The hosts of "What Chaos" engage in a humorous and analytical discussion blending hockey, fan culture, and media reactions. They critique ESPN’s controversial Halloween graphic, which features exaggerated jersey swaps, calling it tasteless and triggering strong emotional responses. The episode delves into the performance of teams like the Flames and Oilers, highlighting standout players such as Matthew Gridden and Michael Posava, while questioning the logic and timing of goal celebrations. A central theme is the emotional and cultural impact of player trades and retirements, with the hosts arguing that jersey retirements should reflect a player’s overall legacy, not just their exit. They also examine the growing trend of American players leaving Canada, suggesting that transparency around no-trade lists could empower fans but risk endangering player safety. The conversation extends to broader fan behaviors, such as taunting players or management, and reflects on how hockey narratives are shaped by drama and public sentiment. Ultimately, the hosts advocate for a more balanced perspective on team decisions, emphasizing that hockey fandom is not just about wins, but about the human stories behind them. The episode concludes with a nod to player legacies and the emotional toll of team decisions, balancing humor with thoughtful reflection on the sport’s evolving landscape.
It is Tuesday, October 27th, the United States and Canada, my name is Dean Beans.
I'm beside Pete Blackburn, boss, Massachusetts for a show called What Chaos Holding It Down
in the city of road teams in the game of the night is Sean Depaz, that's going to be
an absolute banger.
What else is going to be a banger, Pete?
On the show on What Chaos, let us discuss a bab discussion.
We need to have a bab discussion.
To bab discussion?
Yeah.
It's like babcock, but instead of cock, you're talking, so it's a bab discussion.
Okay.
Yep.
We're discussing cock.
We're dancing around the flame.
Tonight we dance around the flame.
We know about that.
All I know about is carrying the flame.
I knew that shit was coming.
Then we get to play spirit game, or we discuss and maybe have some fun with the dancing
of a certain flame.
A player that we have known long before our couple.
Some would say that that guy is carrying the flames.
Yes.
Maybe he's carrying the flames.
Keep going.
Merrick is going to join the show, Jeff Merrick.
It's an episode with Jeff Merrick, which means there's going to be a great episode.
And finally, Ryan Jack Adams, Warsawwski, and the reason you might, might ask, might
surprise you.
It might not.
I updated that to Sean.
I updated it to elevated Stenberg experience because he has been elevated.
Let's have an elevated time, hit it, Sean.
What chaos is presented by Fandall?
Have you heard the news?
Fandall is available everywhere, seriously, everywhere.
And if there's one thing we know about hockey fans, it's that they're everywhere too.
So whether you're following your favorite team, checking out the night's matchups, or
just making your picks, Fandall has you covered.
Download the Fandall app to get started.
Agent location restrictions apply, product availability varies by marketsifandall.com for
eligibility, gambling problem, call 1-800-Gambler.
Okay, we do have breaking news, Sean.
What are we looking at here?
It's a tremendous question.
Yeah.
This is breaking from ESPN on the everything app.
Why are you calling it that?
That's two times two days.
What else is it?
You are.
It's like an app that's like really giving you everything.
Everything is just hatred and people being absolutely awful.
But we were on the everything app.
You know what it is?
It's the podcast or version of when radio people would call ESPN, the worldwide leader.
That's fair.
Well, this is the worldwide leader in bullshit, because my god, seriously, what are we looking
at?
For audio listeners, ESPN posted a graphic to tease tonight's Hurricanes Bruins game
and said, "Happy Halloween."
And then the caption was, "How spooky would this be?"
And it's a Jersey swap with Sebastian Ajo locked in in a Bruins uniform and David Posternock
wearing a fucking Carolina Hurricanes uniform.
I came so close to tweeting at ESPN, take this shit down or I'm going to assassinate
Pat McAfee.
It's a good thing you didn't tweet that or say it.
Look man, he went to Utah one time.
He went to Utah one time.
He's going through a lot.
He is something horrible happened in Utah, so he's uncomfortable there.
I want, I want to be, I don't want to think about Pat McAfee ever.
Like, I probably shouldn't say that you're going to, I said that I almost tweeted it.
I didn't say that I was going to do it.
I said I was almost going to tweet it.
That would have been like the 25th worst thing I saw and the everything happened last 12
years.
The Pat McAfee experience, I, it's, I'm not rooting for Pat McAfee.
I don't really care about Pat McAfee, but the amount of Pat McAfee news that comes across
my desk.
And it's always that he's so unnecessary.
I mean, that guy could kick my ass, but what a bitch he is.
Oh my god, who swears that he does not care what people think about him spends a lot of
time thinking and talking about what people do.
And what sucks is I just called him a bitch and I apologize for that.
You should also apologize for some things that you've said on this show, but I apologize
for the joke that I almost sent that you think I did not send a, that guy needs to take
a leave.
And I don't want to take a beat.
I, yeah, like he, no, like he does.
If he's, if he, yeah, if he's having like paranoia that going to events, he's going to
die.
That's a scary thing and it's insane that he thinks going to a Utah college thing where
they're saying, Pat, we love you, but keep your shirt on is a threat to his life.
Like paranoia is a real thing and it's scary.
Like he shouldn't have to be going dated.
Like he needs to take a break and get better either that or this is all a work, which
I saw suggested today because I think that game day is going to be back in Utah in like
two weeks.
Today, this is just Pat McAfee's weird way of really teasing that return.
But I don't know invoking the assassination of Charlie Kirk into your work is crazy work.
Okay.
Crazy style.
Well, this is not a music podcast.
This is a hockey podcast.
So we will discuss that last joke I do want to make about that graphic is that Pierre
LeBron suggested that tweet.
He's like, yeah, what if the guys, what if the guys on the team were on the other teams?
Is there anything there?
And the ESPN was like, oh, yeah, yes.
There is.
Shut up, Pierre.
Pierre LeBron.
God for the shop.
Absolutely.
Okay.
Slay was bad last night, but had some entertaining moments, I am so excited.
If it weren't for this breaking news, we would have given the flames love to begin the
show.
We would have opened the show with giving the flames love because they have won four
in a row, including if I've to win over the Leafs last night that broke up the Leafs
winning streak.
Leafs.
It's over.
It's a shame that your win on Saturday was apparently a sham because you were playing
against such.
It was such an easy win for you.
But in fact, you should have been like, yo, we just did that ship.
No, over flames league now.
Matt Vagridden, who if you remember from our Leafs preview this year, we spoke of as
though we had known this guy for more than two days, we know this guy well.
And now you all know him, never wrong, just early, scores twice, hits the gritty, Sean
show it to me.
This isn't like the second period, by the way, right?
Right.
Yeah.
Correct.
Second period, Gritty.
Welcome to Jake Walman's America, obviously the three of us.
Right.
Jake Walman's America.
Calgary, Alberta.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, the second period thing did not fly by the desk of Justin Williams on the sports
net broadcast.
When that came across his transom, he was pissed about his transom.
He said, quote, I hate it.
And they said that several times.
He kept saying he heard.
And then after the game, they interviewed him and he was like, hey, that was pretty cool.
I wish he did it at a different time.
And I was like, no, Justin Williams, say with your chest, stand on business and he did
not.
But Matthew Gridden, by the way, he was the player that I was referring to as possibly
carrying the flames because, I mean, one would, the most obvious choice would probably
be Devin Cooley, who's been awesome this year.
But Matthew Gridden, he's got five goals and or four goals and seven points in his last
five games.
Thank you to Tony Reale in the chat for a stat correction or a stat clarification, I should
say.
It wasn't just a second period.
It was the very beginning of the second period.
There was 1935 left when he scored back goal.
He had a goal to celebrate last night.
Yes.
When are you supposed to celebrate?
When are you supposed to hit the gritty for the goal that you scored?
Yeah.
Not all of us through you score the goal.
Not all of us are Jake Walman.
We don't get to do it in overtime or I feel like a lot of Jake Walman's shit is in overtime.
Right?
Yeah.
It's goal celebrations or it's mocking somebody for sending the puck over the glass.
Jake Walman there, I say, is kind of a coward.
He walked so Matthew Gridden could fucking tap dance.
I mean, when you think about it, wouldn't it be like more cowardly behavior to do the
gritty after you score the game winning goal because there's no chance that that can be
answered?
That's what I'm saying.
What Walman does is safe and has it made people cry?
Oh, yeah.
It's Jake Walman doing anything.
But this, right, this is the real hold me back, bro, of goal celebrations where you're
on your way out the door already and you're like, hold me back, bro, here's my goal celebration.
Doing it right at the start of the second period, plenty of opportunity for the other team
to get their licks in.
And they just didn't.
It would be sick if he hit the Matthew Kachuck famous overtime celebration.
So they're right out to talk.
Let's go.
That'll do a boys doing the gritty.
Just right doing the gritty straight into the Zamboni tunnel and out into the locker room
would be truly unbelievable.
Well, Jake Walman can do that next time he scores because if he does the gritty during
the game, Mike Babcock's never going to play him again.
So he should just do a George Costanza like, all right, that's it.
that I'm out, I'm probably getting traded,
released, whatever it may be.
Shut up, I've agreed.
I do have to bring up a very controversial statement
that you made last night,
which was that the flames rock.
Oh yeah, yeah, I love what, if I said that,
then I lowercase S, stand by it,
but what I meant was I love watching the flames
when they're playing at home.
That may have been exactly what you said last night.
