Vita Vea Attending, But Not Participating, In Bucs Minicamp and Baker Mayfield on Last Season

[MUSIC] >> Box had their first day of mandatory mini camp though work today and of course a little bit on Thursday and then that'll be it until they return sometime in late July for training camp. Got to see a couple players we haven't seen out here during the voluntary wink wink nod nod organized team activities. One of those we talked about last night Steve which was Vita Vea. He was on the field on the practice field. >> And apparently many camp for him is voluntary. >> It's very voluntary exactly. The involuntary voluntary it's interesting because you know we talked to bowls and said well you know we solved Vita is he is he not working is it injury related because no no it's not what he didn't say is it's damn contract related like we discussed last night. >> I mean you know for as much of his attention and rightly so goes to Baker Mayfield in his situation he's talked about you know the first offer was disappointing and they have until start of training camp get his deal done. No one's really even talking about Vita Vea and I think you know you could you could say well he's not as important as a quarterback but on defense I've had bowls tell me flat out. >> As I said last night like the one guy I can't play without we can't play without is Vita Vea because we had there's nobody like him not just on their team probably in the league. And you know even though he's on the other side of 30 it would be a difficult deal to do when he signed his deal that probably average around what 15 18 million a year those same players now that was four or five years ago or making upwards of 20 25 27 million a year. So if you did get a free agent contract with the box or elsewhere it's going to be a significant deal and it's the same year that you're trying to you know extend your quarterback so these are these are big ticket items and I don't know how the box feel with respect to you know they as future and you know whether they there's discussions or not discussions or. >> I don't think they would franchise me all depends the interesting thing about him is that as he's gotten older he's actually become more durable you know early in his career he had a number of injuries and the last two years I want to say he's played as many snaps as he has at any point is is a career he showed up I'll say this he looks good like you know I've seen via Vita as as he's and that is not now I mean the last few years he's going out. >> And you know season work with in domicons who got himself a pretty good shape so it looks good but yeah not going to see a practice field you know and that's. I don't think they need him out there for first of all so non contact these are defensive lineman him pushing on you know a couple of offensive guards is probably only get somebody hurt so not that worried about it. >> See who you also see Muhammad we haven't seen him he was there he said you know when he was with Detroit before last year he didn't come to organize team activities and has best season at 11 sacks and so he prefers to you know to to continue working on his own as he did before last year and hope to have sort of the same result. And we also got a chance to talk again because last week it was at his football camp but today Baker Mayfield was made available to the media nothing new on the contract front he reported necessarily echoed the fact that you know he's going to be ready no matter what. Once when a super ball and all of that and but he did talk about how you know I think he's still you know. I don't know affected necessarily is a word but. >> Talk about what he learned last year you know after that that terrific start as a team and he was playing very very well going six and two five and one six and two and then losing seven on the final nine just that this didn't sit well with anybody most of all Baker because his play and the down downward turn of it sort of mirrored what happened to his team. >> It's there's no question that that had a big impact but he also you know this is good back to what bowls it said. He was on the injury report 10 out of 18 weeks and everything from you know his foot his toe his knees right by the steps of the oblique the right shoulder like there was so much there and that's what prompted bowls to say the other day you think you can take better care of himself. And you know if you're a yard or two first down that's fine but not when you're ten or eight or ten yards away may feel pushback on that really hard. He was taught he was told what bowls his comment was and he said very sternly I've started every game the last three years so I don't know if that should ever be a question. >> Well your kid coach just put it out there as a question you know in a challenge and and no one's questioning your durability at this point because yes you played all or your desire or you desire whatever yeah you absolutely go out there they'll have to hold you down I'm convinced that you know somebody would have to take your helmet before you wouldn't go out there but should you go out there and when you do are you able to be effective because of the decisions you made. >> Earlier in the season and the number of injuries and and maybe just hunchback here but maybe