I cannot tell you how great of a life it is to have the gift of faith where you have certainty, where you have confidence. You know that God is with you. I will tell you that every miracle that you read about does not seem mysterious to me, because what I know is if God said it, it's going to happen. This is the desire that God has for all of us to walk like that. I don't know exactly what part you have to play in the purpose on the earth, but what I do know is that it's going to require all of you and it's going to require God on the throne is going to require having your heart right and require regular input of his word spending time with him cultivating his presence so that you can live the greatest life possible. Let me tell you what I believe. Your weakness is not your technique. Don't think you are. Know you are. Are you impossible life podcasts? I am just sitting on a winning lottery. We probably just sparked a business idea because are people still getting buried or are they all getting cremated? I don't know. Creemation with the QR Code. I have strong opinions on that. On cremation, on taking up valuable real estate for a long periods of time. Yeah, to just lay there with something. Oh, all right. Well, I didn't know that you felt that way. So you're getting cremated or are you going to fire my. Oh, yeah, it's just in outer space. I forgot about that. That's actually real. Well, we'll still give you a tombstone somewhere that we can hang on a wall. Anyways, if you want to bury yourself, do it on your own land. Yeah, that's fair. Yeah. And if you don't have any land, what you're saying is that you don't get to bury yourself. I didn't say that. Okay. I did not say that, but I may have implied it. Anyways, okay. Sure, we just offended lots of people. And look, man, understand this is some of the stuff we'll share on you. That's us being silly. That's personal opinions of Garrett. And Garrett hasn't opinion on that. There's a reason I keep a lot of my opinions to myself. Yeah, because they rule number one. They're not ready. They're not ready. They're not ready. All right. I'm 10 for that intro to be such a distraction to us. But today, man, I'm always excited. But dude, I cannot wait to just really share with you guys. So I'm going to finish the story of what happened. We're in has one in the chamber ready to fire. Boom. That's a thingers itchy itchy. I'm keeping it safe in a safe position. Garrett, but I'm just praying for someone to give me a reason to put it on. Put it where it needs to be. And man, so like, I mean, we're going to finish up the story about Ray. But this is not just like story time. Hey, let me just talk at you. We're going to talk to you about how to become a person of great faith. Because what I'll say to you is what I've experienced over the past week. I text G the exact words I said, "Hey, I want to talk about this on Monday's podcast." Because I feel like so much of what we talked about has crystallized for me in the past week. And if you don't understand that reference, it's like there's been a bunch of things that have been floating around and they finally all came together to make solid form. Yeah, what is it that you feel like has finally crystallized for? Man, so look, I've had a grace of God and a certainty in the way that I've been walked and the nearness of his presence that, truthfully, I never want to lose. And you may be like, "Well, what have you been doing for the last, you know, X amount of years?" Look, man, I've been seeking God wholeheartedly. I've been getting developed. God's been maturing me. He's been bringing it around. Guess what? I'm not the finished article. I still have a lot more maturing to do. This is not by any means me taking a victory lap. I just feel like this has been such a defining moment. And I'm going to share the story so that people can understand. So if you didn't listen to episode 294, that was last Monday's, then you may not know what's happened. So basically, we all ran a 50 mile or together, which is like not uncommon for you and me to do hard things. It was the first time we had our lives, hard dog for life. That's what I told Lindsay. That's a little few hard dogs in. Oh, you know, and she said it would end up in Johnny's extended cut. Yeah. I want to share that real by the way. Johnny who filmed the 50 mile or four is just put together a very broad six second of all the different places. Garrett said hard dog. He's just like hard dog, hard dog, hard dog, hard dog, hard dog, hard dog. It's all you got to do. It was just to cut. It was just the answer for everything. But going back to, so we did the, we did the 50 mile at mile 36 and a half. My wife, it was 96 degrees. It was very difficult. She started, it was brutal. She started getting heat stroke. And what happened was that? Well, what was the DNF rate? It was more, well, he said that the F stands for do not finish. Yeah, they did not finish. I didn't get the percentage, but he said they had more DNFs in that race than they did the past five years from the numbers. But I looked at for the 50 and the 100. The 100 was over 50% and the 50 was a, I don't, it wasn't quite 50% but it was super high. Right. And yes, I mean, yeah, you're talking about maybe one and two, not less than one and two for the 100 mile, like finishing. And for the, it was just, it was brutal. We'll just, we'll just say that. But we had to get pulled out not because she quit, but because her body said like no more. So what happened is when we, we, we were laying her on the side, we're doing all the right things, put nice on her and all that sort of stuff. And then she's gradually kind of going downhill. She keeps vomiting and she can't keep anything in. She's drinking more to try and replace what she threw up and she's like hyperventilating the whole time and she's like shivering. She's like shaking and she can't seem to shake that. So I'm laying her down. I was, we were going to, we rode there with you and we were going to wait until you guys came back and eventually it was like, I said to you, I was like, do I got to get her home? So we borrowed Johnny's car and I'm driving my wife back. And as we're going back, she's like, first of all, she's like trying to signal to me to pull over all the time to throw up me and like, she wasn't able to speak. And gradually her speech was disappearing. So she's like going, she's a bit of a, like, what are you saying? And so I was like instructing her very firm as like stop talking. If you knew me to pull over, here's a hand signal. Like that's where we got to. And we had to pull over five or six times and she didn't even vomit. She just felt like she needed to. So I had, through some friends, we had arranged to have an IV waiting for it at home because I was like, this is not just your standard. Hey, we'll sleep it off and have a gatorade. I wish it was that, but it wasn't. So we get back to the house. They give her a Zofran. Fortunately, the person that came, Nester and Cynthia, if you guys ever listen to this, thank you so much for being who you are in our church and just being amazing. Cynthia is a registered nurse and so she gives her Zofran and she's testing my wife for a stroke because she's not talking. No one knows what's going on. Like, we're not, we're not going like, oh, I know exactly what this diagnosis is. We're kind of like, well, this is different. Like my wife is gibberish talking to me and every once in a while she'll go, I love you. And I can understand that I'm like, I love you too, babe. She's like, you can tell she's, she's scared. And so we, they take a stroke test on her. Now, side note, my wife's mom had a stroke last year in summer and unfortunately her uncle passed away of a stroke. So like, they start getting her stroke test. The reason I'm sharing that is because this is an opportunity for fear to enter in, right? And so as my wife regresses, she's