Gina Hinojosa, the Democratic candidate challenging Governor Greg Abbott in Texas, argues that the current administration is deeply flawed, prioritizing billionaire interests—like Elon Musk—over ordinary citizens. She highlights extreme tax breaks, environmental harm from data centers, and systemic neglect of public services such as healthcare and electricity. Hinojosa criticizes Abbott’s policies, including his support for restrictive abortion laws that endanger women’s lives and his failure to protect voters from manipulation and fraud. She points to widespread public anger and a growing sense of injustice driven by decades of Republican dominance. While acknowledging that overturning these policies will require broader democratic change, she commits to ending criminal penalties for doctors providing care to rape victims and protecting women’s health. Hinojosa frames the 2024 election as a pivotal moment to break the cycle of political corruption and voter suppression, urging Texans—especially young people—to participate and support her campaign through donations and volunteering. She believes that without a shift in political power, Texas will continue to face deteriorating conditions, and that this election offers a real chance to restore fairness, accountability, and public trust.
Joining me today on IHIP News is Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa in Texas,
who is taking on the terrible, awful Governor Greg Abbott.
Gina, how are you today?
I'm wonderful. We are voting and we are winning.
Gina, let me ask you, do you think Elon Musk should pay taxes in the state of Texas?
Absolutely. He should pay his fair share, just like every other Texan.
I mean, we have some of the highest taxes in America under Greg Abbott.
Our property taxes have increased 85 percent, right?
I will tell you that Elon Musk, as the world's only trillionaire,
has no business getting tax breaks from Greg Abbott.
But he has received millions, 1.6 billion tax exemption
for his business.
In Texas, he is receiving very, they tried to sell the beach to him just last week.
There was a draft agenda released where the state of Texas was trying to sell
Boca Chica Beach to Elon Musk.
They have an agenda item posted for the two days after the election.
They have now backtracked.
But like this is, this is the problem we have in Texas.
We have a governor who does the bidding of the moneyed interest.
There is no tax break.
There is no bigger moneyed interest than Elon Musk.
And the rest of us have been left out to dry.
Texans are having to fend for themselves because we have a governor and a government that works
not for us, but the special interests.
You're exactly right about the quid pro quo.
Pop this up, Kylie.
The Swamp Watch says Elon Musk gave Texas GOP Governor Greg Abbott's campaign $500,000.
About three months later, Abbott signed,
and he paid off on an over $1.6 billion in tax breaks for Musk's chip plant.
I also saw a video that down in Brownsville, Texas, where Elon Musk is doing his rocket ship launches.
The community, it's like they live in a permanent state of an earthquake.
And oftentimes you see Elon Musk and politicians like Greg Abbott exploiting working class people that they deem not worthy of quality of life.
And Greg Abbott,
consistently and constantly, seems to want to kiss the ass of billionaires,
whether it be Donald Trump and all of the criminals in the executive branch or Elon Musk.
But I have seen some really good news, some really tightening polls that some of them have you like within a couple of points.
Give my listeners the most recent on the polling down there.
Yeah, we've got at least six polls in five weeks that show us beating Greg Abbott, not by a lot, by a lot.
By a little bit, but I don't think we've received a poll within the last two months that is outside the margin of error.
This race is neck and neck.
There are big national stakes at play here because Republicans in Austin have already said they're going to redraw maps next year now that the Voting Rights Act has been gutted by the U.S. Supreme Court.
And when that happens and it's all said and done, we will lose 10 Democrats from Congress out of Texas.
There is no control.
Democratic.
Democratic control of Congress when that happens.
Texas becomes too big.
The math no longer works.
So we need a governor in Texas who will veto rig maps, whether they are rigged for Democrats or Republicans.
But I will be that governor.
I think that's, I mean, exactly what we need because Republicans are constantly trying to cheat.
But early voting in Texas starts today.
I see that you voted.
Yes.
And it says I see your sticker.
And there has been a lot of concern.
In Texas about voters being removed from voter rolls.
Do you have confidence that this election will be administered fairly?
And I'm very concerned about it because the person that I know that constantly engages in voter fraud is Donald Trump.
I've heard it with my own ears when he called Georgia in 2020 and asked for somebody to find 11,000 imaginary ballots.
And I think your opponent, Governor Abbott, would be the type of guy.
That would break the law for Donald Trump.
Well, here's the thing we have going for us in Texas.
All of our elections are run locally by the local counties and the counties with the most Texans and the most voters are controlled by Democrats.
And look, we've always had shenanigans in Texas, but also we've always had free and fair elections.
We figure out how to work through those shenanigans like the time when they said they had run out of paper for voter registration.
