Too Neurotic For the Manosphere | Vile And Horrendous Episode 9 | Joe DeRosa
42m 25s
The show delivers a satirical and critical examination of contemporary cultural trends, centering on the phenomenon of "maxing"—the obsession with achieving peak performance in all areas. Host Joe DeRosa argues that this mindset is unhealthy, pervasive, and fueled by a distorted belief that excellence must be constant and absolute. He critiques the overuse of terms like "maxing" across industries, from personal growth to job performance, claiming it creates unnecessary pressure and diminishes simple, fulfilling living. To illustrate his point, he references real events: a franchise store closing over a stolen Lego collection and an Air Canada pilot allegedly flying without a license for 16 years. These cases highlight systemic failures and the dangers of unchecked ambition, especially when safety and ethics are compromised. DeRosa contrasts modern maxing with past generations’ use of the term to mean relaxation or casual leisure, suggesting a cultural shift from enjoying life to endlessly striving. He calls for a rejection of the culture of "maxing," advocating instead for "non-maxing"—a return to simplicity, balance, and contentment. The episode blends humor and outrage to expose how societal pressures, from parenting to corporate practices, have become increasingly extreme and unhealthy, ultimately suggesting that people need to stop pushing limits and instead embrace quiet, grounded living.

Folks, let's just jump right into it.
Look, we've got a returning guest on the show today,
one of our old friends, back in the house today.
Throw the pick up, guess who's back?
Dog piss in the elevator, in my building, back again.
This calls back to the first episode of the show.
Here we are, a mere nine episodes later.
And the dog pisses back.
I do want to make note, it has returned prior to this.
But seeing it now a second time in that span,
I thought it was worth documenting
and showing to all of you.
This is the world we're living in.
You can't go two weeks without a grown-up
who owns their own condo in a unit owned condo.
Or a tenant-owning building,
meaning everybody in my building owns their place.
This is the pride people take place,
or partake in in their homes,
is letting their dogs piss in an elevator,
and then leaving it there.
Incredible.
Incredible.
You can pull the pick down.
I've seen enough of it.
That's the old pick.
That's from back in the day.
That was when there was piss in three places.
Just for the people who haven't seen it.
Yeah.
That was from episode one.
There was three areas of piss, which means the dog moved
around while pissing.
Go back to the other pick from today.
This new pick, dog managed to keep it in one place.
But in both picks, the piss remains.
And that's the problem, is people
let their dogs piss in the elevator,
and they leave it there.
Now, you know, I don't need to beat a dead horse here,
because we've already covered this.
But my point is, is like, look, I get it.
Sometimes your dog has an accident, sure.
The fact that this accident is happening consistently
in my building makes it think it's not really an accident.
It's more owner negligence.
But hey, let's go benefit of the doubt.
Let's just say there's a dog.
Let's go best case scenario.
There's a dog in the building with a bladder issue.
It is very sad.
The dog maybe has cancer or some other illness.
It cannot control its bowels.
It tries its best, and it just can't do it.
That is best case scenario.
Worst case scenario for that sick dog.
But best case scenario as far as people not being gross goes.
Clean it the fuck up.
Unreal.
It's unreal.
It's like, if I had a condition where I pissed myself,
and I didn't change my pants, you know what I mean?
I don't mean regular incontinence where you got to wear Depends
or whatever.
I mean, if I had like some rare condition, let's just say,
this is what this is the equivalent of.
Because the dog doesn't know to clean it up, OK?
The owner does.
So you got to look at this as a situation where a thing is
generating piss, OK?
It can't be stopped.
But there's someone present that knows better and that it should be cleaned up.
So let's just say I had a condition where Depends won't work, whatever.
I have acid piss.
It burns right through to Depends, whatever it is.
I wet my fucking pants, and I just leave it.
Let's go a step further.
Forget my pants.
Let's say I have a condition where I black out.
It's almost like a narcolepsy thing.
OK.
OK.
I black out uncontrollably, pull my dick out, and piss wherever I'm standing.
And then I come to, and I go, ooh, what happened?
You did your piss thing again.
You just pissed all over the dining room floor.
I would clean it the fuck up.
I can't wrap my fucking head around this.
And for anybody thinking like, well, maybe they--
I might have said this on the last one.
Maybe they came back and cleaned up.
They don't.
It's there all day.
Literally, until I call the building and say, can you please send somebody to clean it?
So other people are encountering this and not calling about it, ever, ever, every single
time.
I am not exaggerating.
Every single time I call the building and say there's dog piss in the elevator, no matter
how long I wait to call between encountering the piss and making that call, it is the first
the building is hearing about it.
We can't live like this, people.
We can't all be OK.
We can't all be OK with piss.
It's just not all right.
I don't know what it is, man.
I don't know what it is about an elevator in an apartment building.

