i love it so here we are what do you have for us today but there's literally no way to segue into this appropriately so we're just gonna do it no i don't know how you move from musical musical to this but you can market the people who do that gerald gerald i like it it's gerald's time now yeah uh so we're gonna be talking about a disappearance today and it's a very strange one okay it's more recent i would say yeah um and i think this one is one of those that i want everybody to to think on it because any information that comes in i think it's still unsolved like we don't know what happens okay it's one of those that like any years i think would be a good thing um so we're going to talk about the completely head-scratching disappearance of angela green oh i have read actually this is a case that i actually really know a lot about i i think anyways i've read about this recently yeah this is strange is very strange and i really feel for her daughter i do too in this situation i feel for her daughter hard yeah so i really hope something comes to pass that she can get some answers yeah uh so let's talk about angela green okay uh angela green was born in china in 1962 she was the second of two daughters born to college professors uh she was born in a suburb of beijing and like many young people in china she spent the first you know what like 20 years of her life in a pretty small rural village dreaming of an exciting life in the city after graduating from high school she did find some work as a model she was beautiful stunning stunning uh and was training to become a journalist but what she really wanted most of all was to move to the united states and she was a journalist and she was a journalist and she was a journalist and uh because her sister had a few years earlier now in the mid-1990s angela finally got her chance to travel to the states with her sister to go visit her sister i should say because her sister and her husband were living in kansas at the time so she was going to go there uh while she was here um she was here on a tourist visit and friends of angela's parents introduced her to jeff green okay uh he was an it specialist 15 years her senior he spoke fluent mandarin oh wow which is wild yeah that is very impressive uh despite the age difference between them again like 15 years uh they hit it off completely and continued their relationship through phone calls and letters like long distance nice by 1998 angela was living in prairie village kansas finally and uh she ended up living with jeff on a fiance visa oh we know about those we're gonna get 90 day now angela's sister and her husband were super happy to have another member of the family living so close but it was really her need to be with her sister and her husband were super happy to have another michelle who was the most excited to have her aunt nearby uh since she was in the country on a fiance visa angela wasn't able to work in the country so she spent a lot of her time with michelle right and michelle later said we had a very special bond it was always me and my aunt going on little adventures i thought she was so beautiful and i wanted to be beautiful like her oh my god isn't that like the sweetest thing that is precious that's like us we were always going on little adventures and you thought i was so good and i did think you were and i do think you're so beautiful and i wanted to be just like you i was like oh and so angela and jeff got married in 1998 but uh that was also so this was a very happy event obviously but it was also followed by a little bit of a period of frustration and sadness for angela because she loved being near her sister but she was struggling to adjust to a life in kansas yeah that's a very different place it's a very different place and like you can't work that's gotta be tough you know like you can't really meet too many new people like it's tough to get out there in the community she also in in making that even harder she also felt like very self-conscious about her limited english oh which i can't imagine how that feels yeah um because like not know what people are saying yeah like i feel like going to another country and not knowing the language or not being able to speak it would be scary yeah it just would be like you feel a little helpless and vulnerable because yeah you know and limited yeah so as a result she spent a lot of her time alone she really only talked with her family or jeff which left her feeling a little isolated and lonely that's tough two years later angela gave birth to a baby girl ellie her whole life changed for the better after ellie was born not only did caring for ellie give angela something that completely fulfilled her and filled her days but it also gave her like meaning yeah direction and she felt like this is my purpose um ellie said in a 2020 interview about her mom she's incredible and she would give without receiving anything back she poured her soul into raising me and taking care of me growing up so i was her world which like just yeah kills me to have that is like so incredibly special now from the moment she was born ellie was the absolute center of her mother's world as soon as she could talk angela began teaching her mandarin oh cool and in time ellie became her mother's best friend and confidant like they were just bffs they spent every day together with angela taking thousands of photos of her and pushing her daughter to be the best version of herself in every situation she says obviously her mom had like very high standards for her but she just like pushed her to be better yeah and she said she had a pretty happy childhood like she was it was nothing like too crazy okay uh her cousin ellie's cousin michelle confirmed that angela and jeff were definitely strict with ellie they wouldn't allow her to have like sleepovers she either so it's interesting because i when i was younger i used to be like you're not gonna do sleepovers like what the hell sleepovers are fucking weird no i just want like they can get weird yeah and i i don't blame you now yeah and i don't care about anyone else's opinion about that like you can do whatever you want to do like nothing will change sleepover at my house um i'll bring it you can have a late over honestly i would have loved a late over yeah because then you sleep in your own bed yeah you're not in a house where you don't know everything that's going on in that house i can't tell you what's going on in that house i can't tell you what's going on in anybody's house no and we've told some gnarly stories exactly and i can even bring you back over early in the morning and you have breakfast hell yeah you know we've done that with some of their friends like over our house yeah yeah uh but i won't get into that i think actually i will say though it