Brian Dawkins shares a personal journey with major depressive disorder, emphasizing the importance of mental health support and medical intervention. He discusses Caplyta, a medication used alongside antidepressants for depression, detailing its benefits and significant risks such as increased mortality, weight gain, and metabolic issues, stressing the need for medical supervision. The conversation then shifts to ZepBound, a weight management drug with specific contraindications and potential serious side effects, including pancreatitis and allergic reactions. The podcast also delves into sports commentary, where hosts critique the Red Sox and Yankees, expressing deep frustration with team performance and ownership decisions, particularly the Red Sox’s perceived decline. A humorous anecdote about Nick Robertson’s birthday on 9/11 and fan reactions to it adds levity. The discussion then turns to hockey, with praise for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ dominant start and a critical look at the Philadelphia Flyers’ poor performance and lack of recovery. The hosts also highlight the evolving dynamics of team strategies, player development, and fan culture, concluding with a lighthearted take on player personalities and media reactions. The tone blends personal health advocacy with spirited, often ironic sports commentary.
I'm pro-football Hall of Famer Brian Dawkins, and I lived for a long time with something I did not
know the name of, major depressive disorder. I carried sadness and anger because I thought I
could handle it alone, but I couldn't. Now I want to make sure others know that that support is out
there. If you're experiencing similar symptoms, talk to a healthcare professional. Visit mddallies.com
to watch my story. Paid partnership with Johnson & Johnson. Brian Dawkins is not prescribed
Caplyta Lumateperone. I needed more from my antidepressant, so my doctor added Caplyta
Lumateperone, proven to provide greater relief from depression symptoms than an antidepressant
alone, building on my progress without starting over. Caplyta is for adults with major depressive
disorder when used with an antidepressant and is available by prescription only. Individual
results may vary. In clinical trials, weight gain was not common.
Patients have increased risk of death or stroke. Caplyta is not approved for dementia-related
psychosis. Call your doctor about new or sudden mood changes, behaviors, or suicidal thoughts
right away. Antidepressants may increase these risks. Report fever, confusion, stiff muscles,
which may be life-threatening, or uncontrolled muscle movements, which may be permanent. High
cholesterol and weight gain may occur, as can high blood sugar, which may be fatal.
Monitoring is recommended. Common side effects are sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth,
feeling tired, and diarrhea. These aren't all the side effects. Ask your doctor about Caplyta.

It is Thursday, October 1st, Sabres and Sharks game day in the United States and Canada.
And this is a show called What Chaos from Boston, Massachusetts.
My name is David Bean. I sit beside Pete Blackburn, holding it down in the city of the road team.
It's Sean DePaz.
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
Just smashing.
I've said that a million times for you, buddy.
Happy baseball season.
Oh, God.
Oh, I was like, what?
I was like, why are we?
Be one of them, dude.
The Red Sox are a joke, man.
Oh, yeah.
It brings me no.
I have Yankees fans, friends.
They talk so much shit in the group chat last night.
Couldn't say a goddamn thing.
Couldn't say a goddamn thing because the Red Sox are a joke.
Three runs in 18 innings.
What are you supposed to do with that?
Absolute joke.
I feel like the Red Sox have straight up.
I feel like the Red Sox.
Ownership has straight up killed my my love for baseball.
I think you would not be baseball.
Yeah, I was going to say you would not be alone in Boston and thinking that
and Jaron Duran killing everybody's vibe for everything.
Yeah, I mean, like, I'm not the biggest Jaron Duran guy,
but it is truly like the ownership's fault.
Well, I did.
I said it before, but like, I feel like I can't get attached to players.
I feel like I can't respect the way that they go about their business.
They've turned my beloved franchise and the religious cult that is Red Sox fandom
into a fucking brand and go ahead and hit the stop whining.
No, I was going to do this one.
But then I was also going to stop whining.
There you go.
So, all right, baseball's over.
Cool.
Fucking clean house.
I hope that John Henry disappears into dust at some point.
All I care about now is that the New York Yankees don't want a World Series.
And that is the silver lining.
Anytime the Yankees beat the Red Sox in the playoffs
is that they are one step closer to a World Series,
which means their fans' hopes are that much higher,
which means when they inevitably fuck up,
or when Aaron Boone, more accurately, inevitably fucks up,
it will feel that much better for me.
Because I've explained to people before,
I think the strongest feeling I feel in my sports fandom,
stronger than my love for any individual team,
is my hatred for the New York Yankees.
But you, the, oh man, I can't wait for the Yankees fans to get their hopes up for,
or when they inevitably lose.
That I reserve for a few fan bases,
and the Yankees are not one of them.
Because if the Yankees lose,
it would be like when the Patriots lost.
You're like, ah, goddammit,
I really thought we were gonna win the Super Bowl every year.
It also, like, it takes a lot of air out of the mocking the Yankees
when they lose, when Yankees fans can just be like,
your team's a fucking joke, and we wiped the floor with you,
and you can't get out of September.
No, but the Yankees haven't won a World Series since 2009.
The Red Sox have won three in that time frame.
At least it looks like they're trying these days.
Not, like, far be it for me to defend the Yankees,
but at least it looks like they're fucking trying to win the World Series.
What, didn't the Red Sox have t-shirts that say, like,
built for October, by the way?
I don't know.
It said something like, built for October, or, like, here for October.
And they, uh, famously did not make it to October.
The Yankees. What do you mean, what am I talking about?
The Yankees are also a wildcard team.
It's not like they ran away with the division or something.
They were hardly better than the Red Sox this year.
I'm not, I'm not, like, denying the fact. Oh, I don't know about hardly better.
The Red Sox got into the playoffs because they had one cool winning streak.
Okay, well, first off, you think I'm gonna sit here and be like,
oh, team got into the playoffs based on one cool winning streak,
so it doesn't, it's not valid?
Uh, your cool winning streak was most of the season, also.
Yeah, listen. Like, Red Sox winning, cool winning streak was also, like, most of the season.
But, like, your, like, your cool, your team's cool winning streak
had carryover effects for the rest of the season.
The Red Sox cool winning streak was just an isolated winning streak
and then they returned to being a pretty bad baseball team
and then remained a pretty bad baseball team.
And it weren't, not to talk too much baseball
because I don't really follow it anymore, like,
nobody was like, oh, yeah, they're winning now.
They're gonna be able to, like, this is an offense they've got here.
Like, they got to the end and how many runs did they score
in this two-game series?
Three.
There wasn't, like, it was, uh, they're not good.
The Canucks knocked that out in four minutes.
Four minutes, brother.
I'm just saying, the Yankees are also not that great.
So, and they haven't won a World Series in over a decade.
The Red Sox have won multiple.
So, them beating the, like, that doesn't matter to them.
I mean, like, it matters to me, but who cares?
They also haven't won shit.
I will remind folks, this is a hockey podcast.
So, Landon Donovan, shut the fuck up saying that the Rebs are. Did you hear what Landon Donovan said about the New England Revolution?
I did not, no.
He said, if the. Oh, yeah, he said, if they were. He said, if they were, like, if they had the biggest stars in the world or whatever,
and they were down the street, and somebody gave him tickets, he wouldn't go.
He said, if they were three-quarters of a mile down the road,
and somebody handed him tickets, he would not go.
That, Landon Donovan, is, sorry to pull rank on you,
that is you not knowing ball.
If somebody tells you there is an MLS game nearby,
and they hand you tickets, you fucking go.
Because, as Sean will tell you, Sean, like, goes to Toronto FC games.
Toronto fucking sucks, but every MLS,
every MLS game is crazy and awesome.
Or close.
Both games I went to, the first one was a massive mistake,
because I missed the end of it to go to a baseball game,
and there were three goals in the last five minutes of the game.
And then the last game I went to, I think it was,
it was Robert Lewandowski, and they ended in a 4-4 draw.
And Toronto tied the game in, like, the 93rd minute.
It was fucking incredible.
And then I walked outside, and it was the Toronto,
or it was the Canadian Expo, like, the national fair.
And there was a pit bull concert across the street.
It's a. It was a fucking party.
I'm pro MLS.
Also, chat, I respect everybody for being here.
Shut the fuck up, respectfully.
What are they doing?
Saying, get to hockey.
It's two days into the season.
Get to hockey.
We get to do whatever the fuck we want on our show,
but especially in the first ten minutes.
Oh, yeah.
Especially in the first ten minutes.
We get to do whatever the fuck we want.
Shut up.
And we're only eight minutes in.
Yes.
So. Two more minutes.
I haven't even broke. I've been listening to a lot of shins lately.
I'd like to tell you. I'm going to tell you all about it.
Going to see Digger tomorrow.
Are you coming?
No, I can't tomorrow, unfortunately.
I'm going to see it in VistaVision.
They say that when a movie seems like it's going to be pretty bad,
if you see it in VistaVision, it's good.
All right.
That's a pro tip for you.
All right.
But then you don't have a real read on Digger.
Because if you see it in VistaVision,
you're going to think it's good no matter what.
That's true.
I'm going to have VistaVision-colored glasses on.
Exactly.
But again, we were talking about this yesterday.
We were like,
So what if Digger does suck?
