The Marchenko-Knies Trade and Connor Bedard Joins!
79m 16s
The show analyzes a major trade between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Columbus Blue Jackets, in which the Leafs acquire Carl Marchenko from the Blue Jackets in exchange for Matthew Nies. While the trade is seen as a significant win for Toronto—especially given Marchenko’s elite offensive skill and dynamic play—the Blue Jackets gain a reliable, cost-controlled forward. The analysis reveals that Marchenko, a beloved and likable player, is a franchise cornerstone whose departure is deeply disappointing for fans, especially given his history of success and positive on-ice persona. The trade underscores a recurring NHL issue: teams in rebuilding phases frequently lose key players, creating cycles of instability. The show also highlights the return of Connor Bedard, whose first interview reveals his growth and comfort as a player, offering fans a positive, relatable narrative. A key point of discussion involves the use of language, specifically the term “boy” when referring to Bedard, which sparks a conversation about racial sensitivity in sports media. Additionally, the team reflects on broader franchise challenges, such as the Blue Jackets’ persistent struggles with player retention and identity. The show concludes by emphasizing that while the trade appears to benefit the Leafs on paper, it exposes deeper systemic issues in team stability and long-term planning across the league. A final twist includes a surprise statistical insight: Logan Thompson leads the league in goaltender performance odds, showing that even in the absence of major news, data-driven analysis reveals unexpected trends.
It is Tuesday, September 29th, hockey day in the United States and Canada, and this is a show called "What Chaos" on the ringer network. My name is David Bean and boss Massachusetts, I sit beside B. Blackburn and holding it down in the city of not hockey day in the United States and Canada. It's Sean Depaz. What a big boss. Welcome to another season. How does it feel, Sean? You're without. You're without today. Although I did see your tweet this morning that you were, you don't really care about hockey today because it's not Red Sox Yankees. We got a bigger fish to fry and his name is Camp Flitler. I mean, I can't say I'm obviously not going to do this. Probably. I'm going to two screen tonight. Well, yeah. I mean, of course. Yeah. Oh, I'm, I'm going to be doing like five screens. We'll, I don't, we're, we're saving the slate for a little later. I know what games are happening. Any overlap? I'm watching it all, man. All the matters is an overarching sentiment. We're fucking back. We're so back. We are back. And just, there's a big night. It's a big night. It's a big night. Yeah. No, no sabers tonight, but we have our hands full and we've got our hands full on the show today. Pete, what are we doing today on the show? Let us discuss Marchenko, my goodness. Carl Marchenko. The trade finally happened. We're going to talk about that. Lots to sink into, but I will say straight up. My internal data says that this fucking sucks, brother. This is bad for us. This is bad for business. I hate it so much. Connor Bdard returns to the show. We sat down with him last week in Chicago. Much to the dismay of all the people who said that that would never happen again after our first interview. He was one of our first guests in the history of the show. We really kind of, I guess, just like announced how we would be doing interviews with that one. And if you go back and look at the YouTube comments on the original Connor Bdard video, it was like, who the fuck are these guys? What are they doing? They will never sit down with this guy again. Bdard's in hell. Spoiler alert. We asked Bdard why he sat down with us. He was like, I had fun the first time. I never felt bad about that interview. I was back in my beat days. Steve Buckley from the Boston Harold, now the athletic, one of the legends. I would do my stupid shit in addition to whatever reporting I was doing. And Buck was like, hey, all these people are going to roll their eyes at you and talk shit behind your back. And then they're going to steal the quotes that you get from the ridiculous that like if you, if you're doing off the beaten path shit, fucking do it. And that was always what we were going to do on this show. We came out swinging big time and I will say the haters were there. This interview, I had even more fun because Bdard is clearly more comfortable in his own skin. He's three years older. He's the boy is thick these days. He's huge. He's bulky. But yeah, he's clearly settling into his NHL skin. So stay tuned for that. You're going to want to hear that interview. Pete's question. I know what that is. Should I reveal it? Let's see. Yes, but there's actually two questions you have. I have in the rundown to set you up for a question you had about one of the teams we're discussing, which is very good. I don't really give a fuck about that. It's more a question you asked me before the show, a fact-based question. I don't want to say that we're doing trivia on this show. But I could not fucking get it and I submitted a hundred guesses and we're just going to keep that going. Okay. All right. Yeah, we'll hit that later in the show after the Bdard interview. And then finally, the slate has shifted. Yeah. Sean updated the slate for this season. Let's call it Pennywise because that's a slate shifter. Because Pennywise was shaping the show, not my best, but shut out Tim Curry. You know, he died. He did. Yeah. It's a real bummer. So everybody, I know that hockey's back tonight, but if you could just real moment of silence, please. If you could think about Tim Curry, please, oh, yeah, Sean, we really skipped over the. I'm kind of upset at the chat, they let the Pete saying that boy's thick, just go without any kind of, uh, I don't think I've got, I don't think I ended up putting, uh, you see how this looks, right? Yeah, that's just one of my personal, you see how this looks, right? I feel like the use of boy, it's not like non-racism sector. I was going to say boy, I'm certainly selective to like who I say, like boy, too, but like, well, like, that's my boy, like that's that boy thick. It's just a man. Sean's going to start saying that boy ain't right every time he says anything. Uh, all right. Let's begin. Leafs and blue jackets pull off a big trade before the start of the season. Carole Marchenko is a leaf, Matthew Nies is a blue jacket. The Leafs get great graphic from Sean. Carole Marchenko, who signed a six times 12 and a half million dollar per extension miles wood, who has three years left at two and a half million per Elvis Merzleekens blue jackets are going to retain 18% of that 5.4 million dollar cap hit. The blue jackets receive Matthew Nies 23 year old forward five more years left at that 7.75 million dollar cap hit. Even Lorentz 30 year old forward two years left at 1.35 a meal Andre who was traded to the Leafs this off season did not get to play a single game. He pulled a real Mike Babcock didn't get to, uh, didn't end up draw really doing the job before he was shall we say reassigned shout out to my short king. No. Yes. What's with a meal is getting traded a lot. If your name is a meal, are you more likely to get traded a bunch in a short amount of time? Who else we got. Emile Heinemann. Okay. Yeah. No, that he's been traded a million times despite being pretty young and early on in his career. 24 year old, uh, is a left defenseman is a meal Andre, although he plays both sides two years left at 1.55 million dollars and the blue jackets get a conditional 2027 second round pick. This will be the later of Columbus or Winnipegs second round picks. We will go deep here. We will go long here because this is a trade that I think surprised us all. I think we all expected something was going to happen with Carl Marchenko. We never really understood why Carl Marchenko wanted out, but that much was made clear since draft night when Kevin Week said it on the broadcast on ESPN. I didn't expect and none of us expected Matthew Nies to be moved for Carl Marchenko. This is a deal in which Columbus, I think, did better for themselves than I could have expected. But I will say, as we get into the analyzing of this trade and the analysis, let's remember the Leafs got the best player in this deal. And I would say by quite a bit, um, I don't, yeah, I mean, like, I think there's two differences here. It's like Marchenko, I consider like a play driver and a, an elite top line forward. I think that Nies is more of a complimentary player. But yeah, I think that Marchenko is the best player in the deal and when you're talking about a blockbuster trade between big names, I always feel like the team that gets the best player wins that deal. And that's not to say that Columbus didn't do like a good job with a bad situation, but I hesitate to say like, oh man, like great job getting out of the Marchenko situation and coming away with a player like Nies. Because the last time that I had a feeling like that, I know it's going to be, it's Jonathan Huberdo going to Calgary, like we all had the feeling like, damn, Matthew could chuck one it out. They got Huberdo and plus, plus like that's pretty good, great work. So I often hesitate to kind of lean into that. But yeah, like Nies is a cost control asset that they're going to have until 2031. He's skilled. He's like got an archetype that is really, really valuable. He's a big body. I like, I like Matthew Nies as a player. I really wanted the Bruins to get him when it sounded like he was going to be traded every day for the past two years. But Marchenko going to the Leafs is awesome. I think he's going to fit in really well with that top six. He's a great player. He's super dynamic. It's just so upsetting that a guy that I really, really, really want to root for ends up on a team that I can't possibly hope good things happen to them. And then the other layer of it is that the Bruins were in on it, but going back to what I said yesterday, like the Bruins were never going to be able to match a trade. And a lot of other teams weren't going to be able to match a trade where the centerpiece is Matthew Nies going back to the other. Yeah. And not only did the Blue Jackets get Matthew Nies, the Blue Jackets also dumped salary, which they needed to do. And it stinks if like part of the W in making a trade is that you were able to dump salary. They move on from Elvis Mersleek as they move on from Miles Wood, who was on waivers. You know how much cap space the Blue Jackets have after making that trade? Not much. 93,000 bucks. Yeah. Okay. So there's still, there's still in a tough space for this year. But going forward and you mentioned the cost-controlled asset that is, is Matthew Nies. I don't love doing the, would you rather have this contract or that contract thing because it's usually guys that are up at different times. This is close enough that I do think it is fair to ask. Starting next season for the next five years, would you rather have?
