The Struggle Of Guiding Ep: 3

The transcription captures a candid conversation between two fishing guides, likely friends, who are debriefing after intense guiding weeks. They express physical exhaustion from long days, messy living conditions, and the chaotic pace of their work, comparing it to a "mad dash." The discussion centers on the challenges of guiding in tough conditions, such as strong winds, unpredictable weather, and pressured fish, which often result in clients not catching anything. One guide shares a rewarding moment helping a novice angler succeed, while another recounts a scary experience stuck in a rapid with opposing wind, needing to row hard just to stay still. They also joke about client interactions, like asking if clients can swim or tightening wading belts before potential flips. The conversation shifts to the mental toll of guiding, with one guide admitting to feeling like a failure when clients blank, despite knowing it’s condition-based, and experiencing imposter syndrome. He humorously suggests that being sober and healthy might have led to fewer fish, jokingly blaming the universe for his recent struggles. They discuss the pressure of crowds, gear fishermen, and tournaments that make fishing harder, and one guide considers switching to easier trout trips for less stress, but ultimately acknowledges the need to be kinder to himself. The tone is humorous, self-deprecating, and reflective, highlighting the highs and lows of their profession.

I didn't set up the camera either because I literally just got done with a weak straight. It was like a mad fucking dash. I mean you sound like you're in the same boat. I got done. And every time I talk about guiding like that I feel like such a bitch because like I'm just like I did six days in a row like I worked in Alaska. We did like a hundred or whatever in a row. But you just have to do everything here. And it's just like there's pros and cons. But like yeah sleep in in the back of my truck like I'm 19 or something just a cooler and a little you know air mattress if you want to call it that sleeping bag going to bed at like seven because there's nothing to do. I'm in a campground. I don't party anymore. So I'm like I'm gonna party by going to bed at 7 a.m. or 7 p.m. So yeah I got my butt kicked with those fish. I drove the couple hours back like trucks destroyed like just garbage fire just trash and rock stars and food wrappers and jackets and fly. I mean you know how it is just a bomb. I get back like unload all that stuff like oh stop and wash the boat like come home dogs going nuclear right. So like trying to play with them like just death smell like death. I showered once there and it was just like didn't even do anything. Anyways like came upstairs I was like I looked at like the GoPro's like I don't give a fuck about video right now. It's like plug this shit in dinner. I'm just like I can't even cook. I've got like a smoothie with some honey and fruit. I'm just like that's what we're doing right now. I haven't eaten yet. I'll figure that out afterwards. I feel yeah 10 p.m. perfect time for dinner. Yeah right for some fast food or something before staying up late getting ready for you know six more days tomorrow. Is that your deal for this week? You got I have one day off and I need it to scout and so I'm gonna go scout but yeah I'm gone the rest of the time. I might have actually I might have more like 10 in a row. So I'm actually not working the shop Friday because I got a three person trip so I'm taking out of all these three people trips. I don't know but these ones are friends so it's okay so it's cool but yeah three people's hard. Yeah I needed that. I don't four person walking away the other day. Yeah I mean walking away more manageable kind of but kind of in mopping and like yeah drink my season. Yeah and like they were they were good casters and stuff but they were they're older guys so like you know it's I went to the first spot and they're just like I was getting a barometer on like what I can put these guys in and there's like yeah now I'm like all right today I'm like today's gonna be pretty hard guys and yeah it was but I will say that some good came out of it a lot of people they had a really good week. There's one guy who a lot of guys been fishing like the whole lives as one guy that was kind of brand new and he was having a really rough week so I spent time with him and got him yeah I got him a few and and he like got the most fish that day so that made me really happy because he had been like on a scale of one to like geriatric you know on desk doors though. No no no they're they're they're pretty cool but they were just careful smart older guys and they're like two years older than us they're like they're like 48 you're like these old guys though yeah totally but yeah they were just they were being very careful and and yeah it was hard because I was like unfortunately for this hatch the if you're not getting rode to the other side or down somewhere cool or on the res or something like that I keep telling people in the shop the closer you see a spot and the closer you are to death when you're fishing the better fish are gonna catch just because they're unpressured and yeah you just if