They are 2-1, and that, of course, sets up Thursday night a showdown between the Browns and the Steelers. The winner of that game at least for a few days will be all alone in first place in the AFC North. Before we get to that, of course, we got to talk to Sean Watson. The main headline here is at the end of the game, everything on the line, he drives them down the field, game-winning touchdown to Harold Fanon Jr., 2-point conversion. It holds up after the Browns, the two defensive stops. This was to Sean Watson, who we didn't know exactly what it was going to sound like when he came onto the field. They did introduce the defense today, which was not a surprise during player and troast, but we didn't know what it was going to sound like when to Sean first took the field, but in the end, it kind of came down to, guess what, you score touchdowns, you win games, these fans aren't going to boo, they're going to be happy, they're going to cheer. That's what happened today. Absolutely, 100%. And really, it's also not how you start, it's how you finish. And he finished the game for the second straight week. He came back from behind in the fourth quarter to win the football game. So he's establishing himself as a gamer. He's establishing himself as the gutsy player we remember from Houston and that we remember from Clemson, and by the time the fourth quarter hit, and he was making plays, fans were chanting, let's go Watson, let's go Watson. I mean, it's almost surreal, isn't it? I mean, to come in here today and wonder if he was going to be able to actually function at Huntington Bank field because of the booze, and he's getting chanted. He was getting chanted. Now, there were a few booze, but I asked him, did you, you know, were you able to, how did you feel about those? He said, I didn't hear them. I didn't hear the booze. So I thought that was very, very significant that he only heard the cheers and the chance. Yeah. And I think like it really is pretty straightforward, Ashley, like, when, when did the fans really boo? It was during that third quarter when the offense was struggling. He had a couple of misses, it, you know, it seemed like things were maybe going to go off the rails a little bit. And then, but again, like, there wasn't going to be a scenario where Deshan Watson could have touched down past. And people were going to boo Deshan Watson, right? Or, or they want a football game, and people were going to boo Deshan as he walked off the field. Like, and the Todd Munkin has preached this, like, the best way to change the culture is to win. The best way to get fans behind, he was to win. And in that fourth quarter, it's something we've seen Deshan do in the past, you know, like Mary Kayce, going back to Clemson, going back to Houston, probably in high school. Like, fourth quarter game on the line, he was able to do what he needed to do for this football team, use his legs, be creative, scramble drill to Harold Fanon. And guess what? When, when you win, and the fans are out here having fun and having a party, they're willing to forgive a lot of things. Yeah. And, you know, it's like, the only times it really felt like it was getting dicey today, was during that third quarter when the offense had three straight, three inouts and things just had stalled. And Todd Munkin obviously even acknowledged after the game that it was bad. But, you know, I thought it was so interesting to hear Deshan lots and today talk about the end of that game and how he told the offensive line, "Hey, if the play breaks down, just create a lane for me and I'm willing to make something happen." And, like, I think that's so significant. It felt like even watching him today in some of the scrambling he was doing, but things he was able to do on the ground. I really felt like he got some of his mojo back today. Like, this felt almost like a version of Deshan that I don't know if we've ever seen him here. Like, I would say we certainly haven't seen since, I don't know, 2023, maybe? Yeah. They were like flashes of 23. Yes. Yeah. And it felt like to me at the end of the game that he just had that mojo back. And, I mean, if you would have told me that after that Buffalo preseason game like a month ago, I don't know that I would have believed that we would ever see again what we saw today. Yeah, you can just tell Mary Kay that he's more confident. And whatever it is, whether it's the physical, he's obviously seems to have confidence in that shoulder again, which is huge. Obviously, he has confidence in that Achilles now. I think he even said today, afterwards, that he's gotten assurances from his doctors, that like, everything's good, like, everything's fine. And he's starting to trust it now. And those plays he made today with his legs early in the game, it was a lot of scrambling and getting some first, you know, kind of getting out of trouble and getting first downs late in the game. It was the scramble drill to fan, actually two scramble drills to fan at one in the second quarter. And then they go ahead touchdown. Like that was a little bit of the old Dishon Watson. And like just to clarify, when I say that fans will forgive a lot of things when you win and score touchdowns, what I mean is on the football field, right? Like fans were out on him as a football player. And they are willing to kind of get back in as a football player if you play like he did today. And if you win football games, if you set up a Thursday night showdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Absolutely. That was probably my biggest takeaway from today is that Brown's fans are willing to accept a winning Dishon Watson. They're willing to accept him as a football player who can go out and pull off a gutsy, come from behind fourth quarter victory and throw touchdown passes to Harold Fanon and throw two point conversions to Denzel Boston and other touchdown passes to Boston. So they're willing to accept good football from Dishon Watson. We now know they