The Sport That Refuses to Recognise Half Its Athletes

The transcript begins with a discussion about running experiences, contrasting the serene, wildlife-rich trails in the bush (e.g., the Grampians) with the polluted, industrial river tracks in the city. The speakers share anecdotes about encountering kangaroos, reflecting on their dual nature as both iconic animals and pests. They note cultural divides, such as kangaroo sanctuaries versus commercial hunting for meat, and joke about "special edition" kangaroos with unique traits. The main topic focuses on Blaine Burke's critique of backyard ultras. Burke argues that the sport's single-category structure—with only one world champion—disadvantages women, who represent just 5% of participants. Despite impressive performances like Sarah Perry's 95 laps (the unofficial female world record), such efforts are recorded as mere DNFs. He advocates for equity (not equality) by introducing separate world championships and satellite team slots for men and women, aiming to boost female participation and recognition. The speakers agree, noting that the lack of visible female champions discourages growth, creating a chicken-and-egg problem. They also highlight the widening performance gap between men and women in the sport, which they attribute to insufficient support and spotlighting of female athletes. The conversation ends with a call to action for structural changes to foster inclusivity.

Are you working? What kind of work do you? Welcome back welcome back to the polling threads podcast Choice he's under the pump. He said give me a minute to think about a running question boom just straight on the launch me straight into it straight into the fucking intro. So what's your own question? All right, not a running question, but a running observation or I just want I just want to talk about How fucking nice it is to run in the bush Trail running versus running in the city like I spend half my time here when I'm here I run down just like a little river track And I used to think this river track was like beautiful pristine like so nice like oh fuck we're basically in the country and then when I'm at work, I'm running like Near the Grampians and actually last days off last days on I did a run up in the Grampians just near Halls Gapter and like God damn gorgeous beautiful the air smells amazing. There's fucking birds everywhere that tracks really nice It's like buried terrain and like all different bushes and trees and stuff. It's just like fucking beautiful Yeah, it's fucking off its head and I get you and then I come back here and I start running down the river again And I start noticing all the rubbish floating in the water And like if I run far enough I just there's garbage dumps Yeah, that's your runs through the garbage dumps. Yeah, you start running into the industrial bits of like Brooklyn and that gets gross when it gets Industrial and then it gets fucking dumpy Yeah, I mean if you go far enough you can loop back around you get onto the Maribon River. Oh, then you can come back again Yeah Yeah, there's some industrial parts near the Maribon home, but yeah, no, I feel you know, it's what I swear every everyone who is is a runner Not everyone that's such a crazy thing to say But I would say a lot of runners move to the country because They run in the city and then they go out in the country exactly what you do. Yeah, I say what the fuck am I in the city? Yeah, especially if you're spending so many hours out running like fuck it makes a huge difference Yeah, 100% it does. I mean last week I spent 18 hours running back How much was in the country? None I've not switched the other morning. I went for a run and I was trying to figure out I was just running there's heaps of wildlife there too like kangaroos and fucking cows and hella rabbits out there And I was down I was trying to figure out the math in my head of how many kilometers there are in a mile And I was just like counting as I was running And then I saw this movement I looked up and like from me to your way like three meters away There's this fucking massive kangaroo and he's like oh shit and I was like oh shit And then he fucked off but man this kangaroo was like huge and like I expect to see like big reds out and like deep Desert bush to be huge. This was just some fucking gray kangaroo That when it took off took off in slow motion Because just like like it was on the moon. That's how fucking slow this kind was moving Now it was hopping and then it just hopped this fucking full-size barbed wire fence like it was taking a single step Like it was fucking nothing scared the absolute fuck out of me. They do do that And they fucking get big those kinds too. I was like man if he just decided to square up I wouldn't be here now left right good night You don't reckon you'd end that kind I just boot me into the river Oh you ever seen that video of old mate getting Yeah punching that fucking ruin the water there Yeah, that had his dog was joking his dog He actually lost his job for that name Yeah, I heard it because he worked at some wildlife in the center of some shit Like as if you wouldn't take out a kangaroo that's strangling your dog though Honestly and kangaroo I spoke about a last podcast of the podcast before they're the dumbest cunts ever And we literally shoot him for dog meat. Yeah, and they're fucking good dog meat. Yeah Dogs for off that shit. Yeah, you know what I always think is strange is in the northern territory somewhere in the middle there there's uh kangaroo sanctuary And I just think that doesn't make any fucking sense to me as a man who comes from far north west Queensland where I've seen laying cruises with 40 of them strung up by a fucking hook Just going through the middle of town. Yeah, and I just think Sanctuary for what come that doesn't make any sense Yeah, it's funny. There's one up in Port Hetland or they used to be anyway and while a manual and a manueler and I will live in up there We went in like just did the kangaroo experience He had to pat him and feed the little joys and stuff and it's fucking sick And there was these two this French couple were the ones who were like looking after the place Her backpackers just floating through and they're like oh yeah, and like you got to look after and like if you ever see a kangaroo on the road You got a check for a joey and like all this shit then please bring them here and like rehabilitation all this shit And I'm like man the people that I know After they shoot him check for the joey and just slit him from the throat with a bowie knife Yeah, yeah, it's exactly right People used to yeah, they all the guys that I know from up north were just they'd be go ruhun. Yeah, that's what they would um Is that they pay you by the pound or pay you by the kilo when you bring them in So you fucking Shop the tail off. That's obviously good cooking. You can't can't be given that away And then take the rest then they just sell them by like almost a container load. Yeah. allegedly It's pretty um ethically sourced to meet As far as like if you want to eat kangaroo meat as far as like the ethics of it because the kangaroo lives its whole life in the wild bush It's not just some cow that's fucking forced to live through feedlot or like Go through like this traumatic experience of being loaded up onto a furkin trucks and then take into a slaughterhouse So the kangaroos just stand out there living its best life and the Yeah exactly and to even get that license you have to pass a fucking shooting test to show that you could shoot him at a distance Forkin and not just Maimon before you take him out license If you want to sell the meat you have to have the license. Oh, yeah, so does just go to have the license Someone's gonna have a license Someone on speed dial. There's only four licenses and all of Queensland But there's lots of youth with kangies on the back. Yeah, this guy's making millions Oh Yeah, I mean it makes sense But they are such a pest of an animal, but they're also so cute. They're sick. I remember being um There was this national park just north of Perth When I came back from overseas one time took the bus went up there and it was fucking Beautiful. It was so nice up there. I was trying to free camp at this range of quarters Made us pay the 50 bucks a night, which is an absolute fuck me to fucking rot. I couldn't believe it Well, obviously I knew how much it was. That's why I didn't want to pay it. Mm-hmm Anyway When we actually got to stay in the proper camp because you know, you can't just be stragglers out out in the bush there somewhere Bro, they were kangaroos fucking everywhere and at the time Close your ears if you're my misses I had a checkers Slovakian or not checkers Slovakian Because they that's that's the old times. Yeah, that's the old time. Sorry. I had a Partner from Czech Republic and she'd never seen a kangaroo before or a koala, which is also there nice and Fucking blue her dick off. Oh, yeah Fucking craft kangars Yeah, absolutely couldn't believe it and it was you could almost pat on there. No, they were that chill And they were fucking big They were big too. They were fucking eating their son. They wasn't they were not missing lunch breakfast or dinner No, I'm was shooting them out there. No, I know I'm a shooting them. That's why they were so friendly. Yeah I like um, I still get jacked on kangaroos, but like special edition kangaroos What's a special? Oh, just when you see one and you're like that's not a normal kangaroo like that's fucking some different genus or something like one time Yeah on Philip Island we were camping out there and did this nature walk and these kangaroos had like long red fur And they had a little like deep dark red and they had this little white tip on the end of their tails And they're like real long tail too and I was like fuck these are like some winter edition Like limited release Like dope color set fucking yeah Limited they've got like to fucking 55 headshots to get the new skin. Yeah Yeah, they were sick kangaroos. I had jacked on them or like Not that I've ever seen one in the world, but like three kangaroos You know them kangaroos that are like special edition live entries. No, gee. What's this? Yeah, they're