, I agree. I mean, if ourselves it's playing the way he's playing. Like, how can you be confident than beating anybody? They scored what three points tonight? Yeah, this is bad. Should material get benched? Yes. I said it on Wednesday. I know. What would you? Who's their backup again? Okay. All right. So I get I get I get 90 seconds. I don't know. It's with new bow. New barrier. And I get 90 seconds to explain myself because I've landed myself in hot water. Okay. Tom said, Oh, is this some kind of Raleigh beef? And then all of a sudden, I like wandered off. And I made a comment because he went to Cardinal Gibbons. Cardinal Gibbons is like a great, like very, very strong football program. And I made a comment about North Raleigh Christian Academy and eight man football. And I've heard because we've got a lot of fans of the cover three podcasts to our parents of current members of the North Raleigh Christian Academy football team. They do not play eight man football anymore. In fact, no, they've been competing in 11 man football at the highest classification of the NCISAA since 2006 as a 2005 graduate of Broughton High School. I clearly am not up to date on the latest classification of the North Raleigh Christian Academy nights who are very proud of their program. And re administration reached out because the parents of the administration reached out because they built current players wanted to point out that they've had alumni continue their careers at schools, including Stanford, UNLV, NC State, Eastern Kentucky, Jackson State, and Wake Forest. They're off to a they were off to a three and one start heading into the weekend. Haven't been able to catch up on the nights and see how things went over the weekend. And I will tell you that full like cards on the table, one of my best and closest friends from Carolina went to NRCA and was part of his eight man's beginnings. So when I am out here, you know, sort of poke and fun at Danny, who I think might have played eight man football, which I think is also again part of this conversation in this joke. And my my good friend Paul Danny went to a school where they had to have six inches between them when you were tackling a guy. Yeah, I my apologies to to the North Raleigh Christian Academy nights, their parents, everybody in the cover three tailgate for my dated, my dated joke about about NRCA and and their current qualification of football. You know what it sounds like to me, Chip, is that they were scared to play 11 man football when you were brought in the press box. They waited. They waited till chip batterson was gone. They needed to wait till chip batterson put the microphone down. My claim to fame and brought in was not winning major championships. No, no, that was that was a that was a golfer. It was not competing for the the US women's national team. No, that was a soccer player. No, no, no, no. Mine was was was simply up in the press box or court side with the microphone in my hand. I know that was surprising, but but I was not out there setting the edge for the caps. We we missed an opportunity for an absolutely viral clip in coaching T ball. If you guys see this, I want fingers a little bit bigger on the knuckle than my other one is like a drill a blood as well because you know, step, you know, like like small step in swing, I forgot to add the directionality component of where you need step two, right? Like, you know, generally like a small step forward in the swing would be good. If you step directly at the coach putting the ball on the tee and you swing your ass off, it was like, you gotta be kidding. I happened in the object circle. It was great. They made good contact, though. Now I'm quite I'm questionable. Not like Lane Kippen and Andrew work like legitimately questionable for golf tomorrow. Yep. Yeah. That's devastating. Yeah, it's not good. Coming up on the other side, a truly like season changing win for a coach that was on the hot seat and potentially a season ending loss for another coach on the hot seat. Big results in the big 10 and more. Next back here on the cover three podcast, an absolute meltdown in happy valley for the Penn State, Mittany Lions, jumping out to a double digit lead and then slowly, but surely Wisconsin just painstakingly climbs back into this thing and ends up stunning the Mittany Lions in the final minutes 24 to 20, my oh my how this reverses the outlook for Penn State and also the Badgers and also Luke fickle. The let's before we get into the specifics of the game. Do you think that this results can linger with the kind of weight that can sort of change the way Wisconsin fans feel about this season. Yes. I think so too. They're like looking for anything to cling on to as far as hope. Yeah. I don't think they want to fire Luke fickle. I think they want to believe that he can be the coach for Wisconsin.
I don't know if this changes. I mean, Colton Joseph had three interceptions in this game, including a pick six. I feel Penn State got way too conservative. Yeah, they thought the game was over. Yeah. And that's why it felt so painful just like watching this comeback. You're like, oh my gosh, do not give them another chance. It was a horror movie, do not go into the shed with all the lawn mowers. What the hell are you doing? Yeah. I was screaming at the television throughout this thing. I just, it's a great win. I'm not trying to diminish the happiness of going on the road and winning this game because that's something Wisconsin fans have needed after the last few years. But like, I think you're going to win next week against Michigan State, but I can still see you losing three in a row right after that. You know what I mean? Like, you can go lose at UCLA. You could lose to USC and then you can go on the road and lose to Iowa because Colton Joseph is still way too loose with the football and you called that long time ago. Yeah. I mean, if you have a high whoopsy daisy rate at old dominion in that conference, how am I supposed to think you're going to go to the big 10 and fix it? You're not. You're probably going to get worse. And I think to this point, he's really had turnover issues and today Wisconsin survived it. Like Wisconsin won this game Colton Joseph was 18 to 38 so he completed the fewer than 50% of his passes with more interceptions than touchdowns. They didn't really run the ball that effectively. Like I think Penn State gave this game away more than Wisconsin won it. The only pushback I would have on the conservative piece is that Penn State threw the