We talk about our favorite things in the world, movies and movie news tv and streaming and all that good stuff. I'm joined today, of course, by writer, director, producer, living legend, Robert Meyer Bernette. Robert, how you doing, sir? I sure am not a living legend just in my own mind. It counts. It counts. No caveats. No asterisks. And of course, also joining us, the legend of Burbank himself, Jonathan Boyko is here. That's right. How is everybody? Hopefully you guys didn't have technical difficulties. Yeah, we had some technical difficulties getting the show started, but we did get the show started and here we are. And most importantly, of course, you guys are here. We're going to start off by talking about a number of pre-determined topics we got lined up for you guys. Shall we? We're going to start off with this. You know, I really enjoyed true detective. And you know, one of the great things about true detective was, of course, this wild, you know, uncharacteristic, unexpected chemistry between Matthew McConaughey and Will D. Harrelson. Now, in the year since they've done a couple of other things, including like an entire ad campaign, several ad campaigns they've done together. Now, look, a little while ago, we heard that they were going to be doing a new project called brothers that they would be appearing in together. And the trailer for brothers has now come out. And I got to say, it's pretty great. I mean, I've been looking forward to seeing this because it's Matthew McConaughey and it's Woody Harrelson. And I heard that they're going to be playing themselves in it. But the trailer offered a conceit that I really enjoyed and I can't wait to see this. This is what the folks over coming soon had to say. Apple TV has just released the official trailer for the highly anticipated comedy series, Brothers, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. The video promises absolute joy ride as long time pals take viewers on a grand family adventure. Brothers, premieres in Apple TV on Wednesday, September the 23rd. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play fictionalized versions of themselves. The actors are also the creators of the series alongside Lee Eisenberg and David West Read. The show follows two friends who decide to live together with their families at McConaughey's Texas Ranch. Furthermore, they uncover a family secret that they might actually be biological brothers. Look, ever since I think it was Neil Patrick Harris, I'm sure it happened before then guys, but I think it might have been when Neil Patrick Harris was in, uh, what was it called? Errol and Kumar go to White Castle. Yeah, when he kind of played himself, I'm sure it's happened before that, but that was my first real time recognizing like a celebrity playing themselves. But one of the great recent examples of that, Keona Reeves and always be my maybe. If you have not seen always be my maybe, what's that Rob? Oh, I just, you know, there's other movies where a celebrity might have played themselves. Oh, that's right. Yes. Yes. Yes. William Shatner might have done it, uh, might have done it before, uh, in a little movie that Robert Meyer Bernette may have directed. And John Melchovich too. And may have had a couple of other big stars in it. Uh, yeah, John Melchovich did it with being John Melchovich. But so I really do like the idea. I always have fun with it. Is it a little overplayed? Yes. But when you get two guys who just in real life have the types of personalities that Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey have, it's, it just kind of lends itself to it. It just absolutely lends itself to it. And I love the notion of it. Absolutely. I've met both these guys. I actually spent a little bit of time with Woody Harrelson. And the dude is absolutely hilarious. He's really funny. I love these guys chemistry together. I even just love this image of the two. And again, I even just love their commercials. Like whatever that commercial is that they do where they're constantly running into each other. I love those commercials. See, that's how much I love the commercial. I can't even remember the brand that they're representing. He's just like them. It's just them. I just like them in the commercials. Yeah. Anyway, Rob, you had a chance to see the trailer for Brothers. What did you think about it? Well, the same thing as you. I mean, I, I think it was delightful, you know, and I, I love these two guys together when I see them. You know, one of the things that inspired us to even make free enterprise was the Saturday night live sketch from the 80s, the very famous sketch with Shatner being at a Star Trek convention and telling all the conventioneers. You have a touch to girl. Yeah, that, that. And what was so, what was so interesting about that, it was both a send up, but that it was also very truthful. And we kind of ran with that concept because especially now, John and this day and age in Jonathan, where celebrities have a social media presence, you, you, you, you peel behind the curtain. What's real and what's not real is the line is so blurred that playing with this, this notion, because people have talked about that in public for a while, you can have a lot of fun with it. And it becomes, you know, this meta narrative. And I like, I like the idea that the audience always wonders, no, wait a minute. Is there a truth? Is, is any of this true? And I think it really, it's a new, it's a new kind of viewing experience. And when, when you have celebrities, two guys are going to lean heavily into it. Sure. And so I, just for, just because I've always loved the two of them, but to see them together on camera, I think is a match made in heaven. And I can only imagine it's wildly entertaining. Yeah, I mean, even that, even that like quick little scene in the trailer where it seems like Matthew's trying to like, you know, build his confidence up. So what does he do? He goes to his character from Wolf of Wall Street and he starts hitting his chest. Oh, yeah, he's been. I want to know what this scene is all about where like they say, you live with three women and you don't understand women. That's, I want to know more about that whole scene. Well, it looks like there is indeed a Robocop series coming from Amazon. We've heard about this for a while, but I'll be honest with you, deep down in my heart of hearts, I didn't think they would actually come to fruition. I really didn't think they were even going to do it. Even though they kept saying it was moving forward, developing, they started adding all these people, I really didn't think think was going to happen, but I guess it really is because now they've got their star. According to this report in Variety, Dan Stevens, who I love Dan Stevens, has been cast to play the lead role in the upcoming Amazon Robocop series. This is what Variety says. Dan Stevens is set for the title role in the Robocop TV series at Amazon Prime Video Variety has confirmed. The show was originally announced in July at the streamer. Prime Video has given the show an eight episode order. The project has been in development since Amazon acquired MGM in 2022 with Amazon looking to capitalize on their access to MGM's deep IP library for both film and television projects. As per the log line, a giant tech conglomerate convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force, a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved fallen officer to be played by Dan Stevens. Stevens broke out with his role in the hit British series Downton Abbey with the actor going on to start and critically claim show a Legion at effects. His other TV roles include solar opposites, zero day and the upcoming third season of AMCs, the terror. He's also set to be a series regular role in the upcoming second season of Dexter Resurrection, which I cannot wait to see him in. In film, he recently starred in Godzilla X, Kong, New Empire, and is known for features like the live action beauty in the beast Eurovision. He was really good in Eurovision. The story of Fire Saga and Kuku and how could they leave out Abigail? Loved him in Abigail. Dan Stevens is going to play Robocop. I've got two different thoughts about this. On the one hand, they cast a hell of an actor. They just really, he was great in Downton Abbey. He was great in Legion. He was great in Abigail. He just, I mean, even like like or not like the live action beauty in the beast, which I think overall, it's that's not a bad movie. It's not a bad movie. It just doesn't live up anywhere near to the animated, but still he was really, he gave a great performance in it. He really did. And I love him in Eurovision. And I just think he's versatile and great. And again, I loved him in Abigail, but that leads me to the second batch of thoughts, which is in 2026. Does a Robocop series make sense? I mean, and I'm not even saying that because, oh, it's been so long since we had Robocop. That's not what I mean. I don't even mean it in the sense that it was what 2014, 2015 that we had that remake, which again, by the way, I didn't think the reboot was all that bad. I thought Michael Jackson was great in it. I mean, it paled in comparison to the original, but as its own movie in and of itself, I thought it wasn't bad, but regardless, my question about it, guys, is in a world today where we actually have people getting technology implants, in a world today where we have lots of fiction with that sort of thing, because when Robocop came out, sure, we had the $6 million man, but then it was kind of a new thing, like one of the most popular video games that Anne's playing right now of the last bunch of years, the Cyberpunk, right? It's the whole thing. So does this even a conceit of the consciousness of a guy put into a piece of technology? Is that even something that plays today? I don't know. I guess it would argue it's the most timely thing you could do right now. Really, even though it's kind of being overdone? Well, and look at the economic state that Detroit and the United States was in the story of Robocop, right? And our struggles with keeping our jobs against AI and I'm saying the backdrop, it links directly to a lot of what we're dealing with now. I would say if you can play into those pair into that paranoia and into the reality, not just the paranoia, it could be very apropos for today. I just wonder if they're going to take a completely different approach to it. You know, just take it a completely different approach and give it a new type of narrative. I mean, I don't know. Look, look, Amazon's made a lot of really good shows. And so I will definitely check it out. And they just did a great piece of casting with Dan Stevens. I'm just saying I, I, I'm not going to pretend like I'm excited for the idea of another Robocop at this point. Anyway, Rob, I know as somebody who is a big appreciator of the original Robocop and even some of its subsequent follow-ups, what do you think about the casting? I guess it's two separate questions here. What do you think about the casting of Dan Stevens? And what do you think about the conceit for the show