Trump Jokes as Woman Is Beaten at His Rally

Donald Trump's rally in Youngstown, Ohio, was marked by a disturbing mix of absurdity, racism, and violence. He repeatedly and unusually praised Senator John Houston’s physical appearance, claiming his remarks are boosting Houston’s poll numbers—an example of his belief in self-generated political influence. The event also included a violent assault on a protester wearing a "Release the Epstein Files" shirt, which Trump mocked and endorsed, showing a troubling pattern of normalizing violence against dissent. Trump reactivated a racist, false claim that Haitian immigrants were eating pets, dehumanizing a vulnerable community and echoing his history of spreading misinformation. He also promoted a false energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, asserting it existed without evidence, and falsely blamed Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for blocking peace. The rally featured his recurring, anti-Muslim rhetoric against Abdul Al-Sahed, labeling him a jihadist and warning of a "Mogadishu" takeover. Notably, Trump endorsed Max Miller, a congressman accused of domestic abuse, highlighting a political compromise that prioritizes electoral gain over accountability. The speech offered no clear policy vision or forward-looking messaging, instead relying on personal attacks, fear-mongering, and manufactured narratives. This reinforces a broader pattern of Trumpism: emotionally charged, factually reckless, and deeply at odds with democratic norms and public safety.

Hey, everyone, it's me, Sam Stein, manager at The Bull. I'm drummed by Andrew Edgar, author of Morning Shots. And we don't normally do this because there's so many Trump rally speeches. But we wanted to go and record after tonight's speech. It's Monday, October 12th. Trump just finished up a speech. I believe it was in Youngstown, Ohio. And look, like Trump speeches now, we can kind of predict how they're going to go. But this one was both weird. We'll start with a weird funny thing first. And very, very dark for a number of different reasons. xenophobia racism, literally an assault on a protester in the crowd. Trump embracing Max Miller, the embattled congressman who's accused of abusing his wife and kid. There's a lot to unpack. And then even before he took off, before he went to the rally, he took off, he made some news on Russia, Ukraine, that is just baffling that we're going to get into first. But because we want to start with stuff that might not drive you to drink, we're going to go with the funny stuff first. So, Andrew, why don't you set this up? Donald Trump has recently learned a fact about Ohio Senator John Houston, who is up for re-election in a very tight race against Democrat Sheridan Brown. John Gruden, the former NFL head coach and big Trump guy, recently told Trump that Houston is apparently a pretty good former football player himself. He had some success during his previous, I guess, collegiate career. Maybe it's high school, I'm not actually sure which of the two he's talking about. But he's a really good defensive player when he played. And Trump has been so taken by this. He brings it up every time he talks about Houston now, in more and more theatrical and kind of bizarre terms, but never more so than just tonight when he just couldn't let it go. And he brought it up what, like, three different times. Three times. Houston's chiseled physique, and how much you can't keep his eyes off the guy. Houston is in a tight race with Sheridan Brown, which is the entire reason that Trump is there tonight. But that's not the only thing that's tight about Houston, according to Trump. Houston's ass is also quite tight. Let's listen to that. I don't do this with Ben very often. I started examining his body because I didn't know he was a great athlete. And I looked and I watched up and down. I looked at his ass and I looked at the whole. And then I looked at his hands. He's got these claws. And I got it. You are a great athlete. I didn't know that because he doesn't talk about that. Congratulations. Now they finally know. That was very good. And it was John Grooton that told me that we would have never known. All right, so if you thought that that was Trump just riffing, that he wasn't just absolutely thirsting over. John Houston's physique and-- Really? Good look up and down, just really soaking in the man meat there. Those paws, that ass. Well, no. Because Andrew notes this happened two more times. Here he is comparing Houston to a hunk of steel. No, I just hit him on the back. And I hurt my hand a little bit. It's like a piece of steel. You're right about that. Greatest one of the greatest coaches in America. Coach, you're right about that. Just hard as a rock that he stood. And if that wasn't enough, if the ass wasn't just scrumptious, if that back wasn't steely, Trump had a few thoughts on his face, too, which he likes, as you might imagine. Look at that jawline. I'm telling you. I never saw that. I never saw it in him. I know I study him. I say, why would he such a good football? Look at the jawline. He's tough as hell. At some point