I mean, every conversation we've had about potential big names that could potentially go somewhere has involved the sentence, you know, could be Matthews, could be Brady was one of the names. And sure enough, the Brady thing happened. I would say it happened fairly quietly without much conjecture around it. It just sort of happened. There was no like, oh, this talk is heating up. It happened. The only thing that makes me think that some people really knew what was happening for a long time. Our friend Doug McClain, May 19th, one month and three days ago. And then he has to go out there and make a trade with what was it four teams that he gave them that he would potentially go to. Well, yeah, but it sounds like he was. It's I mean, it's the right. You know what it is. It's a super regular ones that we all have to deal with. It's those I'll take offers in. We all know Doug McLean was right. Yeah, I'm only going to one to go to Florida. Right. So I would have made him play again this year. I want to take him for another year, you know, you and then traded him in the last year. No, you wouldn't have because all this noise already. I think there's players that are going to be really frustrated on some losing teams within a few years that are in markets where the fans don't carry go. How do I get to Chicago and play in 22 in front of 22,000 people? How do I play in Madison Square Garden? I don't think this is the new way. I think this is the new bad and people are dumb. Like, can we not have the conversation? We got Darren Radish on the line right now. The newest Toronto Maple Leaf. Darren, thanks for joining us. How are you? >> I'm doing great. How are you guys? >> We're good. So tell us about your last, what, you know, 48 hours or so in terms of, you know, the decision on signing a long term deal with the Leafs. At what point did you feel like, you know, something that you may be envisioned or fantasized became reality? >> Yeah. There was always some talk, you know, here and there through the end of the season. And I think kind of on Thursday, it kind of kind of hit me and came together. And yeah, I'm really excited to be joining the Leafs and excited for what's to come. >> Yeah. And I know the market is really excited to have you here. You know, how much do you, in terms of friends and family, what is your life like here? Is this where you spend your off seasons? Tell us about your ties to the area. >> Yeah. I grew up in Georgetown until I was about 12 years old and moved to Caledon. And that's kind of where I spent my summers at the off season. And yeah, you know, that's kind of what my family has been. And yeah, I haven't done too much downtown yet with all that. But yeah, mostly I tried to hit it in, I tried to get down there and to meet everyone and get it all going. >> Darren, it's been quite a journey in your professional career. Challenged, of course, to maintain a spot in your 20s. And now you had a breakout season last season with Tampa Bay. What were the challenges, you know, in the last 10 years that eventually led you to having this amazing season and this extraordinary contract of $68 million. >> I think if you know the perseverance, you know, you're not handed anything and you always have to work for whatever you're doing. And I think that's kind of been my mindset. That's kind of our whole family's mindset and it's installed from my grandmother. She says, "Oh, day by day." And you know, you tell you can do. And you know, just make sure you're working hard doing the right things. And that's kind of what I've, you know, based my whole career on. And yeah, if you're doing those things, you know, good things will happen. And, you know, I was fortunate to get an opportunity last year to, you know, the player in the first power play and play a lot of minutes. And, you know, just thankful for that opportunity. >> You know, certainly when you would have thought about coming up here, you would have looked at the roster some. Have you had, you know, any impressions from playing against this Toronto Maple Leafs team or what they have here? Did they have to do a lot of convincing to get you to sign on? >> No, not a lot of convincing. You know, they're a great hockey team. I know a lot of couple years. We've always struggled against them. And, you know, they got a lot of good pieces. And like I said, I'm just excited to be joining them and trying to help them win and trying to, you know, to try to get back to where they want to be. >> Have you had a chance during to meet some of your teammates? Are your friends with anyone on the roster already? Or is this something that will happen throughout the summer and then obviously lead you into training camp? >> Yeah, some guys have reached out already and, you know, not too many close friends on the team, but definitely guys that played against in junior and throughout our careers. And, you know, even if you guys threw it through my brother as well. So, yeah, you know, a lot of great guys on this team. And like I said, just let them forward to meeting everyone and, you know, getting the season going. >> Well, welcome to Toronto. We wish you the best. Thanks for joining us, Darren. >> No problem. And Ottawa isn't on their list. You cannot, you don't get the same apples to apples with the rest of the Leafs. >> Yeah, it's a much tougher pooled fish in. >> It's very tough. So even if you have the picks, you don't know. >> I guess they look at Toronto's different. >> You don't know who wants to go there. >> Yeah. >> So it's really difficult. There's a better chance that Stales will go get three $3 million players than $110 million player. >> It's brutal though. Like you can't turn yourself into Seattle. That's all you're doing. You can't go get it. >> That's the challenge. >> Yeah, you can't go BC out. So for the Leafs, I'm just saying that if you take a look at Kachuk, right, it should give you a feel on, you know, if you're at a point where Austin bails on you by the trade deadline or next summer, you know, it's a challenge to fill those. >> I do think that part of me is like if you do it sooner than later, like if there were four firsts out there for Austin, you know, and you look at the age of some of the young core guys you'd have and now with the McKenna thing, it would change things. So you said if they miss playoffs, it's a disaster. You'll lose Austin. I think you're looking at that scenario in January. If you're out of the playoffs in January, you're suddenly going, you can offer two playoff runs with this guy. I think the first four months of the season is crucial. >> Yeah, I mean, I don't know. I just, everybody just seems to convince the exact same things that happened with Brady and listen, I'm not going to sit here and I know what I'll tell you. I