have Carole Marchenko at 12 and a half million dollars, or would you rather have Matthew Nies at 7.75 million dollars? Carole Marchenko. I think there's a real conversation to be had there. The answer is, if you're the Leafs, Carole Marchenko, because you've got Gavin McKenna on a rookie contract. So who fucking cares? Like, that's the savings right there. And Marchenko is a better player. I still do think though, Blue Jackets did well for themselves. They were in a shitty situation, which is not untraveled territory for them. They're always in a fucking shitty situation and they go from, they go from Carole Marchenko to Matthew Nies. Matthew Nies is a player that everybody would like to have on their team, but you want to have Matthew Nies in addition to your honest to goodness first line winger. And Matthew Nies is more of a like a modern Milan luchich kind where it's like, if he's on your, you can put him on your first line, you can put him on your second line. He ain't driving the play. If he's with good players, he's gonna compliment them perfectly because he's an ass kicker and he plays really tough and he's like your prototypical power forward, but he's not Carole Marchenko in terms of his skill to size combination. And that brings the point to Adam Fantilly has a lot of pressure on him now. Like if you're going to pair, if you're going to pair Nies with Fantilly or whoever you're going to pair him with like that, that center now has a lot of pressure on them to drive play and to produce with a compliment, a really good complimentary player on their wing. But for a long time, Marchenko was the driver on that first line. Yeah. And I hate to say it because I love Adam Fantilly. We all do. Friend of the show. Carole Marchenko is probably about to get his best center play that he's had in the NHL. I don't, assuming he's with Tavarez, but Tavarez, but he could be with Austin Matthews. And if it's with Austin Matthews, then it's going to be by far the best center play that he's had. But assuming they, I think that they're doing like a Roslovak, Matthews, Neelander thing right now, which good enough, then who'd be on that second line there with Tavarez and Marchenko. Yeah. Oh, you can surprise Gavin McKenna. Yeah. So there you fucking go. That top six. The top six is good. Is it rock? Yeah. That top six is. And if Easton Cowan can take a big step, like he could be in the top six, like their top six is really good. I mean, I'm the biggest hater in the world, but if you're talking about a year to year rebuild and rebuilding on the fly, they've done some really good fucking work. Yeah. The biggest point I want to get across in analyzing, in reacting to this trade is that I think the Leafs did good work. It's a tough pill to swallow trading Matthew Nies because there are so few of them in league and everyone's trying to get one. And when they were rumors last year, and reports that they were close to making a deal and it fell through, everyone was like, why are you trading that guy? I think this ends up being much better use of moving on from Matthew Nies because you're taking a young forward and getting a better young forward. And talking about the previous Nies trade that almost was Ken, Ken Hughes had to be an absolute hell yesterday. He struck out on the, well, I guess he didn't strike out on the Nies trade at the deadline. He just missed the deadline and was a minute late and didn't get the trade. And then the guy that he spent reportedly all summer trying to get Marchenko ends up going for the guy that he almost had. So he couldn't trade for the guy who ended up getting traded for the guy who he couldn't trade for. Talk about being in fucking hell yesterday. Like Ken Hughes had some awesome, awesome body work in Montreal. That's a tough one to swallow. Sean, how do you feel about this trade? Yeah, I mean, same way as Pete does it obviously sucks, but it's funny what you're saying about the, like, no one predicted it because I, yeah, I agree, no one predicted it. But as soon as the trade happened, I was like, why didn't anybody predict this? It was clear that the leaves had a willingness to move off, like you were saying, move off Nies for like seemingly less and a less impactful return. It just seemed like a, in hindsight, obviously, like a perfect match. But yeah, I mean, I, hey, Karol Marchenko is the enemy now, and that sucks because he's incredibly likable. Yeah. We'll talk about how likable Karol Marchenko is in a couple of minutes. Blue jackets now. They get Matthew Nies back and their offense takes a hit. They've at least figured out what their roster is going to look like this season, which was a big question. Elvis Merzlikens is gone, which is I think something that was overdue to happen. I don't know that Merzlikens was always the happiest camper and I don't think that affected the room too positively. Insane to me that Demetri Voronkov is the, the final remaining, is the remaining Russian of those three buddies, Chinakov, Marchenko and Voronkov. Marchenko looked like a borderline franchise player and he ends up wanting out, which is just a fucking heartbreaker. I, I do think they did good work in getting this returned though. Like I returned. I didn't think that they were going to get a player as good as Matthew Nies or a contract as good as Matthew Nies back in this deal. So I, I say to Don Woodell, like, good work. You made the best of a shitty situation. The problem is, and I saw Shayna tweet this and I was like, God damn it. I want to say that on the show there in an oops, all middle six forward situation in Columbus right now. And some of that, you say middle six is a little complimentary because you don't know how much longer Charlie coil is even going to be a middle six forward as he begins that contract. There in a really as they kind of always are murky situation and you asked, are they becoming the Kraken? Well, I mean, yeah, I asked because of the, the all middle six forwards, like are they now Kraken East, but the problem with the Kraken that we've consistently ascribed is, is that they don't have like a franchise player. Obviously Columbus has that with Zach Ranske right now. So I, you know, basketball book, but I, you said like they made the best of a shitty situation. I think the bigger picture discussion here is, why is the shitty situation just evergreen in Columbus? They just have guys who are constantly asking out. And I think like the, the biggest problem here is that they knew they were not going to keep Marchenko and what's the reasoning for that? And Marchenko wouldn't even give that to Don Woodell. Don Woodell saying like, I couldn't get a straight answer out of this guy as to why he would not resign in Columbus. And like for somebody who has wanted to see that team get over the hump, succeed, find its place of relevance in the NHL. It is really frustrating and really demoralizing that every time they seem like they're on the bubble and about to maybe take that next step, the floor falls through and they lose their franchise players. And like that is so, so disappointing. And I feel for Blue Jackets fan like even though you get knives back and you made the best of a shitty situation, it's really hard to constantly find yourself in the shitty situation. Yeah. I mean, a couple of years ago, they were, I mean, I can't remember whether this was pre or post, good draw, but like with where Marchenko was trending with, they got a guy in Fantilly with drafting Caden Lindstrom like it's, it seemed so clear that they were, they were happening. And you're right every time it seems they're happening. And they obviously post, good draw tragedy. They almost make the playoffs and you're like, yes, this is moving in the right direction. And I feel like it's always, it's not even one step forward, two steps back. For a while now, the Blue Jackets have been one step forward, one step back. Right. They just stay in the same place or two steps forward, two steps back. It's crazy. And it's not a mushy middle thing. It is a, it's not mushy. It is hell. Yeah. It sucks. Sean, you got something. Sorry, buddy. Well, just, I didn't want to interrupt this conversation, but there is some pretty massive breaking news. Yeah. And Brock Faber apparently took a puck to the head, fractured skull and got surgery with no timetable for return. That's really, really brutal, awful, really brutal. And I believe it was during a preseason game and the puck to the head was like, got hit in the, like the helmet. Yeah. That's what I've seen a fractured skull while getting hit in the helmet is crazy, but I see some guardian. I was just about to say who's saying the guardian cap thing first. I'm hesitant to, but God damn it, that sucks. I mean, that would actually help, though, like I don't feel like the guardian cap does anything in the NFL. It would help in this situation. Chad asks a good question about the Blue Jackets after this. Could you at least say that they're finding an identity as like, oops, I'll beef. Yeah. Kind of like B.E. tough customers because they do have tough customers. He talked about it. Veronque of, uh, uh, Neutrushkin, nice. So I was going to say the problem is we said that before they made this great. So they had that already. They didn't need it.
