The Players We Can’t Wait to See on New Teams. Plus, Which Star Will Finally Get a Ring?
1h 5m 15s
The episode covers major NBA roster moves and team developments, including Klay Thompson’s signing with the Miami Heat as a shooting complement to Giannis, DeMar DeRozan’s arrival with the Nuggets, and the significant injury setback for Shaden Sharp with the Trail Blazers. It also examines the ownership changes in the Minnesota Timberwolves, raising questions about long-term team stability. The discussion delves into controversial claims about Peyton Watson’s contract negotiations, highlighting how media narratives often amplify small details. The hosts emphasize the importance of depth, effort, and underappreciated role players—like Chris Vernon and Max Strus—over traditional star power. They stress that team success often hinges on bench reliability and defensive intensity. The episode also touches on broader themes of ownership, financial decisions, and player performance, using real-world examples to illustrate how basketball teams navigate uncertainty. Through a mix of news, analysis, and personal insight, the show underscores how effort, adaptability, and strategic planning define the future of the game.

Welcome to the Mismatch.
I'm Chris Farnon, and joining me today is every week
from TheRigger.com is Dave Jacoby.
Jacoby!
I'm in Los Angeles now.
So please address me as Los Angeles Dave Jacoby.
Los Angeles Dave Jacoby.
I thought I was really, I had my fingers crossed
that you were going to be broadcasting from an RV tonight.
Isn't this the RV trip week? No?
Bro, let me tell you something.
I got here on Saturday.
We're recording this Monday night.
Every second of the last 48 hours has been disastrous
with my family.
Every single member of the family hates each other.
Every single one.
There's like 17, because it's exponential
when you have six people in the family.
The baby's sick, so everybody hates her,
and she hates everybody.
Everybody else hates her.
So we haven't even gotten to RV week yet.
And it's a disaster.
No, RV week is next week.
It's a disaster already.
The Jacoby.
The Jacoby family trip is off to a horrible start.
It can only get worse or better.
I mean, oh, my God.
Now I understand why you've been at that studio for three hours.
I might stop the RV and just get out and just walk away.
Just be like, you guys figure it out.
A 13-year-old can probably drive.
I said, hey, man, we're recording at night.
You're like, I'm already at the studio.
I was like, oh, boy.
I got to prep for the show.
I take the show very seriously.
Got to prep.
Oh, yeah.
All right.
We have had news since we last spoke.
So we've got some former stars that are now moving places.
First, Klay Thompson is going to be playing with the Miami Heat,
along with Giannis down in Miami.
Two years, $11.5 million.
Got a buyout with the Dallas Mavericks.
Do we like the fit for Klay Thompson in Miami?
Once upon a time, seemed like we were going to think,
like maybe he could be the Ray Allen role on that old.
Miami Heat team.
Maybe that was the portion of his career he's going into.
I guess he'll have a chance in that uniform.
I love the price if I'm the Heat.
And I love the role if I'm Klay Thompson.
This is a win-win from everybody.
You know, I think that he signed up to go to the Mavs to, you know,
hit corner threes and wing threes that Luka Doncic just handed him.
You know what I mean?
And obviously, we know what happened from there.
So I feel like this is a win-win for everybody.
I do like the fit in that sense.
You know, I always wonder, like, how much did he get in the buyout?
He's willing to take this.
And I looked up his stats.
Like, he shot.
He shot 39% almost from three last year.
He's going to be able to hit threes until he's 90 years old.
If Bam and Giannis are on the court at the same time,
you're going to need some shooting.
Oh, yeah.
And especially, like, I mean, they got some.
They got some.
Bobby Portis is there.
Also, Tim Hardaway Jr. can knock down threes.
Hell, yeah.
And space the floor, right?
Oh, no.
This is just drive and kick to old guys that can knock down open threes.
Yeah.
And since they shot a three, they can get back on defense in time.
They've got, like, I think it's the numbers I don't have in front of you.
I saw some stat where it's like they got, like, four guys that have shot 40%.
Yeah.
Super slow time of the year.
So we are going to take on as much news as we possibly can.
One by one by one by one.
The next one.
DeMar DeRozan to Denver.
I don't think this quelled any kind of upset feelings that a Nuggets fan would have about losing Peyton Watson.
But it did kind of come back to.
It was like, here's the Peyton Watson five-team trade.
And then, like, a day later, it was like, oh, yeah, we shot DeMar DeRozan one year, $3.5 million.
And DeMar DeRozan, again, another guy, you still get a bucket.
I just don't know how this really fits with the Jokic spacing.
Yeah.
All right.
Let me ask you a follow-up question to that.
DeMar DeRozan can definitely get a bucket.
He's 18.4 points per game last season.
But how does DeMar DeRozan get those buckets?
I mean.
Usually, he's a mid-range assassin.
And he dribbled it a couple times.
He caught it.
He works his man.
And he gets a pull-up, and he hits it.
I mean, he shot his best true shooting of his career last year.
I just don't know how that works in a Denver offense.
Now, the other thing is, he's been on these rat Sacramento teams.
So, if he's still got juice left, you might get the better and best version of him.
He has now played with a lot of different players in a lot of different.
Scenarios and systems.
So, I am more.
I lean more towards the, especially the older player that is still wanting to play, can adjust.
And he'll figure out how to be effective with Denver.
And the price.
I mean, this is nothing.
That's the thing.
It's really what it is.
It's value.
This is like.
Yes.
A lot of stores I go to.
Rag and Bone is an example, right?
I like their clothing.
Yep.
When I walk in that store, I find the first person I can find that works there.
Yep.
And I ask them if they work there.
Because I've made the mistake before.
So, I ask them if they work there.
And I say, where is the sale rack?
And I go to the sale rack.
