more reaction to week one we had a game on monday night that we've got to react to just a little bit as smu walks off florida state we've got the ap poll i'll give you reactions on that but we've also got to start building up to this weekend which is a massive weekend of college football a weekend that all of us have been looking at and waiting for and pointing towards for a long time really the entirety of the off season we've been looking at this week too and we've been saying we can't wait for these matchups obviously ohio state and texas oklahoma traveling to michigan that's the game that gus jenny and i will have the call of um cannot wait for those um i've also got some more reactions because there was a lot that went on on week one during week one i guess i should say um that i wanted to react to so i've got thoughts on alabama uh old miss with that sunday night win ucla and discuss them penn state some colorado uh auburn baylor iowa i've got a lot including a reaction to the ap poll and the ap poll continues to remind us that it's trash um so i've got that coming up later in the program but first i wanted to get uh to our resident expert um and our coach our national champion coach urban meyer as we get all set for this week remember now 10 a.m eastern big noon kickoff it's going to be live from michigan as we get you set for ou michigan coach is going to be a part of that show and he joins us now here he is coach meyer what's going on coach how are you bud always good to see you joel always uh a pleasure to have you on i appreciate your time as always uh first things first your reaction to just last week's michigan escape in particular with all the controversy surrounding it but the wolverines get the w and they move into this week against ou uh it made sense but it doesn't make sense you know the whole i thought the big 10 did a good job the way they explained it however i still don't it's hard for me to buy and accept it you know the clock on the field is what everybody operates by the uh the clock on the field the western michigan had the greatest win in program history and more importantly joel is i guess you hear from the president maybe the ad that head coach who cares i don't care about the president of western michigan i care about the the players are the one that beat they beat the wolverines yeah and you know i i sometimes i just i i don't understand why they roll certain people out and once again all due respect i thought western michigan handled it as classy as you could i'm not saying i would have went there you know i would have lost my mind because i saw what i saw when there's three zeros on the board and it's over and you celebrate so coach it leads me to the question of like where do you go from here and no one in this industry knows kyle whittingham better than you do obviously he coached for you you guys are are tight where does he go from from there what is a week like this like in the building at michigan in my close to 40 years in the game i can't think of a better football coach than kyle whittingham that's the respect i have for the guy i i didn't know him when i went to utah and i had no intention of keeping him as my d coordinator and we developed a relationship respect i mean he is a not a good football great football coach and what he did at utah and won some pac-12 championships so my respect is immense i do worry he knows utah for 30 some 35 years and you wake up one day you're in a strange land that uh you know uh it's a little bit like when i went to florida i mean that hit me so hard it's well documented that i mean i was the intensity the scrutiny the non-stop um expectations so kyle's a grown-ass man he'll handle it he'll figure it out here's my concern the quarterback i know that's an issue there's other issues that might even be even greater when i watch their offense i think their defense is okay i watch that side of the ball but their offense their offense aligned and didn't play very well no and there's and that's you want a recipe for failure yeah you want recipe for failure have a have a bad offensive line and i know they brought their coach with them from utah who developed those two first rounders so um number one get that line fixed number two get the quarterback fixed and then you look to this matchup and they're facing one of the best defenses in all of college football including a guy up front david stone that might be a top pick uh top 10 pick in the nfl draft they are real up front and uh brent venables as you know because i mean you face these guys you know but brent venables is um he is as multiple on the defensive side as anybody in the country he will give you a ton of different looks and for for a quarterback and bryce underwood that we saw just struggle in terms of processing and recognition you know that that is a bad recipe you know where does michigan go on the field in terms of how do you have to have success after a week like that and you try to get everyone back to basics coach what do you do well let's talk about brent venables for a minute i did face him a couple times and uh joel we're getting ready to play for them and either the