UNEARTHED ARCANA - MYSTIC SUBCLASSES: You're Not a Subclass, You're a Support Group

The transcript captures a podcast episode where the hosts review new D&D Unearthed Arcana content, specifically four subclasses. The primary focus is the "Warrior of the Mystic Arts" Monk, which they heavily criticize for its unoriginal design. They note it functions identically to the Eldritch Knight but with sorcerer spells, offering only basic spellcasting at level 3, a resource conversion feature at level 6, and passive or copied abilities at levels 11 and 17. The hosts deem it boring and lazy, arguing it lacks a unique identity. They propose more engaging mechanics, such as spell reflection or monk-themed metamagic, to make the subclass compelling. The discussion is interspersed with tangential humor, personal stories, and brief anticipation for the more interesting "Vestige Patron Warlock" subclass. Overall, the review is dismissive of the Monk's design, viewing it as a missed opportunity for creativity.

(laughing) - Just product placement right off the bat. All right. - Glint Volgares. - Glint Volgares. - Can we get them to sponsor us? - Oh man, that would be so cool. (laughing) - I'm counting on Clausewede to being in the chat. - Yeah, Clausewede's in the chat. - Yeah, I was actually Clausewede's asking where I was this past week. I was outside of Davis, like right at the mountains on a ranch, doing some work, and it was a lot of fun. And I enjoyed it. - Is that outside? Is that outside of Clausewede? - It is. - East of San Francisco, west of Davis. - Right. - Like maybe Northeast, you'd call it. If I drove due west, I would actually have been in like Napa and Sonoma. - Nice. - So Clausewede. - Yeah. - Clausewede, do you like Scotch? - Oh, just because he's Scottish, you assume he likes Scotch. - No, I didn't assume. - That's why he has. - That's why he has. - Yeah. I feel like I remember Clausewede maybe doesn't drink in my head, like I have that in me. - Yeah, I don't think Clausewede drinks. - And that's okay. - No, don't drink alcohol at all. Okay, good. So I'm not crazy. Well, you live longer and that's great. (laughing) - No one knows. I mean, they talked to this one guy who lived to be like 110. And they asked him what his secret was and he said, like what his diet was like and he said, he drinks three gallons of Thunderbird wine a week and red, fried, and fat back. So no one knows what they're talking about to help. Oh my God. - It's terrible. - Terrible Dan. - It's awesome. (laughing) - Shame.gift. - Yeah. - You can say it for a minute. - No, I don't mean Jeff. I mean Giff. I refuse. - Oh man. - I love this discussion with you again. (laughing) - I love that that joke. - I guess. - What? - I haven't seen you guys in like five days. - That's true. - Yeah, that's true. - It feels like it's been forever. - Well, that's a legend. - You sir, what? My kids make fun of me sir, like do you mean peanut butter? - Okay. - No. - Where's GFA lemon juice? - Yeah, Giff is lemon. Here it's a peanut butter. - Yeah. - And it's delicious. - Here in the caramel. - It's really thick. - Huh? - Okay. - That's crazy. - So, two's GFN Scotland. - You also have what people call urn brew, but I know that's done as burdell. This is pronounced urn brew, correct? - Urn brew. - Yeah. - I feel like I've had it and I liked it. And I wondered why it wasn't more of a thing. You're missing an O in that. (laughing) - One day I'm missing it, but. - Oh, that is. - Oh, I, it's been a good weekend. Like it's probably been one of the more relaxing weekends I've had since the holidays, you know, the holidays just ended. So first robotics, they had their kickoff last Saturday. So for all of you who celebrate. - Nice. - Natural. - First is in first of the year and also first is in that is the name of the organization. - Yeah. - For people confused. - Yeah. - I'm still confused. I have no idea what the hell you're talking about. - See my older boys do the first robotics competition like they, it's, oh, way through. But for the high school system, last Saturday, they announced the game for the year. And so the way this goes, like for folks at home, like this is cool. If you're interested and you have kids of appropriate age, get them involved. 'Cause it's very easy to get involved. The learning rate or the barrier to entry is really low. There's a lot of both the students and mentors at most teams will help your student get involved. Even if they don't have a robotics background, even if they don't really have like computer science mechanical background, anything with the sword, they will get them involved. But the punch line is last Saturday, and out's the game. And what happens once they announce the game is the kids then go design a robot from scratch. They will spend the next several weeks building that robot. There will be a mad scramble in the last three weeks before the first competition to program that robot. And then they will go to a competition with a bunch of other schools and play the game for the very first time. And they do this every year. Like it's really awesome. I am like, I remember you talking about our last year as well. Yeah, and what I'll say is like I've worked in professional robotics off and on for over a decade at this point, I'm continually amazed at what all of these high school students can accomplish. And at least for our team, like the students really do lead it. Hey, by the way, Randall, I think you might have a bit of an echo. Oh, no. I think I'll get canceled. I sure am into everybody's echoes are canceled. Well, because when I talk, I can hear a little bit of my voice coming back. I have to call it. Do you have feedback turned on, maybe? I don't know. It seems fine now, but earlier. Anyway, it's weird because I feel scandalized right now. I never see the your bare head just exposed to the world. So a little behind the scenes for folks, my headphones are charging for the second one, but they didn't have a lot of charge. And I forgot to charge some. They just raw. They're just raw dog in it. I said that I did not have headphones. Dad is asking if I told the system I had headphones are not. OK. All right. And so yeah, you've guessed what we're here to do tonight. We're here to talk about on their dark problems. You clever, clever listener from zero clues. Yeah, that's OK. There they're mystery solvers out there. Yeah, no, so get stoked. This is a weird walk. With you. [MUSIC PLAYING] Welcome to the RPG Bob. Podcast. I'm Randall James, and with me is Tyler Campstra. Hi, everybody. And Ashela. I'm bored. Yeah. I'm already bored. OK. All right. I'm-- [INAUDIBLE] What we got in this unearthed arcana were four subclasses, and that's it. No extra items, no spell list, no-- Yeah. It's cool. What I'm talking about. Help me to this apart. It's fine. It's called mystic subclasses. This isn't-- I'm not crazy, right? This is not a retake on a previous UA that we've seen. Correct. Is it four of these or new? Like is it an extension? Is it likely this-- I think it's probably a-- I think it's probably an expansion of the arcane subclasses that we saw. So I would assume that they're going in the same supplement. OK. I had a thought. In D&D35, we had a series of books called Complete Blink. There were basically giant books of feats and prestige classes. Like there was literally nothing in the mix of character options. There was complete warrior for martial characters, for fighters, barbarians, et cetera. There was complete arcane, complete divine, and complete scoundrel. I think there was-- oh, there was also complete sionics, but I forget that sionics exist. But-- So what did-- Did she were doing that again? Maybe. It seems like they're trying to go back to the 3.5 way of doing things, like release more content, which do they not remember how that went last time for them? Yeah, it went badly. Oh, god. Yeah. It's a little bit of a sense then. All right. Well, let's get into it. I think we've beaten around the bush now. Let's beat this dead horse. All right. So what do we get? Four subclasses. That's it. That's all. That's everything. Yes. And I'm going to scroll through it quickly. Warrior of the Mystic Arts Monk. Aleco in the card, you named it Warrior of the Mystic Barge. Well, there was originally a typo, and then I just decided to leave it. It was too funny. It's fantastic. No, no. It's kind of how I feel about it. [INAUDIBLE] Oh, it's still the spell of a word paladin. Patrick's team. Sure. I'm sorry. I can do that. Yes, I know. Like, that's what they named it. Geez. Yeah. No, they're not getting-- You're sped up at the names. Where? Which I think you made a good observation, but we'll get to that in time, Tyler. The vestige patron Warlock, which, if anybody seemed total recall, it's basically that. Well, I'm cooked by pop culture, I will just say. And when I hear the word vestige, I now only associated with Michael Gambon in Elder Scrolls Online, where you reverse to your main character as vestige all the time. Come vestige. We must stand against May runes, DeGon, or Mullik Baal, or whoever the main character is. Come vestige. So I mean, the very specific reference for like 2% of the audience. I mean, the character is vestige for the players. So I guess they couldn't just like come play our character. Little too on the nose. Or let you use your own audio clip. That would have been the thing to do, right? Yeah. I mean, if you're curious who Michael Gambon is, if you played Dumbledore, that's free. Or the original Dumbledore is dead. It's not maybe because the over-school of online is also both. No, no. No, not as old as Harry Potter. Other scrolls online came out in like 2013. The first story of Potter came out like 2001, dude. Yeah, other scrolls online came out after Skyrim. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Probably why we haven't gotten Elder Scrolls 6 honestly. Yeah. People are just like, yeah, Elder Scrolls online. What do you need? Why would we make games when we can make money? Well, you can make a service, exactly. Yeah. Why do you want to make me sad? All right. Speaking of making me sad, let's talk about the Warrior of the Mystic Arts Month. OK. All right. They finally gave us a monk who can actually cast spells. So that's neat. They don't use their focus points to cast spells. They just get us get spell slots and a spell is now. Yeah. All right. And that's kind of neat. Yeah. There are one third spellcasters, so like same as arcane trickster or Eldritch Knight. So it makes a ton of sense to compare those to each other. So going through the features, level three, you get spell casting. No. It's sorcerer spells, which is kind of fun, because arcane trickster and Eldritch Knight both get wizard spell. So now a one third castor that takes from somebody else. And that's cool. Yeah. So like if Eldritch Knight is a fusion of fighter and wizard, then monk it, this is a fusion of monk and sorcerer, which you don't really see a lot. That's a big choice for sure. Yeah. And it's like an impossible multi-class to build. You could do a fighter wizard pretty easily doing a monk sorcerer functionally impossible. Yeah. But he is wizard, wizard spell casting ability for sorcerers spells, which feels weird. Yeah, it does. It's fine. Okay, so I'm gonna compare this to the Eldritch Knight real quick, just looking at what we get at level three. So at level three, you get the spellcasting of a level one sorcerer. An Eldritch Knight gets the spellcasting of a level one wizard, plus they also get their war bond feature, which lets them bind to a magic weapon and conjure it as what a bonus action, whatever. So they've got a fun little ribbon ability, Mystic Arts Monk just gets the spellcasting. Yep, that's it. Yeah. And since you're a half-caster, you get two level one spell slots and a couple of cantrips, so it's like, you're a quarter caster. Yeah, why didn't you just take magic initiative? Yeah. Yeah, so really you get almost nothing at level three. The subclass starts to actually feel like itself at level six, I think. Yeah. So this is where we get, oh god, what was it called, Mystic Focus. So this is basically font of magic, which is the sorcerer thing that lets you turn sorcery points into spell slots and back, but you use focus points to create spell slots or to turn spell slots into focus points. So something one of our discord members pointed out is it seems like Watts he learned from the coffee lock situation, which is, so they changed the verbiage. So you now use your focus points to recover spell slots, not create. So you can't just sit around and create like 15 spell slots, sorry. Yeah. Yeah, so that, that's a little better worded. It's basically the same mechanic, like the conversion rates are super similar. Obviously, you can only go up to four fob of spell slots because that's where Mystic art spell casting ends. So that's fine. And since you get your focus points back on a short rest, you can't actually create a fairly large number of spell slots per day and cast a lot of low level spells. So that's kind of neat, like just imagine having shield, just so much shield all the time. And that's fine. Yeah. It's fine. Also at six level, you get a thing called Mystic Fighting style, which is essentially kind of similar to what the Elder Giant gets. Or when you use the attack action on your turn, you can use bonus action, or you can replace one of the attacks with the casting of a can trip that has a casting time of one action. So very similar to Elder Giant. Yeah. So most likely you're going to be doing like true strike or something because that's the go to damage can trip these days. And that's fine. Yeah. Yeah. It's not super exciting. Oh, I guess you could. Let's see. So monks obviously don't depend on concentration a lot. So I think monks are actually going to get a lot of benefit out of blade ward specifically, like minus 1D4 against all attacks against you. Pretty good. Yeah. Sorry. I fell asleep. Get me to wake me when we get to the interesting part. Yeah, I know. Let's talk about level 11. Centered. Yeah. Whenever you, whenever you spend focused points to use flurry of blows, patient defense or step of the wind, you have a advantage on any saving throws you make to maintain concentration until the start of an extra. So bored. Yeah. So bored. If you were using like if you're using concentration, you know, to sustain something like blade ward, you are in combat and you're getting punched all the time. It is likely that you're going to drop concentration all the time. And so by level, when this has been extremely frustrating and you are now excited to have centered focus, yeah. Of course, like by this level, you have between mystic focus and just the spell slots you actually get. So pretty easy access to shield to just block attacks and then you have deflect attacks to mitigate incoming damage. So already when you get hit, like you're not going to be taking a lot of damage very often by martial character standards. So advantage on concentration might not be super amazing. I don't know. Also, it's purely passive. So it just feels boring. Yeah. Yeah. It's very boring. All right. Level 17 improved mystic fighting style. But when you take the attack action on your turn, you can replace two of the attacks with the casting of one of your level one or two sorcerer spells that has a casting time of an action. So I noticed in the card that you pointed out that that's both of your attack actions. So you're basically just taking an action to cast a spell. Yeah. But I thought about it. Okay. I understand why they phrased it this way because when as a monk, you have to take the attack action to as a bonus action, hit with your own arm strike or do flurry of blows. So this allows you to cast a spell and also still do that. They changed that in the 2024 rules. You don't have to do that. Oh, did they? Yeah. Oh, that was one of the huge buffs that they gave the monk. You can just do flurry of blows or whatever else as a bonus action regardless. Okay. Then this is stupidly phrased. Yes. Like, I'm wondering if they forgot to or if they really did just pop and he paced it straight from fighter. Yeah, maybe, maybe they just forgot. Okay. All right. The Eldritch Knight improved war magic and somebody else read the unorthorcona as I'm going. Just tell me where it gets different. When you take the attack action on your turn, you can replace two of the attacks with a casting of one or one of your level one or level two wizard spells that has a lasting time of an action. That's the only word different. They just copy pasted. What's he? And you're not even trying to hide the fact that you're being lazy now. It was a wee subtle thing. So you said level one or level two, it's level one or two sorcerers. Oh, functionally identical. Yeah. Boy, that economy of words. Okay. This is sub-flat blocks. Can we keep going? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. I agree with Quasit's statement earlier where it's like, why is it that Watsy when lately the design philosophy is when they can't think of a sub-class, just give it spell casting and call it a day. I mean, usually it's give it misty staff and call it a day. So this is okay. So, yeah, I mean, we're not doing that. Congratulations. I think they've just been really wanting to have monk do spell casting because everybody has a way to do spell casting, but every time they do it, people are just like, this is garbage. Stop it. So like, I, you know, we're just going to do the basic casting feature. There you go. We give up. Are we happy now? No, I'm not happy, Watsy. The sucks. Give it a bit. It's not even a cool concept. I don't like it. Go away. Okay. I'm okay with the idea of monks getting spell casting. I think making it sorcerer spell casting is interesting. I think that's an interesting choice. Fair enough. I think adding spells to the monk could give them a lot of interesting capabilities and obviously make some future proof because the spell list will grow. But they need something else and the level 11 and 17 features are obviously just like beyond the paper. Yeah. If you're going to do spell casting on a monk, make it more interesting than just Eldridge Knight, but it's monk now. It is objectively worse. Okay. So, this question I already know the answer. A half-caster would be too much. Yeah. It would be functionally impossible to do a half-caster because you get your spell slots so late. Yeah. Like, they would come in, well, they wouldn't get level two spells quite, but they'd get level two spells right at level four if I remember right. No. Is that right? Four or five? No. No. They could do a half-caster. It would be weird and kind of awkward, but they could do it. Would the Eldridge Knight just be sitting there going like, what am I? Who am I? Yeah. I think there are a lot of Eldridge Knight players off. I think there's a way to make this good and interesting without you just straight ripping off the Eldridge Knight. Okay. So, if everything that was here more or less stayed as it was, let me see. I would never play this class. No, no, very well. If it stays as a one-third spell, but we get something else, one more stick. Yeah. You okay. Maybe. It needs like maybe one more button to push, I would say. I think it needs like, it needs an interesting ribbon ability at level three and then the level 11 and 17 abilities need to be completely rethought. Yeah. What if instead of just being able to catch munitions, you could effectively like, you could use the same skill to catch magic and throw it back if they-- There you go. That's-- Yeah. That's a good, there's levels feature right there. Yeah. Yeah. Level 11, like level 11 and level 17 feel like afterthoughts. Or just like, I don't know, concentration and can we just copy paste the capstone future of Eldridge Knight in call of the day? I want to go home. Yeah. So, yeah. Let me cast a level one or two sorcerer spell as a bonus action as a level 17 feature. I don't know. Like, let me magic missile instead of flurry of blows. Well, actually, okay. Okay, I get to-- I can effectively return people's spells back at them and give me a subset of metamagic. That could be cool. Yeah, metamagic might be too complicated, but I-- maybe. It might work. I wonder if there's some interesting metamagic ideas that you could in this-- in whatever this book is, both give the sorcerer additional metamagic but have custom metamagic that is very monkey. Oh. Yeah, that could be fun. I'm not opposed. Okay. All right. There you go. Sorry. I'll try harder next time. It's really showing how lazy this is. I like some of these subclasses. We're going to talk about way more than I know. No, no, no. No, no, no. I'm not-- when we get to the vestige warlock, that's when things get interesting for me. The rest of these are meh. But-- I saw some things that thought we were okay. All right. Okay. You're wrong. Objectively, but all right. You're still-- you're still-- you're still-- you're still-- you're already doing it? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Tyler, read your summary. And really don't like unethical spellcaster. Or the way I phrased it to be, you know, Mage Slayer feet. What if we expanded that out into a subclass? A bit. Yeah. (laughing) All right, so guardian bond. I like this. I think that this can be fun. Guardian bond bonds the ally, spend a reaction to add your charisma to their AC if they're within five feet of you. If they're within your reach, it's actually the, so when you bond with them, they have to be within five feet of you. I think the bond lasts an hour, and then from there, if they are within your reach, you can buff their AC. Add your charisma modifier. Now, remind folks at home, or the Paladin, what is your, what's your castor skill? Charisma. So you're already investing there anyway. Yeah. This could be a big deal. You're adding plus one plus two pretty quickly. It's gonna be plus three all the way at plus five. The issue is that we'll get to in a second. You need to have your buddy within like your reach, which for most people is gonna be within five feet of you, unless you're using a pull arm. And because of some of the features later that require you to be in melee, to benefit from them, that means this is functionally only useful for other like martial people that are next to you, rather than what you would think it to be used for, which is to protect your squishy people. And people who are in the front lines are probably gonna have good AC anyway. You hope. So I, that's, I'm really excited. And when I read this, I was not thinking about the squishy people whatsoever. I assumed I am 100% at the front lines, making sure that basically the DM's only choice is to hit me. Because if you try to hit my buddy, the other martial, I'm just gonna buff their AC once per round. And you're never gonna hit them. You're practically never gonna hit them. So your only choice is to come for me, or the worst case is we've all done the tank fallacy. And now the DM's like, well, I have to go for the casters. Yeah. Or disengage, or just, there are lots of creatures that have ranged attacks that don't have disadvantage when you're in melee. So they'll just like, cool, I'm gonna hit the caster back there. Yeah. So it doesn't really solve the problem. It's not like, this isn't like guardian pathfinder too, requisite pathfinder too, reference. Where you can functionally make someone just focus on you rather than your squishies, because Taunt doesn't really have a range on it. And it affects everybody, not just one guy who's standing next to you. Yeah. I honestly, this isn't perfect. Like obviously the casters are still occasionally gonna get hit, your buddy's gonna get hit. You have this reaction once per round that I'm assuming I need to double check the language. But I'm assuming the AC boost is only for the triggering attack. Also, I mean, if you're looking for monsters to focus on you rather than your buddies, I think it's Crown Paladin already has a better feature than this, which is anyone who's like within your aura and gets hit, you take the damage and set. So it does crown of the Paladin stuff worse. And you have to, yeah, I don't know. It's, we're moving concept and cool and concept and execution could be better. It reminds me, we've seen some classes recently that have features that like if I, is a ton like feature, if I use this, then if you attack anyone but me, you're gonna take a penalty on the hit, there's been a few of those, yeah. So I'm partnering like that's you and your buddy up there. It's like, well, if he doesn't hit you, he's gonna take a penalty everywhere else, but if he does hit you, I'm bonded to you, so I'm going to protect you and I'm gonna give you a bit bonus. Now effectively, everybody in the party has at least, you know, two point swing on the dice roll. Like I've heard, I'm not saying it's a bad feature. I just don't think it's as good a feature as I would want it to be. I understand that. I do think people are gonna feel really good turning hits and a misses. Let's try again. Okay. The other level three feature you get, subclass spells, they're fine. This is the first paladin we've seen that gets shield, which is interesting, considering it's already notoriously difficult to kill a paladin, giving them shield feels like a lot. Yeah, and so now you're getting into the situation where you either protect your body or if you attack you, it's not gonna be able to hit you either. Yeah. Just how long will it take me to piss my DM off? Anyway, so this buzz you get our detect magic shield, see invisibility, silence, counters 12, just to all magic, we'll talk about why that's a problem in a second. Freedom of