The Magic Sponge podcast covers NRL round updates, focusing on the Broncos' vital win over the Panthers, which keeps their finals dream alive after an eight-game winning streak. The Dolphins also won, solidifying fifth place, and hosts Brian and James celebrate New South Wales club footy after Queensland's Origin loss. Injury analysis highlights several HIAs: Brendan Piakura's second concussion in three weeks raises concerns due to his history, AJ Brimson is out with a category one HIA, and Jack Bostock missed due to lingering symptoms. Adam Reynolds looked less than 100%, prompting debate on whether Tom Duffy should start at halfback. Sharks injuries include Jesse Ramien (illness), Siosifa Talakai (elbow, out 1-3 weeks), and Addin Fonua-Blake (minor pec strain, likely minor). The hosts also discuss cricket, noting the Ashes buildup where Andrew McDonald's coaching is under scrutiny, while England's new coach Brendon McCullum aims to bring discipline. They draw parallels between cricket's old boys and Broncos' former players, highlighting media drama. Overall, the episode blends rugby league injury updates with broader sports commentary, emphasizing club loyalty and player fitness.
Yeah, so welcome back to the Magic Sponge podcast, America cure for all your rugby league injury issues. I am Brian the guy behind all the NRL physio content you see on social media. My car host James he's here and you are on the updates. The Bronx knocked over. Yeah, the competition heavyweights and we usually say competition heavyweights in tongue in cheek about a lot of clubs. But we mean it when we talk about panoreth and eight. I like I said to you before coming on here the biggest I guess disappointment must be as a Bronx fan. You see it and you go this is what they've had in them all year injuries have been rough but look if they can if they can win eight and a row James they make the finals now eight and a row didn't work for us. We can't do it. Three. Can it work for the Bronx to get into the finals mate. And you speak all the magic again that's the million all the question right do you dare to dream do have your hopes crushed you dare to dream I don't know it's it seems improbable doesn't that but when you look at the ladder and the teams in front of them that got coming up. You know there if you tell me there's a chance I'm going to hang on to it you know I think that's the thing is a rugby league fan if there's not your mathematically eliminated then there's still a chance you're going to hang on to that for dear life. I'm going to be very interested in what happens over the next few weeks if we make the finals you're going to hear me absolutely crowing about it don't worry about that for just a second. But I will say Brian good win by the fins for you you had a good day out there watching the NRW game as well I believe so good to see that stuff up on the socials but like I said off air any game that you get without guitar lining up is absolute gold boys go into the by sitting pretty in fifth position at the moment Brian fins probably are up would we say. Mate it was it was a big day for a couple of things obviously went to the NRW and there was there was a real chance that the girls were going to get brainwashed I did put it up on the story you know buck the bronco rolling around the bronco's girls just absolutely lighting up totally work where stadium. Put on an absolute score and I'm going on and you know the girls are wearing the bronco's premier hats that I've now got floating around in my house somewhere and I'm just like what the hell like this is not good. But thankfully we came home and managed to catch the end of the fins game where they got well and truly up and our big win so the girls got around that they're back to being fins fans so I think it was temporary you know mum mum tried to sprinkle the broncos dust. Get them across but thankfully was about yeah was able to keep him keep him to the fins mate on the NRW the their story there is when along because my brother place touch he said oh look come along we're going I said there are fins family as well as like why are you going to the Bronx you know the Bronx game and he's like I play touch with one of the girls who plays for the targets and I was like okay. You know thinking must be a half you know fall back maybe a winger no he plays touch with one of the front rowers so Taylor Rinky she she plays for the Tigers front row quick feet you know played really really well today so it was good we were we were her cheer squad down in the bottom corner given her all and the girls were confused like why are we cheering for the Tigers. So it was good but it's good to see a front row up who's a touch player like I love love that kind of stuff that's good good rugby league right there made on the fins I've said once I'll say it again any minutes that the dolphins are playing with anyone but Max Plath or Kurt Donohau at number 13 is a waste of space like I like Christian Wolf has just got to give up on Morgan. I know you know you'd love to think the English forwards they bring over a garath Ellis and San Burgess and this guy just isn't it he I don't know whether he ends up being like that but at the moment like every time he's on these missing tackles he's given away penalties and these guys come on Plath and Donohau and just lay on tries tough stuff it's so good I love seeing them at 13 so things just sorted out just play at 13. Noles can come on off the benches of prop or something like that but give give the boys their due because yeah they were elite today cell one was good at center which I was a bit nervous about but yeah we needed that one because I think if we lost that we're right on the edge of the eight so gives us a little bit of breathing room going into the ball. Next week which is huge mate very very good but look let's get into it a bit of a shorter waffle today because Queensland have lost and now the Bronx and the fins one so we're we're back on top it's back on yeah we're back club footies way better new South well to use it was keep telling me that origin doesn't matter you should care about your club side more so i'm all in on that on that mantra at the moment so yeah get into it get into it actually can we say straight off the top on the waffle for. 10 more seconds you're all about it i'm not about it just in laying a coaching the palms in cricket like get out here sure we're not listen to me listen to me mate it's going to be. Absolutely box office because you just got to think about the history there like you got jail who has like the old boys in the media on his side just chastising. Atty Cummins or this man andra McDonald saying these books all shit because they because he got moved on by those senior playing group like he got asked to move basically because they didn't rate him as a coach. So there's a lot of simmering stuff there that i'm sure there's plenty of people in the media are waiting for this current strain cricket team to slip up and they're waiting to go huh they did jail dirty and look at these guys look at captain. So the panels whose more can he got these boys going nowhere and if he takes England in the ashes it is going to be so electric Brian like because all those that whole team. This will be almost a bit of a swan song for them like there'll be a lot of guys who are like let's go to England and win five nil let's get the way ashes done because they're obviously retain the earn a couple of times that haven't. One in England since the early 2000s i don't think so imagine if they could really stick it to England while they're in absolute shambles and jails at the helm as well there will be very very motivated 11 players were in bag of green. I think it's going to be so good I think the the media build up the hype the off the field staff the drama it's going to be good because if if England play well then. Everyone's going to say we should never let Jayle go because Jayle is very very very highly regarded by a lot of former cricketers a lot of former like players. But obviously not by this kind of playing group so this could be absolutely explosive it could just be really really good I think it's going to be great mate like obviously love Jayle when he was playing for Australian opening about many Hayden all time partnership safety you name it it was the best. But as as a coach is you know the only after what she know the test on was Amazon Prime is a bit going on there Brian like it's it could be one of those things that could be amazing TV but it could be pre-spicy made I love to be flying the wall of him like trying to rain Harry Brooke. And you imagine imagine him technically working over Zach Raleigh is an opener oh my god he would just be like you don't value wicked enough do you want it enough you see for it like he's so intense. It's just it's so opposite of what they've been doing as well that's the best thing about it is like McCormick is like do whatever you want we're the best like we're entertainers just entertain people don't worry about it and you know Stokes is just you know. For one you know he's just on a bender and the piss is undefeated and like he's just getting himself in trouble and you got Jayle who's just like the most strict discipline area and that's where cricket goes it goes to like. We got this disciplinary nut like that we want to go someone who's a bit more chill and then you'd like to chill and that's like no we need to discipline back and they go in these swings and cycles and England at the moment just in. Seemingly in this cycle of like no then to chill to relax we don't want it enough now they want someone in there to be the hard knows we want to get hard knows again brought is what it seems like anyway it's the match it's the magic wire of. 100% English cricket 1 million because I tell you what James we talk about the Broncos old boys being influential and and loudmouthed on this show but if there is one group of our boys who is even more intense then the Broncos old boys you see straight cricket. Yeah a lot of parallels isn't there and the thing is with the the cricketers is it's hard because they were the team like they were the best team of all time so what they say in the media. Carries a lot of weight there's a lot of guys that are really in prominent roles here as well but similar to the Broncos like they were the team in the early 90s and those guys still have a lot of gravitas across the place so. There is a lot of similarities there it's a very good pick up there but oh man there's some spicy stuff in the in the media with the former playing group who are obviously very aligned to JL and very not aligned with the current you know Pat Cummins relative group I think. I love it we've done good waffle to fill in our usual time we have yeah look let's get let's get to it we're on YouTube everywhere you get your podcasts give us a like subscribe all those things on that platform. We are you one stop shop for all things injury analysis in the NRL and we look at all back to super coach and fantasy to help you guys when you legs or maybe even the 50 grand we're still charging. Let's get into the injury wrap for this week which is brought to you by pain pod drug free pain relief anyone can use and if you use the code NRLP at the pain pod dot com yet 12% off I don't know exactly what is done I would have thought it was an ankle but I'm just guess it shouldn't be out from long period I'm not doctor we have to wait for the skins obviously but I'd be more positive than negative. Alright, we're going to go HIA's to launch in Brian.