Which is as ridiculous a thing to say
as the flames rock.
Yeah, okay, quote, "Dude, I love the flames.
Follow up text only when they play at home."
(laughs)
I mean, this is a four game homestand,
but they've got a game to play in a location
that was predetermined today.
Yeah.
And they win.
This team wins.
That's what I like about the Calgary flames.
Sometimes.
But I like about James Rhymer, James Rhymer.
Rhymer.
Optimus Rhyme.
Yes, Optimus Rhyme.
Is that he's back in the league
and when he signed with the doubles,
we were like, or I'm sorry, the Rangers,
we were like, that's your solution.
And of course, he allowed a double Jari yesterday.
Shout out to the Jari account.
Yeah, it's a good account.
Jari account.
Sean, you put us on that game, right?
Yeah, I hadn't even fully,
I didn't know it was a thing either
until the Saber's Jari somebody.
I don't even remember who it was,
but yeah, then I sent it to you.
I figured you would get a kick out of that.
Typically, I'm, you know, I can be the,
hey, I'll handle the humor guy.
When it comes to certain things, like,
hey, like I can say it, not you.
I give the Jari account permission
to usually people to say that to me.
Maybe what's that?
I can say that, not you.
Yes, exactly.
That's Pete joking that he uses hate speech.
Yeah, like the, the, calling it a Jari funny.
Very funny.
Very.
Yeah, Jari, just at Jari tracker.
I mean, my favorite part of it is that our guy,
Jazz, who is like the statious stat boy of all stats,
like refers to it, refers to the Jari,
like it's an actual NHL stat,
which I'm fully into embracing.
How many Jaris do they have?
It wasn't called a hat trick until one day,
someone started calling it a hat trick.
Shout out the LA Kings who got to win a game
because of that, by the way.
It's somebody, I guess Chad is just asking
for a clarification on what the fuck a Jari is.
Fair, a Jari is when you allow a goal
on the first shot of the game.
So a goal, these number of Jaris is how many times
they've allowed a shot, a goal on the first shot of the game.
It was famously a double Jari.
If you're James Rhymer last night,
he allowed two goals on the first two shots of the game.
And then the third one wasn't much better.
That was probably the worst goal of the night.
No, it wasn't the most upsetting goal of the night, I would say.
And we will get to that in just a second
because we have discussed.
Well, it was the most upsetting goal for James Rhymer.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
We have mentioned two of the three NHL games
that were played last night.
We'll get to the Timberwolves later, maybe, if that's good.
We don't need to.
The other one is that the Detroit Red Wings
beat the Edmonton Oilers for three in a shootout.
The Oilers have now lost back-to-back games
for the first time all season.
Both of these games were at home.
They are the anti-flames.
I think that there is one team in Alberta
that can handle their business at home.
It's not the Edmonton Oilers.
I'm sick of Mike Babcock.
And I've thought this during winning streaks,
I've been like, I'm going to be that person
that the second this team starts losing
is going to be like Fire Mike Babcock
and watch this space because Fire Mike Babcock
isn't coming from me right now, but two and two.
It's coming soon.
Well, we all said, all of us said
the Oilers were going to start strong.
I think we didn't know how it was going to happen.
We didn't think it was going to be hospital Oilers
and Mick David and Dr. Isadl doing it all themselves.
That's amazing, but probably could have guessed.
Yeah.
No, I mean, we didn't think that everybody
was going to be as hurt as they've been though.
And it's reached a point where him not splitting them up,
like I think they gave Dr. Isadl a shift last night
at one point in the third period with maybe Fredrick
and Howard, but other than that,
it really is that line does everything.
Everybody else sucks.
Sean, do you have the J fresh tweet
that was posted during the third period?
Look at this.
This is the expected five on five goal share.
And I can tell you, although I don't have my cheaters on
because famously, I don't wear glasses.
But if you're listening, let's see.
All right.
[LAUGHS]
OK.
So on the left, you see a balance of the lines
for the Detroit Red Wings.
And on the right, there's five players.
I can tell you who they are.
It's Mick David, Dr. Isadl, Pod Colson.
And it's Evan Bouchard, and whoever's playing with Evan
Bouchard, which last night happened to be Shakir
Mook Madulin.
Suddenly great game for Shakir Mook Madulin.
Amazing start to the season for Vasili Pod Colson.
I wonder if it's a who they're playing with type of situation.
Who are those guys not playing with?
Who are Mick David, Dr. Isadl and Bouchard not playing with?
I would direct your eyes to the bottom of that graphic
where every other Edmonton Oiler's player sits beneath
every other player in the game.
That is as astonishing, but not astonishing as the--
do you know what, Connor McDavid's on pace for 290 million points?
Yes, because he's playing with a Hall of Famer
and he's the greatest player ever.
That's not surprising.
That's not surprising, so why is it still happening?
You know, I was going to say, you say it's not surprising.
You know, this is a great time to be alive for all of the people
who have lazy opinions about the Oilers and what they are.
Because now it's true.
It's Mick David, it's dry sidle, and then it's literally
every other forward.
And it's Evan Bouchard.
Well, those lazy people don't say that.
Yeah, that's true.
We want to meet these people where they live.
Just talking about the forwards, they say it's Mick David,
it's dry sidle, and then everybody else is dog shit.
Nobody else counts.
That is probably unfair to the silly pod calls
and but those people haven't heard of the silly pod calls.
And so they say, Mick David, dry sidle, everybody else.
And now they're right.
Yeah.
Sean, the Oilers were up.
I'm going to talk about just give me a second on the third line
of this team, which I know last week.
I said someone asked me to say nice things about the third line,
which was playing well, and I was like, let's pump the brakes
until we see maybe water, seek its level.
The third line, which is the biggest, oh my God,
how the fuck is that a third line?
Injuries or no injuries of Alex Foremanton, Owen Michaels,
and Matthew Joseph has allowed a goal in each of the last five games.
The Oilers inexplicably were up two to one in this game last night.
Watch Alex Foremanton on this next shift.
Just to shoot it from there, he was red.
Heart, let's send back on the ice.
As this puck is slam off the outside of the goal,
and then in front it flicks off the laser by hand and finny.
Mainly I like it because it ends with an amateur goal.
Emmett's finny of like nine career goals,
ten of which are against the Emmett and Oilers.
That guy rocks, but--
Guy rocks in October.
- We all know that. - Yes.
Look, Alex Foremanton is fast and sometimes on the ice,
he's in the spot to make a play.
He does not always make the play.
And I think, and I'm gonna do Alex Foremanton a solid here
and only talk about him from a hockey standpoint right now.
This one's for you, Alex.
Alex Foremanton fucking sucks, and he should not play.
All right, I mean, he did, he chunked a breakaway
pretty bad last night, too.
- That's what I'm saying.
Like he does end up in spots where, yeah.
He can't finish, and that giveaway last night
was absolutely horrible.
That you have to, Mike Babcock,
you have a cheat code of players on your roster.
You can put pod Coleson, dry sidle,
and captain together, and take a spary captain
from being a, like, love your cosperry,
kind of useless, sucky player,
to being a really solid top six player.
Put Mick David with literally anybody
and those guys will cook because they have Connor Mick David.
And then, yes, you'll have two lines
rather than one, as you await other guys
to get back from injury.
- The good news is that they're getting healthier,
and those injuries are getting mitigated,
just kidding, Zach Hemens out for like a week or two now.
- That was fucking brutal.
That was, we're gonna have a friend of fellow friend
of Zach Hemens, Jeff Merrick on with us in just a second.
The, I hate watching what I think are concussions,
but the worst moment of watching a concussion
is when, like, the tough warrior thing melts away,
and, like, all of the bracing that you're doing and everything
just stops, and you just fucking grab your head.
That was brutal to watch.
They're also without a million people at home,
and shoot, why can't I think of his name?
Matthew Savoy, among them.
Okay, Dickinson on his way back, though.
- Dickinson on his way back.
What chaos is brought to you by Fandool?
If you know hockey Fandool has something

Keep it going for three days and that's $150 in bonus bets guaranteed and with the NHL
in action throughout the week, there's always plenty of ways to put those bonus bets to
work.
Par example, Sabres and Sharks have the tuck tonight.
You know that Sabres and Sharks with a 1040 tuck in San Jose.
That can be unbelievable.
Last three Sharks games have gone at least seven goals, I think you know where I'm going
with this.
I keep adding the over on the oilers too.
It hits everything.
It's I wonder why.
Stenberg playing with Celebrini tonight might have some fun with the over in that game.

Yes, Peter.
I just want to say I do want to get to Michael post of a chat after our guest.
Oh, okay.
Give him a love.
Yep.
Yep.
Yes, a little love by showing this clip, a friend of the show, Eric Tolsky, who we totally
know of all the people that are going to be on the show today.
We are the show that Eric Tolsky really feels comfortable with and respect us.
But he went a little out of his way.
He was like, oh, let me maybe hop on another one and we were like, Eric, you don't need
to ask us.
You're good.
Merrick's good.
We vouched for him.
So he went on.
The first time going on with Merrick.
Check out this clip of Eric Tolsky off a great question from Merrick.
Did you watch Sunny made his press conference on Saturday morning to catch any of that?
So there was there was one moment and I've been wondering about that.
It was a shocking moment for me.
Maybe it shouldn't be, but it it was where I know he was asked about expected goal models
and talked about public models versus private with the teams have and the information teams
have versus what is public.
