Tom Charlton - Satono Glow is Only Going to Get Better and Better

Tom Charlton joined the program to discuss the stable's large team of runners for Saturday at Randwick and beyond. He confirmed that the size of the team is simply how the schedule has fallen, with a similar number expected the following weekend. Stars in the Eyes will contest the 2000-metre race with Kerrin McEvoy aboard, as the stable continues to learn about the lightly raced import who is still acclimatising and likely to be most effective over a mile and a half in autumn. Klondike, who was impressive first-up off a long layoff, will skip Saturday and head straight to the St Leger, though he still needs to win to secure a Melbourne Cup ballot spot. King Pedro is the only acceptor in the Hill Stakes, returning from a minor setback that disrupted his spring. In the Alan Brown Stakes, Linebacker runs while Mr Chaplin heads to a midweek Rosehill race before The Big Dance. Sotono Glow and Payton both accepted for the Roman Consul Stakes, with Sotono Glow being aimed at the Coolmore Stakes. Napoleonic runs in the Sydney Stakes, possibly with blinkers. Mind Games, an impressive winner yesterday, will target Newcastle or Warwick Farm, with a possible Batman Stakes tilt.

Speaker 1A guest joins us from Randwick, the O'Shea Charlton, out of a number of runners in on Saturday. And Tom Charlton joins us. Morning, Tom. Hey, Dave. How are you this morning? Not too bad, thank you. You've got a big team lined up for Saturday. Is that just how the cookies have crumbled, or is this a race beating you guys wanted to target?
Speaker 2No, it's just the way it's fallen, really. We'll have quite a few next weekend at Randwick, probably a similar number. To this weekend, so I guess that's a good sign, hopefully.
Speaker 1A couple of dual-nommed stars in their eyes, dual-nommed, and narrowly went down by pinhole last start. So where will we land with stars in the eyes, or will we play barriers?
Speaker 2He's just accepted in the 2088, with mysteries in that race. Only one accepted in the hill, King Pedro.
Speaker 1Okay, so let's start then with stars in the eyes. So why did you. Go the 88, and who rides?
Speaker 2We were probably always keen to keep him in that grade and get to 2,000 metres. And Karen McEvoy will ride this weekend, with James in Melbourne, and Zach took another ride.
Speaker 1Okay. So, in time, where do you want this horse to get to? You've obviously got a bit of a wrap on him.
Speaker 2He's probably. He's certainly not there yet. In terms of being the finished product, he's still learning. He's still lightly raced. He still hasn't acclimatised over here. And we're probably still learning exactly what trip he's going to fit in. Probably feel like, you know, in the autumn, it'll probably be most effective to aggro a mile and a half. But it's just probably the right race for him at this stage.
Speaker 1And Mr. Riz is also in that race. So, another horse that looks to have, you know, potential. He wasn't beaten far behind pinhole last start either.
Speaker 2Yeah, he's a work in progress still. A talented horse that should have a future. But he's still a bit raw, a bit rough around the edges. Just a little bit hard on himself at times. But we've been really happy with the way he's progressing. And again, he's not the finished product by any means. And he won't be this preparation.
Speaker 1Your only acceptor was Klondike in the Hill Stakes. Sorry, King Pedro. King Pedro in the King Stakes. So, what's happening with Klondike? Just before I get to King Pedro.
Speaker 2Klondike was excellent off a first up of a long layoff in the Kingston town. We've elected to go straight to the St. Ledger with him next weekend. He's a naturally fit, lean-winded horse who probably appreciates that bit of time. Particularly off a good first up run off a long layoff. So, he'll go to St. Ledger next week.
Speaker 1Okay. So, St. Ledger next week. And then he's building towards Melbourne.
Speaker 2Well, we'd love to. But it'll be. He won a group two previously, but I believe that was a while ago. So, he's still not in the ballot. So, he would need to probably win one of his next two starts to give that any consideration.
Speaker 1Okay. So, King Pedro, your only runner in the Hill. He had that small setback before the Metrop.
Speaker 2Yeah. He just. Just, unfortunately, happened at the wrong time. And just meant we're slightly on the back foot in terms of, you know, spring and potential Cups aspirations. So, we'll see how he runs this weekend. It's obviously a bit short of his best trip. But he's going well. And, yeah, we're looking forward to seeing him back.
Speaker 1In the Alan Brown, you did have both Mr. Chaplin and Linebacker heading that way. Did they both accept?
Speaker 2Just Linebacker accepted there. It obviously looks a really, really strong race on paper. Looks like a handicap group one, as you'd expect for the money. So, Linebacker was excellent the other day in what was a slowly run race. But he got home, I think, fastest 600 at the race. And he's still building forward nicely this preparation. So, yeah, we're looking forward to seeing where he fits in this weekend.
Speaker 1Okay. What happens with Mr. Chaplin now? Well, he's a big
Speaker 2dance qualifier already. So, he'll most likely run next week at Rose Hill on the midweek card in an 88-1500. And then that will probably then see him into the big dance.
Speaker 1Concrete Storm, did you accept on the back of that midweek win the other day in the gloaming?
Speaker 2Yeah, we're going to have a look. He's another horse who's going to be better in the autumn. He's going to be better in the autumn. He's still, despite winning, just can make the odd mistake. But, you know, we thought he'd fit into this race quite nicely if he drew well. So, yeah, we'll have a look at acceptances.