movement, Odaloox, Resilience, Fear and Circle of Power and Hollow. Yeah, weird choices. I mean, they make sense for the type of paladin this is. Very abgeration, heavy to basically shut down style casters essentially. Yeah. Right, it's entirely counter spell and dispel magic. Why don't you like this? Okay, so this paladin yet again, like we're getting another paladin that is overly reliant on charisma, which means that you're once again going to be building a shalele paladin around charisma because counter spell is now a constitution save, which means if you wanted to be any sort of reliable, you need to maximize your spell casting stat. Dispel magic, similarly, like it's dependent on your casting stat and also since you're a half-caster, you can't just cast it at a higher level spell slot to overcome whatever you're dispelling. You're going to have to gamble on that ability check. So yeah, there's one good way to build this subclass again. Yeah, it's a problem with a lot of 2024 subclasses. Like there's one correct way to build this subclass and the rest don't exist. Yeah, I feel like you're not going to use counter spell. No. Okay, well, you'll be ignoring one of your core features then what we'll get to in a second. That's true. So then we have spell guard strike also at third level, which is just the mage slayer fee. Yeah, it really is. What do you see? Someone casting a spell, you can hit them with a reaction. All right. Does it let us interrupt it? No, it does not. That's what a big slayer was good in older editions. I like that they call out verbal, somatic, and material components like any one of the three. So even if they're just standing there holding a material component, like not casting the spell, like, sionics don't use verbal or somatic components. You just think about them. So if they're just standing there holding a thing, be like, no, I see what you're doing slap. Yeah, also more of a more of a like, oh, you know, you know how misty step is so ubiquitous to him. You thought you got to use misty step rules for me. Not for the you don't have only week at the misty step. Yes. Send me another cast or murder. All right. Level seven, aura of concentration. You and allies in your aura get advantage to maintain concentration. This is very powerful. Yeah, that is pretty good. It's boring, but it's good. Yeah. And that's the level after you get or of protection. So you and all of your allies now get your charisma bonus and advantage on those saves. You're never losing concentration. Yeah. Yeah. Very. Yeah. And just just get a resilient feet as well. Really? Yeah, but mental finger to your dear DM about no. So remember, I mentioned counter spell is a core feature. Yeah. So level 15. That's the spell breaking blade immediately after you hit a creature with your spell guard strike. That's the major slayer feeding. You can cast counter spells part of the same reaction. When you cast counter spell to spell slot, that slot isn't extended if the spell fails to stop his spell. It's fine. But again, as Tyler said, if you don't build your pallid in a specific way, this feature's functionally useless. Yeah. I mean, the best thing I'll say for it is like because it's effectively free to fail. Like you were already going to use the spell guard strike. Like just tripping. And you're going to fail a lot of the time. Medicationally. But we need. No, I mean, so again, this is this is the this is the issue I have with the UA that this UA is like, none of this is strictly bad. All of this is fine. Like, that's the problem that I have. I think this is fine. I did not like the monk. Yeah, the monk is just boring. The rest of these are fine with a capital F except vestige. Vestige, I think has some cool ideas. We'll get to it later. But yeah, it's it's a problem I've had with a lot of watsy supplementary material when it comes to mechanics. It's just like, eh, all right. Whatever. It's like, oh, a watsy release to you a cool. What's the next adventure coming out? Because there are adventures that their adventures have been good. This is true. The mechanics are been bad. Yeah. Are not bad. Just mid level 20 capstone, eternal spell guard. That's very cool name. Ah. All right. Three bullets. The target of your gochardian bond gets resistance to all damage just all the time. You don't have to be next to them. It's great. Protection for magic. So, you're going to have to be next to you. And then you're going to have to be next to you. beat the bad guys but it'll keep your whole party alive and that's pretty great. It's a cool feature to think about in theory. You'll never get it because you're never going for level 20. I mean, yeah. Don't ruin this for me. Yeah. Let me have dreams. Yeah, that's it again. This talent in some class is fine. Yes, it excite me. Not really. What I play it. I guess maybe if I felt like I was facing against a lot of spellcasters. But that's the other thing is like, if you're not facing against a lot of spellcasters, you're going to not feel like you have a subclass. So I don't know as what it is. Yeah, that's true. Granted, spellcasting enemies get really common at high levels. So at low levels, this might be kind of frustrating and then gradually it'll pick up and highlight this. So play this if you. if your DM is a network level campaign at level 20, then you're going to have a great time. Low levels, it's going to be fresh. I mean, if we get another adventure like eve of ruin, where it's it starts above level 10, this would be fantastic for eve of ruin. 100%. Yeah. So if your DM runs eve of rune is in the 2024 rules, you could do a lot worse in the class. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Magic Steeler Rogue. I hate this class. Okay. I can't get serious. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You know how you hate the monk? I hate this one. This one actually is. This one actually makes me mad. I want to read the actual description. Please. Yeah. Okay. While ordinary thieves are cutting purses and burglary homes, a magic steeler is after a much more valuable prize. Magic. The magic steeler praise on spellcasters, repurposing their magic and eluding divination spells to take magical power at the point of a knife. Here's my complaint. Well, actually like going. Go ahead. Go ahead. No, don't go ahead. Don't point in this subclass. Do you actually like steal magic and like, ha ha, do anything good with it? No. Okay. The problem I have with this class before we get into it. Very cool concept, garbage execution. It's essentially like, oh, you want to do something cool? No, no. You're going to make the real heroes of the story do something. Which is the wizard and you're in your in your hearty. You don't have a wizard. Well, screw you then. You don't get a subclass. Speaking as the wizard, I'm fine with this. Yeah. You should all be happy to ride my coatale. Okay. I'm not opposed to the concept of a support row. I think it's an idea that could use more attention. Like we really only have the mastermind row. And that's kind of it. So like, I'm not opposed to a support row. But this is so reliant on you having another spellcaster in your group. And it makes like if there's a spellcaster in a group, they're going to they're going to love you. Yeah. And they're going to feel really awesome about it. You don't get to do a lot of cool stuff. You just can make it get to let other people feel cool, which is not how you do a support class. You may get you do a support class because like you do help other people be cool, but you get some satisfaction by doing that. This is just like, do I get to do anything cool except give some minor buffs to my my friends? No. Okay. I'll just sit in the corner and be sad now. But let's go. Let's go through it. Let's go through this garbage class. So I never have to talk about it. All right. Okay. Level one or not level. I'm sorry. Level three, empower sneak attack. A number of times per day equal to your intelligence modifier. So congratulations. Welcome to multiple ability dependence. You can spend a reaction to absorb energy from a nearby spell and use to add plus XD6 to your sneak attack where X is the level of the spell. So somebody cast fireball. You use a reaction. You get to add 3D6 to a sneak attack before the end of your next turn. So you know, don't miss. It's fine. Yeah. I like that. It'll scale like. Yeah. The scaling is nice. Yeah. So if someone casts a power word kill on you and theory, you would get 96, but you'd be dead. You might have more than a hundred hit points. I hope at level 20. Although what you got to