Upon Further Review: Week 5 Breakdown & Week 6 Lookahead | AP Poll Reaction, Hot Seat Analysis

The Cover 3 podcast dives into the intricacies of the AP Top 25 poll, highlighting its volatility and inconsistencies. Teams like Missouri and Mississippi State experience dramatic shifts based on narrow results, reflecting voter unpredictability. Analysts express concern over biased voting patterns, limited media participation, and the influence of head-to-head results, even when they don’t align with overall resumes. The middle of the ranking field is especially crowded, where small ballot changes can drastically alter positions, underscoring the poll’s instability. A key insight is the apparent bias in favor of top-tier teams like Houston, despite weaker records, while teams with more balanced resumes—like Wake Forest or Kentucky—are overlooked. The episode also celebrates the Idaho Vandals as “Crazy Good Team of the Week” for their upset win over Montana State, marking a rare FCS honor. Notre Dame’s resilient performance in rainy conditions, relying on a physical run game and accurate passing, earns recognition as the “Practical Plays of the Week.” Playoff projections feature Texas and Ohio State as top seeds, with tight matchups like Oregon vs. Indiana and BYU vs. Iowa State shaping the path. The discussion concludes with a lighthearted critique of hurricane naming conventions, questioning the logic behind names like “Nolo” and “Polo,” and highlighting the emotional resonance of college football moments like Iowa’s fan engagement and community outreach. These observations underscore both the strengths and flaws of college football rankings and the importance of recognizing underdog achievements.

We're gentlemen, I fear that we have raised a crew of poll watchers here on the Cover 3 podcast because a lot of voters getting called to help buy name in the tailgate. Yeah, they showed up feisty. They showed up with accountability on the mind because you know here on a Monday, on and upon further review, that is one of the tasks. Yes, we will be jumping into poll assassin here at Momentarily. We will be letting you know the latest about the FWAA Pop Tarts Bowl crazy good team other week. Very, very special honoree. One that you might have had to stay up a little bit late for. That's the only hint that I'll give you. We also are going to go under the hood. We'll talk about a point for the review and a wagon announced wagon committee might have an announcement and so much more. But let's get started with that conversation. So every single week, we look at the AP top 25 poll and we could take a sharp eye at it. It is poll assassin. All right, AP top 25 poll Alabama did rise. Did they correct the top five? They did not Ohio State hold to them off. 1,490 voting points to 1,460 voting points. Yes, very, very narrow margins, even smaller than the margins between Ohio State Miami. Then you get to a little bit of a drop off in terms of the tiers here. You get behind Alabama, a little bit of a drop all the way down to Indiana, which is then the last bit of the top tier. Big drop down, BYU up two spots from number 10 to number 8. But again, much closer to Ole Miss and LSU and Texas Tech. A little bit further down, we see a big jump up for the Missouri Tigers after that win against Florida, up 11 spots to number 14. The Gators do end up dropping behind Missouri. Eme, got that one wrong. I would drops down, but not out down to number 20. Now lots to be able to chew on here. A couple of different teams to spotlight along the way. What were some of the observations for UDK? I think the AP voters are having a tough time. There's a lot of stuff that's going on here. The head to heads has an pretzel trying to figure out where do I put these teams. A lot of consternation that Kentucky's not in there, congrats to you for predicting that that they wouldn't be. The thing that I noticed that bothered me is not necessarily something that occurred in the poll itself, but the reaction to something. I saw a lot of AP voters themselves kind of pounding their chest, saying, see, Missouri was supposed to be ranked last. Oh, no, no, I don't necessarily love that because this is not a predictor poll. It is not supposed to be where you think, I mean, I guess it could be for some of those people, but that's not like justification. Missouri should not have been ranked last week. This week they should, but guess what? Now they're probably too high on the list at 14, because you're having a 24. I just saw that. It kind of bothered me a little bit. I think Duke is still getting disrespect to completely loss in the wash. They didn't have a game. They had to buy. So what would they do to catch anybody's attention? I get that. Good for pit for finally making in there. Pat and Arduzzi did been finally make his plea after the game Friday night. Finally, they heard, but there are some things that are on here that are just annoying. But I'm kind of kind of like, it's going to. What are you going to do? Again, like, if you're a fan, sit down and fill one out yourself. Right. It's very hard. And like, you got to remember, not every voter is voting on the same thing. Some are doing more resume style. Some are doing more who they think the best teams are. If you thought Missouri was one of the best one about teams last week and you had them in, congrats you're right. If you're going to turn around and have Missouri in last week, and then tell me you're a resume voter, I think I would have questions about that, right. Because I think the resume was kind of flimsy to that point, unless you really think Candace is good. On the duke point, basically every team that they've beaten now looks worse, like Illinois just lost to Purdue, right. Tulane just struggled with a bad Southern Miss team, right. Like, that resume is kind of thin to me. And obviously, they beat Stanford and then wait, killed Stanford. I can't get on board with the duke. Like, wake, I can get on board with. Right. And wake has a loss, but wake has better has been in perfect loss. Yeah. Well, even, let's forget, I thought we were banning good loss for a little bit. We are. But I mean, if we're going to use that, some people can use it. Why can't we all use it? Louisville has a losing record. But I do think that wake winning at Louisville. No, no, they won that game at home. But wake beating Louisville is a quality win that holds up better than Duke's best win. Yeah, absolutely. They also, like, comparatively, they killed Stanford by a much larger margin. Tom, you've been perusing not just the one through 25 at the top level, but going under the hood as well, taking a good look at where these teams are. There's some, I mean, there's a UCLA top 10 on one of these ballots. There is, there's a Missouri still down in the low 20s on some of these ballots. There's a, there's a lot to be able to pull apart here. What would you, what, what, what, what stood out to you? We're going to head down to San Antonio where for the San Antonio Express News, Greg Luca, is a voter. Greg, this week, you talk about resume rankings, you talk about power rankings, you talk about whatever you want, but the style of voter that Greg was this week was I've painted myself into a corner and I have absolutely no idea what to do. Oh, well, here we go. Because sounds like me in an argument with my family. Yeah, but you just got to keep swinging. Greg had Mississippi State 10th this week. This week. This week. Now, last week when they were undefeated. No, not last week. Now, that's not overly extreme compared to all voters because there were also voters who had the Bulldogs 11th. The problem is, or where things get weird, is that last week, Greg had Mississippi State 18th. So he moved them up eight spots after a 33-point home loss to Alabama. And when you look at the rest of his ballot, it's easy to figure out why he did this because he also moved Mizzou up from 19th, which was one spot behind Mississippi State last week, who they had just lost through by seven on the road. He moved the Tigers up to 11th. So when he did that, he thought to himself, well, I have to respect head to head. So I have to put Mississippi State at 10th, which is when you get just like, you can't just rank on head to head. Should head to head matter if they're close? Yes. But when you're looking at the overall resume, if you consider one team 11th and you have to put Mississippi State 10th ahead of them, you're just going to look like an absolute moron. If you did that after Mississippi State just suffered a 33-point loss, like there's nothing that happened in that game that suggested they should be 10th now if they were 18th last week. So