And that's the only place I shop.
Because everything else is just too expensive.
There's no value.
And I feel like, at this price, DeMar DeRozan, at $3.9 million, is much better value than
Peyton Watson at $20-whatever.
Well, and also, you just need to have a release valve for the other two.
You know, that's where they really missed the Porter thing last year.
Obviously, Gordon had his, you know, his injury problems or whatever.
But it's like, you got to have another guy that can go get you a reliable bucket.
And in the absence of Michael Porter Jr., you know, there's so much that is just put
on it.
It's Murray Jokic, Murray Jokic.
Okay, who's the other guy that can get me a bucket?
I'm at least confident that DeRozan's the kind of guy that is another guy that can get
you a bucket if you need it.
I mean, how many games, more regular season than playoffs, have you seen the Murray,
Murray Jokic pick and roll just absolutely sing in the first half?
And the coaches go in and they make adjustments and have to like, we're throwing four people
at this thing.
And then, then that's when it's going to be like, all right, DeMar, you're going to
have seven feet of base when you catch the ball.
You're not going to shoot a three because you're not good at it, but you can get yourself
a mid-range base in that space and your abilities.
I could see that one working out.
Honestly, I could see DeMar DeRozan being better than what I think people's expectation
is so low about what, you know, what his fit is.
And obviously the bigger story is, are they giving Jokic a chance to win during these prime
years, which is a story that goes, it's going to go on everywhere.
I mean, it feels like all of these teams have a very finite window to be able to, you know,
achieve the highest levels.
And then they end up having to pay everybody and then we move on and now it's just hard.
It's hard.
I think a lot of the blame has people point at the front office and the move they
made, but really it comes down to sort of like health and fit.
And we all thought that Cam Johnson would fit better.
Like put yourself a year ago today.
Didn't you think Cam Johnson would fit better than he did last season?
And Aaron Gordon, like when he is healthy, like that Murray Jokic pick and roll with
him in the dunker spot.
We've seen it be successful for year after year after year.
He just wasn't available.
Outstanding player who is a perfect fit with them and was not available.
You're right.
The Wolves had an ownership change.
I mean, this has been the weirdest summer.
And when that one came down, I was like, what, what is going on?
Mark's dad, who is buying into the Timberwolves as the majority owner and is
buying Mark Loray's stake in the team.
Mark Loray, who is now going to focus on his own company while still holding a
minority stake.
A-Rod is bumping up his stake in the team, but this guy is going to be the
majority owner of both.
The Wolves and the Lynx and the Lynx are like the best team in the WNBA and the
Wolves, you know, have Anthony Edwards and have now LaMelo Ball on their team.
When this came down, the first thing was the Lakers just went for 12.5 and this
one was just valued at 4.5.
So that's pretty big gulf between those.
But more importantly, you know, I was.
was I was covering
the Grizzlies wolves playoff series a couple of years back when all that
Glenn Taylor crap was going down and Jonathan Krasinski was covering it.
And, you know, Laurie and a rod were at the games,
but Glenn Taylor was at the games and then Glenn Taylor tried to get,
you know,
ended up taking them like there was lawsuits and arbitration and all this
stuff that will try to do anything he could to get out of that deal that he
had signed with them to sell the team when he finally found a buyer,
finally sold the team.
And then valuations of these teams went to the moon and he was like,
no, no, no, no, no, no.
I went back and look to Kobe that deal,
which ended up being constituted in June of 2025.
Okay.
Wow.
So that is a little over a year ago.
It was the first headline.
I,
I mean,
it took like three or four years.
It 1.5 billion.
But just imagine wrestling this thing for what,
what is it?
Three years.
And then a year later being like,
yeah,
I'm out.
Well,
it's another crazy flip.
Like we were used to flip this house.
Like this is flipped.
It's NBA team.
The guy got in for a 1.5 valuation.
And a year later,
he's like,
all right,
you know what?
I still have a part in it.
Cause it's fun.
But like,
nah,
I'll go ahead and sell my part at a 4.5 billion valuation.
There's a,
I mean,
sometimes I was talking to a friend of mine,
shout to Dietrich and I was like the last few weeks I've been talking about
sovereign funds and public equity and sort of insurance companies.
And I invested 2 billion into myself and only only declare that.
But I actually,
it was like,
you know what?
I enjoy basketball.
I know.
I know.
I like basketball.
It's just like,
you know what?
Let's just move on.
If you want,
this isn't the financial times.
This is the mismatch.
Like,
well,
okay.
All right.
Hold on.
I'm just going to spin this into the reason this matters for basketball is
because what we talked about with Dan Wikey with the Lakers,
you're seeing it now with Portland.
And then this is the great unknown with what this guy is going to be in
Minnesota.
Is this the guy that's like,
I don't care about the tax.
I'm trying to win it all costs because it did.
It seemed like Laurie and a rod,
you know,
this is why they moved off of towns.
This is why the keel Alexander Walker left or whatever.
They were attempting to be much more fiscally responsible and not be paying
out.
And so we'll feed,
we'll see what kind of owner this guy is,
but honestly,
it may determine whether or not we ever see Anthony Edwards in a finals
or not.
Yeah.
And we'll talk about lamella later,
but what they did say is that Tim Connolly staying Matt Lloyd,
saying Chris Finch is staying right.
And one thing I found interesting is,
is where is it?
Stads wife,
Elisa status expected to become the Timberwolves governor.
I don't know what that means,
but shot to her.
I mean,
she's the most powerful person in the organization.
This is the,
the genie bus roll.
Yeah.
Good for her.
I good for her.
I know nothing about her.
So here's a basketball story.
Horrible news for the port of the trailblazers.
The aforementioned with losing Shaden sharp for six months,
like,
nothing is worse than losing a player for six months in August.