you're wearing down. At the same time your team is and you're a big part of the reason why they're having these slides because even though you are going out there. You're not the same quarterback in November December that that you were in September and October so he has to look at it whether he he doesn't want to give it you know much credence to us when he's talking to us but it it damn sure has become. >> So something that that the club is aware of at minimum so it was interesting me he bracelet that one no player wants to be told that they got a you know. >> But their response was that you know stay healthy or neck I think but it goes back to you know the best ability you have is availability now as Baker would say I have been available but I missed the game yeah but if you're not if you're getting hurt unnecessarily right and not able to execute. >> At the highest level because it makes it no one's no one's debating your desire to play your toughness your. You know you couldn't there's no way you could. >> I know you know and although quite frankly if if if Todd bull said that and Baker takes offense to it put another chip on his shoulder I kind of like that you know like he's always looking for him. >> For you know whether it's his contract or this now put a chip on that shoulder put a couple like sure you know but. And we've talked about this for years with him you know the unnecessary hits the not sliding when it's you know the first quarter and doesn't mean it's second down like you don't need the first down there. >> You know just like fourth quarter in a tie game and you're going for a first down sure. You know go for that you know take the hit that I mean that's you know but you know Tom Brady was always the king of that right no question yeah like me being available next week in the week after the week after is more important in this game this down this series this whatever. >> And I'm paraphrasing but it's a nearly a quote he said I would rather lose two or three games in a row then to go out there get hurt and be lost for the year for my team because then we have no chance and he did that once and yeah wasn't there for no great. >> Yeah well yeah yeah they want to make the playoffs and they want 11 it didn't make it but okay. >> Maybe it was 10 it was but it was a lot but they didn't make the playoffs yeah and he vowed then I'm not going to take any more hits and and jeopardize my team's chances well no that but you know his whole career got on the field because someone took a hit and he's a good lesson and that's why he got on the well and that's you know first of all football is just that right like almost and from the youth league up everybody that's on that field got their opportunity. >> How either somebody got hurt in front of them or they were able to take a rep and prove to the coaches that they were the best player and as soon as they got hurt somebody took their job. >> And you know all you need to know it may feels collapse it it made the team so he he comes out and there 5162 and he's a leading candidate maybe the leading candidate for NFL MVP I heard all the shows I people are glossing him like crazy. >> And rightfully so first two months of the year because he had thrown 16 touchdown passes and only two interceptions 16 and 2 your team is 5 and 1 then 6 and 2 you beat Seattle on the road which wound up winning the Super Bowl. You won 5 of those games in the last drive you know that that you're taking your team down and scoring and executing at such a high level and then the warm turned and then it started to go south and you got beat up and your team didn't execute and the defense wasn't good and the special teams was good and then all of a sudden. >> After going 16 touchdowns and 2 interceptions you throw 10 touchdowns and 9 interceptions the final 9 games of the year right so you completely turned it around in a bad way. and nine is not the ratio you want as an NFL quarterback. So you got to figure that, okay, well, you know, there was interest in the offensive line check. Absolutely a factor. But you know what? They were as beat up on the offensive line when he was throwing 16 touchdowns and two picks at any point in the season. You didn't have Tristan Wurfs. You had Grant Barton playing left tackle. Barton, we're the left tackle. You had Bretton playing center. You lost Yankees. Didn't have Gatake. Lost Cody Malke in week two. Like it was insane. You know, both guards were new. Like you didn't have anybody and certainly nobody in the right positions. And that's when you were thriving. So something changed, something happened with your performance. And it wasn't good. I would say that you're probably not going to be ever be as hot as 16 and two. But even if you came back down to earth a little bit, the string of injuries affected his ability to throw the football accurately. And it certainly affected his lack his mobility or lack there up because he went three games without gaining a yard on the ground. And that's not Baker. You know, Baker's effective on third down, you know, scrambling, getting, you moving the sticks and he could not, you know, put himself in harm's way. And so stop, stop running the football altogether. So don't don't, you know, question your, your health. Well, no, we know you haven't missed