as a whole? Well, at first, look, there's a couple of things Dan Stevens was in that I adore, like Legion, obviously. Yeah. And a movie called The Guest, where the guest is really good. And he, like you said, John, he's an incredibly versatile actor, really engaging. And there's a chameleon-like quality to him. I mean, on one hand, he can play the every man, but like in the guest he plays somebody that can change on a dime. But like you, look, to me, the, the, the, this, this sociopolitical realm that Robocop took place in, I mean, obviously, it was a huge send up of corporate America and where we were going, the 80, the spending and the get rich. Yeah. That whole, the whole era of the 80s. And I do think that I don't think I've lived through a time in American history where our government and our corporations and AI corporations need to be made more fun of than today. And I think if they lean into the, the satire element, I mean, the remake of Robocop was a little too serious, I thought. It didn't, it didn't have that. I mean, aren't we deserve the only way that we can have any kind of decent political discourse in this, in this country these days is if you make it a satire and have an element of humor where everybody can look at it and they don't feel personally attacked. We've all become so infantilized that we can't have any kind of political discourse without just screaming at each other. And the best way to approach it is through really biting, really go for the jugular savage social commentary in a show like Robocop. And it's built into the concept, you know, and and I think that that's like I think about Dan O'Hirley, like when the Ed 209 blows away that executive and he's like, Oh my god. I'm very disappointed. It's like clean this top. Someone cleaned this top. And yeah, it's, there's so much that this, this, if they want to, if they want to go for broke, the problem is, and also to comment on AI, the fact that you're, you're, you're dealing with the duax Machina, the ghost in the machine, which is again a part of the original Robocop, how much man, how much humanity is inside the machine. And and there's so much stuff that it could be really, really well done. I just don't believe that there's a, there's enough of a, of great writers to, to make this the kind of thing it should be because we've seen they tried to redo total recall. There's been there's, there's a new. I didn't mind the total recall remake to be honest. All right. But are we talking about, are we talking about the Glenn Powell one? No, that's running. That was running man. Okay, running man. No, but total recall. I had some fun with Colin Farrell. But I mean, they're, they're going back so weird to me that we're getting these shows like they're doing a Neuromancer TV show. Yes, Neuromancer was the first cyber punk novel that came out in 1984. We're getting another, we're getting a Blade Runner TV series. And these were all visions of the future that come from the 80s. And it's weird to me that they are being recycled when we're on the edge of, there's so much more going on now that there wasn't the 80s. It's bizarre that we constantly are recycling these visions of the future that are from 45 years ago. That's because the people that are in power of age now. And that's what they're trying to, but science fiction has always been about trying to make sense of today through the lens of science in the future. Yeah. All right, guys. I hope it's good. Question is for you. What do you think of the casting of Dan Stevens? Listen, I may have a little bit of an apprehension about whether or not it's a good idea to do, you know, this particular project at this moment. But I do love the casting of Dan Stevens and awful lot because I just think the guy's great. Whatever you guys think, jump down to the comments section below and let us know your thoughts. You know, there isn't I, I can't remember a day since the pandemic, maybe that I haven't woken up and thought to myself, self, when are we getting a how to lose your guy in 10 days, sequel? So it's not just me. Yeah, it's not just you, man. I think there's a lot of us. I think a lot of us are in that boat. Yeah. And you know, when I, when we would ask the question, you know, Paramount says they're going to put out 30 moves a year. How are they going to do that? How can we forget the IP gold mine? That is how to lose a guy in 10 days. It counts as one. Either way, it does count as one coming to us from variety who writes how to lose a guy in 10 days sequel sets up at Paramount Kate Hudson to produce and they write the following. How to lose a guy in 10-day sequel is in the works at paramount with original star Kate Hudson attached to produce the project variety can report exclusively development on the sequel is in early stages with the cast several key creative roles yet to be selected according to a source close to the project. The intention of the filmmakers and the studios to have Hudson and her co star from the original Matthew McConaughey reprise their roles. The project is currently seeking a screenwriter so casting will depend on the take. All right. So the idea is to do a sequel with the original cast of how to lose a guy in 10 days. I have to ask why? Why? Now look, I don't, by the way, I myself do not think how to lose a guy in 10 days is a terrible movie, but a lot of other people do think it was a terrible movie. Like if we go over and take a look at the numbers. The rotten tomato score was 42% 42% the last I checked 42. The production budget was a poultry $50 million and actually didn't do bad for itself or for production budget $50 million made $177 million not exactly a global monsoon of box office success, but you know, it made it made a little bit of money and listen, it also cannot be denied that I mean, it's got a little bit of a cult following status, considering the fact that this movie is like what 14 years old? No, no, no, no, no, no, 24 years old. Yeah. Yeah. 23. Yeah. Everybody knows it. I mean, even if you haven't seen it, if somebody says how to lose a guy in 10, oh, yeah, the romantic comedy Matthew McConaughey, like everybody knows it. I mean, so there's something to be said there and listen, I adore Kate Hudson. I adore her and I always have loved Matthew McConaughey. So that's all good. But in the grand new exalted era of David Ellison, we've gotten a new Jackass movie and we're going to get a how to lose a guy in 10 days sequel. I mean, they've got more on the plate and more is coming. Make no mistake. I'm being a little bit facetious. But I mean, I and I get it. There's been a bit of a resurgence, if you will, a reconnaissance, if you will, of older, I'm bringing back older IP and listen, again, the name, how to lose a guy in 10 days itself carry some value. But once again, you go back and you, you look at the numbers, I mean, generally it wasn't super well received. It, it's not like it was some huge massive success. It wasn't one of the better, you know, romantic comedies of the time of that age. No. And that was the golden age. That was the golden age of romcoms, right, from, from there to about 2015, was like a golden error for romcoms. I mean, I think like not a meal, but better reviews. On top of all that, right now is not a golden age for romcoms. And I would love to see some good romcoms come back to be honest with you. But now is not the golden age for romcoms. So look, who am I kidding? It's, it's Matthew McConaughey, right? I'm going to be there to watch this movie when it opens and, and give it a shot. But I just don't know about the wisdom of making it. Anyway, Rob, you saw this news, how to lose a guy in 10 days is, is coming back and they're going to try to get the original cast. What do you think about it? Well, because it's paramount, it could be the top gun maverick of how to lose a guy in 10 days movies. But, yeah, look, I get it. Everyone is risk averse and, and frankly, I've always been a Kate Hudson fan because almost famous is one of my favorite movies of all time. And she's got nothing but more beautiful as the years have gone by. I think the movie when she was in that film with Hugh Jackman last year or this year, this was this year. Oh, yeah. The one about Neil Diamond. Yeah. Neil Diamond impersonator. Yeah. She's, I thought she's never looked better. So I'll watch anything she's in. Songs on blue, I think. Songs on blue. Yeah. Um, again, to me, it all comes down to, did they, do they have a good script and a great story? Right now they don't have a script at all. They haven't even hired a screenwriter yet. Well, that, and that's, that's the thing. I'm like, what is the impetus for doing something like this when you could pick a new, like why not give us a new teaming of Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey in a, in a new story that's, that, that is relevant to the modern age, you know, kind of like the way that Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan used to do, right. They just didn't do a bunch of sequels that people just likened together, right? And they kept a period. I, I think that idea Rob is, is a, is a great idea. If you want to capture a little bit of the Renaissance or the, the, the memories of Hadloos the Guy, make a new modern romcom with the same two people, but don't make it a sequel to that one. Well, and what's so interesting is we now live in this world where people are talking about, you know, younger people aren't dating. No one's getting, no one's getting late anymore. Make a really interesting modern comedy of manners about what is life like today, you know, and if these characters never stayed together after the movie or whatever the heck happened between them. And if they're getting back together, I think there's, there's a lot of real relevant stories that can be told that who doesn't love Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey today? Everybody loves them. And if you were to write something that was really funny, that really had a lot to say about today. I think though the problem is the writers today are so worried about how, especially comedies, everybody's so worried about offending whatever groups of people they're offending that it's really difficult. I'm waiting for all the great comic talents of today, the, you know, the Nora Ephrains. Where's the new Nora Ephraine of today or where's the new, take your pick of all the great female filmmakers that made movies like The Holiday, which I love. You know, where are these filmmakers? Give me something new. And also here's a really interesting thing about this that is very confusing to me. It says in the article, which, which we just read, that they don't even know what this movie is going to be about yet because they said the goal, of course they don't. The goal, I mean, with Kate Hudson producing clearly, she's all on board to come back. And if the goal it says in the article is to get her and Matthew McConaughey back, then that will be the direction of the script. And if they can't get Matthew McConaughey to come back, then they're just going to take the script in a completely different