Yeah,
of course.
Like,
I mean,
he didn't even,
he didn't even get to start the season.
And then you find out one of your best players is out for six
months.
You know,
we haven't even gotten a training camp.
If you've been paying attention to Shaden sharp,
he's a very athletic,
high ceiling potential player.
And like even this deep in his career,
which is what three or four years.
It's like,
I still can see him sort of putting it together with the right
situation.
I can see him taking a leap.
And I,
I feel like this is one of those.
It's been that way for a couple of years,
but it feels like if he just put it together for a year,
he is a big contractor,
a big good situation waiting for him.
And the,
this setback will set that back even further.
That's the part.
It's like,
it's not just getting hurt.
That's awful for any basketball player,
but it's someone in sort of a pivotal point in their career that
they have something to prove.
It's even worse.
Also at best,
a team that is more than likely trying to,
to compete for a play in spot.
Like they are certainly.
Yeah.
And,
and,
and this is a,
a major blow.
I mean,
Dame and drew are there.
So it's not like some like huge hole that need to fill in the
roster rotation,
but I,
I liked the,
I just,
there are moments last year when he really played well,
though.
I mean,
it is a mess.
You're going to have to,
they're going to have to flip one of these guys and get some
wings there now.
Cause if you know,
that is the one shot,
you know,
I guess silver lining is,
is when a stuff like this happens,
you,
you can at least address it,
right?
You get into the season.
It's like,
okay,
we're not going to have a small forward for six months.
We better figure this out.
Cause Jeremy grants now with the Grizzlies too.
And Shaden sharps now out for six months.
So it's like,
I'm just saying they don't have,
because I'm wondering what percentage of our audience is just
like,
wait,
Jeremy grants with the Grizzlies.
Yeah.
Well,
and Matisse,
Matisse,
Diable's a Laker.
I love it.
I mean,
they don't,
I'm saying they don't have,
like,
it's like,
that's a lot,
a lot of Camara.
I love Camara and,
and a bunch of little guards,
but you're not,
you give it to Shane sharp for seven,
seven seconds left in the shot.
Clock is different than giving it to Camara.
Hey,
you know what?
He should just do the,
it's look,
the guy's on a one-year contract anyway,
who gives a shit?
Do the old J right Villanova for guard thing,
you know,
Scotty Reynolds and Alan Ray and that crew just go scoot,
drew jaw,
Dame time Lord,
and just change,
the league just go or why I'm so excited for him.
Mike and Nori press conferences.
He's so entertaining.
Oh yes.
He'll sign a one-year deal and be like,
you know what?
If I get screwed by this new owner,
there is a broadcast job just waiting for me.
Well,
the other thing is there's also a assistant coach job available for him
anywhere.
She might make more money broadcasting.
My name.
Oh yes.
He will.
No,
I'm saying this year,
like he's,
he's like a mismatch listener name now,
but I think this year,
Mike and Nori.
Yeah.
He'll go viral a couple of times and they'll catch,
they'll catch the eye of the executives.
And if,
if it really does go South,
he doesn't get another deal.
He'll be,
he'll be right on that Amazon desk.
Yeah.
I mean,
yeah,
they put on a,
what's his day?
The ESPN put on,
what's the guy's name?
Michael Malone.
No,
no,
no,
no.
They're flamed out with the jets.
The Belichick guy.
Oh,
Eric,
Eric something.
What was that guy's name?
Man.
Genius.
No.
Who are you talking about?
Yeah.
Man.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Man.
Genius.
Yeah.
He's now on Fox sports on first is first with our friends,
Nick Wright and Chris Boussard,
Kevin Wiles.
I'm saying they put him on like right out.
I mean,
he's just the jets.
Right.
But I mean,
like we all knew about him and it was like,
yeah,
but I mean,
they did not go back to the NBA or get to go back to the NFL.
Right.
He just ended up becoming a broadcaster as well.
Kind of a gruff guy.
Just like,
just like this Mike and Nori.
Right.
Like kind of a matter of fact,
kind of individual.
All right.
Got a bunch of stuff to get to players that we are most looking forward to
seeing in a new uniform.
So we're breaking this down.
We're each going to pick a star,
a role player,
a one star.
And I still believe in them player.
I just want to set this up for our audience and on our text between
Verno and Jacoby,
I said to him,
I was like,
we have stacked a 90 minute show,
but we have to make this a 45 minute show.
So this is going to be a fast paced,
cover a lot of ground move.
Yes.
Okay.
I just want to let our audience know where I'm at.
He's warning.
He's warning me.
This is,
this is him warning me.
No,
I said that.
He said,
like,
let's,
let's do this quickly.
And I said,
I can do it.
Can you do it?
And you don't believe in me,
man.
I do believe in you.
You're a veteran broadcaster.
No,
you don't,
you don't believe in me.
You've been broadcasting for 55 years.
I just,
I just want you to believe in me,
bro.
I can do this.
The answer is Giannis.
And if you have a different answer,
you're wrong.
Yeah.
We,
we,
I've only ever seen Giannis playing for Milwaukee in a buck's uniform.
Giannis with the heat now.
And if the indication is that since the beginning of time,
if you have a top five player on your team,
you've got a chance to win at the absolute highest level.
We all know his supporting cast stunk in Milwaukee.
The last couple of years,
this supporting cast is underrated.
This was supporting.
If people have devalued,
this supporting cast that he's going to have in Miami.
And I do think he'll be,
he can win.
And I think he will quickly remind people that when you've got one of the
five best players in the world,
you've got a chance.
Yes.
And I think that I believe in,
I won't say heat culture.
I believe in the infrastructure of the front office.
I believe in Spolstra.
