In this inaugural podcast episode, the host, Miles, introduces his new show titled "Just What the Doctor Ordered," a tongue-in-cheek reference to his recently completed doctorate. He explains that the podcast is inspired by the nostalgic value of old Facebook posts from 2009–2015, which documented mundane yet meaningful life moments. Now a father to toddler Emmy and newborn Gabrielle, he wants to preserve similar everyday memories—like Emmy’s quirky sayings and daily routines—that might otherwise be forgotten. Miles compares his current life to beating the main story of a video game and now tackling "side quests," such as earning his doctorate and running marathons. He describes his typical evening schedule, which includes walks where Emmy looks for dogs, bunnies, and a muskrat, followed by dinner and bath time. The podcast aims to be a long-form version of social media posts, featuring soundbites of his children and reflections on family life. Despite a packed routine, he commits to weekly episodes, hoping to create time-killing content for listeners while capturing fleeting, precious moments. He concludes with audio clips of Emmy asking about her day and her adorable rationale for why Daddy works (to make money for Disneyland).
(upbeat music) Hey everyone, if you're listening, you probably know exactly who I am. I shouldn't have to introduce myself. But my name is Miles, if some random person stumbled in here. But this is my first podcast. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and I've got a couple of buddies who do it, and I think my favorite ones I listen to are the ones that they do, just about life, and about what's going on in their world. And it's one of the reasons why I wanted to contribute to this, and see if I could create some content that would provide the same time wasting ability that others do for me. So hopefully I can do that. A couple of things we're gonna talk about today in this first episode is why I titled it the way that I did, and why I wanna do this. It's got some social media connections to it, and then a couple of the random things. But to start, I titled it just what the doctor ordered, and this is from a kind of an inside joke, great naming a podcast after an inside joke. But I just, I just finished my doctorate in the last year, and I'd always joked while I was doing it, that I was doing it so I could go to a restaurant when I was done and order my food, and when it came, I could smell it and say, "Ah, just what the doctor ordered." And I graduated and I finished, and went to a restaurant, and I remember I, this was probably, I've been in graduate for over a year now, and I don't think I said it once, and I said it was zero confidence, 'cause the second I started saying it, I realized it was as lame in this corny, is it actually is? So we're using that now for the title of the podcast. But the reason why I really wanted to do this is twofold. A, I was looking at old Facebook posts, like the memories that pop up every now and then, and I realized I have this like time capsule of what my life was like at this time, and I started Facebook pretty early on. It was 2009, I think I was a freshman in college, I remember sitting at my desk, creating my account, and in the next couple years, a lot more people joined and friends, and family members joined, and I feel like the heyday of Facebook was 2010 through like 2015, 'cause I remember just like sitting in college classes and scrolling through, and at that time, everybody posted, and the content was so, I don't gonna say, it wasn't lame, it was just about nothing, it was just about life, and it was pictures from what people did and thoughts and ideas, and I love that, there was so much creativity there, just because people are posting content, and I don't feel like that's the case anymore, and regardless, I don't feel like I post that kind of stuff anymore, so I don't have that time capsule look back upon anymore, I don't have now memories where I look back, and it says, you know, last year you did this, I haven't really posted in that way for several years, and now I feel like is more of an important time as ever, 'cause we've got our toddler to year old Emmy, and now in Newborn, well, one month old now, Gabrielle, and I wanna be able to capture what's going on in their life, and it's the mundane stuff that isn't major, it's not like when they first said their first words, when they first crawled, I wanna capture the little things, like I did with my Facebook post back in the day, the moments, you know, for example, like the things that Emmy says that seem like they're gonna last forever, but there's gonna come a time where she's gonna say some silly thing that she's always saying for the last time, and it's gonna be lost in memory, and I'm sure whether her first year life, we've lost those moments. So I wanna be able to capture those things in kind of the same way that Facebook posts used to, so I feel like what this podcast is ultimately gonna become is kind of like the long form, old-fashioned social media post for lack of a better word. Now, just looking at my phone, for some examples of what these posts that I'm talking about were, I mean, it was, I have a record on May 3rd, whenever it gets posted, who knows, because I know there's a lot of editing, and God knows what else that goes into posting at the podcast. But May 3rd, 2012, no more exams, homework or classes, miles has finished with school. I mean, I didn't know that I would then go back to school for five or six more years, but it was exciting back at the day, or writing around in the tractor with dad, my favorite Friday night in a long time, and that is really saying something. I mean, just these moments, this random little thing that happened in 2012, and then 2013, that, you know, I can look back and I have these memories from. I know exactly where it was when I posted the no more exams, homework, or whatever Facebook post, and I don't have that anymore, so that's, that's the void that I hope this podcast fills with memories of my