Turtleneck & Chain Part 4: Trouble on Dookie Island
59m 0s
The podcast celebrates the absurd and humorous song "Trouble on Ducky Island" as a deeply personal and nostalgic piece of cultural memory. Though the lyrics use the surreal term "dookies" to describe bodily accidents, the group reframes it as a metaphor for embarrassment, panic, and the chaotic energy of youth—never literally taking it as actual feces. The song’s origins trace to a fictional movie concept inspired by a 1990s voiceover session by Howard Parker, who recorded the phrase "Trouble on Ducky Island" over 12 takes, each with a slight variation, showcasing its cultural staying power. The hosts explore connections to childhood memories, including Wu Tang Clan music, film references like *Only Built for Cuban Links*, and the influence of *Bill & Ted* and *Wayne’s World*. They also discuss the creative process behind the track, including the use of digital scratching and vocal layering, and highlight the importance of shared humor and inside jokes. The episode blends music, nostalgia, and playful absurdity, ultimately celebrating how a simple, silly song can become a symbol of deep personal and cultural connection. The hosts also briefly reference a lesser-known musical sketch involving *Falco* and *Versa-Trail* from *The Never-Ending Story*, adding another layer of childhood nostalgia. Throughout, the tone remains light, self-deprecating, and full of mutual admiration, reinforcing the podcast’s identity as a community built on humor, shared experience, and creative exploration.

What are we talking about? - It is in the proverbial tittis. - Did you notice your arms thing? - Yeah. What are we talking about today, guys? You know what I mean? - Right. - Right, right. - Yours having any bathroom issues? - Yours is not mine. - Yours. - I didn't expect you to say that. (laughing) - For the inspo. - You know, we've all had embarrassing moments and I don't want to be single now. - I mean, the beat was, let's start at the beginning. We heard this beat and we were like, oh God. Like as, let's be real. Backpack, rap enthusiasts and Wu Tang heads and all things ghost and ray. - Loveurs. - Let's say. - There's a lot of them out there. - Now is this a B-sides beat? - It is B-sides, yes. - I feel like when we heard it, we were like, we knew there was going to be a sample and it was going to be expensive and we were like, we don't care. This is what we want to rap on. Sorry, this is what we want to rap on. - Thank you. - Mm-hmm. Usually we wait, but I'm going to just play the beginning so people can remember what kind of beat it is. 'Cause it's, it's by B-sides and it's kind of like a just blaze style sample heavy beat. - Mm-hmm. (upbeat music) - Yeah, as soon as. (upbeat music) - Okay, so let's start with great beat and then we have a Scarface sample at the beginning. You may have noticed, Norm. I did notice and that came about Telemandy. - How? - Well, that's our good friend Michael Bolton. (laughing) And the reason is we had already made the Jack Sparrow song with him at this point. - Yeah. - And we haven't, have we talked about Jack Sparrow yet? Did we do the whole episode? - No, no, 'cause the video's still coming. But, okay, so we'll talk about that more later, but basically through the process of working with Michael Bolton on Jack Sparrow and through our rewriting process, we learned he had a Scarface impression. (laughing) And so once we knew that, it was kinda just kismet 'cause we were like, these kinds of songs always start with a Scarface sample. And I would say there's gotta be at least 10 songs in this genre of hip hop that start with a Scarface sample or end with a Scarface sample. So, we had the bright idea to get him to reproduce the lines from Scarface and use it on the album. So, it's his second appearance on the album. - Well, to be fair though, we did look up how much a Scarface sample would cost. And it was $10,000 for each sample. So, it would have been $20,000 for the two lines. And then we asked Michael Bolton, if he would do it for Franny, he said yes. - Just to hear how good it is, here's criminology from the Rake One album from '95, only built for Cuban links. The classic is a big album. I might add a featuring ghost face, but just hear some Scarface. - It told you a long time ago. (funky music) - Who the fuck do you think you go for? (funky music) (funky music) - What? (funky music) (funky music) (funky music) - Oh, so sick. - God damn, that beat is so fucking raw. So, hell, it's unbelievable. - This was a big influence for all of us when this album came out. Every song in this album is sick. Rainy Day is being one of my favorite of all time. - I feel like only built for Cuban links, maybe my favorite Wu Tang album of all time? Is that true? I'm asking myself, I'm asking my brain right now. Is that true? - It's definitely top five, almost certainly top three, and then possibly number one. - You have to put 36 chambers, that number one just for being the one. - Yeah. - I mean, it depends what your criteria are. Criterium is, that's correct. Like, is it like, front to back every song you love and feel like is perfect?
