Ukraine Reporter TORCHES Marco Rubio’s Excuses Over Starlink Slowdown (w/ Caolan Robertson)
21m 56s
The transcript blends promotional content from Crown Coins, where real users win large prizes and new customers receive bonuses, with a deep analysis of the ongoing war in Ukraine. It highlights the severe impact of Starlink internet disruptions on Ukrainian military operations and civilian safety, with reports of drone attacks on civilian infrastructure like buses and apartment buildings. Hosts express concern that strategic communication failures—blamed on Elon Musk and political actors—have endangered Ukrainian defenses and morale. The narrative underscores a deepening crisis of trust between Ukraine and Western allies, fueled by past betrayals and current political shifts, especially Trump’s support for Russian leadership. Ukraine is now launching targeted attacks on Russian energy facilities, signaling a major tactical shift. Meanwhile, Russia is accelerating its own satellite internet development, threatening long-term strategic stability. The emotional tone reflects Ukrainian exhaustion and resilience, as civilians grow more prepared despite constant attacks. The discussion concludes with a moral critique of U.S. political leadership, framing Trump’s actions as a betrayal of democratic values and a direct threat to Ukraine’s survival. The content serves both as entertainment and a sobering look at war, technology, and trust in global alliances.

talking about why don't you kewpie the original japanese mayonnaise kewpie hey everybody it's
tim miller from the bulwark it has been a crazy week with regards to news from ukraine i mean
that's like an understatement um and so obviously we're calling in friend of the channel
kailyn robertson has been out on the front lines over the past few weeks uh for his view on what
exactly is happening both geopolitically and uh just on the ground with the ukrainian people so
welcome back thanks so much for having me back and um so i i want to do like all of the political
shenanigans towards the end but just like really quick right off the top for people that that have
missed it or haven't been following the blow by blow uh ukraine lost access or at least had
throttled access uh and so we're going to talk a little bit about that and then we're going to
to their Starlink internet starting at the back half of this past week.
There's been accusations back and forth whether Elon did that, whether the U.S. did that.
Zelensky, I was just watching him on Meet the Press, said that he feels betrayed by Trump over this.
And he hopes that Trump is still an ally to Ukraine.
Rubio last night was kind of trying to parse this and the different types of internet.
But the practical effect of all this is that the Ukraine military has lost access to key satellite internet technology that allows it to defend itself.
I mean, that's basically the gist of this, Kaelin.
Yeah, totally. And Starlink, as well, for context, is not just a part of the front line here.
It is the front line. It's the main mode of communications right now.
And that's how all the soldiers all across the front that I've been spending time with in the last few weeks can communicate with each other.
Command is how everything is launched.
It's how everything is done here.
It's all open source information as well.
So, you know, the United States knows this as well.
Elon knows this.
This is a critical part of keeping everyone alive, keeping Ukraine functioning.
And a couple of days ago, I was actually on the road.
I was somewhere between Kharkiv and the north of Ukraine.
And I started getting messages from the commanders that we had interviewed saying, are you noticing this?
Have you any of your contacts in politics?
Do you know what's going on?
And it looked like the speed had slowed down for these Starlinks to operate.
And no one knew why, right?
Elon said it was Trump.
Trump said it was Elon.
You know, everyone was passing this hot potato because no one wanted to take responsibility.
And then it's inexplicably went back up again.
Apparently now it's going to be switched off again.
So it's like a constant back and forth.
And no one in Ukraine seems to understand what is actually going on from the United States and the people that are actually hosting these networks, hosting this stuff.
And it's caused a massive headache.
It's also caused a lot of questions right now as well, which is if you buy a communication.
System from an organization or a country and it suddenly gets switched off, then it can't be very reliable for, you know, for the future as well.
And people should be looking at that, you know, with all of Elon's products right now as well.
And all of the products associated with all this right now, because it's all while I'm going to switch it off whenever you like.
But it should pull into question for future countries that want to look at things like this for defense.
So it's caused an absolute nightmare all across the front line.
And people are very, very nervous because Russia are developing their own version of Starlink very quickly.
Right now, I know I always talk about Russia being on the back foot in a lot of ways, but they are investing heavily in it.
And that will come online at some point soon.
I spoke to Fedorov, who was the former defense minister about this just a few months ago, and he said they're working on it fast.
And Europe still doesn't have its stuff together.
Europe has not got an alternative either.
Right. So it's pretty much critical right now.
And it's how it's why so much of this is so charged around this one specific thing.
And Elon's been turning us off and on for a long time.
In 2022, Ukraine had a strategy to take out.