got three on the list tonight. Brennan Peer Kura was real cat one in that Broncos game. Bit of a repeat story there for Pearl Brennan Peer Kura. There's been a few of them over his career. We've also got Ajay Brinson, listed as someone who displayed cat one signs and then also bit of an upj8 on Jack Bostock who was famously real doubt showing will deem to be category one in origin three. He didn't play on the weekend. He obviously was right on the borderline of that 11-day period but he didn't play on the weekend for the Finns. You guys didn't need him got the chocolates but yeah, what do you want to start there for the H.I. as for you? Send me interesting ones this week I think. Mate, the conspiracy with Jack Bostock may not be a conspiracy. The move from Laurie Daly but like I think the biggest thing with that is because it was 11 days pretty much on the dot for Bostock. He only needed to display symptoms like even the next morning. If he woke up dusty the next morning still not 100% his 11 days then start from whenever he symptom free so that might have not been till later that afternoon and then that already means that he misses out. So it's always real convenient reports of him not training or week came out after he was filled out and I'm like because I posted it in the broadcast channel and people are like, "Oh, why didn't you tell me earlier?" I'm like, "Mate, I don't know the journals." Who is that training all week decided to tweet about it like after he got ruled out which is one of those things otherwise we might have had more of an idea. But yeah, so I assume that's all it is at this point in time that maybe he had some lingering symptoms. I mean we spoke about I had plenty of questions about, "Oh, is it the best idea for him to have a few beers after the game?" And we spoke about that last week. That's a tough one. So yeah, look like hopefully he's all good from a Finns point of view and just a general point of view and he is back next week. Ajay Brimson category one so he will miss next week. The big one with complicating history or complex history is Brendan Piqueura. So he that's his second one in three weeks effectively. So he had one before the buy and now he's got another one. So category one, I swear he had one earlier in the season as well but I couldn't find anywhere where I documented it or anybody else documented it. So maybe it's just my feeling left over from last year because he had some issues with concussions last year as well and extended recoveries. So yeah, I mean he's one who's not going to be challenging the 11 day stand down because of his history and then just an increased risk of this taking longer because of the history that's there. We've seen a guy like Lindsay Collins take several weeks now. So yeah, so it just it doesn't mean that that's going to be the case of Piqueura. It just means it's more of a risk. It's higher likelihood. So yeah, and I mean the edge is probably the one place at the moment that Bronx are in a bit of trouble mate. So they need him back fit and firing as soon as possible. Yeah, been on the issue for a long period of time that spot didn't cost us last year but it feels like it's cost us a little bit at times this year. We're to the Panthers first the Broncos and this one I will say Brian obviously great win by the Bronx but holy geez, I've never seen the ball bounce more for the Broncos in my life. Like there was so many 50 50s. I think we got about 10 or 12 genuinely and I would say like a lot of stuff could have gone the Panthers way. They were still very, very good. We got Adam Brown's on list here with a leg concern and then obviously Dylan Edwards with that pretty nasty head laceration there just got to Strayal bow making a tackle from there was Liam Martin wasn't in that incident there. So pretty, pretty nice little picture you had of Dylan Edwards stitched up noggin after the game Brian wasn't it? Yeah mate. No C1 10 stitches apparently these kids wanted to watch him get stitched up which is how how harder he's kids. I know. Right. They breed him in panoreth man. That's that's such a good story like oh yeah kids just wanted it. My kids would be on the other side of the house mate like they would not be anywhere near it but mate the big thing with Dylan Edwards the one thing or maybe there's two but the one main thing that head gear is really good at helping both preventing in the first place but then also protecting after you get a head cut so a plus head gear that's why I say head gear is good. It is very, very good for this specific purpose and not for concussion keep that in mind but people asking why you can go off for HIA my usual response of while we've got a subjective test it would be that in independent doctor's view and the club doctor's view and the person on the field's view that he didn't show any signs of concussion that's all I got for you there's no more analysis to it other than that unfortunately and then Adam Reynolds mate he just did not look 100% this entire game I mean we could probably do a whole podcast you mainly whaffling about like what the Broncos need to do from here without him Reynolds but I think like outside of the game plan he just didn't look great he like he hasn't looked great for what feels like most of the season you know with hamstring calf you know all these niggling things and then yeah he just I thought he was going to leave the field multiple times in this game before we get to Adam Reynolds I will give a shout out mate Pat Carrigan 80 minutes off that tightrope surgery seven weeks post played in man's he was awesome you know I'll like alarm bells for Billy Slater not playing him in origin three yeah totally agree yeah like you know especially when paddies out there pumping out 80 minutes not eat like like eight days after you know you couldn't bring patty carrigan on for 20 minutes not that I'm dirty about it or anything James not holding onto it at all forgotten about it ages ago and then Dean Maranimate the other one like off the compartment syndrome surgery he's back and look like he's not lighting the world on fire but he's playing really really well and I had people who you know when I first said you know potentially could be back within two months because of the studies that we'd we'd found over in the NFL people going no you know season over that kind of thing like he's he's back doing really really well playing well so yeah shout out to those two guys being immense but mate where do you go with Reynolds I don't know I just I'm a big tom duffy guy as I think we've spoken about many times I'd just be all about tom duffy been in there I think he's fantastic I yeah I'd almost rather him over Jonah peasant if I'm honest but yeah what are your thoughts on Reynolds. Any question for me because I'm in very much to tom duffy camp if you ask any other bronchose fans or other people in the media there's a lot of chat about Billy Bolt who's playing seven there's heaps of it Brian there's a lot of chats and and I don't know about playing seven anyway that's the yarn that's getting spun I still think tom duffy is way too good to be playing cup in my opinion he's got all the skills and attributes you want onto seven and you saw the other night there was multiple instances where Reynolds gets the ball spun his way from hook up and Reese's Tony's hands in the air being like what the hell where's the ball he obviously wants the ball in his hands more often than he's getting it that's going to become an issue and I think that's what you saw it then last year when the bronchose got real hot it was just get Reese the ball more than ever and just give it when he when he wants it at all times and then almost he has to say no I don't want it now like that's where you got to go you just got to give it to him and give it to him he's playing a lot of first receiving the other night he was really switched on right wasn't he Brian I know in the first 10 minutes I said to you I was like okay Reese is on a bit of a heater here because we'll talk about super coach corner in a bit but I did full it with our idea and I should have backed my gap but we'll get to that in a little bit time we'll go to shark's first nights next on the list Brian Jesse Raymond was a late real out with illness in the week and then we've got Cibid talikaya with the elbow concerned and AFB with a head concern haven't heard us a very for their AFB but he's dirt cheap at front right now and super coach isn't he Brian but not really relevant no yeah it's been we finally got the AFB hate right James after four years of calling him a fade and in frosts and fades at the start of the year and him absolutely lighting us up each and every year this is finally the one but he went up the up the tunnel with what they saying is a minor peck strain it was funny Crafis given said in the post match oh you don't want to make a minor one a major one but he was okay so we sent him back out there anyway so like I assume it's nothing too major he also said if he misses any time will only be you know not very much at all so I mean look at happy chorus out who returned from a four week pecking tree in one week so like if it is a true minor peck strain you know one to two weeks would be max but potentially he plays through it the sharks have got to hold on to that top four spot are pretty hard so Cibid talikaya he's out one I think one to three weeks with that elbow concerned and then Jesse Raymond had an illness a lot of people saying and I totally agree mate I think illness is the new infection for this year we've had quite a few illnesses I don't know how well links Africa you know works on certain illnesses but I'm sure it can't hurt to try James like get get some links Africa you know if you get the spray get the roll on you get the the shower gel maybe a combination of all three can can solve even the worst ailments well the worst comes a worst brine if you're rotting in bed with illness you're going to smell good doing it that's what we will say about links Africa so I might not expediate the recovery time but you'll smell good while you're just rotting away into your mattress while you're nursing a big old fever or you're nursing some illness Rises rest storm was next on the list brine we've got Jerome Hughes he was we're at pregame with hamstring soreness kemusta was ruled out basically in the lead up to this game as well following meniscus surgery will wall brick was an Achilles injury bad news therefore will wall brick obviously saw him with the medicare get and taken off the field there before we go to the wires