And while he said, like, look, I'm not going to look down my nose at what is what is public
and people work hard to put these models together.
Eric, we have, and this is the line, we have 14 expected goal models.
I kind of went 14 different things.
For teams like New Jersey and obviously the Carolina hurricanes, would you have something
similar?
Like, would you have 14 expected goal models as well?
Like is that, is that like new industry standard?
Yeah, 14 is basically industry standard now.
We like to go deeper here.
So we have 15 that we use.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, incredible.
Get fucked.
Sorry.
Eric Tolsky.
Absolutely.
Metric mode.
Oh.
Incredible performance.
All right.
Let's bring on Jeff Merrick from the sheet.
You know him from a lot of things.
And now, Merrick and Machinsky back on the sheet.
We absolutely love that.
Hey, buddy.
What's going on?
Making my volume fixed here.
Yeah, that was great.
That was Eric Tolsky, big dog in Sonimera, which I made the point that, I don't know if
you guys know this, I, I was told this a while ago and I really wanted to be true.
I think that it is.
The Stanley Cup weighs 35 pounds.
Do you know much the Walter Cup, the PWH, always?
Ooh.
I don't.
I don't, well, nobody knows because they can't find it.
30s.
Well, they can't find.
36.
They wanted it to be one pound heavier than the Stanley Cup.
Really?
That's what I was told.
Yes, I was told by a couple of players and I really, really want that to be true.
That was the equivalent of we're making the Cup one pound heavier than yours.
Yeah, we have 15 models.
You helped to find the Walter Cup over the summer when it was missing, one of like the
several times it was missing.
Yeah, it, they don't have like a keeper, the PWHL doesn't have a keeper of the cup.
They might now.
I didn't help find it.
It was, it was, before Abby Rock got it in Susaint Marie, it went missing and so Minnesota
had to loan her on the Saturday in Susaint Marie their keeper cup and then Aaron Ambrose
on the Monday also got the keeper cup from Minnesota.
Right?
So you have like a touring cup and then you have like keeper cups as well, that team, that
team's get and so Minnesota lent it to the Montreal girls for a couple of, for a couple
of parties, which was quite generous.
I'm not sure if the guys would do that.
Hey, could we borrow the cup for our party?
Yeah.
You later.
You also, while we're giving you credit for stuff, I did not realize until I was listening
to the sheet yesterday, he's not signing, Jeff Merrick.
Who?
He's not signing, Chance.
Oh, yeah.
I like that idea.
That was America.
So I threw it out there on the show on Friday and then I was on St. Harrison Price on
Friday as well and I threw it out there because I was wondering, because look, Vancouver, Vancouver
Connects fans are wildly creative as I'm sure you to know.
Now, I think the Winnipeg may take the cake with all of them, so we'll see what happens
on the 10th of November.
But I wondered if they would go after the Minnesota Wild fans.
Like leave it to Vancouver to say like, okay, so here's the, here's the line.
We're going to go a little bit higher.
We're going to take it one step further.
I was really wondering if they would not just vent everything at Quinn or if they would
after actually go after Bill Garan and Minnesota Wild fans and sure enough they did.
Now, I do have to say, I do have to mention one thing as well because going into, to do
in Friday shows is like, okay, so we'll be a good one for Vancouver.
He's not signing as an obvious.
Blake Price had a better one and I really wish Vancouver fans would have picked up on
it.
If every time he was on the ice, how awesome would this have been?
He's a rental.
He's a rental.
That one.
That would have been the money chant for Quinn.
He was on Sunday.
He's a rental.
Blake Price.
Yeah.
I love, I mean, taunting the players one thing.
That's good, clean, fun.
Go after the fan base.
Go after the GM.
I mean, GM.
Yes.
I'm with you.
I'm with you.
Yes.
You're a spurned lover and they've found somebody new.
You can master them.
I mean, pestering them is what you did your whole relationship presumably.
If you really want to fuck with their situation, it's planting stuff in the new person's mind.
Yeah.
I mean, like quite strictly.
That's right.
It's a numbers game.
You can fuck with one person or you can fuck with an entire fan base, which is thousands
millions of people and respectfully to Quinn Hughes and respectfully to Joe Biden.
There's a little Joe Biden to Quinn Hughes where you're like, are you really getting
in his head?
Is that, is that, is that, do a whole, here's the thing though, guys.
There is, like I look at November 10th and that's the Winnipeg New Jersey game, right?
In Manitoba.
There is enough time for a, the embers to still be hot with Connor Hallibuk.
Okay, like this is like, take a take here, a couple of weeks.
And also enough time for Winnipeg Jets fans to get together and really do something special.
And fans in Canada right now, whether it's Ottawa, whether it's Vancouver, have raised
the bar for going after, you know, their spurned lovers.
So I'm really curious, I mean, the game is going to be the game.
What Winnipeg Jets fans come up with, but the other point in it too is you can go after
Brady could chuck every time he's on the ice, that's cool.
He also leaves the ice.
You can go after Quinn Hughes, whenever you want, he also leaves the ice.
We've never seen this with a goalie.
Like what do you do when the object of your scorn is on the ice for the full 60 minutes
and maybe longer?
Like Jets fans won't take a break, will they?
Are we going to see like 60 full minutes of this?
We might.
Jets, don't take penalties because there's going to be like 10 to 15 seconds where he'll
leave the ice.
You want to be relentless.
Yes.
Stay on your best behavior.
We want to set up.
We want to put our fans in a position to succeed.
Yeah.
I mean, I hadn't considered that because I did, I tweeted over during the Quinn Hughes game.
I was like, there can be a worse player to half to boo than Quinn Hughes every time he
touches the puck because he has the puck like half to go much.
Yeah.
So that's going to be interesting.
But I hadn't considered the goal tender aspect of it.
Well, we haven't seen it before.
Like we've seen like the return of some goal tenders and fans like, okay, grumble, grumble,
grumble.
But now this is very much invoked, very, very much invoked and this was in his high profile.
This one's things and it doesn't just sting, you know, the fan base you can tell by
the way the players spoke by the way that's got our Neil initially spoke.
Even though Kevin Shevelday, I've tried to give it a soft landing.
We all know the feelings there in management.
We all know the feelings in ownership too.
Like, this is poised to be special here, guys.
Yeah.
But it really is.
Doesn't it seem though like they do want to kind of have their ducks in a row for an
eventual not reunion, obviously, but an eventual like he has his number retired or he ends
up being like a beloved jet.
It's such a good question because he, listen, when he was the best offense from the Vancouver
concocts ever had full stop, oh, yeah, full stop, right?
And, you know, Connor Halibuk is the best goal tender, the Winnipeg Jets have ever had.
The nerves are still too close to the scan.
I think to eat.
even think about it, but somewhere,
put it this way, when Conor Halibuk
gets his jersey retired in Winnipeg,
who's still gonna be there?
- I mean, do they even retire it?
Like, I just feel like--
- Yeah, yeah.
- He's the best, he's the best,
he's the best, he's the best, he's the best.
He's the best, I understand, I get it, I understand.
But don't, time heals things.
My only question is, it's even too early to contemplate,
but one day Conor Halibuk will have
his number retired by the Jets.
- Didn't she have the right thing to do?
It stings, I know, and for some, it stinks,
but some of those fans, obviously some of those fans
are still gonna be there, but--
- Didn't she have a day off?
- This is why I couldn't have her own a team.
- Oh yeah, I don't know, come out there and be like,
"Hey, dude, dude, you'd be the wrong way."
- Hang on a second, Fedorov.
- Hang on, Fedorov.
- Yeah, you'd be like, "It grudged forever."
- Over my dead body, literally.
- Thank you, this, and you know what?
That's what the LH family said for the longest time, right?
This was the issue, I mean, part of it was the offer sheet
because there was a Karmano's versus Illich,
little Caesar's versus Confiware,
but the bigger one was Anaheim.
That's the one where they really felt like,
"Oh man, I can't believe you did this to us
for all of these reasons.
We made you a better offer,
where you're home, all these types of things,
it's till you chose to go to California."
And forever until last year they kept Fedorov's jersey away.
And we all looked and said, "Come on, like this is ridiculous."
Like Larry Orie's number has been unretired
by the Detroit Red Queen.
So there's a whole side story to that
when we can go down on another show,
but this one was like so obvious.
Like how do you not have Fedorov?
And finally they had to relent and finally do it.
But the way that normally, like when there's big moments
like this, you look at the history of the NHL.
When do teams do jersey retirements?
- Depends on the player, I mean, after the player retires.
- Yeah, okay, very good.
And I thank you, thank you, thank you.
- No, you don't need to do jersey retirements
when the team's bad.
- Oh, right.
- You need to get people in the building.
When the team's rocking,
you're not doing jersey retirements,
you don't need it to sell a ticket.
Part of it is to get everybody in the building.
If you're not going to sell wins,
you can sell in the nostalgia.
And you can sell.
This guy was one of the best two-way players
the game has ever seen.
And he was ours, and that's celebrated.
And here he goes, the jersey to the rafters.
And thank you for buying tickets to your Detroit Red Wings.
You do it when the team's bad.
And having a hard time selling tickets.
- So you're saying the Conjocular Rattire Quinn
uses jersey next week.
(laughing)
- Next week.
(laughing)
- Oh, I mean, dude.
I'm almost-- - Right before the draft.
- Well, I'm with you on the free, that's good.