you belly go down some crazy shit standing on a boulder like and it's just like 10 feet deep swirly-ass gnarly water underneath you I'm like they'll probably be a big fish there if you got an easy spot it's gonna be pretty pretty tough yeah I mean I don't even fish I can't even spill the shoes man but what uh disc we've got like it's I mean I like you know I know the basics of going out there and it's just kind of a gong show but like is that kind of the number one tell me your top five tips and tricks for the dishes no just but like it that's kind of the key is just like getting gnarly and like get in and with the rattlesnakes and the ticks and then bushwhack in and and then you can have pretty good time the more the risk the more the reward it is just yeah I'm gonna pass you know I saw the information on that river and hatch and I've looked it over and I'm gonna go for a hard pass on that yeah yeah I don't blame you maybe uh maybe I will when I find another option when I get good at something else but until then pretty much all I know I'd find people was trout and then every now and then a steelhead and that's even probably pushing it like yeah well I mean but they caught fish right did it yes and uh whether it's been really rough last week just that god damn wind I'll tell you know I got stuck in a rapid I was just my boat was in a rapid very very fast water and very very fast wind going the opposite way and the wind and they were at kind of a standstill it was when uh I don't know two wizards are like pointing their staff at each other and it's just like in the middle that was me in a drift boat just hanging out in a rapid not going anywhere and I was just like wow this is really intense yeah you're saying you had like a crowd too so people are like hey man like are you trying to go down river or uh like what we're just like what are you doing I'm like I'm trying to go man I'm making a living over here people okay I'm living the dream I was in such a tight spot and uh I played it off but it was a spot I didn't want to get because you get in those spots where you got to go down there's like a pretty gnarly wave train one that you don't really want to go straight down and then there's like three feet of water that you got to go down before you're sucked into this just disgusting hydraulic eddy one of those ones that like you just get in and it feels like it just tries to suck the boat down from underneath you and I do not like that feeling at all and so you just got to ride this little line but I was just stuck in that little tightrope just rock hard place me and it was pretty fun meanwhile your guys you're like so like on the baseline on your fifth your fifth song on your third album like was it where you playing in the key of C and you're like we're like I don't want to think this boat bro and they're like yeah anyways like when you got that Grammy like how many people do you think actually shit their pants in that audience were they like blown away and you're like what like I can't even hear you it's blowing 25 up river right now like yeah these guys these guys were just like are are we cool and I'm just like yeah man I'm like we're not optimal but I'm like we're gonna be fine but we're just gonna be here a minute I'm gonna have to row really really hard and move pretty much none for like a while and then eventually we'll get popped out either into the Eddie or into the rapid and yeah I'm cool with either just as long as it's not right here right now just don't want to get it you got to start you got to start fuck with them a little bit though like when they're like for sure you know are we okay be like y'all know how to swim pretty good right like just yeah I'm not praying we were gonna have to but yeah like what's your let me get a read on your swimming capabilities yeah you got that waiting belts on right you got you should yeah or like you're going in the rapid be like hey you might want to tighten that waiting belt up you know just a little bit like I'm in a boat you're like yeah but you may not be for long yeah I haven't flipped in here and forever listen I haven't lost a drift boat in like weeks and like one of those chalkboards like in your drift boat where it's like days without it's not totally on there they're like what's this like I don't worry about it my buddy Jeff that a guide with an Alaska we would always get the question you know like how long you guys been guiding up here which like whatever you know people just want to know what you're doing it's common question and he had the funniest response I heard one time we were getting ready to push off so all the guys were on their boats we have our clients and whatever his guide for that or his guy for that day nice dude was just talking to me he's like yeah like so how long you been guided and Jeff and he's like I don't know what time is it I just died he just pushed off tick off I was like that's great just answer and Spanish is as me Dia Prima live like I'm a boat driver man fish pointer water watcher yeah well I mean say or I'll say what I want for trout obviously but at least your guys actually caught some fish yeah there I can't say the same how was your week I mean there was some pretty uh pretty quiet