Then it's, "Oh, I went and saw
bad tom cruise movie like that's those are some of my most uh cherished memories i love going
still gonna want to have that in your bag to be able to reference oh yeah yeah i'm not worried
and there are enough movies this year that seem like they're gonna be fucking awesome or have
been awesome the digger being bad actually i have space for digger being bad and uh primetime having
been bad i think kind of works out like i'm a uh bola negra guy hasn't come out yet but i'm all my
stocks are in there and all my socks are in uh godzilla minus zero godzilla minus zero what's
the western one that's uh coming up that it's like a western-ish kind of funny movie oh with
um with john malkovich yeah i forget the name of that one but i'm very excited yeah the movies are
coming
let's go
let's talk hockey you fucking are you fucking happy now
are you fucking happy now uh sean what's on the show let me know we don't but pete's not happy
to do this by the way okay he's doing you a favor bud uh today on the show get ready to learn not
shutting the fuck up we got off to a good start there yeah we got off to a good do you know what
that means get ready to learn not shutting the fuck up i do know what that means that means we are
halfway to you not shutting the fuck up about the pittsburgh penguins yep famously declared in
the season preview that if the penguins won their first two games you weren't going to shut the fuck
up about it and the penguins i i feel like maybe their first win should count that count they get
four points yeah so uh we'll talk about the pittsburgh penguins we'll also talk about can't
spell alternate captain that this is maybe the best today on the show i've ever written
can't spell alternate captain dot dot dot without a c
close ish you're on the right oh i got it i got it i got it what is it you can't spell an alternate
you can't spell alternate captain without four a's wow there you go that's a big good yeah nice
one uh like wheel of fortune or something that was awesome yes a seventh team with four a's has hit
the nhl uh shana joins that one's pretty self-explanatory but a really really hard hitting
one as well because shana
goldman greatest friend of the show love to have her she's gonna be great uh and finally language
police uh and the sheriff of the police department is apparently one nathan mckinnon it's exactly who
i want in charge of i was gonna say in charge of any police but i feel like if nathan mckinnon
were in charge of the police we'd be getting a lot of like defund the police or abolish the police
from every group yeah because they'd just be scared yes
you're right i'm not sure if you're right or not i'm not sure if you're right or not
yeah i feel like community policing would take a real dip if nathan mckinnon was the chief of police
yeah so he's not police for now but not in any problematic way it's just that nathan mckinnon
doesn't really have time for you or me yeah like if you complain if you're like hey there are some
people outside my uh home and i'm afraid of what they might be trying to bring he'd be like
what's your problem and you'd be mad at them too but he'd be like
why are you calling me be a lot of uh search warrants for pantries yeah and he'd uh he'd also
he'd say like oh i don't think you know what a crime is maybe you've never seen a crime before
remember when we said that about uh people who were saying the power play didn't look good
because they weren't scoring on the power play and he was like yeah well that's because our fans are
fucking idiots okay so avalanche fans who were on pete's case last night because he made a very good
connor garland reference i believe it was a connor garland reference yeah a bunch of abs fans told me
to kill myself
because i was made a good joke about nathan mckinnon that wasn't even like disparaging of
nathan mckinnon it was maybe disparaging of connor garland which i'm always doing it's like a very
pro nathan mckinnon joke and abs fans were like kill yourself so shut that mid-season form already
and nathan mckinnon doesn't like you okay so you cannot like pete all you want he's in his bag right
now we protect him at all costs here come the penguins the penguins go into philadelphia and
they're 7-0 in their opener sean could you show us how this game ended please
this will be only the fifth shutout in philadelphia by the penguins
last one all the way back in 2000 penguins win it 7-0 as she loves stops all 19
she loves stops all 19 and i believe ladar allows all seven i think they kept him in that whole
game oh i thought you meant like it's seven for seven i was like i don't think he went like he
went shots i think he went over seven that was tristan jari the other night yeah no there were
some points where like nick robertson was gonna shoot and he was like ah you know what this one's
a little lower i know that the old danny's having a bad night i'm gonna save this for later i need
a higher percentage chance this was a an unbelievable start for anybody who said the other day that we
all agree the penguins
after being the surprise playoff team of last year and not just a surprise playoff team like a
surprise not picking first overall team yeah and made the playoffs and we talked about we were like
they're not gonna do it again they can't do it again but i did say if they win their first two
games of the season sean face i don't be shutting the fuck up about it they win their first game
on the road in philadelphia seven to nothing and not only is it an ass kicking
but dubious fleece watch is back on for nick robertson for nick robertson whom they got for a
20 28th fourth round pick this is a 25 year old forward who averaged or i would say at the last
three seasons in toronto his only full seasons in the nhl full some of them he played like 50
games or whatever but i calculated what his 82 game pace would be scoring wise 18 goals
they got him i'm not saying he's great right but they got him for a 20 28th fourth round pick
he scores two goals hendrix lapierre a 24 year old that they got for a 20 27 third and 20 28
fifth this offseason a goal and an assist and i'll also throw into that this was a couple off
seasons ago now but archer shelovs whom we thought he kind of stole for chase stillman and a 20 27
fourth 19 save shutout on the road so no goals from
who says that no uh that would be you see sorrows you see sorrows voice no goals for sydney crosby
one goal point yeah one point that's a nice points where's the rest of them your team scored seven
goals fucking do something you you you you get you got uh hab's eyes on right now you're dreaming
about playing in washington or wherever you want to go gino malkin one goal but the story of this
game is a second you
were saying in the chat like a second robertson has hit the nhl he'd already hit the nhl he was
already an okay player toronto dumps him hilarious and looks like the penguins now have at least
some more shit to play with as i was saying like why'd you let ryan shay go what kind of
offseason did you have so far pretty fucking cool yeah did you uh did you understand the uh
a second robertson has hit the nhl joke i mean a second blank has hit the blank yes but
that's because he was born on 9-11 yes a bunch of people were finding out yesterday that nick
robertson was born on actual 9-11 that has to be a real tough uh tough experience for a parent
i would say people had worse experiences on 9-11 2001 i would agree but i mean i more mean it as
like it is a uh a really tough grappling of different emotions what am i bringing like
what kind of world am i bringing a child into because everyone always asks that where they're
like god do i want to bring a child into a world where they're like god do i want to bring a child
into this world terrible day terrible day to bring a child in this world but also like that
you want to look back on the the birth of your child is one of the happiest days of your life
what are you going to tell people that 9-11 was one of the happiest days of your life devastating
day throughout a lot of content horrible horrible horrible but silver lining nick robertson
silver lining of 9-11 no no no i'm saying silver lining for those for the parents being like
what a fucking horrible day we don't do silver lining of 9-11 okay all right good lord okay
just needed to clear it up you might just asking the start yelling at pete again uh so dubious cooks
love that penguins off to an amazing start for the flyers porter martone playoff p indeed
because regular season p regular season p he is not zero shots on goal he did not have one of the
19 shots on goal he did not have one of the 19 shots on goal he did not have one of the 19 shots
that archer she loves denied uh matt vayne michkov one shot on goal in a uh in a non-leo carlson world
for the philadelphia flyers i need more than one goal shot on goal combined between porter martone
and matt vayne michkov yeah it was a bad night for the flyers think that uh goes without saying
but i will say it because yg is here and anytime there's a really bad night for the flyers i would
just like to kind of
do the the finger thing and uh and yg had no fight last night he was
really despondent yeah i don't know if you were uh i think it was in the uh the slack but he was
like trying to do a little pushback and like fight back and then immediately gave up and was like i
can't fucking talk shit right now this sucks yeah last night a bad night for fighting back just go
down dog just take your charming silly ass and just go down dog only way this game and this result
could have been worse for the philadelphia flyers if the anaheim ducks declined to match and this
was leo carlson's debut with the team and they lost seven nothing at home to the penguins and
didn't do shit that is a really good point that i hadn't considered there you go lining chat on my
nick robertson podcast that would have been that would have been great though today would have been
the best show of my life i would know it would have been a difficult show you because you are
a leo guy i am a leo guy but i'm also like a
i love when a city burns kind of guy not 9-11 i was gonna say anything that has any such imagery
sorry uh yes not not in that not in that regard but when a uh i love when i'll rephrase i love
when a fan base really overreacts after one game well this would be the time to overreact that was
really bad are you doing any reactions uh for the penguins i am okay i mean we're here we are
halfway to not shutting the fuck up
also i'm starting to like get a little uh i don't want to say i cocky with it but like
i'm starting to embrace the witch accusations oh yeah i like when i say something and it starts to
happen and i'm getting any sort of like oh how did he know i'm like how did i know i mean the
the bouchard one was the first time that i really maybe considered that there's something going on
there i started to make a social clip of the bouchard conversation and i was like oh my god
yesterday but because but uh you cut off sean while he was waiting while he had a thought
on the martin luther king of it all and i think it was because famously cutting off sean mid
martin luther king point is a really bad object we do have it we do have the receipts and everything
that sean was quiet and pete's here yesterday sean pete could not hear sean he asked him to
turn himself up at some point but i was like we can't have a martin luther king clip where
it's just pete talking over sean as sean was like you were agreeing that and the take was
martin luther king's dream better and more important than my dream and isn't it just so
human that the fucking bouchard dream came true no problem and the one that actually has hope
for our future in our world in for humanity that's the one that society puts on the back burner
i could see that sean you were going you were like yes i and pete just fucking cruised through
and made i think made the same point but not great i was gonna say i think at some point i was
trying to say that uh uh something along the lines of i i have a dream that one day my defenseman
will be judged by the quality of his offense and not the analytics on his defense something along
those lines uh not bad the you decide if it's better or worse than i did the analytics on evan
defense though he's i saw his j fresh player card getting better defense is 60 i saw that i was like
oh shut the fuck up everybody if he's that good offensively and he's 60 defensively then yeah
top bad player in the world not the problem is that the the the on paper 40 doesn't illustrate
how bad it can be yeah i test way worse than the analytics for uh evan bouchard there i gotta ask
did either of you see the uh the jj peterka segment from
one mike felger yesterday talk about licking the screen my man i don't know if that's like
link like licking a window or like you licking the screen because you liked it so much i don't
know either but i've been getting uh very very sick i'm currently sick worse today than i was
yesterday which is a tough uh frustrating point let's see if we can find um the peterka clip you
can't because uh they deleted it oh
that's how bad that clip was uh it was mike felger just being like jj peterka what even is that
and being like jj peterka that's the name you're getting excited about the guy who
he was a buffalo saber couldn't even crack it with the mammoth a jj but like he was making
fun of the name he was like you gave up two first round picks for that guy
that like the mammoth got rid of yeah because they got two first round picks for him because
also being like you can't crack it on the sabers or the mammoth two teams that are currently better
than the boston bruins yeah the the mammoth slander that came out of that segment was a real
like well you we know you don't listen to or watch playoff hockey or western conference hockey but
if i didn't know that i would assume it based off of the way that you're talking about the
mammoth right now i heard a little bit of the end of their show yesterday when they were
talking about the mammoth and they were talking about the mammoth and they were talking about the
mammoth and they were talking about the mammoth and they were talking about it basically uh so he
said all that and then of course jj peterka has a great debut scores the goal of the year so far
and callers were calling in and they were as felger and maz says uh blahing him which is
what do you think of him now that kind of thing and felger was just outright rejecting it he was
like what do i think of him now oh he scored a goal we he scored a goal where like i remember
when i was covering the bruins he used to scream me all the time of like you defend them too much
they don't have snipers they don't have goal scores they just want to win every game zero
zero they didn't give sagan a chance blah blah and then whenever sagan will play you would call
him a puss if if peterka scored a goal like that against the bruins felger would go on the air the
next day and have his dick out doing helicopters with it being like that's the guy this is why don
sweeney sucks because he can't get guys like this do you know that utah had that guy and just put him
forbid in the offseason and where was don sweeney taking a nap sitting with the schmenzer in his hand
that's how felger talks yep so i love the man but yeah people were calling in and they were like
oh yeah so how you like uh how you like peterka now and felger was like i still don't and the
callers were like what that can't fuck i i'm kind of caught off guard now also the audacity of
felger to go on the air and do the i have i've never heard of this guy bit on the same day after
i'd have had a five point night in the hat trick just he probably didn't know that that happened
either so i did see you quoted it with like wait until he sees what evan bouchard did last night
and jimmy stewart their great producer friend of the show quoted with like oh right like didn't
bouchard have a hat trick and a uh this is just too perfect a felger and maz listener replied to
him and was like he scored two goals and uh his team lost and i was like ah
so close almost yeah we love that shit okay uh shit we'll get to
fuck let's give uh shana we promise we're gonna be like three more minutes i see that shana is on
and waiting we do have to get to nathan mckinnon scoring two goals and then rocking brant clark
in a very entertaining uh first round rematch last night yep avalanche king's game that was
a fun watch which means credit to the avalanche they didn't allow the kings to control play
it was a fun watch i disagree there were a couple of moments where the kings like second period there
were a couple of moments where i was like these are my kings the penguin or the king scored a
third of their goals shorthanded i would argue that's the definition of dictating play they
said you know what we want to do right now play a man down that's where we're best and they did it
yeah i still i think it's just a different kind of dictating play how many power play goals they give up
that's not important yeah they did they did the classic score a shorthanded goal and then allow
the power play goal that's my favorite sequence i mean it is especially funny because it's colorado
whose biggest problem last year was our power play sucks they start off the season like damn
our power play is fixed and then they were like oh wait not fully fixed you sound like
a fucking avalanche fan there you think that the power play had problems last year for the avalanche
yeah i don't think you know what a power play looks like i was talking to nathan mckinnon about
this he was saying you know i was wondering we talked about this he says i don't think you know
what you're seeing when you're look what just because it two minutes goes by and we don't score
a goal is that what you think you think that scoring a goal on the power play is but oh my god
you are way yeah watch the fucking game where we don't score on the power play the highlight of
this game came in i believe it was the third period yeah third period when nathan mckinnon
was begging brant clark for a fight and got it
this one has a cool tail of the tape nathan mckinnon versus brant clark sean could you uh
throw it up there all right there's the tail of the tape nathan mckinnon is always mad and
brant clark is silly as hell brant clark is two inches taller than nathan mckinnon
but this is a cool i like the tails of the tape brant clark is six two really yeah
i like that's crazy brant clark is tip to tail doofy that's crazy i bet you brant clark is like
two inches taller and 20 pounds lighter but that is my favorite thing in a tail of the tape they're
both
pounds yeah I mean there we go one's taller they're the same weight and I always want the
like Pete and I are probably the same weight I'm not the only one that clocked it incredibly wrong
like Brant Clark's energy screams I'm five foot nine oh yeah but he I mean I just know from
watching him he's I thought he was like six three six four he's six two wow that's crazy yeah that
the important tale of the tape is that Nathan McKinnon is always mad and Brant Clark is silly
as hell this went I didn't think I'd ever see a Nathan McKinnon Brant Clark fight but it went
how I thought it would go hit me Sean Nathan McKinnon is trying to fight Brant Clark and
finally Brant Clark obliges watch my guy go in and ask for this one and McKinnon delivering the
right hands down they go
you
that is true they're obsessed with throwing helmets so the joke that I made last night was
like it's really disappointing to see that Nathan McKinnon has matured into a guy who throws his own
helmet and a lot of abs fans took that as me being disappointed that Nathan McKinnon is immature and
throws his helmet no ball knowers know Nathan McKinnon is immature and throws his own helmet
and usually throws the opponent's helmet
and throws it directly in their face.
Threw Conor Garland's helmet at him.
It was one of the funniest clips ever.
So yeah, that rocks.
That's electric.
I do support like whimsy players.
I feel like Brant Clark is really toeing the line
of like whimsy derogatory.
Yeah.
So I don't hate that happening to him
every once in a while.
Yeah.
I mean, I, I like some whimsy derogatory players too.
Yeah.