did not hate him necessarily for all kinds of reasons. They were mad about bad football, what they perceived as bad football, okay? And I've said many times over and over and over again. Let's see what the guy can do when he's healthy, when he has a supporting cast and somebody who knows how to call plays for him. And Todd Munkin certainly knows how to encourage him to use his legs, which he calls his super power or one of his super powers. So Todd Munkin has been good for him, not only in showing faith in him, but knowing how to call a game for him, but they're going to have to get creative going forward because the passing game is not up to power at all. He doesn't have hardly any chemistry with Casey Concepcion. Those two guys together were not good today. There's nowhere to be found. Jerry Judy and Isaiah Bond, like we're I don't know if I don't even think Bond was off the field today. Right. I mean, like what happened to those guys? So the passing game, he only completed 16 passes. So there were not a lot of passes to go around or completions to go around today. Again, he did it a lot with his legs. And then it was basically the Harold Fanon show for the most, for the most part. And then he completed a few to Raheem Sanderson. Yeah. Raheem Sanders is the second leading receiver reception. Right. And those were supposed to go to Dylan Samson. So Raheem is playing the Dylan Samson role. Yeah. And probably we'll be doing that for a long time. But there are issues on this offense. And they're going to have to really go back to the drawing board and figure out how to fix some of those. Well, that's, so that's kind of the, that's kind of the thing that that fourth quarter massed a little bit. The stuff you were saying. And also in the first half of this game, there were times when Deshan was just not sharp. You know, you could make the case that he probably could have been intercepted three times in the first half. Now that's football, sometimes you throw passes that should be intercepted and they don't. And then sometimes they do. So, you know, you kind of have to balance how you view those, but it wasn't like just From kickoff to the 60th minute of the game the guy was unbelievable and there were certainly warts I mean my post game column off a win was like this offense is still sort of I don't want to say broken yet I think it's developing it this I'm not ready to say broken because it's a new a new play caller and a new system and so many new players but it's still very much in the development phase and So I think it's it's one thing to feel good about what Dishon did today To kind of show signs of life to leave that game winning drive to look a little more like the Dishon we thought he could be But also acknowledge that like it's still got to get better like this This version of Dishon will get figured out by better defenses and especially if they can't run the ball Especially if they can't protect and if some defense can come in and turn some of those passes that weren't interceptions today and Interceptions it becomes a very different football game Yeah, and I think the other part of this outside of the you know the sort of the run game still finding its footing Unintended I guess and the passing and needing to get a little bit more diversified and needing to develop chemistry There's also the penalty issue. I mean they had 12 today that cost them 84 yards 10 came in the first half Five came on one drive that like Marathon Nine-minute drive that ended with them not getting anything. Yes, that ended with a punt So that to me too, that's what I wrote about in my zero story because that's the Crapie football. I'll use another word that Todd Munkin hates so much So these things like all working together. It's like you see where they do have that room to still make this look better and some things Yeah, some things bounce their way today, and that's just gonna happen some games. It's not gonna mount your way, right? So I do think it it is interesting that They were able to still escape with this one But I do think it so much of it was because this defense today just did such a good job Putting pressure on Bryce Young where their hand not been pressure. It was something they saw and the way Mason Graham I like that how he phrased it in the first two games Bryce Young was kind of able to just tee it up against these defenses, and he wasn't able to today And it did kind of save their offense I think from from some of those early mistakes, but like the penalties I'm like, what do you do is it time to go back to the drawing board on that offensive line? like Titus Howard was responsible for three of them today, right? I mean, it's it's interesting I'm like do you rethink rate tackle? Do you do some shuffling around like we've speculated that the starting five for that line And week one might not be the story line by a week five or six like you don't know when you have five new guys playing together Yeah, and that's an interesting dilemma because obviously, you know, they traded for Titus Howard But they also gave him a three or thirty three million dollar extension. So that's a tough that would be a tough transaction to give up on so quickly, but that is the const that is an area of big concern like You know, the roughing the passer penalties are what they are the my call one was weird. I'm assuming that was a bodyweight penalty And then the other one on Sam Williams, right? That's the same on Sam Williams that looks legit I mean, it wasn't like Egregious, but it looked legit, but but those kind of happen sometimes like I don't know I'll get super worked up over those obvious you have to be smart and you don't want to pile those up, but It's the procedural stuff. It's the false starts. It's the You know, it's the the penalty where they didn't have a receiver or a tight end covering Titus Howard It's stuff like that Mary Kay the Todd Munkin was so adamant about this this training camp They have to get this