Speaker 1I presume, by the way, I should have asked you. So, Linebacker, Zach?
Speaker 2Linebacker, Zach, yes.
Speaker 1Zach Lloyd, Concrete Storm. Is Zach riding Concrete Storm?
Speaker 2No, he was on David Payne.
Speaker 1So, Karen's on Concrete Storm. Karen on McAvoy. And King Pedro, I presume, Kieran McAvoy? Yes. Perfect. We go then to your Roman console, Noms. So, you did have Payton and that very, very smart Sotono Glow, who you've got a big opinion of. So, are they both heading there or just one?
Speaker 2Yeah, they're both accepted. Payton, he was due to run the other day at Warwick Farm. Unfortunately, just had a slight barrier mishap as they were about to jump. So, he just had a slightly misjointed preparation. You know, not the ideal prep we were hoping to have going into this race. So, you know, hopefully he can run well this weekend. And then we can perhaps look at a similar grade race, either in Melbourne or in Sydney. And Sotono Glow, she's accepted here as well, yeah. Okay. How's she going? She's going really well, yeah. Obviously, we were thrilled with her first up. You know, it was a good performance. And, you know, probably laid claims. To, you know, mark a path towards the Cornwall stakes at the end of the month. So, this is, you know, her prep race here. And, you know, hopefully she can run well. And we can give that some serious thought.
Speaker 1Who's riding her on the weekend? Zach's booked to ride her. Okay, perfect. So, and do you have to sort of long-range book him for a Cornwall?
Speaker 2No, we haven't done anything there yet. I think Jamie Mellon is pretty good. He's pretty keen. Obviously, we want to couple down the straight on her. But, yeah, look, we haven't really thought of that. So, I think we'll just get through the weekend and see if Zach can get this one right this time.
Speaker 1Because she seems pretty special. And I've spoken to John, and we mentioned this on radio about, you know, whether she was, you guys were approached for a Tab Everest for her. And he said, yes, yes, you were. But you said no, because you didn't want to sort of throw her in the deep. You know, and rattle her, so to speak, so early in her career. But she's obviously doing things at home that are pretty special for you guys to be talking the way you do about her.
Speaker 2Yeah, she, I mean, we don't do an awful lot with her at home. She's, you know, pretty straightforward and naturally sort of fit and clean-winded. But, you know, she arguably should be unbeaten if you just take that mishap of the person. She's got to get her dirty sights out. So, naturally, she's sort of curved her own performances on the track. And, you know, when she does win, she always looks pretty good. So, I guess, you know, that's the reason we're sort of so hopeful for her.
Speaker 1And just on another runner for the stable, Napoleonic. What's happening with him? Because he went down to the Manicato. He wasn't disgraced. He didn't get the result that you probably, you know, you guys wanted. What are you going to do with Napoleonic?
Speaker 2Yeah, he was a bit of a messy race for him the other day. He probably just never really got comfortable in the position he was. And perhaps, you know, a combination of poor field and perhaps just getting a little bit sort of tight for room, I guess. You know, he wasn't beaten too far, but definitely below par performance. So, we brought him back to Sydney. He'll go to the Sydney Stakes next weekend. We may experiment with some blinkers, which is something. We've always felt would help him. And, you know, probably still stand by, you know, a bit of juice in the ground. He'll also excel in. So, you know, he's passed that run in the Missile. You know, it was excellent. And that form's turned out to be strong. So, I guess, a return to course and distance. And getting him back to that form, you know, he could fit in nicely to that race.
Speaker 1Who rides in that Sydney Stakes? Zach Lloyd. Okay, so Zach Lloyd to ride Napoleonic. In the Sydney Stakes. Now, while I've got you, Tom, runners today on the Kenzo. You've got a runner in race two and race seven. Can you give a push to either?
Speaker 2Well, probably the best chance today is Phil, Punxsutawney Phil. He, you know, put two in a row and done them both impressively at both starts. This is obviously a good step up in grade. But from a good draw, you know, no reason why. he couldn't perform very well. today um and then chicks is seems to be going nicely in a in a trials this preparation probably just a small query on on the soft track perhaps not seen her at her best but it's time to time for her to get started um for the prep
Speaker 1okay and there is a text here about uh your current winners uh or some winners that you've had you had a horse called mind games win yesterday uh very impressive this is a horse that you've told us to follow um this texter goes how does the carbine club sound flemington
Speaker 2yeah probably not not a not a bad shout from the from the texter we're probably more inclined to go um either next saturday in a 64 mile newcastle or on the 21st of october at warwick farmers at 72 mile and we probably feel the race for him down in melbourne is called the batman stakes 1800 three-year-olds on melbourne cup day i believe it is so we'll obviously get through his next run but we'll probably feel that he looks like he's going to want further than a mile sooner rather than later
Speaker 1he is definitely wonderful though isn't he
Speaker 2yeah he's like we unfortunately had a foot abscess again that sort of messed up his his spring like we were going to see if he could get to a spring champion um so he he's probably he's still learning on the job but if he can have a productive prep this time um then he might be one that we can look to the autumn and he may even may even stay a derby trip
Speaker 1you know yeah perfect all right good to talk with you tom uh thanks for joining us good luck with runners today and over the course of the weekend very comprehensive