There's dog piss in the elevator.

And I go, I got to get out.

Anyway.
Oh, I had another elevator story I wanted to tell.
This is, I was going to say, elevators for some reason make people act like dickheads.
When I lived in New York, the last building I was in, it was six stories and it was one
apartment per floor.
Oh my God.
This made me fucking furious.
I lived on the top of the sixth floor, not to brag.
One day there was a sign in the elevator.
Somebody's kid had written it because it was done in like crayon with like, the kid did
a, you know, the way a kid makes a sign, there's a lot of trim and horse shit because the kid's
a fucking moron and thinks people care.
Anyway, there's a sign and it says, "If you live on a high floor, when you get to your
floor, hit one when you get out of the elevator to send it back downstairs."
It's a courtesy.
I mean, it's so simple to do.
I wanted this kid to fall off his fucking bike when I saw this sign.
You know what?
I shouldn't blame the kid.
I blame the parent.
Could you imagine being that passive aggressive?
Could you imagine being that passive aggressive that as the parent, you can't just write a
sign that says, "Respect.
respectfully. Hey guys, not to be annoying, but
Do me a favor when you, if you're on like the fifth and sixth floors, can you just hit
one and send the elevator back down?
Because apparently it's fucking excruciating to have to wait four or five floors for an
elevator to descend.
Oh my God.
You want to talk about the fucking privilege in this country.
This is what the guy's complaining about.
I got to wait six floors when I'm on the first floor.
It's torturous.
Anyway, instead of just copping to his own bullshit that this guy doesn't want to wait
for an elevator, he has his kid do a cute passive aggressive sign.
I fucking, not only did I not send it back down, when I'd get down to the first floor,
I'd send it back up.

Oh my God.
I'm telling you, there's a thing with elevators that makes people crazy.
I'm in a real not great mood today.
I just found out the car I got has a safety recall on it.
What kind of safety recall?
One that has required a class action lawsuit against the company.
Where apparently the car can catch on fire.
Even when it's turned off.
That recall.
I mean, how long have you had it?
The recall dropped the day after I bought it.
Now, to the dealership's credit, they're being extraordinarily accommodating.
And they're like, look, you can, you can.
They actually often, they go, you can have your old car back if you want.
Which is nuts.
And they're like, or we'll give you a loaner until it can get fixed or whatever.
They also were like, dude, and, and the dealership I bought it from is not the manufacturer of the car.
So I know it's not a dealership trying to cover for its own brand.
They were like, look, dude, this is affecting 1.1 million vehicles.
There's been a report of 50 of them actually having the issue over a four year recall.
The recall just came out.
But it is.
It's a recall affecting vehicles from 2021 through 2025.
So it's a four year recall.
In four years, 1.1 and change million vehicles that need the recall.
50 or 54, I think it was, were actually affected.
And to what degree they were affected, I don't know.
They tell you the signs that something might be wrong.
The vehicle is not exhibiting any of those signs.
It will probably.
Be fine until I can get the recall done.
But it's just not great.
You just sometimes feel like the universe is fucking with you.
You're in an elevator.
Standing in piss.
And then you walk in the house and you get the message that the vehicle you just purchased has this safety recall on it.
Anyway, folks, what is the ultimate point I'm driving at with all this?
I'm still driving.
I'm still drinking.
I know last episode I talked about how I'm trying to.
Not this week.
Should we get the Jack Daniels out there?
No, because it's 1.30 p.m.
And I have to be on stage tonight at midnight.
But I tell you, if it wasn't for that, I'd be beelining right out of here to a fucking bar right now.
Oh, my God.
Oh.
Guess who's going to drink Jack Daniels?
After his show tonight.
Take a guess.
Guess what his name is.
Joe?
Yeah.
You're right.
And speaking of you're right, this is you're wrong.

I want to talk about maxing.

I can't, it just annoys me anyway.
Let's.
So let's get back to it.

Oh, wow.
Hold on.