nights I mean I was by myself so it was pretty quiet too but just a lot of a lot of staring at the camper top uh in the sleeping bag just being like what the fuck like I don't know what's a matter with me but I just I'm like let me find the hardest fish to catch and then make it pretty much year round it's like oh winter steelhead it's like yeah it's it's got its own you know struggles you're like you can't see the fish the weather's shit blown out or it's too low or your guys can't cast and you're working on cast and all day that's great. And then guys that can cast get bad weather conditions or the rivers crowded. And you're like, all right, we got out of winter steelhead season. Like, all right, springtime here we go. And you're like musky. And you're just like, yeah, I can see them. They won't even move. They won't even turn their head. Sometimes fly goes right by it. Other times they're like, I follow from five feet away. Other times they rush it and chew on the the hackle and then, you know, they get to the boat and it's, you know, okay, it's 100% the client's fault, but it's not because they don't do it enough, right? So like, the fish comes in, they just don't get the rod deep enough. So the fish needs the boat and it turns off. But like, yeah, it was, I mean, six days in a row of just beating my head against a wall and like, I just, I mean, nothing, no fish, no fish hooked. But while we hooked one the first day, it was the guy's first time musky fishing. It was pretty cool that he hooked one, but like, a lot of people, there's a specific strip. I want them to do and a lot of guys will be doing like the little wooly bugger trout strip where they're just like pop, pop, pop, pop, like doing these tiny little strips. And I'm watching the fly just sink. Like, they're not even pulling enough line to move it. So it's just like slowly going, I'm like, longer trips, you know, go ahead and move that fly. 28,000 articulations in there. You can go ahead and make it dance like I don't even know how you're making this fly come through like a number two pencil without moving. It's like your flies. Yeah. Amazing half a yak and yeah, it's like, like, tail and hackles and flash. And it's just like, just looks like a piece of moss like slowly sinking through the water. I'm like, I don't even know visually how I'm seeing this. I'm like, move the fly like, oh, okay. I'd give it like two like good strips and then back to just pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. So when the fish ate it, like he he stripped it, I don't know, four inches and, you know, shocker. It didn't pierce a fucking concrete mouth. And yeah, it threw it. But it was cool that he that he saw it eat and all that stuff. And then yeah, the next five days, it was just seeing fish. But yeah, I think it's partially my fault. Not the guiding part. There's like, there's people out there already. I mean, it's mid-May. There's like four boats gear fishing for muskies. I saw probably three other boats throwing flies for them. So I already feel like the fish are pressured. Like they're just like, no, we're not like we ate flies like for a week and now like we've seen, you know, 20 people fishing for us for a week and we just shut off because it was just so frickin hard. Just not active. So we'll see if the water warms up. They have a musky tournament there every Memorial Day. Why? Like a fucking idiots. You're like, do you want to put all these fish down right off the bat? Just a bunch of gear guys out there throwing just tons of shit pounding the piss out of them. And then they're shocked and they're like, God, it's kind of slow the rest of the month. Like, yeah, you harassed every fish in that like with 20 boats for two days. Like they're going to be out of it for a while. It's like, at least make it challenging and make it like at the end of the summer or something like that. It's just like, oh, they're up out of the deep on wood. Look, let's go fucking destroy them. So yeah, it's probably not going to be good for a couple days because they're going to be out there doing their thing. But it's cool to see more fly guys target him. It's like kind of a double edged sword. So I'm like, oh, that's rad. Like people are, you know, getting into fishing for more. And then the other half means like, God damn it. It's so crowded out here. Yeah. But I know you want to you want to share you want to share the good thing and keep it secure. That's always tough with bands with taco carts with anything like that. Like, it's tough. You want to share it. You just want to share it with good people. Yeah. I don't mind seeing. I don't mind seeing people. I just don't want them to suck. Yeah. I don't want people to choose out there, you know? Yeah, and everybody was like playing nicely. I mean, a couple of the gear guys, it's kind of like, it's almost universal. Like you'd be working a bank and they'll just pull in right there and just like throw anchor or like put it on spotlock and just start hucking it. It's like, maybe they don't know there's like specific areas out there for sure. They're kind of big, but there's so much water out there. You're just going to pull up like 50 yards from me and start fishing. I don't say anything to