less hoppy hoppy more climbing climbing The back legs are like adapted for climbing. I've seen them in zoos and stuff But you get them up in like the danger rain forest and some like heavy duty rain forest Australia edition way up near cancer Yep, there's some wild shit up near cans as well. That's where the castwear is bro. Oh fuck the castwear The fucking strangest looking cut you ever seen guaranteed to disembelly if you look at them wrong Oh, yeah plus it is fuck, but look like they would absolutely fucking gut ya. Yeah, they would they do they're fucking dangerous Yeah, but that chill also now they you shouldn't even go near them I wouldn't look that in their fastest fun like They're fucking adapted for running through the jungle Yeah, but what about the the small version of the kangaroo which is basically the quaker? - Yeah, quacka, there's also a quinda. - Oh, how do we get? - That's where a quinda one time, that was fucking quinda. - Special edition. (laughing) Small size, fucking. It looks like a quacka, but more of a pointy nose. - Really? - Yeah, there's heaps of different fucking animals like that, that are all just like variations. - But quackas, they do kind of have a pointy nose, don't they? - Just look up a picture of a quinda. It's like a quacka, but different. - Okay. - Are they also on Rottene Salad? - No. The ones we saw were just fucking on the mainland, and WA, they're down south, but there's quackas on the mainland as well. - Is it? - Yeah, they're just not as friendly and not as concentrated as they are on the on Rottene Salad. - Where are they on the mainland? - Just in WA, somewhere. - We need a petition to get them fucking, like a couple in the backyard. - Yeah, honestly. - They would be fucking sick animals to have in the backyard. Would they not? - Yeah, I love 'em. - Special edition can grow, man. (laughing) - Small. - If you hit 'em at the right angle, I got the big smile. - Yeah. - But it's funny, because it's like, "You go then, you're like, oh my god, they're so beautiful." And you see the fucking people that own the stores and stuff. It's like, "Get the fuck out! Let's kick 'em away and shit." (laughing) - Yeah, that makes me feel like, "I'm. Nah, oh." That makes me feel like when you start working in Africa, and you're like, "Oh, fuck, these poor guys, they're working so hard." And then you see some guys been working in Africa for like 10 years. Like, "Get the fuck out of the workshop! Fuck off! Stop eating my food! Who fucking took me, who took me care, code?" - And they're fucking, they're like the most racist, the most fucking, everything you've ever thought about. - They've been there too long. - Yeah, they've been there too long and like, an African will just make one small mistake. - Fuck! - And I'm sure they'll just cop it too. - Oh, yeah, yeah. It's terrible. - Yes, boss. - Oh, there's not even a yes, boss. Oh, regardless, we need to get into the first topic. So, I saw Blaine Burke post a carousel this week, and I thought we should definitely talk about that. - Oh, I have not seen this carousel. - Well, that's lucky because I just loaded it up on my phone and found you this. - No, I do. - Fuck. So while you're having a little bit of a gander there, I'm just gonna fucking blab on a bit. But Blaine, who is runner up of the King of the Hill in 2026, a bit of an absolute fucking freak when it comes to altars. It is also what I understand, a financial analyst or some sort of data analyst. - All right, so he's like a fucking freak, like the, the, the, Savant type. - Yeah, he's a freak. - Freak numbers, freak in the sheets. - Yeah. (laughing) The spread sheets. - Yeah, the spread sheets. Anyway, he's even gone on, he won the noosa, noosa is an ultra trail. 100 Ks? I reckon it's 100 Ks. Anyway, he won that this year, bit of a beast, but he posted this carousel this week, which is a bit of an attack on the backyard ultra scene. And I thought it was very interesting. And I thought we should definitely talk about it because we spoke not that long ago about the WNBA and pay structure. And where women fit into the scene of remuneration. - Remuneration. - Remuneration. - That's close enough. - Yeah, close enough. And Blaine is basically doing the exact same thing, but in the ultra, sorry, in the backyard ultra space, which I think is really important because it sort of hits something at the core of what I think carries is and what King of the Hill is. So that's why it resonated so much with me. But his is graph pretty much is backyard ultra is now around 15 years old. It's a commercialized sport now. It's not some complete underground, it is still quite underground and niche and all of those things, but it is a lot more commercialized than it once was. I mean, we just saw Sydney backyard ultra have what almost 700 people start to the start line. - Yep. - That's not a nothing of any people know what's going on. - Exactly. And in that space, we have wall championships, national team selection, prize money, live streams, all those things are within the backyard ultra space at the moment, but it still runs on the single category landscape, landscape. So there's only one world champion. There's only one world champion. There's only the top spots in all of your satellite teams. So in terms of the top 15 for Australia, there's only 15 spots. There's not 15 for seven male, seven women. There's not 10 male, five women. - It's non-gendered, but non-gendered means male. - Yeah, for this, it definitely does. And the way that it has gone on is definitely in that respect. So according to Blaine, he said that roughly 5% of all fields, sorry, I'm trying not to fuck this up for your Blaine. So because his argument is because it runs on the single category single world champion structure, that leaves women at roughly 5% of fields. And means performances like Sarah Perry, who is the would be the woman's world champion. Her 95 lap effort isn't a world record, and it's officially recorded just as a DNF like any other person. And his argument is because it's a single world champion, because it's a single world championships, because it's a single non-gendered category across the board, that isn't celebrated the way that it should be, and it's just recorded like everybody else. - Yep, absolutely. - So his idea is that there should be two fixes. One, oh, sorry. - Fuck. - Sorry, Blaine. (laughing) - So his fixes is that there should be two categories, two world championships, and even more numbers of men and women in the satellite team. - Yes. - Well, it's really hard to read off this and keep my points straight. - Yep. - But what he's saying is there should be some, what is the words he used? - Equity, not equality. And I'm gonna be honest, I don't even understand what that means. Sounds good. - It does sound good. Do you know what it means? - Yeah, so equity. (laughing) - Yeah, I'm gonna be honest. I'm gonna be honest, I don't even understand what that means. (laughing) - That fuck knows. The quality is just like evening the playing field, and he's saying not even the playing field just have two different playing fields. - Is that what it means? - I think so. - I don't know. Sorry, Blaine. (laughing) We should get him on. - Oh, right. If he was in fucking Melbourne, I'd have him on today. Where does he live? - A Brisbane. - Well, we'll fly him down. As soon as we make some money. (laughing) - As soon as you guys follow the podcast, give us five stars, we'll fly him down. - But yeah, no, I feel you. It would be sick to have him on for sure. It would be sick. You know what the worst part is? Sorry to just interrupt you, Blaine. King of the Hill is on. All these great athletes that I would love to have on the podcast, they're here, but we're busy doing King of the Hill. So we can't do any podcast. - Yeah. (laughing) - Not too much going on. - Exactly, exactly. Anyway, so this is Blaine's idea is we need to make it more fair across the board. And to be honest, I agree definitely to an extent. 'Cause exactly right, there should be more than one world champion, in my opinion. - Yeah, and we should be holding up anyone who's like, there is just a difference between men and women. We can acknowledge that. - Yeah. - So any woman that's at the top of her, the woman class is fucking incredible. - Exactly. - Top three there is top three in the world. - Exactly. And his point is that because they haven't made a second world champion, because they haven't tried to make it more shine some light on it, show. - Exactly happening. - Because you're not shining a light on it, because you're not making it more of a it's own thing, then it's stopping the field from getting developed. - And why not just looking at that graph, the first one on the carousel, it's the difference between men and women, but then there's the overtime of the, I guess it's the highest achieving, that was off the average, I think. - I think average yards, yeah, there's a split. And it's get the gap is widening between men and women. And technically that shouldn't happen. They should both be raising up you to expect. - Exactly. - So there's a gap because you're not getting held up. You're not seeing this as your sport or that there's like something to strive for here. Because if you're always gonna lose to a man, what's the fun can point? I mean, I don't think everyone would think that way, but it definitely doesn't give you something extra to reach for. If you're not being called out as the greatest woman runner of all time. - Yeah, exactly. - Exactly. - And the point that he makes is like Sarah Perry is at 95 yards. - Incredible. - That's the female world record right now. The male weld record is 119 yards and might get broken pretty soon Because legends in Belgium is on right now and they're pretty close to that already. Oh nice, which is hectic, but The gap between 95 and 119 is not that large but the The amount of people that the amount of women that are up in that top echelon. It's not a very stack field And you can see it straight away if you start looking at like Sydney for example It went to 74 yards the last woman dropped out at I want to say around 40-ish was Sari-al, Kramer shout out to her for being a legend But it's like you're that gap