They figured out a lot of puzzles in the past,
and this is a puzzle to figure out,
especially when you have,
it's a four mentioned BAM and Giannis on the floor,
but there are guys on the,
on in the rotation that can hit stitch,
catch a two threes,
plenty of them.
And,
you know,
and I love off night and I didn't pick Giannis because I knew you would
pick Giannis.
And I knew you would go first.
This is a gentleman that I picked the star.
Most excited to see in a different uniform is someone that I've loved two
years before,
three years before he was drafted.
It's obviously LaMelo ball for me because I mean,
he just,
when you see that LaMelo ball is playing on,
league pass, it's hard for me to not click on it. It's just hard. I love
watching him play basketball is he the most efficient player does he make the best decisions
is it do I want him on my team is he if I'm a coach do I want to play for me I don't know on
all of those but as a fan watching my television on my couch I love watching it and something about
the duo of him and Anthony Edwards is just so enticing to me that I if I see that Timberwolves
logo click it on also the amount of times that they will you know as my daughter says epic eye
roll they will epic eye roll Rudy Gobert like both of them just like I mean that it's just
going to be means and and and Lomelo is going to hit him literally in the nose with the ball
oh back and back of the head yes everywhere it's going to be amazing highlight don't be best even
that because I think that might
you know I think that might be the best thing to do for him
I just want to see like the first two scrimmages in training camp.
When Rudy Gobert is like, what now?
Yeah, I know.
And he's getting frustrated because he's dropping the ball.

role player I went Lou Dort again I don't know I don't know Lou Dort without a Oklahoma City
Thunder uniform on but I think we learned from last year that guys like Lou Dort they can really
they can change cultures you saw it with Dylan Brooks in Phoenix last year and he got an immense
amount of credit for that I think Dort is these try hard guys that like lunch pail bring it every
night I think it permeates your entire roster I think it permeates the guys that are on the floor
it's the same place it's no different in basketball that it is in a workplace right if one guy
is going all out and it matters that much to him you're either going to reach his level or you're
going to feel stupid for not reaching his level and so I am just so used to him being this intense
irritant for Oklahoma City I am fascinated to see it in a different conference and that team has got
a lot of talent on it that atlanta team they've got a bunch of good players and if they turn into
the try hard team to go along with the talent they have i could see them surprising people
and being better than maybe even what the expectation is i'm very upset right now
why that answer is so much better than anything i even considered like i did plus i did it in 30
seconds this is not competitive like we're not trying we're not trying to win this or whatever
i just want to say that like you have it was like it's like i ordered the steak
and the guy next to me was like yeah i'll have a bigger steak with a lobster tail
and the shrimps can't be on the side and the cream smith i'm just like whoa i didn't even
think about that i was even like on my radar that's a great answer thank you is payton watson
a role player i think he is i i yeah he's my he's the guy i got in my in my five-star notebook
right under lou dort i have circled watson in case you took lou dort
yeah i got because i was like is he a role player he the thing is like he is truly a role player
like there are like people that are like they're big nba fans don't know who he is because he didn't
get that much burn with the nuggets we all know that he had that hot streak when there was injuries
around him and if if he could harness he's not going to be asked to do much on this team it's
not like there are certain sort of like you did good in your role at team x and now we're going
to pay you more to play at team y but we expect more from you there are plenty of guys that will
be handling the ball on that team and he's going to be asked to be a similar sort of spark plug
off the bench defensive um duct tape i'll call it defensive duct tape because there are some
defensive questions on his team and i think that he's going to really shine in this role and i'm
a big peyton watson fan and have been for years also highlights also i'm gonna help you out i'm
gonna help you out a little bit here also the thing i like about the watson deal and this is
why i wrote him down is because in this bizarre way with cleveland you could even go back to the
J.B. Bickerstaff, Cleveland, before they got Kenny Atkinson.
They were looking for the three.
It's the one position.
They're looking for the three.
Like, it was Isaac of Coro.
Then they tried DeAndre Hunter.
Then they tried the assembly line of white guys.
The white guys, the morals.
It was Wade, Ty Jerome, Max Struth.
And it's like, Terrence LaVert.
I'm still not confident calling Struth a white guy.
There's something going on.
His 23 and me is not coming up pure white.
Karis Levert, they even tried out there, you know, coming off the bat.
Like, it was like they just could never get that right.
It was like, hey, we got these two guards and we got these two bigs.
Bro, it's one position.
How can you never get anybody good enough?
I've said this before, but I remember listening to you and KOC like seven years ago talking about this.
Maybe five years ago.
Yeah, it was a Goro.
It's like, if he can hit a quarter three,
they're going to be a totally different team.
And Peyton Watson's perfect for that.
Like, there's no shortage of ball hand.
What'd you think about the little,
did you see the little mini controversy going on
on the show that you produced with Rich Paul,
where all the headlines then came from that pod?
It was like, Rich Paul encouraged Peyton Watson
to sit down so he could get a contract.
