The Motherquake

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattled New York City and New Jersey, sparking widespread concern and confusion among residents despite causing no casualties. The event was described as rare in the region, with people initially mistaking the shaking for a building incident or a major attack. The intensity was enough to trigger anxiety—especially given the rarity of such quakes in the area—but not severe enough to cause structural damage. A comparison was drawn to a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan, which was 100 times more powerful, underscoring the exponential nature of earthquake magnitude scales. The episode also delved into the debate over whether the event should be called a "New York City earthquake," with arguments based on population, GDP, and media influence, reflecting broader regional tensions. A secondary focus was on Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s recent divorce from Ryan Anderson, with concerns raised about her emotional vulnerability, lack of life experience, and exposure to harmful media scrutiny. The hosts also addressed cultural appropriation in the music of Shannon Blake, noting mixed feelings about her content while criticizing the excessive sexualization and misogyny online. The discussion concluded with recommendations for the TV show *Mad Men* and the video game *Celeste*, emphasizing accessible, thought-provoking media. The episode ultimately highlighted how rare natural events and personal stories intersect with media narratives, public perception, and ethical considerations in storytelling.

Hello and welcome to another episode of Bass News Network. My name is Sophie, aka Johnavarca, and I'm here with Punk Revolution now, aka Kayo, say hi Kayo. Hi Sophie. There has been a vibe shift. There has been change in the air. Things that are happening. Things are occurring, right Kayo? Uh, yeah. There was a historic earthquake that rattled New York City and New Jersey. It's all. It's all tinging. Oh sir, go ahead. Yeah. There's probably about maybe like 2,000 casualties. Hey, that's not funny. Sorry. Uh, there was no. I don't think there was any casualties. It was a 4.8 magnitude earthquake, which is a very big, it's a big one in New York. It resulted in some of the worst tweets imaginable because we're talking about New York here. Well, the thing is, is that like literally what, like, wasn't it literally this week or last weekend? Yeah, Taiwan? The earthquake in Taiwan. It was literally two days before, I think. Yeah, and that was. That one was actually really scary because there were actually people who died from that one and a lot of the stuff. I have a friend in Taiwan in Taipei and she said it was really scary. Luckily, I think she was like away from, you know, I believe it was in another city that was a lot worse than Taipei, but yeah. Yes, but today we're going to talk about the New York one because I survived it and I was living in the midst of it and I felt it and I can tell you the first-hand direct evidence of what happened. So for us flyover, state dwellers, please explain what was your experience? Okay, so it was about 10 a.m. around then is the morning, I get up, I sit in on my chair, maybe some folks are eating breakfast, whatever, I'm getting up on my computer and my chair, and things start to shake. And the first thing that comes to mind, and someone else in New York also said this was, I thought it was like maybe my apartment neighbor or someone like in the building, like stomping, maybe running up the stairs. Kind of just, everything was kind of like rabbling, you know. And then I realized it was getting really kind of intense. So then my mind went to maybe there's like a huge truck or like a huge like, you know, line of trucks driving by and then I realized it's getting way too loud and then I thought maybe a truck crashed into my building. And then of course I was like, oh my goodness, what if New York City is under attack right now? That like, you know, so basically my brain was like hopping from one thing to the next. Just earthquakes are pretty rare in New York City. So it's not really the first thing that comes to mind and given all the scary stuff in the news with the various wars going on, you know, the thought of like New York being under attack, that's just something that your brain's going to hop to first. But then I realized after a few more seconds, I was still alive. And then I realized it was an earthquake. And then my brain was like, I hope this old apartment building I live in that wasn't built to withstand earthquakes are is capable of handling an earthquake. And then the earthquake stopped and I was like, now I get to brag to everybody that I lived through the earthquake. Yeah. And then there was an aftershock, right? And there was an aftershock that was like, you know, many hours later in the day, probably like 10 hours later or something chill on the couch, Romeo was on top of me, my cat. And it starts right, you know, rocking again. I would say it was the rocking level of the the initial earthquake was so the the magnitude is a 4.8, which was like enough that you're going to really feel it, but not enough that anything's going to like fall over. It's just everything's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, I can't, I mean, I guess it's something hard to describe over a podcast, but you know, like imagine you're in a car driving over a bumpy road that's like, and there's like a lot of bumps, like you're driving over like a lot of like gravel or something, and it's like rumbly and gr, you know, it's like not enough to like necessarily have your cup fall over in the car, but it's enough for things to kind of just, you're going to feel bouncy. And the aftershock was about half as intense. So you guys literally got two earthquakes. It's not fair. It was