to lose Karel Marchenko to attain that status. - Yeah, so like they do have an identity. I just don't know if you want your identity identity to be like across the board. - I've got a card of Garland still on that team. - Yeah, fair, that's true. Oops, oops, I'll beef, plus, oops. What happened to the rest of this guy? I did want to point out, like as a hater, like I don't want to root against Karel Marchenko. My hand has been forced, so I will point out Karel Marchenko stinks towards the end of seasons. I don't know if you guys have looked into the numbers, but like once March hits, that guy's kind of a shell of himself. So, I believe-- - Welcome to Toronto, pal. - Yeah, that's just perfect. - I believe, and if I'm profiling here, I apologize. I believe that was a thing with some of that trio, I discussed, with Barankov, Inchenikov, and Marchenko, that fading over the course of the season is something that happens. And I saw a lot of people deciding that that's who bonus was talking about at the end of the season. And I said, folks, we're not doing that. We are never talking shit about Karel Marchenko. - Andrew Raycroft decided otherwise. - Yeah, well, yeah, Andrew Raycroft said that he showed up to camp out a shape. I don't know, I don't know about that. - I'm gonna need to hear it from Raycroft before I believe it. - Yeah, I needed from bones, I needed from somebody, not to doubt Andrew Raycroft. I believe that somebody told Andrew Raycroft that. - Yeah. - God be careful with those things. Yeah, this is sad for us because Karel Marchenko is just beloved by all three of us. He's a great personality. One of the funniest guys in the NHL, just a really warm dude, really friendly, but just fucking hilarious. He did his first ever podcast with us a few years ago during our first season, it was a blast. He's been on with us multiple times, both as a guest and as a translator for Demetri Veronkov. We fear that this means we don't get as much of that going forward. - Yeah, I mean, I would say the fear is very solidified. - Very warranted. - Yeah. - The fear suggested a podcast to fucking any of their people. - Yeah, we've never gotten a leaf before. I don't feel good about that, but I might bang extra hard on the door. When it, 'cause I've been like, "Hi, can we have Austin Matthews?" And they're like, "No, we're like, okay, whatever. "We're gonna wait five minutes and Austin Matthews "is gonna do something funny, "and we're gonna show that clip on our show. "We'll be fucking fine with Austin Matthews content." This, if they're like, "Oh no, we don't feel "that it's a fit, I'll be like. "I tell you what's a fit with Karel Marchenko." - Frankly. I fear that Toronto may kill his whimsy and beat him down. - No, but they're fun. Some of those Toronto guys are fun. - You see? - Yeah, but they make it criticized for being fun. - Yeah, well, don't listen to the haters. Okay, that's the number one, that's the Connor Bedard first interview rule. - Don't don't read the comments. - The good news is, and Sean pointed this out yesterday, like, yeah, we may never speak to Marchenko again, but now Dora's open from Matthew Nies. - Yes, he seems very fun. - I, idea, we offer to talk to leafs players from one of John Chyka's 50 Wendy's franchises, or one of his five Tim Hortons franchise. - A real cross-promotional opportunity. - Yes, that's, oh, I mean, we'll quit pro quo. - Mike get on the horn with sales after this. Us doing a Wendy's sponsorship would be. - It's gotta be Wendy's Canada. Wendy's Canada? - Yeah, gotta be changed the spice chicken sandwich back though. - Did you know about that? - No. - They inshidified the spicy chicken sandwich. - I mean, didn't they inshidify their menu? I remember Wendy's came out and, like, acknowledged that they had done cost-cutting measures on their burgers and their food, and they pulled the burger king, which was like, "Hey, we know that our food sucks. We're working on it." - No, Burger King's fucking track. - Burger King trash. - It's rather believable. - Yeah, they changed the spice chicken sandwich to, like, it doesn't have the, like, peace of lettuce anymore. It's shredded lettuce, and I think that there's pickles on it now. I think they really dicked around. That ain't right. That was the best fast food item I know about. - I would say the Baconator would be the best fast food burger out on the market, but I haven't had one in a long time, so. - That was kinda rip. I wanted to bring this up while we were on Leafs Talk. Did you see that their, like, hashtag on Twitter for this season is #PassionNeverSleeps? - Yes. - Which is just the dumbest that everyone else is like, you know, go down the road. - Go down the neighborhood. - They're also really leaning into that. - Yeah, they're leaning into that. - The #PassionNeverSleeps. - That's on there, like, Rally Towers and Game One. It just has past and never sleeps. - Yeah. - Yeah, so I did see that as well. Which, I feel like that's kind of disrespecting the importance of sleep. - Sleep? - And the fact that, like, if you were to, if I were to ask you, who's the sleeping giant of the NIHL, it would probably be the original Six Franchise, that doesn't want anything in 60 years. And you'd call them a giant? - I mean, that's Ronald. The brand is a giant. It's like a sleeping giant and college football is normally just like a big brand that's sucked forever. - Listen, at least that they, at least they came up with a slogan that doesn't, like, actively insult their team this year. - Or require a partial way. - Which is a step in the right direction. - Yes. - No gritts, no grittness. - No grittness. - There's not a single one of these that's like a phrase. Or like, that's like a. - Dare to be different. That would have been better than passion never sleeps. - If it was just dare to be different? - No, I was saying dare being different. - No, I know, but I'm just saying. Also, it sounds too much like the city that never sleeps. There's two teams there. - Yeah, okay, give us, for any folks who don't know Karol Marcchenko, well, Sean, we tossed together some highlights of him. - Yeah, he's very tall. - But is this guy stronger? - Power. - Subitone target. - Subitone target. - Yes, exactly. - Fiddle, if we'd say like. - He would be friends, but I feel like it's like. - Jiroff, or. - Jiroff? - How about music? - Oh, I don't know what's the music. - You don't listen to music? - Just in general. - Yeah, I just. - Like, even Russian music? - No. - No, no, I don't have a. - Do you know Apple music? - Yeah. - I don't have Apple music. - You don't have a. Do you have Spotify? - No. - Nothing, really. - Just. Yeah, I don't know how it's work, but. I'm. - I'm shit-songer. I can't, like, artist, nothing. - No, with that attitude, we could get you some lessons, bud. - No, yeah. - Yeah, I. No, it's not don't help. My wife tried it, but it doesn't work. - Do you read a lot? - Or. - It's kind of for losers. - I wanna say yes, but no. - Reading is. - Should people say yes 'cause they sound. - Yeah, I read one book for one day. - Yeah. - Fuck it. - Reading, yeah. - You're gonna have to move for it. - Here's Dr. Seuss. He's ahead of his time. - Yeah, forget about it. - Times of chance. - Oh, yeah, oh, yeah. We fucking old and washed. Just looking back on clips, we were like, readings for fucking losers. Meanwhile, like, 15 bucks a year, whoops. - God damn it. - Pete is nothing without his books. I mean, that's truly, I got nothing. He's all I got. Pete walks around with books, extras in case one breaks down. He's so charming. He's such a good guy and. Yeah, I hate to do like, they'll like, we'll miss him thing, but. - Lord carry him now. - Yeah, no one that we leave. Toronto doesn't have any Russians, do they? - Uh. - So you're gonna be alone. So you're gonna be rosky. Oh, oh, yeah, fair enough. So that's, who's there's something there? Yeah. Elvis Merzikens, although he's Latvian. - He's not, yeah, he's not Russian. - Yeah, not Russian. Apologies to Elvis Merzikens. Yeah, this is, it's sad because it's such, like, this is a good move from the Leafs. And I haven't been online enough to know how people are reacting to this. - I think a lot of Leafs fans loved Matthew and I, since they're really upset about losing Matthew and I, which like I get, I understand. But you, I think, hopefully the anger there is a little misplaced because of unfamiliarity