Look at this.
No, or overview, not interview.
No comedian.
Jota Rosa is not considered part of the manosphere while he frequently performs at comedy clubs like the comedy mothership in Austin, Texas, and regularly regularly appears on popular podcasts with that within that broader comedy ecosystem.
I've never heard it referred to like that.
His content is distinct.
From online red pillar manosphere influencers.

Okay.
Maxing.
Maxing started in the manosphere, uh, with, uh, looks maxing.
Uh, so it was the thing that most sane people hated.
Uh, but now it's spilled over into the mainstream and is being overused by everybody.
How do I know it's being overused by everybody?
Because I've heard of it.
Given what I just admitted about myself, it should be obvious that once I hear about something,
it is played out.
It doesn't hit my ears until it's done.
Okay.
So here's my problem.
with the maxing concept my problem with the concept isn't what it was born from
I don't give a fuck that it was born in the man I was I don't care about any of
that okay my problem with it is that it reflects a real issue people have in

here. These kids are about to murder all the elders. That's what's coming. It's weird. It's
fucking weird. And trust me when I tell you, kids maxing is a new thing. It is. It's not history
repeating itself under a different name. All right. It's not. In fact, it's the exact opposite
because when I was the age of these kids, we used the term maxing. We actually used the term maxing
and back then it literally meant relaxing. Maxing and relaxing. That was the term
as in the lyric from the theme from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Maxing. Maxing. Back then,
the poem.
The polar opposite of what it means today. And do you know why? Do you know why? Because we were
kids trying to fuck off, not succeed. Success is for suckers. Failure is for kids and cool people.
Side note, I'd like to highlight retard maxing. Retard maxing, which although I don't approve of
the name, it's a type of maxing. I don't approve of the name, but it is about lowering your standards
and ignoring the need to max. It's a type of maxing. I can get on board with that, okay? But let's get a new name for it. How about non-maxing? That's a
good name. Non-maxing. I think that works. Non-maxing, yes, because fuck actual maxing.
Fuck looks maxing. Fuck health maxing. Fuck mind maxing. Definitely fuck lobster maxing.
Fuck money maxing. Fuck whimsy maxing. Whatever the fuck that is. And extra fuck
status maxing. You know why? Because none of these terms mean anything or have any purpose
other than to fuel a twisted American notion that if you're not the best in the room,
it can only mean you're the worst. People, look presentable, live healthy,
nourish your brain, make a living, be joyous, and have people you love. That's it. It's kind of
simple, which is the opposite.
Of maxing. All right, let's move on to what a world!
Okay, you can shrink that screen now. Ow, that pinched me in the side.
All right, this first one is theft maxing.
Are you kidding? Are you joking?
No.
Oh, amazing.
Company linked to Lego scandal to repay family shuts down store.
Okay, you know what? This is good, because people have been emailing me about this Lego
scandal, and I haven't really looked it up yet. Can you throw the headline up?
Yeah.
Okay, company linked to Lego scandal to repay family shuts down store. Okay,
let's get a little context here. Franchise owners cut ties over viral back foot. Okay,
Briggs, sorry, Bricks and Mind, what the fuck?
Mini-Figs.
Jesus Christ.
Bricks and Mini-Figs.
I'm retard maxing.
It's okay.
Bricks and Mini-Figs has offered to repay the family behind the missing Lego collection.
Okay, so I guess they lost their Lego collection. Closed the Oregon store involved in the scandal.
CEO announced in a now-deleted blog post that he's reached out to Brian Manziel to make a deal.
I guess Brian Manziel is the family. The situation began when Manziel said he entered into a
consignment agreement. Yeah, that's what I assume this was.
Yeah.
To sell his family's Star Wars Lego collection worth $200,000. Jesus Christ. The agreement was
that the store would sell the items for collection, split the proceeds. Yep. Any unsold inventory would
remain with Manziel. Uh-huh. At the time, Salem Franchise was owned by Benjamin Gorman and Crystal
Law. Okay, when Manziel returned in 2024 to check on the collection status, he learned the store was
under the control of Veston Johnson. Okay,
His store was sold.
At that point, Manziel asked for his property back.
didn't have it holy shit okay so the store has closed yeah it's a franchise oh yeah yeah they're
all over the place yeah brits bricks and minifigs who hasn't heard of bricks and they're right up
there with mcdonald's yeah sure all over the place um are they going to honor so wait go back
to the headline now they said they pay them back but now the school yeah so the the company shut
down the store that was behind the theft and they were going to repay the family yeah and they've
kind of disavowed that location so now they've shut down the store are they not going to repay
the family uh they will repay the family in some sort of way oh well then that's nice hey then
they're doing the right thing yeah but i guess it was like a really big deal for a little while
because i mean two hundred thousand dollars worth of legos was gone yeah youtuber was involved and
it's it's a big deal it's not like your car having a fire recall on it but yeah sure
sorry this guy's toys went missing for 10 minutes as he walks away with a hundred grand uh
look yeah it's you know it's um it's it's it sucks uh you know i'm joking
something like this sucks i would have been furious if i was manziel uh but if they are paying
this guy at least a hundred grand that's kind of all you can ask for right there's some unreleased
stuff that's coming out soon where they said that i threatened to burn down the building bomb the
building shoot everyone inside says schneider i sent the police all the raw footage of all my
interactions with the ceo so they could clearly see they saw that i never made these threats
and they're still charging me for it anyways this is the youtuber that uh the guy that gave the
collection to the store got involved with like he heard about the story and he started getting
involved with what was going on and he got himself into some legal trouble with them too
because of what he was allegedly doing well you know look i got no sympathy for the youtuber
all right he's got nothing to do with this manziel guy as far as i can see correct