them. I just kind of go around them or whatever, but yeah, it's kind of interesting. It's like the same thing. They'll sit on a spot and literally pound the piss out of that fish until it leaves or it just bites out of just annoyance. We're like, I'm just constantly on the trolling motor just like power fishing down a bank or whatever. Yeah. But yeah, and then the weather is classic springtime weather, you know, it's like for three days it rained fucking so goddamn hard for an hour than it would hail, then it would be sunny as shit, then it'd be windy, then it'd be calm and you know, fish just don't like all that inconsistency in the the barometers, you know, looking like a sine wave just up down, up down, up down. So I think those part of it, all the people that came out and fished, it was awesome. I mean, I'll have a good time, but it was like everybody's like, goddamn, like this is rough. And it is. And then I get down with that and I'm like, oh man, what next? And it's like, how about carp fish? And it's like, oh, is that easier? It's like, not really a little bit maybe just because there's more of them, but yeah, that's that's the season. That's the season right there. Yeah. And then why don't you just take all those variables and how the stars must align perfectly to get one of these fish and why don't you just base your whole livelihood and all your bills on that? Yeah, I mean, why don't you just gamble everything on that other nature? On other nature. Yeah, I'll never be like, oh man, like, okay, everybody's jobs are even, you know, the bagger at Fred Meyer, like man, today's rough. It's like, I get it. Like, everybody's job is equally hard at different points of the day. I mean, maybe people that work on like oil rigs are like, oh, this is a little bit more difficult. You're right. Yeah. Yeah, I love the job. It's just, yeah, just like any job. It's like some days you're like, god damn, man, it is, it is brutal out here. But then you get those, those days, those weeks for everything's, you know, lining up. But to come full circle, yeah, a lot of thoughts there. I was like, god damn, dude, I really for, like, I had like an hour where I was like, I'm just going to start guiding trout next year. Like, am I going to do muskie and may? I'll do carp maybe one month and I'm just going to take people on the McKenzie and put them in a drift boat. I did it for a few years when I started out, dry dropper, like, swing some soft tackles, catch them between five and 20 trout, pull out a little grill, make some hot dogs for an hour, just sit there, talk about how nice it is out. Get paid the same zero stress. It's like, oh, you tangled the nymphs. No problem. Drop anchor and fix them and keep going. No big deal. Oh, you can't cast like, well, whatever, nobody can cast an 11 weight for muskie. So it's the same thing. But you kept, you catch fish like at the end of the day, you're like, oh, we caught two or we caught 20. We caught them. It's like, there's just, there's a lot of days in the season for me. It's like, whether it's winter steel, heading muskie or carp, where it's just, it's something I, I've been working on, but I'm just failing miserably is just being easier on myself. I just take it so fucking personally, even though I shouldn't after all these years. And I know like it's condition based and angler based and, you know, whatever they say, you know, guide not God or whatever, but fuck man, when they don't catch one, it just wrecks me. It's just like, I feel like a total failure. I'm a fucking, you know, what they call imposter syndrome. I've been doing a long time. I'm like, I don't even know why people are paying me. Like, I fucking suck. And they're always like, oh, this is great, man. We'll see you next year. I'm like, was it this fucking blue dude? Like, I didn't do shit. Like you fucking blanked. Like we didn't catch shit. And they're just like, yeah, I'm like, man, it's just like, yeah, man. Yeah, dude, high five. You know, of course, they're, you know, I'm sure they're like, oh, we'd like to catch one. It's not like, oh, I'm glad I didn't catch one today, but yeah. Yeah, mentally wise, it's like, I mean, I really thought today, I mean, it wasn't a serious thought. Well, it was semi serious. I was like, shit, dude, I'm going to start drinking again. I think I was a better guy then. Like I caught more fish during winter steelhead season and more during muskie season for sure, like drinking a shit ton the night before waking up and just being like, I got pulled together and fucking make it happen. Killin it. This last year, we've hooked less fish than the previous 15 years of guide. I'm like, what in the fuck? Like, I feel too good. What? I'm too dumb. You know, I'm, I'm feeling sad. The universe asked the fucking keep you down. Did you get in all healthy and happy? And there's like, and not so fucking fast. Like this dude. What wait, wait, wait, what's going on over here in Portland, Oregon? Like this guy's a fucking wreck usually. What's happening? Oh, he's going to get all like, oh, he went to the doctor and he's apparently all healthy even though he smokes a chimney and oh, like, he's got girlfriend, like emotionally everything's going good, mental. Oh, he used to be