won't be putting anything in writing, making fun of Brady Kachuk leaving Ottawa because it definitely feels extremely possible here. But like, I don't know, you don't think the least could make the playoffs, I sure? >> I do. >> Yeah, I do. I think they're going to be right there in the thick of things with the rest of the three or four teams, Detroit, Buffalo, Ottawa. And Bobrovsky's in a position. I didn't have him on my trade board because he's pending UFA. Certainly his rights could be traded at any moment now. I'm not sure how surprised we will be considering that his contract demands for out of Florida remain really high to the point where I think he forgets his 37 years of age. Yeah. And may even forget that he had the worst season. He's 77. The worst season of his career. Yeah. Tell me, Sammy, from your perspective, and then we'll go to you, JB first and foremost, Sammy. But Bobrovsky to the Leafs does that excite you and your friends? I'm, I'm trying to lightly on this one. I listened to it. It does excite some of my friends for sure, but some of my friends are dumb. I've seen some things that we say these guys. It's great. No, but like listen, I am dumb as well. And it does, there's part of me. It all just goes back to Eddie Eagle. That's what it is. Just like the older goalie, supposedly done cup winner. That's like the, the, the pilot of his career. It's not going to work. He comes in. He's great at the end of his career. That's the comparison everybody's making. That doesn't tie me, but I don't think Eddie Eagles is going to get bail for. Did he not? Did he not do well here? He did. He was amazing. That's my comparison. Is that okay? He was good in Dallas and Kujo left and he came in and he was fantastic. And he was good, but I don't think he was going to get, I don't know, a massive contract that he's getting paid. I don't know. No, he got at the time a really good contract to come. For sure, but I don't think it's a long term one like Bob is maybe looking at. No interest. I'm out. And for that reason, I am out. Zero interest. Thirty seven years old. Terrible season last year. You know, what sort of track record is there? So what history of goalies being awesome in years 30 to 3940? There are a few Tim Thomas comes to mind. The list. I don't know how many names are on it, but I'm just skeptical. Like is I'm just skeptical that this guy is going to be better than Anthony Stollars or and and act him off or whatever other plan they have. I'm worried about the term they're talking about. Like it's already like, yeah, the 10 have term was long, but they'll figure what to do with that. The radish term is long, but they'll figure out what to do with that. You know, like we're doing this an awful lot and eventually you're the problems pile up. It was a two, it was a two year contract for Eddie Bell for by the way. And just one or a month or two, $2.5 million. Stanley Cup winning goalies were Freddie Anderson and Brandon Boosey just reminding everyone. Yeah. There are other ways to do it. Then six year gambles on what do you think? Yeah. I'm with JB. It be a pass for me as well. And I appreciate that he's an amazing shape and he takes care of himself, but what you cannot control is just that mother nature thing that eventually the reflexes start slowing down and the other one too. It's just there's no amount of doing the treadmill or lifting weights that could help a goalie. And can I just say like the most cynical thing ever? Did you know that Bob was this guy who took great care of himself prior to him needing a new UFA contract? Yeah. Yeah. I did. Yeah. I saw like three interviews on like always up. He works for three hours. I remember breakfast. And I was like, I remember he's in the show and he's like, he does it differently than anybody. Like he's always kind of been like that. That felt like an agent pushing some info out. Here's what I'll say about him though. Place. Place. That's great. Play bad last year, but place leaves have multiple goals. Would you be okay with? Not anymore. I could have two year deal. Yes. And it wouldn't matter. Yes. At eight or nine million dollars. Yes. Yes. But it won't be a two year deal. I mean, at about four side eight, two year contract at 37 years old on the Toronto Maple Leafs. I mean, let's do it again. Short term. I guess I've heard this like, he wants six years thing and that's maybe that's their camp setting the parameter. But he wants the Brad Martian deal. Who gets to wear number 72? Oh, Jesus. I just think and that's not to say he's still not a good goalie and he's he's incredibly talented, but I just don't see anybody having faith in his ability to stay healthy. It is clear. Is that is. So I mean, you're a lot if happier when he's maybe going to play 30 games with Sir Gabor Roske is starting goalie as opposed to playing 50 games. I started. I mean, again, he's just starting, I think a $16 million contract. Is he not? He hasn't started it yet. At three and a half. Sammy, what is the AV? I think it's isn't it four three and a half? Okay, so I don't know are they comfortable with Bob making eight maybe on a short turn deal? 3.75. So 11 or $12 million to your goal two goalies. And then you leave. Acting mob. You know, one of the things that struck me after the Brady Kitchock deal was like, there's all these big names of people who are rumored to potentially be moving knives. Maybe one of them, but it was like Robert Thomas and Jordan Cairo and it was Dylan Larkin. Matthew's name had come up. I forget exactly the top of my head, but there's a lot of big names that are potentially going to move. So many teams are there that want those guys and have the assets to get them. It has to be a pretty small pool of guys. And after that, it's like, I don't, you know, there's all these names. Who's going to pay for Jason Robertson or there's only so many teams that have the assets to acquire these guys. I don't think we're going to see. Well, it didn't take long for Jason Robertson to be a link to Ottawa at the moment. Brady could check left. And it took also the same amount of time after that to hear he would not sign a long term to deal in Ottawa. Don't do it. You think about everybody's like, Oh, just offer sheet them. An offer sheet requires two sides. The guy has to be like, Yes, I will agree to that offer sheet to sign there. I don't think he's going to do that in Ottawa. But think about what Ottawa would have to pay on an offer sheet that Dallas wouldn't make an image. Okay. Don't get into that Sebastian Aho Montreal Canadians scenario where I'm a favor. Here's a man like offer sheet in them at 8.5, which was the easiest match ever. You got to like blow it out of the water for a team to go. We're out. And Ottawa would need to get to almost 14. Right.
