41: Vítor Jorge (O Mata Sete)

Hello everyone, and welcome to another episode of the Podcast Connexão Criminal, where every week I'm on this side to tell you several real criminal cases and all your facts and theories. This week I'm going to cover one of the most emblematic cases of Portugal. Known as the case of Mata Set, I'm going to talk about one of the few assassins in Portuguese mass, Victor Jorge. In this case, I based myself quite a lot on the book of Rita Marafa de Carvalho, which is very well written. Her book is great, the book is called after the crime, and I based myself quite a lot on my research in the book, because Rita Marafa de Carvalho already did the series after the crime and wrote the book, and she did a pretty deep research in this case, so I quite believe in the veracity of her research and the narrative of her, that's why this was my research base for this crime. Although most Portuguese people already know the case of Mata Set, this case has several names, it is known as the case of Mata Set, the crime of the Oso da Baleia beach, and the case of Victor Jorge, which is the main character. I don't like to say this much, because they are assassins, but it is the main character in the story, right? So Victor Jorge was born prematurely, he was 7 months old when he was born in 1949. He didn't know the date or month in which he was born, but in 1949 he came to the world. He was never assumed by his father, who from very early on went to school and worked in Germany, and his mother moved very early to Lisbon, leaving the burden of her maternal grandparents. The education they gave was quite rigid, and Victor Jorge always grew in that scene of being perfect, of not making mistakes, and the church every week was a votive Christian, this was thought out, let's say, because in that case he suffered a lot, but he lived his life to do good, so to speak, he was one of those people who had to be perfect, he couldn't make mistakes, because then he would go to hell, whatever. If you are in my podcast, it may not run very well, the joke, right? His childhood was not easy, much on the contrary, his grandfather was alcoholic and abusive with his wife, for his grandfather, and Victor had a lot of this abuse. He also witnessed his uncle running away from his two newly born daughters when he was just a child, so he was always surrounded by a slightly healthy environment for him, right? And at the age of eight, his mother returned to Lisbon with a new partner, and then Victor started living with his mother and with his partner, who later would come to be Victor's brother's father. The environment in the new house was less healthy, the mother's partner, Victor's stepfather, worked a lot abroad and traveled a lot for work, and at the time he was out, Victor's mother took men home. Initially, so that he didn't watch anything that was happening, his mother turned the sofa where Victor was sleeping for the wall, but he ended up hearing everything the same. Later, when he went to sleep in the same room as his mother, he was forced to watch everything that his mother and those men did. That's why I always say, in my episodes, take care of your children, because then, fuck off, all the murderers, or most of the murderers, of the two of them, will have a stupid childhood, or they will suffer some accident that makes them like this, like the guy they left beating, so to speak, and they ended up dying, but that's it, take care of your children, okay? Okay. With all this going on in your house, the relationship with your mother has always been very disturbed, and at the age of eight, Victor Jorge wanted to start working, but his mother didn't like it, and that's what he did, and that's why he hid it. And when his mother found out about it, there was an authentic discussion in the house, and I'm seeing that it's not that great relationship between me and my son, I'm seeing it. And let's say that Victor's mother wasn't the most affectionate person, or loving person in the world, on the contrary, she had a lot of difficulties in that aspect. Victor was also very hypocondrous, he, according to his diary, which you will already understand everything about this diary, this diary, is the part that comes in a serious diary. Which teenager, which adolescent wrote the diaries this week? Bro. According to him, he was known for several diseases, including kidney infections, stomach ache, ulcers, pain in the back of the spine, among others, and later began to complain about psychological problems. He even called his mother himself for the neurosis he had auto-diagnosed. In 1968, Victor, at the age of 21, met Carminda, 19, while walking through a garden. She was a house maid, and for two long years he tried to love her, but ended up always rejected. Until the promise that he would start a job as a table job, a coffee job, made him change his mind and finally gave him a chance. Then they started dating, months later they got married when she got pregnant. After the marriage, Victor went to reveal his sexual experiences. And after some existence, he ended up knowing them. According to Victor, he had liked his wife, and the only flaws he pointed out were the fact that he had hidden his past until marriage. For him, what bothered him the most was the fact that his wife was not a virgin. And he classified both his wife and his mother as women to whom he did not have respect for. At the time of the marriage, Carminda was pregnant, as I already said, of her first daughter, and months later, Victor started the military service mandatory. The marriage of Victor and Carminda was always filled with