is obviously opening up and and men are getting further and there's not that much participation within women to also get it there according to his numbers Only 5% of women make up all of the backyard ultra performances Which is pretty small Just that's entrance like in the gate. I think he took these numbers off the World rankings that is provided by So women make up 5% of the world rankings. I believe so yeah, yeah Which is pretty fucking low. Mm-hmm, but for 5% to still be able to rock in 95. Yeah, that's insane effort Exactly, but then it makes it makes more sense that there should be more women in there But then my question when I read this is like Is it just that this is just not an event that women give a fuck about as much? Potentially, but I mean it's the chicken and the egg right because You would care more about it if there was more spotlight on it. I agree I agree but At what point is it almost like engineering Like you can you can try and push women into becoming engineers But the ultimate fact is that most women just don't want to be engineers. It's not that interested in it Yeah, the same way as like most managers not interested in nursing like it's it's predominantly a female dominated industry First predominantly male dominated industry. Well, I think that's where he's saying he's asking for equity not a quality Not saying there should be 50 50 amount of women and men in the event just saying that the outcomes For the person that comes first as a man and the person that comes first as a woman are the same That makes sense Yeah, all right because this is actually something we talk about at King of the hell all the time because Like say for the first year, right? One woman shows up We've got $10,000 to give the winner. Yeah, it does it's not fair that one woman automatically gets 5,000 and one guy has to go to 76 hours That doesn't make sense But do you think if there was a bigger Reward if there was the rule reward there right from the start that would have happened? I would have got all agree that maybe it would be different. Hmm But then it's like how much different and how much can you Put to make it different. Yeah, yeah, how much can you justify the difference in prize money between the efforts and how much How much can you try and push something in a direction that maybe it doesn't want to go? That's my question like for example Harry's Instagram I think is like fucking 70% or something man So it's like our races should Likely resemble that because that's basically our audience. Yeah If you're trying to push a 50 50 then you're trying to push away your audience and push in an audience that might not even be that Interested. Yeah, yeah for sure. I think that's right like you should you shouldn't expect to see 50 50 You should expect to see whatever there is there must be some number of percentage of Of the breakdown of men versus women that are interested in this event and if it is 70 30 Then you should expect to see exactly like you say in 70 30 and then you should be okay with that Yeah, that makes sense But then how it's like how do you even know and like what would it be but seeing I guess you'd look at the data and see if there's a massive difference in achievement or like this growing gap between men and women that's like an indicator that it's not just That it's not just lack of interest. It's the people that are interested or it's not I don't know No, it's hard to go now I did a little bit of research on Laz because I wanted to work out why he might not want to split it And for you that maybe doesn't know Lazarus Lake is the guy who's come up with all these crazy Event ideas. So he has the backyard ultra, which is his most out of it right. Yeah, it's his most famous one And that's why the world championships is at his house bigs backyard, which is the bigs as a dog's name Um, but he also has like Barclay marathons I'm sure he probably has a few more other races that I don't even know about but his whole thing is like underground ultra Ruffin it like the dude smokes starts. He's not even I don't even know if he's ever been a runner But he's definitely not a runner right now. Yep. So he's like he's all about that But he sees the single championship champion format as the whole point One undivided line last one standing no categories. That's sort of his stick So Adding a women's title would feel To him like admitting the question is different for men and women which he rejects Now I don't know if I agree with that But he spent 40 years deliberately keeping his races counter culture for example Barclay marathons has a $1.60 entry No website no sponsors. Nice. So any move that looks like commercial bolt-ons gets registered resisted on principle. Yeah, yep So him and also I guess from the community that it's he is building Yeah, I would say mostly from him because he's the one who decides but there's also An underground group of ultra marathons that Obviously feel the exact same way. Yeah, a jacked on his brand. Yeah, and of what he does and you know Like I don't know if I even liked that that much But you have to admit backyard ultra is a rata stage where We're gonna see more sponsorship coming into backyard ultra's. We're already starting to see live streams with king of the hill Nobody else's for I can pick it up yet, but they will so like real professionalism. Yeah. There is starting to bring some sort of professionalism to the sport So it's hard to deny that this is still grassroots counter culture. Yeah, and I feel like you can have Events that are grassroots counter culture that are doing their own thing But it's like where is the majority of the sport going where is the Yeah, you can have smaller events or even big events that are just fucking counter culture and doing weird things And I think that's kind of the beautiful thing about backyard ultra's is They can be all sorts of different fucking some have hills some different distances fucking Wild shit, but it's like I Dare say blames making the case that like we should go into normalize there being two different categories which makes sense like fuck me dead women want to compete and they want to be recognized for their competition What Lazarus doesn't see or like the issue I have with his argument is that Black and white there is one winner and it just means black and white. It's always gonna be a man Yeah, more or less almost guaranteed. Yeah, and I think not but not splitting it is either Turning a blind eye to there being a difference between men and women yeah or Blading blatantly like disregarding the difference. Yeah And not giving a fuck yeah exactly and I dare say he would be the kind of person that's it knows there's a difference All cares about there being a difference. Yeah, but there was another one Because he's he's famously known for saying that the Barclay Marathons could never be completed by a woman because they're not strong enough Yeah, right. It's a bit on the nose. Yeah, it's a bit on the nose, but uh when I was researching this When the first woman ever did finish it which was I think last year or the year before I can't remember yeah, absolutely beast She finished it with like seconds to spare. Mm-hmm And he was standing there at like the famous pole that they're supposed to touch to finish No reaction. Oh no like this is the most amazing thing ever No reaction. He was like you barely made it. Yeah, and his Point was that like there is no difference. Yeah like this isn't extraordinary. This is just what it is Yeah, see I like the idea of like treating everyone equally And like when I see a woman that needs help I'll give her the same help as I see a guy that needs help like when we see each other is different like the whole fucking What's it called like Like identity politics where it's like every you always got to think about someone's identity and like think about where they sit in the social structure and like Fucking think into it too much. I'm like nah, just blanket rule Think of everyone in the same way, but that fully fucking leaves out physical Ability and it's it's great to think of it that way, but in the real world that just doesn't fucking hold up. Yeah, I mean, there's no way, yeah. When you start doing shit like that, that's when you start doing shit like fucking men compete with women in like athletics and shit where it's not even fucking close. Yeah, which is like what's the point of having a different category? And it's like, well, there shouldn't be categories. And it's like, watch the guy run versus a woman or whatever. And it's like, there's the reason there should be categories. Yeah, they're not the same. Yeah. It's silly to pretend that they are the same. Yeah. Anyway, the thing that I thought was interesting about it and that I can, I could see some, um, pretty cool. Like I could maybe see a perspective a little bit. Mm-hmm. Was in terms of King of the Hill. It's running in an event where you are, you have a male dominated, um, attendance. You also have to deal with this kind of stuff. Absolutely. Obviously, like I think it's, this is what we deal with because the first year we gave away 10 grand to anybody. Then the second year we gave away 25 grand to anybody who won. There was no gender categories. But every year that we had the competition, you push back, we were getting a lot of pushback from you saw in a live stream. Yeah, from the live stream as well. And then, but, you know, when you, when you have one woman show up for the first year, it's really hard to justify anything other than one prize. Yeah, absolutely. And then when you set your prize money for the next year, you have to set it before the first event before you even know who's coming. Exactly. So then you've only got one person show up and you think in, well, fuck, we just have to, why would we, we can't possibly do it. Like the game because you'll get comments online like, oh, why didn't you do it like this? Why didn't you do it like that? Why didn't you do a prize for where it's divvied up? So then out of 100 people, she would have made what? 100 bucks. And it's like, you can cut it in. Oh, there's a thousand different ways to deal with it and like, this fuck, you need to be a fucking, you need to be a spreadsheet