pretty good. Yeah, let's go ahead and smash that. Way, way down, way down, step on it and then step on again, mash it again and just kind of let's do like that. You can't have it all, man. Save some for the rest of us, you know? He's so fucking mad. Yeah, man, why don't you just take one trout trip a week just so you can guide somebody into a fish. Yeah, seriously. I need like a, it's like a, and I did, I did realize, yeah, just a little, just a little treat for yourself, just have an easy day where you get paid the same and you're like, you know what, I'm just going to go out and like one day a week and just like, can catch some some people some fish and feel good and then go back to your self-loathing and your your fucking pain. We're gonna sit in the back of your truck and like whip yourself with the chains. What's that holding up the atonement? The atonement? The atonement? Yeah, yeah, yeah. The atonement. Yeah, except the whole time I do that. I did it. If we were out today today was day, you know, we'll talk to like stars or that. Oh, we crushed today. I'm like, oh my god. Like right? Yeah, you won't you won't like that. Yeah, no, it's not going to be that good. Little too much for him. It was fun. I did. He's normally with the trout thing, you know, he's like fairly like he's put people in spots, but I did find it more fun. I actually went like looking for fish and then like found some. I just had my guy in a spot. He could cast and the wind wasn't fucking howling. So I just like, he was fishing at the tree. I'm like, he's doing fine. So I walked up and I was just like looking. I kind of look at the spot, watched it for a minute. So I'll big ass trout. And it was so much fun to like do the whole thing. This happened on my first day guiding, which I was wondering if being an addict and definitely one for fishing, if I can hang out all day on a river and watch people fishing, not do it. I was very concerned about that. And it still drives me crazy sometimes. But the first time I kind of went and I took a guy that was on the res, nobody would ever take me to a spot. Just a spot that I'd always driven past and just like I fucked it from a distance for a while. And I'm like, hey man, you want to get adventurous. Let's like just go try this spot that I've been I've been I've all in. So I went, I gave him the fly. I told him to see him. I'm like just cast up there at three feet in front of that rock. Drifted by just having a feeling about the spot. And like first cast, he does it. Great cast, perfect drift gets hammered by a big fish. That dopamine pain goes off. And it was like, it was almost even better than catching one. And I was just like, hell yeah, I don't even need to purse. I don't even need to physically fish to catch fish. This guy's going to do it for me. And that was rat. And I did that the other day and caught this kid like day. He's been fishing for a couple of years. But God, I'm as like biggest trout that he's got. And like, and it was just one of those I was just like, do this exactly. And he listened to everything. Like when I listen to you and I get fish, I got that and it feels awesome. And, uh, and yeah, it was really, it was cool. Yeah, that's that's, I mean, yeah, when you start getting a taste for that, the right person, I think a lot of guides that's what they get kind of, you know, take the tour or track the two for it. Um, yeah, for years, it was like when I would get somebody in my boat. Not if it was their first time steelheading, but if they'd been doing it for a couple weeks or definitely for a couple months or like that magic like for some reason, like a year to a year and a half to like, I've been doing it for a year and a half. Doesn't mean if they go every day or even once in a year and a half. It's like year and a half. It's like the magic number for a winter steelhead. That haven't got one yet. I mean, I did some long days and some just crazy shit of just like trying my ass off because to be there on the water when someone catches their first winter steelhead, like the look on their face and like all the conversations they have afterwards, it's like they just straight adrenaline dope. I mean, just shot just straight mainlining it. Yeah. It was like so greedy. I wasn't even really stoked for them. I mean, obviously I'm super stoked, but I'm just like, oh yeah, I remember that. Like I still remember mine. Everybody remembers their first right. And it's just like revisiting that, you know, like just like old girlfriend shit or whatever you're just like, dude, this is this shit and just like soaking it up. Yeah, and you just be just high as fuck for like, you know, a couple hours or something. You know, like that was just so cool. And yeah, it's cooler. Yeah, when you come into those, you know, it could be anything. It could be somebody's biggest trout or just a cool eat. You know, for me, it gets kicked up a notch. The harder the stuff is. So like when people get their, you know, muskie or like a big car, but for sure right now, it's the muskie. Like when people hook one and it hits the net, like I am fucking jacked. Like there's a lot of screaming and like just adrenaline and just, yeah, I mean, some of my most mellow clients, like my buddy