UNSELFISH CONTENT™ : the framework to get people to care about you and your lifestyle
13m 54s
The podcast episode focuses on transforming superficial lifestyle content (like vlogs and "get ready with me" videos) into meaningful material that builds a brand and community. The host criticizes "selfish" content that simply shows an itinerary without narrative, arguing it lacks connection and value. Instead, creators should produce "unselfish" content by framing their personal experiences through one of three lenses: to entertain, educate, or inspire the audience. This involves selecting a dominant goal for each piece of content, which then guides the hook, voiceover, editing, and message to ensure it resonates. The host illustrates this with examples, such as reframing a trip vlog to inspire viewers by debunking limiting beliefs about follower counts. The key takeaway is that creators should leverage their existing lifestyle intentionally by adding depth and focusing on what the audience gains, thereby making content that truly connects and supports long-term brand building.
Remember, it's already your name, your face, your handle, the clips are showing all the things that you're doing. The content is about you. But to make it connect, we need to balance it. So the at least one part of the piece of content is about us, is about your audience. I'm Alyssa and welcome to the Inspired Media Podcast, a space for creators, creatives, and entrepreneurs who know they're meant to do more than just stop the scroll. So we're putting the spotlight on the unspoken truths and unconventional takes on how to truly build a standout brand online. Now let the show begin. Oh hey, Vesti. Welcome back to another episode of the Inspired Media Podcast. If you're new here, I'm happy to have you. If you're an OG, you already know we are all about personal branding, storytelling, making content that actually connects. And today's episode is a must. It's going to be a good refresher if you are an OG because I fear we have lost the plot when it comes to lifestyle content. The vlogs, stand the lives, get ready with me, come with me. Creating them in a way that actually makes people feel something, not just showing your itinerary with visuals and some music. And since we're right in the middle of the year at the time of recording, it's summer 2025. I am calling this our it girl summer re brand assignment number one, creating lifestyle content that actually connects, not just looks cute and aesthetic. I mean, we love the cute sea vibes. We love the aesthetics, but it can't just all be about that when we're thinking about building a brand long term. We're going to talk about leveraging your lifestyle and your personality to grow a community because yes, you can still show your life and build a brand, but we've got to do it intentionally. Now before we get into the framework, let's talk about what I like to call selfish content. Now a selfish vlog might sound something like, hey guy with the influencer accent included. Hey guys, come with me to spend the morning at Pilates. I woke up today with some lemon water and then I went to a new party class and here's my outfit. Pilates was great. My instructor was so sweet. Obviously, I've been a little dramatic here, but like, come on, it's giving nothing. It's giving nothing. You are showing me what you are doing, telling me what I already see. No story, no connection, no hook, no heart. And I get it. Sometimes you just want to document your life and the skill and habit of documenting your life is not a bad thing. It is a good thing. If you just want to post something, a cute lifestyle piece of content, carousel of log, compilation, whatever, and it's just for you or your goal, it was to focus on editing. Your goal was just to be consistent and this is the best that you can do. There's nothing wrong with that, but I'm specifically talking to you if you have been doing those things, but you know that there's still something missing. You want a little bit more. You want to see better results. You want to see depth in your community. You want to make sure you're reaching the right people. If that's what you want, here is a different way that you can frame your lifestyle content. So what does unselfish content look like? It's actually really, really simple. And it answers the question, what's in it for them? But to make it connect, we need to balance it so that at least one part of the piece of content is about us, is about your audience. This doesn't mean that the whole thing is just about you living a life or creating a piece of content, begging us to like you and accept you and validate you. I don't want you to get into the minds of the book. I hope they like it. I hope they like it. I hope they like it. No, it's a balance. It means that you have to bake in connection, relatability and value within your content to have that nice balance. So now that we know the difference between selfish and unselfish content, let's talk about how we can actually start doing this for your page because that's why you're here. So there are three different lenses I want to walk you through that you can take any lifestyle content idea you have and make it instantly unselfish through these different lenses. And