next year, then DCE was a nose injury here, Brian. So if you big issues for the storm again, mate, they're going to be really touching going to get into the eight as it heats up because they're just hanging into 11th spot. They're on eight wins, 10 losses. It's kind of looking like an outside chance at best for the eight for the storm, isn't it? Yeah, mate. I think they're in a bit of trouble. We'll start with DCE just to get that one out of the way. Look, looks like in May of broken his nose, but as with Teddy, I think not too long ago, even if it's broken, it shouldn't cost him too much time. I found this one post on this. I found quite funny. DCE played the last tale of many minutes after he dies knows with a tail hanging out the back of his shorts. The cleaner blood off. I'm like, that is first time I've ever seen that and that is epic stuff like you love to see that kind of thing. But yeah, the little, you know, more commonly seen on cricket fields, which were a bit of a cricket podcast earlier here. Jerome Hughes hamstring soreness is what they're calling it. I mean, look, the storm can have interesting descriptions about different injuries at time. So whether it's soreness, whether it's a minor strain, we're not quite sure. I think the biggest thing here is, you know, even back at the start of the injury there was Jerome Hughes who said, yeah, it's minor. I'm not going to miss a game. And then Craig Bellamy said, no, we expect him to miss multiple games. There's just a lot of to and fro here. So I mean, hopefully he's back next week, but the biggest concern there would just be risk of re-injury, right? This is the second, you know, even if you just want to call it symptom aggravation. It's like the second hamstring issue that's caused him to miss time in the last month. So yeah, that definitely gives me some concern. Best case scenario, he's back next week, but even if he's back next week, it's probably with an elevated risk of re-injury. Ken Munster, he had Miniscus surgery. He just had the trim, which is where they go in and trim out the damage portion of the Miniscus. So for, yeah, for that, you usually look at it four to six weeks, like return to play, have seen the quickest in three weeks, but it was like a one off, yeah, that usually you're looking at, like best case four week return, which would be missing three weeks and back in the fourth. It's just one of those senior shames, or I wonder if the depending on how the storm goes over the next two or three weeks, if they're out of finals, contention, even, although, like, if it gets to around 25 and the storm can't make the finals deep, bring Ken Munster back for three games the end of the season, I mean, I know Ken Munster will say yes, especially with a world cup, you know, wants to prove his fitness, that kind of thing, but yeah, I like that's just going to be an interesting one. It's really, and we'll talk about it in Super Coach corner. It's giving me mega pause on surfa longer. As good as he is, I just wonder how much attacking upside, there's going to be there for the storm over the next little bit. And then we'll war brick with their killies mate. We'll talk about this more in muscle nation recovery room in terms of some stats around how guys return, but he will obviously be out five to eight months. He's off to the whars, so the round one is in about eight months time. The good news is is that, you know, even Alex Johnson, who's a little bit older than him, he came back in eight months. So at this stage, I would expect we'll war brick to be there in round one for the whars next year. Obviously, we're such a long recovery, like a long rehab process. It is tough, though, you know, it can easily extend out. The killies is just such a tough recovery mate. People ask me all the time, what's, you know, the worst injury, you know, you wouldn't want to face. And for me, it's always ten in injuries, like, you know, and the killies ten and a patellite ten and they're really, really tough rehabs to get over the top of. So it's going to be a challenge for him to get back to his best. And there's some, there's some stats and data from worldwide sports that work against him, but hopefully, yeah, we'll talk about in mustnation recovery room, the stats in the NRL that actually, yeah, point to him, point, give him some hope for next year and whars, fan some hope for next year as well. Yeah, the way with monsters all brigh, and they've got the round 24 by, then they run into Penderist Bronco sharks on the run home to round 27. So it's a pretty bad gorgon there for Melbourne. If they're even teetering, you're running into the Penderist Panthers, you're probably going to lose that game. Then you've got the Broncos and sharks at the end. They may be all shut him now for round 26, round 27. Hard to really know. I know there's probably a sentiment that they want to play the year out for Craig Bellamy, with everything going on there. But yeah, she's, she's, she's, she's, she's, you do want to sort of handbrake your following year. I think there's a, there's a time where you just got to pull the pen and the ink and just say, all right, it hasn't been a year this year. We'll look forward to next year. So bit of all what to watch and wait there, mate, I think. Radistverse Rabinoz was next. We got Hudson Young without a kill his injury there. So control, C control V, what we said about we'll war week. Then we've also got Keon Kalamatangi here listed as a knee concern. I don't know if this is an aggravation of the PCL injury Brian, a lot of chat during the week that there was a re-entry at in that game the previous week. Then we need to update on the trail measure with the calf concern Brian. All the, all the word end of Bunnings is this is a pretty significant aggravation and it's going to cost him a lot more weeks on the sideline. We're expecting him about round 21 or 22 leading in, but then Wayne delivered the dagger and it might be even worse than that from I guess all the ports as well. Hey, it's a bad bad bad update for the trail. Yeah, mate. There was plenty of stuff floating around that letrelle suffered an aggravation and then Wayne said two to three weeks. We've seen this story before with calves and with letrelle, right? Like letrelle had a minor calf strain out of origin a couple of seasons ago that ended up costing him like 10 to 12 weeks just because it kept going and obviously disc calf injury the added element here is it's related to his back. He's got that back disc issue that's contributed to it as well. So yeah, I mean you talk about control C, control V just control C, control V with everything we've been saying about him so far. Like you just I don't know, you can't guarantee these back at any point this season because there could be another aggravation and these back could flare up. But then even when he is back who's to say that halfway through the first game, you know, it doesn't go again. You've got the complexities around the back and the calf interacting with each other and compensations and all these sorts of things. It's just yeah, it's a situation I think a lot of people listen to us for, you know, super coach fantasy kind of stuff. Like yeah, I know even you yourself are talking about, you know, do you just have a swing if you're not kind of ranked where you need to be and oh man, I just think there's got to be better swings even if he's named in like round 23 24 now. To be fair, you were talking about that before it came out that he suffered another aggravation and you know, was out for further weeks. I just think there, you know, there's way too many alarm bells at a million dollars. If he was 500 grand, if like if it was a Tommy Turbo kind of situation who will get to very, very soon, yeah, then you know, we can we can obviously go from there, but yeah, look at he's a million bucks. So you just can't you can't do it. Keon, yeah, he went down right towards the end with that knee aggravation. So the mechanism wasn't super clear, but it did seem to be the same knee that he has that PCL issue in. There were some reports, I think not last week, the week before that he might have aggravated it training as well. So this is stock standard for PCL issues. We've spoken about it with Reese Walsh last year, Fletcher Sharp earlier this year and Keon earlier this year. The good news is is that they can be in a lot of pain and it not last very long. That is very typical for PCL. So Keon was up shaking hands after the game and stuff like that. So hopefully nothing too much there, but he's just a risk of it, you know, continuing on like if if that happened in the 10th minute, he might have had to go off, you know, not come back on, which would have absolutely destroyed him. So yeah, he's not risk free by any means. He's still absolutely lightened it up from a workload perspective, but yeah, he's definitely not risk free. And then Hudson Young made with the Achilles, though I would usually talk about forwards more favorably than backs when it comes to recovery from tendon issues like this, because it's all about explosivity off the mark, but like Hudson Young is big for that, right? Like his game is very, very built on exploding off the mark that really, really that power game. So it's something he's going to have to work really, really hard at too. I know he's already come out and said he's going to document the process. You know, he's got his supplement brand and that kind of thing, which would be good, you know, good thing to follow along from that perspective as well. So yeah, like I'm pretty confident he'll be there around, around one next year as well, provided there's no setbacks. But once again, it's that return to performance that might take a little bit of time. I've got some other stats that point towards it being, you know, optimistic in NRL guys. So yeah, hopefully he is one of those and he goes okay, but yeah, has the delay in La Trelle the further two to three weeks? Is that put you off completely, you think? I think yes, and I think for my draft lens, Brian, you can sort of cut it two ways here. Like I think if you're in a pretty dialed-in league, I would be moving La Trelle on if it was me because I don't think you're going to see him back before around, you know, 25-26 when the bigger game is going to be. If you're a real dog, you might want to send a few trade options out and see what you can get for La Trelle.