you're either an idiot this week or you were an idiot last week. So you've really painted yourself into a corner with that one. That is the one that has really stood out. Another one that's got big, I'm stuck inside the Alamo vibes to it. That's just, I'm sorry, that's a little flavor. They're going to get me and I'm just going to hold on for as long as I can. And the other one that kind of stood out, and this is not really about the voter, this is about something that we have seen. And I'm going to do something strange here. I am going to give the enemy Ralph Russo some props here. Ralph who still is the shadow commissioner of the poll, I assume, and is still altering the results to deem his political world views. He stepped down from actually openly running the poll to become a voter in it. And while his ballot this week is still dumb, I'm going to leave that alone. Jvonne Edmonds left Utah off of his ballot entirely this week. Now it was a mistake, at least I'm assuming it was because he had them 17th last week. And he's had them on their his ballot every single week. So to have to leave them off this week, probably just they didn't play. He was going through putting his ballot in and just completely forgot to put the u-ts on there. The thing is though, this has been happening every week. Like we have seen Miami left off of multiple ballots. When Ralph ran the poll, if you did something like that, which was kind of like a eyebrow raising, huh? Are you sure? Ralph would contact you and say, hey, did you mean to not rank Miami? Did you mean to not rank Utah? I'm not sure who is in charge of the poll right now that, you know, Ralph, like who strings Ralph is pulling. But you should really start contacting voters when you notice that they left somebody off of their ballots or maybe you're just not even looking. I don't know what the case is, but this has been a problem every single week. And it's something they need to address because like you have jerks like us coming on podcasts or on social media and ripping these people new a-holes for these mistakes when it's probably something that could be easily fixed. Like you're an editor, be an editor, fix the mistake, not everybody's perfect, but it's your job to catch them. the process there is is certainly one to be able to keep an eye on. I've heard a lot of criticism too about the who the votes have gone to. And as I've dug into that, did you know that there are a lot of beatwriters who are not allowed by their job to be an AP poll voter? Yeah. If you work for the Gannet or Gannet, which by which by the way is also a massive conglomeration that's bought up all of the papers. So the idea that I mean this we're talking like proctoring gamble, you know, they go right at the time in terms of the the newspaper industry, which you know has its own it's own observations about the way things have gone over the last 20 to 30 years. But the consolidation there has meant that a lot of good beatwriters in college football minds are not allowed to be a people voters. And some of that stems back to when USA Today was running the coaches poll. And so that's like we have a lot of voters that potentially could be there. And so it does limit the amount of people who they could offer. I mean media in general is getting smaller, read local shop local whatever you want to say, but you need to you need to understand that even from the AP's editor standpoint, when they're handed out these votes, sometimes it can be hard for them to be able to fill out their roster because of silly. In my opinion, silly disqualifications of newspaper writers who are in these press boxes, who are attending these press conferences, who are like talking to coaches about these other teams and yet not allowed to vote in these rankings. Does USA Today still do the coaches poll? Yeah, and as Chuck points out in the chat, can that owns USA Today, which is probably the reason why. Yep. And that's a lot of it's a lot of newspapers and beatwriters across the country. So something else, you know, just to keep it a little bit of again, Ralph, this is not this is not this is not for your ballot. This is for work already done. Congratulations. Can we give a can we give chips and props for correctly calling techie dropping out? Decay, just it. Yeah, yeah, I don't know. No, I refuse. Well, again, it is like I don't enjoy telling you that a team won and then was going to drop out. I just pointed out that just because you're on one side of the fence doesn't mean that you're incapable of getting jumped by somebody else that's behind you. Right. And just to prove this point, but one of the things that I love is that the CBS 4138, we don't stop at 25. We extend this and we get to see literally with the average ballot ranking, what this is going on in that point of the ranking. So Mississippi State is at number 18 on the new CBS sports 138. Their average ballot ranking is 17.4. Okay. The next 12 teams all have rankings that are inside of the top 30. Wait a second. How do you have 12 teams for 10 spots? Because Iowa, USC Oklahoma State all have average ballot ranking in the 20s as in like 20, between 20 and 21. Pittsburgh 21.5, Duke 23, wait for us 23.75, Boise State, Houston and Kentucky all with average ballot rankings in the 24s. Guys, this is just a crowded, crowded point of college football. If you are stacking up not as a top 25, but as a full view of all the FBS teams, the difference between the 18th best team and the 30th best team is small. And when we pass out more than a dozen ballots to our experts from CBS sports to 24 seven sports, no one can agree on the order. And that's why it's led to all of this like consolidation clumping. I guess you could say of teams in that range. So yeah, guess what? SM you could win its next game and lose in the get pass. And after Pitt loses to Bill Belichick, they're going to get jumped. And like Houston could maybe win a game and lose anybody could get got right there in that point of the rankings. Some of us are silenced completely when it comes to their ballots. One me, they won't let me, you know, they don't let me put in my full 138. Well, this early in the year, not this early in the year. Because as you just said, it's excused the poll too much because my the results of that are a little bit different from the silly humans. One one more thing on this poll that I would just like to bring up because this is an example of something we talk about a lot. And it's not SEC bias. It's just number bias. Houston began the season ranked. Houston remains ranked. It has been ranked all year. It started at 23. It is currently at 22. I think there's a very good argument that if Houston had not been ranked to start the year, they're not ranked right now either because you look at their overall resume. They've got wins over Oregon state, which in hindsight looks like a better win than it did at the time, but still it's Oregon state. They have wins over Southern. They have wins over Georgia Southern and they have win over UCF team with a backup quarterback that they actually trailed 17 to nothing and they had to come back to win that game. They're they're the big the biggest thing on the resume is a close loss at Texas Tech. I would argue that other teams that aren't ranked like hell Kentucky the Kentucky team that dropped out of the poll probably deserves to be ranked more than Houston at this point. Wake forest deserves to be ranked more than Houston at this point. Like you can argue Nebraska Northwestern Duke Arizona Wisconsin Minnesota. These are teams that if you want to make arguments, I think your argument would maybe not be a glanslide, but I think it would fare pretty well compared to what Houston has done. So this is an example of I already had them ranked. I'm just going to keep them ranked. Do you think that's the case with Iowa compared with quality like with paired with quality loss? They were undefeated heading into the weekend. They lost to one of the best teams in the country. You're just going to put a governor on how hard you're going to eject them. Yeah. The Michigan, I think beating a Michigan brand helped, even though Michigan's not anywhere here is good. I think that beating I mean brands help preseason expectations help where you started helps. I think Minnesota with back-to-back wins over Washington, Michigan might have a better argument than Iowa, even though Minnesota has got the loss to Mississippi State. If we're just looking at the the wins side of this, but this is all brings up how the point and Juan and the tailgate was asking what is the 138? The CBS Sports 138 is CBS Sports's internal ranking of college football. We rank all 