Well, we're still, I remain an enormous Jake Walden fan
as I still try to figure out quite what that,
what's going on with that man.
But like, I know that if he got in certain fights,
he'd get pummeled and I'd be like,
that's probably how this should go sometimes.
Sometimes you just need like a little heat check.
Yeah.
And that was a heat check for Brant Clark.
But that's also a cool heat check for Brant Clark
that he's like,
just out here being ridiculous
and gets his ass rocked by one of the best players
in the league.
Who's not really a fighter.
And then the next game,
I feel like he's going to show up to work.
George Costanza style tomorrow.
Like nothing happened.
He's still going to be goofy as he ever fucking was
not going to miss a beat.
Chat pointed out.
So after the game,
McKinnon was asked about like why he fought Clark.
And he basically said like 50,
50 split didn't like the hit that he,
he put on a kill McCart earlier in the game.
And he said a word to me that I didn't like.
And so everybody of course is now doing like the,
what was the word?
There's some people doing it seriously.
There's some people making jokes.
I,
I logged onto Twitter this morning and I was like,
well,
I heard,
I heard the word was gluten.
And then Twitter did that thing where you send a tweet
and that it refreshes your feed.
And it just brought up like a bunch of people making the
same joke.
And I immediately had to scramble to delete it.
That's the worst feeling where you tweet something.
And then it's like,
Hey,
just so you know,
someone who's not that funny tweeted that an hour ago.
And you're like,
Hey,
and I also hate that.
Like now one of the prime features of,
of Twitter is like the,
you know,
when you like buy a,
a vacuum on the internet and then you refresh the page
and all of the sidebar ads are vacuums.
And you're like,
I just fucking bought a vacuum.
We were just,
we were talking about this at home the other day.
It was now it's like,
if you,
if you have a single tweet about a TV show or something
and refresh your feed,
every tweet on your for you page is about that TV show.
And it's like,
I am not,
I am not a w a one layer,
man,
please give me my feedback.
So horrible.
So I guess like my feed for the next week is going
to be like gluten jokes or Nathan McKinnon highlights.
Yes.
Shout out Eric Johnson.
He scooped you bad.
He's funny.
He is funny.
I got some,
he had a tough time.
I was going to say a little funny derogatory.
Uh,
on the opening night.
Uh,
I don't know.
He called Brandon bussy,
a busy boozy.
He really got you.
Uh,
he really,
uh,
Dixon Dallas did.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So there's a song by Dixon Dallas called good looking.
That is very,
uh,
I would say in line with the NHL is hot for hockey initiative.
Might want to check it out.

We should also check out a Shana Goldman.
Yes,
we should.
We shouldn't be checking out our guests,
but we should,
I think,
welcome them.
Welcome to the show graciously from the athletic and too many men.
It is Shana Goldman wearing.
Is that a Yankee shirt?
Uh,
it might just be,
Oh yeah.
That's a horrible behavior move on your part.
You know what?
I,
I thought about going harder and I was like this.
I'll be gracious in my win.
The wind that I did not expect to get.
I,
I truly did not think I'd be here,
but it's an honor.
It's privilege.
I need to brag.
I need to embrace it because who,
who's to say how much longer it will last.
Um,
Boone's lineup nitpicking worked against a fake team.
Will it work against a real team?
Who's to say?
Not me.
Hmm.
I think,
wait,
Sean,
are you,
that's the shit I was trying to say.
There's not a real team.
It doesn't fucking matter.
They're going to,
they're going to crash and burn anyways.
And Ben being that much closer to a world series will make that crash and burn feel that much better for me.
I can't take any sort of victory lap when the not a real team that's being accused of being not a real team.
Made the other team look like so wait,
wait,
wait,
I know.
I was calling the red Sox,
not a real team.
Like,
yeah,
I,
the,
yeah,
Sean's playing at the Yankees also on a real team.
Oh,
I thought Sean was doing this moment.
I thought Sean was doing the classic thing of like,
so what?
You beat my team.
I'll say it.
My team sucks.
What's your excuse?
I've done that a lot with the,
I mean,
the red Sox do suck,
but the Yankees also suck.
And so chargers,
you do it.
Maybe they're good now.
Maybe they're fixed.
Okay.
Like maybe,
maybe this is it.
Maybe this is the start of something new,
something exciting.
I didn't even have to roll out all my superstitions.
Okay.
Like this is a big deal because I panicked.
I pulled out my Yankee mug before game one.
And that morning I'm like,
I should put this back.
I'm like,
no bed omen.
Now you have to have this every day.
And I wore,
I have a shirt.
I've worn it for the last few playoff runs.
I wash it every single day for every single game.
And for game two,
I'm like,
I'm not wearing it.
I'm not starting on this foot.
There's going to be an every other day shirt this year.
And it worked.
So you know what?
I feel great.
I'm going to bring up something that Sean and I discussed off the show.
We were both,
I think a little surprised that you're a Yankees head.
You've got some,
yeah,
we like you.
You've got Mets energy.
I would have assumed that you were a Mets fan.
You seem like a good person.
No.
Yeah.
You seem cool.
Nope.
Nope.
I like my evil empire.
No,
I am with a Mets fan.
So I do watch a lot of Mets baseball and yeah,
he tried to say our dog was a Mets fan.
And I'm like,
you made her a Jets fan.
That's enough suffering.
Like let her be happy.
So even the dogs have Yankee toys.
Like I got a fresh Yankee hedgehog the other day.
So this is big.
You've,
you've revealed yourself as a,
a superstition person.
How do you feel about the,
the Sergey Bobrovsky discourse with him cucking Gavin McKenna?
You know what?
Let him do what he has to do.
Normally,
I would be like,
let the kid have his moment.
Wow.
But I just feel like everything is going to get so blown out of proportion. And I think goalies
are a rare breed. I feel like if this was any other position, like if this is like Mark Shifley
and Tyler Sagan pulling their shit, like no, no, no, let the rookies cook. This is Sergey
Borovsky. He's a goalie. I don't want to get in the goalies way. I don't want to piss them off.
I don't want to send anything off on the wrong foot. I would just be like, if you have to go
first, get out there, get out there, champ, do what you got to do, because we are going to need
you. So let the goalies cook. That's the only exception. He already got like everything he
wanted, though. I know. He already got. He got his contract. He got the contract. He got his
number. He got. Hopefully he gets something nice. Like, is that like it's not watch worthy? It's
not like, hey, I'm taking your number. Here's a watch. Here's something special. But like,
buy the kid something. Take him out. Take him out for ice cream. Have a good time. You know,
it's Toronto. Everything's going to be miserable all year. The total, the center of the universe,
the everything. So.
If you could do something, something nice for him, I feel like that would be ideal.
Well, Gavin McKenna almost scored his first two goals of the season last year, but instead
other guys on the team scored it. So pretty cool. The start that he's having. Very exciting. We will
continue to monitor. That's not a joke about Gavin McKenna. That's a joke about people who are
on almost scored a goal. Watch. Yeah, let's get videos. Let's get clips. Let's get tweets. Let's
get it going. Okay. It's going to be bad because it's the Leafs. It's going to be bad because it's
a big rookie. Put it together. It's going to be too much. Let's talk about the team that we can
all agree is a championship caliber. The Pittsburgh Penguins. That shit was hilarious last night. The
fact that after last season, when they were clearly a pumpkin, that they came back out and
they were like, nope. Awesome. We haven't lost a step. Who cares what players we lost? Dubas
absolutely cooked. Did he cook?
What are the penguins?
I don't know. I was very high on the penguins going into the playoffs last year,
and then they made me look like an idiot. So maybe my taste and my opinion is wrong here,
but they're in an interesting position because so much of their season still hinges on their
aging core. And I expect nothing but greatness from Sidney Crosby, but Malkin's a little bit
of a wild card. Letang. I mean, we all watched playoffs last year. Accelerate,
regular season, like yikes. And then Eric Carlson who's to say what version of Eric Carlson,
the penguins are going to get because last year was unbelievable, right? So that's such
a wild card here. And then you add in these Kyle Dubas additions that are so they're so
on brand, right? And then you see like Hendricks Lapierre scoring last night, you see Nick
Robertson scoring and you're like, that's Kyle Dubas team. But I give him a lot of credit
because he goes for these low risk players and these reclamation projects and they work
out so well.
They're a team that I feel like has a really wide range of outcomes for two reasons. It's
it's the core is a wild card. The supporting cast is a wild card. Usually you have one
certainty. Like you look at a team like the Bruins, right? And to me, they're always the
ultimate wild card because they have such an elite core and they have three core players
at each position. Like that's huge. It's a supporting cast. You don't know, but at least
you have one element of certainty here. You don't, you have Crosby. That's it. So the
fact that they came out flying last night and everything that made them special last
year, that rush play the speed.
All of it looked great. They were getting contributions up and down the lineup and they're
missing a pretty important player in Ben Kindle too. I was so impressed with them and to do
it against a team like the Flyers that stood them up so well. And you saw their trap game
in the playoffs against this very opponent and saw, you know, what, what they made the
penguins look like in that series. I think it's even more impressive.
It's been a big week for penguins because they discovered the first new species of penguins
in like over a hundred years earlier this week.
Yeah.
So huge week for penguins. We famously don't overreact to anything on this show, but through
two days of the NHL season, is there anything that you are willing to overreact to based
off of what you've seen?
The Metro division actually cooked minus the penguins. Everyone comes into the season being
like, wow, the Metro looks so competitive. It's so good. The devils could be good. Who
knows if the Rangers are going to exist anymore? The blue jackets, they were in the thick of
things last year, the flyers, the capitals look how great their off season was. And then
you have the reigning Stanley cup champs.
They come into the season. The Islanders ruined this for me. If they didn't score this goal,
this would have gone so much better, but you have the flyers, the Rangers, the hurricanes
all getting shut out. Islanders only get one on the board. And it's like, you know what?
Metro division. That's it. The Atlantic is definitely taking those two wildcard spots.
Ass ass division, trash division. You heard it here first, uh, Leo Carlson. I think I
believe is currently, uh, penning a apology letter to flyers fans.
Now for the ducks matching because he's like, yeah, he was like, Hey, sorry. He's been doing
a bunch of writing. Shout out, uh, NHL. What's the hot for teacher initiative called hot
for teacher. It's a song by Van Halen. Oh, okay. The hot for what are they calling it?
You were combining hot for hockey and the teacher, that famous FX show that we love
so much starring Nick Robertson or someone whose name sounds like that, right? Isn't
that, isn't the Nick Robinson, the actor there. Yes. Yeah. Yup. Yup. Uh, anyway, that was
all to set up flyers. Fans booed their team off the ice last night. They thought that
the, maybe they were going to have Leo Carlson, uh, in the spirit of overreacting, are the
flyers going to come back to earth from what they were last year? Or, I mean, we're excited
that Martone's a year older. We're excited that Matt Bay Meechkov is 30 pounds lighter
is what are the flyers going to be? Is it a simple way of asking?
I think that they're going to build on what they did last year. Maybe, maybe it just doesn't
happen until the second half of the season, right? Because that's what happened last year.
Maybe that's their move. Start cold and then heat up when it matters most. But I, I like
the commitment to the process. And I think that's really important because there were
past seasons where they were close to the playoffs and we saw management sell. And then
this summer you kind of see a contingent, a continuation of that because the players
that they're going to go after and make these huge swings for our players that fit their
timeline so perfectly.
And they know that they have a deep prospect pool that they can afford to move draft picks
and they know they need a top line center. So I feel like the vision is there. I'm curious
what if anything they do on the fly in the season, because you know, we don't, we don't
know what the NHL looks like anymore because everything changed so much this summer. And
we saw way more trades with players. We generally wouldn't see on the market. And I think of
moves like JJ Paterka and Dorofeev and these offer sheet candidates that got flipped like
so much RFA talent or, you know, prime talent or almost in their prime.
It's a different world. So how much movement do we actually see in the season? Or is it
just going to be that the off seasons are going to be so much more wild. So if, if we
do see the flyers do something this season, like what, what do they have up their sleeves?
Because it does seem like they acknowledge what's missing and that's a number one center
and how, if they can get that star forward, how it'll reset so much of the depth chart,
but it does feel like even if they do nothing and just stay the course, which they've done
before, it's not the worst thing in the world because you have really good franchise cornerstones
in place. And you have a lot of players that if you develop the right way, it could be
different speakers, right? And that's at the top with Mitkov who comes into the season
in shape.
