The Cover Three Podcast highlights a pivotal weekend in college football, focusing on the controversial clock decision in the Michigan-Western Michigan game, which sparked widespread debate over replay transparency and officiating consistency. The Big Ten’s failure to implement a live Command Center review system—similar to the ACC’s model—intensified criticism, with experts pointing to potential human error in clock usage as a root cause. Western Michigan’s leadership responded with commendable grace, using the incident as a moment of reflection and growth, setting a powerful example in collegiate sports communication. The discussion also turns to Notre Dame’s decisive 41-13 victory over Wisconsin, where a strong second-half run game and offensive line performance pulled the team away from a shaky first half. However, analysts note a lack of a standout playmaker to elevate the offense, raising concerns about long-term competitiveness. The podcast also examines broader conference performances, including the SEC’s dominant start and the ACC’s struggles with a weak schedule and inconsistent results, while criticizing the lack of high-impact playmakers in key programs. Ultimately, the episode underscores the growing need for transparency, consistency, and strategic depth in college football to meet modern expectations, especially in an era of high stakes and widespread public scrutiny.

Crying through it all, smiling through it all. This is our life." Yes, we'll have much more on Michigan, Western Michigan, and more. We will have reaction to Sunday's action, which included a really, really fun finish between Ole Miss as they get the win against Louisville, only win against an AP ranked team all week long, belongs to the Ole Miss Rebels. So congratulations to you. Now also, we will be discussing Notre Dame, grading their performance in the win in Lambo Field against Wisconsin. Does Washington want us to talk about the Apple Cup? I don't know, we can get to that in so much more. But DK, speaking of our friend, Bobby, in the tailgate, first word to you on what was probably the story, the story, we thought it was going to be Lane Kiffin. But I think the story of College Football of the Weekend was the finish between Michigan and Western Michigan. The conversation has been robust. It has been ongoing. You're in Tallahassee. So we'll get to our state SMU here in a little bit. As I said, the talk of your walk around last night, still talk of the town, even in Tallahassee? People are still in disbelief of what we saw with our eyes. You guys crushed it on the post-game reaction show. Totally agree with everything you said. I don't know the only way to fix this. And I think this is something the Big Ten should do immediately. And the only thing that would have avoided this whole thing was to do with the ACC has done for a year now. And the Big Ten is dabbling in it, doing it sometimes on Friday nights. But if you have the Control Command Center live, and it's somebody who's been in the broadcast booth, you're in that position, and you're talking about what you think is supposed to happen. And it made it look egregiously worse because the broadcasters and their rules expert are like, man, it looks like zeros, looks like zeros on the clock. And so then that creates our-- what we all saw with our eyes were like, oh, it came over. Then they're coming back, and they really never got an explanation of exactly why there was an extra second put back on the clock. But from the minute there was the review process, if you take out those broadcasters, guessing what they think, and you just went the Command Center, I don't think it would be anywhere near its controversial, because we would have seen it. They would have said, here's the clock. Now, that's if you believe the numbers that they're putting out, if you believe that, which, again, is part of the problem, because it was two hours later, that it just looks bad. But I think if I'm a powerful commissioner, if I'm a group of six commissioner, I am calling my TV network saying, we have got to do the live Command Center, so we don't find ourselves in that situation. That was the biggest egregious mistake besides Western Michigan getting screwed. Yeah. You're right. You do have to-- I think in this era of where we are, not just the big 10, I think every sport kind of has to really give strong consideration to having that transparent of a replay and a review process. Because we'll just use the College Football Example. You look at how much money is now in the sport, both in that they're bringing in from television and they're bringing players. And then you look at the fact that you're selling gambling ads, so you are promoting gambling, and that is having an impact, so you should provide transparency considering so many people who are tuning in to watch your games have money riding on these games. The one thing I'll come back to, you mentioned it to Danny, they had their rules expert on the NBC broadcast. At no point did an official who spent years working in the NFL or any other whatever to mention. Well, you know, the refs have a different clock that has hundreds or thousands on it. At no point did he mention that possibility. And then, you know, there is the story from Bruce Feldman and the athletic he talked to Mike Pereira, the their rules official who spent years in the NFL. And he said that their operation was, you use the clock on the TV, you use the clock in the stadium to avoid situations just like this. If there is a discrepancy, you are supposed to use it. So it is very possible that these refs just made a mistake. They used the wrong clock. They should have been using the one on the field on the television and they went to the one that had the hundreds when they shouldn't have been and it's caused a giant controversy if you believe it. And I know a lot of people aren't going to. I'll take the big 10s word for it. I'll say that that clock exists and somebody just screwed up. But it was still a massive mistake and a huge problem and a huge point in the game, which could have major ramifications for both of these teams the rest of this season. - I was on Mac and Cube this morning with Mac or in Cube look. And Greg said that he didn't realize this, but he asked around about it. Basically, like the TV clock, it is different. And every time you like change a shot or do something, you can get off by a couple of tenths to where it is legitimately different. And I think Tom's point is really interesting. And one I hadn't considered. Are they allowed to use the official clock? Which is sort of an absurd statement, like a certain official clock. - Sports. - Yeah, right. But I feel like, God, this is such a great sport. Assuming that they're allowed to use the official clock, I think I've moved on to where like, all right, Michigan played like crap. And that's really concerning. Western is a good Mac team. One to Mac last year played a very good game and played their game, which Michigan should be dictating terms against Western Michigan. I don't think they really got like screwed, but at the same time, like they should kind of feel like they got screwed. You know what I'm saying? Like I, I think they probably got this correct, but it doesn't feel right. - Great. On that note, we actually have had Western Michigan's administration step up and address this. And so we, I know we heard from the Mac commissioner, John Steinbrecker on Saturday night, early