player for bowl game i remember walking in and our ga's you know we're out recruiting and come in and you got your big board up there game plan board and it said one third bear one third even one third odd and i looked at the ga and i said you gotta be kidding me and he said you know the multiplicity and the way they self scout must be i even asked him one time and he just smiled at me i said you know you're one third one third one third and what that means for the listener or the viewer is that the game planning is all about tendencies you know what what are we going to expect when our kids first it's on the right hash down and seven on the 47 yard line going that's how detailed everything is okay here's what to expect let's let's draw a couple plays or let's put a couple plays in for that situation you look at your staff and you're like what are they going to be in and the multiplicity but yet even more than multiplicity joel is the there's no tendencies and it's really hard to prepare for so if you're but what the hell you've been doing for all the last six weeks and five weeks. And I, I don't know if it's toughness. I can't imagine that at the, you know, at that program. And then what coach wet, cause they're always tough. I don't care. The one thing about the Wolverine football team, you can count you. There's a lot of other stuff. They're going to be tough. So they better, they better bring their toughness to this game. Well, it'll be a huge challenge. There's no doubt. They got to stop John Mateer who was excellent in this matchup a year ago. Coach, do you have a lean in this one for this week? I think you'll tell in the first quarter, I mean, this is either going to be a walk-off or, or Oklahoma is going to win by a few scores. I, you have to see, I think the defense will hang in there. I love John Mateer. I talked to Kevin Wilson yesterday, one of my former coaches, he's an analyst for Oklahoma and you know, he's their money player. And what I mean by money, I'm going to do a segment on big noon that, you know, the money situations are the third down and short fork down and short the red zone. And I used to always tell our players, this is where you get paid. You don't get paid between the thirties. You get paid on the short yardage. And, and to be successful, you got to have to have a money player. And he's a dual threat guy that can race tough as nails. He can run it. He can throw it. I love this kid as a player. You know, I'm leaning on, the obvious is I'm leaning in Oklahoma for what I saw last week. Yeah. I mean, I, after last week, it's, it's hard to do anything other than that. And in particular, when you saw in week one, like in particular, the LSU Clemson matchup that they were overmatched. Yes. From a roster standpoint to some degree, but the discrepancy in quarterback play was so great, you know, and that produces a huge margin. And that would be what I would be worried about for Michigan in this one. Now let's move down to Austin, Texas and your former school, the Ohio state Buckeyes going down there and coach, this is what I love about this game is that I think arguably these are the two biggest brands, most highest resource programs in the entire country, right? Like they're every single time Ohio state walks on the field, they almost never see eye to eye with their opponent. You know, I mean, cause they are the Ohio state, Texas could probably say the same exact thing until you get into a matchup like this. You guys used to call them and Ryan day still calls it a matchup, game, which very rarely happens in college football because the discrepancies of the rosters, but this is going to be a matchup. game and a heavyweight fight your first um perceptions of what we're going to see in austin on saturday well let's let's uh push rewind back to last year you had two young quarterbacks they're not young anymore they're veteran quarterbacks i thought ryan day and heartline was a coordinator at the time handled julian saying perfectly in game one you know i heard people say they didn't open it up they didn't your job is not to open it up your job is to win the game they were playing elite defense um however now you have two veteran quarterbacks here is the issue i had with texas last year and i actually asked cooper manning about this and you know this joel the minute of the minute guys are a team struggling you go after the quarterback when you watch the film you look back and say wait a minute those guys aren't open they're not giving great you know the the texas receivers and and even running backs last year i was shocked yeah uh not so much during the game because i didn't know what was going on you know because you're on the field and all that but when i watched the tape the next day i was like there's no one open you can blame arch manning all you want but there's no one open and then they weren't blocked it just really was not a good game for the office of skill at a place where you should have skill two or three d my understanding is that they've really enhanced the receiver group they're much better than they were a year ago if texas's skill can match ohio state this will be a