If you want to be that sort of guy and you want to be hated on by everyone in your league, if you want to really do that, I'll, you know, each their own. I'm not going to push back against it, but you probably not going to see him back this year. I would think from a super coach season perspective. So you might be able to recruit some value there if you really want to be a bit of a bad bloke about it. But, you know, you don't have to do that. But if you want to do that to get it over some of your legmates and then fair play, you can blame it on me and Brian. We'll move through the Warriors Dragon's game, Brian, because there's no injuries that we need to update out of that one. So go straight to the Bulldogs first, the West Tigers. Mitch Woods is on the list tonight with that hamstring update. We talked about him at the link last week on the pod. Obviously, we just want to sort of touch base on the news there that he's been missing for the rest of the year. Stephen Crighton couldn't get up for this game with that net concern. So we probably skip a little bit of an update on Stephen Crighton. James Salmon had a finger injury at it this morning. Leo Thompson with a leg concern and Billy Kikail, that sort of stretch groin injury mechanism there that doesn't look too serious, Brian. Doesn't we've sort of got to be careful on groins. They look bad. They probably sort of look worse than they often are in the air comes out though. Yeah, yeah, definitely. I've given up trying to guess the grading of groin's groin strains by how in pain the player is. So yeah, he obviously looked in a lot of pain at the time, but was fine and then postmatch, you know, made a joke about it. So your shem is all good. Leo Thompson got hit by that low tackle from. And it was a fine. No, yeah, it was one of the. Can come Tom or something like it. Was it? I think the who's the who's the Tigers half? Oh, no, that's not a lot of fun. Sorry. Yeah, yeah. So he did. Yeah, I don't think he came back on. So, you know, potentially whether there's an MCL issue or something there, it didn't look like a much. So hopefully he's okay. Stephen Crighton, mate, he initially it was reported that the scans were clear, but then I think Kim Seraldo came out and said that it wasn't too bad. So you assume there's something going on there. There has to be something going on there for, you know, whether it be a disc bulge or, you know, a facet join irritation or something like that that's causing such a low threshold to set off that pain for Crighton. But he couldn't prove his fitness to this week. It's not sounding like something that's going to keep him out for several weeks. But once again, once he comes back increased risk of aggravation, mid-wards is not going to likely to miss the rest of the season. This is not a surprise. By all accounts, his hamstring injury was up high on the hamstring, which as we know, it takes longer to recover from. And I think Kim Seraldo said it was a pretty nasty tear as well. So going to take a little bit of time. So yeah, look, like as we said last week, I had a few questions again this week. I'm still not, I'm not as down on Mitch Woods as I am on Tom Turbo. For example, like Mitch is very early in his career. He's got a lot of time to kind of make up for that. So I think moving forward dogs fans shouldn't be too bad or think about it too bad. Mate Jame and Sam and he had posted a photo of his finger all stitched up. I don't know whether it was a wound or what had happened there. But a wonderful question. I'll jump ahead to the questions because I didn't include this, but I had to include it here from a good friend of the show, Maxie Bride. And he said is Jame and Sam and ever going to be able to overcome the generational aura loss after getting floored by Alex Twil and like good, good. Also another good friend of the show Alex 12 mate wasn't twiley fired up. Yeah. And look, Sam and mate, I'm sorry. And I look credit to him because he gets his team penalty, gets his, like you know, gets his ten minutes, but mate, he took an absolute dive. That would be watching the fever. Yeah. I was like, I'm in fear because he got his team penalty and play on, but also you, you're going to cough and absolute ribbing for that from the rest of the comp I reckon because that was a dive of all dives. Yeah, but I'm about that sort of stuff. I'm just here for the shoot here. Sorry, Brian. I've always said that. I'll always maintain that. So if someone takes the dive like that, I'm going to clap him and stand there and be like hell yeah, that was good getting even twiley in the bin. That was pretty funny. We'll go to the Titans, but it's mainly next Brian. So big name again. Try me to avoid bitch with a hamstring injury. We'll talk about him in a bit more length, I suppose in this sort of part of the show. And we'll also mention Curtis Maureen with a leg concern and police house with an ankle concern. But the big one here's Tommy Turbo, Brian, isn't it? Yeah, mate. Just quickly, Cleese has looked like lateral ankle sprain. Nothing too crazy there. Hopefully. And then Curtis Maureen had a minor leg issue, which ruled him out pregame. But yeah, the big ticket item is Tommy Turbo, right? So this was, I think they said on the telecast. Oh, thankfully, it's like he's other hamstring, you know? And I'm like, yeah, that doesn't really matter at this point. It's like at this point, it does not matter which hamstring it is. Like, yeah, you're really clutching it straws if you're like, oh, yeah, it's not the same one as before. Because there's like, there's just so much obviously scar tissue in both at this point that the, yeah, it really we're splitting hairs. So the question is going to be where to now. Once again, control C, control B of like every chat we've had on him. I think that most of the questions I've had so far have been around like, when does it become too much? Like, is there a point where it's not, you know, and for me, I just, I've said it once I'll say it again, there hasn't been a guy ever who has been forced into retirement that I know of from like these recurring probably Jared Mullin is the closest from recurring hamstring issues. But I mean, Jared Mullin, a whole lot of a killer fish that we won't get into on this show. But like Tommy Turbo is definitely right up there in terms of someone dealing with hamstring injuries. This is ninth one. As I've pointed out in the past, Karen foreign has had, you know, into the teens of hamstring injuries. So it's not like he's the person who's had the most by by any means in the time that I've tracked injuries. He's just such a, you know, star player, he's a big, you know, super coach fantasy and he's so pivotal to, to manly that everyone is on him hard and I understand it. I like my biggest thing is there's always, there's always something to either try again or to, you know, try something different. And even something as simple James as time, right? And the, the seagulls have probably already done this to a degree. I assume it's like, okay, we think we're going to get him right in six weeks. Let's give him eight weeks. But I think with this one, it's like, do you just give him the rest of the season and go, yeah, well, like even even if he's fit in, and I say this knowing that they probably won't right, because if, if Selmy Turbo's ticking all the boxes in two, three weeks and manly are on the precipice, you know, they're in ninth and they've got a win. You're going to try to mount their right. They're like, this is, this is where, you know, sheep stations are on the line. So they do it. But yeah, time is a big one, you know, like a lot of the times he's suffering these hamstring injuries and really trying to get back as soon as humanly possible. You know, do you just give this one some extra time to try and help out? But it's like I still think it's very, very, very unlikely as much as everybody, you know, is imploring him in my comment section to retire. I just don't, especially if it's a minor hamstring strain, I would be shocked if that, you know, resulted in Tommy Turbo reassessing his future. It's just something where, as I said, you go back to the drawing board, you do things that you've done before, you do them even harder. You do it, you know, you get his hamstring strength even more. You do more high speed sprinting loads. You build it up that way because yeah, he's, he's too good not to like to give up on, I think, at this point in time. And he, yeah, it was just devastating for him. But I think at the moment, you pretty much take, if it's a minor strain, two to four weeks, you add on a few weeks to that for Turbo. So I just think even if it's a minor strain, he's going to be a long-lots to come back this year anyway. But I know James Super Coach Garner, we can talk about it, but yeah, I'm sure Super Coach and Fantasy owners out there are King their wounds. I'm, I'm, I'm not as down as a lot of people because I just think he's always worth it. I just think, like even having gone through what we've gone through, mate, it was for, I think the biggest thing that made him not a good bite this time round was Fosball Dine in the ass because yeah, they just have not been good in the last few weeks. Who saw that coming? You know, they had a soft run and, and they, the Seagulls just did not do well. He was on 50 points after 20 minutes today. That's the kind of, yeah, that's the kind upside that you got. So that's why he's always worth it if he's 500K. If he was a million dollars, he's not worth it. But you can't, you know, buy points back, right? But you can just trade him out. So I know a trade's worth a lot. But if he goes on around in the last three to four weeks, you can't get those points back. It was just, yeah, Fosball just, yeah, it's really taken a bad turn. I don't know where that's come from. But yeah, like I do feel for Super Coach A, especially Super Coach A, and it's like yourself who swore never again. Yeah. We learned our lesson eventually, Brian, don't we? I'll come back to the draw and draw next year when the source end, but it does open up an interesting full-backed spot for Super Coach purposes. I think he's got a couple of weeks away at least with a hamstring concern. So I don't know who gets the full-backed jersey there, but it's always fairly Super Coach relevant, the manly full-backed jersey. So I'll be interesting to see who they put in there, whether we talk in Tolucola, whether we're talking Lehigh Hopper.
