Tim Dugger On What It's Like To Be Dale Jr.'s Bunkmate

Hey everybody, I'm Dylan Hart Jr. and this is the Dirty 30. The best highlights from all of our podcasts this week, 30 minutes, every single Friday, the Dirty 30 coming in. Let's get right to it. One of my favorite songs, there's a song called Dale Earnhardt, hot skillet, flickers. I think it's the name of the band, hot skillet, flickers, yeah, it is, dude. So let me tell y'all, I couldn't help it. Because they're every year, somebody sends me a Dale Earnhardt song, man, my buddy wrote a Dale Earnhardt song or this guy's making a Dale Earnhardt song or, you know, every year there's a Dale Earnhardt song and I'll be honest, man, all of them are that great. It's hard to write about him and they're all mostly sad or, oh man, you know, Dale Earnhardt. This song is not sad. This song is talking about how bad ass he is and it's just funny. I think it's a funny song. And so I was kind of thinking that this might be the last time that I get to curate the music for this game and I take a ton of shit for it because a lot of people do not like it. You're not gonna like, you're not gonna make everybody happy. But in this case, like when you make a soundtrack for a video game, you make a lot of people unhappy. And so I was like, you know, I'm just gonna put this song in there. I don't care what anybody says. So if you get a chance to listen to it, it's pretty funny. The band's not together anymore, but they were thrilled. I'd heard back that they were thrilled that we considered and put them in there. I put Tim Dugger in there last year. We didn't put Tim in. And everybody said, damn, I'm surprised he didn't put Tim in there, his buddy. So this year, I was like, oh, all right. What's all your ass? You know, get some Tim Dugger next year, so put Tim in there. This song, do you know? Mama tried. He does and Mama tried. It's pretty good. Let me see here. I'm gonna say a lot of songs. And these are the ones that I put in there. I didn't choose every song. I only chose about half the songs. All the same by sick puppies, bad ass song. Let them know by T.I. Bad ass song. Great. The T.I. I mean, NBC was using them this week. That song. Yeah. I feel like you're the first one though. He, right, he puts a song out and you're like, this new, that's 2000s right. Sounds like, sounds like it could be old, but I've never heard it. And turns out T.I. Steel has it. The hot skillet liquors, they learn hard, great song. What it is to burn by Finch, bad ass song, Tim Dugger, Mama tried. Angels and Airwaves tunnel, amazing record. Every song on that is the best. Angels and Airwaves is as good as Blink and a lot of people want to agree with that. Citizen Coat. Sun's going to rise. Citizen Coat. Good friend of mine. Been listening to his music for 20 years. Just a great song. Steven Wilson Jr. He's a bad ass now, but I heard year to be young, 1994 years ago. Tim Dugger sent me that song, said, listen to this. I think you'll like it. Never had heard Steven Wilson Jr. before and he was, no one knew who he was. Tim sent me that song. Speaking of Steven, somebody asked early in the chat, have you heard Corner Man? I think it's one of your newer songs. DMX, where the hood at? Oh, we put that in there. That's DMX. Reasons by Alien Ant Farms, Alien Ant Farms, dude, I was a massive fan of theirs back in the day. Yeah. I always kind of go back and look at the bands that I love 20 years ago to see if they're making new music. And they were Alien Ant Farms, put out, Alien Ant Farms, put out Reasons this year. I was like, this is a pretty good song. I bet other people will like this song. And then I didn't choose this one. Steve Myers did, but I love it. So coughing super bonbon. Just a bad ass song. Move upside let the man go through is a great line. You could talk about, you know, how that's a great line in racing. I'll tell you a little bit of a hint about sweet home Alabama. Yes, sweet home Alabama has been used in other games. We thought that would be a good intro for the, for the game. And without getting into details, we had a budget. You got to be able to fit all these songs in that budget. People were like, oh man, look at this playlist. I could do better than that. And they made, you know, they go out on social media and be like, here's my playlist. Look at my, I could do better. Look at it. Look at it. I did better. And I'm like, yeah, that's going to cost you about three million bucks. And so we don't have three million dollars. And so we had to kind of fit all of this and we had to throw songs that we wanted, that we, you know, badass songs that a lot of people love, we had to throw some of them out because they weren't going to fit. But Leonard Skinnerd was going to be the most expensive song. But you know what they said? They said you pay us what the second most expensive song is. Whatever that number is is what you pay us, which I thought was really nice. Wow. They could have said, you know, we want $100,000. But now they said, just pay us as much as you're playing the next, paying the next guy. It's cool. Super cool. And then you go to the second guy and say, we'll pay you what other third guy pays. Yeah, that'd be nice. Bring it all down. Yeah. All the other songs, other people had influence and put them in, they're great songs. But those are the ones that I, that I chose. I like to get drunk and then get my feels and I will get home and I will turn on Armageddon and I will watch Armageddon drunk and cry. Oh, like late night, like do you go out to the bars? Yeah. Then you come home and watch Armageddon. Oh my God. The scene where he