direction. So you don't even know what this movie is going to be. You don't, you don't even know. Is this movie a sequel? Is this movie a reboot? Is this movie a, Kate Hudson is going to play the mom to a 20 year old girl who's now chasing down a Timothy Shalame or something like that? They don't eat, you're announcing, you're moving ahead with this movie. And right now, you don't even know what the movie is because you don't know what Star Wars is going to be. It was, well, at least they thought they knew what it was when they started. I'll at least give them that. They thought they knew what it was. New title for it. How to lose a movie studio in 10 months. Yes. Somebody, somebody put in the live chat a minute ago, Paramounts motto. How to lose money in a few days. I just, I just look, look, I'm fine with this if they said, yes, okay, Hudson locked in obviously she is. She's a producer on it. McConaughey locked in. We've had this, we've talked about this for years about what, what would those guys' relationship look like today? And we are now, okay, then you've got a vision for it, you haven't, they don't even know what this movie is going to be. And they're moving ahead. And it's just, it's man. If that's what we are in for with a future of Paramount, come on guys, I mean get this together. But look, it's still Kate Hudson, it's still Matthew McConaughey, put them on screen. You know, the other day, some whisperers started going around about Andy Mishieti making a comment that the Batman movie, Brave in the Bold or whatever it will actually end up being called at DC is being put on hold until they figure out what's happening with the merger. And somebody brought that up on the show the other day and Jonathan, you'll remember this I said, you know, one of the viewers sent in question about that and I said, I don't think that's true. Like I don't, I don't think that's real. I said, well, I mean, if it was real, maybe it's just James Gunn wanting to be considerate of whoever's going to come after him because you know, I believe James Gunn as soon as the middle of 2027 comes and he gains the contractual right to walk away, I think James Gunn is going to get out of Dodge because I don't think he has any interest in working for the Ellison. So he's going to get out and maybe he's thinking Batman is such a huge project. Maybe I shouldn't start movement on something when somebody else might want to go, I said, maybe that's possible, but I don't believe it. I don't believe it. Well, as he does James Gunn also saw everybody talking about that rumor and he decided to respond to it. Now just so you know what this is all coming from, it started with an exchange. I believe it was on Twitter where somebody wrote Michael Johnson is reportedly, I love when people say reportedly when they're not saying where they heard it from. They just speak. reported from who anyway michael johnson is reportedly in negotiations with d_c_ students to play dick grace and nice wing a night wing in any michiates that member of the bolt to which uh. dan marcus replied i have no idea if this is true false i'm assuming it's definitely false but i did hear from michiety that all work on brave in the bold is on hold until after the merger settled and that's what my viewer brought up to me i said i don't believe that's true like i don't believe that's true and sure enough uh. james gun is weighed in not long after marcus address it uh. he hadn't realized that johnson post for summer parity account while adding high-mic i was referring to the michael johnson rumor being false i did in fact here from you she had to that part is true sorry about any confusion however users brought marcus's claim to james gun himself as the latter responded on threads it doesn't sound like something and he would have said but the project isn't no way on hold so this one guy claims that and you should be told him that work on brave today i'm just a morpheus host of the platypus economics podcast if there's one thing i've learned from a career options here of what's going on option number one is the person reporting that mucity said that is mistaken uh. either they misunderstood what was being told to them or maybe somebody posing is muc叶 the told them something or maybe they made it up i don't know i don't know the person involved so i can't make any commentary on that the second possible option is that yet again and muc叶 the and james gunner not on the same page because rob you remember couple years ago almost an identical thing came up where and muc叶 he said something publicly and james gun had to come on say uh. no that's not true and it just kind of became clear that these two guys were not communicating with each other and were probably not on the same page i guess another potential option here is that you know until there's something to go to the director about and james gun still isn't happy with where any of the scripts are at right now that maybe and muc叶 he just took radio silence as things being on hold just kind of said uh. maybe i guess things are on hold i mean i don't know either way whichever way you look at it for what the cause of it is james gun has come out and to bunk the idea that it's on hold there's still moving forward with it and trying to get it right now i have expressed on this show my frustration as a fan just as a fan that you know we are now a number of years into the d_c_e_ we are about to have our third jimmy ulson thing uh. because you know of course we've had jimmy ulson superman we're gonna have him in uh. the people versus grilla grud and we're gonna have him in uh. man of tomorrow so we're gonna have three jimmy ulson things before we have back and i find that i find that to be an interesting choice at the same time i think james gun and probably everybody over there understands k-look you can get a clay face wrong and if you get a clay face wrong uh. it's a bump it's unfortunate you'll sting but it's clay face and everybody will move on and forget i think there's even room for getting supergirl wrong which they did cuz it's supergirl it's a b-level derivative character i mean it would have been great if it turned out as well as i was hoping it would have turned out but it didn't that's whatever you can't mess up superman and thank god they didn't and you can't mess up that man you can't mess up that man you cannot deliver a mediocre batman especially look under the best of circumstances you cannot deliver a mediocre batman especially if it's your first batman movie but you especially cannot put out a mediocre batman if you're coming off of a failed supergirl movie you can't do it you put out a batman whatever it's gonna be called movie and like twenty twenty eight while the memory of supergirl still in everybody's mind and if that movie turns out flat i'm not going to say you're dead in the water it's recoverable but you're on life support you're on life support so i cannot help but wonder if i mean number one rob we know he said before look i'm not putting anything out the door till i'm completely happy with the script he has said before that we want to really make sure and spate pay do attention he called to batman because he's batman but i also can't help but wonder if the flopping of supergirl um. has ramped up the pressure on what batman is and he wants to make sure it's it's got to be absolute gold it's it's i mean it doesn't have to be the dark night it doesn't have to be as good as Christopher Nolan's dark night but it needs to be really good it needs to be really good and so i wonder and i'm just speculating here i wonder if that's part of what might be holding things up a bit so i don't know i mean again i never bought the idea that anything was on hold because clearly a lot of things are in development there they've got a lot of things moving they just announced off about the broad thing which by the way is kind of won me over the description of the uh. what was it called what's it called the people versus grub versus grub i was very skeptical about it but when they made the official announcement about it with the title with the actual story was going to be it's kind of won me over so i'll give the benefit of the doubt for now but uh. yeah look i i'm still a place rob where the hell's batman where the hell's one woman i also kind of get it if the pressure is on them to really make sure cuz you can't you can trip with peacemaker season two although i thought peacemaker season two is great you can trip with clay face clay face looks really good we'll see how it turns out but you can't trip with batman anyway rob uh. you saw this somebody saying any mucyade said one thing he never said it publicly by the way james gunna saying that doesn't sound like me andy uh. and no that's not true i don't know what's your takeaway from all this well i mean look obviously there's a bad man movie being made right now and i can't wait to see you know and and i i just think that when it comes to the d_c_ universe we just have to let them cook let that will wait and see what what what's happening you know i don't with andy mucyade talking about his involvement i mean it's been back and forth and and what i like to see him make a bad man movie i would but i i honestly john i think after i think the d_c_ universe was presented to us as this fully formed sort of fleshed out universe phase one whatever was gods and monsters here's our big plan and half of those things are never going to reach fruition that they talked about and i kind of wish that i didn't know that they were going to make a bad man brave in the bold movie so i wouldn't be waiting for it i mean they created this expectation in our minds that they're going to do these things and so do i think that do i even think this movie's going to happen i think it is going to happen but it doesn't surprise me that it's been delayed because i think they're going to let they they want to stay really far away from the batman twos wake they want to stay away from that not create any kind of confusion and it i i think andy mucyade is very respected by the studio by one of brothers james gun knows that they probably really like each other and you and i are flash fans yeah so he he's already made a superhero movie that is very worthy despite what everybody else says i am an unabashed fan of that movie is it perfect no but i quite enjoyed it and i really love the portrayal of super girl and i like seeing michael keaton come back and the ending with the multiverse was weird but i liked it anyway but i think that eddie mucyade is a very effective filmmaker i think he could probably do something great with the character and i hope they have a great script and i think you know i think the dc you has been a little weird to be honest and i think that they they're they're veering into sort of these secondary characters look if clay face is a banger and they made it for a little money as they did compared to the other big superhero movies i think that and i'm enjoying what they're doing with lanterns despite the fact that everybody keeps coming at me and telling me what it's