or is it like your favorite songs are on that album you know yeah okay I'll think about that it has so many fucking heaters and the and the duo between the two of them the bag of fourth is so great and I actually read Rayquan's book and it's a fucking great read although it gets into the weeds on like the inner dynamics of Wu Tang and maybe you don't actually read that because there's some sad stuff about like oh really under that but I watched the doc all the stuff about them you got to read the book I'm a book I but all the stuff with them going down I don't know if they were in Barbados or late St. Lucia or like but they went down and like the two of them hung out and made this album in the way that you're like oh they're such good buddies and the fact that they had beef originally because they're from different parts in New York and then became ultra homies is it's just great it really made me happy to read that stuff the just like us guys just like us when this album came out I just want to point to how much of a like the van diagram of what we would like at that time this is 1995 it starts and the music here this is the very beginning of only built for Cuban links I was sitting yo son check the flashes son yo baby check it man I got a new connect son for real man fuck all that that background music is the score from the John Wu film the killer that's right and so like we I think we talked about how which you had a poster of Keith yeah I had the main movie poster I think it's still having in my garage but like we would go on Wednesdays I wish I had the Oppenheimer soundtrack behind me though right now while I was saying this yeah University this is pretty dramatic too but the we would on Wednesdays at the university theater which I don't think exists any more in Berkeley that was a huge thousand seat theater but still played you know where every day it's a different movie kind of like the new Beverly or some Wednesday was Hong Kong cinema but it was like wall Hong Kong cinema was happening yeah it was like hard boiled came out 92 and we were probably watching it in 92 in that theater so we were just being introduced to all the crazy Hong Kong stuff and I had no idea who you know we were learning who liked jetley and chai and fat were and tone of the young and as it was happening they'd played Wang Car why they played all but the killer and specifically hard boiled were two of our favorites yeah but then for also you know Wu Tang had only had two other albums right there's just there was only the 36 Chambers and then maybe method man had come out and had jizzas come out when this one came out it was a bit of predated jizz I'd have to look it up it was really early in their run so it was so exciting when this album was coming out and the fact that then it started by combining our interests I was like this is everything put together I believe the one you were calling out you on rainy days also I'm just gonna hit the beginning I think it starts with the killer more right with dial from yeah from the dubbed phs yeah also like comic books yeah it's in the background again right she's now singing to the killer I'll just say it sounds a little bit like Maya doing a bit yes you're saying beautifully just now I think there's dialogue from the killer all over on other songs too just keep playing it it's so good you just want to do me oh my god did she just okay well we're gonna get bonked by UMG for our song so we might as well get bonked by all of them you know what I mean we're gonna get bonked yorm there it is that's what yorm was waiting for all right so that's the good version now that you understand that we were into booting a lot that brings us to hearing this beat and going how might we do that well specifically also when Rayquan and Ghostface would get together which they often did in their kind of back and forth style yes which they didn't invent but they definitely had their own version of that was kind of unmistakable and honestly a lot of Rayquan's style in particular and Ghostface really it's really is you can see in early days videos of when we made Stork Patrol we were very inspired by yeah very poetic finding crazy words for things like just Stork Patrol's basically ice cream yes yes yeah and and wisdom body here there's lines right from it wow what's your rock and Pro now enough to make a hard rock smell you can't strike out tell me what when's Victoria's secret coming Tomy Hill down at Clay Point show me some love honey show me some love boo show me the viper and I'll be more than glad to see it through yo peep it I know you're loving I know you love Victoria's eGrid so it was it was a combo of wisdom body and ice cream yes and I'm sure it's just which is just two tracks later on this album that's how good it is yeah I mean the video for Stork Patrol answered the question what would it be like if the guys from Stella and Wu Tang had a baby exactly and then the highest when we were talking about our song the highest we were trying to think of high songs and we it was kind of a little of this which is a little of lazy Sunday but then you