We've heard a ton about it and you know, yes, some of it gets overblown. I think everything
around him has, but also it makes sense. Like if he has more stamina, if he could be a little
more consistent for longer shifts, that's going to be huge. And Martone has that star
ability. I think he's someone that I know for our preview and you know, we're doing
the contender checklist.
He gets really overrated by Dom's model because it's based on such a small sample of play,
he was great in, but I still think he has a high ceiling and I like guys like Kate's
and Forrester. So it feels like they have some good building blocks in place. They should
be in the mix. I don't know if they're guaranteed playoff team. And that's the thing when you
go on the Cinderella run and you exceed expectations, all of a sudden the bar is higher than it
might've been if you just stayed on your regular track and then anything that they screw up
on is going to look like a massive disappointment. Like that could happen here.
But I think as long as they're in the mix by game 84, right? Even if they just miss
out, that's, that's the trajectory they should be on. If they fall to the bottom of the East,
then you have a problem.
Speaker 1: Can I, can I ask you a question? We were, we were talking about this before
the show. Why haven't the Red Wings signed Simon Edmondson at this point? Like what is,
what could possibly be the holdup there where they wouldn't just give him what they want
based off of the vibes of that entire team right now?
Like they should just, just pay that guy, get him on your roster and get back some of
the stuff.
Speaker 2: For different reasons. They should be where the ducks were with a Minchikov where
they were like, we just have to sign this guy and we have to do it now. Shit. What do
you want? Oh my God. That's too much money. Fine here. Like how weird is pizza? We were
talking about for like, how has that not happened?
Speaker 3: I don't know. Um, this organization, the pace in which they do things is absolutely
mind blowing. Like you're, you're a national hockey league team.
Speaker 2: You have a lot of experience being a national hockey league team. Okay. This
is not some expansion franchise. This is, this is Bushley shit day after day from them
to pick a general manager. And I understand they couldn't sign him before they had a GM,
even though it should have been pretty obvious. That's your franchise cornerstone. I don't
care if you feel like maybe he can't drive his own second pair. Maybe you have some questions
about that. Oh, can we jump up to 9 million? What you do know is he's fantastic with cider.
He helps cider be the best version of himself. And you have given cider so many crappy, salty,
subpar partners over the years. And you put them together. And now cider is a top 10 defenseman in
higher he's coming off a career year why do anything to risk that and i also think that
he has more in the tank like if you're detroit do you want to see if he has a little bit more
of an offensive punch sure right because that's something they are missing on the back end they
need a defenseman who has a little bit more offensive pop and i think that could be in
you know his potential like range of outcomes i know like kendra miller is a comp for him you go
okay that could make sense if he could jump up and be a little bit more active it was tough to
see down the stretch because he was dealing with injury but even if you have question marks on that
you know he's really great defensively you know he could be on the hampus lindholm track
that's a great track to be on it is ridiculous to want to bridge him like this is not someone
you have question marks with like a nikitian if i'm nikitian i want the bridge deal because i
want a chance to prove that i'm worth all of this and more on my next contract and if you're the
canes you need to know if you get what he can handle and if he can play more than just a third
pair role with edmonton there's no question at this point this is someone who can play
in the top four you can keep up and compliment your top guy and then you'll
see what he can do sign him now before costs go up even further and we know what the cap is
going to look like in a couple years it's jumping up and what happens when it jumps up like not just
the younger guys getting their pays which like they are this summer they're all getting paid
they're all getting the bag it's the middle class it's the 30 year olds in unrestricted free agency
you think of pro rough and how much that brought the bar up to two off seasons ago and you look at
this summer some of the contracts that were handed out for defensemen if this is a core guy and now is
younger and going into his prime he's going to be worth more than that nine million all of a sudden
doesn't mean the same as nine million did a couple months ago even right before september 15th
it's ridiculous to me there should be no questions asked here i would have wanted to give them nine
nine million by eight years easy and it just feels like they are creating another situation another
avoidable situation because they just don't move at a normal pace and it's gonna screw up the season
more like the season's already okay we know that but you don't need to put yourself at an
even bigger disadvantage on day one i mean i haven't given it a ton of serious thought but i
i will throw it out there like is this the most embarrassing or like worst vibes attached to a
team to start the season in like a non-problematic division than we can remember in recent history
i mean this team shat its pants down the stretch last year missed the playoffs their captain has
requested a trade and had his c stripped uh they fired their general manager didn't hire a
replacement they're heading into the season as like the odds on worst team in the conference and
now they have essentially not really a holdout but they're refusing to give a contract to one of
their best young players and all of their fans hate the entire organization the entire leadership
group and the ownership yeah chad is literally organizing a walkout at little caesar's arena
as we speak i don't know if it's going to take
but they have i'm going to say no i remember like spurs fans tried that for tottenham when they were
not scoring at all and i don't think it actually happened so if it didn't happen there when they
were oh my god they were scoreless for how many games it's it's not it's not going to happen with
the red wings but it should they deserve it they've earned that because pete you're right the
vibes are putrid i was going to say what what do you think man city's punishment is going to be i
think this is going to be tied up in appeals for a couple years so we're going to punt that problem
down the line oh that sucks i do i i don't want them to lose erling holland but if they
give them like a point deduction i do want a bajillion no no we're not doing that city head
aren't you i i am a city that's why you said that you fudged the numbers she fudged the numbers
i i just really i i'm really distraught that i thought you were a good person at that's what i'm
going to say yeah uh no no the yankees are not a good person no i'm not a good person i'm not a good person
person i've been telling you guys bad guy uh do you think that dylan larkin's going to play
another game for the detroit red wings he should okay i think as punishment i think sitting out
no i like he should want to play i think it shows character on his part to play through
all of this noise that he created him for himself let's be real but like still do what you can for
this team because if you're larkin i understand him wanting out when eisenman was there i don't
blame him for that i i know you could say like well the list and he really gave him no options
all of that's true but i understand like if he wants to go to a team that actually does something
to a team with the general manager that wants to win will pull out all the stops and when a new gm
comes in like you do have to regroup a little bit and have conversations to see like are you still
in the same place and it's tougher because they pick from within instead of bringing someone with
some like huge proven track record that you're like you know what i i'm gonna let them cook a
little bit here like you can't it's just a tough situation you're gonna have to do something about
it but it's a tough situation um but if you don't play at all and yes he's hurt but how much better
are you than the connor hellebuyck situation and maybe it's the team being like well we don't want
him on the ice does that really serve your purpose here i feel like that just kills your leverage
even more so i feel like they should want him out there because at the end of the day when he's
playing and doing like at his best he's such an effective player and it should be like a reminder
to the league of what he is also do you really want a guy that's rusty like that's another
a 26 year old coming in rusty either like he's not old he's not cooked but
it's a little bit different i feel like we're getting to this part of his career where it's
like how much time you know if the ball's already rolling how long will it take you to keep up with
it and especially like joining a new team with new systems will that be even tougher
if you're not playing at all so i just don't think it helps anyone i think it just puts a
bigger magnifying glass on the situation and that's the last thing that the red wings need
you're gonna play without edmondson and larkin like what are we doing here that's literally just
hunting the season away a lost year and it doesn't help anyone okay your rant and rants on the red
wings today have been unbelievable but it is the beginning of the season and apologies we are going
to ask you to play the hits if anybody knows anything about shayna they know that at the
beginning of every hockey season a clip of shayna addressing the edmonton oilers goes viral could
you give your state of the union for the oilers please yeah i'm a
noted oilers hater if you ask any oilers fan when for years i'm sitting here going i want to see
your team do better i want to see the best players in the world have an actual chance to win this
year i feel a little bit different right like i'm watching the game the other night and it was chaos
and it was everything i could want from an oilers game from an entertainment standpoint
and i was just so frustrated and so angry seeing who they had to put on the top line
why he was there in the first place and the babcock stuff is frustrating enough for me
but this is like new level and then you go i'm gonna flip away you flip to the golden knights
there's carter hart in that and i i watch hockey and i'm like why does the nhl hate women why do
the edmonton oilers hate women and that's all i could think watching their game and there was a
lot going on in their game this was your classic edmonton oilers you have tristan jari playing game
one which what the hell are we thinking there if you're gonna have a three goalie system those
goalies better be incredible because three goalie systems are bad for everyone i know anderson's hurt
but it does seem like that's the plan that was at least the plan maybe game one changed things
who's to say because if you go through last season if i remember correctly in 11 of 18
starts for jari he allowed three or more goals and this is the guy you're like you know what game one
but say you're going to do a three goalie system and you're going to sacrifice ice time for your
goalies and practice opportunities which is what's going to happen it's for this so mind-boggling
there um the defense atrocious absolutely atrocious the goaltending atrocious they could
not outscore their problems guess my bad proc couldn't fix the team on day one who's to say
um what happens next i i listened to the show the other day and pd had a great point of like they
are probably going to rocket up the standings and i think being in the pacific division is
going to do a lot of heavy lifting there and then it's all going to fall apart and
that is what i feel like is going to happen he's going to get so frustrated after this uh
this loss here and you're going to see some changes made but it's going to wear on players
but all i keep going back to is pete your original point of conor mcdavis should have
to sign long term here and live with every decision that's been made because management
is punting it to the players so the players have to face the music they are the front-facing ones
they are proving all of this their stamp is on it right you should have to commit and the fact that
he didn't i feel like it's kind of a cop-out so all elements of this are just extremely frustrating
when i should just be mad watching them that they can't defend or that they can't get a reliable
save um it's chaotic bed instead of chaotic good like stew skinner in that after years of mike
smith like chaotic good that is what i want from the oilers this is not it i miss him i miss him
i miss mike smith mike yeah yeah yeah you're never getting to mike smith and then i'm not going to get
you're never getting to mike smith and then another mike smith but damn they they came a
little close they came pretty close they tried to they tried to recreate mike smith in the aggregate
yes exactly and i saw i uh i might be uh like piecing together different people's takes to
make this but we talked yesterday about people were talking about jari and they're like oh well
jari is just skinner 2.0 and we agree that no he's not skinner 2.0 because skinner is
good or he is bad and jari is bad or he is hurt i will give you jari is jack campbell okay like
Kind of insulting to Jack Campbell, but okay.
Kind of insulting to Jack Campbell, but the, oh, something needs to be done about this right now.
We don't care how much longer is on the contract that we somehow took on for some reason.
Something has to be done.
Because if this happens over the course of the first month of the season, like it did with Jack Campbell back in 2023, like, you know what happened?
They fucking waved him and they threw him down in the minors and they were like, look, like the plan was him, was for him to buy Stuart Skinner time, but he's unplayable.
And what we saw the other day from Tristan Jari is that he is unplayable.
Who could have seen it coming?
Yeah, he might just be broken.
Like he might be broken and maybe he can be fixed, but probably not in the NHL.
At least not right now.
I don't know.
Maybe it's an overreaction after one game, but like we head into this season, into game.
One with a perception of Tristan Jari and who he is.
And that's why the overreactions come.
So like when people say don't overreact after game one, the overreaction typically comes from the way that you're already thinking things are existing.
And so that's why I did want to ask you about Alexander Nikitian, because it seems like that is going to resolve itself or something's going to happen with Nikitian.
Is it Nikitian or Nikitian?
I always mix that up.
I think you got it right the first time.
Yeah.
I've always said Nikitian.
Nikitian.
We'll ask Grock.
Where would you like to see Nikitian go?
And what do you think his ceiling is?
Because he came into the league and everybody was like, this guy is going to be nasty.
And I think you've seen it in flashes.
But where is the ceiling and where would you like to see him go?
Okay.
The ceiling is tough to predict at this point because he has one season of NHL hockey under his belt.
And obviously he has a track record before it.
I.
I'm not a prospect person.
I don't study players track records.
They come to the NHL.
It's a clean slate for me.
Okay.
No judgment.
I'll try to do my best to read, but I'm not going to pretend I know anything else.
Um, but he came to the NHL and he did a good job.
Like he was yes on the third pair for most of the season, especially when Slavin was back and everything was reset.
He was very good in his role.
He's physical.
And I think that is relatively unique to have someone who can play physical game, but also doesn't have like complete and total stone hands.
It is not someone from like 10 years ago.
This is not the LA Kings winning in 2012 kind of, you know, physical shut down defenseman.
I think that he can play with a little bit more pace and tempo.
And I think we see a lot of defensemen step into the cane system and thrive, and obviously they go elsewhere and then you're like, were you good or was it the cane system?
But I think we saw the difference of what this team looks like with true, you know, NHL caliber defenseman or top four caliber defenseman, the year to year difference the last two seasons of like what it looks like with a real blue line.