138 FPS teams. You can find it at CBS Sports.com. It updates every single Monday. We turn in our ballots on Sundays to be able to give our voters a little bit more time to digest the full landscape of college football. Ballots do 5 p.m. on Sundays. We update the rankings on Mondays. We encourage you to go and check it out. It's funny. You were talking about how closely balanced everything is. Iowa was what 14th or 16th last week. It could have been one voter who completely changed Iowa's ranking because if you go back the last week, Stephen Means had Iowa 5th on his ballot. This week, he had him 21st. Stephen Means business. Well, I mean, no, I'm perfectly, I'm perfectly okay with. I love how it changes week to week because he's obviously is updating his thought. It's just when you think of how tightly packed those teams in that area are one voter taking you from 5th to 621st. That's a 16 point drop in your poll. That's 16 points could be the thing that moves you two or three spots alone. I will not say what week it was, but it was called to my attention by a reader that there was a very strange adjustment for Yukon. And we went back and do you know what Yukon is right next to on the ballot? UCLA. Yeah. So for one ballot, one week, this season, what was supposed to go to a re like a surging UCLA team went to Yukon. And a fan was like, hey, guys, which of Yukon's wins led to this 30 point increase in your rankings? Again, you got it. Who's running the poll? Who's not? And look, and guess what, we went back and we made the adjustment. We got it fixed. But yeah, these to your point, small adjustments could lead to big changes in the rankings when you're dealing with this kind of stuff. All right. Coming up on the other side, Bud Elliott, projecting the playoff bracket or FWA team of the week and more next. This episode is brought to you by PNC Bank. If you've ever watched a football game with someone who doesn't normally, you might have been asked, like, what's the point of running the ball up the middle? In short, to the uninformed eye, these plays are boring, but they result in a lot of short reliable gains while managing the clock. It's just like why PNC uses a boring methodical approach because reliable gains while keeping an eye on the time are just as important for your money as they are in football. PNC Bank brilliantly boring since 1865 brilliantly boring since 1865 is a registered mark of the PNC Financial Services Group Inc. PNC Bank National Association member FDIC. Back here on the cover three podcast, Bud, you've run the model at the BudBot 7.9. I don't know what what Codex were on or hexa what the we were on on cloud last week because 5.5 was absolutely killing it and Codex was token hungry, so we were bouncing back and forth a little bit for sure. Oh wait, Codex is a real name? Yeah, Codex is the coding harness for GPT. Definitely. Okay, so if people who say the word Codex, they're talking about chat GPT and not clogged. Correct. And these are competitors? Yeah, for sure. And BudBot's got all of them feed up in the org chart to the buttbot at the top. All right, buttbot, what is the latest playoff projection looking like? Yeah, so we'll go ahead and pull this up. I hate how chalky this is, to be honest. I felt like this was not like a super sexy one, but I don't try to like rig this to where it's like, hey, social media go nuts, typically, you know, like if it fits me out a couple ones that are like really, really close in terms of percentage of likelihood, then I may pick the one that's like the most interesting for social, but you know, some version of this was coming up really often. I didn't want to finger on the scale, you know, so we have Texas is number one overall seed, losing once along the way, but beating Georgia in the SC championship game, Ohio State, run on the table to go 12 and one and win the big 10, they get the two seed, Notre Dame, this is a change from preseason. I think that Notre Dame has looked better than Miami has so far, ever so slightly. Probably, I've had to make a slight adjustment down for Miami due to all the injuries that they've suffered and who you have on the field certainly matters. And then I have Georgia taking that four spot at 11 and two. You know, look, the SEC, we clowned on them in the offseason for claim they were still the best conference, you know, given last year, right? But so far, this year they definitely look like the best league. So they do get five teams in in this run, five seed, Miami, you know, obviously lost Notre Dame, no shame in that, but not really other opportunities for quality wins on their schedule, given the k-walk at the AC gave them. All right, so they would fail, they would actually host Boise obviously. So I'm not going to say that's essentially a buy, but certainly the favorable draw there is the five seed continues to get in this current format. And then our six 11 matchup is the Gators at nine and three going to Indiana. Florida has a very difficult schedule by anybody's standards, but one of the more challenging schedules in the SEC. So I do think they're going to get in if they can go nine and three, especially if you can make a bowl game, right? If that's like your fifth best win, that's a hell of a resume. Assume they don't get like their doors blown off again twice by Texas and Georgia, which again, pretty hard scheduled there. Indiana 11 and two, obviously losing to Ohio State twice. All right. And then we have Bama, Bama going to Utah. So have Utah winning the big 12 at this point. And then we have Oregon heading down to Baton Rouge and playing LSU. So five SEC, three big 10 Notre Dame, one AC and one big 12. Thoughts, I've got a question, but I don't want to hog this DK time. Anything stand out here? Ask your question. Well, so for the Oregon Indiana of it all, right now, Oregon has one loss. Right now, Indiana has no losses. Where do you see the for Oregon, you lose to Ohio State, but then went out the rest of the way for Indiana? What are the two losses? So I actually like didn't do it like that. It just came out as like, hey, here's your project at record. But make sure the tiebreakers work. So it didn't give me like a you lose specifically to this team. But I do have it rigged or it's not rigged, but like set up to where like these have to make sense. Like there are certain combinations of SC teams that couldn't produce certain records. So like, obviously, like that wouldn't like like it actually simulates it out to where a record actually makes sense. Do you know what I'm saying there? Yeah. So you've got with Ohio State at 12 and one, Indiana at 11 and two. That means that they played for the big 10 title game. Oregon is out on the big 12 title game. So Ohio State picks up a loss somewhere between now and then, but then ends up getting. Oh, that's right. They've already got the loss to Texas. So they win all the rest of them. And then that includes the the wins. I guess so that means Ohio State beats Oregon for their second loss, but Oregon goes the rest of the way. Okay. Right. What's crazy is like in my track this week, isn't it? Yeah. No, I have some questions. I have some questions too. Where so the big 12, did I agree with you? Miami probably going to win. They're in the big 12 though. Where do you have? Do you have Texas tech undefeated losing and being left out to like no? No, no. I I think most of these big 12 teams are going to finish like nine and three 10 and two. Like the middle of the big 12 is not better than it was last year. But the top of the big 12 has come back to the pack in a pretty major way. Right. Yeah. I was just curious what the debate was. Nine and three Florida with who, you know, and if it's, you know, nine and 12 total cents or, you know, even 10 and two big 12 loser, I would say Florida would get in the head of them. Oh, yeah. Any any big 12 team with a two in the lost column. Yeah. Even if I think even if that comes in the big 12 championship game, I think they're out. Really? Unless BYU beats the Irish. Right. And that will change things like quite a bit. Yep. And then that would be another good chance to be able to update that one of their issues. Yes. With the big 12, right? Is if you take a look at this, hold on ahead this earlier. Chip Vampry was just second. Okay. Well, it's chip dance. Well, the I just don't know where where Baylor is. I was really looking for Baylor in that in that, you know, big 12 title representatives. I mean, so if we think there's eight teams that are still alive for the big 12, right? Which is probably the most generous reading, but if you can include Baylor among the eight teams, it does. Yeah. Right. So they don't have