guy. And then you also need to be a philosopher to even think about like, how are we going to split this? Or something where it's like, all right, 20% of the people on field are female. Therefore the overall prize pool gets divvied up 20% towards the women fucking 80% the other way. Yeah. But it's all just fucking confusing. Yeah. And no matter what, we're dealing with this. No matter what you fucking do, someone's going to say fucking, Wingen saying, no, you should have done this. It should have been like that. So in that respect, I understand it. I understand where he's coming from, but we're the third year into the king of the hill. And we're at a stage where we're like, fuck, well, we have to do something. We can't do nothing. Yeah. Like, we can't go another year and give away 25 grand to just the winner because we're starting to get some female traction. We also want to promote that because we don't just have a male audience. Yeah. And we want to make it equitable for everybody. You want to see everyone out there fucking doing the absolute best. Exactly. And when you see, like Kelly Conroy, 30 hours in, just pull the pin. She could have gone way longer than 30 hours. She was, she was just crazy. She looked fucking great. You couldn't, you couldn't fucking pull anything from her. She just looked like fine the entire time. Yeah. She was unbelievable. Where I think you see that and you think, well, we need to be paying her for that achievement. Yeah. And we need to be bringing more women in to push her way further up, way further up. So then like we're three years in and we're at that level where we're like, we might not be able to drop 20 grand male, 20 grand female. I don't think that makes sense. But five grand male, five grand female and then 20 to the, to the overall winner. Obviously, that's what we've done anyway. And that makes sense to us. Yeah. Like we're three years in and we're at that stage. Backyard ultra is a 15 years in. And I would say granted maybe the first five or seven or eight years was pretty fucking underground. But you can't possibly say that they're still that underground that what we came to in three years, they can't come to as well. Well, this is the thing too. Like we're talking about Lazarus or I, he's got this idea that this is how it should be. And like he started the event, but there's got to be a whole bunch of other events who don't feel that way. And they're just doing it this way because that was the original format and then they need to get their act together. Yeah. We don't need Lazarus. We need everyone else to fucking wake up and be like, oh, yeah, right. This is a real sport. We need to start treating it like a real sport, not a fucking countercultural movement. Yeah. Absolutely. I mean, I think it can be both of those things absolutely. You can have all different events doing all different things. But the average landscape should try to be, should be pushing towards professionalism and real sport status. I kind of wish I'm the best for everyone. Yeah. I know this, this event itself is so niche and so underground that it doesn't even have sponsorship, doesn't even have fucking left, right? Good night. But I want like a live golf to come in and be like, fuck those world championships. We're making our own world championships. Who's live golf? Sorry. They're like the competitor to PGA. Oh, yeah, your professional golf association. Is it? Sure. I don't know. The big dogs and golf live golf came in and said, your game's boring. We're going to make it better and we're going to pay everyone fuck loads more than you. Yeah. And I'm a big, I'm a big lover of anyone who comes into any industry and disrupts it in that way. Yeah. It makes everyone sit up and be like, oh, hang on a second. Yeah. And to be honest, I kind of hope someone does that to Lazarus and the greater back out ultra space. I hope somebody comes in and says, we're actually going to hold the world championships. We're going to pay the top 50 people to come out to the world championships to solidify it as the big deal. Yeah. I'm like, nobody has money for that. Like, I'd call Harry. Let's go. I would love to. I think it would be sick. And if you think about it, what was it? This is actually Red Bull's play when they were younger in their business ventures. They take these niche extreme sports, put on actual events and then sponsor these athletes. So then these sports that had no coverage, no professionalism. Red Bull came in and said, mountain biking, you should be paid fuck loads. Yeah. Downhill racing. This is how it's going to be. Yeah. What's that one in Whistler? Is it gear side or something? Gear? Like nose. Fuck, nice. There's another. And there's that. Yeah. All that shit. completely nothing spores, turn them fucking into mainstream, and everyone's gonna buy our drink. Exactly, because you're going to see the guy who or the girl who is the absolute freak at that sport. What are they drinking? What's that hat? What's their home? Who's spawned from the team? You know what? Actually saw this video the other day of this chick. She was taking her motorbike, she rode bike off the back of a car with just a stand and she was on the motorbike as she was going back. And I was watching it and I was thinking, oh, she's gonna fucking eat shit here. Anyway, her exhaust gets stuck as she's going down. She turns the bike on, rides up. Here's another go, drops down. And as soon as she gets down, she starts doing donuts, wheelies, fucking all this sort of shit. And she was wearing a red bull helmet that I didn't spot at first. You should have seen that. Yeah, and I went to the comments and straight away. It was everyone's like, I'm sorry for my misogynistic thoughts. Absolutely. Yeah. Because I'm sure everyone was like, she's a spedig. She's gonna drop this motorbike, then boom, wheelies, fucking stuffies. She fucking catfished her on the front. 100%. Did not see the red bull helmet. But it's easily like, you see the red bull helmet, you think, oh, this person is a freak. Yeah. Anyway, I don't know how we got off track on that. But what I'm saying is I get it from Lazar's stand. If this was maybe fucking five or 10 years ago, I don't get it now. And then from that, like, what would actually happen if they just said we're gonna have two world championships? Be fine. Nothing would happen. Exactly. And it would be no extra cost, be no extra effort. And if anything, it would be more publicity, more interest, more of everything. If you can be a new sport and fucking have this shit sorted out from the start, you don't have the issues of legacy sports. Exactly. You can just do things however you want. Exactly. Anyway, it is what it is. But I'm glad we're talking about it. I'm glad Blaine's fucking his platform to fucking bring this to our attention. And we're talking about it now. Well, it's good. It's also the second time he's brought it up. He bought this up a couple of years ago. I think when he did his first back at ultra, and he said, oh, why don't we have a fucking two categories here? Yeah, it made sense back then. Yeah. And it still makes sense now. Yeah. Like why wouldn't you? Anyway, how they get you? How they get you? I've got a fucking great one for this. Yeah. But the next episode. Oh, great. I'm gonna save it because I fucking, I'm gonna save it. You go though. This is a new segment. Okay. We don't have a sting yet for it, but we're gonna make one. So I was thinking stingy or smart, but I realized I was just trying to use stingy or smart for how they get you. How they get you, I don't buy expensive tools, despite being the kind of person that uses their tools 24/7 for my job on my days off. I don't buy expensive tools because I lose the cuts. Firstly, can you explain the segment and then go on? I thought it was obvious how they get you. How the big corporations get you. This is exactly like the printer companies, how they get you selling your cheap ass printers with fucking expensive as fuck proprietary ink. This is exactly the same as my fucking dish sponge issue. That should have been a how they get you, but it was stingier or smart because I didn't have how they get you. Now we have how they get you. I love it. This is how the big tool companies get you. Big tools, eh? Big tool. Big tool, they're fucking, they see me coming from a mall away. They're like that guy that loses his tools. What he wants, one spinner, one socket. He already has a full set. He just wants one crank the price up. Crank the fucking price up on that guy. 10 mil socket. That'll be about $4,000. Exactly. This was exactly my issue. I needed two sockets. I lost the 13. I lost the 17. Two of my most used sockets. I go to the fucking Sydney tools, call on them out. I look for the cheapest fucking sockets. I always look for the cheapest shit because I'm just going to lose the gun anyway. I walk in that cheaper socket, $10.39, a single socket. And I was like, pretty normal for a socket. You're never going to get a single socket cheaper than 10.39. I picked two of that's $2.60, $2.80, more round up. Sorry. $28, $20, and $0.80. Okay, thanks for getting that. Rounding up. That's a quick match. I turn around. There's a 10 piece socket set with ratchet and extension, $39. The exact same socket, same brand, same everything. Really? Yeah. And they wanted 20 just for two sockets. 