close game if they don't if they won't ohio state is going to be a close game if they don't if they don't win this thing by seven eight nine points and i would say that the two biggest questions for both of these teams and certainly that the element of their team that got them beat last year and texas's three losses and ohio state's two losses they lost the line of scrimmage in those games you know how state beat up texas at the line of scrimmage they ended up winning the game texas could not block florida arch was running for his life they lose the game they couldn't block georgia arch is running for his life um yes there was skill discrepancy i would say i don't think that they played to the level that we've seen texas at the in the skill positions but the offensive line was an issue you could say the same for ohio state you know they lost the line of scrimmage against indiana lost the game same could be said for that miami game game i i look to those two offensive lines the one the offensive line that can protect their quarterback best is going to put themselves in a position where they're likely going to win this football game because like you said these are experienced guys now they're not going to be protected you know they're not trying to get the ball in the net they're not going to get the ball in the net they're not going to get their feet wet they're going to go out there with a killer instinct and try to make big plays with really talented guys down the field so ohio state's offensive line last week was if there was a an issue or a concern was and you're playing ball state and i flipped on the tape of the ball state game and and like when you watch western michigan western michigan is a really good team you know you put mac conference next to them and that's fine but i mean players are players those are some really good looking players and they dominated the wolverines i did not see ball state to have the same type of personnel as western michigan yet ohio state struggled running the ball against them um that can't happen so i'm sure they give them something to work on i'm sure the line coach and coach day and you know the coordinator are that's an issue you know that's that's they're gonna be their focus to get the offense line so whoever controls this line of scrimmage uh i i keep i agree with you that's always where it starts and it's always where it starts and it's always where it starts and it's always where it starts but i'm really anxious to see if if if arch manning will have some guys open to throw too yeah i think that that's and and he obviously i think due to his inexperience last year i think he struggled with a lot of those disguises uh that matt patricia was giving him but they had a lot of veteran guys in the secondary that could hold water and give different looks um last thing that i want to ask you about coach and and listen we talk about this in our sport a lot now and and you've experienced both leagues the sec and the big 10. um is there any way to overestimate what this weekend is going to mean in terms of the narrative between those two conferences as oklahoma travels to michigan and ohio state travels to texas about what the outcomes of these games are going to mean for the narrative surrounding their respective conferences moving forward no i think it's a great narrative i'm actually one that i like to fuel up where everyone's from because i was there and it's amazing that the big 10 not only caught but bypassed the game and i think it's a great narrative and i think it's a great narrative and i think it's a great narrative and i think it's a great narrative and i think it's a great narrative now this year's a whole different era a whole different year but certainly the last three years and last year when you look at everything even the fact that the big 10 had more first round draft picks than the sec i can't believe i'm saying that this is a whole new i mean i just love the narrative i love the battle back and forth and i was part of it for so many years and i love it i'll tell you what though the sec is pissed off you know the commissioner's pissed off there's a lot of pride in the south for years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years you know the southern football was it now the northern guys got them but uh i think the narrative is going to be huge and i i love it i i think i think fox is going to fuel it and i know you're going to fuel it and uh because it's great conversation it's fine you know what it's fine it's true yeah it's true i mean go play yeah that's it's that's exactly right and and listen these these two leagues are are elite and this year they're elite and lsu kind of entered the fray as this team that we've got to consider as a potential national champion with their performance over clemson makes me wonder what clemson is all about coach to be honest with you i'm like what what in the world uh is going on down there um do you have a lean in this one in austin i have i have a feeling where you would lean but do you have one yeah i i think it's a walk if if uh if talent is equated that means the offensive skill i think it's a walk