guys in in trouble and you're going straight at it those other ones were like also Paul Revere and you know by the Beastie boys and stuff yeah this one you're like no this because of the beat this is strictly this so much it's so much yeah we're not even we're not even being like oh I guess it's kind of inspired by that we were like oh let's do a ghost in Ray yeah had you read somewhere that they had had trouble on dookie islands of any sort like in their bathrooms or I know it's pure pure speculation no one can say I'm sure there's got to be some bathroom lines and the you know before we got us to know back in LA our friend Chester and our friend James did a thing like this it was not comedic they were just kind of doing it do you remember that yes because I think it was a beat that I made or was it Prince who's your buddy Prince um Prince Marv what was that Kobe Prince Kobe's Kobe like yeah oh my God who was his fucking Prince marvelous oh my God who made some fucking incredible no I don't think it was that was it was it on the Dell's beat that I made feel like I like I did this sample and fucking James and Chester to this like fucking ill it was pretty good it was pretty good but I can high strap but as Andy said it not intended to be funny a little funny it was more funny just that it existed but they did an excellent job of like sounding like their cadence and their trade-offs and stuff so I would be remiss to not mention that we had heard that and also Stork Patrol obviously was precursor yeah this was Andy's idea though I will say for for the actual what the heist was not like we wanted to do this but it was your idea to do like a thing about like how we're shitting ourselves like for an entire song yeah no that makes sense but I think it really was specifically the word dukey over and over again was what and saying it was this intensity oh that's pretty much the whole stuff I remember when I'd come in and ask you guys would say like it's funny because it's never happened it's never happened it's like oh what it's like a what if it's just like a big what if song it's so funny key but I feel like what you're getting at is like like an embarrassing story of two men having accidents over and over again but to me it's like it's just part of the fucking frenzy it's the mayhem like it's about the the swirling energy of the whole fucking occurrence you know I think we should just play it but before we do it hold on let me let me let me cut this though too because there was a there's a big part of this that we're missing which is the phrase trouble on dukey island so the phrase trouble on dukey out this comes from when I was making the magrubber movie I wanted to do a trailer where I think I talked about this where I said I was gonna cheat up and be like hey guys magrub's coming out like you know this the Thursday uh I want to run and check it out um we're thinking about changing the title anyway check out this trailer and then the trailer would play at the end instead of saying magrubber it would say trouble on dukey island and that was me the name of the movie and then like so I got Howard Parker who is the voiceover extraordinaire for universal and he did all of these these takes of it and then I was like well at one season the studio I want to get all of these different takes for like if it was a romantic comedy if it was like just so so he did like ten different versions of like trouble on dukey island trouble on dukey island I probably have like 500 takes of him doing these different versions of it five hundred okay uh if he did 20 different takes of each version a hundred let's say he did a hundred different versions of all so so uh so guy because I think I gave him like ten different versions suspense treble and hitting like you know whatever
So then we also knew new mark who was an incredible like master DJ like he was he's our mixer master mic And I was like, oh like we could chop this up and like have him do like and so that was in our arsenal of Things we had So when Andy was talking about you know taking dumps in a high song perfectly Yeah, yeah, if you got something like that in your back pocket You got a reverse engineer a whole song back. You do it. God. I get there. It's crazy though Because it seems like it would certainly have been you got the the professional movie VO guy after you came up with the song Wait, so you're um, do you have that some of those to play? I'm gonna find them. I have not looked them up Okay, great prep work before we had played just because it was cute up I just want to hear this the killer because it's so funny that the ones he used were dubbed in English Because it's just these weird dubbed voices Listen to how the incarcerated Scarface starts. He looks determined without being ruthless Something heroic. It's me There's a courage about it comes across so calm Acts like he has a dream full of passion You don't trust me, huh? You know why I do it. We're not supposed to trust anyone in our profession anyway It's got that kind of like uncanny weird can dove voice Just out of context that kind of actually makes it more interesting By the way applies to the entertainment industry - the don't trust anybody. Yeah in our profession. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that's what I'm always saying Mm-hmm. I guess you could say it also applies to like Oppenheimer's world is what we learned sorry Hoppy did you feel how did you feel when I mentioned that he was at like the place that we would do field trips as kids You're what's it called you Lawrence Livermore? Yeah, but it's Lawrence Livermore, but that's not what we called it, right? Something labs. What did we call it? Just Lawrence labs. That's what we would just call it just Lawrence labs when we go up there And what labs are Berkeley labs? They're doing a Lawrence Hall of Science. Is that what you're saying? Yeah, Lawrence Hall science So there's the Lawrence Hall of Science with Lawrence Livermore labs, but Lawrence Hall of Science was a like every elementary school every year You'd go up there you'd watch old movie type clips and take take a tour and but that's where Oppenheimer all the Josh Hartnet Seems are in Lawrence labs at Berkeley. Yeah, but it's not the same as Lawrence Hall of Science. They're near each other But it's not the same place. It's the same Lawrence. I was considered them the same thing But they're not I mean I take my kids there when we go back. Yeah, but that's where they made the fucking bomb your I know I know it's and it is the bomb that big whale that's up there. We're from the bank got. It's so interesting how the Bay with the Bay was very Conservative before the 60s. That's a little information for you guys. Did you know that? I mean was it everywhere? Yeah, probably but the Bay Yeah, the Bay was nothing like the Bay we grew up. He's changed, you know England in Medieval times was actually quite conservative Same or they would burn witches and whatnot Net and in Nick brought in the Renaissance. God. Sorry, Kiva. That was unnecessarily harsh brother. You're my brother I love you brother. I just wish I had the Oppenheimer soundtrack on just ready to hit every time you start saying some bullshit So it sounds important. We definitely keep that in our back pocket though when something else starts happening But should we listen to the song? Yeah, let's hear it. Yes, please. So here's the thing. This is another question that I want to answer today Because I've never looked at this but my guess is whatever the people think the lyrics are online or not a hundred percent correct Yep, already wrong Yeah, my work. It's his word Apple lyrics are probably just AI generation, right? Yeah, so they're gonna be but it's what your arm says ski mask did up Not mask it up right arm. Yes, correct But I think you need to look at genius website to see if the official lyrics are wrong I feel like that's where lyrics live on the internet. This is a look This is AI. We don't need to check if AI got right ski masked it up. It should be a mask did you know what I mean Which is not a word of course blast through the door blazing hell with the shells flying spider web the flat screen and one shot baby's crying Okay, it says get lit up So it says get lit up on genius, but it's get wet up Yeah, because when you get shot your clothing gets wet from the board right here when you're running out and the duchy's flying out of your jeans I take that more as like What do you say just like descriptive like I'm shitting a breath? Yeah, yeah, I'm shitting bricks Not like it's literally wild. I don't take it as that. There's any poop in your pants at all any fecal man And I think the intention was that on that first one you're supposed to be like what? Yeah, I like that clock I clock the word you're moving so fast the duchy that like shits flying out behind you, you know that it just like well Also just my partner in crime doesn't really notice it either Duky's flying out of my pants. You got the keys. Yeah, yeah, we're moving on. We're moving past it It's not something to get hung up on. Well, it's and it's a delicate joke You know, and so we were very conscious of like slowly drip, drip, drip, drip, drip into your brain Right, but anyways, that's where we're at right now. It's just laying the groundwork Okay, so it's like we're at like we have rabbit Even we're picturing it like dookies are busting out of my my jeans Like it's like they're filling up like a cartoon They're like gumballs Like they might not even smell They're just going to know if and that would have been the case in the video so you're when you're says it I go all that's funny, but he could also be potentially not literal He could just be like all the funny is that they're both using the same turn of phrase that no one uses that is the equivalent of like I was ship breaks. I was I was about to ship myself. I was so scared. It was so crazy We understand and I'm just like oh, that's funny. He said too, but then Then the jeans get ripped Right, and a bunch of duties of a bunch of duties It's not a pile or like just some smearing A fine line between delighting and being embarrassed to how much it still makes us laugh No one has ever