not squeezing the hand as hard. They cut off the IV, which we had, she'd hardly gotten any and Cynthia goes, we got to get her the ER. Take her to the ER. She's a CT scan. They don't know what's going on. Like the doctor's like, okay, how long should we do? They're looking at her like, what the heck? The nurse is going like, they're asking her questions. Like they're going, what is your name? And she's like, hey, should we do it? Hey, babe, babe, babe, like literally where are we? Hey, babe, babe, babe, babe, like she can't answer anything. She's speaking nonsense. I carried her out of our house. I carried her into the house for the IV. Carried her out of the house. When I was carrying her out of the house, one thing that was still interesting, she was speaking in tongues, which I love that because that was the only thing I understood. And so then when I carry her into the hospital, she's just, she's not even recognizing me as her husband. You talk about like glazed over like shaking and just like, it's just a wild thing. So they don't know what's going on. They give her a CT scan because they're trying to figure it out. We get her out of the CT scan. I'm with her. She's still in the same state. There's a couple of nurses. She starts having a seizure. And I've never seen someone have a seizure before. It is a very violent, sudden thing. I watch my wife phone from the mouth and I call the doctor and he's like, okay, you should go out and like they get me out of there. Well she keeps seizing and I know this after the fact because I talked to the doctor, she started to turn blue and she would have died. Like my wife legitimately would have died from seizures, but they popped the tube down her mouth, intubated her, sedated her, obviously to be able to pop that tube down there and got her breathing on machines where she then breathed on machines for the next 40 hours. So I take her in at Saturday at 11 p.m. We finally get her on the machines and everything. By the time I'm leaving the hospital, it's close to 3 a.m. on Sunday. I get home, I sleep for four hours, I go back to the hospital, right? So they've moved into the ICU.
She's unconscious and she's unconscious all the way. She eventually woke up Monday afternoon around like 4.30. Now, my kids have no idea what's going on. I will tell you what was so apparent and prevalent, really the point of this story is not like, I just wanna be very upfront. Yes, my wife is making recovery and we love her and we care about her. And so there is like a man, I feel for your wife, for sure. The story here is God's grace and the way that he showed up and his spirit walking closely with us. And what I mean is this. So this entire time that we're going, I never felt a single bit of fear, worry and anxiety. I can tell you in the aftermath, the amount of people that were like, going like, hey, it's okay to be afraid. Like trying to like, in almost encourage my fear. And I'll say, gee, and this is, take this how you will because everyone that did that was a woman. And the reason I say that is because as a side note, thank God that women are nurturers, right? Because we need nurturers. If it was all men, it wouldn't be right. If it was all women, it wouldn't be right. But what I'm saying for the men, and also for the women if you'll hear but for the men who are the leaders, you need to make sure that you are aware of what's being nurtured. Because it's not always going to be that, from a place of having a good heart, someone might nurture the wrong things. And so I was always very clear to speak directly to that fear. - Sure. - Yeah, people saying that to you, they're assuming you're in that place. - Yeah, it's from a good heart. - And they're trying to reassure you. - Right, they're trying to make me feel, and I said, no, I was very clear. I was like, I'd not been afraid for one second. And I wasn't. - It wasn't. - This is not the super power next surface. This is me crystallizing God's gift of faith showing up for me in a moment so powerfully that I never want to not walk the way that I have now started to walk this past week. And that's what we're going to share is how to do that. So I'll finish the story very quickly. But what I'm saying-- - And the takeaway you should catch and next going to finish the story here is understanding that in the midst of really difficult situations like this, obviously life or moments, not going the way that you want them to go, understanding that God has a greater plan. - 100%. And so, and that's what I, that is literally the story. Because I will tell you, man, I had no idea what's going on. You know, I shook the ER doctor's hand. I said, thank you for saving my wife's life. I never said that to anybody before. I'd be okay with never saying it again, but if that happens, so be it. And what I'll tell you, man, when I was driving her to the ER, I was speaking in Psalms 121. I lift up my eyes to the hills from where does my help come from? The Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. And the next day I sat my kids down when they had no idea. I just was like, hey, mom's in the hospital. The race was hard on her. She needs a little bit more care. She's going to make a full recovery. She's completely unconscious as I'm saying that, right? And I have no, nobody's going like, hey, it's going to be all right. Like they're doing all the constant EEG to make sure that she's not having, still having seizures. They still don't know that it was just from so, you know, it ended up being hype and atreement if you know what that is. Her sodium levels got to a dangerous, basically a life threatening stage. Salt's pretty important to the body. Yeah. We're made of water and you need salt. Right. And it was really, if you've ever heard like too much of anything can kill you, because they all shared these stories once they identified it. They're like, oh, it's hype and atreement. Like what happens is they told me this story of like this radio station that was like, we're having a contest to see who can drink a gallon of water the fastest and the winner unfortunately died. Because if you flood your body with too much water, it can't get the salt levels to rise. And this is what happens. So that's what happened to my wife over 50 miles or 36 and a half and an incredibly hot day. But we don't know this. And this one's saying like, I don't know this going in. But the entire time like from the very first time I get there, I just, I went to God and my heart, when I said, I said, Lord, you know, I don't want my wife to die. But like I was very much like, I trust you. And I just felt so, so certainly that he was like, it's not her time. And once I had that word, I was like, good to go. So it's like, it's not her time. She's gonna be fine. So when I watch got, walk out and she's, you know, I've watched her have a seizure. I'm kind of like sitting there going like, wow, I did not expect that. You know, I did not expect that. I was completely unknown. And but I still just felt such a certainty. So when I went home, I thought I was gonna spend the night the first night and end up not because she was unconscious. And I got home with the kids. I packed her clothes. Like when I went back, I really felt the hoist, but you say pack her clothes that she's gonna walk out in. And I told every member of staff, I told every doctor, my wife is gonna walk out the same front doors that she walked in. And when we were in there, I was saying to, I was like, when we went in, I said, hey, here's how we're gonna roll. I went into the ICU, I said, we're followers of Jesus. I'm gonna create the atmosphere. My wife would want worship music on. We're gonna put worship music on. We're just gonna set the tone for God to move. And one of the nurses was like, let's go. And so I was like, okay, you're our person. Like, and Liz, she was an amazing nurse. So anyways, fast forward, she ends up, my wife got out of the hospital on Thursday, finally, Thursday afternoon. She's still recovering slowly. She's gonna make a full recovery. All the MRIs, everything they did, there's no damage. There's no side effects. 