Wadi, Brewing Garrick, you know, there's always options there for Manly, but they did Clayton Fowlalo early in the year and he scored really well. So that'll be a really close watch. We'll move to the Finns Vest Cowboys. We have Jake Averillo who was ruled out pregame with a rib concern, race stone with a shoulder concern was ruled out pregame. That's a bit of an upgrade on the information rather than just soreness. And then lastly, Jermaine Asako with a shoulder concern out of this one as well, Brian, didn't hear much detail about that for Jermaine Asako. Yeah, mate. He just scored when he was scoring those epic tries. He's shoulder got bent back. He had to have some pain medication. I think people at the ground were saying. So he did kind of get into that triscora's mechanism a couple of times. So whether he jammed up his shoulder a bit of a burn or something like that, but just something to watch out for. I mean, look, he's an absolute monster. Lazy each and every week. So hopefully nothing there. Race stone is still dealing with those ACs. I think that are carried over from last year and then Jake Averillo had a rib issue. So yeah, pain management shouldn't be out for long. Mate, just quickly here, Todd Payton's back again. Jake Clifford. How? How are we dropping Jake Clifford in the year of 2026? I absolutely gobsmacked. And like I took it with both hands considering the fins of Planoom, but we've spoken about this in the past. What is he watching that like all the rest of us are not watching? I don't get it. Absolutely does my head in. Just defyable, especially when they got home last week. You know, it'd be a different story if they lost in a close one and you're like, wow, you know, we're a bit under there. But you know, when you're looking at Jackson Purdue, he's been so good at sending this year. Why you keep persisting with him at six? It just doesn't work. We saw it early in the year when they were going terrible. It didn't work. And long by whole, when Clifford came in, oh, the shipshales are a lot better. Like why don't we keep doing that? I don't know. No, I said to you, you know, off the air, I said, you know, he needs a tight-pate nectomy so basically that sort of means you need a removal of the coach from your life in terms of turning things around. So yeah, really difficult situation there for Jake Clifford. He's been treated all sorts of poorly by the care boys during his journey. And he's a local kid as well. That's the other thing that makes it so bad. I just hate hate how it's all going down there. We'll wrap up with the NRLW, though, Brian. So we've got a few names here on the list. Jess Ellison from the Titans, she looks like she's going to be having surgery on her high grade NCL injury. So that's really bad news for Jess Ellison there. Obviously, Queensland rep there from the Titans. Yes, me and Meeks was a knee concern. Charlotte Bascham was a leg injury. And then we got Kennedy-Charrington with a facial fracture there. Not going on there in NRLW as well, Brian, isn't it? Yeah, mate. The yields have got a fairly big injury. Usually it's already. Yeah. So just an update on Kennedy. She'll miss several weeks with a facial fracture at a last week that we didn't, I don't think we touched on on the show last week. So yeah, shout out to Kennedy, hopefully back soon rather than later. Charlotte Bascham, she got hip, well, it was kind of like hip drop, yeah, adjacent, I guess. So all the usual, you know, concerns MCL, Cinder's Moses, they didn't really, they kind of showed, saw and then didn't really show much footage after that as to whether they were testing the knee or the ankle or whatnot. So yeah, definitely some concerns there. Jess Elliston, she's getting MCL surgery. That's a bit of a surprising one. It's quite rare to need MCL surgery. We've spoken about the main MCL surgeries we've spoken about in the past were like avolctions where they, it pulls off a bit of bone at the end of the ligament so they have to reattach that bit of bone, put a screw through it. But yeah, look, she, they've said she's out not only for the rest of the season, but for the World Cup as well. So you assume it like I would assume that's a reconstruction because those avolctions, we've seen, you know, turbo, I think came back in five weeks after after that one. So I'm assuming MCL reconstruction, which yeah, you'd be looking at at least three to four months, but potentially longer. So yeah, feel for Jess Elliston there mate. Big one, Yasmin Meeks. She went down the, the star second rather for the night. She went down with a left knee injury. Maybe the tangle of legs blocked completely when she stepped off it. But all of the traits afterwards, so I couldn't really tell from the mechanism, but all the traits afterwards gave me inklings of like ACL to be honest because she grabbed at it in significant pain, which settled after about two or three minutes. And then she hopped around and ran around on it a little bit and played for a couple more minutes. And then the next time she was forced to change direction off that leg, she went down in a crumbling heap again. So don't love that at all. Like I can't, I can't say with much confidence because the mechanism wasn't super clear. You know, the other options in that case are like a meniscus issue that, you know, sort of freeze up and then get caught again. Maybe even a patellar sub-location, you know, that's where the kneecap kind of slides in and out. But yeah, I was just, it was just more a bit concerning of how much pain she was in initially. And then it's kind of freed up and she was like, yeah, more good, which we see with ACLs from time to time. And then as soon as she was forced to change direction on it again, was a bit of a concern there. So something to watch out for with Yasmin Meeks, that is for sure. Let's get into the questions, my friends. So we are answering your questions in the muscle nation recovery room. We'll get to your questions that you have on the biggest NREL injuries, but also on sports performance and recovery. We always get questions about the layers, play injuries, but we'll get so many on general sports medicine and performance topics. And we love diving into them. Thanks to muscle nation. They do the best in the game when it comes to gym, apparel and supplements. I have been smashing their subs nonstop to try and never 90, keeping the dads, dads are getting rigs for 2026. It's just, yeah, it's really, really good to have them on board for this season. It is bright. We sort of have locked in a family vacation together coming up in January or December early January over that new year period. And that really gives us the motivation to get the rigs into very good shape when we're doing, especially the dad Olympics. We have a few sort of pet events that we try to get really, really into shape forward to compete against the other dads who come on this holiday each and every year. And hopefully, Brian, with the supplementation from muscle nation, I can get the rig in its optimal shape and I can really put the other dads to shame because I'll be going for it come friends holiday in late December early January over that new year period. Mate, not only will the rig need to be in shape, but I can tell you the Crayotein Stocks protein powder pre-workout will have to be in full force in the week leading up to that because I'm going to be, I'm going to be performance enhancing as much as humanly possible to wipe the floor with all you duds. So you believe the muscle nation will get a red hot workout for sure. But head on over to musclenation.org. The code to NRL Physio will get your 10% off and stacks with any other codes or sales that are on. Let's get into the questions for this week. Let's do a bright question. One comes in from Andy. He says with Hudson Young and Will Warbreak has the return to performance after Achilles tears. Is there a difference between people playing the forwards versus people playing the backs? Yeah. This look, as we said earlier Achilles ruptures are almost the toughest rehab. So Hudson Young and Will Warbreak have a huge process ahead of them. The, I guess you'd say the concerning thing is that research shows around 25% of professional athletes who rupture their Achilles never play at the top level again. So the same research also shows that the ones who do make it back, so the 75% who do make it back, they typically aren't at their best. Now the NRL specifically probably hasn't had enough Achilles ruptures to have a wealth of data. We saw quite a few post-COVID. I think there were quite a few with people kind of de-loading and then loading back up again. So we saw a few there and that was across World Sport 2. But the recent NRL examples do give Hudson Young and Will Warbreak some good hope. So the first one, Alex Johnson. So Alex Johnson didn't just come back from his Achilles. He arguably came back better. His run meters were up 36%, his tri-rate was up 51%, and all other stats were stable on his pre-injury numbers. And as we spoke about with Alex Johnson, he's a little bit older, you know, a little bit further progressed in his career. So that really, I think, for a player like Will Warbreak now, I did have a look. The rabbits did have a fair good run like when Alex Johnson was doing well and that come back from easy Achilles. So you know, the tri-rate being up 51%, that's probably more to do with how the rabbits were forming. But like even things like run meters being up 36%, tackle bust being on the same, you know, tackles made missed tackles, post-contact meters, all of those are relatively stable. So that's really, really good signs. And Alex Johnson came back after eight months. And you got Tanyaela Paseca. So Paseca, his comeback is the flattest line you will ever see stats wise. So every single stat was in a few percent of his pre-injury output. And his tackle efficiency actually improves. So he's a front-rower, nut trucker, you know, it does have a power game. But even he admitted this year that he's still getting that power back in that leg, but it's just good.