Holded that in the history of poop dookies. There's a nice juxtaposition of energies. All right, let's keep going Is there a chance it's just a bunch of the Green Day album CDs? Just like flying out. There's always that chance always Okay, you know good those songs had to be for that for an album called duke to be that popular Like god damn are challenging people. You know how psyched their label had to be when they were like we got the title Like but don't worry. It's actually hooky as hell Straight to the top all number one most people don't know this, but do you know where they're from? I actually don't will you enlighten me? Yeah, just look it up real quick. Yeah, they're from the bay and actually You know that that's where we're from. Yeah, physically Berkeley and um little known fact I guess people from Berkeley obsessed with the word duke It would seem so Don't break all in the great mix with the duke, yeah, man I know so you've murdered a dog which is the number one thing not to do if you want audiences to like you Correct. Well, these are anti-cars. You committed the ultimate crime. Yeah. Is there is there a website that like does the dog die in the song? Yes, yeah, I don't know if they need it for songs because it's so rare That's a great question. Also, I think there's really no debate It's brains are all of the grass mix with the duke. Yeah times. Yeah apologies to anyone who's just waking up and listening to this That's me. We do a lot of we do a lot of songs where there's like premise that the two people in the song very much agree with and then do a lot of agreeing with each other Mm-hmm It's also one of our favorite just styles of written comedy as well like Just uh in terms of the bill in Ted dynamic of like I agree with you Yeah, that idea um-hmm up my alley waiting garth is another one you could have named check Yeah, sure the stepbrothers of the film stepbrothers, but it's like bill and Ted waiting garth who came first, you know When on the way to garth no actually they're very I think bill and Ted came out before windswell Oh, but the sketch windswell who who who who who who who that's something I wish to it's a way to find out unfortunately We'll never it is in the tittest is there a history there we'll never know yeah All right Oh, yeah, it's my pause there because I had some questions I filled up his pants
- That's right. - And then went up into the shirt. - Yeah, they came up so high that they were popping out of the front of his shirt. - I picture it like popcorn. You know how popcorn comes out the top and then sort of burbling up out of his pants up to the shirt area. And he had his shirt tucked in. - But it's like when you have that terrible thing in a car seat with a baby or a toddler where the dookie does come out of their shirt because-- - But that's real key. If you're talking about real dookie now, which I don't really like. I like our version, which is gumballs. - Yeah, a little bit like the rabbit pellets. You're talking pellets in this. - Yeah, this isn't cockatoo. - Yeah, or it's like, you know, I don't want to get too much into the detail of it. But like it's tubular, but it's like, there's no smell, odorless, firm, almost like it's like a cartoon. - Pleasant. - Yeah. - That's so crazy. You don't want to get too much into the detail. If you tucked your pant leg into your socks, poured marbles into the top till they were absolutely chock full. - Yeah, or dookie'd in your pants? - Yeah, then somebody would rip the leg. Boy, those marbles would go everywhere. If your leg didn't get ripped and then you were doing something like hopping fences and stuff, they might start bubbling out above your belt line. - Easily. - I'm pretty sure that's where the term lost your marbles comes from. - Well, let me just say that the reference to isotoner gloves and dookie's popping out of his isotoch, took them by isotoner gloves and shook the dookies out. There, I mean, now it's a problem. Before it was like manageable, but, you know, this is-- - Oh yeah, isotoner gloves just seemed like something that Ghost Face Array Quad would say. - There's a lot of specifics. - It feels very East Coast people that wear leather gloves to get out of the cold or commit crimes. - And I remember isotoner glove commercials would run a lot when we were kids. - Yeah. - On Genius.com, it says, you know, it's the Jakes, they want us to be chased, but someone has already put a note in saying it should be they wise to the chase, which is what it is. - Yes, and for those of you who don't know, Jakes are police officers that's a East Coast lying for police officers. - Gee, anything on Genius was any of the descriptions that people wrote, funny, Andy, of like trying to explain what the lines mean? - Um, it's like I just did. - Like hand holding. - Like, their pants are obviously tucked into their socks, causing the dookies to come out of the tops of their shirts. - Not really. - Okay. Continue. - Sorry. - And we're about to get to my favorite line. (upbeat music) - So, for it to get into your gloves, it's like, yes, you're wearing a long sleeve T-shirt of some