'Cause this is what they said to you, hey, there could be long lasting damage. I had one doctor, we did not get it long. He told me he's like, this is gonna happen again, because she's not hypodontrymion. I was just like, no, it's not. Like, you have no idea what you're talking about. You're wrong. And like, we just, like, we did not, we didn't get along this doctor. I made very clear to explain to the nurse that I don't respond well to people who try to use fear to control us. And this guy was conservative in his diagnosis. And he was not the doctor for us. So we didn't see much of him. But the point being, she's out. And I am not a, you guys, if you've listened to this podcast for any length of time, I feel like you've probably got a pretty good idea for who I am. I'm not a, I'm not a wallflower. I'm not a pushover. But like, I'm also not like, Garrett has a level of boldness. And I think there's, I know Garrett better than most people. And there's a level of defiance as he describes himself as an obstinate person. Garrett is gonna, he's a pushback person. I'm not, I do not have as much of that in that, but I will tell you that in this, I felt so bold. I felt so certain. I never felt an ounce of fear. I felt the closeness of the presence of God, the entire time, and I still feel that. I'm still walking in that. I never wanted to leave. And it has been so transformative for me. I feel like scripture's been exploding off the pages. I've read it. I felt just, just to know, like, scripture's made sense. The puzzle isn't puzzling. I feel like the dots have connected so many of the things that we talk about on this podcast. So many of these things that I have, these lessons I've learned the last six years, I'm like, it's 100% right. We always talk about, there's no silver bullet. People wanna have, hey, what's the magic? Like, one, two, three steps so I can get this right now. I will tell you, it is a matter of doing what we've talked about consistently, but we're gonna break down how to grow like faith. Because wouldn't you like to know that if you got into a position like this, you would feel no fear. God would be with you and that you could be strong and courageous. Because that's what's done for me. Gee, I fear nothing. I, you and I were texting and you texted me back and you said, welcome the fearlessness. And it's something I saw on you early on that I didn't know what it was, but I had always suspected. If you know the, the genesis of this podcast is, I'd always suspected there was a level of living that I had not tapped into and you were the first person I'd ever seen that had that and that's what drew me to you. And I feel like now I look at this and I'm like, the reason I don't fear for anything ahead isn't because I'm so tougher because I know what's gonna happen. It's 100% because I know how God met me in this moment and I know He'll be with me in all those things. And so my confidence because God is with me is 100%. So normally I'll help you or I'll do it for you, but I don't want to in this instance. Yeah. You said something really crystallized for you. So summarize that into like one or two sentences. What it, what it was the, all of everything that came together into one finality, what crystallized for you. Just the absolute truth and certainty of the word of God. That it was like all the things that you're kind of going, yeah, but hey, what about this or I'm not so sure. And you just have to be honest. There's doubts and things that you carry in your mind. And I had no, I had none of that. Like in the face of my wife, what made fearlessness for you? Like what, you know, 'cause you've, you and I've talked about it a lot. I feel like I've demonstrated it a lot. You've, we've talked about on the show a lot. You've learned a lot from it. What made it click in this instance? Well, it was just reps, man. One of the things that I'll get to later on in this episode, I think because I had gotten my heart right and I had faced a few squeezes in the past few years and shows in how I was going to respond, there was a lot of things that happened where it was like because I've talked about having a gag reflex to fear. And we, when we teach fear mindset mastery and you can listen to the free three part series, we did on fear, you know, step one is recognize your fear, two is understand what it's cost, you three is despise it and four is, you know, I'm probably messing up the steps. I think four is like you live out boldly and I might be messing those up. I didn't plan on sharing that. But when you recognize fear so often and you've gotten the habit of kicking it out, the only way to kick it out is to have your trust in the right source. And so that's what I mean when I say it crystallized, this was like, okay, here's probably a better way of saying it. You always talk about, you don't rise to the occasion, you follow your level of training, that's the military standard. Well, how often do we, like you guys rise into the occasion is going into battle. So much of our life is not what we're aware of as a battle. Right, our lives are, I work from Monday to Friday, there's a few frustrations, this was kind of tough, I didn't like this. And so we can just get caught in sort of this malaise of river and that ends up being the things of life. And then whenever I, like, when it becomes so compressed to the point that like my wife's fighting for her life and all this stuff is either real or it's not, we'll get back to the episode in just a minute. What faith is where it comes from and how to cultivate a life where you can have great faith because what I'll say, what I've experienced and this has been my heart's cry to God. I'm like, Lord, I don't this is like from the very day from the zero seconds that I realized things were starting to go. I was like, God will be glorified in this. What I want for each and every one of you guys, I would just hope that something in you could catch fire that you could realize that God has so much of what we say on this podcast that God has such a great life for you as a great plan and purpose of your life. It is true. These are not just things that sound nice and to have the understanding of how that's going to happen and to submit and yield your heart to God and seek Him wholeheartedly, that is the outcome that I would desire for every person here in this. Yeah. The truth that I can tell every single person listening to this show and it's the truth that I speak to myself is that there's always a deeper level. Yes. Even for where I'm at in my life today, I know there's such a deeper place that God wants to take me to because it keeps happening to me. I've continued to grow throughout. I was in a great place to be able to teach some lessons and demonstrate things to people before this, before the Impossible Life was ever a podcast. But even throughout all of these last five years, what, September will be five years for us. September, yep. September will be five years. I've grown so much. God's continued to do new things in me. So wherever you're at, whether you're brand new in your faith, or you feel like you're in a deep place of faith, you've got to understand that there's a deeper level that God can take you to. Going beyond fearlessness to like the way that I talk about faith in my life today, I don't need faith to believe in Jesus. Yeah. Right. Like when you when you're brand new and you're like, maybe the God thing's real. I've seen so much and heard so much from the Lord at this point of my life. I don't need faith for that. But I need faith all the time for things that God's doing. Just like Nick had an opportunity to have faith in that moment with what was happening