very many things to hang on their wall in the non-conference. Okay. So Oklahoma State certainly does. They beat Oregon. Everybody else though, like it's not you toss fault that Arkansas is this bad, but Arkansas is this bad. Text tech Houston, Kansas State, Arizona scheduled nobody in the non-conference, right? Like just zeros, basically. BYU gets Notre Dame. So if they win that, this is going to change things quite a bit. So that that that game has a bad as much playoff impact as any other game out there, I think. And then Baylor, you know, played Auburn lost to Auburn in a close game for sure, but Auburn's also what? Like a bottom three, bottom four at best, SEC team this year. So they don't have like the actual teams that are contending down the stretch to win the big 12. They don't have much in the non-conference in terms of wins or in terms of even games in about half these cases. Yeah. Like if when you look at the resume, it's like when you look at non-conference, it's not just that the SEC has the best overall record by a wide margin. They just also have the better wins. Like if you look at the opponents they've beaten, like the ACC and the big 12, all their wins have probably pretty much come against outside that Oregon win. Like you were just saying, they've pretty much come against teams that will probably be struggling to make a goal. Yeah. And like Mississippi state killed Minnesota. And then Minnesota turns around to be to Michigan, you know. As always, we will continue to update this one week by week. There was some chatter in the tailgate about North Dakota state, you know, where does North Dakota state fit? And that we'll see, you know, Boise state, as we mentioned, does have those the good win against Western Michigan, the good win, obviously against Memphis and then playing Oregon competitively, something that got Boise state literally to the playoff just a couple years ago. So the committee's got a little bit of previous there, but they left the FCS and but they didn't leave us the champs. No, the reigning champions at the FCS level. Well, that that was Montana state and Montana state heading into Friday had a 19 game winning streak. Wow, 19 wins in a row. The Idaho Vandals had zero wins heading into Friday on this season. Montana state number one team in the country come into the Kibbe dome 14.4th quarter lead. And it was not enough because the FWA is going to announce today that this week, the pop tarts bowl crazy good team of the week is the Idaho Vandals for storming back in the fourth quarter. The game winning touchdown, the game winning two point conversion to walk it off with a 35 to 34 win. I mean, if you look at the way that Joshua would held things together, he completed 19 of 25 passes for the game for 315 yards, two touchdowns and a rushing touchdown. And it was an 80 yard drive capped by a 25 yard touchdown pass before would himself put the team on his back. Santa Kibbe dome bananas and was able to give the Vandals a huge win in this early part of the year. No, and we partner with the football writers association for America. It was an easy decision because we are members of the football writers association of America. But to really get into this award has been cool because while there are 109 different programs that have received the honor of the FWA team of the week brought to you by the pop tarts bowl this year. This is just the fourth ever FCS team to be able to go and earn it. They joined Appalachian State in 2007. Jeez, what happened in that game? Oh, North Dakota State in 2013 and Yale, which did it twice in both 2014 and 2025. Congratulations to the Idaho Vandals. I mentioned that it was some late night Friday night action Friday night. In terms of number of games on the slate, first number of good games on the slate might be up there as one of the better Friday nights. You had the Virginia Tech pit ending that you had. Of course, the Northwestern absolute thrashing of Penn State. And then Idaho capping it off with the upset win against Montana State. As Brad in the tailgate says, you just don't walk into the Kibbe dome and expect to walk out with the win. No, sir, They're called vandals. They're called vandals. You're not getting out the same way that you came in. That's what Montana State learned in our congrats to the Pop Tarts Bowl. Crazy good team of the week. The Idaho vandals, he can't have felt good. You know, the news came in from the football writers and I was like, you know what? Heck yeah. Let's, we're not going to stay top level all of football, right? Spread the love around. What is that? That's what college football is all about. I mean, we get, you know, there's a lot of people, but we were just talking about the AP top 25 brand bias. We don't have any brand bias here. No, not at all. You, you over, you snapped that 19 game winning streak. You take down the number one team at the FCS level and you do it on your home field with the stones to get that game winning touchdown and go for two and walk it off that we absolutely love to see it. So congrats to the Idaho vandals. I know that they will be getting their, complimentary pop box of pop Tarts delivered to the football team, as well as a commemorative game ball to celebrate this honor as the pop Tarts bowl crazy good team of the week from the football writers association of America. Coming up on the other side, we go under the hood, more takeaways from week five and more, back here on the cover three podcast. And now it's time for the practical plays of the week brought to you by P and C bank, where we highlight the practical plays that make the biggest difference. The best game plans are built on consistency, not shortcuts, smart and deliberate financial decisions, help build a strong financial foundation and lead to the most meaningful wins. There's no need to chase risky ventures or fall for quick fixes at P and C bank. They help you keep your money simple and stable so that you can live with confidence that your future is on solid ground. We talked about this a little bit on Saturday night, but DK, I wanted to come back to you to hear your thoughts on the way that a Notre Dame offense that was dealing with some rainy conditions. They decided to make it practical. They decided to make it simple. Sometimes your finances are in a storm left over from Hurricane Polo as sweeping across the country. Then you just need to lean on your bread and butter 241 rushing yards against the tar heels on 45 carries for 5.4 per attempt. It was their most productive day on the ground. It was one of their best performances running the football and they needed it. Both in terms of being able to lean on this North Carolina defense and a game that after the kickoff return had gotten a little dicey, but then also to make sure that you didn't have any mistakes with the conditions. What you make of the fighting Irish in their win against the tar heels? I think they continue to impress. They find different ways to win. CJ Carr had his best statistical game. He made some big throws. The one to Jordan Faison, which was wide open. He started to a spot. Faison makes a diving catch there at the end zone to come down with that one. I thought it was complete domination. Billy Edwards is going to need a cold plunge and some extra ice because every time it looked like he was throwing or dropping back to pass, he was getting killed. But I thought Notre Dame, they're shaping right in the form like we all thought they've passed every test along the way, but this was a tricky spot for them to just get it in, get it done. It was a really strong performance for the fighting Irish. Notre Dame fans certainly encouraged by CJ Carr's performance 21 for 29. You mentioned in those rainy conditions. Got to check in with our quarterback here that could you see it? Just watching him throw the ball, whether you know, what allowed him to be able to still be so accurate, even as he was dealing with slippery footballs and things. Yeah. I mean, I think he was kept his composure and they gave him good protection. He did get the run game and he just, you know, was not phased by the conditions. You know, just I don't know if it was his grip was nice and lucid and squeezed it too tight. He kept that C shape on top. It's supposed to come down here with a U. He'd probably kept the C on top. But and it probably helps it. It's not exactly 78 and sunny every day in South Bend year round. So he's played in some conditions that he's probably like, yeah, this isn't that bad. Yeah, that's true. Great, great point right there. Notre Dame playing in the rain and getting it done. True, true, even though the scoreboard got close because Notre Dame