into Sunday morning. We had it on CBS Sports HQ. Striker, do we have the comments? I believe this is the university president of Western Michigan. - We're an education institution. And the truth is, every single one of us has encountered something like this in our lives. And some of us have been lucky to have it happen where it didn't hurt this bad, but these young men are encountering this in the most public and hard-wrenching way. And trust me, there are a lot of people in their systems that are telling them to get mad at the system, blame somebody else. Maybe they're even right that it was unfair, but this is a remarkable opportunity for us to look forward and to say to these people, these young men, and frankly influence everyone around us, that when this kind of thing happens, you take a hard look. And then if the system is set such that you can't review it, then you use this as an opportunity to learn. Because the truth is, if this team is great, and I believe we can prove we are great, then this will make us stronger. - Thoughts? - Oh, I'll probably do some left NFL cams watch that. - Or Notre Dame. - Yeah, I'm just saying. - Yeah. - Is that the way they have handled this has been some of the best PR commentary you could have ever imagined. I think it's a great opportunity. I think it's like a job interview for Lance Taylor. If you're looking at considering him, the way he's handled this. I mean, I would say this has been all class from Western Michigan. I do think this does, and I think he kind of alluded to it, like if we do accomplish our goals, this is one where I think, like I was gonna ask you guys this, what do you think is more impressive? What they did against Nalgran, let's see how the whole season unfolds. What they did against Michigan or what Boise State did against Oregon, you know? And like if they're neck and neck, if they have very similar resumes, I think you have to look at what they did, getting robbed of a win as opposed to Boise State, clearly coming up short in the moment. I think that's where you have to lean. - Oh, man, what a fun. I mean, I guess it's fun, but it would be fun for Boise and Western. - Yeah, it would be fun for it to see. If we are arguing week one quality losses on November the 20th between these teams to see who gets the 12 seed, like that, that is quite a remark of, I mean, college football, I understand that an expanded college football playoff, waters down the regular season, I agree that objectively it's just part of the tradeoff here, but that does not mean that a week one, smallest week one margins could end up impacting even in an expanded playoff, a what could end up happening at the end of the year. That's a fascinating thing to consider. I think Western Michigan will not, Boise will still have other chances against teams. - I'm at this. - Yeah, they've got more chances against teams of higher quality. For Western Michigan, they would just probably have to start bringing the hammer to Mac teams and really starting to look dominant if they want to put themselves in that position. - Boise also has to play Western Michigan. - That's right. - Whoa, perfect. - Yeah. - Oh, then it would be fun.
We're comparing them because the head head on the field will matter the most. Yeah, well, I don't know man We are talking about the college football playoff here Any other final thoughts here on oh one last piece and this is I wanted to make sure this was my very last word because it is the piece that I am Assigning the least amount of energy to but it was a hell of a throw. Okay. Yeah, we're deaf to are done Well, no, I'm because we all love golf, right? We all love golf. I mean, I played at Sawgrass the 17th hole You know the island green. You know what I did the first time I nuked it over the green So you know, I just took a mulligan and then I adjusted clubs and I kind of dialed it back a little bit And then it was bam. It was right there But you know what you don't really get that luxury like he basically got a mulligan because the first one was awful He didn't give him a chance and Kyle woulding him said that after the game was like first one didn't even give him a chance Like that is rule number one on a Hail Mary is to make sure it's in bounds, but he got to adjust got to change clubs, and he got wrecked too Yeah, that's the thing is he's getting he's getting hit He's like off balance and it's just right. I mean we credited JJ if you can't in for the athleticism on the catch two That was one piece that didn't get out. I didn't come back to until I was continuing to think about it All right, speaking of results on the field Sunday night gave us a big time game Like ranked on ranked Louisville all miss fun finish here clunky start I'll leave this one just kind of open bud to where you want to take it. What were some of the sort of headline top line takeaways that you got From the walkoff field goal for the Rebs to prevent what could have been kind of a bad collapse there at the end I mean Trinidad's amazing. Yes, right like like he just So many deep shots that that he hit and just like attacking down the field like the You don't see this whole lot like I got to to me like he really you know really stood out like hitting do Salisander on those two big ones was You know what was was pretty big? I Was disappointed in old Mrs Secondary which I thought was gonna be improved this year and like they were still turning guys loose kind of like scarely often, you know and If Louisville doesn't play like dumbasses, right which I mean like But that's kind of what they've been for like the last twenty five years when they're good. It's like all right They got guys who could play at Miami, you know or at You know Alabama athletically and maybe like the you know game instincts and like that kind of stuff just lacking in certain ways just The repeated personal fouls like hammering Chamblis when he's you know good half yards out of bounds on a third and eighth scramble where you're gonna get off the field right like The you know how many time like I was shot that yeah like the rough in the kicker or the punter like You know that if you force all missing to a field goal. That's a win Right Like it's it's a big-time mistake to hit him at all You don't really like I'm not saying don't try to block it, but like come on man You know, I was encouraged by Louisville like if they if I was convinced they could play clean games And I'm like okay cool like they got a really good shot to go 11 and 1 They'll probably lose a couple if they shouldn't because that is sort of their MO, you know, and I mean like I I'm curious to hear your y'all thoughts on on keynotes like I it's all some really good things I love them. I think it's great. I know this was one of the games that actually felt like a pretty good feel for I thought Louisville would be able to handle the physicality of an SEC team like Ole Miss Athletically like all those things they matched up pretty well the one unknown was what was Lincoln King It's going to be once he settled into the game He kind of had that little swagger about him like he did look like he was kind of starting to feel himself was getting into a groove was getting into a rhythm I think you have to feel really pleased what you saw from Louisville I know you didn't come out with the win, but as far as like a moral victory You got to feel pretty good about the talent that you have going toe-to-toe with them on the other side But