ball like crap from the first minute. Yeah, their defense is legit. Yeah. I'm not a Rocco Beck guy, but I don't remember him being this bad at Iowa State. Like Game on Paper had them as a what fifth percentile like EPA per dropback result. Like negative a half, EPA per dropback. That's like really hard to do. That's like FCS playing Georgia type stuff. And 12 of 29 for 129 is the reason they lost this game. Like they're not saying the run game was great. It wasn't dominant, but this is like just take a knee and you're better than doing what we're back. And then it's passing a bit tonight. Like this is terrible. You know, you know, obviously, Wisconsin did the Iowa, um, yeah, this looked like a bad Iowa win. So like Wisconsin fans, do you want to keep that? Like do you want that to be what you are? Do you want to be Iowa? Try to win games that way? Like I think right now you just take winning games. For sure. Yeah. But are these the kind of win like I would just say, you know, I know a lot of Wisconsin fans. There's a line I who has been through this who has seen his team when it was bad win games like this and then seen the school make decisions based on kind of fluky bad wins like this. I don't recommend keeping Luke fickle just because you played slightly less terrible than Penn State. I you better start playing well. This was the matchup of the two teams that all off season. I think a lot of us said. I like the schedule, a hell of a lot more than I like the team. Mm hmm. I'm going to have to meet somebody has to lose and it exposed in a big way. I think on the knit and lie inside for sure, uh, no Kobe Howard has to impact Rocco Becht. Yeah. I mean, back. It's been a Kobe Howard merchant all year. Hey, whatever. It could be harder. Still there before. No. No. No. Other Kobe backs could have been a Kobe Howard merchant too. That is true. Somebody was like, hey, if they kept bronchermire, they win this game like, yeah, easily. Drunk dog. Drunk dog. Um, so not able, I'm not not asking that you should be, but, you know, we're waiting to see on on sort of Wisconsin, moving forward. For the knitting lions, you're still a good team. Good defense. Like, mm, you're a good team with a favorable schedule. And we'll see if you can continue taking advantage of that schedule, but losing this game at home, when they handed you the ball three times, including a pick six, it's tough. It is tough to, it is tough to instill confidence going forward. Yeah, I, I'd be curious to know like what your odds are of winning as a 10 point favorite at home, when you have a pick six, go in your favor. Imagine they are very high. It's got to be really high. Yeah. I'm not salty, I'm just being honest with you about Penn State or what is about Wisconsin? I don't know. Well, we talked all off season seven and five is the, is the disaster number for Wisconsin as a citizen maker, like six and six, he's fired eight and four, almost certainly would keep him. Seven and five is the one where you're like, oh boy, we either don't beat anybody impressive or we're dropping one. You really feel like we shouldn't be dropping at this point in fickle's tenure. You know what? I don't know, man, I still see three or four wins left on the schedule. You know what, I think it's more important than Wisconsin's record. New Mexico's three and one, and they just dogwalked New Mexico state a week after kind of having a, having a chance to beat Oklahoma on the road. I don't really care what this team does rest of the season. If Jason equates this job, I'm giving it to him. Yeah. No, that 100% agree with. I would get fickle to hell out of there, like X and X on coach. That's hilarious. I'll be waiting for like, I, now they go nine and three or something. I probably need to change my two. But also, Hannah, are you going to pass on Jason X just because they, like, they finally got schedule luck? That sounds like you leak to an insider that fickle is safe just to send up the smoke signal to X camp to see what's going on. And then we see it double back. Do you remember that happened to Tom Herman? Mm-hmm. Oh, no, Tom Herman's going to be okay. Oh, Sarkson. Oh, sorry. Tom Herman's not okay. He's out now. That's good fallback. And Sarkson, the, it was a, it was a heart, it was like, uh, Bama plays their semifinal game. Herman's out, Sarkson, bang, bang, bang, like all those three things happened far too conveniently. Um, so well, he does, it's true. Wait. Who is it? Zycourse, right? Yeah. Who fired Polini? Oh, right. Yeah. And hindsight, that might have actually been an okay firing. Yeah. I mean, the firing, some of the stuff to come out after, like, yeah, the firing, it turns out probably wasn't that bad. It's just every decision made after that firing was not good either. Yeah. Yeah. That's the stuff that's really, really tough. Um, can Penn State, she'll find a way to go nine and three? Yeah. They're scheduled. Wow. I think so too. I mean, defense is still really good. Mm-hmm. If they go eight and four, then I think Penn State fans are like, what the hell do we do? That is still a very friendly schedule. Yeah. What? Getting friendlier by the day. What's a Louisville fan feeling right now? Basketball season. Yeah. Damn. Yeah. How do you go from college football, playoff, dark horse to basketball season in seven days, lose to wake? You lose at home to wake. Yeah. Mostly because you're doing. Ugh. And you're two and two now. You, I mean, okay, you've only got one loss in the ACC, so let's not get too dramatic. So you still, you're not dead. But what's the thing we've talked about, like what's Jeff Brahms' nickname? Big game, Brahms. And why is that kind of a, both an insult and an honor? Because he always loses one game, minimum, that he shouldn't lose. Yeah. It's a, it's a two-way nickname. And this is what happens. So when you are capable of losing these games, and you've still got to play at NC State, Florida State, at Syracuse Stanford, at Georgia Tech, North Carolina, like, there's no reason to think Louisville's not going to lose at least once more. And there's no way this team with three losses is getting an at-large. They would have to win the ACC, but there's really, it's really hard to think that if they get a second loss, that they're going to have a chance to win the ACC. And they probably have two more coming. Mm-hmm. And the basketball team's supposed to be pretty good this year, right? Kind of hard not to start turn, yeah, it's kind of hard not to start turning your eye. I think there's going to be a lot more lingering and frustration and angst. I don't think they'll check out. I don't think, but here's the problem. Their biggest games have already happened. I don't think there's a single win left on Louisville's schedule. No. That's going to make them feel better. Maybe the pit Kentucky, yeah, I mean, that's what I'm saying. You get pit and Kentucky at the end of the season, which is a don't lose and a rivalry win. Potentially. Kentucky's really good now. Is it good? Are we sure beating Texas A&M? No. I mean, I know there's somewhat of a letdown of having that huge road win over A&M, but they didn't exactly look incredible against South Alabama today.