20 for two sockets. So if you, let's talk about just the sockets, fuck the ratchet and the extension, which obviously cost money as well, but 10 sockets at $10.39, that's $10.90. That's $103.90 is what that socket set should have cost. Yeah. For just the sockets, they sell on it for $29. Are you fucking serious, Gun? Those sockets should be $2.9 each. Yeah. So you should be, you should be saving like $17.00 on your purchase. Absolutely. That's a five finger discount. It's a fuck I should. Honestly, that's the fucking bullshit. Yeah. What gets me to like, so what did I do? I'm fucking smart. I bought the whole set. I took my two sockets out of it, but there's like five sizes of sockets in there that aren't my common use ones that I'm not going to lose in the next fucking next five years wasted. Why, why am I wasting these resources? I didn't need a ratchet. All right. The extension's nice. But now I'm going to lose my fucking 13 and 17 again. I'm going to have to buy a whole other set again. And I'm going to have a fucking draw stacked full of 19s and 9s of sockets. Why? Why am I wasting the world's precious resources for nothing? Because these cons want to jack up the price of single sockets. So if I want to do the right thing by the planet, you should spend $20.00. I should fucking triple the price that the socket should be. That's bullshit. That's how they get you. That is how they get you. That's some fucking bullshit out there. You know, the only company that doesn't do this, that each single thing will cost the same amount as the entire set. S-E-A. Snap on. And it's because, and it's because snap on's a pack of cans that jack the price way fucking up higher than it should be anyway and sell everything at maximum price. Yeah, that's so funny. Anyone who doesn't know Snap on there, probably the most expensive tools ever. Yeah, great quality. Good stuff. But what's the point of spending fucking 10x the next tool down if you're going to lose it? Well, the idea is you don't lose it. Yeah, that's that ain't me. That ain't me, son. Yeah, but Snap on is the kind of brand that you would have in your workshop, like in your garage, not the kind of thing you have in your tool bag gone underground. It's true. You'd see it though, like a light vehicle mechanics because the fucking rape fan, the Snap on truck, pulls up at your shop and they let you tick stuff up and you pay it off over time. Yeah. They all have fucking full Snap on sets and I'm like, bro, you have not been making that kind of money. No. You should not be wasting your money on that shit. Not on that shit. No, that's how they get you is the type of the type of segment where I think just steal it. Fuck them. Just steal it. Just fuck them. I was working on a machine two days ago and I dropped my 17 spanner and it fell down in underneath this transmission and I immediately went, I'm not even going to go under there. I guess I did. I rolled under there. I had a look. I didn't see it and I'm like, I'm just going to buy a new one because the amount of fuck around to even try and get that back. And I'm just going to have to buy a whole new fucking spanner roll. No, the whole plant can be down for fucking 15 minutes, 25, 30 minutes, will you pull covers off? No, covers were off. This is like pulling transmission pumps out. Oh, I didn't know where when I had my fucking. I had my mirror out, like, trying to see around corners. It was gone, boy. - Oh, no son. - But that's how they get you two companies, fucking your own blast son. - But I got a good one just for us a little, what do you call it, foreshadowing? - Yeah. - No, is that what you call it? - Yeah. Mine is on training companies. - Mine is on training companies. - Oh, companies that come in to give you your fucking accreditation. - No, no, no, no, no, no. You got nowhere to your mate. - All right. - I've had a massive win this week. And I'm ready to share next week. - They were gonna get you. - They were gonna fucking get me. - You put your foot down. - I fucking got 'em. Anyway, anyway, I'll let you guys fucking sit around that for a week. That was a good one. We've got some more male female dynamic chat going on. Here we go. - All right, so we haven't had fucking barely used a single thing today, but FTK, not long ago, got into a bit of trouble. If you don't know who they are, they are for the kudos. If you can imagine that's a running podcast, I have never fucking listened to that podcast. But, I know this. - Yes, they've been in a bit of trouble this week. For some things that they said, speaking about women in sport and I'm just gonna play the clip and see what you reckon. They did a 10k recently. And I think Liam ran about, this might have been three weeks ago. Liam ran, was a 28-20 something in Tim, maybe 28-50. Liam had a girl behind him for the first 5k. And I just said, mate, that would be such a weird experience. You're on track. You're on track for a PB, you know you're going well. But, there's a girl right next to you at halfway. You just reevaluating everything. You're like, I'm on for a career day today, but I'm like, am I gonna get chicked? Like, he's not the type of guy who should, that shouldn't even be going in your head. You just be, you be shook. You just be going through all your life's choices. Like, how did I end up here? Like, why didn't I study harder or something like that? You don't think that there's a woman out there that's better than you at pretty much everything? Now, I agree with you. Do you want some more context? Go on. These guys are like professional runners. Oh. That changes everything. Exactly. What I didn't, I'm just talking shit. What do you mean? Do you know how fast a 28-minute 10k is? That sounds fast. But how fast can you do a 10k? Oh, like, fucking 60 minutes? 20. Now, you could get like, I just get it in 45. Okay. Did you? Yeah. I got pretty fast. I'm pretty impressed with that. Anyway, these guys are basically professional runners on like elite runners. So when I first heard this, I was like, oh, brah. I don't know if you can say shit like that. Looks bad. Yeah, it looks pretty bad. But I didn't know the context because I've never fucking listened to this podcast ever. And at first, I was like, oh, no, you can't be saying shit like that because, bro, this is running or it's a sport where, we're not even just, I thought about it from my perspective. I get fucking demolished by every woman ever 'cause I'm a fucking shit runner. - Yeah. - So if there's something like that came out of my mouth, that would be a- wild because to think that a woman couldn't beat me is crazy. A woman can fucking wipe the floor of me. Most of them probably. Like not even that good. But when I realized that these guys are pro runners, I was like, oh, to me, that changes it completely. Really? Yeah, completely. And I was reading what the two sort of camps were of what people think about this. So on one side, there's at his level, getting beaten by a woman is a competitive embarrassment because pro fields are gender segregated. And the time gap at the top is genuinely pretty large. Secondly, some argue critics are taking offense at honest banter and ignoring the context. That's fair enough. I can see that. But then the other side is, I don't know if you heard what he said there, what he said, getting chicked. Yeah, by a girl. Yeah, I'd never heard anyone say getting chicked before. I thought when I first heard, I thought he said getting chipped. Oh, yeah. Yeah, like fucking chipping the old block, you know. But then I saw people arguing about this saying, I said, get chicked. I didn't realize that's a common term getting chicked. Really? Apparently there's also apparently there's a podcast called getting chicked or some shit like that. And it's these vast women. What a beast. Yeah. So I don't know. Apparently the getting chicked framing, even when self deprecating props up the assumption that women are the inferior baseline that men measure themselves against. Yeah, that's my initial reaction. Yeah, that was my initial reaction as well. But when you, I think when you come at it from from like a professional standpoint, it makes more sense to me. Yeah, for sure. So I could see why someone who was in the someone like them being such elite runners, that would make sense to them. But I think it's just tone deaf as fuck. Bro, what world are you living in? Yeah, I think it is as well. But then I wonder, is this and this is where I think it might have blown up from is somebody who listened to their podcast took offense and the majority wouldn't have given a fuck. But then because one person gave a fuck, then people like me who have never ever ever listened to their podcast and would not even be interested in their podcast. Did you hear the audio quality? Even then read what they said and hear what they said and be like, oh, that's fucking not on. Oh, yeah, typical outrage machines. Yeah. And then not understand one, the context, what the podcast is exactly exactly because then I saw like he's a people getting upset. Obviously women like, this is degrading to women, blah, blah, blah. And I think just out on by itself probably is pretty degrading to a woman. But if when I thought about this as like from a professional standpoint, I tried to think about how this would reflect on me. If I was playing softball, which is like a sport that I've played at the highest level, if I got struck out by a woman, I would expect to get teased by my teammates. And I wouldn't, I would be disappointed in myself by getting struck out. Not because women aren't good, but because the levels between a good woman and a good man in the sport are like pretty far apart. I'm hearing you, but it's all in the wording. It's like, the woman is the inferior thing. Therefore, it's embarrassing to be beaten by the inferior thing and you're calling the inferior thing being checked. Like that's just like that whole just the fucking feeling of that. Does that not feel gross? Even if you're fucking so elite that you're firing fucking way above where any woman could ever be just that fucking thought process is yuck to me. I agree to an extent, but I think if it was in a woman like, because straight away I was like, oh, yeah, I mean, it might sound bad if I said shit like that on a podcast. I was struck out by girl today. Fucking embarrassing. You're checked. Maybe if there wasn't a fucking tone for it, it probably wouldn't be as bad. But I was thinking, oh, but say like sub the woman out, say I got struck out in a game of softful wire. I don't know, and under 15's boy or under 17's or an under someone that I should never get struck out by. Again, would be the same amount of embarrassment, but they might not be a word associated with it, like getting checked, which wouldn't make it. I don't think it wouldn't sting as much, but it would be on the same power as like, oh, like I would expect to be that would still be just as embarrassing. Yeah. Who were they talking about? I'm pretty sure they were talking about one of the greatest female runners of all time. This is what I was was coming up on the back of them or was