Sam who's saying, you know Sam, yeah, ginger kid. Yeah, he's probably just 30s. He's so mellow. He's such cool dude. And like when he got his first one, like that's like the most like energetic, like he's just like fuck like he's just jacked, you know, brings out like, I don't know, just like just people lose their lose or not. That is, that is so cool. Yeah, I can't wait to get a muskie man. Yeah. So it's like, it's pretty, it's when you think about it's like a pretty cool job. I always like tell people the hard days are some of the worst for sure makes you better. Obviously, just any job, any job, a tar, or anything, a tar is going to make you better, but rarely do you get a job where you get to see people like at their absolute happiest. Like for that moment, they're just like fuck like all right in the world, right? So that's that's something that's a pretty big bonus to have a job that you get to see that occasionally. Well, for sure, when you just make people that happy and get to be a part of it and like kind of, they yeah, steer them in that direction to have that experience. Yeah, that is awesome. We do talk. It's nice to talk about something nice. Yeah. Be positive. Oh man, you got you out. Yeah, especially after today, I was driving home. I was like, man, this pause is not going to go well. Like I'm fucking grumpy asshole right now. Like it's getting there. Look at us. I'm going to be tired. I did drink two energy drinks on the drive home. Yeah. That might have been a little bit too much, but that was like four hours ago. You got to get home. Man, I did so much driving because my ex instead of watching my dog, she took a vacation during not like she knew, but like during fucking Sam and fly hatch. I mean, I can play this because I don't live there and I don't not date her. She's the worst ever. Oh, my father worse. And and yeah, she like she took off and and so I had a poor cold. He's stuck here. Three healers and and he's guiding and shit to his. I'm just like, I'm like, I don't know what to do. I'm on the two shoots like for fucking nine days in a row or something. I don't know. And but so I was driving back and forth just to like give him a break, get some dog time. And I did like I did four or five of those just like go guy and I've been doing the late shifts. So I get off the water at dark. I'd get home at midnight or one and just go straight back to like do my dishes for the trip. Like hang out with the dogs heart like sleep like three hours and go back to him up and it was brutal. I've been so tired and it's the driving that kills you right like once you start guiding, you're kind of like, okay, you're in the mode. You get done guiding. I've done some of that back and forth to you know up to Washington or wherever. But like you get done and you're just like driving back and it's you know late. Like you said and like all the headlights are like hurting your eyes and then you get home and you're kind of jack. So like you can't really go to sleep and yeah man that's a that's a hard turnaround. It is it is rough. Luckily last couple days I got to take one dog so it made Colby's life easier and I got a buddy's house who let me stay at and mop and where I could keep my dog and my fucking dog bird who like pisses and shits all the time in my house. I love her to death. She's my best friend. She's a punisher you know her. Yeah. So I was really worried about that whole thing. Not a single fucking potty. I left her away for like 10 hours dude and like Matt was Matt was there. He took her out. You know he got home a bit earlier than I did. But like not a fucking thing. Perfect goddamn angel dog. Like no barking, no scratching the doors did not fuck up one single thing. That's all I did talk to her on the way. I'm like listen we need to be on our best behavior. Yeah. Might have a situation where I can guide the disputes and also have a dog around and that's like that's really cool. Yeah. So she did very good. That's great. Yeah. My dog's not so much good nights blowing his butthole straight out of his butthole. Before I left just got into something or whatever just like liquid lava and I'm like well I you know. Oh yeah that was the night that we were supposed to do the podcast. Yeah. I might do them with both ends and just like him just like just being a menace and yeah it's just been like that for well the whole week I was gone and so now he's just underneath the table and I mean my eyes are watering. He's just every now and that's it's like and I was like oh god. Oh that fucking sound dude. Damn dude. And he's just eating just turkey and I'm like what is upsetting? He's such a garbage dog. He's just half lab half golden. Got him from the middle of like nowhere in Malala and he is just the biggest princess like it's like I got him from a like breeder in Beverly Hills like he's like I can only oh my god. Good night. That is fucking so bad dude. He's like I can only eat the moat. Literally the most expensive dog food on the planet. Sensitive stomach bullshit. It's just like you try to feed him anything else and he's just like I'm just gonna fucking explode everywhere. You're a dumpster dog like you're a lab golden. you should be able to eat like gasoline and be fine. Yeah. He's