I still think for Louisville fan, it's a, it would be a, yeah, for sure, but it's not going to do much for you as far as the resume. And also, when is that game chip at the end of the season? When is basketball start? Before that. I haven't, I haven't, I haven't checked the college basketball. That's beast week. That game. I don't know if they're in Bahamas. I don't know exactly. They're at the Maui invitation. They don't even realize that game's going on. Wait, we're talking about for if you're a Louisville fan from your perspective, losing to wake at home after beating SMU is kind of a kick in the teeth. Yeah. I mean, it's just, I talked about it before the season outside of perspective. Jeff Brahms, nine plus wins every year. Just one of the best to do it. Talk to any, but like season ticket holder like this guy has me pulling my hair out one game a year minimum. And this year, congrats. Yeah, the win against SMU for the big game, Brahms, checkmark on the ranked win at home and the checkmark on the disappointment. And unfortunately, that's exactly where we're lovels at. The thing about a 12 team playoff is you have to put 12 teams, but this certainly puts us back into Miami and the 16 dwarfs kind of similar. Yeah. You know, it's terrifying. If you're the ACC in all honesty right now, what? And I will start. I mean, Duke is for no. Pit is for no. Virginia Tech is for no. We should not completely eliminate them from the conversation. But Clemson might be your best bet for a second team right now where there are only losses to a team that will be LSU which blew them out, but will be a team that probably wins nine or 10 games. So like if they could make a game of it and they have looked better, like, do you know who they're playing next week? Miami. So I'm saying, if they could, if they could least make that respectable and win out and they're 10 and two. I think SMU is their best shot for a second. Yeah. I don't. I have no faith in SMU or pit. Mason Heichel has been great against Bucknell and Miami of Ohio. Has not been great against power four teams. Well, the one nobody was going to play quarterback well and like that was an insane storm. The UCF game. They were not great against Syracuse. Syracuse got some good alignment though. Like I will say like like they have other problems. If you look like Syracuse's defense and Calls off into players and anybody but Calls off into coaching staff, you're a pretty good team. If it weren't for their schedule, I would take future Florida State Coach Manny Diaz's Duke Blue Devils to be their best hope because I think that he was legitimately neutral. But then they had, yeah, at the end of the year, they have at Miami and Clemson back-to-back weeks and then they have Wake the very next week. So it's hard to see them getting through that. But as far as football teams are going, I kind of think Duke's the second best team right now in the ACC. Performance. Like if you were just great there performance. Yeah, not power rating wise. I'm just saying as far as playing football at the moment. Yeah. Somebody will make them pass the ball a little bit though. That's fine. I'll just throw with the Nate Shepard. Yeah. I mean, throw it to him too. That works. That's your game this Friday. Pit for Junetech. Yeah. These, before we get into Madela re-ranking the top 25, speaking of Friday night, is the Hoosiers okay? I have not had a chance for you to watch this yet. I, they are really banged up at running back. They've suffered another injury there. And I just, this was what I said all off season. Josh Hoover is just not as good as Fernando Mendoza. Fernando Mendoza wasn't perfect. But Fernando Mendoza did just about everything right for the most part. And he helped kind of keep his, you know, his, your foot on the throw to the opponent. Like he did not relent. And then when it was close and tight, he was able to kind of stay calm. Josh Hoover does not give me that same impression. Josh Hoover panics makes mistakes. He makes some really good throws at times. But I, from what I've seen of Indiana, they are not going to be nearly as dominant this year with Josh for a quarterback as they would be with a better quarterback. And I know SIG said that stuff in the off season about, well, his best friend will be the defense in the run game. We'll be cutting, you know, down on turnovers. I, I, I don't think you can cut off Josh Hoover's turnovers. I think the fact that he should probably have more than he has right now because he's made some decisions that he's gotten away with. When we look at the, when we looked Tom, when you saw the way that Northwestern was able to push the ball down the field, play with a little bit of tempo, get the Hoosiers on their heels. Is that a, a Northwestern's not going to be somebody that we can just totally overlook this season? Yes. That's kind of what I thought too. Yeah. I think Northwestern is like eight in child is very much still in child's capable of doing incredible things and capable of doing horrible. Oh, God. Why did you do that? But they've got three good backs and a good offensive mind and Chip Kelly. Like they, they had the Hoosiers, when they were playing with tempo, they had the Hoosiers reel in a little bit. Yeah. Cause they really, I mean, they, they, they, the, the sex kind of, you know, distorted their overall run numbers. They still averaged if you take out the sacks over three yards of carry, which was not very good. But like Chip Kelly had that defense in hell. Like he was using misdirection to kind of really keep Indiana off balance and child was making plenty of throws. So like, they were able to move the ball in the air. And like that is one of those things that just Indiana's defense does not look as dominated. It's still pretty damn good. But you know, they're not as strong as they were in the secondary last year, either. And