was with leaning on the physicality of that run game, it just one didn't look like they were going to get too many stops long drives, just for the practical stuff that made it easy to name Notre Dame, the recipient for the practical plays of the week. Every single Monday, we like to go under the hood for one last look at the week that was we call it one further review. Yeah, we're terrible calls, do you want to go ahead and jump in after further review? All right, Tom, we are a podcast that certainly acknowledges and and celebrates the science and meteorology. You've got a weather, weather, UFR for us. It's not really UFR. It's just, you know, you brought up like the conditions Notre Dame was playing in in the sponsored segment. I didn't want to bring it up during a sponsored segment. That's a pro scene, but like, can we all agree that Hurricane Nolo and Polo are terrible names for hurricanes? Like, I say this is somebody who lives in a place of the country that I don't really have to worry about hurricanes or then maybe it'll bring a rainy day or two to my door that kind of talk, but like Nolo and Polo are the least intimidating names of all time for hurricane. Like, if you tell me I have to like protect my house from Hurricane Yolo or Polo, like, I'm not scared of that. That's nothing. That thing's going to be weak as hell. We need to give it real name something that will actually scare people. Something that'll make you get prepared. I just, I don't know what we're doing there. I don't know how the system works. I know that like, isn't it like one of them's male names, one of them's female names, and then they just go in alphabetical order. Yep. Yep. So how the hell did we come to Nolo and Polo? That's pretty far down the list, too. Like, have we had that, did I miss all the hurricanes we've had this year? They mostly been in the Pacific. Yeah. Yeah. And this was the last one from that activity. Yeah. I forgot whether we're in a Nino or Nino, but whatever we are in has led to most of the activity being out of the Pacific. It's an, it's an El Nino. Okay. It's also really. Oh, yeah, keep, put your hurricane, hurricane names. Hurricane tax was pretty strong. I love hurricane. I loved Hurricane Marco should have come before hurricane. Yeah. Yeah. The El Nino is a bit of a really big deal if you live in like the other hemisphere. Yeah. If, and there was, there was something at one point where there was a little bit of a push at the whatever national association to, to mix up the names a little bit. So, you know, perhaps there's a, perhaps there's another culture that Yolo and Polo are more common in. I mean, like, like, Tom, it's, it's so funny because there's really not anything intimidating, but the two hurricanes of my childhood that had the biggest impact on Raleigh, North Carolina and Eastern North Carolina were Fran and both. So like, neither of those were like, you know, like, like, that's something like it's like, Oh, crap. Here comes Bertha. You know, she's not, you know, you don't want to see Bertha when she's angry, Chip. We had Irma and Charlie. They were pretty angry. And Wilma Wilma Wilma Wilma. That's an angry name. You've never known a happy Wilma. Floyd, Floyd hit Rocky Mount really, really hard. That's a good point on that one. Floyd was in 2000. Bertha and Fran, I think we're both 96, 97 around there. Hurricane Andrew ended up hitting Charlotte. Then they hit Florida. Oh, yeah. That was my freshman year. We had some families had to stay with us in our dorm because they were displaced. The, that was, that was the worst one. I think in the last 35 years, that changed building codes like forever. Yeah. Yeah. All the meteorology talk around here is, is concerned that I, and there is no science here. So I do not respect this theory, but that because we didn't get hit by Hurricane, now we're going to get a nice storm. I don't play that game, but that, that sounds like roulette. Blacks do. Look at all those red numbers on the board. Blacks do, you know, quite sure if that's how, how, how weather works. Okay. Let's, let's start breaking this down in terms of upon further review under the hood continues. But would you like to take us to spin through the group of six title races? Because you had Boise State in your projected college football playoff bracket that would be Boise State, according to the record that you had winning the rest of their games, winning the pack 12. But there's some, there's some feisty competitions. And I noticed as I was putting together my week six worksheet, some fun games in week six that will also help decide that. Is that what brought it to your attention? It is. Yeah. All right. So we will start in comfort to us X. We have two big ones there on Wednesday night. Now, these are not knockout games, but they're like, important. Yeah. They're, they're really important. So Jack State goes to Kennesau State. It's not really a knockout game to make the title game, obviously, but it's, it's close. In New Mexico state of the FIU, that's a tough travel spot for, for the Aggies for sure. FIU to me has looked like like a pretty good QC team this year. All right. And then we also have Missouri State at West Kentucky, right, which West Kentucky is, is done done. Missouri State is like hanging on. And then we also have what South Owl at Arkansas State in the Sunbelt. That's also on Thursday. To me, that is a knockout game for, for that side of the division. Like, there's enough good teams there that if you lose that one, I think the climb back is, is pretty prohibitive. Also, it's seven on Thursday. Houston at Liberty? I don't think Sam Houston's knocked out if they lose this and obviously like there are it's kind of imply that but that's a major game if Liberty beats them and they probably should you can kind of stamp Liberty to go ahead and make the Qs of championship game and in USF at UTSA I was listing out how many teams are still alive here in each conference right? So the Mac I can plausibly get to seven Qs eight pack 12s five sun belts nine although really like you could say it's just one because JMU right? Well yeah and also state. Also remember sun belt still using division so when Bud says how many teams are still alive that also means to win your division like the sun belt west has to have a winner that's going to go out there and so there's lots of teams that are still in the mix there mountain west is five American I started to run down I was like hold on I'm just going to write who's not alive so Navy UAB and rice are dead right as far as what went in the conference like no shot no path at least in in my model like unless they just get a bunch of NFL transfers or something out of nowhere in the American know this this USF at UTSA game is a pretty big deal like I don't know if y'all see this like USF fans or I can live it about how their program looks right now at least locally like UCF fans kind of are too and I'm like I kind of think UCF has happened a decent year relative to I mean they're they're on preseason like if UCF makes a bowl that's a nice year for them you know but obviously like they joined kind of around the time Houston did right and Houston looks better than they do and they they they see themselves as a former you know G5 that you know now is competing in the big 12 and expect a better Houston you know USF's offense is uh is a mess right like really and you look at it it's like okay I know they're spending money who did they hire who's ever called plays without a massive talent advantage right like kind of makes you wonder if they maybe they shake that up and get a little more you know creativity there in the offseason um and then we have a couple more here too so I think Brian Hartline's a huge fan of the cover 3 podcast so we'll reach out to him Brian you know cut like that hotline playing well we'd love to hear that defense is nasty though defense is not I don't you must have could still win the American like that is a really good defense they and they could be you talked about money that they spent they could be like just click it into place away from being able to look like a much better football team it's just on one side of the ball it can be really dreadful yeah uh and then Friday night Wyoming at San Jose Wyoming's obviously not in this but uh San Jose I think that's probably a knockout game for them uh and then Iowa State at BYU that's not a G6 game but it is a Friday night game so I put it on the schedule um that's probably a knockout game for BYU if they were to drop that just given who else they still have to play and the way the type rickers will go within that league again I don't expect BYU to lose Iowa State I