supposed to be like i'm like he has to even read 70s green land in comics what do you know and i you know i i want to see where it's going to go but i i'm willing to wait let's see what happens You know, we've got lanterns. more episodes and then we've got clay face coming. That's all that's to speculate about what's going to happen or what's not going to happen and we know we're getting mad of tomorrow. So that's not a bad slate. We have two DC movies coming. Now are we supposed to sit here and I mean speculate about a movie that we have no idea where it's at in terms of its script, in terms of its casting, although I think we might hear some news. Yeah, well, we'll come back around to that another time, but you know, the thing about Andy Mishetty is I'm with you. Flash, I don't care what he says, like flashes of I thought was a very enjoyable movie. I had a really good time with it. And there's like I see some people in the live chat, but the majority of people didn't like it. Actually, the audience rating is 81% majority people didn't go see it. Those who did see it like the majority people didn't go to see it, but the people who saw it liked it. Four to one people liked it. And that does mean if you didn't like it, that you're supposed to like it, not at all. If you didn't like it, you didn't like it. Nothing wrong with that. But I thought he I thought Mishetty did a really good job with that. And then he does it. Welcome to dairy, which was fantastic. I love it. He crushed it with that. Really good. But I'm still not sure he's going to end up directing this Batman movie. I've said this for a couple of years. It just seems like him and James Gunner on the same page. And maybe they do get it together and they make it work. But we will have to see. All right, guys, question is for you. What do you think about this? All right, guys, with that down, we thought today would be a good day to play ourselves a little game of overreaction. The way overreaction works is really quite simple. We went on to the YouTube's channel a little bit earlier today into our community tab. And we asked you guys to submit to us your hottest of hot takes. We've gathered up some of those hot takes. Jonathan's got them in front of them there. He's going to read them to Rob and I. And then Rob and I will adjudicate whether your hot take is an overreaction or not an overreaction. So Jonathan, what do we got up here first? All right, Rob. We're going to start with you. Is this an overreaction from Spacey Casey? Odyssey would have made, would have easily made two billion dollars if it wasn't rated R. I just don't think that's true. I think that everybody went to see Odyssey. It was the same kind of event if they had released it in IMAX at all those screens and 70 millimeter. I think it would have had almost exactly the same performance level because it's really a movie whose rating had very little to do with the content of the film itself. So I think that's an overreaction. I agree and disagree. I mean, first of all, I'll say I agree that it's an overreaction. It's an overreaction because look, Odyssey is going to swim in around the 1.5 plus millions up. It's at 1.4 something right now. It's going to it's about to go to leave its IMAX. It's running out of its IMAX time. It's going to come in around 1.5, maybe even 1.6. But we're talking about that still leaving four to 500 million to get to the $2 billion mark. Now, look, does the R rating cause a hit on the box officer turn of movies? That's statistical fact. That's a hundred. That is proven with a century of data. Well, not a century, but decades and decades and decades of data show that yeah, the R rating, like there's a reason out of all the films in history and out of the 60s some odd films in the billion dollar club, only three of them are rated R. Only three. Does the R rating equal a bit of a hit? Yes. But in the case of the Odyssey, did it equal a 500 million dollar hit? I really, I think that's that's way overblowing it. Could it have made another 100 million? Another 150 million, another 175 million? Yeah, I think it would have made more if it hadn't been rated R. That's just statistical data. It would have made more. Would it have made 45500 million more? I think I'm going to go with Rob on that and say that one is a is a big overreaction. All right, Jonathan. What do we got up next? All right. Next up is this an overreaction, John, from Brandon Bowers. If Doomsday gets bad reviews, Marvel will delay secret wars. Massive overreaction. Because I would pose this question, what would delaying it do? Like what does that accomplish delaying it? Like, and by the way, it's not like secret wars comes out in March. It's a year later. It's like a full year later. And they already would have spent 70 trillion dollars on the movie. They're not going to dump another 300 million dollars into the movie. If Doomsday comes out and the reviews are bad, which again, would be a statistical anomaly because right now Kevin Feige working with the Russo brothers are batting a thousand. There are four projects together are, of course, just to remind everybody, winner soldier, civil war, infinity war, an endgame. Where's the weak link in that? I mean, so it's it's highly improbable that would, but even if it did, even if it did, at that point, they're just going to have to go, well, we're going to stick with what we made. You know, this is this is it. And just because one movie doesn't work out. Well, it doesn't mean the second movie won't work out well. So no, there is no reality. Look, I'll say this Rob. It's a crazy world. We live in a lot of things can happen. And at some point, something might lead to Avengers secret wars getting delayed. 99% sure it's not, but it will less than great reviews for Doomsday cause them to delay it. Unless the delay magically fixes review. No. So I'm going to call it an overreaction, Rob. What do you think? I too. I'm going to call it an overreaction, John. I mean, they're in for a penny and for a pound. There's nothing that can slow down that train. They have a lot of movie to make in in the next year. And they've got what maybe 16 months to get it done, which they can do. But I don't think that there's nothing. I mean, unless unless Doomsday was so terrible and made so little money that they decided to take a write off on the whole Shabang. But that ain't going to happen. And Doomsday is not going to be a terrible movie. It's going to be a hoot. It might not be the hoot everybody wants to get. But it's going to be a hoot and a hell of a fun time at the picture show. It's a deal. It is. All right, Jonathan, what we got up next. If you can't get the hoot, you want to find the hoot you need. Rob is this an overreaction? Muadib is here and says with Ridley Scott's recent middling offers over the last few years, including the new dog stars. He's tarnishing his reputation as one of the goats. Well, okay. I'm a huge Ridley Scott fan. And I think that nothing can erase your past accomplishments. And the one thing about Ridley Scott is, you know, a lot of his movies, he has two different versions of them. He's been a real player with the studios. He's released. They've cut his movies down like Kingdom of Heaven. The director's cuts almost an hour longer. And most of his movies have alternate cuts. So he's very much a play ball with the studio kind of director. And while I will say the last 10 years, I think he's fighting his own mortality. He's trying to make as many movies as he can. And he doesn't really. He needs to work with Pedro Scalia, his former editor more who's actually who cut whale falls. I'm excited about that. But, you know, he's making these movies so quickly. And some of them I've really liked and some of them not so much. I think the Martian, which is 11 years old, is one of his finest films. In fact, it's one of my favorite movies in the 21st century, especially the extended cut. So I don't think you can take away a man's reputation. For for the great work he's done. No one's going to ever besmirch alien and blade runner and fellman Louise and gladiator gladiator. I love the counselor. Nobody loves the counselor, but me. Nobody loves the counselor. And I love the extended version. Give me more of that goodness. But I do not think that his reputation is being tarnished because I will say this. Even when you don't love a Ridley Scott movie, I love watching them. They look incredible. From a visual stylistic standpoint, there's always something to find that I enjoy. I just wish that they were better. Ridley Scott in the last 20 years has sucked. Look, I won't I won't patty cake around it. He's like the his Napoleon one with Joaquin Phoenix, which just looked like it was going to be so good was utter trash. The last duel of God. Did you like the last tool? I thought that was a horrible movie. I wanted to like it because you got Matt Damon, Ben Affleck in it and stuff like that. I mean, you got the Martian in the last 20 years. I'm with you, Robert, it's one of my absolute favorite films. But here's the thing, this is an overreaction. And the reason it's an overreaction is because of this. Does anybody argue, okay, maybe there's some debate about the number one, but does anybody argue that Michael Jordan is one of the greatest of all time? Nobody on the planet will argue that, right? You know what his stats were in the last couple of seasons that he played? He never cracked the top 20 and scoring. He never cracked the top 40 in assists. He never cracked the top 40 in rebounds like all over the last, the last couple of seasons of his career. Does anybody today dispute or debate his place amongst the greatest of all time? No. It does Ridley Scott can put out seven movies next year. And they could all be uva-bowl level piles of crap and it doesn't matter. Paramount's listening, John. Hang on. It's like, wait a minute, can't be. I just had an idea. Okay. We got to make 30 movies, but it doesn't matter. That doesn't change. This is the guy who made Gladiator. It doesn't change that this is the guy who made this pantheon of these great films considered amongst some of the greatest of each of their individuals genres. That will never change. So yeah, today when a new Ridley Scott movie comes out, because look, dog stars looks like dog shit. I'm not going to lie. I hope it's great. I hope it's wonderful, but you can do that till for the rest of his career. And I may not get excited about new Ridley Scott movies today, but you're damn right. If somebody were to sit down and ask me, is Ridley Scott in the pantheon of the great directors, your damn righty is. And so yeah, I'm going to say, I think it's an overreaction to think he's hurting his overall legacy. Yeah, maybe we say, yeah, later in his career, he kind of stumbled, but so did all the great athletes. So yeah, I'm going to call it an overreaction. All right, Jonathan. What do we got next? All right. Sticking with you, John, is this an overreaction? We're going to hear from Elizabeth Marr, who says the Harry Potter TV show will become the most viewed show on HBO Max. You know, when I first