kind of seems like the new thing it is a lot of parents are not doing so we don't feel like on an island because a lot of people aren't doing it um so the rules in the greenhouse were put in place to ensure that ellie's primary focus with her education yeah and i mean it paid off because in 2018 ellie was admitted to the university of kansas where she planned to study data analytics and finance damn which like you need a big brain for that you absolutely do uh for ellie life on campus was filled with you know new experiences and a level of freedom that she probably only dreamed of having um in no time she was making new friends she was filling up her schedule with social activities and you know things that you do in college hell yeah now those first semesters at school were fun and exciting for ellie but for angela it was tough yeah that's nerve-wracking that's her only child that's nerve-wracking for any parent um ellie said i know that she struggled with me being on my own but she wanted to be there for me and that struggle really took a toll on her yeah which is totally understandable for nearly two decades angela green's life had been consumed with raising her daughter and guiding her towards a successful future but now that ellie was away at school all the old loneliness and feelings of isolation were rushing back and it's also compounded with worry and fear and stress from yeah ellie being off at school you know yeah exactly and there was really not a lot to distract angela from it so she would just kind of like wait around and then when ellie would come back to visit on weekends it was like her bright spot oh that's really sweet i know but also like sad that she was so isolated yeah i hate that for her and she was going through some like a little bit of like a mental health struggle with it like yeah you know um and she tried to hide it but the change in angela's mood and her declining mental health it eventually became obvious to ellie and jeff okay um who did have a talk about how they could get her maybe some help with her mental health all right so they knew it was going to be kind of an uphill battle because like her personal feelings about it were like she just wanted to like plow through it right like you know therapy and all that just wasn't on her radar as something that she was planning to do um she didn't really want to pursue it so they knew it was going to be a tough discussion um but they tried anyway and the longer ellie stayed at school and the more independent she became the worse it kind of got for angela oh no uh things reached a breaking point when the school year came to an end and ellie returned home angela was overjoyed to have her daughter back in the house but she was kind of crushed when she realized that in addition to working a part-time job that summer ellie had made a lot of plans with her friends and her boyfriend zach and ellie later said i knew my mom was increasingly upset but i never knew why i've never been able to figure it out and i probably never will oh that's awful yeah now on the evening of june 19th 2019 ellie and angela got into a bit of an argument i'm not going to go into the specifics of the argument because i don't think it's not really our business yeah and as you will find out this is the last time that ellie saw her mom yeah and i think that's like a tough that's a tough subject and it's personal and private yeah um but at the end of the argument basically what happened was you know as it happens especially at that age you know and i think that's a tough thing and i think that's a tough thing and i think So I think Angela had said, you can just leave now. She said something like that. So Ellie said not wanting to make the situation any worse, she left the house and decided to spend the night with her boyfriend's family thinking like, I'll separate, things will blow over. Yeah. It's a very common thing. It happens all the time. I've had that happen plenty of times in my life. Yeah, I'm going to let everybody, we're both going to cool down, we'll have a rational discussion, and we'll move forward. And she said, I expected to, she was waiting for an apology, and she said, I expected to go home the next day. I never would have imagined it would have blown up as much as it has. She didn't reach out to me as she has always done. So that, again, was the last time that she spoke to her mother, and she hasn't seen her mother since, which is like heart-wrenching. I was just going to say, I can't imagine having to deal with that. I feel sick. Because it's, again, such a normal thing that happens. Yeah, you would never think twice about that. Kids and parents get, especially as you get into college, and all that, arguments happen, disagreements happen, somebody leaves to cool down. There's no way of being able to predict something like this would happen, no. So the next day, Ellie got a text from her dad asking if they could get together to talk about what happened between her and her mother. But Ellie told him she had plans, she wouldn't be available. Two more days passed when she finally heard from him, and she was completely unprepared for what he would say. According to Jeff Green, after her fight with Ellie, Angela's, you know, mental health problems could no longer be ignored, and he was determined to get her help. Okay. Knowing that she would resist any suggestion to see a doctor or therapist, Jeff told Ellie he, quote, tricked her mother to go to a grocery store parking lot where mental health workers forcibly grabbed her and took her away. I don't know about that. Now, she's an adult. You can't do that. Like, what, are you taking her to Provo? Like, that's the thing. That's not a thing. You can't just call. You can't just call mental health workers to come take an adult away. No, you can 5150 someone. Like, that's. Like, that's a very different story. That's a very different situation. You're not adult-napping them from a parking lot. And to, like, trick her in a. Like, it just seems. I was like, whoa. If anything was the case where, like, he felt like he needed to step in and get her the help, he should have taken her to the emergency room. Exactly. And just to be clear, as we go through this, I'm not accusing anybody of anything. Nope. I'm just telling you what happened. Yep. You can make your own decision about it. Yep. We can all feel how we feel. I'm not accusing anybody. Nope. So having been raised to be obedient and to trust her parents, Ellie didn't hesitate to believe what her father said. And she was immediately concerned about her mother's well-being. Yeah. Because why. I know it sounds like we're looking at it now and being like, what? Like, that wouldn't happen. If this is your father, who, again, you've gone your whole life, learned, like, being