Top Prospects to Stash! Luis Lara Climbing Up Brewers Ranks! (6/3 Fantasy Baseball Podcast)

Ryan Sloan is a top pitching prospect for the Mariners kind of overshadowed by Kate Anderson these days, but he's not in a different category. I mean those two are probably in the top five, among all pitching prospects. Now he was making a big leap Ryan Sloan this year to AA after barely pitching at high A last year. And he struggled at first, still has a 434 ERA and a 123 whip at AA. But he really showed his upside in his last start, six perfect innings with 11 strikeouts. So he seems to be figuring things out. Arsenal is very impressive. Huge upside for Ryan Sloan. I don't think he's beating Kate Anderson of the majors or arriving anytime soon, but he seems to be making strides at AA. Zach Vien, remember him. He's back in Pogform, no, not really. He is having a good year at AAA though. A streak of three straight games with a home run was snapped on Tuesday. Even so, slashing 303, 417, 483 at AAA. Walking a lot more this year, keeping the strikeouts in check. And his hit-a-ball is hard as 112.6 miles per hour, much harder than we've ever, on record, we've seen Vien hit-a-ball before. I had, for the last few weeks, had Cole Carrig in my five-on-the-verge. Somebody who could potentially get called up soon to fill in out field spot for the Rockies. I've removed Carrig from my five-on-the-verge for a few reasons, none of which are Carrig's own performance. But one reason, Vien's already on the 40-man roster. And if he's doing this well at AAA, I don't see why the Rockies want to turn to him first before turning to Cole Carrig. Wyatt Sandford is a shortstop prospect for the Pirates. He is 20 years old. He's at high A, and had a three-homer game last week. This was the most questionable part of Wyatt Sandford's skill set coming in. Is there enough over-the-fence power? Three-homer game. That brings him up to 10 on the air to go with 17 steals. He's 17 for 18 install and bases. So we're seeing a power speed combo from Wyatt Sandford, whose best tool may be his defense. He's a good defender at a premium position there, shortstop. So that's going to give him a lot of leeway, which he may need because, you know, even though the stat line looks good, the one knock is a 33% strikeout rate that's very high, especially for a player at high A. He's young enough again. Wyatt Sandford, not Stanford. Wyatt Sandford is age 20. So he's still has time to overcome that strikeout rate. He's kind of reminding me a little of Carson Williams here in terms of the overall package. Williams never did overcome that strikeout issue and that's why we don't think of him as much of a prospect anymore. But Sandford has time to do that still and is much lesser known. Finally here on the periphery, Kaden Hunter, a left-handed pitcher in the Orioles organization. He is missing a ton of bats. 16.1 Kper 9, a 20.3% swingings strike rate, both of those numbers are absurd. There are some issues here with both of those for Kaden Hunter. The outings have tended to be short less than five innings. So he's getting a lot of like four and a third, nine strikeout kind of starts. And he's a 22-year-old who did most of that at low-way. He just moved up to high A and had to start just as dominant. But he's old for his level was especially at the beginning of the year, but even now a high A with a recent promotion. He's old for his level. Still great extension for Kaden Hunter, deceptive delivery from the left side has a ton of induced vertical break on his fastball making it a great whiff pitch. He's got to get to a level that's more appropriate for his age before he could really call him that. Alright, let's take a quick break and we'll be back right after this. Welcome back in, FPT Express. Let's count down the five prospects on the verge of getting called up. And this is a new looking list. Number five, well, he's not new, but there are other new names. Number five is Yohandi Morales of the Nationals. God, what's the latest here? Yohandi Morales just continues to kill it. He just hit his 13th home run on Tuesday, had a two-homer game last week. He is now slashing 344, 416, 600. And see how say 600's lugging percentage for Yohandi Morales at AAA. He's basically kept the strikeouts under control, but some of the underlying plate discipline issues or measurements. There are issues there in terms of some contact rate, chase rate. It's not horrible, but it's not good either for Yohandi Morales, but killer exit velocities and a place that are based, where it seems like Curtis Mead is settling in, but he has some flexibility there. They can make room for Yohandi Morales if they really wanted to. All right, number four is a new addition to this list, that is Luis Laura of the Milwaukee Brewers. Yeah, Luis Laura, he's young and he's at AAA, so he has moved aggressively up the brewer's system. And yet, even at 21 at AAA, he's slashing 338, 4,4,7, 500. He is lighting it up there. Not terrific exit velocities, he's only five foot seven. So you don't expect there to be a lot of raw power there for Luis Laura, but he does have seven home runs in 55 games, like he's delivering respectable home run total, particularly for somebody who's like bat skills or that good. He's walked more than he struck out this year, which is why he's got that 447 on base percentage. 