to rean. So I just say I want to remind everyone that what we're going to talk about today, whether you're brand new in your faith or you have incredibly deep faith, there's more room for you to grow. So let's jump into like really living a deep life of faith. So what faith is not for very first thing. And we hear these scriptures. We're going to lay down some scriptures because I think faith can sound mysterious. And then whenever you actually understand it, you're like, well, of course. Right. So he was 116 and without faith, it is impossible to please him for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. What this sounds like is that if you can just strain out enough faith, and this is how I've seen this applied, this I grew up in the faith movement. Like this was I name it and claim it, blab it and grab it. Like these are things that I heard in my household regularly because and if something didn't go your way, well, you didn't have enough faith. And so it's like if I could get the faith meter high enough, God was trying to hypnotize yourself into belief. Yes. And that is exhausting. Well, it's exhausting. And it it is like hypnotism in that it's a trance that it is only in the mind. Yes. And that only exists for a time. Yeah. Right. Where faith really comes from is from the heart. Yeah. And if like you can get your mind into this state just like you can have a coach get you to say these things and you feel good, you feel good, you feel good till the coach goes away. And it's like, I don't know what to do anymore. Yeah. Faith is yeah, faith is not just straining it out or trying to just push through and like I'm just if I just believe harder. Jesus is not Santa Claus that you know like in the movie and so many of the Christmas movies, you know, it's like, Oh, no, we're running out of, you know, belief power. And Santa is not going to be able to write a slate this year because it's elf. Yeah. We got to sing Christmas songs otherwise the slate isn't fly. Right. That's not Jesus. Jesus doesn't need us to believe in him for his power to work. Right. Right. Jesus is demonstrating who he is. God's demonstrating who he is to us. And we have the opportunity to meet him at any moment. But we don't need to just believe harder for things to happen. Yeah. And that's that is literally the perfect analogy for it because like I said, it can feel so tiring and you can just beat yourself up and be in this loop of like, like I'm going to strain out some faith and then like then this is going to happen because your word said this, you didn't get healed because you doubted. Right. Exactly. Yeah. As if you have some magic parts and then in this region, the people like, Oh, we vibrate, we manifest. I mean, like as much as I've enjoyed a lot of Napoleon Hill's writing, this is it gets very much into like if you have like unshakable faith, you just start to just like direct the mysterious cosmic forces of the it's I'm sorry guys. It's trying to put it's trying to put yourself on the throne. Shucker. Right. We're so prone to that. Abraham was God waiting for Abraham to just believe harder for him to give him a son of Isaac. There's a reason that God had Abraham go 20 grow work through that for 20 years. The, you know, I'm just going to blab it, blab it and grab it or manifest myself into getting whatever I want in this moment. You know what I why that sounds exciting because it skips one of the most painful parts of what the Bible teaches, which is endurance. Yes. Exactly right. Well done. All right. So just to be clear, you it's faith is not you straining it out. It's not you working it up in your mind or convincing yourself to a final point. What does scripture say faith is? Nick. No, I'm glad you asked you. It's Hebrews 111. It says faith is the assurance of things hope for the conviction of things not seen. And I will tell you, I've heard that scripture preach so many times about faith. And I was always like, man, like it just didn't feel like it clicked for me. Well, the Greek word is pissed. Well, it can start to sound like, oh, well, I don't feel assured. So I just need to assure myself. Yeah. I'll just keep assuring myself until I actually made it enough. But the Greek word pistis like if this is where you get into the inner linear and you dive into what the words mean, it's so unfolding. And we're going to we're going to give you some color because this really says it. So pistis, it means properly persuasion to be persuaded to come to trust. So faith is always a gift from God and never something that can be produced by people. In short, pistis faith for the believer is God's divine persuasion. God's divine persuasion. And therefore distinct from human belief and confidence, but it involves it. It involves confidence in human belief. The Lord continuously births faith in the yielded believer so they can know what he prefers. Let me insert into the commentary a little bit there. Yeah. If I'm going to persuade you of something, I'm not going to lie to you. I'm going to get you to look at the story in a different way. Yes. And what is that? It's perspective. Yeah. Right. God's divine persuasion is a perspective of looking at things in the way that and so it's not. I love the way. Or may hermosie puts it of shouting affirmations in the mirror. It's not saying the self, saying the stuff over and over to yourself until you just believe it, but it's beginning to look at your situation from a different perspective. Because if you look at it from our small tiny perspective, if you put yourself in Nick's shoes and say, well, like, well, man, I just really want my wife to not die. Right. And whatever I got to say or do for her to not die, then that's that's what I want. And that's running from the pain. That's running from the pain of discomfort. What Nick also understood in that moment is that I can't control this. God is sovereign. And my wife could die, which is a really hard thing to wrestle with. All of us are going to die. At some point, your life's not going to go the way that you wanted it to go. At some point, you're going to die. And what got what Nick understood in this moment is that God is sovereign over all of it. And he's instead of trying to control it, he submitted to God and says, you know what God? I know that you have a greater and all of this, right? I'm going to ask, please, help my wife live. But I want your will and all of this. Whatever matters most to you, that's what matters to me. And out of that submission gives you the ability to look at your life in a different perspective. When you submit to that, when you let go and you give up, then you can say, well, God, I know you can do anything. It's just whatever you want to do. But when you try to turn God into your little genie and say, like, what do I got to say and do to make God do what I want? That's a very fearful perspective. And you should be afraid. Because you have zero ability to make God do what you want him to do. Yeah. That's exactly right, man. And I want it like, I want to read a couple commentaries that were in here just because I think that this is amazing. Like it's what I have struggled to get the right words to explain what it was to be so calm and certain in the midst of a storm. But this is the commentary that nailed it.
