Trump's Midterm Messaging Strategy, Botched Execution Fallout, Daylight Saving Fight: AM Update 10/5

President Trump is launching a high-energy campaign across multiple states, urging voters to participate in the upcoming midterms with strong rhetoric about Republican victory and economic gains. He criticizes Democrats for worsening inflation, border issues, and social policies, while pushing for permanent daylight savings time, accusing Senator Tom Cotton of blocking the legislation. The effort includes publicly sharing Cotton’s phone number to pressure him, highlighting a pattern of aggressive political tactics. Meanwhile, Tennessee faces a major crisis after two failed executions, with the state’s corrections commissioner resigning amid unanswered questions about the medical procedures and patient survival. Christa Pike, who survived two doses of lethal injection, remains in a critical condition, prompting calls for a full independent review and systemic reform. The Coast Guard has ended its search for a missing medical flight after locating debris off Nantucket, though no wreckage or black box has been found. On a separate front, a weight loss supplement called Lean is being marketed with claims of appetite suppression and blood sugar reduction, while polling shows significant public disapproval of Trump’s leadership and growing support for Democratic control of Congress. These events underscore a turbulent political climate marked by controversy, public health concerns, and escalating political polarization.

President Trump on the campaign trail over the weekend urging supporters to turn out for next month's midterm elections now just 29 days away. At a rally in Ohio Saturday, the president keeping it simple, telling audience members, get out, vote, and back Republican candidates. Mr. Trump predicting a landslide victory for the GOP using colorful language to describe beating Democrats at the polls. Early voting begins October 6th and ends on Sunday, November 1st. Go out or just vote on election day, November 3rd. I think we're going to have a big surprise because they don't know what's happening. Did anybody see last night in Alabama? Did you see it? Did you see it? Last night in Alabama, you could have had, we could have filled up a stadium and we had a six or 7,000 see the arena. We could have filled up anything. And then we went also the night before to Texas same thing and we went that same night to a place called Oklahoma where I won 77 out of 77 counties all three times and that's never happened because they're in for a big surprise. You just got to, very simple, you got to get out and vote. You got to get out. You got to vote for these guys. Just get out and vote. If you do that, we're going to win or we're going to win big. And we're going to shove it up their ass. The president talking up his accomplishments as well as what could come from Democrats if Republicans do not maintain their majority in Congress. They voted against securing our border. Every single one of them said, no, no, we want people to come in from all over the world and from prisons and drug dealers and murderers. They voted in favor of the trans-gette of utilization of your children. They voted in favor. They voted in favor of men playing in women's sports. They continuously fighting. You know, we wrote it out. We wanted the Supreme Court. We want we want everything. But they continue to fight for men to play in women's sports. So I don't get it. But I'd like that they continue to fight because as long as they do, they can't win elections. There are a bunch of dumb son of a bitches. They voted in favor of the worst inflation and the highest energy cost in American history. Now the communists want to do even worse on election night. Ohio is going to prove that America does not belong to those who hate it. America belongs to those who love it. White House official saying the president plans to campaign in at least 17 states before election day. Mr. Trump beginning his stretch last week, hitting Texas and Oklahoma on Thursday, then Alabama on Friday, all red states. The president saturday stumping in Ohio for U.S. Senator John Houston and Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswami. Houston's Senate race becoming a worry for Republicans. His past support for data centers drawing criticism among Ohioans with a GOP memo flagging it as a liability according to NBC. This week alone, a Senate Republican super PAC pouring another $14 million into the race, bringing its total investment in Ohio past $90 million the outlet reports. Houston running against Sherrod Brown, prediction market CalShi giving Houston just a 36% chance to win next month. Ramaswami running against Democrat Amy Acton with the exact same chance on CalShi. Give our sponsor CalShi a try by using code Megan Kelly or clicking the link in the description. All new users get $25 free when they trade just $25. As Mr. Trump hits the campaign trail, Republicans likely facing an uphill battle in November. The president's approval rating is sliding according to the real clear politics polling average. Mr. Trump's approval sitting at just 38%. A recent Quinnipiac university poll finding 51% of registered voters want Democrats to control the House if the election were held today compared to 39% who want Republicans in charge. That same poll finding 65% of respondents disapprove of the president's handling of the economy, 62% disapprove of his foreign policy. It's not just rallies the president is using to campaign. Here Mr. Trump making a big promise from the Oval Office in a video posted to ex on Saturday, every Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate. I'm going to give all adult citizens in the United States of America $5,000 and Republicans can do it and Democrats can't because we're taking in massive amounts of money through tariffs and record-setting economic success but Democrat policies won't allow this to happen. In fact the opposite is going to take place. They're going to raise your taxes and they're going to destroy our country and certainly destroy our economy. It'll be a 1929 disaster if they get in. So if the Democrats win you will have an economic depression much like 1929. If the Republicans win, you will each have $5,000 in your pocket and economic success for our country like we have never ever seen before. President Trump heading to Nebraska today followed by another Texas stop on Wednesday later this week. Days after Tennessee's second