off it can go either way if not i'm gonna pick the just because the good thing about fox they don't mind if i'm uh i'm extremely biased because i am uh i'm gonna pull for the buckeyes but you guys know the respect everyone knows the respect for sark and texas are you kidding me this is here here's the thing and we can close this i hope these games don't go away joe i'm horrified that these games are going to be gone i agree we don't need to see indiana against old dominion we don't want no one wants to see that yeah and unless i wish the committee would go away it would turn into all play-in let the cop let each conference have four game so whatever four teams in and you guys go play you know you're picking texas last year did not get in think about that if they play old dominion instead of ohio state they're in yep i just think i think the core fundamentals of that is so wrong so wrong and it's so bad for the game of college football it falls on we're wasting you know you you me and fox and everybody we're going to just god-awful games where teams are picked by 50 that is not good for the game yeah i i totally agree with you i do think that the the the fact that we build a postseason with a selection based model is a problem and i don't see that going away as long as we're just selecting teams versus allowing them to qualify if we had a qualification i got i got i got i'm going to trump you it's a selection model picked by people that don't are amateurs they're no one's getting paid i mean you got people picking you know i i still it's the only multi the second most watch sport in the world or maybe not the world in in america nfl than college football and you're telling me you're going to pick the plan and i know all the committee guys i know most of them they're great people but what do you why are we doing that yeah man this is great you're preaching to the choir here you're getting me turned up i'm like one of those wind-up dolls right now you're saying all the right things oh man hey coach i can't wait to see you on saturday remember big noon kickoff starts at 10 a.m eastern ahead of oklahoma and michigan coach is going to be there in ann arbor coach nice people up there i know you can't wait and you and gus and jenny are the best of what you do love your brother i appreciate it have a going coach gosh i love talking football with coach meyer obviously he's done it at the highest level he's got such a unique perspective too and i thought it was interesting uh what he just said um during our conversation about kyle and moving from utah to michigan and and reminding him of when he went from utah to florida and just what a big shock shock that was culture shock and pressure shock you know the pressure at utah is is different than the pressure at michigan there's no doubt it was different for coach meyer when he went to florida and i'm sure kyle whittingham is feeling that this week they they win the game but it didn't look good enough and you know as i um maybe went a little too hard in on but on monday i i told you offensively it looked really bad they have to improve by leaps and bounds uh to be in this ball game on saturday and we'll see if they can and i do think that they will be able to do that listen this is an experienced offensive line that they've got um you've got experience all over the field on defense i thought their defense played fine and that offensive line should play better as they get more continuity as i always say you should have the biggest growth from game one to game two the problem is is that oh you's coming to town and that looks like a real contender in the sec and certainly a team that's going to have a host of draft picks all over up front at skill positions maybe even their quarterback john matier and i echo what coach said i'm a big matier and i think he is uh uh outstanding uh more on that game in the picks and previews um as we get into those that's coming up tomorrow on thursday quick When you need a winning team on and off the field it matters where you stay so stay at a hilton um here's the deal alabama looked really solid no other way around that now level of competition probably do we really know anything about teams like bama ohio state texas georgia no their level of competition was was so low now granted east carolina probably better than some of those other opponents in particular the fcs version of those opponents but i thought bama performed really well in areas and then there are some areas where i'd like to see a little bit more growth first and foremost keelan russell showed his talent he's clearly an explosive player at the quarterback position and by the way isn't it great to have a game like that when you're getting your quarterback's feet wet in terms of his inexperience what a great matchup to go out there and have he was explosive i really enjoyed watching him in particular uh in the scramble settings like he's obviously a threat with his legs i think he throws the ball really well i thought ryan coleman williams bounced back and had a really tremendous game he looked more like the guy that i remember from his true freshman year that was a positive