And that my friends was homage to Michael Jackson. That was alien ant farm doing their cover of smooth criminal. So Amber, I'm going to talk about the Michael movie here for just a brief second. And but what I wanna know, you grew up in Canada. - I did. - And you're a few years younger than me by just a couple. - Correct. - Years, what was that scene like in Canada when off the wall in Thriller and all those iconic Michael Jackson songs, not from the Jackson Five, but Michael Jackson himself. 'Cause my experience out here on the West Coast, and I'll talk about it in a minute, but tell me what that was like for you and the Kanax. - You could not get away from the Michael Jackson Thriller record. It was on the radio, nonstop posters, just craziness. Michael Jackson, Mania, was at an all time high when that record came out. - Wow, now what's interesting is that before Billie Jean, a lot of people will have a hard time with this. But if you go back to the MTV vaults, they did not play African American artists. - I know. - That much on MTV was until they really dove into your MTV wraps where that really blew up for them. But the artist that broke that seal for MTV was Michael Jackson. - Michael Jackson, I think another artist would have probably been a run DMC. - Run DMC? - They had Aerosmith. And so there was a good crossover there. - Right, right. - That was a huge thing for MTV. - Yeah. Now, one of the things about this movie that stood out to me, some people will say it's a revisionist movie, which you know what, they have a point because the movie ends at a certain point. It doesn't capture the craziness that was the last ten years of his life. But for those who were true Michael Jackson fans, or the people that just really liked his music, this movie is for you. The way that they did the live music scenes, unbelievable, Jafar Jackson, who I think is a nephew of Michael's, played him. - Oh my god. - Oh my god. - Oh my god, that guy was so good. - I want to see it. - You need to see it because just from that perspective, such a good movie. Again, some people are not going to be happy because there are a lot of things left out, but what wasn't left out is something for me, helped me after I left that movie, have a better understanding of what that poor kid went through. And they depicted him of what life was like as a child. - Can you tell me, Imagine and crap. That was that was horrific. That was such a horrific childhood. He never had a childhood. No, I agree. He didn't really have a chance in that way. But in music, he was able to express himself so clearly that at least he had that. All I can say is I'll be writing a review about the movie. It'll be up sometime this week at osm music news.com. You'll find it there. But, but I will say this. It gave me a new appreciation for his music. It really did. I said, you know, I got to play two different types of songs of Michael show. So we played Alien Ant-Farm who did a covers move criminal. We did. Don't stop till you get enough. The big, big song is beat it. Billy Jean. One song. All right, Lisa London, I know. He's in the next room. She's got Jose Maldonado in there. They're talking about some. I don't know what. But I'm going to play a song that wasn't as big as those. But to me, it shows his range. And it was a big deal when it came out, right? Lots of rumors around this song. The song is crazy. It's called She's Out of My Life. Everyone thinks, right? What did you, who did you think he was writing the same thing? I said it was either about Diana Ross or Brook Shields. Right. And when I was in high school, that was the big thing. It's about Brook Shields, about Brook Shields, right? And it turns out it wasn't. And it's a, it's a song that was written by a singer song right by the name of Tom Baylor. And the song in itself is about his relationship, Tom Baylor's relationship, right? With not Brook Shields, but with Karen Carpenter. But Karen Carpenter is such a talent. She had a sad life, unfortunately, but she was an amazing person, an amazing drummer, a beautiful voice. Wow. And I love that he wrote the song about her. Me too. I love the Carpenter's top of the world. Still one of my favorites of all time. They lived in Downey. You know, the Carpenter DS. No, I know where the house is. Oh, wow. We used to go by there. The time when we were teenagers don't have to worry. All right. Here we go. One last one for Michael. And then we get back to regular programming. All right. She's out of my life at StinN Radio. It's Kayaks of Fembley the London. You're coming up next. Here we go. [Music] She's out of my life. I love Laguna Beach It's just so cool. I like the drive and everything And then it doesn't hurt that you're a surfer a lifeguard and a water boy I've never been a surfer I boogie board mostly But you know what I do most of the time This is what not a whole lot of people do this in Southern California For those of you listening Outside of Southern California People either go to the beach to just lay