think their four minutes should work pretty well you can probably get ranger to throw you some mistakes but just one to monitor there yeah man look we got some really exciting G6 races down the stretch here this is gonna be fun yeah um Tom you've uh you have provided concern maybe about Ohio State's over reliance on Jeremiah Smith you're on a pun further review but now I think it's time to do some celebration yes we got to be you know we got to follow the FCC regulations of uh of criticism and confidence and and and my oh my uh do you have something for us here for the buckeye star yeah let's let's separate the things my my concern for Ohio State is that or help consider to prediction like if they lose in the playoffs it'll be because somebody figured out how to slow down Jeremiah Smith and they had no counter punch doesn't mean Jeremiah Smith is an awesome and it doesn't mean I don't understand why they spam the hell out of it but oh my god are they spamming the hell out of him I looked at this he clearly he leads the nation in receiving yards but I also did it yards per route so it's just it's not just volume it is efficiency so you're if you're watching right now you could see on the chart the x-axis is yards per route the y-axis is yards receiving Jeremiah Smith is in his own country he's not in his own zip code he's not in his own state he's not in his own territory he is an island in the middle of the pacific ocean that you need seven flights to catch to get to you need to island hop just to get there it is remarkable see those little dots that are close to them like those are guys like Malachi Tony like other really good players who can't even see Jeremiah from where they are in the chart he's just he is like Pluto when you put when you look at the sky at night so that is insane and I also I tweeted out a fun stat just to kind of you know see how many people would catch it and it was funny lowest receiving yards among powerful schools you can see on the chart their Duke eight ninety one blah blah but you go down these schools and then it's 67th is Jeremiah Smith with 823 which is more than UCLA and BYU have teams and I want to shout out the one person on Twitter who responded to me and scolded me for this because they said I needed to provide the context that UCLA and BYU have only played four games so I'm sorry I should have pointed out that UCLA and BYU with both which both have fewer receiving yards than Jeremiah Smith does by himself have only played four games this year okay Jeremiah's played five it's not really fair to compare those teams to him no no no I'll listen you you were classy here let me reverse let me reverse or you know you on this one if we actually count the number of quarters that have been played because Jeremiah Smith has sat out true the fourth quarter of two blowout wins I don't know if it's that big of a difference I think the amount of minutes that have been played on the field Jeremiah Smith might be much closer to UCLA and BYU than those fans wanted to point out you know it might even be a more hilarious chart yard receiving yards by receivers he might go up like 10 spots yeah oh how many teams because even on that list you've got some guys who like you had a lot of tie it in and running back yeah right I was about to say teams yeah this could be a sponsored segment time like if we if we get a camera company so we can talk about like how far we have to zoom out on the graphic for the outlier player the week right or like like the the zoom out player of the week or maybe like zoom if they want to sponsor us player hey pick it pick it like we could do that weekly did you see would Brian Day set after the game kind of gave Julian saying a little hard time about throwing two him in triple coverage no because he was kind of joking but I mean he did it means like it was not a good read he's about one over the middle right I mean there were literally three dudes around him it was like oh my gosh there were a couple throws seeing in person and just watching Jeremiah in person I was kind of because there's been a trend with Malachi Tony as who's the better receiver and they're totally different styles and I'd love to see Malachi Tony play his way back into this conversation but what I witnessed in person with Jeremiah Smith was one of the best performances I've seen in person like just by an athlete in general it was that impressive I mean the one there was one a third down plan the left where it was kind of they had two dudes on him and Julian saying just put it right by the sideline he just grabbed it and brought it in the touchdown before the half was like he just I mean but you could tell there was so much fear and they like the defensive back because you don't want to get beat deep and then he tried to tackle him and he just overpowered him it was it was impressive to see in person it really was I think I didn't I share your comment on the instant reaction show just the idea you know like among the most because you texted us you were like at this this guy in person is just another level and it made me think college football players have gotten so much better and Jeremiah Smith almost seems old school in the way that he's head and shoulders above everyone else which means he's even that much better than some historically great players and what a what a separator what what a joy it is for him to be able to go and watch it yeah we're you're seeing on the screen he's just rewriting the Ohio State record books Danny you threw passes to Randy Moss in practice when when he wasn't eligible to enforce it wouldn't let him play because the weed thing right yeah like I've seen him I've seen people say that he is the best since Randy Moss and I would agree with that sentiment I don't know if I'm willing to go past Randy just yet Randy was a little bit longer and a little bit lengthier maybe didn't have the power that Jeremiah has sort of in traffic but there is a reason why they say you got most still and like and he made some really good catches in traffic I maybe he has that level he can go to eventually and maybe Randy wasn't there in college but he kind of was making those kind of catches so like I would say he's the best best that I've seen since Randy Moss in person I can't believe you're not willing to go and say Jeremiah Smith is the is better than the guy who's probably the best receiver all time like at speed yeah somebody that said that he hopes that Jeremiah is not a bust in the NFL like Marvin Harris and Jr. was I would say I don't think Jeremiah will be because I have actually seen him break a tackle in college that's right Ma's are ready my call it touchdown yesterday hey his name is name ain't bulldozer Marf all right right he can just go out there run past him yeah I mean just absurd company to keep right there that we are having real debates with someone who is throwing passes to Randy Moss and and Danny's like yeah like this is these this is the company Jeremiah Smith apparently apparently keeps so very very fun stuff we kind of was like I actually Ryan there's some cause and effect there in that comment yeah I thought I thought Iowa had a pretty good game plan which was kind of keep him underneath don't give up the touchdown play and it was very much bend don't break then before the half he gets touchdown and then the game the the long, you know, uh, put it in. where he struck the highs and that kind of that was the just backbreaker they didn't I mean you gave him up but if they didn't give up those two that was probably the game plan was just keep him in front of you you know which I would say that would be my advice to like don't let him give up the big play to not given the big touchdown it is easier said than done you've get you got the the awesome Iowa hat on any other takeaways from the visit Iowa City yeah I would put it on my bucket list if anybody has it was my first time there to Kinnick and Iowa City it is a bucket list item fans were awesome uh it was loud probably one of the louder big 10 schools that I've been to they were incredible and then it really is you hear about the children with the children's hospital it really is special I mean it is like one of those moments where everybody's kind of got a tear in their eye and you can see the kids waving but even more than that I didn't realize they did a kid captain they had a girl you know she was probably 13 years old Eliana she was at you know and they introduced her before the game and she goes out and everybody stands up and they read what she's going through and like she had like 10 or 11 surgeries but just a big smile on her face I actually was right next to her when the crap