brings the little toy and it's like, that's not a salesman, that's your daddy. Cry. Cry. And Terrod's like, Terrod Armageddon now, I have it wide open. I actually have a YouTube link that only shows that scene and plays a smith. I don't be going and climbing in bed. No. But we don't. I got to, you know, I got to prove to everybody that I'm still up, everybody's in bed and that's what I do. Like, and I've, I've lost, I don't actually know, I'm not going a lot of myself. I'm not lost to step. I think I've lost to step. I think I'm in my prime. I have lost. You have. You lost to step for two. Oh yeah. Yeah. I like it. I think we were in Key West, what, a year or so ago and we drank hard for two days. And me and you was at a bar and we both ordered a rebel vodka and tried to get back on the horse and we're like, ah, they just ain't happening. Let's go to bed. And this is something that a lot of people don't know about Dale and I think this is great. I like if I'm sleeping, I want it dark, cold, no TV, no music. Well, if you run with Dale, you get an old race radio broadcast throughout the night. I mean, you roll over and imagine you're drunk. You got the rebel vodka and Zoddy that's kicked in. And it's like, well, 32 to go here, darling, I don't know what I'm saying about it. No, no, no, no. You know, many parsons here and I'm like, and then they'll roll over and I'm like, hey, your dad's running seventh. He's like, yeah, he blows up though, and he rolls back over. And I'm like, if anybody could see this man sleeps NASCAR. And Terrible Texting me. How's it going? I go, oh no, damn, listen to die hard 500 last night and have anxiety and my stomach's hurting a little bit. The night, I've hung over. I know, I know who won the 2000 or the 1982 die hard 500. Yeah. And you know, Dale bit man at Barney Hall, he sure didn't know how to do it, didn't he? So me and Tim, we'll stay at the marker and it's right next to Scooters, perfect, because you're going to start at Scooters, you're going to end at Scooters. So you got a short walk to the hotel room and we'll just get a damn double and crash into the same room together. And so I will, we get in the room and I'll put on a MRN classics. And I got a picking hole when we ain't listening to one from the 90s or 2000s. We're going into the 80s, maybe even the 70s. There's names that I've never even heard and I thought I'd need that scar. And dude, I'll turn it on real low. And it's usually Barney Hall and he's like Barney Hall here at Atlanta Motor Speedway getting ready to start to trend, you know, Atlanta 500, Benny Parsons on the pole, Bobby Allison on the outside pole and it starts going through the, and it's like dude, it just puts me right to sleep. And it calms me down because I'm, we've been drinking Raisin Hill all day and you go and you go, you go into bed and you're like, if you lay in bed, you're like, can I need to do that? And I really need to do that today. God, I don't feel like shit in the morning. You know? Yeah, you get, I think you now, since you got the girls, you're like, I should be at, I should be at home. I should be at home. You feel guilty. Yeah. You're like, you know, one day's enough, I don't need to any more and, and so that Barney Hall he calms me down. Yeah. It's, it's funny. I remember what I ruined with you and Amy one time and I rolled over and Amy's is looking at me She's like I've been watching you. I thought you were gonna die like three times Cuz you're slower than the way you breathe I've been watching you waiting for you to die And I get up and I'm like Yeah, I walk right to the bar That's my favorite thing now Yeah, it's to be at scanners about eight or nine. Yes, and the old old geezer there I mean the people that have the stories that This one guy was talking to him. He's like yeah, I work at home depot and I stock over night I get off at six and I'll come park here asleep in my truck for two hours Be here when they open at eight. I'll drink to a noon and I'll go home and go to bed because I got to go back in at six I'm like that. That's that routine is tough. Yeah, he does seven days a week. Holy shit He's like yeah, you turn this place into a honky talk when you come in here. Yeah, it's a music. Yeah We can go chase standings talk about that You're nine ahead Thank you Travis for that I Don't think much changed inside the top eight, right? Only three Lagano Lagano changed because he was Do you have the old sheet? I have it over here. Yeah He was remember we were saying last week. It's the top seven. He was eight. Yep. It was the top seven because then there was a gap to eight, right? No him and Elliott were both 72 back and then Bubba was 81 back But Lagano now put himself now in the fifties, right? So I would argue now that yeah, that the top eight feels I Think that top eight still feels pretty good about it. I see we were saying yes Larsen was ahead of Lagano at 49 back. That's what you're asking right. There was a jump there. Yeah, yep So I think that this was a good race for Lagano in the sense of that he put himself back in the in the picture of this conversation and and so He was one of three drivers that made up ground on you and that was it was him, Larsen, and then host of our made up one point Got you Yeah, I mean What they do they do we just we just have to get Better you know what I mean? We we've got to have mistake for your races. I got to do a better job on the restarts Just got executed a you know, we're it's just been tough Going back where we've gone back at that time of the race and not having you know enough enough time to really claw it back and So it's you know, I