with Kroermarchenko's game. - Yeah, that's what we're gonna do with Kroermarchenko. - Yeah. - A lot of people are about to learn Kroermarchenko. - Yeah, that's what I said when we were doing the stocks chat. I was like, if Kroermarchenko gets traded and he goes to a big market, people are gonna find out about Kroermarchenko. And there may not be a bigger market than Toronto for better or for worse. Kroermarchenko is about to be a household name. And we had to, that had to be kind of handed to us, our guy Todd from the Blue Jackets when we were first talking about doing stuff with them. He was like, I don't know how much you guys watch Kroermarchenko, but you should. He's unbelievable. So we started watching Kroermarchenko and we're like, oh my God. Columbus has an unbelievable young right wing who's gonna score up a trillion goals in this league and seems to have a personality. That fucking rocks and then we had him on the show and we were like, oh my God, where is the NHL been hiding this guy? This is the guy that they should be putting in all these ads and everything. So I think a lot of people are gonna experience it just as we, you know, everyone's gotta hear the song for the first time somewhere. - The all Russian line was really one of the cooler things that nobody knew about. I feel like nothing better to me than a line full of foreigners from the same country. Like Canadians and Americans,
whatever, but like, unless it's like, unless they're all French or something, shout out the French connection. But like, I like to check out a live. Yep, yeah, like I love to do that. It's so rare, I feel like. It's the line where they found out how Chuck's mix. Well, they did. Another potential sponsorship. We told you we'd have Cardin Bredard back. I don't think we ever did. Do we ever say that we were gonna try to get Cardin Bredard back? We never, oh no, we tried two ones, and I think he was in the middle of a quite a bad season when we got, and he was hurt. When we had hall, yeah, when we had hall, Fulino and Vlasik, he was hurt. And yeah, they were kind of fighting through it. And that was when, I think that was in Bredard's second year. And people were making Blackhawk stuff about Bredard. And we, that was like the Pond Hockey year. Yeah, so he was just like, not having the best time. I was never, I'm not just saying this. I was never on board with that. Go back and check the tape. To a certain degree, I think it was warranted, but you're crazy. You're crazy if you're selling Bredard stock. I said it last year. I said it rookie year. I'll say it again. I'm absolutely buying Bredard stock. And I think this might be the year you start to see that the pop happened to a more significant degree. Well, I think the pop that needs to happen is just that the team needs to be better. Because the team needs to be better and he needs to say healthy. Yeah, and he's going to begin the season out. We talk a little bit about that with him. They say that he's out probably the first month of the season. We're not doctors, but peeping the pre-practice skates and everything. It seems like he's kind of doing most of the stuff. So you're never surprised if someone rushes back. You're fucking crazy. If you think that I'm going to set us up to be angry Blackhawk fans to be like, you just wouldn't be surprised. Because teams usually intentionally will overshoot it. So then when they're back early, it's like, oh, hell yeah. Here's our conversation with Blackhawk's captain, Connor Bredard. What do you say to people who say that you don't look like a captain because you aren't bald like Nick Flino? It's actually a good point. I'd have to look around the league. The percentage of bald guys that a captain's probably pretty high. I looked there wise. How is life different with the sea? I mean, so far, not too different. I think maybe more responsibility. Well, there's planning stuff or whatever. But we've got a lot of guys help with that. But I don't think really change as much. He wants to ask the most important question. Oh, yeah. My first question has got to be like, why did you agree to do this with us again? You were 18 years old. No, it was fun. We ambushed the hell out of you. We didn't even really have a show at that point. Why'd you do this again? I thought it was good. It's been a while. I did it with Corks, right? Yeah. So I think we both enjoyed it. And yeah, you guys have gotten a lot bigger since then. I feel like so, you know, testament to you guys. So likewise. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But no, I thought it was fun. Yeah, that was one of our favorites because everybody was like, you know, he's going through all this stuff. And there's so much pressure on him or whatever. And we're like, OK, well, he's not going to give us a better hockey answer than he's giving everybody else. So let's just try to have him breathe for a minute. Year four is pressure any different or like is your relationship with pressure any different versus when you came into the league? For sure. Yeah, I think probably like my first two years. It's obviously changed changing your life. But, you know, there's some ways I feel like I could have dealt with stuff better. But you just learn as you go. And I think kind of this last year, two years, I feel a lot more. Just like myself, just having fun playing hockey. And that's kind of what I value. And so I think you just learn as you go and get better with it every day. One of our favorite things about you is how mad you get sometimes on the ice. Like, it all culminated. I think in a great moment with Utah, like when you were healed that game and you got into the thing with the fan, what's the angriest you've been while playing hockey? Good question. That's some I'm trying to try to tone down too, probably. But I can't think of one. I mean, there's a lot of moments where you're pretty pressured. I was actually I was trying the summer, even summer just like never be mad, you know? Or like channeling your anger in a better way. Something that I think, yeah, even the first years, a lot of stick breaks, a lot of stuff like that. So try to be better in that way. How do you like try to channel it? Because in some ways it's good. Right. Yeah, yeah. Even like that with like a fan or something. Like I remember, I was just playing bad one game and I tried to like make myself a little anger, kind of get into something a little bit. And then it motivates you maybe. So if you do it like that, I think it's a good thing. But you're being a little baby or something. It's obviously not not channeling it the right way. So I think if it's at a person or at your your game in the right way, it definitely helps. Got some amazing faces out of it though. Like this is the greatest. Yeah, there's a lot of good. Or I mean, I just like Google's Conor Bedard face. Yeah, when you're on camera all the time, you're going to get out some good ones. And it's I definitely can can show expression. So I think it's funny though. Have you seen your your face game in NHL? I haven't seen it, but I know that like guys across the league. I haven't seen it, I haven't seen it. Is mine pretty really? I don't know. I haven't seen it. But I've seen some bad ones. Yeah. But I haven't seen mine. So I'm going to I see I saw Zegress say that he sends Caulfield his every morning. Yeah, it's so bad. And his is bad. It's really terrible. Like someone on our team out of pretty bad one. I feel like all of our more had like one of the better ones. Really? Yeah, Frankie. Mine out of battle. It did want to ask like what's helped you feel like more comfortable in your own skin over the last few years just based on is it just the experience? Or is it the team kind of transitioning to be more in line with like your age group? Well, like what what does help the most? Yeah, I think it's probably more internal. I let myself breathe a little bit. Obviously, you know, growing up, you deal with less adversity in in leagues that aren't quite as hard. So you maybe if you're playing well, you're happy. If you're not, you're not. And I think you got to separate the two a little bit life and hockey and think just doing a better job at that and just realizing that, you know, how lucky we are to do this and just have fun with it. So probably the message I tell myself a lot. Your player's Tribune thing was very good. A lot of it was