um but i do want to just you know and this is not flagging i i like alabama you guys know that i picked them in my uh college football playoff i think they've got the right schedule and russell if he develops and continues to play well they should be a team that can get to 10 and 2 which would put them into the college football playoff now a couple of areas where i would love to see a bit of growth and maybe just a touch of a caution light here on the dashboard for alabama growth we still need better offensive line play as as great as it was to watch russell run around you know that's that's not always afforded you against better opponents it is still east carolina 95 percent of those yards that he had rushing were on the scramble he was their leading rusher the biggest question i had going into this season for alabama on the offensive side was yes the inexperienced quarterback but more specifically their lack of run game the fact that they didn't run the football effectively last year was a problem it was a problem for ty simpson it was a problem for the pass protection and the fact that he had to scramble that often is also a note of hey like is the protection where it needs to be now they're going to be able to do it they're going to be able to do it they're going to face kentucky this week that's a big jump up in competition and will stein did a nice job in the transfer portal um he did a nice job grabbing coordinators that are real coordinators so this is going to be a major jump up for russell in particular going i believe on the road i think they're going to kentucky if i'm not mistaken they're going to go on the road that's a that's a big deal for your first time on the road as a quarterback you need an offensive line to be solid and then the caution light i would say so that's what we need to see from them the caution light is just like you can't run around like this that often right i said it last year with john matier i said it this week with uh sam levitt it's great and it looks awesome but when you're exposing yourself that like that out in the middle of the field i don't know if it's sustainable okay so those are my observations for bama but again good performance for them i liked what i saw from their defense i talked about this offseason their identity being on the defensive side it looks like it could be uh for this bama team and that's something that their fan base and their alumni base from a player's perspective they're really gonna i think latch on to is to get that firm great identity of a tough uh that was a really great game it was entertaining i came away impressed with both teams in particular both quarterbacks i thought lincoln keenholds played well to transfer from ohio state for louisville and jeff braum they clearly are still a real team and jeff braum will continue to play these quality opponents well that's what he does um and i think they're going to be a tough out in the acc and then you go to old miss and you're like yeah that's that's a real team and i love trinidad chambliss my goodness the depth of quarterback play in this college football year is it's it's an embarrassment of richard riches really uh and i'm not sugarcoating it boom found it could not think of sugarcoated on monday couldn't think like literally my brain just went dead like hopefully it's not the concussions i'm not trying to make light of that you know i had several of them but could not think of it sugarcoated and thank you to all of you who texted there were several uh i appreciate it and you are genuine friends um so thank you for that this is not sugarcoating it i i understand that their defense didn't play well but trinidad chambliss is giving you a chance at every moment in the game and more specifically the bigger the moment the better he plays best trade a quarterback can have best trait and and chambliss has that in spades love watching him play because of that he throws it great great he anticipates windows incredibly well you don't see that um as often at this level there's so many what i would call see throwers they've got to see their throw before they they let it rip and then there are a few times a year there are guys that come out and you're like man he lets it rip into windows that he's anticipating his wide receiver being in and and chambliss does that he does a really nice job throwing against man coverage because he gives his wide receivers a chance and they had a lot of speed on the outside so i'm not worried about their offense i don't think their defense is is good enough to go on some sort of championship run so are they a contender not necessarily are they a threat absolutely this is a dangerous team because of chambliss in fact if you're i know this is going to sound crazy you watch chambliss play in those moments and and you see the threat he is with his legs in those big moments again like i don't love a quarterback running around all the time but in like a two minute situation that's when it's very impactful and almost impossible to stop from a defensive perspective he's also quick enough where he doesn't he doesn't take the big hits like we saw levitt take a couple of