very epic. It was epic. Well, the thing is like obviously living through a devastating earthquake is horrific, but this earthquake was so might like benign that to me, like I'm almost jealous that I didn't get to experience it because I of course didn't, wasn't in New York for this. Yeah, of course, everyone who didn't live through it should be jealous. It was the perfect, it was the perfect earthquake to live through because it was intense enough that you get a little bit of an adrenaline rush and intense enough that you have like a flutter of an anxiety for there for a second that you might die, but not intense enough to actually get hurt. This is New Yorkers are always trying to always one uping everyone. It was the perfect, it was the most New York earthquake ever is the perfect earthquake. It was the best. Yeah. Most all elites in their earthquakes, my God. Yeah. But one thing that's interesting about the earthquake scale is like I said this is like a 4.8 and what people need to understand is it's not like, you know, a regular scale where it's like a 6 out of 10 is a little bit more intense than a 5 out of 10. It works in magnitudes. So a 6 is 10 times more powerful than a 5 and a 7 is 10 times more powerful than a 6. So living through a 5 and feeling that level of intensity, now I know when I see a 7 magnitude in the news, I know that's 100 times more powerful and that would be absolutely horrifying. If at 5 I was already for a second there having a pretty, you know, an anxiety inducing moment there and really feeling it, to imagine living through something like that, that's 100 times more intense. Well, that's what happened in Taiwan, let me see what the intensity was of that one. Taiwan earthquake, that was a, why is it so hard to find? I Google Taiwan earthquake and there's a bunch of articles about New York, Port Taiwan. Can you look up to scale? Taiwan earthquake, I'm just trying to, I'm literally just trying to find the magnitude. Taiwan earthquake magnitude, 7.4, so that was more, so the Taiwan earthquake was literally like 150 or like 500 times more strong than the one in New York. Wow, so that would be very scary, I do not ever hope anyone has to live through something that terrifying, but you want, you want to experience a five. I feel like a five is a good thing to experience, that's a good one. Look at list. Yeah. Well, I live in Minnesota and I looked it up and actually technically we can have earthquakes, but they're so like minor, like there have been a couple over the history, across history. I think they like range in like the threes and the twos. They're only in specific like, like sections of the state, and I think the last one that even happened was in the seventies or something. Ooh. Well, so you guys aren't special. Yeah, a lot of tornadoes. That's true. I don't think we, I feel like they're, I don't even know, I actually don't know if New York City can get tornadoes. I'm going to guess no though. I don't think they can. I feel like there's not enough open space. I don't know. I do. I don't know anything, guys. By the way, I know nothing about anything. That'd be so awesome if New York got destroyed by a tornado. Would it, would it though? Yes. Okay. Yeah, let's burn it down. We need the flood. We need a flood. I live here. I'm allowed to say that. Fair enough. Maybe Queens. Maybe if there's a tornado in Queens. Hi, yo. Do not disrespect Queens. I like Queens. It's just, I feel like they have maybe enough open space for it to happen over there. Amen. Love natural disasters. They just want them to happen. I feel like there should be a tornado in Staten Island and then they literally don't send anybody to like help rescue or clean it up. Everyone just pretend it didn't happen. That's so sad. Please love to New York for like 10 years, so he can say the stuff, I guess. Yeah. Anyways. So there's discourse though, because like people from New Jersey were mad that they were calling it the NYC earthquake, because in New York always gets all the attention. And I thought that was really funny. Like I literally saw an un- I wanted to comment on like a TikTok showing like because I wanted to see what it looked like the earthquake Like what it like felt like because some people got it on camera because they were like already filming something and Yeah, I saw a comment saying like stop calling it the NYC earthquake. It was in the epicenter was in Jersey It's like damn Well So it turns out I just did I just did a quick Google here. I don't know if this is legit New Jersey has a population of 9 million and then New York City has a population of a little bit over 8 million So I was hoping that New York City had a population I'm talking about the city not the entire New York state has a 20 million population But I was really hoping that this the city had a larger population in New Jersey, but it doesn't New York has New Jersey has a larger population So I feel like they are they are valid Well, I feel like it's less about the population and just more about like New York just gets clout. We have a higher GDP Well, I mean, it's New York. It's New York City has a higher GDP than New Jersey. So it's our earthquake It's interesting though. That's the criteria And who you use, but yes, that's the what other criteria is there. Well, I don't know just like I feel like That's being called the New York Earth and my see earthquake because like New York is like the most important like city in the vicinity of the earthquake I feel like it's being called the New York City Earth. Well, okay. You've lived in Jersey. So you know both sides I know both sides of the argument. I think it's called the New York City earthquake because we're the most important and I think we're the most important because we have the highest GDP I'm a bit of a materialist in that sense, and I mean the philosophical kind Okay Are