that's a problem. I think their front seven is still pretty damn good. But the secondary has slipped a little bit. And then Josh Hoover has overthrown Charlie Becker at least 75 times in outer through him once horrifically. Do we think that Hoover is closer to Curtis work than is Mendoza? Yeah. I think I think Hoover's better than Rorke. Yeah. Closer to, I mean, like, yeah. Oh, for sure. For sure. For sure. Yes. I, I think there might be an Indiana fan out there who would take the reliability of Rorke and the lower ceiling. Oh, that, if there's actually like a, like a choice between Rorke and Hoover than Indiana's in trouble. I think Hoover's better. Yeah. And not having like two top two running backs significant. Something certainly to take note of, but yeah, I also on my notepad was Northwestern moving forward. So how about this one? We spent about a decade just hiring all of Nick Sabin's assistants. Jake Dickert, David Braun, even Kurt Signetti, the FCS boys that have really been exceeding expectations, making the jump and being able to have some success. So you're cool. Something to keep an eye on with those overall trends. The hot coordinator off the championship staff might not be the move anymore. Don't be afraid of that guy who came from North Dakota, South Dakota, you know, like, you even came into board, right? And you know, if you were to trace his, um, trace his roots all the way back even before being a Indiana Washington and eventually at Alabama. Before we move on, I just want to shout out Indiana fans. I just, I think you guys are incredible in the way that you went from being not even caring about your football program to winning a national title and now being furious with your team for not winning by 50 points every week. Just you guys have really embraced the role of blue blood. And I, I'm saying this both sarcastically, but also earnestly. It's very impressive. How, how, how like, absolutely condescending and like full of yourselves, you've become well, that's the thing is generationally they're pulling everything that they've had from like, you know, three decades of the basketball role of blue, of actual blue blood, right? I mean, just, I think they'll get really toxic about it in football in 10 years when they don't win again. I'm just kidding. I have no idea. Well, how about this right now? I don't know. I, you make me pick five teams that I think can win a national championship right now. I'm not picking Indiana. Who are your five teams? Ooh. That's, it has to be a process of elimination before I would do. I'm making you do it. You just said if I were to make you, I'm making you do it. We agree there are more than five, but if I, if you had a narrow down, if you have to narrow it down to five, it's tough to kick Indiana out because the path to make it there, mine's very easy. Okay. Ohio State, Texas, Georgia, Miami, Notre Dame, those are my five. See, I like all those better than Indiana. Yeah. Yeah. I was, I was looking to whittle them out, you know, chopping away.
I hear with the machete in the jungle, but you just you led me right to right to the right to the treasure. I appreciate that Jeff Brahms loves Clev Luben tried to save his ass, but couldn't Carlos Hernandez was incredible. I was also from the the wake the the wake Louis will notepad Juju Lewis got benched at halftime. Yeah, he did and you know what Colorado looked better without him. That game did not make it on Either my quad boxes. I was running. I Danny and I had Baylor minus nine and a half. It was Danny's three star. So I had it on How'd like we look Like DJ legway. Yeah Not the savior so some amazing throws and then also some stuff. There was just yeah, yeah, like they I Think if DJ legway has a good game Baylor probably wins that game by 25 UCLA we mentioned it earlier putting Maryland in a very difficult position. I Don't think it's that difficult. Does it happen tomorrow? Do we need an emergency pod if it does? Oh, I think I think Maryland is on the emergency like like Dresche hold. I'm not I'm not making promises one way or another here on this This unprecedented global platform that is the cover three podcasts since that reaction show here at 12 57 a.m. Eastern time. I think that's more of I think there's more of a timing and availability situation, you know, we'll see If it happens tomorrow, we'll see If they can fit it in between golf and Garth Brooks Are you going to Garth Brooks? Yeah, we're gonna go to Garth tomorrow. I think that'll be awesome. Yeah, should be good. Very cool I'm not going to Garth Brooks if you know If we're around and if it happens sure but she's Thank you for making the statement for the podcast Tom You're very welcome. Did we do that? Yes, we did. Okay Not a turtle pod Not anymore Sorry guys A lot of coaches what's it? We'll have plenty of time. That was just it just so early Did not see the fire you needed to see And to have that team come in and just absolutely oh Run you off that run run you off the field I mean obviously We're we're approaching this from the isloxley fired situation of it I want to approach this from the ucla's good like flying across the country Early start the exact suck counter kind of game that we typically see teams have Slow starts from and ucla did kind of have a slow start in this game. It was scoreless after the first quarter That's what makes us all the more crazy like they put up 53 in the final 45 minutes But no, they are They they are I mean we were hitting them with like the are they you know the next Indiana kind of label At least everybody was because of the whole you know James Madison connection And I was poo pooing it saying we really need to stop But in all honesty they kind of remind me of 2024 in Vienna Like they just come out and If they're better than you they are going to keep reminding you that they are better than you until the game is over And then when it's done, it's done like I don't know if ucla I don't know who's left on their schedule. I'm sure they've got like some pretty tough games here like I don't know if they're going to go pull off some major upsets But when it comes to playing everybody else in the big ten who is not like Ohio State or Oregon Or maybe Indiana. I think they are going to dog walk everybody All right counter to that they will face some much better coaching staffs than they have faced so far Like I don't think autumn staff is bad. I do think cal staff is not good Sendigo states probably the best coaching staff they've faced. Oh you could argue autumn