a game. But should you have played all those games, you know, and did you play them effectively? And the answers is no, he didn't. And the team didn't either. I mean, not putting it all on the quarterback, but we always looked to the quarterback anyway. We know the defense wasn't good. I mean, he said it today goes, you know, if we could run the football better, and I think we will, we may not have to score 30 points a game. You know, and I think the defense is better because all the guys they brought in, et cetera. They also started losing a lot of receivers at that point. They did. I mean, you know, there's a stretch in the middle where like they had none of them around. No. Jalen McMillan was having to play, you know, double team didn't play an X and you know, not Jalen McMillan, but the mecha Buka McMillan was out. You basically had a mecha and what, Ted Johnson and Cameron Johnson, like those kind of guys. Yep. Godwin was up and down. Like it wasn't good. And they're loaded at receiver in just in terms of their numbers and things. And Mayfields, you know, Mayfields really happy about that. I mean, he's like, you know, you want to lose Mike for God's sakes. And you can't really, you can never replace Mike. But he said, you know, I think Chris Garwin looks really good. You know, I've been training with him all off season him and J Mac as well. He says, you guys have been busting their, their butts like J Mac's healthy. He looks great. Mecha should take a step from year one to year two. Ted Johnson and Stoneman flashes last year and then you got Teddy Hurst. Ted Hurst, you're going to hear from this year. He both said that the other day. He's like, I, he's going to have an impact eventually, but it will be this year. Big fast guy. And then you have all the other players, you know, the K-Dotons and pain dirms and the running backs, Bucky Irving, obviously Kenny again. Well, so there's a lot of weapons out there for Baker. And what he thinks is is that, you know, he can sort of just go where the coverage dictates his terms of just, just streaming the football. With Mike, you knew the passing game was going to run through him. And that was a good thing. The defenses knew it too. And that wasn't a bad thing for the bucks because they knew when Mike was on the field, what kind of coverage they're going to get. And you can design plays if you know what kind of coverage. Be a little trickier this year that way, but I think they have plenty of targets for Baker. He seems really happy with the guys he's working with now. That a good red zone period the other day. I think they scored three out of four times at the practice yesterday. So, you know, they're coming along. And, you know, two more practices and then, you know, Bulls don't want to give anybody credit right now. But there's still a lot of hooping and hollering going on on defense. You know, we had a chance to talk to a couple of those guys today and the attitude is definitely different. So, you know, we'll see. Baker may feel also talked about being in the, I guess it's on Netflix, the special that Peyton Manning's group does called quarterback. And he turned it down the first couple of years. And he did so because he was new to Tampa and, you know, coming out of Cleveland. And he said, I just didn't want it to be perceived as, you know, it's me, me, me all the time. Now, after having been here for what, going on, you know, four years, been here three years, he's had a child one on the way. A Tampa's become more of his home because I, you know, I just, I didn't want it to look like it was always me, me, me, you know, I mean, but things, things have settled down quite a bit in his personal life. He's had success on the field. So, he will be featured in something they filmed all the last season. I don't know if you watch one of these quarterback series. I've seen they've done a couple of them now. They're really well done. Like you get to understand what these guys go through. And what we don't see is the home life. And I think that's what's cool about it. It's like, this guy spent so much time doing football. And then he go home. And in Baker's case, he thought it was good time because he has a little girl, a little boy who was on the way, Maverick. And so you get to see him as a father, a husband, you know, all of that. And he goes, you know, I bring a lot of this on myself the way I talk and I act. He goes, but I think it'll be good for people to see, you know, my entire being, you know, at home and different things. So I'm looking forward to it. I think he's going to be well received, but also I'm looking forward to see how he handled last year because this was filmed all last season when they were five and one, six and two. He's the MVP candidate. And in the wheels fall off. I want to see how he handled that at home, you know. So it should be really good. But it comes out. I think when I say July 15th, they're about on Netflix, if you don't have it, get it. So, but yeah, first day, one day in the books, we got two more to go. And the last one should be pretty short. And then it's a jailbreak. So we're not that far away, man, from college football, from the NFL SEC coaches, meanings that are in Tampa this year, which is interesting. Lane Kiffin will be coming down. We're not that far