saw the note on this, my first thought was, oh, come on, don't be ridiculous. Don't be ridiculous. I mean, we're talking about HBO Max. We're talking about Game of Thrones. We're talking about that. It's like, I don't think there's ever been a television show that has as made, had as big of a pop cultural footprint as Game of Thrones. But then I thought about it. I'm going to say this is not an overreaction. I think this show is going to be the biggest thing they have ever put out. I'm not necessarily saying it's going to be the best thing they put out because we won't know. I have no idea. I do know that the trailer looked great and I know that everybody involved with making the show, Rob, you and I have talked about this, everybody involved from the showrunners, the main producers are amongst the very top best people in the entire industry. And of course, it's a beloved source material and all that kind of stuff. And I love the feel of the first trailers that they put out. So I mean, will it be the best thing they've ever put out? Well, you're talking about the network that put out sopranos and put out the wire and put out like, so that's another discussion for another time. But Rob, I got to say the idea of it being the biggest thing they've ever put out ratings wise. I got to sit here and say, I don't think that's an overreaction. What do you think? What was the action? What was the wording of the question? The most viewed, the highest rate, the most viewed show on HBO Max. I don't think it's an overreaction. If you're talking most viewed, this is a four quadrant show, John. You're going to have kids tuning you with their families. This is going to be an appointment television game of thrones. I mean, it was appointment television for me and for adults. But you know, your eight year old Timmy wasn't exactly in a tune in to watch the Red Wedding with his mom and dad. I think, by the way, still one of the greatest episodes of television ever was the Red Wedding. I, it would not surprise me because HBO has tended, or almost always, if you think about their great shows. Look, I like Dream On because you had boobs every episode, even though it was sitcom. You know, that wasn't for kids. This show is a four quadrant show, and I think it's going to go like gangbusters. I think it's going to be their most watch show. I think it's going to be one of the most successful television shows in television history, especially on a streaming service. Because of that, I think now, now, with our always, our always caveat, if it's good, I can't imagine it not being good, but if it's good, and I think it can't help but be good. And I think good for HBO, the fact that they've, they're going to take their time with the books. I love the casting. I even loved Kid Harrington replacing Nicholas Holt for what? Guild Roy? Yeah. Yeah. I had one of one of one of one of my guys, actually, email, hey, how can you haven't talked about the Kid Harrington thing? And I said, well, I love Kid Harrington, but I was like, it's a minor character. It's a minor character. And Nicholas Holt wasn't even there long enough to have a cup of coffee. So I, to me, it's not, wasn't a big enough thing to talk about. But I mean, when you go up and down the cast, it's, it's gangbusters. It looks so good. Anyway. All right, Jonathan. One more. Don't we want to get next? Yep. Speaking of a big HBO Max series, Rob is just an overreaction. Nick asks Lantern or says Lanterns will be nominated for multiple awards at the Emmys. Look, it's a Damon Lindlow show. Watchman got some nominations. I, I, I, we are having only seen two episodes. I definitely think it, it will be up for some kind of, of maybe some writing awards, maybe some acting awards, maybe some technical awards. Sure. Yeah. No, I, look, I'll go one step further. Now to your point, Rob, we're only two episodes in and it could go off the rails. But I'll say this, if it continues at this level, I can see Lanterns getting a best drama series nomination. I mean, we've been seeing the, the television academy at recognizing and or they've recognized Penguin, Penguin got nominated for best drama series. We've, what was the other big genre one that got nominated for best drama series as well? And I'm forgetting. Severance. Well, Severance, but that, I don't, I wouldn't put that in the same category as say Lanterns. But I mean, if this show continues on that same pace, and if it made, as long as it doesn't go off the rails and alongs as it stays that good, yeah, I can see. Maybe one or two acting nominations. I can definitely see some writing nominations and I can absolutely see it being, I don't think it's a stretch to think that Lanterns, which right now I'm, I'm enjoying right now that could change right now. I'm enjoying it every bit as much as I enjoyed Penguin. And Penguin got nominated for best drama series. So yeah, I'm going to say for now, ask us again in four weeks, we might be singing a very different tune. But and by the way, join Rob and I on Monday nights when we do our Lanterns post game show. I thought that was a good show last night. We had fun. We had fun. You know, I expected like three or four thousand people to watch it. It's got like 24,000 views on it. So like, I didn't think anybody would watch us. Lanterns has a critical score, a critical score of 94% and a viewer score of 82%. So I would say, you know, I can understand the viewer's score being a little divisive. But a 94% critic score for a show like this, that's, it's pretty high up there. Yeah. And I don't trust audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes for television because I'm like for movies. They verify if somebody actually saw the movie, you can't verify if somebody saw a TV show or not. So you know, you're going to get a lot of those rage clickers who never even saw Lanterns going in and, and some, and some pro clickers who didn't even watch Lanterns yet were probably giving it a 10 to 10. So I don't, I don't really trust those scores. But the critic source are impressive and I, all I know is that I'm loving it. So yes, I can see it getting those nominations. Well, on yesterday's show, we talked about the fact that it looked like there was going, they might be putting the tickets on sale for endgame, Avengers endgame encore today. And sure enough that they did the tickets for Avengers endgame encore, which I believe the movie comes out on September 25th. Correct me if I'm wrong on that in the live chat, guys, but I believe it is, it is September 25th. Yeah, screenings on the 24th, but it's the officials 25th. We are one month away. We are one month away from it coming out. And To go along with that, they decided to put out a trailer for Encore, and there was a couple of interesting things in it. Now, you guys know, I've talked about this on the show, that I have mixed feelings about these re-release stuff. I'm not, unless it's like for a 30th anniversary or something like that, I'm not really inclined to rush out to the theater to watch these re-releases, but the fact that they're going to put in some, a few minutes of new footage and a new post-credits scene that's going to tie in to Doomsday is interesting. And just the fact that it's one of the most enjoyable watching with an audience movies you can have. And it's not many more opportunities we're going to get to watch Avengers Endgame with a big audience. And so, because of that, I'm interested, but I'll tell you what, guys, I sat down this morning and I watched this trailer, and to my utter shock and surprise, I got the chills. I got the chills watching cap, watching cap put on the shield, tighten up the strap, and on your left, and I love the fact that they use that YouTube video of somebody violating, of somebody breaking piracy laws and filming in the theater, but they put up that clip of the audiences going crazy and going. I might have actually used that same clip in movie trailers, a love story. Audience going crazy and going nuts and all that kind of stuff. And I got to tell you, I got the chills and I got the feels watching it. And I just watched this movie again, no more than about 18 months ago. I sat down and, well, one night when Ann was out of town and watched Endgame again. And I got to say, I'm kind of looking forward to watching it with an audience again, because again, I don't know if we'll ever get many more chances to do that. But as a part of that, near the end of the trailer, they put up not only tickets on sale now and September 25th, but they also advertised that when you go to watch Avengers End Game on Core, you are going to get an exclusive preview of Avengers Doomsday. And you know what, guys, here's why that was so poignant. And there are going to be people who are going to hear what I'm going to say right now. And maybe think I'm overdoing it or maybe exaggerating it or maybe even overthinking it. But when that came up on the screen and it said, you know, with exclusive look at Avengers Doomsday, I remember thinking, first I had my excitement to it, say, oh, wow, we're going to see that. And then I remember thinking to myself, it's been a good seven years. Maybe even eight years since I felt that kind of anticipation for anything MCU. There's been a bunch of stuff from the MCU that I've enjoyed over the last seven and eight years. Of course there is. But, you know, I just recently did an open mic the other day, guys, where the main question was, is are we ready to say that Marvel is back? And my conclusion was that despite the fact that I'm the guy who's been telling everybody for the last couple of years, anytime one good thing would come out, it's like, pump the brakes on saying Marvel's back. Even I'm at this point after Daredevil sees after Wonder Man, after Thunderbolts, after Fantastic Four, and after Spider-Man, and I'm seeing the hype coming back. I'm seeing the enthusiasm coming back, and I'm seeing the quality consistency coming back kept an America brave new world, not withstanding. I said, yeah, I'm ready to say that Marvel's back. Now it can become really cemented or disjointed once Doomsday comes up, but I'm ready to say that Marvel's back. But it was in that that moment came up on screen, exclusive first look at Avengers Doomsday. I felt that a kind of excitement that I haven't felt for the MCU in a long time, and a kind of signal to me that, yeah, they, we are pretty much back. You know what? It might have even started with that Comic Con presentation two years ago when they brought Robert Downey Jr. out on stage. And all of a sudden, people kind of felt hope again for the MCU when that happened. But anyway, Rob, you saw this trailer. The tickets are now on sale. The movie's got about, what did we say, John, about 123 million to go? It's got 123 million dollars to go to catch Avatar to be the number one film of all time. But that aside, what did you think about it? What do you think we might get with this exclusive look at Avengers Doomsday coming out of it? How many people do you think you're going to see it? Are you planning to go and see it in the theater again? John, I've said multiple