In the lead-up to the U.S. midterm elections, a dramatic political shift unfolded in Michigan as former Democratic Senate candidate Hailey Stevens endorsed Republican Mike Rogers just hours before voting. This move, seen as a sign of political introspection, drew praise from President Trump and Senate leader Mike Johnson, though critics questioned its strategic impact. Meanwhile, the Senate race remains tightly contested, with key races in Michigan and Texas shaping the outcome. In Texas, a young Democratic candidate, James Telesco, aims to break a long-standing Republican hold on statewide office. On the global stage, Ukraine faced a major drone strike on a medical facility and a cyberattack on its air raid alert system, raising concerns over Russian aggression and digital vulnerabilities. Europe is grappling with another refrigerator hack that damaged food supplies across several countries, with no suspects identified. In the financial world, Binance recovered from a massive data breach, though customer withdrawals surged, signaling lasting trust issues in crypto. Separately, a fatal plane crash in Florida killed all on board, and NASA concluded a successful 378-day Mars simulation, reinforcing future ambitions for human missions to Mars. These events underscore a week of high-stakes political, technological, and humanitarian developments shaping global and national narratives.
Hi, I'm Kim Vanell in Wangenewy, New Zealand. And I'm Christopher Walgespr in Chicago. It's Monday, November 2nd, today. Democratic Congresswoman Hailey Stevens, who lost Michigan Senate primary to Abdul-El-Said, endorses his Republican rival, less than 48 hours, before the midterms. And another fridge hack, crippled supermarkets across Europe. This is Royce's World News, bringing you everything you need to know from the front lines in 10 minutes, seven days a week. This is another example of what it looked like just at water level and below. On the eve of the midterm elections, U.S. President Donald Trump made his closing case to voters during a speech at the Lincoln Memorial. He spoke mostly about renovations to the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial and other national park projects. He also spoke about cleaning up graffiti and receding grass at the White House lawn and other spots around D.C. Over in Alaska, the GOP suffered a clear sit-back. A federal judge dismissing the Justice Department's lawsuit seeking to block certification of results if Republican incumbent Senator Dan S. Sullivan narrowly loses. The DOJ argued voters may be confused by the presence of a challenger named Dan J. Sullivan Jr. on the same ballot. While polls show Democrats are favored to win the House, the battle for control of the Senate is particularly tight, where a handful of races are likely to determine the outcome. The Justice Department plans to appeal the ruling. This is the conscience of the Senate right now and our Michigan moment. With less than 24 hours to go before voting begins in the U.S. midterm elections, there's been a dramatic development in Michigan, which could have a big impact on a race viewed as crucial to democratic hopes of retaking the Senate. I am endorsing my graduates for the United States Senate. Today, Democrat Hayley Stevens, who lost the Senate primary to upheld ill-scied in a bitterly fought race, posting on social media that she's endorsing the Republican challenger, Mike Rogers, attending a church service in Detroit with Rogers, the pair addressed the media together. This is about looking in the mirror about how real Democrats for Rogers are. This is just courage and politics in America today. Our speaker, Mike Johnson, says he's spoken with Stevens to commend her. And President Donald Trump says he plans to reach out too. I think she was very brave doing it and she did it for the people of Michigan and I have great respect. I don't know, or I've never met her, but I have great respect for her. Abdul-Alsaid, though, says he won't be distracted. I'm just less interested in the politics of it all than I am in the policy of it all. It is reported Nathan Lane is in Detroit and has more on what it all may mean. This race is incredibly important for both parties, but it's you could argue it's more important for the Democratic Party because the Democrats already hold the seat, right? So Gary Peters is retiring, he's a Democratic senator, but the Democrats were to lose this seat. It's a loss, right? It's a pure loss. And they can't afford to do that. I would also say there's obviously a lot of focus on what Hayley Stevens is doing, but it's also important to remember that I think most people have made up their minds already. You could argue both ways. You could argue that this is a negative for Elsaid and that's a pretty logical argument, right? You could also argue it could be a positive for Elsaid because it sort of allows him to say, look, I don't want all these distractions. Because I want to focus on the core campaign issues, his campaign people told me I think he raised like $1.2 million in a few hours of Hayley Stevens endorsement. Another key race which could impact with the Democrats when the Senate is Texas. No Democrat has one statewide office there since 1994, but the party is hoping 37-year-old James Telereco will break the drought. They'll show the state representative, seminarian and former schoolteacher narrowly ahead of Republican attorney general Ken Paxton. Boy, he's headed to Austin's famed, broken, spoke dance hall of the weekend to get a sense of how Republicans, like Debbie King, are feeling. Yeah, it's not looking too good for the Republicans on all things, but we still have hope, right? 51-year-old Bill Frisbee remains cautious of predictions. I think I'm concerned, like a lot of concerns are here, but I also am not sure I trust the polling that's out there. It's been notoriously off. Ukraine's military says Russian forces used the pause to reinforce positions along the front line, an accusation that the Kremlin is also making against Kiev. The strike comes as Ukraine's Air Force and says the country's public air raid alert system was hacked over the weekend. For a short time, the app said that Kiev and other areas were subject to nuclear and chemical alerts and the threat of street combat. Yulia Tsarkin in Kiev says she worries that other apps could be compromised as well. Separately, Russian state news said Russia's emergency ministry was hit by a massive cyber attack that also led to the publication of fake information. It was not immediately clear whether the two incidents were linked. Meanwhile, European supermarkets are dealing with the fallout of another refrigerator hack, this time striking across the continent. It comes just weeks after a similar attack hit supermarket fridges in France. This one crippled grocery stores in Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden and Estonia. In each case, hackers remotely increased the temperature in internet-connected freezers to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. It spoiled food and even caused fires. No one has claimed responsibility and investigators have not yet identified who's behind the attacks. Binance, the world's biggest cryptocurrency exchange, has seen a spike in withdrawals. After going back online, following what analysts say could be one of the biggest financial robberies in history. Here's Mike Dolan from our sister podcast Morning Bid with more on the market impact. So it's an extraordinary story in the middle of a very big market sell-off otherwise last Friday. It seems that Binance has gone back online. It seems that it's recovered most of the money that was lost and it claims that there will be no loss from customers. That said, withdrawals from by its own customers have picked up as a result of this clearly a confidence hit to the exchange itself and probably to the wider crypto industry. But it comes almost as a side show against what was happening in the backdrop late last week, which was this enormous sell-off in the very core of the AI stocks and the tech sector with Intel dropping almost 30% on Friday. And we cleared the worst months for the Nasdaq since March 2025. Thanks Mike. Catch Morning Bid wherever you get your podcasts. An eyewitness films a huge burning crater in a road made moments earlier by a legit which crashed into the ground near Crest Haven, Florida. All nine people on board were killed. The plane had taken off from Texas and was heading to the Bahamas. An investigation is underway. And finally, the four volunteers have emerged from more than a year in isolation at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. It's part of a simulated Mars mission designed to help prepare astronauts for the real thing. We are absolutely humbled and proud to have contributed to the colossal undertaking. Mission commander Ross Elder says a "manned mission to Mars" is inevitable. The crew spent 378 days inside a 3D-printed habitat, growing crops in a fake Martian soil and dealing with communication delays that would exist on an actual mission, which could come as early as the 2030s.