Maryland does not look really well coached this year I mean like you're gonna face fits you're gonna face fickle Right, you're gonna face fleck like you still got to play belama You know michigan u sc it it gets a lot harder now It does but I mean like it Where they Indiana wasn't facing great coaching staffs in 2024 either like they were just the teams are there better than they were Abusing I just get that kind of vibe from them like they can they have not been great throwing the ball all year And that's the other thing is like Niko is not Yeah, like top billing reason at all what I'm enthusiastic about the Bruins which is interesting and doesn't to grade them It's just interesting That is like the limiting factor for me with this team and why I don't think they could really get to the top of the big tenant compete with those team Man can they run the ball and do they have fun doing it Like that that is an offensive line that gets going downhill and starts having a whole hell of a lot of fun They also get buy-in from Niko to run it hard Mm-hmm when they need it like I think that says a lot about that staff like he's Niko seems like the most team player guy now there Which is a lot different than you know, he sounded a Tennessee Yeah And now it's time for re-ranking the top 25 which is sponsored all season long by Madelo College football season is Madelo season the fight songs the fan quakes the rivalry trophies are all better With an ice cold Madelo in your hand. It's not just game day It's tradition and those who keep college football traditions alive deserve a Madelo Madelo is the official beer sponsor of the college football playoff Well with Texas avoiding the upset with Georgia handling business and yes Notre Dame just cruising to per cruising against Purdue for their 14th straight double digit win whoo fighting Irish Yeah, we're gonna keep things pretty steady up at the top all miss however falls out of the top five after losing to Florida Gators in the top five can you rock with it? Easy to make that big of a jump so Miami ahead of Florida But Indiana struggles Ohio State has a loss And Alabama's on the other side of a big voting points gap If you want to throw the like if Florida lands behind Indiana That's fine, but they're an undefeated team With the win against Ole Miss not a lot else But it you know if Ohio State is ahead of Florida that wouldn't be it But I think that they're definitely ahead of Alabama given the quality of resume in addition to just sort of the momentum buzz hype and things of that nature Which is crazy because Bama looked amazing tonight. Yeah, that's weird I mean, I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just saying that is but against South Carolina versus against Ole Miss That's true I mean, I I think I think Indiana stays ahead of them I think Indiana stays top five because I just feel like the defending champs who haven't lost a game most voters aren't really going to punish them for the Northwestern game Because honestly, I don't know how many of them watched Indiana play Northwestern on Friday night I think Indiana on upsettler kept a lot of people up later on Friday night than they were planning to Hmm, I don't I think you give some of these voters a little too much credit That's possible. You're confusing you're confusing the coward Ralph Russo with every single AP voter And the irony is Ralph watches the football watch is all of them Which is why it's so hard to believe his opinions are as bad as they are because he's actually watching the games you would think they would be better Um, but I mean that's what we're talking about here the seven eight five six seven eight like that's the range that the Florida Gators are set to land in which again Has them in the top 10 for the first time since September of 2021 Uh, Ole Miss has got a real easy adjustment for voters. So head to head win against LSU So, yeah But one spot ahead of LSU is where we expect them to land a very interesting opportunity to move up for the Iowa Hawkeyes because why Penn State, yeah, gone, Louisville, you're gone, Michigan, you're gone, Texas A&M You're gone. Uh, would we just lose Missouri? You're gone. Yeah, yeah, so we've got a ton of turnover Which again, I think not last week but the week before might lead to that conversation where we've just got an absolute grab bag of teams That could be right here on the French, Washington Not looking like they're going to get in as they're currently down by 11 here in the third quarter to Minnesota You don't think that with all the teams losing and then with looking like Washington itself is about to lose as well That Missouri is going to hang on to the honor of like the annual 25th spot It is very possible. I am not going to make it my projection though because
of, let me give you this list. Okay. So already projected before our post podcast update, Boise State into the top 25. Everybody good with that after the western Michigan? Okay. Oklahoma State into the top 25. Yes. Maybe should have been already, but you know, you've got a win against Oregon. Lost against Tulsa is going to be an anchor, but good job in an impressive win pulling away in the second half. Good second half performance from that Oklahoma State offense. Hey, this one's going to blow your mind. This one, you're actually not going to like, but I do think there's, I think they'll get enough. There's a team who's got to win. They were there. I know where this is. They've got, they've got to win against Penn State. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, UCLA needs to be in. You see hell Nebraska. Nebraska UCLA for Genitech Duke. Yes. See, I look like I'm giving you, I'm giving you all of these teams. I'm giving you all of these options. Okay. So it keeps pointing out UMass, guys. Come on. If you ask B2D with a win yet, UMass made some steam like this week and and and covered. Sac State was the, the sexy, the sexy darling of the week. And that's where you got to remember sharps are wrong. 