- Like you don't retire the player's number
if it wasn't all happy and everything.
I'm also a realist.
I mean, people are like,
who are the greatest New England Patriots ever?
- It's like Tom Brady, it's Gronk, it's like,
and you get into like Julian Edelman and Troy Brown
and all those guys.
- You're like, well, no, like,
it's like Tom Brady, Gronk, and Randy Moss.
- Yeah. - And I know that Randy Moss,
but like Randy Moss was on that team
for a little bit.
That guy's the third best one ever
because he's fucking Randy Moss.
And in the case of the Jets,
in the case of the Connux with Quinn Hughes,
like obviously the story ended up being a negative one,
but you had that fucking guy, it's worth something.
- Yeah, but it is, yeah, but like a Jersey retirement,
you tell like that stuff telling the full story
of a player's career with the team.
And yes, like, as far as I was the owner,
I would be saying, like, yes,
we had a great goal tender and he has all,
won an MVP, won Vesna's, he had a great career,
but he didn't respect the organization.
Like, he fucking pissed on the organization
and forces way out halfway through a contract.
For me, like, that is a, that is the end of story
and then there is no chapter beyond that.
- Okay, I get that and that's very, trust me.
I'm with you Pete, 100% net is divine
and Winnipeg and that is how everybody feels.
From ownership, all the way down.
- Especially when the end of everyone there.
Like, he never won and was part of the reason they never won.
- Part, yes, absolutely and no one,
no one is disqualifying what you're saying here.
But players also do get traded out of markets, right?
Like, this is like this, this part of my issue
with all of this is we're trying to pretend
that organizations only do well by players.
How many players, there's an entire history of players
that have been spurned by their teams.
Sorry, we got a better offer for you.
Sorry, that's just the way that it goes.
Like, this is not a one way street here, whatsoever.
I know that the way that it unraveled
with hella buck was awkward.
It was, this was roller skating down a gravel road, man.
Like, that's how bad it was.
That's how hemp fisted the entire summer was.
I get what happened with Brady Kitschock.
Everybody defended him.
He kept saying, no, I love it here.
I'm the captain and everybody was right behind him
and then, oh yeah, he's sudden going to go play
with my brother and sends fans felt rightly duped.
Same thing with John Tveris with the New York Islanders.
They were led to believe one thing and then flip flop.
Here we go, he's the picture of the pajamas.
So I get all that, but I don't think we can pretend
that teams have always done right by their players, right?
And at the same time, team sign players to contracts
and don't honor those contracts for the full duration.
They get a trade offer that makes sense for them.
Third turn around and trade them.
You know, the same time when a player says,
yeah, I know I signed this contract,
but I would also like a trade.
Somehow, it's banets and torches and pitchforks
for that player.
Teams do it all the time to players.
I think loyalty can't just go one way.
It can't just go one way.
He respects the bosses.
I just think it's different when the player says,
like straight up quits on the team, like more than ass out,
straight up quits on the team.
And I think that teams quit on players all the time.
We have a whole day around it 'cause it's called trade deadline.
We have a day to celebrate teams quitting on players.
Every single year we do this.
And every major network blows our brains up,
flying everybody in.
It's a big celebration.
TSN has a zoo on stage.
It's a big, huge day.
Everybody gets together to celebrate teams quitting on players.
We're not familiar with that.
We don't do anything for the deadline deadline.
Can I ask, do you think the islanders
are gonna retire John Tavares' number?
In my world, yes.
And I think eventually one day they will,
but that one's gonna take a long time.
Yeah, I'm not gonna say no shot in hell,
but like I can't imagine a time.
It's a tough one where islanders fans show up
to their home building, look up in the rafters.
See Tavares' name and number there and feel good about it.
Like, and I feel maybe that's the same way with Hellowbuck.
Maybe that's the same way with Larkin at some point in Detroit.
Are there going to be fans who show up to the building
and look up, see the name and number and feel good about it?
And like the answer is no, then why does the team do it?
It's a great question.
To, I mean, what those are supposed to do
is celebrate that player's exceptional performance
during the time he was a member of that team.
And are you going to completely erase that player's history
based on how the exit was?
Now, I'm gonna tell you guys something.
I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth here.
I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth
because I've always firmly been of the belief.
Like, I'll take it outside of hockey here.
I firmly believe that you judge an organization
not by how they bring you in, but how they let you go.
That's how you judge them.
That is how you judge an organization.
Like, personalize it for everybody watching
and listening to what chaos right now.
Just think about your own history.
How do you judge the places where you have worked?
By the way, they brought you in?
No, of course not, because everybody loves it.
It's sunshine and lollipops and, you know,
cocaine and champagne and everything's wonderful.
It's all so much fun.
But the way that they bring you up, that is a sensitive time.
And that defines who you are as an organization.
I think we should apply that as well to hockey teams.
I'm with you, Merrick.
I'm kind of talking about both sides of my mouth, too, on this.
But I want to bounce this off of Pete
because this is a player who, similar to John Tavarez,
first overall pick, spent a similar amount of time
with their team that drafted him.
Different ending, though.
If the Boston Bruins said we want to retire Joe Thornton's
number, do you think Joe Thornton would even let them do it?
Probably not.
I mean, he probably would, because why would Joe Thornton say no?
But as a Bruins fan, I would say to the Bruins,
you don't get to do that.
You don't get to that.
Well, that's what I'm saying.
Would Joe Thornton be like, the fuck you are, dude?
Yeah.
Yeah.
And chat.
That's the point that I have forgotten.
The ad is already retired.
Number 91 for Butch Coring.
Which, like, incredible moves.
No, no, listen, you can do two numbers.
That's fine.
Montreal has done that, like, Toronto, like, that's fine.
And that's just like reality.
Once you've decided, I know with Toronto,
specifically, it was tough with, you know,
Mahavallitra or Siltler with 27.
Montreal has got their overlaps, too.
So you still can do that.
But man, that Boston one is a good one.
How does Joe Thornton feel about the Jacobs family?
That's whatever is what it comes right down to.
It's a great game.
It's a great wrestling game.
And it's welcome back, so-and-so.
There's always a former player.
- Larry David, you don't see it, Larry David.
Well, you don't see him, it's all the same.
Larry Bird, you don't see it's Celtics games,
and that's a little peculiar.
- Well, I think now we can't really travel as much.
- And he's got stronger ties to another organization
as an executive.
- Exactly, never seen Joe Thornton at TD Garden.
- Yeah, it's true.
And honestly, I don't blame Joe Thornton
if he doesn't want to come back to Boston,
and that is what it is.
- See, this is why I love Adelaide.
- By the way, because, can we, just before we continue,
one of the things, I'm in love
with the alternative universe in the NHL.
Like, what could have happened if this happened,
which is why I always feel that GM's
when the careers are over, should write a book,
and talk about all the things that almost happened
and trades they almost made,
because there's all these different parallel universes
of the NHL that run sideways right along the National Hockey League.
Mike Keenan told me when he was in Florida,
they had a deal worked out.
It was one for one, it was Joe Thornton
for Roberta LaWongo.
And the owner of the Alan Cohen would have been
the owner of the Florida Panthers
didn't want to take money back in the deal,
so the deal never happened.
How different is the universe?
- Was this higher hockey universe?
- I'm assuming, this is Boston, not San Jose.
- No, this is Boston.
It was LaWongo for Thornton one for one.
That's what Keenan told me.
- Holy shit.
- How different is the--
- Oh, they actually made--
- Now I was gonna say, today I learned,
Michael Connell spoke to another team.
(laughing)
- He did talk to Berkey and Anaheim,
so he did talk to a couple.
- I was gonna, something's in my brain.
I don't know if that's out there or whatever.
Like, I have some sort of association
of Berk tried to do something there, right?
- He did, yes.
He had a list of, I think it was,
I'll ask Berkey on Friday.
I think it was five players that were no fly zone,
and Connell could choose from anybody else.
- I mean, conceptually, I hate the idea
of trading like a young superstar center
for a gold tender.
But-- - Early 2000, real.
- And based off of what actually happened,
of course that would have been a better deal.
- But then we never would have got
to pump the tires moment between Thomas and LaWongo.
- Yeah.
- And who's coaching the ones right now?
- And one of the great Stanley Cubs
that we've seen of all time, 2011, honestly.
That's why, you think of how different
is the entire universe.
And what does Joe Thornton, the Florida Panthers,
do for the Florida Panthers at that point?
- That was my first year covering hockey,
and every step of the way, every round
the brothers would win, Joe McDonnell,
then a VSPN was like, dude,
the rest of your career is going to fucking psych.
This is the best thing as good as it can be right now,
and like during that cup final,
which is, I've still never seen anything like it.
2011 cup final was incredible.
- Yeah, that was one for the ages.
I remember me and Scott Morrison
working at CBC set up outside the CBC building
in Vancouver when the first van exploded
outside the post office.
And we got grabbed and hustled inside,
and then we tried to make our way back to the hotel,
and there was a healthy mix of police,
and horses, and fire, and crystal math fights.
- Jesus.
- That's what I remember trying to get back to the hotel.
- I mean, on the Hello Buck thing,
I did want to ask you about the bigger trend going on right now,
which is the Exodus from Canada of American players,
and like where you stand on all that as it is right now.
- See, I kind of look at it.
I kind of go wider on it, Pete.
It's a great question, and let's trust me.