I encourage everyone who saw a tweet
or an Instagram caption or something on TikTok
to listen to that episode and listen to what rich paul actually said right yeah and that's
sometimes you've got to sometimes you got to protect guys from themselves but that's that's
also part of the part that was clipped but it's like the whole thing was just it was a very
measured sort of like i it's sort of my job to not let players go out there and make bad decisions
for their career you know i mean like and and that's exactly what you want an agent to do if
you're a player or a family of a player a loved one a player like it the headline is a lot more
scandalous and salacious than the actual statement that rich made and listen to a game over on
spotify the once star okay so the easy one for me to say is john moran but i'm not gonna do it
i'm not gonna do it you can say seven thousand of them you'll never get to mine you get picked
go ahead all right i'm not gonna do moran uh because obviously yeah yeah you know what i
wrote down for this because there's a bunch of guys right like that have moved spots that are
going to be that were once you know stars that are good i did paul george oh god i think i think
there's more on there paul george is going to be so much more spotlighted in terms of everybody
knowing whatever he's doing then he should be at this point but because he got traded for jaylen
brown he like has to be awesome and he can't just be he can't just like usually at this point in
your career you could become like one of the guys right but now the expectation is like you know
bro you're not one of the guys like you got to be like you got to be good like every night you got
Because the other guy was just fifth in MVP voting
And the other guy was beloved
And the other guy was great
And the guy played every night
So now, like
All I'll just say is this
Paul George is fascinating because it's
If he's not good
That town is going to eat him alive
It's going to get bad
It's going to get
Yes, it is
It's going to get bad
They were going to be on that friggin' radio
Every night
Every day
And I mean
Because you're just not going to be able to
You're going to succumb to it
Because it's just going to
The whole story is just going to be
Jay LeBron, Jay LeBron, Jay LeBron
I'll agree with you
If he is active and available
And playing big minutes
And terrible, sure
But I think if this goes bad
It's because he's just not available
I believe
I believe in like a healthy Paul George
I think the bet
I think the
The pivot of him being good or bad
Is more availability and health
Than it is sort of like
Performance on the court
Because in the playoffs he performed
And again, it's not his fault
He got traded for Jay LeBron
But bro, when you get traded for that guy
Just one for one
For the previous
Right
A1 team on the back
MVP candidate
Yes
You can't be like the fourth option
You know what I mean?
Behind like
Right
Richard
And Tatum
Can't just
You can't just fall into the background
And Derek White
Yeah
Can't stay in the corner
Yeah
Yeah
Can't just fall into the background
And so that's either going to go one way or another
But here's what we know
It's not just
going to be it's either going to be good and he's going to be fine and they're going to win a bunch
of games and he's going to be a really good player playing alongside tatum but my god if it's not
good it's going to get bad fast there are so many candidates before the person i'm about to say
obviously clay thompson to rosen levine it's like it's just there's a laundry list of guys
but do you know who i'm saying say chris middleton i love chris middleton
he's a wizard isn't he is he wizard where is he no my guy is a wizard oh your guy's a
deandre ayton oh bro deandre ayton oh no no i i'm gonna bend the rules a bit i'm not excited to see
him but like there's a world he's a star
you
he was a star he was mfg remember after game two of the finals the way that people were talking
about deandre ayton just think back teleport yourself back to after game two of the finals
they're up to oh and chris paul's about to get his first ring there's no way they could blow
this lead and deandre ayton was like the key to the series that's star if you're like a final
mvp care no well some things have happened since then
but
i'm just so curious because i think anthony this is not crazy to say anthony davis might
not play 80 games this season by the way chris middleton is a wizard i know i was incompetent
because i assumed they would move him this offseason what are you doing why are the wizards
why do the wizards have anthony davis trey young and chris middleton why because it's awesome it's
awesome it's awesome it's awesome and i also think deandre deandre ayton is awful i'm just i'm just
trying to pick somebody to surprise you dude that's all i can't i can't stand it plays like
he's got airpods in you remember when he like remember when he blamed his season in portland
because he was sleeping on an air mattress he plays like he's got airpods in oven mittens on
and wet wet socks like two pairs of wet socks like he like this squishes between his toes every time
he steps look he's not awful he just he's not awful it's all in comparison to what he should be
this is a guy guys like him make me more mad than any type of i i would rather you like just be
legitimately awful but you like you give it everything you got you're just not good enough
oh yeah this is that this is the polar opposite he was gifted i mean he won the genetic lottery he is
perfect he could be great and he just does not care about being great he's gonna be one of those
guys for like four years after he retires he's like that's the under eight damn he's gained some
weight like he's one of those guys like well that's that's the under eight sure whoo the one
okay so the i still believe in player oh this is the easiest one for me by a wide margin
not even close you want to try to guess no
oh it's so easy oh wait wait wait are they a grizzly no um easter conference
i will tell you this i've loved this guy since the i've loved this guy since college
loved him and i always believed i always believed that he could have like big playoff moments
and he's just been on rat teams his whole life not his fault either
i don't know colin sexton i love oh yeah yeah and he has been on cleveland he has been on
utah then i was like oh he's on this fun charlotte team and then they traded him to chicago who was
the worst and so i was like it's just his plight this guy is just always gonna be a guy that like
is on these teams and bro i watched him play for so many bad teams and play his ass off
like he still tries so hard i love the key to chris vernon's basketball heart is one word it's
effort just try yes just try chris vernon wants to see you try your hardest like that's it i i i
care do you care i just want i want you to care about the outcome of this i want to feel like
you care about the outcome and like he was playing on horrible teams his whole life and like i think
laker fans are gonna fall in love with this guy like love love if i'm talking to if i look at the
lakers i'm like well they lost lebron james
who took a minimum somewhere else and rui achamora who's actually like a kind of a big piece what
they do lost him but then you're like well i like i like quentin grimes i like i've always liked sex
dude you know what i mean walker kessler like you know the idea of walker kessler is pretty good
mamu exactly if you know mamu can do things in a limited role mamu can really thrive in it like
there's a world in which this works
who knows who knows i don't i don't know but i know this contact and we'll finally get to be on