uh no he was just somebody that yeah so he's he sees interest in the story and what he just
became interested in the story yeah so he gave yeah so this is what i was talking about a few
episodes too ago every fucking guy with a youtube channel thinks he's a reporter now
so this kid fucking swoops in and he's gonna crack the case and get to the bottom of it
so he probably went in hit a level of harassment where he was repeatedly going in the store
and you should not be making allegations about about uh leave that highlighted about
uh you should not be accusing people of things they didn't do obviously or making up fake
threats or anything like that like the store did against this kid i don't agree with that
okay but this kid whose nickname is reckless or known online as reckless ben
started creating uh videos about the situation on manziel's behalf accusing bricks and minifigs
franchise of stealing so this kid jumps in he puts his big fucking stupid face in the middle
of something that doesn't fucking uh involve him which is what everybody fucking does now
and now now he gets clicks
he gets clicks
it's so funny dude is that him apparently i swear to god i didn't know what he looked like i almost
said his big stupid nose and i was like i don't know if he's got a big nose i should have just
said it i would have been spot on this kid's a fucking idiot some kid dressed like a magician
can you imagine this kid's coming in your store every day oh my god if this kid even said hello
to me i also would accuse him of making threats and saying he threatened to burn my place down
anyway watch out we better be careful reckless ben might come on down to ymh
with a story to crack all right let's go to the next one
i hope manziel gets his money yeah that's all that matters i'm sure i'm gonna get something at some
point um so next one we've got air canada pilot charged after allegedly flying without a proper
license between 2009 and 2025 how does this happen how does this happen you know what i'm gonna do
something we've never done before ready ready go for it ladies and gentlemen we're jumping out of
water world and we're jumping into the flight log
all right this is a flight log i missed this story
air canada pilot charged after allegedly flying without a proper license between 2009 and 2025
look the headline says it all okay there's not much more for us to delve into past this headline
but i will tell you this this headline in and of itself is indicative that these airlines don't
give a flying fuck about your safety they do not care about your safety or your well-being the fact
that something like this could even theoretically go overlooked by an airline is so batshit it is so
batshit there is no excuse on planet earth unless this guy was somehow magically forging a license
that could pass as a pilot's license but we'll delve in and let's see if i'm wrong
jeffrey wall of brary ontario is alleged alleged to have operated no he did it
uh
as an airline captain between 2009 and 2025 16 fucking years without a license to fly large
commercial passenger planes what a scumbag police said he piloted more than 900 flights domestically
and internationally without the required license air canada confirmed that one of its pilots held
a valid commercial pilot license but was promoted to captain without the required airline transport
pilot license well who the fuck who the fuck's fucking with me i'm not gonna lie to you i'm not
gonna lie to you i'm not gonna lie to you i'm not gonna lie to you
who's fault is that air canada
who's fault where's the part where air canada goes we fucked up
this is similar to a doctor that is licensed to practice family medicine but is doing brain
surgery in their office says deputy police chief nick milanovic alleged uh who also alleged that
59 year old wall the pilot has been flying for years misrepresent representing himself in his
credentials to his employees and he's been flying for years and he's been flying for years and he's been
employer, and railer.
Don't let Air Canada off the hook with this.
This guy is a dickhead, yes.
Air Canada is off, that is crazy
that they didn't do their due diligence.
That is crazy.
Come on, guys.
Scroll down.
I want to see if Air Canada gets any blame whatsoever.
Airline pilot was removed from active duty, of course.
Police said anomalies were detected
in a documentation check.
Oh, yeah.
Anomalies.
Safety was not compromised by this incident
because all pilots at Air Canada
undergo mandatory recurrent training
every six months to validate their flying competency,
including flight check and certified transport.
Well, guys, you think part of that six-month check
might be, I don't know, looking at their fucking license?
I love that.
Safety wasn't compromised.
Yeah, according to who?
Air Canada?
Then why is the guy in trouble?
What's the problem?
The fucking chief of police said this is the equivalent
to a general practitioner doing brain surgery in his office.
The chief of police said that,
and now Air Canada is going to say
safety wasn't compromised?
Well, these two things don't quite add up, do they?
Un-fucking-believable.
There's another interesting little twist
at the end of the article, too.
Take me to it, because I'm about to have a stroke.
Let's push me over the edge.
Police also say the accused filed a false report to police
about allegedly stolen pilot documentation.
Wait, what?
So I guess apparently the pilot involved in this
said that his documentation was stolen
and reported to the police,
so now he's in more trouble.
So, oh, he, oh, I see.
He's saying his license was stolen.
Yeah.
Okay, so you know what that is?
He thought that, he was like,
the hammer's about to drop.
I've gotten away with this for way too long.
I can't cop to it now because I'm clearly guilty.
I'm going to report that my license was stolen
and hope that they buy that
so I don't get in trouble
when they find out I don't have a license.
That was his only hope.
That was a Hail Mary to try to get out of it.
Transport Minister Steve McKinnon.
Transport Minister?
Fuck off, Canada.
Fuck off.
Fuck off.
Said the federal government would review the case
and ensure improvements.
I'm gratified that we were able to detect this issue
and get it dealt with.
Well, why are you grateful, Steve?
There was no, nobody was ever in danger,
so what's the big deal?
Despite the lengthy alleged fraud,
he said the system to detect such issues had worked.
No, it didn't!
No, it didn't!
All right, I'm done.
I'm done today.
I'm done.
We're out of here.
I'm going to have a stroke.
I got to go.
I got to go.

