Hi, I'm Tara Oaks, in Liverpool. And I'm Christopher Walgesper, in Chicago. It's Monday, September 28th, today. The UK releases five men suspected of a terrorist plot near a military base. Republicans break with Trump over data centers as voters feel the squeeze on their energy bills. SpaceX's Starship rocket reaches orbit for the first time ever. And Spain's housing crisis boils over. Iran is denying involvement in a suspected terrorist plot to attack a British airbase. R.A.F. Fairford houses U.S. bombers that have been flying missions to strike Iranian missile sites during the war. Police say that the five men arrested are British nationals from London in their early 20s. The men have been released on bail, although they remain under investigation. Iran's embassy in London has said in a statement that it "categorically rejects and strongly condemns the recent unfounded and malicious speculations." In July, Iran's revolutionary guards said the base was a legitimate target. U.S. President Donald Trump says the five men arrested near the airbase in England were looking to do, quote, "big damage" and "been under investigation" by both British and American authorities. An Iran-linked motive is considered the most likely, although investigators are also looking at a possible Russian operation. On the diplomatic front, President Trump says he expects U.S. negotiators to talk to Iran this week, despite rejecting Iran's latest peace proposal. Iran says any move to reopen the Strait of Hormuz depends on its conditions being met. SpaceX's Starship rocket has reached orbit for the first time. It's a major milestone for the company, and despite losing one engine mid-flight, the uncrewed next-generation rocket launched from Texas and successfully deployed 26 new Star-link satellites before beginning a planned 10-hour orbital mission. Reaching orbit has been long delayed for Starship, Elon Musk initially predicted it would happen back in 2022. The success of the Starship rocket is central to Star-link, as well as NASA's Artemis Moon program. Musk says he expects Starship to go into routine operation, deploying more Star-link satellites late this year. Senate Republicans are bringing lawmakers back to Washington this week for a vote on rising and electricity costs from data centers. The move comes as Republicans are racing to get something done on affordability ahead of the midterms, as voters struggle with inflation stoked by the war with Iran. It's also a break with Trump, who strongly backs data center development. Business and Justice Editor Michael Lehmont says it's the latest sign that Republicans are distancing themselves from Trump, whose approval rating has just hit a record low. So what we're seeing is the Republicans are just hitting the panic button, and you know, you're seeing this in a lot of different ways. So the latest example of that is this week, the Senate is actually staying in session, something it rarely does, to try to pass a piece of legislation called the Rate-Pair Protection Act. And that's to do something about electricity rates in places that have had significant data center buildouts. So data centers, very unpopular in America, they're like less popular than nuclear power right now. And the Republicans want to be able to go back to their districts and say they tried to do something about it. And specifically, this is about one Senator John Husted in Ohio. Data centers have been a huge issue in Ohio. And honestly, Husted has been on the difficult end of that because his opponent shared brown has been really hitting him for his supportive data centers in the past. So he wants to be able to go back to Ohio and like finish out the month, this last month of the campaign and say I tried to do something about electricity rates. Michael says one way to gauge how worried the party is is to follow the money. So the money is flowing into states in a huge way that Republicans should not have to defend at all. So money is flowing into Iowa, into Kansas, into Nebraska to shore up candidates there. These are deep red. This is the farm belt. Republicans should not have to spend any money there. States where they should be doing extremely well or they shouldn't have to worry. They're having to spend money there. The good news is Republican party has tons of money. They've outraged Democrats by a huge margin. So there's tons of money to go around, but it just remains to be seen if the money will be enough to save them. We turn to markets now and for a look at what's on the radar this week, we're joined by Mike Dolan, host of our sister podcast Morning Bed. Good morning. It's going to be another busy week and noisy week for bond markets which are remain on edge after some significant climbs and borrowing rates right through last week. We've got everything from 5 years to 30 years now above 5% and mostly at that long end, the highest borrowing rates since before the bank in crash in 2007, 2008. So it is very nervous out there. The two big events of the week probably in that regard are the payrolls, the September employment report on Friday and we also have the end of the quarter come Wednesday which can create some erratic trading as well as investors reposition their portfolios. Thanks Mike, you can find Morning Bed wherever you get your podcasts. Turning to Spain, where housing crisis protestors have been camping out in a square in Madrid. On the weekend, thousands march through the city to demand political action to stop evictions and alleviate the housing crisis. Chinese spontaneously set up tents afterwards and sent a plan to stay until Tuesday. The eviction of 87-year-old Marie Carmen Abasco on September 23 became a turning point on the issue. She was seen being removed on a stretcher from the building where she had lived for 7 decades before being driven away in an ambulance. The case highlights mounting pressure on long-term tenants where soaring rents, gentrification and a shortage of affordable housing have fueled social and political tensions. In India, heavy rain and storms have triggered floods and landslides killing scores of people. India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh recorded 66.5mm of rain over the weekend compared to the usual 7.6 for the period. More than a dozen people have also died over the border in Nepal. Authorities dare a warning that more flash floods are possible. The high risk areas do not currently include the areas hit by last month's deadly floods. For Europe this year, extreme weather has come in the form of record-breaking heat, which is extending into the seeds. It seems to have just recorded their hottest summer since reliable satellite recordings began more than four decades ago. And that heat is changing what lives beneath the surface. Of the coast of England, marine biologist Katie Smith says sea temperatures near Plymouth have been far from normal. So if you think normally on average in Plymouth Sam what we are right now, we should be sitting around 16.5 degrees, possibly 17 degrees, but we're actually sitting much near 20 degrees and this will be going on for several months now. That's about 68 degrees Fahrenheit, roughly 6 degrees warmer than usual. And those warmer waters are already changing what fishermen are pulling from the sea. Fish merchant Ian Perks has been watching the change firsthand. We're seeing more octopus for sure. The Mediterranean octopus, the double sucker, I've come here in big numbers. Good for the selling side, not good for the lobster.
the crab skull of industry as that's the octopus feed. We're also seeing a massive increase in the blue fin tuna which we've not seen here for 60 years. And scientists warn this may be a glimpse of what's ahead. In Northern Spain, around 95% of a large kelp forests along the Asturias coast have already disappeared. Researchers are now trying to replant them, even as a warm of waters to help drive that decline assist. Meet new grippy setting mist from Mabelie, New York.