I was trying to think of it because man Try not to ambush those the prettiest deep ball I don't know if there is a comp the only name that I kept up because he likes to put a lot of air under it Which I appreciate like it's just beautiful. Do you remember Jeff Blake like that kind of remind me of Jeff Blake who was a Really good deep ball thrower, but my goodness the ball comes off his hand nicely and Obviously, we need to know what he does outside the pocket, but I think that is the one thing you do not have to worry about is turn it out Chamberlain so even with the rocky start, he just does not get rattled. He's got ice in his veins He's one of the best quarterbacks in college football and you saw that on display in the second half Like the quickness with which he gets to like oh, it's there on firing. Yeah, it's fast Like it's not a big wind up. He doesn't take a big stride his feet are constantly moving. He just It's like oh shoot. He's just a sniper out there, man I like T said after the game. He's like I don't want to play games like this. I wish we didn't True dad you're such a hero in these moments tell us about what it takes He's like I don't want to play like this in the fourth quarter I would much rather we'd been able to have better execution earlier in the game and not have to deal with this But somebody who even though he was kind of making light of it It's very much willing to answer the call for those kinds of plays as he's been doing you know over the last two seasons Yeah, they're gonna go as far as he goes. I mean, that's that's my take away from it It's kind of it's not all that different from what they were last year Like yeah, it's really dad played fantastic in the second half and they kept making Plays to go ahead because they had to because like what their defense just was not very good and it they looked good against the run They looked horrific against the past and keep in mind that's a quarterback who was starting his first game in like what five years Since he's been in high school and since he's been a starter and you could tell early because Louisville was having a lot of problems with like the game clock They had to burn a bunch of time outs because they were about to take delays again They have game penalties early Jeff Brahms. So clearly Lincoln was yeah like he was like you know like he was having real difficulty Adapting to the speed of the game and he hadn't been in one for so long that you can understand it. So but yeah, like if Treadad messes up that team is in trouble like he has to be that good or else I don't know how they're gonna like weekly in the SEC I don't know how they're gonna be competing like they did it last year But that was kind of how I felt about them all last year. I kept waiting for you know Like the them to step on a rake and it actually hurt them and they never really did until they got you know to deep into the playoffs It's hard to do that we get and we go if we call them like a 20 power rating wise, right? Which is you know, they'd be like a 10-point dog like like a Texas or Ohio State If they don't have Trinidad, what are they like like is he worth well? Yeah I'm hair cutting them like a full touchdown if it's like a meaningful game on the Past defense for both sides my sense was both of these coaches just first and foremost were trying to sell out to stop the run That what Lacey and Brown provide on each side The both defenses were like we are like that is our number one thing that we have to do which I'll let I mean shoot I know Pete Golding's a big fan of the cover 3 podcast. I'll let him reach out You know clarify that for us, but it seemed as though some of that was a a balance issue Also, I mean you talked about the delay games. How about the punts going over Trinidad said how about the fumble by Lacey after you'd gotten the fourth down conversion? I mean this thing they were playing with a greasy watermelon in the first half is sloppy just all around it Once the game took off it ended up providing the second half that gave us all the fireworks But kind of an ugly game here to begin with I can have was glorious though Fun second half. I do think that I'm curious to see how much brawmed apps to what keenholes felt comfortable doing Because like just dropping back in the pocket It was rough Anytime like they were using like the threat of his legs or the bootleg to get him out so that he can like get the clean look at it He threw on the on the run well He he created space on those roles well like he he threw pretty accurately down the field You know like like he had a couple of deep shots. They also I think drew like two PIs on on deep shots like Man, I know brawmed is a really good dropback guy But he may have a quarterback who's not very good at that and as the game went on I thought he adapted well like big You know when they got down there in the red zone for their last touchdown They were I was like okay, so We're just gonna go like you know two by two Gone and just straight dropping back like okay, and the next play they ran QB Tarozik. There we go Okay, I also think we have to remember it was his first game in college You know like he can improve from the pocket. That's where he probably isn't comfortable in there And I think that's where if he develops there that's when he could be that much better if he develops as that pocket faster Because if you throw that in with the running ability then you could be something really good The the explosiveness they had Louisville has to is nice like Richardson can go McCollumay Richardson. Yeah, yeah, and the way like they have They look multiple touchdown scorer types on that offense from the outside It's like like every time I get the ball in her hands. Oh this could go, you know, and that like I Shoot hey, hey, we're gonna call him Sam's club Malacatoni. We got a Sam's club Malacatoni's out there. Man seriously Like I I was encouraged by what I saw from them all my offensive line scares me a little bit But at the same time like we know Louisville's front's good Right, I saw some chatter like oh wait. Wait till miss gets in the SEC and like Are you taking Auburn's D line over Louisville's? No, I'm not you taking miseries. I'm not like they're gonna face some good ones. Oh Oklahoma probably gives problems George is not gonna be easy, but
It's not like every SEC team they play is going to be way better up front than Lovla is defensively. Good point. My final question on this game, are there analytics that support the idea that showing quarterbacks moms is better for a broadcast? On the hand of the prime time you see games. I don't know if they're probably ABC games. Love showing players, moms. We could probably get the challenge. We're excellent last night. Yeah, that was some good shout outs. Yeah, there was. Yeah, there was one. I was a big fan of, yeah. Wait, if you get a Nashville game and Ole Miss is playing it, like you're going about a thousand combinations. Pretty, yeah. You don't have to look far for the camera, man. I've been in some games. You got to look really. You got to start digging, really looking around. You probably don't have to scan the crowd very much in that one. No, that's not no problem with the where's where's Waldo on that. All right. Coming up on the other side, top five team showing out in an NFL stadium. What did we learn from the Notre Dame fighting hours? Did they improve to 1 and 0 and more? Next episode is brought to you by PNC