big hits against clemson um it reminds me of kyler murray you remember back then it's like yeah he ran but then it was just like quick as a hiccup he just steps out of bounds and doesn't take the hit there's a little of that to chambliss's game but his two ability because of his legs his ability to anticipate he's just a gamer man like if i had to draft a quarterback in college football right now and and i didn't know who my other offensive players were okay so i'm not drafting an offense i'm not drafting a coordinator i don't know if i have jeremiah smith or cam coleman or whoever it is i'm just saying like okay you've got to start before a coordinator before an offensive line before a skilled position player you got to draft one quarterback and you've got two minutes to go the ball's on the minus 20 and you've got to go down and score a touchdown who's your quarterback from college football right now my draft pick is trinidad chambliss i love him that much in those moments just a gamer so i really love him and like i said louisville is going to be very tough their game week three against smu as smu knocked off florida state they kicked the field goal by the way that game shouldn't have even been close they're about to go up 24 10 they're going to run florida state out of the building and then they just started playing against themselves i i'm not as you know uh from last weekend if you follow my twitter account i don't have it on my phone and so i don't necessarily like i don't see twitter a lot sarah tweets please tweet thank you uh sarah and i will continue to be polite when i ask my wife to tweet from my account but i did hear of an incredible social media post that was like it looks like smu is playing against smu tonight and that's true that was true all the turnovers and everything like that if they play clean that's a really good team you've got some good offenses i think that's going to be a great game a great game week three ls uh excuse me louisville and smu and the winner of that game is going to be in very much the seat to be at least in our estimation kind of that second place team in the acc maybe get a second birth out of the acc but certainly have the ability to play for the title as we anticipate miami being in that game is the best team uh in the acc so louisville smu that's going to be a giant game and because by the way if you look at louisville's schedule from here on out i know they took this l but if they were able to beat smu they're going to be favored in every one of their games there's a there is a shot there is a a path for louisville to be an 11 and 1 team and their only loss was a walk-off field goal loss to trinidad chambliss and old miss when they were in the top 10 and that brings me to uh the ap poll quick rant on the ap poll right now uh it finally came out and obviously we had a lot of games and they had to watch them all uh michigan i think probably astutely drops out after their performance in particular on the offensive side and louisville stayed in the top 25 which i think is a really good point and i think it's a really good thing that they were able to do that they're telling me that there's this many spots 15 spots between louisville and old miss did i not just see them play a game to the buzzer and Ole Miss is going to move up, and they're 9, and Louisville just stays at 24? I'm sorry. Like, it's just so patently absurd that in the AP poll, these voters continue to be archaic in their mindset. They will not adjust. They won't do it. They will not have a big adjustment. If you win, you stay. If you lose, you drop. If you win, you move up a little bit. And it's just no common sense. They just order them. Oh, my gosh. It's just absolutely terrible. Iowa's in there at 21. Utah's in there at 20. They looked great. Virginia at 25. SMU at 17. Oregon's at 6. Ohio State's up there at number 1, obviously, as you see. Texas is at 4. Indiana is at 5, even though I don't know if they looked great. Miami at 7? 7? 7? I feel like Edward R. Rooney deed of a student's 9 times. 7? Did we not watch? Did we not see their defensive line play so great? LSU at 8? Can we not adjust? I'm sorry. I adjusted. Go back. My top 10 is over on the Monday episode. And even though we didn't have great matchups, we got to sink our teeth into actual football, and it was no longer speculation, but we got to see what these teams were all about. One of those teams that I was excited to see, and I told you about it during the course of the offseason, including almost putting them in my top 25, was UCLA. U-C-L-A. U. Oh, sorry. I just, I hear that all the time. I live around a bunch of UCLA folks. Game was tied at 24 with Cal going into the fourth quarter, and then they pulled away. They dropped 21 in the fourth. I was watching that game and watched a little bit of the film. As was the case with the Ole Miss-Louisville game, I come away very impressed with both teams. I think Tasha LaPoi is going to work at Cal. That was very much an improved team. Sanga Politelli is a tough dude. I mean, he's out there hobbling around at times, making throws, coming back, tying that game up. But UCLA is also a real