botched execution this year ahead of the state's prison system is stepping down. Governor Bill Lee announcing Saturday, Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strata will leave his post later this month. In a statement the governor saying quote, Commissioner Strata has served with integrity and I appreciate his willingness to put the interests of Tennesseans first during this difficult moment. I have accepted his decision to step down and am grateful for his commitment to ensuring a smooth leadership transition. The governor's office telling various outlets former U.S. Attorney Ed Stanton will lead an independent investigation into the execution. Commissioner Strata facing bipartisan calls to resign since Wednesday's failed execution of Christa Pike, who survived not one but two doses of the lethal drug, Penta Barbertole. According to court documents filed on Friday, Ms. Pike remaining in a Nashville hospital intubated on a ventilator and unconscious upon arrival, both of Pike's arms were visibly swollen, burned, and blistered. Strata giving some parting words in a statement, writing in part quote, stepping aside is in the best interest of Tennesseans as the independent review moves forward. I believe this review is entirely appropriate and necessary and I look forward to doing everything I can to help determine exactly what occurred. One of Pike's attorneys, Stephen Ferrell, telling CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday's State of the Union, her condition has not changed since the botched execution. She's still in the hospital on a ventilator, critically ill. We don't really know the prognosis yet and may not know for several days. Was she ever conscious after this? Has she been able to say anything? Not that I am aware of, no. On Thursday night, the hospital staff was trying to clear the two doses of Penta Barbertole from her body, were they able to? No, that's still the ongoing process right now. Have the doctors been able to explain at all how she survived these two attempts at execution? They haven't. And I need to emphasize that we are not consulting directly with the doctors. She has a medical power of attorney that gives us information. I'm not sure what all they may have told that person, but this is the extent of what we know. They haven't let you in to see her? No. And she is guarded. I'm not sure who may have seen her. I know I have not seen her. In a joint statement given to various outlets, Pike's attorneys calling strata's resignation, quote, justified, but saying it does nothing to help their client. Now, quote, what happened to her Wednesday reflects a systemic failure that goes far beyond any one person. We hope the governor's call for a full independent review will expose the profound problems within Tennessee's entire death penalty system. On that note, here's Pike's attorney, Farrell, again, on State of the Union. I don't know of any situation where the state says that the execution was carried out exactly as it planned to do and the person survived. And that is a unique situation. With Christa Pike's execution, there was a delay. It was supposed to happen at 10 a.m. in that day and it didn't end up happening till about eight o'clock that evening. We don't know what drugs there were, whether manufactured, compounded, how well they were preserved, what was done with them. That could have played a role. In order to find out what happened, the state of Tennessee has got to start telling its people exactly what it is doing so that in the democratic process, the people of Tennessee can decide if that's what they want to be done in their name. Because this torturous execution leaves so many questions that the state of Tennessee will refuse to answer. We don't know who's performing this. The people who placed the IV lines who obviously were not able to do it successfully or to me, obviously, I don't have definitive answers on what happened. But that caused the drugs to not effectively circulate and that's probably why Christa Pike survived, but the state of Tennessee had assured us that these were people with decades of experience at setting IV lines. US Senator and Frontrunner for Tennessee Governor, Marsha Blackburn, calling Stratas Resignation the right thing to do, saying she will push for further changes in the department if elected in November in an interview with Fox Nashville. Now, you made comments and sent to our station about us switching from lethal injection if you're governor to back to the electric chair as the primary method. That would require legislative action. Is it your sense that state lawmakers would go along with that transition? State lawmakers were talking with me last night and again today about making some changes. What they want to do is to be certain that these these executions are going to be carried out and that they're going to be done successfully and that you're going to bring an end to these failed executions. So looking at the electric chair, looking at what other states are doing with lethal injection. Florida has carried out 19 successful executions this year and they've not had failed or botched executions. If this takes a special session to get it done, let's have a special session and get this done. This is not the state's first stumble with an execution this year. In May, 2026, the state calling off the planned execution of Tony Carruthers, who was convicted of killing three people in 1994. The medical team failing to find a vein to insert the pentabarbital. The governor then granting Carruthers a one-year reprieve while he remains on death row. The governor's office saying an interim commissioner will be announced at a later date. Coming up, the Coast Guard ending its search for those aboard a medical transport flight off the coast of Nantucket after covering thousands of miles. And amid President Trump's push to make daylight savings time permanent, he's calling out one senator in his own party for standing in the way. Imagine this. You're surrounded by fellow fans, sharing wings, drinks, high-fiving random strangers. Everyone remembers the game. No one remembers the guy coughing behind you until a few days later at 2 a.m. when you wake up with a fever and your throat's on fire. Now what, urgent care? Good luck. ER slammed. Telehealth may be, but the pharmacy's closed. That's where a medical emergency kit from the wellness company could come in. These are not first eight kits. They contain essential prescriptions used for over 30 