about just like I wants to fucking win. Yeah, where do you think this team is now? And like specifically with the Byron trade, like a lot of people freaked out. They were like, oh, you shouldn't trade picks that high and everything. How did you feel? Because you added a really good young player. And I'm sure that you're like, let's, let's go. Let's get some guys here. Yeah. No, we were fired up. I mean, you pick fourth overall. You hope it's going by. I mean, he's a fourth overall. I'll pick literally. And you're extremely happy if it's someone that good. And he's been, he got your after the team with Kemmikar, and then he goes to the team with Dallin. And you're not going to take their job. So he's a number one demon. He's going to be great, and he's going to change our team. He's going to log minutes, first unit power play, first pair. So I'm excited for him, too, to get this opportunity. And he was drafted to be that guy. And that's who he is. So it's going to be good. I know you're really competitive. So it's probably hard to feel it in the moment. But also, how much value do you put in some of the tougher times leading up to hopefully what's to come and like the climb? And I know you're like a big basketball fan watching the nicks this year, overcome just like all the shit that's been attached to them and break through it and see the reward on the other side from the city and from the fan base. How much do you think about that when you think about your future here in Chicago? For sure, all the time. It's funny. You mentioned that I feel like not even as a nicks fan. Just like that was the most emotion. Maybe I've ever felt watching sports, just like seeing them win at it, seeing the city. And that's what it would be like here, obviously, if we won, if the Bears won, when the Cubs won, it's-- I think you do look at those times and you go through it together, like coming in with guys and adding pieces and losing and trying to figure out ways to win. And we feel we're at a point now where the expectation is the win. And that's an exciting part, whether we do or not. But we're overly confident that we're going to. Do you think-- I mean, when you got hurt last year, it was mid-December, I want to say. But team was 500-ish, a point out of the playoffs. It's not like this team was picking fourth overall the entire season. So when you look at this group now, are you like, you know what? Yeah, obviously, you expect to take steps forward, but you don't want to put a limit on it. For sure, we were in and out of the playoffs, switching every day till basically the Olympic break. I think kind of mid-January is one. Maybe we started-- we went on a little losing streak and we couldn't really find it. But we look at last year's almost like a missed opportunity, I think. Obviously, I feel probably when I came back from injury, I didn't produce it quite the same level. And those frustrations individually as a team. And we just know where we can be. We saw it last year. we had a bow, we had a canner, we had these guys. I think we're a better--
team now, everyone's a year older. So there's no reason we can't we can't go go do that. You still think you're going to miss like the first month. We don't have to talk so much about the injury thing, but like they say it's going to be a month. Yeah. Do you think it's going to be a month? I don't know. I mean, I'm just doing what I can. It feels really good. I'm out there doing basically everything on the ice. So who knows? That's obviously not really up to me in the end. You know, I play right now if I could, but you know, a lot smarter people that can make that decision. But we'll see. Just kind of do what I can on day to day. I know that when you've been rehabbing, you've been skating on your own before the practices and everything. Now that you're captain, aren't you worried that looks like you're putting yourself before the team? Yeah, it is weird a little bit like you get to see and you're just not really around the guys. But I get in the room with them for like 10 minutes, probably the best 10 minutes on my day. You know, just just just shooting it for a bit. But no, that's a good point. How much more challenging is it mentally to get hurt like in the summer and then see things ramp back up like the team get back together? I'm sure it's really hard right now when there's all this excitement about the season being starting and the guys being out there versus in season and, you know, missing time there. It's a bit of a weird feeling, you know, even just like new guys coming in or what line you're going to be on power play like all that stuff kind of building chemistry. But out of the day, it is what it is. You know, I feel obviously you make a decision in the summer to do that. But it is almost harder once you're ramping back up and stuff than when you're in a slaying, doing nothing all day, you know, because then you feel like I can't do anything. But now it's like I could play, you know, but obviously you don't you want to be safe and you want to do the right protocols and stuff. But I'm just excited to get back and obviously watch the guys start the year. What do you do other than rehab when you're injured to kill the time? Yeah, Ray, when I got hurt, I remember that crush love Island pretty hard for like the first few days and then but then once you get home and stop you're just hanging out with with your buddies and whatnot and I'm kind of at the ring for the same amount of time like when I skate they're working out and vice versa and then we we go hang out, we go for lunch, whatever. So once the if the guys are on the road and I'm not there then obviously you got to fill your time a bit more. But right now I'm living pretty normally. It's the does it bum you out that you're going to be set to return like right around the start of Grand Theft Auto coming out? Yeah, is it what is it six? The one that's never been out or anything so I mean some of the boys will be maybe maybe maybe you might be the only guy in the ice. I know some of the boys will be playing a little worse maybe at that time. It's also going to say that the other day. Yeah, it was Steven Adams. Yeah, he's just like we're talking about that yesterday. Look at the stat lines across the league before and after that that game comes out. Well famously that like didn't Kyler Murray have worse every time there's a new college duty. Yeah, numbers plummeted. Unbelievable. Did you see the Odyssey? I did. What'd you think? It's okay like it's not really really for me. I don't know the story and stuff. I feel like people that love it are like into the like pathology whatever you're like it's probably above my IQ level some of it. So I thought it was good though like it's cool. I just didn't really get it. Have you heard the song Choosing Texas? Yeah. Okay, a lot of people a lot of people would say no. I haven't. I've never heard it. What? How? I listen to the songs that are already on my phone. It's a big gym locker room song. Yeah, but even like any sports event you go to I feel like they play it like out there, you know? Yeah, there is so that there's a lot of discourse about it because it's broken records for being like the longest running number one single whatever and a lot of people are like how can that be? I haven't heard the song. So some people think it doesn't exist. I didn't know that. It's an easy search. Who's like the biggest star in the world to you? The most famous person. Yeah, definitely no. Like genuinely, I don't know Justin Bieber maybe. That's a pretty good one. I mean, I was expecting somebody that like I wouldn't know or like would be kind of like Bieber is around my age. I was just thinking like most famous. Yeah. Caner. It's fair. Yeah. That's got to be exciting. Stop there. Yeah. Would Messi be in the next? Messi's like always there. Well, you're you're just like a huge huge huge sports guy right? Like just yeah, I'm pretty into it. Maybe in America like Josh Allen's probably right now the biggest. Is that the guy Sean? He's probably a bill fan. Yeah, I did want to ask you what do you think of the the Jalen Brown trade? I mean, I was pretty shocked at the return. Yeah, just because like I mean Paul Georgia's obviously play as older than Brown, but maybe I don't know. Both teams obviously got what they want. I guess. Do you think Philly is going to be good or do you think