sort. I say T-shirt 'cause that's me thin enough to be able to tuck into the gloves. - Right. - And then the dookies had filled all the way up through your shirt and then had gone down your shirt sleeve into your gloves, kind of like, where you had to like shake some out like it was us. - No, that's why these dookies have to be relatively firm, right, because if they were smeary, I don't want to get into details again. - I don't like the word smeary. I don't want that on this pod. I don't want to say smeary on this pod. - Okay, so they're firm. - This is Andy's nightmare. - This is the whole reason he didn't want to do the pod. He knew it would get to this episode and people would be describing different kinds of dookies. - We're like two popcorn, not what the song is about. - Okay. - Okay, so we loved this line. - So, you're just ditching some more. So at this point, you guys are getting really slow down from the dead dukey weight. - What am I saying? - I'm so much. - Whatever your performance is is the line so I could dump the dookies. - He's the one got the blue dookies. - He knows your ahead of him at this point. He's like ripped off Mike, 'cause he said what he's doing first. He's ripping off his skull, meaning he's like hat. - His skull he filled up. How did he even get in there? - Yeah, I jumped above your neckline into your hat. And then he's like, "But you know why?" So I can rip the dookies. - That's always the most important. - All the lines that I feel like Andy enjoys me. - Andy really gets specific occasionally with his line reads on this and like, and he knows your limit. He really is very good at knowing your limit and is like, "It's gotta be harder. "It's gotta be harder." "So what can you do?" And then, yes, we're good. We got it. And when he doubles over and is laughing, I'm like, "No, there was." - There was. (laughing) - The fact that it's plural again is just wonderful. There's, there are lots of dookies in there. - Yeah, in the scully. - One other thing about the recording of the vocals is, we talked a lot about the voice I'm doing specifically. It's not totally in my range. So it's, it gets very grating. And I think you helped us with this two key, but I remember us tweaking it a lot, which was I did a double and one of them is much lower register and not the shrill high register thing. And we fucked around with it a lot to find a balance that didn't feel too annoying to the ear. But it's still right on the edge. - Yeah, that's right, that's right. - If not over it. - Yeah. - We're manipulators. Master manipulators. (upbeat music) - Oh, what? - A little Greek mythology. - No. - Yeah. - It's like the two, is that like the two pennies on their, I like crossing the river sticks, you need. But you just took two of your countless dookies in place, one dookie on each eye. I would probably. - No, no, on his chest. - On his chest. - That was a weirder put the right foot of the left. - Right, for the boatman to take him to where? Where does the boatman take the bodies back then? You got to, dookie islands? - Oh, sorry, yeah. In ours, it's probably to dookie islands. - Where they go. - Right, or Davey Jones locker, am I right guys? - In Greek mythology, you leave two coins over the eyes, and one in the mouth, this is ingenious. - Oh, someone who has deceased for the ferryman, caron boatman, so he could carry your soul across the river sticks and into Hades. - Into Hades. - So you, but you skipped the one in the mouth. - Interesting. - Well, there's just two on the chest. This is dookie island. - You gotta pay him to take him in. - A little cheaper to get into dookie island than Hades. - Two dookies. - But yes, I was aware of the two coins, or I didn't realize it was three coins for the boatman. - We would have changed that if we had done a research. Now, on the technical side, Andy, to your point, I did notice that both your voices sounded different on some than other ones, but I can't hear the doubles on either of you. So I think either there are doubles where you guys perform to twice, and we're layering, but we tucked them in so perfectly aligned, and so lightly that I'm hearing it. It just isn't an interesting tone of voice. It truly is not reading as double at all. - I mean, well, really, that's good. - We did this occasionally where it's like, one, we'll have the lead, and we certainly do it on choruses a lot, where you obviously have more lead vocals and they're more centered, and then we like, pull the other ones apart, and they're lowered down, and we drop decibels on that. So I would imagine that on this, to get the tone you're talking about, Andy, your second one was just lowered, like by a couple of decibels, whatever, really. (upbeat music) ♪ They come and make great roles ♪ ♪ These dookies in the dry ♪ ♪ Hold up for dookies ♪ ♪ They come and out better ♪ ♪ I want to say who's my leg ♪ ♪ 'Cause I'm stuck on dookie now ♪ (upbeat music) - I mean, this is like, Butch Cassidy in the Sundance kid. - 'Cause I'm stuck on dookie now. I mean, just as any crime story, it always ends with comeuppance. - Yeah, now there's only 40 seconds