But with him specifically.
Like if I remember correctly, and I did this over the summer, I looked up his comps and there were a couple names that were pretty concerning.
I want to say Jason Garrison was one of them and that was a red flag for me.
But I also yeah, like I'm I'm trying to think off the top of my head like what other names were there, but they were all pretty concerning except for I think Braden McNabb was on there, which cool.
And there was one other that I was like, I could see that archetype kind of fitting his game just in terms of like the value he brought.
brings like through Dom's model, the comps go through, we look at the same age range, right?
Like I think it's five, six months and six months. So it's like a year within their current age,
their, you know, height, weight, the scoring stats, the ice time, the usage, and also their
net ratings in that time. So they're five on five play. Like we see a lot of like impact comps and
those were fine, but I obviously don't know what he looks like away from the canes. And that's
going to be the big question here. And he's someone that's young enough that he can make
sense on a contender. He could be on a fringe team. He could also go to a bottom feeder and
make sense because he could fit their timeline too. I just don't know how great he would fit
in that kind of setting. So hopefully it's a team that's more middle of the road or higher
that he goes to. I feel like the blues are this like perfect fit though. And when I did my column
over the summer, it's funny. Like I ran through some teams and they weren't on my radar. I kept
thinking about how much money they've had tied up on defense. And now I think they should have
been focusing on their forwards and blues fans were very upset with me for not including them.
And it made me actually like go through the roster and really think about it. And the more I have,
I'm like, you know, that could be the right fit. It feels like the timeline, the age range,
and also Montgomery is a good defensive coach that I feel like that might be the best landing
spot for him at this point. I just want to answer a question that Pete asked. He asked
who Jason Garrison was. Jason Garrison is a football coach. He used to coach the Cowboys.
He was seen as like kind of like a boy wonder type. Yeah. Okay. No, you said Garrison. Did I mess up
a name? No, no, no, no. That was me. He's making a Jason Garrison joke. I didn't know who Jason
Garrison was either. I'm like, wait, wait, did I have a tendency to do that? No, no, no. You did
correctly. And I still think I absolutely cooked with that one. Wins all around. You asked earlier,
I'll answer this question as well. You asked earlier why the NHL hates women. I could send you
a 60 to 90 second audio book.
I think that will answer your question perfectly. And I think that everybody will feel okay
afterwards. How do you feel as a reader, as a fan of hockey, as a woman, and as a reader of romance
fiction, how do you feel about the NHL's initiative project? I'm just calling anything that's bad now.
What did I call the Taylor Swift output? How do you feel about the NHL's output in this area using
real players?
I can't call myself a fantasy, a romance reader. That's stolen valor. I hand up, first romance book
I read, it was Heated Rivalry. And then I read through the whole series because if I see a book
is going to be a show or a movie, I then have to go read the book first. I'm very annoying about
that. And I would not watch the show until I finish the book. And I did the same with off-campus
because I'm like, okay, let's do this. I'm going to do this. Let's see what this is about. But yeah, this is unbelievable. I don't know who thought of this
because I don't read audio books. I don't listen to audio books, whatever the proper terminology
would be. I'm not an audio book person. I would think even less so if it's 60 to 90 seconds. Are
these hit clips for romance? Oh, what a reference. Really good. What are we doing here? And it's even
more odd.
I only heard one because you guys played it on the show yesterday. I also appreciate that we're
talking about this because I did notice you said we're not talking about it. Yeah, we swore off it
never again. So folks, get used to this or don't get used to this. Enjoy this while it lasts because
we're never talking about it again. I do have a few more questions on it. Yeah, we're not done
here. The hit clips reference is amazing, but hit clips was a thing that you'd buy and it was a play
a little snippet of a song that you could wear. You could put it on your hip. It was like a
gun for listening to a little bit of music. But the snippet of music that you heard was a chorus
that was written and produced by Max Martin. Yeah, it was the most high quality. They were good. You
could get it was a shot of the finest, finest liquor you could buy. This shit is. Yeah, the
problem with this is well, the problem with hit clips is that it made you want more and you're
like, fuck, this bullshit only gives me 10 seconds. The problem with the NHL thing is that you just
wish that.
I'm going to say my my internal data is saying women must not have been involved in this. I cannot fathom the idea of women being involved in this because it's so bad. First of all, the clip that you guys played to also had a woman narrating it. I feel like that's there should be some that women narrate. But also like, if you want to be trendy and get with the trends, you needed a male actor.
To write like Christopher Brindley from
Yes.
From off campus, right? You have the actors who are Dean and Allie doing smut as as audio books. That's that's the shit you should be leaning into then if that's what you want to go with. But I don't understand tick tock length. Romance snippets. I also don't understand it when you saw how poorly everything went with the book talk situation with the Wemberg family. Like this feels like we're leaning into this.
We're leaning now into parasocial relationships, which is exactly what we need to get away from because it's unhealthy for the players for the fans for everybody to have that with these players who consented to this. Is this just like they can use their likeness and image and it's fine. And I like I have a million questions, but it feels like they got everything wrong from this last year of why hockey grew so much. And I respect trying to lean into something that worked. But this is not how you do it. This is not how you do it at all. And it just shows you that.
It shows they don't know how to market to women ever like the clothing they put out. That's pink. It's sparkly. There you go. You must like it. The stolen valor of the bedazzled jerseys, the glitter jerseys like I'm getting. I got so aggravated by seeing all of that. But this is next level because it makes literally no sense. No one was able to just promote heated rivalry last year when that was the moment. Right. Have the actors come drop a puck or
even that they were looking for straight couples when we we were at an islander game last year and
that played i think it was at the islander game last year and that played and uh a girl turned
and kissed the guy next to her and then she turned and kissed the girl next to her and the whole
place goes wild and it's like that that's it that's the fun like you see it how the pwhl has
done it and they're leaning into it more like that that's it having rachel reed at games is
important having jacob tierney at games is important um i get it the next book is critical
of the nhl commissioner but i'm sure when heat of rivalry first dropped that's not something they
knew of either they just saw this viral moment and then it's like okay here let's do celebrini
doing stuff with the cast of off campus and let's allow off campus to do this the straight show and
not heat of rivalry like that's where the issue was it is not that we need romance snippets that's
that is not it just promote what
already works and try to like do more polls i don't know do something talk to a single woman
to try to figure out how to market to them and how to ride that wave into the season which they
should be doing but don't come into it after i feel like shunning it last year and then come
out with this literal shit it's a cousin of like the i don't know if you've heard the uh chris
fleming bit of like people will always say like be yourself but be yourself means
be yourself but like run it by us first you know like make sure it's something that like kind of
works within our thing this is this there's been multiple cases and the um hollywood reporter thing
of the doing celebrini with off campus versus heat of rivalry which again my understanding has been
that uh i don't think they were going to have a harder time getting the heated rivalry people
because the heated rivalry people are just bigger stars than even macklin celebrini but all the
things that we've seen in the past are just bigger stars than even macklin celebrini but
seen the nhl do in relation to heated rivalry and in relation is kind of in air quotes has been like
we have a line that we will go to and the line that we will go to is the bruins selling tuna
sandwiches and like doing things that have little allusions to it but like allusions to a sandwich
that was in the show not like yeah holy fuck like like let's get some gay shit and bisexual shit in
here is just in a place that nobody wants that has us thinking of the players and how they're
kind of being if you've seen 30 rock they're kind of getting the seinfeld vision treatment
where they're just like oh we're gonna like ai jerry seinfeld into every nbc show against his
will because we have the rights to him and it ends up being bad nobody likes it the audience
is insulted the people who are being used for it are like hey is this legal it's bad across the
board yeah i mean the the nhl's idea or concept of separation of church and state is way off like
there is a i think there is a real place for people who are horny and people who really like
hockey and i think that there is it's it's worked really well together over the past like year and
change i i think that the nhl needs to understand when and how to uh
bring that within their walls and they've done a very bad job of identifying how and when to do
that i know that this is like kind of how homophobia works but i think that if the nhl
or whoever is making these decisions would like get whatever concerns they have about like
embracing the quote-unquote gay thing if they watch the show and if they talk to people who
love the show of course we were drawn to it because we were like oh there's a gay hockey show
sign us the fuck up we want to see that but
it's not that it's not something that people like solely because it is gay or solely because
it has gay characters like the kip and uh scott storyline was relatable for a lot of people of
any sort of relationship of like the like or of any sort of orientation of the like i think this
is my person but i think it can't happen it was good storytelling there are a million fucking reasons why people
loved heated rivalry so if the nhl could get out of their head that like by embracing uh heated
rivalry they're signing up for or like putting on some sort of scary pride jersey they have in
their head if they can get that out of their head there's there's so many smooth and easy ways to
bridge the gap between these fans of heated rivalry and fans of the nhl yes yes absolutely
and it's it's just marketing to straight women
like i feel like the nhl they're like we have a fan base and if we if we're going to expand it at
all past sorry the dogs are going wild no no all good no they're mad i also think that like
within within the case of of hot for hockey straight women don't want that shit nobody
wants that shit too like does anybody is anybody asking for this like again i am not the target
audience because i i'm not a big romance reader i i have dipped my toe in this
to it because i it's it's cool it's hip it's current i have to know like what what is this
all about and then i liked some of it but i was not like let me go i read like um shit she wrote
like beach read emily i'm blanking on her name someone will have it but like the people we meet
on vacation like i read a bunch of her books too to be like do i like this and at the end of the
day i'm like you read them in a day and i move on and i'm like but people do like that so there
there is a market for it it just feels like this isn't it it feels like this is just creating a
situation then it's gonna fail and they're gonna be like see look nobody wanted this nobody women
don't actually want this women don't don't care if we market to them and it's like market correctly
you you don't have a domestic abuse violence uh policy you don't have a sexual assault policy that
we ever hear of you're allowing players back into the league who hate women you don't market to us
in any way and then god
forbid you show a pride jersey or something because it might rattle one or two people but
this this is okay this is it it just makes no sense to me at all um i just don't i don't get
what the point is i feel like this is just like such a misuse of time and assets to create these
little clips with players in them that aren't even accurate like you said like the handedness
thing like it doesn't really matter but it also does at the end of the day i just don't i literally
don't understand and like please if you read romance and you like audiobooks
too like do you want like tick tock length things about that i i don't know and if anyone has takes
on that like i'd love to hear it and learn more but i still just at the end of the day just don't
understand how this could ever be this like ever be that could ever be a thing it all leads us to
the to the big question surrounding this whole thing which is who's jerking off to this yes yes
that's what we need to know this is this is it this is the big question
like how do we not have a nick mullen as um as tucker carlson who's jerking off to this drop
i'll say it every time every time i see the snl one the the jokes are funny the impression is not
good that tucker carlson yeah yeah i i laugh at some of the jokes but i'm like this would be so
much funnier if they broke every rule they have and brought nick mullen on to do this
and they'd have to cancel the show halfway through because you would go rogue
it's a good question though nobody wants and usually like i see like
fucking kelly clarkson said the other day that she's cool with ai and generative ai like people
in any like hot button thing or anything that's being panned you're gonna find people who are
like yeah you know what you're gonna hate me for this i think that shit's kind of rad there has not
been anybody who has been like like i saw the uh the oilers put out a video explaining their new uh
goal song and everybody's like why did you change one of the most fun goal songs in the league we
loved that this is so lame why'd you do this there were a couple of people in there who are like
fuck i'll admit it i was at the game the other night i kind of like this i guess i'm in the
minority though like no one is doing that with this nobody is like i'll tell you what i listened
to the summer i turned into hurricanes featuring uh seth jarvis and not a bad 45
seconds i mean they're not even getting people pretending they like it to like prove a point
or to stand on their side of the aisle that is the most impressively hard thing to do in today's
world is to not even get a person pretending to like something to prove a point and that
industry plants yeah right they don't they don't apparently don't have any like we need some sort
of like hockey influencer to be like this is great but even they're like no and it's it's
disappointing too because like the idea of like the summer i turned gritty like i don't know i
feel like the flyers could have made a sick tiktok about that right like something with zegras and
gritty and it would have been hysterical to rip off the show like have them i don't want to spoil
the show or the books because they are actually good but um you know like there's there's things
to do references to pull like put them at a beach house let them see each other let gritty be
swimming laps in the pool like there there's things to do to like you want to market to people
that would be it and that would be honestly that would be awesome this is not that flyers need to
be more protective of gritty too like i i saw the the connor mcdavid thing and i was like this is
unbelievable like how can this be allowed this is the face of your league like he doesn't have any
say and i don't
want to be in some weird like i'm i'm married i don't want to be in some weird kind of suggestive
romance thing uh once it gets to gritty i'm like you can't be doing lame shit with gritty
and the flyers need to use protection with gritty yes because the stuff that the flyers put out with
gritty because this was the fear when gritty first came when gritty first happened i was like