from the NFL supplemental draft, too. So no, that's true. And we know who's going to be in that as well. All right. Missed, remember the pack 12 pretty much closed up shop one year. I think they only played like four games, three or four games. Really good athlete. Hell of a nice guy. Just a tweener, man. They couldn't really find a great position for him. He wound up getting a ton of reps and a ton of opportunities at outside linebacker. But just couldn't post any numbers. I think his high water mark and I'm not looking up his stats. I want to say he might have five, and half sacks in one season. That would have been it. They moved on from him and he ended up in Cleveland and after just one season there. You don't see me in players stopping play. I mean, Ali Marpet did it when he was 28, he had a much better career. Maybe there's something physical, maybe not. But happy trails to Joe, trying to drink and they're still trying to find an edge rusher all this time because, you know, I think they think maybe they have one in Ruben, Bane Jr. Yeah, the boxing, the boxing that they're scary. So with Ruben and yeah, yeah, according to their, their tweet. Is that what there's social media put so they had a picture of Rubin Bain and hilarious and yeah, yeah, I'll be looking at like an iPad or something Just it practice just a picture that says you know this duo is scary or something I'm paraphrasing it But it was scary and I'm like you haven't seen them on the field together yet. How do you know that like I mean we anticipate they will be but right Literally not one snap although, you know there is practice and so you know we've seen them together I would be willing to bet Would you rather now I would I would bet that if he stays healthy and that's always a big key But if you got 16, you know 17 games out of Rubin Bain Jr I'm willing to bet my man hits double digits this year now I don't know if it's gonna be 10 11 14. I couldn't tell you that but I Really believe that this guy is going to be potentially to terrible word a Defensive rookie that your candidate, you know now A lot of things can happen, but I've talked to football players not just myself and I've talked to coaches and they're watching the same practice I'm watching it It's really just his intensity his attention to detail his bend his ability to you know to get Skinny as you were You know and of course his speed to power like this guy, you know they talk about his short arms everything But you know what they're long enough to put him right underneath your chin and snap your head backwards And and that's what he has he has his combination of power and speed and he's an angry worker like he's constantly You know every rep he wants to win you can see the effort that he puts forward. I think he's the real deal Do we know for sure? No, hadn't plays first game man not one game and you know Yeah, I was counting on them being better and everybody else, but we don't know You know let the guy get out there and do some stuff first but I Think from what I'm seeing and what I'm hearing that no one's gonna be disappointed with Rubin Bane Jr But it is it is it is funny, man Those two But you could said that about Chris Braswell a couple years ago, you know, he could said it about Hassan Reddick, you know Those are all names in the graveyard too You know we did say about them. Yeah Yeah And he's so efficient. He's going deep into games um, you know The guy to look up. He's already in the fifth. He's only thrown 63 pitches with one out in the fifth. So you got to have him on that field preferably at shortstop um So yeah, when I go to get my my son plays baseball, you know, you at baseball And we go to games I go watch to watch Taylor like Don't watch anybody else in the field You know before the pitch and as the pitch is being delivered like right his movements his anticipation his You know everything he does. It's phenomenal like He's ready to go. It's it's I love watching him play like he's great That's part of getting to go to games in person Because you know, you don't see them on TV. No You'll see the press it's just you can just watch him or watch guys like him like it's phenomenal Yep, nice He's pretty fun and he works at it all those guys do chemo nero does too and chemo nero has had a struggle This year at third base. I see he did it the other day where he ran in front of walls Not the ball down or something. It's like what are you doing man? Like at this point I'm willing to say anything to your left just just let go You know if it's hit right at your reverse maybe one step to the left go ahead and play it but the rest of it just let it go man Yeah, you got yeah, I think everything to your right to the line. So then game three, you could easily say. - You're arrest anybody, yeah. - Yeah. - Yeah, that'd be the way to go. Yeah, it's been an interesting tournament. Braining seemed to be really good. Like, you know, we're just so long. It's just we've got a long time to whittle down the field a little bit. - Yep. - But hopefully the US will make it to the knockout round. To talk about a lot of things, man, including Baker Mayfield, who you just talked about earlier. The contract situation, the philosophy behind the draft players that they did choose, Todd Bowles's reason for wanting to get bigger.