times on this show unabashedly, I love Infinity War and Endgame. And I think there are two of, take the MCU out of it, but I mean, you can't, but if you did, there are two of the finest fantasy films ever made. And it's like a great magic trick where the magicians are juggling 10 different balls and none of them ever fall. And it is, it is a wildly successful group of films. Now some people don't like Endgame as much as they like Infinity War and I understand that because the tones in Endgame shift, there's a lot of funny moments, you know, like when Hulk gives Ant-Man tacos or the, you meet the professor Hulk with the kids and the time travel sequence where Ant-Man gets turned into a baby, you know, and there's, I get that. Those are all great moments, by the way. I love it, dude. I love them all. I understand how, and people talk about, I like when Hulk meets the, you know, Tilda Swinton and I, you meet Howard Stark and Tony Stark, there's so much stuff that happens in Endgame. And yeah, can you criticize the time, I don't care. I love Endgame and it leads up to this battle that is unbelievably satisfying. There's still people that even complained about the Memshi you shot when all the female characters come together. I'm like, that is one shot when the characters come together. You know what? When I was in the theater and I don't care what any man baby wants to cry about, when I was in the theater every single time when that one quick gather shot was done, the eruption in the theater was always palpable, like every time I watched it with an audience, the audience, not the biggest pop, but like every time I saw it with an audience, when that scene happened, there was a big pop in the theater because of it. It's a shameless audience fan service shot. I love it. I don't care. And it's letting all the, especially all the female Marvel fans out there to have their moment too. Yeah. I mean, 100%. 100%. I love Endgame and, you know, the whole, the whole battle and all of that. It's great. So and the piece of Alan Silvestri's portals track, the music track is so good. I have this on my, my big long Spotify playlist. I love that piece of music and when I saw the trailer this morning like you, I love the fact that they leaned into, you know, opening night and they showed that scene and built up to it and you heard the audience and you watched all this and then that new trailer or the new up one sheet, the new key art, the new poster art that look like that we have on the thumbnail today. Yeah. The way it raised relief. Beautiful. I mean, I look at this and go, of course, I'm going to go to the theater and see it. I've watched on 100,000 times on Disney plus, but that ain't the movie theater. I want to go see it again and not just to see what is infinity vision all about. I just love this movie and I wish they paired it with infinity war and you could see them both together in the theater. That would be cool. That would have been cool. Look, I'm one of those guys that I, I also prefer infinity war over endgame. Sure. But I still really like endgame. Yeah. Like I still really, really like endgame quite a bit. I just, I thought that's just how much I like infinity war. Like I thought infinity war was really truly exceptional and, but man, the moments in endgame, the moments are the things you remember when you walk away, right? Like, like when, when all this different thing and you're with that audience and you're with that crowd and I think that's what's bringing me back more than the new post credit scene, whatever. I'm going to read about the post credit scene the next day and yeah, more than whatever the couple of minutes of footage are going to be whatever. The thing for me that is, especially after watching this trailer, the thing for me that's probably bringing me back to the theater is to sit with a bunch of other Yahoo's and just watch this movie with a crowd again, you know, and hopefully Doomsday will give us that same kind of experience. Well, John, there's, you know, there's just scenes in this movie that are again, the opening with Hawkeye and his family. I think was, and then going into Mr. Fantasy over the Marvel logo is one of the great openings, not just to the MCU, but to any sequel movie ever. I had no idea after the end of Infinity War to open it with Clint Barton and his family. Genius. Oh, genius. So good. Genius. And you are left before the, before anything before the, when the logo starts and Mr. Fantasy kicks in, everyone's jaw was on the floor. And though, because it's showing you what happened to the universe to everybody, not your battlefield. Yeah, unbelievable. And then there seems like Captain America talking to Nat, you know, about. still fighting over a sandwich over a sandwich and that there's so many great lines of dialogue you know I get emails from a raccoon don't worry I'll listen and I mean Antman and it's there's a man's little soldier and through San Francisco to the it's so how the memorial and how the camera goes out of focus after four walks out of Thanos' thing and then it goes to black and it says five years later I'm just like oh my god there's so much in this movie that I love it's so good yeah it's and we're gonna get to go watch it again and a pen out now here's here's the question then it's promising exclusive look at Avengers Doomsday what do you know you can't say that and then just show us a reshuffled reorganized footage that are already in the trailers right like that that would be that would be bush league if they did that I'm not expecting them to show us 20 minutes of Doomsday but what do you think they might be willing to show at that screening and do they precede the movie with that Doomsday footage or does it come or will there be a thing on the screen stay stay stay seated after the movie for a special look at Avengers Doomsday and do it afterwards what do you think they're gonna do with this Rob I think they're gonna show like they do in other movies they're gonna show us a scene they're gonna show us probably a scene early on in Doomsday and then give us like a like they you know how they show you scene and then they do a bunch of quick scenes like like they show you scene from the movie then they show you a bunch of like trailer moments I think that's what they're gonna do I think we're gonna get a scene early on that and I'm not gonna say I have a theory about which two scenes I would expect one of two scenes and I won't say what they are even I'll tell you guys off camera so you'll know if I'm smarter or not but those are the only I think that's what they're gonna do they're gonna show us an extended sequence it's not gonna be a sequence that from loud it's gonna be for the first half half an hour of the movie and I think it's gonna have to do I'll just say this I think it's gonna have to do with Steve Rogers I agree I was gonna say that I think what I think I agree with you I think it's gonna be a scene and then that scene will end in the musical play and Avengers end game there is literally a baseline zero possibility that people are going into Avengers end game on core thinking that it's a new movie so no I I really don't think I mean it's a fair question asked what I really don't think there's any possibility of that Mike like very, very rare I mean yes there's going to be one special guy who lives in his mom's basement that mate but generally speaking no I don't I don't think it's going to be an issue all right Johnny got lost rights do you think gun stays or jump ship if Elson goes with the option one from your graphic yesterday of buying Warner Brothers but letting them stay in independent company that is a very good question so like one of the things that is a possibility that paramount could offer up to the states is the concept and the notion of okay and the states have said this is something they would consider that paramount buys Warner or Warner Brothers but they let it run independently like they own it but they let Warner Brothers run independently with its own budgets its own green lighting its own structure its own leadership all that kind of stuff that's not unheard of we've seen many things like that that have happened before in the world's business so the question becomes do we think that gun would still leave that's a really good question okay my guess if this were to happen and that's the situation that's the way they worked it out I think maybe gun stays at that point I'm I'm not willing to put money on that but yeah I think generally speaking I think gun stays if that's the way they like every so literally well just about for every one purchase of GTA six will equal like eight movie tickets so I mean I don't know it's it's hard to guess it's not exactly an apples to apples comparison because one is literally going to cost seven to eight times more than another one not to mention people can just sit at home and click purchase and download and start a massive download for the game because it's going to be I mean look the anticipation for GTA six is massive I don't really give a shit about it because it's a video game and I'm not here to talk about video games but it is going to be really really big but again every one purchase of that is 80 plus dollars depending on versions and stuff like that whereas every ticket of that is on average the national average about 12 bucks so hard to say hard to say except to say they're all going to be big they're all going to be very very big all right next up Thanos writes I hope as a marble fan that the DCU cinematic sign continues to thrive here's a here's a friendly competition and more options for everybody well I mean look if you're a true fan you should hope every movie that comes out by every studio is really good if you don't then that means you have an agenda and that means you're trying to bring your own personal agendas to things and blah blah I hope every movie's good I know they won't be but I hope they are and you know Kevin Feige said it best I mean the analogy of rising tide raises all ships when DC is putting out really good comic book films it increases the overall enthusiasm amongst movie fans for comic book films and that helps marvel and vice versa so yeah everybody should always be hoping that the movies are great we should all be hoping every movie we go see is great and won't always work out that way but it's not what we should be hoping for all right next up jay toven writes the browns are terrible starting Watson yeah but their option is Sanders listen Dishon Watson at one point was a elite level quarterback at one point and when you've shown that you can be that good, then it is possible for you to be that good again. Sanders, I still don't believe Sanders is ready for is a ready quarterback. I think he can ride the bench for a couple of years and learn a lot and be good, but I even watched him last year. I definitely didn't get the feeling like he was NFL ready. So I just don't, the Browns got stuck with the worst contract in history. They never should have signed to Sean Watson. They never should have signed him, but it's what they have