it gets a little uncomfortable, I guess. My favorite part of all of this in that second clip there was he-- Trump had a couple lines here where he thinks he's this master of branding, right? He thinks he's the best political player. Super intelligent. Yeah, exactly. Ever to have done this, ever to have walked to the earth. And he thinks that John Houston has started improving in the polls ever since he, Trump, started talking about how hot he is and how good of a football player he was at these rallies. He's like, nobody knew about this before because if he didn't know about it before, obviously nobody else did either. I mean, he really does, like in his lizard brain think that him standing on stage and just drooling over the guy is actually having a real impact on his poll numbers against Sherrod Brown. It's, I mean, it's just, it's an amazing little window into several different, very, very different parts of the president's mind at once. In his mind, the women are flocking to John Houston because Trump pointed out how steely and tight his ass is. And certain, and certain, you know, brassy, showtunes curious, you know, real estate tycoon types in Cleveland and Columbus as well. He's central casting. No, Trump does this with a lot of men that he's impressed by the looks. He just blurted at how high he thinks. But have you ever seen him? Like, you're right, he does it a lot. But like, this was a lot even for him. Am I wrong about that? Like, it seemed like he should kept coming back to him. One time, one time was fine. Three times is over the top. Two is you're starting to be like, uh, this is going to be a little weird. And I like that he has to keep going back to like, it was Grootin who told me. Grootin told me this. Okay, Donald, sure. Yeah. All right, look, that was fun. That was like a side shirt to this whole thing because the rally was actually quite gross. A little bit of a disclaimer before we start or a warning, I suppose, to people who are watching this, there was a assault that happened by a protester. In the rally, it was a woman who was wearing a, released the Epstein file shirt. There's been more protests at his rallies recently. If I, maybe I'm just picking up on it more, but it seems like they are getting disrupted more and more regularly now. There's been a couple over the past couple weeks. There had already been a protester who was kind of assaulted while leaving the rally. So I just came up and sucked him. But this one was pretty gruesome. Well, let's watch it. And then I want to pick up on the flip set about just how uncomfortable and awful it is and how un-American it is. So let's watch. (crowd cheering) He's a paid protester, they're all paid. They get paid by the lefties in order to destroy our country, they're scum. But he's going back home to mom. Go back home to mom. He's going back home to mom. Look at him. Look at him. He's terrible. Don't we love Lauren Foresman? Oh, he's got to go on a diet. He's a fat guy. Wow. So Trump thinks it's a man. It's actually a woman. Meanwhile, the guy who punched her is just let right back to his seat. And you can see her shirt says, "Release the Epstein and then Files is on there." This is an assault. This is an actual assault on someone who's exhibiting her first amendment right to protest. And that guy was let right back into the crowd. The crowd cheered it, loved it and Trump absolutely leaned in on it and made fun of her. This is an American to me. Like this does not happen at any other rally. Just doesn't happen. And people protested Biden rallies all the time over Gaza, all the time, multiple people. And no one was assaulting them and no one would buy it and stand for it. And I just find this whole thing grotesque on American. I know this has happened before Trump rallies, but I don't want to get comfortable with it. I find this thing really unsettling, honestly. Yeah, and it's so much at the core of who he is as a politician, right? I mean, if you remember his very earliest rallies, before anybody was even taking him all that seriously as a politician, early in the 2016 cycle, he leaned into this stuff like crazy. I mean, he was constantly reminiscing about the good old days when you could just rough up protesters and nobody would really mind and promising to pay his supporters' legal bills, if they got in any trouble for beating up a protestor. And it was a little bit stick, but like that sort of thing, like the idea that all these busy body rules are now here to restrain us, the good people from really showing them the bad people, really giving them what they deserve. I mean, that's so much at the core of Trump's just kind of lizard brain appeal to a lot of his supporters. And it's true. I mean, you mentioned there have been a lot of protests at these rallies recently. I saw a couple of protesters who were escorted out at the Ohio rally. I was at a week or so ago. There were a lot of them at the San Antonio rally just a few days ago. And in fact, one protestor who was assaulted at that rally, the one other thing I would say about that clip that we just played, I'm not sure whether you could see it