feel very fortunate. I said that I felt blessed to still have the lead. I believe that But I feel like our notebook is very solid from here on out. It's all tracks that We ran mostly in the spring Got that information take it learn from it should be should be better if yeah, you had 10 races if you had to like Ranked them on like you know confidence. Where would you have put these first two races at in that not not super high Because darling to I told you we we struggled the last couple of years at Darlington I think we answer we we were better. We were definitely better at Darlington than what we'd been over the last two years And then here Obviously not as good as last year, but we also kept our track position last year You know when you keep your track position and the races seem a lot a lot easier and with all those cautions I mean, I think the cautions is really what kind of screwed legano and not winning this race right is that eventually got caught by the guide that Took tires four cautions ago. Yeah, so it sounds like you're not you're not all that concerned with the car That's being brought to the racetrack every weekend. It's just an execution thing like it what where I think well I think execution is far what's hindering us The most on not having better days I Really truly believe that we would have continued for the Wannett at Darlington But obviously that we were not we were not a contending car here however after five laps We're actually pretty good. I know it probably didn't look like it We probably look like an absolute non-factor trust me. That's how it felt in the car so but But if you if you look at the lap times we're actually we were okay. It's not like we were You know horrible we just Things just it was execution. It was restarts those two things we fixed those two things Will be okay, so we're not panicking because one fan in this room. No, you know how lucky we are To be in this position right, but that's not a say a good thing, right? Yeah, it is what if you have she if you use if you have your races early and you're still leading and you haven't even hit You're stride yet Basically, I had two Mullgens. Yeah, you I think you feel good about that. I feel good about that You know, we've had a 35 point day to 33 point day we've had a wreck and horrible execution and Horrible restarts and still 33 and 35. I think I think we We take this and say onward. Yeah someone who is someone pointed out on on Twitter It's a credit to 11 team because these last two weeks should have been a DNF and a 25th place finish, but it's not a question, but instead it's a Make something out Bubble Wallace could not have given Josh Barry any more room while going for positions spot-on spot-on I'm just picking up one wreck. Yeah, what position? What rep is this? Yeah, I don't know what purpose we were passing for You're on the ruffle strips. Yeah, exactly. We can't get any lower than that, but where were you before that? What do you mean? Whoa going into one? Where was I just? Oh Throw it right in there. Well, you leave a lane on the bottom. There was no lane throw what in there? We're down there We're at his door, but now why are we going all the way to the wall? Why do you hit the ruffle strips? Because we're loose because the guy turned down on the soul You hit the ruffle strips and shot you up the strip. Because you weren't supposed to be there in the first Why not because what's with the move? I will say he's going he's gonna go there You have to go there because of the air. Yeah, like he has to go there, but he's not gonna make the pass You're not I don't know let's retract let's retract this look come back So that's fine when there's only one car Above you you got to know that that 21 is not gonna be able to move up and get out of the way because of the 20 don't need him to move up We just need him not to come down. Oh my god. He's race. They're listen What as much as I want to like disagree with Freddie every single guy in that field pretty much is gonna fill that gap right there I'm Yeah, they're gonna feel that if you leave that much room right there They're gonna fill the gap and now we're at his door. Don't come down I want to see where the 20 moves a little bit You wouldn't have wrecked unless the 20 didn't hit the 21 and kind of like pop it back into you Like you were gonna you were good Take any lower can't get any lower on the racetrack to me That's just a racing incident to you guys. They're all trying to fill the gap here lame Josh It's not like I think Josh turned down on us like on purpose trying to cause a wreck But you're we're gonna you have to take that hole because if you if you follow Josh We're gonna get tightest and be up to 24's door and probably get split down the back stretch You want to talk about the brisco wreck earlier at the end of the day Even if you come off the corner clean He's not making you still we're gonna get passed by the 24 Yes, because it a momentum. Yes. Yes, because you would have had a 24 is gonna be boxed in ego and nowhere But if you come up clean a 24 is gone if we come off clean the 24 is still outside of 21 and we're gonna be we're gonna be Bottom of three at his door in the three Which is where I want to be if everybody comes off the corner normal I think they beat you down the straightaway because yeah, yeah, I'm gonna say that's what you can't but TJ You know, this is I think you should have went I would have went there. Yeah, I think everybody The problem is is Bubba had to go there because of the air in my opinion He can't run the middle right there. He'll never turn behind Josh right there No, like and