18 steals, he's plenty athletic in that way. Excellent, excellent defender. That might be the best tool Luis Laura has going for him. So they would be upgrading in center field by putting him there now and they're currently playing Garrett Mitchell there, not bringing much to the table offensively. They also have South Freelike taking up an outfield spot. Two potential openings for Luis Laura again, he's young and you'd like the exit velocities to be better. But I don't, I think the brewers, obviously in contention, that's a clear upgrade they can make right now. Number three, we have Carson Milbrandt of the. at Marlins last week, he was on the periphery. Now he's on the verge. Why is that? Yeah, a couple of times he was on the periphery, but on the verge because he's moving up the triple A as seemed inevitable because the double A Carson Mill brand that's Carson with a K, a double A he put together a one 34 ERA, a one point OO whip and 13.4 K per nine. He has a five pitch arsenal. He was consistently going six innings down there. So like, this is a guy who seems fully equipped to start. Also 19.3% swinging strike rate at double A as if as if this tagline itself wasn't impressive enough. Like he was doing everything right. I think he's emerged as an elite pitching prospect this year. And if he continues a triple A like he was a double A, it might only be a starter to before the Marlins are calling him up given that they have their rotation has been hit pretty hard here. They could really use Carson Mill brand. And the top two on this list, I'm going to do a little double dip here because what do you know, they're from the same organization and the back-to-back world series winning Los Angeles Dodgers. We have pitcher River Ryan and outfielder James Tibz. Why do they now top the prospects on the verge? First, I feel like I should probably explain briefly why the top two recently. It's been recent weeks are not there anymore. No, Elvim Marte was won and that always felt like it was cheating because obviously he's not a prospect anymore. And we just have so many legit prospects which could be highlighting right now that I decided to take off no Elvim Marte. If I was going to keep him on, I'd have to put Royce Lewis to who's been killing it since the twins what sent down to AAA. That kind of defeats the purpose of a prospect report. And then the other is Kate Anderson of the Mariners who I still think is worth stashing but it doesn't feel as urgent since their rotation is already overloaded. So I just wanted the opportunity to feature some others like James Tibz and River Ryan. River Ryan missed last year with Tommy John's surgery. He's already 27 years old but he gets a pass for that age given the the lost time to injury. And five starts at AAA this year. He has dominated fastball averaging 98 hitting triple digits. 29 strikeouts to three walks. It's got a 14% when you strike rate. The Dodgers currently have Eric Lauer occupying a rotation spot. I think River Ryan has gotten some major league exposure already. He's 27. Don't see any reason why they should be holding it back. And then James Tibz has been one of the most impressive hitters in the minors all year. He's up to 17 home runs on the year including six in his last seven games. So showing no slow down the Dodgers. Have an opening in their outfield right now with Teosca Hernandez going on the aisle. So it seems like a a prime opportunity for James Tibz to step in. They're going with Ryan Ward for now. But Ryan Ward is 28. He's not really a prospect. He had a huge year last year. Not so huge this year. So I don't know that that's really going to work out. And Teosca Hernandez is supposed to be out of month. So there's time for James Tibz to usurp him. The other issue with that is 19 straight starts at DH for Tibz because he's dealing with a forearm injury. It can't be that bad because obviously six home runs in his last seven games. But it's been enough to keep him out of the outfield. And obviously outfield is what he would have to play in the majors with Shohei O'Tani at DH. So I don't know the timeline for getting Tibz back in the outfield. But I imagine once that happens, it could be a very quick turnaround and him then joining the major league team. All right.
