Trump Cancels Execution Livestream & Foreign Doctors Spark Safety Concerns? | 10.16.26

President Trump has reversed his plan to live-stream the execution of Fort Hood suspect Nadal Hassan, citing public backlash and polling data showing widespread opposition. The decision follows criticism from religious leaders and concerns about the appropriateness of such a public execution in modern America. Meanwhile, a growing number of foreign-trained medical professionals are entering U.S. hospitals through visa programs, raising alarms among American doctors over patient safety due to skill gaps, poor English proficiency, and outdated medical exams. A new study by psychologist Jean Twenge reveals a sharp decline in teenage identification as LGBTQ, especially among 14-15 year olds, with a drop from 17% to 11% among ninth graders—highlighting a shift not clearly tied to political changes. In a separate incident, a shooting at an Oregon elementary school killed three children and one teacher before the suspect was fatally shot by a bystander. On a more positive note, consumer-focused tools like Jerry and ZipRecruiter help users save time and money, while brands like Quince and Jack Archer offer affordable, high-quality apparel. The segment blends breaking news, cultural trends, and product features, reflecting Daily Wire’s mix of current affairs and lifestyle content.

President Trump announced the anticipated execution of Fort Hood terrorist Nadal Hassan will no longer be live-streamed. Here with more is our White House correspondent Mary Margaret Olihan. Thanks for coming on. Thanks for having me. So this proposed live stream has caused a lot of controversy, and we'll get to that. But to start, can you remind our audience what Nadal Hassan did in the first place to be, you know, on death row? Yeah, so this guy was an army psychiatrist who unfortunately opened fire in 2009 on his fellow citizens and soldiers, killing 13 people and wounding, I believe, more than 30 others. He subscribed to radical Islamist beliefs and was trying to kill people out of concerns of protecting his Muslim brethren over in the Middle East. And that was why he committed this act of terror. It's commonly remembered as the Fort Hood massacre, and it took place in Texas. So really tragic incident and something that he is known to be a terrorist for. Now, we know the live stream has been canceled now, according to Trump's latest announcement. But the execution is still supposed to happen on schedule. What prompted Trump to reverse Hegs' announcement? You know, are the two still in lockstep or does this signal some sort of division? Well, yes. So President Trump announced yesterday that they were canceling the live stream, and this had caused a lot of controversy because there were plenty of people who actually, I would say, agree with the president on many things that were still troubled by the prospect of this live stream. Catholic bishops, for example, had said this is not a proper use or a proper way for America to show its might. This is actually the kind of thing that barbaric nations do. And so there were plenty of people who had argued that this was really inappropriate to live stream an execution in 2026. Now, you also have people who were saying that this was a good thing, that it would intimidate our enemies, and it would intimidate people from committing similar acts. And the president said that himself yesterday, he said, I do think this would have shown other countries that we mean business and shown our enemies that this is what will happen if they try and commit such acts of terror. But he agreed that this was just not an appropriate move. So I think there's a lot of people, especially religious Americans, who might rest easier now knowing that this was not something the administration was promoting. How much did polling play into President Trump's decision to cancel this? As a country, we're roughly divided on the death penalty, but the polling showed about 80% of Americans did not want it to be live streamed. Did the president see those polls and make a decision based on that? Well, he would probably tell you the polls had nothing to do with it. But I think that you could also make quite a good argument that they did. Look, the president and his team, they do pay attention to polls. We know that from much of our reporting over the last several years, even before the president took office. So absolutely, the White House pays attention to these polls. They understand the importance of paying attention to American sentiment and on this issue, I think we can all agree the public was not ready for a live streamed execution. So it will not be happening. We also have the election, of course, coming up less than three weeks now. I am sure that was a factor. Does that seem to be, you know, buzz on the ground, a major factor playing into this? This is sort of a distraction maybe for the president and the GOP. Yeah, I think many people would probably agree that at this point in time, if there's something that's this unpopular and is causing so much controversy, not necessary to lean into it. But I should also note, John and Georgia, that Vice President Vance, right after it was announced that this execution would be live streamed, Vice President Vance very quickly threw cold water on it by saying that he would not be watching it. And he suggested that it might not even take place. So I think that was kind of a quick signal from Vance who, you know, a reporter had asked him if he was planning to watch it as a Catholic. Vance had really signaled very quickly that he had no interest in that and that