infidelity from his side, and very troubled, having been even violent to his wife, many times. And this violence was also widespread against his mother. Almost at the end of the military service mandatory, Carminda was pregnant again. But they chose to abort for financial reasons. This revealed a mistake to Victor's eyes, because after the abortion he announced that he was a boy, and then he lost everything. If he were a boy, there was no problem, but the fact that he was a boy would have been a mistake. In 1972, he had his second daughter, and the relationship between the couple was getting worse and worse. Victor started working at the Holy Mary Bank, and by this time, a new event marked the life of the homicide. His father returned from Germany with a reform for infallibility after a work accident. His parents came back to live together, but little lasted, because they could not live with each other, and Victor welcomed by compassion, despite knowing that he abandoned him. At this point, Victor began to have the first ideas to take someone's life. In 1977, Carminda became pregnant with her third child, and built a house in Amieira. At this point, Victor began to dedicate himself to his taste for photography, and work in baptized places and weddings. Who knew how to write, or how a person was able to read and stretch, however, he never answered when something went wrong. It was always the fault of another person, the fault of his infallibility with his wife, it was his wife and her mother, who were the women of sin. In 1985, he began to write his diary. In this diary he describes all his thoughts about his family life and the injustice he suffered at work. There, he also writes everything he thinks, what he feels, and what he wants to do. But always with a very important basis, the demonization of the woman's figure, as Rita Marafa de Carvalho wrote in the book "Depois do Crima". For a long time, Victor felt revolted with all his return, but a woman who, knowing one of the baptized people he photographed, was able to calm his anger, always that he talked to her about suicide and murderous thoughts dissipated from his head. In such a way that he completely altered his disposition for the rest of the day. They spoke for a few months and Victor had several attempts to get involved with her. But without success, this woman was called Leonor. The Leonor family guarantees that nothing romantic has ever happened between them, and I believe it. Until Leonor got a job in Coimbra and left the Great Navy, leaving Victor alone with his thoughts. Until, in a phase of his diary, he says he begins to accept that there is no possible end to the torment, if not the death of a long list of people. And he writes the initials of all those he planned to kill. Including colleagues from work and acquaintances. But curiously, he never put the initials of his mother on this list. This is because he wanted to make her feel ashamed to give birth to a criminal son. In November of 1986, Victor begins to outline his plan. He buys firearms and describes everything he will do later, concluding that the suicide will be the final act, because he did not want to be treated like a madman, and never planned to cover his crimes in the case of being arrested by the police. He intends to rape his 10-year-old son, but he planned to kill his daughters and some colleagues at work, but only to gravely hurt his wife. It is estimated that 14 hours will be enough to finish his plan and mark the month of December as a goal. Which does not run very well, because it would only commit his crimes in March of 1987. On March 1, 1987, Lionel Nortomás was 24 years old, and had met with his friends to eat cake and drink tea. His friends were José Pacheco, who was 20 years old, and Isabel Moreira, who was also 20 years old, Luis, 17, and Maria do Céu Araujo, who was 20 years old. Victor Jorge appeared at that party when no one expected him, no one had invited him, but he thought he would not be able to tell so many people were in that house. Victor said he went there to give the congratulations to Lionel Nortomás and take pictures, and that it was only remembered to pass by there, convenient. Victor comes in and Lionel Nortomás says they had to go back to Coimbra that night, and they would have to think about catching the convoy up to there. But Victor Jorge quickly offers himself to take them to his 4L to the destination, and excuse them for spending money. The absence of all the friends at the working place on the next day launched the alert. Four bodies were found on the beach of the Oso da Baleia, only at the end of the day. The fifth body, Isabel, would stay in the sea for more than nine days. When it was deleted, Victor Jorge claimed that he had a psychotic disorder, when the group decided to make an orgy, and forced him to participate, with the excuse of going to look for preservatives in his car, he went to look for a gun and a hunt to defend himself. However, this version did not prevail in court. But yes, as long as he gave the bullet to Coimbra, Victor Jorge suggested that they stop to see the sea at the light of the moon. He did not know what happened later, but he knew that Victor acted boldly, and knew that he would have to eliminate the strongest threat, that person who resisted with more ease, and that was José Pacheco. José Pacheco was the first victim, and Isabel the second, both dead with hunting shots. The shots scared the rest of them, who fled to the pineal, but Victor did not give up and continued to chase them, killing them with shots, and to the side when the munitions were over. After that, he