with them at the five for the first five days for my understanding. I get what you're saying. Like if it wasn't a gendered thing, it would feel a lot more normal to be like, how you got fucking wrecked by some young count like the 15 year old beature. But it just feels wrong. It just feels wrong because it's not a woman. It is because there's a history. Yeah, yeah, no, I agree. And we live in a culture where this history has been overbearing for a very long time, that you even touch shit like that. What I don't get though, I feel like there shouldn't be extreme outrage over this. Just be like, this is some guy, talking on a podcast that's for can take an out of context, shooting the shit for can have an alarm. Generally, I would be like, man, I shouldn't be having a laugh like that. Like it's tone deaf and like, bro, there's I do not have like women listeners who would take offense to that and be like, the fuck, it's kind of an asshole thing to say, regardless. Even on the 15 year old case, like there's a 15 year old up your ass at the halfway mark. Yet my initial thought is like, fuck, that 15 year old is fucking kickin' ass. Yeah, but it's I'm gonna have to keep in front of it. It's two sides at the same coin. That 15 year old's kickin' ass. What the fuck am I doing? You can look at it both. It's like glass half full, glass half handy, you know? You can look at it both ways. I don't know. But do you, it's so hard for me to put myself in that position because I'm a shit runner. And like maybe I've thought this, I feel like I had this thought one time when I was a young auto-electrician, I was thinking like, fuck, female auto-electrician, like there couldn't possibly be one better than me. And I thought like that because I was 18 years old. And it's like there will always be someone better. There's fucking two, how many billion people on this planet? It's true. But if you are at the pinnacle, yeah, then it's just like you shouldn't be the kind of person puttin' down, fucking other people who look up to you, bro. Yeah, but he's not speaking too hurt, you know what I mean? Yeah, but you put that out in the world. Yeah, I know, you're saying. You're fucking show. I know, but like I reckon people could take us out of context on this podcast. Absolutely. I'm waiting for the day we get canceled. Oh, right. It's coming. I'm sure of it. Has he had it as he made an apology? No, this is the take notes. This is the best part. Well, I don't know if it's the best part for them is because it's blown up so much. These guys have gone like on a big apology like, well, we're so sorry. I'm sorry that I didn't say something about Troy saying blah, blah, blah. So then all the other people like, oh, you're fucking pussy. Sold out. Yeah. What is this bullshit? No, back bone. Yeah, exactly. So I don't know if you're in it, I don't think you should ever apologize. I'm joking. Not that, but I think you shouldn't go like, oh my god, I'm so far. You'd be like, oh, yeah, fucked up, but I was shooting the shit like you should probably understand the context. Yeah, yeah, exactly. The apology shouldn't fucking be licking us. It should be, look, I shouldn't have said the things I said I was in a joky mood blah, blah, blah. And actually now that you've brought it up, like I can see how that sounds fucked up. And I shouldn't really be joking about shooting like that. Yeah. But I'm also going to go study my arse off now and never get checked again. Kitten checked all bastard. Yeah, it's an interesting one. I haven't heard that, but I'm going to fucking use that for now on. Don't, please don't. I don't like anything that's like gender based or like put down based based on someone else's anything. Yeah, but everything put down based is based on something else. Yeah, it's true. You're a fucking idiot, mate. Yeah. What about the idiots? It's true. Yeah. What about them? But that's like not a particular group of people. No one considers themselves idiots. But they're out there. It's not their fault that they don't know that they're idiots. Yeah, but it's like you're born into your gender. If someone's like saying gender based things, that's saying something about you regardless. Regardless if it has any meaning to you or fucking. Yeah, but I mean, what if people like you can make fun of people with a very short and shit? Yeah, absolutely. But even then, I'm like, all right, but that's like I'll do it to someone's face that I know. I'm friends with and it's like you pick when to choose your jokes. Yeah, that's true. That's true. You don't fucking just be like, yeah, these fucking short counts out there. Yeah, that's true. That is good point. Yeah, that is good point. When I do say things that are faking a bit on the nose like about operators and stuff, like I cop some flack for that. It comes back to me and I reevaluate and I'm like, all right, I was being a bit harsh. Yeah, not all operators are fucking dumb counts. But most of them. And I think they'll agree with me. Yeah, not all dumb counts are operators, but all operators are dumb counts. All right, last one. We've got to, oh, actually, we've got to think for this one. Hit me. My list today, your list today. This is one that's not going to be controversial and we won't get taken out of context for. I hope. From this episode. This came up, I just, it wholesome moments wholesome moments with your parents. And this came up because I work with this guy who's like, he's one of my bosses actually. And he's just like dead set fucking family man. You can tell he just loves the shit out of his kids. Whenever he's telling stories, he's always thrown in stories of his kids or where he took his kids and like, fucking the holidays they go on and all the caravan and stuff. And it's just, he's a fucking wholesome dad and that made me feel fucking gooey. He was telling me a story about morn lawns and I'm pretty sure he was flexing on me about his fucking lawnmower as well. He's got some big property. So he's got a fucking basically a tractor with fucking full downside choppy boys. It's fucking enclosed cab with air conditioner like we're talking. That is, that's not a fucking lawnmower. No, he reckons he's got three lawnmowers and this is like the one. Yeah, I'm telling you, he's flexing on me. I got to push my fucking piece of shit under around the yard. Yeah, you don't even have one that drives itself embarrassing. That's what I really wanted. Anyways, and he was just saying how like he'll go out and mow lawn and he'll just pick up his three kids and launch him in there with him. So they'll just be sitting on the floor while he's like just mowing away and I'm like, fuck, just that's just some wholesome dad shit, some wholesome kid shit because it brought, I told him the story that it brought up for me is when I was young, dad used to put fucking earmuffs on us and sit me on top of the lawnmower, just the old fucking push lawnmower started up and you'd be sitting there terrified. I'm pretty sure he gave us gloves too, so he didn't bone our hands on the exhaust and just push us around the yard and fucking mow the lawn. That's hilarious. Yeah, that's like a wholesome memory from my childhood with dad. I don't think I've ever seen one dad mow the lawn ever. I don't think in my lifetime, I don't think I've ever seen it. I swear to God, I don't think I've ever seen it. Where did the lawn go? We never really had a fucking lawn, bro. Yeah, this was out the back. It was various times. There's motorbikes all over the lawn now. Yeah. Half-finished projects. You know what's funny, when you said, oh, we need to do, you said cool memories with parents. Now I don't have a lot of fucking, I don't know if dad doesn't love me or whatever the fuck it is. The warm fuzzy memories. I don't have many warm fuzzy memories. If any at all, if I'm totally honest. So I have some other memories. I've just called memories that I'll remember for the rest of my life. So you're not even doing fuzzy memories. You just go on call memories. Bro, straight up, I don't think I have a single fuzzy memory, honestly, of our childhood. Look, I know it was bad at times, but, and definitely the things that I remember most are the traumatic events. No, I would say the fuzziest one is the one that I'll say first. So this is like a call memory for me as a child. We lived on like a quarter acre block. Not like it wasn't really bush, but we had motorbikes and fucking shit everywhere. We had a bit of a chaotic household. But the one thing that we had was any time it started raining, we had toads, bro. We had so many fucking toads in our house. Not bro, North West Queensland. Bro, not so not in our house, but in our yard, it was fucking off its head. It was off its fucking head. And as kids, we used to get paid $1 for every toad that we shot a fucking slug into and we put it into the fucking the bag that we'd be carrying with us. Yep, we'd carry around a big black plastic bin bag and we'd be cruising around with the air rifle with no scope on it. Just fucking popping these dogs. Yeah, it was fucking such a great memory for me. I didn't get to do a lot of shooting. I had the tongs fucking putting the toes in the bag. That was my job mostly, but that is like a call memory for me because we'd have head torches. We'd be out there. Be me, you dad, fucking whoever. Literally out on the hunt in the rain too. Yeah, it would be pissing down rain. We'd have the, I don't know why we never did it at daytime, but yeah, we get the lights out. We're fucking popping all these toes. Good times. And they used to eat all the dog food, man, so they'd be fucking huge. Oh boy. There's some fucking like size of your head cane to it. Oh, bro. You know what? After doing shit like that and then later on seeing an America where they got kids with two twos and shit on their cane toads like pets. No. What the fuck? That is disgusting. I just remember being terrified of the count saying. Oh, yeah, that would be nasty. They're gross, bro. Like green free frog. Beautiful, iconic, like would wet your hands, pick them up, pat them like dope cane toad. Yeah, that was that's honestly one of my, one of my core memories from our childhood. It's like fucking poppin cane toads. Good times. My next one. Yes. This