a good team until they trade him at the trade deadline to another rat team and i have to live
it again i've always thought he's good i've always liked him and i've always thought he could be on
like getting playoff minutes and like one of those guys making the hustle play when it matters most
it's the defense and like he's just trying so hard and we it was always in college he started
slapping the floor and
talking shit on defense to the opposing players they dribble up the ball it was the guy whose
name was young bull i was just like i love this guy you remember when he was playing there's a
you can watch it on youtube when he's at alabama and he had to finish the game with like three
players oh yeah everybody got thrown out of the game and he almost did it he almost
he almost did it he was playing five guys so unbelievable i'm like this is my guy i love this
dude i love it i know no one cares about my rec league just give me 20 seconds is if your fifth
guy doesn't show up the rest will give you some time but you have to start the game it is so much
better having four guys than five guys because we have four guys there's no expectations you just
kind of like hustle and try to like make things happen but when you're playing against four guys
you start losing you're just like what is happening to us oh so demoralizing this sucks
so demoralizing all right hey can i tell you something can i tell you something that i i
i had this thought the other day just real quick as a quick aside of course i i was watching
something and that came on the owner of the of the sacramento familiar okay so he was on this
thing i was watching and it was it had nothing to do with basketball it's like a business thing
or whatever oh it's that guy that runs around and he interviews millionaires all the time you
don't talk about he's on instagram how did you get famous or how did you get rich it's totally
set up this happened to pull up and be willing to do an interview because
millionaires just love nothing more than talking off the cuff to strangers that come up to him when
they're in a convertible that's not set up at all totally spontaneous there's no way this is
prepared of course i'll talk to you about my business stranger and i'll give you this content
for free even though i don't know where you're distributing it of course yeah if you had if you
had uh advice for the next generation what would it be and then they've got this unbelievable answer
off the top of their head anyways vivek was on that thing so i saw him on there and i don't know
why i now
again this is probably like some massive abd stuff but i it like it do you remember that
whole thing about him like the cherry picking thing like just leaving one guy at the other
all-time quarterback yeah of course so how do i remember do i remember
just an idea right think it outside the box no bad ideas in the brainstorm as i like to say
so it ran through my mind i don't know why i thought of this
i saw vivek i hadn't thought about him a long time and i was like oh my god what if he had wimby
it you might be able to pull that off like i wonder if i don't know why my mind went like
is wimby all-time office or all-time defense no defense that's that's not because i his idea was
all-time offense i know one but the other guy tobias harris can be at the other end for all i
care sure
carter bryant what does it matter but we're just defending with four and one of them's wimpy so i
mean like he could for sure guard i don't know if it would be that insane if you had no it's really
like a match-up zone it's it's like a three-person shell and then wimby in the paint and then stepping
out of the paint every three seconds so he doesn't get a call and then he and then he just chucks it
every time the ball comes off the rim he just chucked it all the way down how hard how hard
would it be for wimby with his long ass legs to avoid a three-second a defensive three-second call
maybe maybe vivek had a vision that one day there will be this seven foot five alien and you'll be
able to i mean obviously it was foolhardy with what he had but i don't know people thought the
world was flat for a very long time and maybe vivek is just showing us that it's round i just
thought to myself you know what he might have been on to something if he if wimby was around then
first of all i just love the idea of chris vernon like shitting it's on his phone scrolling
sees the pull up in a spontaneous interview and tell me how you got successful and then thinking
about maybe vivek was ahead of the curve with this all-time offense thing but it's really defense he
was just he just had the
wrong end of the floor i just love the way your brain works i love the way your brain works that's
why i love you so much he just thought he just thought he just didn't envision that there would
ever be a win benyama but if there was you could actually maybe do the four or just have one guy
at the other end of the court do you know how vivek got that idea he watched my rec league team
get a 10 point lead on a team by only playing with four he's like maybe four is good enough
if they're er doctors in their late 40s maybe so all right i'm gonna go quick because that
went too long uh i still i've always believed in max streus i've just always loved the guy
i've always loved him when like he wasn't available he's injured but his heat days
he's took over playoff games and he'll defend he'll rebound he'll he'll he'll play his ass
off he's an effort guy berno you love efforts guys charles barkley thinks he's handsome he
can shoot threes he could drive
he's good in transition there's kind of nothing he can't do okay except start all right you don't
want him all right no i'm doing this i i'm doing not uh it's conspiracy bill i'll do a
conspiracy tinfoil verno or something right because i can't do it this is too much streus
i was listening to bill on my way home today and he's like hey and he's like oh max streus
come to the ringer i love your i love your interviews recently come do a podcast
with the ringer whatever now you're glazing max i haven't heard bill's
i haven't heard bill's pod yet i'm not i'll show you my phone i'll show you my phone but it's like
hey guys let's play you my phone i'll show you my phone streus yeah listen unlistened to bill
simmons podcast just wait for me right here i unlistened to it's the one with house i haven't
played it yet oh because the guy from ucla is in the back half right yeah yep and he's bob jesney
he starts uh yeah but he's
at one point he just it's like it's kind of it's a quick thing but he's like hey max streus
playing for the clippers now you know give me a call do some pods with the ringer i've
liked your interviews recently and i was like oh there is a clippers to ring a pipeline
austin rivers i know i know doc rivers maybe cali rivers maybe it's just a rivers to ringer pipeline
i don't know anyway bill mentioned that now and then you came on you're like i just like streus is
awesome i love that i'm like okay wait is he sitting in the studio with you or something
no he's in the control room he's shadowing me today he's trying to learn how this works i don't
want him on yet he's really just like he watched me prep i took it through my process i was like
first of all you have to watch this perfect video of pulling up in a convertible yeah you know you
know stuff like that yeah all right this episode is brought to you by nas energy every ounce of
dirt sweat and gears every checkered flag and trophy raised every
lap every race every hard-fought place they're all jammed inside every can of nas energy high