this is gonna get shoved down our throats it's not gonna be funny after a week and it was shoved
down our throats but mostly the gritty stuff hits so now that the nhl is doing this and doing
lame stuff with gritty that's where it's a bridge too far that's right it's vanilla this is too
vanilla for gritty like it's a good flavor though i don't sometimes but like you know you have
vanilla ice cream straight up right like are you are you putting sprinkles on it are you putting a
syrup are you putting something else on it you want a flavor to go with it or are you just getting
vanilla plain like i'm gonna get vanilla i'm not even putting it in a cone i'm getting a plane like
you don't want that nobody needs that you can pick some of the other flavors it's this is probably
more marketing than anything vanilla bean ice cream you're like oh hell yeah vanilla yeah you're
like that's vanilla yeah exactly i think vanilla is great vanilla is a flavor do you get a vanilla
shake yeah vanilla ice cream plain good vanilla shake good like vanilla gets a bad rap it's just
it's there it stands on its own and it is the best base for like every other thing so like i will
say i'm gonna get a vanilla ice cream plain vanilla ice cream plain vanilla ice cream plain vanilla ice cream
when people say shit is vanilla i think that is a but if you say it's the best base that's not you're
not selling me on it i'm like okay so it's here but you can make it great you can elevate vanilla
but even if you don't elevate vanilla it is still a high floor and i would not hold against vanilla
that if that a lot of times if you have vanilla you're putting stuff in it because there is as
pete said if you're planning on doing fixings and you're going to your local cold stone creamery
wherever it may be i saw one of those recently they're yeah that blew my mind they're still here
i'm shocked you're not doing that shit with chocolate like you're not doing chocolate with
uh like butterfinger mixed in or chocolate you you want a but you want a vanilla base there for
all the fixings no i don't no i actually do not i want something weird like i i don't really i
haven't been to cold stone in a minute but even if i get like go to cartbell and you get chocolate
ice cream like it's not just like i'm like all right here it is like i still want chocolate ice cream
maybe oreo crumblies on it like i still need stuff there this is this has been a weird shana
episode yeah it's really bookmarking with some horrible horrible vibes shana has lived long
enough to see herself become the fucking weird person on uh what chaos which it was bound to
happen eventually i don't know if we've ever had a guest no we've had a guest uh that i was gonna
say i don't know if we've ever had a guest that the audience got angry and i don't know if we've
at than they get at us but the one each time we've had uh mike ruiz from the levitard show
i don't know what it is that man pops up and the chat is pissed lovely guy really nice guy they
they get so mad i don't know what he's doing outside of the show but oh boy maybe it's the
panthers stuff maybe that's just it like i feel like so many people have such a distaste for the
panthers over the last couple seasons because you either love them or despise them i feel like
nothing in between anymore that that just like it puts them off on the wrong foot to people but i
don't know it could have been that he said he like wanted to throw brad marsh in into a wood chipper
even though he was like a great panther that yeah yeah i uh that might do the trick i'll admit
i wish the sharks weren't opening against the panthers that so the sharks and panthers opening
that is a chocolate base with a bunch of chocolate fixings yes like it's it's too much there's
too much uh protein there i need the sharks against like give me the sharks against the the
preds or something like that i mean that that feels like no no no that that feels like the
sharks are opening up against the panthers feels like a really cool like punk band like having a
stadium tour where it's like this is not the venue for what i want out of this band it's yeah not
it's not good for the the
uh the sound or whatever like it's just it's not the right vibe i agree with that yeah this is
that's a good take i don't know like i do like it though because it's like this cool measuring stick
game like right off the bat and like obviously the panthers were not perfect in game one i think
that that game stunk not great not great not great um but you know the late games have brought it so
far so i i'm going to expect the same thing here um but i feel like it's a cool measuring stick
game to be like hugo you you are a bunch of boys and you are going to play against a team of men
and you might get your ass kicked but you're gonna learn from it and this is going to set you off on
the right foot even if you absolutely eat shit and lose five nothing which i don't expect to happen
um i do like it i like it's a good chance to see what the offense can do against a team that we
know has defensive structure uh do we know who's playing in net i was just looking that up i was
just looking that up i want to see if markstrom is playing
that would be chaotic play the oh it's akira schmidt unconfirmed according to daily face off
so yeah okay that could make sense but he's that's it that's still like i okay i'm higher on schmidt
i think it's because i watched a lot of him with the devils and i was writing a lot about the devils
like the year that they had a billion goalies in net because no one was healthy no one was good
um i have been so back and forth on the markstrom of it all because on the one hand i'm like get
him out of new jersey
uh goaltending staff there don't know what goes on uh very important that sunny meta comes in and
changes them uh and tries to rework that panthers have a very good foundation for goalies and have
a lot of defensive structure and have all all the things you need in place to help markstrom get his
game back but i do wonder like because he's older because he's so far removed from having like those
great seasons i'm a little bit more concerned about it but i also look at uh akira schmidt
and i'm like i could see him starting a lot of games and i'm like i could see him starting a lot
of games here and actually like being able to take over the starters role in a year type thing like if
he can like live up to his potential like he's very tall he's very good against um tips and
deflections and i feel like we've seen him too like he got a little bit of a playoff sample and
i was encouraged by it too when he was with the devils that i i'm very curious like what he could
do here so i still think that would be fun but i think the markstrom of it all would be way more
chaotic and way more fun against this sharks forward group that is so good
she's got to watch out for that uh red line for akira schmidt that's true yep one time we went to a
game and watched akira schmidt play the puck over the red line while uh there was a delayed penalty
it was awesome he was trying to make a play loved it for him shayna thank you so much for coming on

okay uh let's talk about uh the great tease that you cannot spell alternate captain without four
a's we've got some alternate captain announcements the sharks announced their alternates they are one
of seven teams that have four alternate captains or you could say one of nine julian more voice
teams that have at least four alternate captains their alternate captains will be darn el nurse i
knew it tyler to foley barclay
goodrow and alex wenberg they will support of course
macklin celebrini now i will note for anybody who is newish to hockey or the
captain and letter wearing game you can only have three players wear a letter you can have a captain
and two alternates or you could have three alternates so these teams that are doing multiple
alternates or more than two alternates will be rotating their alternate captains this is i would
say the less interesting of the alternate captain updates we're going to get to some more here but
what do you make of these a's for the sharks i got one big thought give me yours darnell nurse is
cool darnell nurse has to be the my hometown remix now with an a on it although michael misa
with how crazy that hometown remix looks i i feel like this is a um kind of a there's like a three
way tie for lifetime achievement award a with uh barclay goodrow tyler to foley and to a certain
extent darnell nurse but i do think like darnell nurse is going to be a
leader on that team so less so than the previous two but to foley and barclay goodrow are big time
like you guys are old and you've kind of shepherded a lot of these younger players
lifetime achievement award a what do you think of nurse getting the a over truba
thanks probably the right call i think it's probably the right call yeah uh you're gonna
play a bigger role in that blue line yeah i think better player has fared better more recently
let's get to the blue jack oh yeah predators have four as well apparently according to chat
so oh uh did they let me see where i had the predators i don't know if i counted them as
is that new did they just announce this i i don't know that was according to chat but i think the
most interesting one is the blue jackets yeah blue jackets announced i believe it was yesterday
they're going to have five alternate captains which is uh that's the second highest in the nhl
as you can see in this graphic is the captain of the alternate captains he's wearing an a again
and he will be flanked as he is in this picture by uh charlie coyle matthew olivier who else we
got in here sean monahan and cole sillinger yeah i tried to guess these yesterday and i got most of
them you didn't get olivier only missed olivier which i think is fair um this is i think the
clearest and most interesting case but
because not giving warrenski the c is a reinforcement i would say that the blue
jackets don't know what's going on there because he is such a clear clear and easy choice for the
captaincy if you believe that he's going to be along be around long term i believe he is like
the leader of that team he's the best player on that team doesn't always necessarily guarantee
the captaincy but i feel like warrenski is the spokesperson of the blue jackets at this point so
him not getting the captaincy at this point in time should be a bit like an extra layer of worry
for blue jackets fans but i think you still just fucking give him the c even if you think you're
going to lose him like in like two years yeah yeah i agree if you think you're going to lose him just
try to keep him wouldn't making him captain i'm sure they've had conversations about this
and maybe he said you know what i don't want all the attention of being a captain who'd
we don't know what my commitment is and everything but i think the right move would be making zach
warrenski captain of that team we all know that he is what drives that team anyway so i would have
made him captain and then had four alternates which would make them like a bunch of other teams
yes i i just have a boomer take and it's an all-encompassing take regarding this thing i will
i was gonna do you want to save that i think it's is it going to be that there's too much of this
shit i think that there needs to be there need they need to be able to be able to be able to
they need to revert back to a hard and fast every team gets either three a's or they get one c and
two a's and i don't i don't care about like home and road no you get three a's or you get one c
and two a's and that's it so i was thinking about this i think we all feel it's gotten a little
ridiculous the teams have so many a's it's very common now the predators are the eighth team
with four alternates and the there are 10 teams a third of the nhl basically has at least four
alternate captains that's crazy philip forsberg by the way ryan o'reilly stephen stamkos and jack
drury wearing an a in uh nashville very good for him yeah very good for him we like that but nearly
a third of the nhl has at least four alternate captains you don't like that i think i don't like
that either i think it kind of makes sense to me that philip forsberg has at least four alternate
captains and jack drury wearing an a in uh nashville very good for him yeah very good for him
down how much it means and we joked about minnesota they had a million a couple of years
ago yeah golden yes yes the the gophers college hockey college hockey what tells me that you can
not do a million alternate captains is some of the teams that are still doing it the old-fashioned
way the chicago blackhawks are running one captain in two alternates of course you could argue that's
because who the fuck else are they going to give these letters to but if the chicago blackhawks who
i'm a guy's guy which means guys that's a stat i care about how many guys do you have on your team
which is like how many players are you like yeah that's a real ass player the blackhawks you you i
and you want to have eight plus guys on your team blackhawks we think have like four or five guys
so it's difficult so you would be it's a tough group to pull from how many
guys you would actually give letters to but if the blackhawks are doing it the old-fashioned way
you can do it the old-fashioned way make some tough decisions yeah i don't want like a homicide
detective board with pins and yarn to determine and figure out which player is wearing a letter
on which game like like the two tuesdays of every month when we're at home charlie coil is going to
be the alternate captain of the club fuck off just tell me who the captain is or tell me who the three
alternate captains are yes and what if i get that darnell nurse reverse retro and find that
or i'm sorry hometown remix and find that oh in fact darnell nurse does not wear it there like
when i was shopping for evan bouchard jerseys the other day it can't be in blue because he's
gonna wear he's only gonna wear it when they're on the road so it will become a white jersey
it's tough to keep track of i'm not super mad about it but i think like sean fucking sabers
they're doing it the old-fashioned way
three guys okay captain doleen assistant matthias assistant tage or alternate i should say
yeah it uh too but you haven't even brought up the worst one yet okay wait uh are you going to
say who has the most yeah that because i was going to ask pete that if you could uh hide the chat in
case anyone answers it you tell me which team has the most alternate captains there is a team
with five that's the columbus blue jackets but there is a team with six upside down julianne
six alternate oilers no oilers have four though not great behavior six alternate captains uh i don't
know give it to me brock besser zeeb bulliam philip ronick lenis carlson drew o'connor shout
out alias petterson hell you can't have a third of your roster wearing a's you also you definitely
can't have a third of your roster wearing a's when you're projected to be one of the worst teams in
the national hockey league i mean they had a really good start but it's a tough look that's a
tough look yeah i i do wonder with that like they are very specific about like these three are home
these three are away like what thought if any goes into like why why is why is petterson a captain
only on the road did you see how he played in his first road game fair enough stonks back up
he could be available for the right price if anybody wants to take that on uh i think that
and i'm like wait is it going to be three and three or is there going to be wait is there a
way that you could have everybody do it if you have one person who wears it both times you would
just have to rotate randomly and that would be absolute hell on the equipment manager
yeah six is two six is obviously way too many but four is even pushing like i said make some tough
decisions i love having booze and i love having booze and i love having booze and i love having
he doesn't have to be he doesn't have to wear an a for the oilers it said some it says come on
it's leadership training that's fine you can have leadership training you can be training to be a
leader without getting the letter on your jersey that's why it should mean more when you actually
have the letter on your jersey the training comes before the reward in my opinion so too many it's
like it's like uh what zeev bullion wears an a on the road that guy's not allowed to speak up at
home now like it's not allowed to speak up at home now it's not allowed to speak up at home now
if he's if he's emerges as like the lead one of the leaders of the team then like it's he's going
to be the leader regardless of where they're playing yeah i i remember when alternating
captains was becoming more popular it was in like the early 2010s i want to say where they were like
oh we have a captain early yeah yeah they did it they uh rotated chris kelly and david creche i
believe where sabers did it chara was the captain bergeron was the alternate captain and then they
rotated those two and
and everyone was like, "Oh, Chris Kelly, huh?"