you talking about the feels like the philosophical GDP of New York as higher than New Jersey? No, I mean the the actual GDP. Well, actually, let me Google this real quick just to be sure New York City GDP Come on New Jersey GDP is 1.2 trillion in 2022 New Jersey GDP Just give me the number please Uh Like half a trillion. So yeah No one is surprised This is so evil. I feel horrible. This is what it comes down to to me Like I'm just like interesting. I'm like, okay, so let's see who who does this earthquake belong to New York City or New Jersey? Well, let's see who has more people and more money I was not thinking about it in that way, but that's fascinating Anyway, everyone is like if the the east coasters are mad like it also happened in Philly I don't think it was that intense though Um But yeah, the east coast they got an earthquake, so And also the west coast is also like mad about it because they're like you guys are making about yourselves It's like it's it's New York of course that's gonna happen like you can't be surprised Yeah, I um See the thing is is that when people from LA get mad like why is everybody talking about New York getting an earthquake when we get earthquakes all the time What people from LA don't realize is actually you're just making it about yourself Because we were the one who actually had the earthquake, so of course it's gonna be about us and also it's rare like so it's more of a big deal yes and The bigger question Is Why aren't we Why are we talking about I mean look if we're gonna be if we're gonna be doing any of this like oh why are we talking about this earthquake versus that earthquake Like we obviously should be talking about the Taiwan earthquake or you know what we should probably still be talking about the damn turkey earthquake What I was devastating that killed like a like tens of thousands of people and like people forgot about like a few weeks later so We could play this game all day, but I'm saying is right now. We had a rare New York City earthquake And we have more money and people the New Jersey or we have more money the New Jersey, so it's the New York City earthquake And this I that's the final straw that's the that's the that's the that's all that's all there is to it whatever you say sir When LA has more people and more money than New York City and they have a big earthquake does LA have more people I don't think so let me see I don't know we have news to talk about, but we're too busy talking about the property So no LA has a population of 3.8 million that's it That is what this Google says New York and New York City's population is 8 million so we have twice as many people in New York City in such a cramped area too So New York City is very efficient yeah, we we we want to make sure we're not destroying the environment With with with Los Angeles sprawl. We also have some of the best water Who's we I noticed I noticed I did that I feel I've spiritually connected to New York because I've I've probably spent a total of like one year combined there You know we have we have one super epic earthquake and then it's all of a sudden like So if he's like I'm spiritually connected to New York I go to New York like all the time I'm moving there soon so I'm not a New Yorker. I can't call myself a New Yorker because I haven't lived there long enough Okay, I'm a New York ally, but yeah, okay. All right. All right I'm sure we've gotten on New York listeners who are like okay, let's let's get on with the program here probably I feel like everybody in the world is like that right now, but anyways, let's let's talk about the the news the first news I don't we want to talk about besides the earthquake, which is More gypsy rose blanchored Updates slash drama Yes, so as a quick reminder gypsy rose blanchored Abuse as a child By her mom killed in her mom chosen man chosen by proxy so she likes I think everyone knows who she is, but no No, no, no, we got to do this for the noobs All right, real quick his mom her mom hormone human shelons by proxy and which means that for attention her mom Uh deliberately made her daughter sick and subjected to her subjected her to unnecessary surgeries and medications that made her really weak She had to pretend to use a wheelchair even though she could walk et cetera, et cetera Eventually she meets a man online and they start like an online relationship and Gypsy like trying to escape has her boyfriend kill her mom and then they run away together and then gypsy was in prison I feel like around 10 years Give her a take it was probably more like eight or seven and she has Yeah, since been released and had quickly become like a big star, especially because the act made her super popular the Hulu show anyway So she's in the spotlight and she like famously married Peter Griffin Peter Griffin Ryan Anderson from prison and Like many prison marriages. I imagine it did not work out Well It's kind of a shame because Ryan Anderson literally has Peter Griffin swag Yeah, so it's it's that's I think every you can even listen to our old episodes we're talking about this where we were like We are not super optimistic that this relationship is going to work out given that Uh, it's just such a weird you don't know his intentions Yeah, so there was this people dot com inside scoop Well actually, so first up. Yeah, so gypsy rose blanchard post on the Facebook that she was getting separated from Ryan Anderson her her Peter Griffin husband and People released this scoop and let me just go ahead and read the first few sentences. See just kind of set the scene here Gypsy rose blanchard locked herself in her bathroom in Lake Charles L.A. Oh L.A. No, not L.A. Uh, Louisiana Right, that's the state Louisiana Louisiana. I was like, damn, when did she come to L.A She could she could she probably will she probably will at some point But anyways, she was frightened