not. He's a big-ass baby. My internet. Yeah. I was talking to my client today. I was like, I love my dogs more than anything, but when they go, I will not be getting another dog. I'm not going to do it. I won't have any pets for, I don't know, many, many years. Just not going to go. Sorry, it sounds like coldly so. Yeah. Natalie's probably going to be here in a second. You'll hear these dogs absolutely lose their shit. Yeah. So let her in. Yeah. But yeah, so you got a bunch of days coming up. I do. And I'm psyched. It's been hard to feel super good. As a new guy, this is like, I'm actually booked for a while. Yeah. That's rad. It feels odd. Yeah, dude, I'm stoked for you. You're killing that. I've been, I've been trying. I've been doing a lot of things, doing new things. And I decided to do a band in my program on the dishes. I was like, have my spots picked up and sometimes somebody's there or like, all right. And I was like, you know, no, just go down different every day. Just that looks good over there. Let's go try that. That looks good over there. Well, not over there. I stand, river left. Yeah. And dude, I set up a, I got the anchor system. I fixed it up, fixed it up. Did it pull through yet kind of it stuck at the end. I like, I cinched down duct tape like this super tacky duct tape I have. So I made it skinnier and like stuck two ropes together. Went all the way to the end. And then I popped it out. But it was enough to where I could get in with some needle nose pliers after a while and pull it through. So a long ass anchor rope. I got to add a like, I got one of those, I forgot I have like a really expensive NRS fly rod holder on my other boat that I never use. I'm like, what am I doing? And I put that on this one. I put that Rackie gamey on the back so I can all my bullshit. I just totally, I've pipped my ride today. It was awesome. Oh, that's nice. Yeah, you get that. But I put out, I was doing that up until I went shopping and did this. So I have not cleaned your drift. But so I'll do that one day. It's a pressure washers for man. Yeah. Yeah. I got that's that's the plan. Like, oh my god. I got that thing sandy. Yeah. But it was working. Yeah. That was great. Well, I'm, uh, yeah, I'm out all this week. And then we were doing our intro class. I'm like all over the place. I got three musky days then a bass trip then two intro to fly fishing trout trips then a bass trip and then musky for the next week. So I'm going to just be all over the Skydamp state. But you're going to be dead. But maybe a little variety will be nice. Yeah, he kind of cool to mix it up. Yeah, get skunked in like different places. Yeah, you got to blank a little here. Blank a little there. It's like, I'm laying it into it though, man. I love this time of the year. I basically work every day, you know, from May 1st to the end of September. And it just kind of goes by in a blur. But, um, at least like, you know, the credit card that gets maxed out all winter gets paid off. So it's like, oh, that takes a little stress off like able to fix some stuff on the truck or the boats or stuff. So yeah, it's killer and just spend it ton of time outside. Yeah. Cool, man. Let's, uh, maybe wrap it up. Let's see. Anything else? And we can kind of, uh, maybe give a little bit of a fish or a port something to, um, yeah, touch on the next week after you've been out. Yeah. Because like that sand fly hatched by wrapping up in the next week or like 10 days. Yeah, it is. But it should be pretty good because it's pretty hot out there. Oh, yeah, yeah. The weather's kind of like it's going to be a ton of people. However, the fishing is going to be really good. So it's kind of the, yeah, it's, uh, it'll, it'll leave it out to, you know, just okay. Yeah. And then I want to hear about that, uh, that high mountain stream that you're going to go scout and then I'll have a fast report, um, yeah. And hopefully a little muskie report too. So it's become, come cool to go through. All right. Let's do it next week. All right, man. I will catch you then. Lead, bro. Hey, buddy. Bye.

FAQs

Musky fishing is tough due to weather inconsistencies, pressured fish from tournaments, and the difficulty of getting clients to perform the correct strip technique, often leading to missed hooksets.

Guides believe that spots closer to danger or harder to access have less pressure, so bigger fish are more likely to be caught there, unlike easy spots where fish are more pressured.

The guide's boat got stuck in a rapid due to strong wind opposing the current, leaving him in a tense spot. He had to row hard to eventually get out, either into an eddy or down the rapid.

After tough weeks with musky and steelhead, the guide considered trout guiding for less stress, as it offers more consistent catches and a relaxed atmosphere, like making hot dogs on the river.

The guide struggles with feeling like a failure when clients don't catch fish, despite years of experience. He takes it personally but is working on being easier on himself, knowing conditions and angler skill play a big role.

Musky tournaments with many boats and gear fishermen can pressure the fish, making them less active and harder to catch for weeks afterward, which frustrates fly guides.