out on the sand Or they surf because they're dedicated to that I'm one of those people that actually go swimming Like I actually swim for like You know For like a good 20 minutes just in the water Like alongside the dolphins and the sharks and everything Wow, so wait, do you go out and back or across? I go out I go out a little bit and then I swim parallel to the shore Oh wow So then when you come out you're like a mile down Maybe not a mile But you know a few a few lifeguard towers past And then then I'll just then I'll jump out of the water And run back to where I was and yeah That so you don't see a lot of people doing that Mostly you see people just laying out on the sand Or the dedicated surfers who are there at frickin 530 in the morning Yeah, exactly and so you were a lifeguard You've just retired Now how are you spending your days? I mean aside from all of the music stuff We're gonna get to the music stuff in a second I wanna talk about all this you know your beach pod Let's hear about it Yes, for 37 years I was employed with the County of Los Angeles As a lifeguard and I I Gave my I retired so in March of this year It's been it's been fantastic I Well I won't get into too much of the detail on it But a lot of these safety jobs like fire department Firefighters you know police officers Some teachers used to get this You know these these pensions when when the pensions mature you you basically get You get taken care of the rest of your for the rest of your life So you don't really have to worry about You know you're still gonna get paid to come into work The only thing is you don't have to come into work anymore Dang I want what he's having Yeah, I mean that's that's kind of a thing of a bygone era You don't see a lot of you don't see a lot of but you know like people like well I'm sure your parents and my parents you know that they got those with just their factory jobs You know they got true true but my my dad ran the factory So he's still working in his late 80s because he doesn't know what else to do with himself He goes crazy even on the weekends when he's home like oh forget about it He has to work so yeah, there's he's never gonna stop Well, let me tell you because everyone asks you so what's it like I will tell you exactly what it's like And this this this sink in probably like the first week that I was off It's like winning the lottery but instead of money You won free time And now you have more than you know what to do with and just like money It's a lot more fun when you share it with other people so having the free time to share it with other people has been The best and also now it gives you more time to go more full on and your music current You've always been full on in sweet and tender hulakins which I want to talk about right now because you do have a show coming up So tell me a little bit about that right now Saturday night May 2nd we are going to be at the observatory north park We are celebrating Bats Day Bats Day is a phenomenon that's taken and that's kind of taken hold in Orange County for Papa, it's about the. last 10 or 15 years. This is when all of the Goths descend upon a very well-known amusement park in Anaheim. But now they they've expanded beyond that amusement park and take over all of Orange County and do that. So in keeping with that, the observatory in Santana has decided, hey, let's bring the Batstay crowd over to us. They've got us do an attribute to Morrissey in the Smiths, Sweden Center, Hooligans, and we have our very special guests, our good friends, the Aqua Bats. No way, we love the Aqua Bats. There's more, by the way. Let's hear it. Okay, wait, wait, can I just also stop you there and say, I love that you knew that you had to explain what Batstay was to me because you knew there's no inhale. I was going to know what that was. I love that. So okay, go on. Oh, yeah, it's it's it's taken off. It's taken off. It's so much even outside of the amusement park as well. But the Aqua Bats are going to do an entire set of songs by the cure. Oh, that's interesting. So in their own style, you know, people who know the Aqua Bats are kind of a they're kind of a silly scob band with like fun costumes and everything like that. But you know, they're keeping their costumes only they're going to modify them just a little bit as they're going to do a tribute to the cure. Oh, okay. So now that it's Batstay, are you going to have any special Morrissey outfit that will honor Batstay? No, we're letting the Aqua Bats handle all that stuff. But yeah, okay. So you're going to just be like Mexican Morrissey. Yeah, pretty much the same kind of show that you that you typically see. Now, I will I will tell you that June marks the 40th anniversary of the Smith's album, The Queen is Dead, which is the album that pretty much everyone sort of points to as the quintessential Smith's album. That being said, you can expect to hear quite a few songs off of the album, The Queen is Dead. Fantastic. And okay, now I think I've asked you this before