trying to pull herself together as her husband Ryan Anderson 36 Being done the door late at night Let me in let me in he allegedly screamed Blanchard's close friend tells people relaying Blanchard's account of the situation Blanchard 32 was scared the city detention Could escalate as Anderson allegedly pounded out harder blanchard quickly called a relative to pick her up She knew this was the end of her two-year marriage. He got in her face and screamed blah blah blah blah She was afraid this was this was like the snippet that I was seeing going around twitter gypsy says she was afraid that he was going to hit her He didn't but that happened in the past with her mother. So her first instinct was to tighten up and be prepared Ryan is a big guy and it was really scary So Sophie, what do you make of this? Well, assuming that this is true, it isn't coming directly from her, I mean, she did confirm the separation, but you know, this account of what happened isn't confirmed directly by her. We had to be a little skeptical, but assuming that this is true, I think that she did the right thing by separating from him, and you know, she's a victim of abuse, and I mean, I bet she has like PTSD and like a lot of trauma around like things getting physical even if they don't, you know what I mean? So I think like she made a good preemptive decision, and you know, he clearly, like according to this account, didn't hit her, but if she was afraid of that, like I think she should take, you know, preventative measures. The one thing that does concern me is that like she was recently spotted with her like X fiance from like that, she also had met in prison, they were seen together holding hands and like they got matching tattoos, and like there was like, you know, side together, and I don't know, it does seem a little bit like rash and quick and possibly destructive, and you know, I feel really bad for her because again, like she's been in prison, she didn't, she had the most insane life, didn't really get her education, wasn't exposed to like the real world, then it was spent a lot of time in prison, so it's like, I mean, to me this seems like a perfectly understandable trajectory for her, not that it's good, but I understand like, you know, she seems to lack like awareness of things because of her, you know, stunted development, and I feel really sorry for her, and I hope she's safe. I agree with all that, and I think I'm just going to also go a little bit on like just like a little bit, just try to like kind of reel back the story just a little bit, and I, you know, as a grown big man who's like married to like an abuse victim, you should obviously not yell in her face, not like being on the door and not present yourself as someone who's like scary, you know, but I would say based on the story alone, and you know, I don't know if it would be correct to say that Ryan Anderson, even though he did like maybe behave poorly in these fights, I just feel like some people need to understand like, this article is not conclusive that like Ryan, her husband was, I would say like, abusive. Well, yeah, I mean, and I think the report said that, like it said that he didn't hit her. It's really like no one's business, you know, but theirs, first of all, second of all, this report is coming from a friend and not from her directly, so, you know, we, I feel like we should take it, you know, less seriously, but yeah, I mean, we don't really know what happened, and I think like even if he didn't do anything like, she has every right, you know, to like protect herself and how we're like, and leave her the relationship. You know what I mean? She has that right, so. Absolutely. Absolutely. I didn't, you know, I definitely want, was an implying that she was being rash or like, I just feel like, I feel like from like the little snippets I've seen of like Twitter accounts posting this article online, it's like, I feel like the angle, um, they're like that some of the, these like, these tabloid Twitter accounts are going for is that like, there's something that like Ryan Anderson was abusive or not, they weren't necessarily explicitly saying that it just sounds to me like a really ugly fight that you might expect from two people who are on the verge of divorcing, and obviously you don't want to yell, don't want to raise your voice and don't want to, being on the door. But I think I kind of agree with you, this stuff happens, it's kind of knowns business. And I think the thing that like why we're talking about the story is not to like, you know, turn it into any sort of like thing like that, but I think it's what you were saying, it's totally right. It's like, she has no experience whatsoever with like this out and about in the real world dating and these kind of complicated situations and like, uh, and that brings me to kind of what you mentioned about Ken, her ex-fiancy from, from, from prison, not only were they spotted together shortly after her separation with Peter Griffin, but her and Ken got matching tattoos of husky. Yeah, that's just, I mean, and obviously a lot of people are turning it into a meme because it's like kind of, it's like a little bit funny, but I don't know, it just, it honestly just breaks my heart because I just see her jumping into all these things and I don't know if you saw Kaya, but she just posted a picture of herself, she got a rhinoplasty and like some other like plastic surgery on her face and she was showing the bandages. Like, I feel like she's being groomed/ like, she's kind of putting herself because of her lack of experience and like into the, I don't know, into the media sphere and maybe a damaging way. Like, I couldn't see her being kind of primed for a reality show. I could see her, you know, like, I just, I worry for her, I really do. Yeah. Oh, man, you know what comes to mind is, like Amanda