Podcast Summary
Key Points:
The show critiques a cultural obsession with "maxing"—excessive striving to be the best in every area—calling it an unhealthy, modern epidemic that pressures people to constantly exceed standards.
The host mocks the misuse of terms like "maxing," "retard maxing," and "lobster maxing," arguing they reflect a toxic American mindset where anything less than perfect is seen as failure.
The segment highlights real-world examples, such as a Lego store scandal and an Air Canada pilot flying without a license, to illustrate how systemic failures and overreach in modern institutions reflect broader societal issues of neglect and accountability.
Summary:
FAQs
The 'Lemonati' is a fictional shadow organization said to have spent decades promoting lemon over lime in culture, media, and products. It's used as a satirical metaphor for a dominant influence in industries, like music and soda, where lemon is portrayed as being favored over lime.
7UP's new lime-lemon soda symbolizes a counter-movement against the 'Lemonati,' flipping the traditional lemon-forward narrative by placing lime first. It's presented as a rebellious, 'flip the sip' effort to challenge established industry norms.
The host argues that consistently leaving dog urine in elevators reflects negligence and a lack of responsibility. He believes owners should clean it up, comparing it to personal situations where someone with a medical condition fails to manage their own needs.
Maxing is a slang term representing the obsession with achieving the highest level of success or excellence in all areas. The host criticizes it as an overzealous, unhealthy culture that pushes everyone to compete relentlessly, often at the expense of balance and well-being.
The host suggests that younger generations are deeply invested in personal growth and achievement, often to the point of obsession. He views this as a shift from past generations' attitudes, where 'maxing' originally meant relaxing or enjoying life, not striving for excellence.
The host proposes 'non-maxing' as a counter-term to 'maxing,' representing a lifestyle of contentment, simplicity, and balance. He believes it’s healthier to prioritize well-being over constant achievement and to avoid societal pressure to be the best.