Bank. If you've ever watched a football game with someone who doesn't normally, you might have been asked. Like, what's the point of running the ball up the middle? In short, to the uninformed eye, these plays are boring, but they result in a lot of short, reliable gains while managing the clock. It's just like why PNC uses a boring, methodical approach because reliable gains while keeping an eye on the time are just as important for your money as they are in football. What it was their mantra, I guess we're calling it, "Leave no doubt 41-13 is the final score against the Badgers." But similar to the game we were just talking about, first half and second half a little bit of a disconnect right there, things not firing on all cylinders for the fighting Irish either early in the first half. But a pick six and three touchdowns on three second half possessions lead to a 28-3 second half for Notre Dame to be able to pull away here. Tom, do we, like on the, do you want to start on the Notre Dame side or the Wisconsin side? Because obviously both of those are significant to us. Was there anything to be taken the way that we talked about Louisville with, "Hey, like we came out there and we showed some fight early," or is there just still a little bit of sadness for the way this looks at the end? I mean, from the Wisconsin angle, I would argue that the first half was very encouraging. They were going toe-to-toe with Notre Dame, and you looked at the one thing I was most interested in was, would they be able to put pressure on CJ Carr against that offensive line because regardless of how the game ended, if they were able to do that against Notre Dame's offensive line, it felt well for the rest of the season, and they did a relatively decent job of that. I do think that there's reasons to be optimistic, but I also think that you saw what Wisconsin season is going to be. They brought in Colton Joseph, and since the day they brought him in, I mentioned that as far as good as he was for Old Dominion last year, he turned the ball over a lot, and that was against Sun Belt competition. And once you're stepping up a competition, will he be able to get rid of those turnovers? And what ended the game was a pick six. Now, based on what I saw, I think there's a decent argument to be made that the White receiver messed up, but there was a miscommunication there, and that pick six took away any chance Wisconsin hadn't completely flipped the game on its head. I think that's what Wisconsin is going to have to just walk that tightrope all year, because there were other plays outside that interception where Colton Joseph looked really good, and they had a lot of kind of explosives, at least opportunities for explosives that they didn't even hit as well, that you just haven't seen from that offense in the last couple of years. So you ended up getting your head caved in in the end, but overall, you get past the score. I think Wisconsin has some things to be happy about, and they don't have to face another Notre Dame. Yeah, I agree. I thought Wisconsin, I don't think Wisconsin is good, but they don't suck anymore. No, I'm like, I'm like, no, I'm sorry, so like, they've been bad. And now they're like, okay, they're like an average power four college ball team with a cakewalk schedule. And now I'm like much more confident that just based on what they showed, they can cache in that cakewalk schedule and make a bolt. I don't know if they're going to win eight or nine, but like I'm pretty confident they can get to six or seven, you know, and like, they were fairly physical against a good Notre Dame team. And I thought, like, I don't think I love the fit of Joseph with this OC. Like, I don't know, it gets kind of a mismatch. And I thought that all off season, but it's not like a disaster, you know, like they're, they're fine. I think like Wisconsin fans should be like, cool. Like, we got a product that is not embarrassing to watch every week. Should we be proud of this product, probably not, but like, it's a step in the right direction, I guess. Like, they weren't destroyed by Notre Dame. And I think that was like an outcome that was possible entering the game. Like, I know Notre Dame covered and whatnot, but they, they fought them well for a half. You know, like, they play physical, they play hard. They're, they're not real skilled. I don't think the opposite scheme is anything special, like it's kind of a weird fit. But, you know, like, they play a lot of teams that can't do another Dame did. They, they went through the gauntlet of a schedule the last two years. And now they get rewarded with the easy one. And I think they'll be able to catch that in. I mean, Notre Dame USC and Iowa are the three toughest opponents here. And you've just gotten one of them behind you. You're going to be able to draw the likes of Rutgers and Purdue and Michigan State. Yeah. I mean, like, there's, they're going to be spots there in next two games, by the way, are going to be Western Illinois and Eastern Michigan. So you should have the chance to be able to fill it up to the point where to Buds Point, you, you are entering the Minnesota rivalry game with the chance to be able to make sure you're a bolting. If you haven't done it already. Like, you're probably a dog at UCLA. You'll be favorite of Michigan State. You'll be a dog at Penn State. You'll be a dog hosting SC. You'll be a dog at Iowa. But if you can get through that decently, like, you finish Rutgers at home at Maryland, at Purdue, host Minnesota, you could go two and two in that stretch, right? Yeah, I can see that. Maybe you steal one in your middle five stretch. Is there any potential that, is there any reason to think that Notre Dame's that Wisconsin being competitive in the first half was a Notre Dame issue? Yeah, I mean, I think Wisconsin, that's kind of the gave their best effort that came out. I mean, they did give them 14 points with a pick six and the kickoff returns. So like, those don't. Oh, that was, that was another great review process there, by the way. I'm just so glad we have instant replay. I mean, I said that the other night, like, wait, it's just great that we can take longer to still get the calls wrong. That doesn't make any sense. I will say this. This is an observation watching the entire weekend of what we think are going to be national champion contenders. And this would be something that concerns me. If you're Notre Dame, it's in the commonality, like, when you see Miami, you see Malachi, Tony, when you see Texas, you see Cam Coleman, we see Ohio State, you see Jeremiah Smith. I know what the trade has green for LSU, you see these playmakers like this field. I know it's the year of the quarterback. I also think it's the year of the playmaker, the offense of weapon. Most of these guys at wide receiver. Where is that guy going to be for Notre Dame? Like, we have not seen that yet. It's been issue for them. They went out and get the two guys from Ohio State. No one was hurt, but like, it's the same guys that we saw last year with Jordan phase on being the guy like, where is the playmaker for Notre Dame on offense? I can't face him. I don't understand. Yeah. So exists. Like, if this Notre Dame reaches like a quarter or a semi-final, and you're prepping for them as a team that I was also in the quarter or semi-final, anybody really scare you? No. Like, if you can just like acknowledge they're good, they have a lot of good players, but like, do they?