Bines. Yeah. Same. Same. I think that's like the worst. You know, I think this behavior of like running from, running from her, from her husband who she's separating to back to her ex fiance, Ken and getting a tattoo, you know, I don't hold that against her. It's just to me, it just strikes me as behavior of like someone with the emotional maturity of like a middle school or high schooler, which is totally understandable and fair that that's where she would be at, given that her whole life was in prison and she's experiencing this kind of whirlwind of, you know, she got a freaking matching tattoo with her ex fiance and is like scene walking around holding hands with him, but she's also insisting that they're not dating or seeing each other. You know, it just seems like a, probably like confusing whirlwind that's made a thousand times more complex by the fact that she's like really, really, really famous. Yeah. I really hope that like, and I know she stated that she want more privacy. I really do hope she like honors that and has people like her family helps her like honor that and protects her. I know at the beginning of this like, I was kind of, my thoughts were like, I don't know, I think it's okay to talk about her and like post images of her and make memes of her because like, I think she's inviting it and like has an Instagram and wants, you know, the online attention. But I do think like these tabloid photos and stories and paparazzi stuff, like it worries me, you know, and it worries me that like, I fear for her, like her support system, you know? I don't know, I just, I just, I don't know, it scares me. Yeah, that's a good point, you know, it's kind of, hmm, it's kind of a complicated situation because I do remember when she, she came out of prison, there's a lot of mean comments on the internet directed at people who are memeing it and I don't think there's anything wrong with memeing it, memeing her, meming, meming. And I don't think people make, leaving mean comments, you know, snarkly criticizing people who are interested in this story has helped Gypsy in any way, shape or form. But there is definitely like a, you know, a hint of truth there that, you know, and I don't really, I don't think there's any blame, you know, I don't think it's anyone's fault, like, that she had a miraculous story and she's extremely famous now and like she's going through this world, when I think it's very circumstantial, but I agree, I hope she can just like, I think she just needs about like five years of living a very normal, boring life. You know what I mean before, you know, that, that'll, that would help a lot before she jumps into, you know, a relationship or anything serious, you know, I think when you're going through and this doesn't just apply a Gypsy, it applies to everybody, so when you're going through a very volatile, intense moment in your life, it's not a good, it's not a good time for you to be making major off the cuff decisions about your life, you know, and it breaks my heart. Yeah. Because like, she spent a lot of her life being abused and now she's so vulnerable that she is very easy to take advantage of, you know, and abused women, victims of abuse, especially women are more likely to enter in like abusive relationships. and also to be, um, I don't know, highly sexualized and I feel like the plastic surgery, like the fact that she's getting plastic surgery is really heartbreaking to me, like that she feels like she needs to change her face. I know it's a personal choice but like, again, she just got out of prison, it seems really like fast and I don't know, it makes me sad. Yeah, yeah, I mean it's a good point. Yeah, I haven't seen the, um, let me just see if I can google this real quick. But, um, you know, who knows what's going on? Like, it's, uh, you're absolutely right. And you know, like, there's a million reasons, both from her, her past of, of suffering through abuse and also her current situation of being like, out of just how to prison is a million reasons why she would be like more sensitive and, you know, like with a lot of different things. Who knows? Maybe she saw a mean comment about her nose, maybe her ex-husband sent something to me about her nose, or maybe she just, you know, whatever the reason it's like, it is, it is concerning because we all, we all like her. We all like her. She, she, you know, she seems really nice. I haven't seen, I haven't seen any like negativity from her. Uh, you know, we all want someone who's like suffered in the past to have like a nice happy fairy tale ending in their life. We all want people who are like nice and positive to also like be happy. So it's an interesting one. Um, I'm, I hate to say it because even though we don't want people.com doing tabloid stuff and trying to make a big, you know, abuse story scandal and making, you know, obviously people are making fun of the tattoo stuff. It's all sad, but at the same time, I have to admit, I am going to be following the story, you know, like I'm interested, like, I am, I'm a, I'm a part of the system that I am critiquing. Yeah, I mean, I think like, I feel like you should never blame. Well, you can, but I feel like you should be less critical, like not you specifically, but in general, we should be less critical of audiences for like engaging in this kind of stuff because that's like a big part of like our media consumption habits, you know, is to like, we, I think it's okay to like engage with things that are happening and like talk about things. I really think that's okay. Um, rather like, I feel like there's like some sort of ethical moral, um, you know, reason to maybe not, if you are like one of the gatekeepers and media to like not exploit her, I mean, primarily through like tabloid photos and stuff like that. I feel like that's really like invasive. Yeah, yeah, I feel like that's, you know, asking