40% of the time. Yeah. Yeah. I just think there's an abundance of teams that you could make an argument for. And so your point about Missouri is fair. But at the end of the day is like, is a win over Kansas going to be enough for you to, you know, like have, have them in there. So that's, that's where I, that's where I think that ultimately, you know, even losing Washington, even losing Missouri and, and opening up more spots in there, you could end up seeing the likes of, you know, some of those other teams before you see Missouri hang on as the, the honorary last team in. Yeah. I, I, I, I just think for no teams that have legitimate P4 wins now deserve to be ranked over three and one teams. I did this at game eight deserve as you know, well, you know what, Chip, maybe if we hold people to a better standard instead of just allowing it, we can all raise our standard. My job is not to police. My job is to predict policing is what we do with pole assassin. We literally make two segments out of this tom. You have to add for the chicken and the egg for us to be able to capitalize on these top 25 rankings clicks. Okay. It blows and boggles the minds. I was in meetings where literally some of the most talented people in our industry are raising their hand and saying, why do people keep clicking on rankings videos? And it's like, I understand how much effort you're putting into this other work, but people keep clicking on rankings videos. I'm sorry about that. It's just, so, so do the best you can to make those rankings videos as entertaining and as engaging as possible because the rankings videos are getting the clicks and not necessarily some of the other work, just the way it is. Do you have Penn State standing? No. Good. Yeah. I mean, it's just, it's real easy at this point. That's why I say it's more of a grab bag of who comes in because you just throw these other teams out. No reason for you to be here anymore. Like, let's go out of here. The real tough piece for me in terms of making some of the shifts was trying to place the Oregon USC of it all. I've got Oregon at 16 USC at 17. I know those are sort of abstract without seeing a lot of the teams around them, but basically Oregon moves up, but behind Iowa kind of in that nestled in that range and then USC falls down as they've USC hasn't done a lot to be able to hang on from a resume or profile perspective. So, you know, well, we're not going to throw them all the way out of the club just yet, but they're on high alert for sure. BYU going to stay ahead of like LSU and those teams? They were off. Okay. It's, I mean. So, you're not going to fire them on their day off? No. I wasn't even supposed to be here. As always, we will have a post show update to the tomorrow's Top 25 today on CBS Sports.com. And you should go and check it out whenever you listen to this podcast. And that was the re-ranking the Top 25 sponsored by Madelo. While the rankings may change from week to week, Madelo will always be at the top of our list as the perfect companion for a college football Saturday. Remember, college football season is Madelo season. Coming up on the other side, more of our week for notebook and more next. Back here on the cover three podcast. Let's let's go ahead and open this thing up. But is there what's at the top of your list that we have not gotten a chance to hit yet from the week for Saturday? Probably Nebraska, just because this felt like a game that past Matt Rool teams would have lost. I agree. And they just didn't like like granted Michigan State's offense is horrendous. And they had an injury today as well that you know was made it worse. But they did go on like pretty easily handled Michigan State, which is like what like a top 70 team, you know, like maybe a top 60 type team. I don't think they're good, but they're not terrible. Like defensively, they play hard. Nebraska moved it on them. They scored. I know I know I know Michigan State lost Kim Edwards, but I feel like that was encouraging you for your Nebraska fan. That was one is like hey, we usually don't win that under Matt Rool. And they went and they wanted easily. Yeah, like I picked against him for that very reason, like just not trusting that rule in these spots. But you know what man? Sometimes divorce is good. Like we saw Dylan Riala come in for Oregon, play really well. Lead them to a win over USC. Meanwhile, Anthony Calandria continues to play really well for Nebraska. And that offense looks so much better with him there than it did with Dylan Riala because it just fits what they're trying to do. And I feel like Nebraska has an identity. And I feel like defensively, they have been better so far this year. And offensively, they know who they are and they're sticking to it. And Calandria, you know, he does sometimes they'll have a play here or there that are going to turn your hair gray. But for the most part, he's been solid. And it's just they look like a legitimately good team. Um, I guess we didn't give we talked about Jake Dickert being a great coach. Should you have any I mentioned the Carlos Hernandez just finding wide open spaces and Louisville defense. I think Louisville's defense is great rushing the passer. They've got some injuries, but also just some problems on the back end of that defense. So I want to give the deac's credit for for gotten that one out. Um, Geolope has injured during the week, but that mobility allowed him to be able to escape a lot of the past rush to be able to extend those plays and find that Jake Dickert, uh, his father-in-law past, I think recently, who's very emotional in the post-game press conference, you know, this was a kind of a moment for him. Again, I'm just nothing but impressed with the job that he's done. Uh, since, like selfishly, like my own biases, since, you know, watching him arrive in the ACC. So I think he can really coach. Yeah. It's it was some pretty good stuff. Also in the ACC, um, shoe stand for its leading torch attack in the ACC right now. And, uh, and the, and the Clemson Tigers won with one offensive touchdown. Man, wait, really? Yeah. I think both teams combined for one offensive touchdown. Yeah. Yeah. The final score is 24 to 10, and I think a Gideon Davidson touchdown run, but I don't have the box score pulled up. But if I remember correctly, there was a 17-play 66-yard drive that ended in the field goal. Yes, there was. And you know what? It's not a coincidence that I yawn as you bring it up, because I stayed up watching that damn game last night, which is why I'm tired right now. Yeah. I was setting, setting things back. I don't know, man. That, uh, that Cal offense is, it's a rough watch. Did they really take JKS off the field around a trick play in a critical situation? I believe so, yeah. Jesus Christ. But here's the thing, bud. I thought Woken had a really good tweet about this. I know. Here's the thing. But before you get to dance sweet, it's just nothing. I've watched a lot of Cal football at this point. Nothing has worked. Yeah. I it's not even it's it's the play calling. Yeah, this is what I like against UCLA. I was like, I hate this offense. They're running. I don't I think they might have passed on first down twice. That's just anecdotal memory. I could be wrong again. I was very much not enjoying watching that game fading in and out. But what was dance to you? It's like a bad 90s NFL offense. You know, just wrong. First for like a then save us on third one. Dan's like, Hey, if you're going to hire Tosh, right? He's a recruiter. He's not a good coach. You have got to make sure