hope is that he uses power word kill on the wizard. You're like, sorry, but at least I get 96 for once. This is true. Like when you're using his power word kill, you also get to do this. And that's true. That's true. There's a fun coordination saying of life, you know, hey, I only have so many of these. When are you going to use the big spell? You're using the big spell? No, wait. I'll save my reaction. Because nothing would trick you more than it's like, I just use my reaction. It's like, oh, yeah. No, I'm I'm I'm upcasting fireball. You jerk. Are you? I think that will still count. Because like when you upcast a spell, it is treated as a spell of the level of whatever slot. But what I'm saying is like, I just burnt my reaction and now you're casting the highlights. Oh, yeah. Yeah. So there would be some coordination of like, when are you breaking out the big guns? Are you going to do it this fight? Because I would like to use this feature of this fight. Yeah. I mean, that's again, an extra damage. Great. Yeah. Great feature in theory. If you don't have a spellcaster in your class, congratulations. We don't have a feature. Yeah. You don't have a feature. Do not do not do not play this. If you if you were not any party, I probably at least once, spellcaster. Yeah. I would say to at minimum, even one is going to be like two, two few. Yeah. Because realistically, onecaster still going to pretty much rely on canned ships most of the time. So again, most of the time, unless you're facing against other spellcaster, you don't have a class feature. Yeah. Yeah. The point, the the martial enemy downs the wizard and the magic stealer rogue is just like, what am I going to do this whole fight? Yeah. And then your your your wizard finally is like, podcasts the first level spell is like, oh, it's my time to shine. And they go in and they miss. I'm like, I hate my whole life. Okay. Everything about it. So a typical D&D party fighter rogue cleric wizard, you're going to have two full spellcasters. If you use this with your fullcasters, highest level spell slots, you were effectively doubling your sneak attack damage every time you use the reaction. So like that, that feels good when that happens. But you guys are absolutely right on all the criticisms. So the best thing. The best thing you want in this party, at least until level 10, is a warlock. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that checks out above level 10. Then you want like the regular full spellcasters and be like, oh, warlock shoot, get out of here. What do you mean? But then again, you would get to do that at most like twice a combat. So still. Yeah. It's a combat like twice for combat with a warlock at their high level spell. It's not look. I'm again, it's a fine feature. But it's a little bit too it's a little bit too party composition dependent for my life. Yeah. I do I hear that, but I feel like it's a safe choice for so many parties. And like for folks at home, like know what other people are playing like don't shoot with the party. You're like oops, all my bearings are you. Yeah. I mean, just just just so we're clear, I would rather play a wild magic sorcerer, which everybody likes to say is stupidly inconsistent than this. Because at least I get to do something every turn that feels like my subclass, even if it actively hurts me. It's so fun. This is like sometimes I get a feature and sometimes I'm just a rogue. Okay. I'm going to do one more nice thing about this feature and then we can talk about other features. Sure. Yeah. It's one of the more impactful things here and it is going to scale really well all the way to 20. And given that like most combat, most combat's art design to last handle turns on the order of three turns. If you only got to use this twice for combat and you know, somebody in the chat is pointing out it's like well, it's two-thirds of the total combat. Yeah. That feels like I think there's a lot of positives here where it's going to come on early and maybe the complaint we're going to get to in a little bit is like this is one of the coolest things that they get. Yeah. You all still do three round combat. What's wrong with you? 2024 rules don't allow for three turns combat. No. In my experience, they average to about five turns now. So yeah. You can tell you that your players are doing something wrong, but I don't know. I'm not at your table. You can play pathfinder for three years now. Next, drain magic. That's not what this is. Yeah, it's really not. It's kind of just end spell. You don't get to use it. Yeah. I'm going to walk up to a buddy. I have a willing creature. I'm going to touch them and I'm going to end an ongoing level one or level two spell. And then they just went to taste either way. I just bet his face. Yes. Beautiful visual gag for this audio medium. You like that? You like that? Made drama? Yeah. Okay. So willingly in the effect that spell that level one, level two, smell. And then they get to gain a spell slot of level two or lower better. So obviously if they have a level two spell slot open, they're going to gain that. But if they don't, they'll regain a level one. So tell me if I'm crazy. Like as I read this, the idea is I have an effect that is now useless or is going to end soon. Come here. Combat associate. Will you please help me get my spell slot back? That's right. That's what this is. Like, yeah, make sure to do a quick fire here. You can have a new one now. You know what? You know what's weird about this feature? It feels like you're in a Frankenstein Egor situation. It's like, yes, I'm a lot of people. I said, Egor, come here. I need you to rub me. I need you to give me a massage. Please. Yeah, it's accurate. Am I wrong? No. Me, John, where is one shield? You could do shield with this, right? If you got to them before the beginning of your third or next turn, yeah, you could actually. So it's like, hey, I happen to in combat be going directly before you or I guess in 2024, I forget how this works in D.D. Can I hold my turn and then delay my turn? No. Okay, so good. If I have a reaction. Okay, so if I happen to go directly before you, I could approach you and it's like, hey, it's your turn anyway. Nobody's going to attack you. Let me and now you can have shield back. That's lame. One of the things that someone on the discord pointed out also is that according to the way this is phrased, it doesn't have to be a beneficial spell. Correct. It could be like hold, hold person. Yeah. They are willing. What level to but the the spell level part is only it only cares about. Actually, let me double check that wording before I say something. You can touch the willing creature and end one ongoing level, one or level two spell on it and the creature immediately recovers one expended spell slot of level two or lower the target's choice. Yeah. Yeah. Right. So you could like end hold person and they get a spell slot back. I guess if you saved drain magic for only that and you weren't wasting your turn to like boost shield or mage armor, this is fun. The problem is it doesn't scale at all. Like beyond low levels, enemies are going to stop having level one and two spells. Like in the 2024 rules, it's really like spellcasting enemies only have like three, maybe five spells, maybe a few more if it's like a lich or something, but they'll mostly have magic actions and then a handful of spells because the DM doesn't reasonably have time. Be like, oh yeah, they've got 20 spells that they can cast. Let me punt through these and figure out which one makes sense. No, that's ridiculous. We don't do that anymore. So literally, just they won't have first or second level spells to put on you for you to then remove. Yeah, this is the problem with the new Morton King in the way of doing magic on NPCs now, because yeah, they don't have spell lists anymore, and spell slots. They have, you can cast this at this level a number of times today. So yeah, once you get to high enough levels, this feature is useless for that. So you are just Igor and Frankenstein. Be like, do you need a massage master to recover your mage armor? Oh. OK, so what if it was a DC that was just like 10 plus spell level against your magic. So we're going to make this require int. And if you succeed, then you both in the effect, and they get a spell slot at that level. No, I don't think you need to do a skill challenge. Keep this the same. Just make it scale. Well, that's my answer to making it scale is by saying, but I don't think you need to do that. I don't think you need to make a skill check, because if you just