now. So it might be the best of a bad situation. And yeah, they've popped up in a movie or two here or there, but I would never say that Bono has some great filmography as great as I think Bono is and as great as Dolly was and as culturally relevant and as much of an icon as she was, not exactly an iconic film. I mean, she was never a movie star. She would appear in movies as a music star, but I guess I would say if you've never seen nine to five. Do you think in hindsight, it was a bad idea to make end game feel like a definitive end? Up until last year, there didn't seem to be a clear path forward. No, end game, end game was the crescendo of that whole Thanos storyline. And it absolutely needed to feel like completion, like it's like a good season of a television show. To me, supernatural was one of the best at doing this. The end of a season should feel like the wrapping up of a storyline. And that's what supernatural did so well. At the end of every season, they wrapped up what that season's story was about. And then they cracked the door open about what the next one could be about. They wrapped up the big Thanos storyline, but it's still a huge world. And you got to remember, they faced a number of challenges coming out of end game. You didn't have Robert Downey Jr. anymore. You didn't have Chris Evans. Those two were the heart and the soul of the MCU. As celebrities, they were the faces. Robert Downey Jr. Chris Evans were the faces of the MCU. As characters, Captain America and Iron Man, they were the heart and the soul of the MCU. And they were gone. And then a lot, then the individual that they had a lot of their future plans being built around suddenly passed away. And really left them in a lurch. And so yeah. And then of course, the Bob Chepeck thing and then, you know, just not putting out good product, all that kind of stuff kind of hurt him. All right, Austin A. writes one of two. Hey, John, you give the example of Black Panther as a character who needs to be African-American because it's integral to the character. Oh, I read this before the show started, but two, two. But when you fan cast Magneto, you don't seem to have the same thinking for the character being Jewish actor because it's never important to their story. Given the importance of his religion to the character, it's never important to his character. Can you please elaborate why? Well, as I kind of addressed in the in the live chat a little bit earlier, there's a couple of big things. Magneto being Jewish really doesn't have much to do with this character or his story at all. It really doesn't. But the second big thing that you have to remember is this is that Magneto wasn't created as a Jewish character. As a matter of fact, Magneto was around for decades before they made him, they changed his origin story and then they made him a Jewish character in 1981. And so that's when they gave him that story, you know, in '81. So it was never a part of his character and they just kind of made it one. I'd still highly mention that again, like if you just watch the movies and read a lot of the stories as Judaism is hardly ever mentioned or ever brought up or ever a part of his character. Now I have said many times on this show many times that there is no reason you can't still say the character is Jewish. If you want to say that the Magneto character is Jewish, you can keep that. There's nothing, nothing says you can't keep that. What I have argued correctly is that you can't say that his background now is as a Holocaust survivor in the concentration camps during World War II because then Magneto would have to be 90 years old. Just like in Batman, when Batman started in the comics, he did not have digital technology because none of that was around. None of that was a part of the world. But you can't do a Batman movie today without Batman having the highest of high-tech digital technology, right? You're not going to say, well, you know, the origins of Batman you never had the technology. Well, okay, but great. It's 2026. It's a different era now. And so my argument has always been, you can absolutely keep Magneto Jewish. 100%. You can. I don't think it's 100% necessary, but you can absolutely do it. And I think it would be great if they did. But what you have to change is that foundational, traumatic experience that he had when he was younger that made him see the absolute worst in humanity because we're not going to have a 90-year-old Magneto. Because I brought this up the other day too. What are you going to do in 2040? When you're making new X-Men movies in 2040 or 2045, are you still going to say he's, he had his childhood in the Holocaust? No. So it's just there are some things about every comic book character that has been around for more than a generation that you simply have to change as years progress because it doesn't make sense anymore. You can absolutely have Magneto as still being a Jewish actor or still being a Jewish character. 100%. 100%. You just have to change what that horrific atrocity of humanity was that he witnessed that turned him against humanity yet that has to change it just has to when they made the first brine singer x-men film i believe it was ninety nine that was pushing it that was as late as you could do it and it made for one of the greatest openings in comic no the greatest opening in comic book movie history with a whole thing about young airick being in the concentration camps one one of the best openings of any movie certainly the best opening of any comic book movie but nineteen ninety nine was pretty much as late as you could do it and it's now twenty twenty six it's twenty seven years later you can't do that story anymore especially if you're gonna have a magnet it's like forty forty five fifty years old you just can't do it but you can still say the character is Jewish that doesn't change and again unlike black panther who everything about black panther is about being black his whole he is the ruler and king and protector of what condo which is the african nation that is it's a part of his origin it has always been part of his origin it has always been what he is and that is an integral main part of who and what the character is every single day that is a part of what the character is you cannot make that same argument for magneto and the origin they made up for him in nineteen eighty one you just you can't make that same argument but again i am all for and i'm a hundred percent behind still saying the characters Jewish you just got to change the origin you have to change the origin all right next up awesome rights if the MCU decides to go with the Jewish origin how important is it to cast magneto with the Jewish actor zero importance that's bullshit that's told bullshit i'll always say it i've said it a thousand times on the show i'll say it again actors play characters they are not in real life i i don't believe michael fosbender was Jewish but you could play a Jewish character um what's his name uh something stone street from um uh from modern family not a gay man but he played a gay man fantastically certain gay actors not straight people but they play great roles as straight people you don't have to go out and find actual living Nazis if you want to make a movie about world war two germany you get actors who are not Nazis to pretend they're Nazis so if they do which i think they should keep Eric as a Jewish character just with a different background no it is not important that they go and get a Jewish actor to play him a lot of the actors in Hollywood are anyway but it's not important that you do or that you don't all right next up uh guy writes made kids marathon all MCU movies that's good parenting right there guy that is some good parenting uh waiting for endgame and theaters marvels new encore poster and trailer just gave away spoilers furious well it's a movie it's been out for eight years or seven years it's it's the movie came out seven years ago i i think we're okay with this but although i do have a feeling guy you're being i got a feeling you're joking a bit i have a feeling you're joking so i i think but yeah it is a movie that it's not like it's a new movie it's been out for a while but yeah man that poster was great and the trailer was great i yeah man i wasn't i was planning to go see it but i wasn't excited about going to see it that i got to admit that trailer made me excited to go see it anyway okay okay rights hey john if millions of people flock to netflix to watch the gta six footage do you think the movie studios will try this approach by releasing anticipated trailers on their streaming service versus youtube no the purpose of the of a trailer is to promote a movie what this gimmick is by the way i don't mean gimmick as a derogatory term gimmicks are important used below gimmicks are like any other tool they can be used properly they can be used badly this gimmick is not promoting gta six gta six is promoting the gimmick and that doesn't help a movie right that doesn't help a movie like people are not people are going to tune into this thing because they're interested already in gta six um it's so it's a different version where it's a trailer is you try to get it in front of people you try to get a trailer in front of people so that they will become aware of and then maybe get excited about the movie this is the reverse it's like the pre-existing excitement from video game players of gta six is what's going to drive them to go watch this and that's just not what a trailer is and that's not what a trailer does and that wouldn't help a movie in any way shape or form all right next up Raymond writes r_p_ dolly pardon besides her music she donated one million dollars to Vanderbilt University for early research for the modern marina covid vaccine listen over the years the stories i've heard about not just on grand scale stuff like big big money donations but like what she's done for individual people again i i just pose the same question i posed earlier who didn't love the dolly pardon what was their not to love about dolly pardon all right Cameron bird writes jafar jackson nightcrawler fan cast i don't know if he has the chops to nail the german accent and the other mannerisms but he would nail the acrobat style moves no he wouldn't he they would get a stunt double to do all the acrobat style moves uh look i honestly have no idea if jafar jackson connect i do know see it's we always you're you put yourself in a danger spot trying to evaluate an actor on one performance especially when that performance was doing the best imitation you can of your uncle and for the record i really liked jafar jackson and michael i really did but i it didn't give me any more insight as to whether or not he's a good actor or not i just know he did a great impression of his uncle like a great impression of his uncle that made it very enjoyable to watch him in the movie but i honestly have no idea if he can act so to say that he i yeah i don't know to me it's that's a big stretch to go then to nightcrawler because no he would not be doing any of his own stunts he cannot do the