told to trust. Yeah. Of course you're not going to question it. Right. And also you're probably like, whoa. Like, things are just spinning. Well, and at the same time, it's like, obviously, this sounds crazy to us because we've never experienced anything like this. And, like, I think we're older and we know that things like this don't necessarily happen, like, with mental health professionals kidnapping people. Yeah. Or kidnapping somebody from a parking lot. But when you're younger, you don't have any experience with that. And her only experience was knowing that her mom was resistant to it. Exactly. So having it be, like, this big, scary situation, you know, like. You're not going to think your dad would lie to you about something like this. You wouldn't think he'd lie and maybe you'd understand, like, oh, it got to, like, such a far point. I missed what happened here, you know? Like, you'd think that. And she was, again, just immediately. I don't even think she was thinking about any of that. I think she was just thinking about them. About the well-being of her mother. Yeah. And she said, I was like, oh, my God, I need to get mom her clothes, her food, her makeup, whatever else she needs. What a good daughter. And she. But when she asked her father what hospital her mother was in, Jeff was incredibly vague and said only that it was down south somewhere. Okay. Why don't you know where she is? You called the mental health professionals. Where'd you call them at? Right. And if you do know. Because that would presumably be where she is. And if you do know and you're with. If you're withholding that information, why withhold that from the daughter? That's the thing. Now, in the days that followed, Jeff Green continued to evade his daughter's questions about the circumstances that led to her mother's disappearance. And he was, like, suspiciously avoidant when she asked for details about where she was and when she was coming home. At one point, a few days after Angela was supposedly hospitalized, Ellie insisted she wanted to visit her mother. Yeah, and she has every right to do so. She's an adult. But Jeff told her she wouldn't be allowed to see her. He claimed he had already tried to visit Angela at the hospital. What hospital? You said you don't know where it is. He said you don't know, but then you tried to visit her there? But she quickly became agitated and tried to assault him, he said. Okay. So he insisted it wouldn't be safe for Ellie to go visit. Which. Like. But you can understand why Ellie would be like, okay, like. Because again, it's her dad. It's her dad. And on the flip side of things, too, she just wants her mom to get better, so she doesn't want to agitate her. And she doesn't want to agitate the situation. No, and she's probably just shocked. I would be shocked by all this. Yeah. Now, Ellie did continue to press her father for details about her mother, and he continued to ignore her, just like avoided or give vague things or change the subject. Finally, after two full weeks, she received a text from him saying that her mother would be coming home soon and asked that she come to the house and help him clean for her return. Okay. Michelle, the niece later said, Jeff made her go through her mom's clothes and only. Only pick out a few outfits to keep. Why would you be getting rid of her clothes if she's coming home? I'm not sure. On July 16th, Angela was supposed to be released from the hospital, and Ellie was excited to finally see her and get some answers. But that night, Jeff called and said he needed to talk to his daughter and that he was on his way to see her. When he arrived at the Krause's house where she was staying, Ellie was waiting for him in the driveway, and Jeff put his truck in park but left the engine running. Okay, so this is going to be a quick conversation? Yeah. He got out, walked over to his daughter, and allegedly, casually told her that Angela had a stroke at the hospital and died. He hugged her briefly, then got back in his truck and left. For that to be the interaction, if that was the fact of the matter, is awful. Ellie said, I remember the world going blurry. I fell to my knees on the driveway. I couldn't even. I couldn't even cry. I had no words. And you just leave her? Like. Like you're. So you're like some of her only family left and you're just like, okay, peace out. Yeah. That's fucked up. Like. So the next morning, Ellie reached out to her dad to get more information and to find out what happened here and when they would be holding a funeral for her mother. This poor girl. But Jeff was typically, like, just like he was, evasive and vague. He told his daughter the subject was too painful and he couldn't talk about it. He also insisted she not tell Angela's sister, Catherine, or anyone else in the family about the death for the time being because it would be too shocking. It's always going to be shocking. I was going to say, actually, the further it goes, it'll become even more shocking that you didn't tell them to begin with. And her boyfriend, Zach's family, they obviously were aware of what happened because she was staying with them when this happened. So that was in their driveway when this happened? And they reached out to Jeff to offer their condolences and support, but he ignored them. He ignored them entirely. That's rude. From the moment that her mother had gone to the hospital, Ellie was completely in the dark about everything that was happening in her entire family right here. Yeah. And now her mother was supposedly dead and she had no idea what had happened. She was just, had no idea where she was, no idea what was going on, what led to her being put in this place. Isn't allowed to see her mom. Isn't allowed to see her or talk to her. And then is just told she's dead and then gets no further information. That is so traumatic. Like, and again, she had been raised to follow her parents' rules, to trust them completely. So she continued to do as her father asked. But she was, she was, it's not like she was doing this being like, everything is fine. This makes total sense. She was just raised to trust her parents. So she was just like, this is weird, but I don't know what else to do here. Well, she's also like a college-aged girl. And like, I don't think many of us can say we've been in this position. So I don't know what I would do. And she was rightfully very troubled by her father's vagueness and silence about this whole thing. Yeah, again, this is so fucking traumatic. Ellie said, I knew my mother wanted her ashes sent back to China as like a cultural thing. Yeah. But her father refused to speak to her about a funeral or any services, claiming he was just still dealing with grief. And it's like, so is she. I was just going to say, even if that is the case, that