say at this level, you can do half your level. Yeah, half your level plus one. Because you can only use it once per short rest or long rest. So realistically, you're only going to be using this once for combat, which doesn't feel overpowered today. And you're still doing an action to do this. So yeah, see what the problem is. Yeah, I'm not going to use my empowered sneak attack, because I'm rubbing the wizard. That's true. That is a huge problem. You can do it, buddy. Yeah, thanks Igor. Yeah, if it's going to be an action-- I am a good mage. The power. If it's going to be an action in Destiny's State-- why I hate this subclass? Because it feels like the wizard's Cody subclass. That's what it feels like. Cool, buddy. [LAUGHTER] OK. I really like playing a support, though. So again, a support-- I like playing support, too. But this just-- And I don't know. I don't know what about this class rubs me the wrong way. I just can't-- it feels like such a wizard-today class, which it just rubs me the wrong way. I don't know if you get your life. How did the magic-stealer rogue arrive at this lifestyle? Did they drop out of wizard college? And like-- Yeah, exactly. And again, it's-- you're not stealing magic from people. You're literally just giving it back to them. Yeah. Anyway. Nine magical sabotage. OK, I think this part is actually really good. So you get three new options for cunning strike, which is the thing where you trade some sneak attack damage to do a cool writer effect. First one, spell susceptibility. Target has disadvantage on the next saving throw makes against a spell. Awesome. Very good. Disrupt spell costs 3D6. Target's magical activity is disrupted. Whenever the target casts a spell during that time, it has to succeed on an intelligence saving throw, or the spell dissipates and the action or whatever is wasted. Notably, it doesn't say how it interacts with legendary actions, which is weird. But if they can somehow cast multiple spells per turn, it has to make an intelligence save for all of them. And intelligence saves are consistently the lowest save. So this is going to be really good. It's just going to shut off enemy spellcasters, like that alone. If that is all you got at this level, honestly, I'd be happy. Because that is awesome. And then the third option, steel resistance costs 2D6. You take a damage resistance off of your target, and you get it for one round. If they have that magic resistance. So like you-- if I read this correctly, I have to say I'm going to take their bludgeoning resistance. And then the DM gets to say they don't have any, I'm sorry, that is true, yes. But you will have observed-- Actually, if you were maybe not, man, that's interesting. You'll get the whole-- well, no, I'm just thinking through. A lot of DMs do the whole like, oh, your attack seemed less effective. Versus your-- oh, they're not going to take nine damage. They're taking five damage. And so you might not actually know what resistance is they have. And therefore, this is going to get useless off of it. What's that, Ash? I'm going to do what I always do. And be the Debbie Downer on this feature. Because I have to live up to the brand. It's a cool feature. Don't give me wrong. But again, we see a feature that if you don't have a spellcaster in your party, can you turn facing against spellcasters? And you're on facing against monsters that don't have resistances. Not an unrealistic scenario might I add. You again, don't have a feature. That's reasonable. Yeah. Yeah. All three of these, like they are-- or are liant on some external thing. Yeah. Or more realistically, you will only get to use one of these features most of the time. That's fair. But you do have a ton of other cunning action options. And you can only use one per sneak attack anyway. So-- Yeah. No, I-- Yeah, I get it. All of us, I don't want-- I don't want to say that this is a bad feature. It's too reliant on external factors for my taste. But that's reasonable. Maybe I'm being unreasonable. I don't know. All right. Level 13, a cult shroud. I don't know why they didn't just give us non-detection permanently. Like-- Yeah, I can't use it. Yeah. You cast it in a last for 24 hours. Just make it permanent then. Yeah. Like, why the extra step? What? I don't know. I don't know. You forgot to do it. I feel like my brain is melting. I don't understand why they've been phrasing things, the way they've been phrasing things. It's weird. Yeah. I don't know. Maybe they want you to have the choice to not have non-detection running. Like that's the best I can come up with. You could just say-- Also, you don't get spell slots, one compass, if that's what you're asking. So you get a free non-detection cast. Yeah. And that's it. So just make it last forever if you're going to do that. They're just going to do that at the start of the day anyway. Anyway, so level 13, we finally get an improvement to our drain magic, which now lets us affect third level spells. Woo! Yay! It took us to level 13 to do it. And you can use it as a bonus action, which means you can sneak attack us. Same turn. That is better, for sure. But I don't know. It's too late. If we've gotten that at level 9, the ability to cover level 3 spells should have come at level 9. This should have been level 4 spells. And then 17, give us level 5 spells. Like that, that would be useful. No enemies are going to be casting level 3 spells at this point. Enemies are going to be casting level 5 and 6 and 7 spells. They're probably not even going to have a lot of three spells on their spell lists. But I can get the wizard back there both. Sure can. Okay. Again, it's whatever. I'll be in the implosion. It's good. But again, it comes too late for it to be interesting. When you use Empower, sneak attack, that's the one that allows you to add force damage when someone casts a spell. You can force the person to make a constitution save. And on a failed save, they just lose the spell and they get stunned. Okay. Whatever. Really good. Stunned is awesome. Yeah. But it's a con save, which is hard. And it's-- Yeah, they're going to be most likely to just-- Especially at this level. Yeah. They're going to succeed that. Yeah. I think as like you're going to get to use this, you know, a couple times per combat. Well, three times per day, most likely. Like intelligence modifier times per day. You're probably not going to increase intelligence past 16. So expect-- And again-- And again-- And again-- And again-- You don't have a spell. So if you're fighting against a harass, which is level 17, not unrealistic idea, you just functionally don't have a 17 level feature. Yeah. If I have a castor in the party, I can still use the cast. No. Well, you can use the ultra-translution. Yeah, but that's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying. I'm saying you expectively don't have a 17 level feature if you're not specifically fighting against a spell cast. That's fair. But what I'm just going to do instead is they should add the stun effect as a rider on the empowered sneak attack. Period. Oh, well, yes. I mean, still give it the constitution saving throw obviously because stun is amazing. But that guarantees that as long as you have a spell castor in your party, you still have access to your capstone. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense to me. Yeah, I agree with that. Okay. And then the spell dissipation would just be a bonus when you happen to be fighting castors. Yeah. Let's do that. That sounds great. I feel like I'm being reasonable. And I'm not saying this class is bad. It just makes me mad because it's just like I'm not the star of the show. My wizard is. I wanted to have some class that helps me out. I don't get any of that. None of my features really help me all that much. They just help my castor. This is true. I don't know. I don't like that. I don't like a class that's to hold into another class for it to work. It feels gross to me. Yeah. It puts me in mind of this creature that's just like, can I go and sneak attack now, master? Oh, you're such a great master. Yes. I mean, obviously you call you that character. That is a fun character. Don't give me a wrong. But I don't know. I mean, I mean to hard on it. I just love it. Rub it to me the wrong way. I love playing support characters. I would have fun with this. I do. Not every single feature here is awesome. I do sincerely like empowered sneak attack. Yeah. It's fine. I can imagine feeling really good, you know, through all of my levels, dealing so much damage when it hits. I will say that's the one feature