rotated the sea did they not yeah with i mean that that's that's the most egregious case of all
you can't have two captains i will allow i will allow five alternate captains before i allow a
team to have two or multiple seas and then they both left both of them said we don't want to be
here anymore ridiculous or dalien might be like the the first real captain we've had in like two
decades how do you feel about buffalo famously so they're doing it the old-fashioned way now
but they weren't last year they were rotating they did not replace alex tuck as a rotating
alternate captain although he might have been a full-timer where i think samuelson and tage were
probably passing around the second one he rotated it rotated his way all the way out of town yeah
he just rolled i mean there's all the way down there's nobody else on that team who should be
like i don't think there's any
real especially with tuck on it's there's a clear a top three there in terms of the
in the leadership department i think can't do benson yet no i don't want that we didn't talk
about benson's mohawk yeah that guy is a real garbage eater and i love it so much i need bugs
bunny asking him what he calls that haircut so badly no i think that i think that like um
i feel like benson would be the elmer fudd to i was just gonna shoot him with a gun
over and he would
hunt that rabbit yep but yeah i absolutely do not want zach benson wearing a letter back like
in the most endearing way possible like don't assign that guy with responsibilities that come
with leadership let him be zach benson not yet oh chat says mallenstein would have been the choice
to take the rotating a i forgot until today when i grabbed that thing that i have a fucking beck
mallenstein sabers jersey and that that is still screen seen because he didn't go get a bag in the
off season on
unbelievable things shaken out very good for dave things shaken out not very good
for arizona state head coach greg powers put on leave after the outdoor training thing where one
of the players uh collapsed and was on life support fell into a coma we haven't given this
story we've talked about this story constantly off the show i don't think we've done much of it
here but this seems like a a part of
this story that was always happening to the point where i was shocked yesterday to find out that
greg powers wasn't on leave or wasn't fired he was still going in every day he was still
coaching the team in which like under his leadership a player i don't want to say like
a player like essentially has died under greg powers leadership he's still alive he's in a coma
but like the um the mayich family their lawyer has said there's
a zero percent chance of recovery so like this player has essentially died as a result of an
extremely irresponsible and ridiculous training session pre-season so if like anybody's unaware
of the story uh matthew mayich 21 years old it was a sixth round draft pick of the st louis blues
uh it's his first year with asu and asu had a team workout on august 20th with a ex-us army green beret
and mayich collapsed and uh did not receive water and was received inadequate medical treatment fell
into a coma has not recovered will not recover according to the family lawyer and it just seems
like every stage of this whole thing was mishandled to a disastrous degree from the the
workout itself green beret apparently forgot that players would need water in the in this workout did
you see the video of the workout yeah yeah not good in like 115 degree heat or something like
that in arizona uh a 40 minutes into a 75 minute workout in the blazing heat without water just
saying we didn't we didn't have water when i was doing this as a green beret well these are
hockey players some of which are from canada like not used to 115 degree weather so like obviously
that's horrible asu conducted an investigation a lot of the findings from their investigation
were refuted by players on the team were like no this didn't happen this didn't happen uh they
allege that powers downplayed the incident as it was happening after it happening saying like
everything's going to be fine he's going to make a full recovery lying to the players and then the
teams and then the teams and then the teams and then the teams and then the teams and then the
university to get their coach removed from the team before they start their season on friday
and them doing it two days before the season started and meanwhile powers had a press
conference earlier this week read a statement like clear ed sheeran voice read a statement
off of paper about him killing a player on the team and then refusing to answer questions about it
just like unfathomable bullshit from asu to the point where like this is not like this is not
fire the coach territory this is like fold the program or temporarily cancel the or cancel the
season temporarily disband the program for like a year or two at the at most because this is how
badly you fucked this up you killed a kid and it was completely avoidable
it was completely avoidable if you are there just has to be a rule that you can't
deprive a player of water during any sort of training anything and i was thinking of i've
thought about it where like how could you make that rule where you know if someone has to run
laps and they don't want to and they like just want to go hey i need a break like how could it
be taken advantage of like it's still like a fucking five second break for someone to just go
like this
and then you would say okay back to work it's also just like human basic necessity yeah you're not
giving a person water does not like make them tough or make them a better better hockey player
you are denying a person's like core element to living the video if you see the video of the
workout nothing is being gotten out of that the players are like their arms and their legs are
just jelly they are cooked completely i don't know how to put it i don't know how to put it
i don't know how far into it it was at this point but they can't do a push-up they can't do anything
and they're just like okay push-ups okay down and they're like kind of doing like they're not good
push-ups they're like the the fucking bodies don't work you're to the okay whatever your fucking
message is of things are gonna be hard you're gonna have to work for it okay like received
you're being a fucking tool by pushing it to this point and normally being a fucking tool just means
you're an asshole but in this case
someone might fucking die apparently according to the filing from the players powers told uh told the
the rest of the team the day after that quote-unquote they were closer to making the frozen
four because of the workout and matthew having pushed himself to the maximum like vile shit
unfathomable shit yeah doing silver lining chat lovely so yeah i mean like this this whole story
this whole story is just a
disaster and everybody attached to it for from like a leadership standpoint within asu should
never live this down like you have straight up you have blood on your hands and you should never
live it down it's a disgrace to college hockey it's a disgrace to like coaching leadership all
of the above it's horrible greg powers i don't think should ever ever work in hockey again
should never be in the leadership position again should be like ashamed of himself the fact that he
hasn't been fired already is i mean withstanding like the the legal ramifications of like
investigative findings and stuff like disgrace yeah i mean i don't know what kind of homicide
charge that could get or whether it's like negligent homicide or something like that but
when you're saying like he shouldn't work in hockey again i'm like there are a few things i think he
shouldn't be doing again or that he could be worried about not doing again at this point insane
it's i guess
again just completely avoidable and uh on a smaller note but this is this by the way
so good job everyone brutal brutal brutal brutal uh shouts to uh matthew mayich and his family
because christ almighty all right let's get to the slate yeah tough lead into the slate yeah but
i just i really wanted to like have spoken on that sean you're an asu guy we didn't even
how do you
feel in yeah i mean uh i i've met greg powers several times like i've talked to him multiple
times um and like prior to this i would have said i had a lot of respect for him uh because
he was their club coach was like pretty foundational into uh turning this into like a
division one program that had uh moderate success for such a new program and i i can give people a
lot of sympathy for making mistakes in the moment um if you respond to it properly and
And this guy clearly didn't.
And, yeah, there's a lot of, like, the institutional failure on behalf of ASU and the athletic department, GM Graham Rossini, like, all of that stuff.
But at the end of the day, like, the fact that there doesn't appear to be any sympathy from Greg Powers is, like, really disheartening.
It's not even the right word, but, like, disturbing, I guess.
So, like, yeah, it's unfortunate because I, like I said, had a lot of respect for that guy.
And love that program and, like, what I think it could be and what it represents for the growth of hockey, all that stuff.
What it's brought, like, it's the program that brought us Josh Doan.
But none of that matters because, like you said, a kid's fucking dead.
And it is, at the end of the day, it falls in the lap of Greg Powers and he's handled it like an asshole.
So, yeah, see you never, I guess, at the end of the day is how I feel about it.
Well put.
It's a good point that you raised, Sean.
It's very sad.
We've spoken very glowingly about Arizona State hockey and what a good story it's been.
And it's transitioned from club hockey to actually arriving.
And I don't want Arizona State hockey to be fucked forever because of this, because of what leadership poorly did.
But I don't know how there can be.
But think about all, like, the sanctions that have been handed down by the NCAA and, like, other sports and hockey, too.
Where, like, a recruiting violation or a, like, a cheating scandal within the program and the punishment that comes down as a result of those things, like, year-long punishments, years-long punishments, and how seriously that's taken.
And you're telling me Arizona State's going to play a hockey game on Friday?
That shit is crazy to me.
Yeah.
I mean, the only thing I'll say there is that, like, ultimately, I feel like that decision should be left to the players.
Like, if the. Like, an important distinction is, like, none of these players have the right to transfer yet because Powers hasn't been fired.
Like, you get. There's, I believe, a 15-day window that opens up once a new coach is named, and that hasn't actually happened yet.
So it's to be seen, I guess, if these players are looking to leave.
But if the players want to be playing, like, I think, like, ASU hockey is bigger than Greg Powers and should be.
And so, like, I would just hate to see the players punished, the players that are still there, the players that, obviously. Like, the players that wrote the letter, for example.
I'd hate to see them punished by not getting to play hockey simply because this guy did something terrible.
Right.
But it's also to be seen, like, the investigation they did clearly was not a good one.
So who knows what extent there was other abuses of power and whatnot, just institutional failures on Powers and his coaching staff part.
Like, prior to any of that, it's hard to know.
But, yeah, I just. I would hate. Like, if the players are asking for Powers to be kicked out and they kick him out, and then to be like, you guys also don't get to play hockey, that would suck for me.
Yeah, I have no interest in the players being punished as a result of whatever happens here.
But I feel like best-case scenario should be, like, okay, there needs to be a more serious investigation into what happened here.
While that investigation goes on, all of these players have a right to transfer and do have, like, free will to go and play wherever they want within the NCAA or elsewhere.
And until further notice, the ASU program is under suspension or on hold or whatever, and the program doesn't exist and the players can go wherever they want.
That's what I was going to say.
I don't want Arizona State hockey to be fucked forever because of this, but I don't see how currently when the athletic trainers are still there, right?
I don't fully know.
Like, who else has been paid?
Pardon my ignorance here.
Powers and his staff were placed on leave.
Oh, okay.
Okay, because I was going to say, like, the athletic trainers, Powers is obviously who we're talking about right now, but the athletic trainers who responded so unbelievably poorly to that, where I think the procedure is you're supposed to have an ice bath for them and you're supposed to throw them in there and all the things that seemingly they didn't do, okay, you're unfit to be, like, you can't have a hockey program if you don't have trainers who can do that.
I mean, athletic trainers, I know that athletic trainers get so mad when you call them trainers, athletic trainers who don't keep them safe.
There's more things wrong than one coach being a tool here.
It's an unsafe working environment.
It shouldn't even be a question.
Again, I'm not saying squash the program, but the program is clearly unfit to exist right now.
So let the players go and get this thing running next year.
Yeah, clarification.
I did see this yesterday.
It's not Powers entire staff that's been put on leave.
I believe.
I believe that his assistant, like, particularly his assistant coach has been promoted to interim coach while he's on leave.
So, like, it's his guy who has taken over the team.
Leah says that everybody, shout out our friend Leah from PHNX, everyone is still there except Powers.
And somebody in chat also said that the players in their filing recommended a specific person to be, to take his place in the interim.
Who?
Shane Doe was one of the people that they recommended.
Wow.
So they did not choose who the players recommended.
No.
Yeah.
So, yeah, I don't understand.
It's also hard to explain how, like, fundamental, like, access to water is in Arizona.
Like, it is, it's a law.
Restaurants are not allowed to deny people water.
Like, homeless people can go into any fast food restaurant and get water.
The first time I ever visited Arizona, it was in the middle of the summer.
Checked into the hotel.
Like, the front desk agent, like, gave us multiple bottles of water and was like, you guys are from the Northeast.
You need to be drinking.
Like, it's such a fundamental part of, like, life in Arizona is making sure you are hydrated.
And it's, like, such a, it's such a thing.
And for that to be, like, deprived of somebody in this circumstance is just so unfathomable.
Like, it is, it is borderline unlivable there in the summer as it is.
And then to deny somebody.
It's just like, yeah, it's, it's, uh, just all unbelievable and sad, obviously.
Terrible.
Unbelievable and sad is a good way of putting it, Sean.