Every Canadian hockey fan has had this conversation
from the school yard to the barn yard, right,
to the hockey ranks, like everybody has talked about this
post-gold medal for the US, and subsequent players leaving.
I think it links in an even bigger issue,
and that is what's the future of hockey in Canada?
Whether it's like right now, Canadians are feeling
overmonetized by how they watch hockey.
The sport itself is incredibly expensive to play.
Trust me, I've got three kids involved,
and it ain't cheap.
And you know, now I think all this,
also one of the umbrella, there hasn't been a Stanley Cup
in Canada going back to 1993.
That was Gary Betman's first year on the job.
Like, Betman's gonna go through an entire career
as a commissioner of the NHL,
and I've only handed out the Stanley Cup once in Canada.
There are a lot of Canadian hockey fans right now
who have options for themselves and for their children
to do things other than hockey.
And I just wonder, like everyone,
there's a point at which people just say enough.
Right, I can't keep doing this.
You know, I feel like at every turn,
someone's got their hand in my pocket,
and I'm just trying to enjoy hockey games here.
I'm just trying to be a hockey fan.
I don't like being treated like a walking ATM.
And I think that the amount of,
not just American players too, but also,
and Berkey always mentions this, he said, you know,
you would be shocked how many Canadian players
have all the Canadian markets on their no trade.
Like, they just want, he said, it would be stunning.
Now, I flip around, and I'm curious,
well, you guys think about this one.
How would you feel?
I can already hear, I'm gonna turn my phone off
'cause agents will be calling me now screaming at me,
'cause they have before when I've mentioned this.
If you wanna do something with the no trade, no move,
situation, how much of it would be different
if those lists were made public?
I would love it.
I mean, everybody would, except for the players.
Yeah.
I mean, yeah, it's hard to imagine the players
signing off on that, or agents wanting that.
Everything can be collectively bargained.
You get, then the owners would give something up for that,
and you give some sort of concession to make that,
but I mean, just given what a nightmare,
with the whole, and I'm sure you know the thing,
but the thing about it, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry.
So the thing about it is,
what we've realized this year in hockey
is manufactured animosity is still good, right?
It's really, drama is good for hockey,
and for hockey interests, like it's fantastic.
I always make the sideways joke
that low-hanging fruit is still nutritious.
You can still eat that apple,
even if it's close to the ground.
It's still nutritious that orange as well.
That's an instant way to manufacture emotions
when every fan base knows who wants to play there
and who doesn't.
Yeah, but I play in Devils Advocate here, my pushback,
and I think the easy counter from the player side of things
would that it could be considered like a,
a risk of safety, or a risk of personal well-being
when the lists are out there,
and then they start getting messages
from pissed off fans who were threatening them,
or they fear for their safety when they go to Utah,
and things like that.
So I just, I wonder if that's the easy pushback
from the player side of things in the game.
I can see the reason that,
and I can see agents saying that too.
Absolutely.
I can.
And I think in the case of publicizing players salaries,
which was initially to benefit the players,
so if Pete and I are on the same team,
I'm scoring more goals than Pete.
I need to know how much Pete's making,
so my agent can go and ask for more,
so the owner can't screw me over.
That was initially supposed to be a good thing,
and it still does benefit the players,
but it brought about psychological torment of, fuck.
Players know that I'm the fifth-most-highest-paid guy
on the team, and if I go a few games without scoring,
then they're gonna fucking ate me,
and like players will tell you about that,
so I don't see enough of the good
for how it benefits players at all.
This would not benefit.
Make no mistake, but this would not benefit.
Salary disclosure, again,
we go back to the late Bob Good enough for this one.
He realized and recognized and got the players on board.
Salary disclosure overall was a boon,
a boon for the players.
Trade exemption, or trade list disclosure,
would be the opposite.
But I'm sure there's plenty of owners that would be like,
thank you for the list.
I'm now calling Heart Levenit Puckpedia.
- Exactly.
- Exactly, I'm pretty good all on there.
- Merrick, we could talk hockey,
or what was it?
Horses on meth.
I don't know if the horses were on meth.
- That sounds like the horse work.
- It was, I saw a guy.
Like, me and Morrison walk in,
decked out of a goover during 11, grab a guy,
and he ran with him with his fist cocked.
And right before he got to this wall,
he hit him with this punch like from the seller.
And I've never seen anyone take a punch like that.
He like ate it, and like shook his head,
and then like hulked up.
And I'm like, Scott, we gotta get out of here, man.
Like this is the most frightening thing.
Like I've seen crystal meth guys take punches before,
nothing like that, and like stupid fights.
That was the wildest punch received.
I've ever seen in my life.
And I'm like, we're not in Kansas anymore here.
- And that was that you would see.
- I've watched enough episode of cops
to know that that's how it goes sometimes.
There's like two, three tasers in the mix,
and they are not-- - And like, I still go in!
- Yeah.
- And you were coming from the 2011 cup final,
and you're like, that is the most surprising punch I have seen.
- We went to, I remember there was,
'cause it was swarming.
We went into a restaurant.
I think it was a keg, and there was a lot of tear gas
that the streets were flooded with.
And so I was sitting with--
remember what Michael Ansberg was there from TSN,
so I sat down and was having a class of wine with Michael.
And all of a sudden, like the cops were hitting the streets
and there was a ton of tear gas, and it was getting
into the restaurant, so they squired us all
into the meat locker, into the freezer.
And we had to stay in the freezer for an hour,
and they said, you can either stay here,
or you can take your chances on the street.
- That's how wild--
- That's how wild getting back to the hotel was.
- See, after that game, maybe it was because
I grew up a Bruins fan, and I thought I was never going
to see the Bruins win a Stanley Cup.
I was, maybe I was like too young to understand the danger.
I was like 22 years old, something like that.
But-- - Yeah.
- I was not super worried about that.
They were like, it was crazy. - It was crazy.
It's got, we got to take a detour and everything,
the city's on fire and everything, and I was like,
"Bruins won the fucking show."
- He did the grand love hockey.
- You know what, the Gregory Campbell and Daniel Paye
really just turned around that first period
after the connox were fucking smoke,
and the Bruins had lost every road game this year.
What the f--- are we getting on the bus?
- To be fair, and I don't, I obviously like,
it's bad behavior and a bad result,
and I don't want anybody to be in danger,
but that was the only way for that Stanley Cup
to end base off of the way that it was played for seven games.
- Yes, fire.
- There is only, yeah.
The only way that that Cup could have been concluded
is with a city burning down.
- The thing that I hated about it,
and I got a hustle on this,
I got my show coming up here,
but the thing that I hated was the narrative
that, oh, those weren't really hockey fans
that did all that.
I'm like, how many anarchists
are wearing like Christian air hoff jerseys?
Like, come on, like, it is possible for hockey fans
to do like, really, really stupid stuff.
Like, let's pump the break,
that those weren't really fans, please.
- Yes, I mean, you just,
you just go on the everything after these days,
and you'll see hockey fans doing 20 dumb stuff.
- Merrick, you're the greatest.
- Thanks, boys.
- We kept you a little long.
Everybody check out his show, the sheet.
Now with Greg Waschinski,
we're so glad they're back together.
- Yeah, man.
- Have a good one, buddy.
- Thanks.
- You're the best.
- Yeah, I hear that, and I'm like,
God, I knew Waschinski back then,
but I was probably too shy
to ask for the intro or Merrick autograph.
But yeah, his post, his game's seven post game.
I think he was just too grown up
and aware of his surroundings.
I was like,
so the Bruins won that game, huh?
- I mean, if that happened now,
I mean, obviously.
- I would have every panic attack I could have,
I would have freaked the fuck up.
- No, but I'm just saying like,
if that series has had been played,
and my favorite team won the Stanley Cup,
and then as a person who loves chaos, got to watch
the opposing city basically burn,
or not literally burn.
I fear that as an adult,
my mindset would be like,
well, it's just never gonna get better than this.
- Yeah, sure.
- It's never gonna get better than this.
This is straight up the peak
of my entire sports watching, sports fandom existence.
I may have checked out, like straight up.
I fear, I think that it was a benefit to me
that I was young enough that like, stupidly,
I could be like, that could happen again.
- Yeah.
- I'm gonna stick around with that,
that could happen again.
- Well, I mean, I think to make this about hockey,
but you had to say it on the show, one top two.
But like, I wonder if players who win the Cup
as a rookie are like,
so this is,
what it's like, this is playing in the NHL.
- So wow, I expect, you know,
I thought I might score some goals here and there,
but I forgot, I'm gonna win the Cup all the time.
- Yeah, that's a razor of,
this is Tyler Sagan's Eastern Conference Final
against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
- No, he did score a few goals.
Yeah, he was playing with Michael Ryder
on that third line.
- Yeah, I thought you said,
I thought I'd score a few goals.
Oh, I thought you meant you was saying,
I wish that I scored a few goals.
- Oh, there you go, man, I thought I would score some goals.
- This shit sucks.
- I would love to talk to Tyler Sagan,
we'd love to have him on the show.
- Yeah, okay.
It sets up this question.
Sean, should the Sabers Retire Alex Tux number?
- Definitely.
- I did want to say the whole time
you were having that conversation.
I was like, you know, if you want to go somewhere
to see a 91 Tavares hanging in the rafters.
- Oh my God.
- You go to Keybank Center
because John Tavares, one of the greatest
of the cross-player slash coaches of all time
with the greatest athlete named John Tavares in his family.
- Oh, right.