that he surrounds himself with good coaching. And it doesn't appear Cal did that. And I was like, yeah, agreed. - I might have some thoughts on that for a pun for the review, but I want to marinate on it before I step in it. - You got, you hired a defensive coordinator, and he's very much defensive coordinator and the way he's running the program. - Yeah. - Tough. - Are we more free JKS or are we more free Malik? Cause I want to break both those guys out. - I have more faith in Malik and Cal games next year to watch those two. - I have more faith in Malik right now than I do JKS. - I don't know, did you guys see the one pick six Malik through today? - Yeah, that looked like a double mischievous. - Yeah, both one receiver was supposed to block and one was supposed to catch the screen. It turns out both of them ranverts instead. So I don't know who screwed that up, clearly either. But I would guess they misheard the call or maybe they made the wrong call, whatever happened. But it was just very, very, unless you're a Maryland fan amusing to watch. Cause he, did you see a chip? Malik threw a bubble screen, except there were no Maryland receivers there. It was just literally the UCLA defensive backs. - Yeah, when you described it, I was imagining the bunch receivers where they both run vertical without the field. - And it's just the use of like corners, just like kind of like, oh shit, okay. - I just picture like Mike Elko with like a huge comparison chart. And like everybody else was Silicon Valley's moving to Texas. You should do it too. Have you seen the tax rates? Have you seen? - I did, so as Oregon USC was winding down, as we were getting the show ready, as I was working on tomorrow's top 25 today, that listen, it happens every single Saturday. There's gonna be a game in the night window that ends up getting cut that I know I need to get my eyes on. So I don't have a Mississippi State Missouri final grade here. - I did. - Great game, one of the best games of the day. - Great, I can't wait to watch it. - The Simmons made a bunch of really good throws. Missouri ran the ball effectively and didn't abandon it against Mississippi State. I would say that Missouri did a really good job for the most part of making Mississippi State earn it and not just allowing the home run ball. Like they gave up the one, but it wasn't like just like bombs away the entire time. They made them be consistent. Ultimately, Camario did make some big time throws in the game. Simmons made a lot of just absolute dots, but like on the final drive they had to potentially tie the game, like not the Hail Mary drive, like the other one, he literally threw three balls. It like nine attempts that should have been picked, but he did make some really nice throws. - This is a very bad idea. - It was not Mississippi State's best game. - No, I think Big Tech's got away with his Mississippi State lock here coming through for him. I don't think they should have covered, but I'll take it. - Deserved. - Earned it. - Yeah. - It's called balled a lot, Tom. - Okay. - Yeah. - Give and take it the universe. Give a little get a little. - Chat was trying to say it was all had no cattle, but I don't know. - I don't know about that. It was pretty good this week. - Would you take both of those teams over Texas A&M? - Yes. - No. - Ooh, see, I was like-- - I take the zoo over Texas A&M. I would take A&M over Brazil. - Would you take both those teams over Tennessee? - No. - No. - Take Tennessee over both those teams? - Yes. - Yeah. - That's probably the most fun part of the SEC for me. Is this range right here? Before we start to get to the depressing world, I guess what would be probably like 12 or 13 in a power ranking? - Which is what, like Auburn and-- - Yeah. Just wherever the Auburn hits. Yeah. - Wherever the Auburn's South Carolina Arkansas, it's kind of your nose dive. That's why I would consider-- - That's a little disrespectful to South Carolina and Auburn to lump them in with Arkansas. - Fair, fair. - What did I just say? But a listen, ACC boys, they've had to live with that for years, all right? - Yeah, true. - You know, you get grouped with booty cheeks real fast. Like, I'm a touchdown better than Boston College. No, I don't know, you're 16 and BC 17, right? That's where it goes. - Did you guys watch any of Kansas State since you-- - Since they-- - Very little. - Okay. Did you watch any of Boston College Hokies? - Yes. - A lot. - Crazy Storm. - Yes. - Okay, all right. - It was the actual Nordic Star and they actually lost the broadcast, did not show the final three snaps of the game. - I couldn't get that one on and it was like, all right, these stats suggest that the storm is as bad as people said it was. - It was, I mean, it was every camera angle is blurry because of the wind and they're just constantly wiping it off. - Like worse than Pit UCF two weeks ago? - Yes. - Right, but it was closer to Notre Dame NC State 2016 when Brian Kelly throws it. - Oh, wow. - Yeah, we didn't have the actual Hurricane Matthew creating the puddling that you could hear with the like sound boards when the wide receivers are running out to their splits before they go ask for it to Sean Kaiser to throw it again. - Yeah. I was thinking during that game like Virginia Tech ended up winning it. But like say Virginia Tech loses that game and then they go on to finish like 11 and one and they lose, you know, in the ACC championship or they're like on the bubble. The way that the committee is supposed to treat teams who maybe had an injury. Does weather get a consideration? - Yes. - Like would they be sitting there like, well, yeah, they lost that game but it was in a monsoon. - Yes, but, yes, but, yes, but. Yes, it would get consideration, but not for a team from the ACC. - Also not if the opponent is Boston College. - Yes. - So that's the thing, 'cause I feel like it doesn't matter who your opponent is when you're playing at a downporn. It's like 30 to 40 mile an hour winds. That's a pretty damn good equalizer. But hey, my undercashed pretty easy. That's all it matters. - Yeah, that is very, let's go. - Congrats to Sensei by the way. - Yeah, that's the thing is like, they're goal bowling. They are, that's a 4-0 team I will not consider for the top 25. - You have beaten booty cheeks and Kansas State. - If they do it next week though. - Every year there's a team that I just don't think is good that keeps winning. And Sensei and Addy is running away with that award in 2026. 