Okay, let's, uh, let's move on to the slate tonight where I believe we've got a four-gamer, right?
Yup.
No, eight-gamer.
Eight.
We got a rotating slate here.
Oh!
This is the, uh, the beauty of Sean's new, new creation.
I might say that's a bug, not a feature.
Well, it doesn't give you the whole picture right away.
But it, it, it's all included.
What if you have it wrap all the way down and then curve to the left?
I mean, I, it's incredible work that Sean has done.
But we, we'll, we'll do it.
What if we have a little, like, uh, back in the day when we would write things on a piece of paper,
you'd write on the bottom over and you would do a, you would point a, uh, you'd make a, an arrow into the corner that says,
hey, you gotta flip the page to see more.
It's an eight-gamer.
I apologize.
Beginning with the red-hot Philadelphia Flyers hitting the road.
Maybe they'll play better there to, uh, play on, uh, an Indian burial ground.
Mm-hmm.
In New Jersey.
That's at 7 p.m. Eastern in the United States and Canada.
Uh, lightning visit the Rangers where the Rangers hope to be a good home team this season.
They're not a very good road team so far, but we'll see.
Buffalo Sabres in action visiting the Columbus Blue Jackets.
That's a real what chaos teams bowl.
Hoping for the best for both of those teams.
Endearing and derogatory.
It's a, this is a, uh, an, a doing it the old-fashioned way versus the 5A method.
True.
Yeah.
Okay.
Uh.
Let the best captaincy situation win.
Yup.
I would say the Sabres captaincy situation was a little bit better.
Wilds take on the Preds at 8 p.m. And if you could flip it, thank you, Sean.
You have the Kraken taking on the Flames.
And boy, oh boy.
That is.
That is a, aren't these the same team as, can't you just be one team together bowl.
I'll note flames do it the old-fashioned way.
You know, the Flames captain is, uh, backland.
Yes.
You know, the Flames assistant captains are requiring me to know three total Flames players.
Uh, not including the goaltenders.
It's gonna be a tough one for me.
You'll be able to get one of them.
Maybe Jonathan Uberdo.
Jonathan Uberdo is right.
Ooh.
I would not get.
The second one in a million years.
Who is it?
Zach Whitecloud.
Okay.
Yeah.
Nope.
That wasn't going to happen.
Wasn't on my, uh, my proverbial Azul card for anyone who plays the game Azul.
I'm into it.
Blackhawks at the Mammoth at something called the Utah Mammoth.
Mike Felger voice.
That's at 9 30 p.m.
Eastern United States and Canada.
Sean, I can't really see.
What do you have in the bubble below 9 30?
Is that an ESPN logo?
ESPN plus.
ESPN plus.
Oh, so it's.
Yeah.
I could see because I couldn't see the yellow.
Of it.
So it just looked like, uh, there was a marking and then a space ESPN plus.
Very good.
I don't think we have a Nash cast for that one.
So you're just going to have to hang tight at 10 p.m.
There was a dual tuck and this is a tough one because got to get eyes on the Oilers
taken on the Canucks in a rematch of a Tuesday night, but then you've also got the Panthers
and the Sharks at 10 p.m.
I don't really need to see the Panthers tonight, but I need to see the Sharks.
I want to see what this new look.
What?
Darnell nurses, San Jose sharks looks like this is going to be a good one. Uh, I do want to
mention I tweeted about this last night for anybody in the good old United States of America
the ESPN YouTube TV integration has made my life so much better oh yeah two games you get all of
the NHL games outside of your local broadcast because the RSNs aren't covered on YouTube TV
state of RSNs right now absolute disaster but if you are a person who likes to watch games across
the league I do recommend getting YouTube TV and you don't have to have an ESPN subscription on top
of that because it's fully integrated into YouTube TV if you get YouTube TV that includes ESPN you're
going to get all the fucking games within YouTube cleanly presented easy to switch back and forth
between you got quad boxes you can do a multi-view you can do a multi-view with the ESPN plus games
and whatever game you might be watching on cable which is super helpful so so good so uh that is
not a sponsor that last season the beginning the our conversation a few games in was here's why
it's bad with ESPN we'll tell you when it's good right now it's good with ESPN yeah right like
when we complain about shit that sucks you have to you have to give credit where credit is due
when it is good YouTube TV has been really really awesome so far
through two games and I just really hated the ESPN app and the way that it operated and also the way
that the games looked on the ESPN app I felt like they were choppy and like rough half the time it's
been smooth sailing through uh through two days so far the uh through the NHL season so highly
recommend if you're interested meant to note for the uh 10 p.m Canucks and Oilers game the Oilers
and Alec Regula are both on LTIR so Josh samansky has been recalled on an emergency basis maybe
you're getting a little Josh samansky aka Finn looking for both love and a lineup spot tonight
so that'll be fun to watch the slate is an A minus but a minus ain't bad there is let me see
the seven I mean I I might have all eyes on Sabres and blue jackets you'll have your Matthew
's debut there that's really exciting Louis crevier recently extended congratulations to him nine
o'clock I ain't doing I'm not fucking touching that flames cracking game but I will watch a
little bit of Blackhawks and mammoth it's just 10 p.m there's too much shit on my screen too busy
and be multi-viewing it but that's an A minus and this week has been an absolute A thank you to
everybody who has watched the show this week participated in any of our silly yes Sean oh
we have superchats
to do what we do I just can't believe you didn't acknowledge what I had going on at the bottom there
oh give me the the bottom let me see uh league leaders in points uh very good oh league leaders
in points goals and assists that's amazing Evan Bouchard across the board look at the hand 18-way
tie for for assists but he is alone with Evan Bouchard representing those 18 players he is one
of the 18. I I like that Sean's just like kind of secretly cooking I I cannot believe I looked at
that I assumed that was like a DJ here's uh here's what I want you to do I did that yeah yeah uh very
good work Sean thank you yeah great job buddy all right let's do some super chats from BG mung bean
R.I.P my annoying Rat King Clarky yeah he's done uh Evan Bouchard's heart candidacy says turns out
you can change your username once every two weeks
two weeks so I really hope Bouchard doesn't do anything to make a fool of me in that time
again it's it's it is his heart to lose Renee this ought to be good says Mookie Betts curse you
brought this on yourselves fair Renee says Sean the Dodgers would love to have you listen to me
listen to me and look me in the eyes when I say this I'd rather die I'd rather die
but I want to do it I want us to do a the Dodgers game at some point I would go to a Dodgers game
and root for whoever they're playing
unless it's the New York Yankees in which case I'd root for the meteor oh Sean I love her she's
like a Martian swagger Sloss says the alternate Captain bit in the rundown deserves a tip yeah
felt good about that one Stephanie says Sean stepping up the graphic game this season has
me hyped AF NGL yeah I need to shout out Sean uh figuring out some real fun maneuvers with when he
shows videos how he can place us in different boxes very good real real real good Frankie smoke says
under 9-11-01 uh-oh guy who bowled a 300 or the Robertson family pass Agatha says 14 pens with
points and only one for Sid cross washed amazing feeling before we come back to third period lost
curse hoping for one more for DJ's sake Frankie smoke says I need Felger to have never heard of
the Islanders yeah well he doesn't know what something is it usually does pretty well Superman
says congrats to Claire Thompson on her retirement to be a doctor also pop bass being a pwhl fan is
awesome hell yeah Stephanie Mills says please tell my queen Shana she's never had a wrong opinion in
her life tough episode to have that cannot tell a lie I am sorry uh Buna duchess all right says hot
for hockey feels intentionally bad to justify throwing up their hands and saying we tried and
continuing with business as usual yeah I don't know who brought it up but uh maybe the NHL is
doing uh the producers here where they're like intentionally tanking but who asked them to try
like in this regard well we we did ask them to try we asked them to acknowledge certain things
and they're they're maybe they did it in a way that they're like look what happens when we try
yeah but like if you Ryan talking about if that's your idea of trying I think that's the bigger problem
give a good faith effort yeah Bartez Battalion says I'm just stirkin it right now and by it let's
just say I mean my Igor very good I did see a good uh who up Tristan they Jari that was really good
yeah uh unlike Tristan Jari Renee says Pete make vanilla great again no that is a correct read
vanilla is a flavor vanilla is a good flavor and when you call something vanilla you're saying that
it's good
Alexa says missed the stream yesterday and we were the only team that didn't clinch the wild
card go Braves and here's to beating the Phillies tonight go birds all right uh Matt friend or foe
says painfully vanilla and equally vanilla I don't know I don't like the energy behind yeah well I
was gonna you can't you don't get you don't have the right to be offended by that if you're gonna
defend vanilla but it's attached to the word painfully yeah and if vanilla is straight we
can admit no no disrespect to straight people straight people
uh are often more boring than others that's fair shall we say it's straight people who aren't
embracing heated rivalry with the NHL it's you know it's just because I don't want the straight
mob coming for me that's because it's the most common doesn't mean it's not awesome
it's still still really good no being straight has its awesome moments oh well don't give it that uh
yeah Reeves says thank you as always for making this a safe space for women's hockey fans and
giving people like Shayna a platform yourself your she yeah platform was in air quotes I mean
I do like the idea of uh platforming and book book ending the show with uh telling telling a
chat to go themselves yeah yes Shayna is always welcome Shayna's the best uh Shearer says St Louis
should get a compensation pick if they lose this player I think they're a bigger yeah I was gonna
say yeah that's the it's it's a good hockey thought I'm not slagging you for that uh but
definitely other things on the brain there Gabi says this toxic culture stop starts at the bottom
and it follows the players up to the NHL it's yeah I mean I was gonna say during all
that conversation a smaller part of this but it did does lead to this is just that that like
cool mindset is still there of the like you're good like hockey is your life this is the most
important thing and everything like it's just so lame more so and then it can lead to
somebody dying is like okay we've got a couple of reasons to not be like that anymore more so
I'm just like thinking like why do you need to train a a hockey player like a green beret like
there are things that you can pull out of a green beret training like I I would think more like
mental lines of thinking or just kind of the way that you approach your work but like two entirely
different jobs that have entirely different training approaches or should so very weird
mindset to be like we're training you exactly like a green beret Beth C says on a better note
the arena Foundation is a real and except is uh real and accepting donations another thing the
NHL could promote thank you Rachel Jacob and Brendan
uh Shearer says Powers was more likely told to not say anything to the press in regards situation so
be more likely uh if it would more likely be the University Sports Club Department especially if
attorneys are involved yeah I did see I saw the video that went viral of the reporter grilling
impressing Greg Powers
and he wasn't saying anything and the reporter was really fucking going after him uh i understand the
emotion there and i understand being like fucking say something for yourself explain how this is
okay but i also was like you can press this guy all you want right but he cannot and he's not
going to say anything so he should he should say that he's given the current investigation i'm not
allowed to say that he shouldn't be there in the first place yeah and it's just the way that he
the way that he carried himself in that presser was like the question that i remember was like
uh you preach accountability well how have you been accountable in this process and he just said
a lot of ways yeah and they were like you want to elaborate on that he's like no
horrible bad way to carry yourself yeah if you can't say anything there you should not be there
uh bart has battalion says kraken versus flames who want me bull
again pass fatima says from a liverpool supporter boo man city i can't believe liverpool as well
but sorry um little interesting note before we end the show gary betman went on a sportsnet show
today and uh said that he thinks that uh no trade clauses have gotten past what they were
originally intended to be so something to keep an eye on yes i agree with the elliot freeman thing
though which is that as long as no trade clauses exist they will be abused by general managers
which are the people who give the no trade clauses to them so if you want to get rid if if you think
that no trade clauses have gotten a little far the owners have to negotiate that into the next cba
because again if you're fucking going to buy this cup of coffee and it's 350 and they say hey uh do
you want it for three dollars yeah i'm doing that thing and that's what no trade clause i can get
the thing a little cheaper
yeah sure let me do that uh we have another super chat yes from hey kid yeah you that had a little
bit of second van halen reference i was getting a little jump there though oh hey who said that
baby how you been uh good luck on your bar exam says hey kid yeah you to alex the lion 81
good luck to anyone doing any exams uh did you see claire thompson is retiring from hockey to
complete her medical degree i did i heard about it on a show that fucking bangs yeah you say it
earlier yeah it was super one of the super chats okay yeah if you're not listening during the super
chats yeah no no no you can ignore the super chats but like i'm reading uh so shut out claire
thompson i only brought that up because i wanted to make the joke i want grinders not doctors
yes yeah uh someone said dj is right i don't know about that what about all right appreciate