I mean, we deal with ridiculousness in Texas and we're used to it, but they can't stop the change that is coming.
People are so motivated to vote in this election.
Young people are back, thank God, and understand the stakes and are excited about my candidacy, James' candidacy.
And so, look, I have no doubt that people are going to turn out to vote and we will be watchful.
We have a strong voter protection.
We have a strong voter protection program here in Texas and we are vigilant, but also telling people your vote matters.
We have free and fair elections in Texas so long as we've always known and we have to operate as such.
And if there are problems, we will take appropriate action and strong action to defend the vote.
And your opponent, Greg Abbott, has been an absolute failure as governor, as most of these Republican governors are for red states.
As you know, I'm from your neighboring state, Oklahoma.
I was born and raised in California, Boomer Sooner, sorry about your loss last weekend, but the Kevin Stitt is an abject failure as a governor, Greg Abbott is an abject failure as a governor, and pop this up, Callie, you showed up to the governor's mansion to debate Greg Abbott, and he was a big fat no-show.
What do you think this guy is so scared of, this big tough guy that does all this tough talk, what do you think he's scared of sitting down debating you?
Well, he's a weak governor, you pointed that out earlier.
He is propped up by his billionaire donors and if he doesn't have them with him, then he can't, he can't lead, he can't look strong.
So he uses the billions of dollars or the millions of dollars from his billionaire donors to say lies about me on TV.
He won't face me because he knows I'll expose him and also he's running from his record and he's running from the voters.
We have the most people without health insurance of any state in America.
We have the most people being disconnected from their electricity of any state in America, because they cannot afford to pay their bills in Texas.
That is the energy powerhouse of the nation and beyond Texans can't afford to keep their lights open.
We have the most bankruptcies of any state in America.
That is Greg Abbott's record, despite the fact that our property taxes have gone up 85% under Greg Abbott.
We have nothing to show for it.
It is a system of grift.
We are paying into a system that is worth it.
It is working against us.
People know it in Texas.
People are angry.
They know who's been in charge for the last 12 years.
They know which party has been in charge for the last 30 years.
And where we are today in Texas, unfortunately, is just like the saying goes, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
And that is the unfortunate situation we have here in Texas right now.
And so data centers have been a huge issue in Texas.
And I think this is something that I've seen a lot of bipartisan support against the data centers.
Talk about the impact that these data centers are having on Texas communities and how these data centers are actually making these tech oligarchs like the most famous, most evil one that lives down in your state, Elon Musk, even richer.
Tell me where Texans are and am I correct that they're both Republicans and Democrats?
Adam and Lee oppose this.
And where does Greg Abbott stand on this?
I think I can probably figure that out.
Right.
Well, I will tell you, it's so interesting in Texas, the biggest pushback against the data centers is probably coming from MAGA because it is hitting rural Texas in a disproportionate way.
We have the most data centers of any state in America.
They have been invited in by Greg Abbott with the richest tax breaks in the country.
They paid no sales tax on their labor.
They have electricity that they consume for 20 years and we know they consume a lot of electricity.
And so we're losing over a billion dollars a year in Texas because of these taxpayer giveaways to the data centers signed into law by Greg Abbott.
And people are angry about it.
They know they're owned by the richest men in the world.
We should not be subsidizing them.
You know, at minimum, they should pay for themselves.
We know that they guzzle a lot of water and they consume a lot of electricity.
We've had big grid concerns.
It's an understatement.
We had our grid go down under Greg Abbott's leadership in 2021.
We had over 600 Texans perish.
There's big and legitimate concerns about can our grid sustain that kind of impact.
And we are struggling through drought in this state.
I was in Amarillo meeting with some constituents, with some Texans who had been fighting against what is the world's largest data center.
It is called Project Matador.
It is on state property.