said, "We have made faith a condition of mind when it is a divinely imparted grace of the heart. We can receive faith only as he gives it. You cannot manufacture faith, you cannot work it up. You can believe a promise and at the same time not have the faith to appropriate it. Genuine scriptural faith is not about our ability to count it done, but is the deep consciousness divinely imparted to the heart of man that it is done. It is the faith that only God can give. Do not struggle in the power of the will. What a mistake to take our belief in God and call of faith. Christ, the living word, is our sufficiency. That's Charles Price. There was another commentary from Emlaud Jones. He talks about, "You cannot command faith. Will faith is always something that is given in-route by God. Therefore, if you want to be of man of faith, it will always be the result of becoming a certain type of person." I'm saying that because we're going to show you how to become that type of person. So where it comes from, guys, we said it so clearly in those commentaries, it's a gift of God. It's in scripture Ephesians 2, 8 through 10 says, "For as by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves. It is the gift of God not by works." They're talking about your faith. So no one can boast. For we are God's handiworked, created in Christ, you just do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do. It is the ultimate we're here to receive. Let God be God. So in that, let's talk about really how to become a great man or a great woman of faith. Because that's why you opened up with the joke that you opened up with. It's what I've thought about my life and that's what I want my life to be about. There's a lot of great things. I want to accomplish. I really believe I'm going to accomplish. But at the end of it all, what my life should prove is like, I want people to look at me and say that man believed. I think it's so easy to look at your situation. I'm like, "Oh, well, I know I'm going to do this and now I feel good about myself." I think the greatest challenge of a man or a woman's life is to believe in the face of doubt. You can do that. I want to live a great life. That's why I've summarized a great life into a life of believing in God. Believing in God and believing in all the things that he's going to do. That's really what's a special and great life and what it starts with. Like I said, was, right? So now we're going to get into it. This is how to be a man or a woman of great faith. What it starts with is what Nick was doing. Nick submitted. It said, "God, you know what? Your way is higher than my way." That's honor. Honor is to give weight to something. What you value most, what you honor and worship. In that moment, Nick could have taken his wife and put her in the place of this is Dima. Whatever I'll give up anything, I'll say whatever I got to say, just, you know, and this is the part that I don't like that's in movies all the time and is in Hollywood all the time. Partnering with God. Right. Well, I just said, God, if you'll just do this one thing for me, I'll serve you all of my life. And God doesn't honor that. Right. You don't barter with God in that way. What God wants is that you put him on the throne. Right. The only deal you can make with God is God, I'll serve you in you alone. Yeah. Like, and thank you for saving me. That's the deal you can make with God. Yeah. Right. And so when you honor God and put him in his rightful place, that's when you see everything that flows after it. Yeah. And honors a principle. And this has been one of the revelations for me. As much as we've talked about it, it's something I've been walking through, reading John Bevere's book, Honors Reward, which is probably the best book I've ever read on honor. Pastor Keith has talked about honor so much. You and your dad have been, I think, between you, Pastor Keith and your dad, you guys have taught me more about honor. Well, not even probably. You've taught me more about honor than anybody. But where I became aware of the principle, like you said, honors what you give weight to. And so we all kind of go like, okay, but I will tell you the way principles work, they don't need you to be aware of them to work. And so what you put, what you honor, you get more of, you want to honor money. Yeah, Pastor Keith says what you, Pastor Keith's a great teacher on honor. And he says what you honor you have access to. Right. And why is this Jeep? Because honor and worship go hand in hand. Right. What you value, what is worship? It's serving, right? That's really what it is. It's obedience and serving. Like the first mention of worship, if you know, is Genesis 22, whenever Abraham goes over to worship, aka, he's been obedient to sacrifice. Yeah, he says, let us go up and worship. Yeah. Okay. Let's climb up the mountain sun and then I'm going to put you on the altar. Right. And so that was the first act of worship was obedience. And so what you honor, you're going to be obedient to and what you honor, you're going to get more of. Abraham saying, you know, I love my son so much. And this is what I've always wanted. But I'm going to put God on the throne. Right. So when you give weight to God and you say that God's ways, this is why I said it, get crystallized. When I, when you start to honor God, it means you care about what he cares about. It means that you give value to the things that he gives value to. And I'll tell you it, like I said, it's a principle. It doesn't matter if you, if you like it or you're aware of it, there's so many people that they honor money, they honor possessions. And you know what? They get more money in possessions because you get more of what you honor. Now here's the caveat to that. You get all of what comes with it. Oh, I'd like to have more money. Yeah, I bet you would, because what you would like to have is security and confidence and don't have to worry. And you know what happens to people get a bunch of money. They're insecure. They're worried it's going to go away. They compare themselves and there's a bunch of other sinful stuff because it's not God on the throne. And so be careful what you honor because you will get all the stuff that you want and even more of what you're unaware of. That's called sin. That's that's what happened in the Garden of Eden. We do this all the time. So when you understand how the principle of honor works, you start to understand that it is very important what you actually give weight to. And people misinterpret this in Mark 6.6. Jesus has just gone back to his own town and he said he could do no miracles there because they were like, isn't this the carpenter's son? You know, we know his mom and his father and like, they're sitting there like, who are you? And this is the verse in Mark 6.6. Jesus says, and he marveled because of their unbelief. And how I've been taught this in the past and how I've read this in the past is like, well, we just got to have more belief. But that is actually rolls from a place of not honoring. And that's what I'm saying. Like you will make sense of things and miss it. That's a story where people are like, oh, yeah, like Jesus is like Santa Claus. Yeah, just need more faith. Like here's what's really important, right? And this is why honor opens the door and why honor so powerful. It's not, you know, when we're, where Pastor Keith says what you honor, you have access to. It's not saying like, well, if you make me feel special, I'll do stuff for you. That's not what this means. It's flexible. Okay. With was Jesus incapable of performing miracles there? No. Jesus was not going to act outside of God's order. Yeah. Honor and faith are order issues. Correct. Right. When you put God on the throne, that's when everything flows after. God's authority is about faith. There's actually two times. There's only two times in all of scripture where it says Jesus was amazed. Right. Mark 6, 6 says that Jesus was marveled or amazed depending on the translation at their unbelief. And there's only one other time that it says Jesus was amazed. And this is in Matthew chapter 8. This is the story of the Centurion. The Centurion comes to Jesus and says, hey, can, can you heal my servant? And Jesus says, I'll come with you. And then man says, no, you don't need to do that. Right. And this is the Centurion says, I'm a man under authority. He's a centurion. So he's in charge of all these other romances. He says, I'm a man under authority. I say to a man, go and he goes. I say to a man, come