have a guy's okay, we need to spam him and throw throw the ball to him 10 times. No, you're only afraid of Dr. Carr, the surgeon, you're only, I mean, that's, that's the, the Notre Dame offense is like scalpel, you know, he, he, he just gets out there and it only works if they run the ball well early. And that's what I thought Wisconsin was doing good as they were putting them in a lot of those third and long scenarios where they were able to not give them those clean looks because Jordan phase on to enough of an athlete to be able to go and find some open space. And CJ Carr is a good enough of a quarterback to be able to thread the needle, give it to him in a spot where you can even extend the play. But I, Danny, I don't think you're wrong, you know, in terms of just putting a, we're putting a lot on the quarterback to elevate the level of his wide receivers if we're comparing them to the very shoot. Decorian more, you know, the, just the level of one, evidence to it would be their number one. Yeah, like I, the three questions I have in Notre Dame entering the year, like very clearly good, very clearly a top 10 type team, right? Do they have a number one at receiver who actually scares you in a playoff, right? Because most of these other teams do. Do they have a real game record on the D line? Right? Like, as opposed to just a bunch of guys who are good. And his offensive line really is good as it's hyped up to be. Like I, I, they didn't face a lot of big time D lines down the stretch last year. I know they played well, but there's a difference when you step up in competition. So I, I don't think they answered those questions last night, but they also like those answers are against are still open as it's one game. And they still want and covered. Tom, would you make it the iris? I mean, did they lose by 28 to a big 10 team? I know, right. Yeah, it's like they won by 28, guys. Like I, yeah, they could, they could have been played judging them by their standard as a but the national championship stand right to win the title. Yeah. So they won against a big 10 team by 28. They beat the conference. They keep putting the national title by 28 points. Pretty much in their backyard. We do this to Georgia. We do this to Oregon. Like we do this to the top five teams. I know, but it's just the way you guys like, I feel like the way we're discussing this game, we're talking about Wisconsin in a more positive light than we are Notre Dame and Notre Dame won the damn game. Yeah, after that game, are you raising Wisconsin's power rating and you're docking Notre Dame's power rating a little bit, right? No, if I'm raising Wisconsin, but if I'm raising Wisconsin's power rating and Notre Dame beat them by 28, why would I knock Notre Dame for winning and covering against the team that was better than I thought it was to begin with? Because they had tremendous turnover luck. Pick six and and and fumble kickoff. If you play that game again, there's no way you're you could tell me your lay end of points with the iris. They won by 28. Yes, it was fluky as hell. By margin, like they deserve to win the game. Winning by 28 was very fluky. I'm not crushing Notre Dame. I just think we're talking about it from are they are they good enough to win the national championship? They still could be with one game. Did they land up today? Notre Dame or Oklahoma? Notre Dame. Notre Dame Notre Dame or LSU? LSU, LSU. Notre Dame or Indiana? Indiana. Yeah, Notre Dame or Oregon? We were just talking on Saturday night about how kind of iffy no Indiana's defense looked, but now they're juggernaut. Well, I mean, obviously, that was the juggernaut that is North Texas. I just this is listen, they won by 28 points. I'm not arguing against your points. I'm not saying that there aren't concerns about the lack of a dominant skill position player. They won by 28 points, guys. It's like, I don't know. I mean, Jordan Faeson did have four you catches for 80 yards. That's 20 yards per catch. That seems pretty dangerous. That seems explosive to me. You guys are like he had five catches for 25. It's also the island. I don't know. I watch. He didn't have two 34 like Malachi. I'm sorry. But he wasn't playing Stanford either. He wasn't playing a Stanford. He was down like 15 players in their starting lineup. Well, and his and his average depth of target was 11, which goes back to my CJ car. Like, he just needs to send the lacrosse player out to him to find the open field. I'll throw it to you on the run and then he goes to make the play and boom, that's a goal. Like, I think that the CJ car of this all is the story in a good way. Marcus Freeman, after the game said, I was pressing. We were pressing. We weren't like all the way down and totally natural green Bay Packers stadium. The good opponent, a well coached opponent, done tip, but he coaches well. And he is going to be able to get out there and like bring the fight to you. And then what we started to see as the game went on was I think that everybody just let it loose and started to play within the frame of it. And 28 to three is probably a more representative, more representative gap between those two teams in terms of Notre Dame playing to its potential on offense and defense than the 13 to 10. And the run game struggled in the first half. And we see that all the time, first games of the season. Second half, that run game looked pretty damn good to me. That offensive line looked pretty damn good to me. I thought they looked fine in the second half. There were some if he moments in the first, but Nise Williams looked pretty good to me. I don't know guys. He might not be during my love. He might not be a top 10 NFL draft thing, but he might be good enough. It's just a standard by wish review. You know, like I, I think they look absolutely like every bit like a top 10 team. I don't think that they showed me much. It's like a national title team. And we could also be massively over acting the LSU. The teams that like, or Miami, like they might have looked awesome, but it was against, we know, maybe Wisconsin is way better than we thought too. Clemson, yeah, do Clemson's miss. And the reason why that comes to mind is something that Tom just mentioned. And that is the importance of Nise Williams to be able to deliver the consistency on early downs, being able to get that run game going and what it does to open things up for everything for CJ Carr. Williams finishes with 20 carries, 90 yards and two touchdowns, Nolan James. Tom gets in the mix as well. And what were some of the pieces of that, you know, just the simple, the simple bread and butter of football, what'd you get from Notre Dame in the second half from that run game that helped them be able to pull away? I mean, I think that they, I mean, honestly, it was just as simple as executing your blocks. I feel like in the first half, you know, this was a team that had moved their left tackle from last year's left guard. They had a new starting left tackle. And you see a lot of times early in the season when you've got new combinations on your offensive lines, some miscommunications, some mistakes. I feel that they went into the locker room at halftime, got that stuff dialed in, came out and looked much better in the second half, opening much cleaner holes and lanes for Williams, James, Kendrick Young, all of those guys. And I think they were just able to kind of, you know, hammer the rock home. They weren't really doing anything overly complicated. They were sticking to pretty basic principles. And it was very effective for those simple principles, effective execution. Those are the practical plays that can lead to the kind of success Notre Dame is looking for in their pursuit of a national championship. Not going back to what we were talking about. I will agree Notre Dame did not look as good against Wisconsin as Oklahoma did against Utah. I'm going to have to, you're going to have to, you're going to have to let that one go. I'm going to have to, he just spoiled one of his upon for the reviews. Coming up on the other side, a look back at the weekend that was a look at Monday nights matchup and more nukes. Back here on the cover three podcast every single Monday during the football season, we take a little bit of time because we go live on Saturday night by 11, 30 PM Eastern time. There's still football going on and there's other football that needed that extra deep dive, that second look, that extra review. So we call it upon further review. It were terrible calls. Do you want to go ahead and jump in? After further review. All right, Tom, you've been running the conference scoreboard. What's it, what's it revealing right now? I do believe that the ACC's bid at an at large died already. Already? Already. Weeks not done. Wow. Well, the only game left is an ACC versus an ACC game chip. It's hard to really help yourself, but like the SEC. You could hurt yourself though. The SEC three and O against power four teams in Notre Dame. Big 12 was two and two. Big 10 was one and one. The ACC God bless them for playing the games, but you got to win some of them and they went one and five. Their only win was your beloved Tarheals beating TCU one and five in Ireland. Georgia Tech lost a Colorado. Clemson got destroyed by LSU. Lost in college, lost a Cincinnati, not that was ever really going to be a thing. Cal lost to UCLA and then Louisville's lost Ole Miss last night. I think the Louisville one really hurts because the rest of their schedule is super easy, but that means they also don't really have a chance to add to their resume. Like the toughest game you can argue on their schedule is SMU, which will kind of serve as a kind of knockout game for them. If we're assuming Miami wins the ACC at this point. So when it comes to the end of the year, when you're looking at like the 10 and two teams that didn't win their leagues and the ACC is not going to be compared to Big 12 and Big 10 teams and I think honestly they're being compared to Big 12 teams more than they would the Big 10. They've lost a Colorado. They've lost a Cincinnati. Like Georgia Tech, you know, that's just it's yeah that there's not a lot going to that's going to go their way as far as tiebreakers. It's a rough start for them. It's like it feels like Miami or bust or you need like Louisville to completely win out from here and then lose to my enemy close in the ACC championship where you need SMU to win go into the ACC championship. Yeah, exactly. So it's it's a very very narrow path. I don't think anything's changed. We've got three teams where possibly they're Miami Louisville and SMU. I think it's exactly the same that it was going into season. I mean Louisville's chances are done. Like if if you were setting a line on playoff bids, ACC plus the eye.