in that clip, or whether this was only visible in different angles. But you can see the guy who commits the assault. He kind of gets pushed out of the way by the cop who he calls over. Who, first of all, he's kind of like, yeah, come get her. Like you and me are on the same team to the cop. And the cop doesn't quite treat him that way. He's like, yeah, get out of the way. We're gonna pull her out. But then there's a bikers for Trump guy who comes over and kind of debriefs him and is kind of patting him on the shoulder and like putting him, getting him back in his seat and everything like that. They are also a very weird presence at these rallies because they have this sort of quasi-enforcer role where they're not cops, they're just toughs. Are they just sprinkled throughout the crowd, doing shit like that? >> Well, actually at the rally that I was at, they were mad. They were kind of gathering, sort of congregating outside the press pool because the seats that they were supposed to have, they didn't have for them at that time. So I don't know what the usual thing is. But that guy was right on hand. He kind of seemed like he came up the aisle. They're just sort of like pro-Trump, like kind of Wild West enforcers here where like you're certainly not there to protect protesters. They're just there to kind of keep things a little bit in hand. >> Yeah, I just want to recap because I think it's worth stressing. A woman probably. it's a Trump and a man assaulted her. - Pretty violently. - Yeah, violently. And rather than Trump saying something like, "Hey, don't do that. Score it out or hey, don't do that." She has a right, but she should get out. He cheered it on and then he also called her fat. It's so gross and awful, uncomfortable too. Right, like it's inviting violence. It's cheering on violence. And yeah, it sucks. I just sucks to watch that. So it was upset by that. But that wasn't the only thing that made me upset. So they're in Ohio. Obviously this is a state that played a fairly symbolic role in 2024 precisely because it was there that Trump and JD Vance accused the Haitian community on TPS protections in Springfield of eating cats and dogs a vicious lie that dehumanized them and led to a lot of problems for the community for obvious reasons, then ultimately the spring core rule that Trump could, in fact, pull their TPS protection status. As everyone knows, we went to Springfield for a fundraiser for them. We met members of the community. Wonderful people. Very scared right now about what's happening because a lot of people still believe the lie. So Trump's there in Ohio tonight and he just plows right back into it. Let's watch. - Little idyllic place. All of a sudden they dropped 35,000 people in from Haiti and it didn't work out too well. Remember during the debate, I said some of the things I was doing, I was right. Tired that I was right. I won't get into the exact, remember that? I was right. - What a coward. I mean, if you're gonna do it, just say what you said, what a coward. Secondly, he's wrong on two fronts. One is, it was not an idyllic town prior to the Haitian showing up as a dead town. The Haitians helped revitalize it. So wrong on that kind of then wrong. And the fact that people are grateful for this. I would say by my, you know, estimations to our own folks there, 75, 25 people are against what's happening by Trump. And the removal TPS status, they feel like it's gonna hurt the community. So wrong on both those counts. But classic Trump, this message is sponsored by him. So let's be honest, trying to lose weight can feel like a constant cycle of setting goals, trying to stick to a plan. And getting frustrated when you're not seeing the results you want, that's especially true for fathers of young kids out there. You know, those chicken tenders just are so inviting when they're left over on your kid's plate. And let's not start with the french fries, just gonna down those if the kids don't finish them. Well, that's where weight loss by him comes in. Him's offers access to range of FDA-approved GLP-1 medications, including the WagoV pill. Everyone already knows this. But like the thing he's claiming to be right about, he was not right about either. You know, that's just him rehearsing that. He's rehearsing the very unique dogs. They're eating the cats. That was the line he was referring to from the debate. This completely racist, completely insane, completely hallucinated lie that these people are like subhuman savages who have brought their third world ways to Springfield, Ohio. And they're going from neighborhood to neighborhood abducting beloved family pets so they can grill them up on the George Foreman. You know, like it never happened. It was a lie then. No one has ever substantiated it. And so for him to bring that specific bit of it back up, just the icing on the cake of this entire insane like post-truth thing that he does, every time he opens his mouth on this. Arguably the most pernicious lie. This one just cuts the core of nasty, of human nastiness, I feel like. Yeah, not great. No, good analysis there. Not great, I agree with you. Not great, stop