to see that even though he's still probably not quite at his best from a maybe measurable standpoint. So, you know, when he's in the gym and measuring things, maybe he's not quite there. Once he's out on the field, that didn't seem to sharp much at all. And then you've got Cam Murray. So Cam Murray's numbers, they do tell a little bit of a different story. So he had the same minutes on his return this year. I did discount the game, the one game that he played at the end of last year, because like, yeah, that was just almost a waste of time. But his tackle busts were up 27%. But his run meters and his tackle count both dropped around 16%. So it didn't seem to take his speed or his agility, but it seemed to bring back his involvement and his workload. So that kind of, I guess, is probably the closest, like for like for Hudson Young, you know, they're not the same players, but they're, you know, relatively similar in that, you know, elite in the game, elite forwards, compliant the edge, compliant the middle. I know Hudson Young hasn't done much of that recently. But yeah, I think overall here, the world's data says that a quarter of professional athletes don't make it back and most who do come back worse than before. But the NRL's recent record does say otherwise. And that's the best news possible of Hudson Young and Will Warwick. So yeah, mate, I think for me, I always go to there's been guys like Jermaine Tenoa Brown. He was forced into retirement off the back of a Nikkeleys. But it just looks, I just think these guys who are already so well established, like even looking at those stats worldwide, where there's like 25% don't come back to the sport. I wonder how many of those were actually like stars of the game, or like really, really solid first grade, like, you know, professional athletes, because if you're on that fringe, you know, losing a little bit of power here and there can make such a massive difference. But for someone like Ken Murray, things would just have to go insanely wrong for him to not come back to sport. So I think the fact that both young and Will Warrick are, you know, their international players, their stars in their own right, I think it does both really, really well for them coming back next year and returning relatively quickly back to their best. Yeah, I totally agree with you, Brian. I think it also depends on the sport a lot as well. Like, I guess NREL is not purely a sprinting-based sport. There's a lot of it, but there's also that bigger Robick element as well. So whether it is more to do with, you know, the NFL, like the high speed, high collisions sort of stuff, maybe I know, you know, NBA, it's always sort of regarded as, you know, one of those things that can be career limiting, but that probably speaks to the guys outside of the absolute guns, if you know what I mean, like there's other, like Kevin Durant, you know, took a long time off, but he was just one of those freak show worldies who came back and is still doing the thing as he is at the moment. So I do take your point that it's probably to do with the player and they're standing in their respective sports. It's a really good comment. Next one comes in from Jacob Broner on the Achilles topic again. He says, what causes these Achilles injuries to the type of turf? Is it overtraining? Is it too many games in quick succession, like an origin backup or is it a bit of a combination of all these things? Yeah, mate, I'm just getting up a post that I saw from Sydney Milk Syndicate just on Hudson Young. So leading into this week, Hudson Young actually got given four days off by the way. So he was saying in the lead up to the game, the bodies really, this is a quote from Hudson Young, the bodies really good. I was a little bit stiff and sore from where Harry Grant got me in the back, but other than that, body was good and Sticky gave me a couple days off to go home, recharge of batteries. We're back in here now and looking forward to Saturday. So it wasn't like they smashed him at training leading up to this week, you know? And I think the, like seeing that and then having, you know, Hudson Guy and Rupshire and Achilles on the weekend, the biggest contributor to this is load over time. Don't get me wrong, absolutely. But it just shows you that it's not always about, oh, like overload. It's been overloading too much. It's also variation in load as well. This is the challenging thing about load management. Is it's not straightforward? It's not always, oh yeah, only those people who get overloaded, you know, suffer these injuries because we've spoken about in the past how important warmups are before the game to make sure you're getting loading into your tissue before you go out there and perform on the weekend. That's why it's so important to go hard at training. So you prepare your body. What it's going to do on the weekend. Tom Treboivich, for example, one of the most important things for him to do in rehab from these hamstring injuries is to sprint as fast as he can, to get his hamstrings used to, you know, that amount of load. So load management is the biggest thing that comes into play here. But obviously, you know, with Hudson, he had some days off, Will Warburg didn't even play origin. So, you know, it's hard to point at one thing. It's often a combination of a lot of different things. They're not single, you know, single factor, single factor injuries. You see that step back, I think for anybody who is familiar with the NBA, all the Achilles over there happen with that step back motion where guys are kind of, you know, they really throw the leg behind them far, you know, away from their center of mass and try and push off from there. That seems to be a big cause. That mechanism seems to be a big cause. So, you know, whether you're working on some technical stuff, but like that's just a, that's a position it's so hard to avoid in sport, so hard to avoid in sport. So yeah, unfortunately, I think unless we, you know, saw a raft of Achilles injuries, which we did after COVID, as I mentioned earlier, so potentially there were some issues there, but Achilles injuries are just one of those things. They're part of sport and two in one weekend is weird, yes, but they're also the only, I'm pretty sure, the only two that have happened this year off the top of my head. So, it's not to say that there's this raft of Achilles injuries at this point in time, it was just crazy that we had two happening at once, I think. Yeah, a bit coincidental, wasn't I agree with you there, Brian, we can sort of wrap this into the next two questions. The first one is from Dylan, he said, I've ruptured my Achilles, but I'm not getting surgery. Do you know the method of surgery versus non-surgery and in terms of how it's decided? Yeah, so it's really interesting. I think the, the evidence is definitely pulled towards conservative management, so non-surgery being a great option, particularly for everyday people, general population. The, the modern evidence says that the re-rupture rates are near equal. As long as you have a really good rehab, you're not put into a cast, so you put into a boot, you know, and we'll talk about that in a second, but effectively the way I describe it to patients, because they go, but I've torn my Achilles, what do you mean? The two ends are separated. What the boot does is the boot puts you almost in like, I guess the best way to describe is a high heel position, so you've got wedges underneath your heel, which raise it up. And it's just like if you've got a cut or a gash where the two ends of the cut are far apart, you get your stary strips or your butterfly clips and you pull those two pieces of skin together and allow it to heel and it kind of fills in the gap. Similar sort of thing here, if you put the heel in a raised position, that can bring the two ends of the tendon close together and then it can fill in the gap. So that tends to be how it works and then they do that and then you slowly take away those wedges as time goes on. So I think the benefits to non-op is you avoid wound infection, you know, nerve risks, but with the surgery and we'll talk about that with the next question as to why surgery tends to be a little bit more, well, it is much more common in athletes, but James, I know your public health, I get them coming in for rehab as well, but the approach in public health is pretty much across the board conservative management. They rarely, rarely do Achilles' rupture repairs from what I have seen, maybe in like a younger population, but most people who are up to their Achilles who want surgery are going private at this point in time. What's your experience public health wise? Yeah, it's far, far more common to see it non-operatively managed. I guess there's a protocol that gets you pretty wild, it's called the Fowler Kennedy Protocol. So if you're very curious and you want to get your nerve on, you can always have a look at that. It sort of talks through the progression of the foot position and how much load to put through it because I guess the principles with Fowler Kennedy is you want to try and get it into a good position for like the collagen of the tendon to sort of get together, but then you need to progressively load it so it aligns. If you know what I mean, that's why I think it's like the position means it can sort of heal it, can sort of attenuate or sort of join together, but then you need to just be cautious on how you gradually load that because that can be the thing that gives you that sort of directional, yeah, I guess recovery and repair of those fibres. So that's what we see very, very commonly publicly. I mean, I'm in that space at the moment, Brian, I'm sort of in the long-term chronicles of the space, but definitely it was one of those things that even, you know, six years ago, five years ago, it was very, very commonplace and I don't think that would have changed because obviously with the rates of surgery, it's a more expensive thing to do to the wider population. It recovery time is very, very similar to the not-up period to the surgery period and you do have that risk of clots and infection that you don't get when you do not operate it as well. So yeah, for the general population and the non-athlete population call that, it's pretty good. It's a pretty good