that you get that strictly just benefits you. So there you go. One change out makes who empowered sneak attack. It shouldn't be reliant on your intelligence modifier. That is the only thing in the subclass that cares about your intelligence so you can't really justify putting a bunch of resources into it. Yeah. Yeah. to Wampus in the chat. I think my biggest gripe as someone who likes playing support characters is I can't help everyone in the party. I can only help cast. Yeah, that's good. That is my thank you, Wampus, for putting into words what my problem is. Like I like support, I like playing support characters. I should like this class, but I don't because you're just, you're just giving massages to the castors, the fighters on his own. But think of like, that's the problem. It's what the only cares about the castors. The castors have at this point all they need is a my tie and a foot stool to be more taken care of by what see then literally everybody else. Okay, that's fair. Can we get someone else to please? Well, on that note, do we want to go to the subclass that's actually for a castor? Yeah. And it's actually good. It is very cool. Yeah. Okay. Page patrons. Okay. I would like to do the pitch for this an old forgotten abandoned God dying, having all of their followers lost faith or lost their lives. And you, Lily Warlock, find this vestige of a God and say, you're going to be my patron. And we're going on adventures together. And through the power of my belief, I will then have power, I guess. So we're going to go on a, we're going to go on a quest to bring you back to life to tell people of your fit. It's just a from critical role with the traveler. She's like, I've made it my mission to tell everybody about the traveler and make the traveler into a God. Cool. It's a cool idea. If I were to play this class, so there's in plane scape in turn of Fortune's wheel when the players go into a spire, they meet a forgotten God that used to be a God of frogs. And he's just sitting there not remembering. He's surrounded by stone toads. That's my patron. We're just going to, is like, have you heard of the God of frogs yet? You used the bad. And he's going to punch you right face. I'll, I'll, I'll hail the great hop hop and a ribbit to you, sir. It is about right. Okay. So you get pet, but your pet is also your boss. Yeah. It's very funny. Yeah. It's also small. So your boss is at most like three feet, nothing. So you just have like this little imp next to you. He's like, dear, the power of Kellogg first. I am the God of life. I'm trying to intimidate them right now. Oh, well, the floor, the shoelace of destiny. All right. Look, if you're trying to intimidate people, you're doing things wrong. Just let your vestige do it for you. It's probably better. Yeah. No, 100%. So, okay. So to go through it real quick, because we're running short in time, you get, you get a vestige companion. It's, it's like a better familiar. It's, it works similar to the other familiar that we've seen before, like you can do a bonus action to give it actions. It does, I just think, called vestige strike that allows it to do either fire damage if it's fiend, necrotic, but it's undead or radiant if it's celestial. And then it has a bunch of different curses that it can cast once a day based on whether you chose undead fiend or celestial. So that's cool. Yeah. And then the best feature, and there you want to talk about vestid spells. Oh, okay. And then you're very excited about it. I am actually really excited about this. This is probably the best feature in the entire on earth, Thurkana. You get to choose your subclass spell list by picking a cleric domain. That's awesome. That's so cool. It's so cool. It's such good flavor. You're gonna pick on them though. It is awesome. That is great. Why are you limiting me to life, light, trickery or war? Just say cleric domains. And then when you publish me, I get that stupid. Yeah, just let us pick any. That's fair. I don't think it breaks anything. I hate it. Let us pick any. I think those are just the four from the players handbook. Now that I think about it. But my point is though, just saying cleric domain. And then when new things come out, it's available to me and I can make a choice. How do you think this makes it? If this makes it to print and my players want to play this subclass, I'm gonna say right here now, I will let you pick whatever domain you want. Awesome. Yeah. With my approval. Obviously. I can already tell some of my players just cackled and be like, "Oh, he doesn't know there's a cleric feat that I can use against him." Hashput the writer on it. At a minimum, your expectation is going to be first party competition. Yeah, yeah, 100%. Otherwise, I'll just push my own. But yeah, I mean, it just spells. It's not features. So I don't think it breaks much to just let them pick whatever domain they want. They're still reliant on their spell slots. It just tells you now. Yeah. It's really cool. Just let them do whatever domain they want. That's my bit. Please watch. So you just let them do whatever domain they want. And I think you have a great subclass here. I think they're probably just trying to limit unforeseen combinations because if they in the future publish a cleric domain that has some spell that's just too powerful when you combine it with Pac Magic, that's probably what they're trying to avoid. I suppose that's true. Fine. But here's what I would say. Do that. And then you add a stipulation that says, or another domain, if DM permiss it. Yeah. I could see that. I want to jump back to the vestige companion real quick and just take a very quick look at its stats. So like Ash said, this follows the same pet rule. So we've seen from a bunch of other subclasses in 2024. One of the things that 2024 pets get is they get to add their proficiency bonus to all of their ability checks and saving throws. Now gentlemen, I want you to take a look at those ability scores. They're pretty good. Well, they're pretty good. No, one strength, ten constitution, but everything else is positive. The big limitation, and like we made jokes about this with the battle Smith to wear like your pet had three intelligence and couldn't talk. So it's entirely possible that just knew more than anyone else on the party and had no way to communicate it. The vestige has fifteen intelligence. So it is more intelligent than basically anyone in the party except the wizard and it can speak any languages that you do. So it is the smartest person in the party. It is quite possibly the most charming person in the party. It might be the most nimble person in the party. It's proficient. So we can have a do everything. Exactly. It's proficient in every skill and every save. Honestly, yeah, would it be very funny to have the God of left shoes be the face of the party? Just saying on your side, give us what we want. Do I tie your shoelaces together? Yeah. The God of the God of mold wine. There you go. Love. You're going to help us darling. I know you are. Oh God, if a sterian became the God of mold wine, canonically forgotten realms, if he was the God of anything, it would be mold wine. Yes. I can see it. Oh, also. So, sorry, another really stupid thing. All of the other pet subclasses, if your pet dies, like you generally have to spend a spell slot to bring them back, which means the most efficient way to heal them is to beat them down to zero hit points until they disappear and then bring them back. This, this, it's even sillier. It doesn't consume a spell slot to bring them back. So it's even more efficient to beat them unconscious and then just wave your hands and they come back after 60 seconds. I mean, if I was the DM, I'd be like, yeah, no, they're not going to appreciate that if you do that. Dear God, excuse my black blasphemy, slap, slap, slap, slap. Everybody give me 60 seconds until God comes back and we'll keep going. Regional, regional, we're going to have to do the ritual you've taken too much damage. I understand my sublicate. Get the rod. Close, you guys don't look the other way. Do it slowly this time, regional. God. It's gone way too far. Family friendly podcast. God, the God of pdsm. There you go. There's, there is at least one of those in every setting I've ever read. Yeah, no, 100%. They're piling around. Maybe we can declare it to also worship this God. It'll be. You know what? So I was, me and me and B were looking through Pinterest for character ideas for game that we're both in and I came across an image that was like, this is brilliant. I need to make a character of this. It's a none with a shotgun. I'm like, yeah, that's pretty awesome. The none of the, maybe they worship the God of lead. Awesome. Beautiful. A bivouled in every home and a cap in every ass. Next 100. Absolutely. Next 100. All right. All right. We have to move on. Level six, vested recovery, vested commanding, now we're gains. It's like they have a once per day bonus action they can do. They now get it once per short rest of the sex. They're pretty nice. The unbed curses a creature. The fiend lets you teleport and swap places and the celestial lets you heal. There needs to be a fake option. There aren't enough. There needs to be more creature types. I agree. Right. 