team. They've got real things on their team. Wayne Knight. Wayne Knight is spectacular. Wayne Knight is an absolute star. I love him. He led the country in all-purpose yards, if I'm not mistaken. I believe that was the stat from the preseason. Wayne Knight is fantastic. I love watching him play. They have a real quarterback who is an experienced guy. Yes, he made a couple of mistakes, but he's still a college kid, and guys are going to do that. You're never going to get perfection. There were some mistakes from Nico Yamal-Yava, but Bob Chesney, the coordinator, and the coordinators, all these guys from transferring in, they were just ahead of Cal. Cal's going to be fine. Tosh LaPoi is going to do a really nice job with Cal. There's no doubt in my mind. That's a team that's more dangerous than I anticipated moving through their ACC schedule now at this point. But UCLA is real. And then you look up at UCLA's schedule, and you're like, hold on a second. San Diego State, not easy, but manageable. Purdue. Maryland. At Oregon, not easy. And then you've got this stretch of winnable games. Wisconsin, Michigan State, Nevada, Minnesota, Illinois. Not saying they definitely will. I'm just saying that you could see that version, that team, winning those football games. All I'm trying to say is you could. There is a scenario that we look up November 21st, and UCLA is trying to mimic that. Exactly what Cignetti and Indiana did back in 2024. I'm just saying. Remember, that Indiana team had a manageable schedule, if not an easy schedule, and they lost two games on the road to Ohio State and then on the road to Notre Dame. Like, is UCLA going to beat Oregon at Oregon? Probably not, folks. Probably not. Now, is that going to be a tougher game for Oregon than we anticipated? Yes. So even if Oregon was to win that game, you could be staring at a UCLA team. A team that's, I want to say, should I say it quietly? UCLA fans are like, no. Could they be 9-1 going to Ann Arbor to face Michigan November 21st? Huh? Bruins? Bruins? I'm just saying. I'm just saying. That was a real team. We move on. Penn State. They've also got a very manageable schedule, and that was a nice, ease into the tenure for Matt Campbell. They beat Marshall 45-0. Again, do we know really what Penn State is? No. However, would you rather be Matt Campbell or Kyle Whittingham? Well, that's obvious. So they ease into their schedule. Rocco Beck was sensational. He's the most experienced quarterback in college football. He threw four touchdowns on just 18 attempts. Kobe Howard was really good. He was actually a holdover. He stayed. It wasn't one of these, like, I don't know, one of the million transfer transfers from Iowa State. It was actually a guy that stayed at Penn State. Big day, six catches, 161 and a touchdown. Things look good for them. And you look at their schedule, it's not difficult. 5-0 is likely before USC comes to town. That's going to be at Beaver Stadium, obviously. That's going to be a wideout game. Then they're going to go to Michigan after that. Michigan doesn't look like what we thought Michigan could be. We'll see if they can get back on the rails, although that USC team is definitely real. So now Matt Campbell's team is thinking of them. They're thinking of themselves like, okay, we got our feet wet. Here we go. Now we're all Nittany Lions. We learned the fight song. You know, Penn State, they're on their way. Listen, let me start with the negatives first, and then I'll get to the positives. Negatives. They still do a lot of things that winning teams don't do. They make a lot of mistakes. And, you know, whether it's crucial penalties to extend drives for the opposition, killing drives for yourself, special teams errors, giving up short fields, not converting down into the red zone, you know, failing on fourth down, things of this nature. Like, they make some of those mistakes. They make some of those mistakes, and that needs to get corrected, and maybe it will, and hopefully it will for Colorado. But let me go to what was different and amazing, specifically as an alum, obviously. But if you're just a Colorado fan, that was a real team at the line of scrimmage. They went into Atlanta and beat up Georgia Tech. That was not, you know, trick plays galore, and then you block a field goal, and you're like, oh, we won the game. No, no, no, no. They should have won the game, and it should have been a wider margin. Justice Haynes. Justice Haynes transferred into Georgia Tech and couldn't run anywhere, and Justice Haynes was one of the best running backs in the country a year ago. Colorado's defensive line looked real. Their offensive line looked real. Brendan Marion's go-go offense comes in as the new offensive coordinator, ran it 49 times. They were committed to the run game, and they were doing it with a tight end. Let's go. I get a little too excited about these things. Now their schedule, Weber State this week. I don't know if I have super high expectations for either team, but that game was terrific. at times, but terrific In particular, in the end. And if you didn't see it, Baylor goes for two, down one. They go for the win. Dave Aranda puts