doing it. There are other moments here. He's in Ohio, but he's campaigning for candidates in Michigan and Minnesota as well. I didn't get to see all the speech, but it seemed like he's been a fair bit of time talking about Abdul Al-Sahed. This was kind of the amazing thing. It's like he's going from place to place to place to place to place and there are like little bits of like place specific campaigning in all of them. But at the same time, he like does these recurring bits like he tells Texas voters why they should not elect Abdul Al-Sahed and then he tells Ohio voters why they should not elect Abdul Al-Sahed. These are recurring bits that he does over and over again. And it's also the case that he has a few things that he's talking about about how his administration is doing well, but it's mostly excuses for why it's not better on the one hand. And then just a bunch of doom-saying about why they should fear Democrats getting back into power on the other hand. And Abdul Al-Sahed obviously features very heavily into this because he repeatedly calls him a jihadist and repeatedly says he's essentially trying to bring, he didn't use the phrase Sharia law, but like that he's trying to bring radical Islam into power in America. >> The quote is turn the Midwest into Mogadishu or something like that. >> Yes, he did say that. And he had one of those very characteristic pauses. Turn the Midwest into Mogadishu before he reads it off the prompter. He's like, how am I going to say this exactly? But yes, there was an extended digression about jihadist in his term Abdul Al-Sahed. I feel like the stick is getting a little thin. There was a couple of the characters there that may have surprised folks. Max Miller, congressman from Ohio, who is persona non-grata for normal people, but the Republican leadership is fine with him, apparently. Again, this man is credibly accused of assaulting his wife and who is Bernie Moreno's daughter, the Snacks wife. And what was the exact thing he did to his daughter? I guess he like, she like, shouldn't put like a broken collarbone or something. >> Yeah, the allegations against the daughter were never as like thoroughly substantiated as the ones against the wife. I mean, there was a lot of chatter, a lot of like, oh man, this doesn't look good type stuff about yes, a broken collarbone, the daughter had sustained. There were accusations that she was afraid to go to his house. >> He didn't return her toy. >> Yeah, I didn't return that toy. A lot of just sort of weird family court drama stuff in that where it did not look good for Max Miller at all. But the craziest thing about all of this is that one of the loudest people making these allegations when that story was in the headlines a couple of months ago was Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno, who I was interested to see when I was, again, when I was at that Vandalia rally last weekend, I think it was just last weekend, it's weird that Trump's already back in Ohio, by the way, it was literally last weekend, he was there. But at that rally, Moreno spoke, and it was like, okay, Max Miller's not here. Like he was not in the building, that was kind of notable. I guess they buried the hatchet. I guess they're like content to appear on the same sort of dais, or like in the same sort of like VIP section. Now at this rally, two months after Bernie Moreno is telling reporters about how his daughter has to co-parent with this man and fears every second that their daughter is in his custody and that he's turned her life into hell. And I mean, it's just really surreal that the Ohio GOP has somehow papered over this whole scandal. It's agreed, you know, we need the seat. Let's just not let this drama impact anything too much. I was surprised that Moreno showed up, given how aggressive he was about sticking up for his daughter just a few months ago. - I mean, Max Miller made the right calculation in a way. I mean, Max Miller was being pushed to get out of the race and he said, nah, I'm gonna just stick around. And Heron and that was that these people will come around 'cause they care more about the seat. And I think he held up Trump as the template to follow from the Axis Hollywood tape as if that's like some virtue. - Yeah, what a tighten of virtue, yeah. - I know. His calculation was these are craving political beings and they'll come around. And if I'm on the ticket, they'll be fine with me. And he was right. - Yeah, but I just can't get over like, why is Moreno even there? He's not even up for re-election. Like he has no reason why he has to like be kind on front of himself in this way. - Well, they all gonna do United Front stuff 'cause that's all that matters. - It's so strange. - It's strange. Anyways, let's play Trump kind of cheering on Max Miller being in the building. - Everybody needs to get out and vote for Vivek. And also, you need to get out and vote. And we elect for Congressman Mike Rooley. (crowd cheering) And Congressman Max Miller who is here. Thank you, Max, for coming. Thank you. Very good. Thank you. - I will notice this little less more tepid applause for Miller. - Yeah, that's