kids. And you're gonna hear about stories, you know, big moments, little moments, even ideas, thoughts, things that happen at my job. Things like that is what I wanna fill this, fill this podcast with. And I, again, I've never done this before. I think I'm kinda drawn to the challenge as something new. I, I remember like one of the posts that I actually wanted to post on Facebook. That just seemed like too long at this point in time. I, at this point, my Facebook posts are from Instagram and they're like my once a month videos from one second everyday app, which I highly recommend. I think that's the single best app. I would recommend to anybody, you just fill them one second each and every day of your life and posted them in the month, and it's the best. The absolute best thing to look back on, especially the end of the year. I remember, I loved it 'cause at the end of, it was 2020, I watched the video and of course, that was a COVID year, but you would never have known that the world went through a pandemic just based off my video 'cause it's about the mundane moments of your life. I could kinda like this podcast is gonna be. But it, it helps you realize like how much good that is. Like, there's so many good little things that I think go kind of unnoticed and it's so powerful in that regard. So, go out, download it, fantastic app. The trick is remembering each day to do it. If you forget, just, I just take videos of a cat or something random like a coffee cup and call it good, but it's awesome to look back upon at the end of the day. But what I was saying before I got sidetracked, I remember when I turned 32 years old. I feel like I'm at the age where I have to do math on how old I am now. But I remember sitting there rocking, emitting sleep at the time, she was barely a couple months old. I remember feeling, this is gonna sound nerdy, but I feel like at that point in time, I'd beat the video game of life. Like I'd watched, I'd beat the main story and I'd watch the credits roll for all you video game nerds who know what that's like. Because I feel like I'd accomplished my amangal. I remember all I wanted was to get married and have a kid. And I feel like at that point, at 32 years old, I'd really done that. I had a great job, great friends. I loved the people that I work with. It was so cool in that moment, thinking that. And I then realized there's always all the side quests, all the extra stuff that goes into a video game to 100% and get the platinum trophy. So I feel like at this point in my life, I'm trying to go out and do those things. And that's part of the reason why I went and got my doctorate. It was that extra challenge. And that's why we, you know, me and my wife have ran a marathon and we've done other weird crazy things and perhaps this podcast is also kind of feeling in that void of doing something just to add to that, that resume of sorts and just kind of go out and try new things and continue to do more of these side quests that kind of come in that extra video game portion of life. But anyways, that's the goal of podcast. That's what this is gonna be about. I wanna kind of capture all these moments in just like a long form way of telling about my life. And it's kind of that next step in the evolution of, I guess, social media posts that I wanna try out and see how it goes. The goal is to do weekly podcast. We'll see how that goes. I feel like the trick is gonna be finding the time to do so. There's, I feel like I have, my life's kinda like a puzzle and I gotta figure out where the empty pieces are to be able to fill in with this podcast. And I guess to give you a quick breakdown and I guess ultimately this is what this podcast is about, I go to work every day eight to five and then I come home and I'm home around five, 30 or so. And this point in time Kendall's already picked up and me, Emmy's been at daycare all day or at school and she's had Gabby. I try and do what I can to level out that load and usually Emmy wants to go for a walk. Well, she's gonna call it walk. She wants to go look for dogs is how she phrases it. And I feel bad because a week grew up with dogs, I feel like it's an crucial part of childhood to have something like that to grow up with. And she loves dogs. There's two giant dogs that are daycare and she's got no problems with them, which I'm so grateful for. But we don't have, I don't feel like really have a space to treat a dog fairly in that way. Growing up on a farm, our dogs always had room to run and to play and I feel bad where we can't have a fence and then traffic and inside all day. But anyways, so I mean, well, she doesn't have a dog. She always wants to go out and look for dogs and we count them and she looks at their color and she waves at them and it's cool. And we recently found that there's this lady down the street who has bunnies in her yard. She has a hutch and she moves them around the yard so they eat her weeds. And Emmy wants to go down and see the bunnies. There's Mr. Chips, there's Chini, there's the 10 baby bunnies. And the dog Teddy who guards the bunnies and sometimes scares Emmy and sometimes she wants to go see him. And there's also this pond on the way that she likes to go look at and there's ducks, there's turtles. And one time we somehow lucked out and happened to see this muskrat that popped his head above the water and swam for like 10 seconds and then disappeared. So she always wants to go see this muskrat. It's now her favorite animal, she says. But I don't know if we're ever gonna see this muskrat again. But anyways, we have these daily walks that we always try and do. Walks might be too strong a word. There's a lot of looking at dead worms on the sidewalk and waving at people's yard ornaments and their birds. And it takes a minute, but that fills up a lot of time from 530 to 6, 615 or so, then she eats dinner. She's got a great, very diet of about three or four things. Her favorite thing in the world is black bean quesadillas where that came from. No idea, I would, I would have ate that as a kid, but I've made it.