and he comes. And I know that if you just say that my servant will be healed, he'll be healed. And it says that Jesus was amazed by this man's faith that he had not seen such faith in anyone else before. Yeah. Right. And so you have to understand that faith is an authority issue. Right. When you understand that God is the one that's in control, that he's the one that's all powerful, that's when you get, that's when you access faith. And Jesus healed that man's servant. He said, he said, go, you're servants healed. Yeah. And Jesus said, I've never seen such faith before. It's an understanding of authority. And so what I want you to take away from this first piece of understanding how to be a man or a woman of great faith is that honor is an order issue. Yes. Really for me. And we're going to come to this on how you gain more faith. It really comes from the word and in my own life, I would consider myself someone who's a people have called me crazy for a long time. But I just have a lot of belief and I have a lot of faith. And that's a gift from God, but word also comes from, right? It's not like God just likes me. He's like, oh, Garrett's special. Let's give him that's not that. I also look at scripture through, I don't think it should be a special lens, but maybe it's different. I wish more people would look at scripture in this way. I looked at scripture and I say, I'm going to do exactly what it says. Like, that's what it means. I'm not going to be like, oh, let's see how that fits. Let me try that out, right? And my view on scripture was really influenced by my time in the military and in the seal teams where they taught me what it actually meant to be obedient. Right? And I think so many people have an extremely diluted view of what obedience looks like. There are most people's view of obedience is you asked me to do something and I'll do that when I want to do it the way I want to do it. And if it's convenient for me, and they call that obedience. And there were times in the seal teams where I was like, I'm doing everything I can do to do exactly what you said. And they're like, you failed. You disobeyed our orders. And I'm like, but I try. Like I'm not disagreeing with you and I'm giving a full effort to do what you said. And they said, you've disobeyed. And that changed my view of obedience into understanding like, okay, sometimes it's not just that I'm trying to do the right thing. That's not good enough. Right? I've got to really understand the instructions and that they were holding me accountable to that. They said, these are these are irrefutable things. You must do it in this way. So just because I tried, and this is where a lot of people
people mess up in their obedience. Well, I tried believing God. - Right. - I went to church and it didn't work for me. There's nothing wrong with God and there's nothing wrong with the Bible. - Right. - You've been disobedient and you've been ignorant in your understanding of what scripture says and don't blame that on God. - Right. - You know what happened to me if when I said, when I get, you know, they told me I disobeyed, if I said, "Well, you guys are all idiots and I tried real hard and you're just mean. I would've gotten kicked out of the program. They would've released me from the program." I had to be humble enough to understand, okay, I believe you guys and I'm trying. It's not working. So obviously I've got to humble myself further. I've got to learn. You guys know how to do this. I don't know how to do this. Somebody please help me understand what's wrong. And that help consisted of a lot of beat downs and a little bit of instruction. But it taught me to look at obedience in a different way. And I have looked at scripture through this lens and this is what I want people to understand. Like this is where faith is going to come from in your life. If things aren't working out for you, don't get mad at God. Understand that He has given a scripture which is His mind and a word and a form that we can understand it. And when if it's not working, don't be like, "Well, scripture is wrong or God's mean." You what you need to realize is we're messed up. And if you could just get to a deeper understanding and truly follow God's word, sometimes it's not, like there's parts of following God that can be hard to understand. A lot of it's actually simple. But you just have to do exactly what it says. And people count themselves as credited in obedience when they've done 80% of the plan. And if you do 80% of God's plan, you'll get 0% of the results. Really, man, that was literally the perfect analogy. The faith killer, we're gonna tell you what will kill your faith as well as how to grow it. Garrett said it, it's pride. And you may not see it as pride, but what were those people doing whenever they were dishonoring Jesus? They were, oh, isn't this the Carpenter Sun? A.K., we know. What makes him better than us? Yeah, who does he think he is? 'Cause we know where he comes from, which the underlying assumption there is that they know who the Messiah is and what he's gonna look like. A.K., I know. And we see this all the time. Garrett, we see it all the time in Mighty Men where you tell a guy exactly what he needs to hear to change. He doesn't like it. And so he ends up leaving. Right? Or he goes and takes another lap. Oh yeah, well, that's good for you guys. It's pride. Humble yourself. Be willing to take instruction. It's so clear. Like you're saying this. This is what I mean when scripture is exploded off the page. I'm reading it and I'm like, the answer is right there. You want God to oppose you? Be proud. You love that scripture. He gives grace to the whole. God gives grace to the humble and God opposes the proud. And that is something you'll never overcome. Right. If you get in that place where God views you as proud, you will, like your batting average is zero. You will strike out every time you will always lose. And people won't think of it this way. But do you want to be the person that's going like, "Hey God, you know, actually, I think you should do it like this in my time." This is where I want it to be. And the I know you told me to do this, but actually, you know, I did it, right? Like I did enough and actually you need to do this. That goes about how it goes, yeah, with my five year old. Yeah, she tells me to do something. And it's funny the first time and the second time I'm like, "Graces, you don't talk to daddy that way." Yeah. Right? You understand? Yeah. And that's exactly how it is with us, man. That's why we compare ourselves to kids because we really are. And so hear that. The faith killer is pride and what will unlock it, you becoming the type of person. Because remember, faith is a gift from God. And he will not, he's not just going to give the gift to somebody just because they asked for it. They tried to strain it. You got to position yourself rightly. And like Garrett said, honor is about order. So you get yourself in order with honor. Number two is the heart. And like we talk about this all the time. Well, scripture that we read out every single Saturday at my name, man, we say rock, kazak, all time. We wear shirts with it. It's one of my favorite scriptures. Joshua, one nine, have I not come and you be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged. For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. What this can sound like once again with like, whooping yourself up. So I'm like, get my, get my, my faith by just like, you know, straining out real hard. No, like how can you be strong, courageous? The only way you can be strong, courageous, the reason I felt so certain was because over the years and the decades of my life, God has worked very patiently with me, very patiently with me to help me change my heart. And I got to reap a little bit of being in the right position because I've learned previously what it is to put your