true. - If you look at the people behind him. - Yeah, look at you. - Sure, man, I'm Max. Yeah, I could go for it. - All right, anything else from the rally before I switch back to the pre-Rally stuff? - I already said this, but there is not a positive vision on display in these rallies. He does not come to them to make a case. He does like a few half-baked stats about how the economic graph is going up into the right. Like it always does. He does a little bit of shtick about how Mohammed bin Salman said that America's in its golden age now and it was in the dark age under Biden. And then it's just grievances and Democrats. fear mongering and like anecdotes. And that's it, there just is not a pitch for why voters should expect anything other than what they're getting right now, other than we're gonna win the war in Iran, and that's gonna bring prices down. And I'm just kind of shocked when I see this at the rallies, that there is so little of an actual through line of like what, they have no vision. Like they're not conjuring up anything for their own voters to get excited about and get behind. And that's, I mean, that's a big part of why you see this enthusiasm gap that we see today. - There was one thing that I told voters to get excited about and get behind. John Houston's ass. - Everybody get behind it. Yeah, take a good, take a big, long look. - Go excited and get behind it. - Oh my lord. He should have brought him up on stage and made him like do a slow turn, you know? - Come on, John. - Yeah. - Do a little 360. Give the crowd what it wants. All right. (laughing) Sorry, you said that up really well. All right. (laughing) Bri Raleigh, Bri Raleigh Trump did make some new stuff. Backstay here is over the weekend or I guess Friday, forget all these plans. Trump decides we're gonna buy Russian oil again, Russian diesel. Not great. No one seems to be on board with this, but Trump, and he's defended it. And he's defended it by saying that Zelensky doesn't want to deal and that they need to make a deal. And Zelensky's like, I don't know what you're talking about. Then there was some Trump declared over the weekend that they had an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine never was sort of like really? I mean, that could be good. Like, let's stop bombing each other's energy grids and refineries. Like, let's just, that could be a first step. And then within like an hour, I was like, wait a second, the Ukrainians and the Russians have no clue what he's talking about. I think he just made this up. Then Zelensky went on the Sunday shows. He's like, I don't know what he's talking about. We're happy to do it. Yeah, they're Russian keeps bombing, keep got hit overnight. It's clear that there's no ceasefire. So Trump, you know, he was asked about this and in spectacular fashion, more or less in the most Trumpian way, it makes that he just was full of shit. So let's play Trump saying, what was the basis for him declaring that there had been a greed upon ceasefire? It's a birthday of a ceasefire. It's a birthday of Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire. Both sides say they have not agreed to that. Well, they agreed, you know why? Because I said you agreed. That's why they agreed because I said they agreed. So that's not technically how agreements work. Technically. Yeah, yeah, you know, if you want to get really technical, you know, if you want to be an egghead about it, no, it didn't happen. It's, I mean, like, I guess the only way you can even make sense of it as a move is like this is maybe another one of these market manipulation things where he's trying to just sort of like get, get one more hit to, to oil futures or something like that out of relief that supposedly this ceasefire exists even though it doesn't. But like every time Donald Trump gets on the phone with Vladimir Putin, his entire Ukraine policy just changes immediately to whatever Putin wants. And then they have to sort of slowly pull him back to like something, some more semblance of balance on this. So they had a long phone call on Friday. That's where, you know, this supposed deal to buy Russian diesel came out of even though Trump himself just signed this big sanctions bill on Russian oil a couple of weeks ago. That is all going on, right? And Trump is like parroting, you know, pro Putin talking points about how really is the Lensky's the obstacle to the, to the energy ceasefire here, even though the Lensky is the one who has said, I welcome this if you can just get Russia to agree. And then you, you, you layer that on on to just the, the bewildering like level of hubris and, just sort of self-centered ego mania of him being able to say, like what matters in there being an energy ceasefire is not that these two combatants actually stop launching missiles and bombs at one another's energy infrastructure. That's just some stuff that's happening on the other side of the world. What's important is that I, the God Emperor of reality, have declared that an energy ceasefire exists now. And so it's there and why are you at, why are you asking me about it? Like quit bothering me. I