Irish, like you're juicing the under at like minus 300. I need to, those are three related Notre Dame plays a lot of AC teams. They do play Miami. They do play SMU. Like I don't see the ACC getting to win in almost any circumstance if the Irish also make it. What about the bid thief scenario? That's their best case scenario. Yeah. Yeah, one of the absolute one of those teams. I don't, I don't, we don't need to on September 7th. We don't need to be proposing bid thief. You know, we can just analyze it at and can you get in on your own merits? And the opportunities were there in multiple places across the country for the ACC to pick up wins that greatly changed their chances to win an at large conversation on their own merits without it having to be in all caps. You yell at him, Connor. You come here and tell him what is going on. How do we dare you? Virginia already had one of those dominant teams. They got 18 offensive lineman that are 37 years old. I mean, come on. Confucius, we haven't forgotten Virginia. It's just who did Virginia beat in ACC team. Yeah. Like this is talking about it at larges. It's going to come down to how you compete against other leagues. They didn't help them in that respect. Do you think you think a standing applies to the big 12? Because they, yeah, I think it's I mean, I think that's I think I think I don't think anything has changed. Because ACC was garbage. I think you lose is to North Carolina. T.C. lost North Carolina. Baylor. We don't need to call Router. Did be Georgia Tech, but those are both bottom half teams in both leagues. I think, right? That's that's the thing about the big 12. We really don't know. And that's the thing about the ACC. We really don't know who the bottom half teams are. Like you see a big one this weekend. Yeah. I want to we're not even clue to Mason Heichel, the disrespect of pit in this conversation. And by the way, pit and Virginia, both have big 12 matchups here coming up, right? West Virginia doesn't know Virginia play West Virginia and pit plays Maryland or doesn't pit play a pit as a game coming up in non-conference. I think it's pretty good. UCF, that's where we're just they play UCF this weekend. Yeah, yeah, let's go. Big rebound. Let's go. Speaking of some of the conference scoreboard, Tom, the SEC teams went 16 and O and have an average margin of victory of 37.6 points per game over their opponent. The last time that every SEC school won its season opener was 1997, 1997, 1997, 14 of the six. Oh, it's right there on the screen. I don't need to read my notes anymore. 14 of the 16 SEC teams, one by 17 plus points. It there were there also tricks about AP ranked teams that blew out most of their opponents. So let's cut through it. Tom, this is okay. Please mention who they were. The this is what I'm about to do. Yeah, is this is this is this reflective of the conference of the matchups, the conference of the matchups. More of the matchups like on one hand, they did go three no against power four teams. And that includes LSU, completely dog walking, Clemson. But Auburns went over Baylor came down to a two point conversion. Did you miss? Yeah, Ole Miss beat Louisville on the last second field goal. Those are the three results that kind of, you know, tell the tale about how it goes. Because Mizzou beat Arkansas, Pine Bluff by 40, Oklahoma beat U-Tep by 51. Georgia beat Tennessee State by 60. Texas beat Texas State by 52. Texas A&M beat Missouri State by 50. Alabama beat East Carolina by 38. Now, these are all the kind of results you expect to see. But still, they did go undefeated and that includes in all three of their games against P-14. So there's two sides to it. The numbers themselves are a little pointless. The fact that they're undefeated is what matters. You know, I'm kind of glad that a lot of those games were cupcake weekend, the weekend in November. I'm glad we kind of got them out of the way now and November comes. They'll be playing against each other. I mean, that used to be when you'd schedule the FCS or the lower tier group of six, get them out of the way now. So that's a great point. We just watched the SEC's cupcake week. Yeah. And the good news is, which does make sense. The pretty news is if you're the SEC because we talked about this a little bit on Saturday. The bottom of the big 10 struggled against teams that was supposed to overpower. Yeah. The SEC didn't really have that like Arkansas did not look good against North Alabama. Vandy kind of messed around a little bit with Austin P. But outside of that, even the team like Mississippi State can shield you Elman row, which is typically what you want to see from that. Whereas the big 10 comparatively, they had a lot of close calls. Yeah. Well, we didn't get a chance to talk about it earlier when we were talking about the nightcap. What Washington. Yeah. Yeah. That was a. A lot of execution errors. Jetfish looks so pissed. So pissed. I do think I thought it was. Oh, yeah. It must be legal. But I do think one of the things within that game that I had no problem watching it live. Before half, they're up 10-3. They go forward on fourth and one from the goal line. He says, let's do it. And they were getting the ball out. So they could have gone up 17 to three, I think, at the time. Then they could have then they get the ball. They could have like really controlled the game. Instead, they get shut down. Washington State goes into the locker rooms. As we got this, they get the stop. They hang around. It was like that was such a sequence. It was the worst case scenario for Jetfish. Like he bet. And he chucked the headset after that. When he thought they were going to be able to just mull them in. And the one thing I go back and maybe this goes back kind of. We're talking about Notre Dame and how we're nitpicking on these teams. I keep being reminded. It's hard to win college football games. Like it doesn't matter who you're playing against. If it's group of six, if it's it, it's just it's not easy. Especially you get a team who's kind of playing their hearts out and they're playing really good. So yeah, do I feel underwhelmed from Washington? Yes, but you did get a win in a rivalry game. You were able to pull away late, but definitely sort of resetting some of those expectations for the Huskies. Yeah, I mean, good time. They were plus three in turnovers. The only one by 14. They had 12 penalties for 130 yards. They kept extending La-Zoo drives. Now the good news for Washington. The best thing that happened to Washington in this game was that La-Zoo is really bad. Like that is not a very good football team. I agree. Like I think Demond is pretty reliably awful against good teams through the air. But I usually count on him to spam the bad. Oh. No, no. Uh oh, lost him. It hasn't earned the the reaction show too. What's going on? But I just went