those lenses are entertaining, educational and inspirational. Or you can also say content goals to entertain, to educate, to inspire. And if you've been around since like 2021, a lot of people were saying these are your content fillers. And you can say, "I'm just going to be a little bit more of a deeper dive." I am dropping in it's officially live now. I am dropping an unselfish content guide for you. It's going to be a digital product. I'll link it down in the show notes. And this is for you if you want something a little bit more than you can do. And I'm going to be a little bit more of a deeper dive. I am dropping in it's officially live now. And this is for you if you want something a little bit deeper. And if you want something more convenient packaged in one place. I have so many free resources for you. I have a TikTok playlist. I have a ton of reels and examples on Instagram. I have this podcast episode. I have another podcast episode. So if you're like, you want to go for all those resources, please, I made them for you. But if you want to get a little bit more intentional and you want it to be more convenient, more tangible, you like the idea of not only audio, something like this. But also visual examples because in a podcast, obviously this is not always a visual podcast. This is an audio episode. So if you want it all in one with not only the trainings, the framework, the modules, the videos, the commentary, the FAQs, all of that. It's all going to be in one. I'll link it down below. But again, only if it feels right for you. Okay. Rant over. Let's take the idea. So take any idea that you want. This could be your morning routine, a day in the life as a corporate girly, a trip to the grocery store and run it through one of these lenses. And yes, you can absolutely mix and match. I do it all the time. Usually in my vlogs, I mix education and inspiration. A ton. I don't do a lot of like entertaining storytelling type of vlogs. My clients will do this. But that's just what you will see in a pattern. You'll notice if you go through my vlogs on my Instagram, but usually there will be one dominant angle. You'll pick one dominant angle and that dominant goal will guide everything else, your hook, your voice over, editing your sounds, your call to action. So for example, if your vlog's main purpose, main goal is to inspire, then your hook should be inspirational. Your voiceover should be inspirational. Your main message, inspirational. The reason why a lot of lifestyle content flops is because they miss the point. There's no point. It just feels like random footage with no narrative thread. Your goal, whether to educate, entertain, or inspire, is what ties it all together and what makes it connect. So now let me show you how this works so that you can bring it to life. I recently posted a vlog about my trip to New York with Adobe and I framed it through an inspirational lens. It's actually live right now on my Instagram @inspiredmedico if you also want to listen to this and actually watch it for yourself. And yes, I do follow the unselfish content frameworks on my own page because I want to make sure if I'm telling you something, I'm not just telling you just to tell you. I'm telling you because it's been tested, it's been tried, not only on my account before my clients. I digress. Here's how instruction it. Idea, New York trip with Adobe. Goal to inspire. Hook, I started with a limiting belief of my audience. I need more followers to do bigger things. That was my opening hook for the voiceover. Then in the body, the bulk of the voiceover, I let the visuals eclipse to all the cool parts. Square, the flights, the outfits, the food, all of the fun things, the vibes, but my voiceover supported that hook and focused on that story. I used my own experiences as context to disprove the limiting belief that was the hook. And one of the lines I said in the body of the voiceover was Adobe didn't invite me because I had X amount of followers. They invited me because Sophie shot out to pretty little marketer. She mentioned me and that was a connection and that connection opened up opportunities. I also said in the voiceover, don't treat every post like the next hit single, but treat your entire page like something that somebody could binge. Both points that connect and support the hook. And I wrapped it up with a takeaway. How you can unlock these same kinds of opportunities without needing a massive following and really reminding you that that self sabotaging thought or the common narrative that you hear everywhere that following is this and you have to grow a big following. You have to do this. It's just not true. Not only am I proving that to you with the visuals, with the vlog, the format, but in the voiceover I'm speaking directly to you. So I'm showing you that I'm doing it, but I'm telling you and giving you inspiration to empower you to do it too. And that's what makes it unselfish. It's about you, the audience, even though I'm the main character in the video. Now let's say I wanted to do the same Adobe vlog, but make it more entertaining. It's going to completely change the way I do the voiceover, the edits and everything, but I could take the same clips and focus on a wild story, like how I ended