mean, it's crazy the place this guy thinks he occupies in world history. I mean, the power he thinks he has to just speak these things into existence. - Yeah, he wants to manifest itself into existence, but it's like a little bit like maybe one turn away from Michael Scott of the office declaring bankruptcy. It's like, I had to declare bankruptcy. It's not really how it works. - Didn't just say it, I declared it, you know. He's clearly just sowing on Lensky. And I do think it really is. Trump and his loser brain head has been convinced that, well, they're bombing the refineries. Ergo, the cost of diesel is high because of Lensky. You can't possibly imagine that it's the war in Iran that's contributing this. So he's now basically committed to screwing over Lensky. And so the real tell came later in that stakeout before he boarded to go to Ohio where he claims that Putin wants to deal more. Even as Pooin has launched more tax in Kiev, listen to this. - Where do you see his willingness to make a deal when he's striking his reins like he said? - I think they're going to make a deal. I think actually Putin wants to make a deal more than to Lensky. - Bullshit. Just completely, he's confronted with a piece of information. Actually, Russia's bombing Ukrainian infrastructure right now. Like that's happening right now. Ukraine's not doing it to Russia right now. Ukraine is the thing that Ukraine is saying right now is, sure, energy ceasefire sounds great. Can you get Russia to agree to that? And Russia is telling President Trump, "Oh man, I would love to have a deal "if really you just let this Lensky guy get out of the way." But Russia's the one who's doing the bombing and Trump just does not let that fact penetrate his mind. He just brushes it off like it's nothing. It's the only thing that matters. And like it doesn't even enter into his mental calculations here because he had this really nice phone call on Friday with Putin and they brought out and they got along and Putin really just, you know, he get, they get each other. You know, they really just, as world leaders, they really know how it is. They know how it works. And so he's just, again, he's just lost to the world for another week or so here until, well, I don't know. I was gonna say until somebody on our side gets in his ear and sort of pulls him back the other way, but I guess that used to be Lindsey Graham's job. So I don't actually know who is actually capable of doing that for the president now. So I guess maybe that's one place that we should really miss Lindsey Graham and all this. So who knows? - That's a really valid point. It was Graham who was always the one pulling him back and they don't have that person now. - Darling, I'll do it. She'll get in there. - I'm sure she will. I'm not holding my breath. All right, buddy, we've taken up a lot of time here in a Monday night. We got to pace ourselves. And we got three weeks of this, you know. So there was only so much John Houston asked coverage we can do, but we're gonna fit it in there. - I do it again. - I'm fired up. - Next time he goes to Ohio. I guess he's doing one in Ohio a week. Apparently this is the new pace. - Let's make this a rule. - Let's make this a rule between you and me. Anytime Trump openly covets a male senator's ass at a rally, we'll have to do a take on it, okay? - There can't be that many. - What do you put the over under for how many more time? Let's put aside the asses. How many more times in the next three weeks is Trump gonna salivate over a male politician? I'm gonna put it at, I will guess five. - Okay, I'll take the under. Not counting John Houston. Are we setting John Houston aside? He will 100% bring John Houston specifically out. - No, I'm just saying, it could be Houston. I'm not saying he has five separate politicians. I'm just saying five times. Like tonight would have been three, okay? - Oh, okay. I guess I'll still take the under, but you're probably, you probably get me on that. - In the comments, let us know folks, whether you take the over under on five. Oh wait, before we go, Atlanta, in Georgia, you should be shamed yourself. Buy tickets to our show. You're the ones who hasn't sold out. - I'm going there. It can be look bad. I mean, it can be look less cool than like Will Summer and Catherine Rampell, who have their shows have all sold out, but Atlanta apparently nobody wants to come hang. - Correlation or causation here. Atlanta, show up. It's on October 20th at the Easter and you can get it at borg.com/events. Get those tickets out. We're actually getting close to sell out. So you should rush and get the tickets. We gotta do it before October 20th. You get to see Andrew, you get to see Bill, you get to see me, JVL, Tim. You get to see Sarah, you get to see Mark Hurtling. I was gonna say Hurtling. It's gonna be great. Those shows are a blast. So go to the borg.com/events for your tickets. Remember, we also have a 30% off deal on our substack right now. So if you want to be a borg subscriber and we're always putting it off, well, now's the time to do it. 30% off at the borg. All right, buddy, take care, man. - See ya.