option and I think, you know, we are high level athletes as well, Brian, but I think if it was a hypothetical and we're on our friends holiday and I eruption my Achilles, I think I'd be looking at probably more of a nonoperative go to there rather than an operative sort of process there. So that would be my my bias as well because a lot of people sort of hear, "I'm I getting like the dead option out of the two?" And it's definitely not a dead option because you can have really good functionally outcomes with not operative surgery, not operative sort of management I should say rather than surgery. So yeah, any other points for that Brian because otherwise we're going to move on to the next one. So the next one comes in from Oliver, he says, "Is there a world where are the players or the, you know, how do younger world war broke? Ops for non-surgical management of their Achilles?" Yeah, no, I don't think so. Not from the evidence that we've got so far. So I think, yeah, from a everyday standpoint, general population, I'm probably the same. If I are up should my Achilles as long as everything was looking pretty good, I'd probably go conservative as well. But the big thing here is that non operative tendons, they tend to heal or there is an increased risk of them healing slightly longer and see even millimeters here and there can decrease those calf mechanics. So you're looking at, I think the stats say about a 10 to 30 loss of, we'll call it like for the nerds plan a flexion, but effectively pushing off power. Yeah, yeah, calf strength, you lose that like 10 to 30%, which for me, I like, you know, obviously I'll really struggle to school my girls in, you know, back out footy or something like that, but I'm not, I'm not going to notice 10 to 30% deficit in calf strength. Whereas for a winger or for Hudson Young, that can just be so massive. 10 to 30%, we talk all the time about them trying to get one to 2% little bits here and there 10 to 30% for them is just huge. So surgery, you set the exact length intention of the Achilles, it restores the spring, you know, the explosiveness. And there is, from what I've seen, the re-rupture rate is a little bit lower in surgical. So for, you know, for professional athletes trying to get that risk as low as possible is huge. So yes, I think the short answer is no at this point in time. It's not like ACL, although ACL, even some of the recent, you know, numbers on ACLs treated conservatively in terms of pro sports people probably aren't that encouraging, but it's definitely not even close to ACL for me in that, like I thought there would be someone from an ACL perspective trying on up at some point or there may be soon, but I don't think we're close to anybody trying nonop after an Achilles. It's already enough of a career killer. I don't think you need to add loss of strength from conservative management into it. Nice to summarize, Emma. I think the other point that you make which is good about re-rupture is that's probably the one thing we do see in public sometimes is people that do the nonoperative management and for whatever reason they're just at risk of re-rupture and they do re-rupture. Sometimes they get surgically repaired. I can think of one of my actually good mates that actually that happened to. So he was, yeah, be down and dumps without not a fun time to go through one that you nonoperatively manage and then you have to go for surgery with a re-ruptured Achilles. Last question here from the muscle nation recovery room comes in from Jaden Brion. He says, who did you support before the dolphins came onto the scene? You're always a dolphins fan from Wayback obviously, but who did you support in NRL before the dolphins came on? Yeah, man, I copped a lot when I went back to GP a few weeks ago because people were feeding me that there's no way I could have been a dolphins fan from the get go, but like I was born a wreck, like I was born a wreck, what do you want from me? I love the devs, don't get me wrong, I'm actually going up to Gimpy to see the devs next weekend, the devs play, so that'll be good. But yeah, I was a fins fan from young, like I think when you grew up in wreck life it was just the dolphins. There was dolphins in Queensland, we're kind of the two things that was you know, Queensland for origin and then you just went, you went to dolphin oval, you played and then you watched, you were, you waited and you watched and that was what I was really cool to get along to totally work with stadium for the NRLW today and get the kids up close and just reminded me of yeah, dolphin oval back in the day. I think I moved to Gimpy in high school and I still like I wouldn't have said like I was really thinking about this question today and I can't remember and this is going to be blasphemy to you because a lot of people said you must have supported the Bronx, but I don't remember where I watched the O6 grand final, like I can't, I don't have any feelings of like oh my god, like I watched that and I was so happy because I think from high school through to like early uni and those kind of things, it was a bit of both with Bronx and chaos because I think the Bronx made sense like most people were Broncos fans, but made during that time JT was my favourite player. JT was my favourite player, Maddie Bowen was my second favourite player, like I just love the chaos, love watching the chaos, I think it was a bit of both, I was definitely a floater in those days, I always tell the story that I went to the 2015 grand final with you boys and just wore my marones, Josie and I was just happy with whoever won. So and that was before yeah, before there was even any word of the Fin. So I was definitely, I mean if the Finns didn't come in, I might be sitting here just wearing a Queensland jersey every second week because yeah, I loved both, I think I probably would have lent Bronx more just purely living in Brisbane, going to Suncourt with you boys and watching the Bronx, but at the end of the day JT was my favourite player, like I love Loki, I love but yeah, I just love JT, he was so good and Maddie Bowen as well. So yeah, I'd say a bit of both which is a bit of a cheat, but yeah you won't find any photos of me with Broncos gear on as a kid or anything like that. So mate, let's get into it, we've been going for long enough, but the most important segment of the show is Super Coach Corner. Mate, I think you've got me in the good-bloke state, I don't really know whether what we've scored is good or not, I can't really get a read going through my leagues, but yeah, hit me with your score, where you ranked and we're getting low on trades, mate. So what are we going to do? Good question, Brian. Well, my ranking is going nowhere because off the back of last week, and I think we felt like we scored okay last week, I punched at 14.05 last week and I just dropped about 100 places, so I was ranked 2289, which still sucks, because I looked Nico and I was like, okay, I might get a bit of green here, no bueno for me, unfortunately. So anyway, this week still don't feel great, I scored 12.82, felt like a lot of dirty bed sheets, I feel like I might have shat the bed a few times here because what I ended up doing this week, Brian, was I traded out Ruben Garrick for casing of clay and that cost me heaps of points, and I traded out 10 year old Secker to paint half, so I sort of thought I'll try to back in paint half here and see if he can get really, really, really hot through this period. He was throwing the offload in origin, I thought, okay, this might be pain-playing, you know, 70 minutes, lots of offloads, I was sort of thinking that's where I was going to go. Maybe, and the other thing is well, Brian, and this might be a sort of a hot take, but I just wonder, with the seemingly little bit of decrease in the six again, I'll be looking at big boys season again like we were end of last year, remember last year here, big, it was to have like, you know, three or four gun front rows, which we all like this never happens, this never happens in this sort of format. I wonder if we just sniff that again towards end of the year, anyway, it might be a bit too early to tell, but it might be a bit of a watch in the wait. I played it too safe on the trade, so if I'm getting in casing of clay and paint, I'm going to paint half, I message you all week and said, what about drink water and breeze waltz? And I threw it out in the DMC earlier. I should have done it. I should have backed my gut there a little bit more. I was a little bit of a silky lala. I took the easy option and I bitched out. So, anyway, that's on me. So at the present Brian, like I said, with the score of 12802, I had three trades going into the week and I'll be using another one for two this week. And I needed to decide just desperately. If I run Niko and Cleary through the flex because it opens up skeptency and vice-capacity options there, especially for Cleary because he has a lot of early games in the round. So and I think Cleary becomes a really big VC option for the next few weeks. And I think Niko has later games in the round. So it's not a great setup if you have them both at half-back because you might have a situation where you're like, fire out, especially Niko's run coming up is insane. You probably want to captain him most weeks and you probably want to be able to vice-capacity Cleary. So I think it's probably a pretty good shot to have one of them in the flex just to give you that captain's eviscaptency flexibility. But I do need to move on to on peroy, but chapter this week. So I'm going to move him to Walsh or Scotty Drink. And then the other one will be moving, you know, do I trade out Cody Walker, Viadjade and Campbell and then bring in a Walsh drink water in it full-back in the flex. So then I run Niko and Cleary at the half. I just don't feel great about that all the way, Brian. I think it's a better shot to have Niko and Cleary in the flex. In terms of pods for this week, Brian, I just wrote a few down here that I really like. So I like Reese Walsh. Obviously the Brock has a doin something now. So he is obviously in plague based on how he played the other night. Scotty Drinkwater is an obvious one as well. The turbo owners, Teddy, if he's named next week is in that conversation. And so after week 22, if arm or round 22, I should say, if Katawa is back, he's got a pretty good little run. So I think if you want to get real weird, you could go hammer so because he can be someone that gives you a real good point of difference. And made if Katawa's there, the Fin School a million points. So I don't mind that whatsoever. Then the other ones, I like Jacob Preston, second four. If you need a second row at price, I like a pair. The zet's I'm back, you know, you know, anyone there, I like him. Just like Harry Parnie at Olico, the 500K, Brian. Hello. He was a beast. He could be away from two tries in that game.