- Did he wear an anyone?
- Yeah, has his number retired in Keybank Center.
- Damn.
- You have a number sharing in the family.
- Yeah.
- That's big.
- Marchment energy.
- Respect.
- Yeah.
- I didn't want to talk about Michael Posava,
because that was the fucking story of last night for me.
Michael Posava making his first NHL start.
Doing it against the Oilers and the league's best offense
and shutting that shit down and shoot out
against McDavid Dry side of Ryan Nuget Hopkins.
Pretty incredible stuff.
I'll be honest.
I didn't know the fuck,
who the fuck that guy was heading into last night.
- I found, I have my understanding
of the Detroit Red Wings the last few years
has been that they are overflowing with gold tenders.
Gold tenders who are in the pipeline,
gold tenders that they've got to trade away
because they're gonna have to put them on waivers
and risk losing them.
A la Sebastian Cosa.
- Yeah.
- I'd never heard of this Posava guy.
And quite frankly, I'm watching that game.
I didn't hear of him until the shootout
because the Oilers once, 17 minutes without a shot on the. - Oh, he made some big stops over the course of that game,
especially late in the third period.
- I can't, I thought you was all whatever.
He didn't make a huge impact in my brain
because the Oilers were terrible.
- Those are your Oilers, colored glasses.
They were bad last night, but you. - I'm saying the Oilers were bad.
- No, no, no, no, I'm saying that that's the lens
that you're reviewing it through
because you're an Oilers fan.
You're like, my team fucking sucks right now.
- Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
He was good, but the Oilers could have been a lot better
and could have converted on some of the opportunities
that they had.
- Oh yeah.
- No, no, no, no, I will have to do with the Oilers,
colored glasses, pod calls in, hit a post,
and dry side all hit, I think pod calls in his leg
in front of the net.
- Yeah, Toastata, thanks.
I'm just kidding.
- Do you say, you call him Toastata?
- Toastata, I'm sorry.
- I did some research post game on Michael Postav.
His trajectory over the past three years
has been fucking fascinating.
I say, has been like, I've been keeping up with it
and it turned, it was fascinating to read last night
when I was catching up.
So he's a 24 year old check gold tender
who three years ago was in the check second league,
was really good in the check second league,
went up to the check extra league,
was awesome there, had a game seven shut out
to help them win the championship
in the extra league of her burno, I believe,
was his team.
Then he was signed as an undrafted free agent
by the Red Wings.
They put him in the AHL last year
and then he set the single season records
for the Grand Rapids Griffins for goals against
and save percentage, never allowed more than three goals
in any of his 23 starts.
He started the year this year,
a 4-0 with a 954 save percentage in the AHL.
So like they had to call them up.
Yes, like this dude over the last,
this dude over the last three, four years
at every stop that he's been has been the fucking truth
and has basically forced a call up
and now has arrived in the NHL
and has really impressed in his first start.
So I might be a fucking post-Ava guy.
I'm a post-Ava guy and this is after me checking
and confirmed expected goals were three for the Oilers.
He allowed three goals.
So like I said, solid, but I'm just into him
based off of hearing all this now.
- Yeah, like straight up underdog story
and has been unbelievable.
It has never had a save percentage in any professional season
underneath like 915, 910, something like that.
Has been really good.
- Ryan Kraus in the chat says
I'm seeing Jordan Bitington parallels.
- Yeah, except he's not a fucking asshole.
As far as we know so far.
- And as a check goalie. - Who doesn't like a check goalie?
I didn't know that he was check until you said,
what's his first name?
- Michael, but with Noe, it's just M-I-C-H-A-L.
- Ah, that's pretty check, check in.
- That's a, that's a good one.
- Yeah, shut up Michael post-Ava.
What a stud.
- Makes sense that they would trade Kosa
because we were talking about,
well is it gonna be Kosa?
Is it gonna be Tray Augustine?
- Well, like they did.
- We did not know Michael post-Ava.
- I was gonna say, they had to trade Kosa,
but I wonder if this did factor in,
like they just literally had to trade him
or put him on the NHL roster
and they weren't gonna put him on the NHL roster.
So they had to trade Kosa.
What's Augustine doing?
Is he still the guy in the NHL?
Probably turn it up.
And if he's not, it's because it's harder
to play goalie than the NHL.
- No, according to my share of my post-Ava, yeah.
- Not if you're a stud like Michael post-Ava,
I do wanna surprise you Pete with a fun little video.
We've got freshly on dry saddle content.
- I did see that last night.
- Fuck you did?
- Yeah.
- Okay, well let's play it anyway for the audience.
This is from Roman, Jed Lika of Nova Sport TV.
- Jack Eichel and Brad Martian.
- Yes.
I'm making David and stall yes, would you have gotten these bolts so far I've I've nailed
I mean I was in lockstep with the entire time including the the hold-up here. Yeah, yeah, and this one I thought was one
Got me. No, I didn't know the hardest one. Yeah, look at the eyes
Look into the eyes look at the hands. They're dry from Toronto. Oh
Newlander. Yes, Willie is the best one
Sit and celebrate yes, good. I
Don't know what I want to do with that Matthews McKinnon one, but I'm gonna. Oh, you know what maybe I'll I'm gonna get
One of this Sebastian aha made up and put it back there. Yeah, please
Yeah, I was I was in lockstep with him in that experience at every stage including only being tripped up by Willie Newlander
Oh, you were tripped up by it. Yeah, I was like that's pasta and who yeah, maybe it's because like
I see David Posternock and I think of Willie and me lander because
Everything with them is yeah, you don't have to explain it
What they're they're they're just thickest thieves. They are thickest thieves
Those are really good. Yeah, so Augustine by the way five games played 292 gold against average and I'm just straight 90
98% that's clean. It's he got post-sovomogged. That's a I mean
Fucking Tristan Jari got post-sovomogged. Well Tristan Jari happens to the best. Jari
I'm mocked at everywhere he steps who hasn't been
Yeah, post-sov has got that good. Yeah, I mean I mean I can't believe it
But like I'm gonna start watching the fucking Red Wings every night every time the Red Wings play the Oilers
I mean that game by the way last night was the worst fucking hockey I wanted to die watching that that
Because like I said that the Oilers run 17 minutes without a shot on goal
They when McDayden dry saddle pod calls and weren't on the ice the Oilers did apps of fucking looting nothing
Which is a get like I'm not trying to downplay post-sov uh getting a win in his first start but like really
was not the
Toughest lift except one the best players in the world were on the other so shout out him
I heard from many Oilers fans that this is a typical Oilers behavior that they always lose to a gold time making his first career start
Yes, and Emmett Finney always goes off against them. So whenever I watch the Oilers play the Red Wings
I'm like
Yeah, man red Wings kind of nice with it. Emmett Finney watch out for him
And then I watch other Red Wings games and like I don't know if he plays. I
Do think I said this last night. I don't know if it's a hot take or controversial
But I think last night was the worst slate of the season so far. It was like God bless Matt Vagridden and
Shouts out to Sarah Palin because that was really sad at the Rangers game crying for the tribute to
Loving for Rondu Gay and then James Rimer giving up his sixth goal of the night immediately afterwards
I'll say this is just a terribly depressing experience at MSG tonight. Yeah, so really just a
Horrible night of hockey. How did the Timberwolves do Sean? They lost an overtime to the
Cavs so they are now three oh and one worst night. I think I'm just gonna I think I want to really do that
I want to ingratiate myself to the overtime loss to the one in good. Yeah, 100 percent
I want to ingratiate myself on to you of Twitter and just be like one of those people who keeps like their teams record in their Twitter name
Yeah, so I'm just like Sean parentheses T. Wolves 301 and any time someone calls me out on it
Just ask like I don't know what they're talking about. It's like they they got a point
That turns me up so much with Major League Soccer because they have wins losses and draws and
You get three points for a win and it just throws me way out of whack
Shout out Ryan Worsoski. He's not always our favorite guy
Oh, I think I'm always entertained by him. We have nothing against him
It's he's probably not always the shark's players favorite guy. Yeah, and especially he's not always shark's fans favorite guy
Like when we said that we were gonna talk about him today people again, no
People especially on the everything app
If if somebody if they're like actually is something wrong with the person
You need to clarify why you don't like I wish there was like a different font that you could use for like
Oh, we don't like this person
For like joky reasons or like we don't like this person because they're bad and they've got problematic stuff going on because
Folks you tweet about it the exact same way. Yeah, yeah, where like that's a bad person don't talk about this guy
Just like it people hate fucking Ryan Worsoski. They talk about him like he's a bad person and they just like get that
Don't talk about him. He shouldn't be coaching my young my my sweet precious boys. Get him all get him away from the young guys on our team
We're photoshopping mcdavid out of the picture of
Celebrini and
Layla Edwards, which is absolutely cool to do funny, but people are like
Taking like hashtag that man out of this picture. I'm like, what the fuck didn't make it. Oh my god
And it's just like I know you don't fuck the oilers
Yeah, that's different though. There's like you might you can extrapolate how far you want
But like people don't like the oilers for someway value they just don't like Worsoski because they think he's a bad coach
But they act like he's an actual terrorist
Yeah, I mean the internet basically has become like you white you been affleck. I don't like you you Netanyahu
I mean
Not to fucking go there. Yeah, but I don't that was not me opening the door for that
But like I saw some shit about zeev bouyum yesterday where I was like let's let's not acknowledge zeev bouyum as an NHL player because he's been to Israel
And I'm like, yo, that's a fucking child that you don't know
Yeah, I don't have that conversation. Yeah
All right
But Ryan Worsoski confirmed not Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed better than
Benjamin Netanyahu
Okay
Lines from yesterday's practice. Sean hit me with that shang
Yeah
Sharks lines of practice lots of changes
Stenberg celebrating Smith
You've our Stenberg first line. Love it. Marchment Mesa graph
Nurse truba
Dickinson
Kessel ring aka six seven dick ring
We are so fucking back
This is huge. We did it though. Our prayers have been answered. I don't I don't even know if I was praying for
Stenberg celebrity Smith
But now that it's been delivered to me
I am absolutely saying yes, I'll take seconds
The the dick ring pairing is obviously what we've been waiting for yeah
To get both at the same time we are eaten good
That I cannot wait for this game and I was thinking yesterday. I was like you know what
I've enjoyed watching other teams. You know, I'm watching my Bruins
My flames
Well, so I've been checking out I haven't tracking the Kraken who doesn't that's just me uh
That's just me following a trend
But I was like remember last year DJ you
Watched every Sabers game one last time you sat down to watch a good Sabers game
And I didn't check the schedule. I just moved on with my life and watch something else and then I saw tonight's late
I mean the Sabers hosting these sharks
With and apparently dick ring did uh got some shifts against the Bruins on saturday
I didn't catch that and I didn't notice that so this is the start of six seven dick ring. There you go
I mean, it's I feel like
You got to get the whole game. You got to get a whole game for it to truly be the beginning
You got to be potentially announced as you have to be credited with the win as we said yes
Got to go for for innings. Is that it? No, it's not like that. I don't know rules are long
Uh, but he and the chat said to like
Uh, that's what I was gonna say like the Sabers fans would like to sit down and watch a good Sabers game too
Well, hold on. No, no that's not true. The Sabers have played a lot of good games
They just keep losing them and by good games. I mean they suck for about 50 minutes
And then they come back from a two goal lead in the third period and then they lose an overtime or a shootout. So they've been experiences
Uh, I can't necessarily say they've been full like
Tape to tape full good games though. You know, who has the the worst goal differential in the eastern conference this season
For teams for teams if it is this is going to be on some like crook praise off if you're not leading the league in goals
What the fuck did you do?