he wasn't sure if it would even take place. And I think that was on board necessarily and there would be further conversations. All right. So as we said, this is still scheduled to take place at the same time and place. Remind us again, what is the date that this is going to take place in time? Yeah, so he's scheduled to be executed on December 3rd at 1 p.m. And Pete Hegseth has said that this will take place at the exact same time that the Fort Hood shooting took place in 2009 to commemorate that day. Well, a horrific attack and what turned out to be a pretty polarizing initial announcement that the president has now reversed. Mary Margaret, thank you so much for coming on. Now, I've discussed this sweater before. It's new from Quince last spring and it's so lovely. It is so soft and cozy, but it also has a great weight to it. And it's just one of many cashmere sweaters from Quince that are amazing and I love. And if you haven't tried them yet, there's a reason Quince cashmere sweaters are extremely viral. In terms of quality and price, you absolutely cannot beat the value. They start at around fifty dollars with heavier weight sweaters like this one topping at around one hundred and fifty. And I'm also a huge fan of their leather jackets and winter accessories. They even have shearling jackets, which is very impressive. And Quince is able to offer high quality items for 50 to 80 percent less than designer labels because they partner with the same ethical factories, but then sell direct to customers at a fraction of the cost. Training for December marathon has been some pretty early mornings lately. I'm talking five a.m. runs when it's still dark outside and over the coming weeks, the fall temperatures are really going to start to kick in. So I've been on the lookout for some comfortable gear to get me through the next couple of months. And that's what really got me interested in our new partner, Jack Archer. I ordered the range joggers, which should arrive in a couple of days. And I'm really excited to see what's going to happen. And I'm really excited to see what's really going to happen. And I'm really looking forward to trying them out because they're made with a soft, stretchy performance fabric that's designed to move with you, whether you're warming up, traveling or just taking it easy. But Jack Archer makes a lot more than high end joggers. We tend to dress pretty stylish and business casual around the daily wire offices. So I've also been checking out the wrinkle resistant stain repellent jet setter tech pants. So whether I'm sitting at the desk, catching a flight or heading straight to dinner, I will look put together without sacrificing comfort. And that's what I appreciate about Jack Archer. Residents are sounding the alarm over foreign trained doctors entering US hospitals through visa programs, warning that hospitals pursuit of cheaper labor could come at the expense of their money. Jack Archer is offering our listeners 15% off your fence of patient safety. Here with the details is Daily Wire reporter Amanda Prestige Acoma. So, Amanda, we discussed on this show the growing use of H-1B and J-1 visa programs in the medical system, and now you have talked to some concerned doctors who are experiencing this firsthand. What did they tell you? Well, they told me they're really concerned about patient safety. I spoke to doctors who are training to be surgeons in Tennessee, and while they described older immigrant doctors as great mentors and highly qualified, they said some of these newer residents appear dangerously unprepared. Now, one resident said that he is literally spending every shift keeping a fellow resident from killing Tennesseans accidentally. He added that he's experienced a bunch of near misses. Now, when it comes to credentials, there have been a number of cheating scandals in other countries. The U.S. MLE is the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam, and you have to pass this to obtain a medical license. It's administered worldwide for doctors who want to practice in the U.S. In 2024, there was a WhatsApp group leaking upcoming test questions in Nepal, and that resulted in a shockingly high-scoring cohort, actually the highest in the world that year. Those students' scores were invalidated, and, you know, the fact remains that a lot of countries have far less secure testing when it comes to this U.S. MLE. Many countries take this test still on pen and paper. And there was also a separate case involving alleged fake medical credentials in India. The doctors I spoke to also warned about how this test is very outdated in some other countries, and we're talking about a 10-year-old test. So even an honest student there, they're going to be 10 years behind in medical knowledge. Now, the doctors you've spoken to, are they actually seeing substantial knowledge gaps in their peers? Yeah, they say this is very prevalent. They told me that there have been instances where these residents didn't recognize medications they were attempting to prescribe, they ordered the wrong drugs, or struggled with procedures in a way that someone could have been injured if it hadn't been for a more senior doctor stepping in. There was also a gap they saw with technological proficiency. They said that some residents really struggle with electronic systems. One resident told me, quote, Wow. So what about English language proficiency? What level of English do you need to practice here? Yeah, so medical residents in the U.S., they have to meet proficiency levels for English, but they don't have to be proficient in English. So they don't have to be proficient