that's going to be a disaster? No, I think they'll be pretty sick. I maybe the best starting five ever. No, I'm not going to stay it. Don't say it would be better than that. I can't see that crashing and burning with LeBron. No, LeBron's going to average like 12 and like 10 though and people are going to say he's like washed, but then like whenever someone doesn't play, we got like 30, you know, that's what I think. Yeah, he's just adaptable. Who would your favorite be in the NBA this season? Player team, team. I mean, the bulls obviously. Oh, I mean, my favorite. I mean, my favorite to win. The bull. Yeah, still the bulls, but no. How about the spurs? They're probably going to win it. Yeah, but like Philly's up there. Philly, okay. See spurs. New York. Probably the big four. You're the meeting with Wembee a couple of years ago. Just hilarious. Visually. But can you like, can you ever see yourself like embracing being a heel in the NHL? Like I feel like Wembee has like taken a turn and kind of embraced the heel roll. Maybe the finals just helped that. But like, so a lot of like the public opinion kind of shifted on Wembee based on the finals. Yeah, I think that's like almost sicker than like being the most beloved guy, you know, but you got to win, you know, to be hated. So maybe if we win this year, we're in the playoffs and people don't like us. So that's final. Would you think a deer in Fox in the finals? He was so good. Yeah, I'm like, I'm not good. Yeah, I'm like, if you're like breaking shit down. Yeah, no, I mean, I'm not gonna say too much negative. I guess the spurs disappointed me. We've talked a lot about the nicks and how electric that was, but like, I'm sure being here for the bears like last year was also insane because I had some of the same feelings watching the bears on their run where it was like, it was all coming together and you see how good of a sports city this is. For sure. Yeah, it's just like the comeback. And it's just like sometimes it just feels like magic, you know, a little bit. So I think obviously this year, hopefully they can, you know, duplicate that and go on around. But, you know, they're young too. So Caleb's in his what 30 years. So it's going to be fun for us down, especially as we all get better. Did you see that Cooper flag had a or a Cooper flag card sold today for eight million dollars? I didn't. I saw Max go for like, what was that a mill? I think it was a million. Which one? Michael solverini. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think it was like 800,000 or something. Maybe a million. Oh, damn. Like one and a half. Yeah, like Cooper flag. I think it's he's in top five most valuable cards of all time now. When he's got to have one up there. I would think. Do you know anything about cards? No, when I was pretty young, I collected them a lot, but I don't know much. Any other things like anything in the Annie or dance moms universe or whatever in that. Annie. So Annie was the movies that yeah, I made an Annie reference. Okay. And you understood it. And what was he? Didn't you said that when you came to like the practice facility and you were hanging around the team for the first time, you were surprised by how they had something in somebody for everything. There was always someone who could help you with this and get you that. Right. And I compared it to the, I think I'm going to like it here seen from Annie. And you were like, yeah. Yeah. And Kortzinski was like, I don't know what that is. And you were like, how do you not know what that was? And then you were grilling him over it. I might forget it now, honestly. I've watched the movies. Dance moms too. And obviously seen. I got the odd, like, real on Instagram with like, I always get the one where she like goes to the cops after someone like tells her to put her phone away, you know, my favorite one. But, uh, no, I, I, I have this, my sister watched that stuff. So, I'm not going to lie and say I didn't listen to it a little bit. I mean, you watched Love Island. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, my wife is a huge bravo head. So like, I've been pulled into it. I'm massive in on traders. We're, yeah. It's like a show or something to do highly recommend. Oh, is it another, like dating show tip? No, it's like, uh, it's like a game show, um, sort of like competition show. It's, um, there's a castle full of people. They go to Scotland. And there's a UK version. There's a US version. And there is a, it's a castle full of like 22 people. And three people are traders. And their role is to murder the other people and the other people are faithfuls. And they all just hang out together and do shit together. And at the end of every night, the traders meet up and murder someone, which is. And they're like out of the house. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. And they're trying to figure out who it is. Yeah. Yeah. That's what it is. It's like among us meets like real world, - It's a real real challenge. - It's a. it's very. fun. It's fucking awesome. I highly recommend it. I'll have a slightly longer cut of that interview on YouTube as well. But thank you to Connor Bedard for coming back on. Thank you to Ben and Kayla for making it happen from the Blackhawks. They've been awesome with us. And oh my god, where those forums getting bigger over the course of the interview. Yeah, did you? Did you edit that video? Was that AI? No, every time it cut to us, he was, or actually, no, every time it cut to us, our forums were small. So every time it went back to him, they looked bigger. Ah, it's the hot tub effect. Yeah. Well, what do you do for forums, Sean? What were you just doing? Yeah, what were you? I missed it. What did you do? You did like that. I was like, I was like, I was like, I was like, that's fun dance. So forums, you get a, you get the like those the squeeze, the squeeze. I do that while watching hockey sometimes. Really? You also do like, you just like, oh, like this. Yeah, or I'm curls. You know what I stay doing? What? I am fucking addicted to dead hangs. That's my favorite thing. And though, I want to go to the gym, the laziest of all gym. I want to go to the gym. Just do just a hang just do dead hangs. And then maybe a little sauna hit the shower. My grip strength is right in my grip strength is off the charts right now. Very cool. It's good. I've always had horrible posture. They say it helps. What grip? But dead hangs? No, there wasn't any like double on a tonder there. I was just saying they say the dead hangs help. So it's your lengthens your spine. Yeah. Yeah. There you go. So if I don't know, you start doing dead hangs. All right. Thank you to Connor Bedard. Love him, love him, love him. You had a question that you asked me before the show. Just do it. I'm gonna ask Sean. Yeah. Sean, I don't know if you have taken a look at the Vesna odds this season. Oh, I have not. Who would you guess is leading the Vesna odds? Oh, I yeah, I really have no idea, like a Jake Oltinger. Nope. I have no. I'll give it to you. What? Leading the Vesna odds because the more interesting one is who is second leading the Vesna odds. Oh, turn off the chat, Sean. I don't want to see that the answer is if you could. Well, he's about to tell us, isn't he? Well, no, no, no. The real interesting one is the second place. First place, Vesna odds, Connor Hellerbuck, not going to play the season, perhaps. So Connor Hellerbuck has the best Vesna odds at, I believe, plus 500 at 550 plus 550. Second place. And here's an another interesting wrinkle. There's Connor Hellerbuck at plus 500. Second place, goal tender plus 550. And then the third place goal tender is plus 950. So there's a significant jump between second and third. Nine. Exactly. I gave DJ 10 guesses to guess who the second place Vesna. Second favorite for Vesna is not even close. I think I mean, during the show because I was like, let's do that on the show. I'm not going to look and because it's just either escaping me or, but it's also somebody that surprises you, right? Yeah. It would be that high. Okay. Okay. No, I mean, I'm just trying to, I'm just trying to think of like guys that are going to be like starters. I get like that are not going to be like 1a1b. So go naturally. Go go. I'm writing your internal data. Give me who you would think would be a Vesna favorite this year. Oh, I mean, like, I think there's