Angela passed away, had a stroke suddenly, and you don't want to talk about it. Okay, like, dude, but that's not fair to everybody else. There are other people who love her that she also belonged to. That are also grieving. And they have every right to grieve in the way that they need to grieve. And also. You can't just like gatekeep grief like that. Exactly. And it's like, also, you are going to have to figure out services. Yeah. People, I mean, this is the gritty reality of the world. Absolutely it is. When people die, they can't just stay where they are forever. you do need to move people out of these places I've been there yeah you can't you gotta get somebody to get them to your funeral home you need to know what the services are like well what's the alternative like they get buried in an unmarked grave things move forward and you need to like make the decisions or better yet if you are struggling which is a very human thing to do you need to pass that off to someone and say you need to handle the services because i can't handle it yeah and it sounds like there's somebody around like she had a loving sister she had her niece that loved her like i'm sure many people would have stepped in and she also had family back in china yeah now several months passed jesus and he still hadn't given any information or informed angela's family about her death that is months past and her family didn't know i'm sorry that's fucked up in my opinion no that is fucked up that's fucked up yeah to do that to her family yeah that's fucked up i will i can't even begin to explain what my reaction would be well and what's worse is ellie realized she was gonna have to be the one to tell her family oh no she was like we can't just let this go on she hadn't spoken to her aunt catherine or her cousin michelle in nearly three years at that point oh wow but she felt that not informing them was fucked up yeah so that february she reached out to them despite having been told not to by her father um and she said i couldn't even say anything for like a minute i was crying the whole time when she finally managed to get the words out catherine and michelle were stunned and very confused it wasn't just that angela had died that was obviously devastating they were also shocked that eight months had passed they've been almost since her supposed death and no one had bothered to tell any of them and obviously that's not on ellie that's she's the child in this situation i'm sorry that's on jeff in my opinion that's on jeff now naturally angela's family had a lot of questions about what the fuck happened here so ellie did her best to explain but ellie didn't know a lot yeah she was left in the dark she started with the fight that had led to her leaving the house and moving in with her boyfriend and she told them about the hospitalization and all that but she was like that's really all i know and the story was confusing it was convoluted it was weird and ambling but i can't imagine being on the other end of that well and to michelle it seemed impossible i would feel the same way it just doesn't make sense as a lawyer oh shit michelle knew that you can't simply grab someone off the street or trick them into involuntary hospitalization like you can't do that no such things like we said require court orders and sometimes even law enforcement you can't just do that shit and they're also not going to trick the person into it no but jeff green had never mentioned any of that when he told ellie about the hospitalization he made it seem like he just set it up and they took her well no like out of a grocery store parking lot that's wild yeah that literally sounds like paris hilton's documentary when she was kidnapped from her own fucking home well and it's like she was a minor when that happened it's like that super insensitive like kind of thing that people say like the men in the white coats are going to come take you away yeah that's literally what he is claiming yeah that they came and took her away yep now michelle continued to ask specific questions about the situation that ellie hadn't even considered because again she's going through grief and the confusion of all she's you could be so clouded by grief and one of the things was did you receive a death certificate very valid question in nearly every case that causes a case of death the event is recorded by the state in the form of a death certificate especially if she died at a hospital and that's that the and that death certificate will list among other things the cause of death and any events or illnesses that led to the cause of death and it's going to have name and contact information of the doctor or the coroner that confirmed the death it's going to have all that information uh like a birth or marriage certificate a death certificate is an essential document for anyone that and it's essential for anyone who's left behind after someone dies yeah because they need that to do anything like take care of any of the affairs that are left afterwards so it would have been among the first things the family received after being informed of the death yeah and i've i've prepared many death certificates that is the number one thing you got to get done yeah and you got to get that shit off to that family like they in a timely fashion in a timely fashion because one they're going to want to know the details they're going to have they're literally need that for the funeral home for anything and sometimes there's like questions that they might have like you said like all the doctors are listed like that those are the people that you can go to and that's the whole purpose of the fucking paper in the first place exactly it makes no sense uh but again ellie hadn't seen or received the death certificate and her father had never mentioned one which i guess is not strange that he wouldn't just mention that yeah so maybe she's like all right i should ask him about it yeah but michelle said we thought it was so strange that she had allegedly died eight months ago and there was absolutely no trace of it knowing that the only way they were going to get answers was to get a copy of the death certificate ellie and michelle drove to the medical records office in topeka but the clerk at the records office informed them they had no death certificate on file for angela green and they would ellie said the clerk spent the longest time looking for it finally she came back and said i'm sorry there's no death certificate or record for your mother my stomach just sank i never had a worse feeling in my life that's when all the red flags all shut up at once i just got chills i literally know that like i've read this case and i still get chills hearing that now the next day ellie confronted her father about the fact that there was no record of