the last time you came in, but I want to reask have any of the actual Smith's come to any of your shows? Yes, over the years, over the years, just about every just about every former member of the Smith's has come to see us. Morrissey has seen us a couple of times. Legend has it that he did come to one show at the glass house in Pomona. We still don't have proof of that. We do have proof that he has seen a couple of concerts that people have bootlegged and showed him in the past. So Morrissey himself mentioned to me many, many years ago that that he had seen one of our shows. That's amazing. Okay. And then okay, so now aside from sweet and tender hologens, you are also doing Oingo Boingo former members and you are the new lead singer. Well, not new, but I am the singer of Oingo Boingo former members and the yeah, that that my first show was with them last December. I've been gigging with them ever since early early early early early last year they contacted me. And you know, we I had to keep it under wraps. Couldn't tell anybody. Couldn't even tell you and I know I was not happy about that. Come on, dude, man, you know, we go back to our teens. I know. And so no, I had to keep it, I had to keep it to myself. But that very first rehearsal happened in July of last year. So we're coming up on almost a year that I've been rehearsing with them, recording with them as well. And yeah, now we've got I'm looking at 18 shows just this year alone with with Oingo Boingo former members. Do you ever like stand up on stage and forget that you're not more see in that you're Danny? Like does that ever happen? I don't have to I don't have to worry about that at all. No, but you know, the the the cool thing for me is that, you know, I grew up a K-Rock kid and you know, I went to I went to see Oingo Boingo every Halloween. I never I never missed to show it all. In fact, the very first show I ever saw the the ever for the the first ever Oingo Boingo show that I saw I was I was 17 years old and I was with 19 of my friends from my high school swim team at the Greek theater. And as it so happens August 30th, I will be on stage with Oingo, Boingo former members at the Greek theater. Oh my god. That's amazing. Okay, wait, can I just also add anyone who's going to try and hit Jose up for tickets? I already did, but there's 10 members and each member only gets two tickets and he's not given his wife's ticket to me. Yeah. Well, you know, the the funny thing too is that I was thinking about when I when I thought about, you know, having seen them at the Greek theater, I can remember just thinking 17 years old like I remember, you know, we're seated up way up there and I'm like, wow, it would be so cool to have front row seats. And now, I have even better than front row seats and backstage passes too. Dude. Okay, wait, can you do me this favor at the show? Could you have somebody go up to a kid who's sitting in the very last row and bring him up to the front row? Oh my goodness. Why wouldn't that be, uh, would that be special? Find find the seat where I was sitting. Yes. Yes. Yes. I should find the seat where I was sitting when when I went and saw Oingo Boingo for the first time. Oh, that's so cool. Got to do it. So that is the lost 80s festival happening. August 30th, uh, we will be there along with big country missing persons, men without hats, drama, Rama will be there and many, many other great, great 80s bands. So that's the lost 80s festival at the Greek theater on August 30th. Dang. And I can't get tickets from Jose. I'm gonna have to go buy them. It's okay. I will do it for you, my friend. A lot could always just buy the tickets for you. No, no, no, no, I'm gonna go support you full on full on support. Okay, so all right, back to sweet and tender hooligans. Um, I want to let's talk about that gig one more time so we can get people down there because it's coming up. And then is there anything else that you have any recordings or anything planned with sweet and tender hooligans? Saturday night that's, once again, that's May 2nd at the, uh, at the observatory in Santa Ana, along with the aquabats doing their tribute to the cure. Uh, we'll San Diego. We will see you in June. And that specific show at the also named observatory in North Park. That is happening June 5th. We will be doing an entire set all of the Queen is dead for that show. So San Diego, we will see you on June 5th. Okay, so here's what we're gonna do. We are gonna now play a song from sweet and tender hooligans that's sung in Spanish, which I love. And then we're gonna follow it with one of your Uncle Boingo former members songs that you are featuring on. So how about we do that? Oh fantastic. Hey, thanks for having me. Uh, always a pleasure to come down to Laguna Beach and see you guys. And thank you Jose. All right, so Jimmy, let's hear it. This is, there's a light that never goes out sung in Spanish from this sweet and tender hooligans with Jose, with his golden vocals on lead. Here we go on the TN Radio KXFM.