like obvious, like I think it's, you know, Shostirkin, Serokin, Baselowski. No. So yeah, but I'm you asking the question, maybe think it's not a single one of those guys. Yeah. I initially thought that if hella buck is one, then by that logic, it's going to be Shostirkin too. And he said, no. And I named all the people that you just said, Pete, I've written down because the name did come to me during the show where I was like, oh, it's that person. I've written it down. I'll show it to you after maybe Sean gets it. But who else, like, who else? Is it Logan Thompson? It sure is. That's why I fucking wrote Logan Thompson has the second best Vesna odds. And I know he had a great season last year. I was going to say didn't he finish in the top, like high on the voting program? Yeah, but like, but like de facto, uh, Vesna favorite this year, like by a significant margin. With you take out a book that is really surprising. I think he led the league in say percentage last year. No, he did not always close. Who did? I know that I wedged what did, which we'll learn on the slate later. Oh, amazing. But, um, no, but I mean, I like, I think you think about it. It's like the other like all the goals that I just named, like the other big time goalies, like, I don't think the rangers are going to be good. I don't think the islanders are going to be particularly awesome. So we sure that the capitals are going to be good. Like I really like the roster, but are we sure they're going to be awesome. But I mean, we know Logan Thompson has been awesome. And that team is significantly better. I would say on paper, at least offensively than they were last year. And defensively people forget. I was just very surprised that it shook out that way. Number one, with hella buck, who so much uncertainty on if he's going to play who he's going to play for. And then Logan Thompson being significantly detached from the rest of the pack. Logan Thompson was tied with Andre Vasilevsky for third in say percentage last year when Wedgewood 921 wallsted 916 Vasilevsky Thompson and not as enough finalist Igor Shostirkin also 912, three goalies with 912 UPL. We are reminding us that we don't acknowledge safe percentage. Oh, yeah, a gold tender efficiency rating. Sorry. The GER. Sorry, we use our internal data. My bad. Yeah. Okay, we're going to tonight's opening night. So normally we do the slate grade like right at the end of the show. And I suppose this is a later segment that we're doing on today's show. But Sean, give us the slate. We'll look at it. And we'll talk about the games for a little bit more than we normally do and look at that new slate format per the great Sean deposit. That looks real good. It's got the games on the right. Are you going to be doing like league leaders all the time? Whatever the vibe is. It could be space. It could be anything. I was at one point going to do like, you know, cup odds, which is probably a good thing. I didn't because then I probably want to see the Vesna odds, you know, point like goal race, whatever whatever the vibe is, then I could be a bit related thing. Who knows? Okay. At 5 p.m. Eastern the United States and Canada, the Florida Panthers will visit the Carolina Hurricanes as the Canes raise their championship banner at Lenovo Center. That will kick off the NHL season. You can catch it on ESPN. Then 7 p.m. Eastern the United States and Canada. It's a good old original six robbery game. Montreal, Canadians visit the Toronto Maple Leafs at 8 p.m. More original six Rangers at Bruins. I would say that's the less exciting of the two original six games that we will be getting tonight, but still an exciting one 8 p.m. On ESPN at 10 p.m. Out West. The Vancouver Canucks will visit the Edmonton oilers who are the heaviest favorite of any favorite in these games. And I don't know if the oilers are necessarily going to win that game. And then tucking us in 10 30 p.m. Eastern the United States and Canada on ESPN Chicago Blackhawks minus Connor Bedard will visit the Vegas Golden Knights. This this slate is going to be an A because hockey is back. But don't get too comfortable. We give these we give them an A or an A minus. You're usually hearing more A minuses for the slates than A's. But boy, these are all good guys games. I'm very excited about anyway. Yeah. I mean, I think this is a great structure. Love the 5 p.m. game. I probably would have maybe swapped Bruins Rangers with that with Florida Carolina. Florida Carolina opening up the season at 5 p.m. in a Stanley Cup ceremony seems odd to me. But here we are. I love the structure. Love the games. Love hockey. We're back. And that's all that matters. Big time A. Yeah. Panthers debut in Brady Kachuk. Looks like Brady Kachuk. By the way, this was from yesterday in practice. Brady Kachuk was on the barcov line. Matthew Kachuk was with Bennett. So Kachuk separated. We don't know if that's going to be there. Chanko tonight. I think they said that it's up to immigration. So thanks Biden. You know, Drake, Drake likes to rap a lot about Drake likes to rap a lot about. He's got a lot of pull with, you know, like immigration and Canadian forces and stuff like that. If he's a real, if he's a real fan, make some calls to get Carl Marchenko in this game. Well, famously Kendrick did say he's a real fan. True. I forgot that the Panthers have garnered half the way, by the way, work found in kitchen. Yeah. That's very, that's very, he wasn't already on that team. Panthers down, Brad Marchon to begin the season. But man, I'm looking at that lineup and I am saying, oh my God. Yes, Sean. You think the, the Kachuk's are going to be like the Oilers, like Brady Kachuk is the Oilers Leandra Isadel in the sense that, you know, when Shake It's Bad, gotta go a vendrous line and put the Kachuk's together. Well, I mean, at least in an international competition,
which is the only place we've seen those guys play together. - What? - John Gritty said, "Ice is the biggest enemy of the leaves." Many such cases, fair, big time, fair. - Yes, every time they did that, it worked in international competition, just like have the, I mean, they called it the January 6 line, but like have the conchucks and Jack Eichel play together and that shit's gonna rock. - Who would be the third member of the January 6 line, Florida Panthers edition? - I think the people would say Sam Bennett, even though Sam Bennett is Canadian, but he just kind of looks the part, not his profile. - We don't profile this show. - Is there another American in, - Oh, you know who someone might say? - In the lineup, just because he's like, - Such an ass kicker? - No, Radco Goudus. - Oh yeah, famously also American. - Yeah, and a forward. - Yes, they don't have any other Americans. - The conchucks, the only Americans. - Oh, that'd be crazy. - Is Garne Jones. - Oh, no, no, no. - Is that Jones? - Oh, Garne Hathaway. - Is Garne Hathaway from New Hampshire? - Really? - Yeah, I believe so. Cause when the Bruins traded for him, it was a big, big story line. - Classic, it being a big story line with the Bruins get Garne Hathaway. Shout out Garne Hathaway. - But I will say, sleeper, sleeper, one of the blackest teams in hockey. They're at like 1.5 right now. Cause that Boko Amamas in the lineup. - Ooh, or at least he might be. Shout out to Boko Amamas. - Edmonton Oilers tonight. I believe first time in NHL history, starting with Maine with three Canadian Jewish players. Zach Hyman, Jake Walman, and Devon Levi. Little history being made there. Speaking of people in the Edmonton Oilers lineup. - Wait, Devon Levi's on the starting line. - Emma. - Well, I guess like on the roster, I should say. Tristan Jari, I was gonna say unfortunately, but that's my goalie. Tristan Jari is starting tonight. You have the lines from yesterday for the Oilers, right, Sean? - I do. - Okay, because these, this is already dated because Ryan Newgen Hopkins is injured and not playing. But Pod Colson, Mick David, dry side all. Then who knows what's happening beyond that? Because Ryan Newgen Hopkins is out. I just wanted to look at the bottom six, which is Howard, Michael's, Frederick, Formenton, Doc, Joseph. And I look at that and I ask, are you, is I Howard allowed to request the demotion to Bakersfield? Can he ask to be sent down? I mean, I think that might be his best course of action no matter what. - So like, protect yourself because you're gonna