returned home, and only woke up the woman, saying what had happened to a person and what needed help from her. When they arrived at a pineal, Carmen, 36 years old, was surprised by five shots of knife and ended up dying. Victor marked the place with a tijolo and returned home. She woke up her 17-year-old daughter, the oldest, and, with the same story, she says goodbye. At the same place, she returned to hunt down her own daughter, leaving her to die. She returned home to look for her 14-year-old daughter Sandra. When she arrived at the hunting spot, Sandra saw her brother run and ran immediately to her aid, asking her father to call someone to help her, but the father told her it was already late, and the ship ended up dying suffocated by the blood itself. At that time, Victor Jorge attacked her daughter in the middle. Sandra, who often went to martial arts classes, immediately defended herself and managed to remove the knife from her father's hand. Victor Jorge, exhausted, did not manage to react, and Sandra managed to escape. At that time, he returned home, took a shower, and left a large amount of money in the headroom of his son, and ran away in his 4L. While this, his son slept the whole night. Full of blood and panic, Sandra ran. At 3 in the morning, a car pointed at the headlights, and she screamed that her father killed her mother and her mother. They called the GNR, and she told them everything that had happened, she told them about the location, and there they found the bodies, already lifeless, of Carminda and the ship. Only later did they discover the other 4, later 5 bodies, on the Bosse de Baleia beach. Initially, they did not turn on these crimes, as a man could kill 7 people alone, right? But when the mother of Leonor said that Victor Jorge gave his daughter to his friends, they put together the pieces of the puzzle, and started hunting the man. Victor Jorge was able to go unnoticed for a few days, and on the next day, he sent the so-called diary to "Correio da Manhã", with more than 100 pages written by him. The diary had to be opened for a while, until the secretary's boss had to see the mail there to open it, and so they discovered it. The manuscript related to the thoughts and actions of an unstable man, and he Victor annexed medical reports, journal articles and bank accounts. The last pages were written after the crimes. During the search for the killer, even the military of the GNR had a receipt to find it. "Correio da Manhã" published the news of the diary, and it became clear that there was a list of cases to be beaten. These people disappeared, and only came back when Victor was arrested. They found the car with weapons, letters from the writing, papers, receipts, but the finds of the other bastard were cassettes, with the voice of Victor, and his confession. The body of Isabel Moreira was returned by the sea nine days later. Victor Jorge was arrested on the fourth day, when a woman was found wounded, dehydrated and sick in a barrack annexed to her parents' house, presumably after a suicide attempt. He did not offer any resistance when he was arrested, and asked the GNR not to kill himself, and he was taken to the hospital in Teleria, where they photographed and all the pictures you see of Victor Jorge, most of them were taken at this time. A week and a half later, it was done under the reconstitution of crimes. With a sudden calm, Victor Jorge reports how he committed each of the murders, and what he said while he was doing them. On December 15, 1987, Victor Jorge was charged for anti-collective of the Jews, and thus refers to the third person. As if the person who was in that court, and the person who committed the crimes, were two completely different individuals. The team of psychiatry determined that Victor Jorge was conscious and lucid when he committed the murders, so he could be put in jail for his crimes. If he was not conscious, it would be unimputable. Soon, he could be charged for insanity. Thus, the defense was charged for insanity, but it did not happen. Victor Jorge was sentenced to 20 years in prison, which was the maximum sentence. Now he has been in prison for 25 years, but there is still little to be found for these types of crimes. At the time he was sentenced, he asked for never to be released, but 14 and a half years later, Victor leaves for freedom. With 52 years, he passes through London, Paris, and is installed in Corsica. He worked in the cleaning of the local airport, returned to be a photographer, and fixed his life. But all of them didn't know his past, even his companion. Christine. Or Christine, I don't know, maybe it's French, Christine. A few years later, they found out about the acts and where this man was from through social communication and through various suicide attempts. On January 1, 2018, Victor Jorge was found dead by his companion. Some say he was committed to suicide, others say he was ill, but no one out of the circle knows for sure the cause of his death. He was 69 years old, and his death brought a certain relief. A lot, a lot of people. The day when the family lived, is now abandoned. It has been sold twice, but no one lasts long. Sandra, daughter of Victor Jorge's husband, passes there sometimes to remember the good times he had there, because she really liked living in that house. She now lives in the Great Navy, and has a son. Luis, the youngest son, lives in London with his wife and two daughters. And this was the case of Matassette, the crime of the beach in the Oce da Baleia. Victor Jorge left written in his diary the following sentence. "There is always a little reason for madness."