trust in God. I'll tell you, you will never, like why would God say to them be strong and courageous? But you know, it's not like, once again, he's not Genie God. Like, oh, guys, if you can just be strong and courageous enough, then I'll go and I'll remove the amalakites and the hitites and all the it's from the place. And you can have the land of Canaan, I promise you. But man, if you don't be strong and courageous, like, I don't know if I'll be up for it. It's the reason you have to do that. It's because the only way to be truly strong and courageous is to have your source in the right place. God didn't need them to be bold for God to be able to destroy the Canaanites. Exactly. That's not what God needed. God could have wiped them all out and he demonstrated that previously, the Egyptians were 100 times stronger than the Canaanites. God showed what he could do. Yes. Right? He's like, now I understand what I did with the Egyptians. And so if I'm telling you, you can go in there and do this, I need you to believe me. Right. And if you can't believe wholeheartedly, if you can't have full faith in this, which should develop into being strong and courageous, you're not ready for the promise. It's not that I can't get God's hands, it's not that I can't kill the Canaanites. You're not ready to go in and possess the land that I've given you. Yes. And the whole point of the promise land wasn't just for them to just live at peace and everything be okay. What this is all about is God showing this is who my children are. And you know what God's not going to have? God's not going to have unbelieving disobedient children. Exactly right. So he says, what I want you to do is submit yourself fully to me. Have a heart that's entirely for me. Let that become a heart that is truly strong and courageous, that there's nothing else in your heart that is in disbelief, then you can go in and possess this land. Yeah, I feel like a lot of what I do in our podcast set up is I feel like I try and relate to people how to apply some of the things that you say. And sometimes I feel like I'm just a highlighter. Like sometimes I feel like I give practicals. Other times I feel like a highlighter. One of the things Garrett said so many times, I've heard him say it. I can't even remember in how many rooms and how many times he said it on this podcast is what you do daily. You get on your knees, you put your hands out before God and you say, Lord, if it's not you, I don't want it. What is that? That's getting your heart right. And guys, I will say to you, it says that fire tests the purity of silver and gold with the Lord ways, the hearts. And God is going to test your heart. And when you have the tests of the heart come, you will know. I promise you will know it happens in little things. It's going to happen in circumstance. You're going to get squeezed and you're going to have the option to respond with anxiety and with a bunch of worry. Or you can put your trust in God. And where that test looked like for me, I've had a number of them. But the one that I remember where I felt God's closeness was a couple of years ago, I had two weeks of money left. You remember walking through this with me. I had two weeks of money left. Things had just gotten tight on the financial provider. What I didn't say was, wow, what an idiot. No, yeah, you didn't say that. You did say one thing because you know how to press buttons in a way that not many people do. You did say one thing that I'm not going to share publicly. And it was the exact right button to press. And it infuriated me in all the right ways. That was a fun one. But in that moment, man, so I'm walking through this. And like I grew up in a scare with a scarcity mindset and just things were not, we did not always have a lot of money or food or enough for Christmas or whatever. It may be we had things and look, I'm not hard done by it. There's people that have it way worse. I had a great childhood. That's not me trying to dramatize my childhood. I just was surrounded by kids who had a lot given to them. And that was not an option for us. But so I grew up with a scarcity mindset. That's the point of the story. So what do you think my sunburn was? Proverbial like, oh, don't touch that. It was financial, right? Like God, as long as you can just give me enough money, I'll do anything else. But man, like that was my number one warrior fear. And we all have this, whether it's the people we love closest to us or whatever it is, we all have some area of fear that where we struggle to trust God. And you're going to be tested in that. And so when I got down to this point, I just got to the point where I said, you know what, Lord, I trust you. Like you're my source. And what this looked like for me was I was like, I'm going to do everything I know to do. It's what we talked about in the last episode. I'm going to navigate the principles. But if it still goes the way I don't want to, I trust you. AKA I know that you're a good God. It's not going to make me doubt you. You know, sometimes you hear stories of people who they're like, they had a really strong faith and then something happened. Their wife died or somebody died of a disease. And it wrecked their faith. And they went off the rails. Guys, to me, that's not actual faith. That's trusting God as long as he treats you a certain way. And that's not an actual, that's not a right relationship. You're not honoring God and putting him in his right place. So you will be tested in this. And just know trainings all the time. - There's a historian, Star Wars. There's a scene in Star Wars that I love that I think demonstrates this really well. 'Cause it really is about putting God on the throne. - Right. - And this is when Luke is trying to train to be a Jedi. When he goes to Dagaba and he's training there with Yoda. And if you remember the scene, he crashes his X-wing there. And Yoda's trying to get Luke to raise his X-wing up out of the swamp. And he keeps trying. And this is all brand new to Luke. And he's like getting the X-wing to move. But he's like, I can't do it. I'm not strong enough. And Yoda keeps pushing him. Like, come on, being done. Like, you can do this. Like, trust me, I know you can do this. And Luke kind of, you know, essentially quits. Says he can't do it. And Yoda, you know, like literally with just a tiny effort, not even looking at it, just moves his hand, raises the X-wing up and moves it to the side and sets it out of the swamp. And just lowers his head and disappointment and starts to walk away. And Luke says, I don't believe it. Like, how could you do this? Like, I don't believe that. And Yoda just looks at it.
and says that is why you fail. - Yeah. - Right, because Luke didn't believe that it was possible. - Right. - And that's really what you, like faith is understanding, not what I can do, it's understanding what God can do. - Yeah, and it's a gift that comes from you, but that's like we're trying to tell you how to position yourself, that God would give you the gift of faith and it's honor put them on the throne. Have your heart right, stop putting your trust in yourself. The faith killer is fear. We talk about fear so much in life and in, and I'm so grateful to you, Garrett, because like you have been the fear will kill you guy from day zero, and you've been very good at identifying, you know, what the threats are to our growth and to who God's called us to be. And man, we spend all day so full of fear. Like I said, people tried to play Kate my fear and tell me how okay it was, and I resisted them in some cases very strongly. - I encourage you if you're a new reader of scripture, or maybe you're in the middle of a chronological re-through of scripture. You haven't gotten to a lot of them yet. You're doing re-through of your right now. - Yeah, we're in Joshua. - You're in Joshua, okay. Yeah, you've gotten through a good chunk of them. But