If it isn't the Philadelphia Flyer it is
But the level of Sabers have the second worst goal differential in the eastern conference
That's pretty shocking to me. I didn't think that would be the case
Yeah, they have a minus 10 goal differential so far this season
They've lost like a bunch of games and overtime and shootout. So
Whatever man wait and frocks lying to come back and then the tandem will be full
Will be strong again. The sharks officially have our attention. Uh, that is
damn certain. I don't know if it's gonna go well, but I will be sat. Yes, yes. And not the last time
this week, there will be six, seven dick ring talk, okay? We can tell you that again, a couple of
teas. I was gonna say, like, how far do we want to, we don't want to figure out, we don't want to
hold. We don't want to remix this to the point where we get scooped. They're not gonna figure it out.
Okay. And we know all the hometown remix stuff already anyway. I mean, we know everything about
everything. It's just I did. You can't hold it. You can't hold on to it so long that then people start
putting it out there for you. That's the, I feel like the NHL has a really chunked the hometown
remix thing. Well, you want a couple of leaks to come out because that gets you excited. But,
yeah, they're starting to come fast. I have improved my behavior a little bit. The account,
the underscore jersey nerds put out a bunch of like, it says exclusive. The jersey nerds can
confirm with near certainty the designs for 20 of the NHL's hometown remix jerseys. And they put
out, they put a bunch of like mockups of the jerseys. Respect to me. I just sent a DM and was like,
hey, a couple of these are wrong. DJ has graduated from publicly saying not it. Not even close.
Now he's just in the DM. See, now he's in people's houses yelling, not it. I'm going to see them.
I think that's worse behavior. No, I want them to be right. Yeah, but instead of standing on their
front lawn, you're now, you're now kicking down their door, standing at their bedside yelling, not it.
I'm not yelling, not it. I'm saying they've already put it out there. But like, I don't know if maybe
they want to follow up like, hey, the star is one and the senators one looks a little different. Yeah,
a lot, a lot of these have a lot of these have the right idea. Closer than anybody's got into this
point. Jay fresh just tweeted the mockup that that account made of the Canadians ones and the
Oilers ones. The Canadians ones I can say that's what they look like and the Canadians ones are
ass. And Jay fresh put out Canadians ones and Oilers ones said two absolute stinkers. Wow,
Reebok edge level bad. Jay fresh. You fucking kidding me. You're comparing the Oilers one to
the Canadians one. They're both. I mean, they're both awful. They're both bad. The Oilers one
is the Canadian one in Badgers. He picked two badgers. He picked it. It's just that dark mode is
better than light mode at all times. He picked a horrible one and one that no, I tell you what?
No, that Oilers one is going to be fucking awful in in action because it is just all the same
color. But that's what I like that the that's horrible for TV. I know. Yeah, yeah, you're right in
action, but I think that the the Oilers ones going to have some good wearability. You're going to
fucking laugh when you're watching an oilers game and you can't tell which player is which.
You're going to look like a fucking construction worker. I don't need numbers to I don't know if
you guys know this. And I don't know if you all have the same thing. I could be fine if players
didn't wear numbers during games. If I as long as I have a prosperous thing to say, are you serious?
Yes, you can't tell from watching the player who it is. I mean, I can tell when I'm watching and
like I'm looking when it's in the middle of action, you want an immediate identifier of who it is.
Oh, yeah, it's definitely helpful, but yeah, I'm sure that I could like figure it out, but I'd
have to be processing the entire fucking time. See, and also broad. Certainly would not agree with you.
Maybe it was a b-rider thing, but like watching above, I would tell players from their shoulders
and their handedness more than their numbers. Just quicker. Yeah, no, I'm not, I'm not trying to live
that life. Maybe it's easier than I think, but I don't want to find out. And on TV, if you
can't tell the player by the number, it's a bad jersey. It's straight up. I think that is the
baseline of what a jersey jersey purpose is. It is to tell you the number and identify the player.
And if it doesn't do that, it is a fucking terrible jersey.
Well, let's see how these are in action before we give the final deliberation, but I'll say of
the ones that the jersey nerds posted these mockups, which again, almost bang on, not completely.
I would say the Canadian's one is terrible. And the only other terrible one there,
and it's not even that bad is just the rangers one for being so boring.
The rangers one is boring, but it's a rangers jersey. So, kings one rocks, penguins one,
I've absolutely come around on. It's insane. It is, it is truly insane. It's on gene-to-potering
inspired. Okay. Sean, give me the slate. Buddy. It's a good slate tonight.
It's weird though. You know, people on the numbers thing, as Pete kind of acknowledged there,
it might be a don't knock it till you try it type of situation. You know, because like from above,
I couldn't always see the numbers super clearly. So I add an easier time.
Well, that's a different conversation. If you can't see the numbers, then you kind of,
then you have to. But being able to see the numbers is always going to be easier than not seeing
the numbers. I'm just saying I'm not some kind of savantier with like unbelievable perception.
So the fact that in granted, I did this as a job every day for like seven years. So maybe it's
something that I eventually learned to do. But if I could do it, I think that everybody else can do it.
I mean, I think there are definitely certain players that are easier to identify if they took
their numbers away. I'd be like, oh, that's Nikita's adorov. He just cross-checked somebody
in the back and is going to the box. I think there are certain identifiers that are easier, but
saying that like your life wouldn't change at all. The numbers were removed is crazy, the energy
of what was being said. I don't need numbers. Just wear white t-shirts and my life doesn't change.
Sagan and Horton, my first year, would confuse me because they were 19 and 18. And maybe that's what
started it because those two look absolutely nothing alike, but they were both. I'll give you that.
There are similar numbers and they're both right shots. So I, Paul Bessonetta, to change his
number. Oh, because Cindy Crossy's parents were like, you're a terrible player and your number is
too close to my sons. It looks, it looks too much like my sons. All right, kicking it off,
flyers and that wonderful, goal differential. There's hosting the Columbus Blue Jack at the 7 p.m.
Eastern United States and Canada. We jump from one seven o'clock game to the Hurricanes hosting the
Bruins. And what's that? ESPN? Yeah. On ESPN. Yeah, famously. They made a graphic about it.
Eastern, oh, right. Yeah. In an Eastern conference final matchup, I would say. Preview.
Two of those teams in the East. Yeah, anything could happen. It's in a season. It'll be Bruins versus
somebody could be a spooky one. It's all I know. Blackhawks host the Red Hot LA Kings who look to win
yet again. The, the Blues will host the Canadians in a Logan Mayu bowl. Oh, yeah. Yeah. How about
that? A Zach Bulldock bowl. A, the Preds host the Islanders at 8 p.m. This is a crazy structure.
Devils at the stars in a Michael Ryder bowl. Second time I mentioned Michael Ryder. Confirmed Connor
Halibuk debut. Oh, yep. Wow. That's great. Keep it going, Sean. This is how many, or they're
one more at the clock. Six eight o'clock games. Is that right? Yeah. Why me? It's a crazy structure, man.