for these details and like, like, you know, people finding the absolute lowest moments during an ugly divorce and like plastering it all over during, you know, with the headlines and like Gypsy Rose Blanchard deleted her Instagram a few weeks ago and is now just posting on TikTok and she says, or she posted, she posted about the divorce on Facebook. Maybe I don't know, I don't know where she still is and is and maybe she's definitely not on Instagram anymore, which is probably good. She said, but the thing she said, she deleted her Instagram for the specific reason that she didn't want her life to be under a microscope. And here we are on Bistou's network. Yeah, no, we are probably part of the problem in a way, I guess, but I think it's okay to like talk about these things like and then more like a critical nuanced way, you know, because we're just, we're more so like, I think she deleted her TikTok as well. Oh, that's good. I do think she should stay off social media. My thoughts have changed. I mean, I'm not, I have no like, it's not in my business. I have, I have no right to be telling her what she should and shouldn't do. But I think, I don't know, I feel like a, I don't know, we should treat her with respect and I don't know. It's hard because like, I think it's okay to talk about her and what's going on with her. But I think we're more focused on like, you know, critiquing like paparazzi and like, we're being tabloids. We're doing it woke. Yeah, exactly. So please excuse our apocry, apocrystee. We shall see. We shall see what happens. Yes. I really hope Brian, I really hope Brian Anderson is not abusive. Ryan? Yeah. You might be. Well, he's a white guy from the south. Okay, we don't know. Anything, we are not making any allegations, but the time will tell. One thing that was kind of interesting was in this people.com article, there was like a moment there where like the friend who was relaying this information was saying that like Ryan Anderson was like really on top of Gypsy all the time, like trying to, when the camera was on, trying to make it look like he was like a really good boyfriend who like cared a lot about her and that it wasn't like really genuine for all those reasons. And like, it's kind of funny because I kind of got that perspective just watching like the reels that like just felt like, well, I don't think this is anyone's fault. You know, when you when you have your cameras on you, you're not going to be a genuine person, but like it's just kind of weird to see like all those not happy thoughts and speculations about what was going on. Came to fruition. Yeah, so I really hope that she will be okay. Ryan's got that fire D. Okay, no. Apparently not. Apparently not. Not fire enough. I don't want to, if it is true that it's like a be a situation I don't want to be like dismissive of that, but true. We'll see. Absolutely. All right. Well, yeah, that's right. We were going to talk about another kind of fun. Shannon Blake. Yeah, Shannon Blake. We're to this episode's about mother quakes. We got oh, that's a good one. Earth quakes, the actual earthquake, which is in New York, which makes it mother. Gypsy because people call her mother, which is kind of weird, but yeah, whatever anyway. Yeah, I have mixed feelings about that obviously. And then also Shannon Blake, who is a mother to some, perhaps actually she has a daughter. So Shannon Blake is according to know your meme. Shannon Blake is a musician, influencer, and only fans model who get skin to significant following throughout the 2020s. Blake is known for her happy naturalist aesthetic and lyrical content throughout 2022 and 2023. Some TikTokers have accused Blake of culturally appropriating black and indigenous culture with her dreadlocks and her manner of singing and rapping, sparking online debates. And I think you know, I think that's a good summary. Yeah. So I kind of have mixed feelings about this because on the one hand, I don't like her music. And I don't like, I do, I do think there's cultural appropriation going on. But on the other hand, I actually, I feel like I'm seeing a lot more hatred towards her than what's justified. And I'm seeing more. Yeah. I feel like I'm seeing like, it's one of the situations where like a woman on the internet does something legitimately wrong. And then like a lot of people take that as an opportunity to like, oh, sweet, I have a free pass to like, dumb gun a woman for being like stupid or whatever. Yeah. Like a lot of people said like she basically copies no name. Like her music sounds like a bad version of no name. And I mean, I will say that her music is not good in my opinion. It's not good. And the lyrics are really kind of cringe and not good in my opinion. So like, you know, I think, I think it's okay to critique people for like their, for bad art. For bad art, you know, in my opinion, I hope she never listens to this. I don't she will. But anyway, like, I think we're allowed to like criticize her, her work for sure. And, you know, there's lines in there about like, they're very like, I don't know, like feel like culturally appropriate. You know, because like, like, she uses a lot of A A V E. She like, but she also like, she talks a lot about like spirituality and like, references like Hawaiian and like Hindu, spirituality, Buddhism. Kind of picks and chooses from these like non-Abrahamic relationships. religions and sort of like you know like it feels like a little fetishy fetishy and just like this new age spirituality stuff gets really kind of weird and like disrespectful. I mean honestly like she's probably like really nice in real life like I don't I don't think like she's intending to harm anyone I think she's just like really uneducated about what she's doing and like maybe like even though she definitely sees these comments like she probably thinks like they're wrong