one was with mum and it's just like, I don't even, I feel like I got a lot more with dad than I got with mum, but fuck. There was one time we were driving around and we needed to go to someone's house and or we had some address to go to and mum's like, oh, look it up in the ref adex and direct me to how to get there. This is like fucking in the way before times when you had to have like if you just got given an address and you didn't know where it was, you had to open a book up. The book that you kept in your car and look it up and figure out what page it's on and then like direct your way on a map, but like you didn't get a dropped pin of where you are that updated with time. So I remember those days. Oh, fucking well. That was some good day. Remember like you'd be driving somewhere across Brisbane and be low where the fuck are we going? Oh, yeah. Like go to page 45. We're going off the page where we go. Wrong turn. Then you're like, fucked because like your three, you got three fucking ideas ahead of where you go on and then once you make a wrong turn, it's like, oh, everything changes. Anyway, anyways, mom's like direct me there and I was like direct to her and I was like, you have left on this street and right on this street. And like I thought she didn't know where we were going, but as I fucking directed us there and like we got to that place, I was like, oh, mom, 100% knew where we were going. She was just like giving me a fun activity and going through the book. And I just remember that and I was like, oh, fuck, that's so sweet. It's like mom doing mom things. Yeah. Yeah, mom was pretty great. Yeah. It's just to stimulate them. Yeah, absolutely. Um, yeah, I'm going to be honest. So none of mine are warm and fuzzy after this point. Oh, if you want to draw, I've got fucking heat. I was so shocked. Shoot them off the dome. Nah, none of them can be shared on a podcast. No, totally. That'll get arrested. No, 100%. No, I have one though. This is probably another call memory I have. So for context, our dad, he will fucking go to war for you. Like you make one hint of noise in the household. You're dead, but you fucking beat up some kid at school, get beaten up by some kid at school. Whatever it is, that man will fucking go to war and no matter how fucking wrong you were, that doesn't matter. That's not matter. When you get walked into that principal's office and you see dad there, you're like dad, my boy. Yeah. He would, there was not at first. You'd be like, fuck him in trouble here. And then you'd see him just start firing up at the principal, the teacher or whoever, like how dare you talk about my child that way. Yeah, it's crazy. I don't even know how that happens. I'd be like, fucking your dancer. Yeah. And as if he didn't know, he would have, surely. I love it. Anyway. Just one time I fucking crashed my girlfriend's parents car and I fucking, shh, near on fucking writ the cunoff. What were you doing? Skids. That's not the story I told anyone. But yeah, I was doing fucking skids. I didn't have a license yet. My partner at the time had a, had a piece and I fucking, oh, can't. I only give us a, give us a fucking go. They're fucking not very old. Nissen Navara. Oh, the good you was, we were taking it out. A bunch of fucking pea playters taking it out behind the cemetery to do fucking donuts. Oh, that's a great donut spot. Great donut spot. Unfortunately, I didn't make it because as I was driving the out thought, you know what, on this straight road with walls either side, I'm going to fucking clutch kick this. So I fucking clutch kick it so I can give her a bit, a bit of fucking. And I fucking clutch kicked it. She fucking let go. Back end with sideways. I put my foot back on the clutch. Shit, my pants still had my foot on the accelerator. Let go of the clutch and still have my foot on the accelerator. Because I was just shitin' it when straight into this big fucking concrete ballad. Fuck. Fucking radiator coolant everywhere. Uh, bonnets all fucking dented up. Fronts all fucked and we didn't just hit it. We went over it. So it fucked up all the bottom. Fuck the rear bumper. Absolute fucking shit myself. No shit. We went back, parked it up. [Laughs] Fucked it up at a parent's house. Told them what happened. I was in big trouble, obviously. I had done fucked up something serious. Anyway, I went home that night. The next day I went to the backyard, dad's working on some fucking shit. And I go off to him and I'm thinking, "I'm gonna have to tell him. I'm gonna have to tell him. I just crashed his car." This is the only time in my life under the age of fucking 25. I had any savings to my name. So I was saving for ages. I don't know why. Good on me. I probably had about eight grand. Fuck me, dude. Yeah, I had a fair bit. I definitely had, I was up there. I was like, "Well, all that money's gone." Because they're gonna have to take it to the records maybe or whatever's gonna happen. I go to the backyard and I go to dad. And I'm pussy- I'm pussy- - For- - No. - And dad, the scariest person in our lives. Yeah, literally the scariest kind of ever, man. I'm, I'm, what, 16? So, I'm, I'm, dad, I've just got something to tell you. Oh, what is it? And he's still working away. And I'm like, "Oh, damn, like I just need- I just need to- (laughs) - See you're enough. - Yeah, and he's looking at me. He's like, "What the fuck is going on?" He stops his shit and he's looking at me. He's like, "Have you fucking knocked her up, have you?" (laughs) And he's looking at me. He's like, "Have you knocked her up?" And I've thought, "Oh, I've crashed her parents car." And he's like, "Oh, is that it?" (laughs) I could not believe it. He was just about to go fucking ape shit. And he's like, "Oh, I crashed her car." Oh, no drama. Oh, good. It's so funny, our old man, you can do the worst thing in the world or like the dumbest thing ever. He's like, "Oh, oh, good." You fucking make some noise while he's on night shift. - Get over, bro. - Get over, bro. - Get over what though. Because he can see himself in that, in crashing the car. - Oh, guaranteed. - Guarantee, guaranteed. - He was a little scared. - That's what I was talking about. Especially with cars and bikes and stuff. And actually, it's fucking crazy that you say that story. Because I have an extremely similar story where I was, my mate had an old wagon, Mazda 929. Rear wheel drive manual would have made a great bush drift car, which is what we used to do as young mechanics. And we're at TAFE. And he was like, "Fuck, do you want to buy this car off?" We'll load all the boys up. We'll head out to Duchess Road. And we'll just fucking do some drifting on the dirt road. And we're like, "Fuck, yeah." So load it a dump. Pull the five people in the car, cruise out there, get onto the dirt road. And he's like, "Do you want to drive him like, "Yeah, boy." You're like, "Yeah, I'm ready to go." - The gentle license? - You would have. - Yeah, I had my license. I was like, "Yeah, sick. Just fucking speed up. Coming into the first corner, clutch kicker, sideways, straight into a tree. (laughing) Straight into the tree. You like bent the car in half. Fucking, all the doors were fucked up. The B-pillars fucked up. Couldn't open the doors. Everyone's fucked because they all just headbutted each other and busted into the windscreen and that. I absolutely shit myself. We all shit ourselves. We got rocks and screwdrivers and bashed off the bin plate of the car. (laughing) We called up our mate who was still at TAFE to come pick us up. Because we had a full car. There wasn't enough room in the car. So I had to lie in the boot. And I was like, "No, it's all right. I deserve this. I feel like an absolute piece of shit." (laughing) "Oh, mate's like taking it extremely well." Because he's like, "Souls." (laughing) So I had to buy the car off him, but the same deal. I had to go help. (laughing) Came to Dad that afternoon, straight after TAFE, went there and I was like, "Oh, Dad, I'd have something to tell you." And he's like, "What is it?" (laughing) And I was like, "Oh, we were out fucking around "bush with my mate's car and wrote it off into a tree." And he's like, "Oh, okay." You told your mother? (laughing) "Oh, nah." And he's like, "All right." Okay. I'm like, "All words." (laughing) What did you do then, bud? Did you have to go fucking pull it out? Honestly, I'm pretty sure someone burnt it out there. Yeah, that would be the way to go. Pretty typical. Yeah. Pretty typical. I mean, we had that one time, that guy burnt that car right outside our house, almost fucking burnt our house. That really, I don't remember that. Yeah. It happens though. We had a big spare lotment beside our house. Yeah. Yeah, you know, funny thing, I actually told him to burn it. (laughing) Bullshit. Who was it? Who's this guy? I knew from school. He was a bit of a fuck with it. But he was there. And he was like, "Yeah, I'm gonna throw a match in this fucking blah blah blah." Because someone had just tipped a car beside our fucking house. So it was like a wreck anyway. Yeah, it was a wreck. Yeah, fucking burn it. Why not? Burn it. Next thing, all the grass beside the house is burning. Far back there. Yeah. Cops rolling up, dads. What the fuck? I told these cops they should have gone through this car. Oh, yeah. Oh, I don't even know what happened. He just fucking, he just come and burn it. (laughing) Oh, fuck. Oh, yeah, remember that. Fuck, cars go up though. Yeah. When you burn a car, fuck me, they go up. Yeah, the seats apparently, real good. Yeah. I'm like, "I'm gonna walk at the foam and then, go on." Yeah. Fuck, bush cars. I love bush cars. Yeah. Anyway, so that's, you're saying poor memory. Good times. Yeah, I don't have any of these lovely, dubbyshit that you're talking about. I got another one. In grade seven, I was sports captain from McKillip. Shout out to St. Joseph's fucking Catholic College. My yellow boys. Yeah. And I made, what did I just say? I made fucking sports captain. And did my little speech thing and fucking did the thing and I wanted it. I was like, "Oh yeah, sick, fucking dope." And when I got home, the school pre-called Mum and Dad to tell him I got it. And they like, "Mum made me my favorite dinner." And Mum and Dad both came in there like, "Oh, we're so proud of you." You did, you fucking got the thing and like bought me a bunch of chocolates and fucking some other shit. And I just remember being like, "Well, I didn't even know they cared." Like, "Is this even a big deal?" And then they just like grained beauty and soul loving on me and was like, "Fuck, that's amazing. I did good." That's crazy. Yeah. We had such different childhoods. Well, I don't think they were expecting it from me. Not quite the sportiest in the family one might say. Nah, gee. I feel that. That's pretty sick though. That is a nice one. Yeah. Real, real good memes. Um, I remember this other time. Our whole family. So when we were younger, obviously, our whole family used to fucking drive everywhere on vacation. We didn't fucking fly, man. And man eyes that a Brisbane is like what, 22 hours or something? Easy. It's fucking shit. Man eyes that are towns for what, another 10 hours. That's eight hours easy. Yeah, eight hours when you buy yourself, when you got a family, you're stopping. 