A lot of the shadow fleet, Russia's warships in the Black Sea here that are firing missiles every single day into Ukraine.
And hours before Ukraine launched a targeted assault to take these things out, Elon heard about it and shut the whole thing off.
He heroically saves Russia's shadow fleet.
Right. Totally ridiculous at the 11th hour.
So he's been doing this.
He's been doing this for a long time.
But this seems to be the most egregious.
And now he's denying it because he knows that people will be so.
Outraged, a huge number of Americans support Ukraine about 56 percent, and they would be absolutely disgusted of what he's doing right now.
So he doesn't even want to acknowledge it.
He's just saying, oh, I have nothing to do this.
I've never heard of Starlink.
I don't know what it is. What could it possibly be?
You know, it's a totally ridiculous.
So when you're talking to the military folks, I mean, you said you have the map right there.
You showed me the map of where you're traveling.
Are you allowed to do this?
It's not. Yeah, well, now it's over.
Yeah. So you see the black line there kind of where he traveled along the.
Along the front lines, so you're talking to military leaders there like what like what's the practical impact of this?
I know you're saying Rubio is kind of trying to make it seem like, oh, losing Starshield just means they're not going to be able to do offensive attacks deep into Russia.
But I'm seeing a bunch of different reports.
It's hard to kind of parse that like that loss of access meant that they weren't able to defend themselves.
And there were like Ukrainian civilians that died because of this.
What are kind of the military folks saying is the impact?
And what's the impact of this?
there was one and then um you know once he's like I don't know what he's talking about and then the
Russians started attacking energy infrastructure like we were seeing reports of like huge blackouts
in in Kyiv uh like what is you know what's been the impact of of all those attacks and like what
are people going through when it comes to the attacks on energy infrastructure well what has
happened is Putin amplified by Trump has said that he wants some sort of energy ceasefire while 75
times in the last few days hitting energy targets here in Ukraine I've had blackouts in the last few
hours because of this as well early hours of this morning they hit another power station here in
Kyiv constantly every single day energy stations have been hit at an unprecedented level all across
this country so people can freeze during the winter right the temperature is dropping every
single day to try and force Ukraine to capitulate while the exact same time Russia are putting out
their usual misinformation saying that they want some sort of peace right they want peace talks
they do that to delay
support for Ukraine and they do that to make it seem like they're the reasonable ones but
all that has happened is Russia have intensified their attacks and this has happened every winter
but this year it's actually happened sooner this is just normally doesn't begin until like closer
to Christmas but you know Russia really really really are gearing up for this right now um and
they're trying to get um and Ukraine are finally for the first time fighting back right Ukraine
are now firing missiles and drones homemade in this country into energy targets in Russia because
energy is the
Russian economy it's how they pay their soldiers that's what you do in military and now Putin is
upset about that and he's trying to get Trump to stop it because they're weak right now I mean that
shows that Russia isn't in a point of strength when Putin has to beg his best friend Donald Trump
to get Ukraine to stop firing missiles into his country because he can't stop it himself and it's
totally pathetic and Trump is being played in all of this but energy is at the heart of it but
really in the bigger picture nothing has really changed Russia is still trying to force Ukraine to
capitulate Russia is still trying to destroy Ukraine and they're trying to pretend that they're
not doing it and they're using Trump as a pawn in all of it this is Troy millions from earn your

only prohibited by law 18 plus terms and conditions apply it's um you know it's wild what is the
civilian kind of safety environment now and it seems like there have been reports of some uptick
in and attacks on you know on civilians obviously Russia's been attacking you know civilian targets
this whole time but um it seems like is that accurate that the last week we've seen somewhat
of an uptick in that well 33 people were killed in Kramatorsk which is a city I was in just a few
years in the East here they're all on a bus right and Russians are I think intensifying its targets
against civilians because they are people who are very easily identified as civilians right in a
city called herson as well in the south of Ukraine more buses more civilians are being hit every
single day and they're very obviously civilians they're on the buses in Ukraine are quite
distinctive they're bright yellow right they don't look like military vehicles and the apartment
building that I first moved into in Odessa we literally did a show from that apartment building
today was destroyed by a drone there's a video of it on on Twitter now so this is the actual apartment
building that you were in yeah the same building that we've done these broadcasts from that I first
moved to when I moved to Odessa took a direct hit on the top floor which is literally the floor that
I lived on and that is identified as a clear apartment building so I posted a tweet about it
about an hour ago so this is um intensifying constantly Odessa is a city that's being hit
unprecedented levels right now in all these high rises
and just a month ago I was in Odessa and the apartment building literally right in front of
the one I was in was hit with a banderol missile as well so this is just like constant here and