Jets host the Panthers at 8 p.m. The also shut out. Check it out. I got the stew Heritage Classic,
Jersey. Hell yeah. It's so nice. Absolutely crazy. The, the mammoth hosts the wild at nine
Julian Moore voice. Ten o'clock brings us the Golden Knights inviting 20 something more people
into their arena because the senators will be there. That's at 10 ducks host the connox in a,
Dr. Sous bowl. But, it's a Dr. Sous bowl. The ducks host the connox. What's that? That's good. Here rhymes.
Oh, ducks and connox. I like that. A Dr. Sous bowl. Okay. That's again. I was a bad person.
And then what a talk? What a talk? Nice. Sean just throwing out. That guy was a bad person.
It's the best. Ryan Kessler or Dr. Sous bowl. Dr. Sous. Well, I definitely. Was Dr. Sous a bad person?
Oh, yeah. That guy sucked. I'm pretty sure that he was like a massive anti-Semite. He was like a
other problem at things. Dr. Sous is not a good guy. I don't think that was like common. Walt Disney.
Yeah. Walt Disney was bad. Walt Disney was also bad. I'll number. Yeah. Just Google.
Actually, take it to the everything app. Just type in Dr. Sous and bad.
Uh-oh. During World War II, he took a brief hiatus from children's literature.
to illustrate political cartoons.
- That's not a good sign.
- I don't like doing that.
It was not.
- He was not doing it.
- He was not making art cartoons.
- I use not making cartoons about the Europeans
on the bad side of World War II.
Let's, I'll put it that way.
- Dr. Seuss.
- Get fuck, man.
- Sharks, closest sabers.
- Hell of a tuck.
- Oh, he also cheated on his dying wife.
That's right, that's right.
That was the other thing I had heard.
- Who had cancer recording a chat?
That's tough.
- All right, we're going to anti-Semitism now in the chat.
So Sean, if you could clean that up.
- Wack, some of that folks, Jesus.
All right, super chats, shall we?
- Yeah, let's do it.
- He also cheated on his dying wife.
- Yeah, you see that.
- Sorry, I was looking at horrible shit in the chat.
Loadbearing Wokenness says there's always time
for Pat McAfee lashings.
Tom Wilson's lawyer says congrats
to the hottest team in hockey.
The Calgary Flames for raking the Leafs,
#FlamersUnite.
Loadbearing Wokenness says Pete's incredible shirt
has forced an important question
without straight T.O. lab of the three of you.
Who is Estee, who is Danielle, and who is Alana?
- Alana, 'cause I'm baby.
- Oh yeah, Pete could be.
- Yeah, but Sean owns something called baby.
- I don't know, I've got some dad to baby.
- I would say I'm a mix of Estee and Danielle.
Sean, you know who these people are?
- Nope.
- Talking about the Heim sisters.
All right, love your life.
Friends of the show with the Heim sisters.
Guy in front of me in the library has a Bjork jersey
and on my way to Uni saw a truck with jets plates
in two habs flags, hashtag, love my city, love my people.
Jay Walter Hypan says, "The thing about Babcock
is he's got lifeless eyes, black eyes,
like a doll's eyes."
(laughs)
- That's Alana.
I don't know why saying eyes there three times.
- Speaking of eyes, Sean Horkoff was on the broadcast last night
interim general manager of the Detroit Red Wings.
I did not know.
I forget what it's called, but he has the thing
where you have two different color eyes.
- Yeah, I forget what that's called.
- Shout out Max Sherser.
- The Max Sherser, yeah.
- That shit's cool.
Bart has battalion says, "I like how Edmonton saw
"how San Jose and Abs are developing graph and hues
"and are like, let's not do that
"with their own college star, Isaac Howard."
I'll say Isaac Howard hasn't been amazing,
but he scored last night.
- It's what a goal.
- This shit drove me crazy after the game
in the press conference.
Babcock was asked about playing Howard up in the lineup
and he says, "No one just gives you that stuff.
"You've got to earn it."
Okay, yeah, whatever.
But everybody in your lineup has hurt,
so maybe move him up.
And then he gets asked about Howard again.
And he talks about how when you have the puck,
who has it next?
And I think that's a cool kind of like mericism
of like when you've got the puck,
does your team have it after you?
Or does the other team?
And he points out that Leon Drysaddle
is really good in that regard.
Leon Drysaddle's a fucking hall of hair brother.
We're asking you to get like anything out of a young player.
And if your complaint is, he's not Leon Drysaddle.
Leon Drysaddle does something better than them.
I'm gonna smash my mug just thinking about this.
Mike Babcock's driving me crazy right now.
Stuart Skinner's sexy stash says to correct Pete,
it is Mick David Drysaddle and Evan Bouchard
who's not a race future 2026, 27 Norris
and a heart and Nobel Prize winner Evan Bouchard.
You're only talking about forwards.
And I agree with you though, where you were saying,
like if you want to have a conversation with these people,
the second you bring up Evan Bouchard being good,
they're gonna lose their minds at you.
So meet idiots where they are.
Bart has battalion says,
Sean, who is struggling for points for Buffalo right now?
Sharks will hook them up tonight.
Don't worry.
Don't two point tonight, book it.
Sean.
Don't have a good game recently.
But I still think a lot of the younger guys
haven't really done a whole lot.
So anybody, I'll take points for anybody.
I just want to say which one?
LA Metro 460 bus says Rangers broadcast
didn't cut away from Byfield and Kemper's win kiss.
James Rimer, see that right now.
Hashtag Go Kings Go.
Perhaps another famous Ranger.
I was gonna say just carrying the torch of being,
but not speak ill of the dead.
And obviously we properly dunked on how insane
Rondu Gays reaction to them losing a pride night game was.
- He would have loved James Rimer.
- His tweet seemed very mad at woke.
- Yeah.
But he seems like he was directing his anger at woke
at the gay community.
- Well, he was mad.
He was like, why are we having a. Obviously it was homophobic and everything.
But like Rimer's thing, shades of gray, neither good.
Bart has battalion says, you think Bill says,
Quinn will stay guaranteed.
I hope he talks that way.
- Pierre Lebron in the chat.
- Better than some of the other ways I've heard him.
- Yeah, what if he said this?
Stuart Skinner's sexy stash says,
"Isles retired 91 already for Butch Goring."
Yes, correct.
Always on its stews.
Damien Dunn says, "UK fan here originally from heated rivalry.
I went to Toronto for three days
and saw my first hockey game, Leaser's The Savers."
On the 15th, then visited Hamilton
for heated rivalry filming locations.
That sounds like the coolest trip in the world.
Dr. Tolsky's goalie says, "Bread's good goalies.
Brandon Bussey looking at a mashup of Bussey and Kachekov."
So Psylantro says, "Going to my first hockey game tonight
for Habs versus Blues.
We're on my Dobege jersey to work today.
Please start him and have met some lovely hockey fans."
- Yeah, it's sneaky thing about hockey fans.
Some of them are lovely.
- They are.
Some of them are not, but.
- Hashtag not all hockey fans?
- We can fix them.
- Some of them are lovely.
- Heterochromia, by the way, is the eye thing.
- Heterochromia.
- We don't do heteroes on this podcast.
We should painfully hetero.
- Yeah, I was gonna say,
you've been not according to The New York Times.
- That's true.
- All right, well, hopefully the slate's good tonight.
We deserve it after last night.
- You didn't give a grade.
- Oh, the slate is tonight minus.
- Why?
- There's so many eights.
- I mean, let me.
- We get a, ooh, maybe there's, maybe there.
- Maybe it's the first B+ because it's 8/8.
- Maybe they're keying in on the eights
because we're getting sixes and sevens.
- Oh, very good.
Oh, I mean, this saber shark's game
could be the Pod Colson Dry Saddle McDavid Line
of slate submissions, where like,
it's the highest scoring slate in hockey
because of one game.
I mean, Bruins Hurricanes, very good.
- Especially if they wear opposite uniforms.
They should do that.
- Devil stars, very good.
You know, we might have something here.
Wild man, but there's some really good games here.
- There are a lot of really good games
and even the bad games are like,
they're kind of evenly matched.
So, I mean, the ducks conucks game rhymes.
- Yeah, and both those teams are not very good.
- Yeah.

Summary:
FAQs
A 'Jari' occurs when a team allows a goal on the first shot of the game. A 'double Jari' means two goals were allowed on the first shots. It's a rare and often criticized occurrence, especially if it happens early in a game.
Matthew Gridden is mentioned as a player potentially carrying the 'flames' due to his recent scoring form, with five goals and seven points in his last five games. However, the speaker acknowledges Devin Cooley as a more obvious contender.
ESPN posted a Halloween graphic showing a jersey swap between Sebastian Ajo and David Posternock, which fans found disrespectful and inappropriate. The speaker expresses strong frustration, nearly tweeting at ESPN, and calls the content 'bullshit' and 'hate-filled'.
The 'gritty' is a goal celebration where a player performs a physical, often dramatic, gesture after scoring. The discussion highlights that it's sometimes used inappropriately or at inopportune times, such as early in the second period, to avoid giving the opposing team a chance to respond.
The speaker criticizes Pat McAfee for his behavior, calling him paranoid and unnecessarily aggressive. He suggests McAfee may be suffering from mental health issues and should take a break, noting his recent behavior at a Utah event was extreme and irrational.
The Oilers have lost two consecutive games at home, marking their first such collapse all season. The discussion highlights how their depth is lacking, with only a few players like Connor McDavid, Dr. Isadl, and Mick David driving the team’s success, while others are underperforming.