full Demond against Ohio State. [LAUGHTER] Just shelled up. Just completely collapsed. What's the got done? [LAUGHTER] I don't know what's going on with the internet, man. Shoot. There's back. You're good. I'm going to get Starlink. You normally count on Demond to be able to, like, overwhelm a lesser opponent. Yeah. Yeah, right. Like, I think they missed in Zell Boston. Mm-hmm. Yeah, you're super cool. Do you want to call them too? Yeah, I mean, they had negative EPA per dropback against Washington State. And they have negative EPA on the game until, like, the fourth quarter? Yeah. Yeah, they hit some ice runs, for sure. But, like, and part of that was Demond running the ball. You know, I just-- that passing game is not good right now. Like, that is-- that's a pretty major red flag for me with them. Yeah, I texted you guys during the game. I'm kind of out on Demond at this point. He's tiny. He's a good runner. He's not a special thrower. God, but we had such a good time with him, you know? It was so much, you know, like, our improvement. Has anybody seen him or Tommy Costellanus in the same room? I mean, because they both were number one-- I mean, they're kind of our similar. They're both electric, like, runners, but they have a lot of improvement to do run the football. They remind me to-- Tommy's were jacked. Yeah, I was going to say, I'd kind of rather have Tommy. He could survive it. If you had your ultimate druthers with Demond, when did you prefer to just run him 20-- like, given his running ability, you'd prefer to spam the run with it, right? But you can't, because he's so tiny. We've also never seen Castellanus successfully operate, like, at all, a real offense. Like, I think Demond has, like, a big edge processing. Like, Castellanus is only good and stuff that is very Mickey Mouse, like a mouse on thing. It's fine, I'll just run a Mickey Mouse off. Right. So, with all of week one, not all of week one, obviously, we're about to talk about SMU Florida State, too, but LSU had Sam Levitt sit in court side, and they were texting Demond. Boy, you might have missed it. Come on, touch a bullet on that one. Sam Levitt handled, acquitted himself much better in his season opener than I think Demond Williams is, and that's an objective fact so far. All right, let's see what else for a pun further review from the notebook is out there. Anything? I can take us to a little bit below the fold, but I don't want to rush you into citadel and triple over time over Charlotte. But that's a good call from the chat. We didn't take these clumps and cook bottles down. This is not good.
So it's not fitting. You're not meeting the standard of, uh, not meeting the standard of Buds Coke bottle background. I want to go, uh, we're, we're moving the balls up. All right. Yeah. Yeah. Face on Brandon. I know it was Furman. Oh boy. Well, you want to see. That's right. He's good right now. Something or nothing. That's what I was going to say. So Face on Brandon's five total touchdowns is the most total touchdowns in a season opener by an FBS freshman since 2000. So something or nothing, something, something, something, something, yeah. Good decision. Josh, I put, yes, something or nothing. JKS and turnovers, um, God, that offense sucks. I man. No, like, like, not, not the players, not, uh, like, I don't like the way they call that and design that thing. Like, I, I, I want what they ran last year back that, that's rough. The game was tied and tight until it wasn't in all the second half adjustments broke UCLA's way. I kind of think, uh, kind of think Bob Chesney got the better of our boy, Tosh right there. Boy. Yeah. That's, uh, Hey, listen, good news, Bruins. Coaching upgrade, right? Big time. Yeah, that, that was not a fair fight of coaching at all. Um, yeah, tough, tough scenes for, uh, something or nothing, JKS and turnovers because you were talking about not just interceptions, but fumbles as well. Mm hmm. Something. I mean, that offense is so bad on early downs like there's nothing creative. They don't, they don't, they don't scheme anything up. It's, it's garbage. And then it's like, JKS save us on third and long, which he did multiple times, but that's also going to yield turnovers. So I expect that to continue unless the offense, all of a sudden magically, hmm, what about the use? Michigan did win a national title, too. Third and JJ, uh, what about the UCLA side? Good, I mean, good Nico game. Not great. Not a great Nico game, not a great Nico game, but like solid, the pick, the, the pick is definitely not on him. Mm hmm. Like the one going into half that the receiver runs the wrong route, like clearly. Um, they also didn't have their deep threat, myself. Mm hmm. Right. Like, I think that offense changes like the ability to take the, like, take it over the top. If he's playing. I was pretty impressed. The defensively, they looked fairly good, um, ran the ball well. Yeah. Yeah. And they're good and way night are pretty good. Yeah. Nico, like playing really hard and inspired and willing to like run the ball is, is nice. Kind of, I, that's when I was thinking good, not great. I was imagining when he's just like taken off and will in his team by like, all right, we just need to get to the sticks, right? Um, and I am maybe the most athletic person on this field right now. It's, it's time for me to go make this thing happen. I thought that was an encouraging sign from your QB one, who's in is what third offense in three years? Mm hmm. You know, you'll get two years in this unless it, unless he turns pro because he's one of those guys that gets. Three years. Yeah. Yep. Uh, great, great call. So, uh, little, little New Mexico corner here, absolute clinic by the Lobos. You know, everybody's concerned about what it's going to be like without Jack Lane in there. Um, you know, we got Luke Moga, we got Toa Fahve, and it would be two series for Toa, two series for Luke, two series for Toa, two series for Luke at halftime Central Michigan looking up your down 20 to nothing in both quarterbacks have led multiple scoring drives against you. Uh, Jason X going to be getting in that ass all, all season long. This is not going to be a fun team to play to who they may concern. That's how you handle a direct directional Michigan school right there. Just right. It's true. Locked them up. Uh, good bounce back from UNLV. They had some kind of funky conditions and one 21 to six against Hawaii on the island. Jackson Arnold does not do anything for me to inspire a downfield passing attack, but he's a great RB two. That's just a straight from the no pad on this one Arnold 99 yards on 15 recorded carries for two touchdown. Jayden Thomas, who we talked a lot the preseason, 147 yards in a score on 20 carries. Yeah. Yeah, it was it was on that point. Yeah. I think of what Davis Warren did against Hawaii a week ago and who