common conditions. Sinous and ear infections, UTIs, stomach bugs, travelers diarrhea and more, on hand before you need them. Use your doctor-developed guidebook to select the right prescription or call their telemed doctor standing by. It's like an urgent care and drugstore at home. That's promo code MK at urgentcarekit.com/MK. The Coast Guard, suspending its search last night for the six passengers aboard a medical transport aircraft that went missing off the coast of Nantucket. It comes nearly a day after a debris field from the flight was found. During a press conference yesterday, officials giving reporters a breakdown of what they know. Here's the Coast Guard's northeast district commander, Rear Admiral Matt Lake. The Coast Guard's response to this incident started approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday when we were notified by the Federal Aviation Administration that they had lost contact with the Gulfstream G-100 aircraft tail number CGRJP. The aircraft had six people on board, four Canadian nationals, and two citizens of Bermuda. During the search, Coast Guard crews were successfully able to locate a debris field that's been now determined to be associated with the missing aircraft. Our search remains ongoing. Coast Guard crews along with our partners from the New York National Guard, their air rescuing, along with Massachusetts authorities have searched approximately 2,840 square miles over about 53 and a half hours. This is a large and demanding search area. Our crews are employing fixed-wing aircraft, helicopter, boats and cutters. The search in the area will continue to evaluate all available information as our operation progresses. The Coast Guard saying the plane lost contact with the FAA in the early morning hours on Saturday, while flying from Bermuda to Boston. The underlying medical condition necessitating the flight was not specified by officials citing privacy concerns. Air traffic control audio posted by liveetc.net capturing what sounds like the pilot reporting electrical problems and declaring an emergency as the jet near the coast. The debris found about 20 miles off Nantucket in water 80-90 feet deep. The rear admiral saying four Canadian citizens and two from Bermuda were aboard the plane. Aviation Attorney and former Transportation Department Inspector General Mary Shavo, calling the debris discovery, bad news, telling the Boston Herald planes don't stay afloat for long. She says radar data suggests the Gulf Stream G100 lost its navigation instruments and dropped from 24,000 feet to 10,000 feet, possibly signaling a cabin pressure or electrical problem. Here's rear admiral Lake when asked about potentially finding the plane's black box. The National Transportation Safety Board says it is gathering information but has not said whether it will formally investigate. President Trump pressuring the Senate to make daylight savings time permanent while zeroing in on one specific senator who he says is holding it up. The change would mean the time zone currently observed from mid-March to early November would stay in effect year-round with no more falling back in November or springing forward in spring. In a truth-social post Saturday, Mr. Trump accusing Republican Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas of single-handedly blocking the Sunshine Protection Act. Cotton has made clear he will stymie and filibuster the bill, which would end the twice-yearly clock change. Others also oppose the bill but they're letting cotton take the heat as the lead blocker for now. The president, even giving out Cotton's personal cell phone number, urging Arcanzans to call him and demand support for the bill. The president writing that golfers, tennis players, hunters and farmers all want more daylight in the evenings to play or work. Mr. Trump writing quote, "Almost everybody wants the Sunshine Protection Act to pass except for Tom Cotton. To the great people of Arkansas, please let your senator know it would be a great bipartisan win for the U.S. Senate and for America itself. Call Tom on his cell phone and let him know." Speaking with quarter Saturday before leaving for Ohio, Mr. Trump doubling down, saying the change would cut crime, reduce car accidents, and ease health problems linked to the clock shift. Right now, we're sitting out here. It's light. It's nice. If you come down here and another three weeks, it'll be dark. It'll be who wants it? We want our sunlight at the middle, but more importantly than that, we don't want to change clocks twice a year. It's very expensive. It's got many problems. Even crime is crazy as it sounds. When you have light, you have much less fun. So the house voted it for than 80%. It's been sitting up there, and hopefully we can get Tom Scott to move. Tom Scott is holding it. He shouldn't be holding it. It's an issue that people want. You know what's it? The farmers want it. You know what it sports wanted, professional sports and amateurs that would like to light tennis at night, would like to play golf a little bit without having to run home after 14 halls. It's ridiculous. Senator cotton responding to the president on X writing quote, no one likes changing the clock. Me included, but Congress has enacted permanent daylight savings time multiple times before and repealed it each time once Americans experienced absurdly late sunrises in the winter. Our Kansans don't want their kids going to school in the pitch dark, and I will always put Arkansas first. Senators from Northern tier states object to the bill because under the change the sun would not rise until nearly 9 a.m. during the dead of winter. Another contingent wants to end the two-time clock changing, but wants to lock the clock on standard time instead, meaning more light permanently in the morning and an early sunset, which some sleep scientists argue would be more consistent with circadian rhythms. This is not the first time Mr. Trump shared a lawmaker's phone number publicly. In 2015, while running for president, Mr. Trump reading late Senator Lindsey Graham's phone number at a campaign rally after Graham called him a jackass on CBS that morning. The House passing a version of the Sunshine Protection Act back in July in a largely barri partisan vote, a push to fast track the bill in the Senate was blocked. The Senate remaining out of session until after the midterms, meaning no vote can happen until they return next month. And that will do it for your A.M. update. I'm Megan Kelly.