he's and Josh slides up and just gives him even more air I mean, he's gonna they're all gonna fill that gap and I think it closed up It's a very low percentage pass move. I agree with you there like he's not gonna make that you're not doing that Is it a low percentage pass move and a high percentage chance of wrecking? I mean, it's late in the race and it's a wreck fest. So it's gonna happen. Yeah I know but you got this is what tanked my DVC picks right? You got you got you got points points and points and points buddy. I don't see points Yeah, well you don't have to because you're last. Hey, I saw some other low percentage moves this weekend You know the but even with the brisco one to the brisco one you know, we get a really good restart Priests or whoever was in front of Priests got a really bad restart and and we had a massive run on the 19 We take him three wide he ends up taking Priests three wide, which actually puts us all four wide and that one I think you know Again, we're on the rumpel strips. We get so low that we hit the rumpel strips and get loose Because the 19s kind of on our door again can't get any lower than we are strips again. Yeah. Can't get any s**t lower. How long do you want him to go? Like, sorry. If I tell you right now that people can be like, "Oh, you're f**king bumpin' nose and wrong." If Bubba would have drove in there, slid up a half a lane into somebody's door to say, "He's a f*****e." He shouldn't have done it. You're filling holes. You're putting your cars low as it can go on the racetrack. And both RECs turned it for him, turned it guys, turning down to the side of us. We can't go any lower on the racetrack. Everybody's gonna take that run like TJ said. I mean, if you don't-- I mean, if you don't-- And if you don't-- Yeah. So even the restart. If they stack up in front of you on a restart and you just say, "Ah, you know what? It's a low percentage move. I don't want to go down there. I'll guess what happens." Middle of three. Middle of three. Because now you're getting swallowed up from every side behind you the second you don't take any run. So it's just-- You don't have a choice in some of these instances. And I'm sorry. If Bubba would have done something where he drove in there and wiped everybody out from the bottom to the top, like the 70s has been a lot of suede. He's done it before. Yeah. For sure. I mean, listen. He's just done. And I've talked about how hard he's the-- one of the hardest guys to race on the racetrack. But I want him to make that move 10 times out of 10. And you just hope you get a little more room if you don't. You're wrecking. And you move on. But like-- Well, it all worked out for him. Because he's kind of hoping-- when you make that move, you're kind of hoping-- because I'm not going to lie. I think the spotter-- they were probably-- would you call three outside right there? Or you get close to it? Because-- Yeah, I was bottom of three. Yeah. But you were about to be four wide. Because that 24 was-- Well, I just said bottom of three still, like because the 24 is going to fill behind the 20. Even if the-- like, I didn't want him to think the 21 was going to get clear of the 20 and be able to move. Like, you're still bottom of three. And you have to make the move, anyway, because if the 21 gets into the-- whatever he was racing. Yeah, if he gets into the 20 and they get checked up at all, you can't be behind them right there. You want to be making your move. Yeah. It's-- It's just end of the race. It's not 1995 anymore time. We got to race. Hey, it's just short track. Damn. Next. Why do you guys call him Rumble Strips? You can just say it one time. Come on. Just cuss one time at me. And it's like, nope. Not going to do it. And I'm like going on and on with this thing going, it's okay. You can just say the F bomb. I want you to just say it. And it's like, absolutely not going to do it. And his is over here cussing up a storm. I mean, just in common, very common, conversational with him. And so there's these settings in there that you can tell it to be more cynical, more smart assy, whatever. And so I'm going through trying to turn my settings to where mine will start cussing and it just won't do it. And, but eventually we kind of got bored and we had, we figured out how to get them to talk to each other. We were like, hey, chat, you're going to talk to another chat. And we want you guys to have a conversation. And so they started talking about it. Actually knew it was talking to another chat, not a person. I don't remember really. At this point, we're like, this is post dinner. This is like 12 beers in, but they did communicate back and forth. And I've seen this on social media where you can get them like this one guy on social media had one chat be box and then the other one wrapping over it. What? And it was completely awful and they couldn't, they didn't, they couldn't do it. Like it would have been really great if the chats, they did this well, but they did not. But it was just really funny. I didn't know you could do that. Well, you can't. I also think it's quite funny and ironic that your chat won't cuss at you or cuss with you. Especially because you cuss a lot. Do you want me to ask it? Cussing constantly. You want to hear what it, do you want me to ask it? I kind of do. Yeah. Okay. Here it goes. Hold on. Hey, how's it going? I'm good, man. How's the, how's the morning treating you? Hey, will you say the, the F word one time? I can't say it just for shock value, but I'm happy to help you strong language, if you're holding something or writing something. I want you to say the F word just once.