left, and I actually want to stop interrupting it. So I'm gonna go back a team bit and play it to the end here, and then we can go back. and over and over and over and then there's one time at the end where we just have your arm continue through to the next line, it's very satisfying musicly. - Yes, 'cause then it switches like, - And our body's all same. - You switch like, when you expect the next guy to come in and it sounds like a great. - It sounds cool. And so the way that that works is like, that was like a, it wasn't a new thing, but when Serato came out and like a DJ equipment that could actually just take whatever MP3 you would have, you would load it up and then back in the day you would literally have to press it to vinyl to be able to scratch stuff. But then digitally you can just take it anything, send it to a rad DJ and have him scratch it and you can do any piece of it. - Yeah, but it's still real scratching. It's still a record and the mixer. But it's just that the record is digital. I'm saying cop blazed out the Eucalyptus trying to shoot me and that is very much a Bay reference 'cause there's a lot of Eucalyptus there. - Eucalyptus? - I had a friend growing up whose dad had a mission to get rid of Eucalyptus in California because it was not a native plant. - Yes, it's from Australia. - Really come from Australia or something? - Yes, I believe so. - I wouldn't dare guess. - So this is Howard Parker reading the lines of "Trouble on Duky Island" and I like it too, as well as this as the date, you know. - Today is March 19th, 2010. And there's a whole wonderful sweet moment in the movie where Falco and a Trail were looking for each other. And there's just a back and forth that's seared into my mind forever, the audio of it, the Falco or a Trail. - 'Cause they're trying to find each other. - Yeah. - And then it was like, you know what it really is? It's the, you know, you'll know exactly this. The old audio sketch, the like Martha, Bob, Martha. You know what I'm talking about? - Yeah, to like, to like, is it Bob? I think it is. - I think it's Bob and Martha, yeah. - I feel like we should play that so people can understand. - Yes, to see how highbrow what you were barring from was. - Back to never ending story while he looks. - I tried to turn it on for my kids and it seemed like it might suck. And I was like, this is the best fucking movie. I loved it when I was a kid and I turned it on. And I was like, if you don't like it after 10 minutes, we'd turn off. And after like six, I was like, guys, you don't have to sit there, it's fine. And then two, like, it's slower. It's slower than most things because it's an older movie. But it was like shrill. It was like a lot of screaming puppets, like going, "Mah!" - Oh, you got to the puppets then. Well, first of all, it was made in Germany and actually it was filmed where we filmed a conferee at this one big studio, which was also fun because while I was walking around dressed as Hitler in Germany at a studio, there would be like tour groups coming by. I'd be like, "Hi! How's it going?" - That's fun, but never ending story was shot. - That's what I mean. And those puppets feel super fucking German. They feel they're like nasty to look at and like, you know what I mean? - The snail guy and the weirdo, like, that's kind of what I'm getting at. He's like, "They couldn't get past." - How gross it was? - Yeah, just it was just so unpleasant. And I'd love that movie. And it was so unpleasant in the first 10 minutes. I couldn't, they couldn't get past it, but maybe I need to-- - We can talk about this movie a lot because I was writing something that was similar with Brett McKenzie, and I got very deep into adventure movies that go into a different world. And it's all the cycles of grief. And it's pretty rad when you actually break it down. And the second act has all of the different cycles of grief, of like, you know, denial apathy. And then culminating with like him seeing himself in the mirror and then back.
switching with his avatar and I think it's a really well written because also because the book of never ending story is off the fucking rails and goes bizarre places and it's only the first half of Podcast Summary
Key Points:
The podcast celebrates the song "Trouble on Ducky Island" as a humorous, surreal, and deeply personal reference rooted in shared childhood memories and East Coast culture.
The title and lyrics are interpreted as a playful, absurd metaphor for embarrassment, bodily accidents, and the chaotic energy of youth—particularly involving "dookies" (a fictional, firm, odorless, cartoonish substance that "pop out" of clothes).
The song’s origins trace back to a fictional movie concept, inspired by a joke from a 1990s film, and later expanded through real-life influences like a movie voiceover session by Howard Parker, who recorded “Trouble on Ducky Island” over 12 takes.
The group explores deep connections to childhood nostalgia, including references to Wu Tang Clan music, the film *Only Built for Cuban Links*, and the cultural impact of shows like *Bill & Ted* and *Wayne’s World*.