100%. Then level 10, you get R of power, which as a magic action, you can cause the message to manifest in R of 30 feet, 30 foot emanation that originates from the vestige. The RLS number of hours equal to your charisma modifier. Which is none of love. Yeah. Yeah. You, the vestige and your allies gain in the R again resistance to fire, necrotic and radiant damage. It's not a choice. All of them. Yeah. And you have immunity to the Charmed and Frightened conditions. It's crazy. Plus, when you drop to zero hit points while within the RR, you instead go to a number of hit points to equal to your Warlock level plus your charisma modifier and then your vestige disappears. Yeah. So great feature. Yes. And the originates from your vestige, not from you. So you can just send it wherever it's needed. Yeah. So honestly, given the choice, I would really like that second pair of have to be an optional. Like, if my vestige is doing work, I just knock me unconscious. it's fine. That order is more important. I think it should be a choice. It shouldn't be automatically. Yeah. Also, holy cow, five hours this will last. Yeah. It's crazy. Yeah. Honestly, at that point, the quietened ball that I'm doing. I can only do it. We're number. Yeah, you can only do it once per long rest, but realistically, you're only going to need it once per long rest. Yeah. Like, that's enough time for several short rests and every fight you could reasonably fit into a day. Yeah. All right. All right, Capstone feature. You want to take us through it, Tyler? Simblance of life. This one sucks. Once per day, you can cast summon celestial if your vestige is celestial, summon fiend. If it's a fiend, summon undead. If it's undead. When you cast it this way, your vestige turns into the summoned creature. So your vestige loses its stat block and gains the summoned one, which is objectively better in a lot of ways. The spells level is half your level rounded down. So that is maximum spell level effectively. And the spell's duration is reduced to one minute. So for one minute, you get to cast a summoned spell as well as a real spellcaster. In your vestiges. I mean, a ninth level summoned undead is nothing to sneeze at. Yeah, but in only last one minute, it lasts an hour for everyone else. And you still have to maintain concentration. That's her. Yeah. I mean, realistically, you're only going to do this once per combat anyway. It's once per long rest. Oh, yeah. I mean, you're only going to get you save it for like the big bad fight of the day. So I think it's fine. I don't think it's an amazing feature, but I think it's fine. It's essentially like you get a free higher level slot than Warlocks usually get. True. So I'm laughing at your god being like, do the thing. It's like we're not doing anything or another. I don't care. Do the thing. Do it. I want to feel powerful. I want to be more than three feet tall for a full minute. I am a ball girl now. Yeah. All right. Final thoughts. Overall, this UA boy, these need another round. This is this. I was telling Tyler before this before we recorded this may be the single most boring UA they have ever put out. Like wow. It was falling asleep while reading through this. I was just like, yeah. Where is the exciting features? And then I got to vestige Warlock. I was like, oh, there it is. Even the vestige Warlock, I feel like there could be some work. It could get better. It could get better. Yeah, 100%. There's some tweaks that I would make. I would maybe take another pass up their capstone. It's not a bad feature, but it's not the most exciting feature. Yeah. As for the rest of these, I could care less. No, I couldn't care less. So how the race goes like monk. Okay. Whatever. Paladin. It's fine. Magic Steel or the name is terrible. I hate it. Tyrone, I don't think you said the thing that's in the show. Oh, that's right. So in D&D35, there was a class called Spellthief. They made Spellthief a feature for the arcane trickster in 5e. So they couldn't use Spellthief as the name of the subclips. So it would be a better name. Yeah. What is a Spellthief? They're a magic stealer. But here's the thing. You're not even stealing magic. You're really not. You're just going around giving me a tester split massages. Yeah. All you're doing. And I got the reason why the reason why I hate magic stealer is because the concept that they pitch for it is so much cooler than what it actually is. Yeah. And it always. God. No, not always. Sometimes they sometimes they cook, but this this was not a cook. This felt like they were they they were just like, I don't know. We didn't know you ate by tomorrow. What do we come up with? I mean, Johnson's got that really cool vestige thing he's been working on for a while. Okay. Well, that'll do us. We can't just release one subclass though. Can anybody else come up with anything more unique? Paladin, but it's the whole thing revolves around mage slayer. That's a thing, right? Yeah, that could work. Magic toady. Magic, magic toady. Just just a rope that goes around and makes people's lives easier. Okay. And what about you, Frank? A eldritch knight, the monk. Did I do it? All right. I'm going back to sleep. Folks, there you have it. That is our review of the miss big classes. You it has been wonderful to have you and we look forward to seeing you next time. Okay. That is funny. One person. So instead of stealing magic, you're literally just making care of the wizards. You're making the magic. You're doing the same. So, okay. Here's my big fear for this on our Thorkana. All of these subclasses are salvageable. Like the ideas hand work. Sure. But the way wizards of the coast takes feedback on the unearthorconous surveys is they look at the numbers. If something is below 70% garbage heap, never touched again. Yeah. So I don't see these getting above a 70% if I'm being honest. Maybe vestige, but that's about it. I think vestige is going to do really, really well. I think the paladin might do okay. I'm not certain. We'll see. The community's wrong. Look, I like guardian bond. I like in power sneak attack. I don't care much about anything else. You're probably a problem. I'm just too thin. Yeah, it's fair. Probably. Okay. No. Okay. Paladin is the least frustrated of the other three I will give. I will grant you that. All right, folks. It is wonderful to see you. Thanks so much for joining us. Join us on patreon.com/harveygbot. If you have any questions or questions, please leave a comment. I'm going to ask you a question. It helps. It helps. It's like 27 degrees outside right now. I want to die because it's so cold outside. Wait, it's below freezing and aerosona or New Mexico. Oh, I guess it's at night. It does. No, 27 degrees Fahrenheit, which is below freezing. Freezing is 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, that's fair. It is the high desert, so it does get cold. That makes sense. It's really cold. It doesn't usually get this cold. I hate everything I want to die. I thought we were on the out. All right, Chad, we'll see you in a minute. Bye. If I was worried you guys were living, I'd want to kill myself. When I went out to robots yesterday in short, Sennahuddy.

Podcast Summary

Key Points:

  1. The transcription is a casual podcast discussion reviewing new Dungeons & Dragons Unearthed Arcana subclasses, primarily focusing on the "Warrior of the Mystic Arts" Monk.
  2. The hosts criticize the Monk subclass for being a lazy copy of the Eldritch Knight fighter subclass, offering only basic one-third sorcerer spellcasting and uninspired higher-level features.
  3. They suggest the subclass needs unique mechanics, like reflecting spells or incorporating metamagic, to be interesting and distinct, rather than just adding spellcasting.
  4. The conversation also includes off-topic banter about sponsors, personal anecdotes, and brief mentions of other subclasses like the "Vestige Patron Warlock."