it's to terrify people so peeps because Putin wants Ukraine to give up it's very simple as
that he can't win on the front lines so he's got to try and convince people to give up on the war
in the city well let's ask I feel like that I asked I feel like I asked you about this every
couple months but um you know I mean you're there I'm not um how is like the mood um you know at the
like the mood um you know at this point and it does feel like there is you know the abandonment
from the United States and you know these attacks you've been talking about on civilians from Russia
you have to imagine as an impact and like I said I was just watching Zelensky and who the hell knows
if he just didn't sleep last night or whatever but he was he was seeming a little more weathered than
usual I how are people feeling well people are tired because this is the fifth winter that they've
had to deal with this now but
really Ukraine and I spoke to people I speak to people about this every single day civilians my
friends how they're feeling all the time the reaction to what's going on politically right
now Ukrainians have been through this before in 1991 they were betrayed in the Budapest memorandum
as well right Democratic World promised them security of their borders and it never happened
in 2014 it didn't happen in 2022 it didn't happen and now Trump is doing the exact same thing so
Ukrainians are used to this they've been through this before they've been betrayed endlessly by
the outside world so this is just another version of that
um and actually the um the you know the feeling on the ground here is is not that different to to
how it's been in previous years and every single winter that goes by Ukrainians get more and more
prepared at home they get more energy you know they get more backup systems they can wear gloves
they they sort of can become they become quite resilient to a lot of these attacks but what's
different this year is Ukraine are now going to give Russians the same treatment that they've
been having every single year this will be the first winter that Russians experience something
they've been doing to Ukraine right it's much colder in Russia as well yeah property who I interviewed
who's in charge of all these strikes a few months ago literally directly told me that he said that
Russia are going to experience this for their first winter ever that's what's different so
Ukrainians are obviously they're exhausted by all this as war has gone on for far too long but
they're also pretty aware that at least the people launching the missiles might feel just a fraction
of what they felt might try and slow this down because of it so it's kind of changed in that
sense as well yeah
um how's your mother doing I'm worried about your mother she getting she getting sleep
I I think so I try not to tell her about these trips because uh it's I mean she finds out on
social media anyway because videos go everywhere but I just I don't I normally just say I'm going
on a vacation for a few weeks and then you'll see it later so but yeah well let me know if
she needs a cookie bouquet or something you know um because man I you know her her it's
you've got to feel some danger right I mean it's got to be a little worrying
yeah I guess so I think it's um I think she came here for my wedding last year into cave and didn't
quite understand what I was doing in Ukraine and then when she got off the train she was like okay
I understand it she realized how beautiful this country is the fight that's here the spirit that's
here and just realized why I fell in love with Ukraine and even though now she's still pretty
nervous she's also like I understand you know a little bit more I don't know I don't know she's
I understand you know all of it like why you're there so but it's still very difficult I think
yeah um all right is there anything I haven't asked you about any kind of developments that
you're seeing or hearing or noticing that that isn't kind of getting into American media
I mean I guess just I mean one conversation I had with someone today about this was kind
of how it relates to the United States as well which is I was talking to a Ukrainian
friend on if she feels betrayed or not by what's happened with this diesel deal and she shrugged
hers like I just mentioned and she said well no we've been through this before but it's actually
the American people that have been betrayed the most by this the American people that overwhelmingly
support Ukraine actually the American people that overwhelmingly support democracy and freedom who
have now had their president side with a fascist and also you know if you look at the video of
Trump berating Zelensky in the Oval Office just last year there's a bust in the background right
above the fireplace of Winston Churchill and you probably missed this but there's a lot of drama
over the Churchill bust you know a lot of like media cycles here about where Obama put
the Churchill bust versus where Trump put the Churchill bust and it's like you know the bust
is not quite as important as the behavior yeah of course of course but I mean I think Trump put that
there because you know he likes the idea of Churchill he likes this kind of wartime leaders
but Churchill literally fought against the very thing that Trump is now siding with he defeated
he fought against fascism in Europe now fascism's back is just speaking Russian instead of German and
what Trump is now supporting and inviting back into the Oval Office and picking up the phone to
Moscow instead of Berlin and London and it's siding with tyranny and everything that's the opposite of
American values and that's what a lot of people in Ukraine were shocked by the most not just as
material to them but like how can this happen to the American people um yeah it's a betrayal of our
own values for sure and it's shameful and hopefully we'll have a new Congress that will uh you know
have some balls and force them to do something
different uh come next come next year but uh boy it's rough in the meantime all right well if there