Its biggest investors are former Governor Rick Perry and his son,
they negotiated a deal with the municipal the city water to get all of their water from city water
when residents asked the spokesperson from the city water what happens if there's not enough
water for residents and the data center they were told that because they're they the city was under
legal obligation to provide water to the data center by contract the residents would be turned
off shut off from water first and so when i say there are no protections for texans against the
excesses of these data centers and these hyperscale data centers that have hyperscale impacts
on our state and our communities like there are no protections and greg abbott
is allowing that to happen he's now flip-flop rhetorically saying that he's going to be strong
on the data centers but without passing laws to protect people that's just talk right
talk is cheap and most of us understand that he will sing a new tune november 4th after the election
totally and here's the problem with republican politicians before trump and especially during
trump they cater to corporate interests they lie to their constituents and i've seen this my whole
life i've seen republican politicians go into rural oklahoma and in your case rural texas and lie
and say these
immigrants are taking your jobs these gay people are messing up your traditional family and they lie and they lie and they lie and they use faith to manipulate these people and then they always bait and switch and they always go and support the richest most evil corporations in the world and i think it's all of these republican politicians whether it's abbott or ken paxton who is the worst or ted cruz
who is even worse than ken paxton i mean the worst most hated person on the planet or mike rogers up in michigan they're all all of a sudden oh we found jesus on the uh data centers we're against it and it's like oh give me a break i mean please please spare us all but greg abbott has been such a horrific governor he he genuinely doesn't care about women at all um greg abbott supports the rights of rapists this is my opinion
greg abbott supports the rights of rapists over the rights of women and texas obviously has millions of women that live there and texas has some of the strictest abortion laws in the country that provide no exception for rape or incest and that's the part where he is valuing the rights of a rapist over the rights of a rape victim and doctors are being threatened with lifetime prison sentences for providing this care
this is some pretty um evil shit right here this is it's really so toxic that he is so engaged in the health care of women who have been sexually assaulted and he thinks it's his business i think it's creepy i think it's freaky i think it's weird as shit because here's the thing republican women get raped and democratic women get raped and republican women have ectopic pregnancies and democratic women get raped
and republican women get raped and democratic women have the same so please tell us how you are going to try to turn the page on this holy anti-woman policy where this man lies to people and gets them to vote against the health care of their own daughters which i think is as evil as it gets well you are right greg abbott doesn't care about texans and women in particular are dying because of it in fact he just delayed the release of the
the maternal mortality report till after the election this would have been our first insight into how this extreme abortion ban is impacting women's lives we have heard stories we know too many women have died but this would be the actual data to show us how much so we anticipate it is pretty bad listen right now because doctors face 99 years in prison um if they terminate a pregnancy and then they're overruled by political board as
as that termination not being necessary to sustain the life of the woman they face 99 years in prison right and so what is happening in texas is that doctors are terrified of intervening when a woman who is pregnant is in crisis and they wait until she is at death's door and too often it is too late right and yes so women are dying i do think that there is opportunity to
to come together in a bipartisan way to save the lives of women i know lots of republicans that
don't support these criminal penalties for doctors and i that has to be the priority saving women's
lives have has to be the priority and and that is what i have committed on this campaign trail to
making my priority it's to saving women's lives by doing away with those criminal penalties for
doctors so is there is that just as
far as you go or do you have intentions to reverse this ban i'm not going to pretend
that the election of governor reverses an abortion ban we are in a deep hole in texas
and i am 100 for the rights of rodney wade but it's not going to take it's going to
take more than my election to make that happen we have to start somewhere it's going to take
us time and work to get back to those rights i think the place we can start
is again doing away with those criminal penalties if the legislation came to your desk to overturn
these um abortion bans would you sign it of course i would sign it but that is not reality
that's just not jen i mean we are living in a time in texas where republicans control
the legislature and um and and that is just not within the reality and i stress that jen
i'm not going to do that because i don't want people to expect from me what i cannot deliver
i will tell you what i think i can deliver but i'm not going to um disrespect the voters
and pretend like that is something i can deliver that is work that has to be done by texans
to elect a democratic majority that cares about these things and we're not there yet
so you're telling me if i live in texas and i voted maga three different elections i'm
going to vote maga four different election cycles you have a maga governor you have a
maga legislature what about the supreme court are those republican appointed yeah the states
so if anybody's dissatisfied with the way texas is run it's it's the republicans fault
right yes they've been in control for 30 years for 30 years and do you hear on the ground
because i hear this in oklahoma a lot the republicans have been in charge forever things
have got to change and i'm like you keep voting for me i'm not going to vote for you because
i'm voting for the same dipshits that drive the state into the ground and this is before
we even get to education which of course you know texas is very much struggling there too
and we could go on all day about how bad these mega politicians are but i appreciate your
um truthfulness about how difficult this fight is going to be on a state level to um overturn
these draconian uh punitive laws that um pro-life and those of you listening i put that in quotes
ken paxton and uh greg abbott support but tell my listeners because this is critical
i mean it's critical that this is the first time we've been really close to flipping texas
it's been you know flirting with purple but there's real potential for talarico and you
to actually win it's my understanding that you're not getting a lot of support from the
democratic party um additional funds and so let's just do what we do best which is uh
people-powered candid candidacy so tell my listeners how they can help you in texas and
help all these women that greg abbott is killing with impunity yes they can go to my website
gina for texas.com um you can donate there you can sign up to volunteer we need everybody doing
everything they can jen because we are so close so close and if we don't win this time they'll
never let us get this close again um so this is an
opportunity really of a generation i completely agree please go support gina and we'll be back
later with more news