when the team ran out the tunnel and uh it's got to see her and her parents it's uh it's really really special it is definitely a bucket list item if you can get to Kinnick Stadium for a game and there were a lot of Buckeye fans who were you know hadn't been there since 2017 a lot of them were there for the first time and you know they were impressed too it's really it was really special also just very fun town to be 21 it yeah yes um how was that was Chris Hassel recognizable was he was that was going to be one of my upon for the reveal yeah come on let's go that um there is a Mount Rushmore of Iowa personalities and I would put Caitlin Clark I would put Nile Kinnick I would put Chuck Long and I would put Chris Hassel on there I kid you not I am not joking we went and like I've been to Columbus and the big I've been to Big Ten Championship game with Cardell Jones everywhere you're a Cardell Cardell I've been you know with Alabama and Damien Harris and it's Damien oh yeah roll tide same exact reaction when Chris Hassel walks around Iowa City it's Iowa everywhere hey Hassel what's going he is a legend celebrity in Iowa City and I am not I am not embellishing no one I and Graham were with us we were like what is going on here like this guy is big time I it was very cool bleak no I mean it speaks to like I don't know the relationship with the college sports he puts so much into Iowa and how many Iowa fans are able to to get that kind of you know that kind of representation somebody who's just always thinking about everything from the Iowa point of view we have fun with them when we go on HQ you know like little needles little comments like no one was gonna get him going but he pours that out for Iowa fans and they love him for it he's like on a bus probably I don't know if I saw that but he was definitely I got to know who he was yeah like two guys named Chris right his podcast that he does with Chris Williams like yeah I will say no if you want to see what a true fan he is we went to dinner Thursday night the night we got in there and I think I told you guys saw Tim Lester it was the boy it was Reese Davis Stanford Steve Pete Damell and then there were a couple other people and and so we couldn't see kind of the corner and Hassel was like trying to see him's like oh my gosh he's like oh my gosh oh my gosh Caitlin no then McCollum he's like then McCollum's here he's like oh my gosh he's like what am I gonna what am I gonna do if he comes by should I say hi do you think I can ask him for a picture like he was getting nervous he said something that man was driving that man was driving his basketball team in a sprinter van like four years ago exactly and then what was funny is we couldn't see the back corner of the room and there was like is it Sabin with them and I was like I don't think Sabin gets in this early and say we're like go say hi and find out who it is someone upset hi to Reese and it was Tim Lester was having them day two and so then after dinner Tim Lester is one of the coolest dudes around we were hanging at the bar watching some of the football that was on and he just hung out for about 15 minutes and just answering questions and Chris was pepperonum we were talking ball and it was really cool it was great very very cool awesome awesome coverage from Iowa City very cool stuff anything else UFR you want to make sure we get to we've got a wagon announcement I make sure we want to get to before we get out of here but then anything else from you I have one but I can wait a week but I could be real quick on it I might have been wrong DJ lagway might be able to save David around his job five touchdowns late night against Arizona State I was going to make sure that gets a mention I want to see it a little bit more because it's been a little bit of this and it also he has to stay healthy but that could be sort of a breakout game for his confidence in himself his teams confidence in him that was impressive and I'm and maybe found his level you know like maybe found a good spot found a system that works for him we'll see if you can keep it going the standard no I could tell you right there we are not meeting the standards that we are going for you want to break out it was a breakdown like Arizona State is down bad right now yeah are you about to mention that but well kind of but you you just did all like circling back to the Ohio State run game before that final driver they were just kind of salt and everything away I had a for 19 successful runs and 11 unsuccessful like design runs and three of the ones that run successful were four yards on first down oh so they like attack which are like not does that like you know if you got in five it would have gone to the column so like I maybe like moving around and running back so our helping Ohio State a little bit here like let's shift in around those responsibilities with Jacobi stepping in from Bo a little bit have they considered handing the ball off to Jeremiah Smith that'll help him with the yak it just won't count as yak yeah exactly Tom any announcement from the wagon oh any one last question here is Arizona State fixable or we just going to check in with Kenny and see what he can do you know getting in getting into his team over the next couple weeks see if he can pull them out because that team is underperforming their talent and Kenny's calling it out he's taking responsibility I mean that's that's Dan Lannings former offensive coordinator given the same kind of Dan Lannings explanation after the Oklahoma State loss like all right I'm going to take responsibility for this but no this is not good like this I agree with you guys in the room this is not good no excuses do you think Arizona State can turn this thing around or is it just going to be a just a tough season of may either things didn't click the way we had hoped the performance isn't there what's what's the path forward for the sun devils it's pulling up their schedule here um we get Hawaii this week so that they'll they'll get it fixed there didn't they have a tough stretch uh Texas Tech Kansas State BYU back to back to back to back that's challenging and then they get kind of a software finish a little bit like it you know get Colorado UCF that's at UCF those at the space game like no matter it's all the time to say just tie it they just tie the space game they did the space game the space game is always the Houston that was that right well that was that Houston so like yeah UCF's going to have its own space game they always have the space game with the uniforms it's usually nicer weather late in the year like you know apparently there's bad blood between the two can claim the space game I got all that with these eight doosable on the pics let's go a lot of bad blood you know you said that space game it makes sense but okay everybody trying to lay claim to the moon I Tom is it time to time to make this announcement I don't know who it's going to be but I'm excited I just was informed that the wagon committee has an announcement the wagon committee has an announcement we have a wagon on our hands gentlemen and ladies were listening I had three teams on wagon watch that it kind of separated themselves from the rest of the pack going into this week's game and then you know one of these teams just really solidified itself with its performance on Saturday they went out there and they did what you want to see a wagon do against a team that you're supposed to do it too so I've decided to make the declaration congratulations to Jason Eck and the new Mexico Lobos you are officially a G D wagon it's not just that they're four and one overall with their one loss was to Oklahoma on the road a game to six the game in which they had a chance to win it in the fourth quarter that is their you know so your new Mexico I know Oklahoma's not the Oklahoma of last year but still the Lobos nearly beat the Sooners in Norman for the love of God there are also five and oh against the spread they're winning games by an average of 32.8 points per game they're covering spreads by 19.6 points per game they are a G D wagon just we're betting the Lobos every single week from here on out congratulations boys that's all you get no copyrights congratulations to Jason Eck and the Lobos it is uh that is like the truest definitely didn't you have six JMU as a as a wagon back in the day like it was just yeah when you are just at that level and you're mean and you are just kicking the tar out of everybody it's performance in a mindset is really what it comes down to and they have both yep 61 to seven winners against UTEP from from over the weekend that's uh that that certainly will get you attention on the