the cards, you know, puts the chips in the middle of the table. He goes for two. And the Auburn linebacker makes an incredible play on the tight end, and they stop him like this short. It's three inches. If you're not watching, you should. I'm putting my hands up together. It's like they stop him just short of the goal line. And I've got a couple of thoughts on this. Number one is, that was very brave of Dave Aranda, and I know that he's one of these guys that we would consider to be in a precarious situation as it relates to the hot seat. And here's what sucks for Dave Aranda, is that nobody cares that it was a brave 0-1, because now it's just 0-1. And that's, I hate it. I hate it for Baylor in that regard. And by the way, great win for Auburn. In particular, making that play late. And let me just make a quick point about the beauty of this sport. It's not always about the pomp and circumstance. What I love about this sport, meaning football, not college football, but just football in general, is that it really is about the details and the execution. As much as we want to make it about energy and all these different things, it comes down to details and execution, in particular on the offensive side. Here's an example. On the two-point conversion, they're trying to run a quick rollout with DJ Lagway, and he's going to hit the flat right. They're kind of picking the interior defenders, and then the slot tight end, who's the number three release, races towards the pylon, towards the flat. All right? And DJ Lagway is just on a half roll to his right to make it an easier throw, and it's basically a sprint right option. And he's just got to put it right onto the tight end, and he's going to run in towards the pylon. Okay. So what's the details of the play for the quarterback? Well, as the quarterback, the detail is, is that if one is open, he gets the ball, but it's not just what, that's what, it's how. How is the details? It's got to be on his upfield shoulder. He's got to be able to run through it. I know it's a tougher throw, but you've got to put it in front of him so that he doesn't turn back and slow down his momentum so that he gets tackled. You've got to allow him an opportunity to run after the catch. The equation goes like this, and this is what Bill Walsh used to teach all of his quarterbacks. Timing plus ball placement, equals yards after the catch. So the ball is thrown on the back shoulder. The tight end has to spin around. It gives the linebacker time to make the tackle. Okay. Let's talk about the execution. That was part of the execution, but from a quarterback standpoint, I just told you what and how. Now let's talk about the execution of the skills, the fundamentals. You're on a sprint ride option. You can't just throw with your chest pointed at the wide receiver or the target because you're not going to be as accurate. So what you're doing on the run as a quarterback, and if you're, if you're watching YouTube right now, I'm kind of demonstrating it right now. You've got to not just take the ball back with your middle, your offhand in the middle of your chest, because then your left shoulder, if you're right-handed, doesn't ever get to your target. So you've got to, you can't just have your chest go to the throw like this. You've got to actually push the ball back with your offhand. When you're on the run left or right as a quarterback, the first thing you've got to do is, is you push the ball back. And when you push the ball back with your offhand, it immediately gets your front shoulder to the throw spot. And now I can throw the football much more accurately as it pops out of my hand. My chest to the target, inaccurate. Shoulder to the target, accurate. DJ Lagway didn't execute the fundamentals of the play. He throws it on the back shoulder and Auburn wins the game. That's why football is incredible. That's why I love it. Every play, there's a big discussion about all of those types of details. And I just wanted to bring that to you. I thought you would find it interesting. A couple of more as we get finished here. Iowa beats Northern Illinois, 40 to nothing. Looks like Iowa. Iowa is, well, Iowa. Should we be concerned about who the quarterback is or what the rotation is? No. Why? Kamari Moulton, their running back, ran for over 180 yards on 11 carries. Hello? Hello? Offense had over 500 yards. They played a couple of different quarterbacks. The defense was outstanding. They restocked at lower level. Division II, MAAC players, group of six players, perfect for Phil Parker's defense. Production over potential. They'll come in there. They're going to win. They're going to play a very simple structure. It's the 4-2-5. They'd sit there and nickel primarily. They'll put a third linebacker in at times and play base. But they sit in quarters coverage. They make it very difficult for you on first and second down. Then they mix it up on third down. They've done it for years, and it's very effective. And guess what? Iowa is still Iowa. And then the most college football result of the weekend, UMass. Congratulations. UMass wins as a 29-and-a-half point dog. They beat Rutgers. Not a good look, Rutgers.