her mother's death but he was just avoidant and told her that the hospital maybe it was in another state i don't know wait maybe she had died in another state yeah maybe the hospital was in another state you mean the hospital that you visited her at yeah and you're claiming you don't know and he said and if that's the case it wouldn't be on file in topeka yeah but if she got transferred to another state i feel you'd be made aware of that yeah hello michelle said when ellie told me what had happened she slowly started to realize how bizarre everything was oh sometimes you need an outside person yeah like shatter the glass especially when it's just been your core family for that long so i think she needed that outside like glass shattering moment which like you would hate to be there oh horrific now for eight months her father had been very vague and evasive refusing to provide details or simply ignoring ellie's questions during that period ellie was dealing with her own grief and trying to struggling to accept her mother's death yeah and not to to know that the last time they had ever spoken was when they argued and she just disappeared after that well that's the thing like to know how hard she was trying to get in touch with her mom like it didn't like she was probably sitting there thinking it doesn't have to be this way it didn't have to end like no that's the thing and then now she's like is it over like what well now on top of all that it had never occurred to her that her father would lie to her especially about something so important yeah but now with some distance and again the support of her aunt and cousin she was starting to get some perspective on the situation and she knew something wasn't right and if jeff green wasn't going to give any information at this point angela's family did the only thing the police i mean yeah we have not seen angela in eight months you are claiming eight months ago she died where is she oh so i should say in over eight months where's her body right like i'd be like that must have been so infuriating where the fuck is she now on february 15th 2020 michelle called the prairie village police department and explained the whole thing because they had no evidence of a death or even a crime the most the police could do was go to the green's house and perform a wellness check on angela which means that she's not going to be able to go to the green's house and perform a wellness check on angela which means that she's not going to be able to go to the green's house makes no sense which makes no fucking sense her family is being told that she died yeah so there's no wellness to be had there when the officers arrived at the house they were met at the door by jeff and when they asked about angela he told them she just left to go meet some friends so she wasn't home what but they were welcome to come in and look around why the fuck would you lie about that what why'd you lie to the police don't do that inside the house there were no signs of a long time i was gonna say i mean hello but there were also no signs that angela was there or had been there in months when the officers explained the situation jeff expressed shock and told them he had no idea why anyone would think his wife was missing or dead because you told your daughter that when ellie and michelle were told about the wellness check they were stunned yeah it was obvious jeff was lying they just didn't know to whom he was lying like because now it's like is he lying to the police or is he like who's he lying is she alive the only way to know is to detectives in prairie village to continue looking into the situation was for a family member to file a missing persons report so the following morning ellie went to the department and filled out the paperwork which i'm also like hey guys do you think it's fucking weird that you went in the house and there's no sign of her but he literally just said she just went out with her friends her daughter is saying she hasn't seen her in eight months and that he told her she died a month eight months ago while she was there her father called her on her cell phone and detectives recorded the call oh on the call ellie confronted her father with all the discrepancies and lack of detail when it came to her mother's death um and like can you even call that a discrepancy this is what he said to her about finding out that she had died he said i got a call at work that she was going to the hospital to get checked out i thought you had people come and take her to the hospital right and then i got a call that she was being evaluated and then i couldn't see her until the following weekend and ellie interrupted her father to ask where she was hospitalized because like you're saying you were coming to see her right and jeff said he didn't know he would have to look into it look into you literally said you were going there. Jeff claimed that after a few weeks, he got a call from someone at the hospital informing them that Angela was dead. I'm also like, dude, I have been in situations where people have had to go to the hospital and spend time there when they didn't want to. We could see them. Yeah, exactly. We didn't have to wait to see them. And so this is what he said on the call. I got a call that she had passed away in funeral things. And what do I want to do? And I'm like, oh, my God. And it's a crazy time. And I can't I can't hardly think straight. And I got a call that someone was going to come by the house and pick up money for the cremation. And I got an urn and they dropped the urn back by. It was all done by phone. And now that I think about it, it was like and then he went on. So where's the urn? And why did you tell the police that she was out with her friends, dog? Well, to everyone in the room listening to the call, it was clear that Jeff was uncomfortable with this line of questioning from his daughter and was clearly caught off guard and literally just talking. Yeah. Jeff had no information about where Angela had been hospitalized, who her doctors were and no details about who specifically had called him to inform him of the death. Also, they don't just come to your house to pick up money for your cremation. That's not how that works. You have to you have to seek that out. When Ellie asked about her mother's body because she was like, oh, you have an urn now? We have her body now. Jeff told her the body was cremated and the ashes were returned to him by someone from the psychiatric hospital. But he continued with all the vagueness. Then he said something wild. He said, I got the urn back and there's no I didn't check it until just this past weekend and I opened it up and it's empty. So there were no ashes in it. That's not a thing. This man is claiming. First of all, I was told about 15 different