wagon status um one last but do you have anything else from - Yeah, one tap. - This is more of an ongoing conversation, but I wanted to at least check in on it, especially since all four of us are together. We wondered about whether or not there would be any movement on the coaching carusso, whether South Carolina would decide to make a decision about Shane Beamer. Danny, do you have that one as like a win, not if, at this point, are we just moving forward as though South Carolina's gonna open? - Yes, probably. I think they'll probably give 'em a little time because of the goodwill and because they like 'em as a good guy, but the schedule is not getting any easier. It's hard to envision this thing turning around. You can tell by the press conferences it's getting a little bit uncomfortable. It just, yes, I would say it's when, not if. - Did TCU rise to the hot seat consideration for any of y'all over this weekend? - They were kind of already there. If you've got an offensive leaning coach and the offense isn't doing good, you better have numbers in the wind. If you don't have numbers in the stat sheet, you better have numbers in the wind column. If you were somebody like Major Hay is an offensive coach and TCU's offense is not good right now. - An offensive minded head coach who broke the glass and brought in a new offensive coordinator and a new offensive style that is not working either. - Yeah, those are ones where I was like, okay, I mean, again, Sonny Dykes did sign an extension, but if there's an appetite to be able to still swallow that buyout and go into the marketplace, one of the reasons why I heard that maybe there would not be a quick trigger on firing Shane Beamer was the lack of competition in the coaching marketplace with this cycle, that if the projection is gonna be, that it's gonna be a little bit of a slower cycle, you don't need to be the first one to jump in and send the signals and get the search started. So they could get the shadow search, kind of start working on things behind the scenes before the dominoes really start to fall, but if Luke Fickles got Wisconsin moving in the right direction, Magnorvel pounded Virginia, and all of a sudden you're like, okay, sure. If they go beat Louisville, now all of a sudden we're not gonna think that that's gonna open. And USC avoided total disaster against Washington. It's like, we haven't quite had the moment that's gonna, I think, inspire all the dominoes to start to fall, but of course, all those things could change very, very quickly. Is there any other hot seat situations that rose to your attention over the weekend that we should continue to monitor this week? - I mentioned it on Saturday night, Kyle Wittingham. This could be a one and done. - Yeah. - I mean, if you're the big 10, you cannot afford that mission look like this. - No. - The only team that they've scored more than 20 points against was UTEP. And they still scored less than New Mexico did against UTEP. - Yeah, New Mexico completely dog walked UTEP. - Yeah. - Yeah. - So did Oklahoma. - Oh, Loxley. - If Syracuse had lost the Yukon, I don't know if they got the money for it, but that was gonna be kind of embarrassing. - Does beating them in overtime really like fix it now? Like, no, but like look, it's like for the state. Like, you don't really believe that Norvelle's gonna get this turned around, but like if you can sell it for one more year, kick the can down the road, you know, it's really a marketing game, right? - I, go ahead. - No, I'm, that was it. - I know, I know inside the Syracuse Athletic Department with some confidence, there was a very clear out view of the schedule and that it would not mess, there would, it's not like they were expecting there to be a certain record, right? And that would, that would deem whether or not this was gonna be a successful season. But I do know that they're gonna be paying attention to the quality of the play, you know, and that was, they let Yukon back into that game and almost blew it. - Yeah, that was, that's pretty bad. - They got outclassed by Pitt. I mean, if we start to stack more games like this, then there's two different ways for and eight could look for the orange. There's a for and eight that says like, okay. All right, this is tough season, tough schedule. Like, hopefully we get a better draw and then there's a for and eight that's like, how in the world did we get to four? So, that would be something to look at. - Coaching change or staff change? If Georgia Tech goes three and nine. - Oh, staff change. - Staff change. - Don't you think? - I think so, but I don't know so. But some kind of change, if that thing is gonna go south, it looks. - 'Cause didn't he just get re-up too? When he was a game was coming up. I thought he did. I mean, I could be wrong, but I know his name was coming up for some of the jobs. - And Georgia Tech also had an athletic director turnover over the last couple of years too. Here's the thing, but you ask that. And immediately my says, well, Georgia God see is his guy. - Right. - So you say head coach change or staff change, maybe it's stubborn head coach, who doesn't want to make a staff change 'cause it's his guy and then that sets the table. Maybe not for anything this year, but at least for a real judgment coming in the year ahead. Because in Georgia Tech, we'll see them back in action against Duke. They've got, I mean, they got a week to fix things. - Yeah, they've got a new one. - It's not a game to accept for one. Like, they'll be favored over BC at home. And they're at the pit, they're at the Hokies. They host Louisville, they're at Clemson. They host Wake and they go to Georgia. - They'll probably get one of two of those, I guess. - Yeah, it's BC. - They may not go three and nine, but. - I mean, I'm kind of tempted to sprinkle them against Duke just because that's one of those, like, Duke's always-- - They always see things. - Duke's always good for a game that they don't deserve to lose, you know? - Yeah. - Their only win is Mercer. - And that's not last year's Mercer, which apparently provided all the good players at the FES level. - Now the Colorado watch. - Worse, they don't know. - I mean, that Colorado watch looked terrible at the time. - I know, but it looked terrible. - The Colorado win looked terrible at the time. - Tech was lucky that the game was as close as it was. - Correct. - We were sitting here talking about all that great work that Colorado's defensive line had because they weren't pushed around by Brink Kee's group. More evidence on Brink Kee's group and Colorado's defensive line suggests that maybe it's the Yellow Jackets that are falling short of those pre-season expectations. - I thought Colorado played well defensively against Tech until the damage is broke. I mean, like you throw a pick six, let literally is caught in your Inzo. It's a little tough to do. - Yeah. - I don't know what's gonna happen at Colorado. That's a whole other. - So that will be an emergency episode we should do. - I'll tell you who's fault it's not. He'll tell you who's fault it's not. - He'll tell you who's fault it's not. - Yeah. - I got no idea. Summary:

” Playoff projections feature Texas and Ohio State as top seeds, with tight matchups like Oregon vs.

FAQs

The CBS Sports 138 is an internal ranking of all 138 FBS college football teams. It updates every Monday and provides a broader view of the college football landscape than the AP Top 25, showing how tightly packed the middle of the rankings is.

Small changes in individual voters' rankings can significantly impact the overall standings, as a single ballot can shift a team by tens of points, especially in a tightly packed section of the rankings where teams are close in strength and resume.

The FWA Team of the Week honors standout performances, such as the Idaho Vandals' dramatic fourth-quarter comeback against Montana State, highlighting underdog wins and resilient play in college football.

The AP Poll faces criticism for potential biases, such as resume-based rankings, head-to-head decisions, and inconsistencies in voter behavior. Some voters, like Greg Luca, have made extreme shifts in rankings that raise questions about consistency and logic.

The Idaho Vandals earned the honor after a dramatic, fourth-quarter comeback against Montana State, including a game-winning touchdown and two-point conversion, showcasing resilience and strong team execution under pressure.

While not explicitly called out, the discussion highlights 'number bias'—such as Houston maintaining its ranking despite a weak resume—suggesting the poll may favor teams with early rankings or strong early wins, rather than objective performance.