things that nightcrawler can do it would absolutely be a stunt performer doing all those things and i simply don't know if he can act i'm not doubting he can act i'm simply saying i don't know yet now there's been some reports recently about jafar being casted in a couple of other projects and i'm very interested in seeing some other projects where he's not playing his uncle to see how he works out and see how good he is but at this point i just don't really have a baseline to have an opinion good or bad about whether or not i think jafar is a good actor or not i'm not saying he's not i'm just saying i i can't tell yet because i've only seen him in one role where all he was doing was impersonating his uncle and did a magnificent job of it but i got to see him in something else i got to see him in something else all right next up hollow lord writes hey john deadline says dan stevens is new robocop we covered that a little bit earlier in the show and i i listen always a good idea to to cast talent mw uh u_n_s_y_ writes any word on cat i can't even i don't even know what that means Alex von golem writes hey john did you see the teaser for rings of power season three it looks very good the precious is getting made can't wait for it to start i'll tell you what i have not seen the trailer for it yet but i will go back to um what i've said about it before which is i can't even begin to tell you how disappointed i was like i didn't think season one of rings of power was garbage but i was very disappointed in it because i had very very very high hopes and while i certainly think there was some absolutely good things about it um the the distance between how good i thought it could be and how it actually ended up being was quite fast and i ended up being very disappointed in it again had some redeemable elements of it had a couple of episodes i actually enjoyed but overall i was very disappointed in it season two and i get it there are some people who planted a flag after season one saying we don't like rings of power and they planted their flag so no matter what season two did they were just going to say the same thing me i absolutely am always willing to change positions on things as new stuff comes out and i didn't even start watching season two when it first dropped like i'll get around to it because i was so disappointed in season one i'll get around to it wasn't until like week two or three that it was out and um rings of power season two was a significant improvement over season one i'm not saying was house of the dragon good i'm not saying it was shogun good i'm not saying it was breaking bad good i'm not saying that it's just that i don't know if you i don't know if you honestly watch season two if you don't at least ignore it doesn't mean you had to like it but if you don't at least acknowledge that season two was a significant improvement over season one it was a significant improvement and i actually i'm not going to say i loved season two but i'm - I'm gonna say, I actually enjoyed season two. I actually enjoyed season two, mostly because of the, it was a vast improvement, vast improvement. Now, if they can continue that trajectory, and I'm not saying they can, but if they can continue that trajectory, season three could be finally something that lives up to its potential. But you know what? I just go into something hoping that it's at least good. And if season three can at least be as good as season two, oh, I'll be satisfied. You know, it won't end up in my favorite shows of the year or anything like that, but if it can at least be as good as season two and not regress, I'll be satisfied. Sure, but if they can continue the trajectory and make it even better, we could be talking about something that's pretty damn good. So it's not been often. I could probably count on one hand, the number of shows that I thought started really bad like "Rings of Power," and then made significant improvements going into its next season. But "Rings of Power" did it, and it still needs to be better, but let's see how season three does. All right, next up. I think we only got a few left here. Everything movies rights. Got my IMAX tickets for end game on core right after 12 p.m. Eastern when they went on sale. Have you gotten your tickets yet, John? Also RIP Dolly Pardon, I have not. And I'll I'll show you why. Let me let me bring this up here. I will show you the conundrum that I am in and will continue to be in until December. When you have AMCA list, you can have up to four tickets ready to go at any time. Up to four. You can see up to four movies a week, right? Here is my problem. That's my problem right now. Three out of my four slots are already taken with movies that are coming out in December. I have on my A list, I have a December 15th screening of Dune Part Three, and then on December 17th, I have a screening of Dune's Day at one 30 in the afternoon and of Dune Part Three at five 30 in the evening, which means I only have one empty slot left. That's it. So if I go and use my A list to go and book myself a ticket for Avengers on core right now, that means I will have no more movies I can go see on my A list until after I see on core in September 25th. It means I will not be able to use my A list to go see movies for free for a month. For a month, and I've never run into this problem before. I mean, I've run into problems where, oh, I've got two of my slots taken up for a few months, but I've never been in a position where I am literally going to be sitting with only one slot left available to my A list for the next September, October and November. For the next four months, I'm going to have to be very, I'm only going to be able to use it to get tickets to things I'm going to this week. So I can see it and open up the slot again and then see something else. So if I can book on core right now, I can book end game on core, but if I do, then I'm not going to be able to use my A list to see free movies for the next month. And so that is the, that is the predicament I find myself in right now. All right. Next up, Alex van Goghmer, it's one of two, thinking about the comic run. The potential of Doctor Strange supporting Doom in the movies would make for more depth to the story. To have one of the larger heroes support the villain is heartbreaking and makes Doom's reason for his plan more compelling in my opinion. But if you're thinking about the comic run, like there are several different stories where in comics where some significant things happen between Doom and Doctor Strange. Like Doom was actually an apprentice to Doctor Strange, one thing, Doom helped Doctor Strange go into hell to rescue his mother from the Fisto. Then there is of course the actual comic book storyline of Secret Wars where Doctor Strange is kind of the right hand man to Doctor Doom, but whether they follow that or not, I don't know. But we've had that kind of storytelling. Like, oh, what if the heroes are supporting the villain? Well, that was done best in X-Men Age of Apocalypse, not the movie apocalypse, but the comic book run, which I think is the greatest comic book story run ever in history, X-Men Age of Apocalypse, where in this upside down world, the apocalypse world that got created, like Cyclops works for Apocalypse. Sabre Tooth is on the X-Men. I mean, so they've done that before. So, but it will definitely be interesting to see if they do draw from that at on and end up having Doctor Strange, which I think they will, working with Doctor Doom, but if you know, if you know the comic book story, you know that has its own drama, but we won't go into that right now. All right, next up, we got Bobby Jackson who writes, "If W.B. are putting any projects on hold to wait to see what happens, which they're not, what happens with the merger, would shareholders be okay with that? Do they have an obligation to operate businesses usual? They are not doing that. They wouldn't. In any merger and acquisition, until it's finalized, the business being targeted for acquisition has to carry on businesses normal. You have to. Because if you don't and then the merger falls through, we're now your stuck. Now you're behind, you're all this kind of stuff. You absolutely move on. David Zazlav said, shortly after they announced the Paramount Warner Brothers take over months ago, he did a town hall meeting with Warner Brothers employees and he specifically said, we're gonna continue on business as usual. And if the merger falls apart, we'll collect an $11 billion check or however many billions of dollars they get to collect from $7 billion or whatever the breakup fee is. We'll collect several billion dollars from Paramount and continue moving on. So no, there is absolutely no validity, no truth, no world, where Warner Brothers or DC or anybody else is holding off on projects until a merger happens because that's just not how you do it. That's not how any businesses do it. And so they're just moving forward as possible. Wow, only thing left was an 11 PM had to buy for a theater further away was able to score for Thursday. You know, I never checked today to see, I mean, I'm sure maybe we'll be able to talk about tomorrow once I'm able to look into it, but I haven't checked to see what has the response been, like how have the ticket sales been? How have the ticket sales been? I honestly don't know yet 'cause the tickets just went on sale today. So I don't know if I'm gonna look on my local theater and see that it's all three quarters empty or if they're filling up. I mean, I'm gonna have to look into that, but that's interesting, Josh, that you looked and they were pretty much filling up. That's interesting. All right, frame by frame writes. I've always wanted to meet you, but it doesn't look like you're coming to Detroit anytime soon, probably not, not anytime soon at any rate. Not, not never, but not anytime soon. Hope it happens before your tire. Thanks for always being there. Yeah, I mean, there's a lot of cities, man. And I've already done, I think I've done over 20. I think we've already done over 20 cities on the movie meetups. And of course, we have five more coming up. There's still a lot of places that I wanna go. But remember, every city that I visit is a lot of driving, a lot of expense and a full day. Every town I stop at means one full day that I'm away from home and that I'm away from my wife and all that kind of stuff. So it's, I mean, listen, just driving out to the East Coast is gonna take me days. Now granted, I am gonna stop and visit my friend in Nashville for an extra day or two and I'm gonna run up and stop and visit my dad for a couple of days. But even just this five city stop means I'm gonna be away from home for two and a half weeks. And I like being on the road, but it's hard. So people say, "John, just add Houston to it." But that's another day then. That's another full day that I'm on the road. So I've gotta do these in bite sized bits. I don't actually like, I like going on trips, but I don't like being away from home for that long. So it's always something I've gotta be aware of. And all right, guys, that will do it.