performance energy for burning the midnight oil in the garage and pedal to the metal human horsepower
for the streets go ahead crack open a can of nas energy and get after it so this is one of
mine so i'll ask the question here you can answer okay uh full disclosure
on the last game over episode rich paul came up with the question
who's winning a championship would do the most for whose legacy and i was like god damn that's a good
august question right right it's a good question and i was like i'm just gonna run that back i was
like you know what like i do with most things i'll just like like a taco is steak cheese lettuce
tortilla and a burrito is shakes steak cheese lettuce just wrap differently the star most likely
to win their first championship
wembie that's an easy answer no yes it is it's an easy answer to win his first
yes it is they were just in the finals and lost the final he's not a star then
so say you stupid american
yeah that okay all right well how about we do non-wimby that's fair i don't consider him a star
i personally no i mean objectively i don't consider him a star that was literally the
easiest question ever posed in the history of podcasts max do not take that one no they had
a better question max no max truce i'm saying
max isn't
max can't hear your side because he doesn't wear we didn't give him headphones he only wants to
learn from me he's like i don't need to hear verno it's fine max truce do not use that one um
i thought you meant kellerman another one uh
most likely yeah that's why that's why i made the question different
most likely i've got three answers here you can't think of a second one
first of all yours
what's the best yours was the best answer again because you're verno but i'll say wimby
donovan mitchell oh mitchell they'll have a chance they'll have a chance you think let's
let's throw hard in there too is a star yeah oh yeah then you can't win no no because you're
saying first so i gotta i gotta rule out everybody i mean and and lamellos is another grouping i had
and i also had
luca it's gotta be considered i mean i mean i wouldn't you know put oh yeah but you gotta be
considered but i i really think and here's something i wanted to pitch to you and why
it's the mitchell harden combo
last year at this time i did not think there'd be a knicks championship parade
i did not are they contenders yes all right you know could they win the east yes but like in my
heart of hearts i did not think there would be a knicks championship parade
two years ago i did not think the pacers would be in the finals a year and a half ago i didn't
think the pacers would be in the finals so it's like it's not always the obvious teams i didn't
think that a year ago i didn't think the pisses would be the number one seed and could you see
a world in which this cleveland thing works here's here's my problem with cleveland and
again i love the peyton watson acquisition harden depth mitchell harden watson i know
mobley allen that's that's a lot for a 36 year old that you're counting on with with harden right
during the regular season and all those guys are playing 37 minutes in the playoffs i don't like i
do not like their depth anymore at all it's just gotten pilfered like it is a good starting five
what about my guy tomlin what about my guy tomlin but you look at that's a memphis guy
i mean again it's just not good enough yeah i know
it's not good enough and you know i'm like philly's got guys that come off the bench for
them and can like really contribute and yes indiana's gonna have guys that come off the
bench for them and like can really contribute and like like i think there is a thing with this
depth now and because you can't lose anybody i will say their team and it's like that's
available players like over the course of their career those five guys are pretty available
pretty available yeah i mean
but again you're i know but you're like but you're one away because they just i just don't
it gets bleak after you get through that starting five it's not good i don't think their bench is
good enough i could see i could see like the pace of two years ago they don't impress that much in
the regular season to availability and lack of depth as you mentioned but like when it cuts down
to like a seven and a half person rotation and everyone's minutes go up and if it starts clicking
you know they're just working hard in last year i'm just saying like i'm not picking them to win
the east but i would think the pacers were going to win the east two years ago i wouldn't think
they're going to win the east last year and so it's not always who you think it is it is not
always who you think it is but i will never trust james harden ever i always think about that and i
think about those 19 missed threes i'm like man like what if they make two of those how does that
change small move big results
mine is stupid for this one i'm telling you no i i look on my notebook i will just say i wrote this
down but you've been nice to me this episode i would say probably 65 percent relatively nice
relatively nice in comparison to past behavior yeah yeah 60 65 percent nice 35 percent
if that was more 50 50 or usual like it is where you're mean to me 70 30
this was mitchell robinson but i'm xing it out
and i'm going i'm going isaiah joe oh and this is and and here's why i'm going isaiah joe because
there is a part of me that wonders what if like is he just one of those people who's going to be
those guys that he plays 21 minutes because if you play isaiah joe 21 minutes or you pay him
30 minutes you're probably getting about the same thing or is he a guy because you go back and look
the last two years he has played 21 minutes a game he is
average 11 points a game and he was not far off from 50 40 90 he was 46 percent from the field
42 percent from three and 89 free throw shooter and that's in 21 minutes and 11 points a game
and it's like all right well now he gets a way bigger role in detroit he's still getting set up
that needs a joke right like it we're gonna find out i i'm at least holding out like what if he is
a guy that like just because of the circumstances he was playing 21 minutes because they got too
many good players right they got case on wallace and they got killed just out tanner and they got
thorn and they got aaron wiggins and they aaron wiggins might be another one in atlanta we might
find out that those guys what if they did get like starters minutes
you
are they like does that production remain the same because those no like the shooting numbers
are the shooting numbers that's a lot well i mean you shoot 42 percent from three it is interesting
because the opposite is true for like miami heat players you know i mean they're in that system
and they leave the system and all of a sudden the production just goes straight down not everyone
given a bigger opportunity can continue the same results especially in a new system totally fair
that was also the spurs guys the spurs guys back in the day but in this case
yes he is a perfect fit for them and listen you know i'm a knicks fan i talk to knicks fans all the
time strangers friends group chats whatever and like listen do you remember that guy who went
through the bs reports and like the how many times someone was mentioned it was like lebron james and
joe house whatever he like oh yeah yeah and if someone we went through all my conversations like
how many times were eastern conference teams mentioned it would be knicks sixers
celtics calves pistons and the pistons were the number one seed you know what i mean it's like
it's almost like they don't they're not like considered top of the east even though they
were literally top of the east and i would in the oh did they make a big splash in the offseason no