stories is now claiming that they came by, took money, money, please. And then they said, we'll bring you back an urn. They brought him back an urn. He didn't tell anyone about the urn. Not his daughter. No one. No. And then this past weekend, so weird that you're calling me right now this past weekend. I just as one does, you just open that urn up, you know, and he looks in and it's just empty. And he's like, fuck, dude, they didn't. Yeah. Was anything in the urn? Dude, because that's the thing. Like we've heard those crazy cases where people find out that it's not their loved one in the urn, but there's always something in the urn. He said, and I quote, I open it up and it's empty. So, hey, that's not a thing. That feels different. That's not a thing. Yeah. That's not a thing. Sure isn't. What? Sure isn't. What? The detectives in the room were fucking shocked by what Jeff was telling his daughter because the story was preposterous. And also because they'd been told. Yeah. Oh, she just ran out with her friends. Yeah. Don't mind that there's no sign of her in this house. My favorite part of that was they were like, that's when he was like, that's weird. I don't know why anyone would tell you that she was missing or dead. You, you supposedly had an urn that you thought was filled with her ashes. Well, the more they spoke, the more bizarre the story became. You can look up like a full transcript. I think of that. He, the gaslighting is unbelievable. I always just wonder, like, in situations like this, I'm like, how do you find yourself to be believable in this moment? Like, I'm not saying one thing or another. I'm just saying, like, your story is preposterous. Your story is wild. And you think that people are just going to take that at face value? Yeah. This story doesn't make sense. Now. I'm screaming. Jeff told Ellie that a few months after Angela had supposedly died, he was driving home and spotted someone coming out of their house. Wait, no, no, no. What? Sorry. A few months after Angela had supposedly died. He was driving. Jeff was driving home and he saw someone come out of his house. Okay. He claimed that he was still several blocks from the house, so he couldn't make out any of the person's features before they got in a car and left. According to Jeff, he hadn't given the incident much thought. You didn't think about that? No. What? No. If I see a motherfucker that I don't know come on out of my house, get in a car and drive away, you bet your bottom dollar I'm following their ass. Yeah. No, he said. And I'm definitely going to give it a lot of thought. He said, it's given. Someone just came out of my house. It was weird. That's on some Lexapro at a level that I've never even learned. He had to have been vibing because for you not to care about that at all. For you to have no anxiety about that, I don't know anyone that medicated. No, I don't either. Dog, what? But you know what's crazy? Now that he was being- You know what's crazy? Everything you've said so far. Now that he was being pressed about it, he had an idea. Tell me. He said, now that I'm being pressed about it, I think that- Angela might still be alive. And she came back to the house to get her things while I was out. And just like set up a big conspiracy where somebody was going to come steal your money for an urn. Yep. Needless to say, by the time the call ended, everyone in the fucking room was wildly suspicious that something terrible had happened to Angela Gray. Is he saying that that was the figure that got in the car? Yeah. I know Drew pretty fucking well from several blocks away. I'd be like, that's that motherfucker. There he is. I would know if that was John walking out of the house. From several blocks away. You don't know if that's your wife of how many years, Angela? And also, it's the whole idea that one, he's talking to his daughter. You are just talking shit to your daughter here, like just spewing shit about her mother. And then it's like, you're sitting here saying you got an urn with her body. And actually, what's weird is I checked it last weekend and nothing's in there. So that's wild. It doesn't have her body. It is just made of urn. And then actually, now that I'm being- Now that we're talking about it, maybe she came in the house and I saw her. Maybe that was that figure that left however long ago and I just didn't think about it again until right now. The thing about Jeff, one thing about Jeff is he's not going to give it a lot of thought. So by the time this call ended, everyone in the room was like- Da fuck? What happened here? Yeah. Detective Jason Wakefield said, there was no record of any deaths. We contacted numerous hospitals and, he says mental hospitals. They never had any record of Angela. We checked for death certificates nationwide. There were no death reports. And we know that you cannot cremate somebody without some sort of death certificate. Yup. So investigators began looking into Angela. They're looking into Angela's disappearance now because they're like, well, that just gave us everything we need to now look into this. Yeah. It's weird as fuck. Yeah. Like, what the fuck is going on here? That gave them everything they needed for them to look into Angela's disappearance. But they immediately ran into a dead end. Angela had no social media presence, no real life friends really, or even acquaintances. That's really sad. And especially none that she would turn to in like a moment of crisis. Yeah. And she had none of the financial to- financial tools either, like credit cards that you could use to track someone's movements. Oh. Captain Adam Taylor said she was never employed. She had never had a credit card. She had only been to the dentist twice, to the doctor once, when Ellie was born. Oh. Quite simply, it was as though Angela had literally vanished into thin air. Yeah. And almost like she didn't exist prior. Yeah. Like here one day, gone the next, all without leaving any trace behind. That's so scary. The other- The other roadblock they faced was Jeff himself. Evidently. By that time, Jeff had purchased a house in Lawrence near the university, which he intended to fix up for Ellie. Detectives went to the house to talk to him, but when Jeff opened the door, he didn't say a word. He just handed them his attorney's business card and closed the door. Oh. Yeah. That's a vibe. Wakefield said, It's not a normal encounter that the first time I knock on your door, you just come to the door with a card for your attorney. Yeah. That's very unusual and definitely made me think there was more. There's a lot more going on. So even if you're not- Yeah, it's unusual. Like guilty of something? That doesn't look good. No. Like nobody's going to say that looks good. Just by anyone's definition of that. No. Unable to speak