and doesn't like understand the context Anyway like I think her music is not not great, but the weirdest thing though like that I see is like people sexualizing her a ton on the internet. I see that a lot too But you know I have to say so let's like I you know I want to like make sure like I feel like I want to like walk a fine line here because I also see a lot of that and I don't think people should be like Doing that but at the same time a lot of these photos of her are I think Sex like I don't she had like she has an only fans. Yeah, I don't know how like acted. I honestly didn't look into that She doesn't have an only fans, but like I feel like people shouldn't be sexualizing her outside the context of her only fans I agree like like there's like people will just like they'll be like a photo of her and she like when she's like sitting in the car You know like she doesn't like she's not wearing like necessarily like sexual clothes or anything like I feel like it's weird Yeah, I agree with that like it's it's again It's like one of those things that's like there's like a fine line like when do people cross it? It's kind of hard to say, but Absolutely like it if you see a woman who's wearing like a bikini and she has big breasts, you know That's that doesn't give you an extinct that doesn't make it okay Yeah, just because like a woman is like just in like maybe a more sick sexually-suggestive manner doesn't like necessarily give you the like right to like sexualize her like like in writing, you know what I mean? Like I don't know it feels like a little bit weird But like again like I saw like a bit of a photo of her. She's literally just sitting in the car She isn't like wearing anything like Revealing or like she's just sitting in the car and then like people are like oh, I know she like Like well, it like makes a bunch like sexually explicit comments about like what it's like to have sex with her and just like regardless of like What a woman is wearing I feel like those kind of comments are very inappropriate and They're not critiquing her and like Or they're not like engaging with her in like good faith I agree because the truth is is like yes, I agree. I think I think the you know dreads plus making like hip-hop soul Are music with a lot of a a V.e. There's cultural appropriation there But that's not like there's not enough badness Going on there to justify her being all over my feed with a ton of hatred a lot of that hatred is obviously coming down to like There's a woman. I'm gonna sexualize her and I'm gonna like you know I mean like there's tons of musicians out there who do cultural appropriation. Yeah, and they're not going viral because they're not women Yeah, I think it's valid to like criticize her for these things like but like The one thing is like I feel like people are just like like We keep talking about her, you know like we can I guess we're doing it too, but like I Mean as like a news channel. We're like trying to report on things that are going on, you know, so there's that but It's like I'm right. I'm more just like tired of seeing her. Yes Yeah, like like just it's just like oversaturated. Yeah, it's a you know, I can't help but wonder you know She's probably at this point because she's so gone so viral probably making you know money off of Yeah, only fans or music streams like she she's actually monetizing her popularity So you know like if she releases a song that's like really really cringe You know she might be kind of doing that a little bit on purpose You know what I mean like at this point you know like possible like it's there might be like a little bit of like Oh, I'm noticing a lot of like I go viral. I feel like it's on ironic though Like I think she like I feel like she knows like people don't like like like like send it its cringe, but like I Feel like the music like I can't I don't know like I feel like she really like thinks this stuff is cool Yeah, maybe you're right about that. I mean, you know if this was sort of like a little bit of Playing it up for for for for virality then she's extremely committed to the bit because I mean she's like really she's like all out like this is her life So I think it's like yeah, like the one thing is like I feel like she's just has so many things on her body And by that I mean like on her person like so many piercing some like jewelry like clothes and accessories It's like I'm not judging it like besides a culturally appropriative part of it like It's more like how are you like for as a woman. I'm like this feels this looks like extremely uncomfortable to dress like this So that's that was my thought like how like you know what I mean Yeah, and It's kind of weird because all her songs are about like we're not all our song I don't know I haven't listened to all our songs, but it seems like whenever I hear her Performing it's very much like about doing mushrooms and acid Yeah, so a little bit of acid a little bit of shrooms did that treat just talk or was it you? Mm-hmm, so you know, I feel like This is where doing a lot of acid could end up taking you Like I feel like it makes sense like I feel like this is like it's if she if this is a bit that she's doing for attention Then she has then she's like doing an amazing job of like the best acting ever because it all makes so much sense but yeah, it's like I don't know there's the argument like is she harming anyone by doing this and I've seen like a lot of like Black and like indigenous people online say like You know say like they they do find it offensive and I get it because it's like they're using she's basically like using their culture and That like in like really bad music, you know like like you just using it for like the vibe of it like Because it like validates like how she wants to be seen rather than like I actually like really Appreciating and engaging with it. I