in English. But these doctors told me that the bar is probably not high enough because they're seeing some grads struggle to explain basic treatment plans with patients, communicate with nurses, or coordinate with lab or imaging personnel. So it's a communication breakdown, not just with the patient, but also on the back end with medical personnel. And they stress that these errors, they're typically just not going to happen with American residents. Now, you previously reported on here that some hospitals are recruiting almost 100% foreign-trained resident doctors. Why are they choosing them if they come with some of these challenges and risks? Well, I mean, there's the obvious financial incentive here. Some of these doctors are going to accept lower pay than an American doctor would. Some hospitals are also using residency programs to fill staffing gaps. Medicare helps fund residency positions. And residents can sometimes do up to three times the work of some physician assistants or nurse practitioners while earning less than half of what they make. Also, this was very interesting. The doctors I spoke to really challenged this narrative that there's such a big doctor shortage that we need to be recruiting abroad, particularly when it comes to staffing rural hospitals. For one thing, they argued that medical schools are failing to recruit qualified students from rural communities who, you know, they say are more likely to return home to practice, even if that means accepting a slightly lower salary. So how does this tie in, you know, with this larger crackdown on H-1B visas from the U.S. and the U.S. government? After years of increases, new data finds a steep drop-off in teens identifying as LGBTQ. The reversal is especially pronounced among girls, and it's prompting a debate over what's driving the change. Daily Wire culture reporter Megan Basham joins us now with the details. So Megan, where did this study actually come from? Yeah, Georgia, so this study comes from Jean Twenge, and she's a psychology professor at San Diego State University. And she's also the real differences between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, and Silence. Now, what she did was she examined the CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey, and that started asking high school students about how they describe their sexual orientation, starting back in 2015. Now, from that point through 2021, the share of teens that were identifying as lesbian, gay, or bisexual continued to rise but after 2021, that's when it started to fall. So here's what Twenge told me. You really see the big change between 2023 and 2025 in those identifying as LGB. And what's interesting in this case is there's not a lot of change among the 12th graders, 17 to 18 years old. There's a much larger change among the youngest students in the survey. So the 14 and 15-year-olds who are in ninth grade, there's a much larger change among in identifying as lesbian, gay, or bisexual. Now, she added that the increase in identifying as bisexual was always much larger among girls and boys. So the decline has therefore also been much larger among girls and boys. But the numbers really are pretty stark here. So among ninth graders, overall, identification as lesbian, gay, or bisexual fell through. And that's because the from 17% in 2023 to only 11% in 2025. So, you know, nearly cut in half. And much of that is bisexual orientation, which among those same ninth grade girls was cut in half from 26% in 2021 to 13% in 2025. So Twenge described all of this as when she looked at the younger teen, their pattern, she said it looks like a free fall. Yeah. Now, there's been a lot of speculation about the role of LGBTQ identification, particularly with transgender identification. Did Twenge connect this downward trend to any larger cultural or political shifts? Well, you know, she told me, John, that it's very hard to pinpoint because one thing she noted was that along with being concentrated among girls and younger teens, it also didn't impact the full array of LGBTQ identification equally. She said that this was specifically about the L, the G, and the B, fewer teens identifying as lesbian, gay, and bisexual, and not so much about trans, where she didn't really see that much movement in the numbers. But to those who suggested, as you did, that maybe a change in political power impacted that, she said she's not sure because she saw these trends starting before the end of the Biden administration. And, you know, she made a reasonable point that if these trends were based on national politics, why would it be impacting young people? And she said, so much more than older teens. Megan, thanks for reporting. Yep, my pleasure. Another story we're tracking, tragedy struck the city of Bend, Oregon on Thursday. A shooter opened fire at an elementary school before being shot dead by an armed bystander. At least three children and one adult were killed in the shooting, which took place at Silver Rail Elementary School. Local police held a press conference yesterday in which they provided some of the tragic details. Officers at the scene, located five people who had succumbed to their injuries, including the suspect. The deceased at the scene include three children, ages five, eight, and 11, and one teacher. One seven-year-old child and one 54-year-old teacher were transported by Bend Fire to St. Charles Bend with critical injuries. Law enforcement says the 16-year-old male suspect's rampage was cut short by an armed civilian with a concealed carry permit. A responding officer says the good submitter was shot dead at the scene.