with Jeff directly, Wakefield turned instead to the family. And according to Jeff's brother and his wife, they received a call from Jeff a few weeks after Angela supposedly went into the hospital. He told them she had been discharged and had a stroke at home and died as a result. So what is that, the 78th story? Yep. But they hadn't heard anything. Yep. Anything else about it since then? This news came as a surprise to Ellie, of course, who had for months tried to get information from Jeff's side of the family. Oh. According to Ellie, her extended family was unusually avoidant around the issue of her mother and the most anyone would tell her was there may have been an accident and your dad needs to get a lawyer. Can you imagine your family, that's how they describe what happened to your mom? Well, and also that's valid. It's vastly different from she had a stroke because that's not an accident. Yeah, there may have been an accident. What is the implication there? And why does he need a lawyer? Right. Like, what is going on? Where would you go with that? Like, why is this extending all the vagueness? Yeah, it just, the more you look into this case, the stranger and stranger it gets. Yeah. And according to Ellie, the more she pushed for information, the more kind of like combative her aunt and uncle got. That's shitty. She said family members reprimanded. for asking questions. - About her mother? were like, why can't you just let it go? Can't let it go? Because it's the presumed death of my mother? There's one big reason I can't let it go. Where's my mom? Yeah, where is her body? I have yet to see evidence of her in any form. Why can't you just let it go is crazy. Now, because of the various conflicting stories Jeff had told and the fact that Angela appeared to have literally vanished, Wakefield was able to get a warrant to search the house in Prairie Village, as well as a property he shared with a friend in Olathe. Jeff shared a property with a friend? Okay. They were able to get warrants for, search warrants for both of those places. And the place in Olathe is where he stored tools in a car. But because the house in Lawrence had been, the one near the university, had been purchased after Angela went missing, the judge denied the warrant to search that property. Huh. That annoys me. I realize it's the law. It's annoying, but also I guess it makes sense. No, I totally get it. It's just, like, literally on a purely shallow, I'm annoyed by this level, I'm annoyed by that. Yeah. No, I feel exactly the same. The law makes sense. Like, I'm annoyed. The laws, sometimes the law is so tough. I know, because it's like, it makes sense logically. Yeah. And it's a protective thing in case, you know, like, they can't just. Yeah, innocent. You can't just run around searching everybody's house. Like, that's. Well, it's like, it makes sense because it's a protective, a protective thing, but it also makes sense to get a warrant for it because, what if something was there? It's just, and so many stories have been told, I feel like it's justified. But in March, an investigative team conducted a thorough search at the Prairie Village house, and among the more interesting items discovered in the search was the urn that Jeff claimed had been given to him by the hospital. Oh? There were no ashes inside and no evidence that it had ever contained any ashes. Upon further investigation, they learned that the urn had been recently purchased. Stop. They also discovered Angela's purse at the house, which still contained her driver's license and passport, both things that she was unlikely to have left behind. Well, and also, like, I don't, would you even be able to be admitted without proper ID? I have no idea. I don't, I don't know either, but that's, I would think not, but I don't know. Now, the property in Olathe proved a much more arduous search than the house in Prairie Village. It was much larger, 35 acres. Wow. It also contained a large pond and several buildings and storage units. Investigators brought in additional people to help with the search, including a dive team to search the pond, but they found no evidence of Angela anywhere. A few weeks later, though, Detective Wakefield learned that the property in Olathe would have looked quite different at the time Angela went missing. In the months since she disappeared, the county had started work on a to dump all the excavated dirt, which had amassed in a 40-foot-high pile. Holy shit. According to private investigator Steve Ridge, this area in Olathe would be an absolutely ideal location to dispose of a body, under 30 feet of soil on top of it. It wasn't just Ridge who thought the massive dirt pile could maybe contain some evidence of Angela's disappearance. Many of the officers with the Prairie Village Police Department also thought it could have made a pretty convenient place. Yup. Unfortunately, neither Prairie Village Police nor county law enforcement agencies had the capacity to sift through a pile of dirt and debris that massive. So if anything was hidden there, it was just going to remain undiscovered. Which I'm like, you can't do it, so you just leave it there? Here's the thing. Volunteers? Backup? There's always volunteers for like a search party. Yeah, look at baby Jessica. Why are we not having volunteers? Who wants. I mean. Come in, sift through some dirt. Yeah. See what we can find. That's crazy to me. There's gotta be like some way. There's gotta be something. Yeah, where there's a will, there's a way. So where's the will? Yeah. By the end of 2020, Wakefield and the other investigators had hit a dead end in their investigation. Their primary suspect refused to speak to them, and their search for evidence and leads had turned up literally nothing. And despite having called in the FBI to consult on the case, it had pretty much gone cold. I'm also like, the FBI can't help you sift through the dirt. Yeah. I'm also like, the FBI can't help you sift through that giant pile of dirt. That's what I don't get. According to Ellie, Wakefield and one of the other detectives called her regularly to let her know whether there were any updates in the case, but quote, there really hasn't been. That's so fucked up. While there was little detectives could do to keep the case alive at this point, Ellie and Michelle were not gonna let this go that easily. With no traditional avenues of investigation left to rely on, they turned to social media and started posting videos about Angela and her case on platforms like TikTok. Instagram. Michelle said, I think Jeff intended for Angela to be forgotten about. With the support that I got from social media, I wanted to make sure that the exact opposite would happen. And that's a quote from Michelle. Yeah, that's just a quote. It's not us accusing