don't know like I think that's like valid to critique Because it's it's very like I feel like she displays like a shallow appreciation slash understanding for like the cultures that she like borrows from I guess is what I'm trying to say. I'm not trying to be like I don't know. Does that make sense? It does like I understand what people are mad about it, but I don't know like I just I feel like You know again, it's like there are worse things going on in the world for sure There were things going on in the world and like I think the the criticism Has been way more heavy-handed than the crime and Like when I go to she's going viral all the time and when I see the replies and everything like that It's like it's almost like her virality feeds off the criticism like if she was like if she was making Music that wasn't problematic and again like how problematic is it? I'm not really sure. It's kind of it's always been a little bit of a hard thing to like Pinned down how it's really not my place to like say. Yeah, it's hard to say but Ultimately again, I think the criticism it's There's valid criticism to be made, but it's it's a lot like most of the criticism when I see her going viral. It's like Il she's so cringe, but also I want to have sex with her. Yeah, that's so annoying That's like the worst. That's the worst. Yeah, exactly That is the worst when you combine like oh she sets but she I want to like have sex with her That's like the worst possible thing. That's worse. That's worse than anything she did just kidding But I know I would say so I would say so like when I I feel like when I see her I see You know cultural appropriation bad, but I also see a lot of misogyny and like very simply Someone you know doing cultural appropriation and being cringe on the internet does not give you like permission to be a misogynist Yeah, and also like By like I don't know this kind of tweets on like Like only give her more attention, you know like so like if like people actually really want her to go away they probably Like should ignore her and just like let her fade into obscurity, I guess I don't know But then again here we are talking about it It needs to be talked about it needs to be talked about This is the most important this is the most important news happening in the world right now Yep All right, well do you have anything else to say? Any more thoughts? I hope that she ends up releasing an album that gets like a best new music from Pitchwork. That won't literally never happen, Kaya. You just asked if I had anything else, that was my last thought. That was your last thought, well that is a nice thing to think. She should, oh my goodness, someone needs to make a reality TV show with her and Gypsy Rose Blanchard. That would be really something. I feel like that would be like if you're a rich producer who's trying to put a show together, that's like the perfect example of something that you could do because you'd probably make a lot of money off of it, but you really shouldn't do because it's evil. I agree, I agree. Donald Trump, that's something Donald Trump would do. Put them on the apprentice, put them in jail, put Trump in jail, that's my last thought. That's my last thought of the day. Okay. Ending with a liberal bang. Okay, of course, the earthquake, the New York City earthquake was a liberal bang. Couldn't have said it better myself. All right, so if nice talking to you. Well, should we give our recommendations? Yes. Oh, yes. Can you go first? I forgot to pick one. I kind of forgot too, but I feel like I'm going to steal yours. And that is Mad Men, sorry, Kaya. Well, Kaya and I have been watching Mad Men and yes, it's too late. Like, we started really late, but it's really good, like, they were not lying. It is really good and it is like up there with breaking bad and like all those that are like critically claimed shows. And you know, there's like, I think Kaya and I are really interested in it because like, we are really familiar. We've studied like advertising and it's really, and we both love history and it combines that. And but I really like, like, it doesn't really like interesting, like character study, like on a lot of characters actually, like, I don't know, it's just, we're like three seasons then, we're almost on season four and like, we've been like super impressed and in a lot of ways, like, the way it like explores the characters, like, reminds me of succession too. And like the character relationships. So yeah, I definitely recommend if anyone hasn't already seen it, which I'm sure everyone already has, but yeah. Yes. Amazing. Alright, so I'm going to recommend the video game Celeste. It's a really fun game. So you know, I've seen a lot of like tweets and this and that and like buzz about this game for a while came out in 2018. And like a lot of people really like the main character who's, like, I guess she's like canonically trans and there's like a lot of like themes about like anxiety and depression and the game and stuff like that and like, that's not cool. But like, I kind of never got around to playing it because I thought like, I don't know if I'm ever really in a mood for like a game that has like a serious narrative. And I'm playing it and it's actually just like really, really, really fun. Like it's extremely like a very easy fun light game to play. And yes, it has like kind of like these deeper themes to it. But you know, if you're hesitant to play because you think it's a little bit too deep, I think you should play it because it's actually very, very accessible and fun and easy to pick up and play and then the narratives that get a little bit deeper here and there, that's like a nice fun, a nice fun aspect of it as well that shouldn't deter you from playing. Well, that was lovely. Thank you, Kaya. Yes, a video game recommendation, pretty epic. All right. Indeed. All right.