against the Panthers just gone. The Broncos on the left wing, average one try per game last year. He's a really good shout at his price. He'll be just over 500 K. I think he looks really, really nice. If you want to get super funky. The shark's outside backs. Obviously we talked about them weeks on end, Mood's Hull, Ica-Toe, Rami, and I think they're good shout, Brandon Bess is a good shout. Simmy Sussange is a good shout. Now he's bottom-edged at in price as well, especially if he were a talistunk and owner. So I do get a bit worried about the show if he's a Simmy Sussange, but I don't mind that as a little play to be honest. So yeah, lots of options there from a POD's perspective there, mate. What are you rate on the POD's? Are you looking to get weird or are you looking at trying to get get hot boy racing at fullback? What's got you drinking at fullback? Now that he's goalkeeping, because Jake Clifford has been punted into the base. Yeah, mate, I was a bit like you. I, you know, Brandon Burns really, I got around him and was really tempted. I just couldn't find, yeah, couldn't find enough money to be honest. Like I think it probably worked out in my favour, because if I had enough money, I would have gone Ruben Garrick to Brain Burns. Instead I went super boring and went brain burns. Sorry, Ruben Garrick to Pain House is my only trade. I just, the one thing that got me over the line is I looked at Haas last week and he threw three offloads. And as soon as I saw that, I was like, yeah, that, like, surely that's got to be a sign of the things to come, which I don't know if he threw any offloads this week. Fantastic, the way it goes. But yeah, that, that was what sold me with Pain House. I brought him in. I mean, I just hate this time of year, because you're either trading out guys who are good and scoring well or you mentioned him. I've, I've got all these guys on the bench, who scored like 70, 80 points. And I started guys who scored 50 and like God damn it. Greg, Mars, you went out and, you know, lit it up and you're just going far out. So take me back to where I've only got like 18, 19 to choose from. So I can't make any wrong decisions. So just, you know, I actually don't mind the fins, both being out this week. So it means I reckon I will have like 19 players. So I just play, like I just play those guys. And I won't regret, you know, sitting someone on the pine. So I was ranked 749. I think I went up like 30 spots or something, character house. I scored 1259. Like overall, I felt it was a pretty average week, but I capped into Molly, which, which kind of-- I play. Yeah, I like halfway through the weekend with Cleary, like Nico, all those kind of guys like go and low and a bit of weather around and those kind of things. I'm like, I'm just going to go with the nut trucker who's got a little bit of upside. It was kind of my thing. I was just reading the tea leaves about how the weekend was going. And that was my only good decision. Because it's going into the weekend, I had it on Turbo. It was my first one. So trades this week, Turbo is definitely going to one of Teddy bowl short drinky. And I may even use-- I've got four trades left. I may even do sewer to another one of them as well. Because I just-- I want guys who are going to light it up. And to your point, I reckon if I hang on to sewer for one more week and he doesn't go well, like Sarah do, hang on to him. I think a sewer to a hammer could be a great play. I'm just looking for guys in teams who can light it up. And I just don't know where the storm those guys for the next four weeks with Munster out, Hughes not certain. There's just so many injuries there. So yeah, I definitely think the chooks look quite good. Bronx obviously look really hot. And then, well, the cows, I mean, if they name a side with Jake Clifford at 5/8, then maybe you go drinking. But yeah, I just think the fends are someone who, yeah, they might lose games, you know, 40 to 30, but they're still putting up points, except for last week. Obviously, in terms of other guys look at made if Toby catchman's going to play 80 minutes every week, then holy, like, might have to bring him in. So that's something you can sit a bit of a luxury trade. If you look into downgrade mate, Aaron Kiley, he would have said it all along, like, yeah, they should have let Morgan Knowles go and kept Aaron Kiley, if he asked me, but anyway, yeah, he's only like 350k or something for a guy playing eight minutes. He's breaking even this week as well. He's not going to move anywhere. So he's perfect to get in if you need money or you need a playable number. Yeah, 350 is great. Jacob Preston, he's bottoming out. I just say, no, Martin, good shot now with Hudson Young out. Like I assume, Noah's locked into 80 minutes moving forward. And then Nat Buccia, we spoke about him a couple of weeks ago from a question from a listener. I think he's a really good shout because Angus Crite and, you know, around 26, 27 at best. And Nat keeps pumping out, you know, score after score, 80 minutes after 80 minutes. But mate, I think to give the listeners a little bit of value on a Sunday night, we'll say it now and we'll change our minds a million times over the next four or five days. But what I want you to do for me as the all-knowing super coach expert is you need to rank Teddy, Volsh and Drinky. You need to give me your definitive ranking as of now. And then as I said, we can change it. But yeah, tell me who you would bring in out of those three. I like Volsh. Teddy then drink to be honest, because I just don't know if Drinky has the goal-kicking. If we knew that Clifford was injured the whole year, you would be drinking one. But I just think, you know, when you look at Drinky's stats with the goal-kicking, he is one of one. But I think one, the vibes on Reese looks really good the other night. And if you think the Broncos can get hot by all mean lean into that. Teddy second, I think that's pretty much a no-brainer. He's at 570. Reese is going to be about 560. They're both evenly priced. They're both good, you know, not the best runs, not the worst runs. I think the roosters probably have the better draw out of the two when you think about it now, because that's the thing. We're hoping that Teddy gets named this week, but they run into Knights, Cowboys, Bulldogs, Panthers, West, Tigers, Dolphins, Rabbinodes. It's a pretty good run. The Broncos run isn't quite as good, but you're really just baking into the Broncos vibes aren't you? It's really what you're baking into. Like they don't have the easiest run over the next little bit of time. But they're in Muswin scenario. They're season on line scenario or they're looking barley. But fair few of those plays were pretty dialed in. Mate, I was even shocked at how dialed in Pain House was. There's a little bit of footage there of like, Nathan Cleary going to pick up the ball for a scrum getting set in Pain House kicking it away. Like just good little things like that. And I'm like, OK, this guy is in for at the present. So I like Wilde's the obvious bring in this week. I just don't see he can say no to that based on what he did on the weekend. And I think Teddy's proven, he'll be in a good set up team. They're running second or third at the moment. The rooster's there looking really nice. But Nairn Drinkwater would be my one, but he's just not guaranteed the goal kicking. So I just can't back him in there. And he does have that by as well in round 20. Is he 25 by around 24 by as well? So he do miss him for one week. Unfortunately, so that would be the way I rank them. I do like Missum Scott to drink water mate, because I was real tempted on him this week when I saw he had the goal kicking. But yeah, the Cowboys are just a bit of a rabble with their herbs combination. And you're getting toadpainting in there. I don't I don't love it. I don't really love it. Like if we saw Clifford was back and Drinkwater was definitely kicking, then I'd be straight there. But you just we just don't know that. Unfortunately, it's just not probably going to eventually. Yep, I completely agree. I think it's very, very close between Walsh and Teddy for me. Very, very close. I'd like if you wanted to go either way. I would not stop you. The reason that Walsh gets it for me is anybody listens to this show now and knows that I'm just like just inject upside into my veins. And yeah, I think if anybody watched the game the other night and didn't realize that Walsh just needs to be given the ball at every opportunity, that's just what needs to happen. So I am happy to back that. As I sit here right now, I think Walsh will come in for me. But I think you are mental. Like you are mental if you don't do two of these three guys. I think it's worth the pricing. The clearing, Nico, you know thing. I just think like, yeah, I can't remember which podcast it was I listened to during the week, but they're just like it's not worth destroying the makeup of your team to try and manufacture that in. And I just totally agree. I just think you can have three gun fullbacks, you know, and find yourself an upside VC. VC, a CTW or something like that. I think the only complication is that Cleary has a lot of early games over the next few weeks. So that's a bit of a complicated. Do you just VC Milky Jenkins and just say, well, he's like, you know, Cleary goes big Milky will. Like because he's got a thousand points. Like, yeah, I just I just think I just think you have like, yeah, those three are just such good prices. You've only got a couple of trades left. But yeah, I'll be really tempted to go to one of them as well. I may go to for one more week, depending on like break evens and, you know, those kind of things and just to sort of see how he goes. But yeah, as it goes right now, it's two of those three in for me and drinky for all the reasons that you said, I'm not confident that he gets the goal kicking full stop. I just have so little faith in Todd Payton after dropping a dropping, yeah, Clifford. I mean, it wouldn't it wouldn't even shock me if he dropped Scott Drinkwater and played and played Purdue at fullback because that's what he's going to do. That's the other thing. Why would you drop, why would you drop Clifford when Purdue's your fullback next year? What are you given Purdue six minutes for? I don't get it. makes no sense to me. So.
Yeah, I think the hell was draw is good though, mate. That's the only thing it's fantastic. It's Broncos roosters Titans eels by West Tigers Raiders like it's pretty damn good and four of those games are up in towns will I believe One of them's at C bus One of them's at combat against the eels like it's a pretty tasty draw, but it's just I just want to see the goal kicking there with J Clifford if he didn't if he didn't have the buy he'd he'd probably Lucky be a lot closer for me, but I think with the ball that separates him from Teddy and Walsh Well the other weird one mate and this is probably real tinfoily, but Reese just bombed that thing over from the sidebond on the Weakhead Like if Reynolds is playing seven is there a world where it's like okay We're just going to get this hot boy to do everything and we're just going to load him up to the maximum. I don't know like do you just Does everyone just pile into reeds? I don't know like do you just say he's the tea he's the ball whenever you want it We are just in your service at the moment Reese just tell us what you want to do and we'll do anything for you I don't know maybe that's what the Bronx have to go not sure, but that would be even More weight into the Reese Walsh argument because he gets even a few goal kicks Because Reynolds is like you know not me Wasn't hidden them that well the other night and he wasn't looking great to your point But if he still plays seven there's not many other guys the king he can Tony does kick a little bit But it seems like he's down the pecking order like Hey Reese is like nothing we saw the other night like Get me around that regularly It's definitely yeah, he's he he's coming in for me at the moment anyway That's the you know it's Sunday night, but that's the way I am going So we'll wait and see how we go during the week mate our our draft chat DMS will be lighting up with our trade options. I'm sure But that is a wrap for this week if you like the pod gives a review recommend to a friend James It was a good week for us hopefully many more good weeks for us to come Got the two points come my way this week So with the boys. I hopefully hopefully the Bronx can continue their run so we can be happy next Sunday night But as always guys thanks for listening and up the mighty mighty ooraycliffe golfers