Davis Warren was at Michigan and we kind of die document. You know what Davis looked pretty decent against Miami to then compare that to what Jackson Arnold did against that same Hawaii secondary at its yeah, um, 68% run rate at 6.44 yards per run. Dan Mullin on some big, what was going to keep running until they stop it. You know, kind of energy. So 15 design carries for Jackson Arnold RB two, baby. Jayden Thomas is great RB one Jackson Arnold is a great RB two, no recorded pass, no throws for orgy that we did get in the game recorded a couple carries as well. Anything else from from the notepad before we do a quick little look ahead to tonight. Only because you brought it up, uh, the shock did how much man free stand for plating as Miami. So we're just like, you know, we're going to continue to work on the defense that we want to play. Is it going to work against Miami? Not a chance. Uh, but we, we, we, guys, we need to keep getting these game reps so that like this might work in some of these other AC games and, uh, they were not like playing to keep it close against Miami. They were going to run their stuff. They were playing to the tape. They were playing. They were playing to make sure that we've got these good, uh, these good live, well, you know, it's stand for. They're very concerned about player safety. So we really minimize our good tape reps for the games themselves, got to protect those brains. Yeah. Absolutely. These are our leaders of tomorrow. Come on. Um, yeah, anything else for, I mentioned that the, the citadel Charlotte conclusion was crazy. Like sit, I was like, not a great look for a Charlotte at all. It was very much sitting in that 137, 138 debate. Citadel was jacked, man. I mean, that was a, it's a fun, hard, you get to triple over time against an FPS team. You get the win. I was, uh, I was, I was, I was moved by that another late night game. Did you guys catch, uh, Nevada's box score here against Western, oh, they killed them. Dude, a cool, uh, three, 23 on the ground. Um, um, um, that is, that's more than change in elevation. That's, yeah, that's, that's, uh, toppers, toppers might have trouble being stoppers here in, uh, here in 2026. Toppers. Toppers. I was saying stoppers, uh, is it with the group? If that's what you're going to be doing on the trip to, to Reno, um, okay, Bob check for tonight. Danny, you're in Tallahassee. First word to you. Well, do you make in the drive over? Are you going? Okay. Okay. I was going to waste gas money. I just want to waste it. Can me, it's going to be hot. Is it? It's hot, right? It is so hot. Oh my gosh. It's brutal. It's, it's, nervous energy around town, talking to fans, I think we have a chance. Are we going to get smoked? I think it is imperative, absolutely imperative. And I do think Mike Norbell is a pretty good game planer coming out, you know, scheming up some things, some shot plays that he can get guys open. I think it is imperative that they start out, moving the ball, getting some, some positive mojo. If they don't, that's what I worry about a little bit for the nose because if that, the crowd's going to be mumbling, you know, if they have a couple three and outs, you start hearing booze, but I mean, they just, they clearly have to play a lot better. We'll see if those backs can carry them again. The defense can't get toasted the way it is in the Mexico state. Any other thing we don't know is Kevin Jennings. Where's his hand? How is his, how's his hand? Is that impact potentially his ability to throw the football? I agree. I think you got to run. It goes a lot more in this game to even out the numbers and the run game kind of gets a nice stuff in your favor. You know, I saw Darryl DeCier is downgraded to doubtful. That's not great. Which is not great because their backups are, I'm pretty doubtful, their backups are any good at football. So that's probably not good. But yeah, like, if Jennings's hand is healthy, I think they'll, I think they'll win by double digits. I don't think this team is very good. If you took the jerseys off these guys, I don't see it. It's just, it's so much easier to say we're going to run it back. We're going to make improvements allegedly to the front office and stuff. It's easier to say it than actually to live it for, for 12 games and now they're having to live it. Done with this doomerism. Noel's Moneyline. Oh, come on over to our side, baby. No, it was not a clean operation last week. The explosives were there in like New Mexico state hit a couple prayers when they were under pressure. The quarterback just heaved a ball down the field and luckily found a guy for a touchdown. It was a breakdown. It was fine. It was the first game of the week. It was, you know, communication errors. You expect that in the first game of the season, got the game under their belt. They're at home. We're against an SMU team that hasn't been able to iron out those wrinkles yet. Noel's got something for him. They're going to win tonight. You'll see when they do remember who told you who who what you think 34 24 knows by 10? No, no, no, no, I'm going to say 20.
twenty seven twenty three Florida state. Oh, let's go. It'll be a good atmosphere. Dany's there. We just have the jets flying over Prax and the fly over there. Fifteen. It's go. Yeah. Brady Bucket's is there. Yep. That's the secret. I know. That's the secret weapon. She's ready to go. We are going to be able to give a little bit of a reaction and a word at eleven a.m. Eastern time on Tuesday back to that regular eleven a.m. starting point. Thanks to everybody who came to join us live. We appreciate you adjusting your schedule here on this Labor Day holiday. We had to accommodate some of our holiday schedules, travel and things of that nature. And you as well, we want to get you on and rocking and rolling with your holiday. We are going to be back at eleven a.m. on Tuesday. We'll have a little bit on SMU Florida state, but really it is still our Tuesday order of business and the Tuesday order of business is going to be making sure that we get you set with big game breakdown. The very biggest games of the week, we're going to start to take you inside that matchup. And as you know, and as a lot of people are talking about in the tailgate before we got started, it's a monster week. We'll have Ohio State Texas big game breakdown. We'll have Oklahoma Michigan big game breakdown conference play getting started in the SEC and elsewhere and a CBS double header for us to tell you all about Mississippi State at Minnesota Texas Tech at Oregon State, lots of fun to be able to break down. Mason Blue 72 is not looking confident in the Wolverines. In addition, by the way, Michigan's press conference this week, fun, fun little nugget for me to scramble back and listen to Kyle Wittingham, but do we see Tommy Carr against Oklahoma? I don't know.