'Cause I watched that team and I'm like, man. - There's an Arizona next week, like their dogs I'm sure, but that's not unwinnable. - No. - There's almost lost to Wazoo. - Yeah, on America's first watch network, the network of stars. NC State blew a lead to app but was able to pull away late. - I saw that. - Yeah, that's, I'm sorry I didn't get Kansas State since in Addy. We had a five alarm fire here. In the, yeah. - In the Dave Doran cycle. Oh, and not have been great. - Is that future Illinois defensive coordinator, Dave Doran? - I've, I have always enjoyed for Dave's sake, his desire to have a bait shop out in Montana, which I think is the exact quote is he's like, I'm gonna, like, I'm just gonna run a bait shop and I'm gonna get on the internet and I'm just gonna, like, troll all you guys from an account that you guys don't know. So he's always telling the media, he's like, I'm gonna tell you guys what you guys are doing wrong. After 15 years, you guys telling me what I did wrong. - Tom, I don't think we might be too old as, like, cultural media, like, media members for people to understand why Dave Doran's length was Illinois. Like, you might, like, you know, - Embret? - Yeah. - I'll say if he would answer you. - Yeah, they read it out. Yeah, no, he was at it out of you. But he's, he's worked with Brett at Wisconsin. Like, yeah, they're, they're a long time history there. But I'm just saying, like, he can have a bait shop and, you know, there's lots of lakes in Illinois. Chip, rivers, lakes, lots of stuff. - I mean, he might also like it again for just not having to answer to the media. A lot of coaches have enjoyed that. We'll see. We'll see how much, how much longer he, how much longer he wants to do it. - I won the last bit of fun and frivolity before we get out here. So, I don't have the answer to this trivia question. If it was a true trivia time in the spirit of the Ion College Basketball podcast, I might. But we might just figure this out together. The result was too funny and I couldn't get over it. I couldn't even finish the trivia. Did you, we don't even, we don't even need to hear if you watched it. Did you catch the score of the South Florida Bulls and the Bulling Green Falcons? - It was, yeah, I did not see the final score. I know that it was six nothing BG for a long time. And then the last I saw, I think it was 13 to six at USF. - Then they kicked the extra point 14 to six is your final. Okay. So Brian Heartline versus Eddie George is the second time that two at Ohio State alums have coached against each other. I do know this one. Can you name the first one this season? - Yeah, Wisconsin Notre Dame. Bingo, Marcus Freeman and Luke Fickle. There are seven Ohio State alums where current FPS had coaches this year. We have just mentioned Brian Heartline, Eddie George, Marcus Freeman, Luke Fickle. Who are the other three? - Wow, Ohio, just presidents and head coaches.
Um, God, I don't know what conferences is one of them might Jacobs or you don't know. That's not I told you I didn't I wasn't sure. The chat might know P.J. Flex P.J. Flex did not go to Ohio State. The chat is guessing the UMass coach. The Joe girl has stayed maybe. I know P.J. Flex didn't. P.J. Flex went to northern Illinois. Jacob's this one great win. That was the other thing. Great win for Toledo. Toledo is, yeah, I we Toledo upgraded at coach. Yes, they did. They're better now. Better coached. Yeah, my thought was did did. I was like, did both was Brian Hartline going to take it easy on Eddie George. And then at some point in the game, I'm like, Oh, no, this is not a friendly situation. I mean, that's kind of one of those obvious like that game in the Arizona game to me. We're very similar. It's like we have to go play a pretty clearly inferior team. We've already started like getting ready for our conference season. Now we got to go on the road, long road trip and opponent our kids won't take seriously because they haven't looked any good so far. And then we don't prep for them well and we're in a dog fight. We're the other Ohio State coaches. This is going to bother me out. Scholars went to a Ohio state. Where's the former? Oh, might this be somebody's got in the chat. Go less. Rob Harley. And I you. Yeah, goal is did go to a high state. I did not know that. Yeah. Oh, what do you know? Also, unfortunately for Washington, they're getting like throw absolute dime strike Lindsey tonight. Yeah, they are. That is that is difficult. Right. Yeah. Ball placement strike. Lindsey is not the guy you want to face when you win. Devon is looking like this. Ryan is playing man and Drake is like, okay. Yeah. Watch it. See this. Yeah. Stinky. Yeah, that be 403 left in the third quarter out in Seattle as the gofers are now up 21 to 10. Stanford just went up to touchdowns on Georgia Tech. Oh, did he sign an extension? Branky. Yeah. Oh boy, that'd be tough to get him out of the paint. Every time I'm talking to throws up 600 yards for UF. Oh no, and that the Florida, I mean, it is it is Georgia Tech 25 to 26. It is Florida 25 to 26. The Buster Falkner impact has been detailed extensively. Yeah. We are going to be back with you on Monday 11 a.m. Eastern time to be able to recap all of the rest of the pieces from the late night action, the Kansas State Cincinnati game and others we didn't get all our eyes on. Tom, I'm sure we'll be hitting us with another great. Can you give us one chart? Can you promise us one chart? Fine. All right. We'll get we'll get at least some good, you know, big picture step back. I was actually having a conversation with someone this week about the things about that Monday upon further review because we didn't used to go this long. All right. We didn't used to go this heavy on these instant reaction shows, which meant a lot more was available to review in a pun for the review. So I was thinking I was like, what what is a pun for the review? Do really well. It's about taking a pause step back, not getting into the nitty gritty and being able to take those big picture topics and be able to spin them forward.