10 hours easy. Three kids in the back. Oh. Fuck, actually, this is just brought up some memories now of just us driving. But we used to have this Toyota Land Cruiser. Yeah. We used to have the Xbox in the back. Old 60 series wagon. Yeah. 60 series wagon. And we used to have a TV that was no shit, probably half the size of my phone screen. Nah. It was probably, it's probably, it's your phone screen, times two, but square. It wasn't like 16 by nine resolution. It was fucking full by three. Yeah, it was four by three. It was probably, it was probably almost double an iPhone 16. Yep. Pretty much exactly the max ones. Yeah. And now we're not talking flat screen. We're talking old fucking cathode bro, tune, fucking like shit, like a massive box. It was. And you couldn't see fuck all dad built a fucking custom steel mount and mounted it in the car. So we could have the TV mounted there. And we had the Xbox and when we hit bumps, the fucking the inverter would pop out of the cigarette light. And we'd fucking have to start the game again. Yeah. What a fucking G up though. You like, you put an inverter in the car, mounted a fucking massive TV and we ran our Xbox in there. Just so we could play games while we're driving on a fucking 12 hour journey. Exactly. And we would be, we would be playing split screen Halo. Split screen Halo on something that is less than the fucking size of your phone. Oh, and the resolution way lower. No, it would have been like maybe 480 max. It was, it was fuck all pixels to remember it. Yeah. I remember the worst part about doing split screen Halo was that everything would resolution down for the screen. Except for your map. So your map would actually take off a quarter of your side of the split screen. So like, oh, what a fuck around. What a fuck. That was so. That was so. sick. It was fucking since way before mobile phones or fucking like the Xbox was only new back then. Oh, it was, it was, that was our fucking lot. That was my whole childhood. Yeah. So I take away, that's probably a warm fuzzy, but that was, uh, um, what was I saying? Oh, yes. I remember a time when we drove down to Townsville, uh, Brisbane, and our whole family got sick on the way back. I remember the whole family was in the car. Absolutely fucked. Like everyone's sick, everyone's just crying and winging and aching, everyone except for our dad. He was laughing and carrying on and having a good time, given a shit. He was like, oh, you want some, you want some fruit loops? And he was, I remember this for some weird reason, he gave me fruit loops with warm milk. Like, like he'd heated up the milk. And I'd eaten it. I just remember thinking this is disgusting. And I just remember that car ride home because he was intentionally being a contours, like given a shit, eating chicken rolls and, oh, you want some? You want some? You're like, I remember that. You can't do anything. And he's just having the fucking grand assault. So I was whole family is crook as a dog in the car. And he's just driving us all the way home. Fuck, doing what he does best. Just driving. Yeah, driving and giving a shit. Yeah. I've just never forget that. That's a cool memory. That journey. That's funny. I forgot all about that. I think it was in, um, what was that red fucking, um, VP comedy? Yeah. I reckon it was in that. And we had like, because the whole back was full of fucking pillows and, and bags and shit. Typical L family, the car's just fucking maxed out. Yeah. There's not a single fucking loan tree pillows in there. Oh, yeah, exactly. Exactly. What else you got? That's all I had. That's all you had. I have one more going because I didn't want to leave my mouth. I don't really have a lot of core memories with mom. I don't feel, but there was just one time. I think she wrote a pushback to work or some shit like that. And then her car was at work. I don't know how the situation happened. But regardless, she had a pushback at home at at work and she came home in her car. For some reason, when she was coming home in her car, she didn't want to hold the helmet for the pushback. So she just put it on. Yeah, I don't know why. So then she came home from work driving her car with a pushback helmet on. And I've literally never forgotten it. I always thought it was the funniest thing I've ever seen in my fucking life. Fuck how old were you there? I don't know. But that's going to be a deep memory. She's rocking out of the car with a pushback helmet. She didn't take it off. She's walks straight into the house with a pushback helmet on. Fuck, that would have sent you for a spin as a kid. I must have been out the front riding around on a pushback or a scooter or some shit. And she came home and I was like, it was like, it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen in my entire life. That's good. I've actually got another one. Oh, go on. Remember that time that dad made us swords and shields? We really got into, we were watching, we definitely had like a real medieval streak at some stage where we were watching like, it would have to be some age of empire type shit. Yeah, definitely some age of empire shit. And what's that movie? It's like one of my favorite movies, Heath Ledger. It's about jousting. Oh, yes. I know the one you're talking about. Yeah. 100% I know it. Yeah. And I feel like after watching that, we were just like, jousting. We were jousting on our scooters. Our scooters would run at each other and we had a sugar cane plant. Yes. And you could pull like a bit of the leaf off the sugar cane and it made like a jousting pole like a little mini one. So we just ride our scooters, our scooters, push scooters at each other and fucking to smash each other with these little fucking leaf things. And like when they broke, they splintered and broke off. It looked sick. It was like jousting. Yes, I remember that. But what I remember also is when you hold, when you held those and you jousted each other, the sugar cane leaf or whatever, it's got spikes. Oh, it's all over. It's like fiberglass. Yes, just like fiberglass. So then when you jousting the other person, that puts all these fibers deep into your hand. And then you spend all day like scratching your hand. We would have fucked ourselves up on those scooters too. Absolutely. Oh, completely. But I remember one time, Dad made us these wooden shields and these fucking wooden swords and we just beat the shit out of each other in the front yard. Like, it was fucking epic. I don't remember. I don't remember most of that shit. But now we need to have more. I mean, you would have been heaps younger than. Oh, fucking heaps younger bro. I mean, five four or five years younger than me plus fucking. I barely remember this shit. Yeah, try six. Come. Yeah, six. Yeah. Fuck me. Six to you. Nine to me. Oh, yeah. I thought it was three and five. It's three and six for me. Yeah, it must be. Yeah, hectic, hectic. Anyway, let's leave it there. Catches. Let us know your fucking core memories with your parents. Good end, bad. Or trauma. Have you ever told your father that you crashed your girlfriend's car? Your friend's parents. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that was not that cost me $10,000. 10 grand. 10 grand. No, it was 10 grand non-facash. You almost had enough. Yeah, I almost had to I'd do pay my back for a little while. That was depressing. No. Anyway, see you guys next week.

Podcast Summary

Key Points:

  1. The speakers compare trail running in the bush versus city running, noting the beauty of nature versus urban pollution and garbage.
  2. They discuss kangaroos as both majestic wildlife and pests, highlighting cultural differences in attitudes toward them (e.g., sanctuaries vs. shooting for meat).
  3. The conversation shifts to a critique of the backyard ultra running scene, citing Blaine Burke's argument that its single-category structure marginalizes women.
  4. Blaine's data shows women make up only 5% of backyard ultra participants, and top female performances (e.g., Sarah Perry's 95 laps) are not recognized as world records.
  5. The proposed fix is to create separate world championships and categories for men and women to promote equity and participation.

Summary:

FAQs

Trail running in the bush offers beautiful scenery, fresh air, and wildlife, while city running often involves rubbish, industrial areas, and less pleasant surroundings.

Kangaroos can be huge and intimidating, but also surprisingly chill in some areas; they can hop over barbed wire fences easily and are considered pests in some regions.

Kangaroo meat is considered ethically sourced because kangaroos live wild lives and are not raised in feedlots, though hunting requires a license and passing a shooting test.

Blaine argues that the single-category structure leaves women at only 5% of fields, and performances like Sarah Perry's 95-lap effort are not celebrated as world records, so he proposes two categories for equity.

The gap widens because women are not held up as champions or given a separate category to strive for, reducing participation and development in the female field.

Women make up roughly 5% of all backyard ultra performances based on world rankings.