hundreds of them by this point. But let's black bean case ideas whether hot cold first thing in the morning lunch dinner she likes noodles and pesto probably has consumed more pesto than any kid her age by far more than I'd consumed probably the first 25 years of my life and then she loves dino nuggets gluten-free dino nuggets because gluten is not her friend nor eggs but anyways make dinner and then she gets in the bath and again there's just not a whole lot of free time in between these activities if you've ever had a toddler before in the bath she wants well a couple times took a bath in the big girl bath but we've resorted back to a kitchen sink tub bath which she is way too big for but it's great because it's easier to fill up it's quicker and she can take a bath while I start making dinner for mommy and daddy as she says and we're trying to get that done before she goes to bed and then it's the whole process of getting her pajamas on and reading stories and by the time this is all said and done she's in bed in a sleep it's probably a closer to eight at which point there's no energy left in the tank for either Kendall or I so it's again it's like a puzzle for how to fit this podcast in and right now I'm hoping to find space enough to do at least do it once a week and to get everything done and set up and organized and hopefully it gets quicker as we go but again I'm shooting for once a week I want to get a good run in I don't want this to fizzle out after one or two or three weeks I want to at least hopefully keep this going through the summer and then as long as I can because I just I want to capture these little moments in life that I'm sure otherwise just get forgotten about and we've been so bad about keeping baby books or journals and Kendall's gonna do a really good job of trying to do better with that but I think I want to capture these memories and it will just be about family will be about friends it'll be about life it'll be about a lot of stuff and again I'm just I feel like imitation is the best for form of flattery and I've got a couple buddies who do a really really good job of this and I want to kind of imitate that and maybe again provide by friends and other people with the same level of interest and time-killing content that they can let's do whenever and make it interesting enough for that to be the case but with that said I oh one more thing I actually created a plan for this and I forgot one more thing I'm glad I created this plan I also want to include me soundbites as I can like recording Emmy and eventually Gabby saying cute little things and Emmy's got a couple of them right now that are just gold she somehow well not somehow and Kendall she loves asking why as any toddler does and she'd always ask why daddy would go to work and once upon existing exhausting all the answers from Kendall she eventually resorted to daddy goes to work to make money and we apparently make money to go to Disneyland so or Disney World that matters so now Emmy says daddy go to work go meet Minnie Mickey Donald Daisy chip Dale make money go there and it's the best and again these are the things I want to capture and I've got a sound bite here it is you're at the kind of way through her very snotty clog nose and her mouth full of dino nuggets but here it is wait why is that anywhere make money for what me my day yeah who else and then I got one more I used to when I'd pick up any up from school I always ask her about her day and I usually would ask her about her day and I'd ask her if I could ask her about her day in an attempt to find a distractor from something else that she was doing or if she's starting to get frustrated about something because then she'd immediately like yes yes ask about Emmy's day so now it's not even it's not even me asking usually hurts is her prompting or it's me distracting her and I want to wash her hair and she's like that so she'll say ask about Emmy's day ask about Emmy's day and it it's helpful because I are the school she goes to the in-home day care is fantastic her teacher Miss Kiana is fantastic about sending Kendall and I a text and pictures about how many days her days going and what they've done so I've got some content to ask her about which is really helpful and here's a quick shot of Emmy asking me to ask her about her day so yeah that's that is a quick I hopefully a good representation of what this podcast is gonna include thank you all for listening for this much again my goal is to get more of these talk about more of these moments about life do so on an ideally a once-week average maybe bringing some guests have them talk about things family members especially for big events like the four-digit liar going to the lake and just give you a touch of all that so thank you all for listening I appreciate it hope you have a great day