I would encourage you guys who are doing a chronological re-through. There's still a lot of them left. Keep your highlighter next to you. And every time in scripture, you see fear not highlighted. And then go back and look and flip through your Bible and see how many times you see little highlighted pieces of fear not. It's one of the most important things God wants us to understand is don't fear. Put me on the throne. Trust me and I will show you who I am. - Yeah, exactly right. And it is its condition of the heart. So first, too, G, as honor and have your heart right. And remember, the faith killers are pride and fear. The very last thing is input. And I will tell you, I'm gonna tell you what the faith killer is up here, because this was so clear. I took some strong notes while I was having time with God in the morning, 'cause I'd wake up and I'd be like, "Well, I don't know what's gonna happen to my wife today. She's still unconscious today's the day." And I just felt such a closeness of God. And I became so aware of how much distraction. Like you said, if the devil can't destroy you, he'll distract you. And I love that quote from you. I checked beforehand to make sure it was a Gared-Uncle-Bock original, 'cause it is so accurate. Fear and distraction are like our pride, man. Those are vices that just are destroying the human race from the purpose that God created them for. And it's so prevalent. It's so prevalent. What you input into you, Romans 10, 17, we know the scripture. So faith comes from hearing and hearing through the word of Christ, right? And there's a whole logic that he gives about why it's necessary for people to hear to receive that gift of faith. But like you saying what you said about, "Hey, I take scripture seriously and I thought what if God really means it?" The answer, this is what I mean. The answers are there. Deuteronomy 6, 4, 3, 9. This is the first time that God is giving man the way to live. He's giving him a whole commandment. He's told them how to deal with murder, the law, how to worship him. He's given them how to set up the eventual sanctuary, how to enter into his presence, who will serve him. Give them the whole way of life. And here's what he says. "And this is the Shema. This is still prayed daily by Hebrews to this day." It's Deuteronomy 6, 4 through 9. "Hero Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul, with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart." Listen to this. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise. A.K.A. have these things in front of you all the time. Says, "You'll bind them as a sign on your hand "and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. "You shall write them on the doorposts of your house "and on your gates." And they actually do that. Jews actually literally will wear these things on them. And if you've ever been to a Jewish home, they have, I can't remember the name of it, but they had those little scrolls that are screwed into the doorposts. Like they took this literally, and God was telling us, "Hey guys, guess what? "What's your input is important?" And what do we input, G? We input all sorts of garbage. Like for me, my flavor of distraction choice would be sports. It's why I've had like temper that down. Do I still check baseball scores and watch Manchester United? Yes, I do, but is it the priority of my life? Not even close. Because what's your input matters? And so like God's giving us this template. I mean, He gives us the template of how to enter into His presence. You know, they sacrifice in the morning, they sacrifice in the evening, they had prayers going up all the time. He's telling us, "Hey, it's all the time." I was talking about this recently at Mighty Men, where in my own life, the last few months have been through like a super challenging season. And you know, praise God, I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Yeah, right, but it's been a challenging season. I see where it's just been thing after thing, after thing, and God's fingerprints are all over it. And that's exactly what I wanted. And I'm looking forward to telling more of the story, but back up a couple months, a couple months ago, I might even have been talking about this. I'm like, "Man, this is one of the most challenging seasons for me." And what I, you know, where it's pushing me, it's challenging me, what I need most in this season is more of God and more faith in my life. And so what did I do to access that? Well, I said, "God, God, help me in this. Help me in my unbelief or help me if this gets challenging for me." But also, I was spending more and more time in Scripture. Right, in the midst of your struggle, that's what you need more of. Don't like, "Oh, well, this is what people do." Like, man, life's really hard. I should rest, right? You know what you need when life's really hard? You need more strength. 100%. Where does your strength come from? Where does your hope, where does your faith come from? Well, Scripture says it comes from the Word of God. Lord, the Maker of heaven. And so where I needed more faith, I needed more strength, more spine in a moment, I started spending more time in Scripture. In the midst, like this is a couple months ago, in the midst of some of my most difficult stuff that I got going on, I got this nice, got a Cyber Monday deal, but when these ridiculously large screens, my entire desk is just one big screen. I got three monitors and one monitor, but on my monitor, all the time is Scripture. Yeah. I'm never, I got messages, I got my main window, I got a Zoom call, and on the other side, I got Scripture. I've got it up on my computer all the time, 'cause this is what I need most in the season that I'm in. I need God's support, I need more faith in my life, and I understand where it comes from. Right, when you're tired, when you're under nourish, when you're feeling weak, you gotta go to where your strength comes from, not say, "Oh, I just need more rest "or I need things to not be so hard." And this is where all three of these come together of honor, heart, and input, because if when you get tired and you think start getting difficult, your answer is, well, I just need some downtime, well, I just need some time for me, I don't have time to read Scripture today and God understands that, you're wrong. You're just wrong. Like, you're the busiest you've ever been, ever in your life. Oh, for sure. You're doing, find a more time for Scripture. Why? Because exactly what you just said. Guys, so just know, faith distraction will kill you. The three things that are gonna position you to receive this gift of faith, or honor having your heart right and regular input. I hope that as you're seeing this, I cannot tell you how great of a life it is to have the gift of faith where you have certainty, where you have confidence, you know that God is with you. If God gave a command to me, and I'm walking closely with him, and he goes, "Do this, man, I know with full boldness and confidence, it's going to happen." That's how you read the Scriptures, and you start to see these miracles go like, "Yes, of course, not like, oh, I can't believe that happened." Like what you mentioned with Luke Skywalker, you now become like, "Of course, it happened." Because God said it, I know how powerful it is. I don't know exactly what part you have to play in the purpose on the earth, but what I do know is that it's gonna require all of you, and it's gonna require God on the throne, it's gonna require having your heart right, and require regular input of his word, spending time with him, cultivating his presence, so that you can live the greatest life possible, a life of faith where you know he's with you, you know he goes before you and prepares away, and you walk into every situation with certainty and confidence, knowing that it's for your good, God's glory, and he will be seen, and he will be glorified.