get, there's gonna be bad tape and people are gonna be like, oh, he can't hang in the NHL. Although, shout out that line, that's a real guys line. - Well, I was gonna say, there's a Howard. There's a Michael. - Yeah, I was gonna say, oops, all first names line. - Yeah, yeah, that's a real guys line. - Yeah. - Everybody there seems to be a guy. - I mean, the Oilers have two first lines. They have a first line and they have a first name line. - First name line. - I kinda want that, that could be the who want me line of this year. If that somehow works, that shit would rock. But Ryan Newgenopkins is out. So that sucks. - Like Howard's gotta do the reverse Jordan Binnington. Call up his GM and be like, I'm not ready for this. - You're gonna be ready to be here. - Yes. - If you keep me on the NHL roster, you will regret it. - You regret it. - Don't, this is going to affect the rest of your career. What are you gonna do, Stan? - That's still the craziest thing that I've heard. Probably in the history of the show, is that Jordan Binnington just called his general manager and was like, I will fucking kill you. - A system general manager. - A system general manager is like, I will fucking kill you if you don't call me up. And it worked that I was like, hell yeah, this is what I want. - That's just, yeah, this is the good shit. - The proof that I need you. - If anybody doesn't know what we're talking about, we interviewed Bill Armstrong, general manager of the Utah Mammoth when he was in St. Louis. He said that Jordan Binnington called him when Jordan Binnington was in the NHL, was like, call me now or you will forever regret it. - It's like, I'm ready. Time for me to end up. - Who was right there? - Who was right, actually was right. - He unfortunately wouldn't help. - One, the Stanley Cup, crazy stuff. I wish Bedarber planned tonight. I'd be really in on that tuck. I don't know how in on the tuck I am. - It is a white night versus golden night. - Ah, true. - Very fair. - Bo Byram debut for the Black Hawks? - Yep. - Three goals. - Incoming. - Incoming. I had a dream Bo Byram had 15 points last night. Hat trick. I don't know, hat trick and four more hat tricks. - Right on. - Fuck yeah. All right, shall we do some super chats? - Let's do it. - Today in super chats, we've got Steph, says good luck to everyone in the three what not fantasy hockey leagues, XOXO, you. - Three what's three, what not's what? - Three what's three nuts, league, commission, right on. - What do you mean by that? - Shout out, good luck everybody. Have fun out there. Karen McGraw, DJ, your jacket looks so good. It's almost making me forget your unforgivable babs take for me yesterday. - Yeah, he got me. I'll give a new babs take. - Uh oh. - I stay watching Babcock press conference. - Don't think anybody was asking for the sequel to that take. - He always, I like him even more. And I hope I'm not making light of any sort of like skin condition or like his age or anything. He always looks so cold. Like when he's given a press conference when he gets off the ice, he's got that runny nose and red face. - Somebody might say that he is cold blooded, maybe. - Well then shouldn't he, so then you'd be warm. - They're gentlemen. - What? - Right? - If you're cold blooded, you're cold. - If he was cold blooded and he was in the cold, he would be comfortable. - Well, he'd be comfortable, but he would look like he was cold. - I think that you would probably look normal. I don't know if either of us know the answer to this, but. - Don't cold blooded animals, 'cause I don't know the answer, but like don't cold blooded animals need extra warmth? - That's what I would assume. - Like don't, don't like lizards have heat lamps and shit? - Oh yeah, yeah, maybe. - Chunkiest castle says hey, fellas, hit 30 and became a dad in the off season. Glad to be back on the daily with y'all. What I miss, Buffalo got the cup rights, archasm. - Congratulations. - Congratulations on becoming a dad and hitting 30. - Pressing consequence. - Congrats. Did you see that not that we respect that particular video game, but NHL27 ran a simulation of the season and did you see what the Stanley Cup was? - Was it Buffalo? - It was the Edmonton Oilers over the Buffalo Savers. - Man, that would feed families. - And it would just be. - You'd need a set of producing. - You'd need a set of producing and watching while you guys have this fight. - You know what sucks though? I'm not, I'm not made of what Sean is made of. I can be an idiot and I can unfortunately be an asshole sometimes, but I would not be nearly prepared to like try to make Sean as unhappy as he'd be trying to make me. - Well, the problem is, you would fuck your team ball and I would do what you always do. You'd be like, you put your armor on my fucking shoulder and be like, ah, they tried their hardest and that would be worse than anything I could do. - Yeah, I do that. I'm sorry, I do that. - That's worse. - It is worse. - It is worse for sure worse. - As I've famously told you, don't do that shit. - It comes from a place of me trying to make myself look like a good guy though. It makes it so much better. Bond your high to my husband who's also listening at work. Can't wait to watch the bees with you tonight. Oh, that's the most wholesome super chat we've ever fucking gotten. Shout out Katherine. Shout out Katherine's husband. So I'm making sure the saxophone is back. - Thank you very much. - 'Cause I'm getting tweets about that and I'm like-- - Yeah, the people, I don't even know what to say. - The people will listen to you. Stutzlo is not named Captain of the Ottawa Senators. - Who was it? - Chabot. - Okay. - Oh yeah, fine. I don't know much about Thomas Chabot as a leader. Why the fuck would I? - But it's not Stutzlo. - We're about to find out. Superman says first the Leafs takes the Bruins first rounder. Now Marchenko Pete should crash out. Yeah, I mean, it's, it's tough. I'll be honest. I'm taking L's here. Alex Adams, MLB postseason starts today. Let's go braves right on. Let's go socks. Emma Haven, just saying hi and bye, but have you seen Tito Cooley of the Flames? Is that, is that Devon Cooley's dog, Kat? Seems like a cat guy.
He does. Actually, he seems like, like, he seems like a bird guy. He seems like a chicken's guy. He probably knows the answer to the cold blooded thing. Yeah. He could be a reptile. He definitely would know the answer. And if he didn't know the answer, that would be the next four weeks of his life. He'd find out everything about it. Tito Cooley is, oh, it's a bunny. Oh, yeah. I've been for the return of hockey since I cannot in good conscience support my team of stupid oilers. Okay. Plenty of room on the saber's bandwagon. Yeah, I'm, I'm very sad that you can't support the oilers and I definitely don't blame you. I kind of want Sean to give his speech because I don't want to lose you on the team. Oh, yeah. I mean, absolutely. This is a slightly different situation. I guess it's a little harder to do the whole joyous, defiance thing, but I don't generally talk about it in the context of like that. The mug of hockey players. I'm not, I'm not letting them take this shit from me. Like, I'm still going to, I'm still going to enjoy it. But yeah, you know, I understand why people might have a harder time doing it in this context. You are better than a leadership group or an owner or a general manager who is not of, I would say our ideal moral standard and that's to put it lightly. Each week's do not equal endorsements. Yeah. So you, so I feel very, but but I also, but you're, you're, you're your person and you know how you, you feel, but it sucks if that's taken from you and it shouldn't be taken from you. We never talked about the fact that they signed Logan Stanley, personally, my favorite defense within NHL history. And then immediately sold 15, 15% of the franchise for $3 billion. How the fuck does that happen? The answer is obviously Logan Stanley. Uh, but that, that's, I don't know how he was doing that one. That's called a pump and dump Sean. Yeah. It's a 15%. Yeah, you get $13 billion Oh, you said $3 billion, $3 billion. Oh, with a B. Yes. I was, like, let's start taking some like calcium stuff and then like actually buy an NHL team. Yeah. We're not taking calcium stuff. Uh, luxury trash. Yeah. We just did that one qualitative vacuum says and we're back. Hockey. Happy hockey.