anybody. Nope. Given the vastness of social media, they weren't expecting, I mean, I don't know what, they were like, we weren't expecting it to blow up because there's so many cases being talked about. You just don't know. But within a few days, Michelle and Ellie's videos had garnered millions of views and gone viral. Within weeks, the campaign had attracted massive amounts of attention, including the attention of Steve Ridge, an Iowa private investigator, who we mentioned before, who reached out to Ellie and Michelle to offer his services free of charge. That was really nice. Yeah. With their permission, Ridge began interviewing the neighbors, who all described Jeff as, quote, very mysterious and, quote, pretty controlling, among other things. Based on everything he learned and read, Ridge came to the conclusion that Angela and Jeff's relationship could at time be a little combative. Okay. He has his own theories about what could have possibly happened in the house that night. Okay. Now, while Steve Ridge worked on his investigation, Ellie maintained a somewhat distant relationship with her father, if only to get more information, you know? Yeah. And again, nothing's come out and nothing's been proven. So, you know, what is she going to do? Although Jeff avoided the subject, Ellie frequently peppered him with questions in their recorded phone calls, some of which ended up online. In one recording, Ellie can be heard asking for details about how it was that her mother ended up being cremated without anyone's consent or a death certificate. I was just going to say, or a fucking death certificate. Jeff said, oh, it seems unusual, much later looking back on it. But at the time, it did not seem odd since I'd never done it before. I don't know. I do. That doesn't make any sense. That's what I mean. I'm just like, I don't know what you're saying. No matter what is going on here, he's not making sense about what is happening here. Well, and he's just like hoping that she takes that for. That's also just word salad. Yeah. That doesn't even, like, that didn't answer the question at all. No. Because it's literally saying, yeah, now it seems unusual. But at the time, I hadn't done before. I don't know. Well, no one's, usually no one's done it. Right. It's not something you do frequently, hopefully. That's very common for people to not have done before. Right. Yeah. Okay. But the calls and additional video content demonstrates how truly bizarre this case has become and always has been. Yeah, it is so bizarre. But it's not really moving it forward, unfortunately. Something needs to move in this case. Something needs to move forward. For three years, detectives with the Prairie Village Police continue to follow up on every lead they receive. But the cases move at a glacial pace. And in that time, Jeff's story has changed several more times. I just feel like somebody has had to have seen something. Now, in the latest version, he claimed that Angela wasn't dead, but had simply run away. Then what's the urn? And why wouldn't you have just said that? And so then did anybody come and was all that, like, was every other story you told fake? And why did you fake those stories? That's what doesn't make sense. And Ellie and Michelle continue to tell people about this case. They've gone on podcasts. They've done- Yeah. The videos, like, all kinds of stuff, like, regional and national news stories, like, they are not stopping and, like, good on them. And in that time, they've also managed to crowdfund $25,000, which they use as a reward for anyone with information that will lead to the case being solved. Wow. That's incredible. Yeah. Ellie said no one deserves to go missing in their story unheard. And hopefully, my father and his family will come to their senses and see the absurdity of the situation. Yeah. And after Ellie announced the award, Steve Ridge, who was still actively pursuing the case, added his own $25,000. Wow. Bringing the total reward to $50,000. He said, I'm putting it up because I know that sometimes money talks. It's strictly for either the location of Angela or it's for the location and identification of her remains. We just want to find her to give that degree of closure to the family. The reward money helps keep the story alive in the press and on social media. And it did for a few months, but without any new information, it was- Falling away and kind of like falling out of the headlines again. Now, after years of searching for her mother and constantly creating content for social media, Ellie realized the case had consumed a lot of her time and a lot of her headspace, and she was losing precious moments of her own life. Yeah. That's valid. Yeah. That's totally valid. In 2023, Ellie made the incredibly difficult decision to kind of step away from the case and focus on her future. Well, you also have to think of the toll that that must take on her. Yeah. on her mental health to have been living that 24-7 and to be that dedicated. And to just keep hitting roadblock after roadblock. You also have to think of how fucking young she is and how young she was to have gone all through all of this. Exactly. She cut ties with her father and his side of the family and she moved to Colorado to finish school. The last time she spoke with Jeff, Ellie asked one final request. She asked that before he dies, will he write her a letter to tell her what happened to her mother? And he didn't respond. He didn't respond. Now, although Ellie decided to move on, Michelle and Steve Ridge continue to pursue every new lead. And Ellie's kind of right there. Like, she's just still got some, like, you know, a lot of stuff happening on the side. Yeah. And Ridge doubled his reward for information. And in March 2026, he announced that there had finally been some new information that not even the Prairie Village police knew about. Oh, fuck. You said March of 2026? Yes. Wow. He said in an interview with local news station, KCTV5, I had a lengthy conversation with somebody in Kansas City, who had a lot to share with me on this case. A lot of insight. And when you score one of those conversations, it recharges your battery for weeks. But since then, he hasn't made any new announcements. Okay. Well, he might be working on something. You never know. No. As far as the Prairie Village police are concerned, the case remains active and unsolved. A spokesperson for the police department said, anytime there's a new podcast, documentary, or story about Angela Greene, the police department receives numerous information from around the country. However, there's yet to be a tip or piece of information that provides new evidence or a lead that has not been previously investigated. Well, you never know. So, it does work that, like, people hearing it, somebody knows something.