right. They have to get this stuff fixed and Went this is now three games where that stuff continues to be a problem for this football Well, they're very lucky that to Sean Watson can use his legs. Yeah, because he got himself out of a lot of trouble That way today and if you didn't have someone that was that mobile right now It could get very very ugly instead. They're two and one. I think they're two and one For a couple of reasons today the defense was obviously light up lights out But also because of the Sean Watson's legs and then some timely passing in general the passing game is not good As I mentioned before he doesn't have timing or chemistry yet with Casey Concepcion Casey caught two of nine targets today for nine yards with a long gain of five That's not going to cut it. He's supposed to be there's a flowers He's supposed to be challenging for a thousand yards and so far It really hasn't happened yet and part of the reason for that today was the fact that Dishon Watson missed him on some of those short throws and I thought it was one of those days where He was not accurate on the shorter throw and there was one that Harold Fanon dropped but there was way too much heat on that ball. I tied So it just seemed to me that that he was oh, and maybe he was too hyped up I don't know it just seemed like he was off on some of the shorter throws We saw some of the ones those out routes to the right where it some of them sailed high Right, so he was just a little bit off with his accuracy today maybe more than a little bit and And you know, they need to take a look at that and trying to determine was it just that kind of day He was accurate when he needed to be at the end and that's the most important part But there are issues that need to be dealt with I Feel a little bit like this is sort of what this is sort of what Kevin's to Fansky was trying to do in 2023 When it was like defense play awesome Let's make sure Dishon Watson has the ball late with the chance to go win the game and there were times when he did and it just didn't work I think specifically that Philadelphia game Where they had some opportunities to maybe go steal that game and Dishon couldn't make the place he needed to today He was able to make those plays, but I do think Ashley if he can I guess if he can continue to play like this minus some of those negatives, right some of those balls That should have been intercepted some of those misses if he can continue to improve in those areas You have a quarterback that you can Probably win with I don't know how much we'll see, but you have a quarterback that you can win football games with And if you give if you give him a chance at the end He can do those sorts of things on a third and ten a scramble drill to throw the go ahead touchdown pass If you can put him in those positions I still think Dishon is a quarterback that at this point in his career Probably needs to be supported and probably needs to be raised up a little bit But there's also some things he can do to kind of elevate people around him in those in those kind of End-of-game moments when everything sort of chaotic and they just need somebody to make a play Yeah, we're on the same wavelength doesn't that all ends rise one thing that I've actually win with the quarterbacks You win because of like I think it's okay to have a quarterback you can win with like we've talked about this before Where it's like at other times in Dishon's career was he just asked to be a super hero too much to a point that like It's unsustainable now at 30 years old after two Achilles surgeries in this weird Un-what's the word I'm looking for just totally unprecedented shoulder surgery for a quarterback like he's he's never gonna be that same player He was when he was younger again, but like he you know you look at its career trajectory and it's like Maybe would he have been better off having more of that support around him when he was younger just from his own development It's like it's very fascinating to think about and look at But I think it's okay if you have to sort of prop him up a little bit And I think so much of the offseason was spent doing that just by revamping this past catching core Really the last two years when you think about the addition of a parallel fan and especially as well Like I think it's it's okay to put these different pieces and parts around him But you know we've talked about it before this idea that this quarterback competition stretching as long as it did Just wasted so much time to develop that chemistry that you know Mary Kay was talking about it to be getting in the podcast. I mean, it's just it's so obvious. Let's talk about this defense that this game felt like for a while It might be one of those like man the defense did everything they needed to do and the offense just couldn't hold up It's end of the bargain I felt like it was going to be one of those games that we've talked about over and over again the last two years So in that regard, it's good that the Browns won this game because this defense deserved this victory I'm in America. I don't know where do we start with Mason Graham and the pass rush do we start with? I mean, Quincy Williams has been awesome. Do these lines? two games. There's just a lot of good things all of a sudden with this defense after an absolute disaster in week one. Maybe we should just stop watching week one. Like nobody should watch week one and just start in week two. Well that really was their preseason game week one because it was the first time the defense had played together and the first time the offense had really played together. So that was kind of like a preseason for that. But I would start with a couple of things on this defense. Number one, they were without their starting cornerback in Tyson Campbell. He goes out before the game tries to do a little pregame test and he just can't go. So they're without one of their starting cornerbacks against one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL this season so far lights out these panthers have that. So that was one strike against them. But guys rally. I mean guys really stepped up. Let's start with Mason Graham. Mason Graham is going gangbusters this season. And Dan, you've been predicting it, saying it. One of the few things I've gotten right. No, but I mean you really have been on that bandwagon since early on in drinking him. Just predicting that Mason was going to have a monster season. And he has four sex now in three games and that first one looked like he was shot out of a cannon, right? I mean he is just he has come out of his shell. I've said this numerous times. I will continue to say it. I think he was dwarfed by Miles Garrett. I think he was somehow afraid to bust out and be himself. And now he's just like it's like Katie bar the door. Mason Graham is coming, right? I just think that that he's coming into his own. Of course it's also his second year in the system. And he's taking that leap that second year players often do. But I also think that he's kind of like hey I can go get this sack now. I don't have to worry that I'm taking somebody's half a sack. You know I don't have to worry somebody's going to get there before I do or what they're going to think of me if I do, right? I mean I just think that that he's taking ownership of his career of this defense. And there's just going to be many more of these. I jokingly jokingly asked him on Friday if you know if he's aiming for the NFL single season sack record. And he said well that's always the goal. Wait, he didn't laugh. Yeah. He didn't laugh. And I was kind of joking. Yeah. But hey, this isn't funny anymore. He's like leading the league or close to the league lead in sacks right now. So good for him. He's working his tail off. So that's that for him. And then Quincy Williams had a monster game. Quincy, we talked to him afterwards. He said I wanted to be out there. I wanted to set the tone. And they wanted to play with that Mike Routenberg violence. And Quincy really did set the tone. He arrived with the violence that they want to. And and he was just lights out with nine tackles. He led the team with nine. And it was just a really really good game by him. Again, Mason Graham with the two big plays, the two big sacks in a fourth down. Yeah, one on fourth down. And then one at the end of the game when they needed one of those big stuff. And then Ronnie Hickman coming up with the interception with the nurses from their direct partners. So lots of good stuff defensive. Yeah. And I just think, you know, with the Mason Graham thing, they're still kind of trying to figure out that past rush in a lot of ways, I think. And it is almost kind of working now from the inside out because, you know, they're kind of cycling guys through on the edges. Jared versus still. He's getting there. He's not quite all the way to where I think we thought he could be. And you know, he had a quarterback hit early in the game that I impacted a play like he's starting to get there a little bit, but he's not he's just not there yet. And so it's kind of Mason Graham in the middle. It's Malik Collins in the middle. Isaiah McGuire made a play today like there's still kind of figuring out this this past rush as a whole, I think, but it is kind of funny to see that it's sort of has switched Ashley from this inside out. And by the way, they were trying some weird stuff today. Jared first stood up as a linebacker. Mason Graham lined up at end at one point like there were a couple things they were kind of trying and working on today that, you know, Mike Gutenberg kind of gotten his bag a little bit to mix this up. And I think he'll continue to do that because there really isn't, well, Mason Graham is now, but there really isn't like that one singular guy necessarily that that is the engine of this past rush. Yeah, it was interesting. I asked a handful of guys, including Jared and Mason about moving Jared to like that linebacker spot and having him rush from back there and moving the defensive tackles to the end. And everyone said it was something about this matchup. Like they obviously want to get into details, but what I gathered was Mike Gutenberg saw something that he thought they could exploit like that. And I do think it worked. Now Jared versus not the beneficiary of some of those sacks, but I do think it cost confusion number one, which was big. And I know Quincy Williams, one of those third downplays, they did that Quincy, I think got to Bryce Young. And I think Jared maybe got one of his, the the quarterback hit on a play like that. Maybe I think we'll have to re-watch the game tomorrow. For me, I really remember everything, but like you saw it work out. So I don't know if we'll see these exact looks again, because it seemed like it was more matchup driven. But I think it is promising when you have a coordinator that is willing to mix that sort of stuff up. And guys were willing to do it and try sort of weird things. And it works out and you win the game in part because of it. And there is a, I don't know, there's like an edge to this defense. I know there's been kind of an edge in attitude the last couple years too, but there is just something, I don't know, there's something with this defense here over these last two games. And look under Jim Schwartz, when you played the Browns here at Huntington Bankfield, you got, they're very best. It seemed every week. And obviously today was very much a continuation of that. But they're, I don't know, the last two weeks there has been just something about the way this defense flies around. It just, I don't know, Mary K, it felt different to me today than in years past. I don't know what it is. I can't put my finger on it, but it just felt like maybe it's, maybe it's the fact that it was so pass rush focused under Jim Schwartz, like so front four focused. And now it really is like you've got all three levels just doing different things. You're blitzing