but like isaiah joe's gonna be very helpful for them well and you and you make a good point because
there was that was always the spurs that were like this right sometimes you would go somewhere else
and it would be jonathan simmons and you'd never hear from him again or it would be
uh bryce what's his dick and you'd never hear from him again and it would be gary neal and you
never really heard from him again but when they were all playing for the spurs it was like it was
cracking and that that has been true but then there's the derrick white of course and so that
might be true we're about to find out because there's a bunch of these thunder guys we're
gonna find out with dort we're gonna find out with wiggins we're gonna find out with and one of them
might end up being derrick white where it's like wow derrick white was actually capable of being
like a number two option in spots yeah it's i was thinking about the press conference they're like
listen up you know fan base look at we got this new guy and here's his jersey and go buy season
tickets and you're just kind of like oh well you know three months in you're like well what about
what about all those promises you know and right i think isaiah joe will not be that because i
think he's kind of the exact player that they need mine is julius randall oh shut up
you pair him this was big results with michael there'll be big results michael porter jr
what and yegor joman clowny wolf sarah big results they're gonna need to go they're gonna win 15 games
this year they need to run it back they need to go re-sign cam thomas let him that way so that way it's
just really whoever has the ball shoots it
oh they got the maps the got the maps gone right thank god all right so you don't have to worry
about that no i'm gonna delete it from my phone right now i can't wait this is gonna make me so
happy what are they gonna be on how do i do this hold on delete you remember you used it
used to look at it right here delete it wow wait keep subscription
have i been paying for this thing

subscribe for 299.99 per year no thank you thank god i did that because i would have forgot
gotten paid gotten charged 300 for yank but i thought it was gone that doesn't mean they can't
charge you you know that for like uh and and nycfc games or something you know i mean they're like
the red bulls i'm sure they have or whatever the mets i don't know i should get commission
on you deleting this i'll venmo you 10 right now buddy last thing last thing before we get
out of here hold on i have to venmo you no you don't have to venmo me oh i haven't i got a new
phone so i can even log in all right scandal you care about the most kawaii clippers laker sale
the blazers owner being cheap enos freedom it's ennis ennis maybe the nets could sign him
since he's not getting in the wmba it seems they said they said they ruled them out
what do you think which one do you care about the most
i guess the blazers owner being cheap just because i'm afraid they're gonna move
i think that's gonna be a disgusting story i do i think it's gonna be truly disgusting
this guy this guy's wanting to move and and like they've been writing about this
like from the day he took over and they're gonna blame the lady that sold him the team
and this has just got all the makings of you know a franchise getting its team ripped away
from them uh you know fan base getting their team ripped away from him because they sold to the wrong
guy and i think that's his plan i think that's what he is i think it's what he's he he seems to
be conducting himself in that manner and so just because that'll change the league you know in the
end of the day he'll have new owners but whatever ballmer will probably get away with the kawaii stuff
completely and enos freedom's just an idiot i mean i mean so i think the blazers
i'm really worried about that i i you know there's not that many you know one they only got that i
got it they've got like a wmba team or whatever but i mean like that's their that's their team
oh yeah portland's team and it sucks
i just really hope this is some sort of bluff and they keep the team
but i'm afraid it's not the one that i care the most about is uh kawaii and the clippers
and here's just because you're friends with i'm friends with pop now and here's how i see it
playing out it's in the best interest for steve ballmer one of the richest people on the planet
for this just to go away it's in the best interest
for the nba uh uh i don't know multi-billion dollar league for this to just go away
i'm afraid that pablo turnt poet torian's name is going to go missing
and i'm going to have to go after him like liam neeson and take it he's not going missing i just
feel like an suv is going to pull up and put a hood over his head and just drop him in the back
and we're just gonna be like where's pablo and no one knows
like it's just like there's so many billions of dollars at stake and they all want this just to
go away and then come out with some sort of ruling being like we did investigations there's nothing to
see here everybody move on and papa's gonna be like okay here's what i got if we can't just move
on and i'm just i'm just gonna i'm gonna have to like harbor him at my house on my couch
counterpoint it doesn't matter because he got his pulitzer prize for podcasting anyway
i love that the blowback was just like this guy was faking the whole thing no no no everything
pablo presented was real i just think that what it boils down to and i want to get into it boils
down to there's a difference between knowing somebody committed a crime and proving in the
court of law beyond a reasonable doubt they committed that crime there's a pretty big gulf
between those two things and i think there's enough evidence that there was salary cap
circumvention between the clippers organization and the clippers organization and the clippers organization
and kawaii leonard but proving that proving that beyond a reasonable doubt in the court of law
is different than knowing that it happened well and this is like the i mean when they even said
that they were negotiating that was represented i'm saying that yeah that they were negotiating
a settlement type of thing and it's like okay this is like no one asked why did you why did
you offer up that information right no one asked yeah
they've already talked to you know the they've already talked to him about negotiating a
settlement whatever else and so you're probably right if i just go away
two more things before we go i'm not going to be on the mismatch next week because i'll be driving
an rv with my family maybe i'll be on this i'll be dying on the side of the road in the desert
turning into a skeleton because my family drove away without me and i deserve it probably i'm i
am not innocent in this whole disaster of this weekend and number two during this podcast because
i'm alone in the studio i've ripped like two 10 second farts like long huge gross 10 second farts
over the course of this podcast did they make i didn't hear them no they weren't loud enough
i've i've audio control on that i turned it down but wow yeah this is uh do you know those ones
that make your stomach feel so much better afterwards you've been sitting in it yeah but
it's also like it's just like those ones that make your stomach feel like you lost five pounds
you're just like oh god it feels so much better now and you feel like it it felt like do you think
it improved your podcast performance or do you think it detracted from it detracted definitely
you think it detracted yes you were sitting in the odor and it detracted yeah i mean i wrote on