up at Adobe after being in the ER. And this is actually a true story. I was in the ER two weeks before I went to Adobe. I went to the ER and then I got the email and then I caught on the flight. So maybe the way I would start this vlog would be a hook of a video of me in the ER with a freeze frame with the, that was a really terrible sound. So sorry, the little record scratch of like, yep, that's me. Here's how I ended up here. And because the goal is to be more entertaining, I want the entire voiceover to match with humor with chaos. I want to make you laugh, keep you engaged, giving you that like main character energy, but in a funny, almost like self-deprecating way. Or I could go to the educational route. So I could keep the same visuals, but my voiceover and the voiceover hooks specifically would be here are three things I learned at Adobe that will change how creators approach brand partnerships. This one doesn't really have that personal story angle. It's definitely more focused on value, delivering that
value clearly so it's tangible but is still formatted with that lifestyle type of content. It's not just that traditional face to cam here, the three points. Same vlog, three different angles all on selfish. So here's your new workflow. Next time you want to do a lifestyle piece of content, you want to choose your vlog idea or whatever the lifestyle content is. Usually a vlog is the most common. Then you want to choose your dominant goal, entertain, educate or inspire. And number three, let that goal drive the way you structure your hook, your visuals, your voice over your captions or CTA. Once you have that goal, it's going to be so much easier to come up with a hook. You don't need to get overwhelmed with all these hook options or overwhelmed with all of the millions of sound bites that you can use because they all have to align and amplify the main message. And that's how you make lifestyle content that actually connects. Because again, this isn't about doing more. It's about doing what you're already doing just more intentionally. And the last thing I want you to take away from this is know this in all the examples that I showed you with just that one idea. I just go one level deeper. The problem that I see with a lot of quote unquote selfish content is it goes so surface level. It doesn't give me context. It doesn't give me why I need you to go one level deeper. It doesn't mean you need to expose your entire life online. Okay. It doesn't mean you need to become the next reality TV star. So we see all your tea and everything about you, but just one level deeper, one notch deeper in vulnerability, one notch deeper in humor where you're going to say something maybe a little bit embarrassing. But that's the way that you are with your inner circle. That's the way you are with your friends. So when you're thinking about all this with the framework and the method and the steps that I showed you, also ask yourself not only what's in it for them, but how could I go just that one level deeper. And that is all for today. I hope this helped you reframe how you approach lifestyle content and vlogging and it gives you a clear path to creating content that actually connects. If you loved this episode, if you had any highlights, please, please, please share it with me. I absolutely love when the girl who pops create their unselfish vlogs and you tag me and I get to hype you up and see it. So make sure to send this to a creator bestie, a friend. If you do decide to create unselfish content, unselfish vlogs, please tag me. I'd love to see it. And again, if you wanted to go a little bit deeper and you want a resource that you can always come back to where all this knowledge can be in one place where it's super easy for you to follow, I am so excited to finally say that the unselfish content guide is finally live after so many of you have been asking me and telling me, I really, really, truly do appreciate it. As a lot of you know, my one-on-one intensive offering and just my one-on-one social strategy coaching offerings, we have been booking out like two to three months in advance, which is such a blessing. I'm so incredibly thankful and grateful. I want to meet all the girl who pops. I want to you code your content. I want all of it. But that does mean I know so many of you are waiting. So I wanted to give you something that you can get instant access to. So whether you have booked a call in advance or whether maybe a call isn't aligned for you, I wanted to give you a resource that isn't just going to sit in your email. Isn't just going to be like, okay, this is another thing I bought and I'll just get to it later. I literally made simple with structure, with action items, with resources so that you can take it and take action. That is my goal for you. I want you to take it. I want you to take action. I want you to take everything that you're learning. From here, if you do decide to opt into the course, all the free resources I want you to take it, you code it, make it your own and bring it to life. But if you take anything else away, just please remember, your lifestyle is already enough. You're not boring. We just got to frame it in a way that actually connects. Okay? And that is all. Break a leg.