more, you're bringing stuff from all over the place. Like, from play to play, you don't know what this thing's going to look like. There is just a different vibe to this defense, I think. Well, I think it has a different personality. I definitely think the defense has a different personality this year. And it's not the Miles Garrett defense anymore. It's different. I think they have, like you said, an edge to them. I think they have a little bit of a nasty knist to them. They talk all the time about 60 minutes of hell today is what Mason Brim termed it. And it really felt like that. I mean, it really, really felt like this. This was a tremendous defensive performance. It really was. So they do arrive with that violence. I think that there are a lot of players on this team that embody the spirit of this defense. And it's just different than it used to be. It's more intense. It's a little bit nasty. It has a little bit more of an edge. I think it's going to be more of an AFC North sort of like a Raven's Steelers nasty defense. That's what it seems like to me. And I think Brown's fairs are going to love this defense. And furthermore, Todd Munkin wore his hat backwards today in honor of Mike Routenberg who always wears the hat backwards. And afterwards he gave Mike Routenberg a game ball. And all of those players, all of those defensive players in the locker room were shouting Rudy, Rudy, Rudy. And I think that's a great setting. They are embracing their defensive coordinator. And they are adopting his very intense personality. Yeah, there's a little bit of a college field of this almost. Like on Friday, they were singing, "Don't stop believing." Right? When he came on the sound. And you know, there's that Rudy chant. There's Todd Munkin wearing his hat backwards. And so there is a certain vibe around this team. And you know, we'll see, we're three weeks into this. We'll see how long this can stretch out. We'll see, you know, this is a super young team. So maybe it's just right place, right time for that vibe. But right now, Ashley, it feels like three games into this. The Jacksonville disaster aside, three games into this. It feels like the vibes are kind of in the right place for this team to kind of just, you know, let's see how far they can take this here. Let's see how far they can kind of carry this momentum. Yeah, I think it just, it feels different than it has. I think the last couple of years where, I mean, I know in 2024, they had that early win in Jacksonville. But it just kind of always felt like that team was destined to be like a three-win team. Like, I mean, things just went wrong quickly that year. And I think it's, I mean, number one, it's like, it's not about us, but it's hard to cover a team when the vibes are like super low early, right? And it doesn't feel like that. It feels like guys are sort of buying in data. And then you were asking guys in the locker room today about, hey, it just seems like Todd has got this buy-in from you guys. I do wonder if it is because it is a young your team and Todd Munkin, you know, a very diverse background, but has that college background? And, you know, word for a very successful college program recently that I think he is kind of like the best of both worlds. Like, he takes some of those things that he's learned from John Harba, but he has that college experience too. And like, you got to be careful. I think about like too much overlap but I think he's telling the line very nicely right now with some of these things they are doing and these guys have really just kind of said okay we're gonna do what this guy says and so we're just gotten them a two and one record so far. Well and I think that's one thing um so he goes for it on that fourth down right at the end of the game and right they probably should have kicked the field go you have one of the best kickers in the NFL I think we can say about Andre Schmidt now you have one of the best kickers of the NFL you would have gone up six and there's a scenario especially because Carolina was moving the ball a little bit there and they did they did score a go ahead touchdown not too much earlier so there's a scenario where you go for it there get stopped Carolina gets to the 35 yard line and they're kicker at a great day ties the game and you lose an overtime and then it's like Todd what were you thinking you got to go up six in that spot and I think that's fair and that's probably legitimate and there's probably I don't know what the analytics call would have been there or not but um I think I just kind of get the impression here Mary Kay and I even argued with Lance a little bit about this when we were recording on Tuesday maybe it was after we were done recording um I didn't agree with them going for it in Tampa um from their own 30 it was like the 34 or something I didn't like that column it's like quarter but I think there's something to this idea of Todd saying I believe in you guys and I'm gonna show you that I believe in you by sending you out there to try to ice this game and you know Zion Johnson said afterwards like that means something to them and because they didn't do it it means that they're going to get back in the film room back in the practice field and they're going to make sure that the next time they don't let Todd down and they don't like you know their team down obviously they won the game so it's tough to stay let down but you know they're they're gonna be able to finish it next time and I think there's something to add coach kind of trying to instill at a place where it feels like everything goes wrong all the time and still this idea of we're going to win this football game our way and if we've got a fourth and one to win the game I'm gonna send you out there and expect you guys to go do it I think that can instill something in a team I can instill a belief in a culture in a team that maybe in week 10 week 12 week 15 if they're still in it maybe that pays off in a big way for them.
